  1. Well, I think the encouragement goes two ways.

  2. We've been very encouraged to be here.

  3. ! We're so thankful to be able to worship with you this morning.

  4. And you may not know this, but we pray for the ministry of this church back home at Grace and Peace pretty regularly.

  5. In fact, we walked in and immediately we recognized this room from the Knowlton's newsletters.

  6. And so we're thankful for the privilege to be able to be here with you.

  7. Last night with the international dinner was an amazing encouragement.

  8. We were able to hear fantastic music last night as well, a piece from Bach.

  9. It was a delight.

  10. And so I'm going to read from Acts 2 in just a moment, Acts 2, 36 through 47.

  11. But before I do, I mean, it's so good to be here in a beautiful city like this.

  12. You know, I'm a Presbyterian minister.

  13. I've been a Presbyterian minister for 17 years.

  14. We're a Presbyterian church, which means that we have a – we're indebted to the churches here in this country.

  15. And I don't know – hopefully you hear this when Americans come, especially from Presbyterian churches.

  16. But it bears – it's worth repeating that we're thankful for the ties that bind us, not just historically, but we truly are by the Holy Spirit family.

  17. We're going to read about the Spirit's work here in Acts 2, verses 36 through 47.

    Acts 2:36–47

  18. And then I will pray.

  19. This is the Apostle Peter speaking at Pentecost.

  20. Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this.

  21. God has made this Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

  22. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  23. Brothers, what shall we do?

  24. And Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins.

  25. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  26. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, all whom the Lord our God will call.

  27. With many other words, he warned them and he pleaded with them,

  28. Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.

  29. And those who accepted his message were baptized, and about 3,000 were added to their number that day.

  30. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

  31. And everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

  32. All the believers were together and had everything in common.

  33. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

  34. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.

  35. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

  36. praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

  37. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  38. Let's pray and ask God's help.

  39. Father, we thank you that you have preserved your word for us for these thousands of years.

  40. And we thank you that they are not mere words, they are your very words.

  41. And we ask, Holy Spirit, that you would breathe life into them.

  42. And that you would convict us where we need to be convicted.

  43. That you would comfort us where we need to be comforted.

  44. That you would dig out for us ears to hear and give us eyes to see the crucified and risen Christ.

  45. We pray this in his name.

  46. Amen.

  47. One of the things that you're struck by when you visit a new town, a new country immediately is that you are not certain at any moment where anything is, where you're going.

  48. We're glued to our phones, those of us who have service, trying to figure out where are we going.

  49. And it occurs to me, we long for certainty, don't we?

  50. Not just for where we're going, where we are.

  51. We long for certainty relationally.

  52. We long for certainty for the future.

  53. We long for certainty in so many ways.

  54. And it is, it's elusive.

  55. Ever elusive.

  56. We're not certain of many things, are we?

  57. And in this passage, when Peter is speaking at Pentecost, this great, famous sermon, early sermon of the Christian church,

  58. Peter tells his audience that there is something that they can be certain of, though it goes through great grief.

  59. And he wants them to know that there is certainty in their grief so that he might give them a certainty, something they don't even know to look for.

  60. There's a certainty in their grief when he says, know for certain that Jesus is God's anointed.

  61. He is his Lord and Christ, and you killed him.

  62. You murdered him.

  63. He gives them this certainty that pierces their heart so that they might have another certainty that is rooted in the grace of God that is greater,

  64. more powerful, more powerful, more stronger than their sin.

  65. And so that's what I want to talk about this morning, that there is an amazing scene here where the apostle Peter is been,

  66. he's preaching with power.

  67. The Holy Spirit falls on God's people, and he wants them to know with certainty that they're sinners before God

  68. so that they might have certainty in the grace of God.

  69. The Spirit who changes who we are changes our relationship with Jesus.

  70. And if we're going to hear anything this morning, it is that Christianity isn't just about what we do.

  71. It's not merely what we believe.

  72. But it is an experience that God has given us his Spirit, changes who we are,

  73. that we might have a new relationship with God's Lord and Christ.

  74. This is incredible news for us.

  75. It was incredible news for the original audience, for Peter.

  76. And here's what Peter says.

  77. He says, even though Jesus' crucifixion was part of God's plan,

  78. your part in it is devastating.

  79. God is not surprised by what has happened.

  80. God has orchestrated everything, and yet the part that you played in it when you murdered Jesus is devastating.

  81. He says in verse 36,

  82. Therefore let all Israel be assured of this.

  83. God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

  84. Know for certain that the embodiment of righteousness and perfection,

  85. the embodiment of God's love, walked in your presence.

  86. And you didn't recognize the embodiment of righteousness and perfection

  87. when he walked in your presence and when he spoke and you rejected him.

  88. What do you do when you realize you've been wrong on this kind of level?

  89. For those of us who had the privilege of hearing, you know, a piece of Bach last night,

  90. imagine sort of walking into a room where that is happening and saying,

  91. I'd rather have a conversation right now.

  92. Who wants to play a game?

  93. Imagine hearing that and not being struck with,

  94. we need to be quiet and we need to soak this in and appreciate what this is.

  95. Some of us might even be moved to tears by the majesty of what we heard.

  96. Imagine hearing it and saying,

  97. there's nothing memorable about this at all.

  98. As tragic as this response would be,

  99. it pales in comparison to the human response of seeing righteousness

  100. and perfection and love embodied and rejecting him.

  101. How could this have happened?

  102. You know, this doesn't happen in a vacuum.

  103. And sometimes I think it's easy for some of us to think,

  104. had I been there, I would have been different.

  105. We would not have been different.

  106. You know, the Bible famously says that all of creation proclaims the glory of God.

  107. Even blustery days like we've had proclaim the glory of God,

  108. the power of God.

  109. Blue skies proclaim the glory of God.

  110. Psalm 19 says,

  111. day to day pours out speech,

  112. and night to night reveals knowledge

  113. that there is something of our God that we can know.

  114. There is something of his glory we can be certain of.

  115. When we look out at this world that he has spoken into existence,

  116. it proclaims his glory.

  117. But because you and I have fallen short of this glory,

  118. God's word to us in creation doesn't merely speak glory,

  119. it also proclaims to us that we are accountable to the God who has made us.

  120. Paul tells us in Romans 1, he says,

  121. for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  122. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  123. who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

  124. And so when we look out, you know, at God's creation,

  125. we, our group, we hiked up Arthur's seat,

  126. and we got to see a beautiful picture of your city.

  127. When you look out and you see,

  128. from a higher vantage point,

  129. you get to see God's creation

  130. and what we have done in it,

  131. we get to remind ourselves like how small we are.

  132. We feel it, don't we?

  133. But sometimes with that feeling of our finitude,

  134. there's a haunting feeling that comes with that.

  135. Sometimes we feel it when we put our heads on our pillow at night,

  136. and we feel deep in our bones,

  137. we are in need of grace.

  138. There is something that is wrong with us,

  139. and God intends to meet us with every need with his grace.

  140. But my point is,

  141. if we suppress this truth in unrighteousness

  142. when God speaks to us in creation,

  143. as all humans do,

  144. the logical conclusion of that

  145. is that we would suppress and reject

  146. God's embodied word

  147. when he comes and he walks in our midst.

  148. And so all of us

  149. are more in common,

  150. have more in common with those who rejected Jesus

  151. than we would like to admit.

  152. What happens when you realize

  153. that you've been wrong to this degree?

  154. You see, what Peter is saying is

  155. rejecting Jesus is more significant

  156. than we think that it is,

  157. and it's more violent than we think it is

  158. as well.

  159. And so often,

  160. when we're confronted with our sin,

  161. we justify it to ourselves,

  162. don't we?

  163. Well, no, no, you misunderstood me.

  164. That's not what I meant.

  165. You misheard me.

  166. That's not what I meant.

  167. The problem here is with you.

  168. It's not with what I have done.

  169. Or you don't know what they did to me first,

  170. and so of course I would respond this way.

  171. We justify our sin.

  172. But not here.

  173. Peter's original audience,

  174. they cannot justify themselves.

  175. The evidence is irrefutable.

  176. Instead, we read that they were cut to the heart.

  177. When the people heard this,

  178. they were cut to the heart

  179. and said to Peter and the other apostles,

  180. Brothers, what shall we do?

  181. There's a question for us reading this text today.

  182. How do we know if the Holy Spirit is at work in our life?

  183. How do we know if he is present in our life?

  184. And one sign, there are many,

  185. one sign is that our sin grieves us.

  186. That we aren't just grieved by the sins of others.

  187. That we realize the problem isn't just out there,

  188. but it's in here.

  189. That when we are confronted again

  190. by the Spirit's conviction,

  191. there is a grief that accompanies it.

  192. You know, this grief isn't always felt

  193. with the same intensity.

  194. We have seasons of winter and spring in our own hearts.

  195. But a common Christian experience

  196. is that we feel a grief

  197. when confronted with our sin.

  198. There are two different kinds of grief.

  199. Paul says in 2 Corinthians,

  200. there is a godly grief

  201. and a worldly grief.

  202. He says godly grief leads to eternal life.

  203. Worldly grief leads to death.

  204. What's the difference?

  205. I'll share two examples from my life.

  206. Both are embarrassing.

  207. From a previous season of my life,

  208. it was not uncommon in my late teens,

  209. early 20s,

  210. to overindulge with alcohol.

  211. And there were two times

  212. where I really felt particularly grieved

  213. by my behavior.

  214. And once, before I was a Christian,

  215. before I had been converted,

  216. had a regenerate heart,

  217. I was at a party in college

  218. and had overindulged

  219. and proclaimed my love, basically,

  220. for this young woman who was there

  221. in front of others very loudly

  222. and obnoxiously.

  223. It was unacceptable.

  224. And I woke up the next morning

  225. utterly grieved by my behavior.

  226. It had nothing to do with the sin

  227. against a holy God.

  228. It had everything to do with

  229. I've ruined my reputation.

  230. I've embarrassed myself.

  231. I've made a fool of myself.

  232. I was grieved by how I had acted,

  233. but it had nothing to do with sin

  234. or a holy God.

  235. And then a few years later,

  236. as a Christian,

  237. a similar experience happened.

  238. I overindulged,

  239. and this was on purpose,

  240. and I woke up the next morning

  241. deeply grieved,

  242. but it was a very different sort of grief,

  243. though outwardly it looked the exact same.

  244. How could I have done this

  245. against a holy God?

  246. And I was grieved by those

  247. that I had been around.

  248. I have not modeled that the grace of Jesus

  249. is powerful,

  250. and that following Him is worth our lives.

  251. I've sinned against God in this way,

  252. and I am grieved.

  253. And so outwardly,

  254. you have two very similar expressions,

  255. though inwardly a very different matter

  256. is happening altogether.

  257. The common Christian experience

  258. is to feel grief over our sin,

  259. but that grief stems from primarily

  260. sinning against a holy God

  261. who has been kind to us

  262. in sending His Messiah, Jesus.

  263. And that's what's happening

  264. in this passage.

  265. They're grieved.

  266. And they're wondering,

  267. what do we do, Peter,

  268. with our sin against this Jesus?

  269. What do we do?

  270. We have murdered the one

  271. who is the embodiment of righteousness

  272. and holiness and perfection.

  273. What do we do with that?

  274. And Peter says,

  275. turn to the one you have sinned against.

  276. It's utterly counterintuitive.

  277. How do we flee from our guilt?

  278. You have to turn to

  279. the one you've sinned against.

  280. You must lean on His promises.

  281. You must lean on the one

  282. that you have rejected,

  283. for He is gracious to sinners.

  284. And see, the grief that we find

  285. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  286. it leads to repentance.

  287. And the repentance that we find here

  288. is far more than just a mere

  289. outward change in behavior.

  290. More than changing their behavior,

  291. their relationship with Jesus

  292. has been fundamentally changed.

  293. We are not rejecting Him.

  294. We're not suppressing

  295. what He has to say.

  296. We want to be identified with Him.

  297. We want to turn to Him

  298. and be marked by Him.

  299. Repentance in the Bible

  300. is a combination of three things.

  301. We see this in our shorter catechism.

  302. It is marked by hatred of sin.

  303. But it is marked by

  304. an understanding,

  305. an acknowledgement,

  306. an apprehension of the love

  307. and the mercy of God in Jesus.

  308. Only then can we endeavor

  309. after new obedience.

  310. We must hate our sin,

  311. but that alone is not enough.

  312. we must see more than our hatred for sin.

  313. A reception of the mercy

  314. and the grace

  315. and the love of Jesus.

  316. And it is love

  317. and it is mercy from Jesus

  318. that transforms our hearts

  319. and changes our motivations

  320. far more powerfully,

  321. compellingly,

  322. than guilt alone.

  323. And then we strive

  324. after new obedience.

  325. You know,

  326. Christians are forced regularly

  327. to face our own sinfulness.

  328. It doesn't go away,

  329. unfortunately,

  330. when we become Christians,

  331. does it?

  332. The Holy Spirit continues

  333. to expose our hearts

  334. and our motivations

  335. that are contrary to His.

  336. And the goal is never

  337. for us to see

  338. how badly we can feel

  339. over our sin

  340. as if that was the goal.

  341. Just understand how bad you are.

  342. Just understand

  343. that you messed up again.

  344. Just understand

  345. that you're not

  346. who you were meant to be.

  347. That's not the goal.

  348. Repentance will always

  349. remain incomplete

  350. if the dominant word

  351. that we hear from God

  352. isn't grace and mercy.

  353. This is why Peter says

  354. in verse 38,

  355. repent and be baptized.

  356. Every one of you

  357. in the name of Jesus Christ

  358. for the forgiveness

  359. of your sins

  360. and you will receive

  361. the Holy Spirit.

  362. You have to know

  363. that the cleansing blood

  364. of Jesus symbolized

  365. in baptism,

  366. it washes you,

  367. it cleanses you,

  368. in such a way

  369. that Jesus' life,

  370. death,

  371. and resurrection

  372. no longer is merely

  373. a marker of our guilt.

  374. It is a marker

  375. of our acceptance

  376. with God.

  377. True repentance

  378. can only be born

  379. out of God's grace.

  380. Otherwise,

  381. it is not repentance.

  382. Conviction is a good thing,

  383. but it is meant

  384. to be temporary

  385. and it serves its purpose

  386. only in so far

  387. as it drives us back

  388. to the cross of Jesus.

  389. Conviction is a good thing

  390. so far as it drives us

  391. to the mercy

  392. and grace of Jesus.

  393. And once it has done that,

  394. it has served its purpose.

  395. In verse 39,

  396. he says,

  397. For the promise

  398. is for you

  399. and your children,

  400. for all who are far off,

  401. whom the Lord,

  402. our God,

  403. will call.

  404. I won't belabor

  405. this point,

  406. but again,

  407. what we see,

  408. if this passage

  409. is the culmination

  410. of so many

  411. Old Testament promises

  412. that God will pour out

  413. his Holy Spirit

  414. on his people,

  415. we also see

  416. the fulfillment

  417. that God has been

  418. making promises

  419. ever since Abraham.

  420. I will bless

  421. the world

  422. through you

  423. and your family.

  424. And here at Pentecost,

  425. they're seeing,

  426. Peter is saying,

  427. God is going to bless

  428. the world

  429. through you

  430. and your family

  431. as you receive

  432. this Holy Spirit

  433. and you go out

  434. in your lives

  435. carrying this promise

  436. with you.

  437. And so he says,

  438. save yourself.

  439. My translation says

  440. from this crooked generation,

  441. what is this corrupt generation?

  442. What does it mean?

  443. It means that the refuge

  444. offered to us in Jesus

  445. is as real for us

  446. and our families

  447. as the refuge

  448. that God offered Noah

  449. and his family

  450. in the ark.

  451. That when we flee to Jesus,

  452. there is a rescue

  453. and a protection

  454. in a world

  455. that is corrupt

  456. and yet we are left

  457. in this world.

  458. How does this work?

  459. What does this look like?

  460. We're rescued

  461. from a kingdom

  462. and rebellion

  463. against God

  464. and yet we get

  465. to remain

  466. to serve

  467. in this world.

  468. You see,

  469. for the Christian,

  470. the Holy Spirit

  471. changes the way

  472. that we look

  473. at everything.

  474. It changes the way

  475. we look at our relationships.

  476. It changes the way

  477. that we look

  478. at our families,

  479. our work,

  480. everything.

  481. Everything now

  482. is seen in light

  483. of Jesus

  484. and the healing

  485. that he brings.

  486. And so we see

  487. in verse 41,

  488. those who accepted

  489. his message

  490. were baptized

  491. and about 3,000

  492. were added

  493. to their number

  494. that day.

  495. their lives

  496. were changed

  497. and not just

  498. changed

  499. as individuals,

  500. they're brought

  501. into a community,

  502. the church,

  503. together.

  504. The common

  505. Christian experience

  506. is a humbling one

  507. where we see

  508. our need

  509. for a savior

  510. and yet we also

  511. see that we cannot

  512. and must not

  513. go about life

  514. all on our own

  515. anymore.

  516. in God's kindness

  517. he has given us

  518. a community,

  519. his body,

  520. the church.

  521. And so we see

  522. this is why

  523. they devote themselves

  524. to the apostles'

  525. teaching

  526. and to fellowship,

  527. to breaking of bread,

  528. and to prayer.

  529. They commit themselves

  530. to immersing

  531. themselves

  532. in the good gifts

  533. that God

  534. has given us

  535. that show us

  536. what to do

  537. with our guilty

  538. consciences.

  539. when our consciences

  540. are stung again,

  541. when we are pierced

  542. again and anew

  543. by the sin

  544. that we continue

  545. to see in our life,

  546. God has called

  547. a people

  548. to devote ourselves,

  549. to immerse ourselves

  550. in the ways

  551. that God has promised

  552. to meet us

  553. and shape our minds.

  554. The apostles'

  555. teaching,

  556. of course,

  557. is the New Testament.

  558. We're given

  559. the scriptures

  560. to be reminded

  561. that it's not all

  562. law,

  563. do this

  564. and thou shalt

  565. not do this,

  566. but grace

  567. for those

  568. who cannot

  569. do this perfectly.

  570. We're reminded

  571. again and again

  572. as we immerse

  573. ourselves

  574. in the scriptures

  575. together

  576. that God

  577. has done for us

  578. what we cannot

  579. do for ourselves.

  580. And we're called

  581. to immerse ourselves

  582. in prayer

  583. with God's people,

  584. to adore the God

  585. who has graciously

  586. forgiven us

  587. of our sins

  588. and we ask him

  589. to make us

  590. more like him.

  591. And we immerse

  592. ourselves in

  593. the breaking

  594. of bread,

  595. the Lord's Supper,

  596. where we get

  597. to see again

  598. and again

  599. that Jesus'

  600. body broken

  601. on a cross

  602. points to more

  603. than our guilt.

  604. It does point

  605. to that.

  606. He must die

  607. for our sin.

  608. But it points

  609. to our forgiveness

  610. and the grace

  611. that we receive.

  612. And we cannot

  613. hear this message

  614. one time

  615. or two times

  616. or three times.

  617. We have to hear it

  618. again and again

  619. and not just

  620. as individuals,

  621. as a body,

  622. as a church.

  623. All of this

  624. happens in Acts

  625. in the context

  626. of fellowship.

  627. Here's the other

  628. thing I think

  629. that we might

  630. not notice

  631. immediately

  632. from this passage.

  633. It's easy,

  634. I think,

  635. sometimes to hear

  636. this and think,

  637. okay,

  638. here's what I've

  639. got to do.

  640. I've got to read

  641. the scriptures

  642. and I've got to pray

  643. and I've got

  644. to take

  645. the Lord's Supper

  646. and, oh,

  647. I need to do

  648. that with people

  649. and not see

  650. that these are

  651. gifts from God.

  652. And it's not

  653. just a gift,

  654. it's not just

  655. a checklist,

  656. it's a gift

  657. because there

  658. is more pain

  659. in this life

  660. than just the

  661. conviction of sin,

  662. isn't there?

  663. I mean,

  664. we feel pain

  665. and misery

  666. all the time

  667. and some of that

  668. is a hardship

  669. that just comes

  670. with our work

  671. life.

  672. We go to work

  673. and things

  674. don't work

  675. the way that

  676. we think they

  677. should.

  678. We're not

  679. treated as

  680. fairly as we

  681. want and there

  682. is a pain

  683. that is there.

  684. Or relationally,

  685. there is pain

  686. that the

  687. relationships

  688. that should be

  689. the easiest

  690. for us

  691. sometimes feel

  692. like they're

  693. the hardest.

  694. Maybe you've

  695. asked for the

  696. good gift of

  697. children in your

  698. life and then

  699. they come and

  700. you're not sure

  701. how to raise

  702. them.

  703. Am I messing

  704. them up?

  705. Life is hard.

  706. And we are

  707. people filled

  708. with anxiety

  709. and at times

  710. depression.

  711. Life in this

  712. fallen world

  713. is hard.

  714. And then there

  715. are medical

  716. diagnoses

  717. where we get

  718. the devastating

  719. news that it's

  720. cancer or

  721. Alzheimer's or

  722. somebody you

  723. know and love

  724. is taken from

  725. you too early

  726. and they pass

  727. away from this

  728. life.

  729. Life in this

  730. fallen world

  731. is hard.

  732. God.

  733. And when we

  734. read that the

  735. early church

  736. had they shared

  737. their possessions

  738. together.

  739. It's more than

  740. possessions.

  741. They shared

  742. their lives

  743. together.

  744. And why?

  745. Because when you

  746. live life together

  747. sometimes people

  748. are up here.

  749. Life is going

  750. well and the

  751. paycheck is coming

  752. in and sometimes

  753. you live life

  754. down here and

  755. you go to a

  756. funeral again.

  757. and God has

  758. given us a

  759. people together

  760. saturated in

  761. this good news

  762. so that we have

  763. people to come

  764. alongside of us

  765. and say you

  766. cannot pray for

  767. yourself today but

  768. I can pray for

  769. you.

  770. And you don't

  771. know how to

  772. pay for your

  773. bill this month

  774. but we can come

  775. alongside you.

  776. And then when you

  777. are in another

  778. place in life and

  779. that person is

  780. down well we

  781. have one another.

  782. And so what God

  783. has given us in

  784. the church is not

  785. just a checklist of

  786. things that we're

  787. supposed to do.

  788. It is grace for

  789. all of our wounds

  790. and we need one

  791. another because none

  792. of us is ever able

  793. to face all of life

  794. at the same time.

  795. We need help to

  796. rejoice and we

  797. need help to

  798. grieve.

  799. And we need help

  800. to come alongside

  801. one another when we

  802. need to bring a

  803. meal for somebody

  804. who doesn't have

  805. one or isn't in

  806. the situation or

  807. position to prepare

  808. it for themselves.

  809. God has given

  810. us a body to

  811. come alongside of

  812. us when we feel

  813. the wounds of

  814. life in a fallen

  815. world that might

  816. not flow directly

  817. from conviction of

  818. sin and yet it is

  819. still a mark of

  820. just life in a

  821. world that doesn't

  822. function the way

  823. that it is supposed

  824. to.

  825. We ought not to

  826. fall into the

  827. trap that the

  828. early church was

  829. particularly better at

  830. this than we were.

  831. As if they were

  832. forgiven and all

  833. went well right

  834. after that.

  835. Two chapters after

  836. this two church

  837. members are punished

  838. severely because they

  839. make a mockery of

  840. sharing life together.

  841. In 1 Corinthians

  842. Paul tells us that

  843. you Christians

  844. sometimes forget

  845. the rich are

  846. exploiting the

  847. poor.

  848. We need the

  849. gospel again to

  850. remind us our

  851. sinfulness continues

  852. to run deep but

  853. God's grace triumphs

  854. over that and we

  855. need each other to

  856. embody that together

  857. to see that in one

  858. another.

  859. It's a good gift for

  860. us and lastly and

  861. most briefly probably

  862. it's a good gift for

  863. the watching world.

  864. When we live life

  865. together when the

  866. gospel meets us and

  867. transforms us as a

  868. body as individuals

  869. surely but also as a

  870. body what we find in

  871. this passage is that

  872. the watching world

  873. will they marvel.

  874. Verse 46

  875. every day they the

  876. church continued to

  877. meet together in the

  878. temple courts they

  879. broke bread in their

  880. homes they ate

  881. together with glad

  882. and sincere hearts

  883. praising God and

  884. enjoying the favor of

  885. all the people and

  886. the Lord added to

  887. their number daily

  888. those who were being

  889. saved.

  890. The gospel renews us

  891. to live the lives that

  892. we were created to

  893. live.

  894. It renews us and when

  895. we begin to live that

  896. life out together

  897. somebody will notice.

  898. How did you get through

  899. that season?

  900. How did you pick

  901. yourself up?

  902. How did you put

  903. yourself through it?

  904. I didn't.

  905. I didn't.

  906. God was gracious to me.

  907. He met me in my

  908. church community.

  909. And they might think

  910. that we are crazy for

  911. the things that we

  912. believe.

  913. But we might also find

  914. that they long for the

  915. community that we find

  916. when a community is

  917. being shaped by the

  918. love and mercy of

  919. Jesus.

  920. because a community

  921. that is being shaped

  922. by the love and the

  923. mercy of Jesus finds

  924. itself becoming more

  925. merciful and loving

  926. itself.

  927. Meeting the needs of

  928. others.

  929. And the part of all of

  930. us that looks around

  931. and sees the glory of

  932. God in creation but

  933. then also feels like

  934. there's something wrong

  935. with me.

  936. I'm accountable to this

  937. God.

  938. that part of us is

  939. drawn powerfully to

  940. seeing the body of

  941. Christ living life

  942. together.

  943. Why do people love

  944. like that?

  945. Well, Jesus has loved

  946. us.

  947. The mark of love, the

  948. mark of those who have

  949. received great love is

  950. that they become loving

  951. themselves.

  952. And this is good news

  953. for us and it is good

  954. news for the world

  955. around us.

  956. Let's pray and ask God

  957. to help us live in

  958. light of that now.

  959. Amen.
