  1. So this evening we're going to look at this story, the next story in the life of Elisha.

  2. So that we can see what it is to have faith in the God of resurrection life.

  3. But we're going to begin by thinking about airline pilots.

  4. I am told that very early on in pilot school, pilot training,

  5. a vital skill that they need to learn is the ability to fly by their instruments,

  6. to be able to look at those super complicated dials and controls in order to fly straight,

  7. to land safely, to know where they're going in any weather conditions.

  8. You know, when the storm clouds come in, when the fog gathers, when you can't see naturally,

  9. you need to be able to fly by the instruments.

  10. And there's something helpful, I think, in that as we think about the picture of our own lives

  11. as something of a journey.

  12. Times in our lives when those storm clouds gather.

  13. And at that point we will find ourselves instinctively turning to something

  14. to give us guidance and stability.

  15. What is it that will keep us steady?

  16. What is it that will guide us home safely?

  17. We perhaps recognize that many people in our world are in a moment where they have rejected

  18. ideas of God and ultimate meaning and higher purpose.

  19. And lots of people are beginning to see, this is not working for me.

  20. There's that sense of instability, especially perhaps in times of trouble.

  21. And so you listen to commentators on society and they say, well, we're living in the age of anxiety.

  22. Whether that's about the environment or politics or about our own financial situation.

  23. Or people will say, we live in the age of consumption.

  24. And so we've never had it better and we're always consuming more.

  25. But the things that we are consuming are not tracking with happiness,

  26. but rather we're becoming more anxious and struggling with more fears.

  27. We live in what's known as the disenchanted age.

  28. We're being told, people have been told for years, there is nothing beyond ourselves.

  29. So just kind of make what you can of the world.

  30. But again, people are beginning to wrestle with this reality of knowing that there is something more.

  31. And so we live in a really interesting moment where people are turning to consider the spiritual

  32. and people are looking and seeking for transcendence.

  33. Where can hope be found?

  34. It's a question in every age and it's certainly a question in ours.

  35. It was a question in the time of Elisha as well.

  36. We have seen, especially in the time of Elijah, that most of the people in Israel,

  37. as they were looking for hope, had turned to the idol Baal.

  38. But it wasn't just then that people turned to idols.

  39. There's that instinct within our hearts at all times.

  40. If we think about Martin Luther, I think, has a really helpful definition of idolatry.

  41. Whatever we expect to provide all good and in which we take refuge in our distress,

  42. that's what our idol is.

  43. And so again, people are still looking for where am I going to find ultimate good?

  44. Where am I going to find a safe refuge?

  45. But outside of the God of the Bible, people are failing to provide and find solid hope.

  46. And in that setting, and relevant for our setting, we see in this woman from Shunem a picture of faith.

  47. Here is a woman who knows her God.

  48. And as we see, she lives for her God.

  49. And when things go wrong in her life, and they absolutely do, she runs to her God to find hope.

  50. And for us, as we pick up her story, and as we see the beginning and the end,

  51. we know that there is wonderful joy beyond the sorrow.

  52. And the story as a whole offers hope to us too, especially as we think about it in light of the gospel.

  53. When we think about the reality that God has sent His man Jesus to offer us renewal and resurrection life.

  54. He is God's final prophet.

  55. He is God's final word.

  56. And to lay hold on Him is to lay hold on a hope that will not fail.

  57. That in knowing God through His Son Jesus, we find that stability that we are looking for.

  58. We find that direction and meaning in the fog.

  59. And we have the promise of a true homecoming.

  60. And the joy of resurrection life.

  61. So we're going to do a couple of things this evening.

  62. First, we're going to put faith in focus.

  63. And then we'll think about having faith in the God of resurrection life.

  64. So, to our story, verse 8.

  65. One day, Elisha went to Shunem and a well-to-do woman was there who urged him to stay for a meal.

  66. So it's interesting.

  67. If you were here last week, we saw Elisha encountering a poor, starving woman.

  68. This time, a well-to-do woman who has enough to offer generous hospitality.

  69. God's going to show grace to them both.

  70. God's going to exercise His power in both of their stories, which always reminds us that God's grace runs wide.

  71. His kingdom is wide.

  72. Here is a woman who lives for God's glory.

  73. Here is a woman who's learned to rest in God's grace to her.

  74. And we see it, first of all, in her service.

  75. She urges Elisha to stay for a meal.

  76. And then she said to her husband in verse 9,

  77. I know this man who comes our way is a holy man of God.

  78. Let's make a small room for him.

  79. So there are their meals.

  80. She uses her resources to build an additional room up on the roof.

  81. Her life is one that makes room to encourage and to serve God's prophet.

  82. This is mission support.

  83. Because she knows Elisha is God's man, God's representative, who is bringing God's word into her region.

  84. So as she offers support and a base of operations, it becomes evident she wants the kingdom of God to grow.

  85. She wants others to hear the true message from God that they might believe and trust.

  86. Jesus would approve of her faith.

  87. We know this because in Matthew 10, he says,

  88. whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward.

  89. But then he goes on to say,

  90. even a cup of water offered in my name, well, that'll get a reward too.

  91. So her service is showing her faith.

  92. But I think we can also say that her secure identity shows that she has a real faith in her God.

  93. So here we find in verse 11 through to 13, first of all, Elisha and Gehazi are having a chat.

  94. And then Elisha says to Gehazi, his servant, tell her,

  95. you've gone to all this trouble for us.

  96. Now what can be done for you?

  97. Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?

  98. So remember, she knows this is God's holy man.

  99. She knows that Elisha works with God's power.

  100. So when Elisha comes to her house and says to her, what can I do for you?

  101. This is a massive offer.

  102. This is a finding the golden ticket kind of a moment.

  103. But the woman, even as she's offered like prestige and new connections,

  104. how does she reply?

  105. I have a home among my own people.

  106. She is content.

  107. She is content among her family, her connections within the community.

  108. She has this privilege of knowing and serving the God of glory by welcoming Elisha.

  109. God has given me this life and I'm content.

  110. She has a secure identity because her faith is in God.

  111. But we also see her faith and focus in her suffering.

  112. Because there is this wonderful announcement that God would give her a son.

  113. But this son that brings so much joy will also bring grief.

  114. We know that principle, don't we?

  115. Sometimes the gifts that we give or that we get,

  116. they can bring both gladness and they can bring sadness.

  117. We in our family, we can still remember getting our new puppy,

  118. a cute little bundle of fluff, joy.

  119. But then when you want to kind of settle down and just pet them and you discover

  120. and you've brought into the house a tiny shark that wants to chew your arm off,

  121. it's a little bit sad and frustrating.

  122. Sometimes the gifts that we receive, they bring gladness and sadness.

  123. And that's true of the gifts that God gives also.

  124. That this wonderful, precious gift of a son will become, in time, a source of her grief.

  125. We read of it, didn't we?

  126. We read of the boy's sudden illness.

  127. This promised, precious son, one day comes out to his father complaining,

  128. my head, my head.

  129. And he's carried home and he spends some hours in his mother's arms and he dies there.

  130. And all of a sudden life has taken a very different, unexpected turn

  131. and faith is shaken to the core.

  132. And she is very honest.

  133. We know in verse 27, as she arrives to meet Elisha, that her bitter distress is clear.

  134. Verse 28, we hear her words,

  135. Did I ask you for a son, my Lord?

  136. Didn't I tell you don't raise my hopes?

  137. So the storm clouds of grief, absolutely they've come rolling in.

  138. The light of God's love and kindness perhaps isn't evident in her situation,

  139. but she doesn't fall apart.

  140. And she doesn't give way to bitterness,

  141. but rather she runs to her God.

  142. There's a very clear direction of travel in her life.

  143. What does she do?

  144. It's really interesting.

  145. The first thing she does in verse 21 is she takes the boy and laid him on the bed of the man of God.

  146. What's she saying there?

  147. It's a recognition that she's going to bring this situation,

  148. bring her son to the Lord through Elisha.

  149. And then immediately that's what she does.

  150. She saddles up and prepares for her journey.

  151. And on this journey, she's not going to be distracted.

  152. She doesn't tell her husband.

  153. She tells her servant, make sure that we don't slow down.

  154. When Gehazi comes and greets her, is everything okay?

  155. We understand that no one else but God's prophet will do in her story.

  156. But when she comes to God's man, when she reached the man of God at the mountain,

  157. she took hold of his feet.

  158. And she pours out her heart.

  159. Because prayer is the breath of faith.

  160. She says to him in verse 30,

  161. As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.

  162. Actually, the same words that Elisha spoke about Elijah back in chapter 2

  163. when he knew that Elijah was going to be taken up to heaven.

  164. As the storm clouds roll in,

  165. as she flies by the instruments of her faith,

  166. we see so clearly,

  167. here is a woman who looks to God.

  168. Here is God's man,

  169. and therefore I am going to him with my problem,

  170. with my lament.

  171. He is going to be my refuge in distress.

  172. He is where I'm going to look to find good in this situation.

  173. And she is not disappointed.

  174. And that matters for us when we understand that for us,

  175. the man of God we run to is none other than the Lord Jesus.

  176. He is the one who is full of compassion.

  177. He invites us to pour out our hearts to him,

  178. to rest in his promise that he will be with us,

  179. that he will show us mercy.

  180. We look to our Lord and our Savior

  181. for that renewal that we need,

  182. for the promise of resurrection life in our experience.

  183. So as God brings the woman's faith into focus for ourselves,

  184. it helps us, I think, to reflect on our own faith

  185. and to ask ourselves some questions.

  186. As we see her sacrificial service,

  187. and as we understand that she saw herself as a vehicle,

  188. as a means for God's kingdom to be extended,

  189. as we understand what the Bible says,

  190. that the local church is God's plan,

  191. his mission plan for spreading his glory,

  192. and as we thought this morning,

  193. we have the wonderful privilege of being united together

  194. by God's grace within a local church family,

  195. are we involving ourselves in that privilege that God gives?

  196. Are we willing to serve and to commit ourselves?

  197. Here we get a wonderful little picture

  198. of how somebody can use their resources

  199. for the good of others.

  200. Here in particular, it was Elisha.

  201. How can we use our home, our money, our time

  202. as a tangible way to bless someone else?

  203. I think we've been encouraged as a church

  204. to see that from grace and peace.

  205. It's not going to look the same for us,

  206. but what will it look like?

  207. How will we as individuals and as a collective

  208. show that we want our life to be guided

  209. by the glory of Jesus and a concern for his kingdom?

  210. As we think about this woman's contentment

  211. and her secure identity,

  212. and as we recognize that we live in a time

  213. where advertising and social media

  214. is set up to fuel our discontent,

  215. psychologists are talking about that.

  216. You know, I read an article this week

  217. on social comparison, advertising,

  218. and consumer discontent.

  219. It's not subtle.

  220. It's deliberate.

  221. How can we stand apart?

  222. How can we show that we find our identity in Christ

  223. and not the stuff that we purchase

  224. and not in our digital presence?

  225. When Paul wrote to Timothy,

  226. he said to him,

  227. godliness with contentment is great gain.

  228. That's very countercultural,

  229. to be godly and to be content.

  230. But what a wonderful opportunity for us

  231. to bear witness to the fact

  232. that all we have is Christ.

  233. All that we need is Christ.

  234. We have something that money can't buy.

  235. We have a secure identity

  236. that is not based on the whims

  237. of social media likes or dislikes.

  238. Are we hearing,

  239. are we preaching the gospel to ourselves

  240. that we are saved by Christ?

  241. We are united to Christ.

  242. We are loved by our Father in heaven in Christ.

  243. The Spirit dwells in us

  244. that we belong to the Lord.

  245. And when suffering comes,

  246. and the Bible is so honest

  247. and tells us that in a fallen,

  248. in a broken world,

  249. suffering does come.

  250. Everybody hurts.

  251. That in a life of faith,

  252. we're not spared those hurts,

  253. that tests and trials

  254. do come our way.

  255. What is our response?

  256. Will we run to the God

  257. whose ways we don't

  258. and won't always understand?

  259. Because we know that he is good

  260. and he does what is good.

  261. Can we trust that God has established

  262. an everlasting covenant

  263. to delight in doing us good,

  264. even when we can't understand

  265. how our present circumstance

  266. could possibly be called good?

  267. Are we able to have faith

  268. that says with Paul,

  269. I know that God works all things,

  270. all things,

  271. for the good of those who love him?

  272. Can we pray with King David,

  273. when I am afraid,

  274. I put my trust in you,

  275. in God whose word I praise,

  276. in God I trust and am not afraid.

  277. Can we follow the example

  278. of Jesus our Savior

  279. going through the unimaginable

  280. spiritual agony

  281. of bearing the sins of his people

  282. and suffering the wrath of God

  283. still able to cry,

  284. my God, my God.

  285. Because as Joe was reflecting with us

  286. this morning,

  287. a vital part of our witness

  288. a vital part of our good news

  289. is going to be communicating

  290. how we are able to live with hope.

  291. How is it that we don't fall apart?

  292. And those moments

  293. and those situations

  294. give us the privilege

  295. of pointing to Jesus,

  296. our strength and our hope.

  297. To point people to Jesus

  298. who is God's great gift to the world,

  299. his own son sent to save us,

  300. the one who came to enter this broken world

  301. to bring healing.

  302. And every miracle that we find

  303. in the life of Jesus

  304. speaks to that great reality.

  305. We remember the Jesus we encounter

  306. in John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  307. When Jesus encountered another family mourning,

  308. Mary and Martha had lost their brother Lazarus.

  309. And we're told at the beginning of the text,

  310. Jesus will demonstrate his glory.

  311. And Jesus speaks words of truth

  312. to Martha.

  313. I am the resurrection and the life.

  314. He who believes in me will live

  315. even though they die.

  316. Do you believe this?

  317. A question for Martha.

  318. But it becomes a question for us all.

  319. Do we believe that God gives hope

  320. beyond death?

  321. That he gives resurrection life?

  322. On that day, he proved it.

  323. Calling Lazarus from the grave.

  324. And he would prove it in his own life.

  325. The Lord of life

  326. who rises from the dead in victory.

  327. And so faith for us

  328. focuses on the Lord Jesus.

  329. That regardless of circumstances

  330. to know that he is the Lord,

  331. he is present,

  332. he does supply grace,

  333. he does speak words that are true

  334. and words that speak life.

  335. Well, let's flip from having faith

  336. in focus in the context of the women

  337. to think about faith in the God

  338. of resurrection life.

  339. Because what happens next

  340. in the story is really striking.

  341. You know, from time to time,

  342. we will come across

  343. or we'll hear powerful stories

  344. of someone choosing to identify

  345. with others in their suffering.

  346. You know, maybe we hear

  347. extreme examples on the news

  348. of maybe doctors without borders

  349. going into war zones

  350. and risking everything

  351. for the sake of patience.

  352. Maybe closer to home.

  353. You know, the powerful witness

  354. of the body of Christ

  355. caring for a new mom

  356. or for a grieving family.

  357. But the power of seeing

  358. someone identify with

  359. and stand with another.

  360. Well, central to the hope

  361. of this story

  362. and actually central to

  363. the hope that we have,

  364. central to the hope

  365. that we offer to the world

  366. is this reality of God's prophet

  367. coming so close

  368. as to identify with this boy

  369. in his death.

  370. And through that action,

  371. resurrection life comes.

  372. So we'll pick up the action

  373. as the woman reaches Elisha.

  374. Verse 27,

  375. Which reached the man of God

  376. at the mountain.

  377. She took hold of his feet.

  378. Gehazi came over to push her away.

  379. But the man of God said,

  380. Leave her alone.

  381. She's in bitter distress.

  382. But the Lord has hidden it from me

  383. and has not told me why.

  384. That's significant, isn't it?

  385. There is going to be

  386. absolutely no doubt

  387. within this story

  388. who the power and glory belongs to.

  389. And it's not to Elisha

  390. because in this moment

  391. we see his limited wisdom.

  392. It belongs to Almighty God.

  393. As the story moves on,

  394. the cause of distress

  395. is clear in verse 28

  396. that the boy has died.

  397. And so the question now becomes,

  398. How will the boy be revived?

  399. Will there be hope found in this story?

  400. And if so, how?

  401. And to think about the wider question,

  402. How can the wreckage

  403. and the rubble of our society,

  404. of our life,

  405. become something beautiful?

  406. How can we see renewal

  407. come out of the wreckage?

  408. That's the tension within the story.

  409. Well, we discover one way

  410. that's not going to happen.

  411. It's not going to happen

  412. through the staff,

  413. the stick.

  414. In verse 29,

  415. we discover that Elisha

  416. sends Gehazi

  417. to take Elisha's staff

  418. and to lay the staff

  419. on the boy's face.

  420. But as we discover

  421. in verse 31,

  422. there was no sound,

  423. no response.

  424. The boy has not awakened.

  425. The staff worked in Moses' day.

  426. Remember in the book of Exodus,

  427. power and glory of God

  428. demonstrated through the symbol

  429. of the staff.

  430. It was held out

  431. and judgments came.

  432. It was held out

  433. and the Red Sea parted.

  434. Moses struck the rock

  435. and water came gushing out.

  436. But that's not how it works

  437. in this story.

  438. How will the boy be revived?

  439. It's as the prophet

  440. literally stretches himself out

  441. to identify with him

  442. in his death.

  443. It's there in verse 34,

  444. he lay on the boy

  445. mouth to mouth,

  446. eyes to eyes,

  447. hands to hands.

  448. As he stretched himself out

  449. and the boy's body grew warm,

  450. he walks around some more,

  451. he stretched out on him

  452. once more,

  453. the boy sneezed

  454. and opened his eyes.

  455. God breathes life

  456. as his prophet enters in

  457. and identifies with him

  458. in his day.

  459. And this woman has the privilege

  460. and the joy of resurrection life

  461. because she ran to the God

  462. of resurrection life.

  463. It's amazing to see

  464. in this single Old Testament story

  465. so many truths revealed about God

  466. that he is infinitely complex,

  467. that he's always bigger

  468. than our ability

  469. to place him within a box.

  470. So we discover

  471. that he is good and gracious.

  472. You know, often in the Bible

  473. when somebody can't have a child

  474. and then a child is given,

  475. it's because the child to be born

  476. will be so significant

  477. within the storyline of redemption.

  478. But not here.

  479. God just wants to be kind

  480. to this woman

  481. because he loves to be kind

  482. and generous.

  483. We discover in verse 16

  484. from the woman's words

  485. a reminder that

  486. God cannot mislead anybody.

  487. God is absolute rock-solid truth.

  488. And at the same time,

  489. we discover

  490. that God can perplex

  491. and confuse us

  492. because he does allow

  493. unexpected and painful things

  494. to happen.

  495. And he is able

  496. to bring ultimate good

  497. even from awful

  498. and evil things.

  499. And we discover

  500. that he is the Lord of life,

  501. he gave the gift of life,

  502. and he is the Lord

  503. of resurrection life.

  504. And it's as if God

  505. is saying to the woman

  506. and saying to Israel

  507. and saying to the church

  508. and saying to us today,

  509. trust me,

  510. place your hope in me.

  511. Don't place your hope

  512. in a small, limited idol.

  513. Rather, live by faith

  514. in the God of the Bible,

  515. the one who gives

  516. resurrection life.

  517. We read in Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  518. So we fast forward

  519. hundreds of years,

  520. but we're still

  521. in the same geographical area.

  522. Shunem and Nain

  523. are just two miles apart.

  524. And here we find Jesus

  525. coming into this

  526. mountainous region,

  527. and he comes upon

  528. a funeral procession.

  529. There's more grief

  530. and there's mourning,

  531. and Jesus canceled the funeral.

  532. And how did he do it?

  533. He identified

  534. with the dead man.

  535. He did what was unthinkable.

  536. He touched the coffin.

  537. And he spoke to the man

  538. to command life.

  539. And life came.

  540. Remember what the crowd said?

  541. A great prophet

  542. has appeared among us.

  543. God has come

  544. to help his people.

  545. Did they remember

  546. the story passed down

  547. from their region

  548. of what Elisha had done

  549. from the women of Shunem?

  550. Perhaps.

  551. But they understand

  552. the connection

  553. that when someone comes

  554. and speaks to a dead man

  555. and life comes,

  556. this is a man from God.

  557. And he's come to help

  558. and to save.

  559. And then we move

  560. to another mountain.

  561. We move to Mount Calvary.

  562. And there we see

  563. Jesus, the great prophet,

  564. stretched out in death

  565. to identify

  566. with his people

  567. so that in his death

  568. and his resurrection,

  569. we can find resurrection life

  570. if we believe in him.

  571. And that's only possible

  572. because Jesus identifies

  573. with us.

  574. We know that

  575. because he became

  576. one of us.

  577. He humbled himself

  578. to add humanity

  579. to his perfect divinity.

  580. He entered into the world

  581. that he made

  582. to live that life

  583. of perfect obedience

  584. and perfect love

  585. that you and I

  586. should but can.

  587. And he came

  588. to take death

  589. as the punishment

  590. for law-breaking,

  591. for our lack of love,

  592. the punishment

  593. that we should take,

  594. but now we don't have to

  595. if our faith is in Jesus.

  596. He takes our humanity,

  597. he takes our death,

  598. he completes God's plan

  599. of salvation

  600. and by his wounds,

  601. we are healed

  602. because Jesus is the Lord

  603. of resurrection life.

  604. Risen from the dead,

  605. he now gives spiritual life

  606. in the place

  607. of spiritual death

  608. when we turn from our sin

  609. to trust in him.

  610. He gives us living hope

  611. in place of despair

  612. when our eyes are fixed

  613. on him.

  614. This is a story

  615. that matters.

  616. It matters

  617. because it reminds us

  618. that Jesus

  619. is our hope

  620. for salvation.

  621. How can I be right

  622. with God?

  623. How can I be forgiven

  624. of my sin?

  625. How can I be welcomed

  626. back into friendship

  627. with the God

  628. that I've turned

  629. my back on?

  630. It's through God's grace

  631. to us in Jesus.

  632. His finished work

  633. on the cross.

  634. His call

  635. to repent

  636. and believe.

  637. But it also matters

  638. for us

  639. when we think

  640. about the mission

  641. of the church.

  642. Because we are not

  643. called into mission

  644. to rely on our own

  645. strength and power.

  646. Rather,

  647. we rely

  648. on the power

  649. of God.

  650. We go

  651. in the strength

  652. of God's

  653. gospel promises.

  654. He is the one

  655. who can change

  656. the hardest heart.

  657. He is the one

  658. who can enter

  659. into

  660. the most broken

  661. of lives.

  662. He is the one

  663. who is pleased.

  664. He delights

  665. to show grace

  666. to those

  667. who seem

  668. the most unlikely

  669. candidates.

  670. And because

  671. that's true

  672. and because

  673. it's God

  674. who saves,

  675. it's God

  676. who gives

  677. new life,

  678. that gives us

  679. confidence

  680. that God

  681. will save,

  682. will give

  683. new life

  684. to all

  685. He is calling.

  686. And so we

  687. can share faith,

  688. we can present

  689. the gospel,

  690. trusting in the

  691. God who can bring

  692. life where

  693. previously there

  694. was death.

  695. But it also

  696. matters

  697. when we find

  698. ourselves

  699. like this woman

  700. going through

  701. the storms

  702. of life.

  703. Because we know

  704. it won't always

  705. be sunshine

  706. and smooth sailing

  707. and Jesus

  708. never promised

  709. us that.

  710. But in the

  711. story of

  712. the death

  713. and resurrection

  714. of the Lord

  715. Jesus,

  716. in His identifying

  717. with us in order

  718. to save us,

  719. we have found

  720. who we are to

  721. fix our eyes on

  722. as the right

  723. source of our

  724. hope,

  725. none other than

  726. the risen ruling

  727. Lord Jesus.

  728. There's where we

  729. go for that hope

  730. that will not fail.

  731. So as God

  732. reveals to us

  733. through this story

  734. His power to

  735. bring resurrection

  736. life,

  737. He invites us

  738. all to find

  739. living hope

  740. in Him,

  741. to find that

  742. powerful hope,

  743. to find that

  744. life and death

  745. hope through

  746. knowing Jesus

  747. as our Lord

  748. and our Savior.

  749. Let's pray.

  750. holy
