  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah. It is wonderful

  2. that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either

  3. by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray for

  4. us that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian, we really,

  6. I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the Bible,

  7. they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will

  8. do what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a

  9. non-Christian checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't

  10. hesitate to send us questions. It helps me, actually, to know, as I'm preaching, how to

  11. deal with the types of things that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. Let's just bow our heads in prayer. Father, we give you thanks and praise for Jesus. We give

  13. you thanks and praise that He died on the cross as our substitute to be our Savior. We give you thanks

  14. and praise that there is no human being so far from you, no human being who has done anything so evil

  15. that your Son's death upon the cross is not sufficient to save them. That you have and can and will forgive

  16. even the worst when they come to you, asking for your forgiveness and for Jesus to be their Savior and

  17. their Lord. So Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would bring these precious truths home to us in a

  18. very powerful way as we look at your Word. May they form our heart and how we live. And we ask these

  19. things in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen. Please be seated.

  20. Amen.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I think I

  24. guilty person or stop the bad thing from happening.

  25. And most of the more popular books in that genre

  26. have a bit of a semi-tortured hero.

  27. Somebody who in fact is struggling

  28. because they've done some horrible things

  29. and they're a bit uncomfortable with their conscience,

  30. so to speak, as they try to deal with that other issue.

  31. And so it's just, I think it's now viewed as a very

  32. common place of contemporary wisdom that people need

  33. to learn how to forgive themselves.

  34. But the problem is, like why is it that this is going on

  35. in the culture?

  36. And you know, the problem is, and many of us are probably

  37. living with this right now, some of us have seasons

  38. in our lives and sometimes those seasons of our lives

  39. can last a very, very, very long time.

  40. When we have a conscience that accuses us constantly.

  41. Our conscience isn't quiet and it isn't settled.

  42. But it's as if there's something inside of our head

  43. with a loud voice that accuses us over and over and over again.

  44. And it affects how we relate to other people.

  45. And it affects our sleep.

  46. It just deeply affects us.

  47. And on top of that, some of us maybe live with,

  48. it's not just a voice inside of our head which is accusing us

  49. very shrilly.

  50. But we actually might live or see regularly somebody who accuses us.

  51. And that is how a lot of us live.

  52. And I think it's in that context that our cultural wisdom

  53. is that we have to learn to forgive ourselves.

  54. It's an attempt to quieten that conscience which accuses us,

  55. which says you are no good.

  56. You are terrible.

  57. You always do terrible things.

  58. Did you see what you just did?

  59. That just shows how bad you are.

  60. I am bad.

  61. You are bad.

  62. It's just over and over and over in our head.

  63. So how do we live with that?

  64. Well, actually, believe it or not,

  65. the Bible text that was just read by Josiah,

  66. on one hand, probably some of you find the text very, very boring.

  67. And in some ways, it is a bit of a boring text for a lot of us Canadians.

  68. It might not be boring for lawyers

  69. because of the two legal arguments summarized in it.

  70. And I don't know if you picked up that actually within that,

  71. there's not only something which is in the midst of that story,

  72. which some of us would have found boring.

  73. It's actually a thing that if you understood what he just said,

  74. you'd go, whoa, whoa, he just said that?

  75. Because he touches on something which for many people in our culture,

  76. we find, they find is a problem with Christianity.

  77. But it's actually in this story,

  78. if you actually enter into what's going on in the story,

  79. there's a key building block of solving the problem of accusing conscience.

  80. And the key building block is vastly better

  81. than the futile attempt to forgive yourself.

  82. So open your Bibles.

  83. Let's have a look and see what it says.

  84. And we're looking at Acts chapter 24.

    Acts 24 chapter mention

  85. And if you're watching or you're here

  86. and you haven't been to our church before,

  87. we preach through books of the Bible.

  88. We're going through the book of Acts.

  89. It's an...

  90. And we've started chapter one.

  91. We're going to go right till the end.

  92. And we're looking at chapter 24.

  93. And what has just sort of happened here

  94. is that Paul, who's an apostle,

  95. he's in Roman custody.

  96. He's been accused of things that he hadn't done.

  97. There's been a mob that tried to kill him.

  98. There's been a plot to try to kill him

  99. and to save him from the plot.

  100. The Romans, when they discover he's also a Roman citizen,

  101. they've brought him into still not protective custody.

  102. It's still criminal custody, not protective custody.

  103. It's criminal custody.

  104. And they've brought him to the capital of the whole region

  105. before the governor of the whole region

  106. so that there could be a type of trial

  107. about what should be done about Paul.

  108. And that's where we are in the story.

  109. And so let's begin at chapter 24, verse one.

  110. And here's how it goes.

  111. And after five days...

  112. So the five days is the plot to murder Paul.

  113. So five days after the plot to murder Paul,

  114. the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders.

  115. They're sort of...

  116. Elders is a good translation,

  117. but what you should understand,

  118. it's a bit of a formal title for the nobility.

  119. Okay, so Ananias, who's the high priest,

  120. has come down with some other people of the priestly elite,

  121. and he's also brought some of the secular elite,

  122. so to speak, down for this trial.

  123. So they're very invested in finding Paul guilty

  124. so that he will be killed.

  125. That's...

  126. If you don't understand that it's all about Paul being killed,

  127. you won't understand the drama of the text.

  128. By the way, I planned it exactly

  129. that there'd be kids coming in at a dramatic moment like that.

  130. It takes lots of extra planning to do that.

  131. So verse 21 again.

  132. And after five days,

  133. the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders,

  134. or the lay nobility,

  135. and a spokesman, one Tertullus,

  136. basically a lawyer,

  137. because it's going to be a trial.

  138. And they laid before the governor

  139. their case against Paul.

  140. And when he had been summoned,

  141. Tertullus began to accuse Paul,

  142. saying...

  143. Now, just before we go any more into it,

  144. just a bit of an aside,

  145. in terms of the historical accuracy of the book,

  146. Ananias, the high priest,

  147. is...

  148. They know a lot about him

  149. because a Jewish historian wrote about him.

  150. And at the end of this,

  151. we're going to discover that it's Felix,

  152. who was the Roman governor,

  153. and they know a lot about Felix

  154. because the Roman historian Tacitus

  155. talked about him.

  156. And if you're very curious,

  157. you can go into some academic commentaries,

  158. and they'll talk about how Tacitus lived

  159. and Ananias lived

  160. and their conflicts

  161. and all of that other stuff.

  162. There's this whole other subtext going on

  163. in the bottom of it.

  164. But the bottom line is

  165. that if you know the historical record

  166. about these two men,

  167. you'll understand that what happens in this story

  168. is completely plausible and reasonable.

  169. There's no reason historically to doubt

  170. that this actually happened

  171. and that this is an accurate state of affairs.

  172. So what's their argument

  173. as to why Felix should put Paul to death?

  174. This is life and death.

  175. It begins then in verse 2, halfway through.

  176. Tertullus says,

  177. Since through you we enjoy peace,

  178. much peace,

  179. and since by your foresight,

  180. most excellent Felix,

  181. reforms are being made for this nation.

  182. In every way and everywhere,

  183. we accept this with all gratitude.

  184. So basically, this is just a summary.

  185. Like in real life,

  186. he spent 20 minutes, 25 minutes,

  187. shameless flattery.

  188. That's what he would have done.

  189. And by the way,

  190. we know that flattery works.

  191. Otherwise, people would stop using flattery.

  192. But it's just shameless flattery.

  193. They just summarized it very briefly.

  194. And then it continues, verse 4,

  195. But to detain you no further,

  196. I beg you in your kindness

  197. to hear us briefly.

  198. For we found this man a plague,

  199. one who stirs up riots.

  200. Sorry, that's verse 5.

  201. For we have found this man a plague,

  202. one who stirs up riots

  203. among all the Jewish people

  204. throughout the world,

  205. and is a ringleader of the sect

  206. of the Nazarenes.

  207. Now, just pause here.

  208. The word translated is plague.

  209. It's a very good word,

  210. but it's actually a technical legal term.

  211. And so what the charge is,

  212. is they've said,

  213. the word for plague

  214. could also be translated

  215. as public enemy.

  216. And so the charge that they're going,

  217. they're not going after anything

  218. religious with Paul.

  219. Paul knows that it's,

  220. for religious reasons,

  221. that they're after him.

  222. But they don't use that.

  223. They don't use anything spiritual.

  224. They go after a very, very,

  225. very serious crime,

  226. and it's the crime of sedition.

  227. That Paul is a well-traveled public enemy.

  228. That's what the word plague is.

  229. And so you can get it.

  230. It's a plague.

  231. He's a public enemy

  232. that's just going to spread

  233. and spread and spread

  234. unless you put him to death.

  235. And even when they say

  236. that he's a ringleader

  237. of the sect of the Nazarenes,

  238. that's furthering their claim

  239. that he is a public menace.

  240. Why?

  241. Because they say you follow Jesus.

  242. And who's Jesus?

  243. Well, Jesus was executed

  244. 20-some years earlier

  245. for being the king of the Jews.

  246. He's been accused of sedition.

  247. Verse 6,

  248. he even tried to profane the temple.

  249. So now they're sort of

  250. giving him some arguments.

  251. He even tried to profane the temple, right?

  252. He's a troublemaker.

  253. But we seized him.

  254. We're the good guys.

  255. We're the good guys.

  256. We seized him.

  257. Verse 8,

  258. By examining him yourself,

  259. you will be able to find out from him

  260. about everything of which we accuse him.

  261. The Jews also joined the charge

  262. affirming that all these things

  263. were so offering of our evidence.

  264. And the thing to remember

  265. in all of this

  266. is that in Roman trials,

  267. you are not innocent

  268. until proven guilty.

  269. That's why Paul is still

  270. not in protective custody,

  271. but in criminal custody.

  272. He is not innocent.

  273. They've made this accusation against him.

  274. In Canada,

  275. at least,

  276. I think still primarily,

  277. I don't have to say a single word

  278. in my defense

  279. if I'm accused of that.

  280. They have to prove the case.

  281. Not there.

  282. Paul has to prove his innocence.

  283. It's a very, very clever legal ploy.

  284. So what's Paul going to do about it?

  285. Well, verse 10,

  286. And when the governor

  287. had nodded to him to speak,

  288. Paul replied.

  289. Paul has trained in rhetoric.

  290. He's going to defend himself.

  291. And he says this,

  292. Knowing that for many years

  293. you have been a judge

  294. over this nation,

  295. I cheerfully make my defense.

  296. Now, by the way,

  297. we don't know if when he says cheerfully

  298. he's, like most of us,

  299. his knees are going like this

  300. and there's sweat pouring down,

  301. you know,

  302. but he said at least cheerfully.

  303. That's, I guess,

  304. maybe his aspiration

  305. rather than what he's actually

  306. really feeling right then.

  307. We'll say that again.

  308. I cheerfully make my defense.

  309. You can verify

  310. that it is not more than 12 days

  311. since I went up to worship

  312. in Jerusalem

  313. and that they did not find me

  314. disputing with anyone

  315. or stirring up a crowd

  316. either in the temple

  317. or in the synagogues

  318. or in the city.

  319. And what Paul's going to do

  320. is he's going to try

  321. to ignore the sedition thing.

  322. He's going to just say

  323. there's no evidence of this

  324. and he's going to try

  325. to bring it back

  326. to a type of religious issue.

  327. But here's the point.

  328. Unless you're a lawyer

  329. and you're really interested

  330. in the strategy,

  331. we're coming to the part

  332. which is that

  333. we just read over

  334. but actually

  335. we should understand

  336. that that's like a woe moment.

  337. Okay?

  338. Verse 13.

  339. Neither can they prove to you

  340. what they now bring up against me.

  341. But this I confess to you

  342. that according to the way,

  343. it's an early way

  344. of describing Christianity

  345. as the way,

  346. which they call a sect,

  347. I worship the God

  348. of our fathers,

  349. believing everything

  350. laid down by the law

  351. and written by the prophets.

  352. That's why Christians,

  353. I sometimes shock

  354. some of my Jewish friends

  355. or acquaintances,

  356. they don't,

  357. there's a lot of Jewish people

  358. who don't understand

  359. that Christians believe

  360. the Old Testament

  361. is part of their Bible.

  362. I mean,

  363. I say that to some

  364. and they go,

  365. like,

  366. they make a bit of a surprise

  367. to me.

  368. But it's,

  369. Christians believe

  370. the Old Testament

  371. is part of the Bible.

  372. Verse 15.

  373. Having a hope in God,

  374. now here's the hope,

  375. which these men accept,

  376. okay,

  377. what's Paul's hope?

  378. which these men themselves

  379. accept,

  380. the Jews,

  381. that there will be

  382. a resurrection

  383. of both the just

  384. and the unjust.

  385. Now,

  386. pause here.

  387. That's,

  388. this is a woe moment.

  389. Woe.

  390. This is the language.

  391. Paul

  392. is a nobody.

  393. Paul's a nobody.

  394. I mean,

  395. it's sort of one of those

  396. ironies of history

  397. that today,

  398. unless you happen

  399. to go to a church

  400. and they happen

  401. to preach on Acts,

  402. or unless you're

  403. into ancient Roman society,

  404. you have no idea

  405. who Felix is

  406. or Ananias.

  407. Paul has schools

  408. named after him,

  409. cities are named after him,

  410. but back then,

  411. he's a nobody,

  412. complete and utter nobody,

  413. surrounded by all

  414. of the powerful people

  415. in criminal custody,

  416. and he's looking,

  417. the governor,

  418. whose nation

  419. has conquered

  420. the Jewish people,

  421. and he's saying,

  422. this is my hope.

  423. My hope is

  424. that there will one day

  425. be a true

  426. and greater court,

  427. and every human being,

  428. the implication,

  429. you too,

  430. are going to stand

  431. before the triune God

  432. and be judged,

  433. and not everybody

  434. is going to be found

  435. innocent,

  436. and by him saying

  437. it's a hope,

  438. his belief

  439. is that when

  440. that final,

  441. true,

  442. and greater court

  443. comes,

  444. called by the triune God,

  445. every single person

  446. who's ever lived

  447. is going to appear

  448. before it,

  449. some will be found

  450. guilty,

  451. and this leads into

  452. the whole doctrine

  453. of eternal punishment,

  454. but my hope is

  455. that I will stand

  456. in that judgment,

  457. and he says that

  458. to the Roman governor.

  459. That's a woe moment.

  460. I bet the Jewish people

  461. went,

  462. woe,

  463. and then they probably

  464. chuckled,

  465. now we got him.

  466. He's just insulted

  467. Felix.

  468. He's just called

  469. into question

  470. everything that

  471. Felix is doing.

  472. He's implying

  473. that there's a chance

  474. that Felix,

  475. when he appears

  476. before the triune God,

  477. will be found guilty

  478. and judged by God.

  479. They're chuckling

  480. to themselves,

  481. and who knows,

  482. maybe some of Paul's

  483. friends are thinking,

  484. Paul,

  485. that's not a smart move.

  486. Paul is playing

  487. for bigger stakes.

  488. In a sense,

  489. what's going through

  490. Paul's heart

  491. is what does it

  492. profit me

  493. to stand justified

  494. before God

  495. on the judgment day

  496. when I didn't give

  497. Felix an opportunity

  498. to also stand

  499. and be found

  500. justified

  501. on the last day

  502. of judgment.

  503. What's far more

  504. important?

  505. In Felix's mind,

  506. he's probably going,

  507. hmm,

  508. this is interesting.

  509. I'm a Roman.

  510. You're a Jew

  511. under my thumb.

  512. I'm a governor.

  513. You're a nobody.

  514. I'm rich.

  515. You're a nobody.

  516. I'm powerful.

  517. You're a nobody.

  518. My brother

  519. personally knows

  520. the emperor.

  521. Da-da-da-da.

  522. You're a nobody.

  523. You're in my court.

  524. You're a nobody.

  525. I get to decide

  526. your fate.

  527. You're a nobody.

  528. That's probably

  529. what's going through

  530. his mind.

  531. But Paul makes

  532. this very,

  533. very bold claim.

  534. And as we're going

  535. to see for a moment,

  536. it's going to be

  537. something that he

  538. doubles down on

  539. in a couple of minutes.

  540. Let's look what happens.

  541. Verse 16.

  542. So,

  543. this is what he says.

  544. And here's where

  545. it touches in

  546. with what I said.

  547. It's actually something

  548. which is important

  549. to understand

  550. the issue

  551. of a severely

  552. accusing conscience.

  553. Look what he says

  554. in verse 16.

  555. So,

  556. he has this hope

  557. that every single

  558. human being

  559. will appear

  560. before the judgment

  561. seat of the triune God.

  562. This,

  563. by the way,

  564. is not a popular

  565. doctrine in Canada,

  566. in case you're not

  567. aware of that.

  568. And my hope is

  569. that when that happens,

  570. I will be declared

  571. innocent.

  572. And then,

  573. look,

  574. he directly connects

  575. this to his conscience.

  576. Look at verse 16.

  577. So,

  578. I always take pains

  579. to have a clear conscience

  580. before both God

  581. and human beings.

  582. Continues.

  583. Now,

  584. after several years,

  585. I came to bring alms

  586. to my nation.

  587. In other words,

  588. rather than coming

  589. to bring trouble,

  590. I brought money

  591. to help the poor

  592. and to present offerings.

  593. While I was doing this,

  594. they found me purified

  595. in the temple

  596. without any crowd

  597. or tumult.

  598. It's a religious question,

  599. not political.

  600. But some Jewish people

  601. from Western Turkey,

  602. they ought to be here

  603. before you

  604. and make an accusation

  605. should they have

  606. anything against me.

  607. In other words,

  608. none of these people

  609. actually witnessed

  610. the thing

  611. that got me into custody.

  612. All of their testimony

  613. is completely

  614. and utterly valid.

  615. The lawyers amongst

  616. will say that it's hearsay

  617. and hence doesn't have

  618. any place in the court.

  619. Verse 20,

  620. or else let these men

  621. themselves say

  622. what wrongdoing

  623. they found

  624. when I stood

  625. before the council.

  626. Other than this one thing

  627. that I cried out

  628. while standing among them,

  629. it is respect.

  630. Look at this again.

  631. To the resurrection

  632. of the dead

  633. that I am in trial

  634. to you this day.

  635. He returns to it,

  636. although obviously

  637. in a bit of a different tenor,

  638. hinting at why

  639. he has a conscience

  640. before him.

  641. Now, how does it all

  642. play out?

  643. Well, I'm going to get

  644. into this whole issue

  645. of the judgment,

  646. but we need to see

  647. the rest of the story

  648. because it's going to

  649. come up a third time

  650. in the text.

  651. Look at verse 22.

  652. But Felix,

  653. having a rather

  654. accurate knowledge

  655. of the way,

  656. put them off,

  657. that's the Ananias

  658. and the Jewish elite,

  659. by saying,

  660. when Lysias,

  661. the tribune,

  662. comes down,

  663. I will decide

  664. your case.

  665. Then he gave orders

  666. to the centurion

  667. that Paul should be

  668. kept in custody

  669. but have some liberty

  670. that none of his friends

  671. should be prevented

  672. from attending

  673. to his needs.

  674. Paul is still going

  675. to remain

  676. in criminal custody.

  677. Verse 24,

  678. after some days,

  679. Felix came with

  680. his wife Drusilia,

  681. who was Jewish,

  682. and Felix sent

  683. for Paul

  684. and heard him speak.

  685. Now, what does

  686. Paul speak about?

  687. Third time,

  688. he talks about

  689. faith in Christ Jesus

  690. and as Paul reasoned

  691. about righteousness

  692. and self-control

  693. and the coming judgment.

  694. Felix was alarmed

  695. and said,

  696. go away for the present.

  697. When I get an opportunity,

  698. I will summon you.

  699. At the same time,

  700. Felix was hoping

  701. that money would be given

  702. to him by Paul.

  703. In other words,

  704. he's hoping for a bribe.

  705. So he sent for Paul

  706. often and conversed

  707. with him.

  708. For two years,

  709. when two years had elapsed,

  710. Felix was succeeded

  711. by Porcius Festus

  712. and desiring to do

  713. the Jewish elites

  714. a favor,

  715. Felix left Paul

  716. in prison.

  717. So,

  718. what's going on?

  719. Well,

  720. on one hand,

  721. what's going on here

  722. in this story

  723. is,

  724. here's the problem.

  725. So,

  726. on one hand,

  727. how you can read this story.

  728. This is a story

  729. that,

  730. on one hand,

  731. probably none of us

  732. have been in

  733. this exact situation,

  734. but many of us

  735. have been in situations

  736. which are similar,

  737. which is that

  738. you're innocent,

  739. you have the evidence

  740. on your side,

  741. but your enemies

  742. are powerful,

  743. they are insistent

  744. upon your defeat,

  745. they will not listen

  746. to reason,

  747. and the ones

  748. who can judge it

  749. are corrupt.

  750. Or,

  751. in other words,

  752. what,

  753. they're corrupt,

  754. that's maybe a strong word.

  755. Sometimes we've all been,

  756. and maybe it's been

  757. in a church,

  758. maybe it's been

  759. in school,

  760. maybe it's been

  761. a place of our employment,

  762. where the person

  763. who makes the decision,

  764. rather than looking

  765. at the facts of the case,

  766. does this,

  767. and sees which way

  768. is the wind blowing

  769. from the powerful.

  770. And that's what's

  771. going on in the story.

  772. So,

  773. on one hand,

  774. it's a very,

  775. very human story.

  776. We've all probably

  777. been in some situations

  778. similar to this.

  779. But the big issue

  780. is,

  781. what does this have to do

  782. with accusing conscience,

  783. and how on earth

  784. can this idea

  785. that human beings

  786. are going to appear

  787. before the judgment seat

  788. of God,

  789. and be judged by Him,

  790. every single human being,

  791. how can this actually

  792. be helpful to anything?

  793. In fact,

  794. I think if you'd ask,

  795. and it wouldn't matter

  796. if you were in

  797. the most trendy coffee house,

  798. it wouldn't matter

  799. if you were in a Tim Hortons,

  800. or everything in between,

  801. it wouldn't matter

  802. if you went into

  803. an elite cocktail bar,

  804. or like a low-level pub,

  805. many people would say

  806. that they could never

  807. believe in a God

  808. who judges.

  809. That's one of the problems

  810. I have with Christianity,

  811. George.

  812. You believe there's going

  813. to be a final judgment,

  814. some people are going

  815. to go to eternal punishment,

  816. others are going

  817. to be saved,

  818. I could never believe

  819. in a God

  820. or a religion

  821. that talks about

  822. stuff like that.

  823. Paul is tripled down

  824. on this particular topic.

  825. So how can this actually

  826. be part of the help?

  827. Well, here's the first thing

  828. to think about,

  829. and this might be something

  830. you might want to say.

  831. Maybe if you're thinking

  832. these very things yourself,

  833. this is something here

  834. you'd consider.

  835. Or if it comes up

  836. in conversation,

  837. it's come up in conversation

  838. with me, by the way.

  839. Sometimes people,

  840. after I've talked to them

  841. about Christianity

  842. for a while,

  843. have brought this issue

  844. up to me,

  845. and in a second way,

  846. because they'll also say,

  847. okay, by the way, George,

  848. you actually think,

  849. you think you're going

  850. to stand in the judgment day

  851. and I won't?

  852. And you can sort of

  853. see them smirk,

  854. like, really?

  855. You think you're

  856. that much better than me?

  857. Like, really?

  858. And the implication is

  859. that I'm very deluded.

  860. But here's some things

  861. we could say.

  862. The first one is this.

  863. Everybody wants to live

  864. in a moral universe.

  865. We want to live

  866. in a moral universe

  867. at a very fundamental level.

  868. If you watch

  869. the Netflix series,

  870. it's very, very dark.

  871. I'm not recommending it.

  872. It's called

  873. American Primeval.

  874. But one of the things

  875. which makes that series

  876. so dark

  877. is it's a fundamentally

  878. amoral place.

  879. And when it's

  880. an amoral world,

  881. all that matters

  882. is who has the gun,

  883. who will kill

  884. to get what they want.

  885. We want to live

  886. in a moral universe

  887. at a very fundamental level.

  888. But here's the question.

  889. How on earth

  890. can we live

  891. in a moral universe

  892. if there's not

  893. a final judgment?

  894. You can't have

  895. a moral universe

  896. without a final judgment.

  897. If there's no final judgment,

  898. even if there's morality,

  899. it's not a moral universe.

  900. I'm not going to give you

  901. any spoiler alerts,

  902. but occasionally,

  903. there'll be movies

  904. that you can watch.

  905. And, you know,

  906. in hindsight,

  907. I'll go back and think,

  908. oh, it's one of those movies

  909. that had like a 96%

  910. critics liked it

  911. and 4% viewers liked it.

  912. And that should tell you

  913. something right off the bat

  914. if you have a movie

  915. that's reviewed like that.

  916. And it's a movie

  917. where at the end of the movie,

  918. the victims die,

  919. the persecutors live,

  920. the oppressors live,

  921. those oppressing die.

  922. The people who do

  923. horrendous things,

  924. they live,

  925. and the people

  926. who've been trying

  927. to do the good thing,

  928. they all die.

  929. And you end up

  930. watching a movie like that

  931. and you think,

  932. this is not like

  933. a moral movie.

  934. Like, I think to myself,

  935. I've wasted my time

  936. watching a movie like this.

  937. If there's no type

  938. of final judgment

  939. in the world,

  940. and all you have

  941. is this life,

  942. even if you have a sense

  943. that there is right and wrong,

  944. it's not a moral universe

  945. unless there's

  946. a final judgment.

  947. People don't think about that.

  948. And then the second thing

  949. about it is about,

  950. and it goes without

  951. being a moral universe,

  952. is you can't have

  953. a moral universe

  954. if there's no guilt,

  955. if there's nothing

  956. like conscience

  957. which is built into you.

  958. And here's a problem

  959. for our culture.

  960. You know,

  961. the most successful species

  962. are like ants

  963. and cockroaches

  964. and they have no conscience.

  965. Conscience doesn't do anything

  966. to increase your chance

  967. of your species surviving,

  968. but we have consciences

  969. and we actually really

  970. need to have a conscience

  971. and we need to have guilt.

  972. I've told some of you

  973. this story before.

  974. I haven't used it

  975. for a couple of years,

  976. but a couple of years ago

  977. there was an interview

  978. with a well-known actress

  979. and they said

  980. if there's one thing

  981. you could change about life,

  982. what would you change?

  983. And she said

  984. if I could change anything

  985. in the world,

  986. it would be to get rid of guilt,

  987. that I have no sense

  988. of guilt whatsoever.

  989. And the interviewer

  990. sort of nodded.

  991. I mean, obviously,

  992. I'm reading it,

  993. but you could tell

  994. they were nodding

  995. with approval,

  996. but she just said

  997. she wanted to be

  998. a sociopath.

  999. I don't know

  1000. if it's a sociopath

  1001. or a psychopath.

  1002. Whatever one it is

  1003. that has no guilt.

  1004. She just said,

  1005. I want to be a psychopath.

  1006. And the other person

  1007. nodded as if,

1008. like, this is a really good idea.

  1009. It's not a good idea

  1010. to be a psychopath.

  1011. Psychopaths don't have

  1012. that experience of guilt.

  1013. You see,

  1014. part of our rejection,

  1015. the human rejection

  1016. of the idea

  1017. that there is

  1018. a final judgment

  1019. is the sense

  1020. that if there is,

  1021. you won't pass.

  1022. Only the raging narcissist

  1023. think,

  1024. oh yeah, that's good.

1025. I'm looking forward to it.

  1026. Look at my dimple.

  1027. Dimple?

  1028. I don't know if I have dimples,

  1029. you know.

1030. You know, look at my scars.

1031. God, I'm in for sure, right?

  1032. And especially, you know,

  1033. for those of us

  1034. who have accusing consciences,

  1035. this whole idea

  1036. that we will appear

1037. before the judgment seat of God

  1038. just seems to

  1039. even be more depressing

1040. and create even more despair.

1041. But is Paul a narcissist?

  1042. Like, as I said,

  1043. when I've talked

  1044. to some people occasionally,

  1045. it hasn't happened

1046. in a couple of years,

  1047. they directly asked me,

1048. do you think I'm going

  1049. to go to hell

  1050. if I don't believe in Jesus?

  1051. I wasn't expecting

  1052. that question.

  1053. And I started

  1054. to give an answer.

  1055. And the person said,

1056. so you think you won't?

  1057. You'll pass the judgment,

  1058. but I won't?

  1059. And that's when

  1060. they just looked.

  1061. like there's something

  1062. hopeless about me

  1063. if I think that's

1064. what's going to happen to me.

  1065. Well,

  1066. the Bible is wise.

  1067. I mean, I've already

  1068. pointed out to you,

  1069. you can't live

  1070. in a moral universe.

  1071. You want to live

  1072. in a moral universe,

1073. but you can't live in one

1074. if there is no final judgment.

  1075. Then by death,

1076. it is not going to be

  1077. a moral universe.

1078. And you need to have conscience.

1079. If there's no type of conscience,

1080. then you want to live

  1081. in a world filled

  1082. with psychopaths.

1083. And if there's in fact

  1084. something in your conscience

  1085. that knows that

  1086. if you actually stood

  1087. before the God

1088. as described in the Bible,

  1089. you wouldn't pass.

  1090. Well,

  1091. you see,

  1092. here's how Canadians

  1093. think a little bit

  1094. about this whole question,

1095. about whether I would stand

  1096. or not,

  1097. or they would.

  1098. The average Canadian

  1099. thinks something like this.

  1100. We sort of think

  1101. a little bit

  1102. as if God

1103. is going to rank people

  1104. sort of the way

  1105. he ranked stadiums.

1106. If you go to a hockey game,

1107. how the stadium is ranked.

1108. And so the rich people

  1109. can afford the seats

1110. really close to the ice.

  1111. And the poor people

  1112. get the seats

  1113. in the nosebleed section.

  1114. And so how God's

  1115. final judgment

  1116. is going to be

  1117. is that

1118. at the end of the day,

  1119. everybody's seated

  1120. in the stadium.

  1121. And the line goes

  1122. horizontally across

  1123. all human beings

  1124. and those human beings

1125. which are below this line

  1126. in the expensive seats,

  1127. the good seats,

  1128. they pass.

  1129. The people in the

  1130. not good seats,

  1131. well,

  1132. they're the ones

1133. who are going to fail.

  1134. But the Bible

  1135. says something

  1136. which is in fact

  1137. why our conscience,

  1138. only the Bible

  1139. actually explains

1140. how that type of thinking

  1141. is not accurate thinking.

  1142. It doesn't even fit

  1143. with human experience.

  1144. You see,

  1145. because the Bible

  1146. actually says

  1147. that the line

  1148. between good and evil

  1149. goes right down

  1150. every human being.

  1151. It's not

  1152. a horizontal line.

  1153. It's a vertical line.

  1154. And you see,

  1155. the Bible doesn't say

  1156. that human beings

  1157. never do anything good,

  1158. but it does say

  1159. that we can never

  1160. only do things

  1161. which are good

  1162. because there is

  1163. this line down

  1164. the center

  1165. of every human being.

1166. And so I would have

1167. to say to that person

  1168. who said to me,

  1169. you need to understand

  1170. something about Christianity.

1171. I know that in and of myself

  1172. I could never stand

  1173. before the judgment seat

  1174. of God.

  1175. And in fact,

  1176. actually,

1177. if I have ever acted

  1178. in such a way

  1179. that I

  1180. looked like I thought

  1181. that somehow

1182. just because of who I am

  1183. I would stand

  1184. before that,

  1185. I apologize to you.

  1186. Because that's not true.

1187. It goes right down me.

1188. And it goes right down you.

1189. See, the other type of thing

  1190. which makes this doctrine

  1191. a little bit hard

  1192. is that

  1193. is the whole idea

  1194. of presumption.

  1195. You see,

  1196. as the average Canadian,

  1197. even if they think

1198. about this as a topic,

1199. what they tend to think of

1200. is that it's sort of

  1201. like university students

  1202. at the beginning

  1203. of a term.

1204. And if a university student

  1205. at the beginning

  1206. of a term said,

  1207. I already know

  1208. that I got an A plus,

  1209. you'd go, what?

  1210. Like, you're still

1211. having to do the papers.

1212. You haven't done the exams.

  1213. The final mark

  1214. isn't in yet.

  1215. But once again,

1216. the fact that we are

  1217. troubled about

  1218. standing before God

1219. in fact is a hint

  1220. that what the Bible

  1221. says is true.

  1222. And the Bible says

1223. is that for every one

  1224. of you,

  1225. both in Christ

  1226. and out of Christ,

  1227. the final mark

  1228. has already been given.

1229. Paul says to the church

  1230. in Rome,

  1231. for all have sinned

  1232. and fall short

1233. of the glory of God.

  1234. The final mark

  1235. has been given.

1236. My hope of not failing

  1237. is not based

  1238. on my performance.

1239. See, what is the biblical...

  1240. The biblical hope

  1241. is this.

  1242. That unworthy

  1243. and as undeserving

  1244. that I am.

  1245. I don't know

  1246. who first said this,

  1247. but somebody said

  1248. that mercy

  1249. is not getting

  1250. what you deserve.

1251. So, you get shown mercy

  1252. when you deserve something,

  1253. but you don't get

  1254. what you deserve.

  1255. But grace

  1256. is even greater.

  1257. It tops up mercy.

  1258. You get

  1259. what you don't deserve.

  1260. You get

  1261. what you don't deserve.

  1262. And my only hope

  1263. in life and death

1264. is that I have one

  1265. who's taken my place

1266. and died in my place,

  1267. who lived the life

  1268. that I should live,

1269. but wasn't able to live,

  1270. who died the death

  1271. that I deserve,

  1272. but he taps me

  1273. on the shoulder.

  1274. And if you're here

  1275. outside of Christ

  1276. and if you have

  1277. a visual imagination,

  1278. as you hear me,

  1279. I am now speaking

  1280. as his ambassador,

  1281. his representative,

1282. and I want to tell you

1283. that he is tapping you

  1284. on the shoulder

  1285. right now

  1286. and saying,

  1287. Bob, Sue,

  1288. I'm willing

  1289. to take your place.

1290. let me stand for you.

1291. I will take the doom

  1292. that you deserve

1293. and I will offer you

  1294. the destiny

  1295. that I deserve.

1296. And I will do it

  1297. because I love you.

  1298. Because I love you.

1299. And you might say to God,

  1300. Jesus,

  1301. Jesus,

  1302. do you realize

  1303. what I've done?

  1304. Do you realize

  1305. how terrible

  1306. a person I am?

  1307. I don't want to say

  1308. this to other people.

  1309. To other people,

  1310. I say that I'm a good person,

  1311. but do you realize

  1312. in my heart

  1313. I know that I have done

  1314. horrendous things?

  1315. Do you realize

  1316. that I have a conscience

  1317. that screams at me

  1318. every night

1319. so that I cannot sleep?

  1320. Sometimes I can hardly

  1321. hear you

  1322. because my conscience

  1323. is screaming at me

  1324. so loud.

  1325. Do you realize

  1326. what I have done?

  1327. Do you realize

1328. what I have failed to do?

1329. And I can only speak now

1330. as the herald of Christ

  1331. and say that Christ

  1332. will say to you

  1333. as he taps you

  1334. on the shoulder,

  1335. yes,

  1336. I know.

  1337. Yes,

  1338. I know.

  1339. And he'll show you

  1340. his hands

  1341. with the nail print

1342. and maybe he'll show you

  1343. the side

1344. where the spear went in

  1345. and he say,

1346. I did these for you.

1347. I will take your place

1348. if you will but let me.

1349. If you will but let me.

  1350. You see,

  1351. the thing is about

  1352. the whole story

  1353. of Christianity

1354. is it fits this riddle

  1355. of our existence

  1356. that on one hand,

  1357. yeah,

  1358. that God himself

  1359. who sees all things

  1360. that only he

  1361. can truly forgive

  1362. and it's not just

  1363. a matter of forgiveness

  1364. of the bad things

  1365. having been dealt with

  1366. in Christ

1367. as he takes our place,

  1368. but it's also a matter

  1369. of him clothing us

  1370. with his accomplishment.

  1371. Paul might have had

1372. in the back of his mind

1373. is one of those times

  1374. when he spoke

  1375. to Felix.

  1376. Felix,

  1377. I'm sorry I didn't have it

1378. put up on the screen,

1379. but if you have your Bibles,

  1380. it's a very famous text.

  1381. It's Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

1382. I'll just read part of it.

  1383. It's verses 1 to 6.

  1384. Who has believed

1385. what he has heard from us

  1386. and to whom

1387. has the arm of the Lord

  1388. been revealed?

  1389. This is a prophecy

  1390. 600 years before Christ

  1391. and Isaiah prophetically saying

  1392. for Jesus,

1393. for he grew up before him

  1394. like a young plant

  1395. and like a root

  1396. out of dry ground.

  1397. Speaking of Jesus,

1398. he had no former majesty

1399. that we should look at him

  1400. and no beauty,

  1401. humanly speaking,

1402. that we should desire him.

  1403. Jesus was a nobody

  1404. from Nazareth,

  1405. which is nowhereville.

  1406. And Jesus was despised

1407. and rejected by human beings.

1408. He was a man of sorrows

  1409. and acquainted with grief.

1410. He would have buried his father.

  1411. And in those days,

1412. who knows how many brothers

1413. or sisters that Mary bore

  1414. that died in childhood

1415. that Jesus would have helped

  1416. to bury

  1417. as the oldest son.

  1418. He was despised

  1419. and rejected by men,

  1420. a man of sorrows

  1421. and acquainted with grief.

  1422. And as one

1423. from whom men hide their faces,

  1424. that's what they did

  1425. on the cross,

  1426. he was despised

1427. and we esteemed him not.

1428. Surely he has borne our griefs

  1429. and carried our sorrows.

1430. yet we esteemed him stricken,

1431. smitten by God and afflicted.

  1432. But he was wounded

  1433. for our transgressions.

1434. He was crushed for our iniquities.

1435. Upon him was the chastisement

  1436. that brought us peace.

  1437. And with his stripes,

  1438. we are healed.

  1439. You are healed.

1440. If you put your faith in him,

  1441. you are healed.

1442. All like sheep have gone astray.

1443. We have turned everyone to his own way.

1444. And the Lord has laid on him

1445. the iniquity of us all.

  1446. Brothers and sisters,

1447. this is the Christian hope.

  1448. You will appear

1449. before the judgment seat of God.

1450. There is no hope other than this.

1451. There is no moral universe

  1452. without a last judgment.

  1453. There is no explanation

  1454. of your conscience

1455. unless it is part of God's good gift

1456. to call you to himself.

1457. And there is no savior

  1458. and no salvation

1459. other than him taking your place

  1460. there is none.

1461. But he offers it for you.

1462. There is no sin so bad

1463. that he did not die to cover it.

  1464. None.

  1465. And that is why

  1466. it is the beginning

1467. of the quietening of our conscience

  1468. to know this.

1469. A couple of things in closing.

  1470. If you struggle

  1471. with a conscience

  1472. that screams at you,

1473. there is the body of Christ

1474. who can pray for you.

  1475. Share that burden

1476. and ask people to pray for you.

  1477. Sometimes this problem

1478. is a truly spiritual problem.

  1479. there is a devil.

  1480. There is a devil.

1481. And one of the names

  1482. of the devil

1483. and all of the evil spirits

  1484. is the accuser.

  1485. The accuser.

  1486. Once again,

1487. you have your own authority.

  1488. You can say,

1489. in the name of Jesus,

  1490. evil spirit,

  1491. be gone from me.

1492. In the name of Jesus,

  1493. be silenced.

1494. In the name of Jesus,

  1495. don't speak.

1496. And if that does not help,

1497. you have brothers and sisters

  1498. in Christ

1499. who can pray for you.

  1500. There is freedom.

1501. And a third thing you can do

  1502. is to meditate upon

1503. the finished work of Christ.

  1504. Meditate upon texts

  1505. like Romans 8.

1506. There is no condemnation now

1507. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  1508. Meditate upon the end

  1509. of Romans 8.

  1510. Will this separate me

1511. from the love of God

1512. or this or this or this or this?

  1513. No, nothing will.

  1514. Meditate upon it.

1515. Claim that as your promise.

  1516. Ask people to pray

1517. that you will take that heart

1518. as it brings the gospel home to you.

1519. What Christ has done for you.

  1520. And a fourth thing

  1521. that you can do

  1522. is very,

1523. it's a thing we can do today.

  1524. It's the wonderful thing

  1525. about celebrating

  1526. the Lord's Supper.

  1527. The Lord's Supper

1528. is a reminder to us

  1529. of what Jesus did

1530. for us on the cross.

1531. And that when we put

1532. our faith and trust in Him,

  1533. it's like you enter

1534. into a new covenant with Him,

1535. one where He will never let you go.

  1536. And it's not,

1537. I'm not going to get up

  1538. and say,

  1539. by the way,

  1540. only the people

  1541. in the expensive seats

  1542. can come forward

  1543. for communion.

  1544. All you losers

  1545. in the nosebleed section,

1546. you have to stay back.

  1547. I don't say,

  1548. by the way,

  1549. all of you really,

  1550. you know,

  1551. scummy people

  1552. who haven't had

  1553. a very good week,

1554. like you have to stay

  1555. in your seats.

  1556. No.

  1557. The Lord's Supper

  1558. is this visual reminder

1559. of what Christ has done

1560. for us on the cross.

  1561. It's an opportunity

1562. for us to reflect again

  1563. upon what the gospel

  1564. has accomplished for you.

1565. And it is an invitation

1566. for you to come and say,

  1567. you know what,

  1568. that person probably

1569. isn't any better than me

  1570. and they're receiving communion

  1571. and that person

1572. isn't any better than me

1573. and George isn't any better than me

1574. and they're all receiving communion.

  1575. And Jesus is,

1576. George is being Christ's herald

  1577. and say,

  1578. come.

  1579. And I will come

1580. and I will feed on Christ.

  1581. And it reminds me

  1582. that it's,

1583. his blood has covered me

  1584. and entered me.

1585. His body has entered me.

1586. I can feed on him spiritually

  1587. and I can remember

  1588. with the invitation

1589. that the words of the accuser

  1590. is wrong.

  1591. That Christ welcomes me.

1592. One final piece of advice.

  1593. I mean,

  1594. you know,

1595. part of the whole problem

  1596. with accusing conscience

1597. is we can't go back

1598. in time to fix things.

1599. And one of the things,

1600. upon all those other four things

  1601. which I've told you

1602. is that one of the things

1603. that we can just do

  1604. is pray.

1605. If there's some other thing

  1606. of amendment of life

  1607. that we can do,

  1608. then the Holy Spirit

1609. should lead you into it.

  1610. You see,

  1611. the wonderful thing

  1612. about the gospel

1613. is that once it becomes

1614. more real to your heart,

1615. it doesn't become an excuse

1616. for you to do more

  1617. bad things.

  1618. It becomes a secure,

  1619. emotional,

  1620. and intellectual place

  1621. to stand

  1622. where you can ask

  1623. the Holy Spirit,

  1624. you can ask Christ

1625. to make clear to you

  1626. what you did

1627. and what you did not do wrong

1628. and ask for his help

  1629. to make things right

1630. and to walk towards it.

  1631. And if there's nothing

  1632. you can do,

  1633. well then,

1634. just to at least pray

  1635. into the situation.

  1636. You see,

1637. the gospel doesn't give you

  1638. a license to sin.

  1639. It provides this strong

  1640. emotional and intellectual place

  1641. and communal place

1642. because we are a congregation

  1643. of the cross

  1644. to support each other.

  1645. So sinners,

  1646. if you're in Christ,

  1647. you are redeemed.

1648. And when it comes time

  1649. for communion,

  1650. come on up

  1651. and remember Christ.

1652. I invite you to stand.

  1653. Let's pray.

  1654. Father,

1655. your Son is a wonderful

  1656. and beautiful Savior.

  1657. We give you thanks

  1658. and praise

  1659. that though evil

  1660. runs through the center

1661. of every single human being

  1662. and will be there

  1663. to some extent

  1664. until we see you

  1665. face to face

  1666. and are glorified

  1667. to be like Christ

  1668. and to see you

  1669. face to face

  1670. unashamed,

  1671. basking in your beauty,

1672. the beauty of your smile

  1673. and of your goodness

  1674. and of your love

  1675. and beauty

  1676. and all of that,

  1677. Father.

  1678. We give you thanks

  1679. and praise

  1680. that your Son

  1681. died to save us,

  1682. that he died

  1683. to take away

  1684. that sin

  1685. and that shame

  1686. that he dealt

1687. with it on the cross

1688. and that he clothes us

1689. when we put our faith

  1690. and trust in him,

  1691. that not just him,

1692. he doesn't just take away

  1693. the sin

  1694. and the punishment

  1695. our sin deserves,

1696. but that he clothes us

  1697. in his righteousness,

  1698. he clothes us

  1699. in his beauty,

  1700. he clothes us

  1701. in his goodness

1702. and that he calls us

1703. to be part of his people

  1704. in a covenant

  1705. with him forever.

  1706. Father,

  1707. we are not worthy

  1708. of anything like this.

  1709. We are dependent

  1710. completely upon

  1711. your goodness,

  1712. completely dependent

  1713. upon your goodness

  1714. and we ask,

  1715. we are so thankful,

  1716. Father,

  1717. that you do not

  1718. have us walk alone

1719. but that we can be part

  1720. of a community

  1721. centered around the cross

  1722. in Christ

1723. and that week by week

  1724. we are invited

  1725. to remember

  1726. what he did

1727. for us on the cross.

  1728. We are reminded

  1729. to meet other people

  1730. that we can ask

  1731. to pray for us

  1732. and we can come

  1733. and receive

  1734. and feed spiritually

  1735. upon Christ

  1736. Sunday after Sunday.

  1737. Father,

  1738. we thank you

  1739. for the grace

  1740. in Christ

  1741. and the means

  1742. of grace

  1743. in Sunday services

  1744. and Holy Communion

  1745. and we ask,

  1746. that you bring

  1747. the gospel home

  1748. more and more deeply

  1749. to us

  1750. so that,

  1751. Father,

  1752. out of that,

  1753. out of that,

  1754. we might deal

  1755. with the crap

  1756. in our lives

  1757. knowing what

  1758. the final judgment

  1759. is.

  1760. And we ask all

  1761. these things

  1762. in the name

  1763. of Jesus,

  1764. your Son

  1765. and our Savior

  1766. and all God's

  1767. people said,

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Amen.
