  1. We're going to read from Luke chapter 2, verses 1 to 14.

    Luke 2:1–14

  2. So we read this passage last week as well, but we focused on a different section,

  3. and tonight we'll focus on the very end of the section where the angels sing what's typically called the Gloria.

  4. This is the Word of God.

  5. In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

  6. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria,

  7. and all went to be registered, each to his own town.

  8. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David,

  9. which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,

  10. to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

  11. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth,

  12. and she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling cloths,

  13. and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

  14. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field,

  15. keeping watch over their flocks by night.

  16. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

  17. and they were filled with great fear.

  18. And the angel said to them,

  19. Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy,

  20. that will be for all the people.

  21. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  22. And this will be a sign for you.

  23. You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths, and lying in a manger.

  24. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,

  25. praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest,

  26. and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  27. This is God's holy word.

  28. I was traveling to church this evening, and the radio was on,

  29. and Alison reminded me of how it was on the old days

  30. when the number one single was revealed on Christmas Day,

  31. Christmas Day Top of the Pops.

  32. I don't think any of that happens any longer,

  33. but often the musical number one,

  34. the musical offering at this time of year would be Christmas themed.

  35. Do they know it's Christmas?

  36. Last Christmas.

  37. Lonely this Christmas.

  38. Mistletoe and wine.

  39. To name but a few, and you'll be glad to know

  40. I'm not going to embark on a rendition of any of these items.

  41. Instead, what I want to do is for us to look together

  42. at a very different Christmas song.

  43. Indeed, the first ever song released, if I can put it that way,

  44. and sung on that first ever Christmas Day.

  45. And we find it here in Luke's Gospel, chapter 2 and verse 14.

  46. A song sung, perhaps even shouted or chanted,

  47. by a multitude of the heavenly host.

  48. Glory to God in the highest,

  49. and on earth peace among those with whom He is well pleased.

  50. The song of this text is often better known simply as the Gloria,

  51. Gloria in excelsis, in excelsis Deo,

  52. glory to God in the highest.

  53. In some churches, it is sung every Sunday.

  54. And over the years, great musicians,

  55. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Vivaldi,

  56. have written arias and oratorios based on this particular text.

  57. And it's a text that announces the great turning point in human history.

  58. God Himself, the Creator, breaking into our world

  59. and taking to Himself our flesh and blood.

  60. According to the Bible, here is the great eternal plan and purpose of God coming together.

  61. Here is the fulfillment of God's ancient promises to His people,

  62. focused on a little baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

  63. No wonder a multitude of the heavenly host,

  64. literally a great army of heaven,

  65. burst into this song of praise.

  66. It's hardly, I suppose, a silent night.

  67. They cry out, they declare glory to God in the highest.

  68. Their desire that all of creation should rise up

  69. and praise this wonderful God.

  70. And their song essentially is a kind of commentary

  71. on what God is doing in sending His only begotten Son into the world.

  72. A song of praise to God about the Lord Jesus Christ

  73. and about the significance of His coming.

  74. And it's a song that I want to suggest to you tonight.

  75. It sounds out three distinctive notes about God

  76. and about what the birth of this child will mean.

  77. And the first note that I want you to see with me is this.

  78. The first note is a note of divine glory.

  79. Glory to God in the highest.

  80. The coming of Jesus is first and foremost designed to reveal and to bring glory to God.

  81. According to the Bible, this is what God Himself, in a sense, is all about.

  82. He is a God jealous for His own glory.

  83. After each musical composition,

  84. Johann Sebastian Bach would write that great Reformation slogan, SDG,

  85. Soli Deo Gloria.

  86. To God alone be the glory.

  87. And what Bach understood, perhaps better than most,

  88. was that this is the great mission statement of heaven.

  89. This is what God has written over the universe and over the world that He has created.

  90. Soli Deo Gloria.

  91. Here is God's great overarching purpose in all that He does.

  92. I recently bought a copy of Herman Bavinck's book on Christian doctrine,

  93. entitled The Wonderful Works of God.

  94. It's beautifully rich, devotional, systematic theology.

  95. The first sentence of the book is,

  96. God and God alone is man's highest good.

  97. And the concluding sentence of the book is a quote from the Apostle Paul.

  98. For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things.

  99. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

  100. Bavinck's literary envelope follows Calvin

  101. in underscoring the aim and goal of all Christian theology

  102. as being the glory of God.

  103. Glory to God in the highest.

  104. Therefore, the first note of the Gloria is about God, not about us.

  105. The angels do not begin with our felt needs,

  106. our psychological wounds,

  107. our existential loneliness.

  108. They begin with the glory of God.

  109. And that is always the biblical order.

  110. Man's chief end is to glorify God.

  111. And only then, in the light of that glory,

  112. to enjoy Him forever.

  113. It seems to me that much modern theology and indeed preaching

  114. has kind of reversed this order.

  115. Begins with humanity and its problems.

  116. And then, you know, if there's time,

  117. we might squeeze in a word or a thought about God.

  118. But the angels of heaven know better.

  119. They know that the highest thing that can be said on earth

  120. is something about the God of highest heaven.

  121. This God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  122. The Father eternally loving the Son,

  123. pouring out the Spirit upon Him.

  124. God of eternal glory, giving out love and light.

  125. And that's why in the Bible,

  126. so often God's glory is likened to light

  127. shining and radiating out.

  128. And we see it here in this text,

  129. in this passage in Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  130. The shepherds out in the field,

  131. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  132. An angel of the Lord appeared to them,

  133. and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  134. We have that in the Old Testament in Isaiah 60.

  135. Arise, shine, for your light has come,

  136. and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

  137. Behold, darkness shall cover the earth,

  138. thick darkness the peoples,

  139. but the Lord will arise upon you,

  140. and His glory will be seen upon you.

  141. And the nations shall come to your light

  142. as kings to the brightness of your rising.

  143. And if we turn to the very final book of the Bible,

  144. Revelation, Revelation 21.

  145. I saw no temple in the city,

  146. for its temple is the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb,

  147. and the city has no need of sun or moon to shine upon it,

  148. for the glory of God gives it light.

  149. And its lamp is the Lamb.

  150. By its light will the nations walk.

  151. The kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.

  152. The gates will never shut by day,

  153. and there will be no night there.

  154. His glory is the shining forth of all that God is.

  155. The effulgence of His holiness,

  156. the radiance of His majesty,

  157. the splendor of His perfections being made public.

  158. And here the angels announce

  159. that the glory has now,

  160. in the birth of this child,

  161. broken out in a new and quite astonishing way.

  162. The Word has become flesh.

  163. The eternal Son has taken our nature.

  164. And so, at the birth of Jesus Christ,

  165. we have this outshining radiance of God's glory.

  166. Here is a God eternally full of light and love,

  167. and whose glory is spilling out into the world

  168. in the person of His eternally beloved Son.

  169. In the Old Testament, that word for glory

  170. comes from a Hebrew word suggesting weight

  171. and substance and importance.

  172. The very antithesis of something light

  173. and inconsequential.

  174. When the Bible speaks of the glory of God,

  175. it speaks of His infinite worth,

  176. His radiant honor,

  177. His eternal greatness.

  178. And indeed, that's why sometimes in the Bible,

  179. in Scripture, God is referred to simply as the glory.

  180. And God's great goal or aim in all things

  181. is to display His glory.

  182. He is God in the highest.

  183. There is none above Him or beyond Him.

  184. He glories in His own name.

  185. He delights in Himself.

  186. He stands supreme at the center of His own affections,

  187. a self-sufficient, inexhaustible fountain of grace.

  188. He delights in His own glory as Father, Son, and Spirit,

  189. and He opposes everything that would seek to belittle

  190. or diminish that glory.

  191. Indeed, the very essence of human sin

  192. is in robbing Him of the glory that is rightfully His.

  193. Instead of Him occupying the central place in our lives

  194. and in our thinking and in our worship,

  195. He has since the fall been relegated,

  196. dethroned, marginalized.

  197. And so, as human beings,

  198. we no longer bask in the light of God's glory.

  199. We much prefer to hide away in the darkness.

  200. We put other people, we put ourselves,

  201. other things at the center of our lives.

  202. Everything and anything but our Creator.

  203. Paul writes of this in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  204. when he says,

  205. He goes on,

  206. So when the Christmas angels sing,

  207. they sing first and foremost about God's glory.

  208. Jesus has come.

  209. He's a man on a mission

  210. to reveal the glory of God,

  211. to restore God's glory in our lives.

  212. He has come to put right

  213. what has gone horribly wrong.

  214. He has come to prepare honor and glory for Himself

  215. through His people.

  216. God is glorified in becoming one of us.

  217. And in going to the cross

  218. to bear the curse

  219. and in being raised up to newness of life,

  220. Jesus Christ has come to usher in

  221. a glorious new creation.

  222. No wonder this great multitude

  223. of the heavenly host break into song.

  224. And that's the first note of the Gloria.

  225. God's glory.

  226. A note of divine glory.

  227. And that brings us to the second note.

  228. Because if God is going to restore His glory,

  229. how will He accomplish this?

  230. Well, He will do so

  231. by bringing peace.

  232. That's the second note in the Gloria.

  233. A note of divine glory.

  234. And then a note of divine peace.

  235. And on earth, peace.

  236. Peace on the earth,

  237. not peace from the earth.

  238. Here is the peace that only God Himself

  239. can bring to us.

  240. And the peace that's spoken of here

  241. is not, I think,

  242. some kind of vague,

  243. wistful, sentimental kind of thing

  244. that people often mention

  245. at this time of year.

  246. The angels here are speaking about shalom.

  247. That Old Testament word

  248. that conveys wholeness

  249. and harmony and salvation

  250. and everything put right.

  251. And this peace is proclaimed

  252. on earth.

  253. This place of thorns and thistles,

  254. of sweat and blood,

  255. of idolatry and immorality,

  256. of enmity and strife

  257. and of war and conflict.

  258. It is on this earth

  259. that peace is pronounced

  260. and announced.

  261. And so the angels are speaking

  262. theologically about peace with God.

  263. For this restless, broken world

  264. is at war with God.

  265. As human beings,

  266. we have robbed Him of His glory

  267. and we're not going to give Him

  268. His rightful place in our lives.

  269. We're going to do our own thing.

  270. We're going to follow our own path.

  271. We're going to live life

  272. by our own rules.

  273. I mean, who does He think He is?

  274. And so there's conflict.

  275. Enmity between human beings and God.

  276. But it's a conflict

  277. that will not last forever.

  278. For God has promised one day

  279. to restore His glory

  280. and to banish and exclude

  281. all that is wrong and evil

  282. from His universe.

  283. And sometimes that's referred to

  284. in the Bible as the great day

  285. of the Lord,

  286. sometimes the last day.

  287. Think of Isaiah chapter 2

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  288. where He proclaims,

  289. He shall judge between the nations,

  290. shall decide disputes for many peoples,

  291. and they shall beat their swords

  292. into plowshares

  293. and their spears into pruning hooks.

  294. Nations shall not lift up sword

  295. against nation,

  296. neither shall they learn war anymore.

  297. Isaiah envisages a kind of

  298. reordering of the world,

  299. one not based on partisan loyalties

  300. and nationality,

  301. but upon the worship of the one true God.

  302. A world of shalom and harmony and peace.

  303. Conflicts resolved,

  304. wrongs righted,

  305. tears wiped from every eye.

  306. Fallible human judgment

  307. replaced with the perfection

  308. of divine judgment.

  309. The symbolism there is

  310. of a return to Eden.

  311. The curse removed,

  312. men and women at peace with God

  313. and with one another.

  314. There can be no ultimate peace

  315. and prosperity

  316. until men and women are brought

  317. under the rule of God.

  318. Only in submission to Christ

  319. is there peace.

  320. Calvin writes,

  321. Oh, that we might live

  322. under Christ's perfect rule,

  323. that we might enjoy

  324. Christ's perfect peace.

  325. One day God's peace

  326. will reign on the earth.

  327. The curse of the fall

  328. will be lifted forever.

  329. And we need to be ready

  330. for that day.

  331. How do we do that?

  332. We need to be reconciled

  333. to God now.

  334. The angels remind us here

  335. that Jesus' coming

  336. is all about bringing

  337. that reconciliation

  338. and peace with God

  339. that we so desperately need

  340. in this broken,

  341. decaying,

  342. and dying world.

  343. He brings peace

  344. on the earth.

  345. The Old Testament,

  346. of course,

  347. Jesus has given that title

  348. in Isaiah 9,

  349. isn't he?

  350. The Prince of Peace.

  351. Paul writing to the Christians

  352. in Ephesus

  353. says that

  354. Jesus himself

  355. is our peace.

  356. We sometimes

  357. sing the Christmas carol

  358. at this time of year,

  359. that famous carol

  360. of Charles Wesley's,

  361. Peace on earth

  362. and mercy mild,

  363. God and sinners

  364. reconciled.

  365. reconciled.

  366. So how does Jesus

  367. bring us

  368. peace with God?

  369. What does this

  370. little baby boy

  371. wrapped in swaddling cloths

  372. lying in a manger

  373. got to do

  374. with bringing

  375. peace on the earth?

  376. Some years ago now,

  377. I came across

  378. a newspaper article.

  379. It was about

  380. retail sales

  381. at Christmas time.

  382. And the heading

  383. was this,

  384. we won't know

  385. the results

  386. of Christmas

  387. until Easter.

  388. I remember thinking

  389. how true

  390. that is,

  391. at least from

  392. a Christian point

  393. of view.

  394. Jesus lived

  395. a life

  396. of glory

  397. to God.

  398. And at the end

  399. of that life,

  400. he tasted death

  401. and judgment

  402. on a cross.

  403. Despite living

  404. a life

  405. of loving

  406. perfection,

  407. he was

  408. rejected

  409. and despised

  410. and crucified

  411. like a common

  412. criminal.

  413. And yet,

  414. his death

  415. was not just

  416. some cruel

  417. injustice.

  418. According to

  419. Scripture,

  420. it was

  421. accomplishing

  422. something

  423. remarkable

  424. for us.

  425. For at

  426. Calvary's cross,

  427. he bore

  428. !

  429. He bore

  430. God's wrath

  431. and judgment.

  432. He stood

  433. in our

  434. place.

  435. He took

  436. our punishment

  437. and our

  438. death.

  439. It is at

  440. the cross

  441. and through

  442. Jesus'

  443. violent death

  444. and the

  445. shedding

  446. of his

  447. blood

  448. that he

  449. brings us

  450. peace with

  451. God.

  452. We,

  453. as human

  454. beings,

  455. we've

  456. exchanged

  457. God's

  458. glory

  459. for

  460. idolatry

  461. and sin.

  462. But Jesus

  463. has come

  464. to exchange

  465. his glory

  466. for our

  467. punishment

  468. and to

  469. bring us

  470. what we

  471. need most,

  472. and that

  473. is peace

  474. with God.

  475. John Stott,

  476. in his book,

  477. The Cross

  478. of Christ,

  479. writes this,

  480. The essence

  481. of sin

  482. is in man

  483. substituting

  484. himself for

  485. God.

  486. The essence

  487. of salvation

  488. is in God

  489. substituting

  490. himself for

  491. man.

  492. Sin involves

  493. man rising

  494. up against

  495. God,

  496. placing himself

  497. where only

  498. God should

  499. be.

  500. Salvation

  501. involves God

  502. sacrificing

  503. himself

  504. where only

  505. man

  506. deserve

  507. to be.

  508. Sin entails

  509. man claiming

  510. an authority

  511. which belongs

  512. to God

  513. alone.

  514. Salvation

  515. entails God

  516. accepting

  517. the judgment

  518. which belongs

  519. to man

  520. alone.

  521. The early

  522. settlers

  523. in North

  524. America

  525. often had

  526. to cope

  527. with great

  528. prairie fires

  529. that travelled

  530. often so

  531. quickly,

  532. so speedily

  533. across the

  534. land that

  535. they consumed

  536. everything that

  537. was before

  538. them.

  539. But to

  540. keep themselves

  541. safe,

  542. often the

  543. settlers

  544. would start

  545. their own

  546. fires and

  547. stand in an

  548. area that

  549. had already

  550. been burned

  551. out.

  552. They were

  553. safe there

  554. because where

  555. the fire

  556. had already

  557. burned,

  558. it would

  559. not burn

  560. again.

  561. And the

  562. Bible says

  563. that the

  564. fire of

  565. God's

  566. judgment

  567. is coming

  568. upon all

  569. and none

  570. of us can

  571. outrun it.

  572. it's

  573. unavoidable,

  574. we cannot

  575. save

  576. ourselves.

  577. But there's

  578. one place

  579. where the

  580. fire has

  581. already

  582. burned.

  583. There's

  584. one place

  585. where God's

  586. fierce

  587. judgment

  588. on sin

  589. has already

  590. exhausted

  591. itself.

  592. And that

  593. is on the

  594. cross of

  595. Christ.

  596. That is

  597. on Jesus,

  598. the Prince

  599. of Peace.

  600. because at

  601. the cross

  602. Jesus takes

  603. our punishment

  604. and our

  605. place.

  606. He becomes

  607. our shelter

  608. and our

  609. salvation

  610. and our

  611. peace.

  612. Remember the

  613. angel says

  614. to Joseph,

  615. you will

  616. give him

  617. the name

  618. Jesus,

  619. for he

  620. will save

  621. his people

  622. from their

  623. sins.

  624. There's

  625. only one

  626. way to

  627. evade and

  628. avoid the

  629. wrath and

  630. judgment of

  631. God.

  632. And that

  633. is through

  634. faith in

  635. the one

  636. who upon

  637. the cross

  638. did not

  639. escape it.

  640. It's by

  641. putting our

  642. faith in

  643. Jesus,

  644. the great

  645. peacemaker.

  646. And this

  647. is the

  648. peace of

  649. which the

  650. angels are

  651. speaking and

  652. singing on

  653. that Bethlehem

  654. hillside.

  655. A costly

  656. peace.

  657. A peace

  658. wrought in

  659. nails and

  660. sweat and

  661. blood upon

  662. a rough

  663. wooden

  664. cross.

  665. Because that

  666. is what

  667. Jesus came

  668. to do.

  669. He came

  670. to bring

  671. peace on

  672. earth.

  673. Peace to

  674. sinners and

  675. rebels like

  676. us.

  677. He came to

  678. bring us

  679. peace with

  680. God that

  681. we might

  682. enjoy as

  683. Corey was

  684. telling us

  685. this morning

  686. the peace

  687. of God.

  688. God.

  689. And the

  690. big question

  691. I suppose

  692. for us

  693. all is

  694. this.

  695. Do we

  696. have this

  697. peace with

  698. God?

  699. And if

  700. not, how

  701. can we

  702. receive it?

  703. What does

  704. it involve?

  705. Well, if our

  706. first two notes

  707. are about

  708. God's glory

  709. and God's

  710. peace,

  711. then our

  712. third and

  713. quickly,

  714. briefly,

  715. final note,

  716. third note,

  717. is, I

  718. think, a

  719. note of

  720. divine grace

  721. among those

  722. with whom

  723. he is

  724. well pleased.

  725. What does

  726. this mean?

  727. Are the

  728. angels

  729. proclaiming

  730. a kind of

  731. doctrine of

  732. works

  733. righteousness?

  734. Does it

  735. mean that

  736. only those

  737. who really

  738. try and

  739. please God

  740. can be

  741. saved?

  742. No, I

  743. don't think

  744. so.

  745. Some older

  746. translations,

  747. the authorized

  748. version,

  749. has good

  750. will toward

  751. men.

  752. Most modern

  753. translators

  754. have some

  755. variation of

  756. people he

  757. favors.

  758. And I

  759. think what

  760. the text is

  761. driving at

  762. is this,

  763. is that

  764. those who

  765. find this

  766. peace with

  767. God only

  768. find it

  769. as a

  770. gift.

  771. This peace

  772. is to be

  773. enjoyed by

  774. those in

  775. whom God

  776. delights,

  777. literally

  778. those of

  779. his good

  780. pleasure,

  781. those with

  782. whom he

  783. is well

  784. pleased,

  785. this

  786. idea,

  787. concept,

  788. found in

  789. a number

  790. of places

  791. in the

  792. New

  793. Testament.

  794. It's

  795. connected

  796. strongly with

  797. the idea

  798. of God's

  799. grace.

  800. The NIV,

  801. I think,

  802. translates it,

  803. those upon

  804. whom his

  805. favor rests.

  806. This peace

  807. is not

  808. something we

  809. can earn

  810. or do

  811. ourselves.

  812. Grace

  813. means a

  814. gift.

  815. Receiving

  816. something that

  817. is free,

  818. undeserved,

  819. gift.

  820. We don't

  821. pay for

  822. gifts.

  823. Someone

  824. else pays

  825. for gifts,

  826. we receive

  827. them.

  828. The whole

  829. point of a

  830. gift is you

  831. don't pay

  832. for it.

  833. It costs

  834. the giver

  835. everything,

  836. the recipient

  837. nothing.

  838. That gets,

  839. I think,

  840. to the heart

  841. of what we're

  842. speaking about

  843. here.

  844. Grace

  845. means receiving

  846. a gift I

  847. could in

  848. no way

  849. contribute to

  850. or qualify

  851. for.

  852. And perhaps

  853. that sounds

  854. great.

  855. Free gifts.

  856. Someone else

  857. picking up

  858. the tab.

  859. And yet

  860. as human

  861. beings,

  862. we often

  863. don't like

  864. this talk

  865. of grace

  866. and free

  867. gifts.

  868. Why?

  869. Because

  870. often we

  871. don't like

  872. charity.

  873. We're

  874. cynical and

  875. suspicious of

  876. it.

  877. There's no

  878. such thing

  879. as a free

  880. lunch,

  881. is what we

  882. say.

  883. We don't

  884. trust getting

  885. something for

  886. nothing.

  887. It seems

  888. a bit off

  889. to us.

  890. I think

  891. the story,

  892. I'm trying

  893. to remember

  894. who told

  895. it,

  896. maybe in

  897. the Christianity

  898. Explored

  899. materials,

  900. they told

  901. the story

  902. of a man

  903. who stood

  904. at a

  905. tube station

  906. somewhere in

  907. central London,

  908. tried to

  909. sell golden

  910. sovereigns at

  911. a penny

  912. each.

  913. By the

  914. end of

  915. the day,

  916. he'd

  917. hardly sold

  918. any.

  919. Why?

  920. No one

  921. believed

  922. them.

  923. We're

  924. suspicious

  925. of charity.

  926. And

  927. secondly,

  928. we don't

  929. like grace

  930. because it

  931. offends us,

  932. offends our

  933. pride.

  934. We don't

  935. want charity

  936. because we

  937. want to be

  938. independent.

  939. We want to

  940. stand on

  941. our own

  942. two feet.

  943. We want

  944. to pay

  945. our own

  946. way,

  947. want to

  948. do our

  949. own

  950. thing.

  951. We don't

  952. like being

  953. in this

  954. position of

  955. being beholding

  956. to anyone

  957. else.

  958. We don't

  959. like this

  960. feeling of

  961. indebtedness.

  962. Christmas

  963. people say,

  964. you know,

  965. I buy a

  966. few extra

  967. cards in

  968. case someone

  969. sends me

  970. one and I

  971. haven't sent

  972. one to

  973. them.

  974. We don't

  975. like to be

  976. one down,

  977. like to

  978. keep the

  979. score even,

  980. like to

  981. pay our

  982. own way,

  983. like to

  984. be in

  985. control.

  986. And yet,

  987. if we

  988. think like

  989. that,

  990. we will

  991. never find

  992. ourselves as

  993. those upon

  994. whom the

  995. favor of

  996. God rests,

  997. and we'll

  998. never find

  999. peace with

  1000. God.

  1001. None of

  1002. us can

  1003. buy or

  1004. earn our

  1005. way into

  1006. God's

  1007. favor.

  1008. There is

  1009. nothing we

  1010. can give.

  1011. We have

  1012. no leverage.

  1013. We cannot

  1014. manipulate God

  1015. to do our

  1016. bidding.

  1017. God's favor

  1018. cannot be

  1019. bought.

  1020. As human

  1021. beings, we

  1022. are completely

  1023. and utterly

  1024. dependent on

  1025. his gift of

  1026. grace that

  1027. comes to us

  1028. only through

  1029. Jesus Christ.

  1030. Charles

  1031. Spurgeon

  1032. once told

  1033. the story

  1034. of a

  1035. minister,

  1036. went to

  1037. the house

  1038. of an

  1039. elderly woman.

  1040. He had a

  1041. gift from

  1042. the church's

  1043. poor relief

  1044. fund, and

  1045. he went to

  1046. the door,

  1047. and he

  1048. knocked on

  1049. the door,

  1050. and he

  1051. knocked on

  1052. the door,

  1053. and he

  1054. knocked on

  1055. the door,

  1056. but to no

  1057. avail.

  1058. There was

  1059. no answer.

  1060. Later on,

  1061. he discovered

  1062. that the lady

  1063. in question

  1064. had been

  1065. inside.

  1066. She'd been

  1067. at home

  1068. all the

  1069. time, and

  1070. she explained

  1071. to him,

  1072. I heard the

  1073. knocking, but

  1074. I thought it

  1075. was the rent

  1076. man come to

  1077. ask me for

  1078. what I

  1079. owed.

  1080. That kind of

  1081. parable of

  1082. misunderstanding.

  1083. We know

  1084. that we are

  1085. accountable, so

  1086. when God

  1087. draws near and

  1088. speaks and

  1089. knocks on the

  1090. door of our

  1091. heart, if I

  1092. could put it

  1093. that way, we

  1094. often conclude

  1095. that he's

  1096. come like

  1097. the rent

  1098. man to

  1099. claim that

  1100. debt of

  1101. moral obligation

  1102. we owe.

  1103. Instead of

  1104. opening up

  1105. our lives

  1106. to him, we

  1107. feign deafness,

  1108. we close our

  1109. ears.

  1110. But friends,

  1111. Christmas is

  1112. all about God

  1113. coming near,

  1114. not to take,

  1115. but to give.

  1116. The triune

  1117. God of the

  1118. Bible is not

  1119. some needy

  1120. deity desperate

  1121. for our

  1122. attention.

  1123. He is the

  1124. eternal God

  1125. of radiant

  1126. glory who

  1127. delights to

  1128. pour out

  1129. his love

  1130. and light.

  1131. In Jesus,

  1132. in the

  1133. sending of

  1134. the eternally

  1135. begotten

  1136. Son, he

  1137. has come to

  1138. reveal his

  1139. glory to us.

  1140. He has come

  1141. to bring us

  1142. peace with

  1143. God.

  1144. He has come

  1145. to bestow it

  1146. upon all who

  1147. will receive

  1148. his gift of

  1149. grace.

  1150. He wants to

  1151. give you of

  1152. himself.

  1153. He wants his

  1154. favor to rest

  1155. upon you.

  1156. We sang those

  1157. words, didn't we?

  1158. Your grace

  1159. that reaches

  1160. far and

  1161. wide to

  1162. every tribe

  1163. and nation

  1164. has called

  1165. my heart to

  1166. enter in

  1167. the joy of

  1168. your salvation.

  1169. Well, the

  1170. angels have

  1171. gone back to

  1172. heaven.

  1173. The sky is

  1174. dark again.

  1175. The shepherds

  1176. return to

  1177. their flocks.

  1178. But the song

  1179. remains.

  1180. And if you

  1181. listen carefully,

  1182. you can still

  1183. hear its

  1184. distinctive

  1185. notes of

  1186. glory, of

  1187. peace, and

  1188. of grace.

  1189. It's still a

  1190. song worth

  1191. listening to

  1192. and singing.

  1193. For the song

  1194. of the angels

  1195. flows from

  1196. heaven itself.

  1197. It's not a

  1198. song of human

  1199. progress.

  1200. It's not a

  1201. song of

  1202. psychological

  1203. wholeness.

  1204. It's not a

  1205. song of some

  1206. political

  1207. utopia.

  1208. But a

  1209. song that

  1210. begins with

  1211. the glory

  1212. of God.

  1213. A song that

  1214. declares

  1215. peace on

  1216. earth.

  1217. All because

  1218. of the

  1219. grace of

  1220. God that

  1221. is in

  1222. Jesus

  1223. Christ.

  1224. Will you

  1225. join with

  1226. the angels

  1227. this evening?

  1228. Will you

  1229. give glory

  1230. to God?

  1231. Will you

  1232. enjoy peace

  1233. with God

  1234. and the

  1235. peace of

  1236. God?

  1237. Will you

  1238. rejoice in

  1239. receiving the

  1240. grace of

  1241. God as

  1242. it is

  1243. offered to

  1244. you in the

  1245. Savior,

  1246. Christ

  1247. the Lord?

  1248. Lord, we

  1249. thank you

  1250. for the

  1251. song of

  1252. the angels

  1253. and for

  1254. those notes

  1255. of glory

  1256. and peace

  1257. and grace.

  1258. Lord, may

  1259. those notes

  1260. resonate in

  1261. our own

  1262. hearts

  1263. tonight as

  1264. we receive

  1265. and trust

  1266. in Jesus

  1267. Christ, our

  1268. great Savior

  1269. and King.

  1270. Lord, bless

  1271. us with

  1272. your peace,

  1273. indeed a

  1274. peace that

  1275. passes

  1276. understanding.

  1277. May your

  1278. peace reign

  1279. and rule in

  1280. our hearts.

  1281. May we know

  1282. what it is to

  1283. be at peace

  1284. with you,

  1285. and may we

  1286. know your

  1287. peace reigning

  1288. in our

  1289. lives.

  1290. May we

  1291. live to

  1292. give you

  1293. glory,

  1294. and may

  1295. we rejoice

  1296. always in

  1297. your astounding

  1298. and amazing

  1299. grace.

  1300. We pray this

  1301. in Jesus'

  1302. name.

  1303. Amen.

  1304. Amen.
