  1. Our scripture reading this morning is taken from Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  2. ! Don't have any announcements or notices this morning, just to say that we gather on Sunday morning

  3. ! at half past 10 for morning worship, no evening service this week at St. Columbus.

  4. Our reading, Hebrews 13. We're going to read the whole of the chapter. Well, really the first 21 verses of the chapter.

  5. And our focus will be on verses 20 and 21. So, I'm not going to treat the whole of Hebrews 13 this morning.

  6. You'll be glad to know. But let's read that passage together. Hebrews 13 from verse 1.

  7. The writer says this,

  8. Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,

  9. for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison,

  10. as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.

  11. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled,

  12. for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.

  13. Keep your life free from the love of money. Be content with what you have. For he has said,

  14. I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say,

  15. The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?

  16. Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the Word of God.

  17. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

  18. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

  19. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be

  20. strengthened by grace, not by foods which have not benefited those devoted to them.

  21. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.

  22. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest

  23. as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp.

  24. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood.

  25. Therefore, let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured.

  26. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.

  27. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God.

  28. That is the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

  29. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

  30. Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls,

  31. as those who will have to give an account.

  32. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

  33. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things.

  34. I urge you the more earnestly to do this, in order that I may be restored to you the sooner.

  35. Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep,

  36. by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will,

  37. working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

  38. Well, I'd like to begin this new year with a benediction.

  39. Normally, of course, when we think of a benediction, we think of it coming at the end of a worship service.

  40. The Westminster Directory of Public Worship says this,

  41. let the minister dismiss the congregation with a solemn blessing.

  42. And that is, in effect, what a benediction is.

  43. Yes, the benediction at the close of worship is not just a kind of thoughtless add-on to signal the end of the service,

  44. that it's time for a coffee and a ginger snap or a time for us to go home.

  45. It's really a powerful statement or declaration of blessing upon the people of God.

  46. It's the announcement of the blessing of God on the people of God from the Word of God.

  47. And here in these closing verses of the letter to the Hebrews, we discover a magnificent benediction of God,

  48. pronounced over the people of God by the writer.

  49. May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,

  50. the great shepherd of the sheep by the blood of the eternal covenant,

  51. equip you with everything good that you may do his will,

  52. working in us that which is pleasing in his sight,

  53. through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

  54. And I think those words seem appropriate for us to consider on a day like today,

  55. as we stand on the threshold of a new year.

  56. They are designed to get us to lift our eyes to our great and sovereign Lord.

  57. A reminder that he is the one who is the source of all blessing.

  58. And he is the one who is promised to lead, guide, and protect his people.

  59. The letter to the Hebrews is really, I'm going to try and sum it up in just about two or three words,

  60. an exposition or revelation of Jesus Christ and all the glory of his person and work.

  61. If we were to sum up the burden of this great letter, it would be this.

  62. If you really know the wonder and glory of Jesus, you will never want to leave him.

  63. No matter how difficult and how challenging things may be,

  64. you will never want to be disloyal to this great and wonderful Savior.

  65. And so here at the close of the letter, the writer prays and asks for God to continue to bless and equip his people

  66. that they might persevere in the way of faith and bring glory to God.

  67. And that, I think, is precisely what we need as we look forward into a new year.

  68. We all stand in need of God's help and presence to carry us forward in faith.

  69. Without his benediction upon our lives and left to ourselves, to our own devices,

  70. we are doomed only to fail.

  71. And you'll notice here how the writer roots his request in the character of God.

  72. Now may, he says, the God of peace.

  73. That's the title he uses here.

  74. It's an important, significant way of speaking about God.

  75. We find that used elsewhere in the New Testament.

  76. Paul, for example, uses it in Romans.

  77. Romans 15, 33, he says,

  78. Now may the God of peace be with you all.

  79. And in chapter 16, verse 20,

  80. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

  81. He tells the Philippians 4, 9,

  82. The God of peace will be with you.

  83. And over the season of Advent here at St. Columbus,

  84. we've been thinking a little bit about what it means to have peace with God

  85. and to enjoy the peace of God.

  86. Because God is the one who gives or brings peace.

  87. He bestows peace upon our troubled and disordered hearts.

  88. He is the great peacemaker.

  89. And the message of the gospel itself is one of reconciliation and peace.

  90. We live in a world that does not know peace.

  91. We live in a fractured world.

  92. Discord, disharmony, broken relationships.

  93. A world often enmeshed in hostility and all manner of conflict.

  94. We have no peace among the nations.

  95. No peace between peoples.

  96. No peace in many communities.

  97. No peace sometimes in our families.

  98. No peace sometimes even in our own hearts and in our own lives.

  99. And so the writer here wants us to look away from ourselves

  100. and to the only one in whom real peace can be found.

  101. The only one who can bring us peace.

  102. The only one who can establish that peace that passes all understanding.

  103. So notice with me briefly this morning

  104. what this benediction tells us about the God of peace.

  105. Let me highlight three things from our text.

  106. The first is this.

  107. He is mighty to save.

  108. He is mighty to save.

  109. Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,

  110. the great shepherd of the sheep,

  111. by the blood of the eternal covenant.

  112. One of the features of this letter, Hebrews,

  113. is the way in which it frequently references the exodus

  114. and the journey taken by God's people out of Egypt

  115. towards the promised land under the leadership of Moses.

  116. And if you recall, that was not a trouble-free journey.

  117. People were often tempted to go back to Egypt,

  118. to the slavery of their former way of life.

  119. But nonetheless, Moses led them as God's appointed shepherd.

  120. He renounced Egypt.

  121. He looked to the future with God.

  122. He considered, the writer of the Hebrew says,

  123. the reproach of Christ, greater wealth than all the treasures of Egypt,

  124. for he was looking to the rewards.

  125. And so, likewise, these Hebrew Christians were tempted,

  126. being tempted to go back,

  127. back to a former way of life, back to slavery,

  128. back to Judaism, back to Egypt.

  129. And we too may know something of that same pressure in our own day

  130. and to, you know, that pressure to return to old patterns of living,

  131. living or to the ways of this world.

  132. But to press on in the way of faith,

  133. to make progress in the Christian life,

  134. these Hebrew Christians needed to have their eyes fixed,

  135. not upon Moses, but upon Jesus.

  136. Because he is the shepherd that they needed to look to and follow.

  137. They are to look to Jesus, the author and finisher of faith.

  138. They look to Jesus, who's bringing many sons to glory.

  139. And look what the writer says here about Jesus, our mighty Savior.

  140. He's the risen Lord, he says.

  141. He led out from the dead our Lord Jesus.

  142. By virtue of his resurrection,

  143. he has sucked the fear and the terror out of death.

  144. He's conquered death and drawn its sting.

  145. Jesus has been led out from the realm of the dead.

  146. And it's no surprise that the resurrection of Jesus

  147. has lain at the very heart of the Christian message

  148. from the earliest days.

  149. And there's much in this life that we can evade and avoid,

  150. but we cannot evade and avoid death.

  151. We can't outrun it, we cannot defeat it.

  152. But the good news is this.

  153. The God of peace has led out our Lord Jesus from death.

  154. He has triumphed over death.

  155. He is its victor, its conqueror, its king.

  156. And because Jesus has been raised,

  157. so then all those joined to him by faith

  158. will also be raised up.

  159. As he has been led out from death,

  160. so we who are joined to him will also be led out.

  161. Robert Murray McShane

  162. saw the peace of God in his dying brother's face,

  163. and that led him to seek Christ.

  164. He marked each and every anniversary of his brother's death.

  165. And 11 years later, he wrote this.

  166. This day, 11 years ago,

  167. I lost my loved and loving brother

  168. and began to seek a brother who cannot die.

  169. And that is what we have in Jesus Christ.

  170. We have a brother who cannot die.

  171. A brother through whom and in whom we too shall not die.

  172. Because Jesus Christ sets his people free

  173. from that fear of death

  174. that so profoundly grips the hearts of men and women.

  175. He's the risen Lord.

  176. Secondly, he's the great shepherd of the sheep.

  177. It's a tender imagery here.

  178. He's not just the good shepherd

  179. who lays down his life for his sheep.

  180. He's the great shepherd who is always with his flock.

  181. He's the shepherd who leads and guides his people

  182. through all the varied topography of life.

  183. With us in the green pastures,

  184. beside the still waters,

  185. in the dark valleys.

  186. He's with us when we're besieged by enemies.

  187. His mercy and steadfast love

  188. are with us all the days of our lives.

  189. Because Jesus Christ is a great shepherd.

  190. He's not a weakling.

  191. His muscles are flexed.

  192. He's ready to defend his flock.

  193. No one, says the apostle John,

  194. can snatch his sheep out of his hand.

  195. The shepherd does not carry a club for nothing.

  196. He's able to deal with all that the valley

  197. may throw at us.

  198. He can handle anything.

  199. There's an old hymn that puts it like this.

  200. I was lost, but Jesus found me,

  201. found the sheep that went astray,

  202. threw his loving arms around me,

  203. drew me back into his way.

  204. Days of darkness still come over me.

  205. Sorrows path I often tread,

  206. but his presence still is with me.

  207. By his guiding hand I'm led.

  208. He's the great shepherd.

  209. He's the risen Lord.

  210. And he's also the sacrifice who saves.

  211. His is the blood,

  212. says the writer here,

  213. of the eternal covenant.

  214. So one place in the letter

  215. where the covenant is described as eternal.

  216. There is no possibility of this covenant

  217. being superseded,

  218. becoming obsolete.

  219. It is a forever covenant.

  220. We know that the sacrificial system

  221. of the Old Testament,

  222. the old Mosaic covenant,

  223. perpetual round of activity,

  224. offering of sacrifices went on and on and on.

  225. The ritual,

  226. the ceremony never ceased.

  227. The atonement they symbolized,

  228. never complete,

  229. never finished.

  230. The high priest always on his feet.

  231. Sin never decisively dealt with.

  232. But now you see the blood

  233. of the eternal covenant has been shed.

  234. Jesus has accomplished

  235. by sacrificing himself

  236. on the altar of Calvary.

  237. And that is why he sits down,

  238. has sat down at the right hand of God.

  239. That's language indicating

  240. that his work is finished.

  241. It's complete.

  242. He's done it all.

  243. Sometimes Christians are full of anxieties

  244. that besiege by doubts and fears.

  245. Have I done enough?

  246. Am I good enough?

  247. Am I holy enough?

  248. Am I moral enough?

  249. Often weighed down

  250. by feelings of sin and guilt.

  251. Friends, we need to be reminded

  252. at the beginning of this new year

  253. that the gospel tells us

  254. that all our sin and guilt

  255. has been taken care of

  256. by Jesus Christ.

  257. It has been atoned for

  258. by the blood

  259. of the eternal covenant.

  260. He has wrought for us

  261. a peace with God

  262. that can never be taken from us.

  263. And isn't that good news?

  264. On this first day of a new year,

  265. it isn't good to be reminded

  266. of this wonderful truth.

  267. If you're a Christian believer

  268. this morning,

  269. then God is reminding you

  270. that your guilt

  271. has all been paid for

  272. completely and comprehensively.

  273. In Jesus Christ,

  274. in our mighty Savior,

  275. in that fountain

  276. filled with blood,

  277. we lose all,

  278. not just some,

  279. all our guilty stains.

  280. He is mighty to save.

  281. Secondly,

  282. He's ready to equip.

  283. May the God of peace

  284. equip you

  285. with everything good

  286. that you may do His will,

  287. working in us

  288. that which is pleasing

  289. in His sight

  290. through Jesus Christ.

  291. not only

  292. is He the God

  293. who redeems His people,

  294. He's also the God

  295. who resources His people.

  296. And the power of God

  297. revealed in His mighty acts

  298. of salvation

  299. is the same power

  300. that is at work within us.

  301. He supplies and equips

  302. all that we need

  303. for this journey of faith.

  304. He provides us

  305. with everything good

  306. that we may do His will.

  307. And you'll notice there,

  308. it matters here,

  309. what matters here

  310. is that we do the will of God.

  311. Not enough just to know it,

  312. we must do it.

  313. Now, what is the will of God?

  314. Well, in the context

  315. of this letter,

  316. God's will for His people

  317. is that they cling

  318. by faith to Jesus

  319. and never give Him up.

  320. No matter the opposition,

  321. no matter the trials,

  322. no matter the pressure,

  323. they are to continue

  324. to have their eyes

  325. fixed on Jesus.

  326. He doesn't want them

  327. to be ashamed

  328. and to walk away

  329. from the Lord.

  330. It's God's will

  331. that they endure

  332. and persevere

  333. in the way of faith.

  334. Earlier on in the letter,

  335. chapter 10, verse 36,

  336. he says this,

  337. For you have need

  338. of endurance

  339. so that when you have

  340. done the will of God,

  341. you may receive

  342. what is promised.

  343. God's will

  344. is that they continue

  345. in faithful obedience

  346. to Jesus Christ.

  347. And that's God's will

  348. for our lives also.

  349. This is God's will

  350. for you in 2026.

  351. And doing the will

  352. of God means

  353. living for Jesus,

  354. come what may.

  355. Living for Him

  356. maybe when nobody

  357. else is looking.

  358. Living for Him

  359. when things are tough.

  360. Living for Him

  361. when nobody around us

  362. is interested.

  363. Living for Him

  364. when we're tempted

  365. to throw in the towel.

  366. In the army,

  367. when soldiers are sent

  368. on a particular

  369. mission or exercise,

  370. they might be sent

  371. to the quartermaster

  372. to receive

  373. the necessary equipment.

  374. Now,

  375. you wouldn't expect

  376. a soldier

  377. presented

  378. with a particular

  379. uniform

  380. or battle dress

  381. to say

  382. to the quartermaster,

  383. well,

  384. you know,

  385. haven't you got

  386. something else?

  387. Kaki really isn't

  388. my color,

  389. you know?

  390. Don't you have

  391. anything in powder blue?

  392. The soldier

  393. is given

  394. what he needs

  395. for the task

  396. or mission in hand.

  397. He's given

  398. what he needs

  399. and not what he wants.

  400. And I think

  401. that's the sense here.

  402. God promises

  403. to provide

  404. what we need

  405. not what we want.

  406. He will give us

  407. everything good

  408. that we require.

  409. And the word

  410. equip here

  411. is a word

  412. that's used

  413. elsewhere in

  414. the New Testament

  415. to describe

  416. the disciples

  417. mending their nets.

  418. Used in Ephesians

  419. where Paul speaks

  420. of equipping

  421. the saints

  422. for the work

  423. of ministry.

  424. Literally,

  425. it means

  426. to put something

  427. together

  428. so that it

  429. can be used

  430. effectively.

  431. And the idea

  432. is that God

  433. will supply

  434. what is missing.

  435. He will correct

  436. what is wrong.

  437. He'll repair

  438. what is defective.

  439. He will restore

  440. what is broken.

  441. He will make us

  442. his effective

  443. servants.

  444. We cannot

  445. do the will

  446. of God

  447. on our own.

  448. We need

  449. God's provision.

  450. We need

  451. his help.

  452. We need

  453. him to

  454. correct us

  455. and restore

  456. us

  457. and equip

  458. us.

  459. Here is the

  460. God who supplies

  461. all that we

  462. need in and

  463. through the

  464. Lord Jesus

  465. Christ.

  466. He's worked

  467. within us

  468. in the power

  469. of the Holy

  470. Spirit.

  471. And he works

  472. in us to do

  473. what is pleasing

  474. in his sight.

  475. In other words,

  476. he's doing in us

  477. what pleases

  478. him,

  479. not what pleases

  480. us.

  481. He's at work

  482. in our lives

  483. to shape

  484. us and

  485. to mold

  486. us that

  487. our lives

  488. become pleasing

  489. to God.

  490. And that's a

  491. somewhat scary

  492. thought.

  493. Who knows

  494. what God

  495. might do

  496. in us

  497. and through

  498. us in

  499. this coming

  500. year.

  501. Nonetheless,

  502. he calls

  503. us.

  504. He calls

  505. you to

  506. yield

  507. yourself

  508. completely

  509. to him

  510. and to

  511. hold nothing

  512. back from

  513. him.

  514. Sometimes

  515. it is

  516. in like

  517. the Hebrews

  518. of old.

  519. in the

  520. crucible

  521. of trial

  522. and testing

  523. that he

  524. works out

  525. his good

  526. purpose.

  527. And we

  528. need to

  529. know that

  530. however

  531. mysterious

  532. and sore

  533. sometimes

  534. our

  535. circumstances

  536. can be,

  537. they are

  538. being woven

  539. for our

  540. good

  541. and for

  542. God's

  543. glory.

  544. He's

  545. using

  546. these

  547. things

  548. to

  549. equip

  550. our

  551. lives

  552. that

  553. we

  554. might

  555. please

  556. him.

  557. Our

  558. effectiveness

  559. as

  560. Christians

  561. is not

  562. about

  563. whether

  564. things are

  565. going

  566. well

  567. in our

  568. lives.

  569. It's

  570. not

  571. about

  572. our

  573. health

  574. or

  575. our

  576. wealth.

  577. It's

  578. about

  579. the

  580. God

  581. who

  582. is

  583. at

  584. work

  585. within

  586. us

  587. shaping

  588. us

  589. to be

  590. more

  591. like

  592. Jesus

  593. Christ.

  594. Are we

  595. looking to

  596. do

  597. what is

  598. pleasing

  599. in his

  600. sight?

  601. Are we

  602. living to

  603. please

  604. him?

  605. If we

  606. are,

  607. then that's

  608. a sign

  609. that the

  610. God of

  611. peace

  612. is already

  613. at work

  614. in our

  615. lives.

  616. He's

  617. mighty

  618. to save.

  619. He's

  620. ready

  621. to

  622. equip.

  623. Thirdly

  624. and finally,

  625. he's

  626. worthy

  627. of

  628. praise.

  629. That's

  630. the

  631. third

  632. thing.

  633. Through

  634. Jesus

  635. Christ,

  636. to whom

  637. be glory

  638. forever

  639. and ever.

  640. Amen.

  641. The

  642. God

  643. who

  644. redeems

  645. his

  646. people

  647. is the

  648. God

  649. who

  650. resources

  651. his

  652. people

  653. is also

  654. the

  655. God

  656. who

  657. receives

  658. the

  659. praise

  660. of

  661. his

  662. people.

  663. He

  664. is

  665. worthy

  666. of

  667. all

  668. glory.

  669. That's

  670. a

  671. statement

  672. of

  673. fact.

  674. We're

  675. to

  676. live

  677. for

  678. the

  679. praise

  680. of

  681. his

  682. glory.

  683. glory.

  684. Now,

  685. we can't

  686. be sure

  687. here whether

  688. this glory

  689. refers to

  690. the God

  691. of peace

  692. or to

  693. Jesus

  694. Christ.

  695. It can

  696. be read

  697. both ways.

  698. It's

  699. perhaps

  700. most likely,

  701. I think,

  702. it is a

  703. reference to

  704. Jesus who's

  705. just been

  706. mentioned.

  707. It's

  708. through

  709. Jesus that

  710. God is

  711. mighty to

  712. save,

  713. through

  714. Jesus that

  715. God

  716. equips

  717. us as

  718. his

  719. saints,

  720. and it's

  721. through

  722. Jesus that

  723. he receives

  724. all the

  725. praise and

  726. the glory.

  727. Glory

  728. belongs

  729. to

  730. Jesus.

  731. So,

  732. one of the

  733. great features

  734. of the

  735. New Testament

  736. is the way

  737. both the

  738. Father and

  739. the Son are

  740. deemed worthy

  741. of praise and

  742. glory.

  743. It's the

  744. basis of

  745. our doctrine

  746. of the

  747. Trinity.

  748. In the

  749. New Testament,

  750. a person's

  751. glory is

  752. their good

  753. reputation.

  754. It's that

  755. about them

  756. that is

  757. praiseworthy.

  758. And,

  759. in a sense,

  760. glory is not

  761. something that

  762. we can give

  763. to God.

  764. He already

  765. possesses that.

  766. We can't

  767. make him more

  768. glorious than

  769. he already

  770. is.

  771. So,

  772. when the

  773. Bible

  774. ascribes

  775. glory to

  776. God,

  777. it's not

  778. suggesting that

  779. we can in

  780. any way add

  781. glory to

  782. him.

  783. It simply

  784. means that

  785. we are to

  786. recognize it,

  787. acknowledge it,

  788. and declare

  789. the worth

  790. and the glory

  791. that is already

  792. there.

  793. And here,

  794. it's as if

  795. the mention

  796. of Jesus'

  797. name sets

  798. off the

  799. writer's

  800. praise instinct.

  801. Most of us

  802. will be aware,

  803. perhaps in our

  804. families or

  805. amongst our

  806. friends,

  807. how just

  808. the mention

  809. of a

  810. certain name

  811. can set

  812. off a

  813. kind of

  814. immediate

  815. and very

  816. predictable

  817. response.

  818. You know,

  819. if you drop

  820. a certain

  821. person's name

  822. into the

  823. conversation,

  824. it's almost,

  825. you know,

  826. we're lighting

  827. the blue

  828. touch paper,

  829. and you want

  830. to stand

  831. well back.

  832. You know,

  833. you stand

  834. back and you

  835. watch them

  836. go off in

  837. one.

  838. You need to

  839. mention,

  840. you know,

  841. Keir Starmer

  842. or Donald

  843. Trump or

  844. Nicola

  845. Sturgeon,

  846. whoever it

  847. is,

  848. it doesn't

  849. matter.

  850. But you

  851. only need

  852. to make

  853. mention of

  854. the name.

  855. And whoosh,

  856. people are

  857. cannot help

  858. themselves,

  859. often launching

  860. into a

  861. well-worn

  862. diatribe.

  863. Now,

  864. I wonder

  865. if there's

  866. something of

  867. that going

  868. on here.

  869. It's just

  870. the mention

  871. of the name

  872. of Jesus

  873. Christ.

  874. And immediately

  875. the writer

  876. goes off

  877. in praise

  878. and adoration.

  879. Jesus' name

  880. calls forth

  881. an ascription

  882. of glory.

  883. Actually,

  884. this is something

  885. we see right

  886. throughout the

  887. New Testament.

  888. It's a kind

  889. of praise

  890. instinct.

  891. You know,

  892. they just

  893. cannot help

  894. themselves.

  895. I wonder

  896. if you have

  897. that kind

  898. of praise

  899. instinct

  900. when Jesus'

  901. name is

  902. mentioned.

  903. We're to

  904. glorify the

  905. God who

  906. redeems and

  907. resources us,

  908. not only by

  909. going to

  910. church or

  911. reading the

  912. Bible or

  913. praying or

  914. sharing the

  915. gospel or

  916. praising His

  917. name.

  918. Of course,

  919. all these

  920. things are

  921. good and

  922. glorify Him.

  923. But God

  924. calls us to

  925. glorify Him

  926. in the

  927. simple things

  928. of everyday

  929. life.

  930. And drinking

  931. a glass of

  932. water,

  933. eating a

  934. sandwich at

  935. work,

  936. at recreation,

  937. at leisure,

  938. all these and

  939. more are

  940. included.

  941. There is no

  942. division of

  943. life into

  944. that which is

  945. religious and

  946. spiritual and

  947. that which is

  948. not.

  949. For God in

  950. Christ has

  951. redeemed all

  952. of our lives.

  953. Our whole

  954. lives are to

  955. be given over

  956. to doing His

  957. will and to

  958. doing what is

  959. pleasing in His

  960. sight.

  961. And that's

  962. what the

  963. writer of

  964. Hebrews wanted

  965. his readers

  966. to understand.

  967. The God who

  968. raised Jesus

  969. from the dead

  970. is well able

  971. to keep them

  972. and hold them

  973. fast in troubled

  974. times.

  975. He'll resource

  976. them so that

  977. they can live

  978. for His glory.

  979. That's a vital

  980. message for us

  981. as we enter

  982. this new year.

  983. The future lies

  984. unknown before us.

  985. Who knows what

  986. trials and

  987. troubles may come

  988. our way?

  989. Who knows what

  990. temptations we

  991. will face?

  992. Who knows the

  993. challenges we're

  994. going to

  995. encounter.

  996. Bereavement,

  997. loss,

  998. sickness,

  999. death,

  1000. opposition,

  1001. trial.

  1002. Sometimes we

  1003. wonder if we

  1004. have what it

  1005. takes to make

  1006. it through

  1007. another year.

  1008. We question if

  1009. we have what it

  1010. takes to endure.

  1011. We're weak,

  1012. fragile human

  1013. beings.

  1014. How can we

  1015. make it?

  1016. How can we

  1017. make it to

  1018. heaven?

  1019. How can we

  1020. keep going in

  1021. the way of

  1022. faith?

  1023. Friends, the

  1024. answer is that

  1025. God will keep

  1026. us by His

  1027. power.

  1028. He will

  1029. guard us.

  1030. Paul says to

  1031. the Philippians,

  1032. I'm sure of

  1033. this, that he

  1034. who began a

  1035. good work in

  1036. you will bring

  1037. it to

  1038. completion at

  1039. the day of

  1040. Jesus Christ.

  1041. There's an

  1042. apocryphal story

  1043. of a Scotsman

  1044. traveling across

  1045. the Atlantic,

  1046. I think, by

  1047. ship.

  1048. and in

  1049. order to

  1050. save money,

  1051. he was a

  1052. kind of

  1053. archetypal

  1054. Scotsman.

  1055. He liked to

  1056. hold on to

  1057. his pennies.

  1058. He had

  1059. resolved on

  1060. this journey

  1061. only to

  1062. eat cheese

  1063. and biscuits.

  1064. And so

  1065. morning,

  1066. noon, and

  1067. night, he

  1068. had only

  1069. some biscuits

  1070. and some

  1071. cheese.

  1072. However, by

  1073. the third

  1074. day into

  1075. the journey,

  1076. his resolve

  1077. started to

  1078. weaken.

  1079. The cheese

  1080. was hard,

  1081. the biscuits

  1082. were soft,

  1083. and he

  1084. looked through

  1085. the window

  1086. into the

  1087. dining salon.

  1088. He saw

  1089. all the

  1090. people there

  1091. eating.

  1092. And so

  1093. he approached

  1094. the steward

  1095. and asked

  1096. them, how

  1097. much, you

  1098. know, how

  1099. much would

  1100. it be for

  1101. one meal?

  1102. How much

  1103. would it

  1104. cost?

  1105. And the

  1106. steward

  1107. looked at

  1108. him with

  1109. a quizzical

  1110. expression

  1111. before explaining

  1112. to him

  1113. that all the

  1114. meals were

  1115. included in

  1116. his ticket.

  1117. Friends, we're

  1118. to rest in

  1119. the assurance

  1120. that God's

  1121. power will

  1122. keep us and

  1123. preserve us

  1124. for heaven.

  1125. It's all

  1126. included in

  1127. the passage.

  1128. It's all

  1129. part of that

  1130. great salvation

  1131. won for us

  1132. by Jesus

  1133. Christ.

  1134. We may not

  1135. have what it

  1136. takes, but

  1137. Jesus Christ

  1138. does.

  1139. Remember on

  1140. this New

  1141. Year's Day

  1142. that he is

  1143. your risen

  1144. Lord.

  1145. Lord, he

  1146. is your

  1147. good shepherd.

  1148. He is your

  1149. great Savior,

  1150. mighty to

  1151. save, ready

  1152. to equip,

  1153. worthy of

  1154. our praise.

  1155. And as you

  1156. step into

  1157. this new

  1158. year, may

  1159. you, by

  1160. faith, receive

  1161. this great

  1162. benediction of

  1163. God.

  1164. Let's pray

  1165. together.

  1166. Lord, we

  1167. are weak

  1168. and frail

  1169. human beings.

  1170. We look

  1171. away from

  1172. ourselves.

  1173. We look to

  1174. you, the

  1175. living God,

  1176. the God of

  1177. peace.

  1178. We look to

  1179. our Lord

  1180. Jesus Christ,

  1181. the great

  1182. shepherd of

  1183. the sheep,

  1184. the one who

  1185. has shed the

  1186. blood of the

  1187. eternal covenant,

  1188. the one who

  1189. has risen from

  1190. the dead.

  1191. God, and we

  1192. rest our

  1193. faith in

  1194. him.

  1195. And we

  1196. pray that as

  1197. we step into

  1198. the rest of

  1199. 2026, we

  1200. would draw

  1201. from you all

  1202. the resources

  1203. that we need

  1204. to live for

  1205. you and to

  1206. live for your

  1207. glory.

  1208. We pray this

  1209. in Jesus'

  1210. name.

  1211. Amen.

  1212. Amen.

  1213. Amen.
