  1. The scripture reading comes from Acts chapter 3, starting from verse 1 we read.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. He asked to receive alms.

  4. And Peter directed his gaze at him and did join and said,

  5. Look at us.

  6. And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

  7. But Peter said,

  8. I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you.

  9. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.

  10. And he took him by the right hand and raised him up.

  11. And immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.

  12. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk and enter the temple with them,

  13. walking and leaping and praising God.

  14. And all the people saw him walking and praising God

  15. and recognized him as the one who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple,

  16. asking for alms.

  17. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

  18. While he clung to Peter and John,

  19. all the people, utterly astonished,

  20. ran together to them in the particle called Solomon's.

  21. And when Peter saw it, he addressed the people.

  22. Men of Israel,

  23. why do you wonder at this?

  24. Or why do you stare at us?

  25. As though by our own power or piety, we have made him walk.

  26. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob,

  27. the God of our fathers glorified his servant Jesus,

  28. whom you had delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate.

  29. When he had decided to release him,

  30. but you denied the holy and righteous one

  31. and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.

  32. And you killed the author of life, whom God raised from the dead.

  33. To this we are witnesses.

  34. And his name, by faith in his name,

  35. has made this man strong, whom you see and know.

  36. And the faith that is through Jesus

  37. has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.

  38. And now, brothers,

  39. I know that you acted in ignorance, as is also your rulers.

  40. But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets

  41. that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled.

  42. Repent, therefore, and turn back,

  43. that your sins may be blotted out,

  44. that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

  45. and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus,

  46. whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring

  47. all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.

  48. Moses said,

  49. The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

  50. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you.

  51. And it shall be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet

  52. shall be destroyed from the people.

  53. And all the prophets who have spoken,

  54. from Samuel and those who came after him,

  55. also proclaim these days,

  56. You are the sons of the prophets

  57. and of the covenant that God made with your fathers.

  58. Sing to Abraham,

  59. And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

  60. God, having raised up his servants,

  61. sent him to you first,

  62. to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

  63. This is the word of God.

  64. Okay, let me pray for us before we dive into God's word.

  65. Father, we come before you.

  66. God, you are king forevermore.

  67. Your word is life,

  68. and your word is true.

  69. God, as we look into your scriptures,

  70. Father, we pray through your spirit,

  71. would you reveal the treasures that are found in here?

  72. Would you speak to all of us,

  73. as individuals and as a church,

  74. to love you,

  75. to serve you,

  76. to give all of ourselves away to you, God,

  77. for you are worthy of it all.

  78. And we glorify you.

  79. So God, come,

  80. be glorified in these things.

  81. In Jesus' name we pray.

  82. Amen.

  83. Church,

  84. if you don't know me,

  85. my name is Alan.

  86. I'm one of the staff here at Watermark.

  87. It is such a joy to bring God's word to us this morning.

  88. If you've been with us for the past few weeks,

  89. about four weeks,

  90. we've been going through the book of Acts.

  91. And it's a volume two written by Luke,

  92. and which basically tells us about what happened

  93. after Jesus ascended into heaven.

  94. And through the chapters,

  95. we've been seeing the pouring of the Holy Spirit,

  96. through which Peter stands up

  97. and gives incredible sermon,

  98. preaches the gospel,

  99. and you have all this crowd,

  100. about 3,000 people coming

  101. and believing and being baptized.

  102. And after which,

  103. just last week,

  104. we heard about this community that starts,

  105. a community that's formed by God,

  106. and in one short sentence,

  107. it was a community,

  108. a church,

  109. that belonged to God

  110. and belonged to one another.

  111. It was an incredible community,

  112. a church.

  113. And apart from the people in that community

  114. devoting themselves to the teachings of the apostles,

  115. apart from them breaking breaks,

  116. praying,

  117. praising God,

  118. as people come together to sell their possessions,

  119. so that anyone in their midst

  120. that were in need was given and provided for,

  121. one of the other things that we also see

  122. was that there were wonders and signs

  123. that were being done through the apostles.

  124. So, Luke,

  125. who we know is a physician,

  126. a doctor,

  127. now seems to take out one of those wonders and signs

  128. and talk about it in chapter 3 that we just read.

  129. Now, today,

  130. one of the questions

  131. that it's going to help us answer

  132. is a question that all of us

  133. needs to answer

  134. every day of our lives.

  135. It's a question that we as a church,

  136. as a group,

  137. needs to answer

  138. every day of our lives.

  139. And the question is this,

  140. what matters to you most?

  141. What matters to,

  142. what matters the most to us as a church?

  143. And what we just read is that

  144. we're going to talk about the miracle

  145. that Peter does,

  146. and for the second time,

  147. he's going to stand up and explain it

  148. and talk about

  149. what is actually more important

  150. than the healing.

  151. And the healing and the miracle

  152. is almost going to act like a signpost

  153. pointing us towards that.

  154. So, if you have your Bibles,

  155. you can follow along.

  156. Let's dive into God's Word

  157. where the first thing we encounter is

  158. the sign.

  159. We're going to look into verses 1 to 10.

  160. Now, Peter and John,

  161. they are on their way to the temple,

  162. and on the way there,

  163. they encounter this lame man.

  164. Verse 2 tells us that

  165. this man was carried there

  166. so that he could beg

  167. in a gate called

  168. the Beautiful Gate.

  169. Since giving of alms,

  170. or giving of money

  171. to poor people or beggars

  172. were something that was good

  173. in the Jewish religion,

  174. so that means

  175. the place to sit

  176. right at the temple gate

  177. was the ideal spot.

  178. What is more is that

  179. in the same verse,

  180. we see that this is a man

  181. that was lame from birth,

  182. which makes this miracle

  183. even more miraculous,

  184. and also chapter 4 tells us

  185. that this man is actually

  186. over 40 years old.

  187. Now, so here is this lame man

  188. sitting at the gate,

  189. most probably shouting

  190. the same thing

  191. he has been shouting

  192. for over 40 years.

  193. And when suddenly

  194. these two strangers

  195. walk up to him,

  196. stop before him,

  197. look at him directly,

  198. and one of them, Peter,

  199. goes on to say,

  200. I have no silver and gold.

  201. And I'm sure the lame man's

  202. heart must have sank,

  203. because he believed

  204. that that was what

  205. he needed the most.

  206. And that's a terrible thing

  207. to say to a beggar.

  208. I don't have any money.

  209. But, Peter does not stop there.

  210. I have no silver and gold,

  211. but what I do have,

  212. I give to you.

  213. And in the name of Jesus Christ

  214. of Nazareth,

  215. rise up and walk.

  216. And the man is instantaneously healed.

  217. Peter takes him up by his hand

  218. and raises him up,

  219. and he begins to stand,

  220. he begins to walk,

  221. he begins to leap.

  222. Maybe that's leaping

  223. as something he might have seen

  224. one of the children do

  225. in front of the gate.

  226. For the first time in his life,

  227. he's leaping,

  228. walking,

  229. and jumping in joy.

  230. It was quite a sight to behold.

  231. Now, one of the things we see

  232. in the book of Acts

  233. is how the work of Jesus

  234. after he ascended into heaven

  235. is being continued.

  236. Jesus came to proclaim

  237. the good news of the kingdom,

  238. which is continued by the believers

  239. that take the gospel

  240. to the ends of the earth.

  241. We see that Jesus came

  242. to draw people to himself,

  243. to create a people

  244. that belong to God,

  245. and which we saw last week,

  246. which is being done

  247. through the apostles

  248. as people are coming

  249. to be one people

  250. that belong to God.

  251. Now, in chapter 3,

  252. we just read about a healing,

  253. which is interestingly

  254. very similar to the healing

  255. that is done

  256. in Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  257. So now, the question is,

  258. is God still

  259. in the miracle business?

  260. Does God still heal

  261. and do the supernatural things?

  262. There was a man called

  263. Lee Strobel.

  264. I'm sure most of you

  265. might have heard of him.

  266. He's a very famous,

  267. very well-known,

  268. former investigative journalist,

  269. someone who investigates

  270. news and things.

  271. So who, when his wife

  272. became a Christian,

  273. went on this journey

  274. to investigate Christianity

  275. just to prove his wife wrong.

  276. But at the end of the journey,

  277. he finds out that there's

  278. an irrefutable evidence

  279. for Christ and resurrection,

  280. and at the end of it all,

  281. he becomes a Christian himself.

  282. Now, later on,

  283. and he actually does

  284. another investigation.

  285. Later on, he's curious,

  286. and he says,

  287. okay, I'm going to investigate miracles.

  288. Does miracles really happen?

  289. So for two years,

  290. he travels the world.

  291. He goes,

  292. interviews skeptics.

  293. He talks with people

  294. that have experienced miracles,

  295. travels in the places

  296. of the world

  297. where there's reportings

  298. of miracles

  299. and supernatural things,

  300. investigates it,

  301. and at the end of it all,

  302. he writes a book called

  303. A Case for Miracle.

  304. And from this book,

  305. here's a spoiler,

  306. here are his three conclusions.

  307. One,

  308. that actually God is still

  309. in the miracle business.

  310. Two,

  311. that there are actually

  312. more miracles happening

  313. than we think.

  314. And three,

  315. and most of his miracles

  316. are actually more better documented

  317. than most skeptics think.

  318. I mean,

  319. my own mother

  320. had blood cancer

  321. and she was healed.

  322. But I also know

  323. of people

  324. that are faithful,

  325. devoted Christians,

  326. dear friends of mine,

  327. that were not healed.

  328. In one of Lee Strobel's interviews,

  329. he interviews a woman

  330. called Barbara Snyder,

  331. a woman who had

  332. instantaneously been healed

  333. from a disease

  334. that was documented

  335. by well-known doctors,

  336. incredible healing.

  337. And at the end of the interview,

  338. he stands up

  339. and goes to Barbara

  340. and says,

  341. Barbara,

  342. can I give you a hug?

  343. And then he asks her,

  344. Barbara,

  345. why you?

  346. Why not my wife

  347. who has chronic illness

  348. and is in pain every day?

  349. Why,

  350. where is her healing?

  351. But why you?

  352. And Barbara looks at him

  353. and says,

  354. I don't know.

  355. I don't know.

  356. But what I do know

  357. is that our God

  358. is sovereign.

  359. That his ways

  360. and thoughts

  361. are above ours.

  362. That he sees things,

  363. he knows things

  364. that we don't.

  365. And at the end of it all,

  366. ultimately,

  367. one day when Christ returns,

  368. all of his children

  369. will be healed.

  370. There shall be

  371. no more pain,

  372. no more suffering,

  373. no more diseases,

  374. no more death,

  375. no more sin.

  376. You see,

  377. God is still

  378. in the miracle business,

  379. but we should know

  380. that he's sovereign too.

  381. And he does

  382. what is good,

  383. even though we do not see

  384. the good in right now.

  385. Now,

  386. I want us to note

  387. that the title

  388. of this first point

  389. is the sign.

  390. It's not healing

  391. or miracle.

  392. Because throughout

  393. the book of Acts

  394. and actually throughout

  395. the New Testament,

  396. one thing we're going

  397. to see is that

  398. wonders,

  399. miracles,

  400. and signs

  401. are actually meant

  402. to point us

  403. to something

  404. or is either meant

  405. to authenticate

  406. something.

  407. For example,

  408. in the previous chapter,

  409. chapter 2,

  410. verse 22,

  411. Peter addresses the crowd

  412. and he says,

  413. men of Israel,

  414. hear these words,

  415. Jesus of Nazareth,

  416. a man attested to you,

  417. proven to you by God

  418. with what?

  419. With mighty works

  420. and wonders and signs

  421. that God did

  422. through him

  423. in your midst.

  424. Later in chapter 4,

  425. when Peter and John

  426. are caught by the

  427. religious leaders,

  428. the religious leaders

  429. are debating

  430. what to do with them

  431. and one of the things

  432. they find it hard

  433. is to deny

  434. the notable signs

  435. that these two men

  436. have done

  437. while the 40-year-old

  438. layman was standing

  439. right beside them.

  440. You see,

  441. miracles and healings

  442. and signs

  443. and supernatural things

  444. are meant to either

  445. point us to something

  446. or to authenticate

  447. something or someone.

  448. So,

  449. in this chapter 3,

  450. what is this healing

  451. or sign meant

  452. to authenticate?

  453. What is this sign

  454. pointing us towards?

  455. What was it that mattered

  456. so much more

  457. than the healing

  458. and the excitement

  459. that was building

  460. around Peter and John

  461. as people gathered

  462. and were astounded

  463. by what they were seeing here?

  464. Well,

  465. now,

  466. Peter is going to stand up

  467. and he's going to address

  468. the crowd

  469. and he's going to

  470. explain the healing

  471. but at the same time

  472. he's going to help us

  473. answer that

  474. which leads us

  475. to our second part,

  476. the object

  477. of this sign.

  478. Now,

  479. let's focus on

  480. verses 11 to 16.

  481. So,

  482. the crowd gathers around.

  483. They're astounded.

  484. Verse 11 tells us

  485. that.

  486. They're astounded.

  487. They're amazed

  488. by what they're seeing.

  489. I mean,

  490. here's a man

  491. that has been

  492. in the gate

  493. for 40 years,

  494. right?

  495. I mean,

  496. I'm sure we all

  497. go to work

  498. and there's certain

  499. things we see

  500. on our way

  501. which we get so used to.

  502. Could be our security guards

  503. and we're like,

  504. we see this person

  505. every day

  506. and one day

  507. when he's not there

  508. we're like,

  509. where did this guy go?

  510. Must have been

  511. the same experience.

  512. Where is this man?

  513. And suddenly you see

  514. this man is standing

  515. and leaping and jumping.

  516. They're astounded

  517. and Peter takes

  518. this opportunity

  519. as crowd gathers

  520. to see this

  521. and which is very similar

  522. to chapter 2,

  523. right?

  524. In chapter 2

  525. something supernatural

  526. happens

  527. and Peter stands up

  528. to explain.

  529. In chapter 3

  530. again something

  531. supernatural happens.

  532. Now Peter's going

  533. to stand up

  534. and he's going

  535. to address the crowd

  536. and he basically

  537. begins with the

  538. caution,

  539. right?

  540. He says,

  541. why do you wonder?

  542. Or why do you look at us

  543. as if we did it

  544. with our power

  545. or as if this happened

  546. because we are

  547. so godly people?

  548. You see,

  549. the sign of healing

  550. that was happening

  551. was them saying like,

  552. hey,

  553. he's not pointing this,

  554. this sign is not

  555. pointing you guys

  556. towards us.

  557. He's not authenticating us

  558. nor is this power

  559. that the sign

  560. that you've seen

  561. we don't have

  562. the power to do this

  563. nor are,

  564. did we do this

  565. because we are

  566. so godly.

  567. But what it was

  568. pointing towards

  569. or what it was

  570. really authenticating

  571. was what Peter

  572. was about to say.

  573. And in one short

  574. sentence,

  575. what Peter was

  576. about to preach

  577. or say

  578. is this,

  579. is the gospel

  580. of Christ Jesus,

  581. is the goodness

  582. of him.

  583. I mean,

  584. look at verse 13

  585. with me.

  586. Verse 13,

  587. Peter says,

  588. the God of Abraham,

  589. the God of Isaac,

  590. the God of Jacob,

  591. the God of our fathers

  592. glorified his servant

  593. Jesus whom you

  594. delivered over

  595. and denied in the

  596. presence of Pilate

  597. when he had decided

  598. to release him.

  599. Now that's very

  600. interesting of what

  601. Peter is doing here

  602. because Peter is

  603. saying two things

  604. at the same time.

  605. He's saying,

  606. this is who Jesus is

  607. and this is what

  608. you have done to him.

  609. I mean,

  610. he's saying,

  611. this is Jesus,

  612. the one who

  613. our fathers chose.

  614. He's the chosen

  615. servant of the

  616. God of our fathers.

  617. But you denied him,

  618. you delivered him

  619. and denied him

  620. and killed him.

  621. Verse 14,

  622. he's the holy

  623. and the righteous one

  624. but you denied him

  625. and asked for a

  626. murder in his place.

  627. Referring to the time

  628. when Pilate

  629. gave people a choice

  630. to either release

  631. Jesus or release

  632. this murder

  633. called Barabbas.

  634. Verse 15,

  635. he's the author

  636. of life

  637. but you killed him.

  638. And in the end,

  639. Peter says,

  640. and that Jesus

  641. is the one

  642. through whom

  643. this man has been healed.

  644. Now that's a very

  645. funny

  646. or interesting way

  647. to answer the question

  648. how did this healing happen?

  649. I mean,

  650. Peter could have just

  651. gone and said,

  652. hey guys,

  653. this man was healed

  654. because of Jesus.

  655. We prayed in the name

  656. of Jesus

  657. and we had faith

  658. in him

  659. and this man

  660. was healed.

  661. Peter could have

  662. just said that

  663. and got it over with

  664. and not gone on

  665. this long,

  666. long paragraph.

  667. But you see,

  668. Peter is very intentional

  669. about what he's doing.

  670. Peter knows what he's saying

  671. because,

  672. you see,

  673. Peter was not interested,

  674. not just interested

  675. in telling them

  676. about the healing

  677. but he was actually

  678. more interested

  679. in telling them

  680. about the source

  681. of the healing.

  682. He was not interested

  683. in telling them

  684. how great this healing was

  685. but he was more interested

  686. in telling the people

  687. how great the healer was.

  688. You see,

  689. when Peter was talking

  690. about Jesus here,

  691. I want us to note,

  692. he was not talking

  693. to a group of people

  694. like us

  695. who had heard about Jesus

  696. 2,000 years ago.

  697. He was talking

  698. to a crowd of people

  699. that had actually

  700. seen him,

  701. seen Jesus

  702. just a few months back.

  703. Maybe seen,

  704. heard Jesus teaching.

  705. Maybe this is a group

  706. of people

  707. that have seen

  708. the miracles of Jesus

  709. that have maybe

  710. some of them

  711. have been healed

  712. by Jesus themselves.

  713. Some of them

  714. might have been

  715. shouting,

  716. crucify him.

  717. Or maybe there's

  718. people in the crowd

  719. that have actually

  720. seen Jesus died.

  721. And Peter is standing

  722. in this crowd

  723. and he's saying,

  724. yes,

  725. that's the Jesus

  726. that I am talking about.

  727. Whom you all know,

  728. have seen,

  729. and whom you all know

  730. perfectly well

  731. that had died.

  732. But Peter is also saying,

  733. but guess what?

  734. Jesus is not just

  735. any other man.

  736. Yes, he died,

  737. but there's more.

  738. And in verse 15,

  739. he says,

  740. yes, he died,

  741. but God raised him up

  742. from the dead

  743. to which all of us,

  744. we too,

  745. Peter and John,

  746. are witnesses.

  747. In fact,

  748. there are a lot more witnesses

  749. the fact that Jesus

  750. was risen

  751. and he's alive.

  752. So this is what

  753. Peter is saying.

  754. Yes,

  755. he's truly the chosen one.

  756. Yes,

  757. he's truly the glorified

  758. servant of God.

  759. He's truly the holy,

  760. the set apart,

  761. the righteous,

  762. the perfectly moral,

  763. perfect being.

  764. He's truly that Christ.

  765. He's the author of life,

  766. the source of life.

  767. Can you think about that?

  768. Jesus is the source of life,

  769. the very air that we breathe,

  770. the very bodies that we have,

  771. the very souls that we have,

  772. the very nerves that we have.

  773. Jesus is the one

  774. who gives us,

  775. he's the source of life,

  776. he's the author of life

  777. and he's not just dead,

  778. he's truly risen.

  779. This is Christ,

  780. this is what Peter is saying

  781. to them.

  782. But Peter is also saying,

  783. but guys,

  784. you killed him.

  785. You denied him.

  786. You chose a murderer

  787. to be set free

  788. instead of him.

  789. Now I'm sure

  790. among that crowd,

  791. there must have been

  792. few people that have,

  793. must have been thinking,

  794. whoa, whoa, whoa,

  795. wait Peter.

  796. I was not even in town

  797. when they killed Peter.

  798. They killed John,

  799. Jesus.

  800. I was in the other side of town

  801. preparing my family

  802. for Passover.

  803. I mean,

  804. I didn't even shout,

  805. I didn't do any of the things

  806. that you said.

  807. I mean,

  808. this guy might have did it,

  809. but I don't know,

  810. it's not me.

  811. And beloved friends,

  812. maybe that's what we think too.

  813. Maybe we literally are

  814. in the way we live.

  815. But it is true,

  816. you see,

  817. none of us in this hall

  818. was there to nail Jesus

  819. at the cross.

  820. None of us was there

  821. shouting crucify him.

  822. But there's an old hymn

  823. that might help us.

  824. And there's an old hymn

  825. that we do sing at Watermark

  826. and it goes like this.

  827. Behold the man upon a cross,

  828. my sin upon his shoulders.

  829. Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

  830. call out among the scoffers.

  831. It was my sin

  832. that held him there

  833. until it was accomplished.

  834. His dying breath

  835. has brought me life.

  836. I know that it is finished.

  837. Church,

  838. it might not have been

  839. our hands

  840. that nailed Christ

  841. to the cross,

  842. but it was definitely

  843. our sin

  844. that took him

  845. and held him

  846. at the cross.

  847. 1 Peter 2.24

  848. tells us,

  849. he,

  850. Jesus himself,

  851. bore our sin

  852. in his body

  853. at the cross.

  854. And this could be a place

  855. where we could take a pause

  856. and think,

  857. church,

  858. how much do we ponder

  859. about that?

  860. How much do we ponder

  861. about our sin

  862. that nailed

  863. and held Christ

  864. to the cross?

  865. You know,

  866. in my life,

  867. I'm very quick

  868. to ask for forgiveness

  869. and say,

  870. thank you,

  871. Jesus,

  872. and move on

  873. with life.

  874. Which is not bad.

  875. But there is wisdom

  876. in actually pausing

  877. and meditating

  878. over the depravity

  879. and the terrible nature

  880. of our sin.

  881. You see,

  882. this is a quote

  883. that was taken

  884. from an article

  885. from a website

  886. called Desiring God

  887. written by a man

  888. called Greg Morse.

  889. And at the end

  890. of the article,

  891. he says this.

  892. He says,

  893. I've watched

  894. The Passion of Christ,

  895. which is an old movie

  896. about the death of Jesus.

  897. I've watched

  898. The Passion of Christ

  899. each year

  900. for four years

  901. being moved

  902. every time to tears,

  903. which I'm sure

  904. all of us can relate.

  905. And all the while,

  906. I was not truly born again.

  907. All the while,

  908. my life was not

  909. really changed.

  910. And I thought myself

  911. better for crying

  912. as if my sins

  913. would be passed over

  914. if I had tears

  915. painted on the doorpost.

  916. You see,

  917. it did not take

  918. a regenerate heart,

  919. a changed heart

  920. to weep over

  921. the sufferings of Jesus

  922. while our world

  923. is full of unbelievers

  924. who cry over sad things.

  925. But it did take

  926. a regenerate heart

  927. to mourn over

  928. what I rarely mourned over.

  929. And it was my sins.

  930. Church,

  931. how much does our sin

  932. make us weep?

  933. When was the last time

  934. we fell on our knees

  935. and mourned over

  936. our sin

  937. that took our Savior

  938. to the cross?

  939. And there is wisdom

  940. in staying there.

  941. But there is also

  942. this news that

  943. and there is also

  944. this truth

  945. that the burden

  946. of sin

  947. is something

  948. none of us can bear.

  949. Which is why

  950. Jesus took our sin

  951. upon Himself

  952. on that cross.

  953. None of us can bear

  954. the burden

  955. and the penalty

  956. of our sin.

  957. Jesus took it

  958. on Himself

  959. on the cross.

  960. He died

  961. and rose again

  962. paying the penalty

  963. of our sin

  964. that none of us

  965. could do.

  966. Freeing us

  967. and feed us

  968. from the power

  969. of sin

  970. and ultimately

  971. one day

  972. when He returns

  973. there shall be

  974. no more sin.

  975. Jesus did that

  976. and Peter knew that.

  977. Peter knew

  978. the people

  979. that were listening

  980. to Him

  981. could not bear

  982. the burden of sin.

  983. Which is why

  984. thankfully

  985. He continues

  986. His sermon.

  987. Because you see

  988. the goodness

  989. of Jesus Christ

  990. the gospel

  991. does not

  992. just end there.

  993. The gospel

  994. ends

  995. in an invitation.

  996. An invitation

  997. to come

  998. invitation

  999. to come

  1000. and turn away

  1001. from our sin.

  1002. Which leads us

  1003. to our last point.

  1004. The call

  1005. to turn away.

  1006. Let's look at

  1007. the last few verses

  1008. from verse 17

  1009. to 26.

  1010. Verse 17

  1011. Peter begins

  1012. and says

  1013. you have acted

  1014. in ignorance.

  1015. Or in other words

  1016. you did not know.

  1017. Well God knew

  1018. but you guys

  1019. did not know.

  1020. And that's very

  1021. interesting because

  1022. isn't that one

  1023. of the things

  1024. that sin

  1025. does to us?

  1026. Sin makes us

  1027. blind

  1028. to our own

  1029. sinfulness.

  1030. Sin makes us

  1031. blind to our

  1032. own depravity

  1033. our own

  1034. disgusting nature

  1035. of sin

  1036. that lies within.

  1037. That's what sin

  1038. does and that's

  1039. a very sober

  1040. warning to hear

  1041. this morning.

  1042. Because

  1043. and the question

  1044. is are we

  1045. blinded by our

  1046. sin?

  1047. so much

  1048. that we

  1049. are

  1050. unresponsive

  1051. our hearts

  1052. are unresponsive

  1053. to God's

  1054. word

  1055. and godly

  1056. counsel.

  1057. That's a

  1058. legit warning

  1059. here.

  1060. Well and Peter

  1061. goes on

  1062. then he says

  1063. well

  1064. repent

  1065. turn back.

  1066. he says

  1067. that in

  1068. verse

  1069. 19

  1070. repent

  1071. therefore

  1072. turn back

  1073. that your

  1074. sins

  1075. may be

  1076. blotted

  1077. out.

  1078. And that

  1079. is what

  1080. repentance

  1081. is isn't

  1082. it?

  1083. To turn

  1084. back

  1085. to turn

  1086. and 180

  1087. decrease

  1088. turn away.

  1089. And many

  1090. times we

  1091. think that

  1092. repentance

  1093. is sober

  1094. and serious

  1095. and many

  1096. times

  1097. many ways

  1098. sad.

  1099. But actually

  1100. if you really

  1101. look at what

  1102. Peter is saying

  1103. he's actually

  1104. very joyful.

  1105. At times

  1106. yes

  1107. repentance

  1108. is serious

  1109. but at the

  1110. same time

  1111. repentance

  1112. is also

  1113. joyful

  1114. and full

  1115. of great

  1116. celebration.

  1117. I mean

  1118. it's like

  1119. a child

  1120. that is

  1121. wondering

  1122. if his

  1123. mother is

  1124. still angry

  1125. with him

  1126. or not

  1127. and suddenly

  1128. sees a

  1129. smiling face

  1130. and an

  1131. open arm.

  1132. It's like

  1133. two friends

  1134. that have

  1135. been quarreling

  1136. for a long

  1137. time

  1138. and finally

  1139. after a

  1140. long

  1141. conversation

  1142. they have

  1143. a reconciliation.

  1144. And in

  1145. this case

  1146. it's our

  1147. loving

  1148. father

  1149. against

  1150. whom we

  1151. sin

  1152. which brings

  1153. this massive

  1154. chasm

  1155. between us

  1156. and a holy

  1157. God

  1158. but instead

  1159. of us

  1160. paying the

  1161. penalty of

  1162. sin

  1163. he pays

  1164. it

  1165. by sending

  1166. his son

  1167. Jesus Christ

  1168. so that

  1169. whoever

  1170. turns to

  1171. him

  1172. whoever

  1173. repents

  1174. and looks

  1175. towards him

  1176. will be

  1177. reconciled

  1178. joyfully

  1179. to the one

  1180. who knows

  1181. us

  1182. who created

  1183. us

  1184. and who

  1185. loves us

  1186. truly

  1187. I mean

  1188. Jesus

  1189. in Luke

  1190. 15

  1191. talks about

  1192. the son

  1193. who returns

  1194. to his

  1195. father

  1196. who turns

  1197. back to

  1198. his father

  1199. and as

  1200. the father

  1201. sees him

  1202. walking in

  1203. the distance

  1204. he runs

  1205. to the son

  1206. and in

  1207. great joy

  1208. embraces

  1209. the son

  1210. kisses him

  1211. and throws

  1212. him a

  1213. massive

  1214. feast

  1215. you see

  1216. repentance

  1217. yes

  1218. is serious

  1219. but repentance

  1220. is also a

  1221. call

  1222. to come

  1223. and be

  1224. reconciled

  1225. to the

  1226. father

  1227. who loves

  1228. you

  1229. it's a

  1230. call

  1231. to come

  1232. to enter

  1233. into

  1234. his joy

  1235. I mean

  1236. let's

  1237. come back

  1238. to Acts

  1239. 3

  1240. look at

  1241. what

  1242. Peter

  1243. says

  1244. tells

  1245. the

  1246. crowd

  1247. verse

  1248. 19

  1249. he says

  1250. turn

  1251. away

  1252. so that

  1253. why

  1254. so that

  1255. your sins

  1256. may be

  1257. blotted

  1258. out

  1259. the sin

  1260. that

  1261. kills

  1262. us

  1263. the sin

  1264. that breaks

  1265. our

  1266. relationship

  1267. with not

  1268. only God

  1269. with one

  1270. another

  1271. so that

  1272. that sin

  1273. would be

  1274. blotted

  1275. out

  1276. verse

  1277. 20

  1278. so that

  1279. a time

  1280. of refreshing

  1281. may come

  1282. verse 25

  1283. so that

  1284. blessing

  1285. would come

  1286. through you

  1287. to all

  1288. nations

  1289. and verse

  1290. 26

  1291. so that

  1292. you would

  1293. be freed

  1294. from

  1295. wickedness

  1296. this is

  1297. what Peter

  1298. is calling

  1299. the people

  1300. into

  1301. to come

  1302. enter

  1303. into a

  1304. place

  1305. where you

  1306. are truly

  1307. freed

  1308. where you

  1309. are truly

  1310. in joy

  1311. at peace

  1312. one with

  1313. the one

  1314. who made

  1315. you

  1316. and loves

  1317. you

  1318. the place

  1319. where

  1320. your

  1321. souls

  1322. are

  1323. truly

  1324. satisfied

  1325. well

  1326. Peter

  1327. doesn't

  1328. just

  1329. stop

  1330. there

  1331. he

  1332. doesn't

  1333. just

  1334. stop

  1335. telling

  1336. people

  1337. to

  1338. turn

  1339. away

  1340. he

  1341. actually

  1342. tells

  1343. them

  1344. one

  1345. more

  1346. thing

  1347. and he

  1348. says

  1349. yes

  1350. turn

  1351. away

  1352. but

  1353. there's

  1354. something

  1355. you gotta

  1356. turn

  1357. towards

  1358. he

  1359. also

  1360. tells

  1361. them

  1362. what

  1363. to

  1364. turn

  1365. to

  1366. now

  1367. look

  1368. at

  1369. the

  1370. end

  1371. of

  1372. verse

  1373. 21

  1374. where

  1375. he

  1376. was

  1377. saying

  1378. about

  1379. that

  1380. hey

  1381. Jesus

  1382. is in

  1383. heaven

  1384. and one

  1385. day

  1386. he'll

  1387. return

  1388. according

  1389. to the

  1390. words

  1391. of the

  1392. great

  1393. prophets

  1394. long

  1395. ago

  1396. now

  1397. it seems

  1398. that

  1399. Peter

  1400. is

  1401. again

  1402. switching

  1403. gears

  1404. right

  1405. and he's

  1406. switching

  1407. gears

  1408. to

  1409. reverse

  1410. he's

  1411. going

  1412. backwards

  1413. almost

  1414. and what

  1415. he's

  1416. saying

  1417. in

  1418. from

  1419. verse

  1420. 22

  1421. onwards

  1422. he goes

  1423. on

  1424. to

  1425. say

  1426. is

  1427. that

  1428. hey

  1429. you

  1430. remember

  1431. Moses

  1432. the

  1433. great

  1434. Moses

  1435. our

  1436. prophet

  1437. Moses

  1438. he

  1439. actually

  1440. pointed

  1441. to

  1442. Jesus

  1443. I

  1444. mean

  1445. he

  1446. says

  1447. in

  1448. verse

  1449. 22

  1450. Moses

  1451. said

  1452. the

  1453. Lord

  1454. will

  1455. raise

  1456. up

  1457. for

  1458. you

  1459. a

  1460. prophet

  1461. like

  1462. me

  1463. from

  1464. your

  1465. brothers

  1466. who

  1467. you

  1468. shall

  1469. listen

  1470. to

  1471. him

  1472. whatever

  1473. he

  1474. tells

  1475. you

  1476. and

  1477. it

  1478. shall

  1479. be

  1480. that

  1481. every

  1482. soul

  1483. who

  1484. does

  1485. not

  1486. listen

  1487. to

  1488. that

  1489. prophet

  1490. shall

  1491. be

  1492. destroyed

  1493. I

  1494. mean

  1495. Peter

  1496. is

  1497. saying

  1498. the

  1499. great

  1500. prophet

  1501. Moses

  1502. is

  1503. talking

  1504. about

  1505. Jesus

  1506. Jesus

  1507. is

  1508. the

  1509. better

  1510. Moses

  1511. that

  1512. came

  1513. here

  1514. now

  1515. not only

  1516. this

  1517. verse 24

  1518. onwards

  1519. he says

  1520. guys

  1521. all

  1522. the

  1523. prophets

  1524. beginning

  1525. from

  1526. Samuel

  1527. actually

  1528. pointed

  1529. to

  1530. Jesus

  1531. what's

  1532. more

  1533. verse 25

  1534. the

  1535. promise

  1536. that

  1537. was

  1538. made

  1539. to

  1540. Abraham

  1541. Abraham

  1542. the

  1543. most

  1544. important

  1545. person

  1546. in

  1547. the

  1548. Jewish

  1549. religion

  1550. that

  1551. Abraham

  1552. the

  1553. promise

  1554. made

  1555. to

  1556. Abraham

  1557. is

  1558. actually

  1559. all

  1560. fulfilled

  1561. in

  1562. Jesus

  1563. do

  1564. you

  1565. see

  1566. what's

  1567. happening

  1568. here

  1569. how

  1570. Peter

  1571. is

  1572. changing

  1573. gears

  1574. you

  1575. see

  1576. Peter

  1577. is

  1578. not

  1579. just

  1580. telling

  1581. them

  1582. to

  1583. turn

  1584. away

  1585. from

  1586. sin

  1587. towards

  1588. Jesus

  1589. but

  1590. he's

  1591. telling

  1592. them

  1593. to

  1594. turn

  1595. to

  1596. Jesus

  1597. who

  1598. is

  1599. not

  1600. just

  1601. Jesus

  1602. but

  1603. is

  1604. actually

  1605. someone

  1606. who

  1607. is

  1608. unimaginably

  1609. more

  1610. than

  1611. they

  1612. think

  1613. I

  1614. mean

  1615. just

  1616. think

  1617. of

  1618. this

  1619. whole

  1620. chapter

  1621. three

  1622. right

  1623. the

  1624. healing

  1625. gets

  1626. Peter

  1627. the

  1628. healing

  1629. starts

  1630. and

  1631. Peter

  1632. stands

  1633. upon

  1634. among

  1635. the

  1636. people

  1637. and

  1638. he

  1639. tells

  1640. that

  1641. the

  1642. first

  1643. thing

  1644. he

  1645. tells

  1646. them

  1647. is

  1648. Jesus

  1649. is

  1650. more

  1651. Jesus

  1652. is

  1653. holy

  1654. righteous

  1655. Jesus

  1656. is

  1657. the

  1658. author

  1659. of

  1660. life

  1661. and

  1662. yes

  1663. you've

  1664. killed

  1665. Jesus

  1666. is

  1667. the

  1668. one

  1669. that

  1670. all

  1671. prophets

  1672. pointed

  1673. towards

  1674. Jesus

  1675. is

  1676. the

  1677. one

  1678. that

  1679. is

  1680. better

  1681. Moses

  1682. Jesus

  1683. is

  1684. the

  1685. one

  1686. that

  1687. the

  1688. promise

  1689. made

  1690. into

  1691. Abraham

  1692. is

  1693. fulfilled

  1694. church

  1695. your

  1696. life

  1697. you see

  1698. that is

  1699. a very

  1700. important

  1701. question

  1702. because

  1703. it's

  1704. going to

  1705. shape

  1706. the

  1707. way

  1708. we

  1709. live

  1710. the

  1711. way

  1712. we

  1713. think

  1714. the

  1715. way

  1716. we

  1717. organize

  1718. our

  1719. time

  1720. the

  1721. way

  1722. we

  1723. set

  1724. our

  1725. priorities

  1726. and

  1727. if

  1728. you

  1729. look

  1730. at

  1731. chapter

  1732. 3

  1733. what

  1734. mattered

  1735. the

  1736. most

  1737. in

  1738. chapter

  1739. 3

  1740. was

  1741. not

  1742. that

  1743. much

  1744. the

  1745. healing

  1746. or

  1747. how

  1748. the

  1749. healing

  1750. happened

  1751. but

  1752. it

  1753. was

  1754. how

  1755. great

  1756. Jesus

  1757. is

  1758. and

  1759. how

  1760. great

  1761. the

  1762. good

  1763. news

  1764. of

  1765. Jesus

  1766. is

  1767. you

  1768. see

  1769. chapter

  1770. 3

  1771. starts

  1772. with

  1773. the

  1774. healing

  1775. but

  1776. is

  1777. dominated

  1778. by

  1779. Peter

  1780. declaring

  1781. the

  1782. greatness

  1783. of

  1784. Christ

  1785. Jesus

  1786. calling

  1787. people

  1788. to

  1789. repent

  1790. and

  1791. again

  1792. going

  1793. back

  1794. showing

  1795. them

  1796. as

  1797. they

  1798. turn

  1799. back

  1800. to

  1801. him

  1802. that

  1803. this

  1804. Christ

  1805. Jesus

  1806. is

  1807. much

  1808. much

  1809. more

  1810. greater

  1811. than

  1812. anyone

  1813. has

  1814. ever

  1815. imagined

  1816. so

  1817. what

  1818. is it

  1819. that matters

  1820. most in

  1821. our lives

  1822. you see

  1823. if we

  1824. think

  1825. or if we

  1826. say

  1827. that it

  1828. is money

  1829. then

  1830. the way

  1831. we think

  1832. our value

  1833. or other

  1834. people's

  1835. value

  1836. is going

  1837. to be

  1838. shaped

  1839. by how

  1840. much

  1841. people

  1842. earn

  1843. our

  1844. time

  1845. would

  1846. be

  1847. invested

  1848. more

  1849. in

  1850. earning

  1851. money

  1852. versus

  1853. spending

  1854. time

  1855. with our

  1856. families

  1857. or other

  1858. things

  1859. if we

  1860. say

  1861. that

  1862. our

  1863. reputation

  1864. is

  1865. more

  1866. important

  1867. is the

  1868. most

  1869. important

  1870. thing

  1871. in our

  1872. lives

  1873. then

  1874. we

  1875. would

  1876. spend

  1877. most

  1878. of

  1879. our

  1880. lives

  1881. putting

  1882. on a

  1883. mask

  1884. being

  1885. perfect

  1886. by the

  1887. same

  1888. time

  1889. suffering

  1890. under

  1891. the

  1892. burden

  1893. of

  1894. being

  1895. good

  1896. but

  1897. then

  1898. but what

  1899. if the

  1900. thing

  1901. that

  1902. matters

  1903. the

  1904. most

  1905. in

  1906. our

  1907. lives

  1908. is

  1909. the

  1910. greatness

  1911. of

  1912. Christ

  1913. Jesus

  1914. and

  1915. his

  1916. work

  1917. the

  1918. gospel

  1919. then

  1920. how

  1921. would

  1922. that

  1923. change

  1924. our

  1925. lives

  1926. maybe

  1927. the

  1928. way

  1929. we

  1930. arrange

  1931. our

  1932. times

  1933. and

  1934. resources

  1935. would

  1936. be

  1937. different

  1938. maybe

  1939. our

  1940. relationships

  1941. would

  1942. be

  1943. different

  1944. even

  1945. in

  1946. times

  1947. of

  1948. conflict

  1949. in

  1950. the

  1951. way

  1952. we

  1953. move

  1954. towards

  1955. reconciliation

  1956. maybe

  1957. this

  1958. would

  1959. be

  1960. the

  1961. source

  1962. of

  1963. our

  1964. joy

  1965. when

  1966. we

  1967. are

  1968. pursuing

  1969. relationships

  1970. or

  1971. when

  1972. we

  1973. are

  1974. struggling

  1975. with

  1976. singleness

  1977. how

  1978. about

  1979. for us

  1980. as a

  1981. church

  1982. what

  1983. would

  1984. it

  1985. look

  1986. like

  1987. for

  1988. a

  1989. church

  1990. that

  1991. the

  1992. thing

  1993. that

  1994. mattered

  1995. most

  1996. was

  1997. Christ

  1998. Jesus

  1999. the

  2000. glory

  2001. of

  2002. Christ

  2003. Jesus

  2004. and

  2005. his

  2006. good

  2007. news

  2008. maybe

  2009. it

  2010. would

  2011. be

  2012. a

  2013. church

  2014. that

  2015. encourages

  2016. that

  2017. focuses

  2018. on

  2019. each

  2020. other

  2021. encouraging

  2022. one

  2023. other

  2024. to

  2025. love

  2026. Christ

  2027. more

  2028. to

  2029. him

  2030. more

  2031. maybe

  2032. it's

  2033. a

  2034. church

  2035. that

  2036. celebrates

  2037. transformation

  2038. of lives

  2039. and

  2040. baptisms

  2041. it's

  2042. a

  2043. church

  2044. that

  2045. longs

  2046. to

  2047. see

  2048. people

  2049. know

  2050. Christ

  2051. in

  2052. this

  2053. city

  2054. and

  2055. so

  2056. much

  2057. more

  2058. you

  2059. see

  2060. there

  2061. are

  2062. good

  2063. things

  2064. that

  2065. can

  2066. distract

  2067. us

  2068. good

  2069. things

  2070. that

  2071. are

  2072. needed

  2073. like

  2074. programs

  2075. and

  2076. events

  2077. and

  2078. and

  2079. courses

  2080. but

  2081. what

  2082. matters

  2083. most

  2084. what

  2085. has

  2086. to

  2087. matter

  2088. most

  2089. is

  2090. the

  2091. good

  2092. news

  2093. of

  2094. Christ

  2095. Jesus

  2096. who

  2097. is

  2098. more

  2099. glorious

  2100. than

  2101. so

  2102. church

  2103. here's

  2104. an

  2105. invitation

  2106. for

  2107. us

  2108. all

  2109. come

  2110. and

  2111. see

  2112. this

  2113. incredibly

  2114. glorious

  2115. Christ

  2116. Jesus

  2117. here's

  2118. an

  2119. invitation

  2120. for

  2121. all

  2122. of

  2123. us

  2124. whether

  2125. we

  2126. are

  2127. Christians

  2128. or

  2129. not

  2130. Christians

  2131. come

  2132. and

  2133. see

  2134. the

  2135. Christ

  2136. Jesus

  2137. who

  2138. is

  2139. unimaginably

  2140. more

  2141. beautiful

  2142. and

  2143. majestic

  2144. than

  2145. we

  2146. think

  2147. be

  2148. in

  2149. awe

  2150. of

  2151. him

  2152. Christ

  2153. Jesus

  2154. not

  2155. being

  2156. distracted

  2157. by

  2158. things

  2159. good

  2160. things

  2161. in

  2162. our

  2163. lives

  2164. good

  2165. things

  2166. but

  2167. having

  2168. our

  2169. lives

  2170. centered

  2171. around

  2172. the

  2173. gospel

  2174. the

  2175. truth

  2176. of

  2177. God

  2178. Christ

  2179. Jesus

  2180. and

  2181. what

  2182. he

  2183. has

  2184. done

  2185. to

  2186. be

  2187. consumed

  2188. by

  2189. the

  2190. glory

  2191. of

  2192. Christ

  2193. because

  2194. you

  2195. see

  2196. Jesus

  2197. is

  2198. the

  2199. fulfillment

  2200. of

  2201. all

  2202. scriptures

  2203. he

  2204. is

  2205. the

  2206. fulfillment

  2207. of

  2208. all

  2209. promises

  2210. and

  2211. only

  2212. in

  2213. Christ

  2214. Jesus

  2215. is

  2216. where

  2217. we

  2218. have

  2219. reconciliation

  2220. with

  2221. the

  2222. father

  2223. who

  2224. forgives

  2225. our

  2226. sins

  2227. who

  2228. blots

  2229. our

  2230. sins

  2231. away

  2232. who

  2233. brings

  2234. healing

  2235. in

  2236. our

  2237. lives

  2238. whether

  2239. that's

  2240. physical

  2241. or

  2242. spiritual

  2243. or

  2244. emotional

  2245. who

  2246. brings

  2247. us

  2248. refreshment

  2249. and

  2250. blessing

  2251. come

  2252. and

  2253. be

  2254. in

  2255. awe

  2256. of

  2257. Christ
