  1. The passage today is from Acts 4, verses 1 to 31.

    Acts 4:1–31

  2. And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

  3. greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

  4. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.

  5. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

  6. On the next day, the rulers and the elders and the scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,

  7. with Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high priestly family.

  8. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired,

  9. By what power, or by what name, did you do this?

  10. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,

  11. Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man,

  12. by what means this man has been healed,

  13. let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel,

  14. that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified,

  15. whom God raised from the dead,

  16. by him this man is standing before you well.

  17. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you,

  18. the builders, which has become the cornerstone.

  19. And there is salvation in no one else,

  20. for there is no other name under heaven given among men,

  21. by which we must be saved.

  22. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John,

  23. and perceived that they were uneducated, common men,

  24. they were astonished,

  25. and they recognized that they had been with Jesus.

  26. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them,

  27. they had nothing to say in opposition.

  28. But when they had commanded them to leave the council,

  29. they conferred with one another, saying,

  30. What shall we do with these men?

  31. For that a notable sign has been performed through them

  32. is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  33. and we cannot deny it.

  34. But in order that it may spread no further among the people,

  35. let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.

  36. So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all

  37. in the name of Jesus.

  38. But Peter and John answered them,

  39. Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God,

  40. you must judge,

  41. for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.

  42. And when they had further threatened them,

  43. they let them go,

  44. finding no way to punish them,

  45. because of the people,

  46. who were all praising God for what had happened.

  47. For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed

  48. was more than forty years old.

  49. When they were released,

  50. they went to their friends and reported

  51. what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.

  52. And when they heard it,

  53. they lifted their voices together to God and said,

  54. Sovereign Lord,

  55. who made the heaven and the earth and the sea

  56. and everything in them,

  57. who,

  58. through the mouth of our father David,

  59. your servant,

  60. said by the Holy Spirit,

  61. Why did the Gentiles rage

  62. and the peoples plot in vain?

  63. The kings of the earth set themselves,

  64. and the rulers were gathered together

  65. against the Lord and against his anointed.

  66. For truly in this city

  67. they were gathered together

  68. against your holy servant Jesus,

  69. whom you anointed,

  70. both Herod and Pontius Pilate,

  71. along with the Gentiles

  72. and the people of Israel,

  73. to do whatever your hand

  74. and your plan

  75. has predestined to take place.

  76. And now, Lord,

  77. look upon their threats

  78. and grant to your servants

  79. to continue to speak your word

  80. with all boldness,

  81. while you stretch out your hand

  82. to heal,

  83. and signs and wonders are performed

  84. through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

  85. And when they had prayed,

  86. the place in which they were gathered together

  87. were shaken,

  88. and they were all filled

  89. with the Holy Spirit

  90. and continued to speak

  91. the word of God

  92. with boldness.

  93. This is the word of the Lord.

  94. All right, thank you.

  95. Thanks, Hannah.

  96. Let's pray together,

  97. and then we're going to look

  98. at this passage.

  99. Father,

  100. your word is so wonderful.

  101. It's thousands of years old,

  102. and yet it speaks to us

  103. even today.

  104. It speaks to our circumstances.

  105. It speaks to our hearts.

  106. Lord,

  107. as we look at your word,

  108. we pray that you will speak to us.

  109. We are more interested in you speaking

  110. than the opinions of man.

  111. And so, God, I pray,

  112. help us to see

  113. what you want us to see

  114. in your word.

  115. Help us to do here

  116. what you want us to do.

  117. Help us to be the people

  118. that you want us to be.

  119. Lord,

  120. we pray these things

  121. in your wonderful

  122. and your gracious name.

  123. Amen.

  124. As we come to this passage today,

  125. I want us just to,

  126. I want to ask us a question

  127. up front,

  128. and that is,

  129. how do you respond

  130. to fear?

  131. How do you respond

  132. to fear?

  133. How do you respond

  134. when what is maybe

  135. most important to you,

  136. maybe your family,

  137. your life,

  138. your job,

  139. maybe your reputation,

  140. the thing that makes you

  141. feel secure in life,

  142. when that,

  143. when the thing that's

  144. most important to you

  145. is threatened,

  146. is under threat,

  147. is the potential

  148. of being taken away from you.

  149. Friends,

  150. how do you react

  151. when someone challenges you

  152. or accuses you of something,

  153. when someone wants

  154. to take something precious

  155. away from you?

  156. Friends,

  157. how do we respond

  158. when somebody's actions

  159. threaten our security,

  160. our life,

  161. maybe our family members?

  162. I think we can all recognize

  163. that in times such as these,

  164. when we feel threatened

  165. or afraid,

  166. often the deepest,

  167. most real part

  168. of ourselves

  169. is revealed.

  170. There's a guy called Eric

  171. with me for many years.

  172. Eric Reid said,

  173. over many years

  174. I've learned this lesson.

  175. A person's spiritual maturity

  176. is not truly visible

  177. until they don't

  178. get their way.

  179. Then you see

  180. the real person.

  181. And it's true, right?

  182. It's very easy

  183. to kind of play the part

  184. and go through the actions

  185. and have the smiley face.

  186. But when things

  187. don't go our way,

  188. when things that are

  189. precious to us

  190. are threatened

  191. or potentially

  192. taken away,

  193. what's most real to us,

  194. what's deep inside of us

  195. comes alive,

  196. comes out.

  197. Well,

  198. we're working through

  199. the book of Acts

  200. and up until this point

  201. the story has been

  202. very wonderful

  203. and encouraging, right?

  204. In Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  205. the Holy Spirit

  206. is poured out

  207. on the church

  208. and they are filled

  209. with the Spirit

  210. in a remarkable way.

  211. The gospel goes out

  212. and many people respond

  213. and come to saving faith.

  214. An amazing,

  215. amazing community

  216. is formed.

  217. A community of generosity

  218. and selflessness

  219. and giving is formed.

  220. And signs and wonders

  221. are being done.

  222. Miracles are happening.

  223. And everything seems

  224. to be going well.

  225. But the Christian life

  226. isn't always this rosy.

  227. And here on chapter 4

  228. we see the first instances

  229. of trouble coming their way.

  230. Because here we see

  231. the first opposition

  232. against the church.

  233. And what we see

  234. in this passage

  235. is two groups of people

  236. who both are threatened

  237. by the other group.

  238. They both feel threatened.

  239. One is perceived,

  240. one is real.

  241. And yet here in this passage

  242. we see two different ways

  243. of people responding

  244. to the threat

  245. that is in front of them.

  246. Friends,

  247. how do you respond

  248. to feeling threatened

  249. and afraid?

  250. Here we're going to see

  251. two different ways

  252. by two different groups.

  253. And so this passage

  254. that Hannah read to us

  255. is the fallout

  256. from what happened last week.

  257. Don't worry about that Oscar.

  258. Last week

  259. Alan preached

  260. Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  261. and what we saw there

  262. is two disciples

  263. Peter and John

  264. are on their way

  265. to the temple

  266. to pray

  267. at the regular hour

  268. of prayer

  269. and they walk past

  270. a man who is crippled

  271. and he's begging.

  272. He says,

  273. please give me some money

  274. and they say,

  275. we don't have silver and gold

  276. but what we do have

  277. is Jesus Christ.

  278. And they pray for him

  279. and miraculously

  280. his legs are strengthened

  281. and he starts to walk.

  282. He's healed.

  283. And suddenly this man

  284. that's never walked

  285. in his life before

  286. is leaping and dancing

  287. and celebrating

  288. and a crowd starts to form

  289. around Peter and John

  290. and their new friend.

  291. And the crowd forms

  292. and a stir arises

  293. and Peter stands up

  294. and he says,

  295. listen,

  296. this miracle is great

  297. but this isn't

  298. the real miracle.

  299. The real miracle

  300. is that Jesus Christ

  301. was dead

  302. but is now alive again.

  303. And the reason God did this

  304. is because God sent Jesus

  305. to save us from our rebellion.

  306. To save us from our sin.

  307. That's the real miracle.

  308. You want miracles?

  309. Miracles are great

  310. but the amazing miracle,

  311. Jesus Christ has risen

  312. from the dead.

  313. He's alive.

  314. He said,

  315. you can come to know him

  316. and be saved.

  317. And that's where we got to

  318. at the end of last week.

  319. Now in this passage

  320. we're going to see

  321. what happens

  322. as a result

  323. of that instance.

  324. And today we're going to see

  325. three things in this passage.

  326. As always,

  327. we're going to see

  328. the crippling power

  329. of fear and insecurity,

  330. the compelling power

  331. of faith and confidence,

  332. and then thirdly,

  333. how we grow

  334. in this faith and confidence.

  335. Okay,

  336. so let's dive in

  337. and take a look.

  338. Firstly,

  339. the crippling power

  340. of fear and insecurity.

  341. So here,

  342. Peter has just finished

  343. giving this amazing sermon.

  344. He's described

  345. what's happening

  346. to the crowds.

  347. He's impressed upon them

  348. in the fact that

  349. Jesus is the Messiah

  350. who came to rescue

  351. and save us

  352. from our sin.

  353. And look what happens.

  354. Look at chapter 4,

  355. verse 1.

  356. It says,

  357. As they were speaking

  358. to the people,

  359. the priests

  360. and the captain

  361. of the temple,

  362. that means the captain

  363. of the police,

  364. and the Sadducees

  365. came upon them

  366. greatly annoyed

  367. because they were

  368. teaching the people

  369. and proclaiming in Jesus

  370. the resurrection

  371. from the dead.

  372. And they arrested them,

  373. put them in custody

  374. until the next day

  375. for it was already evening.

  376. I wonder what Peter

  377. and John thought

  378. at this, right?

  379. Remember,

  380. they are in Jerusalem,

  381. the very city

  382. that just a few weeks

  383. and months earlier,

  384. Jesus was arrested

  385. one night,

  386. put in custody overnight,

  387. put on trial

  388. the next day,

  389. and then ended up

  390. on a Roman cross.

  391. And so here they are

  392. arrested at night

  393. and trial awaiting

  394. them the next day.

  395. And throughout the night

  396. they must be thinking,

  397. is our fate

  398. going to be the same

  399. as Jesus of Nazareth?

  400. Are we going to end up

  401. on a cross?

  402. And look at verse 6,

  403. Luke just happens

  404. to tell us

  405. who is overseeing

  406. this arrest.

  407. It's Caiaphas,

  408. the high priest,

  409. and his father-in-law,

  410. Annas,

  411. who John tells us

  412. were the same two people

  413. that oversaw the arrest

  414. and the trial

  415. and the crucifixion

  416. of Jesus.

  417. Now,

  418. why would the religious leaders

  419. arrest Peter and John?

  420. I mean,

  421. what have they done wrong?

  422. All they've done

  423. is they've helped

  424. a crippled man

  425. to get strong

  426. and they've done

  427. a sign and a wonder,

  428. what's wrong with that?

  429. Well,

  430. look at what Luke

  431. tells us.

  432. He says,

  433. as they were speaking,

  434. the priests

  435. and the captain

  436. and the Sadducees

  437. came upon them

  438. greatly annoyed

  439. because they were

  440. teaching the people

  441. and proclaiming

  442. Jesus the resurrection

  443. from the dead.

  444. What causes

  445. their annoyance?

  446. Well,

  447. it's not just

  448. that they're telling

  449. people about Jesus.

  450. It's about the fact

  451. that they're proclaiming

  452. the resurrection.

  453. That Jesus of Nazareth

  454. died but didn't stay dead.

  455. He rose again.

  456. And what that means?

  457. And what does it mean?

  458. Well,

  459. it means that Jesus

  460. is the divine king.

  461. He's the messianic king,

  462. the one who rules

  463. on the throne

  464. of not just Israel

  465. but all creation.

  466. He is the king

  467. of the entire universe.

  468. The fact that he died

  469. and rose again

  470. means that Jesus

  471. is not just a good man,

  472. a moral man,

  473. a religious teacher,

  474. a rabbi.

  475. He is the messianic king,

  476. the divine king

  477. that he said he was,

  478. that he proclaimed to be.

  479. And that means

  480. that everyone,

  481. everywhere,

  482. needs to bow down

  483. and surrender

  484. to him as Lord.

  485. Where is Jesus now?

  486. Well,

  487. he's not in the grave.

  488. He's on the throne.

  489. The throne of the entire universe.

  490. And everyone needs to

  491. bow down to him

  492. as king

  493. and as Lord.

  494. Look at the last verse

  495. of Peter's sermon,

  496. chapter 3.

  497. He says this,

  498. God,

  499. having raised Jesus up,

  500. sent him to you first

  501. to bless you.

  502. How?

  503. By turning every one of you

  504. from your rebellion,

  505. from your wickedness.

  506. In the book of Acts,

  507. whenever the apostles

  508. are teaching about Jesus,

  509. what do they proclaim?

  510. The fact that he died

  511. and he rose again,

  512. that he's resurrected

  513. from the grave.

  514. Why?

  515. Because that guarantees

  516. as proof

  517. that Jesus is who he said he is.

  518. He is heaven and earth's

  519. true king.

  520. And this greatly gets

  521. under the skin

  522. of the religious leaders.

  523. They are greatly annoyed.

  524. The word there means

  525. to be agitated,

  526. to be disturbed.

  527. It's like,

  528. your peace has been disturbed.

  529. And now the religious leaders

  530. are agitated.

  531. Something has got

  532. under their skin.

  533. Why?

  534. Because the message

  535. of Jesus as king

  536. is a threat

  537. to their own power.

  538. Their own authority.

  539. Their own influence.

  540. And here the religious leaders

  541. are watching their power,

  542. their authority,

  543. slipping through their hands.

  544. And the more they try

  545. and grasp,

  546. the more it slips

  547. like sand on the beach.

  548. It's slipping through their hands.

  549. And they are deeply afraid.

  550. And they feel deeply threatened.

  551. Friends,

  552. what greatly annoys you?

  553. What causes you

  554. to be afraid?

  555. To feel threatened?

  556. To feel agitated?

  557. If we look back

  558. over the last week

  559. of our lives,

  560. when was it that

  561. the words of our mouth

  562. were harsh

  563. and cutting

  564. and vindictive?

  565. When did we

  566. threaten others

  567. in response

  568. to feeling threatened

  569. ourselves?

  570. When were our words

  571. defensive and harsh?

  572. Why did we speak

  573. like that?

  574. I was thinking

  575. just Thursday night,

  576. Oscar led us

  577. at prayer meeting

  578. and part of the time

  579. was a prayer of confession

  580. and like Alan

  581. led us this morning.

  582. And one of the things

  583. I had to confess

  584. was just that very morning,

  585. taking our kids to school

  586. and there was delays

  587. and, you know,

  588. shoes weren't on in time

  589. and I was getting agitated.

  590. I was getting frustrated

  591. because my plan

  592. and schedule

  593. was being put out of plates, right?

  594. And the words

  595. that came out of my mouth

  596. weren't the nicest words

  597. to my teenage kids.

  598. Friends,

  599. as I look back

  600. over my life,

  601. the times

  602. that I've been

  603. the worst husband,

  604. the worst father,

  605. the worst son,

  606. the worst friend

  607. or colleague,

  608. the times my words

  609. have been the most

  610. cutting and sharp

  611. are often the times

  612. I felt most insecure,

  613. most threatened,

  614. most afraid.

  615. I've told you

  616. this story once before.

  617. I remember

  618. a good friend

  619. in Cape Town.

  620. He was my friend

  621. but also my boss

  622. and I remember

  623. we were texting each other

  624. and he said something

  625. and I felt backed

  626. in a corner

  627. and I sent this message

  628. back saying,

  629. okay Ryan,

  630. if you want to play

  631. like that,

  632. I will also play hardball.

  633. All right?

  634. Probably not the kind

  635. of thing you want

  636. to say to your boss

  637. but feeling pushed

  638. in a corner,

  639. I was going to come

  640. out fighting.

  641. Friends,

  642. what makes us feel

  643. agitated,

  644. annoyed,

  645. defensive,

  646. or aggressive?

  647. And yeah,

  648. we see these

  649. religious leaders,

  650. they are feeling

  651. threatened because

  652. the message of Jesus

  653. is destabilizing

  654. their power,

  655. their authority

  656. and how do they

  657. respond?

  658. Well,

  659. they threaten back.

  660. Look at verse 15

  661. here.

  662. Verse 15 says,

  663. when they had brought

  664. the apostles in

  665. for questioning

  666. and then says,

  667. when they commanded

  668. the disciples

  669. to leave the council,

  670. they conferred

  671. with one another

  672. saying,

  673. what shall we do

  674. with these men?

  675. For that a notable

  676. sign has been performed

  677. through them

  678. is evident to all

  679. the inhabitants

  680. of Jerusalem.

  681. We cannot deny it

  682. but in order

  683. that it may spread

  684. no further,

  685. let us warn them

  686. and to speak

  687. no more

  688. to anybody

  689. in this name.

  690. And verse 21,

  691. when they had

  692. further threatened

  693. them,

  694. they let them go,

  695. finding no way

  696. to punish them

  697. because of all

  698. the people

  699. for they were

  700. praising God

  701. for what had

  702. happened.

  703. How do they

  704. respond to

  705. feeling threatened?

  706. They threaten

  707. back in return.

  708. And one of the

  709. things that John

  710. Stott points out

  711. in his commentary

  712. on this passage

  713. is that nowhere

  714. do the religious

  715. leaders attempt

  716. to discredit

  717. the apostles'

  718. message of the

  719. resurrection

  720. of Jesus.

  721. Nowhere do they

  722. say,

  723. oh,

  724. if Jesus rose,

  725. show us the

  726. body.

  727. Where's the

  728. body?

  729. Where is he now?

  730. They know where

  731. do they attempt

  732. to discredit the

  733. message,

  734. even though they

  735. knew that message

  736. was central to

  737. their gospel.

  738. Why?

  739. Because it's not

  740. the truthfulness

  741. of the message

  742. that they're worried

  743. about,

  744. it's what's going

  745. to happen to

  746. their power,

  747. what's happening

  748. to them.

  749. It's not the

  750. truthfulness of the

  751. gospel that's

  752. threatening them,

  753. it's their own

  754. insecurity and

  755. their fear

  756. that's got them

  757. riled.

  758. One of the things

  759. that I saw in this

  760. passage for the

  761. very first time

  762. this week,

  763. I've never seen

  764. it before actually,

  765. is that the

  766. people in this

  767. passage that

  768. actually hold all

  769. of the power,

  770. all of the

  771. authority,

  772. both political

  773. power and social

  774. power and military

  775. power,

  776. the people that

  777. hold all the

  778. power are those

  779. that are most

  780. afraid.

  781. and conversely,

  782. those that hold

  783. no social power

  784. whatsoever,

  785. verse 13,

  786. Luke describes,

  787. they describe these

  788. men as common

  789. uneducated men,

  790. fishermen turned

  791. preachers,

  792. those who hold

  793. no power whatsoever

  794. are fearless and

  795. bold and courageous.

  796. And that doesn't

  797. make any sense,

  798. right?

  799. You think the

  800. people that hold

  801. all the power and

  802. the authority,

  803. they've got the

  804. money,

  805. they've got the

  806. social power,

  807. they've got the

  808. military,

  809. they should be the

  810. ones that are not

  811. afraid and they're

  812. deeply afraid.

  813. And these guys

  814. that hold no

  815. power whatsoever

  816. are bold and

  817. courageous.

  818. Why?

  819. Why?

  820. Friends,

  821. one of the things

  822. that the Bible

  823. tells us again and

  824. again is that it's

  825. not your circumstances

  826. that gives you

  827. peace,

  828. it's not your

  829. circumstances that

  830. gives you joy or

  831. confidence or rest,

  832. it's something else.

  833. Your circumstances

  834. can be falling apart

  835. and yet you can live

  836. with joy and peace

  837. and rest.

  838. And conversely,

  839. you can have all

  840. the power and all

  841. the authority and all

  842. the money in the

  843. world and yet be

  844. deeply insecure,

  845. deeply afraid,

  846. deeply unrested.

  847. Now,

  848. friends,

  849. what does this

  850. tell us?

  851. One of the things

  852. that the scriptures

  853. tell us again and

  854. again is that in

  855. most circumstances,

  856. the thing that

  857. causes us the

  858. greatest fear,

  859. the greatest angst

  860. in our heart is

  861. the thing that is

  862. most precious to

  863. us.

  864. The thing that we

  865. attach our value to,

  866. the thing we

  867. attach our self-worth

  868. to,

  869. the thing that in a

  870. sense,

  871. we feel like we

  872. cannot live without.

  873. The thing that is a

  874. good thing that has

  875. become almost like God

  876. in our hearts.

  877. And the idea of

  878. losing this thing

  879. causes our hearts

  880. such fear and

  881. anxiety and angst

  882. in our hearts that

  883. it causes us to act

  884. and behave and to

  885. say things that

  886. normally we'd never

  887. think we're possible

  888. to say or do.

  889. And the Bible

  890. shows us that what

  891. is most precious to

  892. us actually has a

  893. power over our

  894. lives, a crippling

  895. power, a destructive

  896. power, a power to

  897. control our behavior

  898. and our relationships.

  899. And what we fear,

  900. we give immense power

  901. to and power that

  902. often is destructive

  903. and harmful.

  904. And so the crippling

  905. power of fear and

  906. anxiety in our lives.

  907. But this passage also

  908. shows us secondly,

  909. the compelling power of

  910. faith and conviction.

  911. friends, what is our

  912. greatest nightmare?

  913. Losing the one thing

  914. that we believe we

  915. cannot live without.

  916. But here the gospel

  917. comes with great good

  918. news.

  919. Because the gospel

  920. tells us that Jesus

  921. Christ promises us

  922. that the one thing

  923. that matters most in

  924. the world, the one

  925. thing that we need

  926. more than anything

  927. else in the world,

  928. the only thing that

  929. can give us real

  930. security and real

  931. peace and real joy

  932. and real hope and

  933. boldness and

  934. confidence is

  935. something that can

  936. actually never be

  937. taken away from us,

  938. can never be

  939. devalued, never be

  940. spoiled, never be

  941. destroyed.

  942. It's something that

  943. inflation and

  944. tariffs and markets

  945. fluctuation and

  946. inflation and these

  947. things can never

  948. touch.

  949. And that is who

  950. Jesus Christ is,

  951. what he's done on

  952. the cross by dying

  953. and rising again,

  954. and who you are

  955. if you are in

  956. Christ.

  957. Jesus says that who

  958. he is and what he's

  959. done on the cross and

  960. who you are, your

  961. true identity, your

  962. true security can

  963. never be touched or

  964. devalued or diminished

  965. or subject to

  966. inflation or anything

  967. else.

  968. The resurrection of

  969. Jesus from the dead,

  970. despite everything that

  971. the authorities try to

  972. throw at Jesus,

  973. including being nailed

  974. to a Roman cross,

  975. the resurrection

  976. guarantees that what

  977. he offers is truly

  978. unshakable, unbendable,

  979. undestroyable, and

  980. therefore rock solid.

  981. And look at how this

  982. plays out in the life

  983. of these disciples,

  984. these apostles.

  985. It's this rock solid

  986. confidence in the

  987. unrivaled supremacy of

  988. Jesus that causes

  989. Peter and the

  990. apostles to speak with

  991. such boldness, such

  992. confidence.

  993. Look at what they say

  994. in verse 8 here.

  995. It says,

  996. Then Peter, filled

  997. with the Holy Spirit,

  998. said to them,

  999. Rulers of the people

1000. and elders, let it be

1001. known to all of you

1002. and to all the people

1003. of Israel, that by the

  1004. name of Jesus Christ

  1005. of Nazareth, this man

  1006. whom you crucified,

  1007. whom God raised up

1008. from the dead, by him

  1009. this man is standing

  1010. before you well.

  1011. And then Peter quotes

  1012. Psalm 118.

  1013. He says,

  1014. This Jesus is the

  1015. stone that was

  1016. rejected by you, the

  1017. builders, which has

  1018. become the cornerstone.

  1019. And there is salvation

1020. in no one else, for

  1021. no other name under

  1022. heaven given among

1023. men by which we must

  1024. be saved.

  1025. And the leaders get

  1026. all threatening and

  1027. intimidating and

  1028. they threaten them.

  1029. Look at verse 19.

  1030. Peter says,

  1031. Whether it's right in

1032. the sight of God to

  1033. listen to you rather

  1034. than God, you judge,

  1035. but we cannot but

1036. speak of what we have

  1037. seen and heard.

  1038. Friends, just a few

  1039. weeks, these very

  1040. people in the council

  1041. have sent Jesus to

  1042. the cross.

  1043. And Peter, with

  1044. unbelievable boldness

  1045. and confidence, can

1046. look them in the eye

  1047. and say, you

  1048. crucified him, but

  1049. that changes nothing.

1050. And you can crucify us,

  1051. you can threaten us,

1052. you can send us to the

  1053. Roman cross as well.

1054. We cannot but speak of

  1055. what we've seen and

1056. heard and known to be

  1057. true.

  1058. And Luke's point here

1059. is that it's not the

  1060. boldness and the

  1061. authority and the

  1062. extroverted temperament

1063. of these men, it's the

  1064. conviction that they

  1065. hold because they know

  1066. who Jesus is.

  1067. These common uneducated

  1068. men have discovered the

  1069. compelling power of

  1070. faith in Christ.

  1071. But in this passage,

  1072. there's something in

  1073. particular that Luke and

1074. the apostles see, and I

1075. want us to see it here.

  1076. There's something in

  1077. particular that leads to

  1078. their boldness and the

  1079. authority.

  1080. It's not just their

  1081. faith in general, it's

  1082. something in particular

1083. that they've come to see

  1084. in the scriptures that's

  1085. led them to this

  1086. confidence.

1087. And to see that, look at

  1088. the two Old Testament

  1089. quotes that they quote

  1090. here.

  1091. The apostles here quote

  1092. two Psalms, firstly

  1093. Psalm 118 and then

  1094. Psalm chapter 2.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

1095. And look at what Peter

  1096. says here in verse 11, I

  1097. read it earlier, Peter

1098. says this, this Jesus is

  1099. the stone that was

  1100. rejected by you the

  1101. builders that has

  1102. become the chief

  1103. cornerstone.

  1104. Peter here is quoting

  1105. Psalm 118 and Psalm

  1106. 118 is this amazingly

  1107. confident Psalm.

  1108. It's a Psalm about the

1109. fact that the person who

1110. trusts in the Lord will

  1111. prevail despite the

  1112. difficulties and the

  1113. hardships in life.

1114. And let me read a couple

  1115. of verses to us.

1116. This is what Psalm 118

  1117. says.

1118. Out of my distress, I

  1119. called to the Lord.

1120. The Lord answered me and

  1121. set me free.

1122. The Lord is on my

  1123. side.

  1124. I shall not fear.

1125. What can man do to me?

1126. The Lord is on my side.

1127. I shall look and triumph

1128. on those who hate me.

1129. It is better to take

1130. refuge in the Lord than

  1131. to trust in man.

1132. Better to take refuge in

1133. the Lord than trust in

  1134. even princes.

1135. And on and on it goes

1136. about my confidence is in

  1137. God, not man.

  1138. And then verse 22.

  1139. The stone that the

  1140. builders rejected has

  1141. become the cornerstone.

  1142. It's a great picture,

  1143. isn't it?

  1144. I don't know.

1145. I'm sure many of us

  1146. know the statue of

  1147. David, Michelangelo's

  1148. statue of David in

  1149. Florence of Italy.

  1150. Some people might have

1151. just to go visit that a

  1152. few weeks ago.

1153. The statue of David is

  1154. probably the greatest

  1155. statue ever sculpted by

  1156. human hands, right?

  1157. I mean, it's just

  1158. mind-blowingly remarkable.

  1159. But I'm not sure.

1160. I'm sure many of you

  1161. know this.

  1162. The piece of marble

  1163. that Michelangelo used to

  1164. sculpture that statue was

  1165. actually rejected and

  1166. despised by many master

  1167. sculptors of his day.

  1168. And so sculptors like

  1169. Donatella and other

  1170. famous master sculptors

1171. had all tried to work on

1172. this piece of marble and

  1173. had rejected it,

  1174. describing it as

  1175. mediocre and

  1176. unworkable.

1177. And so after three or

  1178. four master sculptors had

1179. tried to work on this, it

  1180. was eventually discarded

1181. and left in a yard for

1182. 25 years as something for

  1183. kind of amateurs to

  1184. practice on.

  1185. And then one day

  1186. Michelangelo finds this

  1187. piece of marble and

1188. says, I will try and

  1189. bring something out of

  1190. it.

  1191. And he does.

  1192. And he carves the

  1193. greatest sculpture the

  1194. world has ever seen,

  1195. right?

  1196. It's still standing today

  1197. hundreds of years later.

  1198. What an amazing picture

1199. of the stone that is

  1200. rejected and despised and

  1201. yet something remarkable

1202. has come out of it.

  1203. And that's the imagery

  1204. that Peter is quoting

  1205. out of Psalm 118.

  1206. He's saying, Jesus is

  1207. like the stone that

  1208. you, the authorities,

  1209. you rejected, you

  1210. despised him, you

  1211. thought he's nothing

  1212. worthwhile, he's a

  1213. trouble causer, and you

1214. try to get rid of him.

1215. You try to kill him and

1216. then throw him in the

  1217. yard.

  1218. But this rejected piece

  1219. of stone has become

  1220. the cornerstone, the

  1221. foundation stone upon

  1222. which God is building

  1223. his kingdom.

  1224. This is Jesus.

1225. He's the one that you

  1226. crucified.

1227. You try to get rid of

  1228. him.

  1229. You think he's a

  1230. nothing and a nobody,

  1231. but nothing, nothing,

  1232. not the authorities,

  1233. nothing in this world

  1234. will stop God's plans

  1235. and purposes.

  1236. For this despised and

  1237. rejected stone is the

  1238. foundation upon which

  1239. God's entire kingdom is

  1240. going to be built.

1241. And then look at what

  1242. Peter does.

1243. He says the same thing

  1244. in verse 25.

  1245. These guys are arrested

  1246. and they are then

  1247. released and they go

  1248. back to their friends

1249. and they pray and they

  1250. quote Psalm 2.

1251. And Psalm 2 is this

  1252. amazing Psalm about the

1253. fact that God is a king

1254. that he's going to anoint

1255. and put on the throne.

  1256. But the nations around

1257. him don't like this king.

1258. They don't want him on

  1259. the throne.

1260. And so they come together

  1261. and they have a

  1262. consultation about how

1263. they can get rid of

  1264. this king.

1265. Look at what Psalm 2

  1266. says.

  1267. Why did the Gentiles

  1268. rage and the people

  1269. plot in vain?

1270. The kings of the earth

  1271. set themselves together.

  1272. The rulers gathered

  1273. together against the

  1274. Lord and against his

  1275. anointed.

  1276. This king that's going

1277. to be on the throne,

  1278. the other kings gather

1279. and say how can we get

  1280. rid of this king?

1281. Well Psalm 2 goes on

1282. to say he who sits in

  1283. the heavens laughs.

  1284. He laughs at the

  1285. futile intent.

1286. So I was trying to

  1287. stop his son being

  1288. crowned king and Lord

  1289. of all.

1290. The Lord is on the

  1291. throne.

  1292. He holds them in

  1293. derision.

  1294. Friends, this is Jesus.

1295. And Peter says this is

  1296. who Jesus is.

  1297. He's the king.

  1298. He's despised.

  1299. He's rejected.

1300. But he's the Lord who

1301. will conquer and rule and

  1302. reign forever.

  1303. Ever and ever of

  1304. all opposition.

  1305. This was their

  1306. conviction.

  1307. That these apostles know

1308. how the story is going

  1309. to end.

  1310. Yes, you killed Jesus,

1311. but it didn't stop him.

  1312. And these apostles know

  1313. that nothing, that they

  1314. can arrest them, they

  1315. can persecute them, they

  1316. can terrorize them, they

  1317. can even take their

  1318. lives.

1319. And that won't stop the

  1320. plans and purposes of

  1321. God.

1322. That the gospel will go

  1323. out.

  1324. That Jesus will be

  1325. exalted.

1326. That God is going to

  1327. bring about a new

  1328. creation where all evil

  1329. and wickedness will be

  1330. banished.

1331. And those who know him

  1332. will be saved because

1333. they've come to trust in

  1334. Jesus.

1335. And they know how the

  1336. story ends.

  1337. And because of that

  1338. conviction, they have

  1339. immense power, immense

1340. authority to stand up to

  1341. these leaders and say,

1342. throw at us what you

  1343. will.

1344. We will not back down

1345. because you will die and

1346. we will live forever and

  1347. ever and ever.

  1348. Friends, the compelling

  1349. power of faith and

  1350. conviction.

1351. And in a sense, the

  1352. disciples know that what

  1353. happens to Jesus must

  1354. happen to them.

1355. That for Jesus, the road

1356. to glory is paved with

  1357. persecution and

  1358. opposition.

  1359. The cobblestones on the

1360. way to glory are stones

  1361. of opposition and

  1362. persecution.

  1363. But the disciples know

1364. that the same road that

1365. Jesus walked is the same

1366. road that they're going to

  1367. have to walk.

  1368. And since they're not

  1369. surprised, they say, you

1370. did this to Jesus, you can

  1371. do it to us.

1372. But we know where this

  1373. road ends.

  1374. It ends in glory.

  1375. Friends, where does your

  1376. ultimate hope lie?

1377. To what have you pinned

  1378. your hopes, your confidence,

  1379. your joy, your security,

  1380. your peace?

1381. Friends, how stable is that

  1382. hope?

1383. Friends, what comes out of

1384. us when that hope is

  1385. threatened?

  1386. When our security is

  1387. challenged?

  1388. When our authority is

  1389. challenged?

1390. How do we respond when

  1391. somebody threatens our joy,

  1392. our peace, our security?

1393. Are we like the religious

  1394. leaders, full of anger,

1395. full of threats, full of

  1396. fear?

1397. Or has the compelling power

1398. of Jesus Christ in the

  1399. gospel produced a

  1400. confidence, a faith, a joy

  1401. in our hearts?

1402. You know, towards the end

  1403. of Peter's life, when he's

1404. an old man, he writes these

1405. two letters to the church.

1406. And in his first letter in

  1407. the New Testament, it's

1408. just called the letter of

  1409. one Peter.

1410. But he's an older man now

1411. and he writes to these

  1412. Christians that are really

  1413. suffering.

  1414. They're going through a

  1415. very, very difficult time.

1416. And he writes them and he

1417. says, he reminds them that

  1418. because of the resurrection

1419. of Jesus, they have been

  1420. baptized or immersed into

1421. what he calls a living hope.

  1422. Such a great description.

  1423. It's not a vague hope that's

  1424. somewhere down there.

  1425. It's not a dead hope.

  1426. It's a living hope.

1427. I hope that he says, cannot

  1428. perish, spoil, or fade.

  1429. I hope that it's kept rock

1430. solid secure in heaven for

  1431. you.

1432. It's like the picture of the

  1433. Swiss bank vaults, right?

  1434. Nobody's going to touch

  1435. them.

1436. He says, your hope is like

1437. those Swiss bank vaults, but

  1438. it's kept in heaven.

1439. Nobody's going to touch it.

1440. And then he says, now you're

  1441. going through suffering and

1442. your suffering is like a

  1443. refiner's fire.

1444. It's taking your faith and

1445. it's refining it like gold in

  1446. the furnace.

1447. But this suffering, because of

1448. your hope in heaven is going

1449. to lead to praise and glory

  1450. and inexpressible joy.

  1451. Oh my goodness.

  1452. Inexpressible joy in the

  1453. midst of suffering.

1454. Where do you find that?

1455. Peter says, because of your

1456. hope in the resurrection of

  1457. Jesus.

  1458. Inexpressible joy, compelling

1459. power of faith in the

  1460. resurrection of Jesus.

  1461. Friends, if you're a follower

1462. of Jesus, you have every reason

  1463. for great confidence, great

1464. remarkable peace, even joy, even

1465. in the midst of suffering.

1466. For the God who called you, who

1467. gave you his spirit, who we've

1468. come to worship this morning, is

1469. not dead, but he's alive.

  1470. And he's sovereign over

  1471. everything and everyone.

1472. And he will be victorious in the

1473. end, no matter what the world

1474. throws at him, no matter what the

  1475. world throws at you.

1476. So, what should we do?

1477. You know, friends, this week,

1478. something is going to happen

1479. that's going to cause fear and

1480. anxiety in each one of our

  1481. hearts.

1482. Each one of us this week are

1483. going to face something that's

1484. going to make us a heart rate

  1485. rise, right?

1486. Something is going to cause us to

  1487. feel slightly threatened.

  1488. How should we respond?

1489. Maybe you get a bad medical

  1490. report.

1491. Maybe something happens at work.

1492. Maybe it's the headlines or you

1493. get a phone call from a family

  1494. member.

1495. Something's going to challenge us

  1496. this week.

  1497. How do we respond?

1498. Well, lastly, how do we grow in

  1499. faith?

1500. In this passage, we see something

1501. that Peter and the apostles do

  1502. that really helps us.

  1503. Something very practical that

1504. helps us grow in faith.

1505. On the surface, it looks like

  1506. they pray.

1507. They turn to God in prayer.

1508. And that is a good thing, right?

  1509. We should all pray.

1510. But every Christian knows we

  1511. should grow in prayer.

  1512. Yes, yes, I know.

  1513. I should pray more.

  1514. You should pray more.

  1515. We know that.

1516. But in this passage, there's

  1517. something very particular that

1518. the apostles do that if you've

1519. taken any of the CCF courses or

  1520. you're familiar with Paul Tripp's

1521. writings or David Powlison, you

1522. should notice something that they

  1523. do here, right?

1524. David Powlison was an amazing,

  1525. amazing Christian counselor.

1526. And one of the things that he says

1527. is when the heat of life comes,

1528. when life really heats up, when the

1529. stuff of life comes to us, there's a

1530. question that we all need to ask

  1531. ourselves.

  1532. I mean, there's a couple of

  1533. questions.

1534. One of the questions is why is my

1535. heart responding the way it is?

1536. Why am I feeling the way I am?

1537. But there's one question in

  1538. particular that's very, very

  1539. important.

1540. And the question is this.

  1541. Who is God?

1542. And in particular, who is God as it

1543. relates to this situation I'm

  1544. facing, right?

  1545. I'm feeling unloved.

  1546. Who is God?

1547. God is the one who promises his

1548. love will never cease, never fail.

  1549. I'm feeling, I'm feeling, what else

  1550. do we feel?

1551. I'm feeling like uncertain about the

  1552. future.

  1553. Who is God?

1554. He's the one who knows all things

1555. and omniscient about every single

1556. thing, all the features in his

  1557. hands.

1558. When the heat of life gets turned up,

1559. we must ask ourselves the question,

1560. who is God as it relates to the fear,

1561. the anxiety, the worry, the sadness,

  1562. the joy, the hope.

1563. Who is God as it relates to what I'm

  1564. going through?

1565. Well, look at what the apostles do

  1566. here in verse 23.

1567. Look at how they tell themselves who

  1568. God is.

1569. How they answer this question.

  1570. Verse 23 says this,

1571. When they were released, they went to

1572. their friends and reported what the

1573. chief priests and the elders had said

  1574. to them.

1575. And when they heard it, they lifted up

1576. their voices to God and said,

1577. Sovereign Lord, you who made the

1578. heaven and the earth and the sea and

  1579. everything in it.

1580. And then they quote Psalm 2 about the

1581. nations raging and God being sovereign

  1582. over everything.

  1583. It says,

1584. They were filled with the spirit and they

1585. continued to speak the word of God with

  1586. all boldness.

1587. Two things to know about this prayer.

1588. Firstly, nowhere do the prayers,

1589. nowhere do the disciples pray for an easy

  1590. time.

1591. Nowhere do they pray and say, God, please

  1592. just take it away.

  1593. Just make it easy.

1594. Just make our path smooth and play it

  1595. sailing.

1596. They never ask for an easy time.

1597. But secondly, look what they do do.

1598. They answer the question, who is God?

  1599. And who is he?

1600. Look at what they pray.

1601. He is the sovereign Lord.

1602. That means the one who is in total control

  1603. of everything, of everyone.

1604. He's control of Pontius Pilate.

1605. He was in control of Herod.

1606. He is in control of Judas Iscariot.

1607. He's control of the authorities now.

1608. He's control of the elders and the leaders

1609. that are arresting these guys and

1610. threatening them and trying to intimidate

  1611. them.

1612. He is Lord of everyone, including your

1613. boss and your colleague and your

1614. neighbor and your parents and your

  1615. children.

1616. He is Lord of everyone.

1617. The sovereign Lord of everything.

1618. He's not only Lord of everyone.

  1619. He's Lord of everything.

1620. Everything in all of history.

1621. Every atom that moves God is sovereign

1622. Lord over every minute thing in the

  1623. history of the world.

1624. Look at what he says here, including

1625. the death of Jesus upon the cross and

1626. the glorious resurrection of Jesus

  1627. from the grave.

  1628. Friends, who is God?

1629. He's the one who's in total control of

  1630. everyone and everything.

1631. Friends, what is our only hope in life

  1632. and death?

1633. That the risen Christ alone, who lived

1634. and died and rose again, is King and

1635. Lord over everyone and everything.

1636. See friends, what the apostles do here is

1637. they have this deep conviction and they

1638. remind themselves of this conviction in

1639. prayer that this is who God is.

1640. And because this is who God is, it gives

1641. them incredible power to face the

1642. difficulties that they are facing, to

1643. stare them down, to walk through the

1644. trials and the storms with immense

1645. courage and confidence and boldness.

1646. Friends, it's not the naturally bold or the

1647. courageous or the extroverted who discover

  1648. this confidence.

1649. It's those who irrespective of their

1650. personality type and know who God is

1651. and know how to remind themselves of who

1652. God is in prayer and worship and know

1653. how to find their confidence in him.

1654. Friends, this week, as we said, you and I

1655. are going to face a challenge.

  1656. No doubt about it.

1657. We're all going to be confronted with real

  1658. fears.

1659. How are we going to respond?

1660. Are you going to be controlled by the

1661. crippling power of fear and anxiety?

1662. Are you going to be enabled by the power of

1663. faith and confidence in God?

1664. Will we come to Jesus and remind ourselves

1665. of the gospel, remind ourselves of who he

1666. is and turn to him in prayer and trust that

1667. he who died and rose again is with us and

1668. that our faith is in him.

1669. Why don't we do that as we come to him now

  1670. in prayer?

  1671. Let's pray together.

1672. Oh, sovereign Lord, the one who is Lord of

1673. all, who made heaven and earth, the sea and

  1674. everything in it.

1675. You, Lord God, are king over everything and

  1676. everyone.

1677. And God, because you're king, we bow down and we

1678. surrender our lives to you.

1679. We don't want to be like the religious leaders

1680. who buckle and resist your authority.

1681. We want to receive you as king and Lord.

1682. Help us to do that now, I pray.

1683. God, help us this week in the midst of trials

  1684. and challenges and difficulties.

1685. Please give us your Holy Spirit.

1686. Help us to live full of faith and confidence.

1687. Lord, we need your spirit.

  1688. We need you.

1689. We need the sovereign God.

1690. And so I pray, God, give us your spirit and

1691. help us to walk in faith and confidence in you,

  1692. not in ourselves.

1693. In your great name we pray.

  1694. Amen.
