  1. The passage today comes from Acts chapter 2 verses 42 to 47.

    Acts 2:42–47

  2. ! This passage is picking up after the baptism of 3,000 people,

  3. ! after Peter gave an account of what Christ had done for them and also for us.

  4. So these new Christians devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship,

  5. to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.

  6. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

  7. And all who believed were together and had all things in common.

  8. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

  9. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes,

  10. they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.

  11. And the Lord added to their number, day by day, those who were being saved.

  12. This is God's word.

  13. God, as we just sang a few seconds ago, that you are majesty, the king of all kings,

  14. the one who is glorious and beautiful in all of your ways and in all of who you are.

  15. And God, in light of all that, when we think about our sin and our brokenness and our sin that's against you and our rebellion,

  16. God, it's such an incredible thought that you would come down in Christ Jesus and be with us

  17. and take our sins upon yourself, Jesus, to take our death, our shame upon you and die on that cross.

  18. God, when we do confession and assurance, God, we realize the incredible beauty and incredible grace that we have in you, Jesus.

  19. And we can't help but praise you and thank you with our hearts filled with gratitude and joy.

  20. So God, now as we listen to your word, through your spirit, would you come and stir our hearts?

  21. Would you stir our affections?

  22. Would you stir not just our heads and intellectuals, but our hearts to honor and glorify you?

  23. So Holy Spirit, would you come and be glorified?

  24. And in Jesus' name we pray.

  25. Amen.

  26. So, maybe I can start off with a question.

  27. Do you know which is the most popular international destination for the residents of Hong Kong?

  28. Japan.

  29. Or Japan, right?

  30. Okay, let me just see your hands.

  31. How many of you have been to Japan?

  32. Wow, that's incredible.

  33. Me and my wife, we, last week we went to Japan for the first time, believe it or not.

  34. First time, and we were there around the Mount Fuji area.

  35. And for those of you who know, yeah, that's my photography.

  36. For those of you who have been around this area, you know how incredible this sight is, isn't it?

  37. Just the way that it stands from miles and miles away, the way it slowly peaks up and surrounded by these little houses and roads and trees and forests.

  38. And all the way it goes up and there it is, standing all by itself, tall and majestic by itself.

  39. Now, imagine you come up to me and you say, all excited, and I ask you, Alan, how was Mount Fuji?

  40. You were expecting this wild and exciting feedback of my experience of Mount Fuji.

  41. And all I say is, yeah, it was fine.

  42. It was okay.

  43. It was just 3,800 meters tall.

  44. And, yeah, in fact, it looked like this huge pimple far away.

  45. That's it.

  46. Now, you would start wondering, did I even ever go to Mount Fuji?

  47. Or maybe some of you would feel indignant, right?

  48. It would be an insult to your experience of Mount Fuji or an insult to the glory of Mount Fuji.

  49. Because here's the thing, right?

  50. Deep down inside, all of us know that whenever we encounter something so majestic and so beautiful,

  51. it should always, in some ways, inspire in us an awe or wonder.

  52. And that is true when we talk about God, too.

  53. So what is it that happens when we encounter God who is infinitely more majestic,

  54. infinitely more glorious and more beautiful than the creation He created?

  55. And that's what we're going to look into today.

  56. So last week, we started this new series, which is going to go on for four weeks,

  57. to almost slow down and see what the early churches were like.

  58. Last week, we heard of how they were devoted to the teachings of the apostles,

  59. how the Word of God was central to the life of early church,

  60. how scriptures or the Word of God was not just information,

  61. but is the living and active Word of God.

  62. It's how God works through, and it's how we not just learn about Him,

  63. but also meet Him through His Word.

  64. But then what does that lead to?

  65. If God's Word is an input in ways to encounter the majestic, beautiful, and glorious God,

  66. then what is the output of it?

  67. What does it result in?

  68. What does it invoke in us?

  69. Well, the simple answer is worship.

  70. So today, what we're going to think about is,

  71. we're going to think about how the early church was a worshiping church,

  72. and how that should be shaping us as individuals,

  73. but most importantly, how that should be shaping us as a church,

  74. as a watermark church.

  75. So what does it look like to be a church that's worshiping?

  76. So today, we're going to look into it and think about it with three points.

  77. And the first one is this, to behold.

  78. Now, before we go any further,

  79. I think we can all agree that we should start off by defining the word worship.

  80. But the problem with that is,

  81. worship is a word that is actually quite difficult to define well.

  82. So what we're going to do is,

  83. we're going to go into God's Word and kind of observe

  84. how worship played itself out in the Scriptures.

  85. So let's look at Revelation 4.11.

  86. Here's a picture of 24 elders falling down and worshiping Him.

  87. They cast their crowns before the throne,

  88. and they all cry out, saying,

  89. Worthy are You, our Lord and God,

  90. to receive glory and honor and power.

  91. Why? For You created all things,

  92. and by Your will,

  93. they existed and were created.

  94. In the next chapter,

  95. thousands of angels, elders, and living creatures

  96. are gathered around the throne of Jesus Christ.

  97. And they all cry out again.

  98. They cry out,

  99. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,

  100. to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

  101. and honor and glory and blessing.

  102. And right after that,

  103. we hear all creation in heaven and in earth

  104. and under earth and over the sea,

  105. and basically everything that's created

  106. and everything,

  107. all creation cries out,

  108. to Him who sits on the throne

  109. and to the Lamb

  110. be blessing and honor

  111. and glory and might

  112. forever and ever.

  113. So what do we observe here?

  114. What do we see here?

  115. Well, the first thing we need to think about

  116. is the word worship

  117. comes from the word worth-ship.

  118. In other words,

  119. to worship something,

  120. or for instance right now,

  121. to worship God,

  122. means to ascribe the proper worth

  123. to Him,

  124. to magnify His worthiness of praise.

  125. Or as you see in these passages,

  126. to approach God

  127. and address God

  128. as He is worthy.

  129. I want us to notice

  130. a few things in these passages,

  131. that all creatures

  132. address God as worthy

  133. of so many things.

  134. But it's not just that, is it?

  135. They address God as worthy

  136. in light of all the things

  137. that God is

  138. and that God has done.

  139. So in light of all

  140. who God is

  141. and what He has done,

  142. they cry out worship.

  143. So they cry out worthy

  144. and worship Him.

  145. Now what this tells us

  146. is that worship

  147. happens in light of

  148. the revealed truth about God.

  149. You know, in a very similar way,

  150. the majestic and beautiful

  151. Mount Fuji

  152. calls us to spontaneously

  153. praise Mount Fuji

  154. and say,

  155. wow,

  156. seeing and understanding

  157. the beautiful

  158. and the worthiness of God

  159. evokes us in us

  160. a response

  161. in worship.

  162. See, in other words,

  163. there seems to be two elements

  164. to worship.

  165. Donald Whitney,

  166. in his book,

  167. Spiritual Disciplines

  168. for the Christian Life,

  169. he says this,

  170. he says,

  171. we cannot encounter

  172. the worthiness of God

  173. without the response

  174. of worship.

  175. So in a simple

  176. yet inadequate ways,

  177. worship can be defined

  178. as seeing the worthiness

  179. of God

  180. and responding to Him.

  181. To seeing the glories

  182. of God

  183. and responding

  184. to that beauty

  185. and glory.

  186. Now the question

  187. we gotta ask now

  188. is then,

  189. where is it

  190. that we see God?

  191. Where is it

  192. that we behold

  193. His glory

  194. and His majesty?

  195. Now obviously

  196. there are many ways

  197. we can do that,

  198. but the most primary

  199. and the most sure way

  200. and the most God-given way

  201. is found in His Word,

  202. in His Scriptures.

  203. I mean, yes,

  204. we can experience God

  205. and His glory

  206. when we look at creation,

  207. when we see a sunset

  208. and a sunrise

  209. and go,

  210. wow,

  211. God,

  212. you're incredible.

  213. Or when you hold

  214. a newborn baby

  215. in your arms

  216. for the first time

  217. and say,

  218. wow, God,

  219. you work wonders.

  220. But the reality is

  221. those things

  222. are still incomplete

  223. to capture

  224. the beauty of God.

  225. And it's only

  226. in His Word

  227. that we completely,

  228. well,

  229. not completely,

  230. in a more true

  231. and sure

  232. and deep way

  233. to encounter

  234. the majesty

  235. of His Word.

  236. Niels was sharing

  237. last week,

  238. it's in His Scriptures

  239. that we come face-to-face

  240. with who God is

  241. and what He has done.

  242. I mean,

  243. this is why we do

  244. the call to worship

  245. in the beginning

  246. of the service

  247. which Oscar did today.

  248. We don't do that

  249. just because

  250. it's a great idea.

  251. We do that

  252. because we're calling people

  253. to see who God is,

  254. what He has done,

  255. and in light of that

  256. sing songs of worship

  257. in response to Him

  258. through singing songs

  259. of worship to Him

  260. with rejoicing

  261. and with awe.

  262. And you see,

  263. there is a beauty

  264. in beholding God first

  265. when we worship Him.

  266. And one of the beauties

  267. is that when we do that,

  268. when we behold God,

  269. we come to know

  270. that there's an infinite supply

  271. of reasons

  272. to respond to God

  273. in worship.

  274. You see,

  275. because when we come to God,

  276. we'll find infinite reasons

  277. to respond to Him

  278. because He's a God

  279. of infinite glory,

  280. infinite majesty,

  281. infinite beauty.

  282. You see,

  283. God is not like Mount Fuji.

  284. After seeing a week,

  285. you get tired of it.

  286. After seeing it

  287. from different corners,

  288. you're going to be like

  289. the people that live

  290. around Mount Fuji.

  291. You wake up and He's there,

  292. yeah, that's Mount Fuji.

  293. God is not like that.

  294. You see,

  295. the creation

  296. and the beauty

  297. of this creation

  298. is finite.

  299. It does not have

  300. infinite beauty,

  301. but God does.

  302. God is the one

  303. with infinite glory

  304. and beauty.

  305. No wonder

  306. the living creatures

  307. around the throne

  308. worship Him

  309. day and night.

  310. They cry out to Him,

  311. worthy are you, God.

  312. When you think about that,

  313. that should invoke

  314. in us

  315. a longing

  316. to see God

  317. because,

  318. yes,

  319. we are on earth.

  320. Christ has not come yet

  321. and we see glimpses

  322. of this glory

  323. here on this earth.

  324. But one day,

  325. beloved brothers and sisters,

  326. we'll stand before

  327. this glorious

  328. and majesty God

  329. with infinite beauty

  330. and we'll behold it

  331. with our eyes.

  332. You see,

  333. there's this beauty

  334. in beholding God.

  335. But at the same time,

  336. there's also a danger

  337. when we don't behold

  338. the beauty of God

  339. or when we don't behold God

  340. in our worship.

  341. And the danger is that

  342. our worship,

  343. our response to Him

  344. might be out of line

  345. of who God actually is.

  346. Now imagine this.

  347. Imagine Oscar.

  348. I'm going to pick on you, Oscar.

  349. Imagine you come up to,

  350. someone comes up to Oscar

  351. and say,

  352. Oscar,

  353. I met your two boys.

  354. I can't believe

  355. they are six foot tall,

  356. they've got blonde hair

  357. and they play

  358. fantastic basketball.

  359. Man,

  360. they're awesome kids.

  361. Now obviously Oscar

  362. is going to say,

  363. hey man,

  364. thanks for the,

  365. hey man,

  366. that's what Oscar says.

  367. Hey man,

  368. thanks for the praise,

  369. thanks for the compliment,

  370. but my boys are

  371. not six foot tall,

  372. they're not blonde,

  373. they don't play basketball,

  374. they're just above my knees

  375. right now.

  376. Maybe you got the wrong guys.

  377. And sometimes we can do

  378. the same thing with God

  379. if we don't spend time

  380. beholding

  381. who He truly is.

  382. You see,

  383. in other words,

  384. worship starts

  385. with beholding

  386. God,

  387. seeing the infinite

  388. reasons

  389. to respond to Him,

  390. to seeing the truth

  391. about who truly He is

  392. and not come up

  393. with their own versions

  394. of who God is

  395. and understanding

  396. His worthiness

  397. of who He is

  398. and responding

  399. to that.

  400. So the first is this,

  401. to behold

  402. His majesty.

  403. But then,

  404. what's the output?

  405. How do we respond

  406. to that?

  407. So now let's see

  408. how the early churches

  409. did that,

  410. which leads us

  411. to our second point

  412. to respond.

  413. So let's look at

  414. Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  415. and see how the early church

  416. responded.

  417. In verse 43,

  418. you'll see that

  419. there seems to be

  420. an awe,

  421. or in other words,

  422. a fear,

  423. or reverence,

  424. or respect

  425. that came upon

  426. every soul.

  427. and he moved

  428. down a little bit

  429. to verse 46,

  430. and they're described

  431. as having glad

  432. and generous hearts.

  433. Or in other translations,

  434. it says,

  435. it was a joy

  436. that was unaffected.

  437. A joy,

  438. unaffected joy.

  439. And I think

  440. that's a very incredible

  441. thing to think about.

  442. Have you ever met

  443. a person

  444. who has a joy

  445. or happiness

  446. that's unaffected?

  447. that no one

  448. can affect

  449. or change

  450. or destroy

  451. his joy

  452. or happiness.

  453. It's very rare

  454. to see someone

  455. like that.

  456. And here

  457. is the early church

  458. that's being described

  459. as an unaffected

  460. joy.

  461. Now,

  462. we cannot deny

  463. the joy

  464. and the reverence

  465. and the awe

  466. that we see

  467. in the hearts

  468. of the early church

  469. as they respond

  470. to God.

  471. I mean,

  472. John Piper,

  473. when he talks about

  474. truth versus emotions,

  475. or in other words,

  476. beholding of who God is

  477. and responding

  478. with affections,

  479. this is what he says.

  480. He says,

  481. truth without emotions

  482. produces dead orthodoxy

  483. and a church full

  484. of artificial admirers.

  485. And he says,

  486. strong affections

  487. for God

  488. rooted in truth

  489. are the bone

  490. and marrow

  491. of a biblical worship.

  492. I mean,

  493. consider Psalm 100

  494. where David says,

  495. make a joyful noise

  496. to the Lord

  497. all the earth.

  498. Serve the Lord

  499. with gladness,

  500. come into his presence

  501. with singing.

  502. And the truth is

  503. because know that

  504. the Lord,

  505. he is God.

  506. It is he

  507. who has made us

  508. and we are his.

  509. We are his people

  510. and the sheep

  511. of his pasture.

  512. Again,

  513. enter his gates

  514. with thanksgiving

  515. and his courts

  516. with praise.

  517. Give thanks to him

  518. and bless his holy name.

  519. Why?

  520. Because for the God

  521. Lord is good

  522. and his steadfast love

  523. endures forever

  524. and his faithfulness

  525. to all generation.

  526. You see,

  527. joy

  528. or affections

  529. is a natural response

  530. to the greatness

  531. of God.

  532. I mean,

  533. it is one of the fruits

  534. of the Spirit.

  535. It is one of the fruits

  536. of the,

  537. when the Spirit

  538. indwells

  539. in us.

  540. it is almost like

  541. when you are standing

  542. in front of the church

  543. and you see your bride

  544. walking down the aisle.

  545. It just invokes

  546. a joy

  547. and an affection

  548. that one cannot

  549. really explain.

  550. You see,

  551. joy and affection

  552. is a natural response

  553. to who God is.

  554. But then,

  555. what if some of us

  556. are going through

  557. struggles?

  558. What if some of us

  559. are going through pain

  560. and suffering

  561. and affection

  562. seems to be

  563. difficult?

  564. Well,

  565. let's consider

  566. what Psalm 40

  567. has to say.

  568. You see,

  569. David is in trouble.

  570. He needs rescuing

  571. and in verse 1

  572. he says,

  573. I waited patiently

  574. for the Lord

  575. and he inclined to me

  576. and heard my cry.

  577. You see,

  578. if you are struggling

  579. and affection

  580. seems to be difficult,

  581. the reality is

  582. actually even

  583. wading through

  584. difficult time

  585. is a response.

  586. It's a response

  587. to the faithful God

  588. trusting that

  589. he will rescue you.

  590. I mean,

  591. verse 2 after that

  592. tells us that

  593. God does rescue David

  594. and verse 3

  595. he says,

  596. he put a new song

  597. in my mouth,

  598. a song of praise

  599. to our God.

  600. Isn't that incredible?

  601. Even in our suffering

  602. when we respond

  603. in patience

  604. and waiting,

  605. God puts a new song

  606. in our mouth,

  607. a song of praise.

  608. God bless you.

  609. But beloved

  610. brothers and sisters,

  611. there is a danger

  612. and something

  613. to think about

  614. in this.

  615. What if there is

  616. no affection,

  617. not even a desire,

  618. not even a remorse

  619. to have

  620. over the fact

  621. that we don't have

  622. affections for God?

  623. What if there is

  624. no regret

  625. over the joyless response

  626. to God in our lives?

  627. What if

  628. our faith journey

  629. has become mundane?

  630. There is no more joy,

  631. no more desire for joy,

  632. no more desire for God

  633. and we have

  634. somehow settled

  635. into a

  636. routine

  637. that is just

  638. joyless

  639. and

  640. gray.

  641. Well,

  642. if

  643. we are in that space

  644. that I think

  645. we should

  646. truly consider,

  647. reconsider

  648. our faith

  649. and our

  650. worship to God

  651. because worship

  652. is

  653. an affection-filled

  654. response,

  655. whether that is joy

  656. or a longing

  657. to have that joy

  658. to God

  659. in light of

  660. His infinite

  661. beauty and glory.

  662. And if that's

  663. where you are

  664. in your life,

  665. then you need

  666. to cry out to God.

  667. Maybe reach out

  668. to a CG leader

  669. or an elder

  670. or seek your

  671. fellow brothers

  672. and sisters

  673. for prayers.

  674. You see,

  675. in Acts 2,

  676. what we see is

  677. a church

  678. that responds

  679. with a joyful

  680. heart,

  681. an unaffected

  682. heart

  683. to God.

  684. But at the same

  685. time,

  686. it's also combined

  687. with an awe.

  688. It's also combined,

  689. the joy is combined

  690. with a reverence,

  691. isn't it?

  692. There's a sense

  693. of respect

  694. and honor

  695. towards God.

  696. God.

  697. Now,

  698. just this past

  699. week,

  700. I was talking

  701. with a youth

  702. who is struggling

  703. with a particular

  704. sin,

  705. and along our

  706. conversation,

  707. he says something

  708. along the line

  709. of this.

  710. He says,

  711. I want to honor

  712. God

  713. and not take

  714. His grace

  715. for granted.

  716. God

  717. and as we

  718. talked about it,

  719. we realized

  720. that he

  721. was so broken

  722. over his

  723. desire

  724. for the sin,

  725. which was more

  726. than his desire

  727. for God.

  728. And I found

  729. that incredible

  730. because we live

  731. in a culture

  732. where we care

  733. more about

  734. what offends

  735. us than

  736. what offends

  737. God.

  738. than what

  739. God wants.

  740. And here

  741. is a youth

  742. that had a

  743. desire to

  744. honor God

  745. over his

  746. sin

  747. and over

  748. his desire.

  749. You see,

  750. worship is

  751. a response

  752. with joy

  753. and affections,

  754. but it's also

  755. a response

  756. with reverence

  757. because it is

  758. a response

  759. to God

  760. who is the

  761. king of all

  762. kings,

  763. the creator

  764. of all things,

  765. the one

  766. who is outside

  767. of time,

  768. the alpha

  769. and the omega,

  770. the beginning

  771. and the end.

  772. This is the

  773. God that we

  774. are responding

  775. to.

  776. You see,

  777. worship also

  778. comes from

  779. another Greek

  780. word,

  781. which means

  782. to bow

  783. down,

  784. to fall

  785. down,

  786. to lay

  787. prostrate

  788. before someone.

  789. And that's

  790. another meaning

  791. of worship.

  792. you see,

  793. which means

  794. that this

  795. calls us

  796. to really

  797. consider

  798. our lives

  799. that goes

  800. beyond what

  801. happens within

  802. this hall.

  803. You see,

  804. we can joyfully

  805. respond to God,

  806. serve in

  807. multiple ministries,

  808. raise our hand

  809. and jump

  810. while singing,

  811. but our life

  812. could be lived

  813. in disobedience,

  814. a blatant

  815. dishonor

  816. to the king

  817. of kings.

  818. God

  819. is.

  820. So,

  821. therefore,

  822. worship,

  823. yes,

  824. it is a

  825. joyful response

  826. to who God

  827. is,

  828. but it's

  829. also a

  830. reverent

  831. fear and

  832. awe response

  833. to who God

  834. is.

  835. so far,

  836. what we have

  837. thought about

  838. is worship

  839. is a

  840. response

  841. to the

  842. glory of

  843. God,

  844. but it's

  845. also a

  846. response

  847. with joy

  848. and reverent.

  849. Now,

  850. what does that

  851. look like?

  852. What does it

  853. look like

  854. as individuals,

  855. but what does it

  856. look like

  857. as a church?

  858. So,

  859. finally,

  860. let's look at

  861. that in terms

  862. of hands

  863. and hearts.

  864. Now,

  865. to say it

  866. in a very

  867. simple terms,

  868. all of our

  869. lives are

  870. meant to be

  871. worship,

  872. isn't it?

  873. In fact,

  874. we were

  875. created to

  876. worship God.

  877. Isaiah 43

  878. says,

  879. bring all the

  880. sons and

  881. daughters to

  882. me,

  883. everyone who

  884. is called

  885. by my name,

  886. everyone whom

  887. I created

  888. for my

  889. glory.

  890. This means

  891. that everything

  892. we do

  893. should be

  894. worship,

  895. worship,

  896. which means

  897. that whether

  898. it's tithing

  899. or singing

  900. or parenting

  901. or working

  902. or studying

  903. or listening,

  904. in other words,

  905. everything should

  906. be worship,

  907. which is part

  908. of the reason

  909. why here at

  910. Watermark we

  911. call everything

  912. worship,

  913. right?

  914. Worship in

  915. benediction,

  916. worship in

  917. greetings,

  918. worship in

  919. sermon,

  920. and worship

  921. in response

  922. to God.

  923. Everything

  924. is,

  925. should be

  926. part of

  927. worship.

  928. By the same

  929. time,

  930. everything we

  931. do outside

  932. of church

  933. is also,

  934. should be

  935. worship.

  936. Now,

  937. consider Romans

  938. 12,

  939. where Paul

  940. says,

  941. I appeal

  942. to you,

  943. therefore,

  944. brothers,

  945. by the

  946. mercies of

  947. God,

  948. to present

  949. your bodies,

  950. all that you

  951. do or all

  952. that you

  953. have or

  954. everything you

  955. are,

  956. as a living

  957. sacrifice,

  958. holy and

  959. acceptable to

  960. God,

  961. which is

  962. your spiritual

  963. worship.

  964. Now,

  965. to apply

  966. what you've

  967. just heard

  968. in the first

  969. two points,

  970. this means

  971. that all

  972. of our

  973. life should

  974. be an

  975. affectionate

  976. and reverent

  977. response to

  978. who God

  979. is and

  980. what he

  981. has done.

  982. Now,

  983. if some

  984. of you are

  985. hearing that,

  986. you're going

  987. to quickly

  988. realize that

  989. that is a

  990. very high

  991. standard.

  992. Because we

  993. all know

  994. that that is

  995. not always

  996. true,

  997. is it?

  998. sometimes we

  999. worship through

  1000. tithing,

  1001. not because

  1002. of who God

  1003. is,

  1004. which is that

  1005. he's a

  1006. generous God

  1007. and he did

  1008. not even hold

  1009. back his son

  1010. Christ Jesus

  1011. to pay the

  1012. price of our

  1013. sins.

  1014. Sometimes we

  1015. just tithe

  1016. because that's

  1017. what Christians

  1018. do.

  1019. You know,

  1020. sometimes we

  1021. can forgive

  1022. one another

  1023. because,

  1024. again,

  1025. that's what

  1026. Christians do

  1027. and we

  1028. got such

  1029. amazing

  1030. community

  1031. and I

  1032. want to

  1033. protect that.

  1034. But we

  1035. don't forgive

  1036. one another

  1037. because,

  1038. you know,

  1039. Christ has

  1040. forgiven us

  1041. first.

  1042. We don't

  1043. forgive one

  1044. another because

  1045. of the

  1046. incredible

  1047. news that

  1048. I am

  1049. forgiven

  1050. by Christ.

  1051. That our

  1052. sins that

  1053. were broken

  1054. and disgusting

  1055. and devastating

  1056. was forgiven

  1057. by God

  1058. because Christ

  1059. paid that

  1060. price.

  1061. You see,

  1062. we can do

  1063. a lot of

  1064. things,

  1065. a lot of

  1066. good things

  1067. like singing,

  1068. parenting,

  1069. working,

  1070. and we can

  1071. do a lot of

  1072. Christian things

  1073. without actually

  1074. worshiping God,

  1075. without actually

  1076. responding in

  1077. light of who

  1078. He is and

  1079. what He has

  1080. done.

  1081. because you

  1082. see,

  1083. God created

  1084. us to

  1085. worship and

  1086. in many ways

  1087. we are always

  1088. worshiping

  1089. something.

  1090. But the

  1091. brokenness in

  1092. us and the

  1093. sin in us

  1094. is that we

  1095. don't always

  1096. worship God

  1097. even when we

  1098. come into

  1099. church or do

  1100. Christian things.

  1101. Which then

  1102. tells us that

  1103. whether you're

  1104. a Christian or

  1105. whether you're

  1106. not this morning,

  1107. every problem

  1108. that we have,

  1109. every brokenness,

  1110. every sin that

  1111. we have is a

  1112. problem of

  1113. worship or in

  1114. other words is a

  1115. problem of

  1116. idolatry.

  1117. You see,

  1118. we modern people

  1119. might not bow

  1120. down to a

  1121. literal idol,

  1122. but we do bow

  1123. down to other

  1124. idols.

  1125. Like for example,

  1126. the idol of

  1127. money.

  1128. When we start

  1129. pursuing money

  1130. more than

  1131. anything,

  1132. when we start

  1133. using money

  1134. as a measure

  1135. of success

  1136. in ourselves

  1137. or in other

  1138. people.

  1139. And you see,

  1140. there are so

  1141. many idols

  1142. in life,

  1143. but idols are

  1144. not just out

  1145. there.

  1146. Idols are in

  1147. our hearts

  1148. to the point

  1149. where John

  1150. Calvin describes

  1151. the human heart

  1152. as an idol

  1153. factory.

  1154. The human

  1155. heart

  1156. continuously

  1157. produces

  1158. idols after

  1159. idols.

  1160. And the

  1161. thing about

  1162. idols is

  1163. that idols

  1164. always

  1165. requires or

  1166. demands

  1167. sacrifice.

  1168. You see,

  1169. for example,

  1170. for the idol

  1171. of money,

  1172. it demands

  1173. you sacrifice

  1174. time,

  1175. whether that's

  1176. your own

  1177. or time

  1178. that you

  1179. could have

  1180. given to

  1181. your loved

  1182. ones in

  1183. return,

  1184. only to

  1185. find out

  1186. that the

  1187. idol is

  1188. going to

  1189. just demand

  1190. more and

  1191. more of it

  1192. only to

  1193. not be

  1194. true to

  1195. its promise

  1196. of security,

  1197. success,

  1198. status,

  1199. satisfaction.

  1200. It is

  1201. going to

  1202. leave us

  1203. out to

  1204. dry.

  1205. And it's

  1206. true for

  1207. all kind

  1208. of idols.

  1209. The idol

  1210. of self,

  1211. the idol

  1212. of approval,

  1213. the idols

  1214. of health,

  1215. the idols

  1216. of comfort.

  1217. All these

  1218. things

  1219. demands

  1220. and demands

  1221. but it

  1222. never

  1223. fulfills

  1224. what it

  1225. promises.

  1226. But

  1227. beloved

  1228. church,

  1229. whether you

  1230. are Christians

  1231. or whether

  1232. you're not,

  1233. when we

  1234. come and

  1235. worship God,

  1236. we actually

  1237. come and

  1238. bring ourselves

  1239. to the

  1240. one who

  1241. actually first

  1242. himself

  1243. sacrificed

  1244. on our

  1245. behalf.

  1246. Yes,

  1247. like Romans

  1248. 12,

  1249. we come

  1250. before God

  1251. bringing all

  1252. of ourselves

  1253. as a living

  1254. sacrifice,

  1255. but he's

  1256. actually to

  1257. the one

  1258. who first

  1259. sacrificed

  1260. himself on

  1261. the cross,

  1262. taking the

  1263. penalty of

  1264. sin that

  1265. you and

  1266. I had to

  1267. pay,

  1268. taking the

  1269. shame that

  1270. we tried to

  1271. cover up

  1272. with leaves,

  1273. and taking

  1274. the death

  1275. that you

  1276. and I

  1277. had to

  1278. pay.

  1279. And him,

  1280. unlike other

  1281. idols,

  1282. he's the

  1283. faithful one,

  1284. who is the

  1285. faithful one,

  1286. who in return

  1287. we are not

  1288. left out to

  1289. dry hanging

  1290. like with

  1291. other idols,

  1292. but in

  1293. whom we

  1294. find true

  1295. life,

  1296. in whom we

  1297. find unshakable

  1298. joy,

  1299. unaffected

  1300. joy,

  1301. peace beyond

  1302. understanding,

  1303. life that

  1304. does not

  1305. end,

  1306. brokenness

  1307. that's healed,

  1308. relationship

  1309. that's healed,

  1310. restored,

  1311. and ultimately

  1312. our deepest

  1313. longings that

  1314. are satisfied.

  1315. So,

  1316. church,

  1317. what does

  1318. it mean to

  1319. be a

  1320. church that

  1321. is a

  1322. worshiping

  1323. church?

  1324. Well,

  1325. I think the

  1326. first step is

  1327. to come and

  1328. behold our

  1329. incredible,

  1330. majestic,

  1331. and glorious

  1332. God.

  1333. It's to come

  1334. before God

  1335. and see in

  1336. his scriptures,

  1337. in his truth,

  1338. the majesty

  1339. and his glory

  1340. who laid

  1341. down his

  1342. life and

  1343. who is risen

  1344. and his

  1345. return is

  1346. sure,

  1347. and to

  1348. respond to

  1349. him in

  1350. everything that

  1351. we do,

  1352. to have our

  1353. focus on

  1354. him,

  1355. to have our

  1356. hearts on

  1357. him,

  1358. to have our

  1359. eyes on

  1360. him,

  1361. whether that's

  1362. inside this

  1363. hall or

  1364. whether that's

  1365. out in your

  1366. work when

  1367. you're working

  1368. under a very

  1369. terrible and

  1370. a difficult

  1371. boss,

  1372. or when you're

  1373. struggling with

  1374. your relationships

  1375. or in your

  1376. marriage or

  1377. parenting,

  1378. or whether

  1379. you're finding

  1380. difficulty in

  1381. making decisions

  1382. about dating

  1383. or relationships

  1384. or big

  1385. decisions in

  1386. life.

  1387. In all of

  1388. these things,

  1389. having our

  1390. heart focused

  1391. on who

  1392. God is and

  1393. responding to

  1394. him with

  1395. joy and

  1396. reverence.

  1397. So what does

  1398. it mean to be

  1399. a worshiping

  1400. church?

  1401. It's a church

  1402. that beholds

  1403. God and

  1404. responds to

  1405. him in

  1406. everything that

  1407. we do with

  1408. joy and

  1409. reverence.

  1410. So let me

  1411. end before we

  1412. pray with a

  1413. story.

  1414. I don't know

  1415. how many of

  1416. you know

  1417. Eugene Peterson,

  1418. the guy who

  1419. wrote the

  1420. message version

  1421. of the

  1422. Bible.

  1423. He shares

  1424. the story

  1425. about where

  1426. he was quite

  1427. young and he

  1428. sent by his

  1429. church to

  1430. start a

  1431. church in

  1432. a suburban

  1433. area where

  1434. he goes,

  1435. he starts

  1436. knocking on

  1437. different doors

  1438. and after a

  1439. lot of labor,

  1440. he gathers

  1441. these people

  1442. and they

  1443. start a

  1444. church in

  1445. his basement

  1446. and after a

  1447. lot of hard

  1448. work within

  1449. two years,

  1450. they got

  1451. enough finance

  1452. to start a

  1453. church, to

  1454. build a

  1455. church and

  1456. have their

  1457. own place

  1458. of worship.

  1459. And Peterson

  1460. thinks, Eugene

  1461. thinks, yes,

  1462. finally we are

  1463. here, finally we

  1464. are established,

  1465. now we can

  1466. focus on

  1467. worshiping God,

  1468. missions and

  1469. evangelism and

  1470. discipleship.

  1471. But to his

  1472. shock, he

  1473. suddenly finds

  1474. out that the

  1475. numbers are

  1476. actually decreasing

  1477. the numbers

  1478. start shaking

  1479. and people

  1480. actually stop

  1481. coming, actually

  1482. those exact

  1483. people that

  1484. helped start

  1485. the church and

  1486. that confuses

  1487. him.

  1488. So what he

  1489. does is he

  1490. goes back to

  1491. the same

  1492. doors that he

  1493. knocked and

  1494. he starts asking

  1495. questions, what

  1496. happened?

  1497. And the

  1498. response that he

  1499. gets is, you

  1500. know, we had

  1501. this huge project,

  1502. we've done it,

  1503. now the work's

  1504. done, and we're

  1505. just looking for

  1506. the next new

  1507. project to do.

  1508. And suddenly

  1509. Eugene Peterson

  1510. realized that

  1511. the church that

  1512. was so vibrant

  1513. was actually

  1514. more focused on

  1515. accomplishing

  1516. projects and

  1517. finishing projects

  1518. than actually

  1519. worshiping God

  1520. and loving one

  1521. another.

  1522. You know, that

  1523. story does tell

  1524. us something as

  1525. we move to

  1526. Viva.

  1527. Because as we

  1528. move to Viva and

  1529. as we settle

  1530. down and

  1531. everything's done

  1532. and the TVs are

  1533. set up and the

  1534. music is set up

  1535. and the sound

  1536. is set up, we

  1537. can all give a

  1538. huge relief and

  1539. sigh like, ah,

  1540. that's it, we're

  1541. done.

  1542. And sit back and

  1543. look for the next

  1544. new project to do.

  1545. But church, we are

  1546. called to be the

  1547. worshiping church.

  1548. Even as we settle

  1549. in Viva or even

  1550. as we have these

  1551. new big projects,

  1552. we are called to

  1553. have our eyes to

  1554. behold who God

  1555. is and to worship

  1556. him in his glory

  1557. and to respond

  1558. to him in joy

  1559. and reverence.

  1560. So church, let us

  1561. strive to be a

  1562. worshiping church

  1563. always having our

  1564. eyes focused on

  1565. who he is and

  1566. glorifying him and

  1567. worshiping him,

  1568. not just with our

  1569. mouths, not just

  1570. with our bodies,

  1571. but with our

  1572. hearts that's filled

  1573. with joy and

  1574. reverence for our

  1575. God.

  1576. So why don't we

  1577. spend some time to

  1578. think about that

  1579. because ultimately

  1580. we cannot do that

  1581. by pushing or

  1582. forcing ourselves

  1583. and saying,

  1584. come on guys,

  1585. be joyful.

  1586. We cannot do that.

  1587. So why don't we

  1588. spend some time in

  1589. prayer asking the

  1590. spirit to come and

1591. do this work in us.

  1592. So let us spend

  1593. about 30 seconds or

  1594. a minute and I'll

  1595. come and lead us

  1596. in prayer.

  1597. so why don't we

  1598. know if we can

  1599. So why don't we

  1600. in prayer?

  1601. so why don't we

  1602. advance us

  1603. so why don't we

  1604. Yes,

  1605. so why don't we

  1606. advance us

  1607. Yes,

  1608. so why don't we

  1609. in prayer?

  1610. Yes,

  1611. advance us

  1612. so why don't we

  1613. advance us

  1614. so why don't we

  1615. advance us

  1616. in prayer?

  1617. Yes,

  1618. so why don't we

  1619. advance us

1620. Father, we need you, Lord.

1621. We need you to come and open our eyes to your majesty, to your glory, and to your beauty.

1622. Father, we confess that sometimes our hearts, our mouths might be singing out songs of praise,

1623. but our hearts are joyless and anxious about other things.

1624. Holy Spirit, would you come and stir our hearts and passions for you,

1625. not just to sing words or songs of worship and praise to you,

1626. but to live all of our lives in light of who you are, God,

1627. and the truth that one day we will witness and see with our own eyes

1628. this infinite glory and beauty that's seen by your people right now.

1629. God, we need you as a church.

1630. We need you as individuals.

1631. May our lives be a life of worship to you, God,

1632. a life of joy and reverence, all of who you are, God.

1633. So come, Holy Spirit, do this work in us for your glory and our good.

1634. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1635. Amen.
