  1. I'm going to invite Anne up, who's going to read scripture for us.

  2. She's going to read James chapter 1, verses 9 to 18.

    James 1:9–18

  3. These are the verses that Corey's going to teach from just shortly.

  4. ! Thank you, Anne.

  5. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation,

  6. and the rich in his humiliation,

  7. because like a flower of the grass he will pass away.

  8. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass,

  9. its flower falls and its beauty perishes.

  10. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

  11. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial,

  12. for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life,

  13. which God has promised to those who love him.

  14. Let no one say when he is tempted,

  15. I am being tempted by God,

  16. for God cannot be tempted with evil,

  17. and he himself tempts no one.

  18. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

  19. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin,

  20. and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

  21. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

  22. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,

  23. coming down from the Father of lights,

  24. with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

  25. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth,

  26. that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

  27. Amen.

  28. All right, well,

  29. I don't know if you've had the experience,

  30. I think I do know you have,

  31. that you go to bed on a weeknight too late,

  32. and then you get up too late the next morning,

  33. and your morning self hates your nighttime self for it.

  34. And then you can't find your keys,

  35. and then, or you go to the bus stop,

  36. and the bus never comes,

  37. despite the fact that the app said it was two minutes away.

  38. And then you get into work or uni,

  39. and you're frustrated, and you're flustered,

  40. and you get an email,

  41. and it says,

  42. we need to talk,

  43. and it's from your boss.

  44. It's the email I send to David Court every week.

  45. We need to talk now.

  46. And then the next day comes,

  47. and you get that unexpected bill.

  48. And the next day comes,

  49. and you get a ticket,

  50. because you drove in the bus lane.

  51. And then the next day comes,

  52. and your friend wants to talk,

  53. and poor,

  54. and addiction they're struggling with,

  55. into your life,

  56. and say,

  57. I need your help.

  58. And it's good,

  59. but it's a burden.

  60. And then you come,

  61. you drag yourself to church on a Sunday.

  62. After a hard week,

  63. and an ordinary week,

  64. and the text is James 1, verse 2,

    James 1:2

  65. that says,

  66. count it all joy,

  67. brothers and sisters,

  68. when you face trials of various kinds,

  69. big and small.

  70. Now, the week I just described

  71. is not martyrdom.

  72. It's not the persecution

  73. that the first century scattered church

  74. was facing,

  75. and the week I described

  76. was not a life-ending diagnosis.

  77. But sometimes those weeks do come as well.

  78. It was quite a normal week,

  79. quite an ordinary week,

  80. that we face.

  81. Various trials,

  82. big and small,

  83. James says.

  84. Count it joy when you face them,

  85. no matter what they are.

  86. So we saw last week

  87. that Christians meet trouble

  88. on ordinary roads.

  89. And just because you're a Christian,

  90. it doesn't mean

  91. that you're exempt from suffering.

  92. In fact,

  93. it's exactly the opposite.

  94. It's a guarantee

  95. that you will suffer.

  96. And we learned that

  97. when you're a follower of Jesus,

  98. you need an entire cognitive reframe

  99. of what suffering is.

  100. And James is telling us

  101. the reason suffering is so different,

  102. we receive it so different as believers,

  103. is because God can grow you

  104. and mature you in the midst of it.

  105. It has a completely different purpose

  106. than we normally think about suffering.

  107. And so he said,

  108. count it all joy.

  109. Consider it joy.

  110. Put the events of that week

  111. in the credit of joy

  112. instead of the debit of misery.

  113. It's a thinking term.

  114. It's a thinking command.

  115. And he says also

  116. that every single moment like that,

  117. the week I described,

  118. is a, quote,

  119. testing of your faith.

  120. It's a trial.

  121. That's a testing.

  122. And a testing is a smelting term.

  123. That's the Greek word that's chosen

  124. as one of the verbs

  125. for how you smelt precious metals.

  126. And so if you're going to smelt gold,

  127. you've got to stick gold into a furnace

  128. and heat it up

  129. to at least 1,064 degrees Celsius

  130. to smelt gold.

  131. And you do it in cycles,

  132. over and over again,

  133. pulling it out,

  134. sticking it back in the furnace.

  135. And the impurities fall away over time.

  136. And you move from 80% gold

  137. to 90% to 92, 93, 94,

  138. up to 98, 99% gold.

  139. That's as good as you can get.

  140. It's never perfect.

  141. And that's exactly what he means

  142. by reentering the furnace

  143. over and over again.

  144. You can become perfect.

  145. Not sinless, but whole.

  146. More and more mature.

  147. More and more Christ-like

  148. over time is the idea.

  149. And so today, we come back.

  150. He's talking about the same stuff

  151. in the passage we read.

  152. But today, he's getting more specific

  153. and saying,

  154. well, how does this work exactly?

  155. What does this mean

  156. in certain circumstances more precisely?

  157. So he's talking here

  158. about how to be blessed

  159. in the midst of reentering the furnace.

  160. Whether the bus,

  161. that's the bus doesn't come

  162. day after day

  163. or the life-ending diagnosis,

  164. you reenter the furnace

  165. big and small all the time.

  166. And how can you be blessed?

  167. How really can you?

  168. What does it look like practically?

  169. And you see that in verse 12.

  170. He said,

  171. blessed is the one

  172. who remains steadfast.

  173. You say,

  174. how could we be blessed in that?

  175. And so that's what he's answering

  176. for us today.

  177. Now, this is James,

  178. the biological brother

  179. of Jesus Christ,

  180. writing to the church,

  181. Jews and Gentiles,

  182. scattered all throughout

  183. the Roman Empire

  184. in the first century

  185. or all the empires

  186. of this world today to us.

  187. And he's going to teach you today

  188. in verses 9 to 18

  189. that you can be blessed

  190. in the midst of suffering

  191. when you will see

  192. that number one,

  193. suffering will strip away

  194. your idols.

  195. Number two,

  196. that suffering exposes

  197. your truest,

  198. greatest problem.

  199. And finally,

  200. your suffering will point you

  201. to the man

  202. who is the blessed one.

  203. All right, so first,

  204. let's think about that.

  205. Suffering,

  206. suffering can bring a blessing

  207. when you will allow it

  208. to strip your idols away.

  209. All right, so if you look down

  210. at verse 9,

  211. he says,

  212. let the lowly brother

  213. boast in his exaltation

  214. and the rich brother

  215. or sister in their humiliation.

  216. Now, it looks like James

  217. is switching topics here.

  218. Suffering, wisdom,

  219. and now rich people

  220. and poor people.

  221. But this is the same topic.

  222. He's still in the realm

  223. of talking about suffering.

  224. And we've already said

  225. just this morning

  226. that a trial for James,

  227. suffering is a test

  228. of your faith.

  229. And so what he's talking about

  230. when he brings up

  231. the poor,

  232. the lowly brother or sister,

  233. the lowly,

  234. the poor Christian

  235. or the rich Christian,

  236. he's saying that

  237. if you're poor,

  238. if you're a Christian

  239. and you're poor,

  240. you don't have money.

  241. If you're a Christian

  242. and you're rich

  243. and you've got a lot of wealth,

  244. you're still going to face

  245. the same problems.

  246. And that's suffering.

  247. But you come at them

  248. from different perspectives.

  249. He's drawing a difference

  250. of perspective there.

  251. Now, the first thing

  252. he says is to the lowly person.

  253. And the word for lowly here

  254. is not the most normal word

  255. for a poor person.

  256. So it would be different

  257. in English than saying

  258. the homeless

  259. or something like that.

  260. Instead, it's a word

  261. that's more closely associated

  262. with a person

  263. who has been humbled.

  264. And so it's more than economics.

  265. It's, you know,

  266. there's, as we grow older,

  267. I think we learn

  268. that there's lots of different ways

  269. to be wealthy.

  270. You know, you can have

  271. a lot of money,

  272. but you can have

  273. really poor friendships.

  274. And so there's lots of ways

  275. to be lowered,

  276. to be a lowly person.

  277. And I think the reason

  278. he uses this particular word

  279. is because,

  280. if you remember last week,

  281. he's talking to people

  282. who in the first century

  283. were scattered

  284. by persecution

  285. across the Roman Empire.

  286. And from Acts 8,

  287. Stephen was stoned to death,

  288. and then people dispersed.

  289. And if you were one

  290. of those Jewish Christians

  291. that got dispersed

  292. from Jerusalem,

  293. you ran,

  294. and you left behind friendship.

  295. You left behind your money.

  296. You left behind everything

  297. that you would call wealth

  298. in this life.

  299. You left behind

  300. market relationships.

  301. You know,

  302. you don't even have a source

  303. of generating a new business

  304. and living in Antioch

  305. or Corinth or Thessalonica.

  306. You don't have anything.

  307. And so he's talking

  308. to that lowly person

  309. who has lost it in life.

  310. All material wealth,

  311. friendship wealth,

  312. market wealth.

  313. And he's saying,

  314. you've entered

  315. into that station in life,

  316. and that is the trial.

  317. That is the test.

  318. And you've got to take it,

  319. and you've got to think

  320. of your exaltation.

  321. What is he talking about?

  322. He's explaining

  323. how exactly a person

  324. who doesn't have a lot

  325. in this life

  326. would consider it joy

  327. or count it joy.

  328. So he's saying

  329. to the lowly person,

  330. look, it'll be your temptation

  331. if you don't have a lot

  332. in this life,

  333. if you don't have a lot

  334. financially,

  335. if you don't have a lot

  336. in terms of relationship,

  337. whatever it may be,

  338. whatever lack of wealth,

  339. it will be your temptation

  340. to despair,

  341. to even say things like,

  342. God doesn't care about me.

  343. God doesn't value me.

  344. I've done everything I could,

  345. and God's left me where I am.

  346. And so God clearly

  347. doesn't care what I'm doing.

  348. And that'll be the temptation.

  349. And there's another temptation

  350. that you will face,

  351. and that's the same temptation

  352. that the rich face.

  353. And that's that you might say,

  354. if only I had economic wealth,

  355. if only I had

  356. these different types of wealth,

  357. then my life would be better,

  358. then everything would be okay.

  359. And so the poor person

  360. who's suffering

  361. is facing all sorts

  362. of temptations

  363. to think God hates them,

  364. even.

  365. And what he's saying

  366. is you've got to,

  367. how do you move

  368. that suffering

  369. from the ledger

  370. of debit to credit,

  371. of misery to joy,

  372. and you've got to consider

  373. your exaltation?

  374. What is he saying?

  375. He's saying you've got to realize

  376. that if you're a Christian

  377. and you don't have a lot

  378. in this life,

  379. that you are so united to Jesus

  380. that His glory is your glory.

  381. In other words,

  382. you've got to actually think

  383. about the fact

  384. that God sees you as exalted.

  385. You think God hates me

  386. in the midst of my lowliness,

  387. my suffering, my poverty.

  388. No, no, no.

  389. He's saying when you're a believer,

  390. you can suffer differently

  391. even when you're poor

  392. because you can say,

  393. inasmuch as Jesus Christ

  394. was exalted into the heavenly realm

  395. at His resurrection,

  396. so God the Father sees me

  397. like He sees Him.

  398. See, boast in your exaltation.

  399. Boast in the fact

  400. that you have glory

  401. because you're connected to Jesus.

  402. Be lifted up in that.

  403. Think about the next life.

  404. That's what he's saying.

  405. And this is striking something

  406. so hard for us

  407. as modern people

  408. because in our culture,

  409. in our moment,

  410. really since the time

  411. of the Enlightenment,

  412. we think we're tempted

  413. to secular materialism

  414. all the time,

  415. even as Christians,

  416. to think that way,

  417. to live in that framework.

  418. And when you live that way,

  419. you don't believe

  420. that there's a life to come.

  421. Not really.

  422. Not practically.

  423. And so if you are a person

  424. in this life

  425. who's a materialist

  426. and you lose all this stuff in life,

  427. you lose your economic wealth,

  428. you lose your friendship wealth,

  429. you lose relational wealth,

  430. you lose market possibility,

  431. business opportunity,

  432. you fail your degree,

  433. whatever it may be,

  434. you're left saying,

  435. I don't have anything left.

  436. I don't have a glory

  437. that is to come for me.

  438. And so you're living

  439. in this horizontal plane

  440. without any hope.

  441. And he's saying,

  442. but when you're a believer

  443. and you face suffering,

  444. you might lose everything

  445. and you can still say,

  446. I boast in the fact

  447. that I know

  448. I will be exalted.

  449. I have hope in the next life.

  450. So in other words,

  451. he's saying that the opportunity,

  452. the blessing,

  453. the blessing,

  454. even when you're poor,

  455. is that you're having

  456. your idol stripped away from you,

  457. even when you're poor.

  458. Because you're being told

  459. that there is a hope

  460. of everlasting life

  461. that's far greater

  462. and that's sharing

  463. in the glory of Jesus Christ.

  464. Now, I've got to move on.

  465. To the rich, he says,

  466. secondly,

  467. he gives more words to the rich,

  468. more clauses to the rich.

  469. Because when you're rich,

  470. it's far harder

  471. to have your idol stripped.

  472. It's far harder to let go.

  473. And you see,

  474. I think one of the reasons

  475. he chooses humiliation

  476. for the rich,

  477. exaltation for the poor,

  478. is he's saying,

  479. you're facing the same things,

  480. but you've got to think about it

  481. in opposite ways.

  482. And that means that

  483. suffering,

  484. when you suffer with Jesus,

  485. it almost lifts the poor

  486. to the same plane as the rich,

  487. and it lowers the rich down.

  488. See, it humbles the rich

  489. to be equal to the poor,

  490. and it raises the poor

  491. to be equal to the rich.

  492. Because you're all facing

  493. the same things.

  494. And so he turns to the rich here

  495. and he says,

  496. you know,

  497. the poor man or woman

  498. is going to be tempted

  499. to despair,

  500. to say,

  501. God hates me.

  502. I'm not a person of value.

  503. Nobody sees me in this life.

  504. You've got to think

  505. of your glory

  506. with Jesus.

  507. But the rich person

  508. is going to be far more tempted

  509. to hang on as tightly as possible

  510. to the pursuits

  511. that that person has pursued,

  512. to the things of this world,

  513. to get it back,

  514. to say,

  515. no,

  516. this is what completes me.

  517. I've got to have these things

  518. that I've built my life around.

  519. And so he's saying,

  520. you've got to consider it joy,

  521. count it joy,

  522. by thinking about the grace

  523. or the humiliation,

  524. the humbling

  525. that you're experiencing.

  526. You've got to think

  527. not about the glory

  528. that you're to receive

  529. because you've been living that life.

  530. You've already lived

  531. a life of glory.

  532. But you've got to thank God

  533. and say,

  534. here's how I can count it blessing

  535. because God is lowering me

  536. to remember

  537. that everything is grace.

  538. Everything is a gift.

  539. The rich man suffers,

  540. the rich woman suffers,

  541. and the gift of God in that

  542. is your humiliation.

  543. You're being humbled.

  544. You're having your idol

  545. stripped away from you.

  546. The poor person suffers

  547. and they're being lifted up

  548. and say,

  549. remember that you're sharing

  550. in the sufferings of Christ

  551. to share in the glory of Christ.

  552. You see how it goes

  553. two different ways

  554. to make an even plane

  555. right across the board.

  556. Now, the reason I think

  557. he's focused a little bit more

  558. on the rich here

  559. is because

  560. what's the biggest danger

  561. pretty much every one of us faces?

  562. So James is talking here

  563. to first century people

  564. who ran away from their homes.

  565. They're living as refugees.

  566. They don't have anything.

  567. That's none of us.

  568. We are the rich.

  569. Very few of us in here

  570. can say that we're the poor,

  571. really,

  572. when we talk about this.

  573. If we eat every day,

  574. we're the rich

  575. that James is talking about.

  576. So that's all of us,

  577. mostly in the modern Western world,

  578. mostly everyone sitting

  579. in this room today.

  580. And so the reason

  581. he focuses on us

  582. a little bit more

  583. is because the most dangerous

  584. place to be

  585. is to be wealthy,

  586. to have plenty of food,

  587. plenty of water,

  588. plenty of shelter,

  589. and to never have trouble.

  590. That's the most dangerous place to be,

  591. to be prosperous,

  592. to have a lot,

  593. but to never have any trouble

  594. in this life.

  595. That's the greatest

  596. spiritual danger

  597. you can face,

  598. the Bible says,

  599. is to be prosperous

  600. but not suffer.

  601. Whoa.

  602. You see,

  603. he's saying that suffering

  604. is a blessing

  605. because it strips away

  606. your tight hold

  607. on the potential idols

  608. that we all have

  609. in this world.

  610. And so he gives you

  611. a little illustration

  612. in verse 11.

  613. And here's why

  614. it's so dangerous.

  615. You know,

  616. the flower rises in the morning,

  617. it's beautiful in the springtime,

  618. but then the summer heat comes

  619. and it falls to the ground.

  620. And he says,

  621. all of us in our pursuits

  622. are the same way.

  623. The flower fades in the summer.

  624. And in the same way,

  625. when you hitch your heart

  626. to something,

  627. to some pursuit

  628. that's going to fade,

  629. if you hitch your heart

  630. too tightly to it,

  631. you're going to fade with it.

  632. So as it fades,

  633. you will fade.

  634. And suffering is meant

  635. to strip that away from us,

  636. to take that away

  637. from our hearts.

  638. Best time of the year

  639. in Edinburgh,

  640. it's not the Christmas market,

  641. it is when the cherry blossoms

  642. bloom in the meadows, right?

  643. And you can walk through

  644. the meadows

  645. or wherever else

  646. under those archway trees

  647. in the meadows

  648. and the cherry blossoms are out

  649. and it's late April

  650. and they're out.

  651. And you know

  652. that if you've lived here

  653. for any time,

  654. probably far longer than me,

  655. that you can walk

  656. underneath those beautiful blossoms

  657. in the morning

  658. and you come back

  659. in the evening

  660. and where are they?

  661. They're all on the ground.

  662. You know,

  663. it just goes by like that.

  664. And that's exactly

  665. the nature

  666. of the wealthy life.

  667. The glory will fade

  668. and if you have your heart

  669. too tightly attached

  670. to the cherry blossom,

  671. you're going to fade with it.

  672. And it still will remain beautiful

  673. because it is beautiful

  674. on the ground for a while,

  675. but you know

  676. it turns to vapor

  677. and dust eventually.

  678. And that's the warning

  679. he's given us.

  680. There's a genre of art

  681. called memento mori art

  682. from that Latin phrase,

  683. remember,

  684. you must die.

  685. And that genre of art

  686. is reminding us

  687. with skulls

  688. and crossbones

  689. and all sorts of things.

  690. Remember,

  691. you must,

  692. and that's what he's saying,

  693. remember,

  694. you must die.

  695. The rich man has got to remember

  696. that you're sharing

  697. in the suffering of Christ,

  698. your humiliation.

  699. The poor man,

  700. the poor woman

  701. has got to remember

  702. you're sharing

  703. in your suffering

  704. in the glory of Christ.

  705. You're being lifted up

  706. like he was lifted up.

  707. You see,

  708. vice versa.

  709. It's how you can be blessed

  710. in the midst of suffering.

  711. Boy.

  712. Secondly,

  713. the second way

  714. he teaches us here

  715. is to be blessed

  716. in the midst of suffering

  717. is that suffering

  718. then exposes

  719. our deepest problem,

  720. our truest problem.

  721. So let me bring you down,

  722. we'll pass over verse 12

  723. and come back to it,

  724. but verse 13 to 15.

  725. Now he says,

  726. let no one say

  727. when you're tempted,

  728. I'm being tempted by God.

  729. Now there's a temptation.

  730. If you're rich or poor

  731. or something in between,

  732. if you're a human being,

  733. you're a sufferer.

  734. You're facing trials

  735. all the time,

  736. big and small trials.

  737. And now he's turning

  738. and saying,

  739. with that suffering,

  740. with those trials,

  741. there are temptations

  742. coming about

  743. in your life

  744. all the time.

  745. Let me say it like this.

  746. Trials are a test of faith.

  747. He keeps saying that

  748. over and over again.

  749. Your suffering is there

  750. to test your faith.

  751. And that testing of your faith

  752. can grow you,

  753. it can make you mature,

  754. it can make you compassionate,

  755. it can make you,

  756. it can strip away your idols,

  757. it can do so much good

  758. to make you like Jesus,

  759. becoming more and more like Him.

  760. But it can also break you,

  761. it can make you bitter,

  762. you can respond to it

  763. in ways that you actually

  764. end up chasing after

  765. addictions because of it.

  766. So we can respond

  767. to our suffering

  768. with coping mechanisms.

  769. There's things that we need

  770. to run from suffering

  771. with these addictions in life,

  772. we can respond with anger at God,

  773. anger at other people,

  774. bitterness,

  775. this isn't fair,

  776. why have you put this

  777. into my life?

  778. All sorts of ways.

  779. It's not automatic.

  780. Suffering can make you

  781. or break you.

  782. And so now in verse 13 to 15,

  783. he's addressing that temptation

  784. because the temptation

  785. for anybody who faces suffering

  786. is going to be something like,

  787. yeah, I've been in this

  788. long season of suffering

  789. and maybe I haven't handled it

  790. well all the time.

  791. It's made me into an angry person,

  792. a bitter person,

  793. an addicted person.

  794. But you know,

  795. God made me like this.

  796. This is just who I am.

  797. These addictions that I grab hold of

  798. when I'm suffering

  799. to cope with my life,

  800. this is just who God made me to be.

  801. Or you might come and say,

  802. on the other side,

  803. in the midst of my suffering

  804. and my pain and my sorrows,

  805. it's clear that God hates me.

  806. And you can take the approach

  807. of Job's wife and say,

  808. you know, curse God and die.

  809. You've done something bad.

  810. He hates you.

  811. He's left you in the midst

  812. of this misery.

  813. And in verse 13, he says,

  814. let nobody say that.

  815. Verse 16,

  816. don't be deceived,

  817. brothers and sisters.

  818. Let nobody say that.

  819. If you're in the midst of suffering,

  820. God hates me.

  821. Or if you're not handling it well,

  822. not with wisdom,

  823. but with foolishness,

  824. it's God's fault,

  825. not my fault.

  826. He's the one tempting me to this.

  827. He's the one that made me like this.

  828. He says, let nobody say that.

  829. You can't say that.

  830. So in verse 13,

  831. look at the language really specifically

  832. because it's so specific.

  833. Let nobody say when they're tempted,

  834. I'm being tempted by God.

  835. Now, the word temptation there,

  836. you can't see this in English,

  837. but it's so important

  838. that the word temptation there

  839. is the same word in Greek

  840. as the word trial

  841. throughout the passage.

  842. All right,

  843. so when it says in verse 13,

  844. let no one say when he is tempted,

  845. there's two different uses

  846. of the word temptation

  847. or trial in that verse.

  848. So let me translate it a different way.

  849. Let no one say

  850. when they are under a trial of suffering,

  851. I am being tempted.

  852. All right,

  853. it's the same word in Greek.

  854. Let no one say

  855. when they're under trial,

  856. I'm under trial.

  857. Let no one say

  858. when they're tempted,

  859. I'm being tempted.

  860. What is he saying?

  861. He's using it in two different ways.

  862. Let no one say

  863. when they're under the yoke

  864. of a trial,

  865. God is tempting me

  866. to sin in the midst of it.

  867. Now, what is he talking about us today?

  868. He's making this very important distinction

  869. about the psychology of sin,

  870. how does sin work in our lives?

  871. When we react badly to suffering,

  872. whose fault is it?

  873. And he's saying,

  874. you've got to know

  875. that God will put you into trials.

  876. Yes, God gives you suffering,

  877. but he never gives you desire

  878. in your heart

  879. to sin in that suffering.

  880. So God will place you

  881. in an objective situation

  882. of test,

  883. of trial,

  884. of suffering.

  885. God never gives you

  886. the desire in your heart

  887. to react badly,

  888. to sin in the midst of that.

  889. Never.

  890. See, it's the difference

  891. between objective testing

  892. and subjective temptation.

  893. God does not tempt.

  894. He never gives you evil desires.

  895. No.

  896. Any evil desire you have,

  897. any way you react poorly,

  898. who did it?

  899. You did it.

  900. I did it.

  901. That's what he's saying.

  902. And so he uses

  903. a couple illustrations here.

  904. Let me give you one

  905. that's not in the text.

  906. We all know this.

  907. So if you're in school,

  908. you're in uni,

  909. or you have been,

  910. you know that

  911. a good teacher

  912. gives you a test

  913. in order to grow you,

  914. not to break you.

  915. Right?

  916. And that good teacher

  917. tells you in advance,

  918. this is when the exam is coming.

  919. And that exam is meant

  920. to force you to study

  921. and to raise up your knowledge.

  922. And if you go

  923. and you take the test

  924. and you make a,

  925. you make an F,

  926. you fail miserably,

  927. you can't turn and say,

  928. the reason I made an F

  929. is because the teacher,

  930. it's the teacher's fault.

  931. You know,

  932. the teacher should have

  933. never tested me.

  934. The teacher,

  935. the teacher tried to trick me.

  936. The teacher tried to do this

  937. or that.

  938. A good teacher,

  939. no, no.

  940. A good teacher

  941. wants to grow you

  942. through the test.

  943. So he's saying,

  944. look,

  945. God puts you

  946. in objective situations

  947. of suffering

  948. in order to grow you

  949. and change you.

  950. But when we

  951. make the wrong choices,

  952. when we adapt

  953. to those situations foolishly,

  954. it's us.

  955. It's us

  956. that are doing the wrong,

  957. that are doing the sin.

  958. You can never say,

  959. like Job's wife,

  960. you can never say,

  961. God's hating me

  962. in this moment.

  963. And you can never say,

  964. it's God's fault

  965. that I keep doing this,

  966. that I keep coming back.

  967. You keep seeing

  968. that same test of faith

  969. in your life,

  970. that same person,

  971. that same image,

  972. and your heart

  973. is lured and enticed.

  974. You can't say,

  975. it's God's fault

  976. he made me like this.

  977. So he uses here

  978. a sexual metaphor

  979. to explain it.

  980. And you'll see that

  981. down in verse 14 and 15.

  982. Each person is tempted

  983. when they are lured

  984. and enticed

  985. by their own desires.

  986. And that word for desire

  987. is a very important word

  988. and I want to give it to you

  989. in the Greek

  990. because you'll know it

  991. partially in English.

  992. And it's this word,

  993. epithumia.

  994. Thumia just means desire,

  995. but epi, epi,

  996. like epic,

  997. epic, big, bold,

  998. epicenter,

  999. the core,

  1000. bold desires,

  1001. big desires,

  1002. centering desires,

1003. deep desires is the word.

1004. It's not the normal word

  1005. for desire,

  1006. it's deep desires.

  1007. Why?

  1008. Because he's saying,

  1009. how does sin

1010. take place in our lives?

  1011. Especially when we're reacting

  1012. to situations of trial

  1013. and suffering.

  1014. He's saying that

1015. deep down at the core

  1016. of your heart,

  1017. deeper than

  1018. all of your thoughts,

  1019. deeper than

1020. the self that you even know,

  1021. there is epi desire,

  1022. deep desire.

  1023. And that deep desire

  1024. sees opportunity for sin.

  1025. And then,

  1026. you see the rest

  1027. of the metaphor,

  1028. then it gives,

  1029. it conceives.

1030. So when your deepest desires

  1031. for something

1032. that is other than God,

  1033. see opportunity,

  1034. there's a conception

  1035. that takes place.

  1036. See,

  1037. it's a sexual metaphor.

  1038. And then,

  1039. that conception grows.

  1040. It says it grows

  1041. and it grows

1042. and then it gives birth.

1043. And birth brings forth death.

  1044. So it's saying,

  1045. every act of sin

  1046. follows that trajectory.

1047. And what are these epi desires?

  1048. Thomas Aquinas

  1049. helped us know

  1050. what they are

  1051. and all sorts of

  1052. Christian thinkers

  1053. from the Bible

  1054. throughout world history.

  1055. There's really only four.

  1056. So you can desire

  1057. all sorts of things

  1058. in this life,

  1059. chase after things

  1060. that are sin,

  1061. but there's only four

  1062. epi desires,

  1063. really,

  1064. epithumia,

  1065. deep desires in you,

1066. and that is the desire

  1067. for the illicit,

  1068. disordered desire

  1069. for power,

  1070. the disordered desire

  1071. for security,

  1072. a disordered desire

  1073. for comfort or pleasure,

  1074. and a disordered desire

  1075. for approval.

1076. So if you take power,

  1077. pleasure,

  1078. approval,

  1079. or security,

1080. and you want those things

1081. more than you want God,

  1082. that's the real core

  1083. of epithumia.

  1084. That's what's at the bottom

1085. of all of our souls,

  1086. giving birth

  1087. to actionable sins

  1088. all throughout our life.

1089. And you can think about

  1090. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1091. Eve.

  1092. This is just,

  1093. I think James here

  1094. is just teaching us

  1095. Genesis 3.

  1096. It says that Eve

  1097. saw that the fruit

  1098. could make her

  1099. like God,

  1100. wise like God.

  1101. So those epithumia

  1102. were triggered

  1103. with an opportunity.

  1104. And it says,

1105. it tells us that she saw,

  1106. she delighted in

  1107. the opportunity.

1108. She reached out her hand,

  1109. she took,

  1110. and it gave birth

  1111. to death.

  1112. And James says

  1113. the same thing.

  1114. Your deepest desires

  1115. see an opportunity,

  1116. it conceives,

  1117. you let it grow,

1118. and then it gives birth.

1119. And when you reach out

1120. your hand and you take,

1121. death has entered the room.

  1122. The psychology of sin,

1123. it's the way it works

  1124. every single time.

  1125. And he's specifically

1126. bringing it to the lens

  1127. of suffering and saying,

  1128. when we're walking

  1129. through trials and suffering

  1130. in our life,

1131. and we keep grabbing the fruit,

  1132. grabbing the apple,

1133. keep chasing that same thing,

  1134. we say we're faced

1135. with the test of faith,

  1136. and it's a,

  1137. boy,

  1138. is it suffering.

  1139. Yes,

  1140. it is.

  1141. It keeps coming back,

  1142. the same temptation,

1143. and we keep reaching out.

  1144. He's saying,

  1145. who did it?

  1146. You did.

  1147. Not God.

1148. God puts you in the test

  1149. to grow you,

  1150. but when you fail,

  1151. when you struggle,

  1152. it's me,

  1153. it's you that struggle.

  1154. It's our sinful desire

  1155. at the bottom.

  1156. There's a golem,

  1157. there's a golem

  1158. at the very bottom.

  1159. That's what he's saying.

1160. And what can you do about that?

1161. And what you can do about that

  1162. is, I think,

1163. just one or two things,

1164. because we can't say everything

  1165. that could be said

1166. about what to do about it,

  1167. but today,

  1168. in the passage,

1169. what can you do about it?

  1170. He says,

  1171. blessed are you

  1172. when you use trials

  1173. and suffering

  1174. and even your failures

  1175. to actually understand yourself.

1176. So I think one of the things

  1177. you can do today

  1178. is realize,

  1179. he's calling me here

  1180. to self-knowledge.

1181. What are my deepest desires

  1182. that are giving birth

1183. to sin in my life

  1184. when I face trials

  1185. and suffering and tests?

  1186. Do you know them?

  1187. Do you know yourself?

  1188. Do you know

1189. what your deep idols are?

  1190. Do you know

1191. what your deep idols are?

  1192. One of the ways

  1193. you can learn

  1194. is in the midst

  1195. of your own failures

  1196. and your struggles

  1197. to ask,

1198. to do a sort of

  1199. removal process.

  1200. So,

1201. do I really crave power

  1202. or security

  1203. or pleasure

  1204. or approval

1205. more than the other four?

  1206. Right?

  1207. So you can almost

  1208. take them away

  1209. and say,

  1210. I know I can,

  1211. I won't spill the beans

  1212. on my own,

  1213. but,

  1214. you know,

1215. I can look at my life

  1216. and I can say,

  1217. I know that it's not

1218. security that I love most.

  1219. I know it's not,

  1220. it's not comfort

  1221. that I love most

1222. and I can whittle down

1223. to what it really is

1224. in the bottom of the soul.

  1225. Have you done that?

  1226. Have you,

  1227. have you looked

  1228. at your idols?

  1229. That's what,

  1230. that's what tests

  1231. actually show you,

  1232. self-knowledge.

  1233. The second thing

1234. he tells you to do

  1235. is he says,

  1236. instead of saying,

  1237. what is God doing?

  1238. He must hate me.

  1239. Instead,

  1240. he said,

  1241. you've got to do

  1242. some theology

1243. and you've got to say,

1244. God is never doing wrong

  1245. by me in this.

  1246. And so you'll see

  1247. in verse 13,

  1248. remember,

  1249. God tempts nobody.

  1250. He never creates

1251. a desire in your life

  1252. to sin

  1253. because he cannot

  1254. desire evil.

  1255. He can't desire sin.

  1256. So he would never

1257. give you a desire for sin.

  1258. No,

  1259. not at all.

  1260. It comes from you.

  1261. But then secondly,

  1262. in verse 17,

  1263. cognitive reframe.

  1264. Instead,

  1265. verse 17,

1266. he is giving you gifts

  1267. in the midst

  1268. of this process

  1269. of learning.

1270. And what are those gifts?

  1271. Now,

1272. as we read our English Bibles,

1273. as we kind of do

  1274. a day-by-day reading plan,

  1275. and you're reading

  1276. through James,

  1277. in verse 17,

1278. you would read this clause

  1279. very quickly.

1280. Every good and perfect gift

  1281. is from above.

1282. But you've got to slow down

  1283. right there and realize

  1284. that when he says

  1285. every good gift

  1286. and perfect gift,

  1287. he's talking about

1288. two different types of gifts.

  1289. So it's a temptation

  1290. just to say,

  1291. oh,

1292. every good and perfect gift.

  1293. It's all from God.

  1294. Good gifts there

1295. are what kind of gifts?

  1296. They are the sunshine

  1297. and the rain

1298. and the food that tastes good

  1299. and music

  1300. and Spotify

  1301. and, you know,

  1302. all the good gifts

  1303. that we have

  1304. in this life.

  1305. Right?

  1306. Every good gift

  1307. is from God.

  1308. And he's saying

  1309. that first category,

  1310. remember,

1311. what do you got to do?

  1312. You got to realize

  1313. all the good gifts

  1314. in your life

  1315. are coming from God.

  1316. He's not tempting you

  1317. toward evil desire.

  1318. That's coming

  1319. from your heart.

  1320. Instead,

1321. in the midst of that,

  1322. you got to realize

  1323. that the only reason

  1324. you even know

  1325. you're suffering,

  1326. the only reason

  1327. you know you're suffering

  1328. is because you're being

  1329. lavished with gifts.

  1330. You're in the context

  1331. of being surrounded

  1332. all the time.

  1333. You know,

1334. you might be in the midst

  1335. of trial,

1336. but did you eat today?

1337. Did you drink water today?

1338. Do you have a friendship?

1339. Do you have a church?

  1340. Yeah.

  1341. You're being lavished

1342. with gifts all the time.

  1343. That's the only way

  1344. you can even know

  1345. you're suffering.

  1346. You see?

  1347. He's reframing

  1348. and helping you see.

  1349. If you're a materialist,

  1350. secular materialist

  1351. in the room today,

1352. you got to think about it.

  1353. You got to say,

  1354. do you say,

  1355. it's not fair?

  1356. I hate my suffering.

1357. But if God doesn't exist,

  1358. if there's no gift

1359. coming down from on high,

  1360. the lion doesn't care

1361. when he eats the gazelle.

  1362. And cancer doesn't care

1363. when it eats up your body.

1364. But if you're really committed

  1365. to materialism,

  1366. you've got to say

  1367. the same thing.

  1368. I don't have any right

1369. to be upset about this.

  1370. This is the ordinary

  1371. process of nature.

  1372. But you're not.

1373. You're not happy with that.

1374. And the reason you're not

  1375. is because you know

  1376. that your life

1377. is being lavish with gifts.

  1378. You know that you

  1379. weren't made for suffering,

  1380. that that's not what

  1381. true humanity

1382. is meant to be like.

1383. And so you struggle with it.

  1384. You wrestle with it.

1385. But it's not just good gifts.

  1386. He says,

  1387. then it's perfect gifts.

1388. And the word perfect there

  1389. is the same word

  1390. as in verse 4

  1391. when he says,

  1392. your suffering

  1393. can make you perfect.

  1394. So he's saying,

  1395. what is he saying?

  1396. He's saying that

  1397. when he gives you

  1398. trials and tests,

  1399. they are gifts.

  1400. They're perfecting gifts.

  1401. So he's saying,

  1402. you've got to reframe

1403. and realize that your life

1404. is being lavish with gifts.

  1405. But when suffering

  1406. does come,

  1407. the Christian can say,

  1408. that's a perfecting gift

  1409. in my life.

1410. God is actually using that

  1411. to grow me.

  1412. He's testing me.

1413. And I've got to see it that way.

  1414. I've got to reframe

1415. my life in that way.

  1416. God never gives you

  1417. desire to sin.

1418. And he doesn't hate you.

  1419. He loves you.

1420. He wants to grow you.

  1421. Why?

1422. Because he is the God

1423. with whom there is no shadow

  1424. due to change.

1425. He gives you a little metaphor.

  1426. He says,

  1427. look,

  1428. God never changes.

1429. And that means that the God

  1430. who gave the suffering

  1431. into Job's life

1432. in order to grow him

  1433. is the same God

  1434. who's giving this suffering

  1435. in your life

  1436. to grow you.

1437. It's the same exact situation.

  1438. He's never changed.

  1439. He's the God

  1440. of the sun,

  1441. moon,

  1442. and stars.

  1443. stars.

  1444. And as he shines,

  1445. you know,

  1446. he doesn't have a shadow

  1447. due to change.

  1448. What does that mean?

1449. It means that when you

  1450. stand outside

1451. and the sun is shining,

1452. the sun shines on you,

  1453. it casts a shadow

  1454. on the ground.

  1455. And if you turn,

1456. if you turn one way

  1457. or the other,

  1458. the shadow turns,

  1459. right?

  1460. He's saying God

  1461. never casts a shadow.

  1462. In other words,

  1463. he's not a creature.

  1464. He doesn't turn

  1465. right or left,

  1466. or he doesn't,

1467. the sun can't hit him

  1468. and cast a shadow

  1469. on the ground.

  1470. He doesn't change.

  1471. The God

  1472. who has given suffering

1473. in the life of Job

  1474. to grow him,

  1475. the same God.

  1476. He's doing the same

1477. exact thing in your life.

  1478. Now, finally,

  1479. and very briefly,

  1480. just a couple minutes.

  1481. Thirdly,

  1482. our suffering points us

  1483. to the blessed man.

  1484. And here's how.

  1485. Verse 12.

  1486. Verse 12 tells us

  1487. as we close,

  1488. blessed is the man

  1489. who remains steadfast

  1490. under trial.

1491. Now, this has all been

1492. about how you can be

  1493. blessed in suffering.

1494. And you might say today,

1495. can you say today with me,

  1496. some of the things

1497. I listed in that ordinary week

  1498. at the beginning

  1499. of the service,

  1500. beginning of the sermon,

1501. happened in my life this week.

  1502. Maybe they happened

1503. in your life this week.

  1504. You know,

  1505. the ticket that comes

  1506. in the mail

1507. or the bus that doesn't run

1508. or you can't find your keys

1509. or whatever else it is.

  1510. And you say,

  1511. in the little annoyances

1512. and the big things of life,

1513. I have not faced the test

  1514. in the trial

1515. with wisdom in every way.

1516. And I have been frustrated

  1517. with God

  1518. and I have wondered,

1519. does God hate me right now?

  1520. And I have wondered

1521. if I have any value.

  1522. And, you know,

1523. I think suffering shows us

1524. that if we use it

  1525. in Jesus' metaphor,

1526. our house is not entirely

  1527. built on the rock.

1528. It's sort of on the rock

1529. and halfway onto the sand.

  1530. And when suffering comes,

  1531. you know,

  1532. I realize I've got to

  1533. shift my life

1534. a little more on the rock

  1535. because right now

  1536. it's 50% sand underneath.

  1537. And that's what suffering

  1538. does for us.

1539. I told you last week

1540. that when you're reading James,

  1541. one way to realize

1542. is that James doesn't mention Jesus

  1543. but two times

  1544. in the whole book.

  1545. But he's teaching

  1546. Jesus' teaching

  1547. all throughout.

  1548. When he says

  1549. in verse 12,

  1550. blessed is the man

  1551. who remains steadfast

  1552. in all trials.

  1553. He's been talking

  1554. the whole time

  1555. about brothers and sisters,

  1556. the beloved plural,

  1557. but then he uses

  1558. this masculine singular,

  1559. blessed is the man.

1560. And what is he quoting there?

  1561. He's quoting

  1562. from the Beatitudes,

  1563. Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1564. And he's drawing us

  1565. to see something

  1566. that when you're walking

  1567. through suffering

1568. and trial in your life,

1569. what do you need most?

  1570. You need beloved

  1571. brothers and sisters.

  1572. You need to know

  1573. that just like

  1574. the first century

1575. people James was talking to,

  1576. they didn't suffer well

  1577. all the time.

  1578. You're not suffering

  1579. well all the time.

  1580. I'm not suffering

  1581. well all the time.

  1582. You need to know

  1583. that the blessed man

  1584. has already walked

1585. the road that you're walking.

  1586. The blessed man

1587. has already faced the trial

  1588. and he was steadfast.

  1589. The blessed man himself,

  1590. Jesus Christ,

1591. has run the race for you

1592. and now you are following

  1593. in his footsteps.

  1594. You need to know

1595. Jesus lover of my soul,

  1596. you are with me.

  1597. You need a person.

  1598. And that's what verse 12

  1599. is pointing us to.

  1600. He's saying that

  1601. when you know

  1602. that he has walked

1603. through every trial for you,

1604. he stood in the fray

  1605. on your behalf,

1606. he went to the cross for you,

  1607. you can say,

  1608. now I'm walking a road

  1609. where the rock

  1610. is already secure.

1611. He's not going to leave me.

  1612. I'm going to get

  1613. across the finish line.

1614. He's going to take me

1615. all the way to the crown of life.

1616. And crown of life there

1617. is not what we think of.

  1618. It's not diadem.

  1619. It's the athlete's wreath.

  1620. It's not the crown

1621. of a king or queen,

  1622. but it's the woven athlete's wreath.

  1623. You run the marathon

1624. and the king leans over

1625. and puts the athlete's wreath

  1626. upon your head.

  1627. He's saying,

  1628. because he has already

  1629. walked the path,

  1630. you will receive

  1631. the crown of life.

  1632. Finish with a story.

  1633. The Christian life

1634. is a lot like this

1635. in the midst of our suffering.

  1636. I don't know

  1637. if you've come across

  1638. the video.

1639. If you are a person

  1640. who scrolls,

  1641. you will undoubtedly

  1642. have come across

1643. the video of Derek Redman.

  1644. And Derek Redman

  1645. was an athlete,

  1646. U.S. athlete,

  1647. in the 1992 Olympics.

  1648. And he had trained,

  1649. he was a favorite

1650. for the 400 meter sprint.

1651. And he got about 100 meters

1652. into the 400 meter sprint

  1653. at the 1992 Olympics.

1654. And he pulled his hamstring.

1655. And maybe you've seen it.

  1656. And he goes down

  1657. to the ground.

1658. And he tries to get back up.

1659. And he hobbles, you know.

  1660. And everybody else

1661. has already finished the race.

  1662. And his dad,

  1663. his father,

  1664. jumps over the barriers

  1665. and runs out

  1666. onto the Olympic track.

  1667. And he picked,

  1668. and the security guards

1669. are trying to get him,

1670. you can't come out here.

1671. And he pushes him away.

1672. And the dad picks his son up,

  1673. Derek,

1674. and he puts his arm

  1675. over his shoulder

  1676. and he carries him

  1677. all the way

1678. to the finish line, right?

  1679. And they're weeping.

1680. And he carries them across

1681. and he gets the crown of life,

  1682. the athlete's wreath.

  1683. That's the Christian life.

  1684. You're going to pull

  1685. a hamstring this week.

  1686. Maybe literally.

  1687. But figuratively, definitely.

  1688. And Jesus Christ,

  1689. the blessed man

  1690. who has already

1691. walked the road for you,

  1692. he will carry you

  1693. through your suffering.

  1694. You might,

1695. some of you will sprint,

1696. some of you will crawl,

1697. some of you will walk fast.

  1698. You will grow

  1699. to different levels

  1700. of maturity,

1701. but Jesus will take you

  1702. all the way.

1703. Will you grow with him?

1704. Will you become like him

  1705. in that?

  1706. That's the question.

  1707. Let us pray.

  1708. Father,

  1709. we ask

1710. that you would train us

  1711. to be mature

1712. in our sufferings like Jesus.

  1713. And we thank you

1714. that we have a blessed man

1715. who has run the race before us.

1716. So help us to trust in him today.

1717. We pray in Christ's name.

  1718. Amen.
