  1. Well, good morning. It's good to be with you this morning. If we haven't met, my name is Keith Knowlton.

  2. ! It's a pleasure to bring God's Word with you this morning.

  3. As James said, we're starting a brief sermon series as we lead up to Christmas looking at the names of Jesus.

  4. And today we'll be looking at the name, the Prince of Peace, taken from Isaiah chapter 9, verses 1 through 7.

    Isaiah 9:1–7

  5. So you can read that on the screen behind me or turn in your pew Bible to page 694.

  6. But by way of introduction, I wonder if how many of us have heard of the Christmas truce.

  7. Going back to December 1914, World War I was raging.

  8. By that time, only five months have passed in the war and over a million men have died.

  9. Many thought going to war that this war would only last a few months.

  10. But now they were entrenched in this trench warfare that had caused them to be locked in this bitter turmoil,

  11. this bitter stalemate, exhausted, and soldiers feeling the fatigue of war.

  12. But on Christmas Eve 1914, near Epers, Belgium, something rather extraordinary occurred.

  13. As the light was beginning to fade, the British soldiers could see off in the distance across from No Man's Land,

  14. in the German trenches, these little lights being lit.

  15. And then slowly over No Man's Land, they hear the sound of Christmas carols being sung in German.

  16. And at first, the British troops thought this might be a trap.

  17. They thought this was very peculiar that this would happen.

  18. But as they continued to listen, they realized this was no trap.

  19. This was true Christmas caroling, and slowly the British forces began to join in in English.

  20. And what happened, even more extraordinary, was the next morning on Christmas Day,

  21. that German soldiers came out of their trenches with hands raised and beckoned the British soldiers to do the same.

  22. And they met in the middle of this No Man's Land.

  23. And soldiers who were just hours before, readying themselves to shoot and kill one another,

  24. were now shaking hands, exchanging pleasantries, small gifts of tobacco and photographs.

  25. Even games of football were breaking out.

  26. These few hours, war had stopped.

  27. Guns were not fired, shells were not dropped, and these young men, weary from war, far from home,

  28. were granted this temporary, rather unexpected peace.

  29. But as expected, by nightfall, command had come down from the generals to say,

  30. there is to be no fraternizing with the enemy.

  31. And by the next day, fighting had resumed.

  32. This temporary truce did not last.

  33. And war continued for four more years, with millions more dying.

  34. The reality is this famous Christmas truth, it didn't end the war,

  35. but I think it shows really a universal truth that human hearts long for peace.

  36. But that as man, we are not able to achieve this permanent peace on our own.

  37. And so as we turn to our passage today, we're looking at this prophecy that anticipates a different kind of peace.

  38. Not a man-made peace, not a temporary peace,

  39. but a peace that is lasting and restorative,

  40. that comes from our one true king, the prince of peace.

  41. And so let's look at our passage together.

  42. Isaiah chapter 9, starting in verse 1.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  43. Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who are in distress.

  44. In the past, he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

  45. but in the future, he will honor Galilee of the nations by the way of the sea beyond the Jordan.

  46. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.

  47. On those living in the land of deep darkness, a light has drawn.

  48. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy.

  49. They rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest,

  50. as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

  51. For as in the day of Midian's defeat,

  52. you have shattered the yoke that burdens them,

  53. the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressors.

  54. Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood

  55. will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.

  56. For unto us a child is born, for us a son is given,

  57. and the government will be on his shoulders.

  58. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  59. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  60. Of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end.

  61. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom,

  62. establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness

  63. from that time on and forever.

  64. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

  65. This is the word of God.

  66. Will you pray with me?

  67. God, our Heavenly Father,

  68. we ask that you guide us this morning by your word and by your spirit,

  69. that in your light we may see light,

  70. that in your truth we may find wisdom,

  71. that in your will we may discover your peace.

  72. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  73. Amen.

  74. Now I imagine that this passage is familiar to many of us.

  75. It's one of those passages that we easily dust off the Christmas season

  76. for a Christmas sermon or an Advent devotional.

  77. And while I think it's good that we know this text,

  78. it's familiar to us,

  79. oftentimes we can pluck it out of its context

  80. without really knowing where does it fit into this Old Testament narrative.

  81. And so I want us to do when we begin

  82. is trying to figure out what is the context of this prophecy?

  83. What is going on in the people of Israel at this time?

  84. This prophecy was given by God through the prophet Isaiah to King Ahaz.

  85. Now if you know anything about King Ahaz,

  86. if you were to rank the kings of Judah and Israel from best to worst,

  87. Ahaz would be at the very bottom of this list.

  88. Ahaz was a wicked king.

  89. He worshipped idols of other gods.

  90. He sacrificed his own sons to these idols.

  91. He took elements, the riches of the temple,

  92. and he gave them to other kings in order to make alliances with them.

  93. And even as Israel starts to face judgment for having turned against God,

  94. his faithlessness even grows.

  95. He cuts up the vessels from the temple,

  96. he shuts the doors to the temple,

  97. and he sets up idols in every corner of Jerusalem.

  98. And so Isaiah is instructed to go to Ahaz

  99. to encourage him to repent,

  100. to put his trust in God.

  101. He even says,

  102. Go give Ahaz the ability to ask for a sign

  103. that I will show him,

  104. that I will prove that I'm the one true God,

  105. and he'll put his trust in me.

  106. But Ahaz refuses.

  107. So you think,

  108. Well, God has every right just to strike Ahaz dead right there

  109. to end his kingship at that point,

  110. but he doesn't.

  111. Instead, he grants him a sign,

  112. even though he refuses.

  113. He wants to prove his covenant faithfulness to his people,

  114. even when his people have been unfaithful to him.

  115. And so we see earlier on in the book of Isaiah,

  116. this first prophecy of this sign.

  117. A virgin will give birth to a son,

  118. and his name will be called Emmanuel,

  119. God with us.

  120. And so what we see in our passage today in chapter 9

  121. is this same Christ child.

  122. Now, it may seem obvious for us.

  123. We recognize this passage.

  124. It relates to Christmas and the birth of Jesus.

  125. But for these people,

  126. they have no concept of Christmas.

  127. They don't understand when this prophecy

  128. is going to be fulfilled.

  129. And so it's good to ask,

  130. What would the people have thought in that time

  131. when they hear this prophecy of a prince of peace?

  132. Certainly, they long for peace

  133. as the Assyrian army is ready to overthrow them.

  134. They want peace in their lives.

  135. They want peace in their nation.

  136. When will it come?

  137. Well, this wicked king Ahaz, he does die,

  138. and his son Hezekiah comes to the throne.

  139. And Hezekiah is actually a good king.

  140. He repairs and he restores,

  141. and he reopens the temple.

  142. He gets rid of all the idols.

  143. He reorganizes the priests.

  144. He brings the people of Israel,

  145. the people of Judah to repentance,

  146. and they worship God once again.

  147. The thing is that Hezekiah,

  148. even though he was a faithful king,

  149. he couldn't fulfill this prophecy.

  150. Because it says that Hezekiah,

  151. as he amassed this wealth

  152. and this power and his influence,

  153. he too became prideful.

  154. And he died,

  155. and peace did not remain

  156. in the land of Judah.

  157. And so this prophecy,

  158. it points out to us,

  159. there must have been someone greater

  160. who was being prophesied.

  161. Because Hezekiah couldn't fulfill this prophecy.

  162. He is only a shadow of the one to come.

  163. This divine child is to be born.

  164. This only son of the Father,

  165. He alone can forever lift this cloud of darkness

  166. and establish this eternal kingdom.

  167. And so that leads us to the titles we see in this passage.

  168. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  169. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  170. It's really this crescendo that we see.

  171. This Prince of Peace being this peak,

  172. this ultimate, this promised leader

  173. who promises to ensure the peace and prosperity

  174. and well-being of His people forever.

  175. And so that title specifically,

  176. I want us to consider today,

  177. this Prince of Peace.

  178. What is this peace

  179. that our leader and king provides?

  180. Three ways I want us to consider this peace.

  181. First of all, this upward peace,

  182. an outward peace,

  183. and an inward peace.

  184. So let's first think about this upward peace.

  185. And I think when we do,

  186. I think it's important to define our terms.

  187. What do we mean when we say peace?

  188. My family and I have been in the UK for over five years.

  189. And while we speak the same language,

  190. we've had to adjust to the vocabulary.

  191. There are certain words that we have meaning for

  192. in the US that have very different meaning in the UK.

  193. So things like chips,

  194. or biscuits,

  195. or a vest,

  196. or trolleys,

  197. or pants.

  198. Right?

  199. All things that we need to make sure

  200. we understand what our terms are.

  201. Even though we're speaking the same language,

  202. words can have very different meanings.

  203. So the same thing when we think about peace.

  204. What does peace mean?

  205. Oftentimes we think,

  206. well, it just means a sense of serenity

  207. or the absence of fighting.

  208. But if we look at what this word peace means

  209. in the Old Testament,

  210. in this word shalom,

  211. which probably many of us have heard before,

  212. it has a much fuller meaning.

  213. It means a wholeness,

  214. a flourishing,

  215. a completeness.

  216. Not simply the absence of fighting,

  217. but the presence of harmony and order.

  218. And so this is exactly what we see

  219. in the creation story in Genesis.

  220. In the beginning,

  221. we have a triune God

  222. who creates all things

  223. in the span of six days.

  224. And he says it is all good.

  225. He creates man in his own image

  226. that he may share in this peace.

  227. He gives man a wife, Eve,

  228. to provide completeness for him.

  229. He gives them a garden

  230. with good things to eat.

  231. He gives them a purpose

  232. that they may take dominion

  233. over creation

  234. and experience this wholeness together.

  235. We have a God

  236. who descends and walks

  237. in this garden

  238. in peace with Adam and Eve.

  239. But unfortunately,

  240. this shalom is broken

  241. when sin enters the world.

  242. Adam and Eve

  243. are tempted by the serpent.

  244. They eat the fruit

  245. of the forbidden tree

  246. and their eyes are open

  247. to their nakedness.

  248. And so rather than walk

  249. in fellowship with God,

  250. they hide in shame.

  251. Rather than enjoy this peace,

  252. they run from God,

  253. fearing his judgment.

  254. But what we see next

  255. is something that's really remarkable

  256. because God could have condemned

  257. Adam and Eve there,

  258. but instead he speaks

  259. these words of shalom over them.

  260. While there would be consequences

  261. for their action,

  262. God comforts his children

  263. with the promise

  264. that peace will come

  265. through one who will crush the head

  266. of this lying, murderous serpent.

  267. Though sin has now separated man from God,

  268. God promises this full restoration

  269. will come

  270. and it's going to come

  271. through the seed of a woman.

  272. And so this is the beginning

  273. of God's rescue plan.

  274. So as we continue on

  275. in the book of Genesis,

  276. we see that God comes

  277. to a man named Abram.

  278. And he chooses to bless Abram.

  279. And he says he's going to make him

  280. into a great nation

  281. that all nations

  282. through him will be blessed.

  283. And as we continue on

  284. in the Bible,

  285. these descendants of Abraham,

  286. they become slaves

  287. in the land of Egypt.

  288. And God proves his faithfulness again.

  289. He raises up Moses

  290. to lead the people

  291. out of slavery,

  292. out of Egypt,

  293. into the promised land.

  294. And on their way there,

  295. he takes them to Mount Sinai

  296. where he again

  297. renews this covenant promise.

  298. He gives them the law

  299. with its blessings and curses.

  300. And so we've heard

  301. this blessing before.

  302. Oftentimes we end our service

  303. with this blessing

  304. of Aaron, the high priest,

  305. to give to his people

  306. the Lord bless you

  307. and keep you.

  308. The Lord make his face

  309. to shine on you

  310. and be gracious to you.

  311. The Lord turn his face

  312. towards you

  313. and give you peace.

  314. And so we may think

  315. that after 40 years

  316. of wandering in the wilderness,

  317. God's going to bring them

  318. into this promised land

  319. and we think,

  320. okay, this is where

  321. this restoration

  322. is going to occur.

  323. This relationship

  324. that had been ruined by sin

  325. will be restored.

  326. God's people will be obedient

  327. and faithful

  328. and they'll experience

  329. this unending prosperity

  330. and blessing.

  331. We know that's not right.

  332. Something we see

  333. very different occurs.

  334. Instead, we see

  335. this repeated cycle

  336. of sin and rebellion

  337. that's followed

  338. by discipline

  339. and judgment

  340. and brief periods

  341. of repentance

  342. and deliverance

  343. and then what happens again?

  344. More sin,

  345. more rebellion.

  346. And so we see

  347. this is the history

  348. of God's people

  349. throughout the Old Testament.

  350. One of brokenness

  351. and chaos

  352. and disorder.

  353. One defined by war

  354. and occupation

  355. and division

  356. and exile.

  357. And maybe

  358. you even experience this

  359. as you read these texts,

  360. this desire to cry out,

  361. when will peace come?

  362. It's obvious

  363. that they are not going

  364. to be able

  365. to save themselves.

  366. When will this Messiah,

  367. when will this rescuer arrive?

  368. And what we see

  369. is a prophecy

  370. like one in Isaiah

  371. that promises

  372. this Prince of Peace,

  373. that points us forward

  374. to the coming

  375. of this Messiah.

  376. And we see that He arrives

  377. in the most unexpected way.

  378. The Son of God

  379. becoming man,

  380. being born of a woman

  381. to a poor family

  382. in a stable.

  383. This is what the angels

  384. announce

  385. the night of Jesus' birth.

  386. Glory to God

  387. in the highest

  388. and on earth

  389. peace

  390. among those

  391. with whom He is pleased.

  392. Jesus,

  393. when He starts

  394. His earthly ministry,

  395. He too quotes

  396. from Isaiah

  397. when He announces

  398. His mission

  399. for coming to earth.

  400. What we see

  401. at the Last Supper

  402. before Jesus' crucifixion

  403. is that He takes

  404. this bread

  405. and He takes this wine

  406. and He tells

  407. His apostles,

  408. this bread

  409. is like My body

  410. that will be broken.

  411. This wine

  412. is like My blood

  413. that will be spilled.

  414. And what does He declare

  415. to them?

  416. Peace I leave with you.

  417. My peace I give you.

  418. And it's within days

  419. that He goes to the cross

  420. to fulfill the promise

  421. and the purpose

  422. for which He came.

  423. What was also prophesied

  424. by the prophet Isaiah

  425. in Isaiah 53,

  426. He was pierced

  427. for our transgressions.

  428. He was crushed

  429. for our iniquities.

  430. Upon Him

  431. was the chastisement

  432. that brought us peace.

  433. And with His wounds

  434. we're healed.

  435. And so again,

  436. it's not a peace

  437. that's simply

  438. this serenity.

  439. It's not simply

  440. a peace

  441. that's the absence

  442. of fighting.

  443. This is full restoration

  444. of our relationship

  445. with God.

  446. And so this is what

  447. we see Paul talk about

  448. in Colossians 1

  449. that Christ restores

  450. all things to God

  451. through His death

  452. making peace

  453. through the blood

  454. of Jesus.

  455. This is what

  456. we read earlier

  457. in the book of Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  458. chapter 5

  459. that since we have

  460. been justified by faith

  461. we have peace

  462. with God

  463. through our Lord

  464. Jesus Christ.

  465. So our relationship

  466. that had been ruined

  467. in the Garden of Eden

  468. has now been restored

  469. and it's not

  470. through the works

  471. of man.

  472. It's only through

  473. this promised Messiah

  474. who is truly

  475. our peace.

  476. And so a question

  477. for each one of us

  478. this morning is

  479. have we been

  480. reconciled to God?

  481. have we experienced

  482. the wholeness

  483. and the restoration

  484. that comes only

  485. through the blood

  486. of Jesus?

  487. Because without

  488. the sacrifice of Jesus

  489. there's nothing

  490. that we can do

  491. to earn God's favor.

  492. There's nothing

  493. that we can do

  494. to put ourselves

  495. in right standing

  496. before God.

  497. Judgment and death

  498. are all that remain

  499. for us.

  500. But we have Jesus

  501. who is our

  502. Prince of Peace

  503. Prince of Peace

  504. who loves

  505. to save

  506. sinners like me

  507. you and me

  508. loves

  509. to supply shalom

  510. between man and God.

  511. And so that brings us

  512. to our second form

  513. of peace then.

  514. Not only an upward peace

  515. but an outward peace.

  516. That upward peace

  517. describes that

  518. vertical relationship

  519. between man and God.

  520. This outward peace

  521. describes this

  522. horizontal relationship

  523. between man

  524. and the world.

  525. These past few months

  526. if you've been with us

  527. we've been going through

  528. in the morning

  529. a sermon series

  530. on the book of Acts.

  531. And so we've been

  532. looking at what happens

  533. to the New Testament church

  534. after Jesus' crucifixion

  535. and resurrection

  536. and ascension

  537. and the sending

  538. of the Holy Spirit.

  539. Well you see the apostles

  540. with the power

  541. of the Holy Spirit

  542. they're preaching

  543. a gospel of reconciliation.

  544. That though you

  545. talking to the Jewish

  546. leaders of the day

  547. though you crucify

  548. this man

  549. he is truly

  550. the Lord and the Christ

  551. and one who offers

  552. peace and life

  553. to each person.

  554. And so recognize

  555. how this message

  556. was received

  557. by the New Testament church

  558. how it benefited

  559. the church.

  560. We read how

  561. the people

  562. of this New Testament church

  563. they devoted themselves

  564. to the teaching

  565. and preaching

  566. of God's word

  567. to fellowship

  568. to the breaking

  569. of bread and prayer.

  570. They held all things

  571. in common

  572. they sold their possessions

  573. and belongings

  574. and distributed the proceeds

  575. to those in need.

  576. every day

  577. attending the temple

  578. together

  579. breaking bread

  580. in each other's homes

  581. they received their food

  582. with glad and generous hearts

  583. and so we see

  584. this beautiful picture

  585. of unity

  586. of God's people

  587. in the early church.

  588. But what we see

  589. is this unity

  590. even goes a step further

  591. as we advance

  592. in the book of Acts.

  593. If we go to Acts 10

  594. we see this vision

  595. that Peter has

  596. this vision

  597. of clean

  598. and unclean animals

  599. and it's God

  600. communicating to him

  601. that this gospel peace

  602. is not simply

  603. for the Jews

  604. it is for the Gentiles

  605. as well.

  606. God offers

  607. his peace

  608. to all men.

  609. So again

  610. this is what Paul says

  611. in Ephesians 2

  612. but now in Christ Jesus

  613. those who are far off

  614. talking about Gentiles

  615. like you and me

  616. have been brought near

  617. through the blood

  618. of Jesus

  619. for he himself

  620. is our peace

  621. he has made

  622. these two groups

  623. one

  624. Jew and Gentile

  625. he has made them one

  626. destroying the barrier

  627. dividing the wall

  628. this dividing wall

  629. of hostility.

  630. His purpose

  631. was to create

  632. in himself

  633. one new humanity

  634. out of two

  635. thus making peace.

  636. He came

  637. preaching peace

  638. to you who are far off

  639. and peace to those

  640. who are near.

  641. This is true

  642. for us today

  643. certainly

  644. I would imagine

  645. most of us here

  646. are of that

  647. Gentile tribe

  648. right?

  649. we have been

  650. grafted into

  651. God's family

  652. so that the issue

  653. is not necessarily

  654. Jew or Greek

  655. today

  656. it is a matter

  657. of unity

  658. between all people

  659. in the body

  660. of Christ.

  661. We are united

  662. in Christ's spirit.

  663. And so this is why

  664. Paul goes on

  665. to talk about

  666. the body of Christ

  667. the church

  668. as the body of Christ

  669. we're equipped

  670. for service

  671. we're built up

  672. in love

  673. we're united

  674. in faith.

  675. So again

  676. a question for us

  677. this morning

  678. does this describe

  679. our church?

  680. are we a church

  681. that loves

  682. to extend grace

  683. to one another

  684. rather than

  685. hold grudges?

  686. We talk a lot

  687. about the value

  688. of community groups

  689. do we desire

  690. to spend time

  691. together

  692. around God's word

  693. in times of prayer

  694. and encouragement

  695. as we put aside

  696. our work

  697. midweek

  698. or are we content

  699. to simply

  700. keep our distance

  701. to show up

  702. on a Sunday morning

  703. and be no further

  704. involved

  705. in the church?

  706. Do we long

  707. to see

  708. to be a part

  709. of the work

  710. of the church

  711. extending the gospel

  712. to our community

  713. and to our city

  714. or do we pack

  715. our schedules

  716. just so full

  717. that we have

  718. no room

  719. to participate

  720. in the ministry

  721. of the church?

  722. I think one

  723. of the greatest

  724. witnesses

  725. that we can have

  726. corporately

  727. as a church

  728. is to demonstrate

  729. the love

  730. of Christ

  731. to those around us.

  732. We want people

  733. to come through

  734. our doors

  735. to experience

  736. the warmth

  737. of fellowship

  738. and friendship.

  739. We want the gospel

  740. to be portrayed

  741. in word

  742. and in deed

  743. in personal

  744. and intangible ways

  745. to those who don't

  746. know Christ.

  747. And we see

  748. it should be

  749. our desire

  750. not only for this

  751. peace to be extended

  752. in our community

  753. in our city

  754. but truly

  755. to the ends

  756. of the earth

  757. because this is

  758. what we see

  759. at the very end

  760. of the Bible

  761. in the book

  762. of Revelation

  763. when every nation

  764. and tribe

  765. and people

  766. and language

  767. come together

  768. and stand

  769. before the throne

  770. shouting salvation

  771. belongs

  772. to our God

  773. who sits

  774. on the throne

  775. and to the Lamb.

  776. And we long

  777. for this day

  778. of peace

  779. when God's people

  780. praise

  781. our Savior

  782. in unity

  783. giving praise

  784. to our King.

  785. This is the peace

  786. that the Prince

  787. of Peace

  788. gives our church.

  789. And finally

  790. this last form

  791. of peace

  792. in inward peace.

  793. Many of you

  794. probably know

  795. that the Princess

  796. of Wales

  797. hosted her annual

  798. Christmas service

  799. just this past week

  800. and as she usually does

  801. she wrote

  802. an open letter

  803. to those who

  804. are attending

  805. the service.

  806. and I read the letter

  807. and I want to read

  808. just a few excerpts

  809. from this letter.

  810. She began

  811. at its heart

  812. Christmas speaks

  813. of love

  814. taking form

  815. in the simplest

  816. most human ways

  817. not in sentimental

  818. or grand gestures

  819. but gentle ones.

  820. These simple acts

  821. of care

  822. might seem small

  823. but they contribute

  824. to the beautiful

  825. tapestry of life

  826. to which we belong.

  827. At a time

  828. when life

  829. can sometimes

  830. feel fragmented

  831. and uncertain

  832. the Christmas season

  833. invites us

  834. to remember

  835. the power

  836. of reaching out

  837. to one another

  838. with generosity

  839. of heart

  840. understanding

  841. and hope.

  842. As the year

  843. draws to a close

  844. I hope this season

  845. will bring moments

  846. of peace

  847. and clarity

  848. and that you

  849. will feel

  850. surrounded

  851. by the same

  852. love and care

  853. that you

  854. freely offer

  855. others.

  856. It's a lovely

  857. sentiment perhaps

  858. but pretty

  859. devoid of truth.

  860. See the Princess

  861. she describes

  862. I think how many

  863. people in our

  864. culture view

  865. Christianity

  866. excuse me

  867. view Christmas

  868. there's this

  869. desire for peace

  870. but people

  871. don't think

  872. about a

  873. divine love

  874. they concentrate

  875. on a human

  876. love.

  877. They recognize

  878. disorder

  879. in our world

  880. but they

  881. think the

  882. simple remedy

  883. to this world

  884. is simply

  885. acts of kindness

  886. toward one another.

  887. The Bible

  888. shows us

  889. something very

  890. different

  891. is that disorder

  892. is not simply

  893. something that is

  894. around us

  895. disorder is

  896. something that

  897. is within us

  898. because of the

  899. fall our

  900. very desires

  901. are disordered

  902. and so we

  903. may long

  904. for wholeness

  905. but we try

  906. to find

  907. solutions of

  908. our own

  909. that maybe

  910. if I can

  911. just get

  912. that job

  913. promotion

  914. then I'll

  915. experience

  916. satisfaction.

  917. Maybe if I

  918. can only

  919. find a

  920. spouse

  921. then I'll

  922. feel complete.

  923. Maybe if I

  924. can only do

  925. well on my

  926. exams

  927. then I'll

  928. be satisfied.

  929. Maybe if I

  930. can only

  931. fill in the

  932. blank

  933. and then

  934. I'll feel

  935. peace in

  936. my life.

  937. And so

  938. for the

  939. non-believer

  940. these

  941. disordered

  942. desires

  943. only bring

  944. about this

  945. constant

  946. striving

  947. and yearning

  948. hoping that

  949. we do

  950. enough good

  951. things

  952. hoping that

  953. we can

  954. collect

  955. enough

  956. things

  957. to make

  958. us

  959. comfortable

  960. hoping that

  961. if we

  962. lean into

  963. the

  964. sentimentality

  965. of this

  966. Christmas

  967. season

  968. with lights

  969. and songs

  970. and presents

  971. then we'll

  972. experience

  973. peace.

  974. But the

  975. Bible again

  976. tells a

  977. different story

  978. in the

  979. book of

  980. James

    James 1:14

  981. chapter 1

  982. verse 14

  983. it says

  984. that each

  985. person is

  986. tempted

  987. when they

  988. are dragged

  989. away by

  990. their own

  991. desires

  992. and enticed

  993. and those

  994. desires when

  995. conceived

  996. give birth

  997. to sin

  998. and sin

  999. when it's

  1000. fully grown

  1001. give birth

  1002. to death.

  1003. Our

  1004. disordered

  1005. desires don't

  1006. bring us

  1007. life they

  1008. only bring

  1009. us death.

  1010. And so

  1011. even as

  1012. believers we

  1013. may

  1014. experience

  1015. this

  1016. tension.

  1017. Because of

  1018. the fall

  1019. we've become

  1020. less than

  1021. we ought

  1022. to be.

  1023. Yes we've

  1024. been reconciled

  1025. to God

  1026. but we still

  1027. struggle with

  1028. the reality

  1029. of our

  1030. sin.

  1031. So we

  1032. want to

  1033. obey God

  1034. we want

  1035. to follow

  1036. after him

  1037. but also

  1038. our sin

  1039. nature

  1040. still pulls

  1041. us away

  1042. and we're

  1043. so often

  1044. tempted to

  1045. turn away

  1046. from God.

  1047. And so

  1048. often we are

  1049. at war

  1050. with

  1051. ourselves.

  1052. but it's

  1053. important to

  1054. realize that

  1055. Jesus when

  1056. he restored

  1057. our relationship

  1058. to God

  1059. when he

  1060. provided this

  1061. means of

  1062. salvation

  1063. his work

  1064. does not

  1065. end there.

  1066. He gives

  1067. us his

  1068. spirit that

  1069. we may

  1070. also continue

  1071. to become

  1072. more and more

  1073. like Christ

  1074. in our

  1075. sanctification.

  1076. So yes he

  1077. provides us

  1078. in inward

  1079. peace

  1080. through the

  1081. restoration

  1082. of our

  1083. relationship

  1084. with God

  1085. but he

  1086. also wants

  1087. us to

  1088. grow in

  1089. this peace

  1090. through the

  1091. grace of

  1092. God

  1093. working

  1094. in our

  1095. lives.

  1096. And so

  1097. looking at

  1098. Philippians

    Philippians 4:7

  1099. 4

  1100. verse 7

  1101. Paul says

  1102. this

  1103. he says

  1104. the peace

  1105. of God

  1106. which transcends

  1107. our understandings

  1108. will guard

  1109. our hearts

  1110. and our minds

  1111. in Christ

  1112. Jesus.

  1113. And so

  1114. he encourages

  1115. us

  1116. whatever's

  1117. true

  1118. whatever's

  1119. noble

  1120. whatever's

  1121. right

  1122. whatever's

  1123. pure

  1124. whatever's

  1125. lovely

  1126. whatever's

  1127. admirable

  1128. whatever's

  1129. praiseworthy

  1130. think about

  1131. these things

  1132. and the

  1133. God of

  1134. peace

  1135. will be

  1136. with you.

  1137. As

  1138. believers

  1139. we grow

  1140. in the

  1141. peace

  1142. of God

  1143. as we

  1144. grow in

  1145. likeness

  1146. to Christ.

  1147. But even

  1148. so

  1149. there is

  1150. maybe a

  1151. sense of

  1152. incompleteness

  1153. because though

  1154. this peace

  1155. is a gift

  1156. to us

  1157. maybe we

  1158. recognize

  1159. we don't

  1160. experience it

  1161. to its

  1162. fullest extent

  1163. now.

  1164. It's because

  1165. we live in

  1166. this period

  1167. of the

  1168. already

  1169. and the

  1170. not yet.

  1171. And this

  1172. is what we

  1173. even celebrate

  1174. at this

  1175. Advent season.

  1176. We celebrate

  1177. that Christ

  1178. has come

  1179. but we're

  1180. also looking

  1181. forward to

  1182. when Christ

  1183. will return.

  1184. He has

  1185. come and

  1186. he's brought

  1187. us peace

  1188. but the

  1189. full experience

  1190. of that

  1191. peace is

  1192. still yet

  1193. to come.

  1194. And so

  1195. that is

  1196. our hope.

  1197. The promised

  1198. bodily

  1199. return of

  1200. Jesus

  1201. our Prince

  1202. of Peace

  1203. who will

  1204. establish

  1205. a new

  1206. heaven

  1207. and a new

  1208. earth

  1209. a better

  1210. Eden

  1211. where we

  1212. will once

  1213. again enjoy

  1214. perfect

  1215. upward

  1216. outward

  1217. and inward

  1218. peace

  1219. with our

  1220. God.

  1221. This is

  1222. what's

  1223. described

  1224. at the

  1225. end of

  1226. our

  1227. passage

  1228. in

  1229. verse

  1230. 7

  1231. of the

  1232. increase

  1233. of his

  1234. government

  1235. and of

  1236. the peace

  1237. there will

  1238. be no

  1239. end.

  1240. On the

  1241. throne of

  1242. David

  1243. and over

  1244. his kingdom

  1245. to establish

  1246. it and

  1247. uphold it

  1248. with justice

  1249. and with

  1250. righteousness

  1251. from this

  1252. time forth

  1253. and forever

  1254. more.

  1255. And so

  1256. is this

  1257. our hope?

  1258. because this

  1259. is a

  1260. prophecy

  1261. that is

  1262. true

  1263. and is

  1264. also

  1265. coming

  1266. true.

  1267. Because

  1268. Jesus

  1269. Christ

  1270. our

  1271. Prince

  1272. of Peace

  1273. has come

  1274. and he

  1275. is coming

  1276. again

  1277. to bring

  1278. full

  1279. restoration

  1280. full

  1281. completeness

  1282. full

  1283. harmony

  1284. between

  1285. God

  1286. and man.

  1287. And so

  1288. may this

  1289. be something

  1290. that we

  1291. marvel at

  1292. this Christmas

  1293. season.

  1294. Let's

  1295. pray.

  1296. Heavenly

  1297. Father we

  1298. thank you

  1299. for sending

  1300. your son

  1301. as our

  1302. Prince

  1303. of Peace.

  1304. We thank

  1305. you though

  1306. we are

  1307. responsible

  1308. for sin

  1309. you have

  1310. desired to

  1311. restore

  1312. our

  1313. relationship.

  1314. And so

  1315. we recognize

  1316. Father that

  1317. is nothing

  1318. that we

  1319. can do

  1320. to make

  1321. ourselves

  1322. right before

  1323. you.

  1324. But we

  1325. come to

  1326. the cross

  1327. and we

  1328. claim the

  1329. blood of

  1330. Jesus.

  1331. who brings

  1332. us

  1333. peace.

  1334. And so

  1335. may the

  1336. reality of

  1337. that peace

  1338. transcend

  1339. our lives

  1340. and our

  1341. relationship

  1342. with others

  1343. and our

  1344. relationship

  1345. with you.

  1346. A peace

  1347. that simply

  1348. doesn't come

  1349. through sentimentality

  1350. at Christmas

  1351. but a peace

  1352. that comes

  1353. in the

  1354. confidence

  1355. of Jesus'

  1356. work on

  1357. the cross.

  1358. May we

  1359. live with

  1360. that joy

  1361. and confidence

  1362. today.

  1363. We pray

  1364. this in

  1365. Jesus'

  1366. name.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. We have

  1369. one final

  1370. hymn of

  1371. praise.

  1372. Good Christian

  1373. men rejoice.

  1374. Please stand

  1375. and we'll

  1376. sing together.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Good Christian

  1379. men rejoice

  1380. with heart

  1381. and soul

  1382. and voice.

  1383. Give ye

  1384. heed to

  1385. what we

  1386. say.

  1387. Jesus Christ

  1388. was born

  1389. this day.

  1390. Walks and

  1391. ass

  1392. before him

  1393. bow

  1394. and he

  1395. is in

  1396. the manger

  1397. now.

  1398. Christ

  1399. is born

  1400. today.

  1401. Christ

  1402. is born

  1403. today.

  1404. Bluetooth

  1405. Bluetooth

1406. this. Christ is born for this. Good Christian men rejoice with heart and soul and voice.

1407. Now ye need not fear the grave. Jesus Christ was born to save. Calls you one and calls

1408. you all to gain his everlasting hope. Christ was born to save. Christ was born to save.

1409. Now hear these familiar words of God's blessing to his people. The Lord bless you and keep you. The

1410. Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face to you and give you peace.
