  1. Today's scripture reading is taken from Matthew chapter 5 verses 21 to 26.

    Matthew 5:21–26

  2. ! Please follow along in your own Bibles or on the screen.

  3. And if you don't have a Bible, please grab one around the hall.

  4. Our passage is on page 760 in this Bible.

  5. Starting from verse 21, we read,

  6. You have heard that it was said to those of old,

  7. You shall not murder.

  8. And whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

  9. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.

  10. Whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council.

  11. And whoever says, You fool, will be liable to the hell of fire.

  12. So, if you are offering your gift at the altar,

  13. and there remember that your brother has something against you,

  14. leave your gift there before the altar and go.

  15. First, be reconciled to your brother,

  16. and then come offer your gift.

  17. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court.

  18. Lest the accuser hand you over to the judge,

  19. and the judge to the guard,

  20. and you be put in prison.

  21. Truly, I say to you,

  22. you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

  23. This is the word of God.

  24. Good morning, Watermark.

  25. It's wonderful to be here.

  26. Wonderful to see you all.

  27. Thank you for having us.

  28. It really is fantastic to be here in your new venue this morning.

  29. And it's a privilege to be sharing with you.

  30. We really have a lot of affection for this church.

  31. We've had members of Watermark move to Singapore.

  32. Ryan and Catherine, some of you may remember them.

  33. They're part of our Mandarin church plant.

  34. Dorcas also recently moved to Singapore and has been with us.

  35. And I know there are many others as well.

  36. This morning we actually have Sean and Rachel from RHC who are visiting as well.

  37. So some RHC is here too.

  38. And that's the nature of Singapore and Hong Kong.

  39. There is a lot of movement backwards and forwards.

  40. But it really is a wonderful privilege to be speaking to you today.

  41. This church,

  42. what I always hear about this church,

  43. from people from Watermark, from Kevin, from others,

  44. two main things that always stand out to me.

  45. Firstly, your warmth and your love as a church,

  46. the sense of tight community that you have,

  47. how you care for one another.

  48. And then secondly,

  49. I always seem to hear stories of people coming to faith,

  50. coming to know Jesus in this church.

  51. And I think God has really given you a grace

  52. that has enabled you to be very evangelistically fruitful.

  53. And those are two very, very beautiful things.

  54. And I trust that as you move into this new space,

  55. which is absolutely wonderful,

  56. that God will continue to see these two things strengthened.

  57. And I'm sure that this space is about those two things happening.

  58. More and more people coming to know Jesus

  59. and be folded into this tight-knit, beautiful community.

  60. So it really is a privilege to be here today.

  61. I'm going to be speaking this morning on the healing of anger.

  62. Some of you may wonder,

  63. why on earth am I speaking about this?

  64. Did Kevin say to me,

  65. hey, if there's one thing you could talk about,

  66. could you please speak about this?

  67. I would like to let you know that that did not happen at all.

  68. But as we'll see a little bit later,

  69. this is actually a wonderful text for a couple of reasons.

  70. Firstly, I think what Jesus says applies to more of us than we think.

  71. Secondly, I think this text does help us think a little bit more

  72. about our relationships with one another.

  73. It also helps us think more deeply about God

  74. and how we view him and his work through Jesus

  75. and how that applies to our hearts.

  76. So I trust it will be encouraging for us this morning.

  77. So let me begin.

  78. I don't know how many of you have heard of Alexander the Great.

  79. He was a great conqueror.

  80. He conquered many, many lands, many nations.

  81. But there was one thing that he was unable to conquer,

  82. and that was his own anger, his own temper.

  83. And in fact, one evening during a banquet,

  84. he had had too much to drink,

  85. and some of his usual filters were taken down.

  86. And he got into an argument with one of his confidants

  87. and someone who was a very close friend,

  88. someone who had actually saved his life previously.

  89. And in his incredible rage, he ended his life

  90. and woke up in the morning and lived with a huge sense of regret,

  91. which we'll hear a little bit about later.

  92. But he was a man who had such power, such control,

  93. had so much influence over others,

  94. and yet there was something inside of him

  95. that he wasn't able to control.

  96. And I want to ask you this morning

  97. if you are or if you think you are an angry person.

  98. The reason I'm asking that this morning

  99. is because most angry people or many angry people

  100. don't think that they are angry.

  101. I never ever thought I had any anger issues.

  102. And the reason I thought I didn't have any anger issues

  103. was because it's not my habit to shout or scream.

  104. I certainly don't or never have, I don't think,

  105. thrown things around the house.

  106. And I thought, okay, well, I'm clearly not an angry person.

  107. But as time went on, I began to realize

  108. anger is far more pervasive than just those things.

  109. It has many, many forms.

  110. Some of us may have mastered the art

  111. of the passive-aggressive form of anger.

  112. Anybody here?

  113. Please do not dig your spouse in their ribs, all right?

  114. What about irritability?

  115. In fact, what convinced me that I was an angry person

  116. was when I read a Desiring God article

  117. about 12 years ago on the roots of irritability

  118. and how irritability is a form of anger

  119. that is just under a certain kind of control.

  120. And I realized I actually have a lot of,

  121. I can be very irritable.

  122. I can be very, very, very, very, very, very,

  123. maybe a certain tone of voice

  124. or body language to control.

  125. Maybe for some people here,

  126. it manifests as a kind of bitterness

  127. or a deep desire that you never act out on,

  128. but you play over and over in your mind

  129. this desire for revenge.

  130. What about in our culture,

  131. how cancel culture is such a huge thing?

  132. Isn't that a form of anger?

  133. Maybe this morning you recognize

  134. you are very easily triggered,

  135. like a tightly coiled spring,

  136. just waiting to be let loose.

  137. Some people, many people that I have had to counsel

  138. over the years struggle,

  139. it seems like legitimately,

  140. with a sense of anger at deep injustice

  141. that they have faced.

  142. People often, I find in Asia,

  143. have experienced deep, deep injustice

  144. that has affected them very, very deeply,

  145. but they found there's no way for them

  146. to resolve it, to engage,

  147. to confront,

  148. to have proper resolution of those things.

  149. And because there's no outlet,

  150. it's just grown and grown inside of them.

  151. Now, when you and I are prone to,

  152. when we are inclined to think about anger,

  153. and we think about Jesus speaking about anger,

  154. we are probably likely to think about

  155. the harm that our anger can do

  156. to those around us, loved ones, etc.

  157. And Jesus certainly is not unaware of those things.

  158. He speaks here about murder and anger.

  159. He equates those kinds of things.

  160. And so whether it's physical violence,

  161. whether it's verbal anger,

  162. whether it's emotional abuse,

  163. all of these things

  164. certainly have a very destructive force

  165. upon other people.

  166. And this is probably a good time to say

  167. that if you are or have been

  168. in any kind of an abusive relationship,

  169. it really is important

  170. for you to get safe and to get help.

  171. And nothing I say this morning

  172. should be taken as a way

  173. to justify you remaining in a situation

  174. that you are physically unsafe in.

  175. But when we're inclined to think about anger,

  176. we probably think about the harm

  177. that our anger may do to others.

  178. But I want us to notice here

  179. in our text today,

  180. the way Jesus is motivating us

  181. is not by getting us to think about

  182. the harm it will do to others,

  183. though that's absolutely true.

  184. He actually wants us to think

  185. about the harm that our anger does

  186. not to other people,

  187. but does to us.

  188. So look at verse 22,

  189. verse 25, verse 26.

  190. I say to you,

  191. everyone who's angry with his brother

  192. will be liable to judgment.

  193. Whoever insults his brother

  194. will be liable to the council.

  195. Whoever says you fool

  196. will be liable to the hell of fire.

  197. Come quickly to terms with your accuser

  198. while you're going with him to the court,

  199. lest your accuser hand you over to the judge

  200. and the judge to the God

  201. and you be put in prison.

  202. Truly I say,

  203. you will never get out

  204. until you've paid the last penny.

  205. Interestingly here,

  206. Jesus is trying to motivate us

  207. by getting us to think about

  208. anger's effect upon our own hearts,

  209. spiritually and relationally.

  210. And this means,

  211. I think every one of us recognize

  212. we probably do need some help

  213. in this regard.

  214. And years of pastoral ministry

  215. have shown me

  216. people typically need help

  217. in this area

  218. in two ways.

  219. Number one,

  220. dealing with a feeling of anger

  221. in our own hearts.

  222. How do we let this go?

  223. Can we?

  224. And secondly,

  225. knowing how to constructively engage

  226. with those

  227. that we have conflicts with.

  228. And fortunately,

  229. in this passage today,

  230. Jesus does mention both of these.

  231. So we'll see two things

  232. briefly this morning.

  233. Firstly,

  234. the problem with anger

  235. and secondly,

  236. a path out of anger.

  237. So let's start with

  238. the path,

  239. the problem of anger.

  240. When we think about this text,

  241. what Jesus is doing,

  242. we don't have time

  243. to look at it in detail.

  244. Jesus is picking up aspects

  245. of the Old Testament law,

  246. the Torah,

  247. and he is fleshing them out

  248. by showing the true heart

  249. of the law.

  250. And one good way

  251. to think about

  252. the Old Testament law

  253. is that what the law

  254. in the Old Testament

  255. negatively prohibits,

  256. it does so in order

  257. to positively encourage

  258. the opposite behavior.

  259. It's like if

  260. Kev or one of the leaders

  261. here says,

  262. we'd really like to ask you

  263. not to be late on Sunday.

  264. They're not just asking you

  265. not to be late,

  266. they're asking you

  267. to positively be

  268. on time and early, right?

  269. And so,

  270. when the law speaks about

  271. not doing various things,

  272. it is urging us

  273. to love,

  274. to care for God's,

  275. to care for those

  276. around us.

  277. So,

  278. let's ask ourselves,

  279. what exactly is this anger?

  280. In verse 21 and 22,

  281. let's read in our text,

  282. Jesus says,

  283. you've heard it was said

  284. to those of old,

  285. you shall not murder

  286. and whoever murders

  287. will be liable to judgment.

  288. But I say to you,

  289. everyone who's angry

  290. with his brother

  291. will be liable to judgment.

  292. Whoever insults his brother

  293. will be liable

  294. to the council.

  295. Whoever says,

  296. you fool,

  297. will be liable

  298. to the hell of fire.

  299. Jesus here is really

  300. getting to the spirit

  301. of the law.

  302. He's trying to show us

  303. the heart of it.

  304. We think even of

  305. the Old Testament,

  306. how the Old Testament

  307. even had laws

  308. about like building parapets

  309. or balustrades

  310. on top of the roof

  311. of your house

  312. lest somebody fall off

  313. by accident.

  314. The heart of that

  315. is this care

  316. and concern

  317. for other people

  318. that is so deeply

  319. concerned for their well-being

  320. that when you're building

  321. a house,

  322. you're thinking

  323. about safety precautions

  324. lest somebody

  325. accidentally harm themselves.

  326. And in that spirit

  327. of the law,

  328. Jesus is saying

  329. the way that we view

  330. and treat

  331. and feel in our hearts

  332. toward other people

  333. really, really matters.

  334. And I think the three

  335. clauses or phrases

  336. Jesus uses here

  337. help us think

  338. a little bit about anger.

  339. He speaks about being angry,

  340. he speaks about insulting,

  341. and he speaks about

  342. calling someone a fool.

  343. I think we can think

  344. of these as like

  345. three kind of facets

  346. of the diamond of anger

  347. that help us see

  348. what he's talking about.

  349. The word anger

  350. is something which would

  351. exist in our heart.

  352. the word is kind of

  353. like a burning rage

  354. that you nurse,

  355. like a fire

  356. that is continuing

  357. to burn inside of you.

  358. The word insult,

  359. this is when you

  360. demean someone.

  361. You make a judgment

  362. of them.

  363. You judge them

  364. by defining them

  365. in your own heart

  366. and your own mind.

  367. You say to them,

  368. I,

  369. I mean,

  370. internally in your heart,

  371. I declare you

  372. to be an idiot.

  373. All right?

  374. There's this sense

  375. that you're summing them up

  376. and concluding

  377. who they are.

  378. And then the last word,

  379. fool,

  380. interestingly,

  381. the Greek word

  382. is the root of which

  383. is the word

  384. that in English

  385. we sometimes,

  386. the word moron,

  387. when you call someone

  388. a moron,

  389. it's like when you call

  390. someone an airhead

  391. or a moron.

  392. I don't know how you

  393. typically use that language.

  394. You don't have to tell me

  395. about it right now.

  396. But typically,

  397. if you call someone

  398. a moron

  399. or an idiot like that,

  400. the way that it's often used

  401. is in a very dismissive

  402. kind of a way.

  403. That guy's just a moron.

  404. I do not have time for you.

  405. Can you just get out of my way

  406. and out of my life?

  407. And what is being spoken of here

  408. is a kind of indifference,

  409. a dismissing,

  410. not treating someone

  411. as they really should be treated.

  412. And if we put all these

  413. three things together,

  414. I think a good definition

  415. that we can get

  416. of anger

  417. that the kind of anger

  418. Jesus is referring to here

  419. is an attitude of heart

  420. that demeans

  421. the other person,

  422. setting yourself up

  423. as a God

  424. over them

  425. to define,

  426. judge,

  427. and then ultimately

  428. dismiss them.

  429. And

  430. I think this

  431. captures what Jesus

  432. is speaking of here.

  433. Sometimes we want to

  434. nurse a kind of bitterness

  435. because

  436. we may legitimately

  437. see things

  438. that have happened to us

  439. that we think are wrong

  440. and may legitimately

  441. have been wrong.

  442. We legitimately

  443. have suffered.

  444. We do not believe

  445. that there is a God

  446. of justice

  447. who will ultimately

  448. hold all people

  449. to account.

  450. And we think

  451. if I don't exact

  452. my revenge on them,

  453. even if that revenge

  454. is just my own anger

  455. toward them

  456. in my own heart,

  457. there will be no justice.

  458. And therefore,

  459. because we don't fear God

  460. or we don't believe

  461. that he is there

  462. to execute justice,

  463. we take it upon

  464. ourselves to do.

  465. We judge,

  466. we dismiss,

  467. we write off,

  468. we nurse grudges

  469. in this way.

  470. Now,

  471. there are some

  472. who at a point

  473. like this

  474. would probably

  475. and legitimately

  476. be asking,

  477. hold on,

  478. hold on.

  479. What about

  480. those people

  481. in the world

  482. who really,

  483. really do commit

  484. great acts of evil?

  485. How do we think

  486. about such people?

  487. Friends,

  488. the Bible,

  489. the Christian Bible

  490. certainly gives us

  491. very clear categories

  492. in which to understand

  493. evil.

  494. If we don't have God,

  495. if we don't have

  496. his righteousness,

  497. we don't have

  498. proper categories

  499. in which to really

  500. understand that

  501. which is right and wrong.

  502. And the scriptures

  503. really do affirm

  504. and show us

  505. there are actions

  506. and ways of treating

  507. people that are wicked

  508. and certainly

  509. are worthy

  510. of judgment.

  511. And the Bible

  512. is not saying

  513. that we are to act

  514. as though everybody's

  515. behavior is acceptable

  516. and fine.

  517. The scriptures

  518. themselves give us

  519. those categories

  520. in which to make

  521. right judgments.

  522. So when we see

  523. people who legitimately

  524. do do evil

  525. and wicked things

  526. as Christians,

  527. I want to tell us

  528. this morning,

  529. it's entirely possible,

  530. it's right actually,

  531. for us to hate evil,

  532. for us to hate

  533. injustice,

  534. to legitimately see

  535. where we may have

  536. been wronged,

  537. but we refrain

  538. from taking the place

  539. of God ourselves.

  540. It may be possible

  541. in certain situations

  542. that we do need

  543. to react to

  544. somebody else's evil

  545. or their sin.

  546. It could be possible

  547. for Christians

  548. and right in some

  549. circumstances,

  550. if you see someone

  551. else being harmed,

  552. for you even to step in

  553. and forcibly maybe

  554. stop somebody from

  555. sinning or harming

  556. another person,

  557. that's absolutely

  558. legitimate and that's

  559. what the Bible

  560. would describe as

  561. love.

  562. But when in our

  563. hearts we don't just

  564. want to see what is

  565. wrong being stopped,

  566. but we want to see

  567. the wrongdoer

  568. destroyed,

  569. when we want to

  570. see them pay

  571. for their sins,

  572. we want them to be

  573. destroyed,

  574. we dismiss them,

  575. we're moving from

  576. just enacting

  577. justice and trying

  578. to love other people

  579. rightly and we're

  580. taking the place of

  581. God in our own

  582. hearts.

  583. We are moving into

  584. an unrighteous anger

  585. that can be evil

  586. itself.

  587. And friends,

  588. I want us to notice

  589. that Jesus says

  590. this kind of anger

  591. is really bad.

  592. it's really bad for

  593. us both spiritually,

  594. it's really bad for

  595. us relationally.

  596. How is it bad for

  597. us spiritually?

  598. Well,

  599. let's just notice

  600. what he says.

  601. If you go back and

  602. look at the text,

  603. I mean,

  604. think about the

  605. words that Jesus

  606. speaks about.

  607. He speaks about the

  608. danger of the

  609. council.

  610. He speaks ultimately

  611. about the danger of

  612. hell.

  613. What is Jesus saying

  614. here?

  615. I mean,

  616. hell in Matthew's

  617. gospel is a place

  618. where we are alienated

  619. from the presence of

  620. God.

  621. where we're

  622. separated from him

  623. and ultimately are

  624. destroyed.

  625. Jesus is really

  626. warning us to say,

  627. if we nurse this

  628. kind of thing where

  629. we're taking the

  630. place of God,

  631. dismissing people,

  632. wanting them

  633. destroyed,

  634. setting ourselves as

  635. the ultimate judge

  636. over them,

  637. this is going to

  638. have profound

  639. spiritual effects

  640. upon us.

  641. Now,

  642. I think this is so

  643. bad for at least

  644. three reasons.

  645. Firstly,

  646. unrighteous anger

  647. slanders

  648. the image of God.

  649. Unrighteous anger

  650. slanders the image

  651. of God.

  652. It's one of the

  653. most beautiful and

  654. wonderful teachings

  655. of the scriptures that

  656. every single human

  657. being is made in the

  658. image of God.

  659. God.

  660. And the Bible tells us

  661. that sin has

  662. marred that image.

  663. We do not reflect

  664. God's glory perfectly.

  665. In fact,

  666. many of us reflect it

  667. very,

  668. very poorly.

  669. And yet the

  670. scriptures say,

  671. even after the

  672. fall,

  673. we still retain

  674. the dignity

  675. of being God's

  676. image bearers,

  677. though we reflect it

  678. so badly.

  679. and we're to

  680. treat other

  681. Christians,

  682. sorry,

  683. not just other

  684. Christians,

  685. other human

  686. beings,

  687. all human

  688. beings,

  689. as image

  690. bearers of

  691. God.

  692. Now,

  693. I am from

  694. Singapore,

  695. and you would

  696. know in this

  697. part of the

  698. world there are

  699. many temples

  700. that are on

  701. just about every

  702. corner.

  703. Can you imagine

  704. how people would

  705. feel,

  706. worshippers in a

  707. temple around the

  708. corner would feel

  709. if somebody walked

  710. in with a

  711. massive axe

  712. and began to

  713. swing at some

  714. of the idols

  715. and gods that

  716. are set up in

  717. that temple.

  718. It would be

  719. outrageous.

  720. And the

  721. scriptures show us

  722. that this entire

  723. creation,

  724. this world that

  725. we live in,

  726. is a temple to

  727. the glory of God

  728. with every human

  729. being,

  730. what,

  731. seven,

  732. eight billion of

  733. them on the

  734. planet at the

  735. moment,

  736. image bearers of

  737. God.

  738. And the way

  739. that we treat

  740. those image

  741. bearers and view

  742. them is a

  743. reflection of

  744. our view toward

  745. God at some

  746. level.

  747. So unrighteous

  748. anger is

  749. particularly bad

  750. because we are

  751. slandering the

  752. image of God

  753. which speaks

  754. something to

  755. how we're

  756. treating God

  757. himself.

  758. Secondly,

  759. unrighteous anger,

  760. I think even more

  761. seriously,

  762. sets us up in

  763. our own hearts

  764. to take the

  765. place of God.

  766. When we decide

  767. that we will be

  768. the ultimate

  769. judge,

  770. we will make

  771. permanent

  772. decisions about

  773. someone,

  774. dismiss them

  775. in a certain

  776. way,

  777. we are setting

  778. ourselves up

  779. in the place

  780. of God.

  781. And friends,

  782. the scriptures

  783. show us we

  784. cannot do this

  785. without this

  786. having a profound

  787. effect upon our

  788. own hearts.

  789. The Bible shows

  790. us so clearly

  791. over and over

  792. whenever we

  793. displace God,

  794. we end up

  795. idolizing

  796. something or

  797. someone else.

  798. In fact,

  799. I've seen so

  800. often how people

  801. who trust in

  802. people above

  803. God,

  804. then when those

  805. people let

  806. them down and

  807. disappoint them,

  808. there's a deep

  809. anger that begins

  810. to grow.

  811. But more than

  812. that,

  813. our hearts do

  814. become profoundly

  815. disordered when

  816. we take the

  817. place of God.

  818. Romans 1 shows

  819. us that when

  820. we replace God

  821. and we set

  822. ourselves up as

  823. gods,

  824. one of the

  825. effects of that

  826. is a kind of

  827. spiritual blindness

  828. in our lives.

  829. I think the

  830. language that

  831. Romans 1 uses

  832. is we become

  833. futile in our

  834. thinking.

  835. I don't know

  836. how many of

  837. you have ever

  838. seen this play

  839. out in your

  840. own life.

  841. This means that

  842. when other

  843. people sin

  844. against us,

  845. and we become

  846. angry with

  847. them,

  848. we become

  849. blind to our

  850. own sinful

  851. response to

  852. their sin.

  853. I don't know

  854. if this has

  855. ever happened

  856. to you.

  857. Someone sins

  858. against us,

  859. and we feel

  860. we're just

  861. filled with a

  862. huge sense of

  863. rage.

  864. But instead

  865. of being

  866. aware of

  867. how wrong

  868. our anger

  869. is,

  870. and how

  871. we're now

  872. treating them

  873. in a very

  874. unfair way,

  875. or judging

  876. them,

  877. or misunderstanding

  878. their motives,

  879. we're just

  880. locked in and

  881. focused on

  882. their own

  883. errors.

  884. And so

  885. often,

  886. I find for

  887. myself,

  888. I'm tempted

  889. into sin

  890. because someone

  891. sinned against

  892. me.

  893. And just

  894. because someone

  895. sinned against

  896. me doesn't

  897. justify me

  898. sinning against

  899. them,

  900. but in my

  901. anger,

  902. I get blind

  903. to my own

  904. sinful response

  905. to them.

  906. And if

  907. you're like

  908. me,

  909. then you

  910. probably start

  911. to feel

  912. justified.

  913. You think

  914. certain things,

  915. you act in

  916. a certain

  917. way,

  918. maybe indulge

  919. in more

  920. gossip about

  921. them,

  922. you say

  923. things about

  924. them,

  925. scripture clearly

  926. says that we

  927. shouldn't do,

  928. but you're

  929. entirely blind

  930. to it because

  931. it feels

  932. entirely justified

  933. because of

  934. how bad

  935. they are.

  936. In other

  937. words,

  938. when we set

  939. ourselves up

  940. in this

  941. way,

  942. we can see

  943. even in

  944. our own

  945. hearts,

  946. there's a

  947. blindness

  948. that creeps

  949. in,

  950. that affects

  951. us.

  952. And finally,

  953. unrighteous

  954. anger shows,

  955. I think most

  956. seriously,

  957. Matthew 6 will

  958. show us in

  959. the next

  960. chapter,

  961. that we have

  962. not properly

  963. received God's

  964. mercy.

  965. There's something

  966. in our own

  967. hearts that

  968. have not

  969. truly understood

  970. the nature

  971. of who God

  972. is.

  973. What about

  974. relationally?

  975. And this,

  976. I don't need to

  977. spend as much

  978. time on this

  979. morning,

  980. the passage

  981. shows relationally

  982. even in terms

  983. of just your

  984. own self.

  985. There's an

  986. accuser,

  987. there's the

  988. threat of

  989. court,

  990. of jail,

  991. not getting

  992. out until

  993. you've paid

  994. the last

  995. penny.

  996. I mean,

  997. this text is

  998. saying there

  999. can be real

  1000. social and

  1001. relational and

  1002. practical

  1003. implications to

  1004. not managing

  1005. our anger

  1006. properly.

  1007. And I don't

  1008. know how many

  1009. of you,

  1010. maybe it's

  1011. true of you

  1012. this morning,

  1013. maybe you

  1014. know others,

  1015. who find

  1016. themselves trapped

  1017. in relational

  1018. prisons because

  1019. of unforgiveness,

  1020. because of

  1021. bitterness,

  1022. because of

  1023. anger.

  1024. You refuse to

  1025. forgive,

  1026. you refuse to

  1027. let something

  1028. go,

  1029. and you find

  1030. yourself more

  1031. and more

  1032. estranged,

  1033. withdrawn.

  1034. It begins to

  1035. affect you more

  1036. and more.

  1037. Alexander the

  1038. Great,

  1039. when he woke

  1040. up the next

  1041. morning and

  1042. realized what

  1043. he had done,

  1044. it affected

  1045. his life

  1046. profoundly,

  1047. plunged into

  1048. a deep

  1049. depression,

  1050. and he

  1051. could hardly

  1052. recover from

  1053. it.

  1054. What about

  1055. ending his

  1056. life on

  1057. multiple

  1058. times?

  1059. It was

  1060. deep

  1061. self-loathing.

  1062. Friends,

  1063. I'm sure we

  1064. can think of

  1065. multiple ways

  1066. these kinds

  1067. of things

  1068. affect us.

  1069. In other

  1070. words,

  1071. the effect

  1072. is not

  1073. even just

  1074. on those

  1075. that we

  1076. are angry

  1077. with,

  1078. and that

  1079. would take

  1080. another

  1081. entire

  1082. sermon

  1083. to unpack

  1084. those

  1085. things.

  1086. But let's

  1087. remember here,

  1088. Jesus is

  1089. actually

  1090. motivating us

  1091. by asking,

  1092. what does this

  1093. do to our

  1094. own hearts?

  1095. spiritually,

  1096. our relationship

  1097. with God,

  1098. our view

  1099. of him,

  1100. our understanding

  1101. of his mercy,

  1102. our sense

  1103. of self,

  1104. and all of

  1105. this means,

  1106. friends,

  1107. that these

  1108. anger issues

  1109. that Jesus

  1110. is talking

  1111. about here

  1112. are really

  1113. not minor.

  1114. They are

  1115. significant,

  1116. and they're

  1117. things we need

  1118. to pay

  1119. close attention

  1120. to.

  1121. It may be

  1122. a good idea,

  1123. don't do it

  1124. now,

  1125. but to ask

  1126. a friend

  1127. if you feel

  1128. like,

  1129. I don't

  1130. have any

  1131. anger issues

  1132. at all.

  1133. Maybe you

  1134. can ask

  1135. a friend,

  1136. a close

  1137. friend,

  1138. ask a

  1139. spouse,

  1140. pick your

  1141. moment

  1142. carefully,

  1143. wait till

  1144. there's time

  1145. for a

  1146. longish

  1147. conversation.

  1148. I see

  1149. some of

  1150. you jabbing

  1151. one another

  1152. here and

  1153. there,

  1154. but we

  1155. really should

  1156. take this

  1157. seriously.

  1158. So what

  1159. exactly is

  1160. the path

  1161. out of

  1162. anger?

  1163. And I

  1164. think as I

  1165. mentioned

  1166. earlier,

  1167. we really

  1168. need help

  1169. with this

  1170. command in

  1171. two ways.

  1172. I think

  1173. we need

  1174. help with

  1175. both dealing

  1176. with the

  1177. negative

  1178. emotions and

  1179. feelings that

  1180. we feel

  1181. in our

  1182. own

  1183. hearts,

  1184. and then

  1185. secondly,

  1186. knowing just

  1187. some tips

  1188. or some

  1189. help and

  1190. how do we

  1191. practically reach

  1192. out to

  1193. others?

  1194. And fortunately,

  1195. Jesus does

  1196. mention both

  1197. of these.

  1198. So let's

  1199. look firstly

  1200. at the

  1201. vertical path,

  1202. our own

  1203. hearts.

  1204. Jesus in

  1205. the Sermon

  1206. on the

  1207. Mount has

  1208. been speaking

  1209. to his

  1210. people over

  1211. and over

  1212. about their

  1213. need for a

  1214. deeper

  1215. righteousness,

  1216. a righteousness

  1217. that is rooted

  1218. in a correct

  1219. view of God,

  1220. not a dismissing

  1221. of God,

  1222. not a forgetting

  1223. of him,

  1224. not a taking

  1225. the place

  1226. of him,

  1227. not fearing

  1228. that God

  1229. won't do

  1230. anything in

  1231. the future

  1232. and therefore

  1233. we step

  1234. in and say

  1235. no one's

  1236. going to

  1237. stand up

  1238. for me,

  1239. I will

  1240. have to

  1241. take action,

  1242. but a

  1243. right trust,

  1244. reverence,

  1245. awe of the

  1246. God of the

  1247. Bible as

  1248. he shows

  1249. himself to

  1250. be.

  1251. We need

  1252. a right

  1253. view,

  1254. a right

  1255. fear,

  1256. a right

  1257. healthy

  1258. Christian

  1259. fear of

  1260. the Lord.

  1261. And this

  1262. right fear

  1263. needs to

  1264. change our

  1265. hearts,

  1266. Jesus needs

  1267. to change

  1268. our hearts

  1269. at a deep

  1270. level so we

  1271. can worship

  1272. and trust

  1273. him with a

  1274. pure heart,

  1275. seeing right

  1276. and wrong,

  1277. not becoming

  1278. those who

  1279. dismiss wickedness

  1280. and say it

  1281. doesn't matter,

  1282. you can see

  1283. clearly,

  1284. but who

  1285. respond from

  1286. a pure

  1287. heart that's

  1288. not marked

  1289. by taking

  1290. the place

  1291. of God

  1292. or being

  1293. bitter.

  1294. How exactly

  1295. do we do

  1296. this?

  1297. And I think

  1298. the scriptures

  1299. show us that

  1300. when we are

  1301. sinned against,

  1302. we are supposed

  1303. to come to

  1304. our God,

  1305. our God of

  1306. justice,

  1307. and to

  1308. entrust our

  1309. justice to

  1310. him.

  1311. Friends,

  1312. the scriptures

  1313. show us that

  1314. our God is

  1315. indeed a God

  1316. who believes

  1317. in justice,

  1318. is profoundly

  1319. committed to

  1320. our justice,

  1321. and we

  1322. can entrust

  1323. the wrongs

  1324. that are

  1325. done to

  1326. us into

  1327. his hands,

  1328. and we

  1329. can trust

  1330. him.

  1331. We serve

  1332. a God,

  1333. friends,

  1334. who

  1335. mercifully

  1336. treats you

  1337. and I

  1338. far better

  1339. than,

  1340. he treats

  1341. us far

  1342. better than

  1343. those we

  1344. treat who

  1345. sinned against

  1346. us.

  1347. The scriptures

  1348. show us just

  1349. the depth of

  1350. our own sins

  1351. against God.

  1352. God,

  1353. if we

  1354. just think

  1355. this morning

  1356. about our

  1357. own anger,

  1358. we just

  1359. think about

  1360. the enormity

  1361. of that

  1362. sin against

  1363. God,

  1364. and yet,

  1365. how does

  1366. God respond

  1367. and treat

  1368. us when

  1369. we sin

  1370. against him

  1371. and legitimately

  1372. grieve him?

  1373. Friends,

  1374. the Bible

  1375. tells us that

  1376. rather than

  1377. destroying

  1378. those who've

  1379. sinned against

  1380. God,

  1381. whom he has

  1382. every right to

  1383. do,

  1384. he has every

  1385. right to do

  1386. so,

  1387. rather than

  1388. dismissing

  1389. us,

  1390. saying,

  1391. I don't

  1392. have time

  1393. for you,

  1394. the scriptures

  1395. show us in

  1396. the deep

  1397. heart of

  1398. our God,

  1399. it is a

  1400. love and

  1401. a compassion

  1402. and a

  1403. care even

  1404. for those

  1405. who've

  1406. wronged

  1407. him,

  1408. that sins

  1409. Jesus,

  1410. he will

  1411. leave the

  1412. comforts of

  1413. heaven to

  1414. pursue us,

  1415. to love

  1416. us,

  1417. to take on

  1418. the consequences

  1419. of our sin

  1420. himself in

  1421. mercy,

  1422. so that

  1423. ultimately our

  1424. hearts can

  1425. be healed.

  1426. Though we

  1427. had wronged

  1428. him,

  1429. how does

  1430. God deal

  1431. with us?

  1432. Does he

  1433. pout in

  1434. heaven?

  1435. Do we see

  1436. him passive

  1437. aggressive in

  1438. the scriptures?

  1439. Is that how

  1440. God responds?

  1441. No,

  1442. he pursues

  1443. us with a

  1444. soft and a

  1445. tender heart

  1446. full of

  1447. mercy.

  1448. God,

  1449. friends,

  1450. truly treats

  1451. you and I

  1452. as his

  1453. image bearers,

  1454. as profoundly

  1455. precious to

  1456. him,

  1457. not dismissing

  1458. us.

  1459. And in

  1460. fact,

  1461. when there

  1462. is and

  1463. was a

  1464. profound

  1465. debt to

  1466. be paid

  1467. because of

  1468. the wrong

  1469. of our

  1470. sins and

  1471. what we've

  1472. done wrong,

  1473. the Bible

  1474. says Jesus

  1475. comes to

  1476. pay that

  1477. debt.

  1478. And he

  1479. paid it

  1480. down to

  1481. the last

  1482. penny.

  1483. He was

  1484. thrown into

  1485. the jail of

  1486. death and

  1487. hell for us.

  1488. he didn't

  1489. get out

  1490. until he

  1491. paid the

  1492. last penny

  1493. for you

  1494. and I,

  1495. the debt

  1496. of our

  1497. injustice.

  1498. Friends,

  1499. you know what

  1500. this shows

  1501. us, just

  1502. as a quick

  1503. aside, when

  1504. you and I

  1505. try to take

  1506. the place

  1507. of God and

  1508. enact justice

  1509. on other

  1510. people, we're

  1511. playing God

  1512. very badly.

  1513. We're not

  1514. even acting

  1515. like the

  1516. true God.

  1517. We can

  1518. praise God

  1519. this morning

  1520. that he is

  1521. far, far

  1522. better than

  1523. you and I.

  1524. And the

  1525. question is,

  1526. how does

  1527. the way God

  1528. treats us

  1529. then heal

  1530. our hearts?

  1531. Two ways

  1532. for us to

  1533. reflect on.

  1534. Firstly,

  1535. what Jesus

  1536. does for us

  1537. and how God

  1538. loves his

  1539. people who

  1540. have wronged

  1541. him so

  1542. deeply.

  1543. This firstly

  1544. reconnects our

  1545. hearts to

  1546. God so that

  1547. we now have a

  1548. relationship with

  1549. him and can

  1550. trust our

  1551. heavenly father

  1552. to fulfill

  1553. all justice

  1554. on our behalf.

  1555. What does this

  1556. look like and

  1557. what does this

  1558. mean?

  1559. Because Jesus

  1560. has reconciled

  1561. us to God,

  1562. our relationship

  1563. with God is

  1564. restored.

  1565. We now love

  1566. God above

  1567. everything else.

  1568. We don't need

  1569. to idolize other

  1570. people and get

  1571. their approval or

  1572. something from

  1573. them, which

  1574. when we don't

  1575. get makes us

  1576. angry because

  1577. we worship and

  1578. trust and love

  1579. and find everything

  1580. we need from

  1581. our father

  1582. above.

  1583. This also

  1584. means that we

  1585. are far quicker

  1586. to see our

  1587. own sins of

  1588. anger in

  1589. reaction to

  1590. other people's

  1591. sins.

  1592. To trust God

  1593. in those

  1594. areas.

  1595. But maybe even

  1596. more significantly,

  1597. because of what

  1598. Jesus has done at

  1599. the cross,

  1600. because Christ has

  1601. come to suffer

  1602. and die for all

  1603. of our sins,

  1604. this in one

  1605. level elevates

  1606. God's justice

  1607. in our view.

  1608. God,

  1609. friends,

  1610. surely,

  1611. the scriptures

  1612. say,

  1613. will deal with

  1614. everything that is

  1615. wrong in this

  1616. world one day.

  1617. the cross is

  1618. not a dismissing

  1619. of God's

  1620. justice and

  1621. God saying

  1622. justice doesn't

  1623. matter.

  1624. The cross is

  1625. God saying

  1626. justice does

  1627. matter.

  1628. Everything

  1629. wrong must be

  1630. exposed and

  1631. revealed and

  1632. dealt with.

  1633. And friends,

  1634. the cross shows

  1635. us that every

  1636. wickedness done

  1637. to you,

  1638. every bit of

  1639. evil that you

  1640. have faced at

  1641. the hands of

  1642. other people,

  1643. will one day

  1644. certainly be

  1645. dealt with.

  1646. Either those

  1647. people who

  1648. have committed

  1649. sin against

  1650. you will

  1651. confess their

  1652. sins to

  1653. Jesus and

  1654. have Jesus

  1655. carry them

  1656. at the cross

  1657. where justice

  1658. is done and

  1659. those sins are

  1660. fully dealt

  1661. with,

  1662. or if they

  1663. refuse to do

  1664. that,

  1665. they will have

  1666. to stand

  1667. themselves before

  1668. God one day

  1669. and give an

  1670. account for

  1671. their own

  1672. sins where

  1673. justice will

  1674. be done.

  1675. Friends,

  1676. the cross is

  1677. the instrument,

  1678. the means by

  1679. which we see

  1680. God's love,

  1681. but at the

  1682. same time,

  1683. it's the

  1684. place where

  1685. we are

  1686. guaranteed,

  1687. it underlines

  1688. the commitment

  1689. God himself

  1690. has to

  1691. justice.

  1692. And so when

  1693. we stare at

  1694. that, when

  1695. we look at

  1696. that this

  1697. morning, it

  1698. strengthens our

  1699. sense that

  1700. God we serve

  1701. is a God of

  1702. justice who

  1703. will make

  1704. things right.

  1705. It's possible

  1706. those who

  1707. have sinned

  1708. against us

  1709. will be

  1710. forgiven just

  1711. as we've

  1712. been forgiven

  1713. of our sins.

  1714. But if not,

  1715. it will be

  1716. done.

  1717. Justice will

  1718. be seen

  1719. one day.

  1720. And this

  1721. means, secondly,

  1722. friends, if you

  1723. hear this

  1724. morning struggling

  1725. with wickedness

  1726. done to you,

  1727. you can go to

  1728. Jesus who

  1729. has literally

  1730. himself carried

  1731. on the cross

  1732. the weight,

  1733. the guilt of

  1734. many wicked

  1735. peoples, the

  1736. evil that they've

  1737. committed.

  1738. Jesus understands

  1739. that.

  1740. You can go to

  1741. him today.

  1742. This trust that

  1743. we can have now

  1744. in Jesus, that

  1745. he will make

  1746. this right,

  1747. means you

  1748. and I this

  1749. morning can

  1750. set aside our

  1751. role of

  1752. demanding justice

  1753. on our own

  1754. terms right

  1755. here and

  1756. now.

  1757. Now, this

  1758. is a short

  1759. sermon.

  1760. I only have

  1761. another seven

  1762. or eight

  1763. minutes to

  1764. go.

  1765. We can't

  1766. deal with

  1767. all the

  1768. nuances and

  1769. complexities.

  1770. Sometimes the

  1771. most loving

  1772. thing to do

  1773. for someone is

  1774. to go to

  1775. the police

  1776. and they

  1777. will need

  1778. to really

  1779. pay the

  1780. consequences.

  1781. That is

  1782. often the

  1783. way that you

  1784. love your

  1785. neighbor.

  1786. If someone's

  1787. committing crimes,

  1788. it's going to

  1789. affect other

  1790. people.

  1791. You lodge a

  1792. complaint, you

  1793. go to the

  1794. police, and

  1795. that is one

  1796. way that justice

  1797. gets done.

  1798. I'm speaking

  1799. here about our

  1800. own sense of

  1801. wanting, our

  1802. own vindication

  1803. and revenge

  1804. upon someone

  1805. where we are

  1806. taking the place

  1807. of God in

  1808. their life.

  1809. And only when

  1810. we trust God

  1811. as our true

  1812. judge can we

  1813. release this

  1814. bitterness and

  1815. this anger and

  1816. entrust it into

  1817. his hands.

  1818. And the

  1819. cross shows

  1820. us we can

  1821. do that

  1822. knowing it

  1823. will certainly

  1824. be dealt

  1825. with one

  1826. day.

  1827. So let me

  1828. just pause for

  1829. a moment and

  1830. just ask this

  1831. morning, what

  1832. maybe are some

  1833. of the seeds

  1834. of bitterness

  1835. or maybe

  1836. indifference or

  1837. dismissing others

  1838. that you're

  1839. watering in your

  1840. heart this

  1841. morning?

  1842. Friends, every

  1843. one of us can

  1844. lay an axe

  1845. to the root of

  1846. that bitterness

  1847. in our hearts

  1848. this morning.

  1849. And we do it

  1850. by laying the

  1851. axe of the

  1852. gospel to our

  1853. hearts.

  1854. God's mercy to

  1855. us, the

  1856. certainty that

  1857. God will deal

  1858. with these

  1859. things and we

  1860. entrust our

  1861. lives and even

  1862. the grievances

  1863. we have into

  1864. his hands

  1865. knowing that he

  1866. will do so.

  1867. And we ask

  1868. him to make

  1869. us to be like

  1870. himself.

  1871. ask his

  1872. spirit to be

  1873. at work in

  1874. us.

  1875. And secondly,

  1876. the way the

  1877. gospel affects

  1878. and heals

  1879. our hearts is

  1880. it reconnects

  1881. our hearts to

  1882. God, not

  1883. just so that

  1884. we know that

  1885. justice will

  1886. one day be

  1887. done, but it

  1888. reconnects our

  1889. hearts to God

  1890. so that deep

  1891. in our hearts

  1892. we begin to

  1893. feel a sense

  1894. of mercy

  1895. toward others

  1896. just as you

  1897. and I have

  1898. received the

  1899. mercy of

  1900. Jesus.

  1901. Friends, God's

  1902. mercy toward

  1903. us, his

  1904. forgiveness of

  1905. our sins

  1906. against him

  1907. turns our

  1908. hearts toward

  1909. God in a

  1910. deep way

  1911. which then

  1912. begins to

  1913. soften our

  1914. hearts toward

  1915. others as

  1916. well.

  1917. We can now

  1918. see other

  1919. people's sins

  1920. without being

  1921. self-righteous

  1922. and just judging

  1923. and dismissing

  1924. them because we

  1925. recognize, yep,

  1926. they may really

  1927. have sinned,

  1928. I'm a sinner

  1929. too in need of

  1930. God's grace.

  1931. And we realize

  1932. we've received

  1933. such profound

  1934. mercy at the

  1935. hands of God

  1936. as well.

  1937. Friends, Jesus

  1938. helps us see

  1939. the value of

  1940. every person,

  1941. even those who

  1942. are our enemies

  1943. which he's going

  1944. to go on later

  1945. on in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1946. chapter 5 and

  1947. speak to us

  1948. about.

  1949. And so when we

  1950. see Jesus and

  1951. who he is and

  1952. what he's done,

  1953. it both deals

  1954. with our desire

  1955. for revenge

  1956. ourselves and

  1957. taking the place

  1958. of God and

  1959. executing that

  1960. ourselves, we

  1961. can entrust

  1962. that to him

  1963. and it

  1964. softens our

  1965. hearts toward

  1966. our enemies.

  1967. Now, as I

  1968. mentioned earlier,

  1969. there are some

  1970. crimes or sins

  1971. that have been

  1972. committed that

  1973. really require

  1974. authorities and

  1975. others to be

  1976. involved.

  1977. And I think

  1978. the heart of a

  1979. Christian is that

  1980. even if you need

  1981. to do that,

  1982. and in our

  1983. church we will

  1984. definitely counsel

  1985. people to do so

  1986. in certain

  1987. situations,

  1988. we recognize

  1989. sometimes people's

  1990. actions require

  1991. real justice

  1992. this side of

  1993. eternity.

  1994. There may

  1995. need to be

  1996. police reports,

  1997. they may need

  1998. to go to

  1999. jail for a

  2000. long time,

  2001. and a

  2002. Christian will

  2003. do so if

  2004. doing so is

  2005. truly loving

  2006. for that

  2007. person, is

  2008. truly the

  2009. best thing for

  2010. that person

  2011. and society,

  2012. but will do

  2013. so with the

  2014. heart of such

  2015. tenderness and

  2016. compassion that

  2017. is not gloating

  2018. or glad or

  2019. pleased that

  2020. they'll be

  2021. destroyed, but

  2022. if they could,

  2023. would wish that

  2024. they could even

  2025. take their

  2026. place, if

  2027. taking their

  2028. place would

  2029. truly be in

  2030. the best interest

  2031. of that person.

  2032. Friends, when

  2033. this heart starts

  2034. to get into us,

  2035. we start to see

  2036. our hearts now

  2037. have been shaped

  2038. by our great

  2039. and glorious

  2040. God who has

  2041. loved us in

  2042. such a deep

  2043. and profound

  2044. way.

  2045. So this

  2046. morning, who

  2047. is it that you

  2048. could begin to

  2049. pray for,

  2050. maybe begin to

  2051. show mercy

  2052. toward as

  2053. you've received

  2054. it from

  2055. Jesus.

  2056. And then

  2057. finally, our

  2058. last couple

  2059. of moments,

  2060. Jesus wonderfully

  2061. does talk about

  2062. a horizontal

  2063. path as well.

  2064. One of the

  2065. commentators,

  2066. Frederick Bruner,

  2067. speaks of

  2068. verse 23 to

  2069. 26, saying

  2070. these are,

  2071. once we've

  2072. dealt with our

  2073. hearts, the

  2074. little steps of

  2075. obedience that

  2076. you and I

  2077. can take.

  2078. And let's

  2079. read verse

  2080. 23 and 26.

  2081. He says,

  2082. so then,

  2083. if you're

  2084. offering your

  2085. gift at the

  2086. altar and

  2087. there,

  2088. remember,

  2089. your brother

  2090. has something

  2091. against you,

  2092. leave your

  2093. gift before

  2094. the altar

  2095. and go.

  2096. first be

  2097. reconciled,

  2098. then come

  2099. and offer

  2100. your gift,

  2101. come to

  2102. terms quickly

  2103. with your

  2104. accuser while

  2105. you're going

  2106. with him to

  2107. court,

  2108. lest your

  2109. accuser hand

  2110. you over to

  2111. the judge,

  2112. the judge to

  2113. the God,

  2114. and you be

  2115. put in

  2116. prison.

  2117. And what

  2118. this, I

  2119. should have

  2120. mentioned this

  2121. a little bit

  2122. earlier, but

  2123. one of the

  2124. reasons we

  2125. know this is

  2126. so bad for

  2127. us spiritually

  2128. is because

  2129. anger, Jesus

  2130. literally says,

  2131. if this is

  2132. living inside

  2133. your heart,

  2134. it cannot be

  2135. done while

  2136. you're

  2137. worshipping God

  2138. at the same

  2139. time.

  2140. But Jesus

  2141. here does

  2142. give us

  2143. practical steps

  2144. to do.

  2145. And very

  2146. simply, the

  2147. two things

  2148. that he

  2149. urges us

  2150. to consider

  2151. as we

  2152. want to

  2153. walk this

  2154. out with

  2155. other people

  2156. is to

  2157. act

  2158. proactively

  2159. and to

  2160. act

  2161. quickly.

  2162. Now, I

  2163. am very

  2164. conscious, this

  2165. is another

  2166. disclaimer, again,

  2167. a tough topic

  2168. this morning,

  2169. but another

  2170. disclaimer.

  2171. There are

  2172. many places

  2173. and churches

  2174. where some

  2175. of these

  2176. commands that

  2177. Jesus gives

  2178. have been

  2179. used to

  2180. manipulate

  2181. people, to

  2182. act in a

  2183. way that

  2184. their hearts

  2185. aren't ready

  2186. to do, or

  2187. to maybe even

  2188. keep people

  2189. in abusive

  2190. or wrong

  2191. relationships.

  2192. And that's

  2193. not Jesus'

  2194. intention here

  2195. at all.

  2196. But I do

  2197. want us to

  2198. see the

  2199. wisdom that

  2200. Jesus gives

  2201. here, that

  2202. when there

  2203. are relational

  2204. issues, he's

  2205. urging us to

  2206. act both

  2207. proactively and

  2208. quickly.

  2209. So, proactively.

  2210. Verse 23 to

  2211. 24, if you're

  2212. offering your

  2213. gift, then you

  2214. remember your

  2215. brother, leave

  2216. your gift before

  2217. the altar and

  2218. go.

  2219. First be

  2220. reconciled.

  2221. Now, what's

  2222. amazing about

  2223. this is Jesus

  2224. is not even

  2225. talking here

  2226. about you in

  2227. this situation

  2228. necessarily having

  2229. anger toward

  2230. another person.

  2231. He says if

  2232. you're worshiping

  2233. God and you

  2234. realize there's

  2235. a conflict

  2236. between you and

  2237. someone else and

  2238. they have

  2239. something against

  2240. you, rather

  2241. seek to repair

  2242. this before you

  2243. worship God.

  2244. He is urging a

  2245. proactive initiative

  2246. toward dealing

  2247. with any kind of

  2248. relational breakdowns.

  2249. fascinatingly, later

  2250. on in Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  2251. chapter 18, Jesus

  2252. says if your

  2253. brother does sin

  2254. against you, go

  2255. to him privately

  2256. and show him

  2257. his fault.

  2258. In other words, if

  2259. someone sins

  2260. against you, or

  2261. if you just know

  2262. someone's upset

  2263. with you, whether

  2264. or not you think

  2265. you did anything

  2266. wrong, Jesus

  2267. is saying the

  2268. initiative is always

  2269. on the Christian

2270. to go and try to

  2271. make those things

  2272. right.

2273. And I think as we

  2274. think through these

  2275. things, as we

  2276. think through our

  2277. own hearts, we

  2278. can respond by

  2279. asking God to

  2280. fill us with a

  2281. sense of mercy to

  2282. enable us,

  2283. to proactively

  2284. reach out to

  2285. others.

  2286. And then the

  2287. second thing he

  2288. says is settle

  2289. quickly.

  2290. So he speaks

  2291. about being

  2292. proactive, and

  2293. then he speaks

  2294. about setting

  2295. things quickly.

  2296. In verse 25, he

  2297. says, come to

  2298. terms quickly with

  2299. your accuser while

  2300. you're going with

  2301. him to court, lest

  2302. your accuser hand

2303. you to the judge, the

2304. judge to the God, and

  2305. you be put in

  2306. prison.

  2307. And I want to

  2308. encourage us this

  2309. morning that there

  2310. is real wisdom in

  2311. us following Jesus'

  2312. advice here to

  2313. deal quickly with

  2314. offenses that we

  2315. have.

  2316. I've been married

  2317. for 22 years.

  2318. I know that

  2319. sometimes when you

  2320. are in an argument

  2321. or you're in a

  2322. difficult moment, it

2323. can really be wise to

  2324. just say, let's take

  2325. an hour and let's

  2326. just gather our

  2327. thoughts and think

2328. how we can engage in

2329. this in a wise way.

  2330. That's certainly a

  2331. moment to kind of

  2332. cool off, gather your

  2333. thoughts, pray through

  2334. things, very, very

  2335. healthy in

  2336. relationships.

  2337. But what can be

  2338. really unhelpful is

2339. when we just put a

  2340. long distance between

2341. people that we are in

  2342. conflict with.

  2343. Jesus is urging us

  2344. here to deal with

  2345. these things quickly.

  2346. And I think the

  2347. reason for this, as

  2348. we all know, when

  2349. you're estranged from

  2350. someone over a long

  2351. period of time, and

  2352. there's a deep sense of

  2353. anger in your heart,

  2354. what has to happen

  2355. over time is,

  2356. firstly, you don't end

  2357. up humanizing and

  2358. personalizing that

  2359. person anymore.

  2360. And you need to

  2361. justify that anger.

  2362. And so what happens

  2363. with the distance is

  2364. you act, maybe you're

2365. not like me, but I

2366. act like a very good

  2367. defense attorney.

2368. And I can think of

  2369. all the reasons of

  2370. all the things that

  2371. they've done wrong, and

  2372. then I start attributing

  2373. motives to them.

  2374. And instead of

  2375. humanizing them and

  2376. standing in their

2377. shoes, I just build my

2378. case in a stronger and

  2379. stronger way.

  2380. And what ends up

  2381. happening is that

  2382. rift and that

  2383. divide just gets

  2384. larger and larger and

  2385. larger.

  2386. And I've seen some

  2387. people who refuse to

  2388. deal with things

  2389. quickly, and then

  2390. suddenly it's years and

  2391. years, and you think

2392. this will never, ever be

  2393. resolved.

2394. Jesus is urging us as

  2395. his people, who see

  2396. every human being, all

  2397. human beings as image

  2398. bearers, to reach out

  2399. proactively, to try and

  2400. deal with things quickly,

  2401. to humanize them, to

  2402. listen, to see, and

  2403. ultimately to extend the

2404. kind of mercy that God's

  2405. given to us.

2406. And we can do so knowing

  2407. that ultimately everything

2408. wrong in this world is

2409. one day going to be made

  2410. right.

  2411. Jesus' death and

  2412. resurrection confirms

  2413. that.

2414. It shows us God is full of

  2415. mercy toward us who've

  2416. sinned against him, but

2417. God is so merciful that he

2418. will absorb in himself the

2419. consequences of our sin to

  2420. him.

2421. And he is now inviting

2422. all of us as his people,

2423. to be a people who are

  2424. not just learning some

  2425. practical steps about how

2426. can we try and serve

  2427. people better, but who

  2428. really see and wrestle

2429. with our God and his

  2430. character and the work

2431. he's done on the cross in

2432. a deep way in our hearts

2433. and then slowly learn to

  2434. live this out.

  2435. I've been a Christian for

  2436. many, many years.

2437. These things take me a

  2438. long time.

2439. They do not come naturally

2440. or easily, but this is

2441. what it means to be a

  2442. Christian, to receive God's

  2443. incredible grace and then

2444. ask him to work that out

  2445. in us slowly.

2446. I've been so encouraged by

2447. just meeting so many of

2448. you over the last couple

2449. of days and over the

  2450. years that we've known

  2451. many of you.

  2452. This, friends, is a

  2453. church where people, I

  2454. believe, love each other

  2455. deeply.

2456. And as you continue to

  2457. love each other deeply

2458. and richly, this is the

2459. kind of community God is

2460. so eager to add people to

  2461. where they'll be folded

2462. in and together as God's

2463. people we learn to live

  2464. together like him,

  2465. displaying his character

  2466. to our watching world.

2467. Can we close our eyes

2468. and let me pray for us

  2469. this morning?

2470. Father, we ask you this

  2471. morning that you would,

2472. by your spirit, you would

2473. peel away some of the

  2474. layers of our hearts,

  2475. maybe where we've

  2476. justified some of our

  2477. own responses or anger.

  2478. Father, even where those

2479. of us have been deeply

2480. wounded and hurt in a way

  2481. that grieves you

  2482. profoundly.

2483. Father, I ask that by your

  2484. spirit this morning, you,

2485. by your mercy, would peel

2486. away some of those layers

  2487. of hardness that have

2488. grown in our hearts and you

2489. would enable us to bring

  2490. our wounds, our sufferings,

2491. the injustice to you, to

2492. entrust it into your hands,

2493. to ask you to carry it,

2494. and then to ask you to

  2495. soften our own hearts,

2496. to make us more human,

2497. to make us more like you.

  2498. Won't you heal us?

2499. And as you heal us, Lord God,

  2500. won't you, I want you to

  2501. heal our relationships,

2502. and won't you heal our world?

2503. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  2504. Amen.
