  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah.

  2. ! It is wonderful that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah,

  3. either by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray for us

  4. that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian,

  6. we really, I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the

  7. Bible, they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will do

  8. what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a non-Christian,

  9. checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't hesitate to send us

  10. questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the types of things

  11. that you're really struggling with. So God bless. Let's pray. May the words of my mouth and the

  12. meditation of all our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Amen.

  13. So, you probably know this, but this summer at Messiah, we're looking at Psalms each week.

  14. And what I love about Psalms is they have a remarkable way of focusing us and, let us say,

  15. distilling biblical truths down to their essence as prayer offered to God. And so today's Psalm,

  16. Psalm 110, is a really important one, and it zeroes in on a really key question for us. And the question is

  17. this. What kind of leader do we need? What kind of leader do we need? Like me, you are probably

  18. bombarded with news of political division, leadership scandals. You probably heard a few this week.

  19. And it becomes clear after a while that even the most well-intentioned human leaders cannot bring

  20. lasting peace and cannot fix what is broken. And people turn to religion. And religious leaders are

  21. limited and confused and often disappoint us. And so the question remains. This Psalm puts it right in

  22. front of us. What kind of leader do we need? What kind of leader do we need? Psalm 110, you'll be happy to

  23. know, gives an answer. And it reveals a leader who rules with power and justice, and a leader who

  24. brings us into God's presence with mercy and grace, does both those things. So it's not just a king,

  25. not just a priest, but a priest-king, a person who embodies these roles together, political leader,

  26. religious leader, priest-king, together. Now, the Old Testament, it's not in this psalm, but the Old

  27. Testament refers to this leader, this priest-king, as the Messiah. And Messiah means anointed one.

  28. That's what the word means. It's a Hebrew word, means anointed one. Because if someone in the Old

  29. Testament became a king or became a priest, what they would do is pour oil on their head.

  30. They're anointed with oil. And that would sort of ordain them or induct them into that office.

  31. And so that's the Messiah. That's the Old Testament Hebrew. In the New Testament, which is written in

  32. Greek, they have a different word, a translation of Messiah. And that word is Christ. So when I was

  33. teaching the Bible in the Arctic, I would always tell my students, you know, Christ isn't Jesus' last name.

  34. So like if you had the first century equivalent of a phone book, you wanted to give him a call,

  35. you wouldn't look under C. Christ is a title. And some modern Bible translations don't even say

  36. Jesus Christ, they just say King Jesus, to put that really before us. And so Jesus Christ is to say

  37. that Jesus of Nazareth embodies this promised priest king. Perfectly embodies that.

  38. And so Jesus is the leader we need. And so let's look at Psalm 110 with that in mind, that Jesus embodies

  39. these two roles, the divine king, the eternal priest, and that he, because he embodies those two roles,

  40. is the leader we most need. So Psalm 110. We're going to begin with the first part of it. It's kind of

  41. divided into two. And it's the two pillars of this Psalm, let's say, are two declarations that God makes

  42. to the Messiah, the priest king. So here's the first thing God says to the Messiah, then we'll look at the

  43. second thing. So I'll read it again, just so it's firm in our minds. So Psalm 110, 1 to 3, which I just

  44. read, but we'll read it again. The Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies

  45. your footstool. The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies.

  46. Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power in holy garments. From the womb of

  47. the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. All right, so let's look at that declaration God

  48. makes. The Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand, and I'll make your enemies your footstool.

  49. The Lord says to my Lord. Sounds weird in English. It sounds less weird in Hebrew.

  50. I think I said this last week, but I'll say it again. When you see in the Bible, in the Old

  51. Testament especially, that the word Lord written in all caps, capital L, capital O, capital R,

  52. capital D, that's God's name. It's the name that God gave to Moses at the burning bush when Moses asked

  53. God. Basically, who are you? Who's sending me? And God answered something like Yahweh or Yahweh,

  54. which is essentially, I am who I am. And so whenever you see Lord in all caps, it's that name.

  55. When you see Lord, capital L, lowercase O-R-D, that's a more general title. It's the Hebrew Adonai. It's a

  56. title of respect and honor. So essentially, the Lord says to my Lord is the same thing as saying,

  57. Yahweh, the covenant God of Israel, says this to a powerful king. Okay, so picture God in his throne

  58. room talking to a powerful, divinely chosen king. And even David, greater than David, because even David

  59. calls this figure, this my Lord, okay? Greater than David. Now, what is the covenant God of Israel say

  60. to the powerful king? It says, sit at my right hand. This is an ultimate position of shared authority.

  61. Like even the visual of that, because if you look at, you imagine God sitting on a throne,

  62. you can, you probably picture only God, but this image is not only, only God, the father. It's also

  63. a powerful king beside him, sharing his authority right beside him. And so God is essentially saying

  64. to that figure beside him, my honor, my power, it all belongs to this person here too.

  65. Everything belongs to this person here too. And that's what happened to Jesus. So imagine,

  66. 40 days after this scene, this scene here, this is the resurrection, 40 days after that,

  67. Jesus ascends to the father and he comes into the throne room of God the father. God is,

  68. the father's on the throne and Jesus, even his resurrected body has nail wounds and thorn scars on his

  69. brow and a spear mark in his side. And he goes to God's throne room, the father's.

  70. And the father says, Jesus, my son, sit at my right hand, my honor and my authority belong to you.

  71. And my friends, Jesus has been reigning from that position ever since.

  72. He's been reigning as the divine king there ever since. So what does that mean? Well, it means,

  73. we talked a little bit about being disillusioned with political leaders and religious leaders. It means

  74. that when human powers fail, there's a king on the throne. And his reign, the reign of Jesus,

  75. the Messiah is a present reality. We're waiting for it to be fully brought into our world, but it's a

  76. present reality. Jesus reigns as king today. And this for me, and I hope for you, is a powerful source

  77. of hope. Because it means that whatever storms life throws at you, you have an anchor. You have a king

  78. who's reigning on high.

  79. Shifting political tides, human leaders failing. You shouldn't be surprised. Our focus is we have a king.

  80. We know the world's true king. Okay? Now that next bit. So the Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand

  81. until, here's the next bit, until I make your enemies your footstool.

  82. So the picture here is you have a throne with a king on it, and there's a footstool in front of it

  83. that the king puts his feet on. But with this imagery here, it's a picture of complete conquest

  84. where the enemies become furniture. That's pretty defeated when you become a piece of furniture,

  85. I think. So essentially God is saying that all who stand against my chosen king will be subdued.

  86. God is saying there are no forces anywhere that can block what I'm doing through this king.

  87. God is saying there are no forces anywhere that can block what I'm doing through this king.

  88. My plans cannot be thwarted.

  89. So we don't fight a losing battle. We serve a king whose victory is assured.

  90. And so in any troubles that you experience,

  91. of any kind,

  92. keep your eyes

  93. heavenward.

  94. Remind yourself there is a king in charge. It might not always look like it

  95. momentarily, but there is a king in charge.

  96. Okay?

  97. Now what about our role in all this?

  98. Look at verse 3, just that line,

  99. your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power.

  100. See, if we belong to Jesus, we're not furniture.

  101. We're not footstools.

  102. We're willing participants.

  103. We're like troops that are willingly engaged in this spiritual battle.

  104. Now, you can see,

  105. I've read through this now,

  106. you can see in this psalm that

  107. there's a lot of militaristic imagery.

  108. And no surprise then that

  109. Jesus' contemporaries expected a kind of military leader

  110. to overthrow the occupiers

  111. and set up an earthly kingdom.

  112. Turns out

  113. that the revolution

  114. Jesus brings goes deeper than that.

  115. doesn't just transform

  116. political arrangements.

  117. It actually transforms

  118. the human heart from the inside out.

  119. Through love,

  120. through truth,

  121. through mercy.

  122. And as willing people,

  123. as Christians,

  124. who are being transformed

  125. from the inside out,

  126. we are to embody

  127. these values of Jesus,

  128. these kingdom values.

  129. You know what the other thing is?

  130. this king is the greatest servant of all.

  131. There's no greater servant than the king,

  132. King Jesus.

  133. So he models this for us.

  134. So, that's the first part.

  135. A king,

  136. Jesus,

  137. the Messiah,

  138. the Christ,

  139. who's currently reigning

  140. at the right hand of God,

  141. the Father,

  142. whose victory is assured,

  143. and who we can trust in

  144. when things look all topsy-turvy

  145. in our lives

  146. and in society at large.

  147. He's our king.

  148. Not only that,

  149. and here's the second part,

  150. he's also our eternal priest.

  151. Divine king,

  152. eternal priest.

  153. So let's look at the second bit here.

  154. Jesus is the eternal priest.

  155. So, again,

  156. remember I said

  157. the pillars of this psalm

  158. are declarations from God.

  159. The first one is

  160. that

  161. word to the Messiah

  162. said at my right hand.

  163. That's the first one.

  164. Here's the second one.

  165. The Lord,

  166. verse 4,

  167. the Lord has sworn

  168. and will not change his mind.

  169. Now God speaks

  170. to the Messiah.

  171. You are a priest

  172. forever

  173. after the order

  174. of Melchizedek.

  175. Who on earth is that?

  176. I'll tell you in a minute.

  177. And then the rest.

  178. The Lord is at your right hand.

  179. He will shatter kings

  180. on the day of his wrath.

  181. He will execute judgment

  182. among the nations,

  183. filling them with corpses.

  184. He will shatter chiefs

  185. over the wide earth.

  186. He will drink

  187. from the brook by the way.

  188. Therefore,

  189. he will lift up his head.

  190. Before I say anything more,

  191. I should say this.

  192. The early Christians

  193. were so convinced

  194. that Psalm 110,

  195. this Psalm here,

  196. described Jesus so well

  197. and so comprehensively

  198. that they quoted

  199. this passage

  200. in the New Testament

  201. more than any other

  202. Old Testament passage.

  203. It's all over.

  204. Every major New Testament

  205. writer quotes it.

  206. It's all over the New Testament.

  207. And if you go looking for it,

  208. you'll find it everywhere.

  209. So,

  210. Divine King,

  211. now we've got

  212. the eternal priest.

  213. Let's have a look at that.

  214. Now,

  215. I want to just

  216. first tell you

  217. how weird this is,

  218. this Psalm.

  219. Strange.

  220. Why is it strange?

  221. It's strange

  222. because in Israel,

  223. a priest

  224. and a king

  225. were entirely

  226. different roles.

  227. and they were

  228. entirely different roles

  229. that you dare not mix.

  230. They're different roles

  231. because Israel

  232. comes from 12 tribes

  233. and kings

  234. always came

  235. from the tribe

  236. of Judah

  237. and priests

  238. always came

  239. from the tribe

  240. of Levi.

  241. So,

  242. you couldn't be both.

  243. You've got to be

  244. from one tribe

  245. and if you're

  246. from Levi,

  247. you may be a priest

  248. and if you're from Judah,

  249. you may be a king

  250. but you can't be both.

  251. And so,

  252. in that system,

  253. that law system

  254. in the Old Testament,

  255. there was no room

  256. for a priest king.

  257. And so,

  258. somebody reading this

  259. would think,

  260. wait a minute,

  261. this isn't right.

  262. A priest king?

  263. How does that work?

  264. Like,

  265. even if you read

  266. King Saul

  267. in 1 Samuel,

  268. he tried to,

  269. he was a king

  270. but he tried to do

  271. priestly duties

  272. and he was judged

  273. for it.

  274. They don't mix

  275. in that system.

  276. But,

  277. but,

  278. it's a different

  279. kind of priesthood,

  280. it's a different

  281. kind of system.

  282. And so,

  283. in this different

  284. kind of priesthood

  285. and different

  286. kind of system,

  287. they mix.

  288. In the Melchizedek

  289. system,

  290. they mix.

  291. So,

  292. let's talk a little bit

  293. about this Melchizedek

  294. person.

  295. He's mentioned

  296. really in two places

  297. in the Old Testament,

  298. Psalm 110,

  299. right here.

  300. And then,

  301. way back at the

  302. beginning,

  303. in Genesis chapter 14,

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  304. like,

  305. at the beginning

  306. of the Bible almost,

  307. Abraham

  308. wins this great battle

  309. and he's heading

  310. back home

  311. and he meets

  312. this man

  313. whose name

  314. is Melchizedek

  315. who comes

  316. out of nowhere.

  317. Comes out to meet him.

  318. We've never met him

  319. before.

  320. We have no idea

  321. who this is.

  322. He's described

  323. as the king

  324. of Salem,

  325. which is the old

  326. name for

  327. Jerusalem.

  328. So,

  329. he's the king

  330. of Jerusalem

  331. and he's described

  332. as a priest

  333. of God

  334. Most High.

  335. So,

  336. this guy,

  337. whoever he is,

  338. is a priest king.

  339. Both roles

  340. are sort of

  341. embodied in his

  342. person.

  343. He's a priest king.

  344. So,

  345. he comes out,

  346. meets this

  347. victorious Abraham.

  348. He's got bread

  349. and wine to offer

  350. him.

  351. He blesses

  352. Abraham

  353. and he receives

  354. a tithe.

  355. So,

  356. 10% of

  357. Abraham's

  358. food and

  359. animals and

  360. stuff.

  361. Okay?

  362. And then he

  363. disappears.

  364. And we don't

  365. see him again

  366. until Psalm 110.

  367. 10%.

  368. And if all

  369. you had was

  370. the Old Testament,

  371. you would just

  372. think it's kind

  373. of an odd guy

  374. who pops up

  375. and,

  376. I don't know.

  377. But see,

  378. Hebrews

  379. in the New

  380. Testament

  381. links it to

  382. Jesus.

  383. I'll tell you

  384. about that in a

  385. minute.

  386. So,

  387. I said Melchizedek's

  388. a priest.

  389. He's a priest

  390. and a king.

  391. I probably

  392. should say

  393. something

  394. momentarily

  395. here about

  396. the Old

  397. Testament

  398. Levitical

  399. system.

  400. What does

  401. that mean?

  402. I said that

  403. in the Old

  404. Testament,

  405. priests always

  406. came from the

  407. tribe of Levi.

  408. They are

  409. Levitical.

  410. They come from

  411. the tribe of

  412. Levi.

  413. And their job

  414. is to offer

  415. sacrifices in

  416. the temple.

  417. To bridge

  418. this gap

  419. between human

  420. beings and

  421. God.

  422. That's what a

  423. priest does.

  424. A mediator.

  425. So,

  426. that's what

  427. they would

  428. do.

  429. There's a real

  430. problem,

  431. though,

  432. is that these

  433. priests are all

  434. too human.

  435. They sin.

  436. They corrupt,

  437. some of them.

  438. And they die.

  439. They die.

  440. So,

  441. there's no

  442. permanent

  443. arrangement here

  444. because you

  445. have frail,

  446. sinful,

  447. mortal people

  448. who are

  449. priests.

  450. So,

  451. that system

  452. cannot provide

  453. a permanent,

  454. flawless pathway

  455. to God.

  456. But see,

  457. Jesus can.

  458. Jesus can.

  459. Jesus is a

  460. priest king

  461. in the order

  462. of Melchizedek.

  463. He's in a

  464. different system,

  465. and he's in a

  466. system that

  467. predates that

  468. Levitical one.

  469. And because he's

  470. an eternal

  471. priest,

  472. not subject to

  473. the same

  474. limitations as

  475. that other

  476. priesthood system,

  477. his sacrifice

  478. is eternally

  479. effective.

  480. And that's

  481. where it gets

  482. really weird.

  483. Because Jesus,

  484. the priest king

  485. from Melchizedek,

  486. he doesn't

  487. sacrifice animals.

  488. He sacrifices

  489. himself.

  490. himself.

  491. So,

  492. imagine a

  493. priest,

  494. arrayed in

  495. all the

  496. vestments and

  497. all that,

  498. going into the

  499. holy place of

  500. the temple,

  501. and not putting

  502. an animal on

  503. the altar,

  504. but climbing on

  505. there himself,

  506. dying to

  507. make a way

  508. to God.

  509. That's a

  510. weird image,

  511. but that is

  512. the claim of

  513. this passage,

  514. and that is

  515. the claim of

  516. our faith,

  517. that Christ is

  518. not only the

  519. great high priest,

  520. but he's the

  521. perfect sacrifice.

  522. So,

  523. as a perfect

  524. priest,

  525. offering a

  526. perfect sacrifice,

  527. he's a

  528. perfect bridge.

  529. Do you see?

  530. As a perfect

  531. priest,

  532. offering a

  533. perfect sacrifice,

  534. he's a

  535. perfect bridge

  536. between us

  537. and God.

  538. I mentioned

  539. a spiritual

  540. hunger,

  541. that we

  542. all,

  543. we've all

  544. been disappointed

  545. by,

  546. I mean,

  547. probably in

  548. some way,

  549. organized religion

  550. or religious

  551. leaders or

  552. whatever,

  553. but we have

  554. a longing

  555. in our

  556. heart to

  557. know God.

  558. We all

  559. do.

  560. And the

  561. message here

  562. is Jesus

  563. has done

  564. that.

  565. Open the

  566. gates wide.

  567. There's a

  568. wonderful passage

  569. in the New

  570. Testament book

  571. of Hebrews

  572. where it

  573. says,

  574. come boldly,

  575. come boldly

  576. to the throne

  577. of grace.

  578. Jesus throws

  579. those doors

  580. wide open

  581. and says,

  582. come with me,

  583. I'll bring

  584. you to

  585. God.

  586. And that

  587. changes

  588. everything.

  589. A perfect

  590. priest,

  591. a perfect

  592. sacrifice

  593. becomes a

  594. perfect bridge

  595. to bring

  596. you and

  597. me to

  598. God.

  599. It's a

  600. wonderful

  601. thing.

  602. So,

  603. we started

  604. today with

  605. that question

  606. the psalm

  607. puts to us,

  608. Psalm 110.

  609. The question

  610. is,

  611. what kind

  612. of leader

  613. can actually

  614. help us?

  615. What do

  616. we need

  617. in a leader?

  618. And Psalm 110

  619. gives the

  620. answer,

  621. which is,

  622. we need a

  623. divine king,

  624. eternal priest,

  625. we need someone

  626. who can deliver

  627. lasting peace,

  628. who can fix

  629. what is broken,

  630. who can make

  631. us whole,

  632. who can bring

  633. us to God

  634. and make our

  635. relationship

  636. with God

  637. right.

  638. And Jesus,

  639. my friends,

  640. has done that.

  641. He's our

  642. divine king,

  643. he's our

  644. eternal priest,

  645. and Hebrews

  646. says that,

  647. what is he

  648. doing now?

  649. He's continually

  650. interceding for

  651. us,

  652. like he's

  653. praying for

  654. us to the

  655. Father.

  656. So just

  657. think about

  658. that,

  659. you go about

  660. your day,

  661. maybe it's a

  662. good day,

  663. maybe it's a

  664. bad day,

  665. you've got

  666. worries,

  667. you've got

  668. anxieties,

  669. Jesus,

  670. ascended to

  671. the right

  672. hand of

  673. the Father,

  674. is praying

  675. for you and

  676. for me,

  677. is bringing

  678. any concerns

  679. that you have

  680. on your

  681. hearts and

  682. minds to

  683. the throne

  684. of grace.

  685. We're in

  686. good hands,

  687. we're in

  688. really good

  689. hands,

  690. a perfect

  691. priest and

  692. a perfect

  693. sacrifice makes

  694. a perfect

  695. bridge,

  696. and we

  697. have a

  698. king who

  699. rules in

  700. righteousness,

  701. it's a

  702. wonderful thing.

  703. I'll end

  704. with this,

  705. if you don't

  706. know Jesus,

  707. the priest

  708. king yet,

  709. I hope you

  710. do,

  711. I hope you

  712. come to

  713. know him,

  714. ask questions,

  715. and test it,

  716. and see if

  717. this Jesus

  718. fulfills your

  719. spiritual hunger.

  720. I think

  721. he will.

  722. And not

  723. just fulfill

  724. your spiritual

  725. hunger in a

  726. way that he

  727. adds a little

  728. bit to your

  729. life, you'll

  730. discover as

  731. you walk that

  732. path with

  733. Jesus, the

  734. priest king,

  735. you'll discover

  736. that he's not

  737. just like an

  738. augmentation to

  739. your life,

  740. he's everything.

  741. He's all you

  742. need.

  743. He's all you

  744. need.

  745. So we

  746. can live with

  747. confidence.

  748. Our faith is

  749. not like

  750. shifting sands.

  751. We have a

  752. king that

  753. reigns and a

  754. priest that

  755. intercedes.

  756. We can live

  757. with confidence.

  758. We can live

  759. in willing

  760. obedience.

  761. So we don't

  762. just have to

  763. sit here and

  764. wait, we

  765. can participate

  766. in Christ's

  767. victory.

  768. We can

  769. participate.

  770. The victory

  771. of God is

  772. unfolding in

  773. real time

  774. right before

  775. us.

  776. Again, it

  777. doesn't

  778. always look

  779. like it, but

  780. it's happening.

  781. So we can

  782. live with

  783. confidence, we

  784. can live with

  785. willing obedience,

  786. we can live in

  787. worship.

  788. We can praise

  789. and thank this

  790. one who has

  791. done for us

  792. what we cannot

  793. do for

  794. ourselves.

  795. He's done

  796. it.

  797. So come

  798. to God.

  799. How?

  800. Through the

  801. merits of our

  802. great priest

  803. king.

  804. He will

  805. not fail

  806. you.

  807. He will

  808. get you

  809. where you

  810. want to

  811. go.

  812. Because he's

  813. Jesus the

  814. Christ, the

  815. chosen one.

  816. That's good

  817. news.

  818. Amen.

  819. Amen.

  820. Amen.
