  1. Now, I'm going to read together from Luke's gospel, Luke chapter 11, and we're reading verses

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  2. ! Luke chapter 11, I think in the church Bibles, if you're following there, it's page 870.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  3. Luke chapter 11, reading from verse 29. Let's hear and read together in God's Word.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  4. Luke chapter 11, when the crowds were increasing, he began to say,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  5. this generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except

  6. the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be

  7. to this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this

  8. generation and condemn them. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

  9. And behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with

  10. this generation and condemn it. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah. And behold, something

  11. greater than Jonah is here. No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket,

  12. but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your

  13. eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light. But when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.

  14. Therefore, be careful, lest the light in you be darkness. If then your whole body is full of light,

  15. having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.

  16. It says, the Word of God, and to His name be the praise and the glory.

  17. There's a particular kind of conversation that most of us have probably had at some point in our lives,

  18. maybe with a skeptical friend, or maybe with a member of our family who used to go to church,

  19. and who's kind of fallen away. Or maybe it's a conversation that you've had by yourself,

  20. on a dark night, inside your head, a conversation that you've relayed maybe several times. And it

  21. goes something like this, God, if you would only give me a sign, something big and undeniable,

  22. and then I'd believe, then I'd follow you, then I could be your disciple. But you're not, God. You're

  23. not being obvious enough. Well, in some ways, maybe that sounds a little bit like a reasonable request.

  24. It kind of sounds humble. I'm not asking for much, just for evidence so that I can believe God.

  25. Show me something real, and I'm all in. Well, Jesus has a lot to say in response to a question

  26. like that, and it's maybe not what we might first expect. So in our passage that David read for us in

  27. Luke 11, the people are pressing in around Jesus, and they're looking for that very thing,

  28. shows a sign, they're saying. And Jesus doesn't say, okay, fair enough, here goes, here's something big.

  29. He says something much more searching, something much more uncomfortable,

  30. something that turns the question around on these people, and asks them,

  31. is a lack of a sign actually the issue here? Well, tonight, if you or somebody that you know

  32. is considering the claims of the Bible, if you're thinking, God, if only you would give me a clear sign,

  33. clear, big, undeniable, that's all it would take for me to believe. Well, then this passage is for you.

  34. And we're going to look through this passage together. We're going to do it in three parts.

  35. The sign seekers, the unlikely responders, and the light bearer. Okay, so first, the sign seekers.

  36. So what's really going on when we demand a clearer sign, when we demand more evidence? Well, the crowds

  37. have been coming to see Jesus as we've been going through Luke, and they're getting bigger and bigger.

  38. They're getting more and more pressed in on him. And the people want to hear what Jesus has to say.

  39. But Jesus tells them not what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. Because the first thing

  40. he says in verses 28 and 30 is, this generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign

  41. will be given to it except for the sign of Jonah. So that pretty blunt opening gambit, this is an evil

  42. generation. And this is a generation that hasn't simply made a mistake or missed the truth. The word

  43. that he uses for evil in the original language is an intentional, deliberate wickedness, knowing

  44. and doing it anyway. It's a word for when something's actively corrupt. So these people are not just weak

  45. or misguided. And the evidence that Jesus gives for his claim that these people are actively, intentionally

  46. choosing evil. That's not what we might expect either, because he doesn't point to their moral

  47. failures, the things that they do or the things that they fail to do. He points to their sign seeking

  48. itself. So why is looking for a sign evil? Well, these people have seen plenty of signs. By now, Jesus has

  49. healed a man with a withered hand. He's raised a widow's son from the dead. He's healed 10 lepers. He's

  50. given sight to the blind. And then just before this exchange, he's cast out a demon and has left the man

  51. unable to speak. And the crowds have responded with absolute wonder. The religious leaders even accused him

  52. of being of Beelzebub, of being of the devil, in order to cast out demons. In fact, if we just jump back a

  53. little bit, in verses 14 and 15 of this chapter, Jesus casts out a demon. And then in the very next verse, some

  54. people, to test him, were seeking from him a sign from heaven. So these people are always looking

  55. for something more. This is really important, because these people aren't asking for a sign

  56. because they haven't had one. They're asking for a sign because they haven't seen yet the particular

  57. sign that they themselves want. You see, they want the conditions. They want to decide

  58. what is a good sign and what isn't. What is a sign that Jesus is bringing in the kingdom of God?

  59. Well, the sign that they want is one that would take faith out of their hands, that would force them

  60. to believe on their own terms. They want the kind of evidence that they can control because they want

  61. something spectacular and undeniable so that belief becomes unavoidable. They want a sign that's

  62. so irrepressible that it takes away the need for repentance and for faith. They want to be

  63. compelled to come to Jesus. But Jesus says, the only sign you're going to get is the sign of Jonah.

  64. So as we may well know, Jonah is a prophet in the Old Testament. He's called by God to go and preach

  65. to people who are in trouble. Those people are evil and Jonah doesn't want to go. And so he takes off

  66. as far as he can in the opposite direction until he finds himself inside a giant fish.

  67. We're in Luke, but in Matthew's account, Matthew makes it really clear that the meaning of the sign of

  68. Jonah is, as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, so will the son of man

  69. be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Well, Jesus is calling himself the son of man.

  70. That's himself he's referring to. And so the sign of Jonah, Jesus is saying, is the resurrection.

  71. Jesus is going to die and he's going to be in the grave, dead for three days, and he's going to rise

  72. again, similar to what happened to Jonah inside the fish. The one great, unrepeatable history-splitting

  73. event that took place vindicates everything that Jesus said about himself, and it's coming.

  74. But notice what kind of sign it is, because it's not a fireworks display and it's not a spectacle.

  75. It's a dead man walking out of a tomb, visible only to those who had eyes to see, and dismissed

  76. by those who were determined not to. The resurrection is not the kind of evidence that compels belief,

  77. regardless of what your heart is like. It's exactly the kind of sign that requires a response of faith.

  78. These people know the scripture. They know their traditions. They know the story of Jonah.

  79. They know that Jesus is saying Jonah is a sign, a shadow of another resurrection that's going to come.

  80. And this is where it lands, I think, with a jolt for us, because we live on the other side

  81. of that other resurrection. The sign of Jonah has been given, and the tomb is also empty.

  82. The evidence has been laid out. We've got the testimony of the eyewitnesses who saw Jesus after

  83. he was risen. We've got the transformation of the disciples. We've got the explosion of the early church

  84. from being a handful of people locked up in a room to a movement that turned the entire Roman Empire

  85. upside down. And the question that Jesus is really pressing in verse 29 is not,

  86. why haven't I given you more evidence? But what is it in you that keeps refusing the evidence that's

  87. already been given? That's the question that Jesus is asking them. And if we're here tonight and

  88. our faith is not in Jesus, well, we've been asked exactly the same question.

  89. What is it that's keeping you from believing? Because the signs are all there.

  90. So Jesus goes on to develop this idea a little bit further in the next two paragraphs, which takes us

  91. to our second point tonight, the unlikely responders. Jesus calls on two witnesses to show us what a genuine

  92. response looks like. So this is in verses 31-32. He says,

  93. the queen of the south will rise up at the judgment and the men of this generation

  94. with the men of this generation and condemn them. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment

  95. and this generation and condemn it.

  96. So these are two deliberately dramatic

  97. verses from Jesus.

  98. Deliberately dramatic in the ears of these first century

  99. hearers because he reaches into

  100. history and he pulls out

  101. two highly unlikely

  102. witnesses.

  103. And he holds them up to the people

  104. and he says,

  105. he's called these people an

  106. evil generation and he

  107. says, they got it.

  108. These people far from

  109. us, far from God, they got it.

  110. But you don't.

  111. So the first witness, the queen of the south.

  112. So we can read about that in the Old Testament

  113. in 1 Kings chapter 10.

    1 Kings 10 chapter mention

  114. She hears about this man in Jerusalem

  115. who's incredibly wise

  116. and she travels over a thousand miles

  117. to hear Solomon's

  118. wisdom.

  119. And Jesus says she came from the ends of the earth.

  120. She actually came from

  121. southern Arabia. I think that's

  122. roughly where Yemen is today.

  123. But that phrase, the ends of the

  124. earth, is a reference to

  125. Gentile foreigners, people

  126. outside of the

  127. religious tradition, people who are

  128. firmly outside of Israel.

  129. She's no Jewish heritage.

  130. She's no covenant background.

  131. She's no long-standing

  132. theological tradition

  133. to rely on.

  134. She heard a rumor.

  135. She heard about this man

  136. and she came to find out more.

  137. And when she arrived and she

  138. heard Solomon speak, she responded

  139. with wonder and worship

  140. and outpouring of generosity.

  141. She came, she heard,

  142. she believed.

  143. And then the punchline

  144. Jesus delivers

  145. is devastating.

  146. He says,

  147. something greater than Solomon

  148. is here.

  149. The one standing in front of the crowd

  150. isn't just a wise teacher.

  151. He's the eternal

  152. son of God.

  153. Wisdom incarnate.

  154. 1 Corinthians

  155. 1.24

  156. says that Jesus

  157. is the power of God

  158. and the wisdom

  159. of God.

  160. Solomon was given

  161. wisdom,

  162. but Jesus

  163. is wisdom.

  164. And while this

  165. queen was humble enough

  166. to travel all this way,

  167. to hear Solomon,

  168. to hear Solomon speak,

  169. to hear his wisdom,

  170. this evil generation

  171. that Jesus is addressing,

  172. they can't make

  173. the short journey

  174. from unbelief

  175. to faith.

  176. The second witness

  177. or group

  178. of witnesses

  179. are probably even

  180. more striking

  181. than the queen

  182. of Sheba.

  183. Nineveh

  184. was the capital

  185. of the Assyrian

  186. empire.

  187. Nineveh

  188. is where

  189. God sends Jonah,

  190. which is mentioned.

  191. It's also mentioned,

  192. Nineveh

  193. is also mentioned

  194. in the book

  195. of Nahum,

  196. who's another prophet.

  197. And the city's

  198. called the bloody city.

  199. They were cruel

  200. and bloodthirsty

  201. and they were an enemy

  202. to Israel.

  203. When God told Jonah

  204. to go and preach

  205. to them,

  206. Jonah ran

  207. in the opposite direction

  208. precisely because

  209. he knew

  210. they were Israel's enemies.

  211. He wasn't just afraid

  212. of what they might do,

  213. but he didn't want

  214. them to be saved.

  215. Jonah didn't want

  216. to go,

  217. didn't want to preach,

  218. but he did

  219. via a great fish

  220. and he delivered

  221. what's probably

  222. the most reluctant

  223. sermon in the whole

  224. of the Bible.

  225. Five words

  226. in the original Hebrew,

  227. 40 days

  228. and Nineveh

  229. will be overthrown.

  230. But what happened?

  231. The whole city

  232. repented

  233. from the king

  234. on the throne

  235. to the cattle

  236. in the field.

  237. They fasted,

  238. they mourned,

  239. they put on

  240. mourning clothes,

  241. they responded

  242. to a half-hearted

  243. message

  244. from a reluctant

  245. preacher

  246. with complete,

  247. immediate,

  248. and total

  249. repentance.

  250. And Jesus says,

  251. something greater

  252. than Jonah

  253. is here.

  254. Jesus is not

  255. a reluctant prophet.

  256. He's not been

  257. dragged into this

  258. mission.

  259. The son of God

  260. who dwelt

  261. in glorious

  262. perfection

  263. came willingly

  264. into the world

  265. to preach

  266. with perfect

  267. authority

  268. and compassion

  269. to perform

  270. many miraculous

  271. signs

  272. in front of

  273. their eyes.

  274. And the generation

  275. that's seen this,

  276. all of this,

  277. stands unmoved

  278. while the evil

  279. Ninevites

  280. repented

  281. at the message

  282. that barely got out

  283. of the preacher's

  284. reluctant mouth.

  285. I mean,

  286. can you feel

  287. the weight

  288. of what Jesus

  289. is saying

  290. to these people?

  291. He's not

  292. mocking them.

  293. He's being urgent.

  294. The comparison

  295. with the Queen

  296. of Sheba

  297. and the Ninevites

  298. is not primarily

  299. condemnation.

  300. It's a wake-up call.

  301. He's saying,

  302. look how little

  303. it took for them

  304. to respond.

  305. Look how much

  306. it's taken

  307. for you.

  308. Look how much

  309. you have got

  310. and how little

  311. you've moved.

  312. So,

  313. how is that?

  314. What's going on?

  315. How can these

  316. ignorant outsiders

  317. go from

  318. a place of

  319. unbelief

  320. to faith

  321. and the people

  322. right in front

  323. of Jesus

  324. aren't?

  325. Well,

  326. God says in Jonah

  327. that the Ninevites

  328. didn't know

  329. their left hand

  330. from their right hand.

  331. They were ignorant

  332. but they accepted

  333. the message.

  334. The people

  335. he's speaking to

  336. have had generations

  337. of benefits,

  338. teaching,

  339. tradition

  340. and they failed

  341. to hear

  342. an even clearer

  343. message.

  344. in the 18th

  345. century,

  346. the philosopher

  347. David Hume,

  348. Edinburgh boy,

  349. he wrote a paper

  350. called On Miracles

  351. and in that

  352. he mounted

  353. what he considered

  354. to be a decisive

  355. argument against

  356. the possibility

  357. of miracles

  358. taking place.

  359. Essentially,

  360. he argued

  361. that it's never

  362. rational to believe

  363. in miracles

  364. because the evidence

  365. for violation

  366. of natural law

  367. can never

  368. outweigh the

  369. uniform experience

  370. against it.

  371. So Hume

  372. always maintained

  373. that it's more

  374. probable that

  375. witnesses are

  376. mistaken or lying

  377. than it is

  378. for a miracle

  379. to take place.

  380. But here's the thing,

  381. his objection

  382. isn't about

  383. evidence,

  384. it's about

  385. his prior

  386. commitment.

  387. He's already

  388. decided before

  389. looking at any

  390. miraculous claim

  391. that no evidence

  392. can be good

  393. enough.

  394. The conclusion

  395. that he comes

  396. to is already

  397. built into

  398. his premise.

  399. He wasn't

  400. engaged in

  401. open-minded

  402. inquiry.

  403. He wasn't

  404. letting the

  405. evidence fall

  406. where it might

  407. lie.

  408. He was

  409. protecting a

  410. predetermined

  411. verdict that he

  412. decided in his

  413. head.

  414. And Jesus is

  415. saying,

  416. this is what's

  417. happening with

  418. this generation.

  419. Jesus is saying

  420. that the signs

  421. he can,

  422. it's not

  423. genuine

  424. openness,

  425. it's a request

  426. for the kind

  427. of overwhelming

  428. resistance

  429. bypassing

  430. proof

  431. that would

  432. make faith

  433. unnecessary

  434. and repentance

  435. unnecessary as

  436. well.

  437. So why

  438. can Jesus

  439. make this

  440. claim?

  441. Why are

  442. these people

  443. looking for

  444. a sign

  445. when so

  446. many signs

  447. have been

  448. given?

  449. Jesus is

  450. connecting

  451. sign-seeking

  452. to an inner

  453. condition.

  454. And he's

  455. going to go

  456. on to say

  457. that in

  458. point three.

  459. Jesus says

  460. in point three,

  461. sorry,

  462. I've lost

  463. my place.

  464. That the

  465. reason that

  466. this generation

  467. can't see the

  468. signs that are

  469. right in front

  470. of them is

  471. not due to

  472. a lack of

  473. light.

  474. It's not

  475. because there's

  476. not sufficient

  477. evidence,

  478. but it's

  479. because their

  480. capacity to

  481. receive that

  482. evidence is

  483. broken.

  484. Well,

  485. Jesus says,

  486. your eye is

  487. the lamp of

  488. the body.

  489. So in the

  490. ancient world,

  491. the eye was

  492. understood not

  493. just to be the

  494. receiver of

  495. light, but a

  496. transmitter of

  497. light.

  498. So through

  499. your eye you

  500. see, but

  501. through your

  502. eye you also

  503. receive light,

  504. which then

  505. lights your

  506. whole body.

  507. And in the

  508. original language,

  509. the words that

  510. are used to

  511. describe the

  512. eye in our

  513. passage, we've

  514. got bad in

  515. English.

  516. but actually

  517. it's the same

  518. word that he

  519. uses to

  520. describe the

  521. evil generation.

  522. He's talking

  523. about an

  524. evil eye.

  525. This evil

  526. generation has

  527. an evil eye.

  528. It seeks a

  529. sign because

  530. its eye is

  531. evil, clouded,

  532. distorted, aimed

  533. at something

  534. wrong, serving

  535. divided masters,

  536. not seeing

  537. clearly.

  538. Jesus uses an

  539. interesting word

  540. for a healthy

  541. eye too.

  542. Because the

  543. word that he

  544. uses for the

  545. healthy eye is

  546. single or

  547. undivided.

  548. So Jesus is

  549. connecting, sign

  550. seeking, looking

  551. for more and

  552. more evidence,

  553. when plenty

  554. evidence exists,

  555. to an inner

  556. condition.

  557. It's not really

  558. about the eye,

  559. but it's about

  560. the heart.

  561. The light's on.

  562. It's their

  563. capacity to

  564. receive it that's

  565. broken.

  566. God's

  567. trying to

  568. evaluate Jesus.

  569. They're looking

  570. at Jesus and

  571. trying to make a

  572. decision about

  573. whether he's

  574. telling the

  575. truth, whether

  576. he is in

  577. fact the

  578. light of the

  579. world as he

  580. tells us that

  581. he is in

  582. John.

  583. But they're

  584. doing it with

  585. eyes that

  586. can't see

  587. clearly.

  588. Their

  589. priorities are

  590. already distorted.

  591. Their will is

  592. already set

  593. against repentance.

  594. And here, I

  595. think, at the

  596. end of this

  597. part, it

  598. becomes the

  599. most searching

  600. line in the

  601. entire passage.

  602. Jesus says,

  603. therefore be

  604. careful lest the

  605. light in you

  606. be darkness.

  607. So Jesus

  608. says it's

  609. possible not

  610. just to be

  611. in darkness,

  612. but to

  613. mistake your

  614. darkness for

  615. light.

  616. So to have a

  617. religious framework,

  618. a set of

  619. confident

  620. convictions, a

  621. well-developed

  622. theology, and

  623. to be so

  624. thoroughly in the

  625. dark that you

  626. think you're

  627. fine.

  628. The Pharisees

  629. thought that they

  630. were the

  631. custodians of

  632. light.

  633. They thought

  634. they knew what

  635. light was and

  636. wasn't.

  637. They were, by

  638. every external

  639. measure, the

  640. most serious

  641. religious people

  642. in Israel.

  643. And Jesus

  644. says to them,

  645. check whether

  646. what you think

  647. is light.

  648. is actually

  649. darkness.

  650. Because if your

  651. fundamental

  652. orientation towards

  653. God is wrong,

  654. if your heart's

  655. closed, if your

  656. will's set against

  657. him, if your

  658. religious practice

  659. is about being

  660. seen by other

  661. people, or to

  662. make yourself feel

  663. satisfied in your

  664. own performance,

  665. then your most

  666. confident religious

  667. light might be

  668. darkness through

  669. and through.

  670. sin.

  671. Since Adam and

  672. Eve, in the

  673. garden, since

  674. they fell, our

  675. capacity to

  676. receive and to

  677. respond to

  678. truth, it's not

  679. just intellectually

  680. limited.

  681. It's morally

  682. compromised as

  683. well.

  684. So sin in us

  685. means that we

  686. are not

  687. detached,

  688. neutral,

  689. neutral observers

  690. of the evidence

  691. about Jesus.

  692. we're not

  693. looking at it

  694. all from

  695. behind the

  696. glass screen.

  697. We're

  698. fallen, and

  699. our desires are

  700. distorted, our

  701. egos are

  702. defensive.

  703. We've got deep

  704. instinctive

  705. resistance to

  706. surrendering control

  707. to anyone,

  708. including to

  709. God.

  710. Our eye is bad,

  711. and a bad eye

  712. doesn't know

  713. that it's bad.

  714. Darkness doesn't

  715. announce itself as

  716. darkness.

  717. It announces

  718. itself as

  719. perfectly reasonable

  720. skepticism,

  721. as intellectual

  722. rigor, as

  723. legitimate, fair

  724. questions, but

  725. often right down

  726. at root level.

  727. It's our will

  728. that's turned

  729. away from God,

  730. and we're

  731. looking for

  732. reasons to

  733. stay that way.

  734. Jesus says,

  735. be careful,

  736. lest the light

  737. in you be

  738. darkness.

  739. It's one of the

  740. most important

  741. warnings in the

  742. whole of the

  743. Gospels.

  744. It's a warning

  745. addressed not

  746. just to the

  747. Pharisees, not

  748. just to the

  749. 21st century

  750. crowds that are

  751. gathered around

  752. Jesus, but to

  753. everyone who

  754. handles light,

  755. religious light,

  756. with confidence.

  757. It's a warning

  758. to preachers and

  759. to elders,

  760. it's a warning

  761. to people who

  762. have sat in

  763. free church

  764. pews their

  765. entire lives,

  766. who could

  767. recite the

  768. catechism from

  769. memory.

  770. It's possible to

  771. know a great

  772. deal about

  773. light and yet

  774. never be in

  775. it.

  776. So how can

  777. we know?

  778. How do you

  779. check whether

  780. your eye is

  781. good or your

  782. eye is bad?

  783. Well, the

  784. primary test that

  785. Jesus gives us

  786. here in this

  787. passage is

  788. repentance.

  789. repentance.

  790. So the

  791. queen of

  792. Sheba came

  793. and she was

  794. changed.

  795. The Ninevites

  796. heard and they

  797. were changed.

  798. A healthy eye,

  799. one that's aimed

  800. at Christ, it

  801. leads to genuine

  802. transformation.

  803. Have you been

  804. sitting under the

  805. word for years

  806. and your

  807. fundamental posture

  808. towards God

  809. remains unchanged?

  810. If you're not

  811. more humble,

  812. more repentant,

  813. more dependent

  814. on God, more

  815. loving towards

  816. other people,

  817. more desperate

  818. for God's

  819. grace, we

  820. need to stop

  821. and ask

  822. ourselves whether

  823. the light that

  824. we're pursuing,

  825. the light that

  826. we're standing

  827. in is actually

  828. darkness.

  829. But here's the

  830. good news,

  831. and it is

  832. great news.

  833. Jesus doesn't

  834. just give us a

  835. warning and

  836. leave it at

  837. that.

  838. He also gives

  839. us a promise.

  840. He says in

  841. verse 36,

  842. if your whole

  843. body is full of

  844. light, having no

  845. part dark, it

  846. will be wholly

  847. bright as when a

  848. lamp with its

  849. rays gives you

  850. light.

  851. So Jesus talks a

  852. lot about lamps

  853. and light in the

  854. Gospels.

  855. In Matthew 5,

  856. he says that

  857. we're to let our

  858. light shine before

  859. others so that

  860. they can see by

  861. our good works,

  862. our Savior, our

  863. Father who's in

  864. heaven.

  865. Bright people

  866. point others to

  867. Jesus.

  868. But here in

  869. Luke, we get a

  870. slightly different

  871. development, a

  872. picture of

  873. ultimate

  874. illumination, a

  875. whole person, no

  876. dark corners, but

  877. somebody flooded

  878. with light.

  879. You see, the

  880. passage isn't just

  881. a warning about

  882. what we lack,

  883. it's a promise

  884. about what's

  885. available.

  886. Jesus is the

  887. light of the

  888. world, greater

  889. than Solomon,

  890. greater than

  891. Jonah.

  892. He gave us the

  893. side of the

  894. resurrection.

  895. When he went to

  896. the cross willingly,

  897. died for our sins

  898. in our place, took

  899. the punishment that

  900. we deserved, and

  901. he's the one that

  902. opens blind eyes so

  903. that we can see it.

  904. We call Jesus the

  905. great physician.

  906. Do you know how

  907. great a physician he

  908. is?

  909. He can perform eye

  910. surgery and heart

  911. surgery at the

  912. same time.

  913. If you ask him, he'll

  914. take your bad eye and

  915. make it good.

  916. He'll take your heart

  917. that's turned away and

  918. turn it back to him.

  919. And in the end, he

  920. will flood every

  921. corner of you with

  922. light.

  923. Let's pray.

  924. Father, we confess

  925. that we are not

  926. always honest

  927. inquirers that we

  928. imagine ourselves to

  929. be.

  930. We confess that our

  931. resistance to you is

  932. often deeper than our

  933. questions.

  934. Forgive us for the

  935. times we've asked for

  936. more light when what

  937. we needed was open

  938. eyes to see the

  939. light that's already

  940. been given.

  941. Lord Jesus, you're

  942. greater than Solomon,

  943. greater than Jonah.

  944. You're the light of

  945. the world.

  946. God, illuminate the

  947. corners, the dark

  948. corners of our

  949. hearts.

  950. Defend us from the

  951. evil one.

  952. Help us to stand in

  953. your light.

  954. Give us eyes that see

  955. hearts willing to

  956. repent for your glory

  957. and for our good.

  958. In Jesus' name.

  959. Amen.
