  1. I'm going to invite one of our members, Douglas, up. He's going to read God's word to us.

  2. ! Douglas is going to read Psalm 127.

  3. A Song of Ascents of Solomon.

  4. Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.

  5. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

  6. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil.

  7. For he gives to his beloved sleep.

  8. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord.

  9. The fruit of the womb is a reward.

  10. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth.

  11. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.

  12. He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

  13. This is the word of the Lord.

  14. When we eat lunch together after the service today,

  15. two of the questions, two of the most common questions that we'll probably ask each other

  16. are going to be, how's work going?

  17. How's the family?

  18. And I'm not trying to make you feel paranoid.

  19. These are good questions to ask one another.

  20. But it's not just in church that we ask these questions.

  21. These are the questions that we ask each other at work, at school, as we're studying, whatever we may be.

  22. If you want to be a social media influencer, if you want to get a big following on Instagram,

  23. look at the trials of work, or hustle culture, how to build, or the challenges of raising a family,

  24. and you're bound to get a big, healthy following.

  25. And when we read the words of Psalm 127, we see that those are the things that the psalmist is talking about too.

  26. He's talking about building a life, security for life, raising a family.

  27. But Psalm 127 isn't just asking us how we're getting on with that.

  28. It's forcing us to ask ourselves, what are these things really for?

  29. What kind of life are you building?

  30. What is it you're trying to protect?

  31. How are you raising a family?

  32. Does anyone know the motto for Edinburgh's coat of arms?

  33. It's Nisi Dominus Frustra.

  34. And I know that you guys all know what that means, but I don't speak Latin.

  35. But the English means, without the Lord, in vain.

  36. So, without the Lord, everything is in vain.

  37. The motto of this amazing city is Psalm 127.

  38. And what it tells us, I think it's pretty shocking when you look at it.

  39. Because it's that, without God, our work, our life building, our protection, even our family, is meaningless.

  40. And when you think about the society that we live in today, we're kind of a dichotomy.

  41. So, there's never been a time, really, I don't think, where we've had so much freedom around work,

  42. and yet we voluntarily almost imprison ourselves to our careers.

  43. Have we ever had a society that enjoys so much security and safety in one sense,

  44. but then seems to live in such fear and anxiety on the other?

  45. Have we ever had a society where children are the very epicenter of people's lives,

  46. like their whole lives revolve around what their children want, what they want to do?

  47. And yet, for other people, children, family, just seem disposable.

  48. Well, through this Psalm, we're going to learn that the anecdote for our workaholism,

  49. for our anxiety, the solution to the imbalanced way that we think about family life,

  50. is in this Psalm.

  51. I've got three points.

  52. And the first point is, what are you building on?

  53. If we look together at verse one of the Psalm, it says,

  54. So, we're not just talking about construction here.

  55. We're not all builders.

  56. But the idea of building can apply to anything that you are building in your life.

  57. So, whether you're an entrepreneur, a fireman, a software engineer, an artist,

  58. someone who's building a home,

  59. these things apply to you.

  60. These are all really important forms of building in life,

  61. and they require us to work hard.

  62. The word labor that the Psalm uses here is hard work, toil, struggle.

  63. Whether you enjoy what you do for a living or you don't,

  64. you've got to admit that sometimes work is pretty frustrating.

  65. We find it hard to get through the things that we need to do,

  66. let alone to the point where we feel like we're getting ahead.

  67. And sometimes that makes us feel overwhelmed in life,

  68. makes us feel like we're struggling to keep up

  69. while everyone else is running away ahead.

  70. But what is the thing that we feel that we're struggling to keep up with?

  71. Well, often we're drowning because we feel pressured

  72. by the material world that's around us

  73. and the material measures that people use to define success.

  74. More money, bigger house, nicer car, flashier clothes.

  75. These are the things that all around us,

  76. in our workplace, in our neighborhoods,

  77. people put such emphasis on,

  78. they look at this as a sign of what building success is.

  79. The thing about constantly pursuing more material things, though,

  80. is that it is a bottomless pit.

  81. It never ends.

  82. No matter how much you make or accumulate,

  83. we only seem to want more.

  84. We need the next thing,

  85. the extension onto our big house,

  86. or the faster car than the one that came out last year,

  87. or the new iPhone that comes out,

  88. probably in a few months' time,

  89. it's going to cost a thousand pounds and make your one old.

  90. The beast of consumption is never satisfied,

  91. no matter how much you feed it.

  92. And then all the while,

  93. as we're trying to feed this beast,

  94. work is toil.

  95. It's hard.

  96. Even if you really love what you do,

  97. you've got to admit that there's times

  98. where you face frustration.

  99. A report in 2024

  100. found that poor mental health in work,

  101. just in the UK,

  102. costs employers,

  103. just costs employers,

  104. not the country.

  105. 51 billion pounds a year.

  106. That's a number that's so big

  107. we can't visualize it.

  108. There's too many zeros

  109. to fit it into our mind's eye.

  110. So work is hard,

  111. and our relationship to work is broken.

  112. But why?

  113. How?

  114. Well, as Christians,

  115. we know why.

  116. It goes right back to the very beginning of the world,

  117. when everything was very good,

  118. and Adam and Eve lived in a beautiful garden city,

  119. and they were given everything that they could imagine,

  120. and they were given a practical purpose as well,

  121. to work the land.

  122. They weren't put there to lie on sun loungers,

  123. they were to work the land,

  124. to build it,

  125. to grow it,

  126. to expand this garden across the world.

  127. But Adam and Eve thought that they could climb the ladder,

  128. and by themselves.

  129. Achieve more without God.

  130. And they were convinced

  131. that they should do the one thing

  132. that God told them not to do.

  133. And then because they disobeyed God,

  134. in Genesis 3, 17,

  135. we're told God said,

  136. cursed is the ground because of you.

  137. In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

  138. So the very ground,

  139. that's Adam's place of work,

  140. becomes cursed

  141. because of their disobedience to God.

  142. So maybe

  143. you feel like your office is cursed,

  144. but if you want to know why work is so hard,

  145. it's because we live in a broken,

  146. fallen world.

  147. Because Adam tried to build without God.

  148. The first part of this psalm,

  149. well, it reminds us that

  150. all of our work without God

  151. is ultimately meaningless,

  152. in vain.

  153. The word vain appears three times

  154. in just these two first verses.

  155. Without God,

  156. building is empty.

  157. Without God,

  158. protecting our stuff is worthless.

  159. Without God,

  160. getting up at the crack of dawn

  161. to get ahead

  162. is totally futile.

  163. So what does that mean?

  164. Should we all just quit our jobs,

  165. set up a cute commune

  166. in the foot of the Pentlands?

  167. Well, no.

  168. The psalmist is not telling us

  169. that our work is worthless.

  170. Work is not worthless.

  171. And he's not telling us

  172. that building life is meaningless.

  173. He's saying

  174. that these things are meaningless,

  175. that these things are worthless

  176. if they're not built

  177. on the right foundation.

  178. When we build and work

  179. without acknowledging

  180. that it is for God

  181. and by God

  182. that we are working

  183. and building.

  184. You see,

  185. work isn't the punishment

  186. for Adam's disobedience.

  187. Work is purpose.

  188. That's what he was put here

  189. in the garden to do.

  190. And so when we

  191. work with obedience to God,

  192. work becomes worship.

  193. So that means that

  194. no matter what you do

  195. for a living,

  196. no matter how you spend

  197. your days building,

  198. whatever it is you're building,

  199. we're building something

  200. when we're building with God

  201. that's not going to crumble.

  202. It's not going to disintegrate

  203. into dust.

  204. Okay, second point.

  205. How do you sleep at night?

  206. So the psalmist, I think,

  207. seems to know about the UK's

  208. mental health at work crisis

  209. thousands of years ago.

  210. In the second half of verse one,

  211. he says,

  212. unless the Lord watches over the city,

  213. the watchman stays awake in vain.

  214. It's in vain that you rise up early

  215. and go to bed

  216. and go late to rest,

  217. eating the bread of anxious toil.

  218. I mean,

  219. I wonder if you can relate

  220. to getting up early,

  221. staying up late,

  222. trying to get ahead

  223. and not feeling like

  224. you're making any progress.

  225. Or maybe you have.

  226. Maybe you've got up early,

  227. you've gone to bed late

  228. and you have made progress.

  229. You've got the promotion,

  230. you've got the pay rise,

  231. you've built yourself

  232. a reputation as somebody

  233. who gets things done,

  234. but that's only resulted

  235. in you being given

  236. more to do.

  237. So you have to get up early,

  238. you have to go to bed late,

  239. you have to stay away

  240. from home longer,

  241. you have to go to bed

  242. later and later.

  243. Sometimes, maybe,

  244. for some of us,

  245. it feels like success

  246. in work itself.

  247. Without God is a curse.

  248. The more you get ahead,

  249. the more you have to work,

  250. the less you get to rest.

  251. And I think the psalmist

  252. hits the nail on the head

  253. for our society

  254. when he writes the phrase,

  255. eating the bread of anxious toil.

  256. So the bread of anxious toil

  257. is not an artisan loaf

  258. from 12 triangles.

  259. In Hebrew,

  260. the word bread

  261. can be used to refer

  262. to any form of food.

  263. So this is the way

  264. that we keep ourselves alive.

  265. And he's saying,

  266. you're giving your life

  267. over to the grind

  268. and your reward

  269. is indigestion.

  270. Have you been so anxious?

  271. Are you so anxious in life

  272. that you feel

  273. that you can't even

  274. swallow down food properly?

  275. Have you been so worried

  276. about what lies ahead,

  277. about what you might lose,

  278. that your favorite food

  279. doesn't bring you any pleasure?

  280. Have things,

  281. good things,

  282. like food and drink,

  283. almost become an anesthetic

  284. to help you cope

  285. with the pressure you feel

  286. from the people

  287. and the work

  288. that you have to do?

  289. Well,

  290. this is another question.

  291. Is that because,

  292. functionally,

  293. you're living

  294. and even eating

  295. as an atheist?

  296. Do you go to work,

  297. come to the dinner table,

  298. even,

  299. don't even get to the table.

  300. You sit on the sofa

  301. or you sit

  302. in the driver's seat

  303. of your car

  304. on your way

  305. to another meeting

  306. because you've got

  307. to keep going.

  308. And then you lie down

  309. in your bed exhausted,

  310. riddled with anxiety

  311. because you think,

  312. this is all down to me.

  313. Well,

  314. the second half of verse one

  315. speaks about protection,

  316. about keeping the things

  317. that we're building,

  318. of how futile it is

  319. to stay up all night

  320. guarding our stuff

  321. as if we can protect it

  322. on our own.

  323. when we're scrambling

  324. to hold on

  325. to our material possessions

  326. without the Lord,

  327. without relying on God,

  328. without being confident

  329. that he is with us.

  330. It's like that dream

  331. people talk about

  332. where they've got coins

  333. and they just keep

  334. falling through

  335. your fingers.

  336. That's what our material

  337. stuff is like.

  338. We can't hold on to it.

  339. J.D. Rockefeller,

  340. when he died,

  341. he was,

  342. they said that he was

  343. the richest man

  344. in the world.

  345. probably the richest man

  346. that I'd ever been.

  347. And somebody asked

  348. his accountant,

  349. how much did he leave?

  350. And his accountant said,

  351. he left all of it.

  352. The psalmist is saying,

  353. worrying,

  354. building,

  355. and protecting in life

  356. becomes meaningless.

  357. But he's saying

  358. it's meaningless

  359. because we don't rely on God.

  360. So here it is,

  361. right at the end of verse 2,

  362. in the center of this psalm,

  363. here's the solution

  364. to our tendency

  365. to fall into workaholism

  366. on one hand,

  367. anxiety on the other.

  368. The Lord gives

  369. his beloved sleep.

  370. C.S. Lewis,

  371. who wrote the Narnia series,

  372. was a Christian thinker as well.

  373. And he said this about work.

  374. He said,

  375. if we thought we were

  376. building up a heaven on earth,

  377. if we looked for something

  378. that would turn the present world

  379. from a black pilgrimage

  380. into a permanent city

  381. satisfying the soul of man,

  382. we're disillusioned.

  383. But if we thought

  384. that for some souls,

  385. and at some times,

  386. the life of learning,

  387. humbly offered to God,

  388. was in its own small way

  389. one of the appointed approaches

  390. to the divine reality

  391. and the divine beauty

  392. to which we hope

  393. to enjoy hereafter,

  394. we can think so still.

  395. So Lewis is saying

  396. that whether you're

  397. an engineer,

  398. a joiner,

  399. a nursery teacher,

  400. we can rest safe

  401. in the knowledge

  402. that when we're working

  403. with God,

  404. we are working

  405. for God's kingdom.

  406. And as Lewis puts it,

  407. we can think so still.

  408. Or as Psalm 127 puts it,

  409. the Lord gives

  410. his beloved sleep.

  411. It's such a humbling

  412. humbling and beautiful reminder

  413. of the limits of humanity,

  414. the limits that we have ourselves,

  415. our own frailty,

  416. and also God's care

  417. for his people,

  418. that every night

  419. we have to lie down

  420. for about a third of our lives

  421. and be blind,

  422. defenseless,

  423. unconscious

  424. for hours at a time.

  425. There's a beautiful song

  426. by a Scottish singer-songwriter,

  427. he's called John Martin,

  428. and it's called

  429. May You Never,

  430. and the repeated refrain

  431. in that song

  432. is,

  433. may you never lay your head down

  434. without a hand to hold,

  435. may you never make your bed

  436. out in the cold.

  437. And this is what Psalm 127

  438. is telling us

  439. about God

  440. and sleep.

  441. anxious about

  442. what you're building

  443. or about how you're going

  444. to hold on

  445. to the things

  446. that you have.

  447. God's saying to everyone

  448. who trusts him,

  449. come and lay down,

  450. take my hand,

  451. and know

  452. that I'm watching

  453. over you.

  454. And God gives

  455. his beloved sleep.

  456. This is a precious gift,

  457. in fact,

  458. sleep's two precious gifts

  459. in one.

  460. It refreshes us

  461. and it restains us

  462. but it also reminds us

  463. that we're not in control

  464. and that God is.

  465. And that means

  466. that our life

  467. doesn't come down

  468. to us.

  469. We sang Psalm 121

  470. earlier on

  471. and that Psalm asks,

  472. when I look to the hills,

  473. fearing danger,

  474. where will my help

  475. come from?

  476. And the answer is,

  477. the Lord keeps me.

  478. And that word keep,

  479. in Psalm 121,

  480. it's used

  481. six different times

  482. and it's the same route

  483. that we have

  484. in Psalm 127

  485. for watchers over

  486. or watchmen.

  487. So while

  488. Psalm 127

  489. tells us

  490. that God

  491. gifts

  492. his people sleep,

  493. Psalm 121

  494. reminds us

  495. that God

  496. never sleeps.

  497. And so we can lay down

  498. safe and secure

  499. in the fact

  500. that

  501. although we can't guard

  502. all the things

  503. of our lives,

  504. God can.

  505. Do you feel like

  506. you're in need

  507. of this secure,

  508. peace-filled,

  509. life-giving sleep?

  510. Because I do.

  511. Which is probably why

  512. Matthew,

  513. Matthew chapter 11,

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  514. 28 to 30

  515. is my favorite

  516. verses

  517. in the Bible.

  518. Jesus says,

  519. come to me,

  520. all you who labor

  521. and are heavy laden,

  522. and I will give you rest.

  523. Take my yoke upon you

  524. and learn from me,

  525. for I'm gentle

  526. and lowly in heart

  527. and you will find rest

  528. for your souls,

  529. for my yoke is easy

  530. and my burden

  531. is light.

  532. And then it's interesting

  533. that straight after

  534. recounting these words,

  535. Matthew writes

  536. that Jesus is Lord

  537. of the Sabbath,

  538. the God-ordained

  539. time of resting in him.

  540. It's also a shadow

  541. of the wonderful

  542. forever rest

  543. that lies ahead

  544. of people

  545. who put their trust

  546. in Jesus.

  547. So if you want to rest

  548. from the anxiety

  549. of toil,

  550. the struggle

  551. of building

  552. and protecting life,

  553. accept Jesus

  554. and come to him.

  555. Put on Jesus' yoke

  556. which is light

  557. and easy.

  558. But here's the thing,

  559. to put on

  560. this light

  561. and easy yoke,

  562. we have to take off

  563. the heavy,

  564. difficult yoke

  565. of whatever it is

  566. that's dragging us down.

  567. Is it living up

  568. to people's expectations?

  569. Is it protecting

  570. the things that you have

  571. because you think

  572. it all relies

  573. on you?

  574. Life doesn't become easy

  575. necessarily overnight

  576. when you put your trust

  577. in Jesus.

  578. It's not what he's

  579. saying here.

  580. But it does become

  581. more peaceful

  582. because we rest

  583. not in what we've

  584. stored up for a rainy

  585. day,

  586. but because of what

  587. God has done

  588. through Jesus,

  589. his beloved,

  590. for his beloved.

  591. And that takes us

  592. to our third,

  593. final point.

  594. Who is our

  595. eternal inheritance?

  596. Well,

  597. the psalmist has told us

  598. that one gift from God

  599. has been able to sleep

  600. even although we're

  601. traveling through

  602. a cursed world

  603. and working

  604. in a cursed workplace.

  605. And that tells us

  606. of a second blessing

  607. that he gives to people

  608. and that's children.

  609. Verse 3 says,

  610. Behold,

  611. children are a heritage

  612. from the Lord,

  613. the fruit of the womb

  614. a reward.

  615. He calls his children

  616. a heritage,

  617. an inheritance,

  618. and he calls them

  619. a reward or wages.

  620. So,

  621. first of all,

  622. I think maybe poignantly

  623. that it's Mother's Day

  624. today,

  625. I didn't plan this,

  626. but it gives

  627. incredible honor

  628. to those who

  629. are raising children.

  630. So,

  631. those precious souls,

  632. precious gifts

  633. from God.

  634. When I was in school,

  635. we would say,

  636. my mom just

  637. stays at home.

  638. Just.

  639. C.S. Lewis

  640. would disagree

  641. with that just.

  642. To paraphrase something

  643. he wrote in a letter once

  644. about,

  645. it's a woman

  646. who was struggling

  647. being a mom,

  648. everything was difficult.

  649. And he said,

  650. the homemaker

  651. has the ultimate career.

  652. All other careers

  653. exist for one purpose

  654. and that's to support

  655. the ultimate career.

  656. So,

  657. keeping those at home

  658. fed,

  659. warm,

  660. and safe

  661. is the most important job

  662. that there is,

  663. Lewis says.

  664. But it's not

  665. a career

  666. where you get

  667. pay rises.

  668. You don't get

  669. promotions,

  670. you don't get

  671. an OBE

  672. for services

  673. to staying up

  674. for 72 hours

  675. straight

  676. while your kids

  677. are vomiting.

  678. But the Lord knows.

  679. He knows

  680. that you read

  681. your Bible

  682. to your children

  683. when nobody else

  684. could possibly know.

  685. He knows that

  686. when you hold

  687. your baby crying

  688. and praying

  689. at 3am

  690. when you feel

  691. like everyone else

  692. in the world

  693. is asleep.

  694. He knows

  695. that you need

  696. him to be there

  697. with you.

  698. The psalmist

  699. is saying

  700. to you,

  701. carer,

  702. the Lord knows.

  703. And the Lord's

  704. not putting

  705. a tally mark

  706. onto your sheet

  707. saying,

  708. good job,

  709. well done.

  710. It's a credit

  711. to your account.

  712. He's saying,

  713. my beloved,

  714. I'm right here

  715. with you

  716. singing with you

  717. to your little baby.

  718. As you teach them

  719. to pray,

  720. I'm with you.

  721. I'm the one

  722. making those

  723. precious seeds grow.

  724. Trust me

  725. to care for you

  726. as you care

  727. for your children.

  728. And then in verses

  729. 4 and 5,

  730. the psalmist

  731. kind of suddenly

  732. changes tone

  733. because he chooses

  734. battle language

  735. to describe children.

  736. He calls them

  737. arrows in the hands

  738. of a warrior.

  739. He calls the one

  740. who has them blessed.

  741. The one with many

  742. children will not

  743. be put to shame

  744. in front of his enemies.

  745. So in the ancient world,

  746. children,

  747. and particularly

  748. sons,

  749. because of the society

  750. they lived in,

  751. they were protection.

  752. More men

  753. meant more power.

  754. And having sons

  755. was a sign of blessing

  756. because it literally

  757. meant you had

  758. more workforce,

  759. more soldiers,

  760. whatever you need

  761. those men

  762. to be.

  763. The references

  764. to being not

  765. to be shamed

  766. in the city gates

  767. because in those days

  768. they would gather

  769. at the gates

  770. of the city

  771. and make decisions,

  772. make judgments

  773. about how things

  774. were going

  775. to be handled.

  776. So having somebody

  777. in the family

  778. capable of representing

  779. you well

  780. was super important.

  781. So I think

  782. we can think

  783. about children

  784. as arrows

  785. in terms of the church.

  786. So the church

  787. passes from generation

  788. to generation

  789. and in itself

  790. is extraordinary

  791. when you think

  792. about that.

  793. And it's through

  794. covenant children

  795. that the church

  796. will continue right

  797. until the very end

  798. of the age.

  799. These arrows

  800. are prepared

  801. and they're sent.

  802. That's also how God

  803. through the church

  804. pushes back

  805. into the darkness,

  806. pushing against

  807. the forces of darkness

  808. with a quiver

  809. full of shards

  810. of light.

  811. We were

  812. in the garden

  813. a little while ago

  814. thinking about

  815. work

  816. and protection

  817. takes us back there

  818. as well I think

  819. because Adam

  820. was to work

  821. in the garden

  822. but he was also

  823. part of that job

  824. was to protect it

  825. and he failed.

  826. He failed twice

  827. as a protector.

  828. He failed to protect

  829. the garden

  830. but he also failed

  831. to protect his eve

  832. from the snake.

  833. And this just shows us

  834. how desperately

  835. we need

  836. a protector.

  837. Someone who will come

  838. and protect us.

  839. We need a son

  840. who can place us

  841. in a garden

  842. and never let anyone

  843. come and harm us.

  844. The talk of children

  845. can sometimes feel

  846. awkward or problematic

  847. because we know

  848. that not everybody

  849. is going to be a parent

  850. and that's utterly

  851. heartbreaking for people

  852. and

  853. it feels as though

  854. speaking about children

  855. is something

  856. difficult to do.

  857. but we know

  858. that the Lord

  859. can bring peace

  860. to even the most

  861. broken hearted.

  862. If that's you

  863. if you're in that position

  864. you're not any less

  865. beloved

  866. because God

  867. hasn't given you

  868. children.

  869. So to help us

  870. understand the full

  871. significance

  872. I think

  873. of what this message

  874. about children

  875. really means

  876. we need to think

  877. about the psalm

  878. in the original

  879. context

  880. that it exists.

  881. this is a psalm

  882. of ascent

  883. so this would have

  884. been likely sung

  885. by the children

  886. of Israel

  887. as they journeyed

  888. up to Jerusalem

  889. to worship God

  890. in the temple

  891. and to commemorate

  892. their great feasts.

  893. So there's 15 psalms

  894. of ascent

  895. and psalm 127

  896. is the one right

  897. in the middle

  898. like the peak

  899. in the pyramid

  900. and this psalm

  901. is attributed

  902. to Solomon

  903. so Solomon

  904. was king of Israel

  905. I don't know

  906. if it was

  907. two by or for Solomon

  908. different people

  909. think different things

  910. maybe he commissioned

  911. the song

  912. because he was the one

  913. who built the temple

  914. and that's where

  915. God's priests served

  916. on behalf of the people

  917. or maybe it was

  918. written by Solomon

  919. we know that he wrote

  920. 1005 songs

  921. or maybe it's dedicated

  922. to Solomon

  923. because he's the one

  924. who's kind of

  925. the epitome

  926. of human success

  927. he's got all the wealth

  928. and all the knowledge

  929. the wisdom

  930. but he came

  931. to a disappointing end

  932. when he started

  933. to build without the Lord

  934. people used to say

  935. or some people say

  936. that this psalm

  937. is actually

  938. two proverbs

  939. kind of spliced together

  940. so you've got

  941. the first couple of verses

  942. that are about building

  943. and then you've got

  944. the next three verses

  945. that are about children

  946. but I don't think

  947. that's the case

  948. and one of the reasons

  949. I think that that's

  950. not the case

  951. that this psalm

  952. is clearly one

  953. combined thought

  954. is a play on words

  955. in the story

  956. of 2 Samuel 7

  957. so there David

  958. who's Solomon's dad

  959. David's king

  960. and he decides himself

  961. that he's going to

  962. build a house

  963. to the Lord

  964. but God says to David

  965. you're going to build

  966. me a house

  967. no

  968. I'm going to build

  969. you a house

  970. when David said house

  971. like in verse 1

  972. he meant a temple

  973. he's going to build

  974. a temple for the Lord

  975. but when God said house

  976. he meant a dynasty

  977. or a heritage

  978. like in verse 3

  979. God was going to build

  980. David

  981. a kingly line

  982. of succession

  983. and Solomon

  984. inherited his father's throne

  985. but it's from

  986. this Davidic

  987. kingly line

  988. that the true

  989. the great

  990. king

  991. was going to come

  992. in Matthew

  993. we can read

  994. Jesus' genealogy

  995. and it tells us

  996. the genealogy

  997. of Jesus Christ

  998. the son of David

  999. so Jesus

  1000. it's Jesus

  1001. who's the true

  1002. fulfillment

  1003. of the kingly

  1004. house of David

  1005. Solomon

  1006. he built

  1007. a physical temple

  1008. a house

  1009. where God

  1010. would dwell

  1011. God's presence

  1012. would be

  1013. with his people

  1014. but Jesus

  1015. is the temple

  1016. God himself

  1017. come to live

  1018. with his people

  1019. and Jesus

  1020. is also

  1021. the forever priest

  1022. in the temple

  1023. who makes sacrifices

  1024. and stands

  1025. before God

  1026. on behalf

  1027. of his people

  1028. so Jesus

  1029. is the temple

  1030. and Jesus

  1031. also said

  1032. he was going

  1033. to make

  1034. his people

  1035. his church

  1036. to be a living

  1037. temple

  1038. in Genesis

  1039. Jesus

  1040. God didn't just

  1041. curse the ground

  1042. and leave it

  1043. to rot

  1044. he promised

  1045. that the offspring

  1046. of the woman

1047. the fruit of her womb

  1048. would come

  1049. and crush

  1050. the enemy

  1051. and that's Jesus

  1052. Jesus has come

  1053. and he's broken

  1054. the curse

  1055. and even although

  1056. we're still living

  1057. in a world

  1058. that's fallen

  1059. and broken

  1060. and where

  1061. work and security

  1062. and even family

  1063. so often feel

  1064. difficult

  1065. when we put

  1066. our trust

  1067. in Jesus

  1068. we get to

  1069. live

  1070. in him

  1071. work

  1072. rest

  1073. and praying

  1074. because we're

  1075. covered

  1076. by his righteousness

  1077. his goodness

  1078. so that means

  1079. that while

  1080. work rest

  1081. and play

  1082. might still be hard

  1083. God is teaching us

1084. that he is with us

  1085. but also

  1086. that something

  1087. better

  1088. is waiting

  1089. for us

  1090. in John 14

  1091. 2

  1092. Jesus says

  1093. he's going

  1094. to prepare

  1095. a place

  1096. for his people

  1097. in his father's

  1098. house

  1099. the forever

  1100. temple

  1101. so Jesus

  1102. is the one

  1103. from the kingly

  1104. line of David

  1105. who wasn't

  1106. welcomed

  1107. as a king

  1108. but who was

  1109. mocked

  1110. and slandered

  1111. and rejected

  1112. who wasn't

  1113. defended

  1114. in the gate

  1115. in front of his

  1116. enemies

  1117. but he was put

  1118. outside the city

  1119. to die

  1120. despite his

  1121. divine power

  1122. and strength

  1123. he didn't pursue

  1124. riches

  1125. or wealth

  1126. even his own

  1127. comfort

  1128. but he humbled

  1129. himself

  1130. and completed

  1131. the work

  1132. that God

  1133. gave him

  1134. to do

  1135. even to the

  1136. point

  1137. of death

  1138. God's beloved

  1139. became cursed

  1140. for us

  1141. not so that

  1142. we can make

  1143. more money

  1144. or get bigger

  1145. houses

  1146. or even

  1147. as heartbreaking

  1148. as it is

  1149. for some

  1150. people

  1151. to have

  1152. a family

  1153. so that we

  1154. can live

  1155. in this

  1156. new garden

  1157. city

  1158. that was

  1159. designed

  1160. and built

  1161. by God

  1162. where work

  1163. will never

  1164. be in vain

  1165. but will be

  1166. utterly

  1167. satisfying

  1168. where peace

  1169. and tranquility

  1170. will reign

  1171. because God

  1172. will live

  1173. with his

  1174. people

  1175. at the end

  1176. of the Bible

  1177. it talks

  1178. about

  1179. Jesus

  1180. as a

  1181. bridegroom

  1182. coming

  1183. for his

  1184. bride

  1185. and that's

  1186. the church

  1187. the bride

  1188. of Christ

  1189. is the church

  1190. when instead

  1191. of eating

  1192. anxious toil

  1193. the bread

  1194. of anxious toil

  1195. will feast

  1196. with Jesus

  1197. at a marriage

  1198. supper

  1199. Jesus finished

  1200. the work

  1201. that God

  1202. his father

  1203. gave him

  1204. to do

  1205. so that he

  1206. could bring

  1207. his people

  1208. glorious

  1209. blissful

  1210. eternal

  1211. rest

  1212. let's

  1213. pray

  1214. Lord God

  1215. we ask

  1216. that you

  1217. would bless

  1218. us to this

  1219. day

  1220. we

  1221. confess

  1222. we so

  1223. often

  1224. attempt

  1225. to build

  1226. our lives

  1227. on foundations

  1228. that are not

  1229. sure and

  1230. certain

  1231. we're often

  1232. so

  1233. tempted

  1234. to build

  1235. on our

  1236. own strength

  1237. or rely

  1238. on other

  1239. people

  1240. put pressure

  1241. on them

  1242. to deliver

  1243. for us

  1244. Lord help

  1245. us to be

  1246. looking to

  1247. you for

  1248. everything

  1249. that we

  1250. need

  1251. realizing

  1252. that Jesus

  1253. is our

  1254. greatest

  1255. treasure

  1256. the true

  1257. treasure

  1258. the one

  1259. thing

  1260. needful

  1261. and that

  1262. we would

  1263. be

  1264. our whole

  1265. lives

  1266. would be

  1267. oriented

  1268. around

  1269. pursuing

  1270. him

  1271. forgive us

  1272. for our

  1273. sins

  1274. in Jesus

  1275. name

  1276. Amen
