  1. Please have a seat, and perhaps you could turn with me in your Bible to Galatians. I want to look at passages from chapters 2 and 3, page 1169.

  2. ! We've been thinking about the good news that we must never forget, this good news that comes from God, this good news that we are justified, not by our own record of righteousness, but by faith in the Lord Jesus.

  3. This week we're thinking about how vital this message is, thinking about the vital news of real freedom in the good news of Jesus.

  4. It's recognized, certainly in the Western world, that freedom is one of those basic human rights.

  5. I'll take you back to the summer of 2020, in the months following the killing of George Floyd.

  6. I remember the worldwide anti-racism protests.

  7. And down in Bristol, down in the southeast of England, there was this famous scene where the statue of a chap by the name of Edward Colston, you can see it there, was toppled into the sea.

  8. In 1721, the statue was erected with the inscription, you know, Edward Colston, great benefactor of the city of Bristol.

  9. So, fast forward 300 years, and he's become the great villain.

  10. And the question is, why the change?

  11. Why was the statue toppled?

  12. Well, the statue was toppled because he was somebody who had made his wealth through the trading of black slaves.

  13. And that was seen as beyond the pale.

  14. And so, he was toppled.

  15. Today, we recognize freedom is a basic human right.

  16. Many of us are perhaps familiar with how the U.S. Declaration of Independence begins, 1776.

  17. We hold these truths to be self-evident.

  18. That all men are created equal.

  19. That they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.

  20. That among these are life, liberty, there's the freedom word, and the pursuit of happiness.

  21. Now, we take it as self-evident today.

  22. But sociologists recognize, if you look back through history, since the earliest times, all known societies were actually slave societies.

  23. So, what brought the change that means we think that freedom is something that's so essential and vital?

  24. Why do we say, you know, any kind of slavery is wrong and should be toppled?

  25. And it's really interesting to see that Christians and atheists both recognize that within Western society, it's the Christian worldview that accounts for that.

  26. We come to the book of Galatians, written in the mid-40s A.D.

  27. And we didn't hear this verse, but let me read it.

  28. Chapter 5, verse 1.

  29. Here's a great statement from Paul as he writes this letter.

  30. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

  31. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

  32. So, Paul writes this letter with this great cry of freedom that is a particular kind of slavery that Paul the Apostle wants to topple.

  33. And it's the slavery of legalism.

  34. It's the slavery of the idea that we need faith in Jesus plus our own good works if we are to be right with God.

  35. And Paul says, down with that, that's false thinking.

  36. And what he defends and what he celebrates and what he says is vital is that there is freedom in Christ.

  37. So, we're going to take two key verses in his letter.

  38. We read them both, Galatians 2.20 and Galatians 3.28.

  39. We're going to explore two different aspects of God's gospel freedom.

  40. And we're going to see how these themes connect with both the desires within our own hearts for freedom,

  41. but also how it creates the path towards the kind of world and society and community that we're looking for.

  42. So, the good news that we must never forget is that faith in Jesus brings us real freedom.

  43. That we are no longer slaves.

  44. We're not slaves to performance, and we're not slaves to lines of division.

  45. So, let's think about this idea, first of all, this freedom that comes through faith,

  46. this freedom that says we are not slaves to performance.

  47. Some of you may be familiar with the Korean philosopher who now works in Germany called Byung Chul Han.

  48. He wrote a little book that's become really popular called The Burnout Society.

  49. And in that little book, he argues that modern life is creating anxieties and depressions.

  50. He uses the image of being consumed by work.

  51. We are never able to switch off.

  52. There is the pressure of competition to find work or within a workplace.

  53. We want more stuff.

  54. And so, we recognize to get more stuff, we need to earn more money so we work harder and we work longer.

  55. And there's a consumption because of work.

  56. And then you add the message of our culture, which from a very early age says to us,

  57. you can define and redefine yourself.

  58. You can be and do anything you want.

  59. And that sounds wonderful until we recognize the kind of pressure that puts on people.

  60. And what if you can't?

  61. What if you can't reach that standard?

  62. What if you feel that you're stuck?

  63. And then we come to life today in the digital world and we watch stories and there are reels and there are videos.

  64. And we feel, again, a pressure, perhaps subliminal, sometimes more overt,

  65. to be more adventurous, more beautiful, more witty and wise, more creative.

  66. And so many people in our society, and that includes us as Christians, are discovering,

  67. if I have to justify myself, if I have to prove myself, that's exhausting.

  68. There's no peace in that way of life.

  69. There's no security in that way of life.

  70. There's no joy to be found there.

  71. And so as we begin, I wonder, do you recognize something of yourself in that?

  72. Have you or are you trapped on the treadmill of performance?

  73. Remember Galatians chapter 5, verse 1.

    Galatians 5:1

  74. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

  75. The church in Galatia needed to hear this message of freedom from a particular kind of performance.

  76. So if you weren't here last week, just to very briefly remind you of the situation,

  77. we have Paul the apostle writing this letter in great grief.

  78. He's defending the true gospel against a false message that the church is being pulled towards.

  79. There's a group of false teachers.

  80. They're legalistic.

  81. They're saying you need to add law keeping to faith in Jesus if you want to be justified.

  82. If you really want to be a member of God's church, you need to prove yourself by your moral performance.

  83. And this toxic teaching has spread through the church.

  84. So even Peter the apostle has come under its spell.

  85. He's become guilty in chapter 2, verse 11, onwards of hypocrisy.

  86. So he knows.

  87. Acts chapter 10, if you read your McShane Bible reading plan, you'll have read Acts chapter 10.

Acts 10 chapter mention Acts 10 chapter mention

  88. Peter has come to discover God shows no favoritism.

  89. He knows the gospel.

  90. Jesus is all you need for salvation, but his actions in a particular moment are denying those truths.

  91. Because he says, unless you keep a diet like the Jews, I'm not going to share fellowship and hospitality with you.

  92. And so Paul speaks and acts and writes in this kind of context because he understands

  93. that any view of religion and any worldview that says you and I need to perform to be saved and to be accepted,

  94. it cannot offer real hope.

  95. It cuts us off from Jesus and it severs us from real joy.

  96. Because if it is in any way about me or about you, how good is good enough?

  97. What is the standard that we apply?

  98. What happens to my salvation if I have a bad day or a really spectacular fail?

  99. And one of the reasons that Paul writes this letter is to remind the church in every generation

  100. that if we want to apply God's law to our lives and say, this is the standard,

  101. and if I can just keep this standard, then God will be pleased with me.

  102. We need to take that really, really seriously.

  103. Because unlike our school or uni exams, God doesn't grade on a curve.

  104. He doesn't say, well, 70%, that satisfies for a top-level mark.

  105. Or if the exam is particularly difficult, let me lower the bar.

  106. God doesn't do that with his law.

  107. In fact, what the Bible says is that if we fail at even one point in law obedience,

  108. then the whole law is broken.

  109. If we don't love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength,

  110. with all of our energy all of the time,

  111. then the law is broken and we are guilty.

  112. If we don't love our neighbor with the same energy and creativity and love that we apply to ourselves,

  113. then we are guilty of breaking the law.

  114. And remember who our God is.

  115. God is holy.

  116. He is perfect and he is just.

  117. And so he will not accept our excuses.

  118. Circumstances made me.

  119. And he will not and he cannot sweep sin under the rug.

  120. So if we try and make the basis of our salvation our performance,

  121. we will always find ourselves failing.

  122. Over the holidays, we watched David Attenborough's Wild London show.

  123. I don't know if any of you saw it.

  124. It's a really lovely show.

  125. David Attenborough loves the city that he grew up in.

  126. And there's this really nice scene with the hedgehogs.

  127. We love hedgehogs.

  128. They're very cute.

  129. Hedgehogs are blind, almost blind.

  130. And so there was this scene of this one hedgehog

  131. desperately trying to get to the food that it needed

  132. and trying to find its way to a mate.

  133. But in London, as in all places, when you have gardens,

  134. you have fences and you have walls.

  135. And so this poor, blind hedgehog was trying to get to where it needed to go,

  136. but was literally bashing its head against a garden fence.

  137. No access and no hope,

  138. except that the kind people of London have been creating hedgehog highways,

  139. cutting out little holes at the bottom of their garden fences

  140. so that hedgehogs can move from one garden to the other

  141. and find the lady hedgehog and the food that they need.

  142. And all is well that ends well.

  143. Why am I telling you a story about hedgehogs?

  144. Because the Bible would say to us

  145. that you and I, by nature, are exactly like that blind hedgehog.

  146. And that when we try to perform to enter the kingdom of God,

  147. to find life with God,

  148. we will come to recognize that we are spiritually blind,

  149. we are bashing our heads against the wall of God's law

  150. and our broken sin.

  151. And what we need is someone to open the way for us.

  152. And that's where the gospel comes in.

  153. Because the gospel that Paul is talking about says,

  154. listen, stop looking at your own performance.

  155. The only performance that matters

  156. is the perfect performance of the Lord Jesus

  157. in His life, in His death, and His resurrection.

  158. And the Lord Jesus, by His grace,

  159. has created a heavenly highway for us,

  160. a way back to God,

  161. the means by which you and I,

  162. simply by faith in Jesus,

  163. are declared righteous,

  164. just and accepted by God through faith in Him.

  165. And on that basis,

  166. faith saves us,

  167. and faith is also how we live the Christian life.

  168. And that's exactly the point that Paul makes

  169. at the end of chapter 2.

  170. Galatians chapter 2, verse 20.

    Galatians 2:20

  171. I have been crucified with Christ,

  172. and I no longer live,

  173. but Christ lives in me.

  174. The life I now live in the body,

  175. I live by faith

  176. in the Son of God

  177. who loved me

  178. and gave Himself for me.

  179. This is the key to living the Christian life.

  180. Freedom comes

  181. when we are in Jesus Christ.

  182. When we understand

  183. that He has died for us,

  184. that He has loved us

  185. and given Himself for us,

  186. and that now by faith,

  187. He lives in us.

  188. In fact, He is our life.

  189. Here's where the freedom of faith comes.

  190. By faith,

  191. we share

  192. in what happened to Jesus.

  193. So just as Jesus died on the cross,

  194. so we die to the law

  195. as the way to get right with God.

  196. And we die to sin

  197. because the power and penalty of sin

  198. has been broken in our lives.

  199. And we now die to self

  200. so we can live to Christ.

  201. We have a new identity.

  202. We die to that idea of legalism.

  203. I need to perform

  204. if I'm going to belong to God.

  205. And by faith,

  206. we get the security we look for.

  207. We are secure in Christ.

  208. Martin Luther put it this way,

  209. by faith,

  210. you are so cemented to Christ

  211. that He and you are one person

  212. which cannot be separated

  213. but remains attached to Him forever.

  214. That's the gospel that gives us security.

  215. Whatever is true of Jesus

  216. is true of us.

  217. Wherever Jesus has gone,

  218. so we follow.

  219. And by faith,

  220. Paul says to us,

  221. we have a new source

  222. for living our lives.

  223. We're not relying on our own strength.

  224. Rather,

  225. we rely on Christ in us.

  226. And so the Christian

  227. and the Christian church,

  228. we sing,

  229. Christ is our life.

  230. He is my strength.

  231. He is my peace.

  232. He is my source of love and joy.

  233. He is my holiness.

  234. He is my hope.

  235. So that to be justified

  236. by faith in Jesus

  237. is to be set free

  238. from slavery

  239. to the performance mindset.

  240. It's to have freedom

  241. to rest and trust

  242. in Christ alone

  243. for our salvation.

  244. We are a burnout society.

  245. And some of you have been there.

  246. How can you and I

  247. avoid spiritual burnout?

  248. Only as we leave behind

  249. that idea of performing

  250. to be accepted.

  251. Only as we believe

  252. and trust

  253. in the gospel

  254. that says it's through faith

  255. in Jesus Christ alone,

  256. by God's grace alone,

  257. that I'm saved.

  258. Perhaps it might be helpful

  259. at the start of the year

  260. to perform

  261. a spiritual health check.

  262. How would you honestly answer

  263. these questions?

  264. Do you think God accepts you

  265. only if you are good enough?

  266. Do you believe that God

  267. loves you more

  268. if you have a good day spiritually?

  269. Do you find it difficult

  270. to admit sin and failure

  271. to God and to others?

  272. There are many more questions

  273. that we could ask,

  274. but we need to understand

  275. that the temptation

  276. towards legalism

  277. is real.

  278. It happened to Peter.

  279. It happened to that church

  280. in Galatia.

  281. And you and I,

  282. we need to always be coming back

  283. to this good news

  284. that we're justified

  285. by faith alone,

  286. to believe that gospel,

  287. to preach that gospel

  288. to ourselves,

  289. and to live by faith

  290. in Jesus each day.

  291. This evening,

  292. we're thinking

  293. about the secure identity

  294. that we have

  295. as a child of God.

  296. That's the answer.

  297. So we have freedom

  298. through faith,

  299. so we're no longer

  300. slaves to performance.

  301. But secondly,

  302. because we have freedom

  303. in Christ,

  304. we are no longer

  305. slaves to dividing lines

  306. that we see so often

  307. in our society.

  308. If we go back

  309. to the protest movements

  310. that we've been seeing

  311. in the last few years,

  312. what message does that

  313. tell us about the society

  314. in which we live?

  315. Think about the

  316. Black Lives Matter movement.

  317. What does that say to us?

  318. It says to us,

  319. sadly,

  320. tragically,

  321. racism is real.

  322. What did the Me Too movement

  323. remind us of

  324. over and over?

  325. Violence against women

  326. is real.

  327. What did the protests

  328. that we see

  329. outside G8 summits

  330. or in front of big business

  331. say to us?

  332. The inequality

  333. of rich and poor

  334. is real.

  335. Our society

  336. often seems better

  337. at building walls

  338. than we are

  339. at building bridges.

  340. whether that's

  341. in person

  342. or digitally.

  343. That rise

  344. in tribalism,

  345. in hate,

  346. we focus on

  347. what divides us

  348. more than what

  349. brings us together.

  350. And it's really

  351. interesting that the

  352. first century world

  353. actually was not

  354. so different.

  355. When we turn

  356. to Galatians chapter

  357. three

  358. and those end

  359. verses,

  360. Paul identifies

  361. the big three

  362. forms of division

  363. and prejudice

  364. in his day.

  365. Hear what he says

  366. in chapter three

  367. verse 28.

  368. There is neither

  369. Jew nor Gentile,

  370. neither slave nor free,

  371. nor is there

  372. male and female,

  373. for you are all

  374. one in Christ

  375. Jesus.

  376. One of the most

  377. amazing things

  378. about the story

  379. of the early church

  380. in the first few

  381. centuries

  382. is the way

  383. that they tore

  384. down those

  385. barriers in the

  386. Roman world.

  387. That this message

  388. of freedom

  389. in Christ

  390. had explosive

  391. power.

  392. So here,

  393. for the very

  394. first time,

  395. it seemed like,

  396. women found

  397. honor and protection

  398. and they flocked

  399. to the church.

  400. Slaves that were

  401. dispossessed,

  402. they could become

  403. leaders and they

  404. could worship

  405. with their masters

  406. and so they loved

  407. the message

  408. of the gospel

  409. and the culture

  410. gap was bridged.

  411. that Jew and Gentile

  412. who normally hated

  413. each other

  414. would gather together

  415. to worship

  416. in one house

  417. in one church.

  418. And it was amazing

  419. and as people saw

  420. this radically

  421. different community,

  422. they were drawn

  423. to ask,

  424. what is it that makes

  425. this place,

  426. this people,

  427. this message

  428. so different

  429. and so wonderful?

  430. And that helps us

  431. to remember

  432. why the letter

  433. to the Galatians

  434. is so important

  435. because this was

  436. under threat.

  437. The church

  438. was wrestling

  439. with this message.

  440. What is the basis

  441. for belonging

  442. to God's church?

  443. Is God's grace

  444. powerful enough

  445. to unite those

  446. who are normally

  447. divided?

  448. Can a multi-ethnic

  449. church of rich

  450. and poor

  451. of male and female,

  452. can it really flourish?

  453. Can it show

  454. the beauty

  455. of the gospel?

  456. And Paul's answer

  457. through this letter

  458. and it's the message

  459. of the whole Bible

  460. is that yes,

  461. it can flourish

  462. and indeed

  463. it must.

  464. This is God's

  465. design for His church.

  466. But it's not easy

  467. and that's what we see

  468. in Galatia.

  469. If God's design

  470. for His church

  471. were to be

  472. sort of captured

  473. in an artwork

  474. in a canvas,

  475. it wouldn't be

  476. the canvas

  477. of geometric shapes,

  478. of nice,

  479. clear,

  480. crisp lines

  481. of everything

  482. black and white.

  483. Perhaps it would be

  484. more like,

  485. I'm no art critic,

  486. but you know

  487. when you go into

  488. a gallery,

  489. perhaps a modern art gallery,

  490. and you see those paintings

  491. and you think,

  492. a five-year-old

  493. could have done that.

  494. You know when you just get

  495. that sort of mess

  496. of color

  497. and swirl

  498. and it all kind of

  499. blends in together

  500. and it's messy

  501. but you're kind of

  502. drawn to it,

  503. that's the church

  504. by God's design.

  505. It is messy

  506. to figure out

  507. how these people

  508. can come together

  509. but there's something

  510. beautiful

  511. in this kind

  512. of community.

  513. And Paul,

  514. here in chapter 3

  515. verses 26 to 29

  516. shows how the gospel

  517. has the power

  518. to create

  519. this new community.

  520. Verse 26,

  521. so in Christ Jesus

  522. you are all

  523. children of God

  524. through faith.

  525. All believers

  526. are part of

  527. God's family.

  528. One father

  529. would become

  530. brothers and sisters.

  531. That's a unifying principle.

  532. Verse 27,

  533. all believers

  534. have a new

  535. identification.

  536. For all of you

  537. who are baptized

  538. into Christ

  539. have clothed

  540. yourself with Christ.

  541. So all of these

  542. Gentiles

  543. who are becoming

  544. Christians

  545. for the first time,

  546. they're getting baptized

  547. and they're doing

  548. that as a public

  549. statement.

  550. I now identify

  551. with Jesus as Lord.

  552. I'm not going to

  553. worship Caesar

  554. and the gods of Rome.

  555. I identify

  556. with Jesus as Lord.

  557. And then Paul

  558. uses this imagery

  559. of being clothed

  560. with Christ.

  561. And that's an

  562. interesting image

  563. when in that day

  564. when you moved

  565. from childhood

  566. to adulthood,

  567. you literally

  568. put on a new

  569. set of clothes

  570. to show

  571. this new

  572. identification.

  573. new

  574. identification.

  575. And the new

  576. identification

  577. for the Christian,

  578. what do we

  579. clothe ourselves

  580. with?

  581. With Christ

  582. himself.

  583. He's the new

  584. clothes we put on.

  585. Verse 28,

  586. all believers

  587. have a new

  588. identity.

  589. There is neither

  590. Jew nor Gentile,

  591. neither slave nor free,

  592. nor is there male

  593. and female,

  594. for you are all

  595. one in Christ

  596. Jesus.

  597. What is the

  598. badge

  599. that identifies

  600. you,

  601. that identifies

  602. me?

  603. When we introduce

  604. ourselves,

  605. we probably have

  606. a whole list

  607. of characteristics

  608. and other people

  609. will view us

  610. through certain

  611. lenses,

  612. but what Paul

  613. wants to say

  614. in the gospel,

  615. the badge

  616. that identifies

  617. us as a Christian

  618. is,

  619. I am in

  620. Christ.

  621. That's what

  622. comes first.

  623. That's what

  624. should define us.

  625. Now he's not

  626. saying that

  627. all of those

  628. things cease

  629. to exist,

  630. our gender

  631. or our

  632. nationality

  633. or our

  634. social status.

  635. He doesn't

  636. say that we

  637. should all

  638. become exactly

  639. the same.

  640. He's not

  641. saying the

  642. church should

  643. look uniform,

  644. but what he

  645. is saying is

  646. that unity

  647. in Jesus,

  648. that's what

  649. matters.

  650. That's how we

  651. should see each

  652. other.

  653. Not nationality,

  654. not money,

  655. not gender.

  656. Of course,

  657. those things

  658. matter,

  659. but they're

  660. not primary.

  661. And then in

  662. verse 29,

  663. he reminds us

  664. that all

  665. believers have

  666. a new

  667. inheritance.

  668. If you belong

  669. to Christ,

  670. then you're

  671. Abraham's seed

  672. and heirs

  673. according to

  674. the promise.

  675. So he goes

  676. back to

  677. Abraham.

  678. To be in

  679. Christ Jesus,

  680. to have faith

  681. in Jesus,

  682. means we get

  683. all of God's

  684. blessings,

  685. all that he

  686. has promised

  687. in the present,

  688. but also

  689. thinking about

  690. future inheritance,

  691. future glory,

  692. life with God

  693. that lasts forever.

  694. That's true for

  695. all who

  696. will

  697. believe.

  698. And so as

  699. Paul writes

  700. to this church

  701. that's wrestling,

  702. and as we find

  703. ourselves in the

  704. 21st century

  705. in a society

  706. wrestling with

  707. these walls

  708. that divide,

  709. he introduces us

  710. to the power

  711. of the true

  712. gospel

  713. gospel that

  714. can create

  715. a gospel

  716. community

  717. that builds

  718. bridges

  719. and doesn't

  720. build walls.

  721. And so he

  722. paints this

  723. beautiful canvas

  724. of a community

  725. that is free

  726. of pride,

  727. that is free

  728. of prejudice,

  729. that is free

  730. of hostility

  731. and hate.

  732. He calls them

  733. back to the

  734. gospel so that

  735. the church

  736. would be a place

  737. where anyone

  738. can find members,

  739. where anyone

  740. can find a

  741. welcome and

  742. hospitality,

  743. where acceptance

  744. and grace

  745. is given

  746. and received.

  747. That's what the

  748. gospel can do.

  749. It's only what

  750. the gospel can do.

  751. Doesn't that sound

  752. good?

  753. Doesn't that sound

  754. like a good vision

  755. from God for a

  756. local church,

  757. for a church like

  758. ours?

  759. Doesn't that sound

  760. like a good place

  761. to invite people

  762. into, people who

  763. are hurting, people

  764. who are lonely,

  765. people who need

  766. hope?

  767. Now, of course,

  768. we need to be

  769. honest.

  770. Christianity has

  771. not always practiced

  772. what it should

  773. preach.

  774. Of course, you

  775. can look at

  776. church history

  777. and you can look

  778. in our own day

  779. and we recognize

  780. Christians and

  781. churches have

  782. been guilty of

  783. ugly racism

  784. and prejudice

  785. and we have to

  786. own that.

  787. But it is also

  788. true that

  789. Christians have

  790. been responsible

  791. for wonderful

  792. acts that have

  793. brought unity,

  794. that have

  795. brought love,

  796. that has

  797. brought separate

  798. people together.

  799. That the message

  800. of the gospel

  801. does have the

  802. power to do

  803. that.

  804. And that the

  805. gospel does

  806. present for us

  807. this wonderful

  808. vision of a

  809. community of

  810. faith that is

  811. set free from

  812. the usual

  813. prejudices that

  814. we meet in

  815. society.

  816. community.

  817. So how can we

  818. make progress?

  819. How can we look

  820. to present this

  821. light to one

  822. another and to

  823. the world?

  824. Well, Paul would

  825. say to us, we

  826. must begin by

  827. believing the

  828. gospel.

  829. It all begins

  830. with faith in the

  831. Lord Jesus.

  832. Jesus, the

  833. eternal Son of

  834. God, who came on

  835. God's great

  836. redemption mission,

  837. who came to

  838. reconcile people to

  839. God and to one

  840. another.

  841. It all begins

  842. with trusting in

  843. Jesus, this one

  844. who came from

  845. God, the Son of

  846. God, who gave up

  847. his freedom, gladly,

  848. willingly, in love

  849. to save us.

  850. He was betrayed.

  851. He was beaten.

  852. He was arrested.

  853. He was crucified

  854. as the way to

  855. break our chains

  856. of sin that lead

  857. to death.

  858. As the way to

  859. grant forgiveness

  860. from God, to give

  861. us peace with God

  862. that we can

  863. experience the

  864. freedom of God's

  865. grace to know

  866. God's love poured

  867. out in our hearts

  868. so that we can

  869. share that with

  870. others.

  871. So it begins

  872. with Jesus.

  873. And then, but we

  874. live out the

  875. gospel by faith

  876. in Jesus.

  877. With his help, we

  878. welcome strangers

  879. just as God

  880. through Christ

  881. has welcomed us

  882. when we were

  883. strangers and

  884. enemies to him.

  885. we practice

  886. hospitality, knowing

  887. that God welcomes

  888. us every day to

  889. feast on his

  890. goodness and

  891. mercy.

  892. We show patience

  893. to one another

  894. because God

  895. every day is

  896. showing patience

  897. to us.

  898. We grant

  899. forgiveness as

  900. those who have

  901. known and

  902. continually know

  903. that God

  904. graciously forgives

  905. us.

  906. And we love

  907. sacrificially as

  908. we remember

  909. what Jesus, the

  910. Son of God, did

  911. for us on the

  912. cross at

  913. Calvary.

  914. Freedom in

  915. Christ means we

  916. are not slaves to

  917. those lines that

  918. divide.

  919. Now imagine what

  920. kind of community

  921. the gospel of

  922. freedom in

  923. Christ is able

  924. to produce.

  925. Think about why

  926. our world needs

  927. this, why we

  928. need this, why

  929. we need to stay

  930. close to the

  931. gospel.

  932. Because you and

  933. I need grace.

  934. And the gospel

  935. produces a community

  936. where people are

  937. shown grace.

  938. Because our

  939. acceptance is not

  940. based on our

  941. performance.

  942. It would be a

  943. community that

  944. would focus on

  945. what unites us,

  946. what would draw us

  947. together.

  948. together.

  949. We belong to

  950. the Lord Jesus.

  951. Not what divides

  952. us culturally,

  953. socially,

  954. politically.

  955. Faith in Jesus

  956. comes first.

  957. The gospel would

  958. produce that kind

  959. of community where

  960. anyone can belong.

  961. Anyone could walk

  962. through these doors

  963. and they should

  964. find a welcome

  965. that comes from

  966. God himself to

  967. discover God's

  968. love in us,

  969. in our words,

  970. and in our

  971. practice.

  972. this is the

  973. way.

  974. This is the

  975. way of Jesus.

  976. This is the

  977. freedom that

  978. Jesus calls us

  979. into.

  980. And this is the

  981. gospel that Paul

  982. writes to defend.

  983. And it's the

  984. gospel that the

  985. Lord Jesus wants

  986. you and I to

  987. pursue in our

  988. own lives and

  989. as a church.

  990. as a church as

  991. as a church as

  992. as a church as

  993. as a church as

  994. as a church as

  995. as a church as

  996. as a church as

  997. as a church as

  998. as a church as

  999. as a church as

  1000. as a church as

  1001. as a church as

  1002. as a church as
