  1. Good morning, church. The scripture for today comes from John chapter 10, verses 22 to 42.

    John 10:22–42

  2. ! Please follow along in your own Bibles. If you don't have a Bible, do grab one around the stage or at the back near the door.

  3. If you're using our church's Bible, the passage is on page 843.

  4. Starting at verse 22, we read,

  5. At that time, the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem.

  6. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon.

  7. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him,

  8. How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

  9. Jesus answered them,

  10. I told you, and you do not believe.

  11. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me,

  12. but you do not believe because you're not among my sheep.

  13. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

  14. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish,

  15. and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  16. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,

  17. and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

  18. I and the Father are one.

  19. The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.

  20. Jesus answered them,

  21. I have shown you many good works from the Father.

  22. For which of them are you going to stone me?

  23. The Jews answered him,

  24. It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you,

  25. but for blasphemy,

  26. because you, being a man, make yourself God.

  27. Jesus answered them,

  28. Is it not written in your law,

  29. I said you are gods?

  30. If he called them gods to whom the word of God came,

  31. and scripture cannot be broken,

  32. do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world,

  33. you are blaspheming because I said,

  34. I am the Son of God?

  35. If I'm not doing the works of my Father,

  36. then do not believe me.

  37. But if I do them,

  38. even though you do not believe me,

  39. believe the works,

  40. that you may know and understand

  41. that the Father is in me,

  42. and I am in the Father.

  43. Again, they sought to arrest him,

  44. but he escaped from their hands.

  45. He went away again across the Jordan

  46. to the place where John had been baptizing at first,

  47. and there he remained.

  48. And many came to him,

  49. and they said,

  50. John did no sign,

  51. but everything that John said about this man was true.

  52. And many believed him in there.

  53. This is the word of God.

  54. Great.

  55. Thank you, Annabelle.

  56. Let's pray together as we come to this passage.

  57. Lord Jesus Christ,

  58. this passage is going to tell us a lot about you.

  59. God,

  60. things that probably many of us have heard many times before.

  61. We need your spirit to write these things on our hearts,

  62. God.

  63. We need you to open the eyes of our hearts

  64. to see these things that Christians have understood

  65. for thousands of years

  66. all across in every corner of the world.

  67. God,

  68. you have revealed yourself,

  69. and we ask you,

  70. reveal yourself to us once again.

  71. God,

  72. for those of us maybe that are not followers of you,

  73. we've never surrendered to you,

  74. reveal yourself to us.

  75. Show yourself to us.

  76. Help us to see you,

  77. that we may believe in you,

  78. and understand who you are.

  79. God,

  80. for those of us that are followers of you,

  81. help us to see you again freshly.

  82. Help us to worship you,

  83. and to adore you.

  84. Lord,

  85. we pray these things in your great and wonderful name.

  86. Amen.

  87. Amen.

  88. I don't know if you've ever received a final notice letter,

  89. final demand letter.

  90. I confess,

  91. I receive these from time to time.

  92. And the reason is,

  93. I generally am someone that,

  94. whenever I get a bill,

  95. I want to pay it straight away.

  96. I hate having unpaid bills.

  97. But now and then,

  98. there's something that I want to question,

  99. or query,

  100. or think,

  101. hang on,

  102. that's higher than I expected,

  103. and I kind of put it aside

  104. to go and question it,

  105. or query it,

  106. or look into it a bit more,

  107. and then I forget about it,

  108. and then I get another letter,

  109. and I think,

  110. oh yeah,

  111. I must follow up,

  112. and then I forget about it.

  113. And then I get a letter like this,

  114. right?

  115. Saying,

  116. final notice,

  117. final demand.

  118. I don't know if that happens to anybody else.

  119. Maybe I'm the only one.

  120. Sometimes,

  121. when we've been spoken to many times,

  122. we need somebody to kind of

  123. get in our face a little bit,

  124. and wake us up,

  125. and say,

  126. okay,

  127. I've been talking,

  128. now you need to respond.

  129. I can't go on talking forever.

  130. What are you going to do?

  131. Are you going to respond,

  132. or are you going to ignore my words,

  133. right?

  134. That happens in life,

  135. but it also happens with Jesus.

  136. Jesus Christ is so gracious,

  137. so kind,

  138. so wonderful,

  139. but he also wants us to respond to his words.

  140. And so sometimes he says,

  141. I've been speaking for many,

  142. many months now.

  143. I've been speaking for a long time.

  144. I want you to respond.

  145. How are you going to respond?

  146. Now,

  147. we're in John's gospel,

  148. and this is the final sermon

  149. that we're going to be looking at

  150. in John's gospel this year.

  151. We'll pick up again in John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  152. next April.

  153. And the reason for that

  154. is because we've come to the end

  155. of a section in John's gospel.

  156. The biblical writers,

  157. when they wrote the books of the Bible,

  158. they wrote them in such a way

  159. in sections and blocks

  160. that we could easily remember

  161. or understand what they were saying.

  162. And one of the reasons for that

  163. is because in the ancient world,

  164. most people couldn't read.

  165. Almost nobody had a Bible.

  166. Even if you could read,

  167. it was way too expensive

  168. to have your own copy of a Bible.

  169. No one would afford a Bible.

  170. And so the way to remember

  171. what are these writers saying

  172. was to write it in a memorable way.

  173. And one of the ways they did that

  174. was they write in blocks or sections.

  175. And you'd know what that section about.

  176. Today,

  177. the end of John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  178. is the end of a section,

  179. a block that John has been writing.

  180. And we know that for two reasons.

  181. One,

  182. John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  183. starts with a death and resurrection.

  184. And the next section,

  185. John chapter 22,

  186. ends with a death and resurrection.

  187. So that's the next section

  188. in John's gospel,

  189. right?

  190. 11 to 21.

  191. But also in chapter 5 to 10

  192. is kind of one section,

  193. one block.

  194. And today we come to the end of that.

  195. And we see that

  196. because chapter 5 and 10

  197. both begin and end

  198. with a man being healed

  199. on the Sabbath day

  200. and then following

  201. by teaching of Jesus

  202. about Jesus

  203. and his relationship

  204. with the Father.

  205. So if you remember

  206. many weeks ago,

  207. Oscar preached

  208. in John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  209. way back in September.

  210. There's a man

  211. who's paralyzed

  212. and he's by the pool

  213. of Bethsaida,

  214. I think it was.

  215. And Jesus heals him

  216. on the Sabbath day

  217. and the religious leaders

  218. freak out

  219. because you're not allowed

  220. to do any work

  221. on the Sabbath day

  222. and apparently healing

  223. somebody's work

  224. and he gets in trouble

  225. and Jesus follows

  226. that miracle

  227. with the teaching

  228. about his relationship

  229. with the Father.

  230. And you remember

  231. a few weeks ago,

  232. John chapter 9,

    John 9 chapter mention

  233. there's a healing.

  234. Jesus heals a man

  235. born blind

  236. by the pool of Siloam

  237. on the Sabbath day

  238. and the religious leaders

  239. freak out

  240. because it's the Sabbath

  241. and you're not allowed

  242. to work on the Sabbath.

  243. And he follows that

  244. with a teaching

  245. about I'm the Good Shepherd

  246. and then a teaching

  247. about his relationship

  248. with the Father.

  249. That's where we're at today.

  250. So chapter 5

  251. and 9 and 10

  252. kind of parallel each other

  253. and in between these two,

  254. if you've been here

  255. the last couple of weeks,

  256. chapter 6, 7, and 8,

  257. Jesus makes all these claims

  258. about himself, right?

  259. He says,

  260. I am the bread of life.

  261. I am the living water.

  262. I am the light of the world.

  263. I am the truth.

  264. I am the Good Shepherd.

  265. But Jesus makes all these

  266. radical claims

  267. about himself.

  268. And as we come today,

  269. what we see

  270. is that these claims

  271. are kind of bookended

  272. with these teachings.

  273. And John today

  274. is coming to the end

  275. of the section.

  276. He's bringing this

  277. to a conclusion.

  278. And he's saying this.

  279. You've heard all these claims

  280. about Jesus.

  281. You've heard what he has

  282. to say about himself.

  283. What do you make about it?

  284. What do you make about it?

  285. What are you going to do?

  286. John's been showing us

  287. about how the people

  288. in Jesus' day respond to him.

  289. And he's writing this

  290. as history,

  291. but he's also got one eye

  292. on us.

  293. And he's saying,

  294. what about you?

  295. How are you going to respond?

  296. This is how they responded.

  297. How are you going to respond?

  298. So does that make sense?

  299. So this is a section.

  300. He's been telling us

  301. all the claims

  302. that Jesus has been making.

  303. And now he's asking us,

  304. what are you going to do

  305. about it?

  306. And he's been saying,

  307. I've been,

  308. Jesus has been talking a lot.

  309. He's been saying

  310. a lot of words.

  311. In some ways,

  312. this is a kind of final notice.

  313. This is,

  314. I want you to hear

  315. my words.

  316. In some ways,

  317. John's gospel,

  318. we've come to the halfway point,

  319. right?

  320. 21 chapters,

  321. we're at the end of chapter 10.

  322. You know,

  323. if you go to the theater

  324. and there's an intermission

  325. and just before the intermission,

  326. someone will leave you

  327. with something hanging,

  328. a question to ponder

  329. or a twist in the story

  330. or something that you go out

  331. at the halfway point thinking,

  332. hmm,

  333. I wonder how that's

  334. going to be resolved.

  335. John is at the halfway point

  336. and he's saying,

  337. you've seen a lot about Jesus.

  338. How are you going to respond?

  339. Now,

  340. the rest is going to be resolved

  341. as we look at the rest of it.

  342. But,

  343. the main idea of this passage

  344. in some ways

  345. mirrors the main idea

  346. of John's gospel.

  347. And if you know

  348. John's gospel,

  349. right at the end,

  350. he tells us why he wrote it.

  351. He said,

  352. I wrote these things

  353. that you may believe

  354. that Jesus is the Christ,

  355. the Son of God,

  356. and by believing,

  357. experience life in His name.

  358. Okay?

  359. And so that's the big idea.

  360. John says,

  361. will you believe,

  362. will you receive

  363. that Jesus is the Christ,

  364. the Son of God?

  365. For only by believing in Him,

  366. will you experience

  367. life in His name?

  368. Okay,

  369. so today we've got two things.

  370. There you guys see it on the screen.

  371. The essence of Jesus' claim

  372. and the response to Jesus' claim.

  373. Okay,

  374. two things for us to think about.

  375. So,

  376. firstly,

  377. let's look at the essence

  378. of Jesus' claim.

  379. So,

  380. Jesus has been using

  381. all these figures of speech

  382. in this Old Testament imagery,

  383. right,

  384. to speak about Himself

  385. and to show who He is.

  386. He says,

  387. I'm the light of the world,

  388. I'm the bread of life,

  389. He's the door,

  390. He's the truth,

  391. etc.

  392. And some people come to Him

  393. and they say,

  394. how long will He keep us

  395. in suspense?

  396. Another translation says,

  397. how long will He keep annoying us?

  398. Okay,

  399. you could translate it that way.

  400. How long will He keep annoying us?

  401. Tell us,

  402. if you are the Christ,

  403. tell us plainly.

  404. In other words,

  405. all these figures of speech

  406. you've been saying,

  407. just tell us,

  408. are you the long-awaited Messiah,

  409. the one that we've been waiting for

  410. for hundreds of years

  411. to restore the fortunes of Israel

  412. and make Israel great again?

  413. And so Jesus says to them,

  414. verse 25,

  415. I have already told you.

  416. I've told you.

  417. That's what all my teaching's been about.

  418. This is what I've been saying to you

  419. all this time,

  420. right?

  421. I'm not just saying it,

  422. but also demonstrating it.

  423. He says,

  424. the works that I do in my Father's name

  425. bear witness,

  426. but you do not believe me.

  427. Jesus says,

  428. I've been telling you who I am,

  429. both my words and my deeds,

  430. right?

  431. I've been proclaiming the gospel

  432. in word and in action.

  433. And of course,

  434. the greatest action is still to come.

  435. The greatest deed

  436. is going to be the empty clothes

  437. on the empty grave

  438. at the end of the gospel,

  439. but that's still to come.

  440. But these people,

  441. he says,

  442. I've been telling you,

  443. but you do not believe.

  444. You do not believe.

  445. Why don't they believe?

  446. Well,

  447. a couple of reasons.

  448. Look what he says in verse 26.

  449. One,

  450. he says,

  451. you do not believe

  452. because you are not amongst my sheep.

  453. My sheep hear my voice.

  454. I know them

  455. and they follow me.

  456. Jesus says,

  457. you don't believe me

  458. because you've been drowning out my voice.

  459. I've been sending you letters.

  460. I've been talking to you.

  461. I've been trying to tell you.

  462. I've been demonstrating word and deed,

  463. but you're drowning out my voice.

  464. You're refusing to listen.

  465. You don't want to hear what I have to say.

  466. Earlier,

  467. when they say,

  468. just tell us plainly,

  469. are you the Christ?

  470. Why do they ask that?

  471. Is it because they want to bow down

  472. and worship him?

  473. No,

  474. of course not.

  475. They want to kill him.

  476. They're looking for proof,

  477. for evidence that he's blaspheming,

  478. that he's saying this outrageous thing,

  479. right?

  480. They're not genuine questions

  481. of genuine seekers.

  482. They're evidence gathering

  483. of prosecutors

  484. and they're trying to find

  485. their evidence

  486. that they can arrest him

  487. and kill him.

  488. But here's the other reason

  489. why they can't receive Jesus.

  490. Because they don't understand

  491. what God's Messiah is all about.

  492. They don't,

  493. for them,

  494. the Messiah is a military Messiah,

  495. a political Messiah,

  496. someone who's going to restore

  497. the fortunes of Israel,

  498. someone who's going to make Israel great again

  499. and destroy all their political

  500. and their military enemies.

  501. John tells us in verse 22

  502. that this happened at the time

  503. of the Feast of the Dedication.

  504. What that was,

  505. was about 170 years before,

  506. the Syrians overran Israel

  507. and Jerusalem

  508. and they plundered the temple,

  509. they took all the money,

  510. they destroyed the temple

  511. and then the leader

  512. of the Syrian army,

  513. his name was Antiochus IV,

  514. he takes a pig,

  515. which if you're Jewish,

  516. a pig is like the most

  517. unclean,

  518. dirty animal there is.

  519. He takes a pig into the temple

  520. and he sacrifices this pig

  521. in the middle of the temple

  522. to desecrate the temple

  523. and kind of destroy it,

  524. right?

  525. And one leader

  526. called Judas Maccabeus

  527. says,

  528. enough of this

  529. and he gathers his army,

  530. his friends

  531. and they go

  532. and they destroy the Syrians

  533. and they drive them out

  534. and they kill them

  535. and they restore the temple

  536. and they clean it

  537. and they rededicate the temple

  538. to the glory of God.

  539. And so every year

  540. in the middle of December

  541. they would have this

  542. Feast of Dedication

  543. and that's what's going on here,

  544. right?

  545. But that's the kind of Messiah

  546. that they want.

  547. They say,

  548. okay,

  549. Judas,

  550. he died,

  551. give us another Judas Maccabeus,

  552. someone who's going to

  553. this time destroy the Romans.

  554. Okay,

  555. the Syrians are done,

  556. they've done,

  557. the Romans,

  558. get rid of the Romans

  559. and kill them

  560. and restore the glory of Israel.

  561. And they're looking for

  562. a Messiah like that,

  563. a political Messiah,

  564. a religious Messiah,

  565. a military Messiah.

  566. But that's exactly

  567. what Jesus

  568. has not come to do

  569. because that's not

  570. who Jesus is.

  571. Who is Jesus?

  572. Well,

  573. look at what he's trying

  574. to say here.

  575. Jesus says,

  576. I'm not just the Messiah

  577. that you want.

  578. I'm nothing less

  579. than God himself.

  580. I am the son of God.

  581. Jesus says,

  582. I'm equal with the father

  583. in divine authority,

  584. nature,

  585. and power.

  586. I've come to accomplish

  587. the will of God,

  588. the father,

  589. son,

  590. and spirit,

  591. which we determined

  592. beforehand in eternity

  593. to save and rescue

  594. for ourselves,

  595. those who will trust in him.

  596. Look at verse 25 to 29

  597. in your Bibles.

  598. Jesus says this,

  599. the works that I do

  600. in my father's name

  601. bear witness about me.

  602. Verse 27,

  603. my sheep hear my voice,

  604. I know them

  605. and they follow me.

  606. I give them eternal life,

  607. they will never perish

  608. and no one will snatch them

  609. out of my hands.

  610. My father,

  611. who has given them to me,

  612. is greater than all

  613. and no one is able

  614. to snatch them

  615. out of his hands.

  616. Why?

  617. Why does Jesus say,

  618. what I do

  619. is what the father does.

  620. Why?

  621. Because I and the father

  622. are one.

  623. And that's what Jesus is saying.

  624. He's saying,

  625. I'm not here just to

  626. make your lives great again.

  627. I'm not here to make

  628. your nation great again.

  629. I'm here as God himself.

  630. I'm here to save you

  631. from a far bigger enemy

  632. than the Romans.

  633. I'm here to save you

  634. from your sins.

  635. And that's clearly

  636. the big idea here

  637. because nine times

  638. Jesus uses this phrase,

  639. my father or the father.

  640. Everything is,

  641. he says,

  642. my will is the father's will.

  643. My work is the father's work.

  644. What I do

  645. is what the father does.

  646. What the father says

  647. is what I say.

  648. Verse 38,

  649. the father is in me

  650. and I'm in the father.

  651. Why?

  652. I and the father are one.

  653. Now,

  654. the people that Jesus

  655. is speaking to,

  656. they,

  657. on one hand,

  658. they understand

  659. exactly what he's saying,

  660. right?

  661. Because look at how

  662. they respond.

  663. Verse 31,

  664. the Jews picked up stones

  665. to stone him,

  666. right?

  667. They know exactly

  668. what he's saying.

  669. Verse 33,

  670. I think it is,

  671. says,

  672. Jesus says,

  673. why are you stoning me?

  674. Why do you do this?

  675. And he says,

  676. it's not for good works

  677. that we're going to stone you,

  678. but for blasphemy

  679. because you're making yourself

  680. out to be God.

  681. They know exactly

  682. what Jesus is saying.

  683. In chapter 5,

  684. Oscar preached a few weeks ago,

  685. says the same thing.

  686. Verse 18,

  687. this is why the Jews

  688. were seeking to kill him

  689. because he was calling

  690. God his own father,

  691. making himself equal to God.

  692. They know exactly

  693. what Jesus is doing.

  694. They understand

  695. that Jesus is claiming

  696. to be nothing less

  697. than the uncreated

  698. eternal God,

  699. one in nature,

  700. power,

  701. and authority

  702. with God

  703. who's considered

  704. so holy

  705. that to utter his name

  706. in those days,

  707. to say the name Yahweh

  708. on your lips

  709. was a capital offense

  710. punishable by death.

  711. That's how holy God is

  712. and they know

  713. that Jesus is claiming

  714. he and I are one.

  715. But on the other hand,

  716. they actually

  717. don't know

  718. what Jesus is saying at all.

  719. They completely misunderstand

  720. because look at what happens here.

  721. Jesus says,

  722. I've shown you many good works

  723. in the Father.

  724. For which of them

  725. are you going to stone me?

  726. And the Jews answer him

  727. saying,

  728. it's not for good works

  729. we're going to stone you,

  730. but for blasphemy

  731. because being a man,

  732. you make yourself God,

  733. which is exactly

  734. not what Jesus is doing.

  735. Jesus is not a man

  736. who's making himself

  737. out to be God.

  738. Jesus is God

  739. who's become man.

  740. Jesus is the uncreated one,

  741. the God of all creation,

  742. who's become man,

  743. who took on humanity,

  744. who made himself

  745. a servant.

  746. Why?

  747. To go to the cross

  748. and lay down his life

  749. for you and for me.

  750. Friends,

  751. what they find

  752. so blasphemous

  753. and offensive,

  754. Jesus claiming to be God

  755. is actually

  756. such good news for us

  757. that God himself

  758. became man,

  759. took on humanity,

  760. took on flesh and blood,

  761. took on the nature

  762. of a servant,

  763. humbled himself

  764. to the point of death,

  765. death on the cross

  766. in order to rescue us

  767. and save us

  768. from our sins.

  769. And so again,

  770. Jesus' words

  771. in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  772. Jesus said this,

  773. he says,

  774. truly I say to you,

  775. whoever hears my words

  776. and believes him

  777. who sent me

  778. has eternal life.

  779. He does not come

  780. to judgment,

  781. he's passed

  782. from death to life.

  783. That's what Jesus is saying.

  784. Why?

  785. Because he's not just

  786. a messiah,

  787. a political messiah,

  788. he's not just

  789. a military leader,

  790. he is God himself.

  791. I and my father

  792. are one.

  793. I don't know

  794. if you know

  795. the New City Catechism.

  796. Catechism is a way

  797. that churches

  798. throughout the ages

  799. have taught theology

  800. and doctrine

  801. through question and answer.

  802. And so the most famous one

  803. is the Westminster Catechism.

  804. Question one says,

  805. what is the chief end of man?

  806. Answer,

  807. to glorify God

  808. and enjoy him forever.

  809. New City Catechism

  810. question two says this,

  811. what is God?

  812. And the answer is this,

  813. God is the creator

  814. and sustainer

  815. of everyone

  816. and everything.

  817. He is eternal,

  818. infinite,

  819. and unchangeable

  820. in his power

  821. and perfection,

  822. goodness and glory,

  823. wisdom,

  824. justice,

  825. and truth.

  826. Nothing happens

  827. except through him

  828. and by his will.

  829. This is who God is.

  830. And the Jews

  831. would have said,

  832. yes,

  833. that's God,

  834. God the Father,

  835. no problem.

  836. Jesus says,

  837. that's me as well.

  838. And when they hear

  839. what he's saying,

  840. they pick up stones

  841. to kill him.

  842. Just this week,

  843. I've been reading

  844. the book of Revelation

  845. in my devotions,

  846. my quiet times,

  847. and I got to

  848. Revelation 4 and 5,

  849. which is the apostle John

  850. who writes,

  851. and in that,

  852. John has a revelation

  853. of heaven,

  854. and he sees

  855. in his revelation

  856. God on the throne,

  857. and around the throne

  858. are these incredible

  859. creatures,

  860. these amazing creatures

  861. and angels,

  862. and they are worshiping

  863. God the Father on the throne.

  864. This is what they say,

  865. worthy are you,

  866. our Lord and God,

  867. to receive glory

  868. and honor and power,

  869. for you created all things

  870. and by your will

  871. they existed.

  872. But then,

  873. after that,

  874. all these creatures

  875. worship Jesus,

  876. and this is what they say

  877. about Jesus.

  878. They say,

  879. next slide,

  880. I'll tell you,

  881. worthy is the Lamb

  882. who was slain,

  883. to receive power

  884. and wealth

  885. and wisdom

  886. and might

  887. and honor

  888. and glory

  889. and blessing.

  890. And then,

  891. after that,

  892. all creation,

  893. the whole of creation,

  894. angels and creatures

  895. and people,

  896. everything,

  897. worship God

  898. and Jesus together,

  899. saying,

  900. to him who sits

  901. on the throne

  902. and to Jesus the Lamb,

  903. be blessing

  904. and honor

  905. and glory

  906. and might

  907. forever

  908. and ever

  909. and ever.

  910. Friends,

  911. you see the essence

  912. of Jesus' claims.

  913. Why is Jesus

  914. able to say

  915. the things that he is?

  916. I am the light

  917. of the world.

  918. I am the living water.

  919. I am the bread of life.

  920. Why is Jesus

  921. able to say these things?

  922. Is Jesus very proud

  923. and hubris?

  924. Is Jesus a great leader

  925. that can help us

  926. just get ahead in life?

  927. No,

  928. Jesus wants us to see

  929. he is nothing less

  930. than God himself.

  931. Jesus is not offering himself

  932. as one option

  933. in a buffet

  934. of good things

  935. to have in your life.

  936. One more guide

  937. to help you

  938. get ahead in life.

  939. So some of us,

  940. maybe we've got our

  941. finance guru,

  942. we're going to speak

  943. to him about finances

  944. and we've got

  945. our mental health expert

  946. that helps us

  947. with mental health

  948. and we've got

  949. our career guidance person

  950. that helps us

  951. with our career guidance

  952. and maybe you've got

  953. a health and fitness

  954. person on the side

  955. and then you've got

  956. Jesus who's your

  957. kind of spiritual coach

  958. or your life coach,

  959. right?

  960. Jesus says,

  961. no, no, no,

  962. that's not who I am.

  963. I'm not one

  964. of a buffet

  965. of options of things.

  966. I am the uncreated God

  967. and life is found in me.

  968. And Jesus says

  969. that if you want

  970. to find life,

  971. life to the fullness,

  972. you have to come to me.

  973. You have to accept me

  974. as God,

  975. as king.

  976. So friends,

  977. what about you?

  978. Is that true of you?

  979. What do you make

  980. of Jesus?

  981. Is Jesus just a wise man

  982. that helps you

  983. get through life?

  984. Someone who gives you

  985. good wisdom

  986. and advice?

  987. Jesus says,

  988. that's not who I am.

  989. That's not who I've

  990. come to be.

  991. I've come to be God.

  992. I've come to be king.

  993. I've come to be a savior.

  994. I've come to lay down

  995. my life for you.

  996. As we often quote

  997. C.S. Lewis,

  998. he says,

  999. Christianity,

1000. if false is of no importance,

1001. if true is of infinite importance,

1002. the only thing it cannot be

  1003. is moderately important.

  1004. Jesus' claims

  1005. are not moderately important.

  1006. Jesus' claims

  1007. are either true

  1008. and of infinite importance

  1009. or false

  1010. and of no importance.

1011. He will not allow us

  1012. to consider him

  1013. moderately important.

  1014. Now,

  1015. what are the implications

  1016. of this?

  1017. What does this mean

  1018. for our lives?

  1019. Well,

  1020. there's two things.

  1021. One positive,

  1022. one negative.

  1023. One implication is this.

  1024. If you know

  1025. and trust Jesus,

1026. if you're safe in Jesus,

1027. you are safe in God the Father.

  1028. And that's actually

  1029. one of the points

  1030. that Jesus makes here

  1031. in chapter 10.

  1032. He says,

  1033. to know me

  1034. is to know God.

  1035. He says here,

  1036. sorry,

1037. wrong book of the Bible.

  1038. We're in John, right?

  1039. He says,

  1040. he says here,

1041. I give them eternal life

1042. and they will never perish.

1043. No one will snatch them

  1044. out of my hand.

  1045. My Father,

1046. who has given them to me,

  1047. is greater than all

1048. and no one is able

  1049. to snatch them

1050. out of my Father's hands.

  1051. Jesus gives us

  1052. this incredible assurance

  1053. that though your faith

1054. may go up and down,

1055. though you may be strong

  1056. at times

  1057. and weak in times,

  1058. though at times

1059. you may be full of confidence

  1060. and other times

  1061. you may have questions,

  1062. if you are able

1063. to hold on to Jesus,

  1064. Jesus himself

  1065. and God the Father,

  1066. the uncreated one,

1067. is holding on to you.

  1068. It's unbelievable assurance

  1069. that you don't need

  1070. to know everything,

  1071. how everything works.

1072. You don't need to have

  1073. every question answered.

1074. But if you know Jesus,

1075. if you trust in him,

  1076. if you say,

  1077. I'm going to try

1078. to hold on to him,

  1079. he and the Father

1080. are holding on to you

  1081. and no one

  1082. and nothing

  1083. can let you go.

  1084. As the song

  1085. we sometimes sing,

  1086. when Satan tempts me

  1087. to despair

  1088. and tells me

  1089. of the guilt within,

  1090. up would I look

  1091. and see him there

  1092. who made an end

  1093. to all my sin.

  1094. Friends,

  1095. this week,

  1096. you're going to find

  1097. lots of reasons

  1098. to despair.

  1099. This week,

  1100. you're going to find

  1101. lots of reasons

  1102. to doubt.

  1103. Christ Jesus,

  1104. the one that you're

  1105. holding on to,

1106. is holding on to you

  1107. and more than that,

  1108. God the Father

1109. is holding on to you.

  1110. But here's the second

  1111. implication.

  1112. To reject Jesus

  1113. means to reject

  1114. God himself.

  1115. Jesus says,

  1116. I am the Father,

  1117. are one.

  1118. And there's two ways

  1119. we can do that.

1120. We can do that outright

1121. as the people in Jesus'

  1122. day did that.

  1123. Remember when Jesus

  1124. on trial,

  1125. Pilate says,

  1126. what should I do

  1127. with this man

  1128. called Jesus?

1129. And what do they say?

  1130. Crucify him.

  1131. Get rid of him.

1132. Get this man out of here.

  1133. We want nothing

  1134. to do with him.

1135. And they cast him out.

  1136. Maybe that's you.

  1137. Maybe you feel like,

  1138. I want nothing

1139. to do with this Jesus guy.

  1140. But actually,

  1141. there's another way

1142. that we can do that

1143. and we can far more

  1144. subtly reject Jesus.

  1145. And by doing that,

  1146. we're rejecting God.

  1147. Without even almost

  1148. realizing it.

1149. And that's by not quite

  1150. following Jesus entirely

  1151. in all the areas

  1152. of our lives.

  1153. So we tell ourselves,

  1154. yes,

  1155. I'm a Christian.

  1156. I believe in Jesus.

  1157. I'm just not really

  1158. willing to forgive

  1159. that friend.

  1160. Yes,

  1161. I believe in Jesus.

  1162. I'm just not willing

  1163. to honor Christ

  1164. with my sexuality,

  1165. with my money,

  1166. with my career,

  1167. with my relationships,

  1168. with my time.

1169. And we can shut the door

  1170. on God himself,

  1171. the creator and sustainer

  1172. of everyone and everything.

  1173. The one who is

  1174. eternal,

  1175. infinite,

  1176. and unchangeable

1177. in his goodness and grace,

  1178. power and perfection,

  1179. wisdom,

  1180. justice,

  1181. and truth.

  1182. We shut him out

  1183. of our lives

  1184. and we say,

  1185. God,

  1186. take a step back.

  1187. I won't have you

  1188. because we don't

1189. want to trust Jesus' words.

1190. And so when we reject Jesus,

  1191. we're actually rejecting

1192. the God of all creation

  1193. and cutting him out

  1194. of those areas

  1195. of our lives,

1196. which is a very sad

  1197. thing to do.

  1198. Friends,

  1199. this week,

1200. all of us are going

  1201. to be tempted

  1202. to treat Jesus

  1203. in some area

  1204. of our lives

  1205. as just a man

  1206. trying to make him

  1207. out to be God.

  1208. And when we say

  1209. no to him,

  1210. we say no

  1211. to all the grace

  1212. that God wants

1213. to give us through him.

  1214. Friends,

  1215. it's important

  1216. we take this in,

  1217. that Jesus says,

1218. I am one of the Father.

1219. And when you accept me,

  1220. you get the Father.

  1221. When you reject me,

  1222. you reject the Father.

  1223. Now,

1224. look at what happens here

  1225. in verse 34

  1226. and 37.

  1227. Jesus throws a bit

  1228. of a theological spanner

  1229. in their works.

1230. Do you know that phrase?

  1231. I was thinking about

  1232. that this morning.

  1233. Do you know that,

  1234. to throw a spanner

  1235. in the works?

  1236. Is that a very

1237. South African thing to say?

  1238. No?

  1239. So think about

  1240. if you've got this

  1241. big machinery,

  1242. right?

  1243. These big engines

  1244. and someone throws

1245. a metal spanner in it

1246. is going to mess up

  1247. the whole machinery,

  1248. right?

  1249. Jesus throws

  1250. a theological spanner

  1251. in their thinking here

  1252. because they

  1253. want to kill him,

  1254. right?

  1255. And so Jesus

  1256. says something

  1257. to get them

  1258. scratching their heads

  1259. just to pause

1260. and to kind of like

  1261. to throw them off

  1262. their thinking a bit

1263. because they say to him,

1264. we're going to kill you

  1265. because you're blaspheming

1266. and Jesus quotes Psalm 82.

  1267. He says,

  1268. well,

  1269. in the Psalms,

  1270. you know,

  1271. the Psalmist

  1272. talks about

  1273. all God's people

  1274. being gods.

  1275. So why do you

  1276. criticize me

  1277. when I say

  1278. I'm a son of God?

  1279. And why does Jesus

  1280. do that?

  1281. He's kind of getting

  1282. them just to like

  1283. drop their stones

  1284. for a bit

  1285. and say,

  1286. that's a good question.

  1287. Let's think about that

1288. so that he can escape

  1289. from their hands.

  1290. And the reason is

  1291. because Jesus' time

  1292. has not yet come.

  1293. Jesus is going

  1294. to be crucified

  1295. over Passover weekend

1296. in a few months time,

1297. but it's not Passover yet.

1298. His time has not yet come.

  1299. And Jesus wants

1300. to make one final appeal,

  1301. one more appeal

  1302. to get them

  1303. to trust him.

  1304. Jesus is wanting,

  1305. he's not wanting

  1306. to confuse us.

  1307. He's wanting to help

1308. them to see and believe.

1309. And so look what he says

  1310. in verse 37.

1311. And as I read this,

1312. I want you to listen

  1313. to the tone

  1314. of Jesus' words.

  1315. Listen to Jesus

  1316. almost employing,

  1317. he's begging us,

  1318. he's saying,

  1319. he's employing us

1320. to come and listen to him.

1321. I find these verses amazing.

  1322. his final plea

1323. to them and to us.

  1324. Verse 37.

  1325. If I'm not doing

1326. the works of my Father,

  1327. then don't believe me.

1328. But if I do them,

1329. even if you do not

  1330. believe me,

  1331. believe the works

  1332. that you may know

  1333. and understand

  1334. that the Father

  1335. is in me

1336. and I am in the Father.

  1337. Jesus is saying,

1338. you may not like me,

1339. but I want you to see

1340. that I am the Savior

1341. that God has sent to you.

  1342. You may not like

1343. what I have to say,

1344. but look at my works.

  1345. Don't ignore it.

  1346. Don't walk away

  1347. for one more day.

  1348. You need to see

  1349. who I am

  1350. because only by seeing

  1351. who I am

  1352. can you be saved.

  1353. Jesus is employing them.

  1354. He says,

1355. even if you don't believe me,

  1356. that's fine,

  1357. but please,

  1358. look at the evidence.

  1359. Believe the works

  1360. that you may know

  1361. and understand.

1362. The Father is in me

1363. and I am in the Father.

1364. And if you walk away

1365. from me and reject me,

  1366. you're walking away

  1367. from the Father.

  1368. Friends,

  1369. you hear the tenderness

  1370. of his appeal?

  1371. It's almost like

  1372. Jesus begging them

  1373. not to walk away

  1374. from what he's offering

  1375. them one last time.

1376. In just a couple of months' time,

  1377. Jesus will come back

  1378. to Jerusalem,

  1379. but this time

1380. to die on a cross.

  1381. He wants them

  1382. to believe in him

  1383. before that happens

  1384. that they may receive

1385. the life that he offers.

  1386. So,

  1387. how should we respond?

  1388. Well,

1389. John is a master writer

  1390. of his gospel

  1391. and John wants us

1392. to see how they respond

  1393. because he wants us

  1394. to respond appropriately.

  1395. And so,

  1396. John gives us

  1397. two responses.

  1398. In verses 31 and 39,

  1399. he shows us

  1400. how the Jews

  1401. in Jerusalem respond.

1402. And how do they respond?

  1403. Verse 31,

  1404. they pick up stones

  1405. to kill him.

  1406. In verse 39,

  1407. not killing him,

1408. they seek to arrest him.

1409. They want to get rid of him.

  1410. But then,

  1411. John gives us

  1412. an alternative.

  1413. And John shows us

  1414. there's another way

  1415. to respond.

  1416. There's two responses.

  1417. You can reject him

1418. or you can receive him.

  1419. And so,

  1420. look what happens

  1421. in verse 40 to 42.

  1422. Verse 40,

  1423. Jesus went away again

  1424. across the Jordan

  1425. to the place

  1426. where John

  1427. had been baptizing

  1428. at first

  1429. and there he remained.

  1430. So,

  1431. John the author

  1432. takes us back

  1433. to John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

1434. back to John the Baptist,

  1435. right?

  1436. I know it's confusing,

  1437. two different Johns.

1438. And what is John's witness

  1439. about him?

  1440. John the Baptist.

1441. Remember what John the Baptist says?

  1442. He says,

  1443. there is a man

  1444. coming after me

  1445. whose sandals

  1446. I'm not worthy

  1447. to untie.

  1448. A man who ranks

  1449. before me

  1450. because he has always

  1451. existed before me.

  1452. And so,

  1453. John's taking us back

1454. to John the Baptist's testimony

  1455. and he's telling us

  1456. about John the Baptist

1457. and what John the Baptist said.

  1458. And then he says,

  1459. many came to him

  1460. and they said,

  1461. John did no sign,

1462. but everything that John said

1463. about this man is true.

1464. And many believed in him.

  1465. John the Baptist

  1466. did no signs,

  1467. no wonders,

  1468. no miracles.

  1469. He just told them

  1470. about Jesus.

  1471. He told them

1472. that he was the Christ.

  1473. He told them

1474. that he was the son of God.

  1475. He told them

1476. that he was the lamb of God

  1477. who would die

1478. for the sins of the world.

  1479. And that Jesus

  1480. would baptize them

  1481. in the spirit

  1482. and bring them

  1483. into God's kingdom.

  1484. And now,

  1485. having seen Jesus,

  1486. they believe.

  1487. They believe.

  1488. And they experience

  1489. life in his name.

  1490. But others,

  1491. in Jerusalem,

  1492. they see Jesus

1493. and they saw the miracles

1494. and they saw the signs

  1495. and wonders

  1496. and they saw everything

  1497. that Jesus did

  1498. and still,

  1499. they would not believe.

  1500. Do you remember

1501. what the Apostle John said

  1502. right at the beginning?

  1503. He said,

1504. Jesus came to his own

1505. and his own did not receive him.

1506. But to all who did receive him,

1507. who believed in his name,

  1508. he gave the right

1509. to become children of God.

1510. And at the end of the section,

  1511. these two bookends

  1512. of chapter 5 to chapter 10,

1513. John ends with this question.

1514. Which one are you going to be?

1515. Are you going to be

  1516. the Jews in Jerusalem

  1517. that reject him?

1518. Or are you going to be

  1519. like those that believe?

  1520. And that makes

  1521. all the difference.

1522. That makes all the difference.

  1523. John closes off

  1524. this first half

1525. of his biography of Jesus,

  1526. giving us multiple instances

  1527. of religious leaders

  1528. who refuse to believe

  1529. and now points us

  1530. to people that are

1531. on the outskirts of Israel,

  1532. the backwaters of Israel.

  1533. And he says,

  1534. they believed.

1535. Will you be like them?

  1536. So friends,

1537. as we come to a conclusion here,

1538. for 18 weeks this year,

  1539. 18 Sundays,

  1540. we've been looking

  1541. at John's gospel.

  1542. And for 18 weeks

  1543. this year,

  1544. we've been listening

  1545. to John's testimony

  1546. about Jesus,

  1547. about who he is,

1548. that he is the Christ,

1549. the son of the living God,

1550. that those who believe in him

1551. will find life in his name.

  1552. We've heard the words,

  1553. we've seen the signs,

1554. we've listened to the miracles,

  1555. we've considered Jesus teaching,

  1556. we've heard John's witness,

1557. we've seen how he fulfills scripture,

  1558. we've seen that Jesus

1559. is one with the father.

1560. And now John ends off asking us,

1561. what are you going to do with this?

  1562. Will you believe

1563. or will you reject him

1564. like the people of his day?

  1565. These things are written

  1566. that you may believe

1567. that Jesus is the Christ,

1568. the son of the living God,

  1569. and by believing

1570. receive life in his name.

  1571. Friends,

  1572. Jesus sends us

  1573. that final letter.

1574. Don't keep on ignoring it.

  1575. Don't keep on rejecting.

  1576. Respond

1577. and let him help you

1578. find life in his name.

  1579. Let's pray together.

  1580. Lord Jesus,

  1581. sometimes,

  1582. God,

  1583. we confess

1584. our hearts can be very hard.

  1585. We can be dull

  1586. and slow to listen,

  1587. slow to hear.

  1588. But God,

  1589. you're so gracious,

  1590. you're so patient.

  1591. Jesus,

  1592. even these people

1593. that they want to stone you

  1594. and kill you

1595. and be done with you,

  1596. you are so patient

  1597. that you keep on

  1598. employing them

1599. and you come back to them

  1600. another time

  1601. and you say,

  1602. even if you don't

1603. like what I have to say,

  1604. believe my works

1605. that you may receive life.

  1606. Jesus,

1607. help us to believe your works.

  1608. Help us to believe,

  1609. Lord,

  1610. the death and resurrection.

  1611. Help us to believe

  1612. the empty tomb

1613. and help us to find life

  1614. in your name.

  1615. God,

1616. in you there is life

  1617. and apart from you

  1618. there is no life.

  1619. So help us,

  1620. we pray.

  1621. In your wonderful name,

  1622. Amen.

  1623. Amen.

  1624. Amen.
