  1. So, again, if you have your Bibles, you can open them, first of all, to Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  2. As we conclude this little series in the book of Galatians, looking at some of its big themes, we're thinking about the reality that the good news of the gospel, it's a message that changes us.

  3. Now, before we get to thinking about how the gospel changes us, just to think about the importance of finding love and acceptance.

  4. So, this week, lots of our teens and kids in primary school have been applying for camp.

  5. And for those of us who perhaps have been to camps, or you've watched people go away to camp, for many people it becomes a moment when perhaps being kind of isolated in a small church perhaps, they go to a camp and here's the moment where they find their people.

  6. Do you know that moment that I'm talking about?

  7. When a person perhaps feels kind of anxious, they kind of feel like they're all alone in the world, and nobody else really understands them or perhaps their faith.

  8. And then all of a sudden you find some other people, and they think the same, and they accept you.

  9. And now, your life is different.

  10. Maybe I've seen that in the teenagers in your own life.

  11. You can think about it.

  12. There's a happiness, there's a confidence that comes from finding your crew, or when a guy or a girl finds the one.

  13. The same thing happens.

  14. Something changes, and everybody else can see it.

  15. To find love and acceptance in this world is huge.

  16. I was thinking about all those studies that tell us that, you know, kids from stable homes are much more likely to flourish,

  17. and much more likely to be resilient, and so on and so forth.

  18. And thinking about the fact, if that's true in our human experiences with another person,

  19. how much more true is it when that comes to our God?

  20. And this is where Paul kind of takes us in the book of Galatians,

  21. that knowing the love and acceptance of God, that changes us profoundly.

  22. And that's the good news that Paul closes his letter with.

  23. And in a sense, it takes us to the question of what is the greatest privilege in the Christian life?

  24. What is the greatest thing that God could give us?

  25. Now, if you've been around for the last couple of weeks, we've been in the book of Galatians,

  26. we might instinctively think, well, the answer must be justification.

  27. And of course, that is a wonderful truth.

  28. The forgiveness of sin, acceptance from God, that's massive, and it's fundamental.

  29. But actually, that's just a gospel foundation that we must build on.

  30. But it must be our foundation, because if we don't know what it is to be justified,

  31. to be declared right with God, then we can never find true peace.

  32. There'll always be a sense in which our hearts are restless and will wrestle with guilt.

  33. And so justification is wonderful, but it's only the foundation.

  34. To think about an analogy from house building, you know, you lay a good foundation,

  35. a builder is never going to stop there.

  36. Well, unless resources run out.

  37. A homeowner is not going to celebrate the stage at which the foundation is laid.

  38. Because obviously, there is much more to be built.

  39. There is a home to live in.

  40. That's the point where the champagne gets opened.

  41. And as Paul takes us towards the end of his letter,

  42. he wants to show us that there are still greater privileges.

  43. There is still this gospel house that we need to live in,

  44. where justification is just the foundation.

  45. And he's going to take us especially to the wonderful truth that God adopts us into his family.

  46. So we come to live in God's house as God's children,

  47. as members together of God's family.

  48. And that's the good news that changes us.

  49. Because it changes our relationships in an essential way with God and with one another in the Christian church.

  50. So let's think first of all about how the good news that we find in the gospel,

  51. how does that change our relationship with God?

  52. It's here in chapter 4, first 7 verses.

  53. The story of God's redemption is the story of a spiritual adoption.

  54. That God takes people who are strangers and enemies,

  55. and he makes them not just friends, he makes us his family.

  56. He changes lives for all eternity.

  57. And Paul, in the course of just these few verses,

  58. he takes the Galatians and he takes us on something of that journey.

  59. So he takes them, first of all, to their past.

  60. What was it like before Jesus came?

  61. And look with me, chapter 4, first three verses,

  62. he uses the imagery of being like a slave or being an underage child.

  63. As long as an heir is underage, he's no different from a slave,

  64. although he owns the whole estate.

  65. So Paul is picturing a son in a wealthy Roman family.

  66. Big house, lots of land, lots of property,

  67. but as yet they're under 16.

  68. So they're in minority.

  69. So they've got the promise of a great inheritance,

  70. there's great wealth to come, but not yet.

  71. And so this child, though he is the heir,

  72. he still has to live under a tutor and a guardian.

  73. He is not yet ready to enjoy all the privileges that are coming,

  74. the freedom that will be his one day.

  75. And Paul says, well, that's really like life

  76. under the law before Jesus came.

  77. It was a time of waiting and longing for the Messiah

  78. through whom all these promises would come

  79. and the freedom of the gospel would come.

  80. And in the context of the book of Galatians,

  81. remember he's been saying to them,

  82. why would you ever choose law-keeping

  83. as a way to be right with God?

  84. It's as if he's saying it'd be like going back

  85. from being a son to being a slave.

  86. So there's this period in the past of slavery,

  87. but then in verse four, in God's story of adoption,

  88. what happens?

  89. The set time fully comes.

  90. When the set time had fully come,

  91. God sent his son, born of a woman,

  92. born under the law, to redeem those under the law.

  93. What a wonderful phrase, at the set time.

  94. At just the right time, God's timing is perfect.

  95. And in God's perfect timing, he sent his son, Jesus,

  96. so that you and I might become sons of God.

  97. It's the right time in the sense,

  98. when you look at what's happening in history

  99. when Jesus arrives, it's a time of spiritual longing.

  100. I think we see that whenever we read the gospels,

  101. there's that great longing for the Messiah.

  102. They're looking for anyone.

  103. John the Baptist, are you the Messiah?

  104. When excitement about Jesus builds,

  105. they want to make him king by force.

  106. It's a time of spiritual longing for the Jews,

  107. but it's also a time of spiritual longing for the Romans.

  108. The Romans were becoming increasingly uneasy

  109. about their gods and immorality within their culture.

  110. And a lot of people within Roman society

  111. were beginning to look for a new form of truth.

  112. We could also say it's the right time,

  113. because we think about the time when Jesus came.

  114. It was a moment where culture was being shared.

  115. So, Greco-Roman culture was the thing.

  116. And that was so helpful,

  117. because then everybody had a shared language,

  118. the Greek language,

  119. so that when the good news of Jesus was announced,

  120. that message could very quickly spread through the world.

  121. A missionary wouldn't have to go to language school for years

  122. to learn a new language to tell people about Jesus.

  123. They could simply go and speak the Greek

  124. that everybody else in the Roman world understood.

  125. And this timing of God sending Jesus

  126. at just the set time when he arrived,

  127. it was a great political moment for a Messiah to come,

  128. because while you had the wealth of Rome

  129. and the power of Rome,

  130. they also had that desire to maintain security and authority,

  131. which meant that they were building lots of roads.

  132. So, if there was trouble in a far corner of the empire,

  133. they could quickly send an army to quell a rebellion.

  134. But that meant that people could go from Jerusalem

  135. and spread to the far corners

  136. with this good news of the Lord Jesus.

  137. And nothing happens by accident.

  138. This is God's good timing.

  139. And so, at the set time, Jesus comes.

  140. So, the timing is perfect, but also,

  141. Jesus is perfect.

  142. His qualifications are perfect to be our Savior.

  143. What does he say of Jesus?

  144. He is the Son of God.

  145. He is completely divine.

  146. He is totally God.

  147. But he's also born of a woman,

  148. so he's totally man.

  149. And this is what makes Jesus uniquely qualified

  150. to be our perfect mediator.

  151. The one who can represent God to man and man to God.

  152. He is the one and the only one

  153. who can stand in the place of unrighteous sinners like us.

  154. Remember, we can't by ourselves be good enough for God.

  155. But Jesus is perfectly righteous,

  156. and he stands in our place.

  157. And more than that,

  158. he is the only one,

  159. because he is fully God,

  160. is able to absorb God's holy anger

  161. and secure deliverance

  162. and be vindicated at the end of the day.

  163. And we see that at his resurrection.

  164. He came born under the law,

  165. and he would perfectly keep the law.

  166. He would be totally righteous at every point in his life

  167. so that he could redeem those who are under the law.

  168. And here we see Jesus' total commitment

  169. to God's plan of salvation.

  170. Jesus knew all through his life

  171. that he would redeem by his sacrificial death.

  172. And so nothing is held back

  173. in God's plan of salvation.

  174. And that matters so much

  175. when we think about what comes next

  176. in this storyline of God's adoption story.

  177. Look at verses five to seven.

  178. Jesus came to redeem those under the law

  179. that we might receive adoption to sonship.

  180. So there's a movement from slavery to sonship.

  181. Because you are his sons,

  182. God sent the spirit of his son into our hearts,

  183. the spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.

  184. So you're no longer a slave, but God's child.

  185. And since you are his child,

  186. God has made you also an heir.

  187. This is the great privilege of the gospel.

  188. Adoption.

  189. This is moving from the wonderful reality

  190. of God the judge declaring of us in Christ Jesus,

  191. you are not condemned.

  192. That's wonderful.

  193. This is God the Father now saying to us,

  194. come home with me.

  195. That's a greater privilege.

  196. There is a new level of relationship

  197. we are being invited into.

  198. So J.I. Packer says,

  199. adoption is the greatest privilege

  200. the gospel offers,

  201. even higher than justification.

  202. Now just to pause for a moment,

  203. perhaps we recognize in verse five

  204. that Paul uses the language of sonship.

  205. Now why does he deliberately choose sonship?

  206. Why doesn't he call us sons and daughters there?

  207. Why doesn't he talk about children there?

  208. It's because this is a very particular,

  209. specific legal idea.

  210. Because only sons,

  211. only males could inherit.

  212. But what Paul is at pains to point out

  213. is that any and all Christians

  214. are given the right to inherit.

  215. That whoever we are,

  216. Jew, Greek, male, female, slave, or free,

  217. all of us in Christ

  218. have the right to be called children of God,

  219. to be sons of God

  220. in the sense of inheriting

  221. all his wonderful promises.

  222. The right to have God as our eternal father,

  223. that belongs to all of us.

  224. The prospect of an eternal home,

  225. that belongs to any who have faith in Jesus.

  226. The reality of belonging to an eternal family,

  227. that's for all who are united to Christ Jesus by faith.

  228. And this wonderful privilege of adoption,

  229. notice in verse six,

  230. brings with it the gift of the Spirit.

  231. God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts.

  232. We remember Jesus being baptized in the Spirit,

  233. the Spirit-filled man,

  234. that same Spirit that filled Jesus now fills us.

  235. God comes to dwell in our hearts.

  236. We have this unique privilege

  237. since the coming of Jesus

  238. and the sending of the Spirit

  239. of God drawing near in a whole new way.

  240. In the Old Testament,

  241. Jewish worshipers,

  242. Gentile worshipers,

  243. had various levels of being removed from God.

  244. If God dwelt in the Holy of Holies

  245. and we're Gentiles,

  246. well, we could get to the outer courts.

  247. If you're a Jewish woman,

  248. you could get a little bit further.

  249. A Jewish man could get a little bit further.

  250. The high priest,

  251. well, they could enter into the holy place,

  252. but nobody could enter the holy of holies

  253. except the high priest

  254. and only one time a year

  255. and then a very real worry

  256. that he might lose his life

  257. by making some mistake

  258. in the presence of the holy God.

  259. But now in Christ Jesus,

  260. we're brought right into the holy of holies.

  261. Whenever we pray,

  262. immediately we are in the presence

  263. of our God and our Father.

  264. We have wonderful privilege

  265. because of our sonship

  266. to pray our Father in heaven.

  267. As I was reading this week,

  268. I was reading an author

  269. and a preacher

  270. by the name of David Platt.

  271. Some of you may be familiar with him.

  272. He also started a movement

  273. called the Radical Movement.

  274. It's a really interesting website.

  275. Encourages mission to the unreached.

  276. There's lots of interesting videos

  277. about, for example,

  278. gospel work in Japan.

  279. There's a whole series on that.

  280. But David Platt was so helpful

  281. to read because over the course of his life,

  282. he and his wife have adopted two children,

  283. one from China and one from Kazakhstan.

  284. And he tells the story

  285. of this little adopted boy

  286. from Kazakhstan being in that stage

  287. which all children go through

  288. of asking multiple why questions.

  289. So we remember those.

  290. If we're parents,

  291. we remember the why stage.

  292. And so he tells this wonderful

  293. little conversation.

  294. So David Platt begins

  295. talking to his little son.

  296. Simply wanted to say to him,

  297. I love you.

  298. Why?

  299. Because you're my son.

  300. Why?

  301. And he thought about that

  302. for a few seconds.

  303. And his answer was wonderful.

  304. Because we wanted you.

  305. And we came to get you.

  306. And that's why you're my son.

  307. And it's a wonderful message

  308. because that comes from a pastor

  309. who knows the gospel.

  310. He knows the logic of the gospel,

  311. that God loves us,

  312. that God wanted us,

  313. God in Christ came to get us,

  314. to die for us and rise again,

  315. to make us beloved children

  316. adopted by our Father.

  317. the greatest privilege

  318. that we can have

  319. in our lives.

  320. And J.I. Packer,

  321. in one of his books,

  322. can't remember which book,

  323. he said,

  324. if you want to know

  325. how well somebody

  326. understands Christianity,

  327. ask this question.

  328. Ask yourself this question.

  329. How much do you make

  330. of being God's child?

  331. How much do you make

  332. of being God's child?

  333. Paul tells us

  334. that God has sent the Spirit

  335. so that we can enjoy

  336. the privilege of sonship.

  337. God sent his Son

  338. to make us sons of God.

  339. The reality that we can worship

  340. is only because God

  341. has sent his Son

  342. to make us his children.

  343. Our free access

  344. to a throne of grace.

  345. the reality of God's

  346. steadfast fatherly love.

  347. The fact that we can confess

  348. our sin to our Father

  349. and know that he won't turn

  350. his back on us

  351. because he loves us in Christ.

  352. The security that we have

  353. of knowing a Father

  354. who is steadfast

  355. to his promises

  356. and that work of salvation

  357. that he begins in Jesus,

  358. he will complete,

  359. he will take us home

  360. to be with himself.

  361. The freedom that we have

  362. because we're not slaves

  363. to a taskmaster,

  364. we're sons and daughters

  365. of a Father

  366. who loves us deeply.

  367. When we understand

  368. the privilege

  369. of the knowing God as Father,

  370. then we're beginning

  371. to get to the heart

  372. of Christianity.

  373. Christianity.

  374. And that's the good news

  375. that Paul brings

  376. to these Galatian Christians

  377. who are beginning to think,

  378. well, maybe I should

  379. turn back to the law.

  380. Maybe that's going to be

  381. the better way

  382. to be right with God.

  383. And he says,

  384. no, no, remember the gospel

  385. in Christ Jesus

  386. adopted to sonship.

  387. So the good news

  388. changes our relationship

  389. with God,

  390. but he doesn't finish

  391. with that relationship.

  392. Paul also wants

  393. them and us

  394. to know that the good news

  395. changes our relationship

  396. with each other.

  397. And so we heard

  398. from Galatians 5

  399. and Galatians 6.

  400. So perhaps we can turn

  401. there together

  402. as we think about

  403. the fact that

  404. the truths of the gospel,

  405. the wonderful truths

  406. that we've been thinking

  407. about in the book

  408. of Galatians,

  409. they should change us.

  410. Now that we know

  411. that God is our Father,

  412. now that we live

  413. experiencing His love,

  414. that should transform us,

  415. that should show itself

  416. in life in His family,

  417. in the church.

  418. So we heard Paul

  419. talk about freedom

  420. this morning.

  421. In chapter 5

  422. and verse 13,

  423. he's still talking

  424. about a particular

  425. kind of freedom

  426. the Christian enjoys.

  427. You, my brothers and sisters,

  428. were called to be free.

  429. But we need to understand

  430. what kind of freedom.

  431. But do not use your freedom

  432. to indulge the flesh.

  433. So this Christian freedom

  434. is not freedom

  435. to live as I please.

  436. And it's not freedom

  437. to simply live for myself.

  438. It's not, well,

  439. now I've got Jesus,

  440. now I've got a free pass,

  441. so I can just do

  442. whatever I want.

  443. Rather,

  444. our freedom

  445. has a particular form.

  446. Serve one another

  447. humbly in love.

  448. That's the freedom

  449. we have as Christians,

  450. the freedom to be humble.

  451. The freedom to serve

  452. from hearts

  453. that have been transformed

  454. by Jesus serving us.

  455. The freedom to love

  456. one another

  457. because God

  458. has freely loved us.

  459. It's a similar point

  460. that he makes

  461. at the beginning

  462. of chapter 5.

  463. So we read this morning,

  464. chapter 5, verse 1,

  465. it is for freedom

  466. that Christ has set us free.

  467. The end of that

  468. little section

  469. is verse 6.

  470. And look at how he ends

  471. verse 6.

  472. The only thing that counts

  473. is faith

  474. expressing itself

  475. through love.

  476. Our faith in Christ

  477. should show itself

  478. in lives of love

  479. and service.

  480. I love the story

  481. of the Apostle John.

  482. It's told

  483. by some of his followers

  484. when he was really old,

  485. so in his 90s.

  486. Too old really

  487. to say much,

  488. too old to travel

  489. by his own strength.

  490. The story is told

  491. that he would be carried

  492. on the Lord's Day

  493. on a kind of,

  494. I guess,

  495. a stretcher

  496. is probably the easiest way

  497. for us to imagine it.

  498. And he'd be taken

  499. to a house church

  500. and he'd be placed

  501. in front of the congregation,

  502. very little ability

  503. to speak,

  504. but he would say to them,

  505. dear children,

  506. love one another.

  507. That's the one truth.

  508. That Apostle

  509. wanted the church,

  510. those young churches,

  511. to know

  512. that as you've been

  513. loved by God

  514. in Jesus,

  515. love one another.

  516. And the great gospel

  517. truths that we've been

  518. thinking about,

  519. being justified

  520. by faith in Jesus,

  521. being adopted

  522. into God's family,

  523. they're not just

  524. for our heads,

  525. not just doctrines

  526. to admire,

  527. rather they are

  528. to reach our hearts

  529. and change our lives

  530. in a particular way

  531. that it should lead us

  532. into lives of love.

  533. And so just to notice

  534. a couple of different ways

  535. that we see this.

  536. First of all,

  537. thinking about

  538. how the Spirit

  539. wants to work in us,

  540. the character of Christ.

  541. So look at chapter 5,

  542. verse 22 and 23,

  543. that sort of famous,

  544. perhaps familiar section

  545. for many of us,

  546. the fruit of the Spirit.

  547. The fruit of the Spirit

  548. is love,

  549. joy,

  550. peace,

  551. forbearance,

  552. patience,

  553. kindness,

  554. goodness,

  555. faithfulness,

  556. gentleness,

  557. and self-control.

  558. So in this section,

  559. verse 16,

  560. Paul calls believers

  561. to live by the Spirit.

  562. Then in verse 18,

  563. he calls us to be

  564. led by the Spirit.

  565. And when we're living

  566. by the Spirit

  567. and we're led by the Spirit,

  568. that's going to produce

  569. a certain kind of life.

  570. Life is going to take on

  571. a certain shape and form,

  572. and that shape and form

  573. is the fruit of the Spirit,

  574. is more of the character

  575. of the Lord Jesus.

  576. He chooses this image

  577. from the garden

  578. to say that what the Spirit

  579. wants to grow in us

  580. is more and more likeness

  581. to the Lord Jesus.

  582. Because as we think

  583. about these qualities,

  584. as we think about Jesus

  585. in the gospel,

  586. we recognize that He

  587. is the one

  588. and the only one

  589. who perfectly shows us

  590. all of these character qualities.

  591. He is the one

  592. of perfect,

  593. sacrificial love

  594. towards others,

  595. driven by compassion

  596. and care

  597. to heal the sick,

  598. to raise the dead,

  599. to restore

  600. fallen disciples,

  601. and ultimately

  602. to die on the cross

  603. for us.

  604. He is the one

  605. of perfect

  606. kindness

  607. and goodness,

  608. never sending

  609. anyone away,

  610. welcoming the children,

  611. those despised,

  612. those rejected,

  613. those full of shame

  614. are welcomed,

  615. they're honored,

  616. they're shown kindness

  617. and care.

  618. Jesus is the one

  619. who practices

  620. perfect patience

  621. when His disciples

  622. fail to understand,

  623. when they want

  624. to exercise pride

  625. and be full of themselves

  626. rather than serving,

  627. when they abandon Him

  628. at the moment

  629. of His trial,

  630. and as He is arrested,

  631. He patiently restores.

  632. And so we see

  633. these qualities

  634. perfectly in Jesus,

  635. but the Spirit

  636. wants to grow them

  637. in us.

  638. And in a particular way

  639. to transform

  640. how we relate

  641. to one another,

  642. because this is

  643. part of a contrast.

  644. So in verse 19,

  645. there is a description

  646. of the acts

  647. of the flesh.

  648. And as you scan

  649. that list,

  650. you'll see that

  651. those acts

  652. are profoundly

  653. selfish acts.

  654. Sexual immorality,

  655. impurity,

  656. idolatry,

  657. hatred,

  658. discord,

  659. jealousy,

  660. fits of rage,

  661. selfish ambition,

  662. selfish acts.

  663. That's what the flesh

  664. produces.

  665. That's what we

  666. naturally would produce.

  667. But when the Spirit

  668. works in us,

  669. the Spirit of Christ

  670. works in us,

  671. then He's producing

  672. in us a character

  673. that shows

  674. and expresses

  675. love

  676. towards

  677. others.

  678. And it's important

  679. to recognize

  680. that all of these

  681. qualities,

  682. they need a someone

  683. to show them to.

  684. we can only grow

  685. in patience

  686. as we rub up

  687. against other people.

  688. And so this is a picture

  689. of the kind of life

  690. that Paul wants

  691. to see

  692. these Galatian Christians

  693. have and share

  694. together.

  695. That God wants

  696. these qualities

  697. to grow in us

  698. in the context

  699. of our church

  700. family life

  701. together.

  702. Now it's important

  703. to recognize

  704. that we are all

  705. works in progress

  706. that nobody can say

  707. I've reached

  708. perfection.

  709. These processes

  710. that the Spirit

  711. begins in us,

  712. they won't be complete

  713. until we are

  714. with the Lord Jesus

  715. or the Lord Jesus

  716. comes back

  717. and then we are

  718. completely free

  719. from sin.

  720. Then we will have

  721. that perfect character.

  722. But nevertheless

  723. it is true

  724. that when we are

  725. walking with the Spirit

  726. He will bring

  727. change in us

  728. and He'll give us

  729. that desire

  730. to want to change

  731. and to become

  732. more holy.

  733. And so there is

  734. something of the

  735. character of Christ

  736. that is being formed

  737. in church members

  738. that shapes

  739. and changes

  740. our relationship

  741. with one another.

  742. But the second way

  743. in which our

  744. relationship

  745. with one another

  746. changes

  747. that we find

  748. at the beginning

  749. of chapter 6

  750. in that we are

  751. invited to carry

  752. each other's

  753. burdens.

  754. Look at verse 2,

  755. carry each other's

  756. burdens and in this way

  757. you will fulfill

  758. the law of Christ.

  759. This is one of those

  760. New Testament

  761. one another

  762. sections,

  763. you know,

  764. forgive one another,

  765. you know,

  766. show hospitality

  767. to one another.

  768. There are a whole

  769. raft of them

  770. and again

  771. in common

  772. each of them

  773. needs a church

  774. fellowship

  775. to practice

  776. them in.

  777. We cannot

  778. carry each other's

  779. burdens

  780. if we are not

  781. connected enough

  782. to know what

  783. burdens

  784. somebody else.

  785. And so even

  786. as we're thinking

  787. about carrying

  788. each other's

  789. burdens

  790. it's a reminder

  791. that we need

  792. to love

  793. the local church

  794. and to love

  795. our brothers

  796. and sisters

  797. within the church

  798. so that we can

  799. keep these

  800. commands.

  801. what do we

  802. help carry?

  803. Well perhaps

  804. first of all

  805. we can think

  806. about carrying

  807. that burden

  808. of sin

  809. and temptation

  810. because that's

  811. where he begins

  812. in verse 1

  813. brothers and

  814. sisters

  815. if someone

  816. is caught

  817. in a sin

  818. you who live

  819. by the spirit

  820. should restore

  821. that person

  822. gently

  823. but watch

  824. yourselves

  825. or you also

  826. may be tempted.

  827. That's one way

  828. where we can

  829. carry each other's

  830. burdens

  831. when we can

  832. practice

  833. gentle

  834. restoration.

  835. When a family

  836. member falls

  837. into temptation

  838. Paul is saying

  839. to the whole

  840. church

  841. we have a

  842. duty of care

  843. to one another.

  844. That we are

  845. all to function

  846. like shepherds

  847. who are attentive

  848. to see

  849. are there any

  850. sheep wandering

  851. who I know

  852. whom God

  853. would want me

  854. to gently

  855. restore.

  856. That all

  857. of us

  858. in Christ

  859. have a responsibility

  860. to speak

  861. the truth

  862. in love.

  863. This isn't

  864. restricted to

  865. a minister

  866. or to a group

  867. of elders

  868. though we do

  869. have a duty

  870. of care

  871. in that

  872. absolutely.

  873. This is

  874. addressed to

  875. brothers and

  876. sisters within

  877. the church

  878. that part of

  879. our everyday

  880. pastoral care

  881. for one another

  882. is to help

  883. each other

  884. to fight

  885. temptation

  886. and to walk

  887. in obedience.

  888. And that

  889. requires a

  890. certain level

  891. of commitment.

  892. It requires

  893. us to get

  894. close enough

  895. to know

  896. one another

  897. to know

  898. what our

  899. struggles

  900. might be.

  901. It commits

  902. us to stand

  903. together as

  904. brothers in

  905. arms in the

  906. fight of

  907. faith.

  908. It requires

  909. us to be

  910. willing to

  911. share honest

  912. struggles

  913. not with

  914. everyone but

  915. with at least

  916. someone.

  917. it involves

  918. praying for

  919. help for

  920. someone because

  921. we know them

  922. and we know

  923. that they are

  924. struggling.

  925. It involves

  926. being accountable

  927. to others

  928. not isolating

  929. ourselves and

  930. not allowing

  931. sin to isolate

  932. us further.

  933. Remember we

  934. read about

  935. Eve and

  936. Adam what do

  937. they do when

  938. they fall into

  939. sin they try

  940. and hide

  941. they feel a

  942. sense of

  943. shame.

  944. whereas we're

  945. invited rather

  946. to confess

  947. to bring

  948. our sin

  949. into the

  950. light of

  951. the gospel.

  952. And so we

  953. have a

  954. responsibility

  955. to help

  956. to carry

  957. that burden

  958. of sin

  959. and temptation

  960. that we

  961. all have

  962. ongoing

  963. in our

  964. lives.

  965. But secondly

  966. we are to

  967. help carry

  968. the burden

  969. of life's

  970. challenges

  971. together.

  972. to be the

  973. person who

  974. says to

  975. someone else

  976. I will be

  977. there for

  978. you through

  979. thick and

  980. through

  981. thin.

  982. To fulfill

  983. the law of

  984. Christ is to

  985. love one

  986. another.

  987. And to help

  988. us to think

  989. about what

  990. that involves

  991. again we can

  992. go to no

  993. better place

  994. than to go

  995. to the gospel

  996. and to think

  997. about what

  998. did it look

  999. like for

  1000. Jesus to

  1001. love others

  1002. to carry the

  1003. burdens of

  1004. others.

  1005. What do we

  1006. see in Jesus

  1007. that we can

  1008. learn from?

  1009. Well love shows

  1010. up and comes

  1011. near.

  1012. It's the

  1013. incarnation.

  1014. Love is

  1015. willing to

  1016. walk the road

  1017. of pain and

  1018. suffering with

  1019. and for

  1020. others.

  1021. love is the

  1022. whole pattern

  1023. of Jesus

  1024. life.

  1025. Love weeps

  1026. for grieving

  1027. friends.

  1028. Love restores

  1029. the friend

  1030. who fails.

  1031. Love brings

  1032. hope and

  1033. help.

  1034. Love sacrifices

  1035. for the sake

  1036. of others.

  1037. And we know

  1038. that because we

  1039. see Jesus

  1040. doing it.

  1041. And he is

  1042. our saviour

  1043. and he is our

  1044. great example.

  1045. So what does

  1046. God want for

  1047. us as a

  1048. church?

  1049. As we think

  1050. about how

  1051. Paul closes

  1052. off his

  1053. letter.

  1054. He wants us

  1055. to grow

  1056. nearer to

  1057. him as

  1058. father.

  1059. To appreciate

  1060. his fatherly

  1061. love and

  1062. care.

  1063. He wants us

  1064. to love one

  1065. another as

  1066. children of

  1067. God as part

  1068. of the family

  1069. of faith.

  1070. He wants

  1071. us to love

  1072. God by

  1073. loving

  1074. one another

  1075. and in

  1076. so doing

  1077. to show

  1078. that the

  1079. gospel is

  1080. real and

  1081. that the

  1082. gospel is

  1083. powerful.

  1084. God
