  1. Perhaps you could turn with me now to the book of Genesis.

  2. If you're using a church Bible, it's on page 3.

  3. ! We're going to be asking the question this morning,

  4. what does it mean to be made in God's image?

  5. And that takes us to the second part of day 6.

  6. So Genesis chapter 1 and at verse 26,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  7. Then God said,

  8. Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness,

  9. so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,

  10. over the livestock and all the wild animals,

  11. and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  12. So God created mankind in his own image.

  13. In the image of God he created them.

  14. Male and female he created them.

  15. God blessed them and said to them,

  16. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  17. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  18. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky

  19. and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

  20. Then God said,

  21. I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth

  22. and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.

  23. They will be yours for food.

  24. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky

  25. and all the creatures that move along the ground,

  26. everything that has the breath of life in it,

  27. I give every green plant for food.

  28. And it was so.

  29. God saw all that he had made,

  30. and it was very good.

  31. And there was evening,

  32. and there was morning,

  33. the sixth day.

  34. Amen.

  35. This is God's word.

  36. And this takes us to some of the most fundamental teaching

  37. that we're going to find anywhere on what it means to be human.

  38. It touches so many of our biggest questions about life and humanity.

  39. What does it mean to be a human?

  40. Are we, as a lamppost recently told me,

  41. just all sawdust?

  42. It was life random, meaningless,

  43. and that's our best future.

  44. Are we just naked apes,

  45. which some of us grew up hearing?

  46. We have evolved to survive and thrive,

  47. but we're just one among many of the creatures.

  48. Or it's what God says wonderfully true.

  49. Are we image bearers with profound glory and worth

  50. because of that?

  51. What defines our identity as people?

  52. How would you answer that?

  53. It's become something of a modern battleground.

  54. When we think of all the questions

  55. down at the street level,

  56. but also that make their way up

  57. into sort of government legislation,

  58. are we defined by gender and sexuality?

  59. Think about all the tensions around race and ethnicity.

  60. Even questions of,

  61. am I truly human when I have value to society only,

  62. or is there something more?

  63. And over all the confusion,

  64. above all the competing voices,

  65. we come to a text like this.

  66. We come to Genesis 1,

  67. and it gets to the heart of things

  68. because this is God speaking to us.

  69. And he says to each one of us,

  70. you are made by God,

  71. and you are made for God.

  72. As we think about the implications of this,

  73. we understand every person born and unborn

  74. is a little miracle of God,

  75. and that every life truly should matter.

  76. And today, I think in every day,

  77. every generation,

  78. but in this day,

  79. we certainly need to hear the Bible's clear teaching

  80. on the nature and the value of human life.

  81. And so as we come to Genesis 1,

  82. so we're kind of jumping into the second part of day 6,

  83. and the message is remarkable.

  84. If this is something that's new to you,

  85. it might even seem shocking.

  86. If we were to ask God himself,

  87. what is the highlight?

  88. What's the greatest thing in this universe

  89. that you have created?

  90. What's the center of your masterpiece?

  91. God wouldn't point us to the galaxies.

  92. He wouldn't point us to the mountains.

  93. He wouldn't direct our attention to the great beasts.

  94. He would say, you and I,

  95. we are the crown and the pinnacle of God's creation.

  96. And Genesis 1,

  97. and the way the days work themselves out,

  98. is intended to show us just that.

  99. Days 1 to 6 reveal that we have a God,

  100. and he is eternal,

  101. and he is good,

  102. and he makes with order,

  103. and he makes with beauty.

  104. And do you know what else we know?

  105. We know that he makes the world just right

  106. for you and I to live in.

  107. Here is this wonderful environment

  108. for us to live and love and work,

  109. and to enjoy and to worship our God.

  110. And we're clued into the fact

  111. that there is something special and significant

  112. in this second half of day 6

  113. with a series of firsts.

  114. So right into our text,

  115. verse 26,

  116. then God said,

  117. let us make mankind.

  118. This is the first time we discover

  119. that God deliberates.

  120. There is a decision within the Godhead.

  121. This becomes,

  122. as we get to our New Testament,

  123. an early clue that our God is Trinity,

  124. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  125. Another clue that there is something remarkable

  126. going on in verse 28,

  127. God blessed them and said to them,

  128. this is the first time God speaks

  129. to something else that is living

  130. and establishes relationship with them.

  131. And then it's only

  132. once male and female have been created

  133. that God can look at all he has made,

  134. verse 31,

  135. and declare it to be very good.

  136. Now that there are people

  137. who display his image in the world,

  138. now that the masterpiece of creation

  139. is complete,

  140. the artist can stand back

  141. with the deepest sense of joy

  142. and satisfaction.

  143. It's a remarkable text.

  144. Our topic is vital.

  145. We're only going to be able

  146. to scratch the surface,

  147. but what we're going to do

  148. is we're going to think about

  149. what does it mean

  150. to be made in the image of God?

  151. And then really importantly,

  152. to begin to think about

  153. why does it matter?

  154. So three ideas to do with

  155. what does it mean

  156. to be made in the image of God?

  157. The first is this,

  158. we are made to represent God.

  159. Just to hear,

  160. let's hear verse 27 again.

  161. So God created mankind

  162. in his own image

  163. and the image of God he created,

  164. the male and female he created them.

  165. Why use the language of image?

  166. So let's just think really basically,

  167. of the truth,

  168. images are created

  169. to image someone.

  170. Okay, we live in Edinburgh.

  171. Edinburgh is a city full of statues.

  172. You know, you can think of John Knox

  173. or you can think of David Hume

  174. or you can even think of Greyfriars Bobby.

  175. And all of those images

  176. are created to make us think

  177. of the person or indeed the dog

  178. and their qualities.

  179. Genesis 1 is saying

  180. that God has now created

  181. eight billion living statues.

  182. Each one of us designed

  183. to display his glory

  184. so that as we look on one another,

  185. we are thinking

  186. or we are to think of God

  187. and his glory and his rule.

  188. That gets us to the idea

  189. behind image and likeness

  190. that the folks that first wrote

  191. and then heard Genesis 1

  192. were familiar with.

  193. They lived in a day

  194. when kings ruled over vast regions

  195. and what that king would do,

  196. he would set up a number of icons

  197. or statues in his empire

  198. as a way to say,

  199. I am the king

  200. and don't you forget it,

  201. you owe me honour and loyalty.

  202. Back in 1979,

  203. the statue that's up on the screen

  204. was discovered by a farmer in Syria.

  205. It's the Tel Fekiria statue

  206. and what's interesting,

  207. so it's a statue of an Assyrian king

  208. and what's interesting

  209. is that the inscription on the back

  210. in both Assyrian and Aramaic

  211. contains the word for image and likeness.

  212. So this is a familiar idea.

  213. Back in Egypt,

  214. so God's people Israel,

  215. they had been slaves

  216. and in Egypt,

  217. they were used to hearing Pharaoh

  218. talk about himself

  219. as the image of God.

  220. And so when Genesis comes to be written,

  221. it takes this idea

  222. and it makes it true and living

  223. and applies it to God as the king

  224. and us being made in his image.

  225. And that means that you and I,

  226. we are those who are made

  227. to represent God in his world.

  228. It's there in verse 28,

  229. be fruitful, increase in number,

  230. fill the earth, subdue it, rule over.

  231. It's the purpose of that language

  232. of be fruitful and multiply

  233. so that the glory of God

  234. would spread and fill the earth

  235. as his image bearers

  236. would spread and fill the earth.

  237. This language is saying to us

  238. that by God's design,

  239. every single person,

  240. not just a king,

  241. not just the elite,

  242. but every person

  243. would have this royal role

  244. and dignity upon them.

  245. Psalm 8,

  246. humanity is crowned

  247. with glory and with honor

  248. because we are appointed

  249. to represent God

  250. in his world,

  251. to reflect something

  252. of his glory

  253. in this world.

  254. And it's wonderful

  255. that we don't need to

  256. create our own identity.

  257. As we read God's word,

  258. we discover

  259. we have a wonderful

  260. God-given purpose.

  261. each and every day

  262. of our lives

  263. to live for him

  264. and for his glory.

  265. So we're made,

  266. first of all,

  267. to represent God.

  268. Secondly,

  269. we are made for

  270. relationship with God.

  271. So in English,

  272. we have a couple of expressions

  273. that remind us of this.

  274. We say of someone,

  275. you're the spitting image

  276. of your father

  277. or your mother.

  278. Or we talk about someone

  279. being a chip

  280. off the old block.

  281. And so we take

  282. family language,

  283. we take relationship language,

  284. and we say there is image

  285. and likeness there.

  286. And so Genesis 1,

  287. again,

  288. is revealing to us

  289. that in a general sense,

  290. every person

  291. is a child of God

  292. by nature of being

  293. created by God.

  294. Now,

  295. we still need to be saved

  296. through faith in Jesus

  297. to become children of God

  298. through faith,

  299. but all of us

  300. are made,

  301. our original design

  302. is that we would know

  303. and enjoy relationship

  304. with God.

  305. That's one of the greatest

  306. privileges of our life

  307. to discover that.

  308. What kind of relationship

  309. are we invited into?

  310. Well,

  311. first of all,

  312. it's a personal relationship.

  313. So remember back

  314. in verse 26,

  315. there's that,

  316. there's the moment

  317. where God deliberates

  318. and he says,

  319. let us make mankind.

  320. Here is the personal God

  321. creating people

  322. in his image

  323. for personal relationship.

  324. We are created

  325. in a unique way

  326. for a unique relationship.

  327. Just to remind ourselves

  328. that that says to us,

  329. God isn't a distant God.

  330. God isn't unconcerned with us.

  331. We're not just here

  332. randomly and by chance.

  333. We have this,

  334. we're made for a personal

  335. relationship with God.

  336. Secondly,

  337. we're made for a covenant

  338. relationship with God.

  339. I don't know if you noticed

  340. that covenant language

  341. is right here

  342. in verse 28

  343. because we're told

  344. God blessed them.

  345. That's covenant language.

  346. God blessed

  347. Adam and Eve,

  348. the first people.

  349. Humanity was designed

  350. by God to flourish,

  351. to enjoy representing God

  352. on the earth

  353. and to enjoy life

  354. with God.

  355. We weren't made

  356. as slaves.

  357. Life under God

  358. is not drudgery.

  359. This is the way

  360. to freedom

  361. and joy

  362. in life

  363. to know

  364. our God.

  365. And the creation story

  366. does this for us.

  367. It reveals,

  368. and we'll see this

  369. in future weeks,

  370. that we are made

  371. for relationships.

  372. We're made for relationships

  373. with other people.

  374. Did you notice

  375. it's as the community

  376. of male and female

  377. that we image God?

  378. Marriage,

  379. family,

  380. friendship,

  381. community,

  382. church,

  383. society,

  384. these are all

  385. God's good idea.

  386. We're made for relationship

  387. with the created world.

  388. We hear the instructions

  389. to rule over,

  390. to subdue.

  391. There is agriculture here.

  392. There's care for creation.

  393. There's a relationship

  394. that we're supposed to have

  395. with the created world,

  396. and we'll think about that.

  397. But fundamentally,

  398. you and I are made

  399. for relationship

  400. with our creator God.

  401. So that we are most

  402. truly human

  403. when these relationships

  404. are right,

  405. and especially

  406. as our relationship

  407. with God is right.

  408. And we will see

  409. that when people break

  410. that relationship

  411. with God,

  412. everything else

  413. begins to fall apart.

  414. That sin,

  415. as it comes into the world,

  416. has a fracturing effect

  417. on relationships.

  418. So we are made

  419. to represent God.

  420. We're made for relationship

  421. with God.

  422. And thirdly,

  423. as we think about

  424. Genesis 1,

  425. what does it mean

  426. to be made in the image

  427. of God?

  428. It means we are made

  429. to live a righteous life.

  430. And here we need to think

  431. just for a moment

  432. about the role

  433. of an ambassador

  434. or an embassy.

  435. I know some of you

  436. have to visit embassies

  437. for visas and passports

  438. and such things.

  439. But you think about

  440. an ambassador or a visa

  441. or an embassy,

  442. what are they doing?

  443. On the one hand,

  444. they speak

  445. and they represent

  446. a particular nation,

  447. a prime minister,

  448. a president.

  449. They are to represent

  450. their values.

  451. It becomes,

  452. in a sense,

  453. also a little colony

  454. of home

  455. in a foreign country.

  456. And what Genesis 1

  457. is saying to us

  458. is that as image bearers,

  459. God created us

  460. to live like Him

  461. and to rule like Him,

  462. to display His values

  463. on the earth,

  464. to make a paradise

  465. on the earth.

  466. God creates Eden

  467. as paradise,

  468. as we'll see.

  469. And the intention was

  470. that as people lived

  471. under God's rule,

  472. that paradise would spread,

  473. that the glory

  474. would fill the earth,

  475. that it needs us

  476. to live a righteous

  477. kind of a life.

  478. So God gives the direction.

  479. You rule,

  480. you fill,

  481. you subdue.

  482. God's in charge.

  483. And when life is going well,

  484. people respond

  485. gladly and obediently.

  486. And it's in that context

  487. that creation

  488. is described

  489. as very good.

  490. And the condition

  491. of the first man

  492. and the first woman,

  493. Adam and Eve,

  494. was also very good.

  495. They were created

  496. without sin.

  497. They were originally

  498. holy and righteous.

  499. And they were created then

  500. to do God's work

  501. in God's ways.

  502. not to abuse

  503. one another

  504. or the environment,

  505. not to exploit

  506. or to destroy,

  507. but to live

  508. in the world

  509. in such a way

  510. to reflect the care,

  511. the goodness,

  512. the just rightness

  513. of God

  514. as creator.

  515. It's the natural question

  516. at this point

  517. becomes,

  518. why is the world

  519. so messed up

  520. and broken?

  521. Why is there so much damage

  522. to the environment?

  523. Why is there so much damage

  524. done to other image bearers?

  525. And we need to understand

  526. that that is not the way

  527. God designed us

  528. to be as image bearers.

  529. To go back

  530. to the analogy

  531. of a statue,

  532. if we are statues

  533. representing God's image

  534. and glory,

  535. then that statue

  536. has become cracked.

  537. There are pieces missing

  538. and the paint

  539. is fading.

  540. Rico Tice memorably

  541. describes people

  542. as both the glory

  543. and the garbage

  544. of the universe.

  545. Capacity for beauty

  546. and destruction

  547. almost at the same time.

  548. So for us

  549. it becomes really important

  550. if we are to truly

  551. understand

  552. what it means

  553. to be made

  554. in the image of God,

  555. there is a point

  556. where we need to understand

  557. that we are not

  558. the way we are supposed to be

  559. and we need to find

  560. where can a perfect image

  561. be found?

  562. And to recognize

  563. that God in his kindness

  564. has given us one.

  565. There is one

  566. who has lived

  567. in this life

  568. and he has perfectly

  569. imaged God to us

  570. and his name

  571. is Jesus,

  572. the Son of God.

  573. That's why Emily

  574. read for us

  575. from Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1:3

  576. verse 3,

  577. Jesus,

  578. the Son of God,

  579. he is the radiance

  580. of God's glory

  581. and the perfect

  582. representation

  583. of his being.

  584. Jesus is the perfect

  585. image bearer.

  586. And the story

  587. of the Bible

  588. in one hand

  589. becomes a story

  590. of God's great

  591. restoration

  592. and renewal process.

  593. That Jesus comes,

  594. the perfect image bearer

  595. and he comes

  596. to live the perfect life

  597. that we don't

  598. and to die

  599. in our place

  600. for our sins

  601. and to give us

  602. forgiveness

  603. and new life

  604. so that we might

  605. be restored

  606. and renewed

  607. and reshaped

  608. into his perfect image.

  609. Colossians 3 verse 10.

    Colossians 3:10

  610. That process is ongoing,

  611. won't be complete

  612. until final glory.

  613. But by faith,

  614. when we trust in Jesus,

  615. we are being restored

  616. and one day

  617. we will be perfectly

  618. restored

  619. to God's original

  620. and good design.

  621. So that's something

  622. of what it means

  623. to be made

  624. in the image of God.

  625. But we need to ask ourselves

  626. a really important question.

  627. Why does it matter?

  628. So what?

  629. What's so significant

  630. about Genesis 1?

  631. Let's think about it

  632. for a moment

  633. personally.

  634. Take this as a chance

  635. to kind of pull back

  636. and get the big picture

  637. of who we are,

  638. to get a God's eye view

  639. on your life,

  640. your purpose

  641. and your destiny.

  642. Because it's here

  643. in Genesis 1.

  644. We'll also take

  645. a few minutes to think

  646. what does this say

  647. to us culturally?

  648. How does Genesis 1

  649. help us to think

  650. about the various isms

  651. that we have

  652. within society?

  653. What impact

  654. does it have

  655. on value of life questions,

  656. on environmental concerns?

  657. And we can use this text

  658. to help us to think

  659. about our mission

  660. as the church as well.

  661. As we bring

  662. the good news

  663. of Jesus to people,

  664. how much can these themes

  665. help us?

  666. So again,

  667. there's loads that we could say,

  668. but we're going to talk

  669. about design.

  670. We're going to talk

  671. about dignity.

  672. We're going to talk

  673. about direction.

  674. And we're going to talk

  675. about destiny.

  676. So let's think,

  677. first of all,

  678. about design.

  679. So like the rest

  680. of creation,

  681. we discover in Genesis 1

  682. that as human beings,

  683. we are designed

  684. with goodness,

  685. with order,

  686. and with beauty.

  687. we discover

  688. that God has made us

  689. and he has made

  690. our physical bodies.

  691. God has given us

  692. our biology.

  693. God has given us

  694. our gender.

  695. Psalm 139,

  696. God knits us together.

  697. We are fearfully

  698. and wonderfully made.

  699. And we discover

  700. at root,

  701. you are designed

  702. by God

  703. and you are dear

  704. to God.

  705. not a product

  706. of chance,

  707. not haphazard.

  708. And that has

  709. some really important

  710. implications

  711. for some of the

  712. big questions

  713. that are going around

  714. in our day.

  715. Perhaps we think

  716. about the issue

  717. of transgenderism.

  718. And we recognize

  719. biblically

  720. that it is wrong

  721. to say that we are

  722. free to destroy

  723. or to remake

  724. our bodies

  725. based on our own

  726. personal desires.

  727. And we discover

  728. this essential

  729. basic truth

  730. that sex and gender

  731. belong together

  732. by God's good design.

  733. One of the ways

  734. that we can love

  735. people well

  736. is to speak

  737. the truth in love.

  738. If you have any

  739. people who are

  740. wrestling with those

  741. and you want to

  742. talk about that,

  743. do come and speak

  744. to me afterwards.

  745. But it reminds us

  746. that at base

  747. our physical bodies

  748. matter to God,

  749. therefore they should

  750. matter to us.

  751. They are given to us

  752. as a gift

  753. and so we should

  754. care for our bodies.

  755. You know,

  756. sleep,

  757. exercise,

  758. diet,

  759. those are all

  760. good things

  761. for us to think

  762. about.

  763. It's important

  764. for us to recognize

  765. that we have

  766. been created

  767. with that sexual

  768. differentiation

  769. of male and female

  770. in part to speak

  771. to the wonder

  772. of our God,

  773. unity and diversity.

  774. We've been created

  775. the way that we have

  776. to allow for

  777. the be fruitful

  778. and multiply

  779. to take place.

  780. So we have been

  781. made by God's

  782. good design

  783. and we should

  784. give thanks

  785. and we should

  786. protect that

  787. reality.

  788. Related to that,

  789. secondly,

  790. to be made in the

  791. image of God

  792. is to give us

  793. fundamental dignity.

  794. I think that's one

  795. of the radical

  796. teachings of Genesis 1

  797. and this is,

  798. so remember,

  799. so the people

  800. had been slaves

  801. for over 400 years.

  802. Their families

  803. had been slaves.

  804. No value,

  805. no dignity.

  806. Only the king

  807. really counted

  808. and here is God

  809. speaking into that

  810. and saying,

  811. listen,

  812. every single life

  813. matters.

  814. Every single

  815. one of us,

  816. every single person

  817. on our planet

  818. is made in God's

  819. image,

  820. carefully fashioned.

  821. Everyone has value

  822. and dignity

  823. to borrow

  824. from C.S. Lewis.

  825. You will never,

  826. ever look at

  827. a mere mortal.

  828. And I think

  829. most people

  830. in our society

  831. recognize this,

  832. but here's something

  833. that's really

  834. important.

  835. That people,

  836. according to God,

  837. are made in His

  838. image is the

  839. only solid

  840. foundation

  841. for saying

  842. that those

  843. isms are wrong,

  844. that we react

  845. against.

  846. Racism,

  847. sexism,

  848. tribalism.

  849. We can only say

  850. those are

  851. objectively wrong

  852. if we accept

  853. that God

  854. has made us

  855. and God

  856. says that

  857. everybody

  858. matters.

  859. If it's just

  860. what society

  861. thinks,

  862. on any given

  863. day or generation,

  864. we find ourselves

  865. on profoundly

  866. shaky ground.

  867. Think about

  868. what happened

  869. in Germany

  870. in the 1930s

  871. and 40s.

  872. Why can we

  873. say

  874. that the

  875. Nazi movement

  876. was evil?

  877. Why can we

  878. say that it

  879. was profoundly

  880. evil to

  881. destroy

  882. Jews

  883. and gypsies

  884. and people

  885. with disabilities?

  886. it's because

  887. of this

  888. objective

  889. truth from

  890. God

  891. that we

  892. are made

  893. in the

  894. image of

  895. God.

  896. Why can we

  897. say that

  898. abortion is

  899. wrong,

  900. that assisted

  901. dying is

  902. wrong?

  903. Because we

  904. have this

  905. objective

  906. truth that

  907. comes from

  908. God Himself

  909. that says,

  910. I create

  911. life and

  912. every person

  913. is an image

  914. bearer and

  915. life has

  916. worth that

  917. must be

  918. protected.

  919. Think about

  920. the storyline

  921. of the

  922. Bible.

  923. We have

  924. the eternal

  925. Son of

  926. God

  927. becoming

  928. an embryo

  929. in the

  930. womb of

  931. Mary.

  932. There's the

  933. value of

  934. human life,

  935. that God

  936. became one

  937. of us

  938. in order

  939. to save

  940. us.

  941. Another way

  942. being made

  943. in the image

  944. of God

  945. matters is

  946. to do

  947. with

  948. direction.

  949. How are

  950. we supposed

  951. to live

  952. in this

  953. world?

  954. How are

  955. we to

  956. handle our

  957. responsibility

  958. of caring

  959. for this

  960. world?

  961. And again,

  962. Genesis 1

  963. sets some

  964. principles to

  965. give us

  966. direction.

  967. And it

  968. takes time

  969. and care to

  970. think about

  971. how we work

  972. out these

  973. principles,

  974. but we

  975. remember that

  976. principle that

  977. we are to

  978. care for the

  979. world like

  980. God.

  981. We are not

  982. masters here,

  983. we are not

  984. the kings and

  985. queens,

  986. God is the

  987. true king and

  988. we serve

  989. under him.

  990. And we

  991. are called

  992. as people

  993. to practice

  994. good stewardship.

  995. So that

  996. requires care

  997. and attention

  998. over a whole

  999. range of

  1000. ethical choices.

  1001. And I think

  1002. again it's

  1003. really good

  1004. that we're

  1005. much more

  1006. aware now

  1007. than perhaps

  1008. we used

  1009. to be

  1010. of some

  1011. of those

  1012. ethical

  1013. choices.

  1014. You know,

  1015. how we

  1016. shop,

  1017. how we

  1018. eat,

  1019. how we

  1020. spend,

  1021. how we

  1022. save.

  1023. They impact

  1024. our environment,

  1025. the impact

  1026. on the lives

  1027. of others.

  1028. So we

  1029. need to

  1030. give

  1031. attention.

  1032. Recycling,

  1033. reducing waste,

  1034. concern for

  1035. habitat loss.

  1036. Those are

  1037. things that

  1038. should concern

  1039. us as

  1040. Christians.

  1041. And it

  1042. should concern

  1043. us too to

  1044. think of

  1045. the social

  1046. impact of

  1047. how we live

  1048. in the world

  1049. day to day.

  1050. What do my

  1051. choices,

  1052. big and

  1053. small,

  1054. mean for the

  1055. welfare of

  1056. other people

  1057. made in the

  1058. image of God?

  1059. How do

  1060. my actions

  1061. and my

  1062. choices

  1063. help to

  1064. care for

  1065. the poor,

  1066. the weak,

  1067. the vulnerable,

  1068. who are

  1069. also made

  1070. in the

  1071. image of

  1072. God?

  1073. So we're

  1074. to care for

  1075. the world

  1076. like God,

  1077. but secondly,

  1078. we are placed

  1079. in communities

  1080. to reflect

  1081. God.

  1082. And again,

  1083. I don't know

  1084. how much

  1085. you have

  1086. thought about

  1087. that,

  1088. but again,

  1089. by God's

  1090. design,

  1091. we are

  1092. placed where

  1093. we are

  1094. in our

  1095. circles

  1096. in order

  1097. that something

  1098. of God's

  1099. glory and

  1100. goodness and

  1101. kindness and

  1102. care and

  1103. truth and

  1104. justice would

  1105. be known to

  1106. the people in

  1107. the rest of

  1108. that circle.

  1109. Life in our

  1110. home and our

  1111. family,

  1112. where we go

  1113. to school or

  1114. work or

  1115. university,

  1116. the neighborhood

  1117. that we live

  1118. in,

  1119. the church

  1120. that we

  1121. are placed

  1122. in,

  1123. become places

  1124. in which to

  1125. show something

  1126. of God's

  1127. love and

  1128. justice and

  1129. kindness to

  1130. the people

  1131. around us.

  1132. We're not

  1133. just a bunch

  1134. of individuals.

  1135. We are

  1136. created in

  1137. communities

  1138. so that people

  1139. might look at

  1140. us and see

  1141. something of

  1142. God in us.

  1143. Think about

  1144. that as we

  1145. are confronted

  1146. tomorrow with

  1147. the difficult

  1148. calling or

  1149. as we think

  1150. about those

  1151. tough family

  1152. relationships that

  1153. we have and

  1154. maybe the

  1155. awkward flatmate

  1156. but also to

  1157. think about our

  1158. life as a

  1159. church as we

  1160. look to welcome

  1161. people in,

  1162. as we want to

  1163. break down

  1164. barriers.

  1165. The fact that

  1166. we are made

  1167. in the image

  1168. of God and

  1169. that everyone

  1170. is made in

  1171. the image of

  1172. God can set a

  1173. direction for

  1174. how we live

  1175. day to day.

  1176. Here's the

  1177. fourth and

  1178. final thing for

  1179. us to think

  1180. about this

  1181. morning, why

  1182. it matters to

  1183. be made in

  1184. the image of

  1185. God.

  1186. It speaks to

  1187. our destiny.

  1188. Now if our

  1189. operating principle

  1190. is that we

  1191. come from

  1192. nothing and

  1193. we're made by

  1194. no one and

  1195. we have to try

  1196. and create our

  1197. own identity and

  1198. figure out how

  1199. life works and

  1200. in the end

  1201. there is

  1202. nothing, I

  1203. think we

  1204. recognize that

  1205. doesn't offer

  1206. great hope,

  1207. maybe it

  1208. doesn't offer a

  1209. solid motivation

  1210. for wanting to

  1211. make this world

  1212. a better place.

  1213. And so we

  1214. need to hear

  1215. and to keep

  1216. hearing God's

  1217. better story,

  1218. the true story

  1219. of what it

  1220. means that we

  1221. are made as

  1222. image bearers.

  1223. Now as the

  1224. story progresses

  1225. we discover

  1226. Genesis 3, we

  1227. discover the

  1228. reality that as

  1229. people we have

  1230. fallen away from

  1231. our God because

  1232. of sin, life is

  1233. not right now

  1234. paradise on

  1235. earth and we

  1236. know this.

  1237. But we also

  1238. have this

  1239. wonderful reality

  1240. that through the

  1241. goodness and

  1242. grace of our

  1243. God, he is in

  1244. the process of

  1245. restoring fallen

  1246. image bearers

  1247. through his son

  1248. the Lord Jesus.

  1249. that we

  1250. recognize at a

  1251. particular point

  1252. in time in

  1253. history the

  1254. Lord Jesus came

  1255. into this world

  1256. to display

  1257. perfectly the

  1258. glory and love

  1259. of God for us

  1260. and the place

  1261. where we see it

  1262. most clearly is

  1263. as he dies on

  1264. the cross, his

  1265. body is torn

  1266. and beaten as

  1267. he bears our

  1268. sin and the

  1269. wrath of God

  1270. that we deserve,

  1271. we are seeing

  1272. God's commitment

  1273. to renew and to

  1274. restore image

  1275. bearers.

  1276. And when we

  1277. place our faith

  1278. in Jesus, we

  1279. are united to

  1280. him and then

  1281. God sets to

  1282. work at

  1283. restoring and

  1284. renewing that

  1285. image that his

  1286. spirit comes to

  1287. live within us,

  1288. to begin that

  1289. process that will

  1290. be complete one

  1291. day.

  1292. But we can say

  1293. the moment that

  1294. we trust in

  1295. Jesus, if you

  1296. trust in Jesus

  1297. today, you

  1298. become a new

  1299. creation, that

  1300. God's spirit

  1301. comes to live in

  1302. your heart, so

  1303. now all of a

  1304. sudden, you're

  1305. more able to

  1306. represent God in

  1307. his world.

  1308. Not perfectly,

  1309. but God is

  1310. working in us.

  1311. And now we

  1312. begin to enjoy a

  1313. relationship with

  1314. God that we

  1315. never had before.

  1316. We call him our

  1317. father.

  1318. He speaks in the

  1319. Bible, we speak

  1320. in prayer, we

  1321. enjoy his love.

  1322. And the spirit

  1323. works in us to

  1324. make us more and

  1325. more righteous.

  1326. So it does become

  1327. true that people

1328. can look at us and

  1329. see something of
