  1. We're reading today from John's Gospel, John chapter 19, verses 41 through chapter 20, verse 18.

    John 19:41

  2. This is God's holy word.

  3. Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid.

  4. So because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

  5. Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early.

  6. While it was still dark and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  7. So she ran and she went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them,

  8. They've taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him.

  9. So Peter went out with the other disciple and they were going towards the tomb.

  10. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and he reached the tomb first.

  11. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

  12. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.

  13. He saw the linen cloths lying there.

  14. And the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.

  15. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in and he saw and believed.

  16. For as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

  17. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

  18. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.

  19. And as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb.

  20. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.

  21. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  22. She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.

  23. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing.

  24. But she did not know that it was Jesus.

  25. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  26. Whom are you seeking?

  27. Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.

  28. Jesus said to her, Mary.

  29. She turned and said to him in Aramaic, Rabbani, which means teacher.

  30. Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  31. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.

  32. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her.

  33. This is God's holy word.

  34. All right, here we are, week two in the upper pulpit.

  35. So I hope that's okay today.

  36. We just read the story of the resurrection from John's gospel, and I have just two points to make for you this morning from it.

  37. First, the place of the resurrection, and then secondly, the gardener of the resurrection.

  38. So let's think first about the place of the resurrection.

  39. So Mary, at the beginning of the story, runs to the tomb while it's still dark, before the sun is risen.

  40. And she sees there that the tomb is empty, and so she, we read, she goes and she runs back to where the disciples are,

  41. and she tells Peter and then John.

  42. John's the one that it says, the one whom Jesus loved, the disciple that he loved.

  43. That's John.

  44. He's the author here.

  45. And then you've got to love that they all run back to the tomb, Mary, Peter, John.

  46. But in verse four, I think this is great.

  47. John says, we left at the same time, but I outran Peter.

  48. So John, a little healthy competition there.

  49. He's just faster than Peter, and he wanted that to be recorded.

  50. So it was.

  51. And John sees the face cloth.

  52. He stoops down into the tomb, and he sees the face cloth of Jesus that had been over Christ's face,

  53. and it's folded neatly in the corner, and it says, he believed.

  54. But then it says, he didn't understand all it meant.

  55. He didn't understand yet all that the Scriptures had said, but he believed that Jesus was alive.

  56. What does it mean?

  57. He believed Jesus was physically alive, not dead.

  58. So he and Peter, they believe, and they leave.

  59. And then in verse seven, we're left with Mary, Mary Magdalene.

  60. She is alone there at the tomb by herself.

  61. And the text tells us in verse seven that she was there weeping.

  62. The Greek word for weeping there is not quiet grief, not just tears.

  63. It is, the dictionaries say it means to bewail, to howl, to cry like a child is what one of the Greek lexicons said,

  64. to cry like a child.

  65. So this is the kind of crying that she's doing here where you can't catch your breath,

  66. like when little children are crying and you have to calm them down because they're losing their ability to breathe.

  67. That's the type of tear she has here.

  68. Jesus had removed seven demons from her in Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  69. She had had a life that was in ruins before that.

  70. And she had found a home in him, and he was everything to her.

  71. She followed him.

  72. She worshiped him.

  73. He was her Savior.

  74. She watched him die.

  75. She was one of the last couple of people at the cross after he had died.

  76. So she always was there.

  77. She lingered.

  78. She stayed back.

  79. She came first to see the tomb.

  80. And she's already faced the grief of his death.

  81. And now she believes that his body has been disrespected.

  82. So what does she say?

  83. She says twice in the passage, verse 2 and 13,

  84. they have taken away the Lord, my Lord, and we don't know where they put him.

  85. What does she think?

  86. She thinks that grave robbers have taken his body.

  87. And grave robbery was a big issue in the first century and very much at this time.

  88. Now what is Mary's, in such grief, she's lost everything.

  89. And now they disrespected his body.

  90. What is she assuming?

  91. Mary is assuming that the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ did not happen.

  92. She thinks that his body was taken, stolen.

  93. He's still dead.

  94. It's just that he's somewhere else.

  95. Now she gives us one of two most common responses to denials of the physical resurrection of Jesus.

  96. And the two most common ways that people approach it in the modern world are to say, number one, his body was stolen.

  97. The scholars, you can read a wonderful book by Gary Habermas that is thousands of pages just working through details of historical facts around the resurrection event.

  98. And one of the things Habermas argues very carefully is that it is a majority scholarly consensus, not exclusively, but in the New Testament scholarship and in historical scholarship, that Jesus Christ was a real man, that he really did die on a cross.

  99. He was crucified under Pontius Pilate and that the tomb was empty.

  100. So that's a majority view of believing and non-believing historians that look carefully at the resurrection event.

  101. But for many, they say what Mary says here, and that's, well, his body was stolen.

  102. That's one answer.

  103. The other answer people give is the resurrection.

  104. We don't know what happened to his body, but the resurrection is just a symbol.

  105. It's just a symbol.

  106. And it's a symbol of hope and new beginnings in your life.

  107. You know, when you look at the resurrection, of course, he didn't rise from the dead because that is against the bounds of science.

  108. But, you know, you really can get out of debt.

  109. You really can walk into your boss's office and say, I deserve that promotion because the resurrection is the symbol of new beginnings.

  110. And it gives you hope and it inspires you and it brings you to a place where you can do things you could have never imagined because you simply believe that it's a spiritual truth only.

  111. So there's a man named Rudolf Bultmann, who was a famous in his time, New Testament scholar in the middle 20th century.

  112. And in 1941, this is what he writes about the resurrection.

  113. The resurrection was not physical, but, quote, something here and now, it's entering into a new dimension of existence.

  114. It's being set free from your past and from guilt and from care and from it's being freed to be open to loving one's fellow man.

  115. So it's just this mere symbol of new beginnings.

  116. And so that's the product of what we call the enlightenment program, a program of thoughts that began here on the Royal Mile some two and a half centuries ago.

  117. And that's that we have to keep Christianity, but we're going to de-supernaturalize it.

  118. And so we can say the resurrection is a symbol, but we could never say Jesus Christ actually rose from the dead physically.

  119. Now, I just want to ask you this morning in the first point, is that what John wanted you to think?

  120. Is that what the people who were closest to the event that wrote down the four histories we have of this story, the four gospels,

  121. was that the point they were making? Because the best historians are the people that are closest to the action,

  122. the people that were actually there that saw it.

  123. And is that what John wants you to get out of this, that the resurrection is not physical,

  124. but it is something that can, you know, really help you in your life to do better and be better

  125. and give you new beginnings and things like that?

  126. Here, John and Peter walk into the tomb in verse 8 and 9, and it says,

  127. They believe, but they did not yet understand what the Scripture had taught,

  128. that Christ, and here's the word, must rise from the dead.

  129. So they immediately believe by faith that he's alive, but they had it over time,

  130. just the next few days, they began to realize the Scripture said, taught, he must be physically alive.

  131. And what Scripture is being talked about there is the Old Testament.

  132. There's no New Testament yet.

  133. He's talking about the Old Testament, and so we sang earlier from Psalm 1610,

  134. that says,

  135. You will not abandon my soul to Sheol.

  136. You will not let the Holy One see corruption.

  137. That's a prophecy in the Old Testament.

  138. And over the next few days, John starts to realize the whole Old Testament

  139. had to be fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Christ,

  140. or the Old Testament doesn't make sense.

  141. It was meaningless.

  142. And so he begins to realize this is a historical reality that's been prophesied from centuries ago,

  143. and this is the moment that it all begins to make sense, this physical resurrection.

  144. And so John's point is not, is he saying, you know,

  145. you should really look to the resurrection and be inspired today.

  146. No.

  147. No.

  148. He's saying that if, how did Paul put it?

  149. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15, 14,

  150. If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain,

  151. and your faith is in vain.

  152. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile,

  153. and you are still dead in your sins.

  154. And so Bultman's Christ, Bultman's view of the resurrection,

  155. and so many others that do exist in our time and in our moment,

  156. what are they saying to us?

  157. Look, the Bible says either Jesus Christ is physically resurrected,

  158. or Christianity is pointless.

  159. The symbol of Christ's resurrection doesn't give you anything.

  160. All it tells you is that death still wins.

  161. Yeah, you can get out of debt, or you can go get that promotion,

  162. or you can better yourself in this life,

  163. but you're still going to die, and there is no victory over death.

  164. If Jesus Christ is dead, you are still in your sins,

  165. and there is no hope at the end of this life to face anything other than death.

  166. And that means that the symbol, the mere symbol,

  167. doesn't give you what's been offered by folks that have said that.

  168. You know, think about Mary.

  169. Mary is so right.

  170. Mary, what does Mary do?

  171. When Mary, who is confused, thinks Jesus is still dead,

  172. what does she say?

  173. Well, you read it.

  174. She says, wow, well, at least I've got this great symbol.

  175. Man, I know that his body's not here, but I do feel uplifted today.

  176. No, she's weeping uncontrollably.

  177. She can't breathe, because she said, this has been in vain.

  178. This has been pointless.

  179. This has not produced the forgiveness of my sins

  180. and hope in the face of death.

  181. She knows that without the physical resurrection,

  182. what she thinks has not happened,

  183. she tells us the right thing about that,

  184. that all we can do is weep.

  185. Friends, the resurrection is not a symbol.

  186. Jesus Christ rose from the dead in real time,

  187. real life history, physically.

  188. And we've got to think about a couple things.

  189. One, the people who preached the resurrection in just those first few days

  190. did it in the very place where Christ was crucified

  191. and the tomb was publicly celebrated as empty.

  192. The proximity is too close.

  193. If you go out and preach, as we read about in Acts chapter 1 and 2,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  194. to thousands of people within just 40 days,

  195. and there's thousands of people coming to faith in Jesus,

  196. the resurrected Jesus in the city,

  197. what can they do?

  198. All they've got to do is go and look.

  199. They saw him crucified,

  200. and they can go and see the proximity is too near.

  201. And we've already said the best historians,

  202. we need to do what the historical scholars tell us to do,

  203. and that's understand that the best historians

  204. are the ones that were eyewitnesses,

  205. that were the ones closest to the action.

  206. And every eyewitness account we have of Jesus' life,

  207. his death, his resurrection,

  208. says that he rose from the dead.

  209. Every single one that we have says that,

  210. of people who were actually there and around in the time.

  211. Paul says Jesus Christ,

  212. if you're a visitor today,

  213. we've been working through the book of James,

  214. the letter of James.

  215. We'll be back to that next week.

  216. Paul says that Jesus appeared very specifically

  217. to six individuals and then more than 500 people,

  218. and he says that James,

  219. the biological brother of Jesus,

  220. was one of those.

  221. James did not believe in Jesus

  222. during Jesus' life and death.

  223. He did not follow his brother.

  224. What happened?

  225. Paul says Jesus Christ,

  226. the resurrected Christ,

  227. appeared to his brother James,

  228. and all of a sudden,

  229. James becomes the pillar of the church,

  230. one of the pillars of the church in Jerusalem,

  231. the writer of this great letter

  232. that we've been working through.

  233. Jesus Christ's resurrection is not a symbol,

  234. it's real life history,

  235. and today I'll move on from this point with these words.

  236. Christianity does indeed provide good feelings.

  237. Yes, Christianity can,

  238. Jesus can indeed give a therapeutic quality

  239. quality to your heart and life

  240. where he does lift you up,

  241. and he does make your emotions healthier,

  242. but Christianity is not feelings.

  243. Christianity is the fact

  244. that God in the middle of history

  245. died for your sins

  246. and rose from the dead physically

  247. and has announced the end of death.

  248. Christianity is not first a feeling,

  249. it's first a fact.

  250. Christianity provides a great source

  251. for introspective meditation,

  252. yes,

  253. but it is not self-help.

  254. Christianity is a historical pronouncement.

  255. It is good news,

  256. it is not good advice,

  257. and it is the good news

  258. that his body cannot be found

  259. in Jerusalem today.

  260. His bones,

  261. his ash are not there.

  262. That is the news of Christianity.

  263. As I move on,

  264. you've got to do what Paul did.

  265. In 1 Corinthians 15,

  266. Paul whittled down,

  267. if you were to ask,

  268. what is Christianity?

  269. You can whittle it down

  270. to just a few lines,

  271. and what Paul gives you

  272. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  273. three to four,

  274. the scholars tell us

  275. that this is one of the earliest creeds

  276. of Christianity.

  277. So, you know,

  278. we write creeds

  279. like the Apostles' Creed,

  280. but there were little creeds

  281. already traveling about

  282. from Jerusalem,

  283. and Richard Baucom

  284. in his great book,

  285. Jesus and the Eyewitnesses,

  286. says that within months

  287. of Christ's resurrection,

  288. this creed was already

  289. being stated in churches

  290. near Jerusalem.

  291. And the creed is in

  292. 1 Corinthians 15,

  293. three and four,

  294. and listen to Paul.

  295. He's footnoting it.

  296. He's saying,

  297. look, this didn't come from me.

  298. Listen to how he says it.

  299. I delivered to you

  300. as of first importance

  301. what I received.

  302. That's like a modern day

  303. footnote in our books.

  304. I'm sourcing it.

  305. I'm telling you,

  306. this did not come from me.

  307. I did not originally write it.

  308. That Christ died for our sins

  309. in accordance with the scriptures.

  310. That he was buried.

  311. That he was raised

  312. on the third day

  313. in accordance with the scriptures.

  314. That's what John realized.

  315. He had to rise from the dead

  316. according to the scriptures

  317. of the Old Testament.

  318. And that he appeared

  319. to more than 500 people.

  320. Everybody around

  321. was saying it.

  322. They were all there.

  323. They were all eyewitnesses.

  324. They could check.

  325. The gospel is good news.

  326. It's not just good feelings.

  327. And so today,

  328. if this is a fact,

  329. if this is a fact,

  330. then it is.

  331. It has to reorder,

  332. reorient,

  333. disrupt your life.

  334. If Jesus Christ

  335. came into the middle of history

  336. as man claiming to be God

  337. and he died

  338. and he rose from the dead

  339. on the third day physically,

  340. that fact has to disrupt your life.

  341. It has to.

  342. It has to reorder it.

  343. Whether we want it to or not,

  344. whether we like it or not,

  345. and we don't.

  346. But it's a fact of history.

  347. It has to reorder us

  348. from top to bottom.

  349. It has to change us.

  350. Secondly, lastly,

  351. what is then,

  352. if it's a fact,

  353. what then does the resurrection mean?

  354. And here John teaches us

  355. about the gardener

  356. of the resurrection.

  357. So in John's gospel,

  358. throughout John's gospel,

  359. it's full of irony.

  360. That's one of the big things.

  361. Misunderstanding all the time

  362. up to this point.

  363. And here we've got,

  364. of course,

  365. a great misunderstanding

  366. where Mary Magdalene

  367. doesn't see him.

  368. She doesn't know who he is.

  369. And so these two angels

  370. appear in the tomb,

  371. one at the head of where Jesus laid,

  372. one at the feet.

  373. And they say to her,

  374. woman,

  375. why are you weeping?

  376. Now,

  377. if you were around on Good Friday,

  378. you'll know,

  379. we talked about how woman

  380. is not an insult.

  381. It's a term of honor

  382. in the first century.

  383. So they're honoring her,

  384. coming to see him.

  385. Woman,

  386. why are you weeping?

  387. And so you can hear in that

  388. a softness,

  389. but also a gentle rebuke of sorts.

  390. Why are you crying?

  391. What did you come look,

  392. who did you come looking for?

  393. And she had traveled around with him

  394. and heard him say,

  395. the son of man must die

  396. and must rise from the dead

  397. three days later.

  398. She had heard it preached.

  399. And yet,

  400. she still just couldn't get there.

  401. She couldn't quite believe it.

  402. But then,

  403. of course,

  404. the culmination point

  405. of all John's gospel

  406. of misunderstanding

  407. comes here

  408. when all of a sudden

  409. she turns around

  410. and there is Jesus.

  411. And it says,

  412. she's supposed him

  413. to be the gardener,

  414. the mere gardener,

  415. the one who would,

  416. you know,

  417. tend the flowers

  418. around the tombs

  419. and things like that.

  420. And he elevates the question.

  421. He says,

  422. woman,

  423. again,

  424. why are you weeping?

  425. Whom do you seek?

  426. And what is he asking?

  427. He's asking something like,

  428. what kind of a God,

  429. what kind of Messiah,

  430. what kind of a Savior

  431. did you think you were following?

  432. Who are you looking for

  433. in this moment?

  434. Now,

  435. I think this is the culmination point

  436. of all the misunderstanding stories

  437. in John's gospel.

  438. Remember Nicodemus,

  439. Jesus said,

  440. if you want to be saved,

  441. you've got to be born again.

  442. And Nicodemus said,

  443. how can a man

  444. be born of his mother's womb twice?

  445. That doesn't make any sense.

  446. It's impossible, right?

  447. Misunderstanding,

  448. it's constant throughout John's gospel.

  449. And here is that

  450. culmination point

  451. of this moment

  452. of complete misunderstanding.

  453. What do we learn?

  454. When you go through

  455. John's gospel

  456. and you realize

  457. that this woman

  458. had seven demons

  459. removed from her,

  460. she followed Jesus

  461. so closely.

  462. You can read

  463. the other gospels

  464. and see how the apostles

  465. can never get it right.

  466. Nicodemus couldn't get it.

  467. Nobody could understand

  468. and see.

  469. What are we being told?

  470. We're being told,

  471. it is impossible

  472. to believe the resurrection.

  473. It's impossible

  474. to believe in him.

  475. That's what John's gospel

  476. ultimately teaches.

  477. Why?

  478. Because the Old Testament

  479. and the New Testament

  480. says this to us

  481. in so many ways.

  482. Isaiah,

  483. you keep on hearing

  484. but you don't understand.

  485. You keep on seeing

  486. but you do not perceive.

  487. No one is righteous.

  488. No, not one.

  489. No one understands.

  490. Nobody seeks for God.

  491. It is impossible

  492. as we are

  493. as human beings

  494. born into the veil of tears

  495. in the light of our sin

  496. to actually believe

  497. in the resurrection.

  498. We refuse.

  499. He has so clearly

  500. revealed himself

  501. yet in our struggle

  502. in our upside down hearts

  503. we say no.

  504. We can't do it.

  505. We can't believe.

  506. We don't want to believe.

  507. John Calvin gave a really famous quote

  508. that I've said here too many times.

  509. In fact,

  510. there's a couple people

  511. in the church

  512. who sort of make fun of me

  513. for reusing the quote

  514. over and over again.

  515. And so I know that will happen

  516. after the service today

  517. but it gets reused

  518. over and over again

  519. because it's so right

  520. and true and good.

  521. But I don't want to highlight

  522. you'll hear the most common point

  523. but listen to the very end.

  524. Calvin writes,

  525. human nature,

  526. so to speak,

  527. is perpetually

  528. a factory of idols.

  529. We know that one.

  530. Man's mind,

  531. full as it is

  532. of pride and boldness,

  533. dares to imagine a God

  534. according to his own capacity.

  535. As it sluggishly plods,

  536. indeed is overwhelmed

  537. by the crassest ignorance.

  538. It conceives,

  539. and here's the word,

  540. an unreality

  541. and an empty appearance

  542. as God.

  543. Calvin says,

  544. we all live in unreality

  545. which is

  546. the world of self-deception,

  547. self-sufficiency

  548. where we take

  549. what is God revealed to us

  550. and we flip it upside down

  551. because we refuse to believe it.

  552. Francis Spufford,

  553. the great novelist

  554. who was an atheist

  555. turned Christian,

  556. this is what he writes about it.

  557. What Calvin's talking about here,

  558. what we're talking about here,

  559. is not just our tendency

  560. to lurch

  561. and to stumble

  562. and to mess things up

  563. by accident,

  564. but this is our active inclination

  565. to break stuff.

  566. And stuff here

  567. refers

  568. to promises,

  569. relationships,

  570. people we care about,

  571. our own well-being

  572. and other people's well-being,

  573. we break stuff.

  574. We mess it up.

  575. You are a being,

  576. he writes,

  577. whose wants make no sense,

  578. who don't,

  579. you don't harmonize,

  580. your desires deep down

  581. are completely discordantly arranged.

  582. You truly want to possess

  583. and you truly do not want to possess

  584. at the very same time.

  585. You are equipped far more

  586. for farce and tragedy

  587. than for happy endings.

  588. You see,

  589. what is unreality?

  590. What is being talked about here?

  591. It's this,

  592. that every one of us

  593. are not passive victims

  594. of confusion

  595. around the resurrection.

  596. We're not passive victims

  597. of confusion

  598. about who God is

  599. and whether or not

  600. he showed up

  601. and whether or not

  602. he's revealed himself.

  603. We are active manufacturers

  604. of smaller gods

  605. and we choose them

  606. more than the true,

  607. real,

  608. resurrected Christ,

  609. the God who actually

  610. has revealed himself

  611. to us in world history.

  612. We work hard

  613. to believe

  614. the tomb is empty

  615. yet he's still dead,

  616. that somebody stole his body.

  617. That's what the Bible teaches

  618. and so today if you come

  619. and you don't know

  620. what to make of the resurrection,

  621. I just want to gently say

  622. that the Bible teaches

  623. that we don't believe

  624. in the God

  625. who really exists

  626. and really has revealed himself

  627. not because there's not enough evidence,

  628. far from it,

  629. but because we don't want to.

  630. Because if we did,

  631. if Jesus Christ really did rise

  632. from the dead

  633. in the middle of history,

  634. that means you have to give away

  635. your independence fully.

  636. You have to,

  637. you have to be completely

  638. dependent on him.

  639. You know,

  640. no matter how we feel,

  641. if he really did rise

  642. from the dead,

  643. it changes everything.

  644. And that is so hard.

  645. And so we don't want it

  646. to be true.

  647. I was reading,

  648. or listening maybe,

  649. I can't remember,

  650. a story recently

  651. of Tim Keller

  652. talking about,

  653. in the past,

  654. talking about years

  655. of interviewing

  656. ministry candidates

  657. to plant churches.

  658. You know,

  659. a redeemer,

  660. when he was there,

  661. planted something like

  662. 80 or more churches

  663. in New York.

  664. And so they had

  665. a constant pipeline

  666. of interviewing

  667. ministry candidates

  668. to plant churches.

  669. And he said,

  670. one of the questions

  671. they would always ask is,

  672. first,

  673. we do this here

  674. in our presbytery,

  675. tell us your testimony.

  676. How did you come

  677. to faith in Jesus?

  678. That's sort of

  679. question number one.

  680. And he said that

  681. he noticed over the years

  682. everybody would almost,

  683. almost inevitably

  684. say the same thing.

  685. They would all say,

  686. I grew up in the church,

  687. but I never heard

  688. the gospel.

  689. And he said,

  690. boy,

  691. we got a lot

  692. of bad churches.

  693. Nobody's preaching

  694. the gospel.

  695. All these guys come through

  696. and they never hear

  697. the gospel.

  698. And of course,

  699. later on he heard

  700. one older man

  701. who came into ministry

  702. later in life say,

  703. I came to faith

  704. reading Martin Luther's

  705. commentary on Galatians.

  706. Talks a lot about

  707. justification

  708. and being forgiven.

  709. And Tim asked him,

  710. you know,

  711. well,

  712. was that the first time?

  713. He said,

  714. no, no, no,

  715. I'd read it many times.

  716. And he said,

  717. well,

  718. did you see something

  719. new in it?

  720. Did you hear something new?

  721. No, no,

  722. it was so plain.

  723. I'd studied it.

  724. I knew it like the back

  725. of my hand.

  726. And he said,

  727. what happened?

  728. And he said,

  729. I didn't have eyes to see.

  730. And so many of these guys,

  731. what do they mean?

  732. I grew up in a church

  733. and I never heard the gospel.

  734. They didn't have eyes to see.

  735. And you can probably

  736. tell that story as well.

  737. I grew up in a church

  738. or I've been in churches,

  739. but all of a sudden,

  740. one day,

  741. some of you can tell this story

  742. that all of a sudden,

  743. it was as if the light switch

  744. turned on.

  745. You see,

  746. left to ourselves,

  747. we cannot believe

  748. the resurrection.

  749. So what does Jesus do?

  750. And in the middle of the story,

  751. Mary accuses,

  752. in verse 16,

  753. accuses Jesus,

  754. in 15 and 16,

  755. of being the one

  756. who stole the body.

  757. Huh.

  758. And then what does he do?

  759. He just says her name,

  760. Mary.

  761. And the scales fall off.

  762. What she could not see

  763. one moment before,

  764. now she can see.

  765. The gardener.

  766. The gardener himself.

  767. And in this moment,

  768. we are seeing

  769. the first moment

  770. in human history

  771. of the application

  772. of the resurrection

  773. of the Son of God

  774. to someone's personal life.

  775. And how does it happen?

  776. It happens when Jesus,

  777. you know,

  778. you could study theology

  779. for 2,000 years.

  780. What you really need

  781. is for Jesus Christ

  782. to say your name.

  783. Mary,

  784. your name.

  785. and the scales

  786. will fall off.

  787. And what happens,

  788. he had already prepared

  789. her for this moment

  790. because a couple chapters ago

  791. when she was there,

  792. he had said,

  793. my sheep hear my voice

  794. and when I say their name,

  795. they come to me.

  796. And that's what he did for her.

  797. And the Bible

  798. comes today

  799. and tells you

  800. the exact same thing.

  801. What does it say?

  802. It says,

  803. today,

  804. if you hear his voice,

  805. do not harden your hearts.

  806. It says both that

  807. you cannot survive,

  808. you cannot believe

  809. without hearing your name

  810. spoken by him

  811. and today,

  812. don't harden your hearts.

  813. Hear his voice

  814. and you will come to him.

  815. Come to him.

  816. Wake up if you're sleepy

  817. in your faith.

  818. Come to him

  819. if you've never been

  820. in the faith.

  821. Hear it.

  822. He seeks you.

  823. He knocks at the door

  824. and just simply asks

  825. that you open it

  826. and you hear him

  827. calling to you.

  828. The resurrection,

  829. this is the word of God

  830. being preached.

  831. He is calling to you.

  832. He is saying,

  833. come and believe

  834. and the resurrection

  835. will be personally

  836. applied to you

  837. and you can face death

  838. without fear.

  839. Let me give you

  840. two applications

  841. as I close.

  842. Number one,

  843. when Mary wakes up

  844. and she sees him

  845. for the first time,

  846. her words,

  847. her actions show us

  848. the power of the resurrection

  849. because what she does here,

  850. as soon as she awakens,

  851. she obviously gives him

  852. a big bear hug.

  853. He has to say,

  854. do not cling to me.

  855. He's probably pulling

  856. her arms off

  857. because she's got her arms

  858. wrapped around him

  859. and she realizes

  860. in that moment

  861. that the power

  862. of the resurrection,

  863. that it is truly physical,

  864. that he's there.

  865. What is happening?

  866. The gardener

  867. of the resurrection

  868. is there

  869. and he is proclaiming

  870. in his resurrection,

  871. what is God saying to you?

  872. He's saying,

  873. look,

  874. I made this world

  875. and I'm not going

  876. to let it go away.

  877. I'm here to reorder it,

  878. to reshape it,

  879. to remake it

  880. and it begins with Jesus.

  881. He's physical,

  882. meaning that if you have

  883. things about this life

  884. that you love

  885. and I bet you do,

  886. gifts and your physicality

  887. and the people around you,

  888. the resurrection promises

  889. God is not letting

  890. creation order go.

  891. This is not some Gnostic text

  892. where it's only about

  893. the spiritual,

  894. no, not at all.

  895. In his physicality,

  896. in the fact that he hugs her,

  897. she hugs him.

  898. We're being told

  899. he has come to remake

  900. this world

  901. and renew it physically,

  902. finally,

  903. and ultimately forever

  904. and you see,

  905. when she says,

  906. when she says,

  907. when she supposes

  908. he's the gardener,

  909. she's not wrong.

  910. She's not wrong

  911. because what John does

  912. over and over again

  913. in John's gospel

  914. is he brings us back

  915. to the creation story

  916. and in the very beginning

  917. of world history,

  918. God,

  919. God the son here,

  920. made the world

  921. and the very first thing

  922. he did

  923. was he organized

  924. a beautiful garden

  925. called Eden

  926. and he,

  927. this son,

  928. is the gardener

  929. of creation.

  930. He made the garden

  931. in the beginning.

  932. He upheld it

  933. and it just so happens,

  934. it just so happens

  935. that in John 18,

  936. 41,

  937. John points out for us

  938. that the very place

  939. where Jesus was being crucified

  940. was next to a garden.

  941. Why?

  942. Because Jesus Christ

  943. who is God,

  944. the gardener of creation,

  945. but also the son of Adam,

  946. the second human,

  947. the second Adam,

  948. the one who came

  949. to fix what Adam

  950. broke in that garden,

  951. he hung upon the cursed tree

  952. just next to the garden

  953. so that his dead body

  954. would enter

  955. and blast open

  956. the gates of Eden

  957. and you could enter in.

  958. You see,

  959. when he comes out

  960. of the grave

  961. on the third day,

  962. he is not only

  963. the gardener of creation,

  964. he is now the gardener

  965. of new creation.

  966. He is the tree

  967. of life himself.

  968. The tree of life

  969. now stands there

  970. in the middle

  971. of the garden

  972. of Eden,

  973. the new Eden

  974. and that's what

  975. Revelation 22 says

  976. that the story

  977. of the world

  978. is us running away

  979. from that beautiful garden

  980. and Jesus bringing us

  981. back to it.

  982. He is the gardener.

  983. The gardener of creation

  984. here becomes the gardener

  985. of the new creation

  986. and so finally,

  987. second application,

  988. that means,

  989. look at what he says

  990. to her.

  991. He says,

  992. don't cling to me.

  993. I have not yet ascended.

  994. I go to my God

  995. and your God,

  996. my father,

  997. your father.

  998. What is that language?

  999. That is covenant language.

  1000. That is the language

  1001. that comes from

  1002. the Abrahamic covenant

  1003. where God promised

  1004. to Abraham,

  1005. they will be,

1006. you will be my people,

1007. I will be your God

1008. and now he is saying

  1009. it to her

  1010. for the first time.

  1011. The resurrection

  1012. fulfills

  1013. all the covenant promises

  1014. of the Old Testament

1015. and what is he saying?

1016. Don't hold on to me

1017. because I have got to go

1018. prepare a place for you

1019. and you see what he is saying?

  1020. He said,

  1021. because the covenant

  1022. is fulfilled,

  1023. everything that is true

  1024. of me right now

  1025. physically,

  1026. resurrected from the dead

1027. is going to be yours as well

1028. so don't hold on to me.

  1029. I go and prepare a place

  1030. for you.

  1031. Now that means,

1032. and this is the last word,

  1033. the resurrection

1034. that has already taken place

  1035. in the past

  1036. in Jesus' life

  1037. means that your sins

  1038. are forgiven today,

  1039. that you,

1040. he defeated death and sin

  1041. and therefore you today

  1042. can be forgiven

1043. but it also has to point you forward

1044. to what is not yet

  1045. about the resurrection

  1046. and that is that

  1047. you still live

1048. in the veil of tears

1049. and so if you come today

  1050. and you say,

  1051. yeah and my body

  1052. is hurting today

1053. and my job is miserable

1054. and I've just lost somebody

  1055. and there's the,

  1056. we've got the diagnosis

1057. that it's not going to go away

  1058. and that's true

  1059. of all of us

1060. at different times in life.

  1061. It's coming, right?

1062. We're all in different places

  1063. of suffering today.

  1064. You've got to know

  1065. that the resurrection

  1066. is now

  1067. and not yet

  1068. and that everything

1069. that is true of him

  1070. physically

1071. is going to be true of you

1072. and so I just want to leave you

  1073. with these words.

  1074. Paul says,

  1075. therefore,

  1076. you say,

1077. but the pain in my life,

  1078. yes and the suffering

  1079. of this present age

  1080. is not worth comparing

  1081. to the glory

1082. that is to be revealed

1083. in the sons and daughters of God.

1084. We will look back one day

  1085. and say,

  1086. that was a faint,

  1087. it's just a faint memory,

  1088. the veil of tears,

1089. the life that I used to have

  1090. that was so hard.

1091. It was just a faint memory

1092. and today you can look

  1093. at every problem

1094. you have in your life

  1095. and say,

1096. the life that is to come for you

  1097. in Christ

  1098. is unimaginably wonderful.

  1099. And everything

  1100. that is truly good

1101. you will experience in him.

1102. Mary came to the garden

  1103. to find a corpse

  1104. and she left

  1105. with the gardener king

  1106. and that's the resurrection,

  1107. that's what it does.

  1108. The resurrection today

  1109. can find you weeping

  1110. at the tomb.

1111. It can find you weeping

  1112. in whatever it is

1113. that's brought you to that point

  1114. and it can change

1115. the direction of your life forever

1116. and give you true hope,

1117. hope in the time of fear

  1118. that we live in.

  1119. The good news,

  1120. this is good news,

  1121. it's his history,

1122. it has to reconfigure your life.

1123. So let it as we sing.

  1124. Let's pray.

  1125. Father,

  1126. we thank you

  1127. for the resurrection promise,

  1128. the hope,

  1129. and we come today

  1130. to experience hope.

1131. So we ask that now

1132. as we come to you

  1133. in singing

1134. that you would help us

1135. to see what a morning

  1136. gloriously bright

  1137. as the king

  1138. enters into Jerusalem.

  1139. And we ask

  1140. for that vision,

  1141. take away unreality

  1142. for us

1143. and show us reality today.

1144. We pray that in Christ's name.

  1145. Amen.

  1146. Amen.
