  1. We will be reading Jonah chapter 1, verse 1 to 16.

    Jonah 1:1–16

  2. And if you're following along in the Church Bible, you will find this on page 726.

  3. Jonah chapter 1, verses 1 to 16.

    Jonah 1:1–16

  4. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

  5. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it,

  6. for their evil has come up before me.

  7. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  8. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.

  9. So he paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish,

  10. away from the presence of the Lord.

  11. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea,

  12. and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

  13. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God.

  14. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them.

  15. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship,

  16. and had lain down.

  17. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us that we may not perish.

  18. And they said to one another,

  19. Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  20. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  21. Then they said to him,

  22. Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  23. What is your occupation, and where do you come from?

  24. What is your country, and of what people are you?

  25. And he said to them,

  26. I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,

  27. who made the sea and the dry land.

  28. Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him,

  29. What is this that you have done?

  30. For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord,

  31. because he had told them.

  32. Then they said to him,

  33. What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us?

  34. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

  35. He said to them,

  36. Pick me up and hurl me into the sea.

  37. Then the sea will quiet down for you.

  38. For I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

  39. Nevertheless, the men rode hard to get back to dry land,

  40. but they could not,

  41. for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

  42. Therefore they called out to the Lord,

  43. O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life,

  44. and lay not on us innocent blood.

  45. For you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  46. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,

  47. and the sea ceased from its raging.

  48. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly,

  49. and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  50. This is the word of God.

  51. Great. Thanks, Zoe, for reading.

  52. Well, once again, welcome.

  53. If you are new, my name is Kevin,

  54. and great to have you with us this morning.

  55. If you are visiting and I haven't met you,

  56. come and say hi to me afterwards.

  57. I'd love to meet you and get to know you a little bit,

  58. but great to have you with us this morning.

  59. Now, as you heard, we are spending the next few weeks

  60. looking at the book of the Bible, Jonah,

  61. this very well-known story.

  62. And, of course, many of us would have heard

  63. the story of Jonah and the big fish.

  64. And yet, in some ways, that's the challenge

  65. because we've probably, many of us have heard of it,

  66. and we're so familiar with it

  67. that we can miss its message.

  68. I find the story of Jonah actually one of the most challenging

  69. and provocative books in the Old Testament,

  70. books of the Bible.

  71. I find it deeply, deeply challenging.

  72. And so I'm looking forward to us diving into this together.

  73. We often reduce the story of Jonah

  74. just to a grumpy old man and a big fish,

  75. kind of like a kid's story tale.

  76. But actually, its message is very deep and profound.

  77. And if you know the story of Jonah,

  78. right at the end, the way the book ends

  79. is the last verse is God asks Jonah a question,

  80. and then that's the end of the book.

  81. And we don't know how Jonah answers.

  82. No answer is given.

  83. And the book ends on a cliffhanger,

  84. and the reason for that is because

  85. throughout the book of Jonah,

  86. Jonah's life is going to be asking us questions,

  87. asking lots of questions of us,

  88. and it's challenging us the whole way through.

  89. But we're going to get there in the coming weeks.

  90. Now, the big idea for today,

  91. some ways are simple,

  92. is don't run from God.

  93. Rather, trust Him.

  94. Fear Him.

  95. Even when His ways don't make sense to us.

  96. Because He's infinitely wiser,

  97. greater, and more gracious than you can imagine.

  98. Don't run from God.

  99. Trust Him.

  100. Fear Him.

  101. Even when His ways don't make sense to us.

  102. Because He's infinitely wiser,

  103. greater,

  104. and more gracious than we can imagine.

  105. So, let's dive in and look at it.

  106. We've got a couple of things

  107. we're going to see in this passage.

  108. So, firstly,

  109. let's look at Jonah's foolish run from the Lord.

  110. Jonah's foolish run.

  111. Now, the story begins with,

  112. very famously,

  113. with Jonah running from God.

  114. Right?

  115. Verse 1,

  116. the word of the Lord came to Jonah.

  117. Verse 3,

  118. But Jonah ran from the presence of the Lord.

  119. And this is well known to us,

  120. but it's shocking to anybody that reads the Bible for the first time.

  121. Why?

  122. Because a prophet is somebody who's meant to stand before God,

  123. stand in God's presence,

  124. represent God,

  125. speak for God,

  126. on behalf of God.

  127. But Jonah,

  128. rather than standing before God,

  129. is running from Him.

  130. Verse 3 tells us,

  131. twice,

  132. Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish

  133. from the presence of the Lord.

  134. Again,

  135. he paid the fare

  136. and went to Tarshish

  137. away from the presence of the Lord.

  138. Now,

  139. why would Jonah do this?

  140. This sounds like a very foolish thing to do.

  141. But actually,

  142. we should have a little bit of sympathy for Jonah.

  143. Maybe he shouldn't be so high and mighty.

  144. Because,

  145. what is the task

  146. that Jonah's being asked to do?

  147. Well,

  148. verse 2 tells us,

  149. look at what it says,

  150. Arise,

  151. go to Nineveh,

  152. that great city,

  153. call out against it,

  154. for their evil

  155. has come up before me.

  156. Now,

  157. in order to understand this,

  158. we should understand a little bit about Nineveh.

  159. Who were the Ninevites?

  160. Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria.

  161. Assyria was the world's superpower of the day.

  162. At the time,

  163. they kind of controlled the whole of the

  164. kind of known Middle Eastern world

  165. of that day and age.

  166. But the Assyrians were known

  167. as probably the most vicious,

  168. violent,

  169. and sadistic empire of the ancient world.

  170. They were extremely,

  171. extremely violent.

  172. Historians have described them

  173. as one of the most gory

  174. and blood-curling histories

  175. that we know of.

  176. One of the emperors,

  177. a guy called Shalmanessi III,

  178. he used to commission for artworks

  179. to be made throughout his palace

  180. and his empire.

  181. Stone reliefs would be carved

  182. and artworks made

  183. depicting people being tortured,

  184. decapitated,

  185. or dismembered.

  186. This is the artwork around his palace

  187. that he decorated his palace with

  188. and his empire.

  189. Assyrian soldiers would sometimes,

  190. in battle,

  191. they wouldn't kill their enemies,

  192. but they'd cut off their legs,

  193. cut off one of their arms,

  194. and leave one arm still in place

  195. so that they could shake the hand

  196. of their victims

  197. as they left them to bleed to death.

  198. Other accounts tell us of sometimes,

  199. one author describes the way that

  200. the Assyrians would force family members

  201. to march through the streets of the city

  202. with poles,

  203. with the decapitated heads

  204. of their loved ones,

  205. through the streets,

  206. parading their defeat.

  207. Other records have spoken about them

  208. skinning their enemies alive,

  209. throwing salt on the wounds,

  210. and then leaving them to dry

  211. and die in the sun.

  212. This is one of the cruelest,

  213. most violent empires

  214. of the ancient world,

  215. and what is Jonah being asked to do?

  216. Go to their streets

  217. and tell them that they are bad people

  218. and that they should stop their ways.

  219. One commentator said,

  220. this is like a rabbi

  221. standing in the streets of Berlin,

  222. Germany,

  223. in the 1940s,

  224. crying out against the Nazi empire.

  225. How long do you think

  226. he's going to last?

  227. And yet this is what God

  228. is asking Jonah to do.

  229. And so Jonah's response

  230. is to run.

  231. And so instead of going east

  232. to Nineveh,

  233. he gets on a ship

  234. to go west of the land,

  235. of the seas,

  236. to Tarshish,

  237. as far away as he can

  238. from Nineveh.

  239. But as the author wants us to see,

  240. Jonah is not just running

  241. away from Nineveh,

  242. he's running away from God.

  243. Twice the verse tells us,

  244. verse 3,

  245. Jonah rose to flee

  246. to Tarshish

  247. from the presence of the Lord.

  248. But of course,

  249. running doesn't solve

  250. Jonah's problems,

  251. does it?

  252. No more than running

  253. solves our problems.

  254. Jeremiah the prophet

  255. said this,

  256. Can a man hide himself

  257. in secret places

  258. that I cannot see him?

  259. Do I not fill

  260. heaven and earth,

  261. declares the Lord?

  262. Or think of the famous

  263. Psalm 139

  264. that Jonah probably

  265. would have known about.

  266. Psalm 139,

  267. David writes,

  268. O Lord,

  269. you have searched me

  270. and you know me.

  271. You know when I sit down

  272. and when I rise up.

  273. You search out my path

  274. and my lying down.

  275. You are acquainted

  276. with all of my ways.

  277. Where shall I go

  278. from your spirit?

  279. Where shall I flee

  280. from your presence?

  281. And yet despite all this,

  282. Jonah tries to run

  283. from the God

  284. that he claims

  285. to believe in.

  286. Now,

  287. before we move on

  288. to the story,

  289. three very brief implications,

  290. a quick implications

  291. for us is this.

  292. Firstly,

  293. if you are a follower

  294. of Jesus

  295. or if you're considering

  296. becoming a follower

  297. of Jesus,

  298. when God calls us,

  299. He calls us

  300. to difficult things.

  301. God often calls us

  302. to difficult things.

  303. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  304. said this,

  305. when God calls a man

  306. or woman to Himself,

  307. He bids Him

  308. to come and die,

  309. to lay down our lives,

  310. to pick up our cross

  311. and to follow Him,

  312. to die to our selfish dreams,

  313. to die to the idea

  314. of being our own Lord

  315. and King and Master,

  316. to die to the life

  317. of comfort

  318. and convenience

  319. and ease.

  320. Jesus' call

  321. to follow Him

  322. is not a call

  323. to comfort

  324. and convenience.

  325. It's a call

  326. to follow Him.

  327. And as we heard last week,

  328. where did Jesus go?

  329. He went to the cross.

  330. Jesus,

  331. when speaking to His disciples,

  332. He reveals Himself

  333. as the Messiah King

  334. and then His very next line is,

  335. If anyone would come after Me,

  336. let him deny himself,

  337. pick up His cross

  338. and follow Me.

  339. And friends,

  340. because we live

  341. in a therapeutic age,

  342. what that means is

  343. we tend to think

  344. that what feels good

  345. must be good

  346. or what feels right

  347. must be right

  348. and what feels uncomfortable

  349. or difficult

  350. or hard

  351. must be wrong

  352. and certainly not God's will.

  353. But Jonah reminds us,

  354. as does the whole of Scripture,

  355. that when God calls us,

  356. He calls us to difficult things.

  357. He calls us to live by faith,

  358. to trust Him,

  359. despite the difficulty

  360. to which He calls us.

  361. And that leads

  362. to the second implication,

  363. which is that God's call

  364. is not just that God

  365. wants to work through us,

  366. but God wants to work in us.

  367. When God calls us,

  368. He wants to change us.

  369. The story of Jonah,

  370. as we're going to see

  371. over the next couple of weeks,

  372. is God is going to change Jonah

  373. in the process.

  374. Jonah needs to hear

  375. the message of God's

  376. transforming and redeeming grace

  377. just as much

  378. as the Ninevites do himself.

  379. To Jonah's great surprise,

  380. God will work through him,

  381. but what the book of Jonah

  382. wants to show us

  383. is how much Jonah himself

  384. needs to change.

  385. When God calls us,

  386. He's also to call

  387. to transformation.

  388. Friends, isn't that true

  389. of all of us?

  390. When God calls you

  391. to serve or lead,

  392. we're not just called

  393. to carry His message,

  394. but to be changed

  395. by it ourselves.

  396. And then here's

  397. the third brief implication.

  398. In running from God's word,

  399. Jonah is running

  400. from God Himself.

  401. You notice verse 1 says,

  402. the word of the Lord

  403. came to Jonah.

  404. Jonah doesn't like the word,

  405. so he runs away.

  406. But what does verse 3 say?

  407. Jonah is running

  408. from God's presence.

  409. Throughout the Bible,

  410. we see these

  411. interconnected things.

  412. You can't reject God's word

  413. without rejecting God Himself.

  414. You cannot run away

  415. from God's command

  416. without also running away

  417. from relationship with Him.

  418. Jonah runs from God's word,

  419. and he ends up running away

  420. from the presence of the Lord.

  421. And so,

  422. Jonah's not convinced,

  423. and so he runs from God,

  424. which is a very foolish

  425. thing to do,

  426. because in running from God,

  427. Jonah runs into a storm.

  428. Look at verse 4 with me.

  429. It says,

  430. the Lord hurled

  431. a great wind upon the sea,

  432. and there was a mighty tempest

  433. on the sea,

  434. so that the ship

  435. threatened to break up.

  436. The mariners were afraid,

  437. and each cried out

  438. to his God.

  439. They hurled the cargo

  440. that was on the ship

  441. into the sea

  442. to lighten it.

  443. But Jonah had gone down

  444. into the inner parts

  445. of the ship,

  446. and laid down

  447. and was fast asleep.

  448. Friends,

  449. here we see,

  450. in a very vivid way,

  451. the foolishness of sin.

  452. And one of the lessons

  453. we want to see here

  454. is what Tim Keller says,

  455. that all sin

  456. has a storm

  457. attached to it.

  458. All sin

  459. has a storm

  460. attached to it.

  461. And the reason for this

  462. is actually

  463. quite intuitive.

  464. If you think about it,

  465. in any area of life,

  466. when we go against

  467. something's purpose

  468. or its design,

  469. that thing strikes

  470. back at you,

  471. right?

  472. If you are indifferent

  473. about your health,

  474. your health is going

  475. to strike back at you,

  476. right?

  477. You can't be indifferent

  478. about your health

  479. and your physical well-being

  480. and still live

  481. a healthy life

  482. and expect to be

  483. well and healthy.

  484. Friends,

  485. we can't be indifferent

  486. towards our financial lives

  487. and expect to be

  488. financially healthy.

  489. Friends,

  490. you can't take

  491. a relationship

  492. with your spouse

  493. for granted

  494. and expect a happy

  495. and healthy marriage.

  496. In the same ways,

  497. we can't take

  498. a relationship

  499. with the sovereign God

  500. for granted,

  501. be indifferent

  502. towards Him

  503. and expect to still

  504. flourish in the world

  505. that He's made

  506. and He's created.

  507. And so the God

  508. of all creation says,

  509. if you're indifferent

  510. and reject me,

  511. it does bite back.

  512. There's a storm

  513. attached to every sin.

  514. One of the literary features

  515. in the book of Jonah,

  516. Jonah is a literary

  517. masterpiece.

  518. It's unbelievable

  519. and I hope you get to

  520. enjoy it as you read it.

  521. But one of the literary

  522. features here

  523. that commentators

  524. often point out

  525. is that in this chapter

  526. it begins off

  527. with God saying,

  528. arise,

  529. go to Nineveh.

  530. Nineveh is in the north

  531. east of Jerusalem.

  532. Arise,

  533. go to Nineveh.

  534. And yet the story

  535. tells us that Jonah

  536. goes down,

  537. down,

  538. down,

  539. down to Joppa,

  540. down to a ship,

  541. down into the ship,

  542. down into the hell

  543. and ultimately

  544. down into the sea.

  545. And it's almost like

  546. the author is wanting

  547. us to see

  548. that Jonah's life

  549. is spiraling downhill

  550. as he runs away

  551. from God.

  552. Because this is how

  553. life in God's

  554. creation work.

  555. All sin has a storm

  556. attached to it.

  557. Now of course

  558. we need to be careful

  559. here because this

  560. doesn't mean that

  561. every time we are

  562. in a storm

  563. it's necessarily

  564. because of a sin.

  565. Life is sometimes

  566. hard.

  567. We are born

  568. into a difficult

  569. world.

  570. Life will,

  571. storms will come

  572. our way.

  573. We have to live

  574. by faith

  575. in the midst

  576. of hardship.

  577. Sometimes God

  578. calls us to

  579. difficult and

  580. challenging things

  581. and we feel

  582. like we've walked

  583. into a storm.

  584. And yet,

  585. that doesn't negate

  586. what the Bible

  587. clearly says,

  588. that while not

  589. all difficulties

  590. are a result

  591. of sin,

  592. all sin will

  593. bring us

  594. into immense

  595. difficulty.

  596. That running

  597. from God

  598. means running

  599. into a storm

  600. of our own

  601. making.

  602. And in Jonah's

  603. account here,

  604. the storm is

  605. dramatic and

  606. it's immediate.

  607. It's almost

  608. within a couple

  609. of hours the

  610. storm comes up.

  611. In our lives,

  612. often the storm

  613. is slow

  614. and we don't

  615. realize it.

  616. And Jonah here,

  617. it seems like he

  618. goes into the

  619. boat and goes

  620. to sleep.

  621. And while he's

  622. asleep,

  623. he's oblivious

  624. to the fact that

  625. a storm is

  626. brewing.

  627. It comes

  628. upon him.

  629. Isn't that so

  630. often like our

  631. lives?

  632. We run

  633. from God

  634. and before we

  635. realize it,

  636. we wake up

  637. and a storm

  638. is upon us.

  639. A storm

  640. of our own

  641. making.

  642. Jonah's foolish

  643. run from God.

  644. But also we see

  645. in this passage,

  646. Jonah's empty

  647. declaration,

  648. his hollow

  649. declaration.

  650. Now,

  651. we've seen Jonah's

  652. been running

  653. from God

  654. and a storm

  655. has come

  656. upon him.

  657. But why

  658. is that?

  659. We still haven't

  660. got to why.

  661. Now,

  662. as I said

  663. earlier,

  664. Jonah is a

  665. literary masterpiece.

  666. It's beautifully

  667. constructed.

  668. And I want you

  669. to look at

  670. the slide,

  671. the structure

  672. of Jonah

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  673. chapter 1.

  674. This is called

  675. a chiasm

  676. where the first

  677. sentence and the

  678. last sentence

  679. mirror each

  680. other and the

  681. second part and

  682. the second last

  683. part mirror each

  684. other.

  685. And it mirrors

  686. in a kind of

  687. arrow-shaped

  688. direction.

  689. And then the

  690. central part of

  691. the chapter is

  692. what the author

  693. wants us to take

  694. note of.

  695. This is a

  696. literary device

  697. that writers in

  698. the ancient world

  699. used.

  700. And here,

  701. there's the

  702. beautiful chiasm

  703. in Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  704. So look at

  705. verse 4,

  706. the Lord hurls a

  707. storm in the sea.

  708. Verse 15,

  709. the sailors hurl

  710. Jonah into the

  711. sea.

  712. In verse 5,

  713. the sailors pray

  714. and act.

  715. In verse 13 and

  716. 14,

  717. the sailors act

  718. and pray.

  719. In verse 6,

  720. the sailors

  721. question Jonah.

  722. In verse 10,

  723. the sailors

  724. question Jonah again.

  725. So there's this

  726. mirroring that

  727. happens.

  728. And right in the

  729. center,

  730. in verse 9,

  731. is Jonah's words.

  732. And the author

  733. has structured it

  734. like this because

  735. the author wants

  736. us to take note

  737. of Jonah's words.

  738. What he says here.

  739. The sailors,

  740. look at verse 9,

  741. the sailors try to

  742. save themselves,

  743. they can't,

  744. they draw lots and

  745. they find out Jonah's

  746. the one at fault.

  747. And so they ask him

  748. what he's done.

  749. They say,

  750. tell us on whose

  751. account has this

  752. evil come?

  753. What is your

  754. occupation?

  755. Where do you

  756. come from?

  757. What is your

  758. country?

  759. What people are

  760. you?

  761. And verse 9 is

  762. the key.

  763. Jonah says,

  764. I am a Hebrew.

  765. I fear the Lord,

  766. the God of heaven,

  767. who made the sea

  768. and the dry land.

  769. Now,

  770. as we're going to

  771. see in coming

  772. weeks,

  773. the book of Jonah

  774. is full of irony.

  775. Almost every

  776. chapter,

  777. there are these

  778. amazing ironies.

  779. God calls Jonah

  780. to rise,

  781. and he goes down,

  782. down,

  783. down.

  784. God tells Jonah

  785. to go east,

  786. and he goes west.

  787. God tells Jonah

  788. to tell the

  789. Ninevites to repent,

  790. they do,

  791. and then he's

  792. bit and angry

  793. that they listen

  794. to him.

  795. There are all

  796. these ironies,

  797. right?

  798. But here in

  799. verse 9,

  800. is a dramatic

  801. irony once

  802. again.

  803. Jonah gives

  804. this remarkable

  805. declaration of

  806. his faith,

  807. and yet it's

  808. deeply ironic,

  809. and for two

  810. reasons.

  811. Look at this.

  812. Firstly,

  813. he says,

  814. I'm a follower

  815. of the Lord,

  816. Yahweh,

  817. the God of

  818. heaven,

  819. the maker of

  820. the sea and

  821. the dry land.

  822. Jonah says

  823. that he follows

  824. the God who is

  825. sovereign over

  826. everything.

  827. There is no

  828. part of creation

  829. over which God

  830. is not sovereign

  831. and in charge,

  832. and yet where is

  833. Jonah running

  834. away?

  835. Out of the

  836. land into the

  837. sea,

  838. right?

  839. In the ancient

  840. world,

  841. all nations

  842. believed in a

  843. buffet of

  844. gods.

  845. So there's

  846. the God of

  847. the sea,

  848. the God of

  849. the land,

  850. the God of

  851. the crops,

  852. the God of

  853. the stars,

  854. the God of

  855. the weather,

  856. and you would

  857. worship the

  858. different gods.

  859. And Jonah

  860. says,

  861. that's not my

  862. God.

  863. The God I

  864. believe in is

  865. the Lord of

  866. everything,

  867. the maker of

  868. heaven and

  869. earth,

  870. the land and

  871. the sea,

  872. everything in it.

  873. Jonah says,

  874. my God is the

  875. creator and

  876. sustainer of

  877. everyone and

  878. everything.

  879. He is eternal,

  880. infinite,

  881. and unchangeable,

  882. and his power and

  883. perfection,

  884. his goodness and

  885. grace,

  886. his justice,

  887. mercy,

  888. and truth.

  889. Does that sound

  890. familiar?

  891. That's the

  892. catechism we

  893. said earlier.

  894. Okay?

  895. So Jonah's

  896. confessing,

  897. my God is

  898. Lord of

  899. everything,

  900. and yet when

  901. God says,

  902. go here,

  903. he says,

  904. I think I'm

  905. going to run

  906. away by the

  907. sea and God

  908. won't find

  909. me.

  910. Jonah makes

  911. a declaration of

  912. his faith,

  913. but he doesn't

  914. really believe it,

  915. does it?

  916. His declaration

  917. is actually

  918. empty.

  919. It's hollow.

  920. In his heart

  921. of hearts,

  922. he doesn't

  923. believe what

  924. he professes

  925. with his

  926. mouth.

  927. Jonah says

  928. he believes

  929. in the

  930. sovereign God,

  931. but he's

  932. running away

  933. from him.

  934. But here's

  935. the second

  936. irony.

  937. In many

  938. ways,

  939. this is the

  940. heart of

  941. chapter one,

  942. that while

  943. Jonah confesses

  944. to fearing

  945. God,

  946. it's actually

  947. the unbelieving

  948. sailors who

  949. truly fear God

  950. and fear him

  951. more than

  952. Jonah.

  953. Jonah says

  954. in verse

  955. nine,

  956. I am a

  957. Hebrew.

  958. I fear

  959. the God

  960. of all

  961. creation.

  962. But look

  963. at verse

  964. 14 with

  965. me.

  966. Jonah tells

  967. him that

  968. the storm

  969. is because

  970. of him.

  971. The only

  972. way to

  973. calm the

  974. storm is

  975. to hurl

  976. them in

  977. the sea.

  978. Verse

  979. 14,

  980. then they

  981. called out

  982. to the

  983. Lord and

  984. they said,

  985. O Lord,

  986. do not let

  987. us perish

  988. for this

  989. man's

  990. life.

  991. Lay not

  992. on us

  993. innocent

  994. blood,

  995. for you,

  996. O Lord,

  997. have done

  998. as you

  999. pleased.

  1000. Verse

  1001. 16,

  1002. they throw

  1003. him into

  1004. the sea.

  1005. Then the

  1006. men feared

  1007. the Lord

  1008. exceedingly.

  1009. Literally,

  1010. it says,

  1011. they feared

  1012. with great

  1013. fear.

  1014. And they

  1015. offered

  1016. sacrifices to

  1017. the Lord

  1018. and they

  1019. made vows.

  1020. Friends,

  1021. here we get to

  1022. the heart of

  1023. Jonah's

  1024. problem,

  1025. but also the

  1026. heart of

  1027. our problem.

  1028. It's the

  1029. same reason

  1030. why we run

  1031. from the

  1032. Lord.

  1033. Jonah does

  1034. not fear the

  1035. Lord anything

  1036. like what he

  1037. claims to.

  1038. He does not

  1039. believe that the

  1040. sovereign God is

  1041. actually sovereign

  1042. at all.

  1043. Friends,

  1044. if you're a

  1045. Christian this

  1046. morning,

  1047. would you say

  1048. that you fear

  1049. God?

  1050. What might that

  1051. look like in

  1052. your life?

  1053. What does it

  1054. mean to fear

  1055. God?

  1056. One of the

  1057. best descriptions

  1058. is a quote

  1059. by the name of

  1060. a guy by the

  1061. name of Martin

  1062. Buber.

  1063. Listen to what he

  1064. says here.

  1065. Martin Buber was

  1066. an Austrian

  1067. philosopher.

  1068. He says this,

  1069. to fear God

  1070. does not mean to

  1071. be afraid of

  1072. God,

  1073. but that

  1074. trembling,

  1075. one is aware

  1076. of his

  1077. incomprehensibility.

  1078. It is the

  1079. dark gate

  1080. through which

  1081. one must

  1082. pass if he

  1083. is to enter

  1084. into the

  1085. love of

  1086. God.

  1087. He who

  1088. wishes to

  1089. avoid passing

  1090. through this

  1091. gate,

  1092. who begins to

  1093. provide or

  1094. create for

  1095. himself a

  1096. safe and

  1097. comprehensible

  1098. God,

  1099. constructed like

  1100. this and not

  1101. otherwise,

  1102. runs the risk

  1103. of having to

  1104. despair of

  1105. God in view

  1106. of the realities

  1107. of life or

  1108. falling into

  1109. inner falsehood.

  1110. Only through

  1111. the fear of

  1112. God does one

  1113. enter so deep

  1114. into the love

  1115. of God that

  1116. he cannot

  1117. again be

  1118. cast out

  1119. of it.

  1120. That's pretty

  1121. wordy,

  1122. but you see

  1123. what Martin

  1124. Buber is

  1125. saying?

  1126. He's saying

  1127. to fear

  1128. God is not

  1129. just a

  1130. creed or

  1131. a confession,

  1132. it's to

  1133. come face

  1134. to face

  1135. with the

  1136. incomprehensibility,

  1137. the mystery

  1138. of the God

  1139. that cannot

  1140. be managed,

  1141. manipulated,

  1142. contained,

  1143. or controlled.

  1144. And having

  1145. come face

  1146. to face

  1147. to him,

  1148. accepting

  1149. him on

  1150. his terms,

  1151. we find

  1152. that we

  1153. enter into

  1154. his love.

  1155. It's the

  1156. only way to

  1157. truly know

  1158. him.

  1159. It's the

  1160. only way to

  1161. truly experience

  1162. him,

  1163. to encounter

  1164. him,

  1165. to willingly

  1166. come to

  1167. the scary

  1168. yet liberating

  1169. realization

  1170. that he is

  1171. God and

  1172. we are not.

  1173. And entering

  1174. into that

  1175. counterintuitively

  1176. is the way

  1177. of entering

  1178. into his

  1179. love,

  1180. the way of

  1181. entering into

  1182. relationship,

  1183. the way of

  1184. entering into

  1185. friendship.

  1186. One of my

  1187. favorite verses

  1188. in the Bible,

  1189. Psalm 25,

  1190. says this,

  1191. the friendship

  1192. of the

  1193. Lord is

  1194. for those

  1195. who fear

  1196. him.

  1197. The

  1198. friendship

  1199. of the

  1200. Lord is

  1201. for those

  1202. who fear

  1203. him.

  1204. Friends,

  1205. those who

  1206. come to

  1207. him and

  1208. say,

  1209. you are

  1210. God and

  1211. I am

  1212. not,

  1213. are drawn

  1214. through this

  1215. dark gate

  1216. into the

  1217. incomprehensibility

  1218. of God and

  1219. discover on the

  1220. other side,

  1221. there is a

  1222. God who

  1223. loves us

  1224. and who

  1225. wants to

  1226. know us

  1227. and extend

  1228. the friendship

  1229. of the

  1230. Lord for

  1231. him.

  1232. And here,

  1233. friends,

  1234. is the

  1235. difficult but

  1236. wonderful

  1237. teaching of

  1238. the fear

  1239. of God,

  1240. that the

  1241. God that

  1242. we've come

  1243. to sing

  1244. and worship

  1245. and pray

  1246. to and

  1247. listen to

  1248. this morning

  1249. is not

  1250. containable.

  1251. He is not

  1252. managed.

  1253. He is not

  1254. controlled.

  1255. He is not

  1256. manipulated.

  1257. He is awesome

  1258. and awful

  1259. and terrifying

  1260. and dangerous

  1261. and unsafe

  1262. and yet

  1263. glorious and

  1264. he makes

  1265. himself known

  1266. and he draws

  1267. us into

  1268. his love.

  1269. Friends,

  1270. is there

  1271. any part of

  1272. your life

  1273. you've been

  1274. running away

  1275. from this

  1276. God?

  1277. Can you

  1278. see how

  1279. foolish that

  1280. is?

  1281. Not only

  1282. for Jonah,

  1283. but for all

  1284. of us who

  1285. like Jonah,

  1286. think that

  1287. we can

  1288. control God

  1289. and run

  1290. away from

  1291. him.

  1292. And friends,

  1293. there are

  1294. many ways

  1295. to run

  1296. away from

  1297. God.

  1298. One is

  1299. obviously

  1300. rebellious,

  1301. to run

  1302. as far

  1303. away as

  1304. you can

  1305. and live

  1306. contrary

  1307. to him.

  1308. But another

  1309. way to run

  1310. away from

  1311. God is to

  1312. try and be

  1313. good and

  1314. control him

  1315. and manipulate

  1316. him through

  1317. our good

  1318. deeds and

  1319. our devotion.

  1320. Another

  1321. way to run

  1322. away from

  1323. God is to

  1324. externally look

  1325. like we've

  1326. got it all

  1327. together,

  1328. but to keep

  1329. a secret part

  1330. of our life

  1331. hidden that

  1332. we keep to

  1333. ourselves,

  1334. an area that

  1335. we don't want

  1336. God to touch.

  1337. Just this week,

  1338. I heard the news

  1339. of a very famous,

  1340. very well-respected

  1341. Christian leader

  1342. who just this week

  1343. admitted to an

  1344. eight-year affair

  1345. with another married

  1346. woman,

  1347. all while writing

  1348. Christian books,

  1349. speaking at

  1350. Christian churches,

  1351. speaking at

  1352. Christian conferences,

  1353. going about his

  1354. Christian life,

  1355. and yet there

  1356. was a secret

  1357. part of his

  1358. life that was

  1359. running away

  1360. from God that

  1361. he would not

  1362. let God touch.

  1363. And friends,

  1364. as the news

  1365. broke this week,

  1366. the storm that

  1367. has erupted in

  1368. his life,

  1369. in his family,

  1370. in his marriage,

  1371. is unfathomable.

  1372. For eight years,

  1373. no one knew a

  1374. thing.

  1375. For eight years,

  1376. going to church,

  1377. speaking at

  1378. churches,

  1379. writing books,

  1380. and having an

  1381. empty profession

  1382. declaration of faith,

  1383. all while running

  1384. from God in one

  1385. of the most

  1386. important areas

  1387. of his life.

  1388. Friends,

  1389. are there any

  1390. areas of our

  1391. life where we

  1392. are running

  1393. from God?

  1394. This is the

  1395. question I've

  1396. been asking

  1397. myself this

  1398. week.

  1399. God,

  1400. are there any

  1401. areas of my

  1402. life that I'm

  1403. keeping off

  1404. from you?

  1405. God,

  1406. come in your

  1407. incomprehensible,

  1408. unsafe,

  1409. awesome area.

  1410. Come and have

  1411. your way.

  1412. As we come to

  1413. a close,

  1414. we see here

  1415. not only Jonah's

  1416. foolish run,

  1417. Jonah's empty

  1418. declaration,

  1419. but also Jonah's

  1420. only hope.

  1421. The message

  1422. of this

  1423. chapter is

  1424. don't run

  1425. from God,

  1426. fear him,

  1427. trust him,

  1428. even when you

  1429. can't understand

  1430. his ways and

  1431. his declarations

  1432. don't make sense

  1433. to you.

  1434. Trust him.

  1435. But the reality

  1436. is that there's

  1437. probably a fair

  1438. bit of Jonah

  1439. inside of all

  1440. of us,

  1441. probably more

  1442. than we like

  1443. to admit,

  1444. more than we

  1445. like to realize.

  1446. And so friends,

  1447. where does Jonah

  1448. find hope?

  1449. Where do I

  1450. find hope?

  1451. Where do we

  1452. find hope?

  1453. Ironically,

  1454. it's in the

  1455. message that Jonah

  1456. was running

  1457. away from.

  1458. Because look

  1459. at verse 2

  1460. with me.

  1461. If you've got

  1462. your Bible,

  1463. what does

  1464. verse 2

  1465. say?

  1466. God says to

  1467. Jonah,

  1468. arise,

  1469. go to Nineveh,

  1470. that great city,

  1471. and call out

  1472. against it,

  1473. for their evil

  1474. has come up

  1475. before me.

  1476. Why would God

  1477. send Jonah

  1478. to Nineveh

  1479. to tell them

  1480. about their evil?

  1481. If God just

  1482. wants to smite

  1483. them,

  1484. why doesn't he

  1485. just smite

  1486. them?

  1487. Why doesn't he

  1488. just destroy

  1489. them?

  1490. Why would God

  1491. send a prophet

  1492. to tell

  1493. them that

  1494. the Lord

  1495. has seen

  1496. their evil?

  1497. Friends,

  1498. the only reason

  1499. why God

  1500. would do

  1501. this is if

  1502. there is a

  1503. chance,

  1504. a possibility,

  1505. that they

  1506. can turn

  1507. from their

  1508. ways and

  1509. find healing

  1510. and find

  1511. redemption.

  1512. Only if

  1513. there's a

  1514. chance of

  1515. forgiveness.

  1516. Friends,

  1517. why would God

  1518. send a prophet

  1519. to Assyria,

  1520. whose wicked

  1521. and godless

  1522. people don't

  1523. fear God

  1524. at all?

  1525. Because this

  1526. God is so

  1527. unlike us.

  1528. And if there

  1529. is any hope

  1530. for them,

  1531. there is hope

  1532. for us.

  1533. Friends,

  1534. contained within

  1535. the message

  1536. that Jonah

  1537. was meant

  1538. to take

  1539. the Assyrians

  1540. was the

  1541. message that

  1542. Jonah himself

  1543. needed to

  1544. hear,

  1545. which is that

  1546. the sovereign

  1547. God,

  1548. the Lord of

  1549. heaven and

  1550. earth,

  1551. the land and

  1552. seas,

  1553. the God who

  1554. can turn

  1555. godless

  1556. women around

  1557. and give

  1558. them a second

  1559. chance.

  1560. The Bible

  1561. says in

  1562. Isaiah 53

  1563. that we all

  1564. have gone

  1565. astray.

  1566. We have all

  1567. turned and

  1568. gone our own

  1569. way,

  1570. which means,

  1571. friends,

  1572. that there is

  1573. more of Jonah

  1574. inside of us

  1575. that we realize.

  1576. But just

  1577. like God

  1578. sent a man

  1579. with a message

  1580. to Nineveh,

  1581. so God

  1582. sent a man

  1583. with a message

  1584. to us.

  1585. A message

  1586. about our

  1587. sin,

  1588. a message

  1589. about evil,

  1590. and a message

  1591. about a way

  1592. to find peace

  1593. and redemption.

  1594. Friends,

  1595. all sin

  1596. will be

  1597. punished.

  1598. All sin

  1599. will meet

  1600. justice.

  1601. It will either

  1602. meet justice

  1603. on that last

  1604. day,

  1605. or it will

  1606. meet justice

  1607. that Jesus

  1608. paid on the

  1609. cross.

  1610. Like Jonah,

  1611. Jesus'

  1612. calling was

  1613. extremely

  1614. dangerous,

  1615. going to

  1616. a dangerous

  1617. and wicked

  1618. people who

  1619. did not

  1620. want to

  1621. receive his

  1622. message.

  1623. Jonah probably

  1624. thought that

  1625. if he went

  1626. to Nineveh,

  1627. he'd be

  1628. arrested,

  1629. killed,

  1630. and put to

  1631. death.

  1632. Jesus came

  1633. to us knowing

  1634. that that

  1635. would happen

  1636. to him.

  1637. Friends,

  1638. unlike Jonah,

  1639. Jesus didn't

  1640. run away.

  1641. Jesus didn't

  1642. flee.

  1643. Jesus came

  1644. to us and

  1645. he went to

  1646. the cross and

  1647. he entered

  1648. into the storm

  1649. of God's wrath

  1650. and judgment,

  1651. the ultimate

  1652. storm,

  1653. the storm

  1654. that our

  1655. sin has

  1656. generated,

  1657. the storm

  1658. of our

  1659. evil and

  1660. rebellion.

  1661. Jesus went

  1662. into that

  1663. storm so

  1664. that you

  1665. and I

  1666. don't need

  1667. to die,

  1668. that he

  1669. can pull

  1670. us out

  1671. of the

  1672. storm of

  1673. our sin

  1674. and our

  1675. rebellion

  1676. and give

  1677. us new

  1678. life.

  1679. Friends,

  1680. we're going

  1681. to see

  1682. God wants

  1683. to rescue

  1684. pagan Nineveh,

  1685. but before

  1686. he gets

  1687. to do that,

  1688. he has

  1689. to rescue

  1690. his

  1691. prodigal

  1692. prophet.

  1693. Friends,

  1694. maybe today

  1695. God wants

  1696. to rescue

  1697. you prodigal

  1698. sons and

  1699. daughters like

  1700. me,

  1701. like you.

  1702. Friends,

  1703. are you running

  1704. from God?

  1705. Is there any

  1706. area of your

  1707. life that you've

  1708. kept off from

  1709. God and you

  1710. don't want

  1711. God's word

  1712. to come

  1713. there?

  1714. By running

  1715. from God's

  1716. word,

  1717. you're running

  1718. from God's

  1719. presence.

  1720. You're running

  1721. from God

  1722. himself.

  1723. Friends,

  1724. this is the

  1725. God that you're

  1726. running from,

  1727. the one who's

  1728. perfectly obedient,

  1729. perfectly faithful,

  1730. perfectly just,

  1731. perfect in love,

  1732. the God who

  1733. came to you

  1734. and for you

  1735. to rescue

  1736. you and save

  1737. you.

  1738. He,

  1739. this gracious

  1740. God,

  1741. is the one

  1742. that we run

  1743. from.

  1744. Friends,

  1745. are there any

  1746. areas of our

  1747. lives we're

  1748. trying to avoid

  1749. his sovereign

  1750. rule,

  1751. shouting out

  1752. his voice?

  1753. How's that

  1754. working for

  1755. you?

  1756. Don't run

  1757. from him.

  1758. Don't flee

  1759. from him.

  1760. Bow down and

  1761. fear him.

  1762. Trust him and

  1763. obey him.

  1764. Surrender to

  1765. his sovereign

  1766. rule,

  1767. even when it's

  1768. difficult and it

  1769. doesn't make

  1770. sense.

  1771. Bow down before

  1772. the one that you

  1773. cannot comprehend,

  1774. the one you

  1775. cannot manage,

  1776. the one you

  1777. cannot contain,

  1778. the one you

  1779. cannot control,

  1780. the one you

  1781. cannot outrun.

  1782. Enter trembling

  1783. into his

  1784. incomprehensibility

  1785. and enter into

  1786. his love.

  1787. The God of all

  1788. creation could have

  1789. grace and mercy on

  1790. the people of

  1791. Nineveh, on the

  1792. sailors.

  1793. This God can have

  1794. grace and mercy for

  1795. people like you and

  1796. me.

  1797. Let's come to him

  1798. in prayer now.

  1799. Lord Jesus,

  1800. we are deeply

  1801. challenged by the

  1802. life of Jonah

  1803. Jonah because we

  1804. see so much of

  1805. Jonah in us.

  1806. God have mercy on

  1807. us, we pray.

1808. God, many of us in

  1809. this room have

  1810. discovered your

  1811. mercy.

1812. Some of us maybe a

  1813. few weeks and

  1814. months ago, some of

  1815. us many years ago,

1816. some of us, God, are

  1817. still on the journey

  1818. towards discovering

  1819. it.

  1820. Lord, I pray for

  1821. every single one of

1822. us and I pray, God,

  1823. start with me.

  1824. Start with me.

  1825. God, won't you

  1826. break into the

  1827. areas of my life

  1828. where I don't want

  1829. you to be there,

1830. where I want to run

  1831. from your voice and

  1832. run from your

  1833. command.

  1834. God, let your

  1835. incomprehensible

  1836. power but also

  1837. love break in and

  1838. let me discover your

  1839. grace.

  1840. Jesus, we need you.

  1841. I need you.

  1842. This city needs you.

  1843. Come and show us

  1844. yourself, we pray.

  1845. In your great and

  1846. wonderful name,

  1847. amen.

  1848. Amen.
