  1. I'm going to invite one of our elders, Hamish Alexander, to come and to read to us from the Scriptures from 2 Corinthians chapter 12.

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  2. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise.

  3. Whether in the body or out of the body, I do not know.

  4. God knows.

  5. And he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.

  6. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses.

  7. Though if it should be wished to boast, I would not be as a fool, for I would be speaking the truth.

  8. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.

  9. So to keep me from becoming conceited, because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn has given me in the flesh.

  10. A messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being conceited.

  11. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.

  12. But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  13. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  14. For the sake of Christ then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.

  15. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  16. Amen.

  17. Amen.

  18. It's great to be with you this morning.

  19. A little disorienting being up high like this.

  20. I was talking with someone on the way in.

  21. It seems like preaching from down there is more of a Corey problem.

  22. Maybe I should be down there since I'm a little taller.

  23. But, you know, speaking of which, we're talking today about power and weakness.

  24. And it's amazing how, like, the lengths that we will go to to avoid weakness or avoiding appearing weak.

  25. For instance, we went to a movie yesterday at the cinema, and there was a time where I almost fell asleep.

  26. And, you know, that person who can't admit that they fell asleep during the cinema or whatever,

  27. it's like, they're trying to deny their weakness, right?

  28. Or maybe it's trying to cover up a mistake or telling a half-truth.

  29. Or maybe you've been in the gym and haven't been able to complete a set like you thought you would.

  30. And you got up and you were, like, looking around to see if anyone noticed that you weren't actually as strong as you thought you were.

  31. Or maybe you've even seen someone on the football pitch faking an injury in order to excuse a failure that has happened.

  32. And just recently, we were in Greece with some friends, and Kelly handed me a tin of beans to open up.

  33. She's like, I can't get this open. Can you open it up?

  34. And I'm like, I can't get it open.

  35. So we handed it to our friend, and she opened it right up.

  36. And, of course, I said, I must have loosened it for you, right?

  37. Because we don't like to appear weak.

  38. The message that we pick up early in life is weakness is bad.

  39. I can't show my weakness.

  40. I must hide it.

  41. So we will appeal to our strengths in order to prove ourselves or our trustworthiness or our dependability.

  42. And which is actually proving your strength is actually the passage or the context for our passage today in 2 Corinthians.

  43. The theme of the whole letter of 2 Corinthians is that through Paul's weakness and suffering,

  44. the believers there have been comforted, and the gospel has been spread.

  45. However, there were some false apostles that had come through,

  46. and they were claiming to be superior to Paul and why you should listen to them instead of Paul.

  47. So they're boasting in how bold they are, how much authority they have, how gifted they are,

  48. how they should be respected.

  49. And Paul sarcastically calls them the super apostles.

  50. He refers to them as that in a couple of verses.

  51. So when Paul's coming to this passage, and I don't know if you picked up on it,

  52. but there were a few times he talked about boasting,

  53. about boasting in the Lord or boasting in strengths or boasting in weaknesses.

  54. And what he's saying as he's coming to the passage, he's like,

  55. it's foolish that I should have to do this.

  56. Like, I really don't like the thought of boasting.

  57. It's ridiculous that I'm having to go there.

  58. But if we're going to talk about who can boast, I'm going to be honest with you,

  59. and I will speak plainly with you.

  60. And he goes on and describes an event.

  61. And at first he says, a man in Christ.

  62. He didn't say it was himself until later on.

  63. But he goes on to describe an event where he was called up into the presence of God.

  64. This happened about 14 years earlier before Paul had any influence in the church.

  65. And so he's kind of like a nobody at this point when it happened,

  66. but he also hasn't spoken to people about it.

  67. But ultimately, this event, instead of pushing him into an arrogance or trying to claim,

  68. hey, I've been in the presence of God.

  69. Look how much authority I have as a prophet or whatever.

  70. Instead, he keeps it to himself and comes to our passage and starts talking about how this actually pushed him into weakness.

  71. So this morning, what we're going to talk about is the power of weakness.

  72. And since Corey's not here, and I thought I would honor him by having three points.

  73. The first point is we can't avoid weakness.

  74. The second point is we shouldn't try to avoid weakness.

  75. And the third point is we must embrace weakness.

  76. And you may be like, those sound very similar.

  77. They are.

  78. But let's dive in.

  79. The first thing, we can't avoid weakness.

  80. One of the things that we understand from reading the whole of Scripture

  81. is that we were actually created to be dependent on God and interdependent with each other.

  82. So from the very beginning, we lacked strength and ability to do everything on our own.

  83. It was God's intention as his creation for us to be in a state of dependence.

  84. In fact, in Genesis 2, verse 18, we have that verse we've probably all heard.

    Genesis 2:18

  85. It says,

  86. Then the Lord God said,

  87. It is not good that the man should be alone.

  88. I will make a helper fit for him.

  89. This word helper actually means one who supplies strength

  90. in the area that is lacking in the one that is helped.

  91. In other words, Adam needed help right away.

  92. And so God created someone who would compliment him

  93. that they would be interdependent with one another.

  94. So weakness actually comes before the fall.

  95. Weakness is not sinful or necessarily a result of sin.

  96. That dependence on God and interdependence with one another

  97. was meant from the beginning.

  98. And if we think about weakness,

  99. we can imagine some scenarios where good things come from weakness.

  100. I mentioned working out in the gym.

  101. If you work out in the gym,

  102. you may know that reaching the point of failure,

  103. is the way they talk about it,

  104. is when the real work is beginning to happen,

  105. when muscle is being built.

  106. But it comes after facing weakness.

  107. I mentioned earlier,

  108. but in this letter,

  109. Paul is talking about that it's our weakness

  110. that allowed us to be comforted by God.

  111. This is chapter one.

  112. And then since we were comforted by God,

  113. we can then comfort one another.

  114. So through weakness,

  115. God uses us to minister to one another.

  116. And as we know,

  117. the heart of the Bible's message

  118. has to do with weakness.

  119. How Christ let go of his authority,

  120. of his glory,

  121. and embraced weakness to become a man

  122. so that he could die for our sins.

  123. He rejected power

  124. and became the Lamb of God

  125. so that we could have life.

  126. It's literally how we become a follower of Christ.

  127. Romans 5, 6 says,

  128. for while we were still weak,

  129. at the right time,

  130. Christ died for the ungodly.

  131. A great hymn that we sing sometimes,

  132. Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.

  133. It says,

  134. all the fitness he requires

  135. is to feel your need of him.

  136. It is in weakness that we find life.

  137. It is in weakness that we find strength.

  138. We see that throughout the whole of the Bible.

  139. But yet,

  140. we still try to avoid weakness.

  141. So the first point,

  142. we can't avoid weakness.

  143. The second point,

  144. we shouldn't try to avoid weakness.

  145. Again,

  146. this is very similar,

  147. but if you look throughout

  148. all of redemption history,

  149. you see how God has chosen the weak things

  150. in order to accomplish his purposes

  151. and to show his strength.

  152. God usually didn't choose

  153. the big powerful person

  154. or the big powerful tribe,

  155. country, nation.

  156. In fact,

  157. when he says he chose Israel

  158. is because they were least

  159. among all the nations.

  160. Whether it was Abraham,

  161. Jacob,

  162. Moses,

  163. whoever,

  164. God was working through weakness.

  165. We know stories of Gideon

  166. where in fighting the Midianites,

  167. God kind of trimmed down the army

  168. from 32,000 to 300

  169. so that God's perfect strength

  170. could be made known.

  171. We see in David and Goliath,

  172. that famous story we all know,

  173. that David battles,

  174. battles a battle-tested,

  175. hardened giant.

  176. And he says,

  177. this battle belongs to the Lord

  178. and defeats him with a sling.

  179. Obviously,

  180. we've mentioned this,

  181. but the ultimate example

  182. of not avoiding weakness

  183. was Jesus,

  184. where he says in Matthew 20,

    Matthew 20:26–28

  185. verses 26-28,

  186. it shall not be so among you,

  187. but whoever would be great among you

  188. must be your servant,

  189. and whoever would be first among you

  190. must be your slave.

  191. Even the Son of Man

  192. came not to be served,

  193. but to serve,

  194. and to give his life

  195. as a ransom for many.

  196. That's one of the themes

  197. of Jesus' message on earth

  198. was, hey,

  199. as I have served you,

  200. so you must serve one another.

  201. You must let go

  202. of what you think

  203. is your strength

  204. in order to follow me.

  205. And then Paul says

  206. in the next chapter

  207. of the book

  208. that we're looking at,

  209. chapter 13,

  210. verse 4,

  211. that Christ was crucified

  212. in weakness,

  213. but lives by the power of God.

  214. This is a theme

  215. that we see

  216. throughout the whole Bible.

  217. We know this.

  218. I'm not telling you

  219. anything new

  220. if you've grown up in church

  221. or familiar at all

  222. with Scripture,

  223. but yet we still

  224. try to avoid weakness.

  225. So we shouldn't try

  226. to avoid weakness.

  227. And that leads

  228. to the third point,

  229. and this is where

  230. we'll camp out,

  231. is we must embrace weakness.

  232. If it's true

  233. that we are created dependent,

  234. we're going to be weak,

  235. why is it that we spend

  236. so much time,

  237. so much energy,

  238. so much thought,

  239. avoiding weakness.

  240. And now,

  241. I'm not advocating

  242. that you should go

  243. back to your CV

  244. and start, you know,

  245. trying to demonstrate

  246. to a potential employer

  247. of how weak

  248. and undependable you are,

  249. anything like that.

  250. I'm not saying

  251. we glorify weakness

  252. so that it's like,

  253. man, being weak

  254. is the best, you know.

  255. I'm not saying

  256. anything like that.

  257. But what I'm saying is,

  258. it is God's intention

  259. for us to understand

  260. how to live

  261. from His strength

  262. through our weakness.

  263. So, let's look

  264. at our passage today.

  265. In verse 7,

  266. He says,

  267. to keep me

  268. from being conceited

  269. because of the surpassing

  270. greatness of the revelations.

  271. He actually says this twice,

  272. to keep me

  273. from being conceited.

  274. And I think we just need,

  275. because He repeats this,

  276. I think we need to stop

  277. really quickly

  278. and just understand

  279. and acknowledge

  280. there is a reality

  281. where knowledge about Jesus

  282. or an experience with Him

  283. might lead us

  284. to arrogance,

  285. to pride.

  286. That's the opposite effect

  287. it's supposed to have,

  288. but we do see

  289. that because of our sin

  290. we often become judgmental

  291. or overly critical

  292. or feel superior to others.

  293. Arrogant instead of humble

  294. because of knowledge about Jesus.

  295. Or maybe it's an experience

  296. we had with Jesus.

  297. So there is a danger.

  298. I mean, even His own disciples

  299. were arguing about

  300. who is going to be

  301. the greatest in the kingdom.

  302. I mean, you read that

  303. and you're like,

  304. are you paying attention at all

  305. to what Jesus is saying?

  306. But yet,

  307. that is the inclination

  308. of our hearts

  309. to avoid weakness

  310. to which ultimately

  311. causes us to avoid strength.

  312. But throughout church history,

  313. we know there have been those

  314. who have used Jesus

  315. to try to gain power.

  316. And this should not be.

  317. The glories of Christ

  318. should humble us,

  319. but sin in us is strong.

  320. So we must fight against this.

  321. So he says,

  322. to keep me from becoming conceited

  323. because of this great experience

  324. I had in the heavens,

  325. a thorn was given to me

  326. in the flesh.

  327. Now we've heard,

  328. probably heard about this,

  329. a thorn in the flesh.

  330. And the reality is

  331. we don't know what this is.

  332. Many think it might be

  333. a physical ailment.

  334. After having some back problems

  335. a week ago,

  336. I'm like,

  337. it could be a back problem.

  338. That was really bad.

  339. That was hard.

  340. Some think it might be eyesight,

  341. a bad eyesight

  342. because of some things

  343. that are said

  344. in some other letters.

  345. Could it have been migraines,

  346. some have suggested.

  347. Some think it's a physical ailment,

  348. but then some have suggested

  349. because of all the stress

  350. he talks about

  351. and different things,

  352. it might have been

  353. a psychological ailment.

  354. Whatever it was,

  355. it was a big struggle.

  356. And because he doesn't tell us

  357. exactly what it is,

  358. we can kind of fill in the blank there

  359. and say,

  360. okay, I understand

  361. what you're talking about.

  362. I know what it's like

  363. to have a thorn in the flesh.

  364. That thing that makes me feel weak

  365. and vulnerable

  366. and makes me feel really frustrated.

  367. Something that we've asked

  368. the Lord to take away

  369. and he has yet to do that.

  370. We can understand that

  371. because Paul doesn't describe

  372. specifically what he's talking about.

  373. Now we might look at verse 10

  374. and where he says,

  375. for the sake of Christ,

  376. then I'm content with weaknesses,

  377. insults, hardships,

  378. persecutions, calamities.

  379. You know, we might say,

  380. okay, it might fit

  381. into one of those categories.

  382. When you start looking

  383. at what some of these words mean,

  384. like the word calamities,

  385. it means to be in a narrow space.

  386. We would use the phrase

  387. like to be between a rock

  388. and a hard place.

  389. We all understand that

  390. or understand what hardships are,

  391. which is basically

  392. something outside of us

  393. is making things really difficult,

  394. putting pressure on me.

  395. Some of us have faced persecution.

  396. We all know what it's like

  397. to be insulted.

  398. But we understand this idea

  399. of weakness.

  400. And whatever it is,

  401. whatever this thorn in the flesh was,

  402. it was sent to harass Paul,

  403. he says.

  404. This word harass

  405. literally means to torment

  406. or to strike with the fist.

  407. whatever it was,

  408. it was bad.

  409. And Paul felt pretty beat up about it.

  410. And in verse 7,

  411. he calls it a messenger of Satan.

  412. Now, we understand

  413. that a messenger carries a message.

  414. And I think that helps us

  415. to understand this passage.

  416. So when we have something

  417. that makes us feel weak

  418. or vulnerable

  419. or frustrated,

  420. that thorn in the flesh,

  421. there are two messages

  422. that we could be listening to.

  423. That first message

  424. would be the message of Satan,

  425. which is all throughout Scripture

  426. we've seen

  427. where he tries to tempt us

  428. and deceive us

  429. and to think that God doesn't love you.

  430. He wants to keep you down.

  431. Don't you think you know better

  432. than God does?

  433. If God really loved you,

  434. wouldn't he grant this for you?

  435. That message of Satan

  436. that came in the garden,

  437. literally,

  438. God had said to Adam,

  439. you can eat of all the fruit

  440. of all the trees

  441. except this one tree.

  442. And Satan comes in

  443. and has him focusing

  444. on this one tree

  445. and said,

  446. if God really loved you,

  447. he would let you eat

  448. of that one too.

  449. Instead,

  450. he doesn't know

  451. what's best for you.

  452. He knows that when you eat it,

  453. you will become like him,

  454. knowing good and evil.

  455. The message of Satan

  456. is God does not love you.

  457. He does not have a plan for you.

  458. And he is withholding

  459. something great from you.

  460. He wants us to doubt God's love

  461. and good plan for our lives.

  462. And when we're feeling

  463. a thorn in the flesh,

  464. that's one message

  465. that we are tempted to believe.

  466. But the second message

  467. comes from God.

  468. That when we have

  469. that thorn in the flesh,

  470. something that makes us feel

  471. weak, vulnerable, frustrated,

  472. that says,

  473. my grace is sufficient for you.

  474. My grace is enough.

  475. It can satisfy your longings.

  476. My grace will provide

  477. all that you need.

  478. I'm giving you

  479. all that you really need

  480. and it is good for you.

  481. So hear what God's saying.

  482. I'm giving you my riches.

  483. I'm giving you all that you need

  484. to face the problems

  485. that you're facing today.

  486. I'm giving you

  487. the very power of Christ

  488. to strengthen you.

  489. My grace is sufficient for you.

  490. But we're tempted

  491. to believe the other message.

  492. So Paul's saying,

  493. a messenger of Satan

  494. was given to me.

  495. A thorn in the flesh

  496. that came to harass me.

  497. And he heard this message

  498. from Satan,

  499. but then he heard

  500. this message from God.

  501. Which message

  502. are we going to listen to?

  503. But Paul says in verse 8,

  504. three times I pleaded

  505. with the Lord about this.

  506. Three times I asked God

  507. to take this away.

  508. And the Lord said,

  509. no, I'm not going to take it away.

  510. Commentators will kind of tell us

  511. that this echoes Jesus in the garden.

  512. We know how he came three times

  513. praying, saying,

  514. Lord, if it be your will,

  515. let this hour pass for me.

  516. Let this cup be taken away from me.

  517. And each time God said,

  518. no, you must face this.

  519. When we're suffering,

  520. good meaning, well-meaning people

  521. will tell us things like,

  522. hey, the situation's going to change.

  523. This will get better.

  524. We know this is going to go away.

  525. But what if it doesn't?

  526. What if it doesn't go away?

  527. What message will you believe?

  528. Jesus's words from Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  529. where he says,

  530. who among you,

  531. when a son asks for bread,

  532. will give him a stone?

  533. Or when he asks for a fish,

  534. will give him a snake?

  535. If you being evil,

  536. know how to give good gifts

  537. to your children,

  538. how much more will your heavenly father

  539. give what is good

  540. to those who ask him?

  541. Are Jesus's words true to us?

  542. That he is a good father?

  543. Not giving us a stone or a snake,

  544. but is giving what is good

  545. to his children when they ask.

  546. Do you believe that?

  547. When we have a thorn in the flesh,

  548. it is tough to believe it.

  549. We've all been there.

  550. As I'm talking about a thorn in the flesh,

  551. you probably have something

  552. that is going through your mind

  553. and where we have pleaded with the Lord

  554. to take it away.

  555. And when we think about our pleading

  556. and we're hearing a no,

  557. we shouldn't be hearing a harsh voice.

  558. Like a lot of times it's like,

  559. no, I'm not going to do this.

  560. Stop asking.

  561. But that's not God.

  562. Instead, it's more like

  563. the loving, gentle father saying,

  564. not right now, sweetie.

  565. Not yet, buddy.

  566. I'm Abba, father,

  567. and I give what is good.

  568. You have to trust me.

  569. I'm going to give you something better.

  570. I'm going to give you my power

  571. so that you can thrive despite this thorn.

  572. And this will deepen our relationship

  573. and you will know me more.

  574. And also, you will be able to comfort others

  575. with the comfort that I'm comforting you with right now.

  576. God says, my grace is enough.

  577. It is all you need.

  578. And then verse 9, Paul goes on to say

  579. that the message that he got was,

  580. my grace is sufficient

  581. for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  582. When we are weak,

  583. it allows God's strength

  584. to actually work through us

  585. and to put his strength on display.

  586. We already named some examples of that

  587. with Gideon and David and Christ.

  588. And one of my favorite examples

  589. that gets me through a lot of hard times

  590. is from 2 Chronicles chapter 20

    2 Chronicles 20 chapter mention

  591. when King Jehoshaphat comes before the Lord.

  592. A great army has come against him.

  593. And he says in verse 12,

  594. for we are powerless

  595. against this great horde

  596. that is coming against us.

  597. We do not know what to do,

  598. but our eyes are on you.

  599. He then sends out the worship team

  600. ahead of the army.

  601. And the Ammonites fight against themselves

  602. and destroy themselves.

  603. That'd be like us putting Don in the band

  604. out in front of everybody

  605. and say, hey, lead the way.

  606. God did it.

  607. We don't know what to do,

  608. but our eyes are on you.

  609. For when I am weak,

  610. I am strong.

  611. Paul Tripp, in his great devotional book,

  612. New Morning Mercies,

  613. he addresses this idea of weakness

  614. that was really ministered to me recently.

  615. He says, I don't want to be confused

  616. or unready to feel unqualified

  617. or hold others back.

  618. I don't like it when it seems

  619. that there are things I should know

  620. and I don't know.

  621. I don't want to let myself

  622. or others down.

  623. But your weakness is not the great danger

  624. that you think it is.

  625. Rather, the great danger

  626. is your delusion of strength.

  627. Because if you think you're strong,

  628. then you don't seek the help

  629. that you desperately need

  630. from the one who is the ultimate source

  631. of strength of every kind.

  632. For when I am weak,

  633. then I am strong.

  634. So Paul goes on to say,

  635. therefore, let's read verse 9.

  636. Therefore, I will boast

  637. all the more gladly of my weaknesses

  638. so that the power of Christ

  639. may rest upon me.

  640. He says, I'll do this all the more gladly.

  641. This word gladly is actually

  642. where we get the word hedonism, joy.

  643. He's saying, when I embrace my weaknesses,

  644. that's when the power of Christ

  645. is made perfect in me.

  646. It's emptying ourselves

  647. of our self-sufficiency

  648. so that we can be filled

  649. with the power of Christ.

  650. It means that I can find joy

  651. in the middle of suffering,

  652. in the midst of weakness.

  653. Because it's then that Christ's power

  654. rests upon us.

  655. And I realize,

  656. if you're going through suffering,

  657. I realize you read something like this

  658. and you're like,

  659. this sounds like someone

  660. who hasn't suffered before.

  661. But we know Paul suffered

  662. more than we can imagine.

  663. I mean, I don't think we understand

  664. when it talks about him being lost at sea

  665. a couple of times.

  666. I don't think we fathom

  667. how terrible that is.

  668. This is someone who has known

  669. great, great suffering.

  670. But he's saying we can rejoice.

  671. We can be glad about our weaknesses

  672. when these things come

  673. because it allows the power of Christ

  674. to rest upon me.

  675. This word rest literally means

  676. to pitch a tent or to tabernacle.

  677. And one commentator said

  678. that this is likely Paul drawing

  679. on the Old Testament image

  680. of the glory of God

  681. coming to rest on the tabernacle.

  682. Think of that imagery.

  683. The power of Christ

  684. coming to rest on you

  685. in the middle of your weakness

  686. when you need it most.

  687. Gets rid of all self-sufficiency

  688. and allows us to rely

  689. on his sufficient grace.

  690. We can handle the thorn

  691. because Christ's power and presence

  692. comes to settle on us,

  693. to rest on us.

  694. We can be content

  695. with weaknesses, insults,

  696. hardships, persecutions,

  697. and calamities.

  698. And again, this is not glorifying weakness

  699. and saying the more bad stuff

  700. that happens to me, the better.

  701. We can even glorify our weaknesses

  702. where we try to compare

  703. with other people.

  704. They're not suffering as much as I am.

  705. How dare they say that?

  706. We bend this so much

  707. because of our sin.

  708. But instead,

  709. we must learn to embrace our weakness

  710. to rely on Christ

  711. and the strength that he provides.

  712. So what?

  713. How should this change

  714. the way that we live?

  715. Weakness is not a hindrance

  716. to joy and thriving.

  717. It's a means

  718. by which we can have joy

  719. and thrive.

  720. Weakness does not get

  721. in the way of experiencing

  722. what God has for you.

  723. A thorn is not a sign

  724. that God doesn't care.

  725. Weakness is a tool

  726. to help us experience

  727. God's amazing grace.

  728. So when God lets us

  729. experience weakness,

  730. he's graciously reminding us

  731. of who we are

  732. and who he is

  733. and where we can find

  734. real strength.

  735. God is protecting us

  736. from ourselves.

  737. I love Tripp's words there

  738. of delusion of strength.

  739. Weaknesses help us

  740. wake up from that delusion.

  741. And we've got to learn

  742. to draw on the power of Christ,

  743. learning to embrace that weakness

  744. so that God's perfect grace

  745. can work in us.

  746. Now when hardship and suffering

  747. comes that make us weak,

  748. I think one of the things

  749. that we should say is,

  750. okay, Jesus must be up to something.

  751. When the phone rings

  752. and that's that person

  753. that you would least

  754. like to hear from

  755. or to think about,

  756. we should think,

  757. I wonder what God

  758. is up to right now.

  759. When we face that situation

  760. at work that makes us

  761. wake up with dread,

  762. not even want to get out

  763. of bed tomorrow,

  764. we should think,

  765. what is God wanting

  766. to do for me?

  767. When we're overwhelmed

  768. by the problems

  769. that seem to just pile up

  770. on top of each other,

  771. the problems that we're facing

  772. just multiplies

  773. and we feel weighed down by that.

  774. Anything that disrupts

  775. the way we think

  776. the world should be going,

  777. we should be thinking,

  778. what is God wanting

  779. to do through this?

  780. What is he up to today?

  781. So as I was working

  782. on this passage this week,

  783. recently the acres

  784. are kind of up for visa renewal.

  785. That can be a real stressful time.

  786. And we were getting some word

  787. from the office

  788. that there's some timing issues

  789. and we're a little stressed about it.

  790. And we're praying

  791. and we're praying

  792. and we're praying

  793. and the Lord provided.

  794. This is great.

  795. This is wonderful.

  796. Okay.

  797. The Lord has answered our prayer.

  798. Well, on Friday,

  799. after I've been working

  800. through this passage for a week,

  801. I have sent some messages

  802. to our person in the office

  803. and haven't heard anything.

  804. And she finally responds and says,

  805. hey, I've got an update for you.

  806. I will send to you soon.

  807. Now, previously in the past six months,

  808. that's been code for,

  809. uh-oh, things haven't been going

  810. as they should,

  811. but it's okay.

  812. We're working on a solution.

  813. And so I sent that message.

  814. Okay, I have to ask,

  815. is everything okay?

  816. And then I see those three dots.

  817. And I wait.

  818. And I wait.

  819. And I said,

  820. all right, Lord.

  821. You've been working in me on this.

  822. I've got to ask the question,

  823. what are you up to right now?

  824. I don't know if I can handle this.

  825. What are you up to right now?

  826. And I heard that my grace is sufficient.

  827. So I was resting.

  828. Come to find out there's nothing wrong.

  829. It was a total just like God

  830. just teaching me something in that moment.

  831. Am I willing to apply this to my life

  832. and the things that I dread

  833. and the things that I don't want to be true

  834. in the most inconvenient, stressful times?

  835. Am I willing to say,

  836. all right, God, what are you up to?

  837. I'm here for it.

  838. Your grace is sufficient for me.

  839. Are we willing to embrace weakness

  840. in that way?

  841. Are we going to try to cling to our own strength,

  842. which is what we try to do oftentimes?

  843. But when we do that,

  844. when we try to hold that control,

  845. we are avoiding the power of Christ

  846. working in our lives.

  847. When God doesn't seem to be answering prayer,

  848. when it seems he's abandoned us,

  849. because we can't fathom anything good

  850. coming from this situation.

  851. When those times happen,

  852. we just have to realize

  853. we haven't reached the end of the story yet.

  854. God is working.

  855. He is working powerfully

  856. and he is giving me his riches

  857. to make it through,

  858. to thrive,

  859. to have joy.

  860. He has my good and his glory in mind

  861. and he just says,

  862. trust me.

  863. And we have to understand,

  864. God's not necessarily trying to solve

  865. all of our problems that we're facing.

  866. God is trying to use your problems

  867. to draw you to himself

  868. so that you can know him deeper,

  869. increase the intimacy that you have with him,

  870. be a comfort to others.

  871. And so weakness is like an invitation

  872. to a deeper relationship with Jesus

  873. because we're learning to depend on him

  874. in ways that are new.

  875. Every morning it seems like.

  876. Because Jesus embraced weakness for us,

  877. all the promises of God

  878. find their yes and amen.

  879. Jesus embraced weakness

  880. on our behalf perfectly

  881. so that we could have

  882. his perfect strength.

  883. And one day God's going to take care

  884. of all those secondary problems.

  885. Jesus says,

  886. I'm making all things new.

  887. And until then,

  888. until then,

  889. let him draw you into that deep,

  890. soul-satisfying relationship

  891. that he desires for us to have,

  892. even though it requires us

  893. to embrace weakness.

  894. Let's pray.

  895. God, we do thank you

  896. that not only you are our strength

  897. when we're weak,

  898. you meet us in weakness

  899. filling us with your strength,

  900. making your strength perfect

  901. in our weakness.

  902. Let us learn to cling to that, Lord.

  903. Lord, we are so tempted

  904. to believe the message of Satan.

  905. We're so tempted to say,

  906. if he loved me,

  907. he would answer me right away.

  908. He would say,

  909. yes,

  910. help us, Lord,

  911. to trust you.

  912. You've proven it over and over

  913. and over and over.

  914. Day by day,

  915. your mercies are new every morning.

  916. Your grace has been lavished on us,

  917. and yet we daily,

  918. moment by moment,

  919. forget.

  920. Please help us

  921. to latch on to your grace,

  922. to embrace weakness,

  923. knowing that when we are emptied

  924. of our self-sufficiency.

  925. Your sufficient grace

  926. fills us with the strength of Christ.

  927. Let us embrace that, Lord.

  928. Let us live in the way

  929. that you desire for us to live

  930. so that we can have intimacy with you

  931. and fellowship with one another,

  932. building up each other in Christ,

  933. because we're all weak,

  934. needing strength,

  935. and we need each other

  936. as you've created us

  937. to be interdependent.

  938. Help us to rely on you

  939. and to embrace weakness

  940. in order to find strength of Christ.

  941. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  942. Amen.
