  1. So let's read God's word from Mark's gospel, chapter 4, verses 35 to 41.

  2. There are some Bibles around the church on some tables.

  3. If you don't have a Bible and you come here today without one,

  4. please feel free to take a Bible away from here.

  5. We'd be very happy for you to do that.

  6. The text will also be on the screen.

  7. It's printed in the bulletin.

  8. So lots of ways to access it as it's preached this morning.

  9. So let's read God's word together.

  10. Mark, chapter 4, verses 35 to 41.

    Mark 4:35–41

  11. And they woke him and said to him,

  12. Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?

  13. And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,

  14. Peace, be still.

  15. And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

  16. He said to them, Why are you so afraid?

  17. Have you still no faith?

  18. And they were filled with great fear and said to one another,

  19. Who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey him?

  20. This is God's holy word.

  21. You'll have a Bible to turn back to the passage that's been read from the fourth chapter of Mark's gospel.

  22. I remember when I was a teenager reading a book on ministry saying you should never,

  23. if you can possibly avoid it, never preach on well-known passages.

  24. But I'm old enough to take the risk now and to direct us this morning to this extremely well-known passage of our Lord Jesus stilling the storm.

  25. Because I think it helps us answer the question,

  26. Who really is Jesus?

  27. And the question that the older I've got has kind of haunted me.

  28. What was and is Jesus really like?

  29. I don't mean in terms of categories that theologians use,

  30. but in terms of the words that Corey gave to us earlier on from the prophecy of Isaiah,

  31. he was like someone who didn't break bruised reeds or snuff out dimly burning wicks.

  32. And it's a question that I think in some ways,

  33. really, if we can get near to some really clear biblical answers,

  34. has the power to transform the atmosphere of our Christian lives.

  35. To use a human illustration,

  36. the way getting to know someone else that we know, admire, and love

  37. can actually transform the atmosphere of our own lives.

  38. That what the Holy Spirit does through the records of the life and ministry of Jesus

  39. is to bring Him close to us and us close to Him

  40. so that we sense what He is really like.

  41. And that can change everything.

  42. And certainly this was an instance in the lives of the disciples

  43. that had the potential to change everything.

  44. It began, in a sense, with a storm.

  45. And I don't know how many sermons I've heard

  46. on how Jesus can still the storm in your heart,

  47. but actually what He did here was create a storm in their hearts

  48. in order to loosen their inadequate view of who He really was

  49. and lead them into a much more adequate view

  50. that would transform their lives wonderfully.

  51. And we love passages like this for different reasons.

  52. Some of us may have loved this passage all our lives.

  53. We maybe even can remember the Sunday school teacher

  54. when we were in primary school who first told us this story.

  55. And the power of it has kind of resided ever since in our imagination.

  56. And then those of you who are of a more aesthetic tendency

  57. and who love art may love Rembrandt's great painting

  58. of the storm on Galilee.

  59. It's a magnificent painting into which he painted himself

  60. just at the back of the ship

  61. where he seems to be looking out at the viewer

  62. and saying,

  63. well, how would you feel if you were in my position?

  64. I've always wanted to meet somebody

  65. who's actually seen that painting

  66. because it was stolen several decades ago

  67. and it's never been seen since.

  68. So, if you have seen that painting,

  69. we need to go to the local police station

  70. where there may be a reward for you.

  71. And then some few of us

  72. who have kind of nerdy theological interests

  73. may be interested in this passage

  74. because it was the passage that brought a man

  75. who some people regard as the greatest ever English theologian

  76. to a real assurance that he was actually a Christian.

  77. He was in his mid-twenties at the time

  78. and very unsure of where he stood spiritually

  79. and this was the passage.

  80. This simple passage to this great intellect

  81. brought a real knowledge of Christ

  82. and a real assurance of him.

  83. So, I want to try and unpack for us

  84. a number of things that we find in this passage.

  85. Probably, you know that this passage

  86. is really in all three of the Gospels,

  87. Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  88. But it's told in different ways.

  89. And the church has believed

  90. for most of the church's existence

  91. that Mark's gospel

  92. is actually Peter's gospel.

  93. And one of the very early comments

  94. about Mark's gospel

  95. by a man called Papias

  96. indicates that Mark

  97. served really as the secretary

  98. of Simon Peter.

  99. And that's why of all the Gospels,

  100. Mark's gospel is the easiest gospel

  101. to turn into the first person singular.

  102. And it's a lovely way to read it, actually.

  103. And if you do that,

  104. you will catch a sense that,

  105. yeah, maybe it is true that Peter wrote this

  106. because there's this sense of vitality.

  107. There's a kind of,

  108. everything happens immediately,

  109. which is very Peter-like.

  110. But there's also this strong sense

  111. that this was the story of an eyewitness.

  112. And there are little indications of that

  113. that you don't find in the other Gospels.

  114. For example,

  115. Mark alone tells us

  116. the time of day this happened.

  117. It was in the evening.

  118. None of the other gospel writers

  119. noticed that.

  120. This was an evening cruise

  121. over the calm sea of Galilee.

  122. Another thing Mark tells us

  123. that indicates there's an eyewitness behind this

  124. is he says there were other boats.

  125. My guess is

  126. that unless you kind of focus down on that,

  127. you would assume

  128. that what's described here

  129. is what happened to a single boat.

  130. But what happened here

  131. apparently happened to a little flotilla of boats.

  132. And there's another rather sweet indication

  133. that this is the story told by an eyewitness

  134. because this is the only gospel

  135. that tells us there was a pillow for Jesus

  136. to put his head on.

  137. And I think all of us recognize

  138. that when we have

  139. kind of dramatic emotional experiences,

  140. it is amazing what details we remember

  141. that nobody else would notice

  142. unless they'd been there.

  143. And so, I think it's really helpful for us

  144. to see the shadow of Simon Peter

  145. in the background here.

  146. And if I can remember to do it,

  147. I will come back to that

  148. towards the end of the sermon.

  149. But the other little eyewitness detail

  150. that I think is really important

  151. to notice is the way Mark's gospel

  152. describes the atmosphere

  153. in which this event began.

  154. And you'll see this right in verse 35.

  155. When evening had come,

  156. Jesus said to them,

  157. let us go across

  158. to the other side.

  159. And lest I also forget to say this,

  160. the great thing is

  161. that they did get to the other side.

  162. But then, Mark says,

  163. leaving the crowd,

  164. they took him with them

  165. in the boat.

  166. And it's the next phrase

  167. I want you to focus attention on

  168. because I think this conveys

  169. the atmosphere of the evening.

  170. They took him

  171. just as he was.

  172. Just as he was.

  173. I heard somebody

  174. in the Westminster Seminary group,

  175. which is the reason

  176. I'm imposed on you this morning,

  177. because I'd rather Corey were preaching,

  178. say,

  179. so,

  180. what's the dress code?

  181. I didn't say anything.

  182. But what I thought was,

  183. just come as you are.

  184. Right?

  185. Just come as you are.

  186. And so,

  187. there's something,

  188. there's something almost magical

  189. about that little phrase.

  190. They took him

  191. just as he was.

  192. They had no reason,

  193. they had no reason

  194. to

  195. deny his

  196. encouragement,

  197. let's go over

  198. to the other side.

  199. Because they would

  200. take him there.

  201. I mean,

  202. some of them at least

  203. were masters

  204. of this little stretch

  205. of water.

  206. And those of you

  207. who have seen it,

  208. it's sea,

  209. it is not,

  210. it's a loch.

  211. And they must have known

  212. it's every inch,

  213. almost it's every fish.

  214. And so,

  215. nothing special about this.

  216. They probably had done this

  217. often enough.

  218. Let's just go out

  219. on the boat

  220. for a wee while

  221. tonight.

  222. But it's the dramatic

  223. contrast

  224. between that little phrase

  225. and the question

  226. at the end

  227. that bookends

  228. this extraordinary

  229. experience they had.

  230. They took him

  231. just as he was.

  232. But by the end

  233. of the story,

  234. they're really saying,

  235. we didn't really know

  236. who he was at all.

  237. We thought we knew

  238. who he was.

  239. And we thought we knew

  240. what we were capable of.

  241. But we didn't really

  242. understand either.

  243. And what Jesus

  244. is doing here

  245. is bringing

  246. these disciples

  247. who have really

  248. come to know him,

  249. obviously come to love him,

  250. and in a sense

  251. come to trust him,

  252. he's taking them

  253. a stage further

  254. into helping them

  255. to understand

  256. what he is actually

  257. really like.

  258. And the great thing here,

  259. I think,

  260. is to remember,

  261. which I remind myself

  262. of very often,

  263. what Hebrews 13 says,

  264. he is the same today

  265. as he was yesterday.

  266. I often say,

  267. when Hebrews says

  268. he's the same yesterday,

  269. today, and forever,

  270. it's not a long-winded way

  271. of saying he's eternal,

  272. although that's true.

  273. What it's saying is

  274. the Jesus of today,

  275. of our time,

  276. readers of my letter,

  277. is exactly the same

  278. as the Jesus of yesterday,

  279. the Jesus of whom

  280. you read in the Gospels.

  281. So, there are three stages,

  282. I think,

  283. that you find in this story,

  284. which isn't a joke

  285. because most stories

  286. have three stages to them.

  287. And the first stage,

  288. I think, is this.

  289. And it's kind of stunning

  290. to notice it.

  291. It is that Jesus

  292. led them into difficulty

  293. in the storm.

  294. Jesus led them into difficulty

  295. in the storm.

  296. Yes, the text says

  297. they took him,

  298. but they only took him

  299. because he said,

  300. I want to take you.

  301. Let's go across

  302. to the other side.

  303. So, if you think about

  304. this experience

  305. in this context

  306. and ask the question,

  307. why were they in the storm

  308. in the first place?

  309. Why were they in the storm

  310. in the first place?

  311. The answer is

  312. because Jesus took them

  313. into the storm.

  314. It's a staggeringly

  315. illuminating illustration

  316. of Jesus' confidence

  317. in Himself

  318. to get these disciples

  319. over to the other side

  320. no matter what happens.

  321. But Peter is making clear

  322. through Mark's Gospel

  323. this was Jesus' idea.

  324. It was Jesus' idea

  325. to sail into the storm

  326. on the Sea of Galilee.

  327. And you can almost hear

  328. Simon Peter

  329. using this

  330. as an illustration

  331. when, for example,

  332. later on

  333. he's writing

  334. in 1 Peter 4, 12

  335. and saying,

  336. don't be surprised

  337. by the fiery trials

  338. that are coming to you

  339. as though this was strange.

  340. And that's what

  341. this passage teaches us.

  342. But the Lord Jesus,

  343. as He draws us

  344. to Himself

  345. and as we begin

  346. to trust Him,

  347. finds occasions

  348. to lead us

  349. into difficulties.

  350. And the reason

  351. He does so

  352. is because

  353. as long as we live

  354. a life without difficulties,

  355. we never actually grow.

  356. And what is so interesting,

  357. I think,

  358. in this context

  359. is

  360. that many Christians

  361. don't seem

  362. to think that way.

  363. I had a very dear friend,

  364. a man I respected

  365. enormously,

  366. who knew me

  367. very well.

  368. And whenever I made

  369. a major life decision,

  370. of which I've made

  371. a few,

  372. and it was as though

  373. the sea opened up

  374. and things went smoothly,

  375. he used to say to me,

  376. isn't it just like

  377. the Lord

  378. to do that?

  379. Isn't it just like

  380. the Lord

  381. to do that?

  382. And I dearly

  383. loved this man,

  384. but I actually found

  385. that marginally

  386. irritating.

  387. Because the truth is,

  388. it is just like

  389. the Lord

  390. to do that,

  391. but it's also

  392. just like the Lord

  393. to do this.

  394. And I think

  395. this story

  396. is a wonderful

  397. illustration

  398. of the principle

  399. that we should

  400. never think

  401. that our simple

  402. trust and obedience

  403. to the Lord

  404. Jesus

  405. is a reality

  406. from which

  407. we can extrapolate

  408. how the future

  409. is going to be.

  410. And not to

  411. discourage

  412. those of you

  413. who are young,

  414. but as I,

  415. because I've been

  416. thinking about this

  417. passage the last

  418. couple of days,

  419. as I look back

  420. on my own life,

  421. I'm kind of,

  422. I'm really struck

  423. by the fact

  424. that having made

  425. major decisions

  426. and assuming,

  427. and everyone else

  428. I knew,

  429. assuming where

  430. that would lead,

  431. in almost every

  432. single case,

  433. that's not where

  434. they've led.

  435. And you see

  436. what Jesus

  437. is teaching us

  438. as He does this

  439. in our lives,

  440. what He was teaching

  441. them,

  442. that we need

  443. to understand

  444. that there will

  445. be times

  446. when He will

  447. open up the sea

  448. and we will

  449. walk across

  450. on dry land,

  451. but because He

  452. wants us to

  453. grow strong,

  454. and we grow

  455. strong by the

  456. exercise of our

  457. muscles,

  458. and sometimes

  459. that kind of

  460. exercise hurts,

  461. there will be

  462. times when

  463. trusting Him

  464. and following Him

  465. will also

  466. lead us

  467. into difficulties,

  468. into storms,

  469. which is why,

  470. you know,

  471. every,

  472. every Christian

  473. minister I know

  474. would be able

  475. to tell us

  476. the numbers

  477. of people

  478. who have said

  479. to them,

  480. why is it

  481. now I become

  482. a Christian

  483. that many things

  484. seem to be more

  485. difficult than

  486. they used to be?

  487. It's because

  488. that's the way

  489. He teaches us

  490. to trust Him.

  491. That's the way

  492. we grow

  493. in trust

  494. for Him.

  495. the only thing

  496. I watch

  497. in the Olympics

  498. is the

  499. weightlifting,

  500. and I love

  501. to see these

  502. giants come on

  503. to stages like

  504. this and lift

  505. up these

  506. barbells,

  507. like amounting

  508. to you lifting

  509. up the three

  510. heaviest people

  511. you know,

  512. and their legs

  513. are quivering,

  514. and they,

  515. you know,

  516. and then they get

  517. it up,

  518. whatever it is,

  519. and I sit

  520. on the couch

  521. saying,

  522. I could do that.

  523. Why can't I

  524. do that?

  525. It's because

  526. I haven't endured

  527. any of the

  528. hardship,

  529. any of the

  530. stress,

  531. any of the

  532. exercise that

  533. has slowly

  534. built these

  535. men and women

  536. up to be able

  537. to do that

  538. kind of thing.

  539. And it's the

  540. same in the

  541. Christian life.

  542. That's why

  543. training is

  544. used as

  545. a metaphor

  546. for the

  547. Christian life.

  548. And I think

  549. what is so

  550. fascinating

  551. here is

  552. that I

  553. know this

  554. is slight

  555. speculation,

  556. but I think

  557. the text

  558. gives us

  559. every reason

  560. to believe

  561. that these

  562. disciples

  563. followed

  564. Jesus

  565. because they

  566. thought they

  567. were masters

  568. of the

  569. situation.

  570. And what

  571. Jesus wanted

  572. to do was

  573. to teach

  574. them that

  575. there is no

  576. situation of

  577. which we are

  578. master.

  579. But He

  580. is master

  581. of every

  582. situation.

  583. And that

  584. speaks to us,

  585. doesn't it?

  586. I mean,

  587. there are so

  588. many things

  589. that we know

  590. better than

  591. Jesus about.

  592. And what He's

  593. teaching these

  594. disciples is

  595. sometimes it's

  596. in the areas

  597. where we think

  598. we know best

  599. that He needs

  600. to teach us

  601. that He

  602. actually knows

  603. best.

  604. So that's the

  605. first stage

  606. in this story

  607. that it was

  608. Jesus who

  609. actually led

  610. them into

  611. these difficulties

  612. in the storm.

  613. The second

  614. thing to notice,

  615. and this emerges

  616. in their

  617. response to

  618. Him and

  619. His response

  620. to them,

  621. is that at

  622. the core of

  623. this story,

  624. Jesus is

  625. testing the

  626. reality of

  627. their faith

  628. in the storm.

  629. And it's

  630. interesting how

  631. the different

  632. gospel writers

  633. record this.

  634. Mark records

  635. it in the

  636. harshest of

  637. ways.

  638. The other

  639. gospel writers,

  640. their language

  641. is not quite

  642. so harsh.

  643. Here you'll

  644. notice what

  645. Mark records

  646. is, and

  647. presumably Jesus

  648. asked several

  649. questions, but

  650. the ones that

  651. Mark records

  652. are, why are

  653. you so afraid?

  654. Have you still

  655. no faith?

  656. And you'll

  657. remember how

  658. Matthew, for

  659. example, puts

  660. that as, oh,

  661. you of little

  662. faith.

  663. Why are you

  664. afraid, oh,

  665. you of little

  666. faith?

  667. So this

  668. question, have

  669. you no faith,

  670. faith?

  671. It's not so

  672. much doubting

  673. that they have

  674. any faith, but

  675. do they have

  676. faith for this

  677. situation?

  678. Do they trust

  679. Him in this

  680. situation?

  681. And if you

  682. use your

  683. imagination, you

  684. can't help

  685. thinking that

  686. when Jesus put

  687. His head down

  688. on the pillow,

  689. He was thinking

  690. to Himself,

  691. how long will

  692. it be before

  693. they are shaking

  694. me?

  695. and these

  696. strong, proud

  697. fishermen asking

  698. me, carpenter of

  699. Nazareth, to

  700. save them in

  701. the situation.

  702. And what is in

  703. a way so

  704. marvelous about

  705. Mark's account is

  706. that this very

  707. straightforward

  708. language continues,

  709. and you'll see it

  710. in verse 38,

  711. they woke him and

  712. said to him,

  713. maybe the

  714. cruelest words they

  715. ever said to

  716. him, don't you

  717. care if we

  718. perish?

  719. So you hear

  720. Mark again,

  721. but you know,

  722. Peter, if this is

  723. Peter's voice,

  724. this is absolutely

  725. straightforward.

  726. There is no

  727. concern that

  728. people might

  729. misunderstand what

  730. they are saying.

  731. Maybe in

  732. Matthew's gospel

  733. there's a concern

  734. that I do not

  735. want people to

  736. misunderstand what's

  737. actually happening

  738. here, but here it

  739. is absolutely

  740. brutal.

  741. It is the kind

  742. of thing you

  743. do not say to

  744. the person sitting

  745. beside you on a

  746. Sunday morning in

  747. St.

  748. Columbus when

  749. you're asked the

  750. question, how are

  751. things?

  752. You don't say to

  753. them, the Lord

  754. doesn't care if I'm

  755. perishing.

  756. But nevertheless,

  757. many of us will

  758. have said that and

  759. have been in

  760. situations where

  761. that is exactly

  762. what we have

  763. felt.

  764. Everything has

  765. gone against us.

  766. We see no way

  767. through our

  768. difficulties.

  769. It seems that

  770. God has abandoned

  771. us.

  772. Don't you care if

  773. we are perishing?

  774. Now, the truth of

  775. the matter was that

  776. he wouldn't have

  777. been in the boat

  778. in the first place

  779. of the world.

  780. He wouldn't have

  781. called them if he

  782. didn't care.

  783. But, you know, the

  784. supreme demonstration

  785. that he cared was, of

  786. course, he was going to

  787. die for them on the

  788. cross.

  789. God so loved the

  790. world he gave his

  791. only Son that whoever

  792. believes in him should

  793. not perish, but of

  794. everlasting life.

  795. God did not send his

  796. Son into the world to

  797. condemn the world, but

  798. that the world through

  799. him might be saved.

  800. They couldn't see

  801. that, even although

  802. he had given little

  803. indications earlier on

  804. that something was

  805. going to happen, even

  806. although they should

  807. have known what

  808. Isaiah was talking

  809. about when he spoke

  810. about the coming

  811. Savior.

  812. But they couldn't

  813. see who Jesus really

  814. was.

  815. And, of course,

  816. that's my problem,

  817. isn't it?

  818. when I feel deserted,

  819. when I feel he doesn't

  820. care, I've lost sight

  821. of who he really is.

  822. Remember how Paul puts

  823. it in Romans 8.32?

  824. He says, listen, if God

  825. didn't spare his own

  826. Son but gave him up for

  827. us all, we can be

  828. absolutely sure that he

  829. will give us everything

  830. we need to get us from

  831. here into his glorious

  832. presence.

  833. But we take our eye off

  834. the ball, or more

  835. accurately.

  836. We take our eye off

  837. the Savior.

  838. And that's what they

  839. were doing.

  840. And so their hearts

  841. spoke through their lips

  842. about what they were

  843. saying was, you are cruel

  844. to us, Jesus.

  845. Don't you care that we

  846. are perishing?

  847. And in a congregation

  848. like this, it wouldn't be

  849. surprising if some of us

  850. felt that way today as

  851. well.

  852. My friend Derek Thomas,

  853. Corey's friend Derek

  854. Thomas, tells the story

  855. of a Welsh minister who

  856. had a lady come to him

  857. and she said, I'm

  858. struggling in my

  859. Christian life.

  860. He said, what's the

  861. problem?

  862. He said, I've become

  863. very impatient.

  864. And he said, well, we can

  865. fix that.

  866. Let's pray.

  867. And he prayed briefly, dear

  868. Lord, send some trials

  869. into my sister's life.

  870. Amen.

  871. And she began to express

  872. a little impatience.

  873. But you see, then he sat

  874. her down and explained to

  875. her that you don't develop

  876. patience except in situations

  877. that would evoke from you

  878. a spirit of impatience.

  879. And you will only learn

  880. that patience when you

  881. begin to look not within

  882. yourself to your own

  883. response to the situation,

  884. but to who Jesus has become

  885. in your life, to what you

  886. know of Jesus, and to the

  887. way in which he is able to

  888. see you through situations

  889. that previously evoked

  890. impatience, to have his

  891. patience.

  892. And that's what Jesus is

  893. doing.

  894. He is always testing our

  895. faith in him.

  896. And in a sense, the only way

  897. he can do that is by

  898. dismantling our easy

  899. assumptions that having

  900. confessed that we trust him

  901. fully, we do actually trust

  902. him fully.

  903. And you know, those of you

  904. who are parents, you know

  905. that when your son or

  906. daughter has something

  907. they're gripping onto in

  908. their hands, and you say,

  909. please give that to me.

  910. And he says, please give it

  911. to me.

  912. And then you drop the please,

  913. and it's give it to me.

  914. And then you drop the give it

  915. to me, and you give it to

  916. them.

  917. And you have this battle to

  918. open their hands so that

  919. whatever it is they are

  920. holding onto lies open in

  921. their hands so that you can

  922. take it out.

  923. And we foolishly forget that

  924. we are all guilty of

  925. infantile regression in the

  926. Christian life.

  927. And there are many things that

  928. we hold on to tightly, our own

  929. capacities, our own abilities.

  930. I have no doubt that's what

  931. Jesus was doing.

  932. That's why this took place

  933. on the sea, because these

  934. men were fishermen.

  935. This was their area of

  936. mastery.

  937. And you see in Scripture,

  938. that is often the problem,

  939. isn't it?

  940. Think about Isaiah.

  941. What does Isaiah cry out

  942. about when he sees the

  943. glory of the Lord?

  944. He cries out about his

  945. sinful lips.

  946. I imagine him going down

  947. after that experience to

  948. his best friend and his

  949. best friend seeing that

  950. he is in distress and saying,

  951. what's the problem, Isaiah?

  952. And Isaiah says, my sinful

  953. lips.

  954. And his friend saying, you

  955. and Mrs. Isaiah and the

  956. boys need to go on holiday.

  957. You're overwrought.

  958. You are the finest preacher we

  959. have had in this city in

  960. decades.

  961. And I like to think of

  962. Isaiah, this is my

  963. Scottish imagination,

  964. lifting him up by his robes

  965. and saying, you're not

  966. listening to what I'm saying.

  967. My problem is, it's right

  968. into the strengths of my life,

  969. my best gifts in life,

  970. that my sinfulness and

  971. mistrust has been woven.

  972. And I felt in that place that God

  973. was beginning to dismantle and

  974. deconstruct me in order that he

  975. might reconstruct me again.

  976. And that's surely what the Lord

  977. Jesus was doing here.

  978. He was exposing the frailty of

  979. their faith in order that he might

  980. strengthen that faith.

  981. And he does this, of course.

  982. And this is how the story ends.

  983. He leads them into difficulty.

  984. He tests their faith's reality.

  985. And then in the Sea of Galilee,

  986. he shows them his glory.

  987. And we were singing about that.

  988. This passage is like a

  989. fulfillment echo of Psalm 107.

  990. Men going down into the sea

  991. who were used to plying their

  992. trade on the waters and suddenly

  993. finding themselves in a storm and

  994. crying out to the Lord and the

  995. Lord saving them and the Lord

  996. bringing them to a safe haven.

  997. It's like the fulfillment of a

  998. shadowy prophecy from the Old

  999. Testament.

  1000. But it's also, I think, not just a

1001. fulfillment of a shadowy prophecy.

1002. It is itself a kind of reworking

1003. of the shadow of an earlier prophecy

1004. that is still a kind of shadow of

1005. something that is to come.

1006. Because it's interesting that the

1007. psalm that is most used with

1008. reference to the passion and death of

1009. the Lord Jesus Christ is not one of

  1010. the better known psalms.

  1011. It's actually Psalm 69.

1012. And it's the psalm that the apostles

1013. picked out little details from and

1014. saw that they were fulfilled in the

  1015. crucifixion.

  1016. And it's a psalm actually about a

  1017. water ordeal.

1018. The waters have gone over my head.

1019. And you can see how then Jesus,

1020. I should say in this church,

1021. by whatever means Jesus was baptized,

1022. the waters went over his head in the

  1023. river Jordan.

1024. And he saw that as a kind of miniature

1025. water ordeal that pointed to the

1026. greater ordeal described in Psalm 69,

1027. his ordeal that he described later on

1028. as the baptism with which he was still

  1029. to be baptized.

1030. And whereas in the river Jordan,

1031. if you think about it,

1032. you can understand John the Baptist's

1033. reluctance because this river Jordan

1034. is now symbolically full of the

1035. pollution of confessed sins of perhaps

1036. tens of thousands of people.

1037. And this is the water he's going to

  1038. baptize Jesus with?

  1039. But you see,

  1040. that's the point,

  1041. isn't it?

1042. It's water polluted by the sins of others

1043. in which Jesus will be baptized symbolically

1044. in Jordan and actually on the cross of Calvary,

1045. and the waters will go over his head

  1046. and engulf him.

1047. And so it's not just the disciples

1048. who are in the storm here.

1049. It's Jesus who is in the storm here.

1050. That may be the reason for the use of this

1051. very surprising verb that Mark records,

1052. that when Jesus got up,

  1053. you notice,

1054. he rebuked the wind and the sea.

1055. That's the verb that's going to be used

1056. later on when Jesus rebukes the powers of

1057. darkness and death and hell.

  1058. So there's something happening,

1059. not just to the disciples here,

1060. but there's something happening to Jesus here.

1061. There's something about his sense

1062. that he too is going to be engulfed

1063. that makes him rise from sleep

1064. and rebuke the wind and the waves

  1065. and say,

  1066. peace be still.

1067. Because that's what he's going to do in Calvary.

1068. Even the use of the word peace is interesting,

  1069. isn't it?

1070. It's actually the first word that Jesus used

1071. to the disciples hiding away there

  1072. in their upper room

1073. when he appeared on the evening of the resurrection.

  1074. First word,

  1075. peace.

  1076. Be still.

  1077. It's like,

  1078. it's like what we've got here

1079. is a trailer for what is going to happen

  1080. in the future.

1081. And here in the midst of the storm,

1082. Jesus is showing them his glory

1083. that he's able to overcome and still the storm

1084. because ultimately he's going to experience the storm.

1085. And through his death for their sins and his resurrection,

1086. he is going to bring them peace.

1087. And maybe that's the reason why

  1088. in Revelation 21,

1089. we're told that in the future world,

1090. there will be no more sea.

  1091. Well, that's a pity.

1092. There'll be no more sea.

  1093. What does that mean?

1094. Well, the book of Revelation is full of picture language,

  1095. isn't it?

  1096. I don't think it's saying

1097. in the new heavens and the new earth,

1098. there'll be no more mountains

  1099. and no more sea.

1100. I think it's saying in that world,

1101. there will be no more of that kind of sea

1102. because Jesus' peace and Jesus' glory

  1103. will be absolutely everywhere.

1104. Get back to Simon Peter for a moment.

1105. I've always thought reading this passage,

  1106. especially in Mark's gospel,

  1107. if indeed it's Peter's gospel,

1108. Peter, you're not telling us something here.

1109. You're not telling us what was going on in your head

  1110. when Jesus said,

1111. okay, boys, we're going over to the other side tonight.

1112. You're not telling us how for once in your life

1113. you kept your mouth shut.

1114. And you didn't say to the others,

  1115. he's a carpenter.

  1116. We're the fishermen.

1117. There might be a storm tonight.

1118. And I've sometimes extrapolated from that in my imagination.

1119. So, what would have been like for Simon Peter

1120. to have dug his heels in

1121. and watched the other friends sail over,

  1122. the storm come in?

1123. And of course it would have broken his heart,

1124. but part of that man would have been saying,

  1125. I told you so.

1126. You should have listened to me.

  1127. I knew best.

1128. But what would actually have happened to Peter

1129. if that had been true?

1130. Well, Peter would never have seen the glory.

1131. He'd never have seen who Jesus really is,

1132. what Jesus can really do.

1133. And the wonderful thing is,

1134. as you fast forward from Mark's gospel

1135. into the Acts of the Apostles

1136. and see the way the Lord dealt with Peter,

1137. you remember how by Acts chapter 12,

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  1138. Peter is in prison.

  1139. And Luke tells us,

1140. the night before he was about to be taken out,

1141. and that sounds a bit Glaswegian,

1142. and that's what it means.

1143. He was really about to be taken out,

  1144. presumably tried and executed.

1145. And the Lord sent an angel to rescue him.

1146. And the thing that I find so fascinating

1147. is what Peter was doing that night.

1148. He was lying fast asleep,

1149. and the angel had to shake him

  1150. and wake him

1151. so that he would be rescued.

1152. His life had been wonderfully transformed.

1153. And that's what Jesus is like.

1154. I mentioned that those of you

  1155. who are theological nerdy

  1156. might love this passage

1157. because you know the story

  1158. of either the conversion

  1159. or the real assurance

1160. that he was a Christian

1161. of perhaps the greatest English theologian.

1162. His name was John Owen.

1163. He went with a friend to a church in London

1164. when he was in his mid-twenties.

  1165. I think he wasn't really sure

1166. whether he was really a Christian or not,

1167. although he had the whole Christian baggage

1168. behind him in his life.

  1169. He was a minister's son.

1170. He was an Oxford graduate.

  1171. He was brilliant.

1172. But he wasn't sure he was a believer.

1173. And they went to hear

  1174. a famous preacher.

1175. And a substitute came in to the pulpit.

1176. And his friend said to him,

1177. let's go around the corner

  1178. and hear somebody else.

1179. You can do that in Edinburgh, apparently.

1180. And Owen was so melancholic.

1181. He said, now I'm just going to stay.

  1182. And the man preached

  1183. from this passage.

1184. And John Owen was brought into

  1185. an amazingly new experience

  1186. that Christ was his

  1187. and he was Christ's.

1188. And the wonderful thing is

1189. he was never able to discover

1190. the name of the man

1191. who had preached the sermon.

  1192. And I can't help thinking

1193. that if you did actually come here

1194. because somebody said to you,

1195. you need to go and hear

  1196. Cory Brock

  1197. in St. Columbus

  1198. in Edinburgh.

  1199. And

1200. you kind of groaned inwardly

  1201. when he said,

  1202. it's an old Scotsman

1203. who's going to be here.

  1204. And

  1205. if that's the case,

  1206. please God,

  1207. you forget his name.

  1208. But if this

  1209. was Owen's story,

1210. it can be your story

  1211. too.

1212. Because this is what Jesus

  1213. is like.

1214. And this is what he wants

  1215. to be like

  1216. for you.

1217. And he did get them

  1218. to the other side.

  1219. And he'll get you

  1220. too

  1221. if you trust him

  1222. to the other side.

  1223. Let's pray together.

1224. Lord, we thank you for

  1225. these

  1226. wonderfully simple

  1227. stories

  1228. that these

  1229. four men

  1230. under the guidance

  1231. of your

  1232. loving Holy Spirit

  1233. penned

  1234. for people

  1235. they knew

  1236. and loved,

  1237. but also

  1238. for people

  1239. that

  1240. they loved

  1241. but never knew,

  1242. including

  1243. ourselves.

  1244. And we pray,

  1245. Lord,

  1246. as we

  1247. think about

  1248. the Lord Jesus,

  1249. see him

  1250. as someone

  1251. who does not

  1252. break

  1253. bruised reeds

  1254. or snuff out

  1255. dimly burning

  1256. wicks,

  1257. but comes to us

  1258. in our need

  1259. and our distress,

  1260. that in his

  1261. providence

  1262. he has

  1263. unpacked

  1264. for us.

  1265. And when we

  1266. sometimes cry,

  1267. Lord,

  1268. do you not really

  1269. care about me?

  1270. We pray that we

  1271. may see who

  1272. he really is

  1273. find him

  1274. in his

  1275. grace

  1276. and glory

  1277. and trust

  1278. him

  1279. not only

  1280. in the areas

  1281. where we feel

  1282. inadequate

  1283. and incapacitated,

  1284. but in those

  1285. areas where we

  1286. foolishly think

  1287. that we

  1288. know best.

  1289. So,

  1290. we

  1291. give ourselves

  1292. to you

  1293. with

  1294. faith

  1295. and

  1296. joy

  1297. and

  1298. the assurance

  1299. that you

  1300. will see

  1301. us

  1302. home

  1303. to the

  1304. other

  1305. side.

  1306. So,

  1307. impress this

  1308. on us

  1309. we pray

  1310. as we

  1311. thank you

  1312. for your

  1313. word

  1314. in Jesus

  1315. name.

  1316. Amen.

  1317. Thank you.
