  1. Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah.

  2. ! It is wonderful that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah,

  3. either by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. First of all, would you pray for us

  4. that we will open God's Word well to His glory and for the good of people like yourself?

  5. The second thing is, if you aren't connected to a church and if you are a Christian,

  6. we really, I would really like to encourage you to find a good local church where they believe the

  7. Bible, they preach the gospel, and if you have some trouble finding that, send us an email. We will do

  8. what we can to help connect you with a good local church wherever you are. And if you're a non-Christian,

  9. checking us out, we're really, really, really glad you're doing that. Don't hesitate to send us

  10. questions. It helps me actually to know, as I'm preaching, how to deal with the types of things

  11. that you're really struggling with. So God bless.

  12. What I'm about to say might be a bit of a trigger for some people, and I don't apologize for it,

  13. because it's important to talk about. But I just want to let you know, because the text has actually

  14. something very important to talk about in terms of sexual violence against women. And so I know that

  15. there might be women here who have been victims, or maybe even being victims of sexual violence. And

  16. so this could be a bit hard. Even me saying this could be a bit hard. All I could say is, if it is

  17. hard, we would love to walk with you and pray with you. And if you need some help in pursuing justice,

  18. we would love to walk with you as you pursue that. But I'm not just saying this just because it would be

  19. a good thing to get your attention at the beginning, although I probably, most of you thought when you

  20. were coming to church today, I wouldn't begin my sermon with something like that. But during this

  21. season of Advent, we're going to do four songs of the Savior. And all of them are in the Gospel of Luke.

  22. And the first one we're going to look at is what's called the Magnificat, or Mary's Song. And it's sung by

  23. Mary after she, well, we'll get to it in the story, but it's before the birth of Jesus. Next Sunday, we're going to

  24. look at Zedekiah's song after John the Baptist is born and before the birth of Jesus. And on the third Sunday,

  25. we're going to look at the song that the angels sang to the shepherds to announce that Jesus was born. And then on the

  26. Sunday before Christmas, we're going to look at the song that Simeon sang over the baby Jesus. And that's called the

  27. Nunc Dimittis, for those of you who are familiar with that from maybe classical music or liturgy. And it's very

  28. interesting. So if you turn your Bibles, it's, I'm going to, well, it was going to be in Luke chapter one. And here's the

  29. thing about it. So what goes on before Mary's Song? If you don't know what goes on before Mary's Song, then Mary's Song doesn't

  30. make any sense. And so what's happened just before this is that the angel Gabriel has appeared to a young woman by the name of

  31. Mary. And Mary was probably 15 years old. In those days, engagements were about a year. So she probably would have been

  32. married around 16. So she's probably 15 when he has this visit from the angel and she would be in her home. And she's Jewish. And

  33. she's of lower working class background. And she lives in Nowheresville, even in terms of the Jewish world and in terms of

  34. ultimately the colonizing power of Rome, the great Roman Empire. She's a very, very, very low status. And she, if, if, and they

  35. would think Jerusalem was Nowheresville. So this is like Nowheresville squared where she is. And she's in, in her house, probably. And all of a sudden, an angel appears from

  36. God and speaks to her. And when he speaks to her, he says that she's favored. Basically, he says that the Most High God would like to use her to be the vehicle or the means by which God, the Son of God, would enter into the human story.

  37. That the great invasion, which has been promised in the scriptures for centuries, is about to take place.

  38. And that the Son of God himself will be born through her. And after he says these things to her, Mary asks some clarifying questions. Because she's not dumb, she's smart. And she knows how babies are born.

  39. One of the problems we have regularly reading the Bible is that we think because we have things like TikTok and Instagram, we're smarter than older people who didn't have those things.

  40. Although, as increasing research shows, you might actually be smarter before TikTok and Instagram than after you've gotten immersed in it.

  41. But she's smart. She knows how babies are born. And she says, well, how on earth is this going to be? I've never known a man sexually. I'm a virgin.

  42. And then Gabriel, on behalf of God, says, well, the Holy Spirit's going to overshadow you.

  43. And God is going to do a miracle within your womb. And you will become pregnant.

  44. Now, it's very interesting, I think, that Luke is the only one of the gospel writers who tells this story.

  45. And it's interesting for this reason. Luke was a pagan who became a Christian.

  46. That means that the guy who wrote this was a man who would have worshipped the Roman and Greek gods and goddesses as part of his just normal habit.

  47. He would have been involved in the worship and sacrifice into these deities from childhood.

  48. From childhood, it would have been deeply ingrained in him.

  49. And then somewhere along the line, we're not told how, he becomes a Christian.

  50. He leaves behind the pagan deities and pledges himself to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  51. He pledges himself to the God revealed in Jesus and to Jesus himself.

  52. And so Luke, after he becomes a Christian, by the way, if you go back and read it from the start,

  53. what he did is he went and decided he would go and talk to as many eyewitnesses as he could find and put together the true story of Jesus,

  54. write a biography of Jesus, and he did that while many eyewitnesses were still alive.

  55. But he probably put this thing in here in a way that maybe the Jewish writers who wrote the other biographies of Jesus from a time of eyewitnesses might not have thought of.

  56. Because he would have known that when it comes to this point in the time of the story,

  57. that an angel, a representative of God, has come to speak to Mary,

  58. to say that this is what the God of, the triune God would like to do,

  59. he would know, and maybe this was how he experienced it the first time,

  60. there would be a bit of a catch in his chest.

  61. And that's because the gods of the ancient world raped women.

  62. The gods of the ancient world were serial rapists.

  63. And so he would have, when he heard this story for the first time,

  64. he would have been going, maybe even expecting a certain particular thing to happen.

  65. But what happens would have blown his mind and blown his entire religious categories.

  66. Because the angel, the representative, the triune God, waits for Mary's consent.

  67. Waits for Mary's consent.

  68. In the ancient world, a Roman, I mean, not that all men would have been rapists,

  69. but a Roman man, a Greek man, a well-educated man, a common man,

  70. would have said the idea that a woman needs to give consent

  71. is against all piety and against all reason.

  72. Because surely all of our worship and our understanding of the gods

  73. is that the strong and the powerful can do whatever they want

  74. without the consent of other people.

  75. The gods regularly send others out to die on their behalf and for their own glory.

  76. And obviously that's the case.

  77. And obviously that's just what reason tells you,

  78. that the strong can do what they want with the weak.

  79. And that's how society is organized.

  80. It's part of our cultural norms,

  81. that those things are completely and utterly valid.

  82. And it would have not just been in the Roman world,

  83. but throughout the entire ancient world,

  84. where things like harems and all were in fact just a commonplace.

  85. Because of course, once again with harems,

  86. is that powerful men can accumulate as many women as they want,

  87. usually without their will,

  88. to satisfy their sexual desires.

  89. And in the history of the entire world,

  90. all of a sudden,

  91. there is something which blows these categories

  92. completely and utterly up.

  93. You see, in the ancient world,

  94. the gods can rape and the powerful can rape,

  95. then why can't I?

  96. If I'm a man and I'm strong enough.

  97. But if the Most High Triune God needs consent,

  98. every man needs consent,

  99. with no exception.

  100. And it's very interesting that this story isn't just sort of like one of those things

  101. where it's a little tiny aside,

  102. buried in a whole pile of other types of things

  103. that you just sort of all of it,

  104. you just skip over.

  105. This is actually part of the central,

  106. part of the,

  107. if you were to take the whole story of Jesus,

  108. and that's unbelievably foundational for all Christians,

  109. and yet even within that,

  110. if you were to take a couple of the high moments,

  111. like if you were to tell some kids about the high moments of the story of Jesus,

  112. the story of the birth of Jesus

  113. would be one of those high moments in that particular story.

  114. And so right at that high moment of the high story

  115. is this idea of consent.

  116. And the history of thinking begins to change at this moment.

  117. I told several people this week,

  118. some of my non-Christian friends,

  119. I had two opportunities to talk to people

  120. who are outside the Christian faith this week,

  121. and they happened to ask me about my sermon.

  122. And I said,

  123. well, you actually might find this very interesting.

  124. You know, I said,

  125. the average Canadian thinks that a woman needing to give consent

  126. for sexual knowing is just common sense and reasonable.

  127. But that's not true.

  128. It's actually a Christian idea.

  129. I tell them what I just told you.

  130. It's a Christian idea.

  131. It came into the world through the Bible.

  132. That's how the idea came to be.

  133. And so for people now in the world

  134. who think it's just reasonable,

  135. it's in fact a memory of a memory of a memory of a memory of a memory

  136. of this central story which has now formed you.

  137. And in fact, I said,

  138. if you think about it for a second,

  139. one of the two or three governing stories

  140. that govern how Canadians think

  141. is the naturalistic understanding of evolutionary theory.

  142. And at the heart of that theory is this,

  143. the strong eat the weak,

  144. so the strong survive and the weak die.

  145. And there's no way you can go from the story

  146. of the strong eating the weak

  147. so that the strong survive

  148. to therefore women need to give their consent.

  149. That doesn't fit with that story.

  150. So the only reason that that story

  151. has an overwhelmed consciousness yet in the West

  152. is because of the memory of the memory of the memory

  153. of the memory of this Christian story,

  154. which now seems to be mere common sense

  155. that any thoughtful person would come to understand.

  156. And the key to this, of course, whole story is that it's true.

  157. Because if it's not true,

  158. when I was in high school 100 million years ago,

  159. a very common button that many people would wear,

  160. sort of interesting they'd wear it to school,

  161. would be question authority.

  162. Another version was who says.

  163. They'd wear it into class.

  164. Who says?

  165. Question authority.

  166. Well, if this story is just a story amongst other stories,

  167. then it actually, you can just say,

  168. well, who says?

  169. But Christians believe this is what actually happened.

  170. It's a true story of what actually happened.

  171. And so in the story,

  172. if you just turn in your Bibles to verse 36,

  173. sorry, verse 38, it says this.

  174. And when the angel says to Mary about these things,

  175. and he says, nothing will be impossible with God,

  176. in verse 38 of chapter 1,

  177. Mary said,

  178. Behold, I am the servant of the Lord,

  179. the doulos of the Lord.

  180. That's what the word literally means, doulos.

  181. Let it be to me according to your word.

  182. And the angel departed from her.

  183. And there's these two very, very powerful parts of her answer.

  184. She first of all says to the Lord,

  185. not to the angel, but to the Lord,

  186. I will be your doulos.

  187. That means it's a certain type of servant.

  188. It's not like a slave,

  189. but it's more than just like somebody

  190. that you'd hire to clean your house.

  191. It means I desire to belong to you.

  192. And as belonging to you,

  193. I trust that you will be the one who will care for me

  194. and provide for me.

  195. And whatever you say, I will do.

  196. I will do.

  197. That's her response to the angel.

  198. And it's a very, very powerful prayer.

  199. And we're going to return to it in a moment

  200. in terms of all of its significance.

  201. But that's her response to what is said.

  202. And it's within this whole context

  203. that you now have to understand the Magnificat,

  204. which we're going to look at.

  205. And here's how it goes.

  206. Immediately after this,

  207. Mary goes to see a relative named Elizabeth.

  208. She's had a different type of miraculous.

  209. Oh, I missed something.

  210. The moment that Mary says her consent to God,

  211. God does a miracle and implants a zygote

  212. connected to the womb of Mary.

  213. Mary says yes.

  214. And God creates a zygote connected to the womb of Mary.

  215. And Mary's pregnant.

  216. It's a miracle.

  217. She's now pregnant.

  218. She goes to see Elizabeth.

  219. Elizabeth and her.

  220. Elizabeth ends up having a prophetic word

  221. and pronouncing some prophetic words over Mary.

  222. It's both a very charismatic and a very musical thing

  223. that she sings over her.

  224. And after she says,

  225. after Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit

  226. and pronounces this prophetic word in song over Mary,

  227. Mary then does what's called the Magnificat.

  228. And so if you turn in your Bibles,

  229. it's Luke chapter 1, verse 46 and following.

    Luke 1:46

  230. And just as you're turning that,

  231. something here which is really, really cool,

  232. which is this.

  233. It's at least since the early 700s,

  234. Christians who've decided to worship

  235. and pray together at night

  236. have included this

  237. as part of their time of Bible reading and prayer,

  238. the Magnificat.

  239. Since the early 700s.

  240. That means there's 1,300 years

  241. that many Christians have thought

  242. that if you want to spend time on a Sunday evening

  243. or any evening reading the Bible and praying,

  244. you should include this as one of the readings

  245. to help form you

  246. in terms of how to pray

  247. and how to read the Bible.

  248. Like, isn't that cool?

  249. And in the Greek part of the world,

  250. the part of the ancient world

  251. that spoke Greek, not Latin,

  252. that begins around the same time

  253. when they'd put it in the morning,

  254. not the evening.

  255. And you get an echo of this

  256. or a remnant of all of this

  257. that if you go and get

  258. the Book of Common Prayer,

  259. you'll see that it is, in fact,

  260. one of the regular canticles

  261. of evening prayer, even song.

  262. And anyway, here's the song

  263. and here's what goes on in it.

  264. So we have the context

  265. of God approaching Mary.

  266. She gives her this yes.

  267. She's now pregnant with the Most High God,

  268. the Son of God,

  269. the Savior of the world,

  270. and she bursts into song.

  271. What we're going to do,

  272. I'm going to read the whole song.

  273. It's just very short.

  274. Then we'll circle back

  275. and we'll look at it,

  276. three things in particular

  277. that are very important to us.

  278. And so in verse 46,

  279. it goes,

  280. Mary said,

  281. my soul magnifies...

  282. By the way,

  283. one of the things is,

  284. if you go to do even song,

  285. there's an even song way

  286. of singing it.

  287. My soul doth magnify the Lord

  288. and my spirit hath rejoiced

  289. in God my Savior.

  290. Anyway, that's if you do

  291. the prayer book.

  292. But it's also been the case

  293. that people have

  294. metrical versions of this.

  295. And during our offertory,

  296. we're going to sing

  297. the Magnificat

  298. with a metrical version

  299. that goes back

  300. to around the year 1600.

  301. So pretty old.

  302. And we're going to sing it

  303. during the offertory

  304. as I'm setting the table

  305. for the Lord's Supper.

  306. But here's how it goes right now.

  307. My soul magnifies the Lord

  308. and my spirit rejoices

  309. in God my Savior.

  310. For he has looked

  311. on the humble estate

  312. of his servant.

  313. For behold,

  314. from now on...

  315. Here we are

  316. in Ottawa

  317. in 2025

  318. reading this text

  319. that she's blessed.

  320. That's just

  321. fulfilled prophecy.

  322. You think of all

  323. the different prophecies

  324. that oracles would have made

  325. in pagan temples

  326. around this time.

  327. Nobody knows anything

  328. other than maybe

  329. an ultra nerds,

  330. nerds, nerds, nerd

  331. doing a PhD dissertation

  332. in classical studies

  333. looking for some remote topic

  334. of the ancient world

  335. that nobody's written on

  336. and they might find it.

  337. Absolutely nobody

  338. other than their PhDs,

  339. even their PhD supervisors

  340. probably bored with it,

  341. but they have to do it

  342. so the person got the PhD.

  343. But this is true.

  344. It happened.

  345. Like here we are looking at it.

  346. I'll read verse 40.

  347. It's cool.

  348. Like we don't realize.

  349. That's true.

  350. It happened, right?

  351. Look at verse 48 again.

  352. For he has looked

  353. on the humble estate

  354. of his servant.

  355. For behold,

  356. from now on

  357. all generations

  358. will call me blessed.

  359. For he who is mighty

  360. has done great things

  361. for me

  362. and holy is his name.

  363. And his mercy

  364. is for those who fear him

  365. from generation to generation.

  366. He has shown strength

  367. with his arm.

  368. He has scattered the proud

  369. and the thoughts

  370. of their hearts.

  371. He has brought down

  372. the mighty from their thrones

  373. and exalted those

  374. of humble estate.

  375. He has filled the hungry

  376. with good things

  377. and the rich.

  378. He has sent away empty.

  379. He has helped his servant Israel

  380. in remembrance of his mercy

  381. as he spoke to our fathers,

  382. to Abraham

  383. and to his offspring forever.

  384. That's Mary's song,

  385. the Magnificat.

  386. Now,

  387. why do you think

  388. that this might be something

  389. that for 1300 years

  390. many Christians have thought

  391. would be a worthy part

  392. if you're going to have

  393. some Bible reading

  394. and some prayer?

  395. Let's also read this.

  396. Why would they have thought that?

  397. And they'd put in a creed

  398. in the Lord's Prayer.

  399. A couple of things like that

  400. to help form you.

  401. Well, let's look at the words.

  402. I think you'll start to see

  403. why they would want to do it.

  404. So first of all,

  405. look at that.

  406. We'll go to verse 46 again.

  407. My soul magnifies the Lord

  408. and my spirit

  409. has rejoiced in God my Savior.

  410. And soul and spirit,

  411. it's just creating

  412. some poetic parallelism there.

  413. But here's the first thing

  414. to understand.

  415. We moderns,

  416. when we think of this,

  417. we think of the soul

  418. as being something

  419. sort of wispy

  420. and immaterial

  421. somewhere in here.

  422. But early Christians

  423. would have said

  424. they would have looked at us

  425. puzzled if we thought that

  426. because we tend to think

  427. of things like soul

  428. as something a bit emotional

  429. and hence therefore

  430. wispy and changeable.

  431. The ancients would have

  432. understand that

  433. not that the soul

  434. is hiding somewhere

  435. in the body,

  436. but that the body

  437. is in the soul.

  438. Now there's,

  439. that's something

  440. to blow your mind.

  441. The body is in the soul.

  442. In other words,

  443. what a human being is,

  444. is I am an enfleshed

  445. or embodied

  446. or material soul.

  447. And so when she says

  448. my soul magnifies the Lord

  449. and my spirit rejoices

  450. in God my Savior,

  451. she's not saying

  452. this little tiny bit

  453. of emotional bit of me,

  454. no, do you have soul,

  455. is what's magnifying the Lord.

  456. All of her is magnifying the Lord.

  457. That's, that's,

  458. and so here we can start

  459. to see why it's something

  460. that Christians would think

  461. is good to read

  462. because it's saying

  463. my mind, my will,

  464. my affections,

  465. my imagination,

  466. my creativity,

  467. my desires,

  468. my sexuality,

  469. my use of money,

  470. my relationship

  471. with other people,

  472. my relationship

  473. with power,

  474. my soul,

  475. all of me magnifies

  476. the Lord.

  477. And what does

  478. this word magnify?

  479. It's very easy

  480. to get that misunderstood

  481. because it's not a word

  482. that generally is used

  483. in modern English.

  484. And a lot of modern

  485. translations avoid using it.

  486. But it's, I think,

  487. one of those cases

  488. where I can understand

  489. for devotional,

  490. you don't,

  491. you don't want to avoid words

  492. that people don't understand.

  493. But in a church,

  494. it's part of a church's

  495. obligation to help us

  496. understand words.

  497. And so the word magnify,

  498. when we think of it,

  499. we tend to think of it

  500. as like I'm a really big

  501. human being

  502. with a really big mind

  503. and I need to see

  504. some little tiny bit

  505. of bacteria.

  506. So I get a,

  507. you know,

  508. I get a something

  509. that I can magnify it

  510. because I'm big

  511. and that's small.

  512. And, and,

  513. but you get in there

  514. within the idea.

  515. That's not what it's saying.

  516. You know,

  517. the idea of magnify

  518. is to,

  519. to,

  520. to make big,

  521. to make much of,

  522. to see as being

  523. really important

  524. as something that,

  525. whether it's in your

  526. inside voice,

  527. speaking to yourself

  528. or your outside voice

  529. that you want to,

  530. you want to think about

  531. and say,

  532. wow,

  533. that's really big.

  534. That's really awesome.

  535. That's really glorious.

  536. That's really beautiful.

  537. That's really true.

  538. Wow.

  539. You want to have the wow

  540. and,

  541. and have things

  542. that you say wow about

  543. and that's what magnifying means.

  544. So it says,

  545. my soul magnifies the Lord

  546. and my spirit rejoices

  547. in God,

  548. my savior.

  549. And,

  550. and,

  551. and,

  552. and some of us Christians

  553. say,

  554. okay,

  555. I can start to see that

  556. because surely

  557. that would be one of those things

  558. when you're reading the Bible,

  559. you want to be hearing things

  560. that,

  561. that not,

  562. not the woes,

  563. but why,

  564. why God is so great

  565. and why we need to make sure

  566. that he's part of our internal thoughts

  567. and dialogue

  568. and,

  569. and,

  570. and,

  571. and,

  572. and things that we say,

  573. rather than having things

  574. that we say all the time

  575. of boy,

  576. you're stupid,

  577. boy,

  578. you're ugly,

  579. you know,

  580. boy,

  581. boy,

  582. you're a failure,

  583. you know,

  584. boy,

  585. you'll never announce anything,

  586. you know,

  587. gosh,

  588. you're a failure.

  589. Like,

  590. rather than having that type

  591. of an internal voice

  592. going on in your mind,

  593. wouldn't it be better

  594. to talk about

  595. how great the Lord is?

  596. How great the Lord is?

  597. To realize

  598. that maybe part of the task

  599. of being a Christian

  600. is to change

  601. how the talk

  602. inside your head

  603. goes

  604. and the talk

  605. of your outdoor lips

  606. as well,

  607. your outside lips

  608. as well.

  609. But there's even

  610. something more than this

  611. because,

  612. you see,

  613. a lot of people

  614. would say,

  615. and you can think

  616. of here different people,

  617. maybe you can think

  618. of the type of person,

  619. you know,

  620. likes going to bars

  621. and very secular,

  622. or maybe you can think

  623. of somebody

  624. who's in a boardroom

  625. or,

  626. you know,

  627. a university professor,

  628. very secular,

  629. and they hear something

  630. like that and they do this.

  631. Lean back and say,

  632. well,

  633. okay,

  634. I mean,

  635. if that turns your crank,

  636. that's fine.

  637. But I don't magnify

  638. things like that.

  639. I don't magnify

  640. things like that.

  641. If that turns your crank,

  642. that's fine.

  643. Now,

  644. you know what's so funny

  645. about that?

  646. They just magnified

  647. themselves.

  648. They do magnify.

  649. They just don't want

  650. to magnify the Lord,

  651. but they're quite happy

  652. to magnify themselves.

  653. Right?

  654. I'm not that sort

  655. of person.

  656. Like,

  657. you little people,

  658. you do it,

  659. but I'm not that type

  660. of person.

  661. So here's the thing.

  662. The question is not,

  663. will I magnify?

  664. The question is,

  665. what are you

  666. currently magnifying?

  667. That's the question.

  668. And are you even

  669. conscious

  670. of what you magnify?

  671. Or are you the victim

  672. of your unconscious

  673. magnifying?

  674. And if you become

  675. conscious of what

  676. you magnify,

  677. should you really

  678. magnify that?

  679. Like,

  680. are you able

  681. to change

  682. what you magnify?

  683. Let me tell you,

  684. for the average

  685. Canadian,

  686. and probably the,

  687. and when I say

  688. average Canadian,

  689. I conclude

  690. average Christians,

  691. the average Canadian

  692. magnifies fear.

  693. fear.

  694. The average Canadian

  695. magnifies fear.

  696. Your algorithms

  697. push it.

  698. I know I'm

  699. 100 million years

  700. old,

  701. and,

  702. but I'm guessing

  703. that if in the

  704. very dawn of things

  705. you go back

  706. and there was going

  707. to be five or

  708. ten centimeters

  709. of snow,

  710. and if you had

  711. something that you

  712. could look up,

  713. or maybe you would

  714. just call up the

  715. weatherman or whatever,

  716. it wouldn't be like

  717. the apps now,

  718. which have these

  719. bold red things

  720. to make you afraid

  721. of all the snow

  722. that's going to come.

  723. Like,

  724. if I had told my

  725. parents,

  726. oh,

  727. mom and dad,

  728. there's going to be

  729. like seven or eight

  730. centimeters of snow,

  731. maybe I shouldn't

  732. go to school.

  733. They would have

  734. cuffed me on the

  735. side of the head

  736. and said,

  737. off you go to school.

  738. Right?

  739. But they want to

  740. make you afraid

  741. about the weather.

  742. Not about the weather.

  743. I mean,

  744. Ottawa,

  745. it snows in Ottawa.

  746. Like,

  747. if you're just

  748. a brand new Canadian

  749. and you've come

  750. from,

  751. like,

  752. Hawaii,

  753. and they didn't

  754. tell you there snows

  755. in Ottawa in January,

  756. you need to ask

  757. your money back,

  758. right?

  759. Because it snows,

  760. right?

  761. Like,

  762. obviously there can

  763. be lots of snow,

  764. but I'm being very

  765. trivial.

  766. But the fact is,

  767. we magnify our fears.

  768. That's one thing

  769. that Canadians do.

  770. We magnify anxiety

  771. and we magnify worry.

  772. That's a common

  773. type of thing.

  774. It's why so many

  775. people want to do

  776. drugs and drink alcohol

  777. and do a whole pile

  778. of other types of things

  779. because we magnify fear.

  780. And that's separate

  781. from the fact

  782. or connected

  783. to the fact,

  784. actually,

  785. that we magnify

  786. ourselves,

  787. we magnify sex,

  788. we magnify money,

  789. we magnify power,

  790. we magnify

  791. academic accomplishment,

  792. we magnify

  793. our creative accomplishment,

  794. we magnify

  795. our reputation,

  796. we magnify,

  797. we magnify,

  798. we magnify,

  799. we magnify,

  800. and we come together

  801. on a Sunday night

  802. to say some prayers

  803. as people who are

  804. magnifying these things

  805. and Mary teaches us

  806. to magnify the Lord.

  807. And my spirit

  808. rejoices in God,

  809. my Savior.

  810. See,

  811. the fact of the matter

  812. is that many

  813. of the things

  814. that we magnify

  815. actually only make

  816. us more anxious.

  817. If you magnify money,

  818. you never have

  819. enough money.

  820. If you magnify

  821. academic achievement,

  822. you never have

  823. enough academic achievement.

  824. If you magnify

  825. your looks,

  826. bad news,

  827. everybody ages.

  828. Wrinkles

  829. and dimples

  830. where they're not cute

  831. are the future

  832. of every person.

  833. But some people

  834. might say,

  835. here's the problem.

  836. They'd say,

  837. okay,

  838. that all sounds good,

  839. George,

  840. but I mean,

  841. the Savior bit?

  842. I mean,

  843. why on earth

  844. do they want to say,

  845. make you say,

  846. my soul magnifies the Lord,

  847. my spirit rejoices in God,

  848. my Savior?

  849. I mean,

  850. George,

  851. that's one of the things

  852. which I've never

  853. really understood.

  854. about,

  855. you know,

  856. about Christianity.

  857. So,

  858. I mean,

  859. there's two things here,

  860. George,

  861. that I don't really understand.

  862. The first one is this,

  863. that,

  864. you know,

  865. so you want to make God

  866. really big.

  867. You know,

  868. that's what you're really

  869. sort of saying,

  870. right?

  871. So you want to make God big.

  872. You want to understand him

  873. as really being big

  874. and worthy of extolling

  875. and understanding

  876. just how big he is.

  877. You want to have all of that

  878. and then you want to make big

  879. the fact that you're going

  880. to be saved.

  881. But,

  882. George,

  883. here's the problem,

  884. George,

  885. that don't you think

  886. that it's better

  887. if God just taught me

  888. how to save myself.

  889. Like,

  890. it sounds a little bit

  891. to me,

  892. George,

  893. like,

  894. you know those old movies

  895. from the 50s

  896. and the 60s

  897. where some man

  898. had to rescue a woman

  899. because women

  900. couldn't rescue

  901. or save themselves?

  902. And haven't we evolved

  903. to the point now

  904. where we understand

  905. that that's like

  906. a really dumb thing

  907. to teach people?

  908. Like,

  909. why teach women

  910. that men have to come

  911. and save them?

  912. Like,

  913. why don't we teach women

  914. that they can save themselves,

  915. that they can punch

  916. the bad guy,

  917. they can handle the guns,

  918. they can do the kicks,

  919. they can do the cleverness?

  920. Like,

  921. and if that,

  922. if we've learned that

  923. about men and women,

  924. like,

  925. why,

  926. like,

  927. George,

  928. I don't understand

  929. this whole thing

  930. about why,

  931. so not only do I not understand

  932. how,

  933. just talking about

  934. how big God is,

  935. like,

  936. George,

  937. don't you think

  938. that this idea

  939. of big God,

  940. doesn't that just often

  941. just crush people?

  942. Like,

  943. there's lots of religions,

  944. like,

  945. every religion really

  946. other than maybe paganism

  947. talks about the bigness of God,

  948. like pantheism,

  949. I mean,

  950. everything is God,

  951. that's bigger than you

  952. and,

  953. and Islam,

  954. God is huge

  955. and look at all the terrible

  956. things that come from it

  957. and,

  958. and so I don't understand

  959. why that just God

  960. being really big

  961. is something that would

  962. be helpful to me

  963. and,

  964. and reduce my anxiety.

  965. If it did,

  966. like,

  967. that would be interesting

  968. and,

  969. and why,

  970. why this,

  971. all this talk about

  972. God needing to save me,

  973. it just sounds so like

  974. fifties

  975. and,

  976. and not in a,

  977. not in a good way.

  978. Well,

  979. those are good observations.

  980. Let's look at how Mary

  981. deals with these types

  982. of,

  983. of problems

  984. that we might have

  985. with that,

  986. whether we say it out loud

  987. or just sort of in our soul

  988. because it's part of

  989. how our culture thinks.

  990. Look at verse 46 again,

  991. my soul magnifies the Lord

  992. and my spirit rejoices

  993. in God,

  994. my Savior.

  995. Verse 49,

  996. 48,

  997. for he has looked

  998. on the humble estate

  999. of his servant.

  1000. For behold,

  1001. from now on

  1002. all generations

  1003. will call me blessed.

1004. For he who is mighty

  1005. has done great things

  1006. for me

1007. and holy is his name.

  1008. And his mercy

  1009. is for those

  1010. who fear him

  1011. from generation

  1012. to generation.

  1013. generation.

  1014. Now,

  1015. we'll just pause here

  1016. for a second.

  1017. This is the first

  1018. of the two types

  1019. of reasons

  1020. about,

  1021. you know,

  1022. the types of problems

  1023. we might have

  1024. with this.

  1025. I think when I was young,

  1026. I would have thought

  1027. that my greatest need

  1028. was justice.

  1029. I needed more justice

  1030. from my teachers.

  1031. I needed more justice

  1032. from my parents.

  1033. I needed more justice

  1034. from my friends.

  1035. Now,

1036. it probably is the case

  1037. that I did need

  1038. some justice

  1039. from people

  1040. like that.

1041. But as I get older,

  1042. I realize that

  1043. my greatest need

  1044. isn't justice.

  1045. My greatest need

  1046. is mercy.

  1047. I mean,

  1048. one of the things

  1049. that we need

  1050. to learn in marriage,

  1051. I mean,

  1052. you know,

  1053. I probably would have

  1054. heard this,

  1055. that when you marry

  1056. somebody,

  1057. you're marrying a sinner.

  1058. You're a sinner

  1059. marrying a sinner

  1060. in marriage.

1061. But one of the things

  1062. that really becomes

  1063. very obvious

  1064. as you get married,

  1065. and maybe it's not

  1066. obvious,

  1067. it takes a while

  1068. for it to penetrate

  1069. people like me

1070. who had very thick skulls

  1071. and are clueless,

  1072. is a marriage won't survive

  1073. unless the other person

  1074. shows you mercy.

  1075. It just won't survive

  1076. without mercy being shown.

  1077. Because marriage reveals

1078. not only that the other person

  1079. is a sinner,

  1080. but marriage reveals

  1081. how big a sinner

  1082. you actually are yourself.

  1083. I actually am myself.

1084. And so what I really need

  1085. to have any type

  1086. of intimacy,

1087. and that even in friendship,

  1088. what we often need

  1089. in friends primarily

  1090. is mercy.

  1091. Now,

  1092. what the Bible teaches

  1093. isn't cheap mercy,

  1094. but costly mercy

  1095. and true mercy.

  1096. Cheap mercy

  1097. is where the powerful

  1098. ignore justice

  1099. for pet causes

  1100. or favoritism.

1101. We have a bit of a problem

  1102. with that right now

1103. going on with the courts,

  1104. that there's a problem,

  1105. to talk once again

  1106. about the sexual matters,

1107. that there seems to be

  1108. a problem right now

  1109. in the courts

  1110. of judges deciding

1111. that they're going to dismiss

  1112. minimal sentences

  1113. or throw things out.

  1114. And that doesn't

  1115. cost them anything.

1116. And a lot of Canadians

  1117. are thinking

1118. that just makes no sense

1119. from a justice point of view

  1120. that how they're treating

  1121. people who are pedophiles

  1122. and rapists

  1123. and sexual violence,

  1124. and they're getting passes,

  1125. or privileged groups

  1126. are getting passes,

  1127. and it's causing

  1128. a tiny bit of a start

  1129. of a scandal,

1130. at least in some circles.

  1131. But they might say

  1132. they're showing mercy,

1133. but they're not showing mercy.

  1134. They've just thrown

  1135. justice out the window.

  1136. True mercy

  1137. does not at all

  1138. ever contradict justice.

  1139. And only the gospel

1140. and only the biblical faith

1141. makes that very, very clear.

  1142. You know, it's not

  1143. that well-known,

  1144. but did you know

  1145. that in Islam,

  1146. I can't remember the surah,

  1147. in Islam,

  1148. everybody who dies

  1149. goes to hell.

  1150. And then before

  1151. those jihadis

  1152. who've killed people

1153. get to go to the

  1154. Islamic heaven

1155. and have the perpetual virgins

1156. to their pleasure and delight,

1157. they actually go to hell first,

  1158. and then Allah says

  1159. he'll go to hell

  1160. and he'll pick out

  1161. those lucky ones

1162. whom he's going to send

  1163. up to his heaven.

  1164. But even then,

1165. there's no type of justice.

1166. He just picks the people.

  1167. But you see,

  1168. here's where the story

  1169. of Mary is so

  1170. and unbelievably powerful

  1171. and why it's so

  1172. emotionally rich.

1173. The story of Mary's song

  1174. begins with this revelation

1175. that God, the Son of God,

  1176. is about to enter

  1177. into the human condition

  1178. and enter into

  1179. the human world.

1180. And he enters very lowly.

  1181. He enters the way

  1182. we all enter,

  1183. as a zygote,

1184. attached to our mother's womb

  1185. and goes through

  1186. the entire process

  1187. of gestation and birth

  1188. and a helpless infant

  1189. and then works

1190. as a lower working class man

  1191. and all of that.

  1192. And then this story

1193. is the beginning of a story

1194. that ends in Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24 chapter mention

1195. and before we get to that,

1196. we get to the point

  1197. of the whole story

  1198. that changes the story,

  1199. which is God,

  1200. the Son of God,

  1201. dying on the cross

  1202. despite the fact

  1203. that he's innocent.

  1204. And we even get

  1205. within that whole story

  1206. that it's only in Luke's gospel

1207. we get the famous account

  1208. of the two thieves

  1209. who were crucified

1210. on either side of him.

  1211. And if you read

  1212. the other gospels,

1213. each of those two thieves

  1214. called Jesus' names

  1215. and insulted him

1216. for a lot of the day,

1217. but at some point in time,

  1218. close to the time

1219. at the end when they die,

  1220. one of the thieves,

  1221. seeing Jesus

  1222. and how he is

  1223. and his silence

  1224. and his dignity

1225. has a change of heart

1226. and rebukes the other person

  1227. who's insulting Jesus

1228. and then turns to Jesus

  1229. and in an act

  1230. of very profound faith

1231. that none of us have.

  1232. He says,

  1233. Jesus,

1234. can I be with you

  1235. when you enter

  1236. into your glory?

1237. And Jesus turns to him

  1238. and says,

1239. today you will be with me

  1240. in paradise.

  1241. See, in a sense,

  1242. the whole gospel

  1243. is pointing us

1244. to this point in time

  1245. that because God is,

  1246. Jesus is God,

  1247. the Son of God,

  1248. he truly can stand

1249. for every single human being.

  1250. And so the justice

1251. that I need to have

  1252. that falls upon me,

  1253. Jesus says,

  1254. would you, George,

  1255. consider me

  1256. to be your master

  1257. and allow me,

1258. would you come into my life

  1259. and allow me

1260. to come into your life

  1261. so that the things

1262. that should happen to you

  1263. that will completely

  1264. and utterly ruin you

  1265. forever,

  1266. for all eternity,

  1267. I am willing

1268. to have them fall on me

  1269. because I want

  1270. to show you mercy

  1271. and the justice

1272. that should fall on you

  1273. will fall on me.

  1274. so that you might

  1275. know my mercy.

1276. And if you say yes

  1277. to that,

  1278. that you will be

  1279. my servant

  1280. and that you will

  1281. let everything

  1282. according to your word

  1283. be true of me,

1284. then my word to you

1285. is that on the day

  1286. of your death

  1287. you will enter

  1288. into my paradise,

  1289. my kingdom.

1290. And so in the death

  1291. of Jesus,

  1292. you see God's justice

  1293. maintained

  1294. and you see mercy

  1295. offered to those

  1296. like you and me

1297. who are far from God.

1298. and it's in that context

  1299. then,

1300. look at what it says

  1301. again in verse 50.

  1302. And his mercy

  1303. is for those

  1304. who fear him

  1305. from generation to generation.

  1306. Now,

  1307. you can go back

  1308. and listen to my

  1309. Ecclesiastes sermons

  1310. about what the fear

  1311. of God means.

  1312. It's ultimately

  1313. a term of intimacy

  1314. and self-recognition

  1315. and proper boundaries

  1316. that allow proper love

1317. and you can go back

  1318. and listen to them.

1319. But did you get this?

  1320. When you enter

  1321. into that relationship,

  1322. when in a sense

  1323. you accept

  1324. God's mercy,

  1325. he's for you.

  1326. He's for you.

  1327. Right now,

  1328. today,

  1329. every day,

  1330. until you die,

  1331. he is for you.

  1332. Why would you not

  1333. want to have that

  1334. fill your mind

  1335. and magnify him?

  1336. And what better thing

  1337. can you have

  1338. to magnify him

  1339. than the knowledge

  1340. that his mercy

  1341. is for you

1342. in all of your problems

1343. and all of your mess

  1344. and not for you

  1345. in a way

1346. that there's not going to,

  1347. you shouldn't still

  1348. be concerned for justice,

  1349. you should stand

  1350. for justice,

  1351. you should stand

  1352. against injustice,

  1353. but his mercy

  1354. is for you.

  1355. That's how we're

  1356. to hear the Bible.

  1357. That's how we're

  1358. to pray.

1359. We're to fill our minds

  1360. with the greatness

  1361. and beauty of God,

  1362. the Savior.

1363. And why do we need

  1364. a Savior?

  1365. It's all here

  1366. in the text.

  1367. It's very interesting.

  1368. Look at verses 51

  1369. to the following.

  1370. And by the way,

  1371. just two things

  1372. before I read 51

  1373. to the following.

  1374. The first thing is,

  1375. you'll notice,

  1376. you might say,

  1377. well no,

1378. God hasn't fed the hungry

1379. and God hasn't done this

1380. and God hasn't done all of that,

  1381. not in the way

  1382. it's described,

  1383. but there's an actual

  1384. tense

  1385. in the original language

  1386. which doesn't exist

  1387. in English

  1388. and the tense is

  1389. that there are certain

  1390. things in the future

  1391. that are so absolutely

  1392. guaranteed certain

  1393. that the only way

  1394. to translate it

  1395. into English

1396. is use a past tense.

  1397. So you can't change

  1398. the past?

  1399. This is so certain

  1400. about the future

  1401. you can't change it.

  1402. That's what it is.

  1403. The other thing,

  1404. just as an aside,

  1405. just skip down

  1406. to verse 54.

  1407. He has helped

  1408. his servant Israel

  1409. in remembrance

  1410. of his mercy.

  1411. You can't spiritualize that.

1412. This is a very important text.

  1413. It's not saying

1414. that you have to agree

  1415. with every single thing

1416. that modern day Israel does.

  1417. It's not saying that.

1418. But what it is telling us

1419. is that God's not finished

  1420. with the Jewish people.

1421. The promises he has made

  1422. to the Jewish people

  1423. have not been

  1424. completely finished yet.

  1425. Just as an aside,

  1426. it's really important

  1427. because we live

  1428. in a culture

  1429. increasingly formed

  1430. by anti-Semitism

  1431. to understand

  1432. that this is part

  1433. of Christianity.

  1434. God is not finished

  1435. with Israel

  1436. and the Jewish people.

1437. But go back to 51

  1438. and look.

  1439. He has shown strength

  1440. with his arm.

1441. He has scattered the proud

  1442. and the thoughts

  1443. of their hearts.

  1444. He has brought down

1445. the mighty from their thrones

  1446. and exalted those

  1447. of humble estate.

1448. He has filled the hungry

  1449. with good things

  1450. and the rich

1451. he has sent empty away.

1452. Now just sort of pause there.

  1453. This sounds like

1454. a lot of Hollywood movies,

  1455. doesn't it?

  1456. Like the original

  1457. Mighty Ducks.

1458. You get a whole pile

1459. of the really skinny nerds

  1460. and the tiny nerds

1461. and the way overweight nerds

  1462. and the nerds

  1463. who can hardly

  1464. brush their teeth.

  1465. They're so completely

  1466. incompetent.

  1467. And they come together

  1468. as a team

1469. and they get the coach

  1470. and they defeat

  1471. the team of other

  1472. 13-year-olds

  1473. who all really look

  1474. like they're 23-year-old

  1475. men on steroids

  1476. and the losers win.

  1477. And that's a common theme

  1478. in movies

1479. and we all sort of like it.

1480. And a lot of people

1481. who are far more conservative

  1482. might be bothered

  1483. by texts like this

  1484. because it sounds

  1485. like the worst

  1486. class envy possible

  1487. and as if we're

  1488. completely and utterly

  1489. against rich people

  1490. or people who are

  1491. good at thinking

1492. and we don't like it

  1493. on one level

1494. but in part of it

  1495. we all like that.

  1496. We like the idea

  1497. that the proud

  1498. are going to be

  1499. scattered their thoughts

1500. and we like the fact

  1501. that this text says

  1502. that those who are

  1503. high and mighty

  1504. on their high horses

  1505. and their thrones

1506. are going to be toppled

  1507. and we like that.

  1508. But here's the problem.

  1509. Years ago

  1510. my wife and I

  1511. would have times

1512. when we had to have

  1513. a difficult conversation

  1514. with somebody.

  1515. Not with ourselves

  1516. but with somebody.

1517. And I started to learn

  1518. that there was something

  1519. I needed to say

  1520. because I'd say

  1521. okay yeah yeah

  1522. I agree

  1523. we need to have

  1524. a difficult conversation

  1525. with Bob.

  1526. But if by we

  1527. you mean

  1528. you're going to have

  1529. that difficult conversation

  1530. while I stand

  1531. on the

  1532. and you're

  1533. like looking at

  1534. you going

  1535. way to go Louise

  1536. you're doing great.

  1537. You go for it.

  1538. Then I think

  1539. that's a great plan.

  1540. But if

  1541. by we

  1542. you mean

  1543. I'm going to talk

  1544. to that person

1545. while you look at me

1546. and give me thumbs up

  1547. and smile

1548. then I think we have to

  1549. find a different plan.

  1550. The same thing

  1551. is going on here.

  1552. Who is having

  1553. their thoughts scattered

  1554. because they're proud

  1555. and who are on

  1556. high horses?

  1557. What?

  1558. God's talking about me?

  1559. I'm the proud one

  1560. on my high horse

  1561. and he's going to

  1562. topple me

  1563. and scatter my thoughts?

1564. We don't even think of that.

  1565. Why do we not

  1566. think of that?

  1567. That's why you need

  1568. a savior.

  1569. Because all

  1570. God does

  1571. is give you

  1572. more power

  1573. to be you?

  1574. You're going to think

  1575. that text applies

  1576. to everybody

  1577. other than you.

1578. And let me tell you

  1579. you talk to maybe

  1580. if you're old enough

  1581. you have kids

  1582. and you say

  1583. by the way

  1584. do you ever think

  1585. I'm proud

1586. or on my high horse?

  1587. I don't think

1588. that's ever true of me.

  1589. Well they might not

  1590. say anything

  1591. but inwardly

  1592. they're thinking

  1593. yes it absolutely

1594. does apply to you dude.

  1595. Dad.

  1596. Mom.

  1597. Or we might say

  1598. that about our kids

  1599. who don't think

  1600. it applies to them.

  1601. Everybody else

  1602. sees that it applies

  1603. to us.

  1604. We just don't see

  1605. it about ourselves.

  1606. That's why we need

  1607. a savior.

  1608. In fact

  1609. when Christianity

  1610. goes bad

  1611. it's when Christianity

  1612. just becomes

  1613. moral advice

  1614. about how to save

  1615. yourself

  1616. and then it's

  1617. no longer

  1618. Christianity

  1619. and all it is

  1620. is legalism

  1621. and judgmentalism

  1622. and high horse

  1623. righteousness

  1624. and it's just

  1625. a complete

  1626. and utter train wreck.

  1627. Even if it's

  1628. popular

  1629. it's a train wreck.

  1630. This text reveals

  1631. I need a savior.

  1632. I can't leave me

  1633. to save me.

  1634. I need God

  1635. who loves me

  1636. to be my savior.

  1637. So that's the text.

  1638. We read it

  1639. it forms us

  1640. to understand

  1641. that

  1642. when you understand

  1643. that how big

  1644. God is

  1645. and how big

  1646. is his love

  1647. and that he

  1648. relates to me

  1649. regularly for mercy

  1650. that he's always

  1651. for me

  1652. and even

  1653. he even knows

  1654. that I don't see

  1655. these things

  1656. about myself

  1657. and he gently

  1658. prods me

  1659. to understand myself

  1660. and the fact

  1661. of the matter

  1662. is

  1663. is that we like

  1664. humble people

  1665. who are self-aware

  1666. of the fact

  1667. that they have

  1668. some problems.

  1669. Maybe they're not

  1670. nobody's perfect

  1671. but we're drawn

  1672. to people like that.

  1673. Why wouldn't we

  1674. have that type of

  1675. why wouldn't we

  1676. want to have

  1677. that thought

  1678. be that

  1679. which is the big

  1680. thought that we

  1681. talk to about

  1682. ourselves

  1683. and to know

  1684. that Jesus

  1685. is forming us

  1686. into this

  1687. and forming us

  1688. into understanding

  1689. our need for mercy

  1690. and those who

  1691. receive mercy

  1692. are those who

  1693. give mercy

  1694. and we're drawn

  1695. to people

  1696. who give mercy.

  1697. Why wouldn't

  1698. we want

  1699. these big thoughts

  1700. to be the big

  1701. thoughts that

  1702. fill our mind

  1703. day by day

  1704. day by day

  1705. knowing it happens

  1706. in the context

  1707. that we can

  1708. come together

  1709. on a Sunday

  1710. and say honestly

  1711. like we will

  1712. in confession

  1713. God I've had

  1714. a really bad

  1715. week.

  1716. I've had a week

  1717. where I've magnified

  1718. everything other

  1719. than you

  1720. and I've been

  1721. on my high horse

  1722. and I'm really

  1723. proud

1724. and I am so glad

  1725. I can come

  1726. and hear the Bible

  1727. and have the Lord's

  1728. Supper

  1729. and remember

  1730. that Jesus

  1731. died for me

  1732. as a sinner

  1733. and that your

  1734. mercy is for me

  1735. and you want me

  1736. to say I'm

  1737. this week

1738. help me to do it

  1739. this week.

  1740. I invite you

  1741. to stand.

  1742. Let's bow our heads

  1743. in prayer.

  1744. Father,

  1745. first of all

  1746. we ask that

  1747. your Holy Spirit

  1748. would do a gentle

  1749. but powerful

  1750. work in our minds

  1751. and you know

  1752. the things

  1753. that we tend

  1754. to magnify.

  1755. You know

  1756. those of us

  1757. who magnify

  1758. resentment,

  1759. who magnify

  1760. woes,

  1761. who magnify

  1762. fears,

  1763. who magnify

  1764. ourselves,

  1765. who make

  1766. money as if

  1767. it's the most

  1768. important thing

  1769. in the world

  1770. or power.

  1771. You know,

  1772. Father,

  1773. the things

  1774. that we're

  1775. magnifying

  1776. that we're

  1777. not even

  1778. aware of

  1779. and we ask,

  1780. Father,

  1781. that your Holy Spirit

  1782. through your word

  1783. would gently

  1784. convict us

  1785. of these things

  1786. that we magnify

  1787. that are just

  1788. ruining us

  1789. and we ask,

  1790. Father,

  1791. that your Holy Spirit

  1792. would move

  1793. within us

  1794. so that we develop

  1795. the habits

  1796. of magnifying you

  1797. in the context

  1798. of joy,

  1799. knowing you are

  1800. our Savior

  1801. and that you

  1802. are for us,

  1803. that you and your

  1804. mercy are for us

  1805. every day

  1806. until we see you

  1807. face to face.

  1808. And we ask,

  1809. Father,

  1810. that day by day

  1811. as we do this

  1812. that we might be

  1813. like Mary

  1814. and say to you

  1815. again and again

  1816. and again,

  1817. Lord Jesus,

  1818. I desire to be

  1819. your doulos,

  1820. your servant,

1821. and may it be to me

1822. in all that makes me

  1823. your word

  1824. in my sexuality

  1825. and my dealings

  1826. with money

  1827. and power

  1828. and thinking about myself

  1829. and others,

1830. may it be according to me

  1831. according to your word.

  1832. I am your servant

  1833. and help me

  1834. to magnify you.

  1835. And so,

  1836. Father,

  1837. we ask these things

1838. in the name of Jesus,

  1839. your Son

  1840. and our Savior.

  1841. Amen.

  1842. Amen.
