  1. Father, thank you for your words. Thank you that you are the speaking God. You speak words of love and power.

  2. Pray that you would speak to each one of us, to our hearts, words of welcome, words of grace.

  3. Pray that Celeste reads your words and then as I try to say a few words, would we hear you speak to us?

  4. Would we hear your voice? Would we hear what you say? Help me to be faithful.

  5. And yeah, would you encourage us today and send us out with the great news of Jesus.

  6. In his name we pray. Amen. Celeste.

  7. Good morning. Scripture reading today comes from Acts chapter 8, verses 26 to 40.

    Acts 8:26–40

  8. If you don't have a copy of the Bible, I encourage you to grab a copy from the front and also at the back.

  9. If you're using the church Bible, it's at page 862.

  10. Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip,

  11. Rise and go toward the south, to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  12. This is a desert place.

  13. And he rose and went.

  14. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,

  15. who was in charge of all her treasure.

  16. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot,

  17. and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.

  18. And the spirit said to Philip,

  19. Go over and join this chariot.

  20. So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked,

  21. Do you understand what you are reading?

  22. And he said,

  23. How can I unless someone guides me?

  24. And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

  25. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this.

  26. Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter,

  27. and like a lamb before its shearer it's silent.

  28. So he opens not his mouth.

  29. In his humiliation, justice was denied him.

  30. Who can describe his generation?

  31. For his life is taken away from the earth.

  32. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  33. About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this?

  34. About himself?

  35. Or about someone else?

  36. Then Philip opened his mouth.

  37. And beginning with this scripture,

  38. he told him the good news about Jesus.

  39. And as they were going along the road,

  40. they came to some water,

  41. and the eunuch said,

  42. See, here is water.

  43. What prevents me from being baptized?

  44. And he commanded the chariot to stop.

  45. And they both went down into the water,

  46. Philip and the eunuch,

  47. and he baptized him.

  48. And when they came up out of the water,

  49. the spirit of the Lord carried Philip away,

  50. and the eunuch saw him no more,

  51. and went on his way rejoicing.

  52. But Philip found himself at Azotus,

  53. and as he passed through,

  54. he preached the gospel to all the towns

  55. until he came to Caesarea.

  56. This is the word of the Lord.

  57. Great.

  58. Thanks, Celeste, for reading.

  59. Let's keep that passage open

  60. as we'll look at Acts.

  61. Acts, and some other passage later as well.

  62. All right.

  63. Now, Hong Kong, it's a wonderful city.

  64. Many great places to go.

  65. But one thing that I only found out

  66. in the past few years,

  67. because people took me there,

  68. there's all these clubs, right?

  69. All these places where not everyone can go.

  70. You need to be a member,

  71. pay a lot of money.

  72. But then, yeah, you have this,

  73. the Hong Kong club,

  74. or the China club,

  75. or the, what is it?

  76. The golf club and the yacht club.

  77. And, yeah, most people can't go in there,

  78. because, yeah, it's only for members.

  79. Only if they invite you,

  80. which is kind of fun.

  81. It's a nice place.

  82. I sometimes think, of course,

  83. clubs here are,

  84. there's even more exclusive clubs

  85. than in Hong Kong.

  86. I try to have a look online.

  87. What's the most exclusive club?

  88. Probably the yacht club of Monaco.

  89. Of course, you need to have a,

  90. you know,

  91. two people who are members

  92. need to recommend you.

  93. You need to write a handwritten letter.

  94. You need to have an interview

  95. with the Prince of Monaco, right?

  96. Prince Albert II.

  97. And he needs to see if,

  98. you know,

  99. you've made a recognized contribution

  100. to yachting.

  101. And if you want,

  102. if you're a captain,

  103. you need to have at least

  104. five years experience

  105. being a captain.

  106. And then,

  107. you can only go there

  108. with a blue blazer

  109. with the club logo

  110. and those kind of things.

  111. So I guess this is just funny, right?

  112. Most of us don't really care about it

  113. because it's not something we need.

  114. But what if you,

  115. there's something you need,

  116. but you are not eligible?

  117. I don't know.

  118. You want to go to a certain country

  119. to see family

  120. or to see a friend

  121. and you don't get a visa

  122. because, you know,

  123. you're, yeah,

  124. someone like you can't get a visa.

  125. That's really hard, right?

  126. Or there are certain medical treatments

  127. and you're not eligible for that

  128. because of whatever reason.

  129. You don't meet certain criteria.

  130. Then it's a lot more difficult, right?

  131. That it's not,

  132. it's not for everyone.

  133. Or even worse,

  134. what if you couldn't get

  135. to be with God?

  136. I mean,

  137. God is the one we need most, right?

  138. We want to be able to pray.

  139. We need help.

  140. We need forgiveness.

  141. We need all those things.

  142. But what if you couldn't get in?

  143. And certainly in the Old Testament,

  144. that was often the case, right?

  145. If you wanted to be

  146. one of God's people,

  147. well, you had to be Jewish.

  148. The men had to be circumcised

  149. and you had to be ritually clean.

  150. So you had to keep all these rules.

  151. You know,

  152. those 10 commandments are easy,

  153. but how about the 603 other ones

  154. in the Bible, right?

  155. That's quite a few.

  156. The temple symbolized it so clearly, right?

  157. You have this,

  158. yeah,

  159. this is what the temple looks like.

  160. Of course,

  161. if you were not Jewish,

  162. you couldn't even go in.

  163. But then you can see on the left

  164. the court of women

  165. because that is as far as women could go

  166. and only the men could go further.

  167. But then to go into the building,

  168. you had to be a priest

  169. and to go into the innermost place,

  170. you had to be the high priest, right?

  171. It's basically the deep truth there was,

  172. it's very difficult to be with God,

  173. with someone who is infinite

  174. and perfect and holy.

  175. How can you be with someone like that?

  176. We can't just walk in.

  177. We're not welcome.

  178. But if you want to get in,

  179. then it's tough

  180. that you're not welcome, right?

  181. I guess some of us really feel that.

  182. We really know,

  183. okay, yeah,

  184. I want to be with God,

  185. but how can I,

  186. given who I am,

  187. given how unworthy I am?

  188. And yeah,

  189. well,

  190. that is why this passage

  191. and indeed so much of this series

  192. that we're doing in Acts

  193. is such good news

  194. for those who think

  195. they're not welcome.

  196. Now, yeah,

  197. we're doing this series

  198. in the book of Acts,

  199. seeing how the gospel expands.

  200. Yeah,

  201. you may,

  202. it's a,

  203. well,

  204. it looks like the human hero

  205. is this guy called Philip,

  206. who is,

  207. yeah,

  208. a deacon of the church.

  209. He plays a key role.

  210. Although you may wonder,

  211. actually,

  212. why is it called the book of Acts?

  213. People call it the book of Acts.

  214. It's short for the Acts of the Apostles,

  215. right?

  216. The things that the apostles did.

  217. Although the first thing

  218. that I notice here

  219. that I think,

  220. well,

  221. what we see so clearly in Acts

  222. is that it's really,

  223. actually,

  224. it's not about the people,

  225. right?

  226. So,

  227. when we heard this story,

  228. it is so much God's initiative,

  229. again,

  230. right?

  231. It is God doing this.

  232. All through this section,

  233. God is sending visions

  234. and he's sending angels

  235. and he is,

  236. the Holy Spirit

  237. is giving explicit directions.

  238. I think this passage

  239. is pretty wild,

  240. right?

  241. I mean,

  242. verse 26,

  243. now an angel of the Lord

  244. said to Philip,

  245. rise and go towards the south

  246. to the road

  247. that goes down

  248. from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  249. This is a desert place,

  250. right?

  251. So,

  252. here's just Philip

  253. and he's doing evangelism

  254. and then an angel shows up

  255. and says,

  256. okay,

  257. go to that desert road

  258. over there.

  259. Go and stand

  260. in the middle of nowhere.

  261. Why would you do that?

  262. Well,

  263. of course,

  264. there's a plan,

  265. right?

  266. Because then this guy

  267. comes along

  268. in his chariot

  269. and again,

  270. the Spirit,

  271. okay,

  272. the Spirit said to Philip,

  273. verse 29,

  274. go over

  275. and join this chariot

  276. and as you've heard,

  277. yeah,

  278. it's great,

  279. right?

  280. Because here's someone

  281. who wants to know

  282. about Jesus

  283. and he explains the gospel

  284. and he gets baptized.

  285. Verse 39,

  286. and when they came up

  287. out of the water,

  288. the Spirit of the Lord

  289. carried Philip away

  290. and the eunuch

  291. saw him no more

  292. and went on his way rejoicing

  293. and Philip found himself

  294. as a resultist,

  295. right?

  296. You know,

  297. the Spirit just teleports

  298. Philip away

  299. to his next kind

  300. of gospel conversation.

  301. I think this is pretty,

  302. pretty wild.

  303. I mean,

  304. even for the book of Acts,

  305. right?

  306. Where sometimes

  307. these things happen.

  308. It's especially

  309. in this section,

  310. all these wild things happen.

  311. I guess this is where

  312. people are being pushed

  313. out of their comfort zone

  314. and so God needs

  315. to do a lot of pushing,

  316. right?

  317. And so it's so clear

  318. that this is God

  319. being active.

  320. God wants to,

  321. the gospel to go somewhere

  322. and so Philip

  323. is being pushed,

  324. right?

  325. God is active.

  326. Now,

  327. does this happen today?

  328. It could,

  329. but I guess it's unlikely.

  330. I mean,

  331. I've never been teleported.

  332. Anyone here has been

  333. teleported by the Spirit?

  334. No.

  335. No,

  336. I think,

  337. I mean,

  338. I wish this was true,

  339. right?

  340. It would make evangelism

  341. so much easier.

  342. Just an angel,

  343. hey,

  344. go and stand on that

  345. street corner,

  346. third person,

  347. they will be wearing

  348. a red jacket.

  349. They want to know

  350. about Jesus.

  351. Tell them about Jesus.

  352. Right?

  353. I wish many of us

  354. are shy.

  355. It would be so much

  356. easier if God

  357. just would do that

  358. for us.

  359. Now,

  360. of course,

  361. that's not how it works.

  362. That's not how we should

  363. apply this passage,

  364. but it does show

  365. God's heart,

  366. right?

  367. God wants the gospel

  368. to go out.

  369. He wants to save people

  370. and in some ways

  371. some of these things

  372. do happen.

  373. I mean,

  374. I remember one time,

  375. you know,

  376. we can take risks.

  377. When I worked in London

  378. for a church,

  379. one time we were having

  380. lunch as a staff team

  381. and I kind of felt

  382. convicted.

  383. Why are we sitting

  384. here inside

  385. when people outside

  386. need the gospel?

  387. And so,

  388. I decided to just

  389. go out to take my

  390. lunch and sit on a

  391. bench and try to

  392. strike a conversation.

  393. So,

  394. yeah,

  395. I saw a guy

  396. sitting alone on the

  397. bench,

  398. so I kind of just

  399. sat next to him

  400. and,

  401. you know,

  402. try to,

  403. hey,

  404. it's cold,

  405. isn't it?

  406. It was January.

  407. That's what British

  408. people do.

  409. They talk about the

  410. weather.

  411. But,

  412. you know what?

  413. We started talking

  414. and what is your job?

  415. Oh,

  416. yeah,

  417. I work for that

  418. church over there.

  419. Oh,

  420. wow,

  421. that's interesting

  422. because I really

  423. want to know about

  424. Christianity.

  425. Last week I bought

  426. this Bible.

  427. Can you help me

  428. read it?

  429. Like,

  430. wow,

  431. nothing to do with

  432. me,

  433. but,

  434. you know,

  435. God just put me

  436. in that place

  437. and,

  438. yeah,

  439. you know,

  440. let me encourage you

  441. to speak up.

  442. Let me encourage you

  443. to invite.

  444. I mean,

  445. sometimes it will be

  446. very ordinary.

  447. Sometimes God

  448. can do extraordinary

  449. things,

  450. but God is,

  451. his heart is to

  452. invite people,

  453. right?

  454. There's an alpha

  455. course coming up,

  456. as you may know,

  457. you know,

  458. trying to invite

  459. someone.

  460. Be surprised at

  461. God being at work,

  462. at God already

  463. having taken the

  464. initiative to

  465. prepare people.

  466. But,

  467. that's wonderful,

  468. but that's not just,

  469. that's not the main

  470. point,

  471. right?

  472. Because the person

  473. that Philip is sent

  474. to is not just

  475. anyone.

  476. It's a very special

  477. person,

  478. because this is

  479. God's initiative,

  480. but,

  481. yeah,

  482. to do what?

  483. And I think what we

  484. should see is to

  485. welcome outsiders.

  486. This guy is very

  487. interesting.

  488. Look at who this guy

  489. is.

  490. Verse 27.

  491. And Philip rose

  492. and went,

  493. and there was an

  494. Ethiopian,

  495. a eunuch,

  496. a court official

  497. of Candace,

  498. queen of the

  499. Ethiopians,

  500. who was in charge

  501. of all her

  502. treasure.

  503. He had come to

  504. Jerusalem to

  505. worship and

  506. was returning.

  507. So,

  508. I mean,

  509. this guy must

  510. have been pretty

  511. important and

  512. wealthy,

  513. right?

  514. If you are over

  515. all the treasure

  516. of the,

  517. you know,

  518. the royal family

  519. of the queen

  520. of Ethiopia,

  521. I don't know,

  522. was he a

  523. minister of

  524. finance or

  525. something?

  526. He was a

  527. pretty important

  528. official.

  529. He was very

  530. religious,

  531. right?

  532. He had come to

  533. Jerusalem to

  534. worship,

  535. right?

  536. So,

  537. that's months

  538. of travel all

  539. the way from

  540. Ethiopia to

  541. Jerusalem.

  542. And he was

  543. reading a

  544. scroll of the

  545. prophet Isaiah.

  546. Now,

  547. back then,

  548. not everyone

  549. could read,

  550. and certainly,

  551. I don't know,

  552. these days,

  553. you know,

  554. we can buy

  555. these Bibles

  556. pretty cheaply.

  557. A handwritten

  558. scroll of

  559. Isaiah,

  560. 66 chapters,

  561. that's expensive.

  562. Right?

  563. So,

  564. this guy is

  565. pretty wealthy,

  566. but he can

  567. buy a whole

  568. scroll of Isaiah

  569. just for his

  570. own reading.

  571. That's amazing.

  572. My guess is he

  573. was a Jewish

  574. convert.

  575. It says he

  576. was a foreigner,

  577. he was an

  578. Ethiopian,

  579. so certainly

  580. ethnically not

  581. Jewish.

  582. But in

  583. chapter 10,

  584. we get kind

  585. of Cornelius,

  586. the first

  587. Gentile,

  588. and this

  589. guy,

  590. you know,

  591. why not

  592. this guy?

  593. I guess because

  594. he wasn't a

  595. Gentile anymore.

  596. He, you

  597. know,

  598. he had

  599. converted,

  600. he'd become

  601. a Jew.

  602. But the

  603. main thing

  604. that you

  605. heard that

  606. gets repeated

  607. is that he

  608. is a

  609. eunuch,

  610. right?

  611. Five times

  612. it says the

  613. eunuch.

  614. I mean,

  615. surely Luke

  616. could have said

  617. the Ethiopian,

  618. said,

  619. and the

  620. Ethiopian

  621. rejoiced,

  622. or the

  623. official said

  624. this.

  625. Why does

  626. he keep

  627. saying the

  628. eunuch?

  629. I think

  630. that's the

  631. thing that

  632. he wants

  633. to draw

  634. attention to.

  635. And the

  636. thing is,

  637. eunuchs,

  638. they,

  639. yeah,

  640. the Bible

  641. says things

  642. about eunuchs.

  643. And one

  644. clear thing

  645. that it

  646. says,

  647. I mean,

  648. maybe you

  649. don't know,

  650. maybe what

  651. is a

  652. eunuch?

  653. Well,

  654. here's a

  655. verse from

  656. the Bible.

  657. It's a bit

  658. graphic.

  659. No one

  660. whose testicles

  661. are crushed

  662. or whose

  663. male organ

  664. is cut

  665. off shall

  666. enter the

  667. assembly of

  668. the Lord.

  669. This is the

  670. Bible.

  671. Yeah,

  672. this is one

  673. of the rules

  674. in the law.

  675. Yeah,

  676. eunuchs are

  677. not allowed

  678. into the

  679. assembly of

  680. the Lord.

  681. I don't

  682. know exactly

  683. the reason.

  684. Maybe be

  685. fruitful and

  686. multiply,

  687. increasing the

  688. people of

  689. God.

  690. That was a

  691. very key

  692. command.

  693. And someone

  694. who couldn't

  695. do that,

  696. yeah,

  697. obviously

  698. something

  699. wrong with

  700. them.

  701. Maybe they

  702. were not

  703. allowed in.

  704. But this

  705. guy,

  706. yeah,

  707. he traveled

  708. all the way

  709. to Jerusalem,

  710. but this

  711. means he

  712. couldn't go

  713. into the

  714. temple,

  715. right?

  716. He had to

  717. stay on

  718. the outside.

  719. He wasn't

  720. allowed in.

  721. Can you

  722. imagine how

  723. sad that

  724. was?

  725. Right?

  726. After all

  727. this travel,

  728. yeah,

  729. he could buy

  730. a scroll of

  731. Isaiah,

  732. but for the

  733. rest,

  734. he couldn't

  735. get into

  736. the temple.

  737. I'm not

  738. sure if he

  739. was born

  740. a eunuch,

  741. or maybe,

  742. you know,

  743. if he wanted

  744. to work for

  745. the queen,

  746. yeah,

  747. only Eunice

  748. could do

  749. that.

  750. Had he

  751. made a

  752. big sacrifice

  753. for his

  754. career?

  755. I don't

  756. know.

  757. But,

  758. yeah,

  759. he was

  760. excluded

  761. from the

  762. people of

  763. God.

  764. He was

  765. an outsider.

  766. And,

  767. you know,

  768. he couldn't

  769. do much

  770. about it,

  771. right?

  772. Under

  773. Jewish law,

  774. many people

  775. were like

  776. that because

  777. of their

  778. nationality,

  779. or the

  780. jobs they

  781. did,

  782. or just

  783. because they

  784. were unclean,

  785. because it's

  786. so hard to

  787. approach God,

  788. right?

  789. He is holy

  790. and pure,

  791. and we are

  792. not.

  793. And so

  794. often we just

  795. can't do

  796. anything about

  797. it.

  798. I mean,

  799. the eunuch,

  800. he couldn't

  801. really just

  802. try harder,

  803. right?

  804. He couldn't

  805. just,

  806. I mean,

  807. he really

  808. tried,

  809. and he

  810. couldn't

  811. change who

  812. he was.

  813. He couldn't

  814. change,

  815. a bit like

  816. we're saying

  817. just now,

  818. if the leopard

  819. who can't

  820. change his

  821. spots,

  822. we can't.

  823. but then

  824. what happens

  825. on the road

  826. to Gaza?

  827. That's

  828. amazing,

  829. right?

  830. So he's

  831. got his

  832. new scroll,

  833. he's reading

  834. in his

  835. chariot,

  836. he doesn't

  837. really understand

  838. what he's

  839. reading,

  840. and then

  841. suddenly he's

  842. got this guy

  843. running along

  844. his chariot,

  845. hey,

  846. what are you

  847. doing?

  848. How are you?

  849. And,

  850. yeah,

  851. do you know

  852. what you're

  853. reading?

  854. No,

  855. I've got no

  856. clue.

  857. Hey,

  858. come and

  859. sit next to

  860. me.

  861. So he

  862. invites Philip

  863. up,

  864. and,

  865. yeah,

  866. he happens

  867. to be

  868. reading Isaiah

  869. 53,

  870. and if you're

  871. a Christian,

  872. you probably

  873. know,

  874. ooh,

  875. that's a

  876. great passage,

  877. about this

  878. individual who

  879. is silently

  880. going to his

  881. death like

  882. a lamb to

  883. the slaughter.

  884. We will talk

  885. about it more

  886. in a moment,

  887. completely unjustly

  888. going to his

  889. death.

  890. Who is this

  891. about?

  892. asked the

  893. eunuch.

  894. Well,

  895. Philip knows,

  896. and so,

  897. and Philip

  898. opened his

  899. mouth,

  900. and beginning

  901. with this

  902. scripture,

  903. he told him

  904. the good

  905. news about

  906. Jesus.

  907. Wonderful.

  908. And guess

  909. what?

  910. The eunuch

  911. gets it,

  912. and they

  913. come by

  914. some water,

  915. and he

  916. asks a

  917. very good

  918. question,

  919. verse 36.

  920. See,

  921. here is

  922. water.

  923. What

  924. prevents

  925. me from

  926. being

  927. baptized?

  928. And

  929. baptism,

  930. the sign

  931. of inclusion,

  932. the sign

  933. that you

  934. are a

  935. Christian,

  936. the sign

  937. that you're

  938. part of

  939. it.

  940. What

  941. prevents

  942. me?

  943. That's

  944. the thing,

  945. right?

  946. In the

  947. past,

  948. something

  949. prevented

  950. him.

  951. In the

  952. past,

  953. he

  954. couldn't

  955. go in.

  956. But,

  957. yeah,

  958. nothing

  959. prevents

  960. him.

  961. So,

  962. Philip and

  963. him,

  964. they go

  965. into the

  966. water,

  967. he dunks

  968. him,

  969. and he

  970. is an

  971. official

  972. Christian.

  973. Wonderful,

  974. right?

  975. He is now

  976. part of it.

  977. Such wonderful

  978. news,

  979. right?

  980. After this

  981. disappointing

  982. temple visit,

  983. he is now,

  984. he is really

  985. now part of

  986. it.

  987. And the

  988. spirit takes

  989. Philip away

  990. to his

  991. next

  992. appointment,

  993. the eunuch

  994. goes away

  995. rejoicing.

  996. Here is

  997. an outsider

  998. who is

  999. welcome.

  1000. And I

  1001. think that's

  1002. the big

  1003. point,

  1004. particularly

  1005. with the

  1006. Old Testament

  1007. background,

  1008. because,

  1009. you know,

  1010. if you know

  1011. the Bible,

  1012. if you know

  1013. Isaiah,

  1014. you know,

  1015. certainly if you

  1016. read Acts,

  1017. you notice a lot

  1018. of Isaiah.

  1019. It's like Luke's

  1020. favorite book.

  1021. It's quoted

  1022. all over the

  1023. place.

  1024. This prophet

  1025. who promises

  1026. this great

  1027. rescue,

  1028. a new

  1029. exodus.

  1030. But there's

  1031. a reason,

  1032. I think,

  1033. that Philip,

  1034. you know,

  1035. the spirit

  1036. sent Philip

  1037. to an

  1038. Ethiopian

  1039. eunuch

  1040. that we

  1041. get this

  1042. story.

  1043. Why don't

  1044. you come

  1045. to page

  1046. 577,

  1047. Isaiah

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  1048. chapter 56

  1049. in the

  1050. church

  1051. Bibles,

  1052. or in

  1053. whatever

  1054. Bible,

  1055. Isaiah

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  1056. chapter 56,

  1057. yeah,

  1058. page 577

  1059. if you have

  1060. the church

  1061. Bibles.

  1062. And Isaiah

  1063. talks about

  1064. a great

  1065. rescue,

  1066. but who

  1067. is part of

  1068. that?

  1069. Who gets

  1070. to be

  1071. part of

  1072. that?

  1073. And then,

  1074. yeah,

  1075. it's a

  1076. wonderful

  1077. passage,

  1078. 56 verse

  1079. 3.

  1080. What is

  1081. God saying

  1082. to people?

  1083. Verse 3,

  1084. let not

  1085. the foreigner

  1086. who has

  1087. joined

  1088. himself to

  1089. the Lord

  1090. say,

  1091. the Lord

  1092. will surely

  1093. separate me

  1094. from his

  1095. people.

  1096. And let

  1097. not the

  1098. eunuch

  1099. say,

  1100. behold,

  1101. I'm a

  1102. dry tree,

  1103. right?

  1104. I can't

  1105. bear fruit.

  1106. For thus

  1107. says the

  1108. Lord,

  1109. to the

  1110. eunuchs

  1111. who keep

  1112. my

  1113. Sabbaths,

  1114. who choose

  1115. the things

  1116. that please

  1117. me,

  1118. and hold

  1119. fast my

  1120. covenant,

  1121. I will

  1122. give in

  1123. my house

  1124. and within

  1125. my walls

  1126. a monument

  1127. and a

  1128. name better

  1129. than sons

  1130. and daughters.

  1131. I will

  1132. give them

  1133. an everlasting

  1134. name that

  1135. shall not

  1136. be cut

  1137. off.

  1138. Right?

  1139. So here

  1140. were foreigners

  1141. and eunuchs

  1142. who used

  1143. to be

  1144. excluded,

  1145. but now

  1146. God says,

  1147. well,

  1148. this eunuch,

  1149. he will come

  1150. into my

  1151. house,

  1152. in my

  1153. walls,

  1154. and he's

  1155. got something

  1156. even better

  1157. than having

  1158. a family.

  1159. he's got

  1160. me,

  1161. he's got

  1162. this great

  1163. salvation,

  1164. right?

  1165. Same with

  1166. the foreigners,

  1167. foreigners,

  1168. they'll come

  1169. to my

  1170. holy mountain,

  1171. they'll pray,

  1172. right?

  1173. Verse 8

  1174. summarizes it,

  1175. right?

  1176. The Lord

  1177. God who

  1178. gathers the

  1179. outcasts of

  1180. Israel declares,

  1181. !

  1182. I will gather

  1183. yet others to

  1184. him,

  1185. besides they

  1186. was already

  1187. gathered.

  1188. God is

  1189. gathering

  1190. outcasts.

  1191. Because of

  1192. this great

  1193. rescue,

  1194. he is bringing

  1195. outcasts in,

  1196. and great

  1197. example,

  1198. foreigners and

  1199. eunuchs.

  1200. So what

  1201. better to

  1202. illustrate that?

  1203. Okay,

  1204. here's a

  1205. foreign eunuch,

  1206. right?

  1207. And the

  1208. Holy Spirit

  1209. brings him

  1210. in,

  1211. and we

  1212. have it

  1213. here in

  1214. the Bible

  1215. to really

  1216. see this

  1217. is happening,

  1218. right?

  1219. God is

  1220. fulfilling

  1221. what he

  1222. promised.

  1223. He's

  1224. bringing

  1225. outcasts

  1226. in.

  1227. If they

  1228. believe,

  1229. right?

  1230. People who

  1231. join themselves

  1232. to the

  1233. Lord,

  1234. they're

  1235. welcome.

  1236. How does

  1237. that speak

  1238. to us?

  1239. I guess

  1240. some of us

  1241. surely,

  1242. we were still

  1243. on the

  1244. outside,

  1245. right?

  1246. We

  1247. wouldn't

  1248. call

  1249. ourselves

  1250. a

  1251. Christian.

  1252. I think

  1253. the eunuch

  1254. asks the

  1255. question,

  1256. right?

  1257. What is

  1258. preventing

  1259. me?

  1260. What is

  1261. preventing

  1262. you?

  1263. Maybe

  1264. that you

  1265. don't

  1266. believe.

  1267. It's

  1268. maybe

  1269. that you

  1270. have

  1271. doubts,

  1272. that there's

  1273. things you

  1274. don't find

  1275. hard to

  1276. believe in

  1277. the Bible,

  1278. like the

  1279. teleporting,

  1280. I have

  1281. no idea.

  1282. But maybe

  1283. you wonder

  1284. if you

  1285. are welcome,

  1286. if you're

  1287. welcome,

  1288. maybe because

  1289. of what

  1290. you've

  1291. done,

  1292. maybe because

  1293. of who

  1294. you are,

  1295. maybe,

  1296. you know,

  1297. your background,

  1298. your nationality,

  1299. you have a

  1300. certain impression,

  1301. this is what a

  1302. Christian is like,

  1303. and you don't

  1304. need that.

  1305. Well,

  1306. look at this

  1307. passage,

  1308. look at this

  1309. Ethiopian eunuch.

  1310. Next time he

  1311. comes to

  1312. Jerusalem,

  1313. he won't go to

  1314. the temple,

  1315. he will go to

  1316. a church service,

  1317. and he can

  1318. come in,

  1319. he is welcome,

  1320. he is,

  1321. you know,

  1322. he would really

  1323. stand out,

  1324. right,

  1325. from Ethiopia,

  1326. and yet he

  1327. would be fully

  1328. part of it,

  1329. he is welcome,

  1330. nothing stands

  1331. in his way,

  1332. it's the same

  1333. for you,

  1334. whoever you

  1335. are,

  1336. if you're

  1337. still on the

  1338. outside,

  1339. you can come

  1340. in,

  1341. nothing stands

  1342. in your way,

  1343. I mean,

  1344. your lack of

  1345. faith,

  1346. that stands in

  1347. the way,

  1348. right,

  1349. you need to

  1350. believe,

  1351. right,

  1352. you need to

  1353. say yes to

  1354. Jesus,

  1355. but that's in a

  1356. way that's on

  1357. your side,

  1358. right,

  1359. from Jesus'

  1360. side,

  1361. there's nothing

  1362. that prevents

  1363. him from

  1364. welcoming you

  1365. in,

  1366. no matter what

  1367. you've done,

  1368. no matter who

  1369. you are,

  1370. no matter what

  1371. you think is

  1372. wrong with

  1373. you,

  1374. you can come

  1375. in,

  1376. so if that's

  1377. you,

  1378. let me encourage

  1379. you,

  1380. I guess as a

  1381. church,

  1382. how does this

  1383. apply to us?

  1384. I guess in some

  1385. places the church

  1386. can stand in a

  1387. way,

  1388. right,

  1389. maybe the

  1390. church gives

  1391. the impression

  1392. that,

  1393. you know,

  1394. the gospel is

  1395. only for a

  1396. certain kind

  1397. of people,

  1398. that's,

  1399. yeah,

  1400. you come to

  1401. Watermark and

  1402. I guess most

  1403. people,

  1404. they're ethnically

  1405. Chinese and

  1406. they're educated

  1407. professionals,

  1408. so maybe that's

  1409. who I need to

  1410. be if I want

  1411. to be a

  1412. Christian,

  1413. I guess it's a,

  1414. you know,

  1415. if all are

  1416. welcome,

  1417. that should be

  1418. seen ideally in

  1419. the church,

  1420. right,

  1421. last week the

  1422. Samaritans,

  1423. these dirty

  1424. half-breeds,

  1425. they were

  1426. welcome,

  1427. and now this

  1428. Ethiopian eunuch,

  1429. who,

  1430. I'm not sure if

  1431. they thought he,

  1432. what they would

  1433. think of him

  1434. before,

  1435. but he is

  1436. welcome,

  1437. so it would

  1438. be great if

  1439. Watermark,

  1440. yeah,

  1441. I think in

  1442. many ways we

  1443. are like this,

  1444. mission trip,

  1445. a lot of

  1446. different people,

  1447. all being,

  1448. you know,

  1449. serving together,

  1450. would be great if

  1451. we see that here

  1452. as well,

  1453. we have a,

  1454. you know,

  1455. a growing number

  1456. of people from,

  1457. especially the

  1458. Philippines,

  1459. that's wonderful,

  1460. would be wonderful

  1461. if we,

  1462. yeah,

  1463. if we're a real

  1464. community,

  1465. where people know

  1466. that,

  1467. hey,

  1468. whoever you are,

  1469. you're welcome,

  1470. and not just on

  1471. Sundays,

  1472. maybe in our

  1473. community groups,

  1474. I know that's

  1475. not always

  1476. practically easy,

  1477. maybe you have a

  1478. young mom and a

  1479. young professional,

  1480. and they're never

  1481. free at the same

  1482. time,

1483. it's hard to be in

  1484. a group together,

  1485. some people can

  1486. afford to live on

  1487. the island,

  1488. and other demographics

  1489. can't,

  1490. and that makes CG

  1491. sometimes difficult,

  1492. but hey,

1493. can we do as much

  1494. as we can,

  1495. that to show that

  1496. all are welcome,

  1497. that the gospel's for

  1498. everyone,

  1499. and therefore church

  1500. is for everyone,

  1501. although you may

  1502. wonder,

  1503. but how can God

  1504. do that,

  1505. I mean it's

  1506. wonderful that

  1507. outcasts are

  1508. welcomed in,

  1509. given they were

  1510. excluded,

  1511. but I don't know,

  1512. maybe you have

  1513. ever been to a

  1514. club,

  1515. and someone

  1516. invited you,

  1517. and you're early,

  1518. and you kind of,

  1519. can I come in,

  1520. what is the reason

  1521. I can come in,

  1522. you're always afraid

  1523. that you're being

  1524. found out,

  1525. I mean one thing

  1526. that's really hanging

  1527. over these chapters

  1528. is the temple,

  1529. if you were here

  1530. two weeks ago,

  1531. I started preaching

  1532. on that,

  1533. and I said that,

  1534. yeah,

  1535. God doesn't need

  1536. a temple,

  1537. but again,

  1538. how can God

  1539. do that,

  1540. right,

  1541. the temple

  1542. had sacrifices

  1543. for sin,

  1544. the temple

  1545. had forgiveness,

  1546. sin is the

  1547. big problem,

  1548. right,

  1549. ultimately all

  1550. these things

  1551. about people

  1552. not being allowed

  1553. in,

  1554. is about sin,

  1555. but does God

  1556. ignore that now,

  1557. well Luke

  1558. wants us to see,

  1559. hey,

  1560. this is why

  1561. everyone is welcome,

  1562. and it is through

  1563. Jesus'

  1564. sacrifice,

  1565. sacrifice,

  1566. so I guess

  1567. you're still

  1568. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  1569. chapter 56,

  1570. let's go to the

  1571. chapter that the

  1572. eunuch was reading,

  1573. just on page 574,

  1574. a little bit back,

  1575. Isaiah 53,

  1576. a very famous

  1577. chapter,

  1578. I mean the eunuch

  1579. was reading about

  1580. the sheep going

  1581. to the slaughter,

  1582. I don't know what

1583. you think of a sheep

  1584. going to the slaughter,

  1585. maybe you think of

  1586. lamb steak,

1587. I think of lamb steak,

1588. if you were in the

  1589. Old Testament,

  1590. you would think of

  1591. sacrifices,

  1592. sacrifices,

  1593. the big thing is,

  1594. we need a sacrifice

  1595. for sin,

  1596. and this song

  1597. that Oscar preached

  1598. on two years ago,

  1599. it's full of allusions

  1600. to sacrifice,

  1601. already,

  1602. you know,

  1603. it's framed,

  1604. it's like a

  1605. chiasm,

  1606. at the beginning

  1607. and the end,

  1608. I mean what will

  1609. this servant do,

  1610. well 52 verse 15,

  1611. just before chapter 53,

  1612. it says he will

  1613. sprinkle many nations,

  1614. if you look for

  1615. sprinkling in your

  1616. Bible,

  1617. that's all over

  1618. Leviticus and

  1619. Numbers,

  1620. sacrifices for sin,

  1621. at the end,

  1622. 53 verse 10,

  1623. when it was the

  1624. will of the Lord

  1625. to crush him,

  1626. he's put into grief,

  1627. when his soul

  1628. makes an offering

  1629. for guilt,

  1630. guilt offerings,

  1631. again,

  1632. Leviticus and

  1633. Numbers,

  1634. I mean what is

  1635. a sacrifice,

  1636. I don't know what

  1637. we think of sacrifice,

  1638. we're thinking of

  1639. giving up something

  1640. costly,

  1641. in some ways

  1642. that's true,

  1643. well you had an

  1644. animal,

  1645. an animal that

  1646. was innocent,

  1647. an animal that

  1648. was blameless,

  1649. no defects,

  1650. that would be a

  1651. substitute,

  1652. the priest would

  1653. take this animal

  1654. and he would do

  1655. something with that

  1656. animal,

  1657. he would take hold

  1658. of its head

  1659. and confess all

  1660. the sins

  1661. over that animal,

  1662. and he would

  1663. basically,

  1664. he would lay the

  1665. sins on that

  1666. animal,

  1667. that's what God

  1668. was doing

  1669. through this

  1670. priest,

  1671. he was putting

  1672. the sins

  1673. on that animal

  1674. and basically

  1675. the sins

  1676. are no longer

  1677. on you,

  1678. they're now

  1679. on that animal

  1680. and what will

  1681. happen to it,

  1682. well it gets

  1683. slaughtered

  1684. and its blood

  1685. gets poured out

  1686. and its body

  1687. gets burned,

  1688. it's pretty gruesome

  1689. and that's kind

  1690. of what our sin

  1691. deserves,

  1692. right,

  1693. if we,

  1694. what is sin,

  1695. well it's all

  1696. our law breaking

  1697. as we talked

  1698. about,

  1699. our offenses,

  1700. our living

  1701. our own way,

  1702. all those things,

  1703. they deserve

  1704. judgment,

  1705. they deserve

  1706. death,

  1707. but this animal

  1708. would take that

  1709. in our place,

  1710. it would be so

  1711. cleared,

  1712. our sins are put

  1713. on this animal,

  1714. the animal gets

  1715. killed and so

  1716. the sin is taken

  1717. care of,

  1718. the judgment's

  1719. taken care of,

  1720. it's wonderful

  1721. grace,

  1722. of course with

  1723. these animals it

  1724. was not very

  1725. effective,

  1726. every sin a new

  1727. sacrifice and of

  1728. course is an animal

  1729. really a very good

  1730. substitute,

  1731. now the real

  1732. substitute would

  1733. come one day,

  1734. God promised,

  1735. he promised,

  1736. you know Isaiah

  1737. has this,

  1738. this servant,

  1739. this spirit

  1740. anointed king

  1741. who is a servant

  1742. of the Lord

  1743. and he would

  1744. take,

  1745. this is what

  1746. would happen

  1747. to him,

  1748. right,

  1749. what would

  1750. happen in

  1751. verse 6,

  1752. 53 verse 6,

  1753. all we like

  1754. sheep have

  1755. gone astray,

  1756. we have turned

  1757. everyone to

  1758. his own way

  1759. and the Lord

  1760. has laid on

  1761. him the

  1762. iniquity of

  1763. us all,

  1764. same as with

  1765. a sacrifice,

  1766. all our iniquity,

  1767. all our sin

  1768. laid on

  1769. this king

  1770. and what

  1771. would have,

  1772. and then what

  1773. happened,

  1774. verse 5,

  1775. he was pierced

  1776. for our

  1777. transgressions,

  1778. he was crushed

  1779. for our

  1780. iniquities,

  1781. upon him

  1782. was the

  1783. chastisement

  1784. that brought

  1785. us peace

  1786. and with his

  1787. wounds we

  1788. are healed

  1789. and you hear

  1790. the interplay

  1791. between him

  1792. and us,

  1793. he and

  1794. we,

  1795. we deserve

  1796. punishment but

  1797. he got

  1798. punished in

  1799. our place

  1800. for our

  1801. transgressions,

  1802. and that is

  1803. the beauty

  1804. of this

  1805. chapter and

  1806. yeah,

  1807. Luke,

  1808. you know,

  1809. Acts doesn't

  1810. mention the

  1811. cross very

  1812. much but

  1813. it's there

  1814. in the

  1815. background,

  1816. right,

  1817. and this

  1818. is why

  1819. people are

  1820. welcome because

  1821. all our sin

  1822. is paid for

  1823. because the

  1824. ultimate sacrifice

  1825. for sin has

  1826. taken place,

  1827. so we don't

  1828. need a temple

  1829. anymore,

  1830. it's all

  1831. done and

  1832. that is why

  1833. you get

  1834. great chapters

  1835. including this

  1836. chapter 56

  1837. with a eunuch

  1838. being welcomed,

  1839. a foreigner

  1840. being welcomed

  1841. because in

  1842. through the

  1843. cross,

  1844. yeah,

  1845. everyone is

  1846. welcome,

  1847. that's the

  1848. wonderful truth,

  1849. right,

  1850. and this is

  1851. what you need

  1852. to know,

  1853. again,

  1854. so think of

  1855. yourselves,

  1856. you're in that

  1857. club,

  1858. isn't it good

  1859. to know,

  1860. okay,

  1861. my name is

  1862. on the guest

  1863. list,

  1864. someone has

  1865. put my name

  1866. on the guest

  1867. list,

  1868. someone has

  1869. done something

  1870. so I could

  1871. get in,

  1872. or someone

  1873. has paid for

  1874. a ticket for

  1875. me so I can

  1876. get in,

  1877. so I don't

  1878. feel like an

  1879. imposter when

  1880. I'm waiting

  1881. for at the

  1882. American club

  1883. or something,

  1884. right,

  1885. that's the

  1886. idea,

  1887. and many of

  1888. us as

  1889. Christians,

  1890. okay,

  1891. yeah,

  1892. we are

  1893. Christians,

  1894. but maybe

  1895. you still

  1896. have doubts,

  1897. right,

  1898. I know God

  1899. welcomes me,

  1900. I know I

  1901. can pray,

  1902. and yet you

  1903. often feel like,

  1904. what am I doing

  1905. really here,

  1906. right,

  1907. how can I be

  1908. sure that God

  1909. will welcome me,

  1910. well,

  1911. why would he

  1912. welcome someone

  1913. like me,

  1914. well,

  1915. that's why you

  1916. need to look

  1917. at the cross,

  1918. right,

  1919. the cross

  1920. says your

  1921. sin is paid

  1922. for,

  1923. you are

  1924. welcome,

  1925. you know,

  1926. even though

  1927. there's so

  1928. many reasons

  1929. you shouldn't

  1930. be welcome,

  1931. right,

  1932. so many

  1933. things you've

  1934. done,

  1935. so many

  1936. things you

  1937. are,

  1938. and you've

  1939. got nothing

  1940. to offer

  1941. to God,

  1942. and you don't

  1943. belong to

  1944. God,

  1945. but it

  1946. doesn't

  1947. matter,

  1948. Jesus took

  1949. care of

  1950. it all,

  1951. he's put

  1952. you there,

  1953. he's included

  1954. you,

  1955. he's welcomed

  1956. you,

  1957. and that is

  1958. so wonderful,

  1959. right,

  1960. it doesn't

  1961. give you peace,

  1962. I don't know,

  1963. you know,

  1964. maybe you've

  1965. had this

  1966. week off

  1967. tomorrow,

  1968. you're going

  1969. to go to

  1970. work,

  1971. you're going

  1972. to go to

  1973. your normal

  1974. week,

  1975. and maybe

  1976. something terrible

  1977. will happen,

  1978. you know,

  1979. something will

  1980. go wrong,

  1981. that's your

  1982. fault,

  1983. or someone

  1984. else's,

  1985. isn't this

  1986. great that

  1987. God,

  1988. that God

  1989. is there

  1990. for you,

  1991. that you

  1992. are welcome

  1993. with him,

  1994. you have

  1995. access,

  1996. because you

  1997. know Jesus

  1998. died for

  1999. you,

  2000. right,

  2001. there's nothing

  2002. that will,

  2003. that can stand

  2004. in the way

  2005. from you

  2006. coming to

  2007. God,

  2008. there's nothing

  2009. preventing you,

  2010. in those

  2011. moments you can

  2012. always find

  2013. peace and

  2014. grace and

  2015. help,

  2016. isn't it so

  2017. assuring,

  2018. you know,

  2019. again,

  2020. it's a church

  2021. thing,

  2022. right,

  2023. you have a

  2024. church community

  2025. where you

  2026. belong,

  2027. where you

  2028. can find

  2029. help,

  2030. where you

  2031. can find

  2032. comfort and

  2033. encouragement,

  2034. and again,

  2035. if you

  2036. believe,

  2037. you know,

  2038. a church,

  2039. everyone who

  2040. believes should

  2041. be welcome,

  2042. doesn't matter

  2043. who you are,

  2044. you don't need

  2045. to pretend,

  2046. isn't that

  2047. wonderful,

  2048. right,

  2049. you're welcome

  2050. with Jesus,

  2051. then you're

  2052. welcome in

  2053. church,

  2054. whoever you

  2055. are,

  2056. that's so

  2057. liberating,

  2058. now that's,

  2059. yeah,

  2060. and that is,

  2061. that is for

  2062. each of us

  2063. here,

  2064. especially though

  2065. if you feel

  2066. you are not

  2067. part of

  2068. things,

  2069. Jesus has

  2070. welcomed you,

  2071. right,

  2072. he has died

  2073. for you,

  2074. and so

  2075. everyone can

  2076. come in,

  2077. and again,

  2078. let's share

  2079. that hope,

  2080. won't we,

  2081. in the Old

  2082. Testament,

  2083. there wasn't

  2084. much sharing

  2085. your faith,

  2086. because most

  2087. people couldn't

  2088. come in anyway,

  2089. New Testament,

  2090. so much spreading

  2091. the gospel,

  2092. why,

  2093. because everyone

  2094. is welcome,

  2095. let's be doing

  2096. that,

  2097. let's rejoice in

  2098. the access we

  2099. have,

  2100. let's rejoice in

  2101. the welcome we

  2102. have,

  2103. let's make sure

  2104. we spread that

  2105. welcome to

  2106. others,

  2107. why don't we

  2108. pray together,

  2109. oh Jesus,

  2110. we thank you

  2111. that you

  2112. made this

  2113. ultimate sacrifice,

  2114. that's the

  2115. thing that

  2116. kept us away

  2117. from you,

  2118. our sin,

  2119. and you're

  2120. rough against

  2121. our sin,

  2122. that's all

  2123. that is taken

  2124. care of,

  2125. that you

  2126. pay for

  2127. everything on

  2128. the cross,

  2129. there could

  2130. be no

  2131. greater

  2132. payment

  2133. than the

  2134. life of

  2135. the son

  2136. of God,

  2137. so we

  2138. are welcome

  2139. no matter

  2140. who we

  2141. are,

  2142. no matter

  2143. what we've

  2144. done,

  2145. help us

  2146. to know

  2147. that,

  2148. help us

  2149. never to

  2150. doubt our

  2151. access to

  2152. you,

  2153. help us

  2154. never to

  2155. doubt the

  2156. basis of

  2157. our relationship

  2158. with you,

  2159. that we

  2160. would have

  2161. peace and

  2162. rest in

  2163. that,

  2164. that we

  2165. would be

  2166. a church

  2167. that reflects

  2168. that in

  2169. our joy,

  2170. in our

  2171. welcome of

  2172. each other,

  2173. welcome of

  2174. others,

  2175. and in

  2176. our spreading,

  2177. we want many

  2178. people to

  2179. know this,

  2180. many people

  2181. to experience

  2182. this great

  2183. welcome that

  2184. we have

  2185. received,

  2186. that some

  2187. of us here

  2188. still need to

  2189. receive,

  2190. Lord,

  2191. draw each

  2192. of us here

  2193. to you

  2194. today,

  2195. we ask this

  2196. in Jesus'

  2197. name,

  2198. Amen.
