  1. We're going to read together from James chapter 5, verses 1 to 12.

    James 5:1–12

  2. That's our scripture reading this morning.

  3. And one of our members, Douglas, is going to come and read for us.

  4. Douglas.

  5. Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

  6. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.

  7. Your gold and silver have corroded,

  8. and their corrosion will be evidence against you

  9. and will eat your flesh like fire.

  10. You have laid up treasure in the last days.

  11. Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields,

  12. which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you,

  13. and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

  14. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence.

  15. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

  16. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person.

  17. He does not resist you.

  18. Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.

  19. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,

  20. being patient about it until it receives the early and the late rains.

  21. You also be patient.

  22. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

  23. Do not grumble against one another, brothers,

  24. so that you may not be judged.

  25. Behold, the judge is standing at the door.

  26. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers,

  27. take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

  28. Behold, we consider those blessed who remain steadfast.

  29. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job,

  30. and you have seen the purpose of the Lord,

  31. how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

  32. But above all, my brothers,

  33. do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath.

  34. But let your yes be yes and your no be no,

  35. so that you may not fall under condemnation.

  36. Amen.

  37. Thanks.

  38. We're working our way through the epistle of James,

  39. and we are in James chapter 5,

    James 5 chapter mention

  40. nearly the end, penultimate week in the book of James together.

  41. James is the biological brother of Jesus Christ,

  42. and he is writing to Jewish Christians,

  43. which is very important for today.

  44. Jewish Christians that have been dispersed from Jerusalem

  45. all around the Mediterranean.

  46. And James has the habit in this letter

  47. of grabbing you by the scruff of the collar

  48. and shaking you a little bit.

  49. And so he does that in this passage

  50. just like he did it last week.

  51. And in James chapter 4, verse 13, last week's text,

    James 4:13

  52. he says at the very beginning,

  53. come now.

  54. And that little English word, two words,

  55. is translated from a Greek word

  56. that appears nowhere else in the New Testament

  57. but right there in the letter of James.

  58. And it's sort of a little bit,

  59. slightly more aggressive way of calling on somebody to think.

  60. And so it's like grabbing you by the scruff of the collar

  61. and saying, think with me, think carefully.

  62. And last week he said, think carefully.

  63. Are you forgetting God in the way you make your daily plans,

  64. in the way you plan your life?

  65. Have you forgotten God in all things

  66. in your day-to-day life?

  67. So is the chorus of your life, the song of your life,

  68. thy will be done, Lord, or my will be done,

  69. in the way that you organize your day even?

  70. Now, today, chapter 5, verse 1,

  71. if you look at it, you'll see two little words,

  72. come now, the same two words in English,

  73. one word in Greek,

  74. that shows up in no other place in the New Testament.

  75. So this is James doing the same thing again.

  76. He does it twice.

  77. He grabs us by the scruff of the neck

  78. and he shakes us a little bit

  79. and he says, think with me.

  80. And the issue today is that the tone changes completely,

  81. whereas last week he grabbed us and he said,

  82. come now, Christian brothers and sisters, church,

  83. are you forgetting about God

  84. in the way you make your plans in your day-to-day life?

  85. But this week, the tone is very different

  86. and you might have noticed, as Douglas read for us,

  87. that that was not an easy passage to read.

  88. And as soon as the text opens, he says,

  89. come now, you rich, weep and howl

  90. for the miseries that are about to come upon you.

  91. So this is a judgment passage

  92. and it's very different in tone

  93. and the way it feels to last week's passage,

  94. even though it's introduced with the same first word,

  95. the same first heading,

  96. so it's part of the parallel idea.

  97. So there's some similar ideas there,

  98. James is telling us,

  99. but also something that's very different.

  100. And this passage has been controversial

  101. because it's troubling,

  102. because it opens by saying,

  103. come now, you rich, you wealthy,

  104. weep and howl at the miseries that are coming to you.

  105. And it's controversial

  106. because it's been interpreted

  107. in a lot of different ways.

  108. And the big question today for interpretation

  109. to really see what is God saying to us

  110. through James here,

  111. that you have to ask is,

  112. who are the rich?

  113. Who are the rich here?

  114. So that's the question we have to answer

  115. if we're gonna be able to understand verse seven,

  116. be patient, brothers and sisters.

  117. If you don't know who the rich are,

  118. you don't know what he means even

  119. by the command to be patient in your life,

  120. in the Christian life.

  121. So let's think about that.

  122. That means that we can just do two

  123. instead of three points today.

  124. Verses one to six tell us about the world of the rich.

  125. Who are the rich?

  126. What's the world they're living in?

  127. And then secondly, verses seven to 12

  128. turn to the people of the church

  129. and says, teaches us really about our mission

  130. in the world of the rich.

  131. Okay, so first let's look at verses one to six

  132. and think about the rich.

  133. Who are they?

  134. And what kind of world is James talking about

  135. that they live in?

  136. Now, the instinct we have is to look at the word rich.

  137. Come now, wail, weep, howl, you rich.

  138. And think of merely the materially wealthy.

  139. So just apply it universally.

  140. That's what makes the passage so scary

  141. because every person in this room probably

  142. compared to the first century upper class person

  143. is wealthier.

  144. We are all wealthier in our possessions.

  145. If you have a savings account, you are wealthier.

  146. Then the first century wealthy.

  147. And so that means that when you read,

  148. come now, you rich, weep and howl,

  149. James would most certainly be including

  150. probably all of us in that.

  151. And saying to us, prepare for the miseries

  152. that are coming upon you.

  153. So is he saying, for being rich,

  154. you are going to be judged?

  155. And sometimes it has been read like that

  156. as if he's talking even to Christians

  157. who have a savings account, who have money,

  158. and bringing a word of judgment.

  159. So I want to say today that that's not who he's talking about.

  160. He's talking about something far more specific than that.

  161. And the way that you can get at this,

  162. we can't, I won't spend the time to do this this morning,

  163. but if you went through every little word,

  164. every little phrase in verses one to six,

  165. you would go back to the Old Testament

  166. and find that James is quoting or alluding

  167. to one of the prophets in every single clause

  168. that he uses in verse one to six.

  169. So just a couple examples of that.

  170. In verses one to six, verse one, he says,

  171. weep and howl.

  172. That's a phrase that comes from the Septuagint,

  173. the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

  174. And we find that exact phrase in the Old Testament

  175. 21 times in the prophets.

  176. And it's nowhere else in the New Testament,

  177. but right here.

  178. Or a host of examples here.

  179. The day of slaughter, he says.

  180. He talks about the day of slaughter.

  181. And that language shows up only in the Bible

  182. in Obadiah, Jeremiah, and Zechariah.

  183. So clearly James has the Old Testament open before him.

  184. And he's reading the prophets and quoting from them

  185. in order to write this passage.

  186. He talks about the Lord of hosts or the Lord of armies.

  187. Isaiah quotes the Lord of hosts, that language,

  188. 18 times in just the prophecy of Isaiah alone, right?

  189. And so you've got this real prophetic register

  190. coming out here in James.

  191. And he's clearly trying to basically take the language

  192. of the prophets and preach it to the first century.

  193. And so he sounds like Amos.

  194. He sounds like Micah.

  195. He sounds like Isaiah.

  196. And that helps us to understand who he's talking to

  197. because he's speaking into a context that's very similar,

  198. using language that's very similar

  199. as the Old Testament prophets.

  200. And the Old Testament prophets also condemn the rich,

  201. the wealthy.

  202. But who were they talking about most of the time?

  203. And who they were talking about most of the time

  204. were people within the covenant community of Israel

  205. who had gotten wealthy and had gotten rich.

  206. How?

  207. By making all their money through the religious system

  208. that God had provided in the Levitical code.

  209. By inciting a temple tax against the people.

  210. The priests are who the prophets are talking about.

  211. The priests of the Old Covenant system

  212. and saying you better weep and howl you rich

  213. because you have been given a job by God

  214. to represent the people to God

  215. and bring God to the people.

  216. And yet you have turned the temple

  217. and just into a money-making system.

  218. And you have oppressed the righteous,

  219. the people of God.

  220. That's who I think James is talking to here.

  221. Why?

  222. Because remember,

  223. James is talking to Jewish exiles from Jerusalem,

  224. Jewish Christians who have been dispersed.

  225. And how are they dispersed?

  226. They were dispersed by the persecutions

  227. of the Pharisees and the scribes and the priests

  228. right after the crucifixion and the resurrection.

  229. And so now he's turning at the end of this book

  230. to those persecutors

  231. who had pushed the Jewish Christians out of Jerusalem

  232. and saying to them,

  233. you have turned what God has given you,

  234. to a religion of grace,

  235. into a religion of legalism.

  236. And you've used it to create systems of injustice

  237. where you're oppressing God's people

  238. and stealing from them and hoarding wealth

  239. and doing all sorts of things like that.

  240. Now here's the diagnosis,

  241. the charges I should say.

  242. Let me just point out to you

  243. a few of the charges that he gives.

  244. Look at the one in verse 3.

  245. In verse 3,

  246. the charge is,

  247. your gold and silver have corroded.

  248. And that will be evidence against you

  249. in the last day.

  250. Now the problem with that

  251. is that gold cannot corrode.

  252. Gold does not rust.

  253. Gold cannot be tarnished.

  254. That's why it's gold.

  255. It's the best, you know,

  256. because it doesn't corrode.

  257. So what does he mean?

  258. Well, what does he mean?

  259. It's a metaphor.

  260. Whenever you take your wealth,

  261. your money, your stuff,

  262. and you put it in a treasury,

  263. in a bank,

  264. in a cave in the first century,

  265. and you hide it,

  266. and it just sits there,

  267. and you accumulate,

  268. and you accumulate,

  269. and you accumulate,

  270. and you don't use the gold

  271. to do good by anybody,

  272. to restore acts of injustice with justice.

  273. You don't care about the poor.

  274. You don't,

  275. he's talking to priests

  276. and to people who have hoarded

  277. all this money and saying,

  278. your gold is corroding,

  279. meaning you're not moving it.

  280. You're not using it for anything.

  281. You're not doing good

  282. by the people of God with it.

  283. So it's just sitting there.

  284. So the first charge is that of hoarding.

  285. The second charge he gives them is veiled,

  286. and it's in verse four,

  287. and it's hard to see at first,

  288. and I think this is why this passage

  289. is usually preached,

  290. what I would suggest is the wrong way,

  291. which is to say,

  292. this is just about being rich.

  293. No, verse four,

  294. look down at verse four with me.

  295. Behold, the wages of the laborers

  296. who mowed your fields,

  297. which you kept back by fraud,

  298. are crying out against you.

  299. The cries of the harvesters

  300. have reached the ears

  301. of the Lord of hosts.

  302. He's talking about priests

  303. and scribes and Sadducees

  304. who have done what?

  305. Yeah, it probably is the case

  306. that they're not paying

  307. their day labors enough money.

  308. That's probably involved,

  309. but this is spiritual language.

  310. You know, this sounds so much

  311. like Jesus saying,

  312. you have suppressed

  313. the harvesters of my field.

  314. What is that harvest?

  315. That's a spiritual harvest,

  316. meaning he's talking

  317. to the religious elite,

  318. the religious establishment of the day,

  319. who have stood directly

  320. against the Jesus movement.

  321. And they are suppressing

  322. the work of ministry,

  323. the work of the gospel

  324. all around the Mediterranean.

  325. That's who he's speaking against.

  326. And so this sounds so much

  327. like Jesus in Matthew 23.

  328. Matthew 23 is a whole chapter

  329. of Jesus turning

  330. to the religious establishment,

  331. the elite of the day,

  332. and saying,

  333. you have turned the temple

  334. into a place of hoarding wealth.

  335. Just listen to some of the language

  336. from Jesus

  337. and how much James echoes

  338. this exact same thing here.

  339. Jesus says,

  340. woe to you,

  341. scribes and Pharisees,

  342. hypocrites.

  343. You clean the outside

  344. of the cup and the plate,

  345. but inside you are full

  346. of greed and self-indulgence.

  347. And in verse five,

  348. James comes and says,

  349. you are full of self-indulgence.

  350. It's almost as if he's quoting

  351. directly from Jesus

  352. as he talks to the scribes

  353. and the Pharisees.

  354. Woe to you,

  355. Jesus writes,

  356. says,

  357. blind guides who say,

  358. if anyone swears by the temple,

  359. it is nothing.

  360. But if anyone swears

  361. by the gold of the temple,

  362. he is bound by his oath.

  363. Verse 12 says,

  364. brothers and sisters,

  365. do not make oaths.

  366. And I don't have time

  367. this morning

  368. to explain that whole system,

  369. but the scribes

  370. and the Pharisees

  371. would require Israelites

  372. to make oaths before them

  373. to give them

  374. a certain amount of money

  375. over time.

  376. And so sometimes people

  377. look at this passage

  378. and say,

  379. verse 12,

  380. why is he all of a sudden

  381. talking about oaths

  382. and how you use your words?

  383. It's because in the system

  384. of oppression

  385. by the religious establishment,

  386. they would get you

  387. to make an oath

  388. that would put you into debt,

  389. ultimately putting you

  390. in prison one day

  391. if you didn't pay it.

  392. And he's saying,

  393. don't ever make an oath

  394. because these oaths

  395. that are being used

  396. are being used

  397. against the church,

  398. against ministry.

  399. That's why verse 12 is there

  400. and we could say

  401. so much more about that.

  402. But you get the picture

  403. and the ultimate indictment

  404. in this passage

  405. is verse 6.

  406. Verse 6,

  407. it's a devastating pronouncement

  408. against the scribes

  409. and the Sadducees

  410. and the Pharisees

  411. and the religious elite.

  412. And you look down

  413. at verse 6,

  414. you have condemned

  415. and murdered

  416. the righteous person.

  417. Now the translator

  418. smooth over the Greek here

  419. a little bit.

  420. He doesn't say

  421. you have condemned

  422. the righteous person exactly.

  423. That does work,

  424. but it very literally says

  425. you have condemned

  426. the righteous one.

  427. And the righteous one

  428. is a title

  429. that was being used

  430. already in the first century

  431. for who?

  432. For Jesus Christ.

  433. You condemned

  434. and you murdered

  435. the righteous one.

  436. What is he saying?

  437. He's talking about the cross

  438. and he's saying

  439. you scribes,

  440. you Pharisees,

  441. you Sadducees,

  442. you priests,

  443. you condemned

  444. Jesus himself

  445. and brought him

  446. before the Roman tribunal

  447. and had him murdered.

  448. You see how much

  449. who he's talking to,

  450. how clear it is

  451. and what he's doing

  452. is he's associating

  453. the first century church

  454. with Jesus himself

  455. and saying

  456. now as you follow Jesus

  457. and are oppressed

  458. by the religious elite,

  459. turning the system

  460. of grace God has given

  461. into a system

  462. of hoarding wealth,

  463. you too are like Jesus,

  464. like the righteous one,

  465. receiving that oppression

  466. as you're scattered

  467. all throughout

  468. the Mediterranean

  469. still trying to do ministry.

  470. All right,

  471. you say

  472. I'm not a first century scribe,

  473. I'm not a first century priest,

  474. I'm not a first century

  475. member of the religious establishment,

  476. how in the world

  477. does this matter to me?

  478. And here's how,

  479. this passage is a warning

  480. to everybody,

  481. really a call to everybody

  482. because the human heart,

  483. the human heart

  484. always drifts

  485. towards legalism.

  486. And the way that this has happened

  487. in the first century

  488. and throughout the time

  489. between the Old Testament

  490. and the New Testament

  491. is that the priest

  492. and the scribes

  493. and the Sadducees

  494. have drifted

  495. towards legalism.

  496. And so this is a warning

  497. for us all.

  498. Here's how it works.

  499. First,

  500. it starts with hypocrisy

  501. in our lives.

  502. And hypocrisy is when

  503. you are devoted to God

  504. on the outside,

  505. but your heart

  506. is very far away

  507. from the Lord

  508. on the inside.

  509. And then hypocrisy

  510. becomes legalism.

  511. And what is legalism?

  512. Legalism is when

  513. you use God's laws

  514. to earn God's favor.

  515. And you say to God,

  516. you stop believing

  517. really in a God of love

  518. and instead you take

  519. His laws

  520. and try to earn

  521. merit His favor.

  522. And then here's where

  523. it really becomes insidious

  524. and this is what happened

  525. in the first century

  526. in the intertestamental period

  527. and this is what

  528. he's talking about here.

  529. When you create

  530. a system of legalism,

  531. a management system,

  532. you have now

  533. a management system

  534. to commit acts

  535. of injustice,

  536. to hoard wealth,

  537. to not pay your day

  538. laborers,

  539. but you justify

  540. those actions

  541. by your religious behavior.

  542. So in other words,

  543. if your standing

  544. before God

  545. is based entirely

  546. on your performance,

  547. you can always find

  548. a ritual

  549. to balance the ledger.

  550. So you can commit

  551. acts of injustice

  552. against the poor

  553. on a Monday,

  554. but you can tithe

  555. mint and dill

  556. and cumin

  557. on a Tuesday

  558. and balance the ledger.

  559. You can not pay

  560. your day laborers

  561. on a Wednesday

  562. and you can come

  563. on Thursday

  564. to the right feast

  565. and sit at the right spot

  566. and balance the ledger.

  567. You see what legalism does?

  568. Legalism allows

  569. for injustice

  570. because it creates

  571. a system of mere religion

  572. that allows you

  573. to really just

  574. to get away

  575. with anything.

  576. And that's why

  577. in the Old Testament

  578. the Lord said,

  579. God said,

  580. I don't even desire

  581. your sacrifices.

  582. No,

  583. I don't even desire

  584. the Levitical system.

  585. What do I desire?

  586. That you would walk humbly,

  587. that you would show mercy.

  588. And that's exactly

  589. the issue.

  590. It's so dangerous.

  591. It's so dangerous

  592. for anybody

  593. because the human heart

  594. always drifts

  595. towards legalism

  596. and legalism

  597. can create a system

  598. of great injustice.

  599. And so the real diagnosis

  600. here in the first six verses

  601. is what's the same

  602. as last week.

  603. That's why the passages

  604. are connected.

  605. Last week,

  606. Christians,

  607. we can forget about God

  608. in our day-to-day lives

  609. and start making our plans

  610. and drift away from the Lord.

  611. But what is he saying here?

  612. He's saying,

  613. you religious person,

  614. you will be tempted

  615. towards legalism

  616. the more you forget

  617. that God is a God of love,

  618. a God of mercy.

  619. And the more you forget

  620. about that,

  621. the more you forget

  622. verse three,

  623. verse three he mentions,

  624. you have stored up

  625. your treasures

  626. in the last days.

  627. What is he doing there?

  628. He's bringing

  629. the religious elite

  630. of his day,

  631. the legalist,

  632. the person of mere religion

  633. and performance,

  634. to remember

  635. that Christ is coming again.

  636. And he's saying,

  637. you've forgotten about that.

  638. You've forgotten

  639. that Christ is coming again.

  640. In other words,

  641. you've forgotten

  642. that there's more

  643. to life than this life.

  644. And so you're hoarding up wealth

  645. and you're creating

  646. a system of injustice

  647. just to get rich.

  648. And it's because

  649. you're not thinking

  650. about the fact

  651. that this life

  652. is so short

  653. and eternity is coming.

  654. So don't store up

  655. treasures for today.

  656. Instead,

  657. just like Jesus said,

  658. store up treasures

  659. for eternity.

  660. See,

  661. you're making this life

  662. all about this life.

  663. And that's what

  664. the legalist forgets

  665. and that's the real warning

  666. to the rich.

  667. Now that means,

  668. secondly and finally,

  669. that when he turns

  670. in verses 7 to 12

  671. to write to Christians,

  672. to write to the church,

  673. he's talking to us

  674. about a very particular

  675. type of context.

  676. And so secondly,

  677. what is our mission

  678. as Christians

  679. according to verse 7 and 12

  680. in the context,

  681. the world of the rich?

  682. And here's what it is.

  683. The world of the rich,

  684. which will be different

  685. for us than it was

  686. for the first century

  687. in this idea,

  688. this idea of the rich,

  689. is really just to say

  690. that all Christians

  691. at all times

  692. live in a time

  693. where ministry

  694. will often involve losing.

  695. Where there will always be

  696. oppression against

  697. the Christian ministry.

  698. At different levels,

  699. at different times,

  700. to different degrees.

  701. Whether it's the religious elite

  702. in a time of Christendom

  703. or establishment,

  704. or whether it's something

  705. entirely different from that,

  706. far away from that

  707. in the time that we live in now,

  708. there will always be

  709. struggle in ministry

  710. and you will always feel like

  711. you are losing quite often.

  712. And so we look up today

  713. and we say,

  714. you know,

  715. I've wanted to see

  716. this relationship healed

  717. and it hasn't healed.

  718. I've wanted to see

  719. the church grow

  720. and it hasn't grown,

  721. we might say.

  722. I've wanted to see this

  723. and that in ministry

  724. and it's just not happened.

  725. The time of the rich,

  726. quote unquote,

  727. in this passage,

  728. it's just the sense

  729. that there is,

  730. we're never going to live

  731. in a time

  732. where we don't feel like

  733. to some degree

  734. we're losing

  735. in the midst of ministry.

  736. Therefore,

  737. verse 7,

  738. what does James,

  739. what does God tell us

  740. to do here through James?

  741. Now here's what he tells us.

  742. Here's what he doesn't tell us.

  743. He doesn't tell us,

  744. therefore,

  745. go and organize a protest

  746. against the establishment.

  747. He doesn't tell us

  748. to say,

  749. well,

  750. you need to read

  751. more critical theorists

  752. and understand

  753. that you're just a victim.

  754. He doesn't tell us that.

  755. Instead,

  756. what does he tell us?

  757. He says,

  758. something so simple,

  759. so much harder

  760. than protest.

  761. And that's,

  762. be patient

  763. and wait

  764. for the coming

  765. of the Lord.

  766. Be patient.

  767. The more you feel

  768. like you are engaged

  769. in ministry

  770. in this life

  771. and it's not going well,

  772. be patient

  773. and wait

  774. for the day

  775. of the Lord.

  776. So just like he pointed

  777. to eschatology

  778. to the rich

  779. and said,

  780. what is eschatology?

  781. Eschatology is

  782. just remembering

  783. that the Lord

  784. is coming again,

  785. that this life

  786. is not all there is.

  787. And he said

  788. to the rich,

  789. to the religious elite,

  790. to the priest,

  791. you've forgotten

  792. that you are living

  793. in the latter days

  794. and that there's

  795. a next life coming

  796. when Jesus returns.

  797. So he turns to us

  798. and says,

  799. be patient

  800. and the way you do that

  801. is by remembering

  802. Jesus Christ

  803. really is coming again.

  804. And that's the way

  805. you can actually grow

  806. in patience

  807. in this life.

  808. Now he gives you

  809. three pictures

  810. to understand that

  811. very quickly,

  812. three brief pictures

  813. and that's always helpful

  814. when the Bible

  815. provides the illustrations

  816. so the preacher

  817. doesn't have to

  818. come up with any.

  819. What does he say?

  820. He points you

  821. to the farmer

  822. in verse 7b.

  823. He says,

  824. see how the farmer

  825. waits for the precious

  826. fruit of the earth

  827. being patient about it

  828. until the land

  829. receives the early

  830. and the late rains.

  831. Now what is he saying?

  832. He's saying

  833. the farmer goes out,

  834. it's very simple,

  835. and sows the seed

  836. but then the farmer

  837. has to sit back

  838. and say,

  839. I can't make

  840. the rains come.

  841. And so what's his point

  842. about what it looks like

  843. in the Christian life

  844. to be patient here

  845. is that patient endurance

  846. is the discipline

  847. of doing

  848. your

  849. faithful work,

  850. your ministry,

  851. whatever ministry

  852. God has given you

  853. and saying,

  854. I don't have the power

  855. to control the outcomes.

  856. I can sow

  857. but God has to bring

  858. in the harvest.

  859. And only God

  860. can decide

  861. if he will.

  862. And so we can sow

  863. in our city

  864. and see that the city

  865. is not experiencing

  866. revival.

  867. And what do we do?

  868. Like the farmer,

  869. we have to say,

  870. I've sowed the seed

  871. and I have to be patient

  872. and wait.

  873. Only the Lord

  874. can bring the harvest.

  875. I have to wait

  876. for the coming of the Lord.

  877. That's the first way

  878. that we can be patient.

  879. The second way

  880. he points us to

  881. is in verse 10,

  882. the prophets there.

  883. He says that

  884. as an example

  885. of suffering

  886. and patience,

  887. brothers and sisters,

  888. take the prophets

  889. who spoke

  890. in the name of the Lord.

  891. Now we really know

  892. that he was bringing

  893. the prophets in

  894. in verses 1 to 6

  895. because he literally says

  896. look at the prophets

  897. as an example.

  898. That only helps us

  899. see how verse 1 and 6

  900. really is a prophetic

  901. indictment

  902. against the rich.

  903. But what is he saying

  904. to us about patience here?

  905. He's saying,

  906. well,

  907. it's hard to know

  908. because he doesn't

  909. really say

  910. that they did anything.

  911. He says,

  912. look at the prophets.

  913. They were so patient

  914. they spoke in the name

  915. of the Lord.

  916. And you say,

  917. well,

  918. what made them patient?

  919. What made them steadfast?

  920. And that's it.

  921. They spoke in the name

  922. of the Lord.

  923. So it was nothing special

  924. about them.

  925. It was that they

  926. simply understood

  927. that they had been given

  928. a message

  929. in the name of the Lord.

  930. And so,

  931. in other words,

  932. he's saying,

  933. the more and more

  934. you realize

  935. that you have something

  936. better than gold,

  937. more,

  938. what does the Bible say,

  939. more precious than gold,

  940. the gospel itself,

  941. you can go out

  942. in the name of the Lord

  943. and sow the gospel

  944. and say,

  945. I have the ability

  946. to simply wait.

  947. I believe in the gospel.

  948. I believe in the power

  949. of the gospel.

  950. I don't need anything else.

  951. I can be patient

  952. as I sow the gospel,

  953. just like the prophets

  954. were when they didn't see

  955. any ministry fruit

  956. for almost their entire ministries

  957. in the Old Testament.

  958. And then the third

  959. and final

  960. when he gives us

  961. is from Job.

  962. He says,

  963. look at Job

  964. and you say,

  965. well,

  966. what about Job?

  967. You've heard the steadfastness

  968. of Job.

  969. You've seen the purpose

  970. of the Lord.

  971. Like the prophets,

  972. you look at Job

  973. and you say,

  974. how in the world

  975. was Job patient?

  976. Job,

  977. so ministry for us

  978. often feels like this.

  979. And if you have

  980. an active ministry today,

  981. I would imagine

  982. you may feel like this,

  983. that you take

  984. two steps forward,

  985. three steps backwards.

  986. You feel like

  987. you've made progress

  988. in sharing the gospel

  989. with a friend.

  990. You feel like

  991. you've opened up

  992. a pathway

  993. to a new ministry

  994. and then nobody comes.

  995. You know,

  996. you take two steps forward,

  997. three steps backwards.

  998. It feels like that

  999. all the time.

  1000. And he says,

  1001. well,

  1002. look at Job.

1003. Job had a big step

  1004. forward in life.

  1005. He was so blessed,

1006. but then ten steps backwards,

  1007. absolute miserable life.

  1008. He lost everything.

  1009. But then you say,

  1010. how was he patient?

  1011. Well,

  1012. remember how Job

  1013. was patient?

  1014. Well,

1015. he cried out to God

1016. and when I read Job,

  1017. I think,

  1018. I don't think you're

  1019. allowed to say that.

  1020. Job,

  1021. I don't think you're

  1022. allowed to say

  1023. those kinds of things

  1024. to God.

  1025. He poured out

  1026. his heart to God

  1027. in ways that feels

  1028. pretty irreverent

  1029. quite often.

  1030. And you see

  1031. what patience is?

  1032. It's all about

  1033. the direction.

  1034. So you might feel

  1035. ministry frustration

  1036. in the context

  1037. of opposition.

  1038. And he's saying,

  1039. look at Job.

  1040. Job was frustrated,

1041. but what did he do?

  1042. He poured it out

  1043. to God.

  1044. He went Godward

  1045. with it.

  1046. Honest prayer.

  1047. Patience is expressed

  1048. in three ways

  1049. in this passage.

  1050. How is it expressed

  1051. in three ways?

  1052. Number one,

  1053. seeing the gospel

  1054. as more precious

  1055. than gold material

  1056. possessions in this life.

  1057. Number two,

  1058. sowing the gospel

  1059. like seeds

  1060. into the city

  1061. and saying,

  1062. I cannot bring about

  1063. the harvest,

  1064. only God can.

1065. I have to be patient.

  1066. I have to wait.

  1067. And number three,

  1068. taking your ministry

  1069. frustrations

  1070. to God

  1071. in utter honesty

  1072. and saying,

  1073. Lord,

1074. I wish more was happening.

  1075. I wish more

  1076. was going on here.

  1077. I wish revival

  1078. would bring about,

  1079. but it's just not.

1080. And that's what it means

  1081. to be patient.

  1082. This word,

  1083. patience,

  1084. that gets used here,

  1085. Greek word,

  1086. makrothumia,

  1087. and makro means long,

  1088. and thumos means blaze

  1089. or fire,

  1090. a burning fire.

  1091. So the word patience

  1092. in Greek

  1093. is literally

  1094. a long fire,

  1095. a long burning fire.

  1096. And the reason

  1097. it's the word patience

  1098. is because it's saying

  1099. that when you're

  1100. a long burning fire,

  1101. you're slowly coming up.

  1102. It means that,

  1103. you know,

  1104. you don't fly off

  1105. the handle very easily.

1106. You're able to receive blows.

  1107. You don't,

  1108. you're getting the weight

  1109. of oppression.

  1110. You're getting ministry

  1111. opposition in your life

  1112. because you are

  1113. doing the work

  1114. of the gospel,

  1115. but it takes you

  1116. a long time

  1117. to really get angry

  1118. about it.

  1119. And he says,

  1120. that's the word

1121. that he uses for patience.

  1122. So patience is really

  1123. just this ability

  1124. to endure

1125. when it's not going well

  1126. and to have

  1127. your gratification

  1128. delayed.

  1129. Delayed for when

  1130. as we close?

  1131. Delayed for what?

  1132. Delayed

  1133. for the coming

  1134. of the Lord.

  1135. What does he say?

  1136. Be patient

  1137. until the coming

  1138. of the Lord.

1139. How do you grow in patience?

1140. How do you grow in patience,

  1141. not in patience?

1142. How do you grow in patience?

  1143. And he tells us,

  1144. he says,

1145. you wait for the coming

  1146. of the Lord.

  1147. In other words,

  1148. he's saying,

  1149. you've got to have

  1150. an eschatology.

  1151. You've got to think

  1152. about the second coming

  1153. of Jesus Christ.

  1154. You've got to think

  1155. about the one

  1156. who is to come

  1157. and say,

  1158. that is what I'm

  1159. working towards.

  1160. And no matter

  1161. what it feels like

  1162. in this life,

1163. this life is so brief

  1164. relative to,

  1165. teach me to number

  1166. my days, Lord.

1167. Our days are so brief

  1168. compared to what is

1169. to come when he returns.

1170. And so he's calling us

1171. at the end of this sermon

1172. and the end of this passage

  1173. to have an eschatology.

  1174. Remember what he said

  1175. to the rich?

  1176. He said,

  1177. you have stored up

  1178. your treasures

  1179. for the last days.

  1180. You've made your life

  1181. all about hoarding gold

  1182. in a cave

1183. and that is your decision.

1184. And he turns to you

  1185. and he says,

  1186. instead,

  1187. store up your treasures

  1188. for eternity.

  1189. Think about the days

  1190. that are to come.

  1191. Keep going.

  1192. Be patient.

  1193. Wait for the Lord.

  1194. Work for the good

  1195. of the land

1196. that is yet to come.

  1197. That's the real call

  1198. and invitation

  1199. of the passage.

  1200. Another preacher

  1201. pointed me

  1202. to an illustration

  1203. this week

  1204. that this preacher

1205. said was from C.S. Lewis.

  1206. I then desperately

  1207. tried to find this

  1208. in C.S. Lewis

1209. and used my C.S. Lewis library

  1210. to find it

1211. and could not find it.

1212. Then I went to AI

  1213. to say,

  1214. is this anywhere

  1215. in C.S. Lewis?

1216. And AI seems to say,

  1217. no.

  1218. But it doesn't matter

  1219. because it's a good illustration.

  1220. So it's not C.S. Lewis,

  1221. I don't think,

  1222. but it would come

  1223. with more authority

  1224. if it was him.

  1225. But somebody talks about,

  1226. just imagine

  1227. a man who's 100 years old.

  1228. We recently saw that

  1229. in the news

  1230. with David Attenborough,

  1231. a man who's 100 years old.

  1232. And imagine this man

1233. thinking about his own death

  1234. and there are really

1235. two errors you can make

1236. as you prepare for death

1237. and think about your own death

  1238. when you're 100 years old.

  1239. The first error

1240. is you get up in the morning

  1241. and say,

  1242. why should I plan

  1243. for anything today?

  1244. I could die today.

  1245. I'm 100 years old after all.

1246. Why go see a film?

1247. Why meet a friend for lunch?

  1248. I might die today.

  1249. I'm 100.

  1250. And so this error

1251. is that you're so fixated

1252. on the end of life

  1253. that you cannot live

1254. in the present at all.

1255. That would be one error.

  1256. The other error

  1257. is equally serious

  1258. but very different.

  1259. And here's the error.

  1260. The 100-year-old man

1261. who has not even thought

1262. about his death one time,

1263. therefore he has not made a will.

  1264. He has begun,

  1265. finally,

1266. the book he's always wanted to write,

1267. he started it at 100 years old

1268. and it's going to be

  1269. a 10-year writing project.

  1270. He's never seriously reckoned

  1271. with the fact

  1272. that his life

1273. is so close to the end.

  1274. So he acts

  1275. as though death

  1276. is not coming.

  1277. He plans

  1278. as though time

  1279. is unlimited.

  1280. And the writer,

  1281. maybe C.S. Lewis,

  1282. says,

  1283. perhaps the gravest failure

1284. is because he will be caught

  1285. completely unprepared

  1286. for the thing

  1287. that is most certain,

  1288. his death.

  1289. Now,

  1290. in the same way,

  1291. what an individual's death

  1292. is to that individual,

  1293. the second coming

  1294. of Jesus Christ

1295. is to every human being.

1296. And this is what that means.

  1297. The second coming

  1298. is the guaranteed certainty

1299. by which you must live today.

1300. It's more certain than death.

  1301. The second coming

  1302. of Jesus Christ,

  1303. the eschatology of Christianity,

1304. is that which is most certain

1305. that has got to organize

  1306. what you do today,

  1307. today.

  1308. And that means

1309. that on the one hand,

  1310. this has the power

  1311. to be patient

  1312. but not sit around

  1313. and do nothing.

  1314. Right?

  1315. Believing that the Lord

  1316. is coming

  1317. and that you can,

  1318. you can pursue resources

  1319. for eternity

1320. helps you with this idea

  1321. of a holy recklessness.

  1322. And what is that?

  1323. It's,

  1324. it's to say,

  1325. really,

  1326. money matters

  1327. to some degree

  1328. in this life

  1329. but not ultimately

1330. and so I can give it away.

  1331. A holy recklessness

  1332. with my stuff.

  1333. You know,

  1334. having an eschatology

1335. that all that really matters

  1336. is what will happen

  1337. when Christ comes again

1338. makes today matter so much

  1339. because you can say,

1340. because I'm living for then,

  1341. I don't need to hoard,

  1342. I don't need to hold on

  1343. to anything,

  1344. I don't need to commit injustice

  1345. against anybody else

  1346. and use them

  1347. like the rich did.

  1348. Instead,

  1349. I can invest

1350. in what is to come

1351. because that's what really matters.

  1352. A holy recklessness,

  1353. an ability in ministry

  1354. to take risks.

  1355. Do you take risks

  1356. in your personal ministry

  1357. because you have

  1358. an eschatology

  1359. that says,

  1360. I know what's going to happen

1361. to me when Jesus comes again.

  1362. I can take risks,

  1363. I'm okay.

  1364. On the other hand,

  1365. and the final thing,

1366. is that it does not produce

1367. a carelessness about this life.

  1368. The man,

  1369. the woman who has

  1370. the will made out,

1371. who knows what is to come,

  1372. therefore still acts,

  1373. still invents,

1374. still goes out into the world

  1375. with passion

1376. and longing to do good.

  1377. Why?

  1378. Because they know

1379. how the story's going to end.

  1380. So patience,

  1381. ministry blaze,

  1382. we might say,

  1383. to use that word

  1384. through me,

  1385. from the word patience,

  1386. is cultivated

  1387. by contemplating

  1388. and beholding

  1389. the second coming

  1390. of Jesus Christ.

1391. That's what this passage teaches.

  1392. And so,

  1393. I end with this.

  1394. How can you?

  1395. How can you?

1396. For you know the grace

1397. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1398. that though he was rich,

  1399. though he was rich,

  1400. yet for your sake

  1401. he became poor,

1402. so that by his poverty

  1403. you might become rich.

  1404. How can you?

  1405. The righteous one

  1406. has gone before you.

1407. The one who is most rich

  1408. in blessing,

1409. the one who came down

  1410. from heaven,

  1411. who put away

  1412. his heavenly life,

  1413. his wealth,

1414. he has gone before you

  1415. with such patience.

1416. How do you become patient

  1417. in this life?

  1418. How do you,

1419. how do you really serve

  1420. the Lord with passion,

1421. looking at the second coming,

1422. not sitting on your hands

  1423. in the midst

  1424. of ministry opposition?

1425. You've got to behold him.

  1426. You've got to behold

  1427. the righteous one.

  1428. You've got to look

1429. at the one who is so patient

  1430. towards you

  1431. at the cross,

1432. who gave away his wealth

1433. in every sense of the word

  1434. to embrace utter poverty

1435. so that you might become rich.

  1436. What is real wealth?

1437. It is finding your identity

  1438. in him,

1439. finding your meaning in him,

1440. living your life for him.

1441. And so on that basis,

1442. if you're standing before God

  1443. is not earned,

  1444. it's given by him,

  1445. that means today

  1446. you can know

1447. that you do not maintain

  1448. your relationship

  1449. with him by performance.

1450. You can afford to go out

  1451. and to lose things.

1452. You can afford to go to ministry

  1453. and to lose

1454. because Christ will come again.

  1455. Let us pray.

  1456. Father,

1457. we ask that you would give us

  1458. an eschatology,

1459. a vision of the end

  1460. that would inform

1461. the way we live today.

  1462. And we pray,

  1463. Lord,

1464. that we would learn patience,

  1465. the patience of Jesus,

  1466. the righteous one,

1467. and the patience of the farmer

1468. and the patience of Job

1469. and the patience of the prophets.

1470. And that as we look out and say,

  1471. Lord,

1472. why haven't you brought revival

  1473. to our city?

  1474. Why haven't our neighbors

  1475. come to faith?

1476. Why haven't these things happened

1477. in the way we long for?

  1478. We would know,

  1479. we would know

1480. that you are the one

1481. who actually brings in the harvest

  1482. and we would learn.

  1483. Lord,

1484. so give us a vision

1485. for the second coming today.

1486. Even as we sing now,

1487. help us to contemplate that reality,

  1488. what that means,

1489. the enormity of the fact

  1490. that life is eternal

1491. and that Christ will come again

1492. and help us to be drawn

  1493. towards the gospel

  1494. because of it.

1495. We pray in Christ's name.

  1496. Amen.
