  1. So if you have a Bible, perhaps you want to turn back with me to John chapter 10 on page 1076.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. We have concerns for home security and personal security.

  4. The very word conjures up ideas of protection, safety, perhaps having a safeguard, a form of a guarantee.

  5. It's always a relevant topic.

  6. I think it's really timely just now because we seem to be moving into a time of insecurity.

  7. Certainly globally, we think about the situation developing with Iran and there's the fear of it escalating,

  8. but nobody quite seems to know where that's going to go.

  9. We're already beginning to anticipate, aren't we, the knock-on effects?

  10. What's it going to mean even for our energy supplies?

  11. What's it going to mean for our travel plans?

  12. What's the impact going to be on our finances, never mind thinking about what happens anywhere else?

  13. Sometimes, though, that sense of insecurity might come because of a different factor.

  14. There's been a number of reports recently about the rapid rise of AI,

  15. and then the impact that that is having on job sectors.

  16. So that can spark a sense of insecurity.

  17. We've maybe seen the effect on our culture, our culture makers.

  18. Again, sense of insecurity.

  19. What does it mean for my intellectual property or even for my identity?

  20. Perhaps we feel somewhat insecure if we're less tech savvy.

  21. Will I be taken in by fake news or by scams developed by increasingly elaborate AI?

  22. Security functions often for us like our walls and our foundations.

  23. And when those start to crack, we can feel somewhat exposed and unprotected,

  24. uncertain about our present and about the future.

  25. And if we find ourselves in that place, and perhaps we do, perhaps we've been there recently,

  26. or if we know people in our lives who wrestle with anxiety and fears and uncertainty,

  27. then it's good for us to spend some time here.

  28. It's good for us to think together and to hear from the Bible, to hear from Jesus

  29. about the real and the lasting security that he offers.

  30. So we're going to ask ourselves some questions about this topic of security.

  31. We're going to explore some of the ways that we find ourselves searching for security,

  32. some of the challenges and the weaknesses to our different approaches,

  33. and we'll turn to hear what Jesus says about himself

  34. and the promise of security that's found in him.

  35. And as I said at the beginning, there'll be a chance for us to chat afterwards over tea and coffee

  36. if you have time to stick around.

  37. So the first question I suppose that we need to address is what is security for you?

  38. Because I think it's fair to say there's no one-size-security-fits-all.

  39. There are different ways that we look to find security,

  40. different ways that we feel either secure or insecure.

  41. I was thinking personally this week and recognizing that at different times

  42. and different phases of life, security looks different.

  43. So perhaps in sort of childhood and teenage years especially,

  44. security comes if I had a group of friends who were there

  45. and who liked me and who I could spend time with.

  46. Perhaps later it became, well, do I have enough money in the bank

  47. to make sure that all those bills get met?

  48. Sometimes it's finding security and having a family around.

  49. What is security for you?

  50. Perhaps it's a freedom from fear.

  51. The fear of illness or failure.

  52. The fear of losses.

  53. If we could live without those, then we'd feel secure.

  54. Perhaps security comes from reliable resources.

  55. It comes from having money in the bank.

  56. The house that's getting paid up.

  57. The job that has a decent salary and a level of stability.

  58. Perhaps it's reserves in case there are those crashes that come.

  59. For others of us, we may think about security in terms of the people in our lives.

  60. We may think about predictable relationships.

  61. Two of, I guess, the classic sitcoms of all times very much played on that.

  62. Friends theme tune, I'll be there for you.

  63. And cheers.

  64. You want to be where everybody knows your name.

  65. That idea of here is a group of people I can trust.

  66. They will show up when I need them.

  67. Sometimes we can find security in our plans.

  68. The plans that we have after we finish school or after we finish university.

  69. Perhaps we find security if we feel that our retirement is well cared for.

  70. Maybe we find security in just the idea of knowing a five-year plan.

  71. And so we find ourselves thinking and saying things like,

  72. if I just had that thing, then I'd be okay.

  73. You know, if I get the right product or if I make the right investment,

  74. if I land the right job or achieve in my career,

  75. if I belong to the right group or raise the right family,

  76. or if I have the right work-life balance

  77. and I can control my environment and my schedule,

  78. then I'll have security.

  79. So it's important from the outset to ask ourselves the question,

  80. what do we think security looks like?

  81. And that in part will take us to the second question,

  82. how do we try to fulfill the desire for security?

  83. This week I've been asking church members,

  84. in what way do we feel Jesus provides security?

  85. Because one of the things that we believe as Christians

  86. is that our faith offers us a unique power and stability.

  87. We have a security both in the present,

  88. knowing God is with us and for us,

  89. but security eternally.

  90. And it's been interesting to have those conversations

  91. and to hear themes reappearing,

  92. themes that actually very much link to this shepherd theme

  93. we've been considering.

  94. That sense of, in everyday experience,

  95. well, I know God is present to protect me and guide me.

  96. When I need help and wisdom,

  97. I know that I can pray.

  98. And I sense his love.

  99. There's a real security in that.

  100. And then people are talking about,

  101. well, in times of difficulty,

  102. times when perhaps those foundations were shaken.

  103. Still to know God is in control,

  104. to be able to rest in God keeps his promises,

  105. to have that reality that as we pray and connect with God,

  106. that brings a measure of peace.

  107. And even being able to keep going,

  108. knowing it's not in my strength,

  109. but it's God's strength.

  110. So there are remarkable resources

  111. within the Christian faith.

  112. Some of you may have seen the interview

  113. of Ben Ganondoke, the Scottish footballer.

  114. He's returned back to his childhood faith.

  115. And it was a really interesting interview.

  116. He's had a very prolonged and difficult injury recently.

  117. And he was reflecting on it saying setbacks,

  118. setbacks, they're part of God's plan.

  119. He spoke about relying heavily on God to keep him strong.

  120. He said this, he said,

  121. when you have God on your side,

  122. you know he's never going to forget about you

  123. and he's not going to abandon you.

  124. There is strength and security in God.

  125. And there seems to be common threads

  126. within Christian experience.

  127. And it's interesting to share our stories

  128. of how we see God provide security.

  129. But how do we search for security

  130. outside of and apart from God?

  131. I suspect it often involves one or a combination of these.

  132. And we probably find ourselves

  133. leaning into our possessions.

  134. There's a Bible proverb,

  135. I think it's in Proverbs 18,

  136. that says,

  137. the wealth of the rich is their fortified city.

  138. They imagine it a wall too high to scale.

  139. So picture a city under siege,

  140. but the residents feeling secure

  141. because they have strong walls and high walls.

  142. And the idea that money provides a safeguard,

  143. a protective wall from the shocks that might come.

  144. Another way that we search for security

  145. is in the people in our lives.

  146. There's lots of studies that speak about the early years,

  147. developmental stages,

  148. and when there is strong investment in those early years,

  149. good support networks,

  150. stable family,

  151. good nursery provision,

  152. it tends towards more stable,

  153. more confident,

  154. more resilient children.

  155. When we have people who love us,

  156. people we can trust,

  157. people we can rely on,

  158. that tends to bring

  159. an inner confidence

  160. and a security.

  161. It allows us perhaps to provide

  162. and build a stable identity.

  163. Or our family or our friends

  164. might become a form of an anchor

  165. when storms come

  166. so that we don't collapse under the pressure.

  167. There's a goodness, isn't there,

  168. when we have friends,

  169. when we have family,

  170. when we have a social group who stick by us.

  171. The Bible tells us that community is God's good design.

  172. Family is God's good design.

  173. There's a verse that we maybe have heard at a wedding,

  174. Ecclesiastes 4,

  175. though one may be overpowered,

  176. two can resist.

  177. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not easily broken.

  178. That sense of resilience from togetherness.

  179. So we might well find ourselves looking to people for security.

  180. We may, on the other hand,

  181. turn towards performance.

  182. Because one way that we can seek to find security

  183. is in our doing,

  184. our achieving,

  185. in our abilities.

  186. We might find job security

  187. knowing that we will,

  188. if we outperform others

  189. in our team

  190. or in our company.

  191. So long as we hit the right targets,

  192. if we perform,

  193. we can probably hope for security.

  194. Or maybe we imagine

  195. financial security

  196. if I have the wisdom

  197. and the prudence

  198. to make the right,

  199. careful investments.

  200. And so we can

  201. gain a sense of security

  202. from ourselves

  203. and our own abilities.

  204. Now,

  205. each of these,

  206. you know,

  207. people,

  208. possessions,

  209. the ability to perform,

  210. those are

  211. good things.

  212. Of course they are.

  213. But it's important for us

  214. to recognize

  215. there are limitations.

  216. That each of these

  217. can provide,

  218. they can provide

  219. at very least

  220. a temporary fix.

  221. But it's fair to say

  222. that they cannot remove

  223. every threat

  224. that we experience

  225. to our security.

  226. People will still leave

  227. and contracts will still end

  228. and oil prices

  229. will still spike.

  230. And more significantly

  231. than that,

  232. as we consider

  233. all the challenges

  234. that we face,

  235. none of these

  236. are able to offer

  237. any help

  238. when faced with

  239. the ultimate source

  240. of insecurity,

  241. which is our great enemy,

  242. death.

  243. And so as we're thinking

  244. about what gives us security,

  245. we need to think

  246. beyond,

  247. well,

  248. where do I look today

  249. to where do I hope

  250. will give me strength

  251. in that day?

  252. A third question is this,

  253. how can some of our strategies

  254. produce unhelpful results?

  255. Because it is important

  256. to recognize

  257. that in striving

  258. for security,

  259. sometimes that can lead us

  260. down unhelpful paths,

  261. unhelpful attitudes

  262. or patterns of behavior.

  263. For example,

  264. if I imagine

  265. that I will be secure

  266. if I have money,

  267. then that might tend

  268. towards my greed.

  269. Perhaps I will hoard

  270. instead of being generous.

  271. Perhaps it means

  272. I will live

  273. to consume

  274. rather than recognizing

  275. life is about more than.

  276. it may lead us

  277. to try and control

  278. and manipulate.

  279. If our performance

  280. is really important

  281. to our sense of security,

  282. then we might want

  283. to insist

  284. that everything

  285. and everyone around us

  286. is just so.

  287. And we can put a lot

  288. of pressure

  289. on other people

  290. demanding

  291. that everything

  292. be just right.

  293. there might be a pride

  294. that forms

  295. in our heart

  296. if security

  297. is found

  298. in my performance,

  299. striving to try

  300. and prove

  301. and justify myself

  302. compared to others.

  303. On the flip side,

  304. there might be despair

  305. when we find

  306. our security fails,

  307. when all our best efforts

  308. come to nothing.

  309. It was striking

  310. to see

  311. after the last,

  312. I guess,

  313. big global economic

  314. crash in 2008,

  315. the number

  316. of bank executives,

  317. people within

  318. the financial industry

  319. who committed suicide.

  320. Their security

  321. was gone.

  322. Their sense of identity

  323. was gone.

  324. We see it all too often

  325. as well

  326. with retired sports people

  327. when the fame

  328. is gone

  329. and they struggle.

  330. Some of our strategies

  331. can produce

  332. even the unhelpful result

  333. of

  334. idolatry.

  335. It's a Bible idea

  336. that I think

  337. we can all recognize

  338. when I place

  339. my ultimate trust

  340. in someone

  341. or something

  342. for security

  343. rather than

  344. in the one

  345. true

  346. and living God.

  347. So just to pause

  348. for a moment

  349. to take stock.

  350. I imagine

  351. each one of us here,

  352. we both value

  353. and we want security.

  354. We will all try

  355. and find it

  356. in different ways.

  357. But what I hope

  358. we're beginning to see

  359. is that when we try

  360. and do that ourselves

  361. without God,

  362. without Jesus,

  363. there are at least

  364. some times

  365. where we will find

  366. ourselves heading

  367. down the wrong roads.

  368. That we may find

  369. ourselves pursuing

  370. solutions that

  371. don't satisfy

  372. and there may still

  373. be that nagging feeling

  374. that something

  375. is still missing.

  376. Where we can't

  377. really rest

  378. because there's

  379. no sense

  380. of permanent

  381. security.

  382. And so it's

  383. important for us

  384. to have a chance

  385. to hear

  386. from Jesus.

  387. So turn with me

  388. to John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  389. to think about

  390. this image

  391. that he uses

  392. of himself

  393. as the shepherd

  394. as we ask

  395. ourselves

  396. one more question

  397. together.

  398. And the question

  399. is this,

  400. how does Jesus

  401. promise to fulfill

  402. our longing

  403. for security?

  404. So we have

  405. Jesus in verse 11

  406. saying,

  407. I am the good shepherd.

  408. Verse 14,

  409. I am the good shepherd.

  410. That image

  411. was an image

  412. used by God

  413. in the Old Testament

  414. also.

  415. It contains

  416. within it

  417. that idea

  418. of a covenant

  419. commitment

  420. to rescue

  421. and to bring

  422. a people

  423. to himself.

  424. It's a picture

  425. that's applied

  426. to kings.

  427. Here is God,

  428. the powerful,

  429. loving king

  430. who is committed

  431. to restoring people

  432. and ruling

  433. for their good

  434. and Jesus

  435. comes along

  436. and says,

  437. I am

  438. the good shepherd.

  439. So he's making

  440. a big claim

  441. about himself.

  442. He's claiming

  443. a title of God.

  444. And John

  445. is revealing

  446. to us

  447. that Jesus

  448. is none other

  449. than the son

  450. of God.

  451. And so as we

  452. listen in

  453. as Jesus

  454. speaks about himself

  455. and what he offers

  456. we need to recognize

  457. he's speaking

  458. to us

  459. not just

  460. as any old

  461. person,

  462. he's speaking

  463. to us

  464. as the son

  465. of God.

  466. And in this

  467. little section

  468. that we've read

  469. we discover

  470. three qualities

  471. of Jesus

  472. the good shepherd

  473. that all connect

  474. with this idea

  475. of security.

  476. So we'll think

  477. briefly about

  478. the personal

  479. relationship

  480. with Jesus

  481. that he offers

  482. the sacrificial

  483. salvation

  484. that he came

  485. to bring

  486. and the safety

  487. of belonging.

  488. So first of all

  489. to think about

  490. a personal

  491. relationship

  492. that Jesus

  493. offers

  494. a secure

  495. relationship

  496. that no one

  497. else

  498. in this world

  499. can match.

  500. Look at our

  501. verses

  502. we'll see a few

  503. ways this is true.

  504. Verse 12

  505. of John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  506. Jesus compares

  507. himself with a

  508. hired hand

  509. someone who

  510. works as a

  511. shepherd

  512. for pay

  513. but the sheep

  514. don't belong to him.

  515. The hired hand

  516. is not the shepherd

  517. and does not

  518. own the sheep

  519. so when he sees

  520. the wolf coming

  521. he abandons

  522. the sheep

  523. and runs away.

  524. Then the wolf

  525. attacks the flock

  526. and scatters it.

  527. The man runs

  528. away because

  529. he is a hired

  530. hand and cares

  531. nothing for

  532. the sheep.

  533. By contrast

  534. Jesus says

  535. I am the good

  536. shepherd

  537. and I lay

  538. down my life

  539. for the sheep.

  540. So Jesus

  541. is committed

  542. to us

  543. compared to

  544. this hired

  545. hand.

  546. There is a

  547. deeper relationship

  548. there is a

  549. selfless service

  550. that Jesus

  551. is the kind

  552. who will

  553. not turn

  554. and run

  555. when the

  556. wolves

  557. come.

  558. When the

  559. trials

  560. come

  561. rather

  562. Jesus

  563. will place

  564. himself

  565. in harm's

  566. way

  567. for the

  568. good of

  569. his

  570. sheep.

  571. He is

  572. committed to

  573. us

  574. and he

  575. knows

  576. us.

  577. He continues

  578. in verse

  579. 14

  580. I am the

  581. good shepherd

  582. I know

  583. my sheep

  584. and my

  585. sheep know

  586. me

  587. just as

  588. the father

  589. knows me

  590. and I

  591. know the

  592. father.

  593. And so

  594. there is

  595. another

  596. comparison

  597. here.

  598. So just

  599. as the

  600. father and

  601. the son

  602. within the

  603. eternal

  604. trinity

  605. they know

  606. one another

  607. and they

  608. love one

  609. another

  610. and they

  611. delight in

  612. each other

  613. and they

  614. can't be

  615. separated

  616. from each

  617. other

  618. and they're

  619. in the

  620. closest

  621. possible

  622. relationship

  623. to one

  624. another

  625. Jesus

  626. says the

  627. same is

  628. true between

  629. me and

  630. my people.

  631. He's

  632. committed

  633. to us

  634. he knows

  635. us

  636. and in

  637. verse 16

  638. he also

  639. calls us

  640. I have

  641. other sheep

  642. that are

  643. not of

  644. this

  645. sheepfold

  646. I must

  647. bring them

  648. also

  649. they too

  650. will listen

  651. to my

  652. voice

  653. and there

  654. shall be

  655. one flock

  656. and one

  657. shepherd.

  658. So there's

  659. another

  660. comparison

  661. Jesus

  662. compares

  663. himself

  664. with

  665. the

  666. strangers

  667. with

  668. thieves

  669. and robbers

  670. who would

  671. come along

  672. and want

  673. to take

  674. the sheep

  675. away

  676. but the

  677. sheep

  678. recognize

  679. that's

  680. not a

  681. voice

  682. to be

  683. trusted

  684. rather

  685. they will

  686. listen

  687. to the

  688. shepherd

  689. because

  690. this

  691. shepherd

  692. invites

  693. us

  694. into

  695. relationship

  696. he is

  697. the one

  698. who has

  699. our best

  700. interest

  701. at heart

  702. he is

  703. the one

  704. who will

  705. seek

  706. and save

  707. and call

  708. to bring

  709. into

  710. his flock

  711. and in

  712. that flock

  713. there is

  714. safety

  715. and there

  716. is this

  717. promise

  718. that Jesus

  719. voice is

  720. powerful

  721. and effective

  722. and he

  723. calls people

  724. into

  725. the security

  726. of

  727. relationship

  728. with

  729. himself

  730. and so

  731. in this

  732. whole section

  733. Jesus is

  734. announcing

  735. to us

  736. that he

  737. provides

  738. personal

  739. relational

  740. security

  741. the text

  742. is full

  743. of eyes

  744. Jesus

  745. personal

  746. commitment

  747. as the

  748. shepherd

  749. to his

  750. people

  751. his sheep

  752. and that's

  753. the story

  754. that some

  755. of you

  756. have been

  757. sharing

  758. and it's

  759. the story

  760. that I

  761. imagine

  762. are the

  763. testimony

  764. of many

  765. of us

  766. who are

  767. Christians

  768. that we

  769. go into

  770. dark

  771. places

  772. and we

  773. know

  774. Jesus

  775. is with

  776. us

  777. and for

  778. us

  779. and he's

  780. actually

  781. been there

  782. first

  783. of feeling

  784. overwhelmed

  785. but then

  786. at the

  787. same time

  788. experiencing

  789. a sense

  790. of peace

  791. and comfort

  792. from knowing

  793. Jesus is

  794. there

  795. even those

  796. stories of

  797. having

  798. wandered

  799. far away

  800. those times

  801. perhaps of

  802. wanting nothing

  803. to do

  804. with Jesus

  805. but still

  806. patiently

  807. persistently

  808. searching

  809. to bring

  810. us back

  811. and it's

  812. this Jesus

  813. who invites

  814. each one

  815. to trust

  816. him for

  817. security

  818. to find

  819. that one

  820. relationship

  821. that will

  822. never end

  823. that one

  824. relationship

  825. that cannot

  826. be broken

  827. even by

  828. death

  829. to place

  830. our lives

  831. in the hands

  832. of one

  833. who will

  834. never leave

  835. us

  836. or fail

  837. us

  838. there is

  839. security

  840. in a

  841. personal

  842. relationship

  843. with Jesus

  844. here is

  845. a second

  846. way that

  847. Jesus

  848. promises

  849. to fulfill

  850. our longing

  851. for security

  852. it's in

  853. his

  854. sacrificial

  855. salvation

  856. Jesus offers

  857. to remove

  858. threats

  859. that no one

  860. else can

  861. three times

  862. in our

  863. verses

  864. we heard

  865. Jesus say

  866. I lay

  867. down my

  868. life for

  869. the sheep

  870. it's there

  871. in verse

  872. 11

  873. it's there

  874. in verse

  875. 15

  876. and it's

  877. there in

  878. verse 17

  879. let me read

  880. it there in

  881. verse 17

  882. the reason

  883. my father

  884. loves me

  885. is that I

  886. lay down

  887. my life

  888. only to

  889. take it

  890. up again

  891. no one

  892. takes it

  893. from me

  894. but I

  895. lay it

  896. down

  897. of my

  898. own

  899. accord

  900. I have

  901. authority

  902. to lay

  903. it down

  904. and authority

  905. to take

  906. it up

  907. again

  908. and so

  909. we're invited

  910. to picture

  911. the scene

  912. with Jesus

  913. as he

  914. uses this

  915. image of

  916. sheep

  917. and a

  918. shepherd

  919. to picture

  920. flock

  921. on a

  922. hillside

  923. and they're

  924. being led

  925. by a

  926. shepherd

  927. perhaps

  928. they're

  929. feeding on

  930. good

  931. pasture

  932. but then

  933. from the

  934. rocky

  935. crags

  936. come the

  937. wolves

  938. and the

  939. wolves

  940. surround

  941. the

  942. sheep

  943. and while

  944. the hired

  945. hand

  946. will turn

  947. and run

  948. we have

  949. this picture

  950. that Jesus

  951. gives of

  952. himself

  953. the shepherd

  954. who makes

  955. his stand

  956. with club

  957. in hand

  958. perhaps with

  959. a short

  960. sword

  961. drawn

  962. here is a

  963. shepherd

  964. who will

  965. fight

  966. for his

  967. sheep

  968. and remarkably

  969. dying

  970. so his

  971. sheep

  972. would live

  973. this teaching

  974. is in the

  975. form of a

  976. parable

  977. and whenever

  978. Jesus tells

  979. a parable

  980. a story

  981. and you

  982. find a

  983. surprising

  984. detail

  985. you know

  986. this is

  987. where the

  988. meaning

  989. lies

  990. and so

  991. Jesus

  992. wants us

  993. to take

  994. us beyond

  995. the metaphor

  996. of here's a

  997. shepherd

  998. here's a

  999. sheep

  1000. to think

  1001. about

  1002. Jesus

  1003. own

  1004. mission

  1005. to think

  1006. about

  1007. his

  1008. mission

  1009. of coming

  1010. to sacrifice

  1011. himself

  1012. in order

  1013. to save

  1014. others

  1015. that Jesus

  1016. uses this

  1017. parable

  1018. actually to

  1019. speak to

  1020. us about

  1021. the cross

  1022. think about

  1023. those words

  1024. in verse

  1025. 17

  1026. the father

  1027. Jesus says

  1028. he loves

  1029. me because

  1030. what does

  1031. Jesus do

  1032. the father

  1033. loves the

  1034. son because

  1035. the son

  1036. lays down

  1037. his life

  1038. and so

  1039. all of a

  1040. sudden we're

  1041. discovering

  1042. something about

  1043. the eternal

  1044. love of

  1045. God the

  1046. eternal plan

  1047. of God

  1048. that God

  1049. the father

  1050. will send

  1051. the son

  1052. and that

  1053. God the

  1054. son will

  1055. come in

  1056. order to

  1057. suffer and

  1058. die

  1059. in order to

  1060. save his

  1061. sheep to

  1062. save sinners

  1063. to provide

  1064. eternal

  1065. security

  1066. the father

  1067. loves this

  1068. son who

  1069. with all

  1070. authority

  1071. gladly

  1072. lovingly

  1073. lays down

  1074. his life

  1075. for the

  1076. good of

  1077. others

  1078. it's a

  1079. remarkable

  1080. statement

  1081. and within

  1082. verse 17

  1083. there's another

  1084. remarkable

  1085. statement

  1086. there's a

  1087. massive claim

  1088. that Jesus

  1089. has authority

  1090. to lay

  1091. down his

  1092. life only

  1093. to take

  1094. it up

  1095. again

  1096. so we

  1097. find ourselves

  1098. on the way

  1099. to Easter

  1100. and Jesus

  1101. here is

  1102. taking us

  1103. to the

  1104. events of

  1105. Easter

  1106. reminding us

  1107. that he

  1108. will die

  1109. on that

  1110. Roman cross

  1111. but he

  1112. will walk

  1113. free of

  1114. the tomb

  1115. on Easter

  1116. Sunday

  1117. and as we

  1118. put those

  1119. two truths

  1120. together

  1121. the twin

  1122. truths of

  1123. Jesus

  1124. death and

  1125. resurrection

  1126. we can see

  1127. that there is

  1128. power in

  1129. Jesus to

  1130. remove

  1131. some of

  1132. those ultimate

  1133. threats

  1134. against us

  1135. one of

  1136. those

  1137. things

  1138. is the

  1139. guilt

  1140. that we

  1141. experience

  1142. whenever we

  1143. find ourselves

  1144. recognizing

  1145. that there

  1146. is a

  1147. God

  1148. with whom

  1149. we have

  1150. to deal

  1151. and we

  1152. know that

  1153. we have

  1154. done things

  1155. that are

  1156. wrong

  1157. and that

  1158. we have

  1159. broken

  1160. his command

  1161. then we

  1162. become aware

  1163. of our

  1164. guilt

  1165. and the

  1166. wonderful news

  1167. about Jesus

  1168. is that he

  1169. has come to

  1170. be the answer

  1171. to our

  1172. guilt

  1173. because when

  1174. Jesus dies

  1175. and it's

  1176. here in the

  1177. image

  1178. he does

  1179. so as a

  1180. sacrifice

  1181. and just as

  1182. the sacrifices

  1183. offered in the

  1184. Old Testament

  1185. were a way to

  1186. cover over

  1187. guilt and

  1188. shame and

  1189. sin

  1190. so Jesus

  1191. ultimate

  1192. sacrifice on

  1193. the cross

  1194. covers our

  1195. guilt and

  1196. shame and

  1197. sin because

  1198. he does it

  1199. not for

  1200. his sin

  1201. but for

  1202. ours and

  1203. he does it

  1204. as a

  1205. substitute

  1206. Jesus the

  1207. judge is

  1208. judged in

  1209. our place

  1210. so that

  1211. when our

  1212. trust is

  1213. in Jesus

  1214. God's

  1215. verdict on

  1216. our life

  1217. must be a

  1218. positive

  1219. verdict

  1220. because Jesus

  1221. has secured

  1222. that positive

  1223. verdict through

  1224. his death

  1225. and his

  1226. resurrection

  1227. so when we

  1228. trust in

  1229. Jesus we

  1230. can know

  1231. today that

  1232. we will not

  1233. be condemned

  1234. that we will

  1235. be welcomed

  1236. and accepted

  1237. into heaven

  1238. that we are

  1239. as loved

  1240. as Jesus

  1241. is loved

  1242. there is

  1243. real security

  1244. in that

  1245. there is

  1246. security

  1247. from Jesus

  1248. death and

  1249. resurrection

  1250. from the

  1251. fear of

  1252. death

  1253. isn't this

  1254. the ultimate

  1255. storm that

  1256. shakes our

  1257. foundations

  1258. isn't this

  1259. the great

  1260. wolf that

  1261. would destroy

  1262. all our

  1263. great plans

  1264. and securities

  1265. it's the

  1266. last enemy

  1267. how is it

  1268. that Jesus

  1269. is able to

  1270. give security

  1271. even as we

  1272. consider our

  1273. own death

  1274. because he

  1275. has conquered

  1276. death and

  1277. the grave

  1278. and his

  1279. resurrection

  1280. stands for

  1281. us as

  1282. proof

  1283. and now

  1284. where Jesus

  1285. is resurrected

  1286. to new life

  1287. and ascended

  1288. to the glory

  1289. of heaven

  1290. where he

  1291. where he

  1292. Jesus is

  1293. his people

  1294. will follow

  1295. he is the

  1296. shepherd who

  1297. won't lose

  1298. any of his

  1299. flock

  1300. he will make

  1301. sure that we

  1302. are safely

  1303. brought into

  1304. pasture as it

  1305. were from

  1306. here until

  1307. eternity

  1308. there is

  1309. security

  1310. a few

  1311. chapters later

  1312. in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  1313. chapter 14

  1314. Jesus speaks

  1315. to his

  1316. friends and

  1317. his disciples

  1318. he says

  1319. don't let

  1320. your hearts

  1321. be troubled

  1322. he knows

  1323. that they

  1324. know that

  1325. Jesus is

  1326. about to

  1327. die and

  1328. they're

  1329. troubled

  1330. about what

  1331. that means

  1332. for Jesus

  1333. and for

  1334. them

  1335. don't be

  1336. troubled

  1337. and he

  1338. tells them

  1339. that his

  1340. journey will

  1341. take him

  1342. from the

  1343. cross

  1344. to the

  1345. resurrection

  1346. and back

  1347. to his

  1348. father's

  1349. home

  1350. and he

  1351. says

  1352. listen

  1353. I'm

  1354. going back

  1355. to my

  1356. father's

  1357. home

  1358. and I'm

  1359. preparing a

  1360. place for

  1361. you and

  1362. I'll come

  1363. back and

  1364. take you

  1365. to be

  1366. with me

  1367. that you

  1368. may be

  1369. where I

  1370. am

  1371. and so

  1372. the bible

  1373. allows us

  1374. to face

  1375. death

  1376. with a

  1377. sense of

  1378. honest

  1379. confidence

  1380. we are

  1381. honest

  1382. death is

  1383. a horrible

  1384. reality

  1385. it is a

  1386. great enemy

  1387. but for a

  1388. Christian

  1389. there is

  1390. that wonderful

  1391. security

  1392. from Jesus

  1393. that he

  1394. will take

  1395. us home

  1396. to be

  1397. with himself

  1398. that truly

  1399. for the

  1400. believer

  1401. death is

  1402. the last

  1403. enemy

  1404. there is a

  1405. promise of

  1406. life after

  1407. death that

  1408. will be

  1409. perfect

  1410. that will

  1411. be without

  1412. enemies

  1413. that will

  1414. be joyful

  1415. and secure

  1416. and with

  1417. Jesus

  1418. forever

  1419. and so

  1420. thirdly and

  1421. finally

  1422. we come to

  1423. understand from

  1424. Jesus words

  1425. and from the

  1426. bible that

  1427. there is a

  1428. safety

  1429. a security

  1430. that comes

  1431. from belonging

  1432. to Jesus

  1433. I think it's

  1434. part of the

  1435. beauty of the

  1436. shepherd image

  1437. you know we

  1438. can recognize

  1439. by ourselves

  1440. how prone

  1441. we are to be

  1442. like sheep

  1443. we can feel

  1444. weakness

  1445. we can feel

  1446. foolish

  1447. we can be

  1448. prone to

  1449. wander

  1450. sometimes we

  1451. will follow

  1452. the flock

  1453. and we will

  1454. head for

  1455. danger

  1456. but with

  1457. Jesus as

  1458. good shepherd

  1459. we know

  1460. that he will

  1461. always lead

  1462. us towards

  1463. life

  1464. that we will

  1465. always experience

  1466. God's love

  1467. that we will

  1468. be part of

  1469. his family

  1470. forever

  1471. that nothing

  1472. can separate

  1473. us from

  1474. God's love

  1475. or God's

  1476. goodness

  1477. or God's

  1478. mercy

  1479. when we

  1480. know Jesus

  1481. as our

  1482. good shepherd

  1483. and so he

  1484. invites us

  1485. to swap

  1486. our anxiety

  1487. and our

  1488. insecurity

  1489. to lay down

  1490. our consuming

  1491. our striving

  1492. our attempts

  1493. to control

  1494. and manage

  1495. our environment

  1496. to forge

  1497. a security

  1498. for ourselves

  1499. and to

  1500. replace that

  1501. with a simple

  1502. reliance

  1503. and dependence

  1504. on Jesus

  1505. to turn our

  1506. back on

  1507. those self

  1508. made attempts

  1509. at security

  1510. from trusting

  1511. in other things

  1512. to save us

  1513. and instead

  1514. to trust

  1515. in the one

  1516. who died

  1517. to save us

  1518. to believe

  1519. that Jesus

  1520. really is

  1521. the son of

  1522. God

  1523. he really is

  1524. the promised

  1525. saviour

  1526. he really is

  1527. a good shepherd

  1528. and that in

  1529. Jesus

  1530. there is

  1531. present security

  1532. and there is

  1533. the eternal

  1534. security

  1535. that we all

  1536. long for

  1537. and it's

  1538. found

  1539. in life

  1540. with Jesus

  1541. let's pray

  1542. to

  1543. He really is

  1544. a good shepherd

  1545. to

  1546. God

  1547. He really is

  1548. a good shepherd

  1549. He really is

  1550. a good shepherd

  1551. He really is

  1552. of God

  1553. and He really is

  1554. a good shepherd

  1555. and He really is

  1556. and He really is

  1557. and He really is

  1558. of God

  1559. and He really is

  1560. a good shepherd

  1561. of God

  1562. a good shepherd

  1563. of God

  1564. and He really is

  1565. !

  1566. of God

  1567. and He really is
