  1. Today's scripture reading is from Luke chapter 4, the whole chapter.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  2. ! Please follow along in your Bible or the Church Bible.

  3. ! Our passage can be found on page 831 in the Church Bible.

  4. On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared,

  5. and they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  6. But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

  7. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.

  8. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the man said to them,

  9. Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has reason.

  10. Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee,

  11. that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise.

  12. And they remembered his words.

  13. And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

  14. Now it was Mary, Madeline, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James, and the other women with them,

  15. who told these things to the apostles.

  16. But this was what seems to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.

  17. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb, stooping and looking in.

  18. He saw the linen cloths by themselves, and he went home, marveling at what had happened.

  19. That very day, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

  20. And they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

  21. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.

  22. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  23. And he said to them,

  24. What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?

  25. And they stood still, looking sad.

  26. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him,

  27. Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?

  28. And he said to them,

  29. What things?

  30. And they said to him,

  31. Concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  32. a man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

  33. and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

  34. But we had hope that he was the one to redeem Israel.

  35. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

  36. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us.

  37. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body,

  38. they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

  39. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said.

  40. But him they did not see.

  41. And he said to them,

  42. O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  43. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?

  44. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  45. he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

  46. So they drew near to the village to which they were going.

  47. He acted as if he were going farther,

  48. but they urged him strongly, saying,

  49. Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent.

  50. So he went in to stay with them.

  51. When he was at table with them,

  52. he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.

  53. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.

  54. And he vanished from their sight.

  55. They said to each other,

  56. Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road,

  57. while he opened to us the scriptures?

  58. And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem.

  59. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,

  60. saying,

  61. The Lord has risen indeed and has appeared to Simon.

  62. Then they told what had happened on the road

  63. and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

  64. As they were talking about these things,

  65. Jesus himself stood among them and said to them,

  66. Peace to you.

  67. But they were startled and frightened and thought that they saw a spirit.

  68. And he said to them,

  69. Why are you troubled?

  70. And why do doubts arise in your hearts?

  71. See my hands and my feet,

  72. that it is I myself.

  73. Touch me and see,

  74. for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.

  75. And when he had said this,

  76. he showed them his hands and his feet.

  77. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling,

  78. he said to them,

  79. Have you anything here to eat?

  80. They gave him a piece of broiled fish,

  81. and he took it and ate before them.

  82. Then he said to them,

  83. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you,

  84. that everything written about me in the Lord of Moses

  85. and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

  86. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures

  87. and said to them,

  88. Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer

  89. and on the third day rise from the dead,

  90. and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins

  91. should be proclaimed in his name to all nations,

  92. beginning from Jerusalem.

  93. You are witnesses of these things,

  94. and behold,

  95. I am sending the promise of my Father appoint you,

  96. but stay in the city

  97. until you are clothed with power from on high.

  98. And he led them out as far as Bethany,

  99. and lifting up his hands, he blessed them.

  100. While he blessed them,

  101. he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

  102. And they worshipped him

  103. and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

  104. and were continually in the temple blessing God.

  105. Let us believe and respond to God's true and living word.

  106. Great. Thanks, Colin and Kristen.

  107. Well, once again, good morning.

  108. Great to see you here.

  109. If you are visiting for the first time,

  110. my name is Kevin,

  111. and it's a joy to be with you this morning.

  112. Now, each year,

  113. billions and billions of dollars around the world,

  114. which legally belong to individuals,

  115. such as you and I,

  116. go unclaimed and unaccounted for.

  117. Stocks, dividends,

  118. mutual funds purchased decades ago,

  119. long forgotten about,

  120. insurance payouts,

  121. which beneficiaries never knew existed,

  122. contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes,

  123. which are so safe,

  124. they're still in there,

  125. even payroll checks that were from former employees,

  126. employers that were never collected.

  127. Sometimes a loved one dies,

  128. and they've got a life insurance policy,

  129. but their loved ones never know about it.

  130. And so they never collect the insurance policy,

  131. meaning significant sums of money

  132. that the person wanted their loved ones to have

  133. on their passing,

  134. go uncollected and accounted for.

  135. Friends, I wonder how you would feel

  136. if one day you're on your deathbed,

  137. you've got a few hours left to live,

  138. and someone comes here and says,

  139. don't you know those tens,

  140. even hundreds of millions of dollars

  141. that belong to you?

  142. You haven't claimed them?

  143. You haven't collected them?

  144. They're all going to waste.

  145. What a pity it would be

  146. if you never claimed,

  147. never enjoyed all that was rightfully yours.

  148. Well, in order to enjoy the benefits

  149. that are rightly ours,

  150. we need to clearly and thoroughly understand

  151. what it is that has been given to us,

  152. what it is that we have,

  153. what it is that we are entitled to.

  154. Now this morning,

  155. we're looking at Luke's gospel, Luke 24,

  156. and we're going to see a glimpse

  157. of just what it is

  158. that Christ has accomplished for us

  159. through his death and resurrection.

  160. If you've got a Bible, keep it open.

  161. We're going to look at a couple of verses.

  162. We're going to be looking at that

  163. over the next half an hour or so.

  164. But this weekend is obviously Easter weekend.

  165. It is the high point of the Christian life,

  166. the Christian calendar.

  167. I hope that many of you were able

  168. to join us this weekend

  169. at the journey of the cross

  170. as we went through this hall

  171. and followed Jesus on his journey

  172. from Gethsemane to the tomb.

  173. But of course,

  174. the Easter story doesn't end on the cross.

  175. It doesn't even end in Joseph's tomb.

  176. The Easter story continues

  177. through Good Friday to Resurrection Sunday

  178. when the disciples encounter

  179. the risen, resurrected Christ.

  180. And that's what we're going to look at today.

  181. Now if you were paying attention

  182. during the reading,

  183. you'll notice that Luke here

  184. gives three accounts

  185. of very ordinary people

  186. that encounter the risen Christ.

  187. Three different stories of these people.

  188. And these accounts are all similar

  189. and different in some ways.

  190. I don't know if you have ever seen

  191. a piece of artwork

  192. made up of three panels.

  193. There we go, something like that.

  194. It's called a triptych, I think,

  195. is the technical word.

  196. It's one piece of artwork

  197. made of three panels.

  198. And each art piece

  199. is not exactly the same as the others,

  200. but there's a continuation.

  201. There's a story that's told

  202. as you put them together.

  203. And the meaning of the art

  204. is found in both the similarities

  205. and the differences.

  206. As you look at each individual piece,

  207. it tells you something.

  208. But as you look at the piece together,

  209. it tells you a much fuller story.

  210. Luke's description of the resurrection

  211. is something like this.

  212. He gives us three accounts

  213. of people encountering the risen Jesus,

  214. which each speak to us individually,

  215. but also together as a whole.

  216. So let's take a look at them.

  217. So the first story is this.

  218. The first one happens early in the morning.

  219. John's gospel tells us

  220. this happened while it was still dark.

  221. Mary Magdalene and some other ladies

  222. go towards the tomb with spices

  223. that they'd prepared

  224. to freshly anoint the body.

  225. But to their great surprise,

  226. upon arriving at the tomb,

  227. they discover the stone

  228. has been rolled away.

  229. The tomb is empty.

  230. And while they're wondering

  231. what's going on,

  232. they're probably assuming

  233. that either robbers have come in

  234. during the night

  235. or maybe the authorities

  236. have stolen the body

  237. and hid in it.

  238. Jesus was a controversial figure.

  239. While they're wondering

  240. and trying to make sense of this,

  241. two angels appear

  242. and say to them,

  243. why do you seek the living

  244. in the place of the dead?

  245. He is not here.

  246. He has risen,

  247. just as he told you.

  248. And these ladies

  249. discover the empty tomb.

  250. Now, you may be new to church.

  251. You may be new to Christianity.

  252. And you may be saying,

  253. come on, come on, come on.

  254. Dead people don't rise.

  255. Who do you take me to be?

  256. Am I a fool?

  257. Maybe you're a scientist.

  258. Maybe you say,

  259. listen, this is the 21st century.

  260. We know these things, right?

  261. But isn't that exactly the point?

  262. Just like you and me,

  263. these women went to the tomb

  264. not expecting it to be empty,

  265. not expecting not to find a body.

  266. They went there knowing

  267. that dead bodies don't rise.

  268. They went there expecting

  269. to find the tomb sealed,

  270. Jesus behind the tomb,

  271. and dead as he was on Friday.

  272. N.T. Wright,

  273. the famous theologian academic,

  274. said ancient people knew perfectly well

  275. that dead people don't rise.

  276. We don't need modern science

  277. to tell us that.

  278. And that's exactly true, right?

  279. Despite everything

  280. that Jesus had said to them,

  281. they were expecting a tomb

  282. that was sealed in the body

  283. behind the stone.

  284. They were no more expecting

  285. an empty tomb

  286. than you and I would expect

  287. to come home

  288. from our grandmother's funeral,

  289. to walk into the living room,

  290. and there she is,

  291. sitting, eating dim sum, right?

  292. That's what they were expecting,

  293. a tomb

  294. with a stone rolled over,

  295. Jesus behind there.

  296. The other gospel writers

  297. tell us

  298. that the tomb

  299. was sealed,

  300. shut.

  301. There were guards

  302. put in place

  303. to make sure

  304. that no robbers

  305. could steal the body,

  306. and the disciples

  307. couldn't come

  308. and take the body

  309. and claim that he was risen.

  310. And yet,

  311. despite that,

  312. every precaution

  313. was taken

  314. to make sure

  315. the body of Jesus

  316. remained in place.

  317. And yet,

  318. these first eyewitnesses,

  319. against their own intuition,

  320. against everything

  321. they knew

  322. about life and death,

  323. came to see

  324. that the once sealed,

  325. heavily guarded tomb

  326. was empty.

  327. Now,

  328. some people might say,

  329. yeah,

  330. but, you know,

  331. the disciples,

  332. they were obviously

  333. intellectually

  334. or emotionally biased.

  335. I mean,

  336. they were looking

  337. for a resurrection.

  338. And so,

  339. they confused

  340. the hallucinations

  341. with visions.

  342. And they confused

  343. these visions

  344. thinking they saw

  345. the real Jesus.

  346. They thought

  347. this was appearances

  348. of Jesus.

  349. But friends,

  350. can't you see

  351. the whole point

  352. the historical writers

  353. are making

  354. is just how much

  355. these first witnesses

  356. were not expecting

  357. to find Jesus.

  358. They weren't biased at all.

  359. They weren't looking

  360. for a risen Christ.

  361. They were looking

  362. for a dead body.

  363. And yet,

  364. despite everything

  365. that they should have known,

  366. what they saw

  367. was the empty tomb

  368. and were reminded

  369. of what Jesus said.

  370. Okay,

  371. first story.

  372. Second story,

  373. what happens?

  374. Now it's mid-afternoon.

  375. Sunday afternoon,

  376. three days after,

  377. Jesus has been crucified.

  378. It's Sunday afternoon.

  379. Here we have two disciples.

  380. One of them is a man

  381. called Cleopas.

  382. The other one,

  383. we don't know their name.

  384. And they're walking

  385. the 11 kilometer journey

  386. from Jerusalem

  387. to a town called Emmaus.

  388. And along the way,

  389. Jesus himself

  390. comes and walks

  391. alongside them.

  392. And he hears them talking

  393. and Jesus plays the fool.

  394. He plays ignorant.

  395. And he says,

  396. hey,

  397. what are you guys

  398. talking about?

  399. And they say,

  400. where have you been?

  401. Don't you know?

  402. Jesus of Nazareth.

  403. The one that we had

  404. high expectations for.

  405. He's been killed.

  406. The authorities killed him.

  407. And they say,

  408. don't you know

  409. what's been going on

  410. in Jerusalem?

  411. And sorry,

  412. Jesus says,

  413. no, no,

  414. what's been going on?

  415. Tell me.

  416. And they tell him

  417. about himself.

  418. They say,

  419. you know,

  420. Jesus,

  421. the one we had hoped

  422. would save Israel,

  423. rescue Israel.

  424. And Jesus plays along

  425. for a little while

  426. and then Jesus says,

  427. but isn't that what

  428. the Old Testament

  429. scriptures said

  430. was to happen?

  431. And starting with

  432. the Old Testament,

  433. Jesus goes through

  434. all the Old Testament

  435. and shows them,

  436. reveals to them

  437. how the Messiah

  438. has to die in judgment

  439. for the sin of his people.

  440. Rise again in vindication.

  441. And then they stop

  442. for an early dinner

  443. and as they are

  444. breaking bread,

  445. suddenly their eyes

  446. are opened

  447. and they realize

  448. who it is

  449. that's in front of them

  450. and Jesus is no longer there.

  451. And what do they say?

  452. They say,

  453. did not our hearts

  454. burn within us

  455. while he talked to us

  456. on the road

  457. and opened the scriptures?

  458. Here they encountered Jesus

  459. in such a profound way.

  460. It wasn't just intellectually.

  461. It wasn't just like,

  462. oh wow,

  463. okay,

  464. I guess let's just

  465. connect the dots.

  466. It wasn't just emotionally.

  467. They didn't have

  468. an emotional reaction.

  469. There's something

  470. so profoundly deep

  471. within them

  472. that the deepest longings,

  473. the deepest yearnings,

  474. the deepest hopes

  475. of their hearts

  476. were being engaged

  477. as they realized

  478. Jesus is not dead.

  479. He's alive.

  480. And the point here

  481. is that these disciples,

  482. they didn't see

  483. the empty tomb.

  484. For them,

  485. they encountered

  486. the risen Jesus.

  487. How?

  488. In the scriptures

  489. and in the sacraments

  490. as they connected the dots

  491. and saw that Jesus was alive.

  492. How about the third story?

  493. Well, the third story,

  494. it's now evening time.

  495. So we've had morning,

  496. we've had afternoon.

  497. It's now the evening.

  498. And Jesus appears again

  499. amongst the rest

  500. of his disciples

  501. in the house

  502. where they're staying.

  503. And they not only see him,

  504. but they touch him.

  505. Jesus says,

  506. feel my hands,

  507. look at my feet,

  508. where the,

  509. he says,

  510. touch me and see.

  511. Look,

  512. a spirit doesn't have

  513. these things.

  514. And the point here

  515. is that Jesus appears

  516. to them in physical,

  517. bodily form.

  518. This is not a spirit.

  519. This is not,

  520. Jesus just rose

  521. in their hearts

  522. philosophically.

  523. Jesus didn't appear

  524. from another world

  525. and send them a message

  526. from another world.

  527. Jesus physically,

  528. bodily appeared

  529. in their midst

  530. and showed them

  531. that he had risen

  532. from the dead.

  533. And he eats with them

  534. and he speaks with them

  535. and he communes with them

  536. and he reveals himself

  537. to them.

  538. Okay,

  539. so there's three

  540. different stories.

  541. Now,

  542. what's the point

  543. of all this?

  544. Why is Luke

  545. telling us these stories?

  546. Why didn't Luke

  547. just give us one story?

  548. Luke is building a case here.

  549. Luke is like a good lawyer,

  550. a good barrister,

  551. right?

  552. And he's building

  553. an argument

  554. and he's getting

  555. all his witnesses

  556. in place.

  557. Imagine here in Hong Kong

  558. there's a motor car

  559. accident somewhere,

  560. right?

  561. And somebody

  562. is tragically killed.

  563. And the prosecutors,

  564. the DOJ,

  565. they want to prosecute

  566. the driver

  567. for maybe manslaughter

  568. or reckless driving.

  569. And so they're building

  570. their case

  571. and they get

  572. all their witnesses

  573. and they find a lady

  574. who was on the side

  575. of the road

  576. and witnessed the accident.

  577. And then they see

  578. there's a residential block

  579. across the road

  580. and there's a guard

  581. that stays in the guardhouse

  582. and he witnessed everything.

  583. And then they find

  584. the car driving behind

  585. and they've got

  586. a dashboard camera

  587. and the camera

  588. witnessed everything

  589. and they get

  590. their three witnesses

  591. all from different angles

  592. and they say,

  593. tell us your story.

  594. What did you see?

  595. What did you see?

  596. And the witnesses

  597. all tell the same story

  598. but from a different angle.

  599. Oh, I saw this happen.

  600. I saw this happen.

  601. It's the same story.

  602. Luke here is like a barrister.

  603. He's building his case

  604. and each narrative

  605. tells us the same story

  606. from a different angle.

  607. The woman discover

  608. an empty tomb.

  609. The stone is rolled away.

  610. There's nobody inside

  611. and they get a message

  612. saying this is the place

  613. of the dead.

  614. Why are you looking

  615. for living people here?

  616. The disciples

  617. on the road to Emmaus,

  618. they encounter Jesus

  619. but they don't recognize him.

  620. They encounter Jesus

  621. in the scriptures

  622. and in the sacraments.

  623. As Jesus opens

  624. the scriptures

  625. and breaks bread

  626. and they recognize

  627. Jesus is with us.

  628. And then the other,

  629. the 11 apostles

  630. and the others with him,

  631. they see Jesus physically.

  632. They touch him.

  633. They hold him.

  634. They look at the marks

  635. in his hands.

  636. And Luke is saying,

  637. look at all the witnesses.

  638. But each time

  639. the case is building

  640. and the evidence

  641. is getting more

  642. and more substantial.

  643. So the two women,

  644. they go to the tomb

  645. but they don't actually

  646. see Jesus.

  647. They just see the tomb

  648. is empty

  649. and they hear angels.

  650. It's not the most

  651. compelling evidence.

  652. But then,

  653. the two disciples,

  654. they actually see Jesus

  655. and they've got

  656. a thousand years

  657. of testimony

  658. and witness

  659. and oh,

  660. it makes sense.

  661. And then finally,

  662. the 11 apostles,

  663. these are God's

  664. authorized disciples

  665. that are going to go out.

  666. They actually physically

  667. see Jesus

  668. and touch him.

  669. The case is building,

  670. building, building.

  671. And Luke's point here is,

  672. it's real.

  673. It's not what any

  674. of the disciples expected.

  675. It's not what they

  676. were looking for.

  677. No one had the bias

  678. that Jesus is going

  679. to rise again

  680. and yet it happened.

  681. It's true.

  682. It's real.

  683. Jesus really rose.

  684. Except,

  685. Luke is saying

  686. more than that,

  687. isn't he?

  688. You see,

  689. in Luke's gospel,

  690. Luke's account

  691. of the death

  692. of Christ

  693. is different

  694. from all the other gospels.

  695. In fact,

  696. each gospel

  697. has its own emphasis.

  698. And Luke pulls out

  699. things that the other

  700. writers don't pull out.

  701. And so,

  702. look at one or two

  703. of them with me.

  704. One of the things,

  705. in the build-up

  706. to the crucifixion,

  707. Luke makes the point

  708. that there is kind

  709. of demonic,

  710. satanic activity

  711. that's kind of

  712. brooding around here.

  713. Three times

  714. in Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  715. Jesus references

  716. Satan,

  717. or Luke references

  718. the work of Satan.

  719. Look at verse 3.

  720. He says,

  721. Satan entered Judas,

  722. called Iscariot,

  723. and he went

  724. and conferred

  725. with the chief priest

  726. how he might

  727. betray him.

  728. Verse 31,

  729. Jesus says,

  730. Simon, Simon,

  731. Satan has demanded

  732. to have you

  733. that he might

  734. sift you like weak,

  735. but I have prayed

  736. for you that your faith

  737. may not fail.

  738. And then when

  739. Jesus arrests

  740. in Gethsemane,

  741. he says,

  742. this is now the hour,

  743. the power of darkness.

  744. And there's the sense

  745. that the forces of evil

  746. are like a kettle

  747. of velchers.

  748. They're kind of circling

  749. or a pack of hyenas.

  750. They're smelling something

  751. and they're brooding,

  752. they're moving in.

  753. There's evil

  754. that's brooding

  755. around the scene here,

  756. right?

  757. But there's something else

  758. Luke also says

  759. in his Passion account.

  760. Luke makes the point

  761. of the innocence of Jesus.

  762. The innocence of Jesus.

  763. Three times during

  764. the trial of Jesus,

  765. Pontius Pilate says,

  766. I find no guilt

  767. in this man.

  768. There's nothing in here

  769. that makes him

  770. worthy of dying.

  771. And Pilate sends

  772. him away to Herod

  773. and Herod sends him back

  774. saying,

  775. I can find no guilt

  776. in him worthy of death.

  777. Even, I mean,

  778. remember,

  779. Herod didn't really

  780. love Jesus, right?

  781. Herod wasn't a good man.

  782. But Herod says,

  783. there's nothing in him

  784. deserving of death.

  785. And then even while

  786. Jesus is dying

  787. on the cross,

  788. the centurions,

  789. the Roman soldiers

  790. whose job it is

  791. to make sure

  792. that he's dead

  793. and justice is served,

  794. the centurion says,

  795. surely this man

  796. was innocent.

  797. And Luke is building

  798. the case here

  799. that everybody

  800. who had eyes to see

  801. could see that

  802. this was a

  803. travesty of justice.

  804. Jesus was an

  805. innocent man

  806. that did not

  807. deserve to die.

  808. The authorities

  809. can tell,

  810. the centurions

  811. can tell,

  812. everybody knows

  813. Jesus was an

  814. innocent man.

  815. And you get the sense

  816. that for the disciples,

  817. part of their confusion,

  818. part of their despair,

  819. part of their hopelessness,

  820. is these two things

  821. coming together.

  822. The sense of

  823. this evil forces

  824. that are brooding

  825. and the injustice

  826. that's going on,

  827. it feels like,

  828. well, where is hope?

  829. Is there any hope

  830. in the world?

  831. When you've got

  832. these two things

  833. going on,

  834. the sense is that

  835. maybe Jesus

  836. was a victim

  837. of a terrible plot.

  838. That the forces

  839. of evil

  840. and the forces

  841. of hell

  842. and the injustice

  843. of man,

  844. these things

  845. destroyed Jesus.

  846. And Jesus

  847. was a victim

  848. of a travesty

  849. of justice.

  850. I wonder if that's

  851. what Luke's

  852. first readers

  853. were feeling.

  854. As they read

  855. at the end

  856. of chapter 23,

  857. they just think,

  858. what hope is there

  859. in the world?

  860. When you've got

  861. such evil in the world

  862. and such evil men

  863. doing these things,

  864. what hope is there

  865. for any of us?

  866. But friends,

  867. don't you see?

  868. Luke wants to tell us

  869. that is exactly

  870. not what is happening.

  871. Jesus' death

  872. on the cross

  873. was not the result

  874. of evil forces

  875. and not the result

  876. primarily of the

  877. injustice of man.

  878. This was the purpose

  879. and the plan

  880. of God.

  881. This was God's doing.

  882. This is what God

  883. had always planned

  884. would happen.

  885. The excruciating death

  886. of the Lord Jesus

  887. was not because

  888. of evil forces

  889. in the world,

  890. not the cowardness

  891. of Pontius Pilate,

  892. not the jealousy

  893. of the Jewish people,

  894. not the treachery

  895. of Judas Iscariot.

  896. In spite of all them,

  897. this was the

  898. predetermined plan

  899. and the purpose

  900. of the triune God,

  901. the sovereign God

  902. of Father,

  903. Son,

  904. and Spirit

  905. that He would send

  906. His Son into the world

  907. to die on the cross

  908. for the sins

  909. of all those

  910. who would believe in Him.

  911. to take upon Himself

  912. the sin of humanity

  913. and rise again

  914. on the third day

  915. as confirmation

  916. that His atonement

  917. offering was accepted.

  918. And that's why

  919. all three of these stories,

  920. all three panels,

  921. make the case

  922. that this is what

  923. was written about

  924. and spoken about

  925. hundreds of years before.

  926. If you've got your Bible,

  927. look at the first panel.

  928. Look at verse 5.

  929. The angels said to the woman,

  930. Why do you seek

  931. the living amongst the dead?

  932. He is not here.

  933. He has risen.

  934. Remember how He told you

  935. while He was still

  936. with you in Galilee,

  937. the Son of Man

  938. must be delivered

  939. into the hands

  940. of sinful men

  941. and be crucified

  942. on the third day.

  943. The angels tell the woman,

  944. Why are you surprised?

  945. Jesus said this

  946. was going to happen.

  947. Look at the second panel.

  948. Look at verse 25.

  949. Jesus said to them,

  950. Oh foolish ones,

  951. how slow of heart

  952. you are to believe

  953. all that the prophets

  954. have spoken.

  955. Was it not necessary

  956. that Christ should suffer

  957. and then enter into His glory?

  958. And beginning with Moses

  959. and the prophets,

  960. He interpreted to them

  961. all the scriptures

  962. the things concerning Himself.

  963. Look at the third panel,

  964. verse 44.

  965. Jesus said to the disciples,

  966. These are my words

  967. that I spoke to you

  968. while I was still with you,

  969. that everything written

  970. about me

  971. and the law

  972. and the prophets

  973. and the Psalms

  974. must be fulfilled.

  975. Then He opened their eyes

  976. to understand.

  977. And He said to them,

  978. It is written,

  979. the Christ will suffer

  980. and on the third day

  981. rise from the dead

  982. that the repentance

  983. for the forgiveness of sins

  984. should be proclaimed

  985. to all nations.

  986. Friends,

  987. this is what God's word

  988. said would always happen.

  989. This is what the entire

  990. Old Testament is about.

  991. This is what Isaiah said

  992. 700 years before

  993. that the suffering servant

  994. would give his life

  995. as an offering for sin,

  996. a guilt offering,

  997. and rise again

  998. and be vindicated

  999. and live forever.

1000. This is what Hosea the prophet

  1001. said 800 years before.

  1002. He said that God

  1003. would ransom His servant

1004. from the power of the grave,

  1005. redeem him from death.

1006. This is what King David

  1007. spoke about,

  1008. Israel's greatest king,

  1009. that he,

  1010. the sinless one,

  1011. would defeat death

  1012. and the grave

1013. and live at God's right hand

  1014. and experience the pleasure

1015. of God forever and ever.

  1016. Friends,

1017. this is what the whole Bible

  1018. is about

  1019. because this is what

  1020. Christianity is about.

  1021. It is written

  1022. that the Christ

  1023. will suffer

  1024. and rise again.

  1025. Why?

  1026. Verse 47,

  1027. so that the repentance

  1028. for the forgiveness

  1029. of sins

  1030. may be proclaimed

  1031. in His name

  1032. to all people.

  1033. Friends,

1034. this is what Easter is about.

1035. Jesus went to the cross,

  1036. suffered,

  1037. mocked,

  1038. beaten,

  1039. crucified,

  1040. killed,

  1041. rose again.

  1042. That repentance of sins,

1043. that hope in this life

1044. and in the world to come

  1045. can be proclaimed

  1046. for everyone.

  1047. Later in 1 Corinthians 15,

1048. if Christ has not been raised,

  1049. then our message,

  1050. the gospel,

  1051. the message of Christianity

  1052. is in vain.

1053. Then all of our faith

  1054. is in vain

1055. and we are still dead

  1056. in our sins.

  1057. If in Christ

  1058. we have hope

  1059. in this life only,

1060. we are of all people

  1061. most to be pitied.

  1062. But in fact,

  1063. Christ has been raised

  1064. from the dead

1065. and therein lies our hope.

  1066. Friends,

  1067. in verse 1 of Luke 24,

  1068. Luke writes this.

  1069. He says,

1070. Now it was the first day

  1071. of the week.

  1072. Friends,

  1073. but don't you see,

1074. it wasn't just the first day

  1075. of the week.

1076. It was the first day

1077. of a whole new world,

1078. a world in which hope

  1079. was being restored,

  1080. in which death

  1081. and despair

  1082. and hopelessness

  1083. and fear

  1084. was passing away.

  1085. Now,

  1086. what does this mean

  1087. for us today?

1088. How does this help us today?

  1089. Well,

1090. look at these three stories

  1091. once again

1092. and what do you notice

1093. about the people in them?

  1094. What happens

  1095. to the people?

1096. In all three of them,

1097. they undergo a profound change,

  1098. don't they?

1099. And look at how Luke

  1100. describes them

  1101. before they encounter

  1102. the risen Jesus.

  1103. In verse 4,

  1104. they are perplexed

  1105. and confused.

  1106. In verse 5,

  1107. they are frightened

  1108. and alarmed.

  1109. In verse 11,

  1110. they are cynical

  1111. and disbelieving.

  1112. In verse 17,

  1113. they are downcast

  1114. and sad.

  1115. In verse 21,

  1116. they are despondent

  1117. and confused.

  1118. In verse 38,

  1119. they are troubled,

  1120. doubtful,

  1121. and fearful.

  1122. Here are a group

1123. of people you could say

  1124. they are not flourishing.

  1125. They are experiencing

  1126. deep mental ill health,

  1127. emotional ill health.

  1128. And yet,

  1129. each one of them

  1130. go through

  1131. a profound transformation.

1132. Look at how it ends.

  1133. Look at verse 52.

  1134. And they worshipped him

  1135. and returned to Jerusalem

  1136. with great joy

  1137. and were continually

  1138. in the temple

  1139. praising God.

  1140. Here are confused,

  1141. despondent,

  1142. troubled men and women

  1143. who are so deeply

  1144. and powerfully transformed.

  1145. They are barely recognizable.

  1146. And this wasn't just

  1147. a momentary transformation.

1148. As you read the book of Acts,

1149. Luke's sequel to his gospel,

  1150. you discover

1151. this is a deep transformation

  1152. that goes on.

  1153. Many of them

1154. will go to their graves

  1155. like this.

  1156. Do you remember

  1157. what the religious leaders

  1158. say about these disciples

  1159. in Acts chapter 4?

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1160. They are joyful.

  1161. They are threatened.

  1162. They'll say,

1163. if you don't shut up,

1164. we're going to kill you.

  1165. And they say,

  1166. okay, fine.

1167. We'll just keep on preaching.

  1168. And they say,

  1169. they recognized

  1170. these as uneducated men

1171. that had been with Jesus.

  1172. Friends,

  1173. they encountered

  1174. the risen Lord

  1175. and that changed them.

1176. What accounts for this change

1177. that takes place in them?

  1178. They had encountered

  1179. the risen Christ

1180. and suddenly it all makes sense.

  1181. Jesus' death

  1182. wasn't an accident.

  1183. this was God's plan

  1184. to rescue humanity

  1185. from the dire

  1186. and hopeless situation

1187. from which we could not

  1188. save ourselves.

  1189. Only a risen Christ

  1190. who conquered the grave

  1191. can defeat the tyranny

  1192. of death,

  1193. Satan,

  1194. and hell.

  1195. Only a risen Christ

  1196. could bring about

  1197. the promised new hope,

  1198. the new world,

  1199. the new creation

  1200. the prophets

  1201. had spoken about

  1202. and longed for.

  1203. Friends,

1204. in seeing the risen Christ,

  1205. they understand

  1206. that Jesus is God

  1207. who is sovereign

  1208. and majestic

  1209. and worthy of worship

1210. and the one who gives hope

  1211. to the hopeless.

  1212. Now, friends,

  1213. what does this mean

  1214. for you and I?

  1215. Well,

1216. I hope you can see

  1217. Luke is not just

  1218. telling us something.

  1219. Luke is asking us

  1220. a question.

  1221. In fact,

  1222. he's asking us

  1223. two questions.

  1224. Luke is asking us

  1225. two very important questions

1226. and I want you to think

  1227. about these questions.

1228. The first one is this.

  1229. Luke is asking,

  1230. based on the evidence

  1231. of your life,

  1232. looking at your hope,

  1233. your joy,

  1234. your certainty,

  1235. your conviction,

  1236. your worship,

1237. what does that tell you

  1238. about your belief

  1239. in the risen Christ?

  1240. Friends,

  1241. have you encountered

  1242. the living Lord Jesus?

  1243. Do you really believe

1244. in the risen Lord Jesus?

  1245. Now,

  1246. you may say,

  1247. yes,

  1248. of course I believe.

  1249. I've always believed.

1250. I was baptized as an infant.

1251. I've believed all my life.

  1252. But do you really?

  1253. How would you know

1254. if your belief is genuine

  1255. or just wishful thinking?

  1256. How would you know

1257. if your faith is genuine

  1258. saving faith

  1259. or just religious superstition?

  1260. Cultural Christianity?

  1261. Just religious wishful thinking?

  1262. Friends,

1263. can you see what Luke

  1264. is saying here?

  1265. Those who encounter

1266. the risen Lord Jesus Christ,

  1267. their lives are different.

  1268. Their hope is different.

  1269. Their joy is different.

  1270. Their purpose is different.

  1271. Their disposition is different.

  1272. Their entire ambition

  1273. and character is different.

  1274. Remember,

  1275. Luke is a physician.

  1276. He's a doctor here.

  1277. Like a good doctor,

  1278. he's examining us.

  1279. He's probing.

  1280. He's pressing.

  1281. He's examining the condition

  1282. of our faith

1283. and he's asking the question,

1284. you say you have faith

  1285. in the risen Lord,

  1286. where's the evidence?

  1287. Where's the changed life?

  1288. When risen Christ

  1289. comes into our lives,

1290. he does not leave us the same.

  1291. Here's the second question

1292. Luke wants to ask us.

  1293. If what the scriptures

1294. said about the coming Messiah,

  1295. about his death

  1296. and his resurrection

  1297. proved true,

  1298. what are you doing

  1299. about the rest

  1300. of the scriptures?

  1301. You see,

  1302. the Bible

  1303. in its entirety

  1304. and its totality

  1305. is God's word.

  1306. Jesus said

  1307. the scriptures

  1308. cannot be broken.

  1309. It's not just that

  1310. one or two pages

  1311. proved true.

  1312. Every single page,

  1313. every promise

  1314. of scripture

  1315. from thousands

  1316. of years ago

  1317. right through today

  1318. is proved true.

1319. And if what Jesus said,

  1320. if the scriptures said

  1321. about Jesus' death

  1322. and resurrection

  1323. on the third day

  1324. proved true

  1325. against everybody's

  1326. expectation,

  1327. friends,

  1328. what it means

  1329. is that everything else

  1330. from the scriptures

  1331. is true.

1332. And so what are you

  1333. doing about it?

  1334. What are you doing

  1335. with the parts

  1336. that speak about

  1337. his atoning sacrifice,

1338. the fact that he died

  1339. in your place

  1340. as a guilt offering

  1341. for your sin

  1342. that you might be

  1343. cleansed and justified

  1344. and made new?

  1345. Friends,

  1346. what are you doing

  1347. with the scriptures

  1348. that speaks about

  1349. your need for faith

  1350. and repentance?

  1351. What are you doing

  1352. with the scriptures

  1353. that say that Jesus

  1354. is Lord over all

  1355. and has authority

  1356. over every human being?

  1357. What are you doing

  1358. with the scriptures

  1359. that speak about

  1360. his imminent return

  1361. to judge the living

  1362. and the dead?

  1363. You see,

  1364. if Jesus proved

  1365. the scriptures

  1366. foretelling his death

  1367. and resurrection are true,

  1368. it means everything

  1369. is true.

  1370. Well, friends,

  1371. you may say,

  1372. well, okay,

  1373. that's good,

  1374. but how does that

1375. help me with my job

  1376. this week?

  1377. How does that help

  1378. me find a job

1379. or with my aging parents

  1380. or find a spouse

  1381. or the difficulties

  1382. in life?

  1383. Friends,

  1384. not everything in life

  1385. will be solved

  1386. in this world.

  1387. Jesus never promised us

  1388. that follow him

  1389. and everything

  1390. will go your way.

  1391. In fact,

  1392. Jesus said

  1393. that in this world

  1394. you will have trouble,

  1395. you will have difficulty,

  1396. you will have hardship

  1397. and tears and pain,

  1398. but take heart,

1399. I have overcome the world.

1400. And how do you know

  1401. that's true?

  1402. Because he overcame

  1403. the grave.

  1404. And so, friends,

  1405. when work is hard

  1406. and difficult

1407. and you feel all alone,

  1408. take heart,

  1409. Jesus has overcome.

  1410. And, friends,

  1411. when your parents

  1412. are old and aging

  1413. and getting sick

  1414. and it's hard

1415. to take care for them

  1416. and you feel exhausted

  1417. and worn down,

  1418. take heart,

  1419. Jesus has overcome.

  1420. And, friends,

  1421. when work is hard

  1422. and money is tight

  1423. and parenting is difficulty

  1424. and you've come

1425. to the end of yourself,

  1426. take heart,

  1427. Jesus has overcome.

  1428. Friends,

  1429. the grave is empty,

  1430. the resurrection is true,

  1431. new hope abounds.

  1432. Friends,

  1433. what happens

  1434. if on your deathbed

  1435. one day

  1436. someone told you

  1437. that you had tens

  1438. of millions of dollars

  1439. that was just waiting

  1440. for you

1441. and you never appropriated it,

1442. never took hold of it,

  1443. never used it,

1444. what a pity that would be.

  1445. But, friends,

  1446. what happens

  1447. if one day

1448. the risen Lord Jesus Christ

1449. looks you in the eye

  1450. and he says,

  1451. I died and I rose again

1452. to give you new hope,

  1453. new life,

  1454. new joy

  1455. in this world

  1456. and forever

1457. and you never took hold of it,

  1458. never appropriated it,

1459. never made it your own,

1460. that would be a disaster.

1461. And so as we come to a close,

  1462. let me remind you

  1463. of the words

1464. we sang a little earlier.

  1465. Though the sun

  1466. had ceased its shining,

  1467. though the war

  1468. appeared as lost,

  1469. Christ has triumphed

  1470. over evil,

  1471. it was finished

  1472. upon the cross.

  1473. Death was once

  1474. our great opponent,

1475. fear once had a hold

  1476. of me

  1477. and of you.

  1478. But the sun

  1479. who died

  1480. to save us

  1481. rose that we

  1482. would be free indeed.

  1483. Yes,

  1484. he rose

  1485. that we

  1486. would be free indeed.

  1487. Let's pray together.

  1488. Lord Jesus,

  1489. we pray to you

  1490. because you are

  1491. not a philosophy,

  1492. you are not

  1493. an idea,

  1494. you are not

  1495. a concept,

  1496. you are alive.

  1497. And God,

  1498. seated in the throne

  1499. of heaven,

  1500. you hear our prayers.

  1501. You hear the smallest

  1502. prayers,

  1503. you hear the prayers

  1504. prayed with mixed

  1505. motives,

  1506. you hear even

  1507. the most insipid

  1508. and weakest

  1509. of prayers.

  1510. You come,

  1511. you respond

  1512. to our faith.

  1513. Jesus,

  1514. thank you for

  1515. conquering the grave.

  1516. Thank you for

  1517. rising again.

  1518. Thank you that

  1519. the first day

  1520. of the week

  1521. is also the first

  1522. day of a whole

  1523. new world,

  1524. a world in which

  1525. we get to

  1526. participate

  1527. simply through

  1528. faith and repentance.

  1529. Christ,

  1530. come and be alive

  1531. in our hearts,

  1532. we pray.

  1533. Come and make

  1534. yourself real to us.

  1535. Come and change

  1536. our lives.

  1537. God,

  1538. for those of us

  1539. that are weighed

  1540. down with despair

  1541. and despondency,

  1542. God,

  1543. come and open

  1544. the eyes of our

  1545. heart to see

  1546. the new hope

  1547. to which you've

  1548. given us.

  1549. In your great

  1550. and wonderful name

  1551. I pray.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.
