  1. Now, if you have a Bible, you might want to turn back to Luke chapter 23 on page 1060,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2. ! And we're going to think for a few moments about the reality that Jesus died as He has told us to show His own love to us.

  3. So, we're going to think about love for a few minutes.

  4. We recognize, I think, as people that we have a capacity to love.

  5. It is something that is basic.

  6. It is something that is universal.

  7. It cuts across all times and all cultures.

  8. As Christians, we very much believe that part of being made in the image of God is the ability to love,

  9. because God is love, the Bible tells us.

  10. I think we also recognize the centrality of love.

  11. If we think about it at the cultural level, it's so important to our stories and our songs and our movies.

  12. So many religious and ethical movements are built around love for a particular idea or a particular set of values.

  13. And think about just how central love is for ourselves, to the desires deep down within us, to love and to be loved.

  14. At the same time, I think it's fair to say that there is some confusion about love.

  15. Sometimes it's one of those words we hear so often, but it can be hard to define.

  16. Maybe partly because we've emptied it of meaning.

  17. We apply it across the board.

  18. So, you know, we might love our job or our car.

  19. We might love our coffee or a nice cafe.

  20. But we also love our family and we love our God.

  21. So, what do we mean when we talk about love?

  22. And when we have conversations and when we're moving around, we recognize that not everybody shares the same understanding of what love is.

  23. For many people, to hear the word love is to think of a mere emotion.

  24. It's just about a feeling.

  25. It's about how I feel about someone or something.

  26. We talk about falling in love and falling out of love.

  27. And I'm sure I'm not the only person to recognize the problem that comes with that.

  28. If the feeling goes, often so the relationship goes and the commitment goes.

  29. And when we lose our sense of love as a verb, as an active thing,

  30. then we have the pain of broken marriages and families, a lack of trust and security.

  31. So, there's confusion about love.

  32. But something that we can all agree on, I think,

  33. and this would be true, I think, if we went into the streets of Edinburgh today

  34. and to ask people what they thought about costly love,

  35. it's recognized as a positive thing.

  36. Take as an example, if we were to go to the Belfast Titanic Museum,

  37. or if you know anything about the Titanic,

  38. if you've listened to any of the podcasts, if you've read up on it,

  39. then you will probably know something of the story of the engineers on the Titanic.

  40. So, when it became apparent that the ship was going down,

  41. they didn't leave their posts.

  42. They continued for as long as possible to keep the engines running,

  43. to keep the lights on,

  44. to allow the people on the upper decks as much chance as possible

  45. to escape and to find a life raft.

  46. The engineers went down with the ship.

  47. But you won't hear anyone saying of them,

  48. well, what a waste, what a foolish action.

  49. Rather, even over a century on, it's still regarded as a heroic act.

  50. We understand that sacrifice is good,

  51. that it's noble.

  52. So, when Jesus says,

  53. greater love has no one than this,

  54. to lay down one's life for one's friends,

  55. that resonates.

  56. We agree with that.

  57. And remarkably, with Jesus,

  58. that's not just a nice philosophical idea.

  59. That's an easy thing to say, perhaps.

  60. Jesus says it,

  61. and Jesus shows it.

  62. Jesus practices what he preached.

  63. So, we're going to think this evening about what Jesus says about love

  64. and how he shows that love.

  65. We're going to think about Good Friday,

  66. and just for a few moments together,

  67. to give thanks for the goodness of Jesus' love,

  68. to recognize that it was a costly,

  69. self-giving, sacrificing everything love

  70. for his own people.

  71. Or we could put it another way,

  72. a love so powerful that it would turn enemies into friends.

  73. And we're going to think about why we call this day Good Friday.

  74. It is good for all who look upon the cross of Jesus

  75. as the supreme demonstration

  76. of Jesus' own love for us.

  77. It is a good day with good news

  78. for all who receive Jesus

  79. and his saving death

  80. as our supreme treasure.

  81. So, what we're going to do,

  82. just really briefly,

  83. is we're going to take a look at the events

  84. that we've heard Luke record,

  85. and we're going to ask,

  86. how do we experience that love for ourselves?

  87. So that we might together recognize

  88. with the Apostle Paul

  89. that the message of Jesus' death

  90. matters only when it becomes

  91. personal testimony in our lives.

  92. that all of us might say with Paul

  93. in Galatians 2,

  94. the Son of God loved me

  95. and gave himself

  96. for me.

  97. So let's turn first of all to the events

  98. and to ask ourselves,

  99. how does Luke's record

  100. help us to see Jesus' love?

  101. So we're saying that his death on the cross

  102. is the ultimate demonstration of his love,

  103. but Luke has so helpfully recorded for us

  104. the hours leading up to his death.

  105. And some of those events,

  106. they really serve to magnify

  107. the love of Jesus

  108. as we see

  109. that his movement towards the cross

  110. is deliberate.

  111. That the love he is going to put on display

  112. is costly and gracious

  113. and life-transforming.

  114. So if you have a Bible,

  115. you can scan these verses with me.

  116. In Luke chapter 22 and verse 39,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  117. we were told

  118. that Jesus went out as usual

  119. to the Mount of Olives.

  120. Now that's a significant truth

  121. because Judas, the betrayer,

  122. knows exactly where Jesus is going to be.

  123. And so we're told

  124. that Jesus will not avoid arrest,

  125. but he goes

  126. as was the plan.

  127. Jesus is willing

  128. to embrace the cross

  129. to show us the love of God.

  130. We move further

  131. to verse 42

  132. and we hear Jesus pray

  133. and recognize Dr. Luke tells us

  134. the agony that Jesus faces.

  135. His face dropping sweats of blood

  136. as he prays,

  137. Father,

  138. if you are willing,

  139. take this cup from me,

  140. yet not my will,

  141. but yours be done.

  142. Jesus faces up

  143. to drinking the cup,

  144. this image of the Father's wrath,

  145. the wrath of God

  146. against sin,

  147. against sinners.

  148. Jesus will stand

  149. in the place of sinners

  150. and will take that cup

  151. and he knows

  152. the horror and agony

  153. he will experience

  154. and yet he commits,

  155. doesn't he,

  156. to the Father's will.

  157. And so we see

  158. the love of Christ Jesus

  159. that sees him

  160. drink the cup

  161. that you and I

  162. ought to drink.

  163. The story continues

  164. as Jesus is arrested.

  165. From verse 48 to 53,

  166. we discover

  167. that as Judas

  168. and a host of men

  169. armed come to him,

  170. Jesus goes

  171. with the betrayer.

  172. Jesus doesn't fight arrest.

  173. He could.

  174. He could call down

  175. legions of angels.

  176. But as prophesied

  177. in love,

  178. Jesus walks silent

  179. before his accusers.

  180. And then in chapter 23,

  181. as Jesus is walking

  182. to the cross,

  183. by now he has endured

  184. the injustices

  185. of false arrest

  186. and false trial.

  187. He has been abused.

  188. He has been beaten.

  189. He's experiencing

  190. public mockery.

  191. Mockery.

  192. His body is weakening

  193. due to blood loss

  194. because of beatings.

  195. And still,

  196. he looks outside

  197. of himself

  198. to see those women.

  199. Daughters of Jerusalem,

  200. do not weep for me.

  201. Weep for yourselves

  202. and for your children.

  203. Jesus understands

  204. judgment that will come,

  205. persecution that will face

  206. his own followers.

  207. And Jesus' love,

  208. even walking to the cross,

  209. is selfless,

  210. concerned for the good

  211. of others.

  212. Verse 34,

  213. Jesus is now

  214. hanging,

  215. nailed to the cross.

  216. And as he is

  217. taking to that place

  218. of execution,

  219. Jesus said,

  220. Father,

  221. Father,

  222. forgive them,

  223. for they do not know

  224. what they are doing.

  225. When the soldiers

  226. treat him

  227. as a common criminal,

  228. as they gamble

  229. at the foot of the cross

  230. for his clothing,

  231. Jesus prays

  232. to seek their forgiveness

  233. because he knows

  234. they do not know

  235. his true identity.

  236. But in this prayer,

  237. aren't we being brought

  238. to see something

  239. of the effect

  240. that Jesus' love

  241. produces

  242. in his going

  243. to the cross

  244. to die?

  245. There is in him

  246. forgiveness.

  247. And then in chapter 23,

  248. and from verse 40 onwards,

  249. we have that remarkable story

  250. of the dying criminal

  251. who recognizes

  252. something unique

  253. about Jesus.

  254. Don't you fear God,

  255. he says to the other criminals,

  256. since you are under

  257. the same sentence,

  258. we are punished justly,

  259. but this man

  260. has done nothing wrong.

  261. And not only that,

  262. he turns to Jesus.

  263. Jesus, remember me

  264. when you come

  265. into your kingdom.

  266. He is dying

  267. in apparent shame,

  268. but this criminal

  269. is able to see

  270. the king

  271. with eternal glory.

  272. And in that moment,

  273. Jesus' love

  274. extends

  275. grace

  276. to the undeserving

  277. who looks to him

  278. with faith.

  279. Jesus says,

  280. today,

  281. you will be with me

  282. in paradise.

  283. And even as Jesus dies,

  284. we're reminded of his love,

  285. his love for his father

  286. and the father's love for him.

  287. Jesus called out

  288. with a loud voice,

  289. Father,

  290. into your hands,

  291. I commit my spirit.

  292. and we are reminded

  293. of the eternal love of God

  294. that established

  295. this eternal plan

  296. of salvation

  297. that culminates

  298. with Jesus,

  299. the Son of God,

  300. dying in our place,

  301. offering us

  302. an overflowing love

  303. that we can be brought into.

  304. So,

  305. as Luke records

  306. the historical events,

  307. he is at the same time

  308. shining a spotlight

  309. on the cross

  310. as the great demonstration

  311. of Jesus'

  312. self-giving love.

  313. Well,

  314. if those are the events,

  315. we need to turn,

  316. secondly,

  317. to think about

  318. our experience

  319. of them,

  320. or more particularly,

  321. how can you and I

  322. know

  323. this love of Christ

  324. for ourselves?

  325. You and I,

  326. we know the feeling

  327. when we read

  328. about those

  329. titanic engineers,

  330. or when we hear

  331. the news reports

  332. of a parent

  333. who sacrifices

  334. themselves

  335. to save a child,

  336. or we hear

  337. of soldiers

  338. acting with great

  339. courage under fire

  340. to protect soldiers

  341. or civilians

  342. at the cost

  343. of their lives.

  344. We admire them.

  345. We honour them.

  346. We recognise

  347. their goodness.

  348. But it's a story

  349. that remains

  350. outside of us.

  351. It doesn't impact us

  352. beyond that,

  353. perhaps,

  354. temporary emotional

  355. response.

  356. With a cross,

  357. it's different,

  358. and it needs to be

  359. different.

  360. The cross of Christ

  361. is unique.

  362. This supreme

  363. demonstration of

  364. Jesus'

  365. self-giving love,

  366. though it happened

  367. in history

  368. some 2,000 years ago,

  369. it's a story

  370. of the love of God

  371. that can become

  372. a vital part

  373. of each of our stories,

  374. and indeed,

  375. it must become

  376. a part of our story.

  377. This love

  378. that Jesus

  379. puts on display

  380. is a love

  381. that must be received

  382. personally.

  383. It's not enough,

  384. because lots of people

  385. admire it from a distance,

  386. but that's not enough.

  387. We must embrace it

  388. and enter

  389. into it.

  390. Let's just remind

  391. ourselves

  392. for a moment,

  393. why does God say

  394. we need this love?

  395. Why does He put this love

  396. on display

  397. that Good Friday?

  398. Let's make it personal.

  399. It's because of my sin.

  400. It's because of your sin.

  401. That sin that separates me

  402. from God.

  403. That sin that robs

  404. Christ Jesus

  405. of His glory

  406. and the worship

  407. that He deserves.

  408. As the hymn writer

  409. put it,

  410. it was my sin

  411. that held Him there

  412. until it was accomplished.

  413. His dying breath

  414. has brought me life.

  415. I know

  416. that it is finished.

  417. It's my sin.

  418. It's my guilt.

  419. It's your guilt

  420. that needs to be

  421. atoned for.

  422. It's the wrath of God

  423. that must be satisfied

  424. for my wrongdoing.

  425. As the hymn writer

  426. puts it,

  427. Jesus paid it all.

  428. All to Him I owe.

  429. Sin had left

  430. its crimson stain.

  431. Christ washed me

  432. white as snow.

  433. We need this love

  434. when we come to recognize

  435. that without Jesus' death

  436. on our behalf.

  437. We have no righteousness

  438. to claim.

  439. We have no appeal

  440. to God's justice.

  441. Rather,

  442. we stand in desperate need

  443. of His mercy.

  444. And as we recognize that,

  445. we hear the good news for us

  446. of God's love for us in Christ.

  447. We hear Jesus say,

  448. the Son of Man came

  449. to give His life

  450. as a ransom for many.

  451. We hear Him say,

  452. greater love has no one

  453. than this,

  454. that He lay down His life

  455. for His friends.

  456. Or we turn to

  457. words of Paul

  458. in Ephesians 5,

  459. and we're reminded

  460. that Christ loved the church

  461. and gave Himself up

  462. for her.

  463. And that begs the question,

  464. am I among the many?

  465. Can I belong to the church?

  466. Can I become

  467. a friend of God?

  468. The cross of Christ

  469. is something that must

  470. become profoundly personal

  471. for each one of us.

  472. And as we ask those questions,

  473. the answer comes

  474. in God's Word

  475. again and again.

  476. Believe in the Lord Jesus

  477. and you will be saved.

  478. The promise of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  479. to all who did receive Him,

  480. who believe in His name,

  481. He gave the right

  482. to become children of God.

  483. Romans 10, 13,

  484. everyone who calls

  485. on the name of the Lord

  486. will be saved.

  487. At the cross,

  488. we are led to recognize

  489. that Jesus paid

  490. the highest price possible

  491. to give you and I

  492. the greatest gift possible

  493. by demonstrating

  494. His great love

  495. so that we can enjoy

  496. the glorious love of God

  497. for ourselves.

  498. To know that love,

  499. we need to call on Him.

  500. We need to believe in Him.

  501. And when we do,

  502. we become His friends.

  503. We become one of the many.

  504. We become part of the church.

  505. And we can say,

  506. the Son of God,

  507. He loved me.

  508. And He gave Himself

  509. for me.

  510. To help us think some more

  511. about the wonder of the cross,

  512. we're going to sing

  513. our closing hymn,

  514. which is when I survey

  515. the wondrous cross.

  516. And after we sing,

  517. well maybe stay standing

  518. and I'll close in prayer.

  519. Let's pray.

  520. Thank you.
