  1. We're going to read from Luke chapter 7, verses 36 to 50.

    Luke 7:36–50

  2. One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, asked Jesus to eat with him.

  3. And he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the table.

  4. And behold, a woman of the city who was a sinner,

  5. when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house,

  6. brought an alabaster flask of ointment.

  7. And standing behind him at his feet, weeping,

  8. she began to wet his feet with her tears

  9. and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet

  10. and anointed them with ointment.

  11. Now when the Pharisees who had invited him,

  12. when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this,

  13. he said to himself, if this man were a prophet,

  14. he would have known who and what sort of woman this is,

  15. who is touching him, for she is a sinner.

  16. And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you.

  17. And he answered, say it teacher.

  18. A certain moneylender had two debtors.

  19. One owed 500 denarii and the other 50.

  20. And when they could not pay, he canceled the debt of both.

  21. Now, which of them will love him more?

  22. Simon answered, the one I suppose for whom he canceled the larger debt.

  23. And he said to him, you have judged rightly.

  24. Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon,

  25. do you see this woman I entered your house?

  26. You gave me no water for my feet,

  27. but she has wet my feet with her tears

  28. and wiped them with her hair.

  29. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in,

  30. she has not ceased to kiss my feet.

  31. You did not anoint my head with oil,

  32. but she has anointed my feet with ointment.

  33. Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven,

  34. for she loved much.

  35. But he who is forgiven little loves little.

  36. And he said to her, your sins are forgiven.

  37. Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves,

  38. who is this who even forgives sins?

  39. And he said to the woman, your faith has saved you.

  40. Go in peace.

  41. This is God's holy word.

  42. We're going to read the story of the prodigal son from Luke chapter 15,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  43. starting in verse 11 of that chapter.

  44. And Jesus said,

  45. there was a man who had two sons,

  46. and the younger of them said to his father,

  47. father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.

  48. And he divided his property between them.

  49. Not many days later,

  50. the younger son gathered all he had

  51. and took a journey into a far country.

  52. And there he squandered his property and reckless living.

  53. And when he had spent everything,

  54. a severe famine arose in that country,

  55. and he began to be in need.

  56. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country,

  57. who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

  58. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate,

  59. and no one gave him anything.

  60. But when he came to himself,

  61. he said,

  62. how many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread?

  63. But I perish here with hunger.

  64. I will arise and go to my father,

  65. and I will say to him,

  66. father,

  67. I have sinned against heaven and before you.

  68. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.

  69. Treat me as one of your hired servants.

  70. And he arose and he came to his father.

  71. But while he was still a long way off,

  72. his father saw him and felt compassion

  73. and ran and embraced and kissed him.

  74. And the son said to him,

  75. father,

  76. I've sinned against heaven.

  77. And before you,

  78. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.

  79. But the father said to his servants,

  80. bring quickly the best robe and put it on him

  81. and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet

  82. and bring the fattened calf and kill it

  83. and let us eat and celebrate.

  84. For this son,

  85. for this my son was dead and is alive again.

  86. He was lost and is found.

  87. And they began to celebrate.

  88. Now his older son was in the field.

  89. And as he came and drew near to the house,

  90. he heard music and dancing.

  91. And he called one of the servants

  92. and asked what these things meant.

  93. And he said to him,

  94. your brother has come

  95. and your father has killed the fattened calf

  96. because he has received him back safe and sound.

  97. But he was angry and refused to go in.

  98. His father came out and entreated him.

  99. But he answered his father,

  100. look, these many years I've served you

  101. and I've never disobeyed your command.

  102. Yet you never gave me a young goat

  103. that I might celebrate with my friends.

  104. But when the son of yours came,

  105. who has devoured your property with prostitutes,

  106. you killed the fattened calf for him.

  107. And he said to him,

  108. son, you are always with me

  109. and all that is mine is yours.

  110. It was fitting to celebrate.

  111. And be glad for this brother,

  112. your brother was dead and is alive.

  113. He was lost and is found.

  114. This is God's holy word.

  115. Now, this is a very famous story,

  116. the prodigal son story.

  117. We today live in what the sociologists

  118. are calling a new cultural landscape.

  119. And that new cultural landscape

  120. is a movement from what was labeled post-modernism

  121. into what lots of people today

  122. called meta-modernism.

  123. Post-modernism was a movement

  124. that we've all lived through

  125. that was about doubting everything

  126. and questioning everything

  127. and deconstructing everything.

  128. And the meta-modern is one,

  129. so many things it is.

  130. And we're trying to understand

  131. this cultural landscape we live in.

  132. But the meta-modern is a return

  133. to some of the authorities

  134. that the post-modern world pushed away.

  135. So that's why so many people

  136. in our community,

  137. our society today,

  138. very different from a decade ago,

  139. are returning to religions.

  140. And it used to be even 10, 15, 20 years ago

  141. that religion was the bad guy in the culture.

  142. But today, religion is acceptable

  143. in the culture again.

  144. And it's not that people are merely

  145. turning to ancient authorities

  146. because of the question of truth.

  147. They're turning back to religions

  148. by way of aesthetic preference.

  149. It's an expression of the inner self,

  150. of personal desire,

  151. of just what you like.

  152. And so many of us will have heard

  153. of the quiet revival movement.

  154. The quiet revival has been

  155. sort of misunderstood.

  156. There is something of a revival,

  157. but it's not a Christian revival.

  158. Instead, it's a revival to transcendence.

  159. So it includes all the religions.

  160. People are returning to historic religions

  161. and so many new religions.

  162. And this is what some people

  163. have called meta-modernism,

  164. a little piece of it.

  165. Now that means today,

  166. most people in our culture,

  167. in our city,

  168. will say religion is a good thing again.

  169. It's helpful for cultural.

  170. It's helpful for societal cohesiveness.

  171. It's helpful for moral order and education.

  172. And it also means that

  173. because people are saying

  174. religion is good for you,

  175. the broad understanding of religion

  176. and the contemporary culture

  177. is not only that religion is good for you,

  178. but that religion is for good people.

  179. It's for making good people.

  180. Now, this is the most famous story

  181. Jesus ever told.

  182. And it is a surprise,

  183. the surprise in some sense

  184. of all of the gospels,

  185. because it says that Jesus came

  186. not to seek the religious,

  187. the good people,

  188. but the irreligious.

  189. That people,

  190. that Jesus came to turn

  191. what we think of as religion

  192. on its head.

  193. And the prodigal son story

  194. is a story that's probably

  195. well known to everybody in this room

  196. to some degree.

  197. It's a story,

  198. of course,

  199. we've taught here at St.

  200. C's on many occasions.

  201. The last time was,

  202. I think,

  203. a couple of years ago.

  204. But you can't really look

  205. at the prodigal son story enough.

  206. You could probably come

  207. and teach it every single week

  208. and it would still be fresh.

  209. And it says to us

  210. that the gospel

  211. entered the world

  212. to counter mere religion,

  213. that Jesus Christ came

  214. for those who know

  215. they have a need,

  216. for those that know

  217. they need grace.

  218. And it leaves the religious person

  219. at the end of the story

  220. standing on the outside

  221. being beckoned by Jesus.

  222. Will you come in

  223. seeing that you too

  224. are in need of grace?

  225. That despite your decency,

  226. that you're also in need

  227. of salvation and redemption.

  228. All right.

  229. So this story is often called,

  230. this parable is often called

  231. the prodigal son story.

  232. It's been misnamed.

  233. It should be the prodigal sons.

  234. It's about both sons.

  235. And to really understand it,

  236. you've got to see it that way.

  237. So we're going to be

  238. very brief tonight.

  239. And let's see simply first,

  240. who is this parable

  241. being spoken to?

  242. Then secondly,

  243. have a brief look

  244. at the younger son

  245. and then the elder brother.

  246. All right.

  247. So first,

  248. who is this parable

  249. being spoken to?

  250. Now to see that,

  251. you got to go to the beginning

  252. of chapter 15,

  253. verses one and two.

  254. And we read that

  255. the tax collectors

  256. and the sinners

  257. were all drawing near

  258. to hear Jesus.

  259. So Jesus is being surrounded

  260. by tax collectors

  261. and sinners

  262. and tax collectors

  263. and sinners

  264. are the two groups

  265. of people

  266. in the first century

  267. that the religious,

  268. the religious elite,

  269. the Pharisees despise most.

  270. The word sinner here

  271. is just another name

  272. for a person

  273. who's committed

  274. public sexual scandal.

  275. So probably a reference

  276. to prostitutes.

  277. And the tax collector,

  278. of course,

  279. Jewish men

  280. who have gone in

  281. with the Roman government

  282. to collect taxes

  283. from the Jews.

  284. And so these tax collectors

  285. and sinners,

  286. people who are hated

  287. by the religious elite

  288. are drawing near to Christ.

  289. And so in verse two,

  290. the Pharisees and scribes

  291. grumble saying,

  292. this man receives sinners

  293. and he eats with them.

  294. And so there's the Pharisees,

  295. the religious elite,

  296. the very decent people.

  297. They're so upset

  298. that these sinners,

  299. these public scandalous people

  300. have drawn near

  301. and Jesus has broken bread

  302. with them.

  303. He has eaten with them

  304. around the table.

  305. And then the next line is,

  306. so Jesus told this parable.

  307. And so it's a section

  308. of three parables,

  309. but all the parables

  310. are effectively

  311. about the same thing.

  312. Now, who is he writing

  313. the parable to?

  314. Who is he speaking

  315. the parable to?

  316. He tells the parable

  317. of the prodigal son,

  318. not to the prodigal sons

  319. and daughters,

  320. not to the sinners,

  321. not to the tax collectors.

  322. They are present

  323. all around them.

  324. They're drawing near to him.

  325. They want to be

  326. in his presence.

  327. He says this parable,

  328. not for their benefit,

  329. but for the religious elite,

  330. for the people

  331. who were there grumbling,

  332. believing that I should be accepted

  333. because I'm a decent person.

  334. And so he told

  335. the prodigal son story,

  336. not for the prodigals,

  337. but for the religious.

  338. That's who it was

  339. ultimately directed to.

  340. Now, secondly,

  341. that means that

  342. the main point

  343. is aimed

  344. not at

  345. not at prodigal sons

  346. and daughters

  347. who have been reckless,

  348. but at the respectable person.

  349. And so secondly,

  350. he's asking

  351. the respectable person

  352. to look first

  353. at the younger son.

  354. So the first half

  355. of the story

  356. is all about

  357. the younger son.

  358. You could think

  359. of the parable

  360. in two acts.

  361. It's a stage play

  362. effectively,

  363. and there are multiple scenes

  364. throughout these two acts.

  365. So act one,

  366. the prodigal son,

  367. the younger son,

  368. and in act one,

  369. scene one,

  370. we've got verse 12.

  371. And in verse 12,

  372. the younger son

  373. says to his father,

  374. father,

  375. father,

  376. give me the share

  377. of property

  378. that is coming to me.

  379. Now,

  380. this is a scandal.

  381. Every one of the scenes

  382. in the first act

  383. is a scandal.

  384. And the younger son

  385. comes to his father

  386. and he says,

  387. I want my inheritance.

  388. So if you're a younger son

  389. in the first century

  390. Greco-Roman Jewish context,

  391. you are owed

  392. one third

  393. of the family wealth.

  394. And so he's saying,

  395. I want my third.

  396. Now to say that

  397. to a father

  398. in an honor shame culture

  399. is to say to a father,

  400. I want you to be dead.

  401. I want you to die.

  402. I want my stuff.

  403. And the shock

  404. of the passage is

  405. the father does it.

  406. The father actually

  407. gives it to him.

  408. The father accepts this.

  409. And this isn't

  410. contemporary

  411. 21st century

  412. Western culture.

  413. There's no banks.

  414. The father would have

  415. had to liquidate

  416. in order to get the cash

  417. to give one third

  418. of his wealth

  419. to his son

  420. and he does it.

  421. Now,

  422. this is the shock

  423. of the passage.

  424. This,

  425. the shock of the passage

  426. is that the father

  427. would tear his life apart,

  428. would deconstruct his life

  429. to accommodate

  430. his son's rebellion.

  431. And this is,

  432. this is a tale

  433. as old as time.

  434. This is where

  435. true religion

  436. starts to begin.

  437. This is the oldest story

  438. in all of human history.

  439. It's from the beginning.

  440. From the beginning,

  441. humanity

  442. said to God,

  443. the father,

  444. father,

  445. I don't want you.

  446. I want your stuff.

  447. God made us

  448. and he gave us

  449. all sorts of gifts

  450. in this world

  451. and we turned around

  452. and said to him,

  453. I'm not interested in you.

  454. I just want the stuff

  455. you give to me.

  456. I just want my circumstances.

  457. And the shock

  458. of world history

  459. is that the father

  460. continues to provide

  461. for us.

  462. It's called common grace.

  463. He continues to give

  464. his gifts

  465. even though

  466. we take the gifts

  467. and shake our fist at him.

  468. Now,

  469. when you start to see

  470. that about yourself,

  471. that's where

  472. true religion

  473. starts to begin.

  474. That you and I

  475. are people

  476. who have taken

  477. the gifts of God

  478. and said to God,

  479. but I don't want

  480. the gift giver.

  481. And when you see that,

  482. if you're willing

  483. to admit that,

  484. you start to move

  485. on the path

  486. from mere religion,

  487. just being respectable,

  488. to true religion.

  489. You start to begin

  490. to say,

  491. there is someone

  492. to whom I must be grateful.

  493. There is a gift giver

  494. that I must offer

  495. my gratitude.

  496. That's the beginning

  497. of the pathway

  498. of true religion.

  499. And we're being told

  500. about it all

  501. in this story.

  502. Now,

  503. the second scene,

  504. verse 13 to 16,

  505. is this young man.

  506. He goes into

  507. the far country

  508. and it says

  509. that he was reckless.

  510. That's where we get

  511. the word prodigal

  512. in verses 13 and 14,

  513. reckless.

  514. He spends everything

  515. and he gets into

  516. such a destitute situation

  517. in the midst of

  518. famine that he starts

  519. working for a farmer,

  520. a pig farmer,

  521. and he becomes so poor

  522. that it says

  523. he desires even

  524. to eat the pods

  525. that the pigs

  526. were being fed.

  527. Now,

  528. remember,

  529. who is this parable

  530. being told to?

  531. It's being told

  532. to the Pharisees

  533. and the religious elite.

  534. And if you're

  535. a Jewish Pharisee

  536. in the first century,

  537. there is nothing

  538. that is more known

  539. to you than the fact

  540. that pigs are

  541. desperately unclean

  542. in the Levitical law.

  543. And that means

  544. we're being told here

  545. that this man

  546. has gone so far

  547. down into the pit

  548. that he has become

  549. less than the beasts

  550. because it says

  551. even he desires

  552. to eat the pods

  553. that the pigs were eating.

  554. He's not even

  555. to their level.

  556. The Pharisees

  557. are thinking

  558. this young boy

  559. has become beastly.

  560. There's no coming back

  561. from this

  562. in their culture.

  563. And yet,

  564. in verses 17 to 24,

  565. scene three,

  566. it says that

  567. the young man

  568. comes to himself

  569. and he says,

  570. I'm a sinner.

  571. I'll,

  572. he makes a plan.

  573. He says,

  574. I'll work it off.

  575. I'll come back

  576. to my father's household

  577. and I'll work for him

  578. as a hired hand,

  579. as a servant.

  580. And if I work long enough,

  581. if I put enough time in,

  582. I know I won't be a son,

  583. but maybe I could be

  584. accepted as a servant.

  585. And so that's his plan.

  586. Now,

  587. the religious crowd there

  588. would have been nodding.

  589. Absolutely.

  590. If anybody is to be reconciled,

  591. the only way

  592. that they could ever do it

  593. is by earning it back

  594. over years and years

  595. and years and years

  596. of repayment,

  597. of paying off

  598. every one of their sins,

  599. of earning their favor

  600. back in their father's house.

  601. And when this young man

  602. comes back

  603. to his father's house,

  604. he's got his plan ready.

  605. He's going to say,

  606. Father,

  607. I'll work for this many years.

  608. I'll do this,

  609. this many good works for you.

  610. And maybe then

  611. you'll call me servant again.

  612. And his father

  613. sees him out on the horizon.

  614. And breaking every rule

  615. of a patriarch

  616. in the household

  617. of the first century,

  618. he rolls his robes up

  619. and he runs out

  620. to his son.

  621. And before his son

  622. can say a word,

  623. he wraps his arms around him

  624. and kisses him on the neck.

  625. And he,

  626. you know,

  627. the son starts to give his plan.

  628. He starts to say,

  629. well,

  630. here's my plan,

  631. dad.

  632. I'm going to work for you

  633. and I'm going to earn

  634. your favor again.

  635. And it's as if in the text,

  636. the father just stops him

  637. and says to the other servants,

  638. go and kill the fattened calf.

  639. Get my best robe,

  640. my signet ring,

  641. my sandals,

  642. put them on his feet.

  643. Whose robe is the best robe

  644. in the house?

  645. It's the father's robe.

  646. Whose ring is the signet ring

  647. of the family?

  648. It's the father's ring.

  649. He,

  650. he,

  651. he robes him

  652. in his own clothing.

  653. He puts his family seal

  654. on his finger.

  655. And what we learn here

  656. is that

  657. you cannot earn your status

  658. as a son or daughter

  659. of the father.

  660. You cannot work your way

  661. into the father,

  662. the heavenly father's

  663. good graces.

  664. Becoming a son or daughter

  665. of the king,

  666. becoming a son or daughter

  667. of the father

  668. is a status change.

  669. It is acceptance.

  670. It is by,

  671. by grace alone.

  672. There's no other way.

  673. You cannot work your way

  674. into sonship.

  675. And so that means tonight

  676. that

  677. if you come tonight,

  678. some of you in this room

  679. are the prodigal sons

  680. and daughters,

  681. you are,

  682. you are the reckless

  683. spendthrift.

  684. You've,

  685. you've looked back

  686. at the past of your life

  687. and you say,

  688. I am the younger here.

  689. No matter what you've done,

  690. no matter what you're doing today,

  691. no matter what secret sins

  692. you may be hiding

  693. in your life right now,

  694. there is a heavenly father

  695. who is looking for you

  696. out on the horizon,

  697. longing to run to you

  698. and wrap his arms

  699. around you in mercy.

  700. And you can come to him

  701. and you can receive forgiveness.

  702. And you will be called son

  703. and you will be called daughter

  704. and you will be bathed

  705. in his robe

  706. and his signet ring

  707. and his sandals

  708. and he will throw a feast for you.

  709. Some of us tonight

  710. might be struggling

  711. as prodigal sons

  712. and daughters from the past.

  713. You might be wrestling

  714. and thinking,

  715. I don't,

  716. there's guilt in my life

  717. that I don't know

  718. that I'll ever get past.

  719. I just want to ask you

  720. one question

  721. and I'll move to the final thing.

  722. Do you think

  723. that Jesus Christ

  724. died on the cross

  725. in the middle of history

  726. for your heavenly father

  727. to look at you forever

  728. with a frown on his face?

  729. Jesus Christ died

  730. in the middle of history

  731. so that for the rest of time,

  732. God the father

  733. could smile at you.

  734. And so no matter

  735. what you've done,

  736. you can come tonight

  737. and you can receive his mercy.

  738. Now,

  739. it would be great to end.

  740. Let us pray.

  741. But we can't

  742. for just a few minutes

  743. because that's not

  744. where the parable ends.

  745. The story is so happy

  746. in this moment,

  747. but yet there's

  748. an elder brother

  749. and this is the main audience

  750. are the elder brothers

  751. and sisters,

  752. the religious elite,

  753. the people who believe

  754. they are respectable

  755. and they're decent

  756. and they can earn their way

  757. into God's favor.

  758. And so here we have

  759. an elder brother

  760. who comes back

  761. from the field

  762. and he hears the party going

  763. and he says,

  764. what's happening here

  765. in verses 28 and 29?

  766. And notice in verse 30

  767. how he even speaks

  768. to his father.

  769. He refers to his younger brother

  770. as this son of yours.

  771. He's not my brother.

  772. I don't know him.

  773. He won't say brother anymore.

  774. And then he explains himself.

  775. He says,

  776. all these years

  777. I have slaved for you.

  778. I've worked for you

  779. and you have never

  780. given me a party.

  781. You've never killed

  782. the fattened calf for me.

  783. Now,

  784. it's very clear

  785. how the elder brother,

  786. how the religious elite,

  787. how the respectable

  788. believes they earn God's favor.

  789. And it's this.

  790. He wanted the father's benefits.

  791. He wanted the father's benefits,

  792. his stuff.

  793. He never wanted the father.

  794. He said,

  795. all these years

  796. I've been good for you.

  797. I've been good to you

  798. and you've never

  799. thrown a party for me.

  800. He wanted everything

  801. the father would give him in life,

  802. all the inheritance.

  803. He never wanted the father

  804. and he wanted that inheritance

  805. by way of being good.

  806. He wanted to draw near

  807. to the father's stuff

  808. by way of his decency.

  809. And so the younger brother,

  810. the prodigal brother,

  811. he told the father outright.

  812. He was explicit about it.

  813. He said,

  814. I want you to die.

  815. I don't want you.

  816. I just want your stuff.

  817. The elder brother

  818. was implicit about it.

  819. He said,

  820. I don't want a relationship

  821. with you.

  822. I just am here being decent

  823. so that I can get your stuff.

  824. You see,

  825. you can be prodigal

  826. by way of spending your life

  827. in the most reckless living.

  828. You can be prodigal

  829. by being a very good person.

  830. You can stay far away from God

  831. by simply being decent.

  832. As long as you stay respectable,

  833. you can say,

  834. if you stay respectable,

  835. you can say,

  836. I never need to draw near

  837. confessing my need for grace.

  838. And so you can be

  839. just as prodigal

  840. on the outside,

  841. on the inside,

  842. I should say,

  843. as the younger brother

  844. is on the outside.

  845. You can be alienated

  846. from God by your sin

  847. and you can be

  848. just as alienated

  849. from God

  850. by your goodness.

  851. And so here,

  852. what we've got

  853. is salvation

  854. by morality

  855. in the elder brother's life.

  856. And if you,

  857. you're a person

  858. who approaches salvation

  859. as salvation

  860. by morality,

  861. you might be treating

  862. Jesus as a helper,

  863. as an example

  864. in your life,

  865. as an inspiration

  866. to be a good moral person,

  867. but he is not yet

  868. your savior.

  869. He's not yet

  870. your redeemer.

  871. And so at the very end

  872. of the story here,

  873. all we get

  874. is a pronouncement.

  875. It was fitting

  876. to celebrate

  877. and be glad

  878. for this,

  879. your brother was dead

  880. and is alive.

  881. He was lost

  882. and is found.

  883. The father says,

  884. look at the movement,

  885. the status change

  886. from death to life

  887. and your younger brother.

  888. And then the parable

  889. just stops.

  890. Why?

  891. The ending

  892. is left

  893. for the scribes

  894. and the Pharisees

  895. to put themselves into.

  896. There's the elder brother

  897. standing outside

  898. the door,

  899. the threshold

  900. of the party

  901. and Jesus turns

  902. to the Pharisees

  903. and the scribes

  904. and says,

  905. will you come in?

  906. And so he's inviting

  907. every one of us

  908. who believes

  909. in salvation

  910. by morality

  911. that our respectability

  912. and our decency

  913. is what's going

  914. to get us

  915. into the heavenly throne room

  916. instead of our confession

  917. of need,

  918. of grace.

  919. And he's just

  920. leaving it open

  921. and saying,

  922. will you come?

  923. Will you come

  924. and receive

  925. the open arms

  926. of the father as well?

  927. Will you confess your need?

  928. Now,

  929. let me finish with this.

  930. How do you come home

  931. to God?

  932. You come home to God

  933. by saying,

  934. therefore,

  935. I'm unworthy.

  936. I'm a sinner.

  937. No matter how respectable

  938. your life may have been,

  939. I need to be rescued

  940. just as much

  941. as the prodigal sons

  942. and daughters

  943. down the road.

  944. You come to the father

  945. by confessing your need.

  946. That's faith.

  947. That's clear

  948. in the passage.

  949. But,

  950. what's unclear

  951. is what some

  952. commentators

  953. talk about

  954. and that's this.

  955. If God

  956. is the heavenly father

  957. who no matter

  958. what you have done,

  959. whether that's salvation

  960. by decency

  961. and morality

  962. or that's running

  963. away from him

  964. and spending your life

  965. in utter recklessness,

  966. no matter what you've done,

  967. all you need to do

  968. is come back to him

  969. and he will open

  970. his arms to you

  971. and he will accept you.

  972. Is there any need

  973. for the cross

  974. of Jesus Christ?

  975. So,

  976. if God just forgives you,

  977. if he just brings you in,

  978. if he just accepts you

  979. no matter what,

  980. why in the world

  981. is there a cross

  982. at the end of the gospel?

  983. And here's what I think

  984. commentators miss

  985. when they suggest that,

  986. when they ask that question

  987. and it's this.

  988. Remember,

  989. he's talking to

  990. the Pharisees,

  991. the religious elite,

  992. the scribes,

  993. those who are grumbling

  994. at the tax collector

  995. and the sinner

  996. and what does he tell them?

  997. He doesn't tell them

  998. one parable

  999. but three parables.

  1000. Don't worry,

1001. I'm not going to teach

  1002. all three.

  1003. In the first parable,

  1004. there's a shepherd

  1005. and he loses

  1006. one sheep

  1007. and it says

  1008. that he goes out

  1009. into the far country

  1010. to bring that sheep

  1011. home again.

  1012. In the second parable,

  1013. there's a coin,

  1014. there's many coins

  1015. and this woman

  1016. loses one coin

1017. and she flips her house over

  1018. just to find

  1019. the one coin.

1020. She goes on the hunt,

1021. she goes on the search

1022. and in the third parable,

  1023. there's a son,

  1024. one of the sheep,

  1025. one of the coins,

1026. one of the little bits

1027. of treasure of the father

  1028. and he goes out

  1029. in the far country.

  1030. See,

  1031. in parable one,

  1032. the shepherd goes

  1033. and gets the sheep

  1034. and brings them back

  1035. and parable two,

  1036. the woman goes

  1037. and finds the coin

  1038. and brings it back

  1039. but in parable three,

  1040. what's missing?

  1041. See,

  1042. what would a true

  1043. elder brother have done?

  1044. A true,

  1045. a good,

  1046. a righteous elder brother

  1047. would have said,

  1048. Father,

  1049. I will go into

  1050. the far country

  1051. and I will go

  1052. and bring

  1053. my prodigal

  1054. little brother home again.

  1055. I will go get

  1056. into the muck

1057. of the pigs with him

  1058. if I have to

1059. in order to bring him home.

  1060. See,

  1061. that's

  1062. the real center

  1063. of the passage.

  1064. Do,

  1065. do you have

  1066. a true

  1067. and better

  1068. elder brother

  1069. than this

  1070. elder brother?

  1071. Yes,

  1072. you do.

  1073. Jesus Christ,

  1074. he is the true

  1075. and better

  1076. elder brother,

  1077. Jesus Christ,

  1078. the righteous

  1079. and he says

  1080. in Hebrews,

  1081. I am not ashamed

  1082. to call you

  1083. my brothers

  1084. and sisters.

  1085. Jesus Christ

  1086. went into

  1087. the far country

  1088. and got all

  1089. the way

  1090. into the muck

  1091. so that he

  1092. could bring you

  1093. home again

  1094. and the invitation

  1095. is before you,

  1096. will you come?

  1097. Will you come

  1098. and receive

  1099. the father's embrace?

  1100. Let's pray.

  1101. Father,

  1102. we ask that you

  1103. would give us

  1104. faith tonight.

  1105. We ask,

  1106. Lord,

  1107. that you would

  1108. help us to see

  1109. our need,

  1110. that we are not

  1111. saved by our morality,

  1112. nor are we

  1113. too far gone

  1114. because of our

  1115. recklessness.

  1116. And so,

  1117. we pray,

  1118. Lord,

  1119. whatever condition

1120. we may be in tonight,

  1121. that you would

  1122. teach us the grace

  1123. of your gospel,

  1124. all because we have

  1125. a true and better

  1126. elder brother.

  1127. And we pray

  1128. for this grace

  1129. to be received

  1130. in Christ's name.

  1131. Amen.

  1132. Amen.

  1133. Thank you.
