  1. Our second reading, it comes from the book of Romans, Paul's letter to the Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  2. ! It's on page 1132, and we're going to read the first 14 verses.

  3. We hear God's word together again.

  4. What shall we say then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means. We are those who have died to sin.

  5. How can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who are baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

  6. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

  7. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  8. For we know that our old self was crucified with him, so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with.

  9. That we should no longer be slaves to sin.

  10. Because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

  11. Now, if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  12. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again.

  13. Death no longer has mastery over him.

  14. Death no longer has mastery over him.

  15. As an instrument of righteousness.

  16. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

  17. Amen.

  18. This is God's word.

  19. So we're going to think this evening about freedom, and Christian freedom in particular.

  20. But I think it's fair to say at the beginning that the idea of Christian freedom can be confusing.

  21. Even when we come to Romans chapter 6, we find Paul in verse 1 having to defend himself against an accusation.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  22. If you preach a religion of grace, that will lead to sin and immorality.

  23. That was one of the charges against Paul.

  24. And so we need to understand that freedom is not the idea of a free pass.

  25. Jesus is not our get-out-of-jail-free card.

  26. But it is the freedom to live a whole new life as those who have been given a new heart, given new desires, given a new power that comes from God.

  27. So that can confuse.

  28. But for some, the confusion lies here that the whole idea of Christian freedom might sound and seem ridiculous.

  29. If your conception of Christianity makes it about rules and limitations and barriers to people having sort of joy and freedom, then it's going to come across as confusing.

  30. And again, freedom is not, Christian freedom is not, here's how to enjoy a life without any limits.

  31. That's not really freedom.

  32. This is a particular kind of freedom.

  33. Like when we have a piece of technology and we understand that that technology works best when we follow the maker's guidelines.

  34. You know, our mobile phones are excellent communication devices but not so good as a Frisbee.

  35. We understand that principle.

  36. Christian freedom is the freedom we find in following the guidelines of God, our maker.

  37. That's the way life works best.

  38. There's freedom in that.

  39. So we need to think about what are we being told about Christian freedom here in Romans 6.

  40. And it's interesting that all of this also involves Paul reflecting on the significance of the death and the resurrection of Jesus.

  41. So what is Christian freedom in light of Easter?

  42. What difference does it make?

  43. A few things to say.

  44. The first thing to say, and it's right here in the center of our text,

  45. we know freedom through union with Christ.

  46. There's an idea repeated twice.

  47. Verse 5,

  48. If we've been united with him in a death like his,

  49. we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  50. Phrasing a slightly different way in verse 8.

  51. Now if we died with Christ,

  52. we believe that we will also live with him.

  53. So that key idea is repeated.

  54. Now what does Paul mean?

  55. This idea of union,

  56. which is so important within the Bible.

  57. Well perhaps we can think about a proxy.

  58. When it comes to voting,

  59. if you're off on your holidays,

  60. you can elect a proxy to vote on your behalf.

  61. In history,

  62. it was possible even to have a proxy

  63. to represent you at your own marriage ceremony.

  64. I only discovered this this week,

  65. but there are a number of kings of the UK

  66. who were not present at their own wedding.

  67. King James VI and I.

  68. He was the first to do this.

  69. When he was getting married to Queen Anne of Denmark,

  70. he wasn't there.

  71. He sent George Keith,

  72. the fifth Earl Marshal,

  73. in his place.

  74. That's a very different set of wedding photos, isn't it?

  75. So there's the idea of a proxy that represents someone.

  76. Or think champion.

  77. Think about champion.

  78. So those occasions when two armies would come to war,

  79. and rather than the whole army be involved,

  80. there's the choice of a champion to represent either side.

  81. And whoever wins,

  82. wins for the whole army.

  83. We think David.

  84. We think Goliath.

  85. Now take that idea into what we mean by

  86. being united to Jesus by faith.

  87. He is our proxy.

  88. He represents us.

  89. He is the champion who wins a victory for us.

  90. And what is true for Jesus

  91. is true for those who have faith in Jesus.

  92. When it comes to death and resurrection,

  93. Christopher Ash puts it this way.

  94. Just as Jesus' death was once for all,

  95. and his resurrection irreversible,

  96. so it is for us in him.

  97. So we go back to Good Friday.

  98. Christ died for sin on the cross,

  99. and when we are united with him,

  100. we too die.

  101. Our old nature dies.

  102. We die to sin's enslaving power

  103. and the penalty that is due.

  104. And now we find ourselves here at Easter Sunday.

  105. Christ rose to new life and united with him.

  106. There is the promise that in the future,

  107. we too will enjoy physical bodily resurrection life

  108. in the new creation,

  109. and in the present,

  110. we enjoy new life with and in Jesus.

  111. Notice the certainty in verse 5 and verse 8.

  112. If we've been united with him in death,

  113. we will certainly also be united with him

  114. in our resurrection.

  115. If we died with Christ,

  116. we believe that we will live with him.

  117. One necessarily follows the other.

  118. There's no room for doubt.

  119. John Piper has a very helpful image, I think.

  120. He has this idea of the keys of death

  121. hanging on the inside of the tomb of Christ Jesus.

  122. Think about that giant stone,

  123. and there's the keys hanging on the inside of the tomb.

  124. To secure our resurrection from the dead,

  125. Christ must die for sin,

  126. Christ must enter the tomb,

  127. Christ must rise again

  128. and unlock the door of death from the inside.

  129. That's what Jesus did in the gospel.

  130. And in his resurrection,

  131. now we have proof,

  132. now we have the gift

  133. that Jesus' work is finished,

  134. and God accepted it.

  135. And so we have freedom.

  136. Think about that.

  137. If we are united to Christ Jesus,

  138. nothing can keep us in the tomb.

  139. We are free to live.

  140. We are free to live without the fear of death.

  141. We are free to live with the hope of heaven.

  142. And so there is this vital connection

  143. between Jesus' death and resurrection

  144. and how it affects our freedom.

  145. When we read our Bibles,

  146. when we read our own hearts,

  147. we know that we all sin.

  148. Lost sentences sinners to eternal death.

  149. When we read our Bibles,

  150. we learn about Jesus' life and death.

  151. And Jesus there meets the demands of the law in full,

  152. perfect obedience,

  153. and then a perfect substitute sacrificing for us.

  154. Jesus is punished for me.

  155. Jesus is perfect for me.

  156. And in those actions,

  157. sins are removed.

  158. The sting of sin,

  159. which is death,

  160. is removed.

  161. So now it's not eternal death

  162. that is our prospect,

  163. it's eternal life

  164. that now belongs to us.

  165. And this is what we mean

  166. when we talk about freedom with Christ,

  167. freedom in Christ,

  168. that one day,

  169. we have the sure hope

  170. that Jesus will return,

  171. and Jesus will make everything new,

  172. and Jesus will take his people to be with him,

  173. to live in that perfect new world forever.

  174. So we know freedom

  175. through union with Christ.

  176. There's a second idea to do with freedom in our text.

  177. We know freedom

  178. from the power of sin.

  179. And I think we see how related that is.

  180. There's a repeating theme in these verses.

  181. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus,

  182. first of all,

  183. sin is rendered powerless.

  184. Verse six,

  185. for we know that our old self

  186. was crucified with him

  187. so that the body ruled by sin

  188. might be done away with

  189. or might be rendered powerless.

  190. Sin's rule is broken,

  191. that we should no longer be slaves to sin

  192. because anyone who has died

  193. has been set free from sin.

  194. And then down in verse 12,

  195. sin's reign is ended.

  196. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body.

  197. Now how does this happen?

  198. Again, we see it in verse six.

  199. Our old self was crucified with him.

  200. This freedom from the power of sin

  201. comes because Jesus died on the cross

  202. as that sin-bearing substitute

  203. and the reality of our

  204. having been crucified with him.

  205. And that freedom from the power of sin,

  206. it also comes

  207. through the resurrection of Jesus.

  208. Verse seven,

  209. that he has died

  210. and then risen

  211. and we have died with him

  212. and now we're alive

  213. so we're set free

  214. from the power of sin

  215. in our lives.

  216. Our chains have been broken

  217. with him

  218. and in him

  219. and so the events of Easter

  220. bring to us

  221. real freedom

  222. so that we are able

  223. to sing of our sin.

  224. My chains are gone.

  225. I've been set free.

  226. My God, my Savior

  227. has ransomed me.

  228. There is this decisive moment

  229. that has taken place

  230. in our lives

  231. there at the cross

  232. and the resurrection.

  233. Now to help us picture this,

  234. we can go for a few moments

  235. to the Red Sea

  236. and to the story of the Exodus.

  237. Because when we read the Old Testament,

  238. we know that the Exodus event,

  239. the Red Sea,

  240. that was the defining moment

  241. for the Old Testament believer.

  242. This was the line in the sand.

  243. This was the before and after

  244. for the Old Testament believer.

  245. So there on the banks

  246. of the Red Sea

  247. on the far side of the sea,

  248. what were they celebrating?

  249. They were celebrating

  250. God delivering them

  251. from Egyptian slavery.

  252. They were celebrating

  253. the fact that they were now

  254. separated forever

  255. from that threat.

  256. They were celebrating

  257. the truth

  258. that they had a new identity,

  259. no longer slaves

  260. under the tyranny

  261. of Pharaoh.

  262. now they're set free

  263. to enjoy life

  264. with their God.

  265. Fast forward

  266. to our experience.

  267. The Easter events

  268. for us

  269. are the Christians

  270. defining moment.

  271. Here is the moment

  272. that we look back to

  273. where we can recognize

  274. as the Old Testament believer did,

  275. God is good.

  276. God is utterly committed

  277. to me and my salvation.

  278. I can trust this God.

  279. As Jesus said,

  280. if the Son sets us free,

  281. then we are free indeed.

  282. Now think about what that means

  283. for our day-to-day life.

  284. Perhaps we know what it is

  285. to feel enslaved.

  286. There are so many addictions

  287. that can catch us

  288. in their grip.

  289. Even as Christians,

  290. there are so many harmful

  291. habits and patterns

  292. we find ourselves

  293. constantly returning to.

  294. We can find ourselves

  295. a slave to our past,

  296. our failures,

  297. our regrets.

  298. Guilt is that prison

  299. that's locked

  300. from the inside.

  301. But at the same time,

  302. we can be slaves

  303. in the sense of having

  304. a great fear

  305. about our future.

  306. And there's great good news

  307. that in Jesus,

  308. there is freedom

  309. and we can change,

  310. that we don't need

  311. to be defined

  312. by those things

  313. because they are

  314. no longer our masters.

  315. We have a new freedom

  316. purchased for us

  317. through Jesus' death

  318. and resurrection.

  319. Not that we can ever say,

  320. well, I will never sin.

  321. You know,

  322. that we've broken free

  323. from the presence

  324. of sin in our lives.

  325. That will come,

  326. but not until we are glorified.

  327. But here's what we can say.

  328. Right now,

  329. or in a particular moment,

  330. I do not need to sin.

  331. We have,

  332. we have as Christians,

  333. a new power,

  334. a new desire,

  335. a new heart,

  336. a new spirit,

  337. a law written upon our hearts

  338. that gives us the ability

  339. to say no

  340. and to pursue righteousness

  341. and to delight in it.

  342. And it's important for us also

  343. to learn to look back

  344. as Christians,

  345. to recognize this,

  346. that between us

  347. and that sin

  348. that would love

  349. to enslave us

  350. stands

  351. not the Red Sea,

  352. but the cross of Christ.

  353. And so we understand

  354. in the gospel

  355. that yes,

  356. there are times

  357. when sin

  358. will tempt us

  359. and we will fail.

  360. Sin can never

  361. condemn the believer,

  362. can never kill

  363. the believer.

  364. So we know freedom

  365. from the power of sin.

  366. Look again

  367. at the death

  368. and resurrection

  369. of Jesus.

  370. Because in this

  371. there is freedom

  372. from anxiety

  373. and insecurity.

  374. If the Father

  375. from all eternity

  376. wasn't just willing

  377. but delighted

  378. to do that,

  379. to send his Son

  380. to come,

  381. to become one of us,

  382. to take our place,

  383. to take our penalty,

  384. to bear God's wrath,

  385. if he was willing

  386. to do that,

  387. what will he not do

  388. for you and me now?

  389. It's the logic

  390. of Romans 8,

  391. isn't it?

  392. Let me read,

  393. if you've got your Bible,

  394. you can flick over

  395. to Romans 8,

    Romans 8:31

  396. verse 31.

  397. What then

  398. shall we say

  399. in response

  400. to these things?

  401. If God

  402. is for us,

  403. who can be

  404. against us?

  405. He who did not

  406. spare his own Son

  407. but gave him up

  408. for us all,

  409. how will he not

  410. also along with him

  411. and graciously

  412. give us all things?

  413. Who will bring

  414. any charge

  415. against those

  416. whom God has chosen?

  417. It is God

  418. who justifies.

  419. Who then

  420. is the one

  421. who condemns?

  422. No one.

  423. Christ Jesus

  424. who died,

  425. more than that,

  426. who was raised to life,

  427. is at the right hand

  428. of God

  429. and is also

  430. interceding

  431. for us.

  432. Do you hear

  433. what Paul is saying?

  434. As Christians,

  435. we can believe

  436. and know

  437. Jesus died

  438. for me,

  439. Jesus rose

  440. for me,

  441. Jesus sits

  442. at the Father's

  443. right hand

  444. for me,

  445. and Jesus

  446. prays for me.

  447. God holds

  448. nothing back.

  449. And we can

  450. use Easter

  451. as that vital

  452. reminder,

  453. use those events

  454. to remind

  455. ourselves

  456. just how much

  457. love

  458. God has

  459. for us.

  460. The Puritan

  461. John Owen

  462. said this,

  463. challenging words

  464. I think,

  465. the greatest

  466. insult

  467. you could ever

  468. give to God

  469. after the cross

  470. would be

  471. to doubt

  472. God's love

  473. for you

  474. or his

  475. commitment

  476. to care

  477. for you.

  478. We need to

  479. see how

  480. those events

  481. of Easter

  482. can transform

  483. our sense

  484. of self

  485. and give us

  486. freedom

  487. from insecurity

  488. and anxiety

  489. and from the sin

  490. that would enslave

  491. us.

  492. We can let Easter

  493. be that reminder,

  494. see how much

  495. he loves us,

  496. that we would

  497. trust him

  498. and rest

  499. in his love.

  500. Here's a third

  501. way Paul puts

  502. this freedom

  503. in view.

  504. As we discover

  505. in this section

  506. we can know

  507. the freedom

  508. of a new

  509. identity.

  510. There is a sense

  511. I think in which

  512. creating a new

  513. identity is a

  514. pretty modern

  515. phenomenon.

  516. You know in the

  517. past,

  518. typically,

  519. people lived

  520. in the same

  521. place as their

  522. parents,

  523. often times

  524. took the same

  525. work as their

  526. parents,

  527. lived in the

  528. same community,

  529. shared the same

  530. cultural values,

  531. perhaps married

  532. within the

  533. community.

  534. Sometimes that

  535. might feel like

  536. a goldfish bowl

  537. but often that

  538. provided a sense

  539. of security.

  540. But now we live

  541. in a time when

  542. we can go

  543. anywhere,

  544. we can do

  545. anything,

  546. we can be

  547. anything that

  548. we want and

  549. that becomes a

  550. real pressure

  551. and a burden

  552. for some.

  553. How do I keep

  554. up with cultural

  555. trends and

  556. values?

  557. What happens

  558. if I'm sold

  559. this idea,

  560. I'm free to be

  561. whatever I want

  562. to be but I'm

  563. not matching up

  564. to my expectations

  565. and I don't seem

  566. to be getting

  567. there?

  568. It's not

  569. always freedom

  570. when we're

  571. told have it

  572. your own way,

  573. it doesn't

  574. just apply to

  575. burgers but it

  576. applies to all

  577. of life.

  578. There are many

  579. doctors, many

  580. psychologists

  581. identifying,

  582. it's not

  583. creating a

  584. joyful generation,

  585. it's creating an

  586. anxious generation,

  587. locked into a

  588. digital world,

  589. a whole new

  590. load of social

  591. pressures,

  592. lifestyle stressors

  593. that it can be

  594. really hard to

  595. escape from.

  596. And then we get

  597. this wonderful

  598. message from Paul

  599. and the Bible

  600. that there is a

  601. better freedom,

  602. there is a more

  603. secure and joyful

  604. identity to be

  605. found in knowing

  606. the risen Lord

  607. Jesus.

  608. And again I think

  609. for us as

  610. Christians our

  611. daily task and

  612. perhaps sometimes

  613. it's our daily

  614. struggle is to

  615. preach the gospel

  616. to ourselves,

  617. to understand that

  618. no one talks to

  619. us more than we

  620. do.

  621. How do we talk

  622. to ourselves about

  623. ourselves and more

  624. especially how do we

  625. talk to ourselves

  626. about our God and

  627. our Savior?

  628. Are we reminding

  629. ourselves of the

  630. reality of our

  631. union with Christ?

  632. Are we talking to

  633. ourselves about the

  634. life transforming

  635. impact of the

  636. cross and the

  637. resurrection?

  638. Because look at the

  639. language here in

  640. Romans 6 and verse

  641. 11.

  642. Romans 6 verse

    Romans 6:11

  643. 11, in this same

  644. way count yourselves

  645. or reckon

  646. yourselves dead to

  647. sin but alive to

  648. God in Christ

  649. Jesus.

  650. There's an

  651. accounting word.

  652. You'll take stock

  653. of what is in the

  654. bank right now.

  655. And it's the

  656. reality that if

  657. anyone is in

  658. Christ he is,

  659. present tense,

  660. a new creation.

  661. That idea of being

  662. transformed, of being

  663. a new creation, that's

  664. not a future label

  665. that will be placed

  666. on us, it is the

  667. present identity of

  668. the believer today.

  669. And so Paul here

  670. calls us to line up

  671. our thinking with

  672. God's truth about

  673. who we truly are.

  674. And so much of this

  675. passage is about the

  676. death of Jesus and the

  677. resurrection of Jesus

  678. and our union with

  679. Jesus so that every

  680. day we would be

  681. thinking about ourselves

  682. in light of Jesus'

  683. work.

  684. To be thinking about

  685. Jesus walking to the

  686. cross, carrying your

  687. sin, your punishment,

  688. so that your old

  689. nature is dead and

  690. buried.

  691. And then Jesus walking

  692. out of the tomb,

  693. carrying new life for

  694. you.

  695. We're given another

  696. picture to help us

  697. towards that new

  698. identity.

  699. It's the picture of

  700. baptism.

  701. It's there in verses

  702. three and four.

  703. Don't you know that

  704. all of us who are

  705. baptized into Christ

  706. Jesus were baptized

  707. into his death?

  708. We were therefore

  709. buried with him through

  710. baptism into death in

  711. order that, just as

  712. Christ was raised from

  713. the dead through the

  714. glory of the Father,

  715. we too may live a

  716. new life.

  717. Shortly after Jesus'

  718. resurrection and then

  719. his ascension, the

  720. Holy Spirit is sent.

  721. And when you read the

  722. book of Acts, we see

  723. that in those few weeks

  724. after Jesus died and

  725. rose and returned to

  726. heaven, we have a lot

  727. of the apostles

  728. preaching.

  729. Maybe we think of Acts

  730. chapter two.

  731. Here is Peter, he's

  732. preaching, and as he

  733. preaches about God's

  734. foreknowledge and the

  735. plan to send his son,

  736. that he would be

  737. rejected and would be

  738. killed but then be

  739. raised.

  740. People are cut to the

  741. heart.

  742. And people confess

  743. Jesus as Lord.

  744. And what's the sign

  745. that they are given

  746. as they confess Jesus

  747. as Lord?

  748. It's baptism.

  749. So baptism in the book

  750. of Acts is at least in

  751. part a way for someone

  752. to publicly say, I

  753. identify with Jesus as

  754. my Lord.

  755. What happened there on

  756. the cross happened for

  757. me.

  758. What happened at the

  759. empty tomb and the

  760. resurrection, that

  761. impacts me.

  762. baptism.

  763. And so every baptism

  764. includes that idea of

  765. being identified or

  766. needing to be identified

  767. with Jesus.

  768. And so Paul uses that

  769. idea and takes us back

  770. to those key Easter

  771. events.

  772. To Jesus dead and

  773. buried for sin and for

  774. sinners.

  775. To remind us that we've

  776. been baptized into his

  777. death.

  778. And that the power of

  779. sin over us is now dead

  780. and buried.

  781. And therefore we are to

  782. count ourselves dead to

  783. sin.

  784. It's no longer our

  785. master.

  786. Jesus rose to new life,

  787. Paul tells us.

  788. And in him we too live a

  789. new life while we await

  790. future resurrection life.

  791. And again he's telling

  792. Christians this in the

  793. first century.

  794. We need to hear it in the

  795. 21st century because here

  796. is a freedom and here is

  797. an identity worth

  798. pursuing.

  799. It's a way to escape the

  800. rollercoaster of being in

  801. and out with God.

  802. You know how does that

  803. happen?

  804. You know he loves me, he

  805. loves me not when it

  806. comes to God.

  807. It happens when we make

  808. it about us.

  809. My feelings towards God.

  810. My obedience towards God.

  811. And our great need is to

  812. see that Christ is always

  813. only and forever our basis

  814. of faith.

  815. He never changes.

  816. He never fails.

  817. His love is constant.

  818. Our security is in a fixed

  819. identity.

  820. And you and I need this.

  821. We need this secure identity

  822. for when we sin.

  823. When we sin badly.

  824. We can still believe in a

  825. God of faithful love.

  826. Again, here the wise

  827. counsel.

  828. I've been borrowing a lot

  829. recently from Thomas

  830. Goodwin.

  831. If you're interested, he's

  832. definitely my new favorite

  833. Puritan.

  834. He's got a lovely book

  835. called Christ Set

  836. Forth.

  837. Basically looking at

  838. Romans 8.34.

  839. Here's one of his

  840. phrases.

  841. By virtue of Jesus being

  842. justified as he

  843. represents us from all

  844. sorts of sins, even so

  845. shall all sorts of sinners

  846. be justified in and

  847. through him also.

  848. And therefore, should you

  849. not also hope to be

  850. justified from yours?

  851. It's wonderful to think of

  852. the resurrection as God

  853. the Father justifying and

  854. then delighting in his son.

  855. And in Jesus, we too are

  856. justified and the Father

  857. delights in us.

  858. When we look beyond the

  859. events of the cross to

  860. think about God's intended

  861. outcome of those events,

  862. we see the Son of God

  863. loved me and gave himself

  864. for me.

  865. And that, that's Christian

  866. freedom.

  867. To enjoy the love of God as

  868. our Father through the

  869. saving work of Jesus,

  870. his Son.

  871. One last thing to say, and

  872. it's the little turn that

  873. happens in verses 12 to

  874. 14, where Paul moves from

  875. here's some things that are

  876. true to here's the

  877. consequences of what's

  878. true.

  879. And so as we close, think

  880. about this, go to live out

  881. our new freedom in Christ.

  882. I read a sad interview this

  883. week.

  884. There was a guy who had

  885. spent 38 years, I think it

  886. was 38 years in prison for a

  887. crime he didn't commit.

  888. He went into prison in 1986.

  889. And so he was interviewed

  890. after his release.

  891. And so part of the

  892. interview was talking about

  893. how much the world has

  894. changed.

  895. It's hard to imagine.

  896. Imagine almost four

  897. decades.

  898. You know, you go in,

  899. there's no internet, the

  900. iron curtain is still there.

  901. He was talking about

  902. having to learn about

  903. smartphones, how you have

  904. to do everything on your

  905. phone.

  906. So it's hard work.

  907. But the sad part was when

  908. he talked about how

  909. institutionalized he'd

  910. become.

  911. He got so used to the

  912. regime of prison life.

  913. So one morning when he was

  914. in his new home, he wanted

  915. to go outside.

  916. So he got himself all ready.

  917. But rather than opening the

  918. door, he went and sat back

  919. on his bed.

  920. And he patiently waited.

  921. Now why is he waiting?

  922. He was waiting because he

  923. was expecting a guard would

  924. come and release him.

  925. He had become institutionalized.

  926. Even when he was free, he was

  927. acting as if he was still

  928. in prison.

  929. And he talked in that

  930. interview asking himself,

  931. what are you thinking?

  932. But he was discovering it was

  933. hard to live out his newfound

  934. freedom.

  935. As Paul closes, he moves from

  936. all those wonderful truths about

  937. freedom and Christ's death and

  938. resurrection.

  939. So here's how to live in light

  940. of the truth.

  941. Verse 12,

  942. Therefore do not let sin reign in

  943. your mortal body so that you

  944. obey its evil desires.

  945. Do not offer any part of

  946. yourself to sin as an instrument

  947. of wickedness, but rather offer

  948. yourselves to God as those who

  949. have been brought from death to

  950. life.

  951. And offer every part of yourself

  952. to him as an instrument of

  953. righteousness.

  954. For sin shall no longer be your

  955. master because you're not under

  956. the law, but under grace.

  957. Don't live as a slave to sin, he

  958. tells believers, because you have

  959. a new master.

  960. You have a new power within you.

  961. You have a new freedom to enjoy.

  962. Notice he doesn't say to us,

  963. work really hard to break free

  964. from sin, because that would still

  965. be to be in chains.

  966. But he makes plain Christ has set

  967. you free.

  968. And the proof of that is the cross

  969. and the empty tomb.

  970. Because that's true, he can say

  971. joyfully live out of that freedom.

  972. But he also makes that moral call,

  973. because you've been set free,

  974. don't give any of your faculties

  975. to sin and to wickedness.

  976. Now whether we're thinking about

  977. our emotions, whether we're thinking

  978. about our intelligence, whether we're

  979. thinking about our finances, our

  980. energies, the things we do or say

  981. or think, we are not to give any

  982. of our faculties to sin and

  983. wickedness, but rather,

  984. what are we to do?

  985. We are to give them, give ourselves

  986. to God.

  987. We are to lead a new life by God's

  988. grace with Jesus, not sin and death

  989. as our master.

  990. And because that is true,

  991. you and I can gratefully live in

  992. obedience and service.

  993. You and I have now been set free

  994. to freely give ourselves to the one

  995. who gave everything to save us.

  996. It's a wonderful freedom

  997. as we trust what Jesus did.

  998. To trust that what he did, he did for us.

  999. There's a wonderful freedom

  1000. as we remember.

1001. By faith, we are united to Jesus.

1002. Those chains of sin have been broken.

  1003. We've been given a new identity

  1004. and we have grace

  1005. to live for him.

1006. Let's take a moment to give thanks

  1007. as we pray.

1008. Our Lord and our God, once again,

  1009. we thank you for

  1010. the death and resurrection

  1011. of the Lord Jesus.

  1012. Now we thank you

1013. in particular for the way

  1014. you are.
