  1. Okay, Anne's going to come and read for us from Luke's Gospel.

  2. Luke chapter 24, verse 13.

    Luke 24:13

  3. What is this conversation that you're holding with each other as you walk?

  4. And they stood still, looking sad.

  5. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him,

  6. Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?

  7. And he said to them, What things?

  8. And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  9. a man who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word, before God and all the people,

  10. and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

  11. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.

  12. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

  13. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us.

  14. They were at the tomb early in the morning,

  15. and when they did not find his body,

  16. they came back, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels,

  17. who said that he was alive.

  18. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it,

  19. just as the women had said,

  20. but him they did not see.

  21. And he said to them,

  22. O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken,

  23. was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?

  24. And beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  25. he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

  26. So they drew near to the village to which they were going.

  27. He acted as if he were going further,

  28. but they urged him strongly, saying,

  29. Stay with us, for it is towards evening, and the day is now far spent.

  30. So he went in to stay with them.

  31. When he was at table with them,

  32. he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them.

  33. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.

  34. And he vanished from their sight.

  35. They said to each other,

  36. Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on this road,

  37. while he opened to us the scriptures?

  38. And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem.

  39. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,

  40. saying, The Lord is risen indeed and has appeared to Simon.

  41. Then they told what had happened on the road

  42. and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

  43. Amen.

  44. Well, the writer Luke that we've just read from in Luke 24,

  45. he is a master storyteller in his gospel.

  46. And I think the two most moving stories in all the gospels

  47. are when Jesus tells the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15,

  48. and then this story, The Road to Emmaus,

  49. where Jesus approaches these two minor characters

  50. that really have played no role up until this point.

  51. And in the first, the prodigal son,

  52. the very famous prodigal son story, Luke 15,

  53. Luke gives you the, Jesus gives you the heart of the father,

  54. that the father longs to pursue prodigal sons and daughters

  55. and bring them home.

  56. And he wants to throw a feast for them.

  57. He wants to give you a banquet.

  58. In the other, I think, most moving story, Luke 24,

  59. we have a mirror of the normal Christian disciple here.

  60. And it's so ordinary.

  61. It's so normal.

  62. It's showing us our own lives.

  63. Jesus meets us on the road.

  64. And then where does that road take you to?

  65. It takes you to the table.

  66. At the very end, he takes them all the way to Emmaus,

  67. and he lays out for them a feast.

  68. There's bread broken.

  69. And in the same way, the two most moving moments,

  70. I think, in the gospels, perhaps,

  71. are when we see that God wants to pursue you

  72. and bring you all the way to the table.

  73. And that's exactly what we have here

  74. in the road to Emmaus story.

  75. In the ancient world, kings would win great victories.

  76. Julius Caesar won many great victories.

  77. And when he would, he would go out

  78. and he would parade through the streets of Rome.

  79. Pomp and circumstance, crowds would gather.

  80. That's the classic work of the ancient king.

  81. Now, this is Resurrection Sunday.

  82. The greatest victory that there's ever been has taken place.

  83. Death has been defeated.

  84. That's a big one.

  85. That's a big win.

  86. And there's no pomp and circumstance.

  87. There's no parade.

  88. Instead, where is Jesus?

  89. On Resurrection Sunday,

  90. he is doing something disconcertingly ordinary,

  91. extraordinarily ordinary.

  92. He's on the dusty road with two minor characters

  93. going to a no-name village, Emmaus.

  94. We don't even know where it is.

  95. We saw that in week one.

  96. And what we're being shown here is that Jesus,

  97. like the rest of the gospels,

  98. continues to show up in ordinary people's lives.

  99. He wanted to go to the fishermen and the tax collector

  100. and the prostitute and the person who was out

  101. of the center of the social order.

  102. And here, he's doing the exact same thing.

  103. He's showing us the paradigm of the Christian life.

  104. That's why Luke calls Christianity the way.

  105. It's the same Greek word that gets used here in Luke 24

  106. for the road,

  107. that Jesus continues to show up on ordinary roads

  108. to ordinary people like us.

  109. And eventually, you realize that it's not just that

  110. he's come to walk with you on your road,

  111. but that you're now walking on his road.

  112. And he is the journeyman.

  113. He's the one that has already gone before you.

  114. He's already paved the way for you.

  115. And he is bringing you all the way to the table,

  116. all the way to the table.

  117. And so what we read about here is the end of the normal road

  118. of the Christian life is to finally arrive at Emmaus

  119. in verse 28 and to sit down with Jesus Christ at the table

  120. and then to see him, to wake up.

  121. And so if there's one verb in the passage

  122. that really becomes the paradigm structure

  123. of the whole story, it's all about sight.

  124. So their eyes are closed.

  125. They're kept from seeing him in verse 16.

  126. And then you can see in verse 31 and 45,

  127. first, he opens their eyes by opening scripture.

  128. He explains the Old Testament,

  129. how the cross was necessary from the Torah,

  130. the first five books of Moses and the prophets

  131. from Joshua all the way through to Ezekiel and Jeremiah,

  132. then to the writings, the Psalms and further.

  133. And the language Luke uses, it says,

  134. when he opened the Bible

  135. and he showed them Jesus in the Old Testament,

  136. he opened their eyes to see, he opened their minds.

  137. The second way he gives sight to the spiritually blind

  138. in this passage is he brings them to the table.

  139. And so in verse 32, when they sat down,

  140. he broke the bread, we're told they could see him.

  141. One commentator I found this week

  142. gives a really helpful summary.

  143. This is week, if you're visiting today,

  144. this is week three, looking at the same passage,

  145. the road to Emmaus.

  146. And so I just summarized the past two weeks.

  147. And I found a commentator this week

  148. that I thought summarized what we've said so far,

  149. really hopefully.

  150. And so this is what he writes.

  151. It is both a wonderful, unique, spellbinding tale

  152. and a model.

  153. And Luke surely knew this

  154. for a great deal of what being a Christian is

  155. from that day to this day

  156. is the very thing we see in Luke 24.

  157. The slow, sad dismay at the failure of human hopes,

  158. the turning to someone

  159. who might or might not be able to help,

  160. the discovery that in scripture,

  161. though unexpected,

  162. there lay keys which might unlock the central mystery

  163. and enable us to find the truth.

  164. Then the sudden realization of Jesus himself

  165. warming our hearts with his truth

  166. as the bread is broken at the table.

  167. So today we come to the table,

  168. the bread being broken at the table from verse 28.

  169. Jesus is in the business of giving human beings sight

  170. from their blindness.

  171. He does so with the word last week

  172. and with the table this week.

  173. And so let me give you this morning two realities,

  174. two realities that the table of Emmaus teaches us

  175. that we were made for,

  176. two things that you were made for

  177. that the table of Emmaus shows you.

  178. And then just one thing you can do with that today.

  179. Okay, so first the two realities.

  180. The first is this,

  181. we shall be like him.

  182. And the way the New Testament works

  183. is the writers of the epistles,

  184. they draw on the wonderful works of God

  185. throughout the history of redemption

  186. and they take from God's wonderful works,

  187. truths, statements, we call that doctrine.

  188. And you've got this great moment

  189. in one of John's letters, 1 John,

  190. where he gives you, I think, two statements of doctrine

  191. that are basically just the unfolding

  192. of the Emmaus table.

  193. And here they are.

  194. This is what John says in 1 John 3, 2.

  195. We know that when Jesus appears one day,

  196. number one, we shall be like him.

  197. And then number two,

  198. because we shall see him as he is.

  199. So there's the two realities that we were made for.

  200. These are just the doctrinal statements

  201. of the road to Emmaus.

  202. And the first is,

  203. one day you shall be like him.

  204. Now, we talked in week one

  205. about how Jesus shows up on the road

  206. to these two travelers

  207. and they can't see him.

  208. They're spiritually blind,

  209. but also they're physically blind in that moment.

  210. The physical blindness stands in

  211. for spiritual blindness.

  212. And they can't see him

  213. because of spiritual blindness.

  214. They thought he was gonna redeem Israel from Rome.

  215. They wanted circumstantial salvation,

  216. not salvation from their sins.

  217. But there's another reason they can't see him.

  218. And the other reason they can't see him

  219. is because Jesus' body was different.

  220. They can't tell it's him

  221. because he did look different.

  222. And so we see that in John 20.

  223. Mary Magdalene is there.

  224. She's in the garden with Jesus.

  225. She thinks he's the gardener.

  226. And she can't see that it's Jesus.

  227. He's different.

  228. And then in John 21,

  229. the disciples are fishing

  230. and they look out

  231. and they think it might be him.

  232. Even when they're on the beach with him,

  233. John says,

  234. they thought it was him,

  235. but they dared not ask.

  236. Jesus looks different.

  237. You know that if you've seen somebody,

  238. you know somebody,

  239. a beloved who's died.

  240. Early degradation of a human body

  241. causes a person to look different.

  242. And boy,

  243. what must that difference be

  244. in a resurrected, glorified body?

  245. If death causes us to look different,

  246. how does,

  247. what could resurrection possibly do

  248. to the human self?

  249. And here,

  250. one of the reasons they can't see him

  251. is because Jesus is not the same anymore.

  252. He looks different than he wants to.

  253. So this is what the theologians say.

  254. They say this,

  255. the very same body of Jesus

  256. that hung on the cross,

  257. that died,

  258. the very same body

  259. that died on the cross

  260. now operates under a new condition,

  261. a new set of physical laws.

  262. Now, what we have here

  263. is the very same body

  264. of Jesus Christ,

  265. yet they can't tell

  266. because he's changed.

  267. And just later on in this passage,

  268. Luke 24, 39,

  269. he goes,

  270. he shows up with the 11

  271. and he says,

  272. look at my hands,

  273. look at my feet,

  274. see the scars.

  275. What is he saying?

  276. He's saying,

  277. it really is me.

  278. This is my body.

  279. So it's very important to see

  280. that Jesus is saying there

  281. in that moment,

  282. the body that died on the cross

  283. is the body

  284. that is standing before you.

  285. Look at the scars.

  286. Look at my hands and my feet.

  287. After that,

  288. he picks up a piece of cooked fish

  289. and eats it.

  290. He's not a ghost.

  291. Ghosts don't digest fish.

  292. But Jesus' resurrected body

  293. died just a fish.

  294. He breaks bread.

  295. He eats the meal with them.

  296. He digests the bread.

  297. He's a real physical body.

  298. It is the body that he died with,

  299. that he is raised with.

  300. But at the same time,

  301. it's different.

  302. And so in this moment

  303. at the Emmaus table,

  304. he eats with them

  305. though he vanishes.

  306. Later on,

  307. he shows up to the 11.

  308. The door is locked

  309. though he appears in the room

  310. without going through the door.

  311. And what we're seeing

  312. in this moment

  313. is that there is something the same

  314. and something new.

  315. Sometimes people will talk about

  316. the resurrection body

  317. as if it's like a caterpillar

  318. going into the cocoon

  319. and becoming a butterfly.

  320. And that is not a good metaphor

  321. for the resurrection.

  322. Jesus is not like a caterpillar

  323. that went into the cocoon

  324. and became a butterfly.

  325. No, because he's not transforming

  326. from something that he once was,

  327. a mere caterpillar,

  328. into this gorgeous butterfly.

  329. No, he is him.

  330. This is him.

  331. It's his body.

  332. Yet, what we're seeing

  333. is an image,

  334. a reality

  335. of what it's like

  336. to have an Edenic body

  337. in the midst of

  338. a corrupted space-time.

  339. We've got here

  340. a body that belongs in Eden

  341. existing within

  342. the corrupted world.

  343. And you're just getting

  344. a slight,

  345. very mysterious,

  346. to be sure,

  347. glimpse

  348. of what that kind of body

  349. behaves like.

  350. And the promise

  351. of the road

  352. to Emmaus,

  353. of the table,

  354. is that as they sit

  355. across him,

  356. it's implied,

  357. they shall be like him.

  358. And John comes later

  359. and says it

  360. in 1 John 3.

  361. He says,

  362. you will be like him.

  363. Your physical body

  364. will be just like his.

  365. You will eat fish.

  366. You will break bread

  367. and digest.

  368. You will be a physical body,

  369. but you,

  370. at the same time,

  371. will be transformed.

  372. He,

  373. Paul says,

  374. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  375. he said,

  376. the metaphor you need

  377. is that his body

  378. was sown into the ground

  379. like a seed

  380. and that it's raised up

  381. imperishable.

  382. The perishable goes down,

  383. but the imperishable comes up

  384. and that the imperishable

  385. is now,

  386. quote,

  387. Paul says this,

  388. a spiritual body.

  389. Now,

  390. that sounds almost like

  391. he's saying,

  392. you will become

  393. a great spirit,

  394. but that's not

  395. what he means.

  396. Spiritual body

  397. in 1 Corinthians 15,

  398. what does it mean?

  399. It means,

  400. your body will be transformed

  401. by the Holy Spirit.

  402. You will be a Holy Spirit

  403. transformed body,

  404. physical body,

  405. just like Jesus Christ here

  406. before he went into heaven.

  407. Look,

  408. when you,

  409. I'll move on,

  410. let me say this,

  411. when you stand next to your grave,

  412. the next time you do,

  413. know that what you are really looking at

  414. at that grave side,

  415. for a believer,

  416. somebody who has walked

  417. the Emmaus road with Christ

  418. by faith,

  419. you are looking at a person,

  420. you are there,

  421. remembering a person,

  422. who has been sown

  423. into the ground

  424. as a seed

  425. that will come up again

  426. as an imperishable body.

  427. And if you come today

  428. by faith,

  429. walking the road,

  430. Jesus has met you on the road

  431. and you're walking the road

  432. by faith,

  433. your body will be sown.

  434. Somebody will stand

  435. at your graveside

  436. and they will say,

  437. they are a seed now

  438. and they will be raised

  439. an imperishable body.

  440. How about it?

  441. Do you want that?

  442. You will be like him.

  443. The gospel does not offer you

  444. an escape from your body.

  445. It offers you a healed body,

  446. a resurrected body.

  447. You will be whole.

  448. You'll be you.

  449. Jesus Christ's body

  450. really was broken at the cross

  451. like bread

  452. so that you one day

  453. can have a healed body,

  454. a physical body

  455. that is whole again.

  456. He didn't come

  457. to make you float

  458. on the clouds.

  459. He came to redeem

  460. your whole being.

  461. And that's what the first thing

  462. the table promises you,

  463. the future.

  464. You will be like him.

  465. Your body will be like his.

  466. Secondly,

  467. the last promise here,

  468. 1 John 3, 2,

  469. what does it say?

  470. Not only you shall be like him,

  471. but you will see him

  472. as he is.

  473. Now,

  474. verse 28,

  475. it's the end of the day.

  476. They've been traveling

  477. down the road to Emmaus

  478. all afternoon,

  479. experiencing the greatest

  480. Bible study there ever was.

  481. And they're tired.

  482. It's probably getting dark.

  483. And here it says that

  484. he acted as if

  485. he were going farther than them.

  486. So Jesus,

  487. when they finally get

  488. to where they were going,

  489. Emmaus,

  490. he acts as though

  491. he's going to carry on.

  492. Why?

  493. He wants them

  494. to want him.

  495. He wants them

  496. to invite him

  497. into their home.

  498. And so,

  499. they respond.

  500. It says,

  501. they strongly urged him

  502. to stay.

  503. So it's,

  504. I mean,

  505. there's this sense

  506. in that Greek verb there

  507. that they sort of

  508. kind of almost yank his arm

  509. into the room

  510. and say,

  511. you're not going anywhere.

  512. You know,

  513. that was a very good

  514. Bible study.

  515. Please do not leave.

  516. We want more.

  517. And so they pull him in.

  518. Now,

  519. they're probably staying

  520. at either

  521. one of the travelers' homes,

  522. Cleopas' house.

  523. Seems like they're from Emmaus.

  524. Or,

  525. they're renting an inn.

  526. And so,

  527. Cleopas or the other guy,

  528. the other person

  529. is paying for it.

  530. Whatever way it works,

  531. it's definitely clear

  532. that the text,

  533. Luke wants us to see

  534. that Cleopas

  535. and the traveler

  536. are the hosts.

  537. They're bringing Jesus

  538. into their home.

  539. And they're going

  540. to feed him.

  541. They're going to pay

  542. for whatever it costs

  543. to have him.

  544. And then that's where

  545. the passage,

  546. as it turns towards

  547. the table,

  548. begins this great reversal.

  549. Because it's their house.

  550. They're the hosts.

  551. They're supposed to be

  552. paying for everything.

  553. And in verse 30,

  554. when the bread is brought out,

  555. it says that he took it,

  556. he blessed it,

  557. he broke it,

  558. and he gave it to them.

  559. Now,

  560. these are the same four verbs

  561. as the feeding

  562. of the 5,000.

  563. Three of the four verbs

  564. show up

  565. in the institution

  566. of the Lord's Supper

  567. the night before Jesus died

  568. in Luke's Gospel.

  569. Three of the four.

  570. And at a first century

  571. Jewish table,

  572. the host,

  573. the owner of the home,

  574. the man in the family,

  575. he has the job

  576. to break the bread.

  577. And so the way

  578. you would start

  579. a first century meal

  580. showing hospitality

  581. to somebody

  582. is that the man

  583. of the house

  584. who owns the home

  585. would begin the meal

  586. by the breaking of bread.

  587. They are the host.

  588. They're meant

  589. to be hospitable to him.

  590. As soon as they sit down

  591. at the table,

  592. it's Jesus

  593. that takes the bread

  594. off the table

  595. and breaks it.

  596. And immediately,

  597. there's a great reversal

  598. happening.

  599. They begin to realize

  600. what Luke wants you to see

  601. and that's that

  602. he is the host.

  603. He has become

  604. the host of the meal.

  605. This is his house.

  606. He's the one in charge.

  607. And when it says

  608. he kept going,

  609. he acted as if

  610. he were going to go further

  611. the whole time

  612. you learn that

  613. Jesus was actually

  614. the one that was

  615. showing hospitality

  616. to them.

  617. Now,

  618. it is

  619. very common

  620. in Christian

  621. evangelical

  622. cultural idiom

  623. to say things like

  624. I invited Jesus

  625. into my heart.

  626. I asked Jesus

  627. into my life

  628. and that's how

  629. I got saved.

  630. And I understand

  631. that language.

  632. It's not bad.

  633. There's so much

  634. about it that's

  635. so true, right?

  636. But when we say

  637. I became a Christian

  638. because I invited

  639. Jesus into my heart,

  640. we're using language

  641. that suggests

  642. that we are

  643. the master

  644. of our own domain,

  645. the master

  646. of my heart.

  647. I am the master

  648. of my heart

  649. and I very generously

  650. opened the door

  651. to Jesus

  652. to let and said,

  653. oh, you can come in now.

  654. And when you come

  655. to the Emmaus table,

  656. what you find out

  657. is that when you think

  658. you're inviting Jesus

  659. into your life,

  660. he's actually the one

  661. that's been showing

  662. hospitality to you

  663. the whole time.

  664. You know,

  665. when you think

  666. that you are the host

  667. of Jesus coming

  668. into your heart,

  669. it's actually that

  670. Jesus has been the one

  671. inviting you

  672. into his home

  673. the entire path.

  674. You know,

  675. he comes up

  676. and shows up to you

  677. on your road

  678. and then eventually

  679. you realize actually

  680. this was his road.

  681. And it's a simple truth,

  682. a simple application,

  683. but I think one of the things

  684. the Emmaus table

  685. says to us is that

  686. you are not your own,

  687. I am not my own,

  688. that your life

  689. doesn't belong to you.

  690. You know,

  691. it destroys the illusion

  692. of control.

  693. It breaks through

  694. and tells you,

  695. you don't,

  696. it frees you

  697. because you don't,

  698. you don't have to be

  699. in charge of your own life.

  700. You don't have to make

  701. your own meaning.

  702. You can be liberated

  703. by the fact that,

  704. that God is actually

  705. the one who's in control.

  706. He's actually the one

  707. that's showing you hospitality,

  708. never you him.

  709. And so every time

  710. you invite him in,

  711. it's only because

  712. he's first invited you

  713. into his life.

  714. And so we've got

  715. this wonderful

  716. German catechism

  717. from the 16th century.

  718. Somehow I get

  719. to a German reference,

  720. 50% of the Sundays

  721. we have,

  722. and here we are,

  723. it's been a couple weeks.

  724. And so the wonderful reference

  725. from the Heidelberg catechism,

  726. which says,

  727. what is your only comfort

  728. in life and death?

  729. That I'm not my own,

  730. but I belong

  731. in body and in soul

  732. and life and death

  733. to the faithful savior,

  734. Jesus Christ.

  735. Jesus Christ is the host

  736. of this meal.

  737. He's invited us onto his road.

  738. He's invited us to his table.

  739. And when they realize that

  740. in verse 30,

  741. they're at the table,

  742. he's broken the bread

  743. and given it to them.

  744. All of a sudden we read,

  745. they could see him.

  746. Their faith now becomes sight.

  747. And you see,

  748. he showed up on their,

  749. on their road,

  750. in their lives.

  751. He brought them down the road

  752. by opening to them

  753. the scriptures.

  754. He showed them himself

  755. through the scriptures.

  756. And then here,

  757. you know,

  758. they needed to see

  759. that the cross

  760. was in the Old Testament

  761. all the time.

  762. That the cross

  763. had always been preached

  764. from the Old Testament.

  765. Then as they sat down

  766. at the table,

  767. they finally could see him.

  768. He opens their sight.

  769. Now,

  770. what is that?

  771. What's going on here?

  772. This,

  773. what we're reading about

  774. is the destination

  775. of every single Christian.

  776. So if you're a believer

  777. in this room today,

  778. if you walk with him

  779. in some measure

  780. by faith today,

  781. the destination

  782. of every single believer

  783. is to sit down at Jesus,

  784. sit down with Jesus

  785. at the table

  786. and to see him.

  787. And the theologians

  788. call that the beatific vision.

  789. This is the paradigm.

  790. What we're reading about

  791. in Emmaus

  792. is the paradigm

  793. of the ordinary Christian life.

  794. And the ordinary Christian life

  795. ends the moment

  796. that you sit down

  797. at the table

  798. with him one day

  799. and your eyes are open

  800. to see Jesus Christ

  801. in person.

  802. It's called the beatific,

  803. the blessed vision,

  804. the visio dei,

  805. the vision of God.

  806. It is the reality

  807. you were made for.

  808. It is the hope

  809. of every single human being.

  810. Now today,

  811. you might desire

  812. all sorts of things

  813. and our desires

  814. are such a jumble

  815. of messes,

  816. aren't they?

  817. But the truth is

  818. the reason that we're

  819. never satisfied

  820. in this life

  821. with anything,

  822. the best things

  823. that we get,

  824. we still ultimately

  825. are discontent.

  826. It's because

  827. the desire underneath

  828. every single desire

  829. is that you would come

  830. and sit at the table

  831. with God

  832. and see him.

  833. It is the very thing

  834. you were made

  835. to be like him

  836. and you were made

  837. to see him.

  838. You will see him

  839. as he is

  840. and that's the promise.

  841. The Emmaus road

  842. is the normal pattern

  843. of the Christian life

  844. and at the end

  845. of the Christian life,

  846. you sit at the table

  847. at the banquet feast

  848. with Jesus Christ

  849. and you get to see

  850. God face to face.

  851. Now this is

  852. the tension

  853. of the Old Testament

  854. and it really is

  855. the most persistent

  856. ache, heartburn

  857. of the Bible.

  858. The movement

  859. from Genesis 3 forward,

  860. there is a persistent

  861. burning, yearning,

  862. aching all throughout

  863. that's woven

  864. all the way to this moment

  865. of longing to see God.

  866. So you remember Moses

  867. when he is on

  868. the mountain of Sinai,

  869. Mount Sinai,

  870. what does he say?

  871. He says,

  872. please Lord,

  873. show me your glory,

  874. let me see your face

  875. and the response

  876. that God gives

  877. is one of both

  878. mercy and terror

  879. at the same time.

  880. You know,

  881. he says to Moses,

  882. no rebellious sinful human

  883. could possibly see

  884. the face of God,

  885. my face,

  886. and live

  887. and so

  888. the response is terror

  889. that you were made

  890. to see God

  891. but the tension

  892. of the Old Testament

  893. is that you cannot

  894. see God

  895. because of your sin

  896. and your rebellion

  897. and yet God

  898. takes Moses

  899. and he puts him

  900. in the cleft

  901. of the rock

  902. and allows him

  903. to see just a glimpse

  904. of his glory

  905. and God is saying

  906. to Moses there,

  907. you know,

  908. Moses was the one person

  909. in the Old Testament

  910. that's called

  911. the friend of God

  912. who can see my face

  913. and yet when it came

  914. time to see his face,

  915. Moses couldn't see his face

  916. and that's the tension.

  917. How can a rebellious

  918. sinful human being

  919. see the very sight

  920. that you were made

  921. to see

  922. and the face

  923. of God

  924. and David,

  925. remember David,

  926. we sang about it

  927. Psalm 27

  928. just a moment ago,

  929. David says

  930. in Psalm 27,

  931. I long to see

  932. the beauty

  933. of God's face

  934. in the land

  935. of the living.

  936. 1 John 3, 2,

  937. you shall be like him

  938. in the land

  939. of the living,

  940. you shall see him

  941. as he is

  942. and David said,

  943. I want to see

  944. the beauty

  945. of the face

  946. of the Lord

  947. in the land

  948. of the living

  949. and you see

  950. all the tension

  951. that's built up

  952. in the Old Testament

  953. of how are you

  954. going to get

  955. what you are made for

  956. is found

  957. when you come

  958. to the New Testament

  959. and Paul's words,

  960. in Christ,

  961. the veil is removed.

  962. We all

  963. with unveiled faces,

  964. we will behold

  965. the glory of the Lord

  966. and we shall see him

  967. as he is

  968. and the great tension

  969. that is the great problem

  970. of being human

  971. and yet sinful

  972. is all culminating

  973. to this moment

  974. when you're being shown

  975. in the Emmaus Road

  976. that the very path

  977. of the ordinary

  978. Christian life

  979. by faith

  980. is that if you will

  981. walk the road

  982. by faith,

  983. one day you will have sight.

  984. You will have the very thing

  985. you were made for.

  986. Every desire

  987. that has been unmet

  988. in this life,

  989. everything that you have chased

  990. and has been just meh,

  991. will one day find

  992. its utter fulfillment.

  993. It's great fulfillment.

  994. Fulfillment in a way

  995. you can't possibly understand today.

  996. I can't possibly understand today

  997. in seeing the beauty

  998. of his face

  999. at the table,

  1000. at the banquet feast

  1001. and just listen

  1002. to the language.

  1003. You know,

1004. it shows up all across

  1005. the New Testament.

  1006. We read it

1007. in our call to work,

  1008. I'm sorry,

  1009. Old Testament.

  1010. We read it

1011. in the call to worship today

  1012. from Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1013. where we long

  1014. for the condescension

  1015. of God

1016. into the Garden of Eden

  1017. all the way

  1018. to Revelation 19,

  1019. the marriage supper

  1020. of the Lamb.

  1021. Isaiah 25 says,

  1022. Isaiah 25 says,

  1023. at the banquet feast,

1024. he will swallow up death forever.

  1025. Isaiah 55,

1026. come every one of you

1027. who thirst to see him.

  1028. Come without money.

  1029. You don't need money.

  1030. Come without price.

  1031. You can come

  1032. to the banquet table

  1033. of the king.

  1034. It's been promised

  1035. all throughout the lineage

  1036. of the Old Testament

1037. and this is the moment

1038. where you're simply being told

  1039. this is not for

  1040. the all-stars

  1041. of the Bible.

  1042. This is not for

  1043. the heavyweights

  1044. of the Bible.

1045. This is not just for Moses.

  1046. Moses was one

  1047. of the heavyweights.

  1048. David,

  1049. you know,

  1050. Mary,

  1051. this is,

  1052. this is,

1053. what does it make you think?

1054. This is for ordinary people.

  1055. People that don't even

  1056. have names,

  1057. minor characters

  1058. that are going,

1059. that living in small towns

  1060. and places

  1061. that don't matter

  1062. that much.

1063. I wonder if you could say

  1064. today,

  1065. would the psalmist

  1066. in Psalm 42,

  1067. as the deer pants

  1068. for flowing streams,

  1069. so my soul longs

  1070. for God.

  1071. As a deer comes

  1072. thirsting for water,

  1073. so my soul longs

  1074. to see God.

  1075. Whether or not

  1076. you feel that today

  1077. or not,

  1078. that is what you

  1079. were made for.

  1080. And what we're being

  1081. told here,

  1082. let me put it

  1083. in the words

  1084. of Augustine.

  1085. Augustine,

  1086. at the end

1087. of the city of God,

  1088. that massive tome

  1089. he wrote about

  1090. the fall of Rome,

  1091. he uses these verbs

  1092. to describe this moment

  1093. and he says,

  1094. in that day

  1095. at the banquet,

  1096. we shall rest

  1097. and see,

  1098. see and love,

  1099. love and praise,

  1100. and that shall be

  1101. for us

  1102. the eternal Sabbath.

  1103. This isn't,

  1104. I think the reason

  1105. that this is

1106. in the Road to a Man story

  1107. is because this isn't

  1108. the hope for the

  1109. Christian elite.

  1110. This is for anybody

  1111. who comes and follows

  1112. Jesus on the way,

  1113. who comes by faith.

  1114. God is,

1115. God is keeping a seat

1116. at the table for you.

  1117. So let me finish

  1118. with this.

1119. One thing you can do

  1120. with this today

  1121. as we close

  1122. and it's simple,

  1123. come to worship tonight

  1124. because we're going

  1125. to celebrate

  1126. the Lord's Supper.

1127. So I know it would be

  1128. wholly appropriate

  1129. for us to celebrate

  1130. the Lord's Supper

  1131. this morning,

  1132. but we are celebrating

  1133. the Lord's Supper tonight.

  1134. And the reason

  1135. that's the invitation,

  1136. the application

1137. is because in verse 30

1138. when Jesus breaks the bread

  1139. and he blesses it

  1140. and he gives it,

1141. there are so many commentators

  1142. that for some reason

  1143. say,

1144. kind of go out of their way

1145. to get ahead of this

  1146. and say,

1147. this is not the Lord's Supper.

1148. And that is my very favorite,

  1149. by the way,

  1150. my very favorite commentator

  1151. on the whole Bible

1152. goes out of his way

  1153. to say,

1154. this is not the Lord's Supper.

  1155. However,

  1156. it's half true.

  1157. It's half right.

  1158. Why?

  1159. Well,

  1160. remember,

  1161. remember your Westminster

  1162. Shorter Catechism.

  1163. Okay.

  1164. Question 92.

1165. Let's all say it together.

  1166. No,

  1167. I can't say it either.

  1168. Don't worry.

1169. I definitely cannot say it.

1170. I had to look it up.

  1171. I wrote it down.

  1172. In fact,

  1173. question 92,

  1174. what is a sacrament?

  1175. And here's the answer.

  1176. A sacrament is a holy ordinance

  1177. instituted by Christ

  1178. wherein,

  1179. and here's the key,

  1180. by sensible signs,

  1181. physical signs,

  1182. bread,

  1183. wine,

  1184. water,

  1185. Christ and the benefits

  1186. of the new covenant

  1187. are represented,

  1188. sealed,

  1189. and applied to us.

  1190. Here's the key word.

1191. I know that's hard to listen to.

  1192. When in the sacraments,

  1193. we have sensible signs,

  1194. physical signs,

  1195. bread,

  1196. wine,

  1197. water,

  1198. that represent to us

  1199. the benefits

  1200. of Jesus Christ

  1201. in the new covenant.

  1202. That's the key word,

  1203. right?

  1204. Represent.

  1205. This isn't the sacrament

  1206. of the Lord's Supper.

  1207. No,

  1208. it certainly isn't.

  1209. Because in the sacrament

  1210. of the Lord's Supper,

1211. when the bread is broken,

1212. when the wine is poured,

  1213. you have a representation

1214. of the most real thing.

1215. But when the risen Lord Jesus

1216. is sitting at the table with you,

1217. you don't need the sacraments.

1218. Are you at the Lord's Supper?

  1219. Well,

  1220. boy,

  1221. you are.

  1222. Every time you eat

  1223. with the risen Jesus,

  1224. you're sitting at the Lord's Supper.

1225. This is the Lord's Supper.

  1226. It's not the sacrament,

  1227. but tonight we celebrate

1228. the sacrament that points us

  1229. to this moment.

  1230. And see,

1231. that's got to create in us

  1232. the question,

1233. am I approaching the table

  1234. in the right posture?

  1235. And I don't mean that

1236. in a way to say

1237. that you've got to be

  1238. in the right condition

1239. in order to come to the table.

  1240. Not at all.

  1241. You know,

1242. there are a couple problems

1243. I think that we have

1244. as we come to the Lord's table

  1245. quite often.

  1246. One is,

1247. we come to the table

  1248. routine

1249. and just thinking about it

  1250. as mere memorial.

  1251. Only looking backwards

1252. to the death of Jesus

  1253. and absolutely we should.

1254. But what we're being told

  1255. about here

  1256. is that every time

1257. you come to the Lord's table,

  1258. it is there

  1259. to create a stirring

  1260. in your heart

  1261. for the moment

1262. that you will sit across

  1263. from the table

  1264. with Jesus Christ

1265. and you will see him

  1266. as he is

1267. and you will be like him

  1268. and you will stare

  1269. at the beauty

  1270. of God's holy face

  1271. at the banquet feast.

  1272. That's what the Lord's Supper

  1273. is there to do.

  1274. Not just a funeral,

  1275. not a mere memorial.

  1276. Jesus isn't dead.

  1277. He's pointing you forward

  1278. to this,

  1279. it's the end

1280. of the road to him.

  1281. It's the end

  1282. of the Christian life

  1283. to banquet

  1284. with Jesus Christ himself.

  1285. The other problem

  1286. we have

  1287. when we come

  1288. to the table

  1289. is we often say,

  1290. you know,

  1291. do I really deserve

1292. to sit at the table

  1293. with Jesus?

  1294. Have I repented enough?

  1295. Have I made myself

  1296. worthy enough?

  1297. And the answer

  1298. is of course not.

  1299. Of course you haven't.

  1300. Of course you've not

  1301. repented enough.

1302. Of course you're not worthy.

  1303. And the promise

  1304. of the table,

  1305. the invitation

  1306. of the Lord's table

1307. is that you do not come

  1308. on the basis

  1309. of your merits.

  1310. Don't treat repentance

  1311. as a merit.

  1312. No, you come

  1313. on the basis

  1314. of his merit.

  1315. You come

  1316. not because you have

  1317. strong faith

  1318. and great repentance.

  1319. You come

  1320. because you are weak

  1321. coming to a strong

  1322. redeemer.

  1323. And, you know,

1324. the night that he was

  1325. betrayed,

  1326. he broke the bread

  1327. and he gave thanks

  1328. and he blessed it

1329. and he gave it to them

  1330. just like he does

  1331. on the Emmaus table.

  1332. And in the ordinary

  1333. Passover meal,

  1334. there is lamb.

  1335. That's the main dish.

1336. There's lamb on the table.

  1337. But that night

  1338. before he was betrayed,

1339. there was no lamb there.

  1340. Not on the table.

  1341. There was no lamb

  1342. on the table

  1343. the night he instituted

  1344. the Lord's Supper.

  1345. Why?

  1346. Because the lamb

1347. that was to be broken

  1348. was standing

1349. at the head of the table.

  1350. The lamb of God

  1351. whose body was broken

  1352. to take away

1353. the sins of the world

  1354. was the one

  1355. hosting that feast.

  1356. And here is

  1357. the resurrected lamb

  1358. at Emmaus

  1359. hosting this feast

  1360. and saying to you,

  1361. this is the promise

  1362. for you.

  1363. You,

  1364. you will sit

1365. at a table one day

  1366. where Jesus Christ

1367. will stand at the head

1368. and he will break bread

1369. and he will hand it to you

1370. and you will see him

  1371. as he is

1372. and you will be like him.

1373. And that is the eternal Sabbath

1374. and that is the everlasting hope.

1375. I will close with this.

  1376. You know,

  1377. if you,

  1378. if you go out,

1379. it is hard to do this

  1380. in Scottish summer,

1381. but if you go out

  1382. in Scottish winter

  1383. in the highlands

1384. in the middle of the night,

1385. middle of the day maybe,

  1386. I don't know,

1387. but middle of the night

1388. and you try to walk

  1389. on a path

  1390. through the Monroe's,

  1391. you know,

  1392. it is pitch,

1393. let us say it is pitch black.

1394. Maybe you are in a forested area,

  1395. it is pitch black

1396. and you get out your torch,

  1397. your flashlight

1398. and you shine your light.

1399. But when the sun rises

  1400. the next day,

  1401. when it is noontime

  1402. the next day,

1403. do you keep your flashlight on,

  1404. your torch on?

  1405. No.

  1406. The sacraments

  1407. are your torch

1408. in the middle of the darkness.

1409. But when the sun rises,

1410. when the feast actually comes,

  1411. when Jesus Christ returns,

1412. you don't keep the torch on,

1413. you don't need it anymore, right?

  1414. The sacraments are here

  1415. to give you strength

  1416. for the journey

  1417. in the darkness,

  1418. the road,

  1419. the road to Emmaus

1420. until you actually get to Emmaus,

1421. until you get to the celestial city,

1422. until you get to the banquet table

  1423. and Jesus Christ himself,

1424. the realest thing is there

  1425. physically with you

1426. and that is the hope

  1427. of every human being,

1428. not just for the Christian,

1429. that is the hope of every human.

1430. It is the only way

  1431. to be truly satisfied.

  1432. John Owen says,

1433. no person shall ever behold

  1434. the glory of Christ

  1435. by sight

  1436. in the life hereafter,

  1437. who does not

  1438. in some measure

  1439. behold him

  1440. today

  1441. here

  1442. by faith.

1443. And so that's the invitation.

  1444. You've got to walk

  1445. the road to Emmaus

  1446. by faith

  1447. if you want to

  1448. one day see him

  1449. by sight.

  1450. And so

  1451. come to the table

  1452. tonight,

  1453. come to the hymn

  1454. this morning

  1455. by faith.

1456. Have you ever been to a,

  1457. you've been to a wedding reception

  1458. and they,

  1459. the feast,

1460. they put the little placards

1461. with your name on them

  1462. wherever you're supposed

  1463. to sit.

1464. Jesus Christ has your name,

  1465. Christian,

  1466. at a place,

  1467. at his table

  1468. in the life

  1469. that is to come.

  1470. You got to walk

1471. that road by faith now

  1472. and one day

  1473. it will be sight.

  1474. Let's pray.

  1475. Father,

  1476. cultivate our desires

  1477. to see Jesus.

  1478. Give us a vision

  1479. for the beauty

1480. of the face of God

1481. in the land of the living.

1482. We pray in Christ's name.

  1483. Amen.

  1484. Amen.

  1485. Amen.
