  1. Today we'll be reading from Numbers 27, verse 1 to 11, and Numbers 36, verse 1 to 13.

Numbers 27:1–11 Numbers 36 chapter mention

  2. ! So if you need the church Bible, you can find them on either side of the stage or at the back.

  3. So in the church Bible, our reading can be found on page 126 for Numbers 27, verse 1 to 11,

    Numbers 27:1–11

  4. and page 134 to 135 for Numbers 36, verse 1 to 13. So we'll start with Numbers 27.

    Numbers 36 chapter mention

  5. Let's listen and open our hearts to God's word for today.

  6. Then drew near the daughters of Solophehad, the son of Hephaer, son of Gilead, son of Macher,

  7. son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were

  8. Malah, Noah, Hogla, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest

  9. and before the chiefs and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying,

  10. Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves

  11. together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin, and he had no sons.

  12. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a

  13. possession among our father's brothers. Moses brought their case before the Lord, and the Lord said to

  14. Moses, The daughters of Solophehad are right. You should give them possession of an inheritance

  15. among their father's brothers, and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you

  16. shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his

  17. inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall transfer his inheritance

  18. to his brothers. And if he has no brothers, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his father's

  19. brothers. And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman

  20. of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel a statute and rule,

  21. as the Lord commanded Moses. Let's continue to Numbers 36.

  22. The heads of the father's houses of the clan of the people of Gilead, the son of Macher, son of Manasseh,

  23. from the clans of the people of Joseph came near and spoke before Moses and before the chiefs,

  24. the heads of the father's houses of the people of Israel. They said, The Lord commanded my Lord

  25. to give the land for inheritance by lot to the people of Israel. And my Lord commanded by the Lord

  26. to give the inheritance of Zelophehad, our brother, to his daughters. But if they are married to any of

  27. the sons of the other tribes of the people of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken from the

  28. inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. So it will be

  29. taken away from the lot of our inheritance. And when the jubilee of the people of Israel comes,

  30. then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry.

  31. And their inheritance will be taken from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.

  32. And Moses commanded the people of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying, The tribe of the

  33. people of Joseph is right. This is what the Lord commands concerning the daughter of Zelophehad.

  34. Let them marry who they think is best. Only they shall marry within the clan of the tribe of their father.

  35. The inheritance of the people of Israel shall not be transferred from one tribe to another.

  36. For every one of the people of Israel shall hold on to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

  37. And every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the people of Israel shall be wife

  38. to one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that every one of the people of Israel may possess

  39. the inheritance of his fathers. So no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another.

  40. For each of the tribes of the people of Israel shall hold on to its own inheritance.

  41. The daughters of Zelophehad did as the Lord commanded Moses.

  42. For Mala, Tirzah, Hogla, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad,

  43. were married to sons of their father's brothers.

  44. They were married into the clans of the people of Manasseh, the son of Joseph,

  45. and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father's clan.

  46. These are the commandments and the rules that the Lord commanded through Moses

  47. to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

  48. Let us believe and respond to God's true and living word.

  49. On button. Oh, yes. Hello.

  50. Good morning, Watermark.

  51. If you don't know me, my name is Oscar.

  52. And if you do know me, my name is still Oscar.

  53. That was an old Chris Thornton joke, if you know Chris.

  54. I serve as one of the elders here at Watermark,

  55. and I feel very privileged and honored to be sharing God's word with Watermark today.

  56. Come join me. Let's pray as we dive into God's word.

  57. Father God, Holy Spirit, Lord Jesus,

  58. please come now and illuminate our hearts.

  59. We don't want to hear my opinion or some ideas that I have.

  60. We want to look at your word,

  61. the word of the sovereign God of the universe.

  62. Come speak to us, Lord.

  63. I pray that as we receive your word and listen,

  64. help us to understand,

  65. help us to conceptualize,

  66. help us to respond

  67. as you desire us to, Lord.

  68. May we come away here, Lord,

  69. not just full of ideas and interesting thoughts,

  70. not just with a pep talk or an encouraging word,

  71. but changed by the power of God

  72. through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  73. May we adore Jesus and love him more today.

  74. We give this time to you in your name. Amen.

  75. If you spend even a little bit of time in church,

  76. you would probably hear this word faith quite a bit.

  77. Christians are people of faith is a common phrase.

  78. We must live by faith is another.

  79. If you're not a Christian here this morning,

  80. maybe you're friends with Christians

  81. and you've heard Christians say that

  82. we must believe in Jesus.

  83. But what does believing actually look like?

  84. Is it just believing that Jesus existed

  85. as a historical person?

  86. And what does faith actually look like?

  87. Today, we are in the seventh

  88. out of an eight-part sermon series

  89. on the book of Numbers,

  90. the fourth book of the Bible.

  91. Numbers is all about God rescuing his people

  92. out of slavery in Egypt

  93. and bringing them into the promised land,

  94. the land flowing with milk and honey,

  95. the land of Canaan.

  96. But before entering the promised land,

  97. Israel goes through a long journey

  98. in the wilderness.

  99. It's a striking illustration

  100. of the Christian life.

  101. Once, we too were slaves to sin.

  102. But now God has rescued us,

  103. given us a new life,

  104. a new worldview,

  105. a new hope,

  106. a new future.

  107. But before we get to glory,

  108. before we see Jesus face to face

  109. on that special day,

  110. we too are wandering

  111. and going through

  112. our own little wilderness.

  113. And that wilderness,

  114. this journey,

  115. has its ups and downs,

  116. temptations and uncertainties,

  117. brokenness and suffering.

  118. And life often does feel like

  119. being in the wilderness.

  120. For some more background on numbers,

  121. numbers can be broken down

  122. into three sections.

  123. The first section,

  124. chapters 1 to 10,

  125. is this epic buildup.

  126. It's the bottom of the map there.

  127. At Mount Sinai,

  128. God speaks and provides

  129. clear instructions for Israel

  130. as to how to live well

  131. with God and with each other

  132. on the way to the journey,

  133. on the way to Canaan,

  134. the promised land.

  135. The second section,

  136. chapters 11 to 25,

  137. Israel leaves Sinai

  138. and is on the move.

  139. And here,

  140. we've seen story after story

  141. of God's people rebelling

  142. against Him,

  143. complaining,

  144. grumbling,

  145. wanting to go back to Egypt,

  146. outright rejecting God,

  147. shaking their fist at God.

  148. At the heart of it,

  149. what drove this rebellion

  150. was unbelief

  151. in here,

  152. in their heart.

  153. Israel did not believe

  154. in the promises of God.

  155. And the third and final section

  156. of Numbers

  157. is from chapters 27 to 36.

  158. And connecting the second

  159. and the third sections

  160. is a sort of bridge,

  161. which is Numbers 26,

  162. the second census.

  163. We didn't read it today.

  164. Right before today's reading.

  165. And if you recall,

  166. back in chapter 1,

  167. the very beginning of Numbers,

  168. God instructs Moses

  169. to count every male

  170. above the age of 20,

  171. and that number came

  172. to about 600,000,

  173. including women and children.

  174. Israel was about 2 million

  175. at the beginning

  176. of the journey

  177. in the wilderness.

  178. But by chapter 26,

  179. about 38 years later,

  180. most of the old generation

  181. had died out

  182. in the wilderness

  183. because of their unbelief.

  184. And so this second census

  185. in Numbers 26

  186. counts the new generation

  187. of God's people.

  188. And so as we look now

  189. at this third and final section

  190. of Numbers,

  191. today and next week,

  192. Israel has clocked in

  193. close to 40 years

  194. of desert wandering,

  195. and now they stand

  196. on the plains of Moab,

  197. right on the border

  198. of the promised land.

  199. And now the big question is,

  200. what will the new generation

  201. be like?

  202. Will they be a copy

  203. of the old generation,

  204. those with unbelieving

  205. and hardened hearts,

  206. whose bodies were buried

  207. in the wilderness

  208. because of unbelief?

  209. It's kind of like

  210. at the company you work at.

  211. The old management

  212. were not very good,

  213. created a bad culture,

  214. and they basically

  215. ran the company

  216. into the ground.

  217. But fortunately,

  218. they've retired,

  219. and the new generation

  220. has stepped up,

  221. and now they're leading

  222. the organization.

  223. And the question is,

  224. what will the new generation

  225. be like?

  226. So as we open

  227. this third section

  228. of Numbers,

  229. we'll look at

  230. these two passages

  231. today that center around

  232. these five daughters

  233. of Zelophehad.

  234. These two related stories

  235. serve as bookends

  236. of the third

  237. and final section

  238. of Numbers,

    Numbers 27 chapter mention

  239. chapters 27 and 36.

  240. This is a deliberate move

  241. by the author of Numbers

  242. to put a spotlight

  243. on these women

  244. as great examples

  245. of the new generation.

  246. In many ways,

  247. these two passages

  248. are mirror images

  249. of one another,

  250. with the first

  251. leading to the second.

  252. both passages

  253. have three components.

  254. First,

  255. family members

  256. from the tribe

  257. of Joseph

  258. approach Moses

  259. with a petition

  260. related to land inheritance.

  261. Second,

  262. God, through Moses,

  263. responds and agrees

  264. with both petitions.

  265. And then third,

  266. after granting

  267. each petition,

  268. God codifies

  269. these rulings

  270. into permanent

  271. statutes and rules.

  272. Kind of like God

  273. uses these examples

  274. as case law.

  275. Let's look at

  276. these passages now.

  277. In the first one,

  278. number 27,

  279. the five daughters

  280. of Zelophehad,

  281. Machla, Noah,

  282. Hogla, Milcah,

  283. and Terza,

  284. approach Moses

  285. with their petition.

  286. Let's look at our Bibles

  287. in chapter 27,

  288. verses 3 and 4.

  289. They say,

  290. Our father died

  291. in the wilderness.

  292. He was not among

  293. the company of those

  294. who gathered themselves

  295. together against the Lord

  296. in the company of Korah,

  297. but died for his own sin.

  298. And he had no sons.

  299. Why should the name

  300. of our father

  301. be taken away

  302. from his clan

  303. because he had no son?

  304. Give to us

  305. possession

  306. among our father's brothers.

  307. Our father has died.

  308. He wasn't part

  309. of that particular group

  310. led by Korah

  311. that shook their fist

  312. against God,

  313. rose up against God,

  314. and as a consequence,

  315. the ground swallowed them up

  316. and they were buried

  317. right away.

  318. But we admit,

  319. our father was

  320. of the old generation

  321. who did not believe

  322. in the promises of God.

  323. He did not believe

  324. that God would bring us

  325. into the promised land,

  326. and because of

  327. father's unbelief,

  328. he died in the wilderness.

  329. But we're not like

  330. our father's generation.

  331. We believe

  332. in the promises of God,

  333. that God will carry us

  334. into the promised land.

  335. The daughters believed,

  336. but something was

  337. in their way,

  338. and this was the catalyst

  339. that drove their petition.

  340. Again,

  341. part of the reason

  342. for the second census

  343. in the previous chapter

  344. was so that

  345. land could be allocated

  346. according to the size

  347. of each tribe.

  348. Larger tribes

  349. were allocated

  350. a bigger amount of land,

  351. and smaller tribes

  352. were allocated

  353. a smaller amount of land.

  354. But because Israel

  355. was not yet

  356. in the promised land,

  357. land inheritance laws

  358. were still being worked through.

  359. More clarity

  360. was still needed

  361. as to how the laws

  362. would be implemented

  363. as they were still theoretical

  364. and not yet put

  365. into a real-life scenario.

  366. It's like when we first

  367. considered moving here

  368. to, moving Watermark

  369. here to Viva.

  370. We began some

  371. preliminary discussions

  372. with our landlord

  373. on preliminary terms

  374. by which we may move here,

  375. but nothing was finalized

  376. nor legalized

  377. until we signed

  378. a tenancy agreement.

  379. And so when the five daughters

  380. approached Moses

  381. and Israel's leaders

  382. in the current draft

  383. understanding

  384. of land inheritance laws,

  385. only sons would share

  386. in land inheritance.

  387. The expectation

  388. was that daughters

  389. would marry

  390. into land ownership

  391. if they got married

  392. on their husband's side.

  393. Now the five daughters

  394. did not have a problem

  395. with this.

  396. What their petition

  397. was about

  398. related specifically

  399. to their own family.

  400. Our father has died

  401. because he has no sons.

  402. Our father's allocated land,

  403. the land allocated to him

  404. as his inheritance

  405. will now go to his brothers

  406. and our father's descendants.

  407. us,

  408. and if we get married,

  409. possibly our children

  410. and our children's children

  411. and so on and so forth,

  412. our descendants,

  413. we will lose

  414. our inheritance forever.

  415. Imagine your parents,

  416. they have a treasured heirloom,

  417. maybe a piece of jewelry

  418. or a watch,

  419. you know,

  420. that Patac Philippe commercial

  421. where you've got to hand

  422. that thing down.

  423. Your parents give that to you

  424. and they say,

  425. pass it down to your children,

  426. which you want to do,

  427. you want to pass it down

  428. for many generations to come

  429. but somehow you lose it.

  430. Moses brings the petition

  431. to God

  432. and amazingly,

  433. God responds.

  434. Can you imagine,

  435. you think about that,

  436. God responds

  437. to the petition

  438. directly.

  439. The daughters of Zelophehad

  440. are right.

  441. You shall give them

  442. an inheritance.

  443. Transfer the inheritance

  444. of their father

  445. to them.

  446. And then in the next

  447. three verses,

  448. 8 to 11,

  449. God takes this case study

  450. and commands it

  451. into permanent law

  452. for all Israel

  453. going forward.

  454. The man dies,

  455. has no sons,

  456. inheritance goes to daughters.

  457. Has no daughters,

  458. goes to his brothers.

  459. No brothers,

  460. goes to his uncle

  461. and so on and so forth.

  462. Now we get to chapter 36

  463. and this is where

  464. it gets a bit spicy.

  465. The statue and rule

  466. that God had just

  467. put in place

  468. where daughters

  469. would inherit land

  470. if the father

  471. had no sons

  472. has caused a stir

  473. among other members

  474. of the family,

  475. other members

  476. of the tribe.

  477. In chapter 36,

  478. the members

  479. of the clan of Gilead

  480. who are likely

  481. the second cousins

  482. of the five daughters,

  483. they approach Moses.

  484. They're also part

  485. of the new generation

  486. and they approach Moses

  487. with their own petition.

  488. Look at chapters 36

  489. verses 2 and 4.

  490. Essentially,

  491. they come and they say,

  492. if our second cousins,

  493. these five daughters,

  494. if they marry men

  495. in another tribe,

  496. the tribe of Judah,

  497. a different tribe,

  498. then that land

  499. which was supposed

  500. to be ours

  501. for our tribe

  502. to inherit,

  503. the tribe of Joseph,

  504. that would be transferred

  505. to a different tribe

  506. and our tribe's

  507. land ownership

  508. over a long period

  509. of time will shrink.

  510. What happens?

  511. Again,

  512. God responds,

  513. verse 5,

  514. the tribe of the people

  515. of Joseph is right.

  516. The five daughters

  517. can marry

  518. whom they think best.

  519. Only they shall marry

  520. within the clan

  521. of the tribe

  522. of their father.

  523. And then God goes on

  524. and commands this

  525. into a rule

  526. and statute.

  527. Okay,

  528. everyone with me?

  529. That was a lot of narrative.

  530. No?

  531. So does like confused?

  532. Sorry.

  533. Chat later.

  534. So what does this,

  535. what does all this narrative

  536. tell us

  537. about the new generation?

  538. What does this tell us

  539. about the new generation?

  540. They had faith.

  541. They believed God

  542. would honor his promise

  543. and deliver them

  544. into the land.

  545. That is why in faith

  546. they asked for an inheritance.

  547. Let's compare them

  548. to the old generation.

  549. Back in chapter 11,

  550. what happened back then?

  551. They grumbled

  552. and complained

  553. for they hated

  554. the manna

  555. that God provided.

  556. They preferred

  557. the combination

  558. of slavery

  559. plus cucumbers

  560. versus freedom

  561. plus manna.

  562. Chapter 14,

  563. when they heard

  564. about giants in Canaan,

  565. they cried out,

  566. God,

  567. why would God

  568. take us out of Egypt

  569. just to kill us

  570. in the desert?

  571. Chapter 16,

  572. the men,

  573. led by Korah,

  574. they rose up,

  575. they shook their fist

  576. against God.

  577. They wanted

  578. to overthrow Moses.

  579. In spite of all

  580. God had done for them,

  581. rescuing them

  582. from slavery,

  583. sustaining them

  584. in the wilderness,

  585. they did not believe

  586. that God would honor

  587. his promise.

  588. You see,

  589. the old generation,

  590. they had no faith.

  591. And this is in spite

  592. of the fact

  593. that they were Israelites,

  594. covenant members

  595. of God's chosen people,

  596. descendants of Abraham,

  597. God's friend,

  598. circumcised.

  599. On the surface,

  600. they looked pretty good.

  601. If you asked,

  602. they would have said,

  603. yeah,

  604. we're people of faith.

  605. But numbers shows us

  606. the old generation

  607. had no faith.

  608. It's a mirror

  609. into our own lives.

  610. We can attend church,

  611. join a CG,

  612. even read the Bible

  613. and pray.

  614. And when the sun

  615. is shining high,

  616. when we're making money,

  617. getting married,

  618. having children,

  619. when our health is good,

  620. yeah,

  621. we believe God is good.

  622. But in the wilderness,

  623. when life gets uncomfortable,

  624. and it always does

  625. at some point,

  626. when storms come

  627. and the future

  628. is a bit cloudy,

  629. we too may be

  630. full of unbelief.

  631. We too may realize

  632. we actually have no faith.

  633. But here we have

  634. these five young women

  635. of the new generation,

  636. women of great faith

  637. as they held on

  638. to the promises of God

  639. and looked to their inheritance.

  640. But faith is not

  641. just some passive idea.

  642. They didn't just sit back

  643. and observe and wait.

  644. Faith is active.

  645. They took steps forward.

  646. So what were some marks

  647. or signs

  648. of their faith?

  649. Remember,

  650. at this very point

  651. in Numbers,

  652. Israel is camped

  653. on the plains of Moab,

  654. still in the wilderness,

  655. and as she looks

  656. into Canaan,

  657. those giant enemies

  658. are still there.

  659. And these are not like

  660. the giants

  661. from the movie Shrek.

  662. The Bible describes

  663. in detail

  664. the weakness

  665. and the violence

  666. of the people

  667. of Canaan.

  668. They would burn

  669. their own children

  670. as sacrifices

  671. to their false gods.

  672. Only by the hand

  673. of the sovereign God

  674. could Israel

  675. defeat her enemies.

  676. And yet,

  677. she couldn't just

  678. stand still.

  679. The new generation

  680. would have to go in

  681. and take the land.

  682. The men of Israel

  683. had to physically move in

  684. and face their enemies.

  685. And to do all this,

  686. all those

  687. in the new generation,

  688. including the five daughters

  689. of Zelophehad,

  690. had to have

  691. great courage.

  692. But the daughters

  693. also needed courage

  694. not just to enter Canaan,

  695. but to face Moses

  696. and their own people

  697. as well.

  698. Remember the challenge

  699. at home?

  700. Their father's inheritance

  701. would go to their uncles.

  702. The daughters

  703. and their descendants

  704. would lose their inheritance

  705. forever.

  706. Can you imagine

  707. being in their situation?

  708. They were not like

  709. the older generation

  710. who died for their unbelief.

  711. The daughters,

  712. they were faithful

  713. young ladies.

  714. They believed God

  715. would carry them

  716. into the land.

  717. They wanted to safeguard

  718. their inheritance

  719. for generations to come.

  720. That's why they asked

  721. for a possession.

  722. But life is complicated

  723. and this obstacle

  724. is now standing

  725. in their way.

  726. And so they took

  727. a bold and courageous step

  728. in front of all God's people

  729. and directly to God's

  730. chosen representative,

  731. Moses.

  732. Not just any leader.

  733. Remember in Numbers 12,

  734. God said,

  735. to prophets,

  736. I make myself known to them

  737. in a vision or in a dream,

  738. but not with Moses.

  739. With Moses,

  740. I speak mouth to mouth,

  741. clearly,

  742. not in riddles,

  743. and he beholds

  744. the form of the Lord.

  745. In my very first job

  746. when I was 23 years old,

  747. I met the CEO

  748. of the bank

  749. that I worked at

  750. and I met him

  751. and shook his hand.

  752. I didn't ask him

  753. for any land or anything.

  754. I was so nervous

  755. meeting him.

  756. The daughters were meeting

  757. God's appointed CEO

  758. and yet they approached Moses.

  759. Give to us a possession

  760. among our father's brothers.

  761. What is your reaction

  762. to the petition

  763. by the daughters?

  764. Do they seem

  765. greedy?

  766. Self-centered?

  767. Should they read

  768. the room better?

  769. How dare they question

  770. God's prophet Moses?

  771. Or,

  772. are they taking

  773. a bold and courageous step

  774. to grab hold

  775. of what God

  776. had promised them?

  777. To grab hold

  778. of what God

  779. had promised their family,

  780. their clan,

  781. their tribe?

  782. Are they stepping out

  783. at great risk

  784. of being rebuked

  785. by Moses

  786. and Israel's leaders

  787. to take hold

  788. of the promise

  789. that God made

  790. to Israel's forefathers?

  791. As a brief aside,

  792. isn't this

  793. a wonderful illustration

  794. that in the Bible

  795. women

  796. and young women

  797. at that

  798. could petition

  799. God directly

  800. bypassing

  801. social norms

  802. where in ancient times

  803. and perhaps

  804. even today,

  805. women would have

  806. to keep quiet

  807. or perhaps go

  808. through a clan member

  809. or a tribe member

  810. and not go directly

  811. to God

  812. through Moses?

  813. I think it's a very

  814. encouraging word today

  815. for the ladies

  816. at Watermark.

  817. Your voice is important.

  818. The five daughters

  819. took that step.

  820. They didn't grumble.

  821. They didn't complain.

  822. They didn't feel

  823. sorry for themselves.

  824. They didn't try

  825. to overthrow

  826. the leadership of Moses.

  827. They did not shake

  828. their fist at God.

  829. They believed

  830. in the promises

  831. of God

  832. and they took

  833. an active

  834. and risky step

  835. and that took

  836. some serious courage

  837. because one mark

  838. of faith

  839. is courage.

  840. Throughout the Bible,

  841. every individual

  842. who labored

  843. for God

  844. exhibited

  845. faith-led courage.

  846. Moses

  847. leading God's people

  848. out of Egypt.

  849. Ruth

  850. caring for her

  851. mother-in-law

  852. Naomi

  853. in a foreign land.

  854. How about

  855. all the disciples

  856. of Jesus

  857. following him

  858. amidst

  859. great persecution?

  860. How about

  861. for you?

  862. How about

  863. for you today?

  864. Where is God

  865. calling you

  866. to act

  867. with faith-driven

  868. courage?

  869. At work?

  870. Standing up

  871. against unethical

  872. business practices?

  873. Speaking up

  874. to protect

  875. those who are

  876. oppressed

  877. that can't

  878. speak up

  879. for themselves?

  880. Sharing the gospel

  881. even though

  882. we don't know

  883. how our friend

  884. or loved one

  885. will respond?

  886. See,

  887. one mark

  888. of faith

  889. is courage.

  890. What is another

  891. mark of faith?

  892. Well,

  893. in the second

  894. passage

  895. in chapter 36,

  896. it's now

  897. the second

  898. cousin's turn

  899. to make

  900. their petition.

  901. They petition.

  902. God agrees

  903. with it.

  904. And in verse 6,

  905. God commands

  906. the daughters

  907. of Zelophehad.

  908. You can marry

  909. whom you think

  910. best,

  911. but your husband

  912. must be

  913. of the same

  914. clan

  915. as your father.

  916. No more

  917. marrying

  918. outside your

  919. tribe.

  920. I wonder

  921. if the daughters

  922. struggled

  923. with this

  924. command,

  925. given the

  926. pool of

  927. potential

  928. husbands

  929. would have

  930. been diminished

  931. quite a bit.

  932. The math

  933. looked a lot

  934. worse.

  935. 11 out of

  936. 12 tribes

  937. were no

  938. longer

  939. in the

  940. pool.

  941. Well,

  942. how do

  943. they respond?

  944. In verse

  945. 10,

  946. the daughters

  947. of Zelophehad

  948. did as the

  949. Lord commanded

  950. Moses.

  951. They lived

  952. out their

  953. faith

  954. by obeying

  955. God's command

  956. so that

  957. the land

  958. that they

  959. would inherit

  960. would remain

  961. not just

  962. within their

  963. own family

  964. but within

  965. their own

  966. tribe.

  967. and through

  968. their

  969. faith-led

  970. obedience,

  971. their tribe

  972. would be

  973. blessed

  974. with

  975. inheritance

  976. from God

  977. for many,

  978. many,

  979. many generations

  980. to come

  981. because a

  982. mark of

  983. faith

  984. is obedience.

  985. Well,

  986. let's be

  987. honest.

  988. It's tough

  989. to obey

  990. God,

  991. isn't it?

  992. It's just

  993. me.

  994. It's just

  995. me,

  996. I think.

  997. I used

  998. to think

  999. that obeying

  1000. God was

  1001. like getting

  1002. handcuffed

  1003. versus

  1004. experiencing

  1005. freedom.

  1006. Following

  1007. the world's

  1008. gospel,

  1009. you know,

  1010. in the short

  1011. term at least,

  1012. it's a lot

  1013. easier.

  1014. It's much

  1015. more attractive.

  1016. But what I've

  1017. been learning

  1018. through many

  1019. mistakes and

  1020. lessons over

  1021. the years is

  1022. that what may

  1023. seem like a

  1024. limitation is

  1025. actually the

  1026. path to

  1027. blessing.

  1028. And I don't

  1029. just mean

  1030. material,

  1031. physical

  1032. blessing.

  1033. The numbers,

  1034. everything God

  1035. commanded Israel

  1036. to do,

  1037. wasn't because

  1038. God wanted

  1039. to put

  1040. handcuffs on

  1041. her.

  1042. God wanted

  1043. Israel to

  1044. stay on

  1045. course in

  1046. the wilderness

  1047. so that they

  1048. would get to

  1049. their destination,

  1050. their inheritance,

  1051. the land where

  1052. they would live

  1053. with God

  1054. and be blessed.

  1055. And today,

  1056. God urges us

  1057. to obey him,

  1058. not to remove

  1059. our fun.

  1060. By the way,

  1061. if you recall,

  1062. quite a while ago,

  1063. Kevin reminded

  1064. us that when

  1065. Jesus turned

  1066. water into

  1067. hand sanitizer,

  1068. no wine,

  1069. right?

  1070. That joke

  1071. didn't land

  1072. very well.

  1073. God urges us

  1074. to obey him,

  1075. to help us

  1076. safeguard our

  1077. inheritance,

  1078. our home

  1079. in heaven.

  1080. You see,

  1081. in the wilderness

  1082. of life,

  1083. we'll have good

  1084. days and bad

  1085. days and ups

  1086. and downs.

  1087. There will be

  1088. complications,

  1089. disappointments,

  1090. and temptations.

  1091. Through faith-driven

  1092. obedience,

  1093. God carries us

  1094. through to

  1095. receive our

  1096. inheritance.

  1097. Living a life,

  1098. honoring God,

  1099. finishing well,

  1100. meeting Jesus

  1101. face to face,

  1102. that is what it

  1103. means to be

  1104. blessed.

  1105. The writer of

  1106. Hebrews reminds

  1107. us in 4 verse

  1108. 8,

  1109. for Joshua,

  1110. Moses' successor,

  1111. had given them

  1112. rest.

  1113. God would not

  1114. have spoken of

  1115. another day

  1116. later on.

  1117. See,

  1118. Joshua would

  1119. ultimately guide

  1120. the new generation

  1121. into the promised

  1122. land.

  1123. But the promised

  1124. land was never

  1125. the final destination.

  1126. There will be

  1127. another day

  1128. where Christians

  1129. will inherit

  1130. our eternal

  1131. home and

  1132. finally find

  1133. rest.

  1134. And like a

  1135. will which is

  1136. only enforced

  1137. upon death,

  1138. our inheritance

  1139. in heaven is

  1140. only possible

  1141. because of the

  1142. death of Jesus

  1143. Christ on the

  1144. cross.

  1145. It's through

  1146. him.

  1147. Christ alone

  1148. that we can

  1149. receive our

  1150. inheritance.

  1151. Let's not be

  1152. like the old

  1153. generation who

  1154. recalled the

  1155. people of God,

  1156. but in fact

  1157. they had no

  1158. faith and did

  1159. not finish well.

  1160. Let's keep our

  1161. eyes on the

  1162. certainty of

  1163. God's promises.

  1164. Remind yourselves

  1165. about God's

  1166. promises daily by

  1167. reading your Bible.

  1168. Pray for more

  1169. understanding.

  1170. Teach these

  1171. promises to your

  1172. children so they

  1173. too may inherit

  1174. promises.

  1175. Share God's

  1176. promises to your

  1177. friends who may

  1178. not know him

  1179. yet.

  1180. And today if

  1181. you're here and

  1182. you're not yet a

  1183. follower of Jesus,

  1184. this inheritance that

  1185. we're speaking about,

  1186. the eternal inheritance

  1187. to Jesus is open

  1188. to you as well.

  1189. It's really open to

  1190. you.

1191. Come talk to me or

  1192. Colin or another

  1193. elder or leader.

1194. We'd love to talk to

  1195. you about receiving

  1196. your inheritance.

  1197. Okay, so what does

1198. all of this mean for

  1199. us here today?

  1200. Well, maybe some of

  1201. us think that living

  1202. by faith means that

1203. it's all on our own

  1204. shoulders.

1205. It's all up to us.

  1206. We just have to

  1207. persevere and grit

  1208. our teeth.

  1209. It's true that the

  1210. Bible never says,

  1211. the Bible never says

  1212. the wilderness of

  1213. life will be easy.

  1214. But consider this.

1215. This is sort of what

  1216. living by faith is

  1217. like.

  1218. You're standing at

  1219. Central Pier and you

  1220. need to swim across

  1221. Hong Kong Harbor.

  1222. It looks impossible,

  1223. it's so far.

1224. But you take the step

  1225. to ease into the

  1226. water.

  1227. You start swimming.

  1228. It takes courage,

  1229. what you do.

  1230. It's tough.

1231. But as you focus on

  1232. the destination,

  1233. which is TST,

  1234. we're going to have

  1235. a delicious dinner

  1236. with your friends,

  1237. before you know it,

  1238. you're there.

  1239. You've made it.

  1240. Or,

  1241. living by faith is

  1242. like you have a

  1243. 10,000 word paper

  1244. that you must finish

  1245. to graduate

  1246. this course.

  1247. It's so much work.

  1248. You don't know how

1249. you're going to do it.

  1250. You must sit down

  1251. in front of that

  1252. laptop and put pen

  1253. to paper.

  1254. And when you do,

  1255. you start writing

  1256. with an eye on

  1257. graduation and your

  1258. summer holiday to come

  1259. on the beach,

1260. you write a few lines,

1261. you write a few paragraphs,

1262. and before you know it,

  1263. you finish that paper.

1264. It's like in the wilderness

  1265. in Numbers.

  1266. It was tough.

  1267. The Israelites

  1268. didn't have a stable home.

  1269. They lived in tents.

  1270. They weren't in control

  1271. of the basic necessities

  1272. like food or water.

1273. They had to rely on God.

  1274. But the new generation,

  1275. they kept their eyes

1276. on the promises of God.

  1277. And time and again,

  1278. God carried her through.

  1279. We too, today,

  1280. must take steps

  1281. by faith,

  1282. with courage,

  1283. and obedience,

  1284. remembering that Jesus

  1285. has already done everything.

1286. And as we trust God,

1287. by the power of his spirit,

1288. he will carry us through.

1289. As Paul reminds us in Romans,

1290. he who did not spare

  1291. his own son,

1292. but gave him up for us,

1293. how will he not also

  1294. with him graciously

  1295. give us all things?

  1296. So church,

1297. where is God calling you today

1298. to take that step of faith,

  1299. to live by faith,

  1300. with courage,

  1301. and obedience?

  1302. We're all unique

  1303. and different,

  1304. facing different challenges

  1305. and obstacles

1306. in the wilderness of life.

  1307. Here are just

  1308. four application questions

  1309. for us to consider.

  1310. First,

  1311. if you take stock

  1312. of your daily routine,

  1313. would you admit

  1314. that you've been cramming

  1315. everybody and everything

  1316. into your schedule,

  1317. but Jesus,

  1318. he's actually very much

  1319. secondary in your life.

1320. What does it look like

  1321. if by faith

  1322. and obedience

  1323. you reprioritize

  1324. your life

  1325. to put God first?

  1326. Or for singles,

  1327. like with the daughters

  1328. of Zelophehad,

  1329. within God's people,

  1330. the church,

  1331. the possible marriage partner

  1332. seems limited,

1333. and you see more possibilities

  1334. outside church.

  1335. In light of this,

  1336. what does it mean

  1337. to protect your inheritance

  1338. through faith

  1339. and obedience

  1340. in relationships?

1341. Or maybe you have tension

  1342. with a friend,

  1343. a CG member,

  1344. or a family member.

  1345. You're tempted

  1346. to walk away

  1347. and not deal

  1348. with that conflict.

  1349. You want to distance

  1350. yourself from them

  1351. and not properly

  1352. care for them.

1353. What does living by faith

  1354. with courage

  1355. and obedience

  1356. look like?

  1357. And finally,

1358. perhaps you have a friend

  1359. who's going through

  1360. a tough time

  1361. who doesn't know Jesus.

  1362. You feel led

  1363. to share the gospel

  1364. with them,

  1365. but you're worried

  1366. that your friend

1367. may think less of you.

1368. How is God calling you

  1369. to have faith-led courage

  1370. to share your inheritance

  1371. with your friend?

  1372. In closing,

  1373. two books later,

1374. in the book of Joshua,

  1375. the new generation

  1376. of Israel,

  1377. those that had faith,

  1378. finally enter

  1379. the promised land.

  1380. And in Joshua 17,

  1381. the five daughters

  1382. of Zelophehad,

  1383. they are mentioned

  1384. one last time

  1385. in the Bible.

1386. Now in the promised land,

  1387. they approach Joshua

  1388. and Israel's leaders

  1389. and remind them

  1390. of the promise

  1391. that God made them

  1392. in number 27.

  1393. And in Joshua 17,

    Joshua 17:4

  1394. verse 4,

  1395. the Bible says,

  1396. according to the mouth

  1397. of the Lord,

  1398. God gave them,

  1399. the daughters,

  1400. an inheritance

  1401. among the brothers

  1402. of their father.

  1403. God made good.

  1404. God made good

  1405. on the promise

  1406. he made

  1407. to the five daughters

  1408. of Zelophehad.

  1409. They would receive

  1410. their inheritance

  1411. and pass it on

  1412. for many generations

  1413. to come.

  1414. God always honors

  1415. his promises.

  1416. And so,

  1417. Watermark,

  1418. as we journey

  1419. through the wilderness

  1420. of life,

  1421. with all the ups

  1422. and downs,

  1423. let's do this

  1424. as a community.

  1425. Let's fix our eyes

  1426. on our inheritance,

  1427. heaven with Jesus.

1428. And like the new generation

  1429. of God's people,

  1430. may the promise

  1431. of our inheritance

  1432. embolden us

  1433. to live with courageous

  1434. and obedient faith.

  1435. Let's pray together.

  1436. Father,

  1437. let's pray.

  1438. Thank you,

  1439. Father,

  1440. for speaking to us

  1441. today through your word.

1442. Thank you for the entire

  1443. book of Numbers

  1444. and all the examples

  1445. that you have

  1446. shared with us

  1447. to guide us

  1448. and lead us,

  1449. to warn us

  1450. and to encourage us.

  1451. I do pray,

  1452. God,

  1453. that as we

  1454. continue on

  1455. in the service,

  1456. may your spirit

  1457. be working in us,

  1458. illuminate our hearts,

  1459. help us to digest,

  1460. understand what you

1461. want to say to us

  1462. today.

  1463. May we,

  1464. Watermark,

  1465. be a people

  1466. with faith-led

  1467. courage and obedience,

  1468. God.

  1469. Not like the old

  1470. generation

  1471. who suffered

  1472. from unbelief.

  1473. May we be people

  1474. who believe

  1475. in the promises

  1476. of God.

  1477. and thank you

  1478. for your son.

  1479. You can only believe

  1480. in the promises,

1481. we only have a promise

1482. of God because of you,

  1483. Jesus.

  1484. So thank you

  1485. for your son

  1486. as we continue

  1487. the service.

  1488. Help us to fix

  1489. our eyes on him,

1490. to love and trust him.

  1491. In Jesus' name,

  1492. amen.

  1493. Amen.
