  1. Even just hearing this first chapter and a half, we're beginning to understand what makes Nehemiah such a great book.

  2. He's a fascinating figure, and we get wonderful personal insights into his life.

  3. And in so many ways, we are seeing the glory and the greatness of our God.

  4. It's a wonderful book.

  5. It's part the memoirs of Nehemiah himself.

  6. We get that sense that we're reading the private diary of a man of God as he is tasked with rebuilding the city of Jerusalem.

  7. So he's going to do that physically, but also morally and spiritually.

  8. The name Nehemiah means God will comfort.

  9. And God has comforted his people, offering them hope and restoration in giving them this leader, Nehemiah.

  10. So it's part memoirs.

  11. It's also part prayer diary.

  12. As we spend a few weeks in the book of Nehemiah, many times we will meet this man of God on his knees in prayer,

  13. seeking God's glory and the good of his kingdom.

  14. It's also, I think, these chapters are part of portrait gallery,

  15. because we're going to meet various faces of Nehemiah along the way.

  16. This man who's been raised up for the task of spiritual reformation,

  17. we will see him in various roles with various responsibilities,

  18. and all the time under the rule and guidance of God.

  19. Maybe it's helpful to ask, why are we studying it together?

  20. So this book, it dates from 445 BC.

  21. So it's pretty ancient.

  22. And we might find ourselves wondering,

  23. why are we studying this ancient book about the rebuilding of an ancient city?

  24. Well, at one level, at the local level,

  25. the answer is that since, I guess since January,

  26. as church elders, leaders here,

  27. we've been praying about, we've been thinking through,

  28. we've been reflecting on and working towards a development plan.

  29. Seeking the ongoing renewal of God here within Becclew,

  30. seeking a vision for coming years.

  31. And there's so many helpful things for us as leaders,

  32. but so many things for all of us that we can learn together in this wonderful book.

  33. But more broadly, what will Nehemiah help us to learn together?

  34. Let's look out for four things as we go week by week through this book.

  35. First of all, I think Nehemiah will teach us to pray.

  36. And as the church, we always need this.

  37. So we hear him worship.

  38. We hear him confess sin.

  39. We hear him asking God for help.

  40. We hear him pray for the ongoing renewal of the kingdom of God.

  41. So the church needs to be a praying people.

  42. The book of Nehemiah also teaches us the importance of contending for the gospel.

  43. It reminds us, like so many books of the Bible, that opposition is normal.

  44. We met some opposition at the end of our reading, chapter 2, verse 10.

  45. But as we go through the weeks, we'll come to see that the battles that Nehemiah faces,

  46. sometimes they're external, sometimes also they're internal.

  47. And the book of Nehemiah reminds us to expect opposition and trouble

  48. and to be ready and willing to contend for the cause of the Lord Jesus.

  49. And as we do so, to put our trust in God himself.

  50. To understand that we have a God who is totally committed to his glory

  51. and to his people and to the good of his kingdom.

  52. Another thing that becomes apparent as we look at the book of Nehemiah

  53. is he teaches us that the preaching of God's word

  54. is central to the life of God's people.

  55. The high point of this book is literally a high point.

  56. In chapter 8, we are going to meet Ezra.

  57. And he's going to proclaim God's word.

  58. And he's going to explain God's word from a high platform.

  59. And that in itself reminds us that as the people of God,

  60. we always need to be hearing and to be receiving God's word read and preached.

  61. And one other thing I think we can be looking out for in the story of Nehemiah,

  62. and we'll see it a lot next week.

  63. The book teaches us that renewal,

  64. the ongoing renewal of God's kingdom,

  65. its shared responsibility.

  66. This is very much an all-hands-on-deck kind of a book.

  67. We get to see a lot of Nehemiah, this great servant leader,

  68. but we're also going to hear about the responsibility of all God's people.

  69. This is a book where the church is seen as a body

  70. working together, struggling together for the glory of God

  71. and the progress of the kingdom.

  72. So we can watch out for those highlights as we go through the next few weeks.

  73. But here we are, chapter 1, verse 1, to chapter 2, verse 10.

  74. Three things for us to see.

  75. First of all, the problem facing Nehemiah.

  76. Look at the first four verses,

  77. and we discover that Nehemiah here in Susa,

  78. so he's in Iran at the moment,

  79. and he hears a report about the Jewish remnant who've survived the exile.

  80. And what's he told?

  81. Those who survived the exile are back in the province.

  82. They're in great trouble and disgrace.

  83. The wall is broken down,

  84. and Jerusalem gates have been burned with fire.

  85. The British prime minister at the outbreak of World War II

  86. was a chap called Neville Chamberlain.

  87. And Neville Chamberlain had a small pocket diary,

  88. which a few years ago went on display to the public.

  89. Look, the day that Britain entered World War II

  90. was the 3rd of September, 1939.

  91. And on that day, we have a diary entry from Neville Chamberlain.

  92. Do you know what he wrote?

  93. He wrote, war declared.

  94. And that was it.

  95. This huge moment for the nation,

  96. this huge moment for the world,

  97. we get the fact, but we don't get any insight into,

  98. what did Chamberlain feel at that moment?

  99. What emotions was he going through?

  100. Contrast that with verse 4,

  101. with Nehemiah's private diary.

  102. When I heard these things,

  103. I sat down and wept.

  104. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed

  105. before the God of heaven.

  106. He discovers the trouble facing Jerusalem,

  107. facing the people of God,

  108. and he is deeply affected.

  109. So let's ask ourselves briefly, why?

  110. Why is he affected?

  111. What's the problem?

  112. Well, at a practical level, as we've just heard,

  113. the survivors of the exile,

  114. who maybe about 15 years or 20 years ago,

  115. at the time of Ezra,

  116. had been sent back from Persia to Jerusalem,

  117. they're living in times of great trouble.

  118. There's also the remnant who survived the exile,

  119. the weak and the unimportant people,

  120. and they are part of this disgrace

  121. that's being felt within the city.

  122. The city is in ruins.

  123. The walls and the gates are broken down,

  124. and they're on fire.

  125. There's no security.

  126. There's no stability.

  127. There's no sense of honor.

  128. We will recognize that they are being exposed

  129. to their enemies,

  130. and they're being exposed to mockery.

  131. So that's what Nehemiah hears about.

  132. But in his thinking, he's going deeper,

  133. because he understands that beyond the physical,

  134. there's also a spiritual problem here.

  135. Nehemiah is someone who has a deep concern

  136. for God's people and for God's glory.

  137. God's people here are in a low state,

  138. a place of weakness.

  139. Remember, Jerusalem is the city that represents

  140. the rule of God,

  141. the presence of God,

  142. the glory of God on this earth.

  143. So when it's in ruins,

  144. God's reputation stands somewhat in ruins.

  145. It is significant that God's kingdom

  146. is in a weak state.

  147. It is a cause of deep distress

  148. that while Ezra was sent back

  149. with that task of restoring the walls

  150. and the temple,

  151. that building project has now been halted.

  152. It has stalled because of enemies

  153. and because of the royal decree from Persia.

  154. So we meet in the first instance,

  155. Nehemiah,

  156. as a true servant leader of God.

  157. And he is deeply moved

  158. by the state of the church.

  159. And remember where he is right now.

  160. He's not there in Jerusalem among the ruins.

  161. He's in Iran.

  162. He's in a palace.

  163. He's in a place of honor

  164. and comfort and security.

  165. And he could easily have said,

  166. that's not my problem.

  167. But he loves his God

  168. and he loves God's church.

  169. He knows that God is glorious

  170. and he longs for that glory

  171. to be on display in the world.

  172. He feels it deep within his guts

  173. that God is dishonored.

  174. And so this sacrificial servant,

  175. he weeps

  176. and then he works.

  177. And as we'll see,

  178. the first work he does is to pray.

  179. Now right at the outset,

  180. I want to ask ourselves

  181. a question this morning,

  182. perhaps a question to reflect on

  183. through the day,

  184. through this week.

  185. What is it that I am most passionate about?

  186. Now if you're a Christian here today,

  187. you know as I know instinctively

  188. what the answer should be.

  189. But what is the evidence of our lives?

  190. Or to put it slightly differently,

  191. how do we feel

  192. about the low state of the church

  193. in our nation?

  194. As Keith was leading us in prayer.

  195. As we think about the situation

  196. in our city or in our church,

  197. that the progress seems slow,

  198. that God's honor is held in low regard.

  199. Do we feel it?

  200. Sometimes I think it's all too easy,

  201. again,

  202. to go back to that idea of idolatry.

  203. Sometimes we can find it really easy

  204. to be most passionate

  205. about our own comfort, perhaps.

  206. Or our own success,

  207. whether that be in our career

  208. or in our studies

  209. or even thinking for our children.

  210. We might even put our sports team

  211. ahead of the glory of God

  212. and the advance of His kingdom.

  213. To look at Nehemiah's posture,

  214. weeping, fasting, praying,

  215. reveals his passion,

  216. the glory of God

  217. and the cause of the gospel.

  218. He hears the report

  219. and it's as if he can sense

  220. that the smoking walls

  221. and the city in ruins

  222. and what that represents

  223. about God's honor

  224. and that brings him to his knees.

  225. Let me ask each one of us individually

  226. and for us as a church

  227. about our posture

  228. and about our passion.

  229. So we sit here in Edinburgh

  230. and it's very different, isn't it?

  231. There's no smoking ruins.

  232. In fact, we live in a wonderfully

  233. beautiful city,

  234. a great city.

  235. We came back from holiday

  236. and the cherry blossoms are there

  237. and the meadows,

  238. the sun's shut.

  239. It's a wonderful city.

  240. Visitors flock

  241. and don't want to leave.

  242. But let me ask,

  243. can we see beneath the surface?

  244. To recognize that for the people

  245. who live here,

  246. that without Jesus,

  247. their lives in this city

  248. is spiritual ruin and rubble.

  249. Do we recognize

  250. that there are many people around us

  251. and they are hurting

  252. and they are confused,

  253. they're troubled,

  254. they're heading for a lost eternity,

  255. many of them without even realizing it?

  256. Will we pray?

  257. Do we pray?

  258. To the God who sees,

  259. who knows,

  260. who cares.

  261. To the God who is powerful

  262. and to the God

  263. who is passionate

  264. about His glory

  265. and about salvation.

  266. So that's the problem

  267. that we see.

  268. Second thing we hear

  269. is the prayer

  270. of Nehemiah.

  271. So we said Nehemiah

  272. is like a portrait gallery.

  273. Nehemiah is a man

  274. of many faces.

  275. We will see him

  276. often as a leader.

  277. Sometimes we'll see him

  278. inspecting and exploring.

  279. Sometimes we'll see him

  280. engaged in buildings.

  281. Sometimes we'll see him

  282. helping the poor.

  283. But it's so significant

  284. that our first portrait

  285. is of Nehemiah,

  286. the man of prayer.

  287. You search church history

  288. and you will discover

  289. that those who are most passionate

  290. for God's glory,

  291. those who are most used

  292. in God's kingdom,

  293. will be those who are

  294. most passionately committed

  295. to seeking God's help

  296. and seeking God's honor

  297. in prayer.

  298. And so we have the privilege

  299. this morning

  300. of taking a page

  301. from Nehemiah's

  302. personal prayer diary.

  303. And what do we discover

  304. in this page?

  305. We discover here is a man

  306. of God who knows his God.

  307. And he knows his Bible.

  308. And he knows God's promises.

  309. And he appreciates

  310. that he lives under

  311. God's providence.

  312. And all of that is here

  313. in his prayer.

  314. And so as we spend

  315. just a few minutes

  316. looking at this prayer,

  317. my prayer for us would be

  318. that Nehemiah

  319. would be teaching us

  320. in our day

  321. how to pray also.

  322. So we begin there

  323. at verse 5

  324. and we come to see

  325. that we pray

  326. in part

  327. to worship

  328. our God.

  329. We don't rush in

  330. with our shopping list.

  331. We give God glory.

  332. Look at how

  333. Nehemiah begins.

  334. Lord, the God of heaven,

  335. the great and awesome God

  336. who keeps his covenant

  337. of love with those

  338. who love him

  339. and keep his commandments.

  340. It's good to remember

  341. who we pray to.

  342. The God who made

  343. everything that we see.

  344. The God who is great

  345. and awesome

  346. but the God who is also

  347. loving

  348. and keeps his covenant

  349. and enters into

  350. personal covenant

  351. relationship

  352. with his people.

  353. And so we see

  354. that we have

  355. this privilege.

  356. We're invited

  357. into a personal

  358. relationship

  359. with the powerful

  360. God of the universe.

  361. That's a great motivator

  362. for prayer, I think.

  363. And what we see

  364. from Nehemiah's prayer

  365. is this reminder

  366. that God is both

  367. awesome

  368. and he's approachable.

  369. That he is both

  370. a God to be feared

  371. and honored

  372. and a God

  373. who is faithful.

  374. And wonderfully

  375. we know through Jesus

  376. we're invited

  377. to call this God

  378. our Father in heaven.

  379. To know that as his people

  380. we are never denied access.

  381. To know that when we pray

  382. we come to the one

  383. with all resources

  384. for whom nothing

  385. is impossible.

  386. So we praise God

  387. that we get to pray.

  388. We pray to worship.

  389. But we also pray

  390. to confess our sin.

  391. That's there, isn't it?

  392. In verses 6 and 7.

  393. I confess the sins

  394. we Israelites

  395. including myself

  396. and my father's family

  397. have committed against you.

  398. And again, notice this.

  399. There is no hint

  400. of those guys over there.

  401. They're the problem.

  402. There's the people

  403. over in Jerusalem.

  404. It's we.

  405. There's that shared sense

  406. of guilt over sin.

  407. Nehemiah's family

  408. because they're part

  409. of that society.

  410. He recognized

  411. they're part of the problem.

  412. And the problem

  413. there in verse 7

  414. we have acted

  415. very wickedly

  416. towards you.

  417. We have not obeyed

  418. the commands, decrees

  419. and laws you gave

  420. your servant Moses.

  421. He confesses disobedience.

  422. He confesses

  423. dishonoring God.

  424. He understands

  425. that by breaking

  426. God's law

  427. the people of God

  428. they're causing damage

  429. to God's honor.

  430. They're causing damage

  431. to the work

  432. of God's kingdom.

  433. And so he confesses sin.

  434. He's just worshipped

  435. and recognized

  436. how awesome God is.

  437. And when we rightly view

  438. God's awesome holiness

  439. isn't that so often

  440. when we become

  441. so aware of our own sin

  442. and guilt

  443. and awfulness.

  444. That the holiness

  445. of God

  446. rightly seen

  447. so often exposes

  448. our own hypocrisy.

  449. That huge gap

  450. that can exist

  451. between

  452. here are the truths

  453. that I believe

  454. but here's the life

  455. that I'm practicing.

  456. That's one of the reasons

  457. why it's so important

  458. for us every week

  459. as we worship

  460. to confess our sin

  461. together.

  462. To acknowledge

  463. that we are all guilty

  464. before God

  465. that we all stand

  466. in need of His grace

  467. and forgiveness

  468. and there is grace

  469. and forgiveness

  470. to be found

  471. in the gospel.

  472. So we pray to worship

  473. we pray to confess sin

  474. and Nehemiah also shows us

  475. that we pray

  476. to claim God's promises

  477. to claim God's promised help.

  478. That's there in verses

  479. 8 to 10.

  480. Look at how he begins

  481. remember the instruction

  482. you gave your servant Moses

  483. and then he takes

  484. his prayer towards

  485. that key text

  486. of Deuteronomy chapter 30

    Deuteronomy 30:1–5

  487. verses 1 to 5

  488. where God makes the promise

  489. that when His people

  490. even if they've walked

  491. so far away from His ways

  492. if they will return

  493. then God will restore

  494. God will have compassion

  495. God will bring His people

  496. back to Himself.

  497. And as Nehemiah prays

  498. he remembers Scripture

  499. and he knows

  500. these are God's own words.

  501. This is God's covenant commitment.

  502. And so Nehemiah takes God

  503. at His word

  504. and he claims

  505. the promise of God

  506. found in the Bible.

  507. And it's the same

  508. in verse 10.

  509. They are your servants

  510. and your people

  511. whom you redeemed

  512. by your great strength

  513. and your mighty hand.

  514. So part of God's covenant faithfulness

  515. was in His great act of rescue.

  516. We might think of the story

  517. of the Exodus

  518. or we might think of

  519. the return of the exiles.

  520. And so Nehemiah puts before God

  521. his own covenant commitment

  522. and he trusts

  523. that God will be faithful

  524. to His character

  525. and to His word

  526. even though

  527. His people have been unfaithful.

  528. He trusts in a God

  529. who will be faithful

  530. to His promise

  531. and to His people

  532. through thick and thin.

  533. Now a couple of observations

  534. as we seek with God's help

  535. that Nehemiah would encourage us

  536. in prayer.

  537. First is this.

  538. Remember the power

  539. of praying

  540. together.

  541. Look at verse 11.

  542. We could easily miss this.

  543. Lord, let your ear

  544. be attentive

  545. to the prayer

  546. of this your servant.

  547. Okay, we get that.

  548. And to the prayer

  549. of your servants

  550. who delight

  551. in revering your name.

  552. What are we being told?

  553. Nehemiah is praying

  554. with other people.

  555. There are others

  556. who are committed

  557. day by day

  558. maybe even hour by hour

  559. to God's kingdom

  560. to God's glory

  561. to God's will.

  562. And there's a power

  563. in that.

  564. There's a goodness

  565. to that.

  566. As a local church

  567. we must do

  568. the Lord's work

  569. and we must do it

  570. in the Lord's way.

  571. And how do we do

  572. the work of God

  573. together?

  574. Fundamentally

  575. as we pray.

  576. We must be

  577. praying together.

  578. Plans,

  579. strategies

  580. absolutely are

  581. so important

  582. and we'll see it

  583. but without prayer

  584. we're missing

  585. the key component.

  586. Now the great example

  587. I think in the Bible

  588. of the church of God

  589. praying together

  590. is the book of Acts.

  591. It has been said

  592. that the early church

  593. in the chapters

  594. of Acts

  595. it sounds just like

  596. an extended prayer meeting.

  597. Whatever is going on,

  598. whatever God is working,

  599. whatever need

  600. is required,

  601. the people are praying.

  602. So if we're here today

  603. and we feel perhaps

  604. sad

  605. or dissatisfied

  606. or discouraged

  607. about what's going on

  608. in the world

  609. or about the state

  610. of the church

  611. in Scotland

  612. or if you're concerned

  613. for your local church

  614. here,

  615. if there are people

  616. on your heart

  617. and you're hungry

  618. for them to know

  619. life with God,

  620. to know the love

  621. of God,

  622. this is where we start

  623. and we never shift

  624. from this,

  625. we must devote

  626. ourselves

  627. to praying together.

  628. There is power

  629. in that

  630. and just as a sidebar,

  631. just to remind us,

  632. we pray

  633. as a church

  634. every Sunday

  635. at 5pm

  636. through there

  637. and we pray

  638. on a Wednesday

  639. at lunchtime online

  640. and we pray

  641. on Wednesdays.

  642. Matters.

  643. So remember

  644. the power

  645. of praying together.

  646. Secondly,

  647. to find encouragement

  648. from Nehemiah,

  649. remember

  650. who we pray

  651. to.

  652. Remember

  653. that we pray

  654. to a powerful

  655. loving father

  656. who loves

  657. to hear

  658. his children

  659. pray.

  660. This is one

  661. father

  662. and you will

  663. never find

  664. a do not disturb

  665. on his office

  666. door.

  667. Our father

  668. in heaven

  669. will never

  670. shush us

  671. because he's

  672. busy doing

  673. something else.

  674. Remember

  675. that we are

  676. praying to a

  677. God

  678. who is far

  679. more committed

  680. to his glory

  681. and to his

  682. kingdom

  683. than you and I

  684. will ever be.

  685. He has

  686. redeemed us

  687. by way of

  688. sending his son

  689. Jesus to die

  690. on the cross

  691. for us

  692. and then he's

  693. raised them up

  694. on the third day.

  695. He will not

  696. let that be

  697. for nothing.

  698. He is

  699. committed

  700. to building

  701. his church.

  702. And remember

  703. that we pray

  704. to the great

  705. God who has

  706. made great

  707. promises.

  708. We get so

  709. many promises

  710. and we know

  711. that we hold

  712. on to them

  713. lightly.

  714. We receive

  715. so many

  716. offers,

  717. so many

  718. emails and

  719. we wonder

  720. is this a

  721. scam,

  722. this sounds

  723. too good

  724. to be true.

  725. That is

  726. never the

  727. case with

  728. God's promises

  729. in his word

  730. and by faith

  731. we are

  732. invited to

  733. claim them.

  734. So we need

  735. to know

  736. God's word

  737. and to pray

  738. God's word

  739. as we claim

  740. those promises

  741. and as we

  742. come to

  743. know the

  744. God of glory

  745. who will

  746. build his

  747. church,

  748. who must

  749. be faithful

  750. to his

  751. covenant,

  752. for whom

  753. nothing is

  754. impossible,

  755. then we have

  756. the motivation

  757. to pray

  758. and to keep

  759. praying.

  760. So that's the

  761. second thing.

  762. So we've seen

  763. the problem,

  764. we've heard

  765. the prayer,

  766. now we

  767. recognize in

  768. those first

  769. verses of

  770. chapter 2

  771. the planning

  772. of Nehemiah.

  773. It was a

  774. president of

  775. the United

  776. States,

  777. Benjamin Franklin,

  778. who was

  779. credited with

  780. saying,

  781. if you fail

  782. to plan,

  783. you plan

  784. to fail.

  785. If you spend

  786. any time in

  787. business or

  788. management circles,

  789. you will know

  790. all about,

  791. I am sure,

  792. planning and

  793. development and

  794. it makes sense,

  795. it makes sense

  796. at a personal

  797. level.

  798. We have to

  799. plan for

  800. our meals,

  801. we have to

  802. plan as

  803. pupils,

  804. and as

  805. students if

  806. we're revising

  807. for exams,

  808. we have to

  809. plan our

  810. time to

  811. make room

  812. for exercise

  813. perhaps or

  814. family devotions,

  815. and we need

  816. to plan for

  817. life within a

  818. local church.

  819. Nehemiah is

  820. both a great

  821. man of prayer

  822. and a great

  823. planner too.

  824. And one

  825. aspect of

  826. planning that

  827. I want us

  828. to really see

  829. from Nehemiah

  830. is that it's

  831. one thing to

  832. make a plan,

  833. maybe that's

  834. quite easy.

  835. What we see

  836. from Nehemiah

  837. is the

  838. courage

  839. required to

  840. carry out

  841. a plan.

  842. Think about

  843. that at

  844. sort of a

  845. personal level.

  846. You know,

  847. you want to

  848. apply for

  849. a new job,

  850. that requires

  851. a certain

  852. amount of

  853. courage,

  854. because on

  855. the one hand

  856. you may be

  857. rejected,

  858. but on the

  859. other hand

  860. you may be

  861. successful and

  862. you have to

  863. meet a whole

  864. new load of

  865. people,

  866. learn a whole

  867. new load of

  868. skills.

  869. Maybe you have

  870. the good desire

  871. to get

  872. married,

  873. and again

  874. that's going

  875. to take

  876. courage,

  877. it's going

  878. to take

  879. courage to

  880. ask someone

  881. out,

  882. because again

  883. you may

  884. meet with

  885. rejection.

  886. Or you

  887. want a

  888. friend to

  889. know Jesus,

  890. there's courage

  891. involved in

  892. that too,

  893. to invite

  894. them along

  895. to church

  896. or to

  897. open the

  898. Bible with

  899. them or

  900. to talk

  901. to them

  902. about your

  903. faith,

  904. because again

  905. there is

  906. the prospect

  907. that that

  908. relationship

  909. changes and

  910. a person

  911. might not

  912. show any

  913. interest.

  914. the Nehemiah

  915. we meet in

  916. chapter 1 and

  917. chapter 2 is

  918. an example to

  919. us both of

  920. careful planning

  921. but also of

  922. courageous faith

  923. as he puts

  924. plans into

  925. action.

  926. But let's

  927. first of all

  928. really quickly

  929. see the

  930. careful planning.

  931. Now I'm

  932. going to

  933. presume that

  934. most of us

  935. are not

  936. familiar with

  937. the Jewish

  938. calendar system,

  939. so we might

  940. not notice,

  941. I wouldn't

  942. have noticed,

  943. that the

  944. difference

  945. between

  946. chapter 1

  947. verse 1,

  948. the date

  949. there,

  950. and chapter

  951. 2 verse 1

  952. is four

  953. months.

  954. For four

  955. months Nehemiah

  956. has been

  957. praying for

  958. God's glory

  959. and God's

  960. kingdom,

  961. but Nehemiah

  962. at the same

  963. time has

  964. also been

  965. planning.

  966. And so as

  967. we open this

  968. page of his

  969. diary we see

  970. the advanced

  971. planning that

  972. has gone

  973. into this.

  974. So as he

  975. stands before

  976. the king

  977. and as the

  978. king asks him

  979. the question,

  980. Nehemiah,

  981. what is it

  982. that you

  983. want?

  984. You clearly

  985. have something

  986. on your

  987. mind.

  988. We hear

  989. again Nehemiah

  990. praying to the

  991. God of heaven,

  992. that's his

  993. instinct,

  994. but then we

  995. see him put

  996. his plans

  997. into place.

  998. So it

  999. begins with

  1000. Nehemiah

  1001. requesting that

  1002. he be sent to

  1003. Jerusalem to

  1004. head up this

  1005. rebuilding project

  1006. and he already

  1007. has in mind how

  1008. long he thinks

  1009. that's going to

  1010. take.

  1011. And so he

  1012. makes that

  1013. request.

  1014. And then if

  1015. you look at

  1016. verse 7,

  1017. he asks for

  1018. some letters.

  1019. He wants

  1020. letters to

  1021. guarantee him

  1022. safe conduct

  1023. as he journeys

  1024. through the

  1025. kingdom.

  1026. He wants to

  1027. go with

  1028. official royal

  1029. permission.

  1030. And then look

  1031. at verse 8,

  1032. he's really

  1033. pushing things

  1034. now.

  1035. He asks for

  1036. another letter,

  1037. this time a

  1038. letter for the

  1039. man in charge of

  1040. the royal forest.

  1041. He wants a

  1042. work order to

  1043. be sent so the

  1044. king will

  1045. provide the

  1046. timber and

  1047. the building

  1048. materials at

  1049. the king's

  1050. own expense.

  1051. And then in

  1052. verse 9 and

  1053. 10, we see

  1054. the planning

  1055. involved in

  1056. that Nehemiah

  1057. wants to go

  1058. with an army.

  1059. He wants to

  1060. make a clear

  1061. signal to the

  1062. enemies of

  1063. God.

  1064. He is coming

  1065. at the king's

  1066. command and

  1067. that God is

  1068. with him in

  1069. all of this.

  1070. So there is

  1071. careful planning,

  1072. but there is

  1073. also courageous

  1074. faith going on.

  1075. This week I

  1076. came across a

  1077. definition of

  1078. courage by a

  1079. guy called

  1080. Joseph Piper.

  1081. A helpful

  1082. definition.

  1083. I think courage

  1084. is the act of

  1085. risking suffering

  1086. for the sake of

  1087. the good.

  1088. Risking suffering

  1089. for the sake of

  1090. the good.

  1091. Again, think

  1092. about it.

  1093. If we believe

  1094. an action will

  1095. bring God

  1096. glory.

  1097. If we think

  1098. that applying

  1099. for that job

  1100. will bring God

  1101. glory or seeking

  1102. that new

  1103. relationship or

  1104. talking to a

  1105. friend about

  1106. Jesus, then we

  1107. risk suffering,

  1108. someone saying

  1109. no perhaps, for

  1110. the sake of the

  1111. greater good, that

  1112. God would be

  1113. glorified.

  1114. Nehemiah shows us

  1115. the life of faith

  1116. is a life of

  1117. courage that's

  1118. committed to the

  1119. glory of God and

  1120. is willing to

  1121. suffer.

  1122. And it all

  1123. starts with his

  1124. willingness to go.

  1125. So again, just

  1126. to remember, he's

  1127. not in Jerusalem.

  1128. He's living in a

  1129. very affluent, very

  1130. comfortable, very

  1131. secure city here in

  1132. Susa in the heart

  1133. of the Persian

  1134. empire.

  1135. But he is willing

  1136. to leave behind the

  1137. comfort of the

  1138. palace for the sake

  1139. of the greater good,

  1140. God's kingdom.

  1141. He runs so many

  1142. risks as he

  1143. presents his plan

  1144. to the king.

  1145. To leave his

  1146. important job behind,

1147. to ask for a huge

  1148. amount of resources

  1149. from the king,

  1150. even to look sad

  1151. in the king's

  1152. presence.

  1153. But he risks it

  1154. for the sake of

  1155. the good.

  1156. We know

  1157. Nehemiah is a

  1158. man of faith.

  1159. He understands,

  1160. for example,

  1161. chapter 2,

  1162. verse 8,

  1163. the gracious hand

  1164. of his God

  1165. was with him

  1166. in granting him

  1167. success.

  1168. We hear it in

  1169. his prayers.

  1170. prayers.

  1171. And he is

  1172. willing to pray

  1173. and to plan

  1174. and to act,

  1175. not knowing how

  1176. things are going

  1177. to turn out.

  1178. But he knows

  1179. God is on the

  1180. throne,

  1181. not at the end

  1182. of the day,

  1183. this man,

  1184. Arctic Xerxes.

  1185. And so he acts

  1186. with courageous

  1187. faith.

  1188. And I wonder

  1189. if there is a

  1190. pattern there

  1191. for us to

  1192. follow.

  1193. To be ready

  1194. to pray,

  1195. to be ready

  1196. to make plans,

  1197. and then to have

  1198. the courage to put

  1199. plans into action

  1200. for the glory of

  1201. God,

  1202. even when we

  1203. don't know how

  1204. things will turn

  1205. out.

  1206. You'll think

  1207. about that

  1208. in our own

  1209. context here.

  1210. We never

  1211. know when

  1212. we pray.

  1213. Will God

  1214. use us

  1215. to be the

  1216. answer to

  1217. those prayers?

  1218. We don't

  1219. know.

  1220. Will God

  1221. be pleased

  1222. to use us

  1223. individually

  1224. or collectively

  1225. to advance

  1226. the gospel

  1227. in some way?

  1228. We don't

  1229. know in

  1230. God's wisdom

  1231. will Beclood

  1232. be used

  1233. for future

  1234. generations

  1235. to reach

  1236. this city

  1237. with the

  1238. good news

  1239. of Jesus.

  1240. But we

  1241. seek to

  1242. act in

  1243. courageous

  1244. faith.

  1245. We pray,

  1246. we plan,

  1247. and we act

  1248. on the plan.

  1249. So as a

  1250. church,

  1251. we've been

  1252. encouraged to

  1253. pray for

  1254. ten people

  1255. who don't

  1256. know and

  1257. love Jesus.

  1258. Part of

  1259. that praying

  1260. may likely

  1261. involve us

  1262. then having

  1263. to act,

  1264. to be ready

  1265. to love

  1266. them,

  1267. to serve

  1268. them,

  1269. to speak

  1270. to them,

  1271. to ask

  1272. their questions

  1273. and to seek

  1274. to answer

  1275. them.

  1276. Many of

  1277. us,

  1278. we pray

  1279. for new

  1280. families

  1281. in this

  1282. local community

  1283. to have

  1284. the chance

  1285. to hear

  1286. about Jesus

  1287. and to hear

  1288. about Jesus

  1289. through us

  1290. and through

  1291. our church.

  1292. So we pray

  1293. about that,

  1294. but we also

  1295. need to ask

  1296. God to guide

  1297. us and to

  1298. plan and to

  1299. think how

  1300. best can we

  1301. reach out

  1302. and welcome

  1303. people in.

  1304. We perhaps

  1305. find ourselves

  1306. praying about

  1307. a new

  1308. generation of

  1309. leaders within

  1310. the church.

  1311. That's a good

  1312. prayer.

  1313. But at the

  1314. same time,

  1315. we have to

  1316. make plans

  1317. today to

  1318. train,

  1319. to mentor,

  1320. to disciple

  1321. those God

  1322. has brought

  1323. to us and

  1324. will bring to

  1325. us in the

  1326. future.

  1327. And so the

  1328. life of

  1329. planning and

  1330. praying and

  1331. courageous faith

  1332. involves us

  1333. praying,

  1334. your kingdom

  1335. come,

  1336. your will be

  1337. done,

  1338. and it involves

  1339. us asking and

  1340. making plans.

  1341. What can I

  1342. do?

  1343. What can we

  1344. do for the

  1345. sake of God's

  1346. kingdom, for

  1347. the sake of

  1348. Jesus today,

  1349. this week,

  1350. this year?

  1351. And being

  1352. ready to act

  1353. with courage,

  1354. to risk

  1355. suffering for

  1356. the sake of

  1357. God's glory and

  1358. the spiritual

  1359. good of

  1360. others.

  1361. And so as we

  1362. begin to look at

  1363. the life of

  1364. Nehemiah,

  1365. the servant

  1366. leader,

  1367. there's a lot

  1368. that we can

  1369. learn, but

  1370. especially as

  1371. we look beyond

  1372. to the

  1373. greatest of

  1374. all servant

  1375. leaders, to

  1376. the Lord

  1377. Jesus Christ,

  1378. the sacrificial

  1379. servant, the

  1380. one who is

  1381. willing to leave

  1382. behind the

  1383. comfort of

  1384. his palace, to

  1385. leave behind the

  1386. glory of

  1387. heaven, to

  1388. come into

  1389. this world, to

  1390. carry out God's

  1391. great plan of

  1392. salvation.

  1393. And remember

  1394. Jesus, the

  1395. servant leader,

  1396. he too would

  1397. weep over

  1398. Jerusalem.

  1399. spiritually lost

  1400. and ruined.

  1401. Jesus is the

  1402. one who would

  1403. pray for his

  1404. father's glory

  1405. and his

  1406. father's glory

  1407. in the salvation

  1408. of sinners and

  1409. the building up

  1410. of God's

  1411. kingdom.

  1412. Jesus, who in

  1413. love will

  1414. suffer and die

  1415. for our

  1416. greatest good,

  1417. that we by

  1418. faith might be

  1419. brought into the

  1420. kingdom of God.

  1421. God.

  1422. He is the

  1423. leader we look

  1424. to and with

  1425. his help we

  1426. pray, we plan,

  1427. we act for

  1428. his glory, for

  1429. the glory of

  1430. God, for the

  1431. renewal and

  1432. spiritual reformation

  1433. that we seek here

  1434. and the clux here

  1435. in ourselves.

  1436. Thank you so much

  1437. that we have
