  1. I seek your prosperity.

  2. So if you have your Bibles, perhaps you can turn back with me to John chapter 17, page

    John 17 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. But before we get into that, just to think about the process of learning a language.

  5. So we have just come back from another holiday in France, and every time we go to France,

  6. I come away with that desire to learn the language well, to get beyond the basics of, you know,

  7. shop, cafe, French.

  8. But I know I'll never commit myself to the time.

  9. But it's always that chance to ask the question, how does language learning work?

  10. How is it possible for us to pick up a language?

  11. Think about how that works for babies.

  12. How do babies learn to speak?

  13. It's a remarkable thing, I think.

  14. And we are told it's through listening.

  15. Lots of listening, especially listening to parents, but perhaps also to older siblings.

  16. And over time, all those random sounds begin to form into ideas.

  17. Over time, a baby is able to give a basic one-word answer to certain prompts.

  18. And then there's the process of learning to repeat those words that are heard over and over.

  19. And slowly, an ability to use language is being formed.

  20. As Christians, how do we learn the language of prayer?

  21. I would suggest, in many ways, it's a similar process of slow formation.

  22. Of us listening to our Father.

  23. Listening to God speaking to us in His Word.

  24. We learn to pray in part by listening.

  25. Listening to what God says in the Bible, because then we know what He cares about, what He wants.

  26. Perhaps we also listen to others who are mature and who have grown up in prayer.

  27. So we listen, especially we listen to God's Word, and we learn to speak God's Word back to Him.

  28. And if that's the case, slow formation, listening in, and learning to repeat,

  29. then that's especially true when we come to a section like John 17.

  30. Because what we have here is nothing less than the Son of God in prayer.

  31. In prayer to His Father.

  32. Here is the man of faith, the man of prayer,

  33. and we get to learn a pattern and priorities for our prayers from Jesus.

  34. And wonderfully, we discover as we listen in to Jesus,

  35. we find that all the time, Jesus is praying for us.

  36. So our plan for the next few weeks is to work really slowly through this prayer,

  37. often known as the high priestly prayer of Jesus.

  38. We'll keep coming back to what is Jesus praying for.

  39. We'll look at certain themes each week.

  40. And we will especially remind ourselves who it is who is praying.

  41. Because I think there is for us as Christians a particular comfort and encouragement

  42. as we recognize Jesus, our mediator, is praying for us.

  43. He's also our model teaching us how to pray.

  44. We're going to go slowly and reflectively.

  45. Martin Luther, the reformer, when someone asked him,

  46. Mr. Luther, help me to pray,

  47. what he would do with that person would be to encourage biblical meditation.

  48. To take some words of the Bible, perhaps a verse or a couple of verses,

  49. and to reflect on them so as to bring one's thoughts and one's feelings to converge on God.

  50. And so my hope and prayer for us week by week is something similar.

  51. That as we spend time meditating on some of these ideas that Jesus prays for,

  52. that we'll be helped in our own prayer lives.

  53. We'll find ideas and priorities from God's Word to fuel our own praying.

  54. But especially we'd be helped as we consider and as we hear

  55. the praying life of Jesus, the Son of God.

  56. So that's where we're going to begin.

  57. We're going to begin thinking about Jesus, the man of prayer.

  58. This is, you know, in John's Gospel.

  59. And it's a portrait that we find within John, and especially Luke,

  60. that Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah, the chosen King, was a man of prayer.

  61. And we know that he devoted considerable time, sometimes entire nights, to prayer.

  62. And we understand as we scan through his life that he made it a priority to spend time with his Father.

  63. Here is Jesus, in human form, taking on a true humanity.

  64. He could receive God's mercy.

  65. He could receive God's wisdom.

  66. And so he prayed.

  67. He wanted it.

  68. He needed it.

  69. We see as we read the Gospels a pattern for his life at key points in his life.

  70. Facing the pressures of a busy ministry.

  71. Facing the pressures of the devil when tempted.

  72. Having to choose disciples.

  73. He would take time to pray.

  74. So we understand from the Gospel writers that the Son of God prays.

  75. And that's highlighted for us here in John 17.

  76. This prayer takes place shortly after what we now know as the Lord's Supper or the Last Supper.

  77. So this is perhaps just hours before his arrest, before his suffering, before his death.

  78. This is after he has given extended teaching to his disciples designed for their comfort.

  79. Designed to strengthen them.

  80. He turns to pray.

  81. He closed his teaching, which runs from 14 to 16.

  82. In 1633, I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace.

  83. In this world you will have trouble.

  84. But take heart.

  85. I have overcome the world.

  86. And after Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and he prayed.

  87. All of this is happening in the presence of his disciples.

  88. Jesus knows he will shortly return to the Father.

  89. And that return will take him by the way of suffering and death on the cross before his resurrection,

  90. before his ascension.

  91. And what we find in John 17 is that Jesus prays well aware that the cross will happen,

  92. but he looks beyond.

  93. He prays about the outcome of the cross.

  94. And so he begins by praying, knowing that the cross will bring glory for the Father and glory to the Son.

  95. We hear him praying protection for his followers, for the believers.

  96. We hear him praying about the mission of the church, his followers.

  97. So we hear the Son of God pray.

  98. And we hear him pray as our great high priest.

  99. Back in the Old Testament, the high priest had a number of roles.

  100. A principal role would be to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.

  101. But the high priest would also carry the names of God's people on his heart right into God's presence in the temple,

  102. and especially as he went into the Holy of Holies on the Day of Atonement.

  103. And especially the book of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is our great high priest.

  104. And we know that Jesus, when he goes to the cross, he is offering himself as the great, the perfect, the once-for-all sacrifice for sin.

  105. But we also know that Jesus takes up this role of the priest in that he prays for us.

  106. That he carries the names of his people on his heart.

  107. That he brings the people of God right into the presence of our Father in heaven.

  108. So we are sitting here and we are in the very throne room of God.

  109. Because of the ministry of Jesus, our great high priest.

  110. Now why does it matter that the Gospels highlight that Jesus was a man of prayer?

  111. Let me suggest three reasons for our encouragement.

  112. First, when we think about the words of James in chapter 5, verse 16,

  113. as he closes his letter, he reminds his readers that the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

  114. And James at that point, he takes us to the story of Elijah.

  115. Elijah prayed before King Ahab, and there was no rain as a sign of God's displeasure.

  116. And then three years later, he prayed and there was rain.

  117. Or we might think of Moses.

  118. The number of times that Moses stood in the gap praying for rebellious Israel.

  119. And his prayer was powerful and effective.

  120. Jesus is the righteous man.

  121. So we have the guarantee that his prayer does contain nothing less than the power of God.

  122. That Jesus' prayer must be effective.

  123. Recognize that when we come to John 17.

  124. If you're here and you're a follower of Jesus, that your confidence lies in this.

  125. That the Father does hear and he has answered this prayer of Jesus.

  126. Another way I think it matters for us that Jesus is a man of prayer.

  127. Go back to a different Old Testament story.

  128. Think about Joseph.

  129. Book of Genesis.

  130. Joseph, remember, had been sold into slavery.

  131. But eventually, after many years, he ends up in the palace of Pharaoh.

  132. And there's that point where his brothers come looking for food.

  133. And then his brother and his father come looking to settle down in Egypt.

  134. And what does Joseph do?

  135. From his position of influence, he speaks in favor of his father and his brothers.

  136. Jesus is our greater than Joseph.

  137. He is our friend in the core of heaven.

  138. He speaks for us.

  139. And we live every day under the benefit of his prayer for us, of his constantly praying for us.

  140. Here's another reason why it matters that Jesus was a man of prayer.

  141. We see, and John's gospel brings this out, Jesus always did the will of God.

  142. And by extension, Jesus always prayed the will of God.

  143. And he encouraged us to do likewise in the Lord's prayer.

  144. Your kingdom come, your will be done.

  145. Even in Gethsemane, as Jesus anticipated, what it would be like to become the sin bearer,

  146. to go under the curse of God, to suffer the judgment in our place.

  147. He prayed, not my will, but yours be done.

  148. His life lined up with the Father's will at all points.

  149. And his prayers do likewise.

  150. And because Jesus' prayer always lines up with his Father's will, his praying is heard.

  151. His prayer is answered.

  152. And again, we as the church, we enjoy the fruit of that prayer being answered.

  153. I've been reading, there's a collection of sermons by the Puritan Anthony Burgess on John 17.

  154. And he describes the prayer of Jesus as the key of heaven that opens heaven for us.

  155. And what becomes clear as we get into John 17 is that our salvation,

  156. our sanctification, our growing in holiness, our eternal security,

  157. they all rest safe and secure in the prayers of Jesus for us being answered.

  158. So it matters that Jesus pray.

  159. So Jesus was the man of prayer.

  160. Let's think secondly about the matters of prayer that Jesus picks up.

  161. But before we get into the text, some of you I know will have read the autobiography of John G. Payton.

  162. He was the missionary to the New Hebrides, now known as Vanuatu.

  163. And he tells in his autobiography the story really of his father as a great man of prayer.

  164. That every day, regardless of the working responsibilities of his father,

  165. every day, regardless of the company that might be in the house,

  166. there was always a time of family worship in which John, in which his family,

  167. in which the church, in which the nation and the nations would be prayed for regularly and fervently.

  168. In fact, his autobiography tells the story of the most notorious woman in their neighborhood

  169. who came dramatically to faith in Jesus.

  170. And she said she came to faith in Jesus because she would often pass under the window of the Payton's house

  171. and she heard John Payton's father multiple times praying for her.

  172. He didn't know she was there, but he prayed for her and he prayed for many.

  173. Now, I use that example just to remind us that there is power in prayer

  174. and there is power when someone prays with us and someone prays for us.

  175. Many of us will know that privilege of having someone sat with us and prayed with us and for us.

  176. There's power in that.

  177. Well, how much more when we come to understand that the one who prays for us

  178. is none other than the eternal Son of God and the High King of Heaven?

  179. What weight there is then to his words

  180. and when we consider that his prayers are answered.

  181. So, as I say, each week what we're going to do is we're going to slow down

  182. and we're going to think about different ideas.

  183. But this week, just by way of overview, we're going to see three of the matters that Jesus picks up in his prayer

  184. and why each of these matters to you and to me.

  185. For those of us who are here and we're believers in the Lord Jesus,

  186. let me encourage us to listen in with joy as we recognize Jesus prays for us.

  187. Remember verse 20,

  188. My prayer is not for them alone.

  189. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.

  190. But maybe you're here today and you're not a Christian.

  191. Let me encourage you to ask God to help you to listen in with a sense of longing

  192. that it could be true of you that Jesus, the Son of God,

  193. prays for you and is concerned for your eternal good.

  194. That you might pray for the gift of faith.

  195. That this prayer would be true for you also.

  196. Three things that Jesus prays for his people.

  197. First, Jesus prays for your salvation.

  198. Look at how his prayer begins.

  199. Father, the hour has come.

  200. Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you.

  201. For you granted him authority over all people

  202. that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

  203. Now, what's this glory that Jesus prays for?

  204. There's many aspects to it.

  205. It's certainly the glory of God's mission of salvation being accomplished.

  206. It's the glory of God being worked out as the eternal plan of salvation

  207. is now being worked out in history

  208. through the life, death, and resurrection of his Son, the Lord Jesus.

  209. Jesus also understands that every time a person turns from sin to trust in Christ Jesus,

  210. glory belongs to God.

  211. We believe that we're saved by grace.

  212. It's a gift of God so that all glory in salvation belongs to our God.

  213. He also prays recognizing the gift of eternal life.

  214. What is that gift?

  215. It's that by God's grace we are brought into a personal living relationship with God.

  216. That we get to call God as our Father because Jesus has come and he's forgiven our sins,

  217. so the barrier is gone and we can be adopted in God's love.

  218. That we can know Jesus as our Savior, as our King, as our brother, as our friend.

  219. And so Jesus has come with this specific purpose to bring glory to his Father

  220. by completing the work of salvation.

  221. Jesus has come to do God's will and he did not fail.

  222. And we hear him praying for our conversion,

  223. for our life of holiness,

  224. that we would be saved to the end.

  225. And that prayer of Jesus, it cannot fail.

  226. John chapter 6, he'll never lose any that the Father gives to him.

    John 6 chapter mention

  227. Some of us, as parents, some of us as kids, we have stories of getting lost.

  228. We were talking about this in our community group this week.

  229. Sometimes kids get lost in shops or in busy cities.

  230. Sometimes kids even get lost in churches.

  231. But we have the wonderful promise in the prayer of Jesus

  232. that our almighty, all-wise Father in heaven

  233. never loses any of his children.

  234. He never even takes his eyes off us for a moment.

  235. So Jesus prays for our salvation.

  236. And tied to that, secondly, Jesus prays for your protection.

  237. Just to continue with the parent-child analogy,

  238. we will be familiar with this.

  239. You come to a new place,

  240. you go to a busy place,

  241. perhaps the risks are thought to increase.

  242. And if you're with young children,

  243. instinctively you'll say something like,

  244. take my hand.

  245. Verse 11, as Jesus prays,

  246. I will remain in the world no longer,

  247. but they are still in the world,

  248. and I am coming to you.

  249. Holy Father,

  250. protect them by the power of your name,

  251. the name you gave me,

  252. so that they may be one as we are one.

  253. While I was with them,

  254. I protected them and kept them safe,

  255. that name you gave me.

  256. None has been lost,

  257. except the one doomed to destruction,

  258. so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

  259. In Jesus' prayer,

  260. we have the assurance,

  261. as the people of God,

  262. that we will always be protected.

  263. That we rest safe and secure

  264. in the double grip of God the Father

  265. and God the Son.

  266. Just to remind ourselves of Jesus' words,

  267. John 6, 37.

  268. Here's assurance.

  269. All those the Father gives me

  270. will come to me,

  271. and whoever comes to me,

  272. I will never drive away.

  273. We are protected, Jesus prays,

  274. by the powerful name of God himself.

  275. We are marked as belonging to him,

  276. and we cannot be lost by him.

  277. And we see so many stories in the Old Testament

  278. of God acting for the protection of his people.

  279. Think of the story of Daniel's three friends,

  280. even there in the fiery furnace.

  281. Those held by God's power and God's goodness

  282. will not be burned.

  283. We go through life,

  284. and sometimes maybe it feels a bit like a fiery furnace.

  285. There are trials,

  286. and there are troubles,

  287. and there are temptations.

  288. But for the child of God,

  289. our protection,

  290. our eternal protection,

  291. is guaranteed.

  292. As Jesus said to his disciples

  293. in chapter 16, verse 33,

  294. those troubles that we face,

  295. they do not have the last word.

  296. They are real.

  297. We will face troubles,

  298. but we can take heart,

  299. because Jesus has overcome the world,

  300. and if we belong to Jesus,

  301. then our protection is guaranteed.

  302. So Jesus prays for our salvation.

  303. Jesus prays for our protection.

  304. And he goes beyond there to pray, too,

  305. for our future glory.

  306. One challenge that we might face

  307. in our own prayer lives

  308. is that often don't we find

  309. that our prayers can seem so narrow

  310. and limited and small and weak.

  311. And we turn to this prayer of Jesus,

  312. and we see how expansive it is.

  313. This prayer takes in the whole of our salvation.

  314. Past, present, and future.

  315. Look at verse 22.

  316. I have given them the glory that you gave me,

  317. that they may be one as we are one,

  318. I in them and you in me,

  319. so that they may be brought to complete unity.

  320. Then the world will know that you sent me

  321. and have loved them even as you have loved me.

  322. Father, I want those you have given me

  323. to be with me where I am

  324. and to see my glory,

  325. the glory you have given me

  326. because you loved me

  327. before the creation of the world.

  328. Jesus has given us glory.

  329. We are united as God's people

  330. in the love of God.

  331. And we hear the longing of Jesus

  332. as he prays that his people

  333. would be with him in glory,

  334. that we would be made like him

  335. and that we would see his glory

  336. and we'd find then all of our joy

  337. and all of our longings met.

  338. And we recognize that as Jesus prays

  339. and he prays that we'd be united in love

  340. and that we would be filled with that,

  341. that awareness of God's glory,

  342. that that's something that we experience now.

  343. That our normal, local church,

  344. by God's grace,

  345. is a preview,

  346. an imperfect preview,

  347. but a preview of that perfect,

  348. redeemed community.

  349. So that as we spend time together

  350. and as people walk in,

  351. there should be a sense of the love of God

  352. among us that binds us together,

  353. that there should be that ability

  354. to get a sight of the glory of God

  355. in our worship and in our lives.

  356. And let's recognize too

  357. something of the amazing love of Jesus

  358. in that he connects his eternal happiness

  359. to ours.

  360. His longing is that we are with him forever.

  361. There is that sense in which Jesus' joy

  362. will be incomplete

  363. until all of his people

  364. are gathered together

  365. in the new creation

  366. to enjoy his love

  367. and happiness forever.

  368. Jesus prays for us.

  369. And his prayer is wonderful.

  370. And it takes in our salvation

  371. from beginning to end.

  372. And just to remind ourselves,

  373. so we're going to keep coming back

  374. to these two ideas,

  375. to think about Jesus

  376. as our mediator.

  377. And thirdly,

  378. and this is just by way of reminding us,

  379. you know,

  380. we know that who speaks for us

  381. can be so important

  382. at different times.

  383. If we're applying for

  384. a position of some kind,

  385. a job perhaps,

  386. then the references that we get,

  387. the letters of recommendation

  388. that we can supply,

  389. they might be the difference

  390. between getting a job,

  391. a post, or not.

  392. Or if we find ourselves

  393. in a court of law

  394. and we're on trial,

  395. then we want to get

  396. the very best defense,

  397. the very best person

  398. to speak for us.

  399. And so it's true

  400. when we think about

  401. standing in the court of heaven.

  402. And here,

  403. as we listen to Jesus,

  404. we find comfort and hope

  405. as we understand

  406. that the one who speaks for us

  407. at that point in time

  408. is the one who always speaks

  409. for us now in heaven.

  410. Our Savior,

  411. our King,

  412. our brother and our friend.

  413. Recognize that as we listen

  414. to Jesus,

  415. we're listening to the God-man

  416. who prays.

  417. And so there is infinite worth

  418. and there is infinite merit

  419. in his prayers,

  420. there is an infinite value

  421. and effectiveness

  422. in his prayers,

  423. that his prayer

  424. can no more be refused

  425. than his blood could be refused.

  426. That we know

  427. that the blood of Jesus,

  428. the sacrifice of Jesus,

  429. is the basis for our acceptance

  430. into the Father's presence.

  431. Likewise,

  432. his prayers guarantee

  433. our access

  434. to our God.

  435. Our mediator

  436. is none other than

  437. the beloved Son of God.

  438. When he prays to his Father,

  439. he prays

  440. to the one

  441. who has been loved

  442. and who has loved his Father

  443. from all eternity.

  444. We know

  445. that the Father

  446. denies nothing

  447. to the Son

  448. whom he loves.

  449. We know

  450. that Jesus

  451. is the beloved Son,

  452. he is the perfect Son,

  453. and he offers up

  454. perfect prayers

  455. and those prayers

  456. are certainly

  457. answered.

  458. And the one

  459. who mediates

  460. is our great

  461. high priest.

  462. To go back again

  463. to another idea

  464. from the Old Testament,

  465. back in the Old Testament

  466. temple,

  467. the high priest

  468. when he was in

  469. the tabernacle

  470. or the temple,

  471. he would sometimes

  472. offer incense

  473. on the altar.

  474. And the smell

  475. that would go up

  476. to heaven

  477. and the smoke

  478. that would go up

  479. to heaven

  480. was a picture

  481. of God being pleased

  482. to hear the prayers

  483. of the priest

  484. on behalf

  485. of the people.

  486. Jesus' prayers

  487. are acceptable

  488. to his Father,

  489. but also,

  490. Revelation chapter 8

    Revelation 8:4

  491. verse 4,

  492. we hear this,

  493. the smoke

  494. of the incense

  495. together with

  496. the prayers

  497. of God's people

  498. went up

  499. before God.

  500. So this isn't

  501. just an Old Testament

  502. temple idea,

  503. this becomes

  504. an imagery

  505. of life

  506. in the church

  507. that our prayers

  508. like incense

  509. are going up

  510. to God,

  511. and do you know

  512. the altar

  513. for our prayers

  514. is also

  515. the Lord Jesus.

  516. It's as we pray

  517. in his name

  518. that our prayers

  519. are accepted.

  520. Not only is

  521. Jesus the high

  522. priest who

  523. prayed for us

  524. on earth,

  525. he's also the

  526. high priest who

  527. prays for us

  528. in heaven,

  529. he's also the

  530. one in whom

  531. our prayers

  532. are accepted.

  533. He perfects

  534. our prayers

  535. and he presents

  536. our prayers

  537. before our

  538. Father.

  539. Our praying

  540. needs the

  541. prayers of

  542. Jesus.

  543. And so I

  544. hope week by

  545. week we're

  546. going to

  547. recognize this

  548. truth that

  549. it's this

  550. Jesus,

  551. the eternal

  552. Son of God,

  553. the beloved

  554. Son,

  555. the great

  556. high priest,

  557. this is the

  558. one who

  559. prays for

  560. us.

  561. And when we

  562. hear him

  563. pray,

  564. we know that

  565. his prayers

  566. are accepted

  567. and answered,

  568. and so we can

  569. have confidence

  570. as he prays.

  571. And when we

  572. think about our

  573. own prayers,

  574. we acknowledge,

  575. yes, our

  576. prayers are weak,

  577. but we pray

  578. in Jesus'

  579. name,

  580. and Jesus'

  581. prayers are

  582. infinitely strong.

  583. And so we

  584. find encouragement

  585. from Jesus

  586. how to pray

  587. and to keep

  588. on praying

  589. because his

  590. praying is the

  591. foundation for

  592. our salvation,

  593. it's our

  594. security in

  595. this life,

  596. and our

  597. guarantee of

  598. eternity.

  599. And the

  600. fourth thing

  601. is to just

  602. think about

  603. Jesus offering

  604. us a model

  605. of how to

  606. pray, a

  607. great example

  608. of how to

  609. pray.

  610. And we'll

  611. come back

  612. to this

  613. week by

  614. week.

  615. As

  616. Christians,

  617. we're to be

  618. like the

  619. disciples.

  620. Remember the

  621. disciples coming

  622. to Jesus and

  623. saying, Lord,

  624. teach us to

  625. pray.

  626. We're to

  627. take the

  628. attitude of

  629. little children

  630. where we

  631. need to

  632. learn how

  633. to pray.

  634. And as

  635. we come

  636. with that

  637. kind of

  638. instinct and

  639. humility,

  640. we understand

  641. that we've

  642. been given

  643. so much to

  644. help us to

  645. pray.

  646. We've been

  647. given the

  648. whole Bible,

  649. the whole

  650. Word of

  651. God telling

  652. us about

  653. His character

  654. and His

  655. promises.

  656. We've been

  657. given the

  658. Lord's

  659. prayer as

  660. a model

  661. that we

  662. can follow.

  663. And here

  664. in John

  665. 17, we

  666. have a

  667. prayer that

  668. the Lord

  669. Jesus

  670. Himself

  671. offered.

  672. And we

  673. are invited

  674. to listen.

  675. Like

  676. children, we

  677. are invited

  678. to copy.

  679. Like

  680. children, we

  681. are invited

  682. to have our

  683. language of

  684. prayer formed

  685. from His

  686. example.

  687. Because as

  688. we listen to

  689. Jesus, we're

  690. listening to

  691. the man of

  692. faith.

  693. We're

  694. listening to

  695. the righteous

  696. man, the

  697. pattern, the

  698. example, the

  699. forerunner we

  700. follow after.

  701. And so I hope

  702. week by week as

  703. we come back to

  704. this text, we'll

  705. recognize this.

  706. If Jesus

  707. prays for

  708. something, it

  709. is good.

  710. it is God's

  711. will.

  712. So we

  713. should pray it

  714. too.

  715. So we'll

  716. find fuel

  717. every week to

  718. pray for

  719. ourselves, to

  720. pray for our

  721. families, to

  722. pray for our

  723. church, to

  724. pray for our

  725. city, and to

  726. pray for the

  727. world.

  728. So even just

  729. thinking about

  730. what we've

  731. covered, we

  732. can follow

  733. Jesus this

  734. week.

  735. Father, please

  736. will you grant

  737. eternal life to

  738. my family

  739. members and to

  740. my friends who

  741. I'm praying for,

  742. who don't as

  743. yet know Jesus

  744. as Savior.

  745. We can pray,

  746. Father, thank

  747. you for the

  748. glory of

  749. salvation that

  750. you have

  751. revealed in

  752. Jesus, but

  753. also that you've

  754. revealed in the

  755. lives of my

  756. brothers and

  757. sisters in

  758. Christ.

  759. Thank you for

  760. every example of

  761. lives transformed

  762. and being

  763. transformed.

  764. We can pray

  765. following the

  766. pattern of

  767. Jesus for

  768. others.

  769. Father, I

  770. know this

  771. person is having

  772. a hard time.

  773. Please will

  774. you protect

  775. them through

  776. their trouble.

  777. Please will

  778. you let them

  779. know that you

  780. love them and

  781. you're watching

  782. over them and

  783. you will keep

  784. them.

  785. Father, I know

  786. this person is

  787. facing suffering.

  788. This person is

  789. anticipating death.

  790. Please open the

  791. windows of heaven

  792. so they sense

  793. your coming

  794. glory and your

  795. loving commitment

  796. to keep your

  797. people from now

  798. you until

  799. eternity.

  800. So I hope this

  801. prayer is really

  802. going to help us

  803. in coming weeks

  804. and we can give

  805. thanks as we

  806. recognize that the

  807. one who offers

  808. this prayer is

  809. the one who will

  810. shortly offer up

  811. his life in our

  812. place for our

  813. sins to open up

  814. the way of heaven

  815. for us, who

  816. teaches us to

  817. pray, the great

  818. Savior who prays

  819. for us.

  820. Let's pray

  821. together now.

  822. Lord God, we

  823. thank you for

  824. this remarkable

  825. opportunity that we

  826. have to listen

  827. to Jesus

  828. praying for

  829. us.

  830. And we thank

  831. you for the

  832. privilege that we

  833. have.
