  1. Well, we're going to read together from the Scriptures of the New Testament.

  2. We're reading in Luke chapter 17, and we're reading from verse 11 to verse 19.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  3. ! Let's hear and read together in God's Word.

  4. On the way to Jerusalem, he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.

  5. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,

  6. who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying,

  7. Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

  8. When he saw them, he said to them,

  9. Go and show yourselves to the priests.

  10. And as they went, they were cleansed.

  11. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back,

  12. praising God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.

  13. Now he was a Samaritan.

  14. Then Jesus answered,

  15. Were not ten cleansed?

  16. Where are the nine?

  17. Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?

  18. And he said to him,

  19. Rise and go your way.

  20. Your faith has made you well.

  21. This is the Word of God, and to His name be the praise and the glory.

  22. All right.

  23. We are in a summer series called Questions That Jesus Asked.

  24. And I'm sure that when we announced that we were going to do this series,

  25. nobody thought of the question,

  26. Where are the other nine?

  27. It's not the most common question you think of when you ask,

  28. What are the questions Jesus asked?

  29. But this is a moving story, actually.

  30. Not a well-known story, but a moving moment in the Gospels

  31. when Jesus encounters these ten lepers.

  32. And it's not well-known, but it's so important.

  33. And there's a literary frame that Luke gives us in the passage,

  34. and it starts in verse 12, and it helps us understand it.

  35. Verse 11, I should say,

  36. He came to Jerusalem.

  37. And then in verse 12,

  38. He was met by ten lepers,

  39. but they were at a distance.

  40. And there's the word distance.

  41. Ten lepers are at a distance physically from Him

  42. at the beginning of the story.

  43. But when you get down to verse 18 at the end of the story,

  44. though they've been cleansed,

  45. nine lepers are still at a distance from Him.

  46. Only one has come any closer at all.

  47. And so there's a physical distance at the beginning

  48. because of leprosy,

  49. because of the disease and the separation that was required by law.

  50. But even after the leprosy is cleansed,

  51. nine out of ten are still very far away from Jesus at the end.

  52. And that means that Luke is trying to do what the Bible does,

  53. and that's show us that something like physical leprosy

  54. has always been meant to be a sign of a spiritual reality as well,

  55. of something going on on the inside,

  56. of a relational distance that is still there at the end of the story.

  57. I think every one of us today will know of that colleague at some point

  58. where we've worked with them for years,

  59. but we still don't really know them.

  60. And in the same way, you can sit across from the table,

  61. even from family for years,

  62. and never really have relational depth connection.

  63. So there can be physical distance,

  64. but there can be physical closeness, yet relational distance.

  65. And you have that distinction from the beginning to the end

  66. in this literary frame that we're given.

  67. Why?

  68. What's the difference?

  69. How can it be that He cleanses them from leprosy,

  70. yet they're still far from Him at the end?

  71. And Luke is trying to get us to see that that physical distance

  72. is representative of a different type of leprosy,

  73. not just physical outward leprosy,

  74. but I think He wants us to see that there's such a thing as spiritual leprosy.

  75. And when we realize that, we have to say,

  76. do I have it?

  77. Is that my disease?

  78. Is that my problem?

  79. So let's think about that,

  80. and we'll find out through looking at three things.

  81. Number one, the one that they're distant from,

  82. the person they're distant from.

  83. And then secondly, the heart of leprosy.

  84. And then finally, the leper priest.

  85. So first, who's the one that they're distant from here?

  86. In verse 11, Jesus is traveling.

  87. He's on His way to Jerusalem,

  88. and He passes between Samaria and Galilee.

  89. Now Jesus is going somewhere,

  90. and He's going somewhere on purpose.

  91. He's going to Jerusalem.

  92. And to get there takes not the normal route at all.

  93. So if you were to follow Jesus' travels towards Jerusalem at the end of His life,

  94. He doesn't make a straight line.

  95. He's kind of all over the place.

  96. It's more of a zigzag.

  97. And here, He passes between the liminal space,

  98. between the territory of the Jews and the territory of the Samaritans,

  99. the borderland, the no man's land, really.

  100. A place that nobody normally would go to as a Jew on their way to Jerusalem.

  101. And that's because there's deep ethnic animosity,

  102. the ethnic partiality.

  103. That's quite a minor way to say it, how thick and deep it is,

  104. the hatred, really, between Jews and Samaritans.

  105. Different temple, different priests,

  106. and pretty much utter separation and normal life segregation.

  107. But here, Luke says He's traveling towards Jerusalem.

  108. And that is a significant little moment

  109. because it's the third time we've been told

  110. He has owned His way to Jerusalem in Luke's gospel

  111. since this moment in chapter 9, verse 51,

  112. where we're told He set His face towards Jerusalem.

  113. So that's a moment of fulfillment from the Old Testament,

  114. Isaiah chapter 50, verse 7,

    Isaiah 50:7

  115. where it said the suffering servant,

  116. talking about a suffering servant,

  117. will one day come and set His face like flint towards Jerusalem.

  118. A weird metaphor for modern people,

  119. to set your face like flint towards something.

  120. But for an ancient person, flint is this quartz-like material

  121. that basically is unbreakable.

  122. And so He's locked in to Jerusalem.

  123. In other words, the reason this is the third mention,

  124. He's on His way to Jerusalem,

  125. is because Luke wants you to read this story,

  126. understanding that it's in the shadow of the cross.

  127. He is set on going to die for the sins of humanity.

  128. This happens in the shadow of the cross.

  129. It's the story of the cross, really, that this is leading to.

  130. And along that way, Luke has this travel motif.

  131. We saw it in the road to Emmaus.

  132. But part of his journey to Jerusalem and to the cross

  133. is this continual stopping along the way

  134. to make people who you expect to be outsiders into insiders.

  135. And the people that you think are supposed to be insiders,

  136. you find out are actually outsiders.

  137. So as soon as He says in chapter 9, verse 51,

  138. I've got my face set to Jerusalem,

  139. the next chapter is the parable of the Good Samaritan.

  140. You know, who's a good neighbor?

  141. And nobody expects Him to say,

  142. it's the Samaritan that's the good neighbor,

  143. that shows people how to love.

  144. He's constantly showing how outsiders are insiders.

  145. And that means that on His way to the cross,

  146. in the shadow of the cross,

  147. He wants you to see that the kingdom of God

  148. is different than the world expected.

  149. And the kingdom of God is upside down.

  150. It's not normal to human expectation.

  151. And He wants to bring outsiders in.

  152. There's nobody more outside than a leper.

  153. They are the outsiders of all the outsiders.

  154. The king is on his way to be thrown out of the city gate.

  155. And on his way, he wants to bring to himself

  156. people who are the most thrown out in all of the culture.

  157. And that is the Samaritan leper,

  158. the most thrown out person,

  159. the most excommunicated person in the whole culture.

  160. So in verse 12, there's a leper colony

  161. on this borderland between Samaria

  162. and the territory of Jews in Galilee.

  163. And there's 10 lepers.

  164. And they're Jews and Samaritans

  165. because even though Jews and Samaritans

  166. are separated in normal life,

  167. when you are a leper,

  168. all ethnic animosity goes away.

  169. You're cast out from society.

  170. You band together.

  171. And so these Jews and Samaritans are here together,

  172. not thinking any more about racism

  173. or ethnic partiality or anything like that.

  174. And it's because they're excommunicated.

  175. So Leviticus 13 and 14 is the background

  176. to their excommunication.

  177. It's Levitical law in the Old Testament

  178. that requires them to be cast out of the city.

  179. There's a hundred verses on leprosy

  180. in those two chapters, nearly a hundred verses.

  181. And it's important to know that leprosy

  182. is a category more than a disease in the Bible.

  183. So we think of leprosy as a disease.

  184. Leprosy is more of a category.

  185. The first house I ever lived in, in Edinburgh,

  186. had biblical leprosy.

  187. You would wipe mold off the walls in the morning.

  188. You would go to work, you would come home

  189. and the mold would be right back streaked across the walls.

  190. And in Leviticus 13, that's a house of leprosy

  191. because it's got mold.

  192. And it was to be, Leviticus 14, 45,

  193. it is to be knocked down within the camp of God

  194. in the Old Testament because of its leprosy.

  195. And the bag that I purchased

  196. because I was moving to Scotland to study

  197. and you move internationally, you buy a bag, right?

  198. A new backpack and it got leprosy.

  199. And I had to throw it away

  200. because of the first house I lived in in Scotland.

  201. So leprosy is a skin disease,

  202. different types of skin diseases,

  203. but it's also moldy houses

  204. and all sorts of things in the Bible.

  205. And that's because leprosy in the Levitical code,

  206. the God's law is like everything else

  207. in the ritual laws of Leviticus,

  208. an outward sign of an invisible reality.

  209. So leprosy is cast out of the city of God's camp.

  210. Why?

  211. Because it was symbolic,

  212. somebody literally wearing it,

  213. a house having it that says this mold,

  214. this death, this problem cannot be a part of Edenic life,

  215. the life you were made for.

  216. So in the Old Testament,

  217. the people living in the promised land

  218. were a sign of the land that was one day to come,

  219. life in the new Eden.

  220. And that meant that dead bodies

  221. couldn't be inside God's city

  222. and mold couldn't be in God's city

  223. and decay couldn't be in God's city.

  224. And that means that these lepers,

  225. it's not that they did some sin

  226. in order to get leprosy.

  227. Never.

  228. We don't believe in karma.

  229. There's no karma here.

  230. It's that leprosy is one of the chosen signs

  231. in the Old Testament

  232. of what it means as representative humanity

  233. to be in Adam,

  234. as David was talking about early.

  235. In other words,

  236. lepers stand for all of us.

  237. So spiritual leprosy,

  238. physical leprosy is a sign of the truth

  239. that all of humanity has spiritual leprosy.

  240. And so spiritual leprosy represented

  241. in physical leprosy

  242. has to be sent outside of the camp,

  243. outside of the city,

  244. outside of the village.

  245. And so these guys are excommunicated

  246. and it is a triple excommunication.

  247. As one scholar put it,

  248. it is living death.

  249. So religious excommunication,

  250. there's no temple worship.

  251. You cannot go to church.

  252. It is relational excommunication.

  253. Imagine being outside the city

  254. and seeing your family travel by,

  255. but you can never get near to them.

  256. Never a hug.

  257. They could leave food for you,

  258. but you could never cross the street

  259. to see them.

  260. And it's civic excommunication.

  261. You know, you can never go home.

  262. You can't be a part of the people

  263. that you would come from.

  264. And so in the first century rabbinic culture,

  265. leprosy had become something

  266. even more than Levitical law.

  267. It becomes such an excommunication

  268. in every way.

  269. And rabbis were famous

  270. for echoing 2 Kings 5, verse 7,

    2 Kings 5:7

  271. where Naaman, the Syrian,

  272. comes to Israel

  273. to get healed of his leprosy.

  274. And the king, he says,

  275. oh, king of Israel,

  276. tell me how to be healed from my leprosy.

  277. And the king says,

  278. who do you think I am?

  279. God?

  280. Only God can heal people from leprosy.

  281. In other words,

  282. there's nothing we can do about this.

  283. And once you go to a leper colony,

  284. the skin diseases

  285. are obviously going to spread.

  286. And so it's typically

  287. a lifetime sentence.

  288. And it was a horrific life.

  289. What do they ask for to Jesus,

  290. of Jesus?

  291. Verse 13,

  292. they say,

  293. they see him,

  294. they say,

  295. Jesus,

  296. master,

  297. give us mercy.

  298. Send us your mercy.

  299. What are they asking for

  300. when they say this word mercy?

  301. They say master.

  302. Clearly they know

  303. this guy is something different.

  304. He's a prophet.

  305. He's a master.

  306. That's kind of like saying a rabbi,

  307. a great teacher.

  308. And when they say mercy,

  309. normally a leper had to go around

  310. in the first century saying,

  311. leper,

  312. leper,

  313. unclean,

  314. unclean.

  315. So if you were to get near them,

  316. they would say unclean.

  317. And that was the signal.

  318. Get away.

  319. I can't be,

  320. I can't be talked to

  321. or communicated with

  322. or got near to.

  323. But here,

  324. when they see the master,

  325. they say,

  326. mercy,

  327. mercy.

  328. And what are they asking for?

  329. And it's clear,

  330. I think,

  331. from the context

  332. and the commentators

  333. all agree on this,

  334. that they're not saying,

  335. have mercy on me,

  336. Jesus,

  337. because I need forgiveness of sins

  338. because I'm a sinner.

  339. They're saying,

  340. give me my life back.

  341. I want to go back

  342. to my family.

  343. I want to go back

  344. to the people that I love.

  345. And that means that

  346. alienation is the wound

  347. they're crying out for.

  348. Alienation is the wound

  349. from which they say,

  350. mercy,

  351. mercy.

  352. Now,

  353. that might not be

  354. the most important thing

  355. to ask Jesus for.

  356. But,

  357. who is this one

  358. that they cry out to

  359. in mercy?

  360. I want to point out to you

  361. before we move

  362. to the main idea here.

  363. Jesus Christ

  364. is the kind of redeemer

  365. who does want to give them

  366. that kind of mercy.

  367. He is the kind of redeemer

  368. who does want to give

  369. them relief

  370. from their skin disease.

  371. He is.

  372. He does.

  373. He does want to give them

  374. their family back.

  375. He does want to put them

  376. back into the city.

  377. He does not despise

  378. that prayer,

  379. that request.

  380. No,

  381. not at all.

  382. Jesus offers

  383. cleansing deeper than skin.

  384. Absolutely.

  385. And that's very important.

  386. But,

  387. he is

  388. on his way to the cross

  389. announcing

  390. that he is indeed

  391. bringing a kingdom

  392. where there will be

  393. no skin diseases

  394. and where people

  395. will not be separated

  396. from their families

  397. because of leprosy

  398. and people will not

  399. starve anymore.

  400. And,

  401. that means that

  402. Christianity

  403. is not

  404. just concerned

  405. with your soul

  406. and it is

  407. very importantly so.

  408. But,

  409. the Christianity

  410. of Jesus Christ,

  411. your redeemer

  412. is as Sinclair Ferguson

  413. put it,

  414. the kind of redeemer

  415. that wants to give

  416. this kind of mercy

  417. to people.

  418. And so,

  419. in verse 14,

  420. he says,

  421. go show yourself

  422. to the priests

  423. and while they were

  424. going to see the priest,

  425. they were healed

  426. along the way.

  427. Now,

  428. the story should end there.

  429. It was a very,

  430. it's a very nice story.

  431. It's a,

  432. it's a great ending.

  433. He sent them

  434. even before they were

  435. ever healed,

  436. which means they had

  437. some measure of faith.

  438. This,

  439. this prophet

  440. can heal me

  441. and I'm going to go

  442. see the priest

  443. and have my,

  444. my cleanliness announced.

  445. This man is powerful

  446. over diseases.

  447. He can heal skin disease

  448. and that would have been

  449. a perfect ending.

  450. And yet,

  451. it's not the end

  452. because that's not the end

  453. of what actually happened

  454. in history

  455. and Luke doesn't want you

  456. to think that that's the end

  457. because there's something

  458. more here,

  459. something deeper

  460. to deal with here.

  461. And so,

  462. he leads us then,

  463. this leads us

  464. to the meat

  465. of the story

  466. and that's the heart

  467. of leprosy secondly

  468. in verses 15 to 18.

  469. Now,

  470. you'll see this

  471. in the passage.

  472. The word in the Bible

  473. most often used

  474. for healing leprosy

  475. is not the word healing.

  476. It's not that they were healed.

  477. It does use that word sometimes,

  478. but most often,

  479. it takes up

  480. the Old Testament language

  481. of cleansing.

  482. And so,

  483. in this passage,

  484. we're told

  485. they were cleansed.

  486. Why?

  487. Because this is ritual language

  488. from Leviticus

  489. that a priest

  490. had to cleanse his hands

  491. to enter God's presence.

  492. the word cleansing

  493. for healing of skin disease

  494. is connecting us

  495. to the religious realities

  496. that are present in it.

  497. There's a sort of idea

  498. of there's a baptism

  499. that needs to take place.

  500. And that's because

  501. the text,

  502. like all of the Bible,

  503. is pointing us to see

  504. that the leprosy

  505. on the outside

  506. is not just about

  507. the leprosy on the outside.

  508. It's about something

  509. deeper than that,

  510. about the healing,

  511. the cleansing,

  512. the baptism

  513. that humanity needs

  514. deeper on the inside.

  515. External problems

  516. are a revelation

  517. of internal problems

  518. all throughout the Bible.

  519. And so,

  520. cleansing is the word

  521. that we really need.

  522. And so,

  523. in verse 15 and 16,

  524. you'll see that

  525. one of the nine,

  526. when he was cleansed,

  527. healed,

  528. he praises God

  529. with a loud voice,

  530. he turns back.

  531. The word,

  532. the language gets used,

  533. he turns back.

  534. It's almost

  535. a physical word

  536. for an inner

  537. type of repentance even.

  538. You can see how much

  539. the physical

  540. was pointing to the spiritual.

  541. It says,

  542. when he saw

  543. his outward skin

  544. was healed,

  545. he turned around.

  546. And he goes back

  547. to Jesus,

  548. praising God.

  549. And he,

  550. we learn at the end

  551. of the story,

  552. Jesus points out,

  553. he's a foreigner,

  554. he's a Samaritan.

  555. He is the very one

  556. of the ten

  557. you do not expect

  558. to do this.

  559. He's not Jewish.

  560. He's an outsider

  561. in the community,

  562. yet the outsider

  563. is so far away

  564. from being distant

  565. to Jesus Christ

  566. that now he's laying

  567. on his face

  568. at his feet.

  569. The outsider

  570. has become the insider

  571. and you see Jesus

  572. under the shadow

  573. of the cross saying,

  574. I'm here

  575. to make lepers clean

  576. and to bring outsiders,

  577. those with a deeper problem,

  578. spiritual leprosy,

  579. all the way in,

  580. all the way to me.

  581. And it's this one,

  582. this Samaritan

  583. that sees it

  584. and pronounces it.

  585. it's him

  586. that repents

  587. in his physical action

  588. and turns around

  589. and goes back to Jesus

  590. and the exegetical key

  591. in all of it

  592. is in verses 15 and 16

  593. and then down

  594. in verse 18.

  595. What does he say

  596. when he turns around?

  597. It says he turns back

  598. and he praised God

  599. with a loud voice

  600. and then when he falls

  601. on his face

  602. before Jesus' feet,

  603. he gives him thanks

  604. and Jesus answered,

  605. where are the nine?

  606. There's the question.

  607. Was no one found

  608. to return,

  609. was no one found

  610. to return

  611. and give praise

  612. to God

  613. except this one Samaritan,

  614. this foreigner?

  615. Now you might pass by this

  616. but it's so important

  617. because if you were

  618. to go across the street

  619. to New College,

  620. to any of the academic

  621. divinity departments

  622. across the UK,

  623. the places where many

  624. of our church members

  625. have studied,

  626. in the biblical studies

  627. department,

  628. in the New Testament

  629. department,

  630. you would be told

  631. that Jesus never identifies

  632. himself as God

  633. in the Gospels

  634. and instead,

  635. Paul identifies Jesus

  636. as God.

  637. Decades later,

  638. he creates that

  639. and then we read

  640. that back into the Gospels

  641. because we've read Paul

  642. and that's the normal thesis

  643. of the New Testament

  644. departments across the land,

  645. across the academy.

  646. But did you catch it?

  647. What's the exegetical key?

  648. What's the key

  649. in this man's life

  650. in turning around

  651. the one of the ten?

  652. It's that he turned back,

  653. he went toward Jesus

  654. praising God

  655. and then you say,

  656. well,

  657. who is this God?

  658. And then as he laid

  659. on his face

  660. at Jesus' feet,

  661. Jesus said,

  662. where are the rest?

  663. Did no one else

  664. come back

  665. to praise God?

  666. And that means

  667. that Jesus is saying,

  668. he's God

  669. in this moment.

  670. Did nobody else

  671. come back

  672. to get on their knees

  673. and praise God?

  674. And who is that?

  675. Well,

  676. it's whoever the person is

  677. that you're laying

  678. on your face in front of.

  679. That's who the one

  680. you're worshiping is.

  681. You see,

  682. Jesus self-consciously

  683. in this moment

  684. on his way to Jerusalem

  685. identifies himself

  686. as God.

  687. And that's the real key

  688. to understand

  689. the issue

  690. in the heart

  691. that's going on

  692. in the other nine.

  693. And you see,

  694. 10 men received

  695. physical healing

  696. from Jesus,

  697. healing from their lepers.

  698. They received

  699. a wonderful benefit

  700. from a great master,

  701. a great rabbi.

  702. One man,

  703. one man among the 10

  704. had an encounter

  705. of worship

  706. with his God.

  707. You see,

  708. 10 men got

  709. a great benefit

  710. from him,

  711. a great master.

  712. Boy,

  713. was he powerful.

  714. But only one person

  715. had an encounter

  716. not only with a great master

  717. but his God.

  718. And so,

  719. when he realized

  720. that he turned back,

  721. he came back

  722. and he fell on his face

  723. praising God,

  724. praising God

  725. and giving thanks

  726. before him.

  727. And so,

  728. Jesus said,

  729. where are the other nine?

  730. In other words,

  731. they came for the benefits.

  732. Luke is trying

  733. to get us to see

  734. that leprosy

  735. on the outside

  736. points us to

  737. spiritual leprosy

  738. on the inside.

  739. And spiritual leprosy

  740. in this story

  741. has two aspects to it.

  742. The first is this.

  743. It's when

  744. we have

  745. one of the most common

  746. and respectable

  747. forms of unbelief.

  748. And that's

  749. to believe God exists,

  750. to be a religious insider,

  751. to be interested

  752. chiefly

  753. in the benefits

  754. of belief

  755. rather than

  756. any sense

  757. of a living relationship

  758. with my God,

  759. our God.

  760. God.

  761. And that's

  762. the beginning

  763. of the revelation

  764. of spiritual leprosy

  765. deep in the heart.

  766. The difference

  767. in the nine

  768. and the one

  769. is the nine

  770. got a benefit,

  771. the ten did,

  772. but only one

  773. realized that

  774. this is my God

  775. and I want

  776. a living relationship

  777. with him.

  778. And Jesus,

  779. he said something

  780. really similar

  781. in John's gospel

  782. after feeding

  783. the 5,000

  784. in John 6.

  785. He turned

  786. to a group

  787. of people

  788. that came to him

  789. and he said,

  790. you seek me

  791. because you ate

  792. the loaves of bread

  793. and were filled.

  794. So you're chasing

  795. after me

  796. because I filled

  797. your belly

  798. last week.

  799. And it's important

  800. to say Jesus

  801. wants to fill bellies.

  802. And Jesus

  803. wants to heal

  804. skin diseases.

  805. And Jesus

  806. wants to restore

  807. people to their family.

  808. And Jesus

  809. wants to put

  810. us back

  811. into the city

  812. we were made for.

  813. And he also

  814. saying,

  815. but the real

  816. heart of living

  817. faith is to

  818. want him

  819. and to come

  820. back because

  821. you want him

  822. more than any

  823. benefit.

  824. And so that

  825. leads to the

  826. second and

  827. deeper aspect

  828. of spiritual

  829. leprosy here.

  830. And that's

  831. this,

  832. the one,

  833. the Samaritan,

  834. he came back

  835. and it says

  836. he got on

  837. his knees,

  838. he got on

  839. his face

  840. and he gave

  841. thanks.

  842. And Jesus

  843. asked where

  844. the rest to

  845. come and give

  846. thanks to me.

  847. Spiritual

  848. leprosy

  849. is a problem

  850. humanity has

  851. and it is

  852. in this passage

  853. I think being

  854. implicitly taught

  855. to us that

  856. it is a heart

  857. of ingratitude

  858. to God.

  859. It's living

  860. a life of

  861. ingratitude.

  862. Where does

  863. unbelief start?

  864. You know,

  865. unbelief does

  866. not begin

  867. with atheism.

  868. It's striking

  869. that in

  870. Paul's

  871. most important

  872. definition of

  873. unbelief in

  874. the book of

  875. Romans,

  876. Romans chapter

  877. one,

  878. the way he

  879. begins it

  880. all,

  881. Romans 1

  882. 21,

  883. he says,

  884. although

  885. humanity

  886. knew God,

  887. they didn't

  888. honor him

  889. as a God.

  890. nor did

  891. they give

  892. thanks.

  893. So when

  894. you asked

  895. Paul,

  896. what is

  897. unbelief?

  898. And he

  899. said,

  900. to not

  901. come and

  902. honor God

  903. or give

  904. thanks to

  905. him.

  906. And so

  907. when we

  908. think about

  909. ingratitude

  910. in our

  911. lives,

  912. you know,

  913. I think

  914. when I

  915. think about

  916. it at

  917. first,

  918. I think

  919. I chalk

  920. this up

  921. to an

  922. issue of

  923. manners.

  924. You know,

  925. that's not

  926. a very,

  927. my kids

  928. aren't being

  929. grateful

  930. enough.

  931. And I

  932. think you

  933. need to

  934. learn your

  935. manners.

  936. But the

  937. Bible

  938. takes in

  939. gratitude

  940. and says

  941. it's not

  942. just manners,

  943. it's

  944. spiritual

  945. leprosy.

  946. A lack

  947. of gratitude

  948. to God

  949. and to

  950. other people

  951. and all

  952. the things

  953. we've been

  954. given.

  955. You know,

  956. you think

  957. about it,

  958. no one

  959. tonight

  960. would ever

  961. say,

  962. you know,

  963. I want

  964. to live

  965. with ungrateful

  966. people.

  967. We know

  968. how important

  969. gratitude

  970. of the heart

  971. is to

  972. being a

  973. healthy

  974. human.

  975. And how

  976. do you

  977. diagnose

  978. spiritual

  979. leprosy?

  980. How do

  981. you know?

  982. Well,

  983. spiritual

  984. leprosy

  985. manifests in

  986. the modern

  987. world in

  988. a newer

  989. phrase we

  990. have,

  991. and that's

  992. just a

  993. sense of

  994. entitlement,

  995. of being

  996. owed

  997. things.

  998. How do

  999. you know?

  1000. How do

  1001. you know

  1002. the places

  1003. in your

  1004. life where

  1005. you've

  1006. got that

  1007. disease,

  1008. where you've

  1009. got entitlement,

  1010. where I've

  1011. got entitlement?

  1012. I was thinking

  1013. about this,

  1014. and it's

  1015. not by making

  1016. a list of

  1017. the things

  1018. you're thankful

  1019. for and

  1020. then asking

  1021. what's not

  1022. here.

  1023. These are

  1024. the things

  1025. I'm not

  1026. very grateful

  1027. for.

  1028. I think

  1029. it's far

  1030. more can

  1031. be diagnosed

  1032. by addressing

  1033. your irritations

  1034. and asking

  1035. what irritates

  1036. me the most.

  1037. So when

  1038. you're at

  1039. work,

  1040. when I'm

  1041. at work,

  1042. when I'm

  1043. here downstairs

  1044. and the

  1045. Wi-Fi

  1046. goes out,

  1047. I get this

  1048. lump down

  1049. in my

  1050. stomach,

  1051. my chest

  1052. that says

  1053. I cannot

  1054. believe that

  1055. I'm going

  1056. to lose

  1057. hours here.

  1058. I can't.

  1059. The Wi-Fi

  1060. went out.

  1061. Or when

  1062. you're

  1063. Amazon

  1064. Prime

  1065. delivery

  1066. does not

  1067. come because

  1068. it said

  1069. Amazon Prime

  1070. is next

  1071. day delivery

  1072. and you

  1073. think,

  1074. can you

  1075. believe this?

  1076. The Amazon

  1077. Prime delivery

  1078. package did not

  1079. come the next

  1080. day.

  1081. Well,

  1082. it's silly,

  1083. but what's

  1084. actually happening

  1085. is what's being

  1086. expressed is that

  1087. our irritations

  1088. show us far

  1089. more our sense

  1090. of entitlement

  1091. than making a list

  1092. of things we're

  1093. grateful for and

  1094. looking,

  1095. what have I not

  1096. listed here?

  1097. You've got to

  1098. look at your

  1099. irritations.

  1100. And friends,

  1101. modern people,

  1102. people of

  1103. 2026,

  1104. with me,

  1105. we are far

  1106. more prone

  1107. to this

  1108. spiritual

  1109. leprosy

  1110. than any

  1111. other era

  1112. of human

  1113. history

  1114. because we

  1115. are customers.

  1116. We are

  1117. perpetual

  1118. customers.

  1119. We live

  1120. in an age

  1121. of being

  1122. a customer

  1123. at all

  1124. times,

  1125. and customers

  1126. paid,

  1127. and therefore

  1128. they're entitled.

  1129. And,

  1130. you know,

  1131. the customer's

  1132. never grateful.

  1133. The customer

  1134. is always,

  1135. always owed.

  1136. I was thinking

  1137. about this

  1138. through the lens

  1139. of imagining,

  1140. and I have to

  1141. hustle here.

  1142. In 18th century,

  1143. Edinburgh,

  1144. I've heard that

  1145. word a couple

  1146. times,

  1147. so I'm going

  1148. to use it,

  1149. Edinburgh,

  1150. an Edinburgh

  1151. a citizen

  1152. in the 18th

  1153. century,

  1154. living out here

  1155. on Victoria

  1156. Street,

  1157. where the

  1158. poorest of the

  1159. poor lived

  1160. in the 18th

  1161. and 19th

  1162. century.

  1163. And there

  1164. were 50

  1165. people to a

  1166. flat at times

  1167. when Thomas

  1168. Guthrie planted

  1169. this church

  1170. and visited

  1171. those poor.

  1172. And the

  1173. disease was

  1174. rampant,

  1175. and once

  1176. Thomas Guthrie

  1177. found a

  1178. whole pig

  1179. living,

  1180. a couple

  1181. pigs living

  1182. inside one

  1183. of the flats

  1184. that he

  1185. visited.

  1186. That's where

  1187. you kept

  1188. your animals

  1189. too.

  1190. And imagine

  1191. showing them

  1192. a tap

  1193. of water

  1194. that never

  1195. stops right

  1196. here in our

  1197. little kitchen

  1198. hut.

  1199. And then

  1200. imagine

  1201. turning and

  1202. taking them

  1203. a step

  1204. further,

  1205. taking them

  1206. to Waitrose.

  1207. Boy.

  1208. And then

  1209. imagine taking

  1210. that 18th

  1211. century Edinburgh

  1212. poor living

  1213. in 50 in a

  1214. room across

  1215. the street

  1216. and pulling

  1217. out your

  1218. phone and

  1219. saying,

  1220. I have

  1221. every song

  1222. that's ever

  1223. been recorded

  1224. in this

  1225. device right

  1226. here.

  1227. And you

  1228. know,

  1229. if my

  1230. phone doesn't

  1231. play my

  1232. podcast on

  1233. the way to

  1234. work on

  1235. Monday,

  1236. I want to

  1237. throw it.

  1238. I'm so,

  1239. you know,

  1240. why?

  1241. Because what

  1242. happens in a

  1243. customer culture

  1244. is that what

  1245. was once a

  1246. gift becomes a

  1247. norm.

  1248. And what was

  1249. once a norm

  1250. becomes an

  1251. expectation.

  1252. And what was

  1253. once an

  1254. expectation

  1255. becomes something

  1256. that we're

  1257. entitled to.

  1258. And because we

  1259. live in a

  1260. customer culture,

  1261. boy, we live

  1262. in a world

  1263. where people

  1264. publish Google

  1265. reviews for

  1266. worship services.

  1267. We live in a

  1268. customer world,

  1269. and that means

  1270. that we struggle

  1271. with entitlement,

  1272. rights,

  1273. more than any

  1274. other in human

  1275. history.

  1276. And the Bible

  1277. says,

  1278. ingratitude and

  1279. not seeing

  1280. everything as a

  1281. gift of God,

  1282. we don't deserve

  1283. anything,

  1284. is spiritual

  1285. leprosy.

  1286. There's two

  1287. ways to come

  1288. before the

  1289. Lord.

  1290. One is to

  1291. say, I love

  1292. your benefits

  1293. and I'll take

  1294. your goods.

  1295. And the

  1296. other is to

  1297. say, this is

  1298. my Lord and

  1299. my Savior,

  1300. and I want to

  1301. get on my

  1302. knees and say,

  1303. Lord, thank

  1304. you, I don't

  1305. deserve anything.

  1306. Now, how do we

  1307. fix it as we

  1308. finish?

  1309. Very briefly,

  1310. thirdly, the

  1311. leper priest.

  1312. This requires

  1313. self-examination

  1314. in our lives.

  1315. Of course, the

  1316. question as we

  1317. close has to be,

  1318. do I struggle

  1319. with ingratitude?

  1320. Do I have

  1321. spiritual leprosy

  1322. in my life?

  1323. Am I an

  1324. ungrateful person?

  1325. And am I

  1326. entitled?

  1327. And the answer

  1328. is yes.

  1329. Yes.

  1330. And that is

  1331. why Jesus'

  1332. face is set

  1333. like Flint

  1334. towards Jerusalem.

  1335. And here in

  1336. verse 14,

  1337. as we close,

  1338. we can ask,

  1339. why did Jesus

  1340. send them to

  1341. the priest in

  1342. the first place?

  1343. He said,

  1344. go to the

  1345. priest,

  1346. because the

  1347. priest in the

  1348. first century

  1349. in the ancient

  1350. Near East is

  1351. the public health

  1352. official,

  1353. the public health

  1354. officer.

  1355. And so you

  1356. got to go to

  1357. the priest,

  1358. and once you're

  1359. healed,

  1360. you have to

  1361. show that to

  1362. the priest,

  1363. and then the

  1364. priest pronounces

  1365. that you can

  1366. come back,

  1367. you're not

  1368. excommunicated

  1369. anymore.

  1370. Where is Jesus

  1371. sending them to?

  1372. He's sending

  1373. them to the

  1374. priest,

  1375. and who is

  1376. the priest?

  1377. The priest

  1378. is the most

  1379. important official

  1380. in the culture

  1381. that reads

  1382. the law,

  1383. and then declares

  1384. the law over

  1385. someone.

  1386. He takes

  1387. Leviticus,

  1388. he says,

  1389. have the rules

  1390. of Leviticus

  1391. been followed

  1392. in this person's

  1393. situation?

  1394. And if it

  1395. has,

  1396. he says,

  1397. now you can

  1398. come back.

  1399. But it's very

  1400. important to know

  1401. the priest could

  1402. never make

  1403. anybody clean.

  1404. The priest could

  1405. only declare

  1406. somebody clean.

  1407. All they could

  1408. do was look at

  1409. the law and

  1410. ask,

  1411. is this enough?

  1412. And I think

  1413. in the same

  1414. way,

  1415. as it's been

  1416. pointed out

  1417. by others,

  1418. when Jesus

  1419. sends them

  1420. to the priest,

  1421. he's sending

  1422. them to the

  1423. law of the

  1424. old covenant.

  1425. And when you

  1426. diagnose in

  1427. yourself,

  1428. I do have

  1429. spiritual leprosy,

  1430. I am a person

  1431. who struggles

  1432. with ingratitude,

  1433. I do have a

  1434. sense of

  1435. entitlement,

  1436. I'm not

  1437. grateful to

  1438. God for so

  1439. much.

  1440. If you say,

  1441. how am I

  1442. going to deal

  1443. with it,

  1444. and you go

  1445. to the law,

  1446. you go to

  1447. the priest,

  1448. and you read

  1449. the Bible,

  1450. and you

  1451. will find

  1452. this,

  1453. that the

  1454. law is a

  1455. perfect mirror,

  1456. but a

  1457. useless medicine.

  1458. It can show

  1459. you what you

  1460. should be,

  1461. but it will

  1462. not make

  1463. you clean,

  1464. it will not

  1465. help you,

  1466. and if you

  1467. say,

  1468. today I'm

  1469. going to

  1470. practice

  1471. gratitude,

  1472. and I'm

  1473. going to

  1474. keep a

  1475. gratitude

  1476. journal,

  1477. and I'm

  1478. going to

  1479. talk to

  1480. the Lord

  1481. every day

  1482. about all

  1483. the things

  1484. I'm

  1485. thankful

  1486. for,

  1487. do that,

  1488. absolutely,

  1489. but the

  1490. problem already,

  1491. it's too

  1492. late.

  1493. The spiritual

  1494. leprosy is

  1495. already there.

  1496. The ingratitude

  1497. has already

  1498. been established,

  1499. the rebellion

  1500. has already

  1501. been,

  1502. and so you

  1503. can try,

  1504. we can try

  1505. our hardest,

  1506. but even if we

  1507. do it so well

  1508. tonight,

  1509. by tomorrow,

  1510. well,

  1511. we have been

  1512. grateful enough,

  1513. and when he

  1514. sends them to

  1515. the priest,

  1516. what is he

  1517. doing?

  1518. There's a

  1519. moment,

  1520. I think it's

  1521. in verse 15

  1522. and 16,

  1523. when the

  1524. one of the

  1525. ten sees

  1526. his arms

  1527. cleansed,

  1528. his body

  1529. cleansed,

  1530. and then as

  1531. soon as the

  1532. cleansing comes,

  1533. he turns

  1534. back,

  1535. and he goes

  1536. the other

  1537. way.

  1538. Why?

  1539. It's like he

  1540. realized,

  1541. guys,

  1542. he told us

  1543. to go to

  1544. the priest,

  1545. and we've

  1546. been cleansed,

  1547. the priest

  1548. is behind

  1549. us,

  1550. the priest

  1551. is the one

  1552. that sent

  1553. us.

  1554. He turned

  1555. around,

  1556. why?

  1557. Because he

  1558. knew that

  1559. the priest

  1560. of the old

  1561. covenant

  1562. could not

  1563. do anything

  1564. for him.

  1565. This is the

  1566. declaration of

  1567. the end

  1568. of the law,

  1569. and now in

  1570. this moment,

  1571. the one of

  1572. the ten,

  1573. the Samaritan,

  1574. the outsider

  1575. realizes Jesus

  1576. Christ is the

  1577. true and better

  1578. priest.

  1579. I need a

  1580. priest that's

  1581. not just going

  1582. to declare me

  1583. clean,

  1584. maybe,

  1585. according to

  1586. Leviticus,

  1587. I need a

  1588. priest who

  1589. can make

  1590. me clean.

  1591. And he

  1592. comes back

  1593. because he

  1594. realizes that

  1595. this is not

  1596. only my

  1597. master,

  1598. not only my

  1599. rabbi,

  1600. not only my

  1601. God,

  1602. but he is

  1603. also my

  1604. priest.

  1605. And Jesus

  1606. just so

  1607. happens to

  1608. be set

  1609. with his

  1610. face like

  1611. Flint towards

  1612. Jerusalem,

  1613. where the

  1614. true priest

  1615. will become

  1616. the supreme

  1617. leper in

  1618. all of

  1619. history.

  1620. The true

  1621. priest who

  1622. is God

  1623. also became

  1624. leprous for

  1625. you.

  1626. And the

  1627. way to

  1628. deal with

  1629. the problem

  1630. of our

  1631. ingratitude

  1632. is to

  1633. come and

  1634. say,

  1635. the law

  1636. can't

  1637. cleanse me

  1638. and my

  1639. gratitude

  1640. can't

  1641. cleanse me

  1642. and I

  1643. can be

  1644. as grateful

  1645. as possible

  1646. for the rest

  1647. of my

  1648. days and

  1649. that will

  1650. not help

  1651. me.

  1652. Instead,

  1653. we've got

  1654. to say

  1655. that he

  1656. was stricken

  1657. at the

  1658. cross for

  1659. my

  1660. entitlement.

  1661. He was

  1662. crushed

  1663. because of

  1664. my life

  1665. of ingratitude.

  1666. He was

  1667. excommunicated

  1668. ultimately

  1669. because of

  1670. my spiritual

  1671. leprosy.

  1672. And only

  1673. on that

  1674. basis then

  1675. can he turn

  1676. to you

  1677. in faith,

  1678. in your

  1679. faith,

  1680. because that's

  1681. what you're

  1682. saying.

  1683. And he

  1684. says,

  1685. rise up

  1686. and go

  1687. on your

  1688. way.

  1689. And so

  1690. in verse

  1691. 18,

  1692. the last

  1693. word here

  1694. in verse

  1695. 18,

  1696. rise and

  1697. go your

  1698. way.

  1699. Your faith

  1700. has made

  1701. you well.

  1702. And I have

  1703. to point

  1704. out the

  1705. footnote

  1706. in the

  1707. ESV,

  1708. if you

  1709. have a

  1710. Bible

  1711. in front

  1712. of you,

  1713. which says

  1714. that it

  1715. could also

  1716. be translated,

  1717. your faith

  1718. has saved

  1719. you.

  1720. And I

  1721. think it

  1722. should read,

  1723. rise,

  1724. your faith

  1725. has saved

  1726. you.

  1727. He was

  1728. one amongst

  1729. the ten

  1730. who said,

  1731. this is

  1732. my priest,

  1733. he will

  1734. be stricken

  1735. for my

  1736. ingratitude.

  1737. If you

  1738. say that

  1739. tonight on

  1740. that basis,

  1741. now go,

  1742. now go

  1743. and practice

  1744. gratitude.

  1745. Gratitude

  1746. has to be

  1747. shown to

  1748. God.

  1749. And to

  1750. protect

  1751. ourselves

  1752. from

  1753. ingratitude,

  1754. it's got

  1755. to be

  1756. shown every

  1757. day,

  1758. that's the

  1759. practice of

  1760. gratitude

  1761. we're

  1762. called to.

  1763. So in

  1764. verse 15,

  1765. gratitude,

  1766. what does

  1767. it look

  1768. like?

  1769. It looks

  1770. like a

  1771. man,

  1772. a woman

  1773. who

  1774. daily

  1775. gets on

  1776. their face,

  1777. on their

  1778. knees before

  1779. the Lord

  1780. Jesus and

  1781. says,

  1782. thank you,

  1783. thank you,

  1784. morning and

  1785. evening,

  1786. thank you,

  1787. Lord,

  1788. I don't

  1789. deserve it.

  1790. That's the

  1791. practice of

  1792. gratitude.

  1793. Let's pray.

  1794. Father,

  1795. we ask that

  1796. you would

  1797. teach us to

  1798. be grateful.

  1799. We know

  1800. that we're

  1801. not,

  1802. so we

  1803. come before

  1804. you,

  1805. declaring our

  1806. spiritual

  1807. leprosy and

  1808. our need and

  1809. needing your

  1810. forgiveness.

  1811. And we

  1812. look to the

  1813. true leper,

  1814. the Christ

  1815. who was

  1816. made supremely

  1817. leprous for

  1818. us in the

  1819. middle of

  1820. history.

  1821. And now

  1822. we ask,

  1823. Lord,

  1824. that on the

  1825. basis of

  1826. being cleansed

  1827. by him,

  1828. you would

  1829. give us

  1830. fresh gratitude.

  1831. Gratitude brings

  1832. joy to us,

  1833. and so we want

  1834. it this week

  1835. even.

  1836. So forgive us,

  1837. Lord,

  1838. change us,

  1839. send us in a

  1840. new direction,

  1841. help us to be

  1842. like the

  1843. Samaritan who

  1844. turned back

  1845. and got on

  1846. his face and

  1847. worshipped you.

  1848. And so,

  1849. Lord,

  1850. we say thank

  1851. you as we

  1852. sing the

  1853. final hymn.

  1854. In Christ's

  1855. name we

  1856. pray.

  1857. Amen.
