  1. We're going to read together in John's Gospel.

  2. We're reading in John chapter 5, the first 18 verses of the chapter.

    John 5 chapter mention

  3. It's page 890 of the Church Bible, if you want to follow there.

  4. The readings also in some of the intimation leaflets,

  5. there's orders of service and the readings there also.

  6. So John chapter 5, reading from verse 1 to verse 18.

    John 5 chapter mention

  7. Let's hear and read together in God's Word.

  8. After this, there was a feast of the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  9. Now, there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool in Aramaic called Bethesda,

  10. which has five roofed colonnades.

  11. In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed.

  12. One man was there who had been an invalid for 38 years.

  13. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time,

  14. he said to him,

  15. Do you want to be healed?

  16. The sick man answered him,

  17. Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up,

  18. and while I am going, another steps down before me.

  19. Jesus said to him,

  20. Get up, take up your bed, and walk.

  21. And at once the man was healed,

  22. and he took up his bed and walked.

  23. Now, that day was the Sabbath.

  24. So, the Jews said to the man who had been healed,

  25. It is the Sabbath,

  26. and it's not lawful for you to take up your bed.

  27. But he answered them,

  28. The man who healed me, that man said to me,

  29. Take up your bed and walk.

  30. They asked him,

  31. Who is the man who said to you,

  32. Take up your bed and walk?

  33. Now, the man who had been healed did not know who it was,

  34. for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.

  35. Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him,

  36. See, you are well.

  37. Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.

  38. The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.

  39. And this is why the Jews were persecuting Jesus,

  40. because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

  41. But Jesus answered them,

  42. My father is working until now,

  43. and I am working.

  44. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him,

  45. because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  46. but he was even calling God his own father,

  47. making himself equal with God.

  48. This is the word of God,

  49. and to his name be the praise and the glory.

  50. I don't know about you,

  51. but when I was in school,

  52. we were told there was no such thing as silly questions.

  53. Anything is fine to bring before the teacher.

  54. The teacher's happy to deal with any queries you might have.

  55. Maybe it was just my school,

  56. but it did feel like there were, in fact,

  57. a lot of silly questions.

  58. But we are in a series,

  59. a preaching series,

  60. called questions that Jesus asked.

  61. And as David has just read for us,

  62. we read about a man,

  63. Jesus comes and finds this man who's been lying

  64. by a healing pool for a long time.

  65. He's incredibly sick.

  66. He can't walk.

  67. He's in a pretty bad way.

  68. He's hoping for miraculous healing.

  69. And Jesus comes up to him and says,

  70. Do you want to be well?

  71. And it seems to me,

  72. at least on first reading,

  73. that Jesus is actually breaking

  74. the there are no silly questions.

  75. Rule.

  76. Of course,

  77. this man wants to be well.

  78. He's been lying there for a long time,

  79. 38 years,

  80. hoping,

  81. just hoping that somehow his paralysis,

  82. his paralysis is going to be cured

  83. and he's going to be able to walk.

  84. We think,

  85. and this is what four years of seminary teaches you.

  86. Jesus doesn't ask silly questions.

  87. And in fact,

  88. Jesus sometimes asks questions,

  89. the kinds of questions that are so clear

  90. and so precise,

  91. they pierce right to the heart

  92. of the human condition.

  93. And I think this is one of those questions.

  94. It's a diagnostic question.

  95. It doesn't prompt a one word answer.

  96. The man doesn't say yes.

  97. The man doesn't say no.

  98. But he reveals so much about who this man really is,

  99. how he sees the world that he is inhabiting,

  100. where his hope is and where it isn't.

  101. I want to show you tonight,

  102. this isn't a silly question at all.

  103. It's a question that Jesus is still asking today,

  104. not to a man lying on a mat 2000 years ago,

  105. but to all of us here in Edinburgh tonight.

  106. We all know people in need of physical healing.

  107. Some people are in very urgent of miraculous healing.

  108. We know,

  109. and we pray for them.

  110. But even if you're relatively well,

  111. even if you were able to,

  112. you know,

  113. run up the steps from the car park today,

  114. you don't have to look too far to see things

  115. that you need to be healed from.

  116. You can see the brokenness of the world,

  117. the fragility of our mental and emotional health.

  118. You know that human relationships are fragile.

  119. They're so easily broken and so difficult to heal.

  120. You've experienced disappointments.

  121. You've experienced suffering.

  122. You've seen greed.

  123. You've seen envy.

  124. You've seen hurt.

  125. You don't need to be a Christian to know

  126. that we all need healing from all of these things.

  127. The story of Jesus healing an invalid by the pool

  128. goes beyond our need for physical healing.

  129. It offers true healing

  130. because true healing doesn't just patch us up for a while.

  131. True healing is complete.

  132. It offers deep,

  133. eternal rest from ever needing to go looking for healing again.

  134. So this passage doesn't just tell us about the wonderful healing.

  135. Also points us clearly to the source,

  136. where this healing comes from.

  137. And it's not a pool.

  138. It's a person.

  139. I've got three points.

  140. The first point is,

  141. what's wrong with you?

  142. John goes up to,

  143. John tells us that Jesus is going up to a festival.

  144. And there he comes to the Sheep Gate

  145. and there's a pool,

  146. a pool called Bethesda.

  147. For a long time,

  148. people who wanted to discredit the Bible

  149. kind of hung on this pool and said,

  150. there's no evidence that this pool actually ever existed.

  151. Notice that the passage tells us

  152. this pool has five porticos.

  153. Those are porches.

  154. And they offered shelter from the sun and the heat

  155. for those who were lying around them.

  156. So we all know, don't we,

  157. that swimming pools are only rectangular,

  158. oval, maybe a circle.

  159. Nobody's ever heard of a pentagon shaped pool.

  160. There's no archaeological evidence

  161. that this pool ever existed.

  162. And John's really specific about where it is,

  163. right beside the Sheep Gate.

  164. It had never been discovered until it was.

  165. And finally, it was uncovered relatively recently

  166. in the 19th century.

  167. Archaeologists think that this wasn't necessarily

  168. a healing pool,

  169. like it's been treated by this man,

  170. but it was probably a Jewish ritual cleansing pool.

  171. There were, when it was excavated,

  172. they found that there was a rectangular pool.

  173. So rectangular pool has four sides, right?

  174. Four porches,

  175. except there was two separate basins.

  176. So the top pool would flow into the second pool.

  177. And across the middle,

  178. there was this wall,

  179. which had a porch.

  180. And there we have it,

  181. five porches,

  182. a five porched pool.

  183. And it proves exactly

  184. what Jotun was writing about is true.

  185. So why does that even matter?

  186. Why does it matter?

  187. Why does it need to be a real pool?

  188. Isn't the most important bit,

  189. the bit that Jesus does?

  190. Well, yes,

  191. the most important bit is the bit that Jesus does.

  192. But if we can trust the Bible to be completely accurate

  193. about a five-sided pool

  194. that people never thought existed,

  195. and the detail that goes into describing

  196. exactly what that is,

  197. then we can trust the Bible to be really crystal clear

  198. about the big important things that it tells us,

  199. like we're going to see tonight who Jesus really is.

  200. So Jesus comes to this pool of Bethesda.

  201. Bethesda means something like house of mercy

  202. or house of grace,

  203. which is bitterly ironic

  204. because it doesn't seem as though

  205. there's much mercy or grace in this place.

  206. It's full of people lying around

  207. completely debilitating,

  208. debilitated,

  209. waiting for a miraculous healing.

  210. There's no grace in this place at all

  211. until Jesus shows up.

  212. And then amongst this sea of sick people,

  213. Jesus identifies one man,

  214. an invalid.

  215. He's lying on his mat,

  216. probably like a reed mat that you can roll up.

  217. And he's been there a long time.

  218. But John tells us that

  219. Jesus didn't need to be told any of this

  220. because he already knew exactly

  221. what the man's condition was.

  222. So the passage doesn't tell us exactly

  223. what the man's disability was,

  224. what was specifically wrong with him.

  225. He had a weakness and he couldn't walk.

  226. But it does show us

  227. that there's more to this man's condition

  228. than his physical ailment.

  229. John's one of four gospels

  230. and they all tell the story of Jesus's life,

  231. but they come at it from slightly different angles.

  232. John's a very precise writer.

  233. He's really clear about what he does.

  234. And he doesn't usually include

  235. specific details by accident.

  236. I think he's deliberately told us

  237. that this man's been ill for 38 years.

  238. And I think that that number

  239. is one of the keys for us unlocking

  240. the meaning of this whole episode

  241. that Jesus has.

  242. Because we find this exact number

  243. in a very particular place

  244. in the Old Testament.

  245. So in Deuteronomy,

  246. we read about how God

  247. had brought the children of Israel

  248. to the edge of the promised land.

  249. Right to the edge.

  250. The land that he promised

  251. to Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob,

  252. to these people's forefathers.

  253. And they came right up to the edge,

  254. but they didn't get to go in.

  255. They weren't allowed to enter

  256. the land of rest.

  257. They had to wander in the wilderness

  258. for years and years first.

  259. How many years?

  260. 38 years.

  261. They had to wander in the wilderness

  262. for 38 years

  263. until all the people

  264. who were guilty

  265. of not putting their trust in God

  266. had died.

  267. And it was their descendants

  268. who were to enter the land.

  269. They weren't allowed to enter the land

  270. because of unbelief.

  271. They simply didn't trust God

  272. to deliver on the things

  273. that he promised them he would.

  274. And I think this is the connection.

  275. This is one of the connections

  276. John wants us to make

  277. between this man and Israel.

  278. This man is suffering.

  279. He's been suffering for a long time

  280. in a really terrible way.

  281. But underneath his suffering,

  282. underneath his physical suffering,

  283. is a spiritual sickness.

  284. Notice too that Jesus comes

  285. to this man twice.

  286. So he comes to him by the pool

  287. and he sees him when he's unwell.

  288. But Jesus has also come to him later on.

  289. He comes to him at the temple.

  290. And Jesus' words there,

  291. the words that he says to him

  292. are important as well.

  293. In verse 14,

  294. Jesus says,

  295. See your well.

  296. Sin no more,

  297. that nothing worse may happen to you.

  298. Jesus is linking the man's

  299. physical condition to sin.

  300. So he's not doing it

  301. in a mechanical way.

  302. He's not saying,

  303. if you sin,

  304. you're going to get sick.

  305. A few chapters later,

  306. John chapter 9,

    John 9 chapter mention

  307. Jesus explains that that's,

  308. you know,

  309. the idea of suffering

  310. isn't always directly

  311. connected to punishment for sin.

  312. But Jesus is showing this man,

  313. he's showing us,

  314. there's a need for greater healing,

  315. even greater healing

  316. than being paralytic for 38 years.

  317. The final thing to notice on this

  318. is that this need

  319. for a different kind of healing

  320. is in verse 4.

  321. John says,

  322. there are multitudes of sick,

  323. blind, lame, paralyzed people

  324. all around him.

  325. And when we've read the Bible

  326. and we look at that,

  327. we see this is a clear picture

  328. of the fallen world

  329. under the effects of sin.

  330. This man's physical weakness

  331. is not his biggest problem.

  332. His biggest problem

  333. is spiritual helplessness.

  334. And this man's physical condition,

  335. it mirrors the spiritual condition

  336. of all of humanity

  337. apart from Christ.

  338. Apart from Christ,

  339. Christians,

  340. human beings

  341. are in a perilous situation.

  342. You might not have physical ailments

  343. holding you back,

  344. but in Ephesians,

  345. Paul tells us that

  346. apart from Christ,

  347. we're not simply unwell,

  348. we're not simply off key,

  349. we're dead in our sins.

  350. Not limping,

  351. not weak,

  352. spiritually dead.

  353. And that's the diagnosis.

  354. That diagnosis

  355. is much more serious

  356. than paralysis.

  357. So Jesus sees this man,

  358. he sees through

  359. his presenting symptoms

  360. to diagnose

  361. his spiritual desperation.

  362. condition.

  363. We don't know exactly

  364. what the condition

  365. of this man's legs are,

  366. but that's not really

  367. what this is about.

  368. It's about the condition

  369. of his heart.

  370. And it's the same

  371. for each of us.

  372. The problem of sin

  373. is universal.

  374. Everyone,

  375. all the multitudes

  376. lying in the porches,

  377. all five porches

  378. around this pool,

  379. they had it,

  380. they had the same condition.

  381. Each of us has it too.

  382. But saying that you've

  383. got a sin problem

  384. is not an insult.

  385. It's a mercy

  386. because you have to know

  387. what's wrong

  388. in order to know

  389. where to go

  390. to be healed

  391. or more accurately,

  392. who to go to.

  393. So we have a diagnosis

  394. for this man,

  395. for ourselves.

  396. And this is when

  397. Jesus asks the question

  398. that with our understanding

  399. of what sin is

  400. and the same condition

  401. can pierce us

  402. in the heart.

  403. When we read on,

  404. when we read,

  405. Jesus says,

  406. do you actually

  407. want to be healed?

  408. Do you want to be well?

  409. And when we first read this,

  410. it feels a bit confronting,

  411. I think,

  412. confusing perhaps.

  413. This guy's at rock bottom.

  414. Of course he wants

  415. to be well.

  416. It almost sounds cruel.

  417. So this,

  418. you can imagine

  419. this poor guy

  420. is kind of dragging himself

  421. unable to walk

  422. and somebody else

  423. is getting down

  424. and achieving healing

  425. before him.

  426. If you think about it

  427. in those terms,

  428. it's like Jesus is saying,

  429. you're not working hard enough.

  430. Go harder,

  431. go faster.

  432. But that's not

  433. what's happening at all.

  434. Jesus is asking

  435. this question

  436. to expose

  437. the deeper reality.

  438. And when you look

  439. at the man's answer,

  440. I think it reveals

  441. to us a lot.

  442. So first of all,

  443. look at what the man

  444. doesn't say.

  445. He doesn't actually

  446. give a direct

  447. answer to the question.

  448. Instead,

  449. he explains

  450. why it's impossible

  451. for him

  452. to be healed.

  453. He says

  454. he doesn't have anyone

  455. to help him

  456. and other people

  457. are more mobile

  458. than he is.

  459. So these things

  460. might be true.

  461. I'm sure these things

  462. are true.

  463. But why doesn't he

  464. simply say yes?

  465. Why doesn't he say,

  466. yes, I do want to be healed.

  467. He could say,

  468. stranger,

  469. please,

  470. you've come up

  471. and spoken to me.

  472. Hang about a bit

  473. just in case the water

  474. is troubled

  475. and you can help me

  476. to the water

  477. and I can get well.

  478. But he doesn't say that.

  479. And I think that reveals

  480. so much about his

  481. attitude to life

  482. and the identity

  483. that he has.

  484. So for 38 years,

  485. this guy has been

  486. the invalid.

  487. His whole identity

  488. is wrapped up

  489. in helplessness.

  490. He's learned

  491. to explain

  492. his condition

  493. away to people

  494. rather than

  495. hold out hope

  496. for real

  497. change.

  498. In the film

  499. The Shawshank Redemption,

  500. Brooks is the

  501. elderly librarian.

  502. He's been in prison

  503. for 50 years

  504. and eventually

  505. Brooks gets parole

  506. and he leaves prison

  507. and he doesn't

  508. last very long

  509. and he can't

  510. handle life

  511. on the outside

  512. and he takes

  513. his own life

  514. and he leaves

  515. a suicide note

  516. and it says

  517. that at first

  518. the walls of prison

  519. felt confining

  520. but eventually

  521. he became so

  522. familiar with them

  523. that he couldn't

  524. imagine life

  525. outside them.

  526. One of the lead

  527. characters in the

  528. film, Red,

  529. he's played by

  530. Morgan Freeman.

  531. He says,

  532. at first

  533. you hate the walls

  534. around you

  535. and then slowly

  536. you get used to them

  537. and given enough

  538. time

  539. you come to

  540. depend on them.

  541. Enough years

  542. imprisoned

  543. and a person

  544. stops being able

  545. to function

  546. anywhere else.

  547. And do you see

  548. it isn't that

  549. the man enjoys

  550. his broken

  551. condition.

  552. It's that 38

  553. years is enough

  554. time for him

  555. to have built

  556. an entire existence

  557. around his illness.

  558. His habits,

  559. his spot

  560. under the porch,

  561. his place

  562. in the begging

  563. order perhaps.

  564. So when Jesus

  565. says to him,

  566. do you want

  567. to be healed?

  568. The question

  569. isn't true

  570. and it isn't silly,

  571. it's surgical.

  572. Jesus is asking

  573. if this man

  574. actually

  575. is ready

  576. to lose

  577. the whole,

  578. everything

  579. of life

  580. that he knows

  581. in exchange

  582. for a life

  583. that he can't

  584. even imagine.

  585. Jesus is asking

  586. him,

  587. do you want

  588. to build

  589. an entire life

  590. from scratch,

  591. leaving every

  592. aspect of your

  593. old life

  594. behind?

  595. And that's

  596. scary.

  597. I wonder

  598. if you can

  599. see elements

  600. of this man's

  601. situation

  602. in your

  603. spiritual life.

  604. Are there

  605. patterns of sin

  606. in your life

  607. that have

  608. become so

  609. ingrained

  610. that you

  611. can't see

  612. a way of

  613. leaving them

  614. behind?

  615. Maybe you're

  616. caught in

  617. apathy,

  618. in your

  619. devotional life,

  620. your prayer

  621. life,

  622. your time

  623. with God

  624. and that

  625. urgency

  626. that you

  627. once had

  628. to be with

  629. your heavenly

  630. father has

  631. dissipated,

  632. but it's

  633. been so

  634. long,

  635. trying to

  636. change just

  637. seems too

  638. difficult.

  639. Or maybe

  640. there's a

  641. sin in your

  642. life,

  643. you know

  644. that it's

  645. not pleasing

  646. to God,

  647. but you

  648. even stop

  649. praying about

  650. it because

  651. you just

  652. think now

  653. that's part

  654. of who you

  655. are.

  656. Because if

  657. you can see

  658. any hints

  659. of these

  660. things in

  661. your life,

  662. then the

  663. gospel confronts

  664. you with a

  665. stark question.

  666. do you

  667. really want

  668. Christ's

  669. transforming

  670. grace?

  671. Are you

  672. willing to

  673. take the

  674. sins that

  675. you've become

  676. so accustomed

  677. to and

  678. put them

  679. to death?

  680. Okay,

  681. so our

  682. deepest

  683. sickness isn't

  684. physical sickness,

  685. it's spiritual,

  686. it's sin.

  687. And being

  688. healed means

  689. letting go of

  690. the patterns

  691. of sin that

  692. we've become

  693. so comfortable

  694. with.

  695. But here's the

  696. wonderful news.

  697. You're not

  698. alone.

  699. you're not

  700. expected to

  701. do these

  702. things by

  703. yourself.

  704. In verse

  705. seven, the

  706. man says,

  707. sir, I

  708. have no

  709. one.

  710. But although

  711. from his

  712. desperate

  713. situation, his

  714. perspective

  715. looked like

  716. there was no

  717. one to

  718. help.

  719. The man

  720. could only

  721. lie in his

  722. mat, but

  723. Jesus comes

  724. to him.

  725. This man

  726. wasn't looking

  727. for Jesus.

  728. He doesn't

  729. ask to be

  730. healed.

  731. When Jesus

  732. arrives, the

  733. guy doesn't

  734. even know

  735. who he

  736. is, but

  737. Jesus chooses

  738. him.

  739. Jesus'

  740. compassion is

  741. personal and

  742. it's intentional.

  743. And he

  744. asks the

  745. man to

  746. contribute

  747. nothing to

  748. his healing,

  749. nothing at

  750. all.

  751. Jesus simply

  752. speaks the

  753. words and

  754. the man is

  755. immediately

  756. made whole.

  757. Like,

  758. spiritually,

  759. every one

  760. of us is

  761. this man.

  762. God's grace

  763. always precedes

  764. faith.

  765. We don't

  766. climb up

  767. to God.

  768. We don't

  769. have to get

  770. near the

  771. pool in

  772. order to

  773. splash water

  774. in our

  775. faces and

  776. make ourselves

  777. look clean

  778. enough to

  779. be presentable

  780. to our

  781. heavenly

  782. father.

  783. We can't.

  784. We're

  785. spiritually

  786. paralyzed,

  787. unable to

  788. take a

  789. single step

  790. without God's

  791. grace.

  792. We're

  793. powerless to

  794. save ourselves

  795. and we're

  796. utterly

  797. dependent on

  798. someone else

  799. to save

  800. us.

  801. And this

  802. is actually

  803. good news

  804. because the

  805. one who

  806. can save

  807. us will

  808. save us.

  809. He knows

  810. exactly who

  811. you are.

  812. He knows

  813. exactly what

  814. you've done.

  815. He knows

  816. exactly what

  817. you need.

  818. All you have

  819. to do is

  820. believe that

  821. he is who

  822. he says he

  823. is.

  824. And this

  825. leads us to

  826. the most

  827. important thing

  828. I think that

  829. John wants

  830. us to see

  831. in this

  832. passage.

  833. So thirdly,

  834. finally,

  835. can you

  836. see the

  837. sign?

  838. John tells

  839. us right

  840. at the

  841. end of

  842. his gospel

  843. exactly why

  844. he wrote

  845. it.

  846. He wrote,

  847. these things

  848. are written

  849. so that you

  850. may believe

  851. that Jesus

  852. is the

  853. Christ,

  854. the Son

  855. of God,

  856. and that by

  857. believing you

  858. may have

  859. life in

  860. his name.

  861. These things

  862. are written

  863. so you'll

  864. believe that

  865. Jesus is the

  866. Christ,

  867. the Son

  868. of God,

  869. and that by

  870. believing in

  871. these things

  872. you'll have

  873. life in

  874. his name.

  875. All the

  876. miracles in

  877. John's

  878. gospel,

  879. are all

  880. written for

  881. that purpose.

  882. And John

  883. doesn't call

  884. them miracles,

  885. he calls

  886. them signs.

  887. Not simply

  888. to show that

  889. Jesus is a

  890. super healer,

  891. although he

  892. obviously is,

  893. but to convince

  894. you that he

  895. really is who he

  896. claims to be,

  897. the Son of

  898. God.

  899. Look,

  900. we're used to

  901. seeing signs

  902. at poolside.

  903. God.

  904. With the

  905. account of

  906. this man

  907. at Bethesda,

  908. John's

  909. putting up a

  910. big sign for

  911. us to see,

  912. but the sign

  913. doesn't say

  914. no running,

  915. no diving,

  916. no heavy

  917. petting.

  918. The sign

  919. reads,

  920. Jesus truly

  921. is the

  922. Christ,

  923. the Son

  924. of God.

  925. Believe that

  926. and you'll

  927. have something

  928. much greater

  929. than physical

  930. healing.

  931. You'll receive

  932. spiritual healing.

  933. You'll be

  934. made whole

  935. and that

  936. means you'll

  937. be reconciled

  938. with God.

  939. But there's

  940. tragedy,

  941. tragedy in the

  942. second half of

  943. this passage.

  944. The man who's

  945. been healed

  946. walks out

  947. carrying his

  948. mat.

  949. He's been

  950. lying there

  951. for 34

  952. years.

  953. Let's put

  954. ourselves in

  955. that position

  956. just for a

  957. second.

  958. Somebody you're

  959. vaguely familiar

  960. with, you know

  961. that he can't

  962. walk.

  963. He's been

  964. lying there

  965. for 38

  966. years, begging,

  967. desperate,

  968. lonely and

  969. alone.

  970. And he comes

  971. walking towards

  972. you and

  973. what's the

  974. first thing

  975. you would

  976. say to

  977. him?

  978. You'd say,

  979. wow, what

  980. happened?

  981. Who did

  982. this?

  983. I'm so

  984. pleased that

  985. you've been

  986. healed.

  987. This is

  988. incredible.

  989. But the

  990. first people

  991. that this

  992. man meets

  993. don't react

  994. like that

  995. at all.

  996. He meets

  997. the religious

  998. authorities of

  999. the time

  1000. and they're

  1001. not full of

  1002. joy in

  1003. any way.

  1004. In fact,

  1005. they're

  1006. outraged.

  1007. They say,

  1008. what do you

  1009. think you're

  1010. doing?

  1011. It's the

  1012. Sabbath day

  1013. and you're

  1014. breaking the

  1015. law.

  1016. Jesus has

  1017. just performed

  1018. miraculous

  1019. healing and

  1020. all they can

  1021. see is a

  1022. rolled up

  1023. mat under

  1024. a guy's

  1025. arm.

  1026. Now, this

  1027. guy actually,

  1028. he hasn't

  1029. broken God's

  1030. law by

  1031. carrying his

  1032. mat.

  1033. The scribes

  1034. accused this

  1035. man of,

  1036. you know,

  1037. not resting on

  1038. the seventh

  1039. day, the day

  1040. God appointed

  1041. for people

  1042. not to

  1043. work.

  1044. This man

  1045. wasn't

  1046. working.

  1047. He'd just

  1048. been made

  1049. whole.

  1050. He was

  1051. going home.

  1052. But in

  1053. the Jewish

  1054. tradition,

  1055. they'd

  1056. invented,

  1057. they'd

  1058. created,

  1059. they'd

  1060. built around

  1061. the

  1062. Sabbath

  1063. law,

  1064. certain

  1065. rules,

  1066. codes that

  1067. they had

  1068. to live

  1069. by.

  1070. I think

  1071. they were

  1072. 39.

  1073. I'm not

  1074. sure.

  1075. What they

  1076. thought

  1077. constituted

  1078. breaking the

  1079. Sabbath day

  1080. and one

  1081. of those

  1082. rules was

  1083. carrying

  1084. furniture.

  1085. Think about

  1086. what has

  1087. to happen

  1088. for you

  1089. for that

  1090. situation

  1091. to come

  1092. about.

  1093. Think about

  1094. how committed

  1095. you have to

  1096. be to your

  1097. own legal

  1098. system,

  1099. your own

  1100. internal

  1101. code to

  1102. live by,

  1103. the code

  1104. that you've

  1105. laid down

  1106. exactly in

  1107. your image

  1108. for you

  1109. to uphold.

  1110. that when

  1111. God performs

  1112. an unmistakable

  1113. miracle directly

  1114. in front of

  1115. you,

  1116. you don't

  1117. even see

  1118. God.

  1119. You just

  1120. see an

  1121. infringement.

  1122. They're looking

  1123. straight at

  1124. the sign

  1125. and they

  1126. can't read

  1127. it because

  1128. they've decided

  1129. in advance

  1130. what the

  1131. sign should

  1132. say.

  1133. I think

  1134. like for

  1135. all of us,

  1136. those of us

  1137. who've grown

  1138. up in

  1139. church,

  1140. who've been

  1141. in church

  1142. for a long

  1143. time,

  1144. this is

  1145. frightening us

  1146. a little

  1147. bit.

  1148. Because

  1149. just like

  1150. the healed

  1151. man's

  1152. condition is

  1153. a mirror

  1154. to our

  1155. spiritual

  1156. condition,

  1157. these

  1158. first century

  1159. Jewish

  1160. rulers,

  1161. they remind

  1162. us that

  1163. there's such

  1164. an easy

  1165. tendency

  1166. to legalism.

  1167. Doctrine

  1168. is important.

  1169. The Sabbath

  1170. day is really

  1171. important.

  1172. But there's

  1173. this permanent

  1174. temptation,

  1175. I think,

  1176. in the heart

  1177. of Christians,

  1178. people who

  1179. take their

  1180. faith seriously,

  1181. to be so

  1182. committed to

  1183. our own

  1184. codes,

  1185. our own

  1186. sense of

  1187. how Christians

  1188. are supposed

  1189. to behave,

  1190. how Christians

  1191. are supposed

  1192. to look,

  1193. things that

  1194. are within

  1195. our comfort

  1196. zone,

  1197. boundaries that

  1198. we put

  1199. around God,

  1200. what is

  1201. and what

  1202. isn't

  1203. acceptable

  1204. to us,

  1205. that there's

  1206. a danger we

  1207. miss God

  1208. when he's

  1209. right in

  1210. front of

  1211. us,

  1212. doing things

  1213. that only

  1214. he can

  1215. do.

  1216. The question

  1217. that these

  1218. guys should

  1219. have been

  1220. asking

  1221. themselves

  1222. about this

  1223. Sabbath

  1224. controversy

  1225. is not,

  1226. is this

  1227. permissible,

  1228. but who

  1229. can do

  1230. what Jesus

  1231. has just

  1232. done?

  1233. Who can

  1234. speak a

  1235. paralyzed

  1236. man well?

  1237. On the

  1238. spot,

  1239. no rehab,

  1240. no recovery

  1241. period,

  1242. instantly

  1243. whole.

  1244. I mean,

  1245. there's only

  1246. one possible

  1247. answer.

  1248. only the

  1249. one who

  1250. created

  1251. human

  1252. bodies,

  1253. the one

  1254. who created

  1255. human bodies

  1256. in the

  1257. first place

  1258. could ever

  1259. restore a

  1260. human body

  1261. like this.

  1262. Only the

  1263. one who

  1264. holds the

  1265. whole world

  1266. in his

  1267. hands has

  1268. the kind

  1269. of authority,

  1270. the kind

  1271. of power

  1272. over broken

  1273. flesh and

  1274. blood to

  1275. take a man

  1276. whose legs

  1277. are broken

  1278. and make

  1279. him walk.

  1280. That's the

  1281. sign.

  1282. And the

  1283. question that

  1284. John's whole

  1285. gospel puts

  1286. to us is

  1287. in this

  1288. story, but

  1289. in other

  1290. places as

  1291. well, is

  1292. can you

  1293. read it?

  1294. Can you

  1295. read the

  1296. sign?

  1297. Will you

  1298. look in

  1299. John's gospel

  1300. at what

  1301. Jesus does

  1302. and see

  1303. who Jesus

  1304. is?

  1305. Or will

  1306. you look

  1307. like the

  1308. authorities in

  1309. this passage

  1310. and be so

  1311. preoccupied by

  1312. your own

  1313. code,

  1314. or your

  1315. own comfort

  1316. or your

  1317. own carefully

  1318. curated

  1319. conditions,

  1320. your own

  1321. right and

  1322. wrong, that

  1323. you miss

  1324. Jesus entirely?

  1325. So, John

  1326. hangs up a

  1327. sign by the

  1328. pool in

  1329. Bethesda, but

  1330. it isn't a

  1331. list of do's

  1332. and don'ts like

  1333. we might see at

  1334. the local

  1335. swimming pool.

  1336. It's a portrait

  1337. of a person.

  1338. Jesus is

  1339. pointing us

  1340. to the fact

  1341. that Jesus

  1342. truly is what

  1343. he says he

  1344. is.

  1345. Jesus truly

  1346. is the

  1347. God-man,

  1348. the one

  1349. who's so

  1350. much greater

  1351. than a

  1352. pool of

  1353. purifying

  1354. water.

  1355. Just one

  1356. chapter back

  1357. in John,

  1358. John chapter

  1359. four,

  1360. Jesus meets

  1361. a woman

  1362. beside a

  1363. well and

  1364. he said to

  1365. her, if you

  1366. knew who it

  1367. was that was

  1368. speaking to

  1369. you, you

  1370. would have

  1371. asked me and

  1372. I would have

  1373. given you

  1374. living water.

  1375. Living water

  1376. isn't a

  1377. special drink

  1378. that Jesus

  1379. hands out.

  1380. Like in our

  1381. passage today,

  1382. Jesus isn't

  1383. the one who

  1384. will carry

  1385. broken people

  1386. into a

  1387. healing pool.

  1388. Jesus is

  1389. living water.

  1390. There are so

  1391. many water

  1392. references in

  1393. the Bible,

  1394. but I'm just

  1395. going to finish

  1396. with this one.

  1397. In the last

  1398. chapter of the

  1399. last book of

  1400. the Bible,

  1401. Paul, in

  1402. his vision,

  1403. John sees

  1404. a river, a

  1405. river of

  1406. water of

  1407. life, bright

  1408. as crystal

  1409. flowing from

  1410. the throne of

  1411. God and the

  1412. Lamb, flowing

  1413. through the

  1414. middle of the

  1415. street and on

  1416. each side of

  1417. the river is

  1418. the tree of

  1419. life and the

  1420. leaves of that

  1421. tree are for

  1422. the healing of

  1423. the nations.

  1424. This is the

  1425. vision of the

  1426. future for

  1427. everyone who

  1428. puts their

  1429. trust in

  1430. Jesus.

  1431. You see,

  1432. through his

  1433. victory on

  1434. the cross,

  1435. Jesus undoes

  1436. the brokenness

  1437. of the world

  1438. that we see

  1439. around us.

  1440. He restores the

  1441. beauty and

  1442. splendor of the

  1443. Garden of Eden

  1444. when everything

  1445. was perfect.

  1446. And the

  1447. restored access

  1448. to the tree

  1449. of life,

  1450. that includes

  1451. the reconciliation

  1452. of people

  1453. with God

  1454. and the

  1455. intimacy of

  1456. our relationship

  1457. with him.

  1458. This is what

  1459. Jesus is

  1460. bringing when

  1461. he returns.

  1462. the first

  1463. miracle Jesus

  1464. ever performed

  1465. was turning

  1466. water into

  1467. wine.

  1468. At the end

  1469. of his life,

  1470. he makes this

  1471. astonishing

  1472. statement.

  1473. He says,

  1474. I'll not

  1475. drink wine

  1476. again until

  1477. I drink it

  1478. new with

  1479. you in

  1480. my father's

  1481. kingdom.

  1482. This is the

  1483. great hope

  1484. of every

  1485. Christian.

  1486. This is how

  1487. we can move

  1488. forward with

  1489. joy despite

  1490. the trials,

  1491. the suffering,

  1492. the pain

  1493. that this

  1494. life so

  1495. often hands

  1496. to people.

  1497. Maybe tonight

  1498. you feel like

  1499. you're a

  1500. paralyzed man

  1501. waiting by

  1502. a pool,

  1503. helpless and

  1504. lost.

  1505. But put your

  1506. trust in Jesus

  1507. because this

  1508. is his

  1509. invitation.

  1510. He says,

  1511. one day,

  1512. come to me,

  1513. one day

  1514. you'll drink

  1515. festival wine

  1516. face to face

  1517. with the

  1518. water of

  1519. life.

  1520. Let's pray.

  1521. Lord,

  1522. our God,

  1523. help us

  1524. tonight to

  1525. see clearly

  1526. our own

  1527. need for

  1528. Jesus.

  1529. Jesus,

  1530. who is

  1531. the water

  1532. of life,

  1533. the living

  1534. water who

  1535. washes away

  1536. our sins.

  1537. Help us to

  1538. be people of

  1539. repentance,

  1540. confessing our

  1541. sin,

  1542. not just with

  1543. our lips,

  1544. but turning

  1545. away from

  1546. sin,

  1547. so that the

  1548. sin that we

  1549. know is so

  1550. grievous to

  1551. you.

  1552. We thank you,

  1553. Heavenly Father,

  1554. for your son

  1555. Jesus,

  1556. the living

  1557. water who

  1558. doesn't merely

  1559. improve us,

  1560. but who makes

  1561. us altogether

  1562. whole.

  1563. Help us

  1564. every day to

  1565. see the reality

  1566. of who

  1567. Christ is

  1568. and what

  1569. he's done

  1570. for all

  1571. sinners and

  1572. for us as

  1573. individuals,

  1574. specific

  1575. individuals,

  1576. seeking us

  1577. out just like

  1578. he did with

  1579. this man by

  1580. the pool.

  1581. Lord,

  1582. we ask that

  1583. you'd accept

  1584. our prayers

  1585. in Jesus'

  1586. name.

  1587. Amen.
