  1. And ask all of these things in the matchless name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

  2. God and godliness. God and godliness.

  3. Those are the two things that John wants us to know about in these 14 verses.

  4. But this evening, I'm going to divide those two points into three points.

  5. So the first two points have to do with God, and the last point has to do with godliness.

  6. The first two has to do with God, and the last has to do with godliness.

  7. So our first point this evening is this.

  8. Where does God's love come from?

  9. Where does God's love come from?

  10. Or, put properly, the first point is the genesis of God's love.

  11. The genesis of God's love. Where does God's love come from?

  12. And the answer to that is that it comes from God.

  13. God's love originates in God. It comes from God.

  14. And the second point this evening is the gift of God's love.

  15. What does God give us to show that he loves us?

  16. What does he give us to show that he loves us?

  17. And the answer to that question is that he gives us himself.

  18. God gives us himself.

  19. So the first point, the genesis of God's love is God.

  20. The gift of God's love, the second point, is God.

  21. And thirdly, the goal of God's love.

  22. Why does God love us?

  23. He loves us so that we may be lovely.

  24. God loves us so that we may be godly.

  25. The goal of God's love is godliness.

  26. So firstly, the genesis of God's love.

  27. Where does God's love come from?

  28. In verse 7, he calls us, he invites us, he calls us beloved.

  29. In verse 7, he says, beloved, let us love one another.

  30. For love is from God.

  31. Love is from God, he says.

  32. If you were to walk down the street in Edinburgh

  33. and ask someone on the street what love is

  34. and where it comes from,

  35. they may give you various answers.

  36. They may give you, they may say that love is a feeling.

  37. They may say that love is a commitment.

  38. They may say that love is an intimate relationship.

  39. They may say that love is an orientation.

  40. They may say that it is hard to define.

  41. But that you will know it when you see it.

  42. But John doesn't start off like that.

  43. He says love is from God.

  44. And in verse 8, he says anyone who does not love does not know God.

  45. And here is the programmatic statement.

  46. He says God is love.

  47. God is love.

  48. John doesn't say love is love or love is God.

  49. He says God is love.

  50. Have you thought about that?

  51. Love is not just a part of who God is.

  52. It is all of him.

  53. God's love, in fact, permeates all of his attributes.

  54. So God's holiness is a loving holiness.

  55. And his love is a holy love.

  56. In other words, everything that God does in this world

  57. is out of his love.

  58. Because that's who he is.

  59. And because God is an infinite God,

  60. God's love is also as infinite as he is.

  61. A fish could soon drink the ocean dry

  62. before we can exhaust the love of God.

  63. Because God is love.

  64. And he is infinite.

  65. And so is his love.

  66. His love is infinite.

  67. So you go in.

  68. You go in to God and he is love.

  69. You go in to God and he is love.

  70. Because he's infinite.

  71. You go in and you go in.

  72. He is love.

  73. You go in and in and in.

  74. He is love.

  75. Because our God is love.

  76. He is love.

  77. He is infinitely love.

  78. And he is not just love.

  79. He's a Trinitarian God, we know.

  80. We confessed this evening.

  81. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.

  82. Because he is a Trinitarian God.

  83. Love existed before the world was made.

  84. And one theologian said that God the Father is the lover.

  85. And God the Son is the beloved.

  86. And God the Spirit is the love between God the Father and the Son.

  87. And God the Son.

  88. Maybe it is hard to put our minds together to grasp that truth.

  89. But it is plain that the love that we experience began before time began.

  90. It began in the Trinity.

  91. There was perfect communion between God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  92. And there was perfect unity.

  93. There still is perfect love and perfect unity.

  94. And out of that love he created this world.

  95. That love bursts out.

  96. And we see it in our own loves, in our families, in our friendships.

  97. We see it in the church especially.

  98. Which John reminds us in verse 10.

  99. This is love.

  100. Not that we have loved God.

  101. But that he loved us.

  102. And sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

  103. We did not love God.

  104. God loved us.

  105. God didn't look through the tunnel of time and say that I love this man or this woman.

  106. Because he is righteous.

  107. God loved us.

  108. God always precedes all love for him.

  109. Before we were even made, God set his love, his affection on us, the Bible says.

  110. Before the creation of the world, the triune God who created the cosmos, he loved you.

  111. He loved you before the stars were made.

  112. so the scriptures speak about God's love as his abundant goodness his loving kindness

  113. his husbandly love for his bride his chesed love God's love is is not a fickle passion like

  114. all loves are often it's a steadfast love it's an unchanging love as God himself is

  115. do you know God's love if you are a believer this evening you have been loved by God and you know

  116. that love but if you are not a believer you can come to know this love by looking at the gift of

  117. God's love his son you can ponder the love of God and the great heights of it as John invites us to

  118. this evening but you may ask like all of us do from time to time if we have been loved by such a great

  119. love what what is the tangible proof of that love because if we have been Christians for for for

  120. just five minutes we know that our experiences often contradict what we read in the Bible we we face

  121. suffering we we put our sins to death we fight our sins and sometimes we wonder if God truly loves us

  122. because our experience says otherwise but John wants us to know that yes this love of God that begins in

  123. God is actually also poured out and given to us and that's our second point what is the gift of God's

  124. love what does God give us to show that he loves us he does give us all kinds of benefits but ultimately

  125. though those benefits may come and go depending on the seasons of life we are in don't they

  126. God's gifts are the earthly gifts that we enjoy they come and go beautiful marriages

  127. come to an end because the spouse died our sin gets in the way but ultimately though God gives us himself

  128. he gives us himself to know so that we may know rather that we are indeed loved by God and because God is a

  129. Trinitarian God he gives us his Trinitarian self he gives us his triune being he gives us his son

  130. verse 9 in this is the love of God was made manifest among us that God sent his only son into the world

  131. so that we might live through him we all died in Adam like Adam rebelled we all rebelled in Adam

  132. we left our maker but God sent his son into the world into this this broken world have you read the news

  133. the brokenness the brokenness we see shootings here shootings there assaults here and assaults there

  134. brokenness everywhere even within the church but God sends his son into the world this world that we inhabit

  135. God sent his son so that we might live through him and verse 10 verse 14

  136. and we have seen and testify that the father has sent his son to be the savior of the world he is the savior of the world and verse 10 towards the end of verse 10 he said but that in this is love not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his son to be the the propitiation for our sins what is propitiation propitiation is a is a fancy word that captures a

  137. a fundamental reality about who we are we are as humans because of our fall because of our rebellion we stand condemned and we are under the right judgment of God because of our sins

  138. and Jesus Christ not only did he live for us but he also died in our place did not only did he keep the commandments of God perfectly on our behalf but he also took the punishment for our law breaking

  139. he absorbed the wrath of God on the cross that is propitiation he was sent to be the propitiation for our sins

  140. verse 14 again the father sent his son to be the savior of the world so Jesus Christ comes into the world to redeem people from all tribes tongue and nation now and he

  141. he had been doing that from Adam to the last person who will ever be saved and he came for you

  142. Jesus Christ came for you he came for you yes

  143. he came to redeem you from your sin he came to give himself up for you so the gift of God's love in the person of his son and

  144. and in verse 13 in the person of his spirit

  145. verse 13 says by this we know that we abide in him and he in us

  146. because he has

  147. given us

  148. of his spirit

  149. he has given us of his spirit

  150. by this we know

  151. that we remain in him

  152. the assurance that we have

  153. as believers of our standing before God

  154. the confidence that we have before our standing before God

  155. that is from the Holy Spirit but even before that the reason we

  156. we confess Jesus Christ as Lord and the reason we can understand a

  157. hard passage like this it is because

  158. the Holy Spirit God the Holy Spirit

  159. has opened up our eyes to see and our ears to hear

  160. and our hearts to love he

  161. has been doing a work among us and

  162. the Holy Spirit living in us is God's guarantee

  163. that he has given himself to us

  164. so the gift of his son

  165. the gift of his spirit in turning our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh

  166. and thirdly the gift of the father

  167. in verses 15 and 16

  168. whoever confesses that Jesus is the son of God

  169. God abides in him

  170. and he in God

  171. God sends the Holy Spirit to open up our eyes

  172. so that we may behold

  173. the savior and savor him

  174. and he does that

  175. and then

  176. he brings us to himself

  177. so that we may

  178. abide

  179. in him

  180. and he in God

  181. and we in God

  182. what a wonderful truth that is

  183. God abides in us

  184. God

  185. remains in us

  186. God

  187. resides in us

  188. God lives in us

  189. the one

  190. who believes in God's love

  191. remains

  192. in that love

  193. and God remains in him

  194. we participate

  195. in

  196. God

  197. we live in God

  198. like a

  199. sparrow

  200. that lives

  201. in her nest

  202. we live in God

  203. do you know yourself

  204. to be

  205. given

  206. that gift

  207. the gift of God himself

  208. the father

  209. the son

  210. and the Holy Spirit

  211. and we share

  212. in

  213. in God

  214. even as we

  215. live our earthly lives

  216. even as we fall

  217. and falter

  218. and

  219. even as we get up

  220. and

  221. straighten up

  222. and

  223. and follow

  224. our Lord Jesus Christ

  225. as strangers

  226. and aliens

  227. even in our own

  228. homelands

  229. we participate

  230. in

  231. in God

  232. the three

  233. in one

  234. the same love

  235. that

  236. existed before

  237. time

  238. was made

  239. before the world

  240. was made

  241. reached out

  242. into creation

  243. reached out

  244. into the

  245. the messiness

  246. of our lives

  247. to the

  248. to the

  249. murkiness

  250. of sin

  251. itself

  252. reaches down

  253. and brings us

  254. back

  255. to himself

  256. love reaches

  257. down

  258. love lifts

  259. us up

  260. back to love

  261. back to God

  262. love of God

  263. the father

  264. love of God

  265. the son

  266. love of God

  267. the spirit

  268. given to

  269. us

  270. so

  271. secondly

  272. the gift

  273. of God's

  274. love

  275. is

  276. God

  277. it is

  278. God

  279. so the

  280. genesis

  281. of God's

  282. love

  283. where does

  284. God's

  285. love

  286. come from

  287. it comes

  288. from God

  289. himself

  290. the gift

  291. of God's

  292. love

  293. what does

  294. God give

  295. to show

  296. us

  297. that he

  298. loves us

  299. he gives

  300. us

  301. the greatest

  302. gift

  303. imaginable

  304. he gives

  305. us

  306. himself

  307. his

  308. triune

  309. self

  310. and thirdly

  311. and lastly

  312. the goal

  313. of God's

  314. love

  315. the goal

  316. of God's

  317. love

  318. it is

  319. godliness

  320. it is godliness

  321. I could have easily

  322. said that

  323. the goal of God's

  324. love is God

  325. because God

  326. created us

  327. and we fell

  328. and he redeemed

  329. us and he's

  330. slowly

  331. sanctifying us

  332. slowly

  333. and he's

  334. bringing

  335. us to

  336. himself

  337. so in

  338. one sense

  339. the goal

  340. of God's

  341. love is

  342. God

  343. he gets

  344. the glory

  345. and we

  346. return to

  347. him

  348. but in

  349. this life

  350. he calls

  351. us to be

  352. godly

  353. godlike

  354. he wants

  355. us to hear

  356. he wants

  357. us to

  358. believe

  359. and he

  360. wants us

  361. to do

  362. and in

  363. verse 17

  364. we are told

  365. of these

  366. things

  367. verse 17

  368. through 21

  369. we are reminded

  370. that we are

  371. called

  372. to be

  373. godly

  374. verse 17

  375. by this

  376. is love

  377. perfected

  378. with us

  379. so that we

  380. may have

  381. confidence

  382. for the

  383. day of

  384. judgment

  385. because as

  386. he is

  387. so also

  388. are we

  389. in this

  390. world

  391. god is

  392. reminded

  393. us of

  394. his great

  395. love

  396. he has

  397. reminded

  398. us of

  399. his great

  400. person

  401. and the

  402. love by

  403. which he

  404. has loved

  405. us

  406. and as

  407. we love

  408. god with

  409. our mind

  410. in that

  411. way

  412. thinking about

  413. who he

  414. is in

  415. himself

  416. and how

  417. he has

  418. loved

  419. us

  420. god's

  421. love is

  422. perfected

  423. in us

  424. and that

  425. ongoing

  426. perfection

  427. actually gives

  428. us confidence

  429. to stand

  430. before god's

  431. throne

  432. after all

  433. this book

  434. is written

  435. to give us

  436. christian

  437. confidence

  438. right

  439. christian

  440. assurance

  441. and out

  442. of that

  443. assurance

  444. we ought

  445. to love

  446. one another

  447. in verse 18

  448. there is no

  449. fear in

  450. love but

  451. perfect love

  452. casts out

  453. fear for

  454. fear has to

  455. do with

  456. punishment

  457. and whoever

  458. fears has

  459. not been

  460. perfected

  461. in love

  462. what does

  463. that mean

  464. it means

  465. that because

  466. god has

  467. loved you

  468. in this

  469. way

  470. in giving

  471. himself

  472. he has

  473. actually

  474. removed

  475. all fear

  476. that you

  477. may have

  478. of him

  479. as a

  480. judge

  481. you don't

  482. look at

  483. god as

  484. a judge

  485. anymore

  486. because he

  487. has loved

  488. you

  489. he's your

  490. father

  491. he's your

  492. friend

  493. he's your

  494. comforter

  495. fear

  496. so fear

  497. is out

  498. the window

  499. and the

  500. fear that

  501. keeps you

  502. chained

  503. to yourself

  504. it's gone

  505. now

  506. those chains

  507. are broken

  508. now and

  509. now you can

  510. actually love

  511. people

  512. without

  513. thinking what

  514. you can get

  515. from them

  516. it drives

  517. out fear

  518. verse 18

  519. and because

  520. jesus took

  521. our punishment

  522. we don't

  523. have to

  524. fear

  525. anymore

  526. when that

  527. fear is

  528. gone

  529. it makes

  530. us fearless

  531. to love

  532. others

  533. and john

  534. tells us

  535. in verse

  536. 20

  537. that

  538. that

  539. that we

  540. can be

  541. hypocrites

  542. sometimes

  543. if anyone

  544. says i love

  545. god and hates

  546. his brother

  547. he's a liar

  548. for he who

  549. does not

  550. love his

  551. brother whom

  552. he has

  553. seen

  554. god

  555. whom he

  556. has seen

  557. cannot

  558. love god

  559. whom he

  560. has not

  561. seen

  562. you can

  563. talk about

  564. trinitarian

  565. theology

  566. all day

  567. long

  568. talk about

  569. the love

  570. of god

  571. that existed

  572. before time

  573. began

  574. and still

  575. not love

  576. your brother

  577. he says

  578. we have to

  579. be called

  580. out of our

  581. hypocrisy

  582. we ought to

  583. love our

  584. brothers and

  585. sisters

  586. verse 21

  587. this is the

  588. commandment

  589. that we have

  590. from him

  591. whoever loves

  592. god

  593. must also

  594. love

  595. his brother

  596. if we have

  597. been loved

  598. by god

  599. and if

  600. if that

  601. love actually

  602. does come

  603. from god

  604. the father

  605. god the

  606. son

  607. and god

  608. the holy

  609. spirit

  610. and that

  611. love has

  612. actually given

  613. you god

  614. the father

  615. god the

  616. son and

  617. god the

  618. holy spirit

  619. then you

  620. are to

  621. love the

  622. people that

  623. you see

  624. the people

  625. that you

  626. can touch

  627. tangibly

  628. they say

  629. that edinburgh

  630. is one of

  631. the best

  632. cities

  633. to live

  634. in the

  635. world

  636. and i

  637. i agree

  638. with that

  639. i've only

  640. lived here

  641. for eight

  642. months

  643. and it

  644. is such a

  645. beautiful

  646. city and

  647. today was

  648. a great

  649. reminder

  650. that it

  651. is actually

  652. a wonderful

  653. city to

  654. live in

  655. but

  656. i was looking

  657. up a survey

  658. and it

  659. said about

  660. one-fifth

  661. of the

  662. adults

  663. in edinburgh

  664. feel lonely

  665. one-fifth

  666. that's about

  667. one in five

  668. person

  669. one in five

  670. people

  671. edinburgh

  672. all the

  673. people

  674. and this

  675. loneliness

  676. also

  677. affects the

  678. youngest

  679. populations

  680. of the

  681. city

  682. so the

  683. oldest and

  684. the youngest

  685. they're

  686. affected by

  687. loneliness

  688. how can

  689. you love

  690. your lonely

  691. brother and

  692. sister in

  693. their old

  694. age and

  695. in their

  696. young age

  697. how can

  698. you love

  699. your neighbor

  700. your closest

  701. neighbor

  702. for those of

  703. us who are

  704. married our

  705. closest neighbors

  706. are our

  707. husbands

  708. our wives

  709. our children

  710. how do we

  711. love them

  712. how do we

  713. love them

  714. and i think

  715. god's word

  716. actually gives

  717. us a framework

  718. for how we

  719. can love

  720. them you

  721. remember

  722. god's

  723. commandments

  724. the ten

  725. commandments

  726. are actually

  727. about loving

  728. god and

  729. loving

  730. our neighbor

  731. the first

  732. four

  733. commandments

  734. are about

  735. how we

  736. can love

  737. god

  738. and the

  739. last six

  740. commandments

  741. are about

  742. how we

  743. can love

  744. our neighbor

  745. so god

  746. actually

  747. doesn't leave

  748. us without

  749. help

  750. his commandments

  751. the last

  752. six commandments

  753. of the ten

  754. commandments

  755. give us a

  756. rubric for

  757. how we can

  758. love people

  759. in a tangible

  760. way

  761. so i'm

  762. going to go

  763. to exodus

  764. 20

  765. and just

  766. read the

  767. last six

  768. commandments

  769. this is

  770. the fifth

  771. commandment

  772. exodus 20

    Exodus 20:12

  773. verse 12

  774. honor your

  775. father and

  776. mother

  777. honor your

  778. father and

  779. mother

  780. that's a way

  781. to love

  782. people

  783. do you

  784. honor your

  785. parents

  786. do you

  787. honor the

  788. leaders in

  789. your church

  790. do you

  791. honor authority

  792. do you

  793. honor all

  794. the people

  795. in your

  796. church

  797. that's one

  798. way to love

  799. people

  800. verse 13

  801. you shall

  802. not

  803. murder

  804. that's a

  805. negative

  806. commandment

  807. what is

  808. the positive

  809. of it

  810. instead of

  811. murdering

  812. you can

  813. love people

  814. by giving

  815. life

  816. you can

  817. adopt

  818. you can

  819. give for

  820. the life

  821. sustaining

  822. needs of

  823. other people

  824. around you

  825. you can

  826. care for

  827. life from

  828. from the

  829. womb to

  830. the tomb

  831. as they say

  832. you can

  833. promote life

  834. and build it

  835. up and

  836. give to

  837. organizations

  838. that support

  839. work against

  840. for example

  841. abortion

  842. that's the

  843. sixth commandment

  844. the seventh

  845. one

  846. you shall

  847. not commit

  848. adultery

  849. how can

  850. you use

  851. that as

  852. a positive

  853. way to

  854. love your

  855. neighbor

  856. you can

  857. be faithful

  858. in your

  859. singleness

  860. you can

  861. be faithful

  862. in your

  863. marriages

  864. you can

  865. be faithful

  866. in loving

  867. your neighbors

  868. your children

  869. your brother

  870. your sister

  871. verse 15

  872. the

  873. eighth

  874. commandment

  875. you shall

  876. not steal

  877. so instead

  878. of stealing

  879. you can

  880. work hard

  881. for six

  882. days

  883. you shall

  884. work

  885. the Lord

  886. says

  887. work hard

  888. earn your

  889. money

  890. be industrious

  891. and then

  892. out of

  893. that money

  894. instead of

  895. stealing

  896. give people

  897. your riches

  898. the ninth

  899. commandment

  900. you shall

  901. not bear

  902. false witness

  903. against your

  904. neighbor

  905. how can you

  906. use that

  907. as a

  908. positive

  909. commandment

  910. instead of

  911. using your

  912. tongue to

  913. cut people

  914. down

  915. you can

  916. actually

  917. use it

  918. to build

  919. them up

  920. speak words

  921. of grace

  922. words of

  923. love

  924. words of

  925. the gospel

  926. to remind

  927. them of

  928. their standing

  929. before God

  930. even as

  931. they suffer

  932. from their

  933. own sins

  934. remind them

  935. of the gospel

  936. the riches

  937. that they have

  938. what about

  939. the tenth

  940. commandment

  941. you shall

  942. not covet

  943. your neighbor's

  944. house

  945. your neighbor's

  946. wife

  947. his male

  948. servant

  949. female

  950. servant

  951. etc

  952. instead of

  953. wanting what

  954. others have

  955. you work

  956. hard for

  957. what you

  958. need

  959. and instead

  960. of trying

  961. to desire

  962. to want

  963. what others

  964. have

  965. you would

  966. try to

  967. add to

  968. other people's

  969. prosperity

  970. would add

  971. to people's

  972. belongings

  973. that's the

  974. way to

  975. love your

  976. neighbor

  977. and

  978. the struggle

  979. is though

  980. a lot of

  981. things get

  982. in the way

  983. of our

  984. loving

  985. our neighbors

  986. sometimes

  987. it's laziness

  988. sometimes

  989. it is

  990. self-centeredness

  991. we only think

  992. about ourselves

  993. sometimes

  994. it's

  995. fatigue

  996. sometimes

  997. we're just

  998. busy

  999. sometimes

  1000. it's

  1001. anger

  1002. bitterness

  1003. or

  1004. unforgiveness

  1005. but when

  1006. you know

  1007. that you

  1008. have been

  1009. loved

  1010. by God

  1011. and that

  1012. love actually

  1013. comes from

  1014. God

  1015. and that

  1016. love actually

  1017. gives you

  1018. God

  1019. you can

  1020. actually

  1021. love people

  1022. in a

  1023. risk-taking

  1024. way

  1025. if these

  1026. verses

  1027. are written

  1028. to give us

  1029. Christian

  1030. assurance

  1031. and they

  1032. are

  1033. they are

  1034. written

  1035. to show

  1036. that we

  1037. actually

  1038. belong to

  1039. God

  1040. if we

  1041. have

  1042. confessed

  1043. Jesus

  1044. Christ

  1045. then out

  1046. of that

  1047. confidence

  1048. we can

  1049. actually

  1050. be risk-taking

  1051. lovers

  1052. of people

  1053. we can

  1054. be risk-takers

  1055. we can

  1056. love people

  1057. with a love

  1058. that does

  1059. not

  1060. look for

  1061. reciprocity

  1062. may

  1063. these

  1064. verses

  1065. actually

  1066. remind you

  1067. of God's

  1068. love

  1069. the genesis

  1070. of God's

  1071. love

  1072. may they

  1073. remind you

  1074. of God's

  1075. gift

  1076. of that

  1077. love

  1078. his

  1079. himself

  1080. his

  1081. trinitarian

  1082. self

  1083. and may

  1084. that

  1085. cause you

  1086. to be

  1087. godly

  1088. to be

  1089. lovely

  1090. may God

  1091. add his

  1092. blessing to

  1093. the preaching

  1094. of his

  1095. word

  1096. let us

  1097. pray

  1098. may

  1099. may
