  1. Father, your word is life.

  2. As we're going to see this morning, your word is powerful.

  3. Your word accomplishes things.

  4. Your word is not just doctrine and theory.

  5. It is life itself.

  6. And so God, as we read your word and think about your word and ponder your word,

  7. I pray by the power of the Spirit, won't you speak to us?

  8. Won't you birth a life in our hearts?

  9. Give us faith.

  10. Help grow love and hope in us, we pray, by the power of your word.

  11. So Jesus, speak to us in your mighty name we pray.

  12. Amen.

  13. Today's scripture reading is taken from 1 Thessalonians 1, verses 1 to 10.

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  14. Please follow along your Bible.

  15. If you don't have a Bible, please do still grab them from the front of the stage

  16. or at the back near the door.

  17. Our passage is on page 927 in the Church Bible.

  18. Hear, then, God's word to us today.

  19. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  20. Grace to you and peace.

  21. We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers,

  22. remembering before our God and Father your work of faith,

  23. and labor of love, and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  24. For we know, brothers, loved by God, that he has chosen you,

  25. because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power,

  26. and in the Holy Spirit, and with full conviction.

  27. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.

  28. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord.

  29. For you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,

  30. so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.

  31. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia,

  32. but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.

  33. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you,

  34. and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God,

  35. and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead,

  36. Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

  37. Let us believe and respond to God's true and living word.

  38. Great. Thanks, Betty.

  39. Do keep your Bibles open.

  40. We're going to be looking at some of these verses,

  41. and also some verses in the next chapter,

  42. so it would be helpful to keep your Bible open as we look at this now.

  43. Friends, I wonder if you have ever bought anything,

  44. maybe at a really good price, a fantastic deal,

  45. only to wonder afterwards whether what you bought was genuine,

  46. or whether you were scammed.

  47. I was recently given a pair of shoes by a friend of mine in South Africa.

  48. I was visiting him, and he told me about this really fancy, expensive pair of Nike sneakers

  49. that are apparently very, very rare and very expensive,

  50. and he got them for a deal online somewhere,

  51. and when they arrived, they didn't fit him,

  52. and so he passed them on to me,

  53. and he said to me,

  54. I'll give them to you on one condition.

  55. You must promise to wear them.

  56. They're a little bit out there,

  57. but I accepted.

  58. I'm not wearing them today, in case you're looking.

  59. Anyway, so when I got home,

  60. I Googled these shoes to see what's so fancy about them.

  61. I mean, what's the big deal?

  62. And the first thing that came up was a YouTube video saying,

  63. how do you know whether your Nikes are genuine or not?

  64. And then a guy went through all the pros and cons,

  65. and look at the sign, and look at the stitching,

  66. and look at the coloring,

  67. and I must confess, by the end of that,

  68. I'm not so sure where my shoes lie.

  69. They may be genuine, they may not be,

  70. but they were a gift, and I don't particularly mind.

  71. But what happens if you genuinely did pay

  72. an exorbitant price for something?

  73. What happens if you paid a very high price

  74. and invested in something only afterwards

  75. to find out that you were conned,

  76. that it was a scam?

  77. It wasn't genuine.

  78. Maybe you bought a very expensive piece of artwork,

  79. and you know exactly where it's going to go in your house,

  80. and a few years later, you find out it's not genuine at all.

  81. Well, think of the story of the Netflix show,

  82. Sour Grapes.

  83. I'm not sure if any of you saw that.

  84. A charismatic young wine connoisseur

  85. conned wealthy top auction houses and other connoisseurs

  86. out of millions of dollars

  87. by mixing cheap commercial wine

  88. and then relabeling it,

  89. putting in old corks,

  90. making it look like vintage Bordeaux blends from France,

  91. and selling it at exorbitant prices.

  92. Well, I don't know how many of you

  93. are buying Pablo Picasso artworks

  94. or 1970s Bordeaux blends wine,

  95. but I'm sure we all know that sinking feeling we have

  96. when we've invested something,

  97. maybe our heart or maybe financially or emotionally,

  98. we've given ourselves to something,

  99. and then afterwards you start to wonder,

  100. was I conned?

  101. Was that a scam?

  102. I don't know if you've had that sinking feeling

  103. where maybe you've invested money,

  104. you've sent money,

  105. you know, done a wire transfer somewhere,

  106. and after you've thought,

  107. gosh, I hope that is real.

  108. I hope I haven't just sent that money

  109. to some internet scammer.

  110. But what about faith in Jesus?

  111. What about our Christian walk?

  112. What about the gospel?

  113. If you're someone who considers yourself a Christian,

  114. have you ever questioned the authenticity of your faith?

  115. Maybe you've been disappointed by Christians

  116. from time to time.

  117. Maybe you've been hurt by the church.

  118. Maybe you've read up about the sex abuse scandals

  119. in the church,

  120. and particularly in the Catholic church previously,

  121. but even more recently in the Protestant church as well.

  122. Maybe you've been let down or betrayed

  123. by church leaders, church members,

  124. and it's caused you to question

  125. whether what you've been taught

  126. and what you believe is genuinely true.

  127. Whether this whole Christianity thing is real.

  128. Maybe it's just a con.

  129. Maybe it's all one big scan.

  130. And if you've ever had those thoughts,

  131. how would you know?

  132. How would you test it?

  133. How would you test the veracity or authenticity

  134. of the Christian faith?

  135. How would you know whether

  136. what you've always thought is true

  137. really is true?

  138. Well, those questions kind of lead us

  139. into the passage that we're going to be looking at today.

  140. And today we are starting the book of 1 Thessalonians.

  141. For the next couple of weeks,

  142. we're going to be going through it.

  143. And the book of Thessalonians

  144. is a wonderful, wonderful book of the Bible.

  145. It's very encouraging.

  146. And the way it comes about is

  147. it's a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote

  148. to this young church in the city of Thessalonica.

  149. And we find the background in Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  150. And the story is this.

  151. The Apostle Paul, along with two other guys,

  152. Silas and Timothy,

  153. traveling through the province of Macedonia,

  154. they come to the city of Thessalonica or Thessaloniki.

  155. It was the main city in the province of Macedonia,

  156. this Roman province.

  157. It still exists today, the city of Thessalonica.

  158. You can go and visit there in Greece.

  159. And having arrived, they go to a Jewish synagogue

  160. and they start to reason and discuss

  161. with the people of their day.

  162. And they look at the Old Testament scriptures

  163. and they show to them how Jesus,

  164. the one who died and rose again,

  165. is the Messiah, the Christ that they've been waiting for.

  166. And many people, both Jews and non-Jews, Gentiles,

  167. believe and they follow Jesus.

  168. And there are little church forms

  169. in the city of Thessalonica.

  170. And so this church is brand new with new Christians.

  171. But many people in the city don't like

  172. what Paul is doing and what he's saying.

  173. And so they get a mob together

  174. and they go and they attack some of the Christians.

  175. They drag them out of their houses.

  176. They bring them before the authorities

  177. and they accuse them of having started

  178. a kind of public nuisance,

  179. a political insurrection.

  180. And so he has this church that's brand new,

  181. just three weeks old,

  182. and already they're under attack,

  183. already they're under persecution.

  184. And the people of that city,

  185. the new Christians, say to Paul and Timothy,

  186. we know what these guys are like.

  187. They are dangerous.

  188. You better get out of here.

  189. And so Paul and Timothy and Silas

  190. flee the city of Thessalonica

  191. in the middle of the night.

  192. They go to a nearby town called Berea

  193. and then down to the city of Athens

  194. and they escape.

  195. But Paul is really worried about this church.

  196. He'd only been there three weeks.

  197. How's it gonna do?

  198. Is it gonna stand?

  199. Is it gonna be strong?

  200. Is it gonna fall apart?

  201. Is the suffering and the opposition

  202. gonna disrail this church?

  203. How are they gonna do?

  204. And so Paul sends Timothy, his sidekick,

  205. to go back to Thessalonica

  206. and find out how they're doing.

  207. And so Timothy goes

  208. and he stays there a couple of weeks

  209. and then he comes back to Paul

  210. and he brings a report.

  211. And this is what he says.

  212. The Thessalonians are doing well.

  213. They're standing strong.

  214. It's hard.

  215. There's lots of opposition.

  216. There's lots of persecution.

  217. Lots of suffering.

  218. But they're doing well.

  219. They're holding on to Jesus.

  220. But they are a little bit discouraged.

  221. They need some encouragement.

  222. And so Paul, rather than saying,

  223. whew, that's good news.

  224. Let's move on.

  225. Paul writes this letter

  226. to the Christians in Thessalonica,

  227. encouraging their faith

  228. and strengthening them.

  229. And his message in this book is this.

  230. Despite the real difficulties you face

  231. and despite the sudden departure

  232. of your leaders,

  233. Paul wants them not to be discouraged,

  234. not to give up on faith in Jesus,

  235. but to see that the Lord has been

  236. and still is at work in them.

  237. Even though Paul's not there,

  238. that Jesus is at work in them

  239. and he will continue to be so

  240. as they continue to hold on to him.

  241. And friends, that's true for us as well today.

  242. That the Christian faith sometimes is hard,

  243. sometimes disappointing,

  244. sometimes discouraging,

  245. sometimes leaders let us down

  246. or the church disappoints us.

  247. But if we will hold on to Jesus

  248. and hold on to the gospel,

  249. God himself will be at work in us

  250. and through us as we continue to hold on to him.

  251. And so that's what the book of Thessalonians

  252. is about and our passage today.

  253. And so let's dive in

  254. and look at a couple of things in this passage.

  255. I hope you've got it open with you

  256. and let's see.

  257. And so first thing,

  258. Paul wants them to know is this.

  259. Remember how the gospel came to you.

  260. Remember how the gospel came to you.

  261. Before we look at this passage,

  262. I want to just read to you from Acts chapter 17,

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  263. which I referenced a few minutes ago.

  264. So in Acts, Luke, who wrote Acts,

  265. wants to tell us how this church was born.

  266. And look what he says here.

  267. He says,

  268. For three Sabbath days,

  269. he, that's Paul,

  270. went to the synagogue,

  271. reasoned with them from the scriptures,

  272. explaining and proving

  273. that it was necessary for the Christ

  274. to suffer and rise from the dead,

  275. saying,

  276. This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you,

  277. is the Christ.

  278. And a great many of them were persuaded

  279. and joined Paul and Silas.

  280. Now, when you read that,

  281. it can give the impression that

  282. these guys became Christians

  283. simply because they were well-reasoned

  284. or well-argued.

  285. Maybe Paul was a very persuasive debater,

  286. a very persuasive orator.

  287. And he spoke very eloquently

  288. and they thought,

  289. Yeah, that sounds true.

  290. Sign me up.

  291. I'll become a Christian.

  292. But actually,

  293. look at our passage in 1 Thessalonians.

  294. Look at verse 4 and 5,

  295. what Paul writes.

  296. He's now reminding them

  297. how the gospel came to them.

  298. And he says,

  299. For we know, brothers and sisters,

  300. loved by God,

  301. that he has chosen you,

  302. because our gospel came to you

  303. not only in word,

  304. but also in power,

  305. in the Holy Spirit,

  306. and with full conviction.

  307. Paul's reminding them here,

  308. what is the basis of their faith?

  309. What is their faith built upon?

  310. And the gospel himself

  311. is the reason why they became Christians,

  312. because God came to them

  313. and revealed himself to them

  314. and saved them.

  315. The scripture that Benson read to us earlier,

  316. Benson's with the youth now,

  317. Ephesians 1,

  318. God opened the eyes of their hearts

  319. that they saw God

  320. and encountered him in the gospel,

  321. and God changed them

  322. by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  323. But, you know,

  324. we humans are forgetful people.

  325. We often forget

  326. just what has happened recently.

  327. I don't know if you've ever experienced this

  328. in the office.

  329. Maybe you have somebody

  330. and you give them lots of chances

  331. and you give them lots of opportunities

  332. and you really help them along

  333. in their career.

  334. And then just a month later,

  335. they're complaining,

  336. life is so unfair.

  337. Nobody helps me.

  338. Everything's good.

  339. Everyone else gets a chance.

  340. No one gives me a chance.

  341. Has that ever happened to you?

  342. Okay, not to you.

  343. If you think earlier in this year,

  344. we went through the book of Numbers,

  345. right, as a church,

  346. and there we saw it again.

  347. God rescues his people out of Egypt.

  348. He saves them

  349. by the blood of the Lamb,

  350. brings them out of the hellhole of Egypt

  351. on the way to the promised land,

  352. and just a few weeks in,

  353. what are they saying?

  354. Oh, it was so much better there.

  355. God is so unfair.

  356. God is so unkind to us.

  357. They're forgetting just the ways

  358. that God has sustained

  359. and carried and provided for them.

  360. And friends,

  361. on this journey of faith,

  362. we need to be reminded

  363. again and again

  364. what God in His gospel

  365. has accomplished in us,

  366. especially when things get tough.

  367. And one of the signs

  368. that maybe we're not

  369. in such a good place spiritually

  370. is when we forget

  371. just where it is

  372. that we've been rescued from,

  373. just how great a salvation

  374. God has brought to us,

  375. and how God has broken

  376. into our lives.

  377. And so,

  378. look what Paul says here.

  379. He wants to remind them

  380. the bedrock foundation

  381. of their entire Christian journey

  382. does not have human origins.

  383. It's not human initiative

  384. or Paul's persuasion.

  385. It's something that was entirely of God.

  386. He says,

  387. brothers,

  388. we want you to know

  389. that He has chosen you.

  390. There's assurance and confidence

  391. that you belong to Him.

  392. You can know that with conviction.

  393. Why?

  394. Because the gospel came to you

  395. with power,

  396. with the Holy Spirit,

  397. with much conviction.

  398. God Himself was writing

  399. and speaking to you in your heart.

  400. It wasn't Paul's eloquence.

  401. It wasn't the power of persuasion.

  402. This wasn't a con job

  403. or a bait and switch situation.

  404. This wasn't some promise

  405. of prosperity or an easy life.

  406. A Christian,

  407. says the New Testament,

  408. is not someone who is religious

  409. or moral or trying to be good.

  410. A Christian is someone

  411. who's encountered God,

  412. the Holy Spirit,

  413. the power of God

  414. in the gospel,

  415. in the Lord Jesus,

  416. in a way that changes them

  417. and brings conviction.

  418. In fact,

  419. so powerful was this conviction

  420. that it did two things

  421. for the Thessalonians.

  422. I don't know if you noticed.

  423. Firstly,

  424. it made them embrace suffering

  425. and hardship and affliction.

  426. You see that?

  427. Look at verse 6.

  428. He says here,

  429. for you received the word

  430. in much affliction

  431. with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

  432. When God's word came to them,

  433. the power of the Spirit,

  434. they were utterly convinced,

  435. even though they knew

  436. it was going to cost them dearly.

  437. In fact,

  438. later on in,

  439. I think it's in chapter 3,

  440. Paul writes this

  441. and he says the same thing to them.

  442. He says,

  443. this is 3 verse 3.

    Isaiah 3:3

  444. He says,

  445. you yourselves know

  446. that we were destined

  447. for the suffering

  448. because when we were with you,

  449. we kept on telling you beforehand

  450. you were to suffer much affliction.

  451. Such was the life-changing power

  452. of the gospel

  453. that these guys encountered,

  454. even though they knew

  455. that they were going to suffer

  456. and be persecuted

  457. and be thrown in jail

  458. and arrested

  459. and suffer for their faith,

  460. following Jesus

  461. was not going to make

  462. their lives easier

  463. because they had met Jesus,

  464. they had encountered God

  465. in the gospel.

  466. What else could they do?

  467. They believed

  468. and so they followed him.

  469. It's kind of like when

  470. in the gospels,

  471. I think it's in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  472. Jesus,

  473. at one point,

  474. lots of people

  475. are leaving Jesus

  476. and they say,

  477. we are done with this Jesus guy

  478. and Jesus turns to his disciples

  479. and says,

  480. what about you?

  481. Are you going to leave me as well?

  482. And Peter says,

  483. you have the words of life.

  484. Where else must we go?

  485. We know it's going to be costly.

  486. We know it's dangerous

  487. but what else can we do?

  488. You are the Messiah

  489. and Paul says the same thing here.

  490. They've encountered God.

  491. God has changed

  492. and the gospels come to them.

  493. What else are they going to do?

  494. But notice the other thing here.

  495. Look at what else happened

  496. when they encountered

  497. the message of Jesus.

  498. Look at verse 9.

  499. Paul writes here

  500. and he says,

  501. for they themselves report

  502. the kind of reception

  503. we had amongst you,

  504. how you turn to God

  505. from idols

  506. to serve the true

  507. and living God.

  508. Now we may think,

  509. okay,

  510. so they gave up the Roman

  511. and the Greek gods

  512. and they became followers

  513. of Jesus.

  514. People change religion

  515. all the time.

  516. Big deal.

  517. But actually in the Bible,

  518. idols is always

  519. about a deep-seated

  520. security and identity.

  521. It's what we put our hope

  522. and our confidence

  523. and our security

  524. for the future in.

  525. The idols,

  526. when the Bible talks

  527. about idols,

  528. it's not just statues.

  529. It's the idols of our hearts.

  530. It's the things

  531. that we look to

  532. for a sense of self-identity

  533. and self-worth

  534. and security

  535. and hope for the future.

  536. It's why the Bible says

  537. that when things go wrong

  538. in our life,

  539. yes,

  540. it's disappointing.

  541. But when our idols

  542. are challenged

  543. or touched,

  544. it can infuriate us.

  545. It can crush us.

  546. In fact,

  547. that's actually what happened

  548. in Acts 17, right?

  549. Paul goes

  550. and he preaches the gospel

  551. and some people say,

  552. oh,

  553. I'm not so sure.

  554. But some people

  555. are so threatened

  556. that they want to kill

  557. these guys.

  558. Why?

  559. Because the idols

  560. of their hearts

  561. have been threatened.

  562. Well,

  563. look what happens here.

  564. Paul tells these Thessalonians

  565. that when the gospel came,

  566. it wasn't moralistic self-help.

  567. It wasn't human persuasion.

  568. God's predestining,

  569. electing love,

  570. being poured in their hearts

  571. by the Holy Spirit

  572. so changed them,

  573. it recalibrated

  574. the things that they lived for,

  575. the things they found

  576. their hope

  577. and their identity

  578. and their security

  579. and their well-being in.

  580. It recalibrated

  581. everything they trusted

  582. and what is most important to them,

  583. even at the cost

  584. of great persecution.

  585. So,

  586. here's the question for us.

  587. Friends,

  588. has the gospel come to you

  589. in that kind of way?

  590. Is your Christian faith

  591. built on the bedrock

  592. of the gospel

  593. or is it just

  594. religious moralism,

  595. trying to be a good person,

  596. trying to improve your life

  597. in some way?

  598. Friends,

  599. it's very easy

  600. to be religious

  601. and think you're a Christian.

  602. It's one thing

  603. to come to church

  604. and think,

  605. yeah,

  606. I'm a Christian,

  607. but have you encountered

  608. the living God

  609. in a way

  610. that has challenged

  611. and dismantled

  612. the idols of your heart

  613. in a way

  614. that you can say,

  615. persecution,

  616. suffering,

  617. I know what I believe.

  618. Have you encountered God

  619. in the power

  620. of the Holy Spirit

  621. in a way

  622. that has changed you

  623. and anchored you

  624. and solidified you?

  625. Paul wants them

  626. to know

  627. how the gospel

  628. came to them

  629. and changed them.

  630. But that's not all

  631. Paul wants them to know.

  632. He also wants to show them

  633. how the gospel

  634. has been at work in them.

  635. So,

  636. look at verse 2

  637. and 3 with me.

  638. Paul wants to see

  639. how the gospel

  640. has not only

  641. come to them

  642. but been at work

  643. in them.

  644. Verse 2 and 3,

  645. Paul writes this,

  646. he says,

  647. we give thanks to God

  648. always for all of you,

  649. constantly mentioning you

  650. in our prayers,

  651. remembering before

  652. our God and Father

  653. your work of faith,

  654. your labor of love,

  655. your steadfastness

  656. of hope

  657. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  658. Now,

  659. I hope you recognize

  660. there the threefold

  661. kind of foundation

  662. Christian virtues

  663. that Christians

  664. have spoken about

  665. for hundreds of years.

  666. Faith,

  667. hope,

  668. and love,

  669. right?

  670. Okay,

  671. the Bible talks about

  672. these three things often.

  673. John Calvin said

  674. this is the briefest

  675. definition of true Christianity,

  676. faith,

  677. hope,

  678. and love.

  679. But Paul here

  680. isn't encouraging them

  681. to pursue these things.

  682. He's not saying,

  683. right,

  684. now that you've become Christians,

  685. I'm sorry I'm no longer there

  686. but let me give you

  687. some advice.

  688. I want you to pursue

  689. faith,

  690. hope,

  691. and love.

  692. If you can do

  693. those three things,

  694. you'll be a great Christian.

  695. That's not what Paul does.

  696. He's commenting

  697. on the fact that

  698. he sees this

  699. at work in them already.

  700. He's heard from Timothy.

  701. Timothy has come back

  702. and he said,

  703. let me tell you

  704. about the Thessalonians.

  705. They overflow in faith.

  706. They are bounding in love.

  707. They are steadfast in hope.

  708. He's commending

  709. what he sees in them.

  710. And the New Testament

  711. constantly tells us

  712. that what indicates

  713. an authentic faith

  714. and an authentic

  715. Christian church

  716. is not external

  717. behavior necessarily.

  718. It's not,

  719. definitely not how nice

  720. a building is

  721. or how good looking

  722. Alan and the people

  723. in Stager

  724. or how wonderful

  725. the kids' ministry are,

  726. as wonderful as they are.

  727. What indicates

  728. a true and authentic

  729. church

  730. and a true and authentic

  731. faith

  732. is something far more

  733. internal.

  734. It's these foundational values.

  735. It's genuine faith

  736. and trust in God.

  737. It's steadfast hope

  738. in the midst of

  739. opposition and persecution.

  740. It's an authentic love

  741. for those that are

  742. different from us,

  743. maybe even those

  744. that rub us the wrong way.

  745. But notice these virtues,

  746. these characteristics,

  747. they aren't in a vacuum.

  748. They're not just random

  749. faith, hope, and love.

  750. What does Paul say?

  751. He says,

  752. I remember before

  753. our God and Father

  754. your work of faith,

  755. your labor of love,

  756. your steadfastness of hope

  757. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  758. or by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  759. It's the result of knowing

  760. and encountering Jesus

  761. and trusting and loving

  762. the Lord Jesus

  763. that these things

  764. will be birthed in them.

  765. Belief in the Lord Jesus

  766. that doesn't grow faith

  767. and hope

  768. and love in us

  769. is questionable at best.

  770. But notice something else here.

  771. These virtues

  772. are productive virtues

  773. or they are outward focused.

  774. They do something

  775. in the people

  776. who inhabit,

  777. in whom they inhabit.

  778. These aren't just

  779. philosophical ideas

  780. or religious ideas.

  781. No one went to a Bible study

  782. and said,

  783. how should we learn

  784. to have more faith

  785. and hope and love?

  786. These virtues

  787. actually do something

  788. in the people.

  789. They are gritty.

  790. They are earthy.

  791. They are practical.

  792. Look at what Paul writes here.

  793. He says,

  794. he commends them

  795. because their faith

  796. has resulted in hard work.

  797. They're not being lazy.

  798. Their faith has actually

  799. propelled them

  800. to work hard.

  801. He says,

  802. your love

  803. has prompted them

  804. to labor

  805. or serve

  806. those around them.

  807. And their hope

  808. has led to endurance

  809. and steadfastness

  810. even in the midst

  811. of persecution

  812. and hardship.

  813. And Paul's point here

  814. is,

  815. see what the gospel

  816. has done in you.

  817. Jesus Christ came to you.

  818. This wasn't just

  819. religious teaching.

  820. It's done something

  821. in you.

  822. It's produced work in you.

  823. It's changed your hearts.

  824. See how differently

  825. you love one another.

  826. See how you serve

  827. one another.

  828. See with what perseverance

  829. and endurance you have

  830. because God's word,

  831. the gospel,

  832. has done a work in you.

  833. And Paul actually says

  834. the same thing

  835. in chapter 2.

  836. If you've got your Bible,

  837. look at verse 13.

  838. He says,

  839. and we thank God

  840. constantly for this,

  841. that when you received

  842. the word of God,

  843. that's the gospel,

  844. which you heard from us,

  845. you accepted it

  846. not as the word of man,

  847. but what it really is,

  848. the word of God,

  849. which is at work in you.

  850. The Greek word for

  851. at work there

  852. is the word

  853. where we get our

  854. English word energy.

  855. I don't know how

  856. to pronounce it in Greek,

  857. but it's the same root word.

  858. We get our word energy.

  859. This gospel has a power,

  860. a dynamic to it

  861. that is an energy

  862. that actually does

  863. something in us

  864. and works in us.

  865. And Paul says

  866. to these Thessalonians,

  867. how do you know

  868. your faith is authentic?

  869. Well, it's actually

  870. changing you.

  871. It's making you

  872. more gracious,

  873. more loving,

  874. more faithful,

  875. more steadfast.

  876. And all this

  877. without the founders

  878. of the church.

  879. You know,

  880. the church was started

  881. and three weeks later,

  882. the planting founding pastor

  883. said,

  884. we're out of here.

  885. You know,

  886. Tobin Miller started

  887. Watermark 16 years ago

  888. and was here for

  889. five and a half years

  890. and did a great job

  891. and then moved back

  892. to the U.S.

  893. Laid a wonderful foundation.

  894. But imagine Tobin came in.

  895. Who was here

  896. when Watermark was started?

  897. Okay,

  898. Asken,

  899. Celeste,

  900. the Laos,

  901. I think,

  902. Brian and Grace,

  903. yeah,

  904. Soda.

  905. Imagine,

  906. Henry,

  907. imagine three weeks

  908. Tobin says,

  909. okay,

  910. we've got to start

  911. this church,

  912. Watermark Church

  913. and then three weeks later,

  914. okay,

  915. best of luck guys,

  916. I'm out of here

  917. and leaves.

  918. And without the founders,

  919. without the pastors,

  920. without the leaders,

  921. here is a church

  922. that is abundant.

  923. Why?

  924. Because the church

  925. wasn't based on the leaders

  926. on any human wisdom

  927. but God,

  928. the gospel,

  929. was at work in them

  930. because even in their absence,

  931. the gospel continued

  932. to work in them.

  933. Yes,

  934. their initial acceptance

  935. of the message of Jesus

  936. was an act of faith

  937. but even now,

  938. in the midst of opposition

  939. and persecution

  940. and prison,

  941. they continued in the faith

  942. as the gospel

  943. did its work in them.

  944. One scholar called Gene Green

  945. writes this,

  946. he says,

  947. this Christian faith

  948. was not a philosophical discourse

  949. on the way

  950. to the virtuous life

  951. or self-help seminar

  952. on how to overcome

  953. personal issues

  954. as it is in our day.

  955. This was the word of God,

  956. the power of God,

  957. the presence of God,

  958. the person of God

  959. in verbal form,

  960. powerfully transforming

  961. their lives.

  962. So friends,

  963. can you see the gospel

  964. at work in you?

  965. Have you seen God

  966. by the power of the Spirit

  967. changing you,

  968. being at work in you?

  969. Do you see evidence

  970. of growing in faith

  971. and hope and love?

  972. Is your faith productive,

  973. causing you to love others,

  974. serve others?

  975. Are you growing

  976. in steadfastness

  977. and perseverance

  978. in the midst of difficulty

  979. and opposition?

  980. One of the things

  981. that I love

  982. about this church,

  983. the very best church

  984. in the whole world,

  985. it's not our nice venue,

  986. as nice as it is,

  987. except the mom's room

  988. is a little bit full

  989. at the moment.

  990. Sorry, Annabelle.

  991. It's not the fancy leaders.

  992. One of the things

  993. we've said again and again

  994. is we're not trying

  995. to be a fancy church.

  996. We're not trying

  997. to be a mega church.

  998. We're not trying

  999. to be a popular church.

  1000. We want to be

  1001. an authentic church.

1002. I look around the room

  1003. and I see faces

  1004. of people who,

1005. over the last nine years,

1006. God is at work in you.

  1007. I see your love

  1008. growing more and more.

  1009. I see your faith

  1010. holding on to Jesus

  1011. when it's been hard.

  1012. I see your steadfastness

  1013. and your perseverance

1014. when it would have been

1015. so easy to give up

  1016. and walk away.

1017. God is at work in you.

1018. It may not be fancy.

1019. It may not have a billboard.

1020. Your name might not be

  1021. on lights.

  1022. God, by the gospel,

1023. is at work in us.

  1024. See what the gospel

  1025. has accomplished in you.

1026. Well, there's one last thing

1027. that Paul wants us to see

1028. and he wants us to see

  1029. how the gospel

  1030. is continuing to work

  1031. not just in us

  1032. but through us.

1033. The gospel comes in us

1034. and then works through us.

1035. And so look at this.

1036. Paul has this final encouragement.

1037. Look at verse 5 to 8 with me.

1038. He says here, verse 5,

1039. Our gospel came to you,

  1040. then verse 6,

1041. and you became imitators of us

  1042. and of the Lord

1043. for you received the word

  1044. in much affliction

1045. with the joy of the Holy Spirit

1046. so that you became an example

  1047. to all the believers

  1048. in Macedonia and Achaia.

1049. For not only has the word

  1050. of the Lord

  1051. sounded forth from you

  1052. in Macedonia and Achaia,

1053. but your faith in God

  1054. has gone forth everywhere

1055. so that we need not say

  1056. anything about you.

  1057. Now, notice two things

  1058. in this section.

  1059. Notice how firstly

1060. the gospel came to them,

  1061. they received it,

1062. and then the word of forth

  1063. sounded forth.

1064. Okay, so the gospel came,

  1065. they absorbed it,

  1066. received it,

1067. it did a work in them,

1068. and then it went out

  1069. from them.

  1070. And that's the way

  1071. it always is.

  1072. The gospel came,

1073. but it didn't stop with them.

  1074. They didn't say,

  1075. Oh, it's so nice.

  1076. We saved.

  1077. Wonderful.

1078. We're going to go to heaven.

1079. Actually, it came to them

1080. and then it went out.

1081. And God worked through them

  1082. to others.

1083. And so that all the believers

  1084. in Macedonia and Achaia,

  1085. these two Roman provinces,

  1086. heard about their faith

  1087. and were encouraged

  1088. and strengthened.

1089. Their faith was a witness

  1090. to others.

1091. But notice something else here,

1092. that each time Paul speaks

  1093. about how the gospel

  1094. came to them,

  1095. there's an example there.

  1096. So he says,

1097. our gospel came to you

1098. and you became imitators of us.

  1099. You received the word

1100. and then you became an example

  1101. to the believers.

1102. The word sounded forth from you

  1103. and your faith

  1104. or your witness,

  1105. your example sounded forth

  1106. and went forth everywhere.

1107. So as the gospel came to them,

  1108. it changed them

1109. and then it went out from them.

1110. And every time Paul speaks

  1111. about the word,

  1112. the gospel came,

1113. it did something in them

  1114. and they became examples

  1115. or worthy of imitation.

1116. Now, what does that tell us?

  1117. Friends, it tells us

  1118. that genuine, authentic faith,

1119. it may be deeply personal,

1120. it's my faith in Jesus,

  1121. but it's never private.

  1122. It never just stays

  1123. with me and Jesus.

  1124. It's one, it's communal.

1125. So my faith in Jesus

  1126. hopefully is a blessing

1127. to you and everyone else,

1128. but also to the city out there.

  1129. Our faith in Jesus

1130. doesn't just stay with us.

  1131. It comes to us

1132. and then it goes through us

  1133. to both our community,

  1134. our family,

  1135. to our city

1136. and to the ends of the earth.

  1137. And just think about,

1138. think about this in the Bible.

1139. Think about in Genesis 12.

  1140. God says to Abraham,

  1141. I will bless you.

  1142. Five times.

  1143. I will bless you.

  1144. I'll bless you.

  1145. I'll bless you.

  1146. I will bless you.

  1147. I will bless you.

  1148. And then he says,

1149. and you will be a blessing

  1150. to the whole world.

  1151. Now, of course,

  1152. he's talking about how

  1153. Jesus the Messiah

1154. is going to come through him,

  1155. through his descendants

  1156. and that will bless

  1157. the whole world.

1158. But God's blessing to Abraham

  1159. didn't stop with Abraham.

  1160. It went through Abraham

  1161. to the whole world.

  1162. Well, think about

1163. what God says to Israel.

1164. Israel, you are my chosen people.

1165. I have set my love upon you.

  1166. I have elected you

  1167. from before the foundations

  1168. of the world.

1169. Now you go be a light

  1170. to the nations,

1171. to the ends of the earth.

  1172. Bring my light

  1173. to the Gentiles.

  1174. Well, think about

  1175. what Jesus says

  1176. to the disciples

  1177. in Acts chapter one.

  1178. Wait here in Jerusalem

  1179. for the Holy Spirit

  1180. to come upon you,

1181. the promise from my Father.

1182. And you will be my witnesses

  1183. in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria

1184. to the ends of the earth.

1185. When God works in us,

1186. it's never meant to stop with us.

  1187. It goes through us.

  1188. God's work through us.

1189. And so what does that look like?

  1190. Friends, maybe it means

  1191. opening up your home,

  1192. inviting a student

  1193. or a youth

  1194. or a young adult

1195. that maybe doesn't have family

  1196. in Hong Kong

  1197. around for a meal

  1198. and just loving them,

  1199. blessing them.

  1200. Maybe it means

  1201. coming to church early,

  1202. looking for who's

  1203. who's had a tough week,

1204. coming and just encouraging them,

  1205. sitting with them,

  1206. praying with them.

  1207. I saw a few months ago

1208. a lady came to church

1209. who had just lost a daughter.

  1210. Absolute tragedy.

  1211. Came 15 minutes early,

  1212. was sitting by herself.

  1213. Traumatic experience

1214. of having had to bury her daughter.

  1215. And someone else

  1216. in the congregation

  1217. wasn't serving,

  1218. wasn't on duty,

1219. just came and sat next to them

1220. and spoke and prayed with them.

  1221. What an amazing blessing.

1222. Just coming to church early

  1223. to serve and bless

  1224. those around them.

  1225. Friends, maybe it means

  1226. reaching out to somebody

  1227. in the community,

  1228. getting to know them,

  1229. praying with them,

  1230. meeting up with them.

  1231. Maybe it means

  1232. serving in kids ministry,

  1233. joining the army

  1234. of kids ministry

  1235. or youth ministry

  1236. or students ministry,

  1237. shaping the faith

  1238. and the lives

  1239. of the next generation.

  1240. Maybe it means

1241. serving with our mission partners,

  1242. sons and daughters,

  1243. inner city ministry,

  1244. adopting a compassion

  1245. to national child.

  1246. At the very least,

  1247. praying for the members

  1248. of your CG,

  1249. blessing them,

1250. that God's work in you

  1251. can flow through you

  1252. to those around you.

1253. As we come to a close,

1254. I want to just tell

  1255. one brief story.

  1256. Something that happened

  1257. this week.

1258. A couple of years ago,

1259. we had a wonderful member

  1260. of Watermark.

  1261. His name was Dave.

  1262. And Dave left Watermark

  1263. six years ago

  1264. to move to Taiwan.

  1265. And he married

  1266. a fantastic lady,

  1267. Julie.

  1268. They had a child

  1269. and they moved back

  1270. to the U.S.

1271. and Dave was a great member

  1272. of the Watermark Church.

  1273. But Dave tragically

  1274. this year passed away.

  1275. A tragic accident

  1276. and he passed away

  1277. in the U.S.

  1278. And some members

  1279. of Watermark,

  1280. particularly Sam and Joe

  1281. and Henry and Carla

  1282. and Edie and Joyce,

  1283. decided we're going to

  1284. arrange a memorial service

1285. for him here in Hong Kong.

  1286. I know he doesn't have

  1287. any family here,

1288. but he's got other friends here.

  1289. Let's arrange

  1290. a memorial service.

  1291. And they arranged

  1292. a memorial service.

  1293. And not only that,

  1294. they raised some funds

  1295. for his wife

  1296. and his son.

  1297. And just really blessed

  1298. and remembered Dave.

1299. Well, the family of Dave

  1300. was so touched

  1301. that they wrote

  1302. a letter to us

  1303. at Watermark this week

  1304. just to thank us

1305. for the love and care

1306. that we had shown to Dave.

1307. And I want to just read

1308. a couple of lines from it.

1309. This is what Dave's father wrote.

  1310. It's a bit longer,

1311. but he just says this.

  1312. A few quotes.

  1313. Ultimately,

1314. I think we are grateful

  1315. for one primary reason.

  1316. Watermark was being

  1317. a true church

1318. in ways that we really see

  1319. in today's world.

  1320. We saw the kindness

  1321. of Christ

1322. in ways that surprised us

1323. through the body of Christ

  1324. in the time

  1325. of great personal darkness

  1326. and loss.

  1327. You saw Dave.

  1328. You cared for him

  1329. as a church.

  1330. You pointed him

  1331. to his Savior.

  1332. You appreciated

1333. his role in the body

1334. and you made him know that.

  1335. As much as sometimes

  1336. he struggled,

  1337. he still had worth

  1338. and was welcomed

  1339. into your fellowship.

  1340. We're particularly grateful

  1341. for Chris Thornton

1342. who showed such great love

  1343. and care for Dave.

  1344. Dave always said

  1345. he had never met

  1346. a truer Christian man

  1347. than Chris.

1348. We hope that all of you know

  1349. that your love

  1350. and care

  1351. was not in vain.

1352. It's one of those rare things

1353. for which we can be

  1354. eternally grateful.

  1355. Friends,

1356. the mark of a true

  1357. and authentic church.

  1358. Friends,

  1359. do you ever question

  1360. your faith?

1361. Do you ever have doubts

  1362. arise?

  1363. Does persecution,

  1364. opposition,

  1365. difficulty,

  1366. disappointments

1367. make you have a question

  1368. whether this whole

  1369. Jesus thing is genuine?

  1370. Authentic faith

  1371. is not necessarily fancy.

1372. It may not be popular.

1373. It may not be big.

1374. You don't need to save

1375. the world or plan a church.

1376. You don't need to have

1377. a certain type of personality.

1378. You don't need to be outgoing.

  1379. Authentic faith

1380. is faith in the true

  1381. and living God.

  1382. It's the gospel

1383. being at work in you.

  1384. It's the gospel

1385. being at work through you

1386. to bless and serve others.

1387. May that be true of you.

1388. May that be true of us.

  1389. Let's pray together.

  1390. Lord Jesus,

1391. we look at this passage

  1392. 2,000 years old.

1393. This letter from a man

  1394. to a church

  1395. and simple church

  1396. in Thessalonica.

  1397. God,

1398. we want this to be true of us.

  1399. We want,

  1400. Lord,

  1401. for the gospel

  1402. to come to us

  1403. in power,

  1404. in the Holy Spirit

  1405. with much conviction.

  1406. We want to be

  1407. the kind of church

  1408. where you, God,

1409. are at work in us

1410. but not just in us

  1411. and work through us.

  1412. Lord,

  1413. we want our faith

  1414. to resound forth

  1415. all across Asia.

  1416. We pray.

1417. Help it to be so.

1418. May that be true of us.

  1419. Pour out your spirit

  1420. upon us.

  1421. Lord,

1422. I pray for those of us

  1423. that have doubts

  1424. and questions,

  1425. those of us

  1426. who have faced

  1427. disappointment

  1428. and wonder

  1429. whether our faith

  1430. is genuine.

  1431. Oh, God,

  1432. reach out to us.

  1433. Pour out your spirit

1434. and pour out your love

  1435. into our hearts.

  1436. We pray

  1437. in your wonderful

  1438. and gracious name.

  1439. Amen.
