  1. Then Jesus told his disciples,

  2. in the glory of his Father,

  3. and then he will repay each person

  4. according to what he has done.

  5. Truly, I say to you,

  6. there are some standing here

  7. who will not taste death

  8. until they see the Son of Man

  9. coming in his kingdom.

  10. Amen.

  11. This is God's holy word.

  12. It's great to be with you tonight.

  13. If you notice in the bulletin,

  14. the title is a little bit awkward.

  15. It kind of went to a different line.

  16. I think when I first picked up the title,

  17. it was like,

  18. what does it profit a man, dot, dot, dot,

  19. the ellipsis.

  20. But we'll end up putting half the question

  21. instead of the whole question.

  22. But I think it's a very important question

  23. that we're answering tonight

  24. of Jesus' question.

  25. What does it profit a man

  26. to gain the whole world,

  27. yet forfeit his soul?

  28. We all probably have this idea

  29. of what an amazing life would look like.

  30. Many of you may know,

  31. I don't know if all of you would know

  32. the name Tom Brady.

  33. Tom Brady, a lot of you,

  34. some of you,

  35. yeah, as American football players,

  36. many of you know I love American football,

  37. coach at the University of Edinburgh,

  38. American football team.

  39. Tom Brady is considered

  40. maybe the greatest NFL player

  41. to have ever played.

  42. He won like seven Super Bowls,

  43. just retired after 23 years,

  44. not long, a couple years ago.

  45. Three MVPs.

  46. There was actually,

  47. there's a show in the U.S.

  48. called 60 Minutes,

  49. and it's like an hour long,

  50. 60 Minutes, clever name,

  51. where they're interviewing people,

  52. special stories,

  53. those kind of things.

  54. Well, after he'd won

  55. his third Super Bowl,

  56. he'd just signed

  57. this massive $60 million contract,

  58. which in 2005

  59. was a whole lot of money.

  60. He was,

  61. his partner was a supermodel

  62. that many of you may know

  63. named Giselle.

  64. He had everything

  65. that you would consider

  66. like a fulfilling life.

  67. He had money, fame,

  68. beautiful woman,

  69. family,

  70. this great, incredible

  71. pinnacle of his career.

  72. He actually went on

  73. to have an even better career.

  74. And as they're interviewing him,

  75. they're asking him

  76. about these things,

  77. and he says,

  78. to me, I look at this and say,

  79. there's got to be more

  80. to life than this.

  81. You should really go look

  82. to YouTube and look this up,

  83. Tom Brady 60 Minutes.

  84. It's really sad in some ways,

  85. but also very insightful

  86. that here you are

  87. seeing a guy

  88. who has reached the pinnacle

  89. of everything that we would say

  90. is an amazing life.

  91. And he's like,

  92. there's got to be more

  93. to life than this.

  94. And the interviewer actually asked him,

  95. well, what do you think that is?

  96. He said, I wish I knew.

  97. And we're just like,

  98. oh, we do know.

  99. We know what your soul

  100. is crying out for.

  101. But he's saying,

  102. there's got to be more

  103. to life than this.

  104. And this really hits

  105. on what Jesus is talking

  106. about here with his question.

  107. What does it profit a man

  108. to gain the whole world

  109. and yet forfeit his soul?

  110. Why did Jesus ask this question?

  111. Well, if we look at the context,

  112. the setting here,

  113. Jesus has fed the 5,000.

  114. He's walked on water.

  115. He's performed a bunch

  116. of miracles.

  117. He fed 4,000 more.

  118. And then it's quite interesting.

  119. At the beginning of chapter 16,

  120. it says the Pharisees

  121. and Sadducees came up to Jesus

  122. asking him for a sign from heaven.

  123. So after he's done

  124. all of these things,

  125. they're like,

  126. but show us a sign from heaven

  127. that would authenticate your message.

  128. It's like, seriously?

  129. Sometimes evidence

  130. for Jesus' identity

  131. is just not enough for people.

  132. And there will always be skeptics,

  133. but they have witnessed,

  134. they've seen,

  135. and they're asking for a sign.

  136. And later Jesus asks his disciples,

  137. who do people say that I am?

  138. And they tell them the rumors.

  139. Some say you're John the Baptist,

  140. come back from the dead.

  141. Some think you're Elijah or Jeremiah

  142. or some other prophet.

  143. And then he responds,

  144. but who do you say that I am?

  145. Now that could have been

  146. the question we talked about tonight,

  147. question Jesus asked,

  148. maybe the most important question,

  149. who do you say that I am?

  150. And in that moment,

  151. Peter says,

  152. you are the Christ,

  153. the son of the living God.

  154. And it says in verse 21

  155. of chapter 16 in Matthew,

  156. from that time,

  157. Jesus began to show the disciples

  158. that he must go to Jerusalem

  159. and suffer many things.

  160. Jesus must go and lose his life.

  161. And Peter actually rebukes him for that.

  162. He says, whoa, whoa, whoa,

  163. this will never happen to you.

  164. I think you're misunderstanding

  165. the scriptures, Jesus.

  166. Now he didn't say that,

  167. but that's what he's implying.

  168. You're the Messiah.

  169. You're going to go to Jerusalem

  170. and deliver us,

  171. not go to lose your life.

  172. What are you talking about?

  173. And Jesus then rebukes him

  174. and says, get behind me, Satan.

  175. And then he says something

  176. that's very important

  177. for our passage in verse 23.

  178. For you're not setting your mind

  179. on the things of God,

  180. but on the things of man.

  181. And if we're honest with ourselves,

  182. we often many times

  183. can recognize this in our own lives

  184. where it's like,

  185. I know, I wish I was setting my mind

  186. more on the things of God.

  187. I'm thinking more

  188. about the things in this life,

  189. the things of man.

  190. We're all tempted to do this.

  191. It's something that's really

  192. our default mode

  193. to really more focus

  194. on the things of man,

  195. the things in this world.

  196. We recognize this often.

  197. We want this to be different.

  198. But that's the setup

  199. for Jesus' response here

  200. in his question.

  201. What does it profit a man

  202. to gain the whole world

  203. and yet forfeit his soul?

  204. Or what can a man give

  205. in exchange for his soul?

  206. When he's asking this question,

  207. he's actually giving us

  208. the rationale for his statement

  209. about the nature

  210. of being his disciple.

  211. So if you're trying

  212. to gain the whole world,

  213. you're not going to be

  214. setting your mind

  215. on the things of God

  216. because his disciples,

  217. he says,

  218. to follow him,

  219. he says,

  220. you must deny yourself,

  221. take up his cross,

  222. and follow me.

  223. To be his disciple,

  224. you must deny himself.

  225. We have to learn

  226. to say no to ourselves.

  227. This word literally means

  228. to refuse or to resist

  229. or to reject ourselves.

  230. It's the idea

  231. of forgetting oneself,

  232. to lose sight of yourself

  233. and your own interests.

  234. It's like,

  235. I'm an afterthought.

  236. But it's actually,

  237. denying yourself

  238. is the same way later

  239. as we'll see Peter

  240. is denying Jesus

  241. where he says,

  242. I do not know this man.

  243. It's kind of looking

  244. at ourselves and saying,

  245. I don't know this person.

  246. It's an,

  247. I'm an afterthought.

  248. I'm not the main thing,

  249. the center of the universe

  250. like my default nature

  251. thinks I am.

  252. John Stott says,

  253. this isn't just denying

  254. things to myself

  255. like to say no to sweets,

  256. which I can have

  257. a problem doing,

  258. but it's to deny myself

  259. to myself.

  260. To deny myself

  261. to myself.

  262. It's denying my agenda,

  263. denying trying to gratify

  264. the pleasures

  265. that are selfish.

  266. Instead,

  267. I must think about others,

  268. put others before myself.

  269. It's where we come

  270. and say,

  271. here's my plans,

  272. Lord.

  273. I lay them down

  274. on the altar

  275. to present them

  276. before you

  277. and say,

  278. not my will,

  279. but your will

  280. be done.

  281. To be his disciple,

  282. we must deny himself,

  283. it says.

  284. And then it says

  285. we must take up his cross.

  286. The cross,

  287. as we know,

  288. is a symbol of shame

  289. and humiliation.

  290. And it's really hard

  291. to imagine

  292. what they would have

  293. been thinking

  294. when they heard this

  295. because they did

  296. understand the imagery.

  297. They understood

  298. that the cross

  299. was a convicted prisoner

  300. being marched

  301. outside of town,

  302. being led to pay

  303. what was called

  304. the supreme penalty.

  305. It was a slave's death,

  306. a traitor's death,

  307. some common euphemisms

  308. for taking up your cross

  309. or for the crucifixion

  310. was called

  311. the extreme penalty,

  312. the most severe punishment,

  313. and there were Latin words

  314. that are used

  315. for these things

  316. that I didn't dare

  317. try to bring in

  318. because I don't know Latin.

  319. But the slave's punishment,

  320. the wretched death,

  321. all of these things

  322. that they would have understood

  323. when they heard

  324. Jesus saying

  325. you must take up

  326. your cross.

  327. Paul talks about

  328. what this looks like

  329. in Galatians 5, 24

  330. when he says,

  331. and those who belong

  332. to Christ

  333. have crucified

  334. the flesh

  335. with its passions

  336. and desires.

  337. So it's where we put

  338. our sinful selfishness

  339. on the cross

  340. and say,

  341. not my will

  342. but your will be done,

  343. dying to these desires,

  344. dying to these passions,

  345. crucifying them.

  346. And also,

  347. I think one of the reasons

  348. he said that Jesus said this

  349. is because crucifixion

  350. was a slow death.

  351. And so being his disciple,

  352. taking up his cross,

  353. is learning to die

  354. to the flesh,

  355. which is a slow

  356. and painful process.

  357. It's a slow death.

  358. Luke even adds

  359. when he records this

  360. that Jesus said

  361. that he must take up

  362. his cross daily.

  363. Our default mode

  364. is to wake up

  365. and to put ourselves

  366. back on the throne

  367. instead of back on a cross.

  368. And Luke says

  369. we must,

  370. he records it

  371. as we must take up

  372. our cross daily,

  373. learning to say

  374. it is not about me

  375. but embracing a life

  376. that is about Jesus,

  377. another's agenda

  378. instead of my own.

  379. So if you would come

  380. after me,

  381. if anyone would come

  382. after me,

  383. let him deny himself,

  384. take up his cross

  385. and follow me.

  386. Follow me is

  387. I go where you go,

  388. Jesus.

  389. I do what you do.

  390. This is all about

  391. following our Lord

  392. and doing as he commanded.

  393. And in following him,

  394. we find our true lives.

  395. We find our true selves.

  396. Trading our agenda

  397. for a lasting

  398. and better one.

  399. It's letting Jesus

  400. set the direction

  401. for our lives.

  402. That's what it means

  403. to follow him.

  404. And it's how we truly

  405. gain life.

  406. But it comes through

  407. denying and dying.

  408. I don't know where

  409. I heard that

  410. but just putting

  411. those two words together,

  412. it's actually really helpful.

  413. denying and dying.

  414. That's what it means

  415. to follow Jesus.

  416. Jesus is the Messiah.

  417. They thought the Messiah

  418. was going to come

  419. and take power

  420. but instead

  421. he is saying

  422. I must lose my life.

  423. The way of the kingdom

  424. is to lose your life

  425. so that others

  426. might find it.

  427. Jesus says

  428. whoever tries to save

  429. his life will lose it

  430. and whoever loses

  431. his life for my sake

  432. will find it.

  433. This word life here

  434. is not life

  435. where it's like

  436. breathing in and out

  437. and life as opposed

  438. to death

  439. but it's actually

  440. the word where we

  441. get the word soul

  442. or psyche.

  443. It's your very identity.

  444. Who you think you are.

  445. Your core.

  446. Your inner person.

  447. You must be willing

  448. to lose that

  449. for Jesus' sake

  450. and when you do that

  451. you truly find it.

  452. In other words

  453. for the Christian

  454. we let go of our lives

  455. and we let go

  456. of anything

  457. that we're trying

  458. to build our identities

  459. on besides Jesus

  460. besides Christ.

  461. It means that

  462. we subordinate

  463. our thinking

  464. about our own

  465. personal issues

  466. and serving ourselves

  467. subordinate that

  468. to Jesus

  469. where it's about

  470. serving Jesus

  471. his interests

  472. his agendas

  473. his thoughts

  474. obeying his commands.

  475. So whether that's

  476. our careers

  477. whether it's

  478. relationships

  479. comfort and leisure

  480. making a name

  481. for ourselves

  482. whatever we think

  483. success is

  484. it's all laying that

  485. at the feet of Jesus

  486. and say

  487. this is not about me

  488. but this is about you

  489. losing your life

  490. in order to gain it.

  491. So why would we embrace

  492. this self-denial

  493. and this self-death?

  494. And Jesus gives the answer.

  495. What would it profit you

  496. to gain the whole world

  497. and yet forfeit your soul?

  498. Or what can you give

  499. in exchange for your soul?

  500. We know that

  501. the right investment

  502. is investing

  503. in the soul.

  504. The way of the world

  505. is meaningless

  506. and vanity

  507. and yet our default mode

  508. is to go that way

  509. and so we must learn

  510. to deny ourselves

  511. take up his cross

  512. daily and follow him

  513. because

  514. what can we give

  515. in exchange for our souls?

  516. The word soul here

  517. is the exact same word

  518. that's translated life

  519. in the previous verse

  520. but often when we hear this

  521. deny yourself

  522. take up his cross

  523. follow me

  524. whoever loses his life

  525. for my sake

  526. will gain it

  527. we tend to hear this

  528. disregarding the things

  529. of the world

  530. material things

  531. and we see this

  532. as a test of our faith

  533. or maybe even

  534. a deep burden

  535. instead of understanding

  536. that he's showing us

  537. what it means

  538. to flourish

  539. to have a beautiful life

  540. to have a life

  541. that is true life

  542. indeed

  543. we hear these things

  544. about denying ourselves

  545. why is it

  546. that that is such

  547. a burden

  548. instead of Jesus

  549. saying

  550. let me show you

  551. the way to find

  552. true life

  553. because what does it

  554. profit a man

  555. to gain this whole world

  556. and yet

  557. forfeit

  558. the soul

  559. he's not trying

  560. to deprive us

  561. he's trying to show us

  562. true

  563. abundant life

  564. and Jesus gets down

  565. to the very heart

  566. of things

  567. when he says

  568. gains the whole world

  569. he's talking about

  570. when we try to gain

  571. everything the world values

  572. anything that we would

  573. set our hearts on

  574. here on this earth

  575. and you know

  576. we all

  577. dream

  578. hear stories

  579. of celebrities

  580. or musicians

  581. or whatever

  582. the famously rich people

  583. and how they've come

  584. into this wealth

  585. and we then hear

  586. how miserable they are

  587. at some point

  588. how they turn to a life

  589. maybe of drugs

  590. and alcohol

  591. or just

  592. broken relationships

  593. by the way

  594. Tom Brady and Giselle

  595. are divorced

  596. it's like we hear

  597. these stories

  598. of just

  599. relationships

  600. broken lives

  601. we hear all these things

  602. of people who've gone

  603. after the world

  604. but we're like

  605. but I think I'd do it

  606. a little bit differently

  607. I don't know that

  608. that would happen to me

  609. maybe that's the cross

  610. you should give me

  611. Jesus is

  612. seeing if I can handle

  613. wealth

  614. we just think

  615. things would be

  616. different for us

  617. but guys

  618. this is

  619. this is not a new

  620. problem

  621. I mean obviously

  622. it wasn't new

  623. with Jesus

  624. he's talking about

  625. addressing people

  626. that try to gain

  627. the whole world

  628. but in Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 2:1–11

  629. chapter 2

  630. verses 1 through 11

  631. which is attributed

  632. to Solomon

  633. who was at the time

  634. known as the world's

  635. wisest and wealthiest

  636. person

  637. this passage

  638. Ecclesiastes chapter 2

    Ecclesiastes 2:1–11

  639. verses 1 through 11

  640. Solomon says

  641. I said in my heart

  642. come now

  643. I will test you

  644. with pleasure

  645. enjoy yourself

  646. and he goes on to say

  647. that here are the things

  648. that he pursued

  649. he said

  650. I made great works

  651. I built houses

  652. and planted vineyards

  653. for myself

  654. I made myself

  655. gardens

  656. and parks

  657. and planted them

  658. with all kinds

  659. of fruit trees

  660. I made myself

  661. pools

  662. from which

  663. to water

  664. the forest

  665. of growing trees

  666. I bought male

  667. and female slaves

  668. and had slaves

  669. who were born

  670. in my house

  671. had great possessions

  672. of herds

  673. and flocks

  674. more than anyone

  675. who was before me

  676. in Jerusalem

  677. he said

  678. I also gathered

  679. for myself

  680. silver and gold

  681. and the treasure

  682. of kings

  683. and provinces

  684. I got singers

  685. both men and women

  686. I had entertainers

  687. people

  688. both

  689. and had many

  690. women and concubines

  691. the delight

  692. of the sons of man

  693. so I became great

  694. and surpassed

  695. all who were before me

  696. in Jerusalem

  697. also my wisdom

  698. remained with me

  699. and whatever my eyes

  700. desired

  701. I did not keep

  702. from them

  703. I kept my heart

  704. from no pleasure

  705. for my heart

  706. found pleasure

  707. in all my toil

  708. and this was my reward

  709. for all my toil

  710. then I considered

  711. all that my hands

  712. had done

  713. and the toil

  714. I had expended

  715. in doing it

  716. and behold

  717. all was vanity

  718. and striving

  719. after wind

  720. and there was

  721. nothing to be gained

  722. under the sun

  723. he said

  724. I went after everything

  725. I gathered anything

  726. that my heart wanted

  727. and all was vanity

  728. and striving

  729. after the wind

  730. and we don't believe

  731. that do we

  732. like we think

  733. it would be different

  734. if it was me

  735. or maybe it's just me

  736. but like we really think

  737. we would be different

  738. but yet Jesus is telling us

  739. if you try to gain

  740. the whole world

  741. you forfeit your soul

  742. and the way for true life

  743. is deny yourself

  744. take up your cross

  745. and follow me

  746. what does it profit a man

  747. to gain the whole world

  748. and yet forfeit his soul

  749. and have you ever wondered

  750. why this is the way

  751. of the kingdom

  752. the nature of the kingdom

  753. wouldn't it be possible

  754. that Jesus denies himself

  755. for us

  756. and instead of us

  757. and takes up his cross

  758. for us

  759. instead of us

  760. why did he have to call us

  761. to the same life

  762. why would he tell us

  763. that we must do this

  764. as well

  765. I think a few reasons

  766. one I think

  767. because he knows

  768. the human condition

  769. he understands

  770. our sinful nature

  771. we would pursue

  772. the things of the world

  773. at the expense

  774. of our souls

  775. if he didn't command us

  776. to do this

  777. we would twist everything

  778. and make it about us

  779. I mean

  780. have you ever been around

  781. anyone who's like

  782. we would consider

  783. a little narcissistic

  784. where they make everything

  785. about themselves

  786. miserable people

  787. to be around

  788. but yet you flip that

  789. and turn someone

  790. who is other centered

  791. someone who wants to serve

  792. who genuinely is about

  793. other people

  794. and they're amazing

  795. to be around

  796. we love those kinds

  797. of people

  798. Jesus knows

  799. when he's telling us

  800. that it's not about ourselves

  801. to not deny ourselves

  802. take up our cross

  803. and follow him

  804. that it's the way

  805. of life

  806. he also knows

  807. that

  808. this is just

  809. the nature of the kingdom

  810. because this is his nature

  811. he tells us that

  812. because when we

  813. lay down our lives

  814. for others

  815. putting needs

  816. before our own

  817. we're demonstrating

  818. God's very nature

  819. God's very heart

  820. we're displaying

  821. his glory

  822. to the world

  823. that's what he himself did

  824. that is the way of life

  825. and he knows best

  826. and then I think

  827. a third thing is

  828. he really just knows

  829. what will satisfy us

  830. he created us

  831. and he knows

  832. where true life

  833. really is

  834. and he's just telling us

  835. the way of that

  836. as a little side note

  837. I came across

  838. this article online

  839. as I was looking up

  840. something else

  841. I was like oh

  842. this is kind of appropriate

  843. the title of the article

  844. was Serving Others

  845. in Brain Health

  846. the Neurological Benefits

  847. of Altruism

  848. it sounds really interesting

  849. article

  850. it says this

  851. the effect of serving others

  852. on the human brain

  853. is more profound

  854. than most people realize

  855. altruism activates

  856. the same reward circuitry

  857. that responds to food

  858. and sex

  859. drops cortisol

  860. floods the brain

  861. with dopamine

  862. and oxytocin

  863. and in older adults

  864. measurably slows

  865. cognitive decline

  866. helping someone

  867. isn't just a nice

  868. thing to do

  869. neurologically speaking

  870. it's one of the most

  871. potent brain

  872. health interventions

  873. available to you

  874. God designed us

  875. so that even serving

  876. other people

  877. is good for our own health

  878. now they probably

  879. were thinking

  880. this is an evolutionary thing

  881. this wasn't a Christian article

  882. but Jesus

  883. when he's telling us

  884. these things

  885. he knows how we're made

  886. because he made us

  887. and he's not

  888. giving us a burden

  889. or placing on

  890. like just

  891. just take it for the team

  892. and trust me

  893. it's like no

  894. like this is the way

  895. of the kingdom

  896. and it is good

  897. and it is right

  898. and lovely

  899. and praiseworthy

  900. when we live

  901. for something

  902. beside ourselves

  903. it actually blesses us

  904. in ways that we don't

  905. even totally understand

  906. so want us to get

  907. the fact that

  908. Jesus is not being cruel

  909. or giving us

  910. a terrible burden

  911. when he calls us

  912. to deny ourselves

  913. and take us across

  914. and follow him

  915. but it's literally

  916. for our good

  917. and for his glory

  918. we feel

  919. because it's such

  920. a hard battle

  921. that it's a loss

  922. for us to follow

  923. this way

  924. but David Livingston

  925. the well-known

  926. Scotsman

  927. missionary

  928. in South Africa

  929. says this

  930. people talk

  931. of the sacrifice

  932. I made

  933. in spending

  934. much of my life

  935. in Africa

  936. is that a sacrifice

  937. which brings

  938. its own blessed reward

  939. and healthy activity

  940. the consciousness

  941. of doing good

  942. peace of mind

  943. and a bright hope

  944. of a glorious destiny

  945. hereafter

  946. away with a word

  947. in such a view

  948. and with such a thought

  949. it is emphatically

  950. no sacrifice

  951. say rather

  952. it is a privilege

  953. anxiety

  954. sickness

  955. suffering

  956. or danger

  957. now and then

  958. with a foregoing

  959. in the common conveniences

  960. and charities

  961. of this life

  962. may make us pause

  963. and cause the spirit

  964. to waver

  965. and the soul

  966. to sink

  967. but let this only

  968. be for a moment

  969. all these are nothing

  970. when compared

  971. with the glory

  972. with which will be

  973. revealed in

  974. and for us

  975. and then he says

  976. I never made

  977. a sacrifice

  978. this is what

  979. it looks like

  980. to set your mind

  981. on things above

  982. to understand

  983. that losing

  984. our life

  985. means saving it

  986. focusing on

  987. eternity

  988. is the blessed

  989. life

  990. and following

  991. the example

  992. of our Lord

  993. who lost

  994. his life

  995. emptied himself

  996. so that we

  997. could have life

  998. in his name

  999. as we've been

  1000. talking about

  1001. that being

  1002. united to Christ

  1003. means that we

  1004. have a relationship

  1005. with God

  1006. and then he calls

1007. us to do the same

1008. and that is a life

  1009. that is the opposite

  1010. of having a

  1011. superiority

  1012. mindset

  1013. but it is one

  1014. that gives us

  1015. humility

  1016. when we trade

  1017. our agendas

  1018. for his agenda

  1019. it's saying

  1020. it's not about

  1021. me

  1022. the way I

  1023. spend my time

  1024. the way I spend

  1025. my money

  1026. it is not about

  1027. me

  1028. but how can I

  1029. use these gifts

  1030. that God has

  1031. given me

  1032. to serve

  1033. and bless

  1034. others

  1035. and if you

  1036. think about it

  1037. think about how

  1038. like when we

  1039. are pursuing

  1040. the ways

  1041. of the

  1042. or the things

  1043. of this world

  1044. pursuing like

  1045. a way to

  1046. gain the world

  1047. think about

  1048. the worry

  1049. and anxiety

  1050. that causes

  1051. worry is like

  1052. saying

  1053. I think

  1054. I know

  1055. how a good

  1056. God

  1057. would

  1058. what he

  1059. would do

  1060. in this

  1061. situation

  1062. and I'm

  1063. afraid

  1064. you're just

  1065. not going

  1066. to come

  1067. through

  1068. in that

  1069. way

  1070. I mean

  1071. think about

  1072. the people

  1073. we know

  1074. that have

  1075. walked away

  1076. from the

  1077. faith

  1078. because God

  1079. didn't come

  1080. through for

  1081. them in the

  1082. way that we

  1083. thought he

  1084. should

  1085. but instead

  1086. we've got to

  1087. learn we

  1088. don't know

  1089. better than

  1090. God

  1091. so we trade

  1092. our agendas

  1093. for his

  1094. and it allows

  1095. us to say

  1096. okay God

  1097. in this

  1098. thing that's

  1099. going on

  1100. what are you

  1101. up to

  1102. what do you

  1103. want me to

  1104. learn from

  1105. this how

  1106. are you

  1107. wanting to

  1108. show yourself

  1109. to me

  1110. in a way

  1111. that we

  1112. will be

  1113. glorious

  1114. we must

  1115. learn to

  1116. set our

  1117. minds on

  1118. things of

  1119. God

  1120. not on the

  1121. things of

  1122. man as he

  1123. told Peter

  1124. and this

  1125. changes the

  1126. way we see

  1127. everything it

  1128. changes even

  1129. the way we

  1130. see suffering

  1131. which

  1132. suffering is

  1133. one of those

  1134. things that

  1135. is like

  1136. I was

  1137. actually supposed

  1138. to preach

  1139. this sermon

  1140. a few weeks

  1141. ago and

  1142. because of

  1143. some things

  1144. some crisis

  1145. going on in

  1146. our family

  1147. I'm preaching

  1148. it three weeks

  1149. later it's been

  1150. three weeks of

  1151. hard suffering

  1152. and it's very

  1153. tempting to

  1154. to doubt

  1155. the goodness

  1156. of God

  1157. to doubt

  1158. that his

  1159. way is the

  1160. best way

  1161. but in those

  1162. times we

  1163. understand that

  1164. he really knows

  1165. what's good for

  1166. us and we

  1167. can see from

  1168. his word

  1169. and when we

  1170. cling to him

  1171. and his

  1172. word that

  1173. this suffering

  1174. is producing

  1175. wisdom

  1176. it's producing

  1177. joy in ways

  1178. that we never

  1179. would have

  1180. understood

  1181. it's producing

  1182. endurance

  1183. as scripture

  1184. says

  1185. it's producing

  1186. a courage

  1187. that maybe

  1188. we needed

  1189. but it's also

  1190. producing a

  1191. humility

  1192. and we just

  1193. have to cling

  1194. to those

  1195. things and

  1196. say God

  1197. you know

  1198. what's best

  1199. more than

  1200. I do

  1201. and so I

  1202. trust you

  1203. in that

  1204. setting

  1205. our minds

  1206. on the

  1207. things of

  1208. God

  1209. not the

  1210. things of

  1211. man

  1212. changes

  1213. the way

  1214. we see

  1215. all of

  1216. life

  1217. helps us

  1218. to learn

  1219. to see

  1220. life in

  1221. the way

  1222. that he

  1223. sees it

  1224. and that's

  1225. the nature

  1226. of the

  1227. kingdom

  1228. to deny

  1229. ourselves

  1230. take up

  1231. our crosses

  1232. and follow

  1233. him

  1234. greatness

  1235. comes by

  1236. being last

  1237. saving your

  1238. life means

  1239. we lose

  1240. it

  1241. and Jesus

  1242. establishes

  1243. kingdom

  1244. by losing

  1245. his life

  1246. he calls

  1247. us to

  1248. do the

  1249. same

  1250. and this

  1251. is the

  1252. abundant

  1253. life

  1254. it is

  1255. not

  1256. drudgery

  1257. it's not

  1258. a burden

  1259. doesn't mean

  1260. it's always

  1261. easy

  1262. but it does

  1263. mean it's

  1264. good

  1265. and it

  1266. will glorify

  1267. him

  1268. and be

  1269. for our

  1270. benefit

  1271. let's

  1272. pray

  1273. father

  1274. we

  1275. we just

  1276. acknowledge

  1277. right now

  1278. together

  1279. that we

  1280. are prone

  1281. to try

  1282. to gain

  1283. the world

  1284. to try

  1285. to go

  1286. after the

  1287. ways of

  1288. this world

  1289. to find

  1290. success

  1291. in the way

  1292. of the

  1293. world

  1294. to find

  1295. success

  1296. and

  1297. even more

  1298. than that

  1299. lord

  1300. we

  1301. we wake

  1302. up

  1303. every day

  1304. wanting

  1305. to be

  1306. the center

  1307. of the

  1308. universe

  1309. to say

  1310. it's

  1311. about me

  1312. we don't

  1313. wake up

  1314. wanting

  1315. to serve

  1316. we wake

  1317. up

  1318. wanting

  1319. to be

  1320. served

  1321. and so

  1322. I pray

  1323. that you

  1324. would help

  1325. us to

  1326. cling

  1327. to you

  1328. and your

  1329. word

  1330. and the

  1331. promises

  1332. and the

  1333. wisdom

  1334. and the

  1335. goodness

  1336. of this

  1337. passage

  1338. that says

  1339. what would

  1340. it

  1341. profit

  1342. you

  1343. to gain

  1344. the whole

  1345. world

  1346. and forfeit

  1347. your soul

  1348. but instead

  1349. losing our

  1350. lives for the

  1351. sake of

  1352. really finding

  1353. it

  1354. to deny

  1355. ourselves

  1356. to take

  1357. up our

  1358. crosses

  1359. and follow

  1360. you

  1361. that is

  1362. the way

  1363. of true

  1364. life

  1365. that is

  1366. the way

  1367. to abundant

  1368. life

  1369. help us

  1370. to trust

  1371. you in

  1372. that

  1392. and we

  1393. need your

  1394. grace

  1401. in these

  1402. things

  1403. help us

  1404. to do what

  1405. you said

  1406. and set

  1407. our minds

  1408. on the

  1409. things of

  1410. God

  1411. and not

  1412. on the

  1413. things of

  1414. man

  1415. please help

  1416. us to do

  1417. this

  1418. we pray

  1419. in Jesus
