  1. If you have your Bibles, you can turn with me to Psalm 124.

  2. And we can keep our Bibles open there as we think about this Psalm,

  3. which invites us to confident trust in God's deliverance.

  4. So let's again hear God's word together.

  5. If the Lord had not been on our side, let Israel say,

  6. if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us,

  7. they would have swallowed us alive when their anger flared against us.

  8. The flood would have engulfed us.

  9. The torrent would have swept over us.

  10. The raging waters would have swept us away.

  11. Praise be to the Lord who has not let us be torn by their teeth.

  12. We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare.

  13. The snare has been broken and we have escaped.

  14. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

  15. Amen.

  16. Boys and girls, let me talk to you for just a moment.

  17. I want to begin with a story of something that happened to me a long, long time ago.

  18. So when I was in university and I was playing in one of the university sports teams,

  19. we took a trip for an away game.

  20. So we went on a minibus and I came back on the minibus,

  21. left the bus, started walking from home only to discover I'd left my keys on the bus

  22. and I'd left my wallet on the bus.

  23. And this was in the olden days before mobile phones.

  24. So panic started to set in immediately.

  25. And then I prayed.

  26. And literally, literally two minutes later,

  27. a guy from our team who lived on the other side of the city,

  28. he happened to be driving by and he stopped and he asked what the problem was.

  29. And he just happened to know,

  30. the only person in the whole team who knew where the bus driver lived,

  31. he happened to know where he lived.

  32. And the bus driver just happened to have been a little bit lazy in returning the bus.

  33. So he still had the bus and the keys and I could get my possessions again.

  34. And I was happy.

  35. And that was a narrow escape.

  36. Grand scheme of things, no big deal.

  37. But some 20 plus years later, I have never forgotten that lesson.

  38. There's a number of lessons.

  39. The lesson, God listens and God will answer our prayers.

  40. That God cares for us in the big important stuff and in the little things of life.

  41. And that was really good for my faith.

  42. And I think as we come to Psalm 124,

  43. we can all learn those lessons whatever age we are.

  44. I imagine all of us, maybe especially if we're a bit older,

  45. we can think about times when God intervened in our lives.

  46. God did something.

  47. God got involved.

  48. It might have been a really big thing.

  49. It might have been a really small thing.

  50. Here's my question.

  51. As you think about ways in your past that God intervened,

  52. what do you do with those moments and those memories?

  53. How can you make them work for your faith and for your trust?

  54. And to push it one step further,

  55. how can we make those stories work for other people's faith in God to grow too?

  56. What we have in Psalm 124 is a story of King David's escape.

  57. We're not told which of his many escapes it was,

  58. but we know it's a song of ascents of David.

  59. And David is a poet and David is a singer.

  60. And so he turns one of these acts of God's rescue into a song.

  61. And then he invites everyone within Israel to listen along and to sing

  62. so that together the people of God could share his great conclusion.

  63. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

  64. So this song is here in the Bible,

  65. and we're thinking about it this morning,

  66. so that you and I today,

  67. we might remember and rejoice in God's many rescues in our lives

  68. and ultimately the great rescue as we think about Jesus' death on the cross.

  69. Psalm 124 is one of those Psalms that has a special place in the history of God's church.

  70. We began saying together, Psalm 124 verse 8,

    Psalms 124:8

  71. John Calvin in the church in Geneva,

  72. when the Reformation happened,

  73. he used that week by week as their call to worship.

  74. Who is it that we are invited to worship together?

  75. The God who helps us, who is our maker.

  76. And he felt that the church needed a weekly reminder

  77. because in his day, the church was very much under attack.

  78. People very much wanted to shut down the message coming from Calvin's Geneva,

  79. the message of the Reformation.

  80. And so this Psalm became precious in that generation,

  81. and by God's grace,

  82. it may be precious to us too,

  83. as this Psalm helps us to see that God delivers his church from great dangers

  84. so that we might live with deep confidence in his redeeming love.

  85. So we're just going to walk through the Psalm.

  86. The first thing we're going to notice in the first couple of verses

  87. is our great Redeemer.

  88. Now notice the style of these verses,

  89. and we might call it call and response.

  90. So you have David and then a choir master beginning,

  91. if the Lord had not been on our side.

  92. And then it's as if the Psalm pauses

  93. so that David can say,

  94. sing it with me, everybody,

  95. if the Lord had not been on our side.

  96. This is for the whole church.

  97. And what David invites the whole church to do

  98. is to look back on a great deliverance that God brought

  99. and to imagine the outcome

  100. if God had been absent.

  101. If the Lord had not been on our side,

  102. how would things have been different?

  103. And so clearly, right from the beginning of this Psalm,

  104. for David and for the pilgrim people of God,

  105. the Lord is introduced as their only source of hope and help.

  106. They're not trying to reason away their rescue.

  107. Well, yeah, actually it was because we had a great military strategy.

  108. Nor is he taking credit for what properly belongs to God.

  109. David is absolutely humble, doesn't want any attention,

  110. wants it all to belong to the Lord.

  111. And nor does he minimize the salvation

  112. the way sometimes we can do.

  113. We can pray and then we get an answer

  114. and then we can begin to think,

  115. well, would that have happened even if I didn't pray?

  116. David doesn't go there.

  117. He recognizes God is at work.

  118. If the Lord had not been on our side,

  119. defeat, destruction, disaster.

  120. Now, Ian read for us from 2 Samuel 5,

  121. and you can turn back there, page 309,

  122. just to think about how this plays out

  123. in a real life deliverance from God.

  124. So just to give you the background while you're turning there,

  125. David has now been set on the throne.

  126. God's chosen king has now been recognized

  127. as king over Judah and over all Israel.

  128. And now that he sits in that place,

  129. enemies, verse 17,

  130. they hear that David had been anointed king,

  131. and so they went up in full force to search for him.

  132. So these cruel enemies we meet over and over in the Old Testament,

  133. they come on this search and destroy mission.

  134. And so David, see his response in verse 19.

  135. He doesn't call out the commanders of the army,

  136. figure out what's the plan.

  137. David inquired of the Lord,

  138. shall I go and attack the Philistines?

  139. Will you deliver them into my hands?

  140. The Lord answered him,

  141. go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines.

  142. So he is dependent on God.

  143. God, I'll go if you tell me to.

  144. God, I will go if you're going to give the victory.

  145. And look at his testimony.

  146. After he defeats the Philistines the first time,

  147. verse 20,

  148. the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.

  149. David is taking no credit.

  150. All glory and honor belongs to God.

  151. Now, verse 22,

  152. notice what happens.

  153. These Philistines who oppose God and the people of God,

  154. they come back again.

  155. And again, David's response is to pray.

  156. David inquired of the Lord.

  157. And the Lord answers,

  158. don't go straight up,

  159. but circle around and attack them in front of the poplar trees.

  160. And then this,

  161. as soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees,

  162. move quickly,

  163. because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you

  164. to strike the Philistine army.

  165. And that's what happens.

  166. And again,

  167. we see the battle belongs to the Lord.

  168. Story after story of the Old Testament.

  169. Think about the story of David as the little shepherd boy,

  170. the teenager who goes to fight against the Philistine champion,

  171. Goliath.

  172. And again,

  173. David speaks with such faith that it's evident that he is coming in the name of the Lord,

  174. and it will be the Lord who will give that great victory.

  175. Or go even further back.

  176. Go back to the time of Noah.

  177. There's another deliverance.

  178. God saved his tiny church,

  179. just Noah and his family from the flood of judgment.

  180. Or go to the book of Exodus

  181. and recognize God delivering his people from slavery in Egypt.

  182. Or go to the story of Esther.

  183. And think about how God raises Esther to the palace

  184. so he can rescue Israel from the threat of extinction.

  185. Over and over,

  186. the Old Testament declares,

  187. God the Lord is his people's redeemer.

  188. And that salvation,

  189. as we see it and experience it,

  190. it should lead to praise.

  191. And truly without God,

  192. it would be game over for God's people.

  193. And we need to recognize that's not just true of the Old Testament.

  194. In the New Testament,

  195. think about the number of times we see the apostles,

  196. where various leaders,

  197. Jewish and Roman leaders,

  198. attack and imprison them.

  199. And think about Peter being rescued from prison by an angel.

  200. Think about Paul being delivered by an earthquake.

  201. Think about the reality of the mission of the church

  202. growing and growing rapidly,

  203. despite all human opposition.

  204. Go all the way to the book of Revelation

  205. and you get this wonderful image of,

  206. yes, the church is under fire and under attack,

  207. but yes,

  208. the church is protected from Satan

  209. and from the forces of evil

  210. by the great God of heaven.

  211. And now,

  212. think of Jesus.

  213. While he walked this earth,

  214. singing Psalm 124.

  215. And if you know anything of the life of Jesus,

  216. you will probably know

  217. that he often faced anger

  218. and hostility

  219. and attacks from other people,

  220. both words and actions,

  221. and they were attempts made on his life.

  222. And in all of his narrow escapes,

  223. he trusted in his father

  224. to help save him through them all.

  225. And his greatest escape,

  226. his most astonishing escape,

  227. was when Jesus escaped the clutches of death,

  228. that first Easter Sunday

  229. in his resurrection victory,

  230. breaking those chains of slavery

  231. to sin and Satan for us

  232. so that we,

  233. through faith in Jesus,

  234. we could be delivered.

  235. This is why in the church,

  236. we always think back

  237. to the gospel events.

  238. That's why we want our worship

  239. to be full of God's word

  240. and full of the gospel.

  241. That's why Jesus gave us

  242. the Lord's Supper and baptism,

  243. so that we can have these physical,

  244. visible reminders

  245. of God's work

  246. to rescue us through Jesus.

  247. And every week as we gather here,

  248. we're being reminded

  249. that God,

  250. through his Son,

  251. the Lord Jesus,

  252. he has rescued,

  253. he has redeemed

  254. by his life,

  255. death,

  256. and resurrection.

  257. We remind ourselves

  258. that he is still working for us now.

  259. He continues to rescue.

  260. He continues to redeem.

  261. He continues to be with us

  262. and for us.

  263. And one day,

  264. he'll come back.

  265. And that rescue

  266. and that redemption

  267. will be complete.

  268. And God's people

  269. will enjoy eternal safety

  270. and security.

  271. And we need these constant reminders

  272. because life is full

  273. of constant challenges.

  274. And that's why

  275. we should think back

  276. to our own narrow escapes.

  277. We should think back

  278. to those times

  279. when we did see God

  280. working for us

  281. so that we can look back

  282. with gratitude,

  283. so that we can remember

  284. personally

  285. that God's covenant love,

  286. it doesn't fail,

  287. that he does care for us.

  288. Sometimes it's through his word.

  289. Sometimes it's the ministry

  290. of his spirit.

  291. Sometimes it's through

  292. the people of God.

  293. Sometimes it's through circumstances.

  294. But this psalm reminds us

  295. that we both praise

  296. and we pray to

  297. God who is on the throne.

  298. God who decides the outcomes.

  299. The God of covenant

  300. who cannot and will not

  301. fail his people.

  302. And he invites each one of us

  303. to know him

  304. and to trust

  305. in his

  306. rescue.

  307. So we have first of all

  308. our great redeemer.

  309. And then right in the middle

  310. of the psalm,

  311. David reminds us

  312. of our

  313. great

  314. dangers.

  315. All the way from verse 3

  316. to verse 7.

  317. But before we get into our text,

  318. let's

  319. step back in time

  320. for a moment.

  321. Edinburgh

  322. 1582.

  323. The date is

  324. September

  325. the 4th.

  326. John

  327. Jury

  328. was a gospel

  329. preacher

  330. who has been

  331. imprisoned

  332. and banished

  333. for faithfully

  334. proclaiming the word

  335. of God.

  336. But now

  337. on September

  338. the 4th,

  339. 1582,

  340. he's back.

  341. And down at

  342. Netherbo,

  343. which is not too far

  344. away from here,

  345. he was met by

  346. 200 friends

  347. and supporters.

  348. And they then

  349. walked up

  350. in procession

  351. on Sunday morning

  352. up the high street

  353. to St. Giles Cathedral.

  354. So we know where we are.

  355. We're at St. Giles Cathedral

  356. on the Royal Mile.

  357. And by that point,

  358. the crowd had swelled

  359. to around about

  360. 2,000 people.

  361. And while

  362. enemy soldiers

  363. watched on,

  364. wondering what

  365. they should do

  366. about John,

  367. Judy,

  368. and a little bit

  369. fearful about

  370. this growing mob

  371. within the city,

  372. you know what

  373. the crowd did?

  374. The crowd sang.

  375. Guess what?

  376. Sam.

  377. They sang

  378. Psalm 124,

  379. four-part harmony,

  380. and the testimony

  381. was that that

  382. was more terrifying

  383. than any mere

  384. mob riot

  385. the soldiers

  386. might have

  387. suspected.

  388. The reality

  389. that we find

  390. in the Bible,

  391. the reality

  392. we meet in life

  393. and in the Christian

  394. life,

  395. is that life

  396. is full of

  397. hazard and

  398. difficulty

  399. and sometimes

  400. menace.

  401. We've been

  402. thinking about

  403. on Sunday evenings

  404. that Jesus

  405. prepared his

  406. disciples for that

  407. as he sent

  408. them for mission.

  409. He'd say,

  410. listen,

  411. they hated me,

  412. they're going

  413. to hate you too.

  414. I'm going to

  415. send you out

  416. like a sheep

  417. among wolves.

  418. So we shouldn't

  419. be surprised.

  420. And Psalm 124

  421. stands as a

  422. reminder in song

  423. that we should

  424. be alert,

  425. that we should

  426. know the situation,

  427. we should know

  428. the times that

  429. we live in,

  430. that spiritually

  431. we're in a war

  432. zone,

  433. but also

  434. that we should

  435. know the solution

  436. and the security

  437. that comes from

  438. our great

  439. God.

  440. So Psalm 124,

  441. as David

  442. composes it,

  443. and then as we

  444. sing it,

  445. it doesn't

  446. hide the

  447. dangers from

  448. us.

  449. It doesn't

  450. suggest that

  451. following God

  452. in the way of

  453. faith,

  454. that following

  455. Jesus is easy

  456. and leads to

  457. peace and

  458. comfort and

  459. everyone welcoming

  460. us and say,

  461. this is wonderful.

  462. Rather,

  463. he gives very

  464. graphic,

  465. mental pictures

  466. to capture our

  467. imagination and

  468. to work on our

  469. hearts to

  470. recognize that,

  471. yes,

  472. these things may

  473. come,

  474. but there is a

  475. God who delivers

  476. and who gives

  477. the final

  478. outcome.

  479. If the Lord

  480. had not been

  481. on our side,

  482. truly the church

  483. would be done

  484. for.

  485. Look at the

  486. four pictures.

  487. Boys and

  488. girls,

  489. look at these

  490. pictures.

  491. You'll recognize

  492. some of these.

  493. The first one

  494. we find in

  495. verse 3.

  496. If the Lord

  497. had not been

  498. on our side

  499. when people

  500. attacked us,

  501. they would

  502. have swallowed

  503. us alive.

  504. Now,

  505. when I read

  506. that,

  507. I was thinking

  508. of some kind

  509. of lurking

  510. predator.

  511. I was imagining

  512. a snake

  513. curled up

  514. in a dark

  515. corner

  516. waiting

  517. for the

  518. unsuspecting

  519. mouse.

  520. And then,

  521. when the

  522. strike comes,

  523. the mouse

  524. is swallowed

  525. whole.

  526. And the

  527. idea of

  528. Psalm 124

  529. is that by

  530. ourselves,

  531. we are

  532. outmatched

  533. by our

  534. spiritual

  535. enemies

  536. if the

  537. Lord had

  538. not been

  539. on our

  540. side.

  541. Picture

  542. two.

  543. If the

  544. Lord had

  545. not been

  546. on our

  547. side,

  548. verse 4,

  549. the flood

  550. would have

  551. engulfed

  552. us,

  553. the torrent

  554. would have

  555. swept over

  556. us,

  557. the raging

  558. waters

  559. would have

  560. swept us

  561. away.

  562. Picture

  563. a raging

  564. flood.

  565. Maybe

  566. some of

  567. us,

  568. we still

  569. remember

  570. those

  571. Christmas

  572. day images

  573. of the

  574. tsunami

  575. that struck

  576. back in

  577. 2004.

  578. Maybe

  579. we've seen

  580. firsthand

  581. the power

  582. of a

  583. river as

  584. it bursts

  585. its banks

  586. and swept

  587. through a

  588. city or

  589. a town.

  590. And again,

  591. the idea

  592. here is

  593. that if

  594. the Lord

  595. had not

  596. been on

  597. the side

  598. of his

  599. people,

  600. they and

  601. we would

  602. be

  603. overwhelmed

  604. and

  605. overcome.

  606. come.

  607. Picture

  608. number

  609. three

  610. is of

  611. a

  612. savage

  613. beast.

  614. Verse

  615. six,

  616. praise

  617. be to

  618. the

  619. Lord

  620. who

  621. has

  622. not

  623. let

  624. us

  625. be

  626. torn

  627. by

  628. their

  629. teeth.

  630. Now,

  631. I'm

  632. going to

  633. confess

  634. the first

  635. time I

  636. read that

  637. my mind

  638. went to

  639. our

  640. little

  641. dog.

  642. Because

  643. you know

  644. with dogs

  645. when they

  646. have dog

  647. toys,

  648. their

  649. instinct

  650. is to

  651. get it

  652. in their

  653. mouth

  654. and shake

  655. it all

  656. about as

  657. if they're

  658. being truly

  659. ferocious.

  660. That's

  661. their instinct.

  662. But that

  663. wouldn't be

  664. particularly

  665. terrifying.

  666. Instead,

  667. perhaps,

  668. we can

  669. think of

  670. an

  671. orca.

  672. Imagine

  673. an

  674. orca.

  675. You know

  676. those horrible

  677. scenes where

  678. you see an

  679. orca playing

  680. with a

  681. seal.

  682. It's

  683. managed to

  684. grab one

  685. and it

  686. flings it

  687. up in the

  688. air and

  689. it's just

  690. playing

  691. with it.

  692. Or maybe

  693. think of

  694. a lion.

  695. And now

  696. that it's

  697. tracked down

  698. a gazelle

  699. and it's

  700. struck.

  701. And it's

  702. ready to

  703. savage.

  704. The idea

  705. again is

  706. that we

  707. would have

  708. been trapped

  709. if the

  710. Lord had

  711. not been

  712. on our

  713. side.

  714. But look

  715. at how

  716. verse 6

  717. begins.

  718. Praise

  719. be to

  720. the Lord

  721. who has

  722. not let

  723. us be

  724. torn by

  725. their

  726. teeth.

  727. And then

  728. the last

  729. picture is

  730. the picture

  731. of the

  732. captured

  733. bird.

  734. We have

  735. escaped like

  736. a bird from

  737. the fowler's

  738. snare.

  739. The snare

  740. has been

  741. broken and

  742. we have

  743. escaped.

  744. So the

  745. unsuspecting

  746. bird walking

  747. through the

  748. woods all

  749. of a sudden

  750. triggers the

  751. trap and

  752. maybe the

  753. net falls or

  754. maybe the

  755. noose tightens

  756. around its

  757. leg.

  758. And the

  759. inevitable

  760. is that the

  761. hunter is

  762. going to

  763. come and

  764. that bird is

  765. heading for

  766. the cooking

  767. pot.

  768. And again

  769. it's the

  770. idea of

  771. being helpless

  772. and hopeless

  773. if the Lord

  774. was not on

  775. the side of

  776. his people.

  777. But what

  778. does it

  779. say?

  780. The snare

  781. has been

  782. broken and

  783. we have

  784. escaped and

  785. that breaking

  786. and that

  787. escaping and

  788. that rescue

  789. doesn't come

  790. from the

  791. birds.

  792. It doesn't

  793. come from

  794. the people

  795. of God.

  796. It comes

  797. from the

  798. rescuer.

  799. It's a

  800. wonderful

  801. reality that

  802. in the

  803. darkest of

  804. dangers

  805. God ensures

  806. that his

  807. church is

  808. protected.

  809. You

  810. might ask

  811. David,

  812. why are you

  813. telling us

  814. this four

  815. times over?

  816. We got it

  817. with the

  818. first image.

  819. Well maybe

  820. it's because

  821. there are so

  822. many dangers

  823. and so many

  824. threats.

  825. And maybe

  826. it's a reminder

  827. that there is a

  828. great need

  829. always for the

  830. people of God

  831. to be alert.

  832. Remember

  833. Peter's

  834. warning.

  835. you have

  836. an enemy,

  837. the devil,

  838. and he

  839. prowls around

  840. like a

  841. roaring lion

  842. seeking

  843. someone to

  844. devour.

  845. So we need

  846. to look

  847. and be

  848. alert.

  849. But it's

  850. also a

  851. reminder that

  852. we need to

  853. live our

  854. days looking

  855. with faith

  856. to God,

  857. his people's

  858. great deliverer

  859. and rescuer.

  860. Martin Luther

  861. was another

  862. reformer.

  863. He was

  864. another who

  865. loved this

  866. psalm.

  867. He often

  868. felt that

  869. the world

  870. was against

  871. him.

  872. He often

  873. felt spiritual

  874. oppression as

  875. he sought

  876. to communicate

  877. the truths

  878. of the

  879. gospel.

  880. And that

  881. led him to

  882. compose a

  883. version of

  884. Psalm 124.

  885. We sometimes

  886. sing it,

  887. a mighty

  888. fortress is

  889. our God.

  890. And just

  891. to say

  892. at a

  893. practical

  894. level,

  895. whether we're

  896. thinking of

  897. Martin Luther

  898. composing a

  899. hymn or

  900. whether we're

  901. thinking about

  902. the people of

  903. God singing

  904. as they

  905. recognize a

  906. great deliverance.

  907. I wonder if

  908. we understand

  909. in our

  910. day to

  911. day the

  912. wisdom and

  913. the goodness

  914. of answering

  915. our fears

  916. with songs

  917. of faith.

  918. It does our

  919. hearts good

  920. to sing,

  921. to remind

  922. ourselves of

  923. what we know

  924. to be true

  925. in God's

  926. word.

  927. This remains

  928. the hope for

  929. the church in

  930. every age,

  931. including

  932. ours.

  933. we have

  934. a Lord

  935. God who

  936. delivers.

  937. Christopher

  938. Ash,

  939. he has a

  940. nice little

  941. sentence,

  942. he says,

  943. the life

  944. of faith

  945. consists of

  946. many narrow

  947. escapes,

  948. all of them

  949. undergirded

  950. by one

  951. very big

  952. escape.

  953. The point

  954. is this,

  955. our faith

  956. is in

  957. the Lord

  958. God,

  959. the one

  960. who sent

  961. his own

  962. son to

  963. be our

  964. true king

  965. and to

  966. be our

  967. savior.

  968. To

  969. acknowledge

  970. that by

  971. nature,

  972. because of

  973. our sin,

  974. because of

  975. our rebellion,

  976. because of

  977. our pride,

  978. we should

  979. be swallowed

  980. up and

  981. we should

  982. be swept

  983. away,

  984. we should

  985. be savaged

  986. because what

  987. we deserve

  988. is God's

  989. judgment.

  990. But by

  991. God's

  992. grace,

  993. he sends

  994. his son

  995. and Jesus

  996. faces down

  997. death in

  998. our place

  999. as our

  1000. representative

  1001. and Jesus

  1002. defeats the

  1003. power of

  1004. death.

  1005. He robs it

  1006. of its power

  1007. and victory.

  1008. He secures

  1009. deliverance for

  1010. all who

  1011. trust in

  1012. him.

  1013. And that

  1014. great event,

  1015. the great

  1016. event of

  1017. the gospel,

  1018. God's

  1019. salvation of

  1020. us through

  1021. Jesus,

  1022. that becomes

  1023. the solid

  1024. rock

  1025. foundation

  1026. that we

  1027. build on.

  1028. That's

  1029. our source

  1030. of safety

  1031. and security

  1032. when the

  1033. storms come.

  1034. And that's

  1035. our security

  1036. when the

  1037. storm of

  1038. God's

  1039. final judgment

  1040. comes.

  1041. We will

  1042. stand when

  1043. we stand

  1044. on the

  1045. truths of

  1046. Jesus and

  1047. his word.

  1048. So that

  1049. trusting in

  1050. the Lord

  1051. Jesus,

  1052. just like the

  1053. singers of

  1054. Psalm 124

  1055. back then,

  1056. we can

  1057. look any

  1058. trouble,

  1059. any danger

  1060. square in

  1061. the eye and

  1062. say, since

  1063. God is

  1064. for us,

  1065. who can be

  1066. against us?

  1067. In all of

  1068. these things,

  1069. we are more

  1070. than conquerors

  1071. through Jesus

  1072. who loved

  1073. us.

  1074. we can

  1075. say with

  1076. faith,

  1077. I am

  1078. convinced

  1079. that

  1080. nothing in

  1081. all creation,

  1082. no opposition,

  1083. no trauma,

  1084. no disappointment,

  1085. no sin,

  1086. nothing will

  1087. be able to

  1088. separate us

  1089. from the

  1090. love of God

  1091. that is in

  1092. Christ Jesus.

  1093. The great

  1094. answer to

  1095. our great

  1096. danger is

  1097. our great

  1098. redeemer.

  1099. And that

  1100. takes us

  1101. finally to

  1102. verse 8

  1103. and our

  1104. great

  1105. confidence.

  1106. It closes

  1107. with this

  1108. wonderful

  1109. statement of

  1110. faith.

  1111. Our

  1112. help

  1113. collectively

  1114. as the

  1115. church,

  1116. our

  1117. help

  1118. is in

  1119. the name

  1120. of the

  1121. Lord,

  1122. the maker

  1123. of heaven

  1124. and earth.

  1125. Now,

  1126. we've

  1127. already

  1128. met

  1129. this

  1130. statement

  1131. of

  1132. faith

  1133. on the

  1134. pilgrim

  1135. journey.

  1136. Psalm

    Psalms 121:2

  1137. 121

  1138. verse 2,

  1139. my help

  1140. comes from

  1141. the Lord,

  1142. the maker

  1143. of heaven

  1144. and earth.

  1145. And here

  1146. again,

  1147. David invites

  1148. us to

  1149. look back

  1150. after a

  1151. danger

  1152. has

  1153. passed

  1154. with a

  1155. real sense

  1156. of gratitude.

  1157. He leads

  1158. the people

  1159. of God

  1160. into

  1161. confident

  1162. trust

  1163. as they

  1164. sing.

  1165. After all,

  1166. the one

  1167. who is

  1168. on the

  1169. side

  1170. of his

  1171. church

  1172. and his

  1173. people,

  1174. the one

  1175. who provides

  1176. help,

  1177. is none

  1178. other than

  1179. our almighty

  1180. maker,

  1181. the creator

  1182. of heaven

  1183. and earth.

  1184. He made

  1185. all things

  1186. and right

  1187. now he

  1188. sustains

  1189. all things

  1190. and even

  1191. now he

  1192. is directing

  1193. all things

  1194. to his

  1195. intended

  1196. purpose

  1197. and outcome

  1198. and we

  1199. can

  1200. trust

  1201. him.

  1202. Notice

  1203. our help

  1204. is in

  1205. the name

  1206. of the

  1207. Lord,

  1208. all

  1209. block

  1210. capitals.

  1211. We'll keep

  1212. saying this,

  1213. that is

  1214. the personal

  1215. covenant

  1216. name of

  1217. God.

  1218. And just

  1219. as in

  1220. the ancient

  1221. Near East

  1222. when a

  1223. great king

  1224. entered into

  1225. a covenant

  1226. treaty with

  1227. a lesser

  1228. nation,

  1229. there was

  1230. an agreement

  1231. on both

  1232. sides.

  1233. So the

  1234. great king

  1235. would say

  1236. to the

  1237. lesser

  1238. king,

  1239. you are

  1240. to show

  1241. me

  1242. loyalty

  1243. and

  1244. honour

  1245. and

  1246. if

  1247. you

  1248. do,

  1249. I

  1250. will

  1251. offer

  1252. you

  1253. protection

  1254. and

  1255. security.

  1256. Maybe we

  1257. think of

  1258. it a little

  1259. bit like

  1260. the allies

  1261. in World

  1262. War I.

  1263. You know

  1264. when Austria

  1265. decided they

  1266. were going

  1267. to wage

  1268. war on

  1269. Serbia,

  1270. the allies

  1271. stood with

  1272. Serbia.

  1273. The great

  1274. king will

  1275. stand for

  1276. the lesser

  1277. in time

  1278. of war.

  1279. God

  1280. says I

  1281. will stand

  1282. for my

  1283. people in

  1284. all dangers.

  1285. And so

  1286. confident faith

  1287. begins here.

  1288. As we

  1289. understand our

  1290. maker is our

  1291. father in

  1292. heaven, is the

  1293. one who has

  1294. entered into

  1295. covenant with

  1296. us, he will

  1297. defend us, he

  1298. cannot break

  1299. his promises.

  1300. Our

  1301. confidence is

  1302. in Jesus who

  1303. said I will

  1304. build my

  1305. church and

  1306. the gates of

  1307. hell will not

  1308. prevail against

  1309. it.

  1310. God's people

  1311. in all

  1312. times, including

  1313. our time, can

  1314. confidently say

  1315. our help is

  1316. in the name

  1317. of the Lord,

  1318. the maker of

  1319. heaven and

  1320. earth.

  1321. The psalm says

  1322. to us, yes,

  1323. there will be

  1324. suffering.

  1325. And yes, there

  1326. will even be

  1327. martyrs.

  1328. Think Nigeria,

  1329. think Yemen,

  1330. think North

  1331. Korea.

  1332. God's people

  1333. but for the

  1334. church, for the

  1335. church as a

  1336. whole, for the

  1337. church for

  1338. eternity, it

  1339. will survive, it

  1340. will grow and

  1341. in the end we

  1342. will be delivered

  1343. and glorified.

  1344. And so David

  1345. presents for us

  1346. the wisdom and

  1347. humility of faith

  1348. as he gratefully

  1349. looks away from

  1350. himself to look

  1351. to his great

  1352. God in utter

  1353. dependence, to

  1354. rejoice totally

  1355. in his

  1356. redemption,

  1357. inviting us to

  1358. be honest enough

  1359. to say, if

  1360. Jesus was not my

  1361. Lord and my

  1362. Savior, there is

  1363. no way I could

  1364. follow God, there

1365. is no way I could

  1366. be good enough for

  1367. God, there is no

1368. way I could hope to

  1369. stand before his

  1370. judgment seat and

  1371. be welcomed into

  1372. his kingdom.

  1373. freedom.

  1374. So as we close,

1375. can you and I, can

  1376. we sing this song?

  1377. Can we sing it

  1378. personally?

  1379. Can we look back

  1380. and say, God has

  1381. worked for me.

  1382. God has delivered

  1383. me when I was

  1384. helpless and

  1385. hopeless.

  1386. He delivered me

  1387. there at the cross

  1388. and he continues to

  1389. be for me today.

  1390. If so, then be

  1391. glad.

  1392. Sing for joy and

  1393. give him glory and

  1394. share those stories

  1395. to encourage one

  1396. another to keep

  1397. walking with Jesus.

  1398. But if this isn't

  1399. your personal

  1400. experience, then the

  1401. word of God would

  1402. say, this then is

  1403. your greatest need.

  1404. that you would

  1405. ask Jesus to

  1406. deliver you from

  1407. your sin, to be

  1408. your savior.

  1409. And there is the

  1410. promise in the

  1411. Bible that if we

  1412. ask him with faith,

  1413. if we turn from

  1414. sin to trust in

  1415. him, then he

  1416. will do it.

  1417. Well, may Psalm

  1418. 124 be precious

1419. to us as we think

  1420. about this rhythm

  1421. that every week we

  1422. would be learning to

  1423. look back with

  1424. thankfulness and

  1425. joy.

  1426. God sent Jesus

  1427. for me to

  1428. face the attacks

  1429. of the evil one

  1430. for me, to be

  1431. overwhelmed under

  1432. the flood of God's

  1433. judgment in my

  1434. place, to be in

  1435. the teeth of lions

  1436. on the cross for

  1437. me, to enter into

  1438. death, to secure my

  1439. salvation.

  1440. may we find

  1441. ourselves looking

  1442. back to that great

  1443. rescue as we

  1444. also look forward to

  1445. final rescue, to

  1446. Jesus returning to

  1447. make everything new,

  1448. to bring perfect

  1449. justice and security

  1450. and joy so we

  1451. might live today with

  1452. confident trust, not

  1453. in ourselves, not in

  1454. our strategies, not in

  1455. our successes, but

  1456. looking to Jesus

  1457. saying our help

1458. is in the name of

  1459. the Lord, the

  1460. maker of heaven

  1461. and earth.

  1462. Let's pray together

  1463. briefly.

  1464. Lord, we thank you

1465. that the Bible is so

  1466. full of rescue and

  1467. redemption stories.

  1468. it's so full of

  1469. encouragements as we

  1470. see your people in

  1471. need, crying out to

  1472. you and you being

  1473. patient and kind and

  1474. faithful and answering

  1475. and delivering in

  1476. power so that your

  1477. people might live with

  1478. security and in praise

  1479. of your name.

1480. And Lord, we thank you

1481. that all of those small

  1482. acts of deliverance

  1483. point us to the

  1484. ultimate salvation, the

  1485. ultimate rescue of

  1486. the Lord Jesus through

  1487. his death and

  1488. resurrection.

  1489. May we find

  1490. ourselves often

  1491. returning back to

  1492. the truths of the

  1493. gospel, to give us

  1494. hope in your covenant

  1495. love and to

  1496. recognize our help

  1497. that comes from the

  1498. Lord, the maker of

  1499. heaven and earth.

1500. May you help us to

  1501. live today with

  1502. confident trust as we

  1503. look forward to that

  1504. coming deliverance when

  1505. Jesus returns.

  1506. help us, give us

  1507. confidence and hope,

  1508. not in ourselves, but

  1509. in Jesus.

1510. We pray in his name.

  1511. Amen.
