  1. Now, perhaps we can turn together in our Bibles to Matthew chapter 11. That's on page 977.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  2. ! We are going to read from chapter 11, verse 25 to chapter 12, verse 14.

  3. And maybe just to say at this point as well, that shortly after the end of the service, we'll take a few minutes to pray together sometime around 6.

  4. 6.40. So if you want to stick around, we'll pray here. That'd be much appreciated, especially as we think about inviting other people to church,

  5. as we think about, as Roddy was praying, the mission of God's people in our city and society.

  6. But here we are in Matthew chapter 11 from verse 25. Let's again hear the Word of God.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  7. At that time, Jesus said,

  8. At that time, Jesus went through the cornfields. On the Sabbath, his disciples were hungry and began to pick some ears of corn and eat them.

  9. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, Look, your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.

  10. He answered, Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

  11. He entered the house of God and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.

  12. Or haven't you read in the Sabbath duty in the Sabbath, the Sabbath, and yet are innocent.

  13. I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

  14. If you had known what these words mean, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent.

  15. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

  16. Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue and a man with a shriveled hand was there.

  17. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?

  18. He said to them, If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?

  19. How much more valuable is a person than a sheep?

  20. Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

  21. Then he said to the man, Stretch out your hand.

  22. So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other.

  23. But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

  24. Amen.

  25. So we're thinking this evening as we get back into Matthew's Gospel about the Christ-centered life.

  26. But just as we get to our text, and as we place it in the context of where we are as a church,

  27. Imagine a conversation with a friend or a family member this week,

  28. and the conversation turns in such a way that it leads to an invitation.

  29. Hey, would you like to try church with us this week or next?

  30. If there was a follow-up question, why?

  31. How would we answer?

  32. I want to suggest there's three excellent answers to that question here in chapters 11 and 12 of Matthew's Gospel.

  33. We might invite someone to come and try church because it's in church and in God's Word and in worship,

  34. where we can discover how to have relationship with God.

  35. And that's hugely important.

  36. We also discover, as we gather around God's Word to hear His voice,

  37. here's how to find true rest and true peace in our lives.

  38. And we know so many people who are looking for that.

  39. That's a great answer.

  40. Or we might be led to say, well, you come to church so that you can discover Jesus

  41. and you can find about His mercy and the compassion of God.

  42. There's wonderful answers in here.

  43. And notice that all of them involve knowing Jesus and a life that makes Him central.

  44. Every one of us, we have a control center.

  45. There will always be someone or something that is providing our sense of drive in our life,

  46. that gives us our sense of purpose.

  47. It's where we look to to find our security, our hope, and our joy.

  48. And what we discover with Jesus as He comes on the mission of God into this world

  49. is He makes the unique and the bold claim that what each of us need to do is to make Him central

  50. if we are to experience the life with God that we were made for.

  51. So this chapter reminds us that Jesus is calling us, God is calling us to the Christ-centered life.

  52. But as we look at this text, we also see that running in the background, there's another way of life.

  53. There's the way of life of the Pharisees.

  54. And what becomes clear by the end of our reading, we heard it, they are getting together to want to kill Jesus.

  55. The Pharisees are rejecting Jesus in favor of their own way to live, strict law-keeping to find salvation.

  56. And in this passage and in many others in Matthew's gospel,

  57. Jesus will lovingly confront those false alternatives that would make something else central.

  58. And so one thing that Jesus would want to do for us this evening is to expose where perhaps we come to rely on other things than Jesus.

  59. Perhaps it's a job or a family.

  60. Perhaps it's even our religious performance.

  61. And He wants to strip those away so that He might have in our lives the central place.

  62. And so this evening we're going to hear Jesus calling us to the Christ-centered life.

  63. And we'll also be at the same time comparing and contrasting with another way of life.

  64. To see which is better and why.

  65. And to recognize as we think about the Christ-centered life,

  66. this is what Jesus invites His people, His church, to experience and to enjoy day after day.

  67. And this is what He sends us out to invite others into.

  68. Not into religion as such, but into a wonderful life where we know Jesus as our Savior and our friend and our Lord.

  69. We invite people so that they too might discover relationship with God and rest from God

  70. and the mercy of God that we find in Jesus.

  71. So let's have a look at each of these things in turn.

  72. First of all, recognize what Jesus says.

  73. That He gives us relationship with God.

  74. If you look at chapter 11 verses 25 to 27,

  75. we hear Jesus say remarkable things about Himself.

  76. And I suppose the foundation of a Christ-centered life begins here.

  77. It begins with believing what Jesus says about Himself.

  78. So as Jesus announces,

  79. I am the center of God's revelation.

  80. That I alone can introduce you to God the Father.

  81. We need to take Him on trust.

  82. To understand this is no small claim.

  83. When we hear Jesus write, we hear Him saying,

  84. if you and I, if we want to connect with God,

  85. we need to go through Jesus.

  86. If we are to discover who God truly is,

  87. then we need to look no further than Jesus.

  88. If we want to hear God speak and reveal Himself,

  89. then we need to listen to Jesus.

  90. So He's making huge claims about Himself in these words.

  91. So look with me at Jesus' logic

  92. as we consider His words and His claim.

  93. So look at verse 25 and 26,

  94. where God the Father,

  95. Jesus is saying,

  96. God the Father conceals and reveals according to His will.

  97. Listen to Jesus.

  98. I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  99. because You've hidden these things from the wise and learned

  100. and revealed them to little children.

  101. Yes, Father, for this is what You were pleased to do.

  102. God's pleasure to conceal and to reveal.

  103. Now the context for this section

  104. is that we've just been told earlier in Matthew's gospel,

  105. Jesus was active in a number of towns and cities.

  106. They saw miracles, but they have not repented.

  107. And we're meeting Pharisees,

  108. and they've listened to Jesus,

  109. and they've seen His miracles,

  110. but they have not responded in faith.

  111. But we also know Jesus has disciples,

  112. He has followers,

  113. so others have turned in faith.

  114. And the point of that is this,

  115. that we cannot understand God

  116. or enter into true relationship with God

  117. by our own efforts.

  118. It's not our church attending,

  119. or our Bible reading,

  120. or our study of good theology

  121. that is the basis of knowing God.

  122. What Jesus says,

  123. and what we need,

  124. is for God to reveal Himself to us.

  125. And He invites us to have a childlike trust

  126. that's willing to be taught by Jesus

  127. so that we might know by God's grace,

  128. God the Father.

  129. He continues, beginning of verse 27,

  130. by making the recognition that Jesus comes

  131. with the Father's full authority.

  132. Look again at Jesus' words.

  133. All things have been committed to me

  134. by my Father.

  135. He is the Father's representative on the earth.

  136. He is the Father's approved agent.

  137. Whenever we see Jesus act,

  138. He is acting with the Father's power and authority.

  139. When we see Jesus' love,

  140. we understand this reveals to us

  141. the Father's loving heart.

  142. He perfectly represents God

  143. to us in the world.

  144. And that includes

  145. the right that Jesus has

  146. to our worship,

  147. to our trust,

  148. to our obedience.

  149. The logic continues.

  150. Look with me at verse 27.

  151. No one knows the Son

  152. except the Father.

  153. To put it another way,

  154. only God the Father

  155. truly understands Jesus.

  156. It takes God

  157. to know God.

  158. There is a level of mystery

  159. that only God can fully comprehend.

  160. How is it that Jesus

  161. can be one and the same time

  162. fully human and fully divine?

  163. How is it that the immortal God

  164. can take on mortal flesh?

  165. How can the eternal enter history?

  166. How is it that Jesus,

  167. the Word of God,

  168. becomes flesh

  169. and made His dwelling among us

  170. so that we see

  171. the glory of God

  172. in this man

  173. who was born of the Virgin?

  174. Only God fully knows God.

  175. So there are more books

  176. and more films

  177. and more podcasts

  178. and more videos about Jesus

  179. than any other figure

  180. in human history.

  181. But the best of minds

  182. will only ever

  183. scratch the surface.

  184. And so when Jesus

  185. says no one knows the Son

  186. except the Father,

  187. this calls for our humility.

  188. But doesn't it also call us

  189. to hunger

  190. that as God's people

  191. we would want to know God better.

  192. We will never know Him fully

  193. but we can know Him more.

  194. Jesus continues,

  195. continuing in verse 27,

  196. no one knows the Father

  197. except the Son.

  198. So this is the flip side

  199. of what He's just said,

  200. only Jesus fully understands

  201. God the Father.

  202. Now do we sense how bold

  203. Jesus' claim is here?

  204. Here is Jesus walking on this earth

  205. and saying,

  206. I alone can reveal the truth about God.

  207. I know God completely.

  208. No other human teacher

  209. would dare to make this kind of claim.

  210. while the best of human minds

  211. have often grappled with

  212. the great things of God

  213. and we have wonderful theology

  214. that's come from great minds,

  215. only Jesus knows the Father

  216. completely and intimately.

  217. Jesus uniquely calls God

  218. His Abba Father

  219. and wonderfully as adopted children

  220. we get to call God Father

  221. but Jesus has a special relationship.

  222. He is the eternal Son of the Father.

  223. So again,

  224. Jesus is helping us to see

  225. that in a world full of opinions about God,

  226. Jesus cuts through them all

  227. as He says,

  228. I alone know God fully

  229. and absolutely come to me

  230. to know God.

  231. And that's where He goes next.

  232. No one knows the Father

  233. except the Son

  234. and those

  235. to whom the Son

  236. chooses to reveal Him.

  237. Jesus alone

  238. can fully reveal the Father to us

  239. and recognize that Jesus came

  240. to reveal the Father to us.

  241. The one who enjoys

  242. perfect relationship with His Father,

  243. the one who has enjoyed

  244. eternal fellowship with the Father,

  245. He has come to introduce us

  246. to His Father.

  247. That when we have faith in Jesus,

  248. we now have direct access

  249. to God's throne room

  250. to know the King of the universe

  251. as our loving Father in heaven.

  252. So Jesus in these few short words

  253. is making remarkable claims of Himself.

  254. He is unique.

  255. He has direct, perfect, personal

  256. knowledge of God

  257. and He is the perfect,

  258. personal revelation of God

  259. to the world.

  260. He is the end of human speculation

  261. and the climax of God's revelation.

  262. But the point of all that He says,

  263. why it matters,

  264. is that it means we can know God.

  265. We can know God as our Father.

  266. That we can enjoy life

  267. in right relationship with God.

  268. That all the disharmony,

  269. all the disintegration

  270. that we're so aware of,

  271. caused so often by

  272. our own human pride,

  273. our own rebellion,

  274. that that can be fixed.

  275. That by God's grace,

  276. we can share life

  277. with the eternal God.

  278. That by God's grace,

  279. we get to pray

  280. and know God as our Father.

  281. And that's a wonderful privilege

  282. for God's people

  283. and it's the start of our mission

  284. as a church.

  285. That our mission is to announce

  286. that in Jesus,

  287. God is calling people back to Himself,

  288. to the end of wandering,

  289. back into covenant relationship,

  290. so that by faith,

  291. we and others

  292. can enjoy relationship with God.

  293. And we,

  294. as the people of God,

  295. can invite others,

  296. join us

  297. to know this relationship

  298. that means so much to us.

  299. You can know God as Father too.

  300. So Jesus comes

  301. to give us relationship

  302. with God,

  303. His Father.

  304. Father.

  305. Secondly,

  306. what we learn

  307. about the Christ-centered life,

  308. why our life needs

  309. to be centered on Christ.

  310. Here's the second reason.

  311. It's because Jesus

  312. gives us rest.

  313. Look at the beginning

  314. of verse 28.

  315. Come to me,

  316. all you who are weary

  317. and burdened,

  318. and I will give you rest.

  319. A recent book

  320. written by a Korean philosopher

  321. based in Germany

  322. called the Burnout Society.

  323. It really drills down

  324. on the reality

  325. that the modern mantras

  326. that we hear so often

  327. of define yourself,

  328. of be whatever you want to be,

  329. of manifest

  330. and make it happen,

  331. while for a tiny fraction

  332. of the population

  333. that may get them somewhere,

  334. for the vast majority

  335. it is proving exhausting

  336. and it's led directly

  337. to greater amounts

  338. of anxiety

  339. and depression

  340. and feelings

  341. of hopelessness.

  342. People are being told,

  343. you can do

  344. whatever you set

  345. your mind to

  346. and then,

  347. so often,

  348. we discover,

  349. well, we just can't.

  350. And rather,

  351. we're pushing and pushing

  352. and it feels like

  353. we're pushing against

  354. a brick wall

  355. and we do that

  356. for long enough

  357. and it leads

  358. to a whole generation

  359. feeling hopeless

  360. and worthless.

  361. And importantly,

  362. as we still hear

  363. that voice,

  364. so many people

  365. never able to rest,

  366. never able to feel content.

  367. Things were different

  368. in Jesus' day

  369. but at the same time

  370. not so different.

  371. If you are part

  372. of Jewish society

  373. as Jesus was,

  374. that society was led

  375. by the Pharisees.

  376. So much of religious life

  377. and political life

  378. and moral,

  379. ethical life

  380. was governed

  381. by these Pharisees.

  382. And these Pharisees

  383. were pushing people

  384. towards salvation

  385. by their own religion

  386. and by their self-effort

  387. which is always

  388. a recipe

  389. for exhaustion

  390. and insecurity.

  391. That to try

  392. and safeguard

  393. God's laws,

  394. they added lots

  395. and lots

  396. and lots

  397. of additional

  398. human rules.

  399. pushing people

  400. onto this

  401. exhausting

  402. rollercoaster ride

  403. of a sense

  404. of momentary pride

  405. if they are having

  406. a good day

  407. and they manage

  408. to keep the laws

  409. but so often despair

  410. when they couldn't

  411. reach the standards

  412. the Pharisees

  413. were setting

  414. for other people.

  415. I wonder

  416. when we come

  417. to Jesus' words

  418. do we identify

  419. with some

  420. of his sense

  421. of life

  422. simply being exhausting

  423. of self-effort

  424. being exhausting

  425. perhaps we realize

  426. for ourselves

  427. for people

  428. in our circles

  429. what's needed

  430. almost more than anything

  431. is that sense

  432. of peace

  433. and the capacity

  434. to rest.

  435. Let's listen in

  436. to what Jesus

  437. says next

  438. and listen

  439. in verse 28

  440. to how he begins

  441. and again

  442. this is radical

  443. come to me

  444. Jesus says.

  445. He doesn't say

  446. go to God

  447. this is

  448. a direct

  449. invitation

  450. and a remarkable

  451. claim

  452. I can offer

  453. you rest

  454. and it's remarkable

  455. because the Jewish

  456. people know

  457. and Jesus knows

  458. that in the Bible

  459. rest is a gift

  460. from God.

  461. We could go back

  462. to creation

  463. God created

  464. in six days

  465. day seven

  466. was a day of rest

  467. God rested

  468. to enjoy

  469. his creation

  470. he invited

  471. Adam and Eve

  472. to rest

  473. to enjoy

  474. their creation

  475. and to worship

  476. their God

  477. or we can think

  478. about what God

  479. did for the people

  480. in the story

  481. of the Exodus

  482. from being slaves

  483. where they could

  484. never rest

  485. to enjoying

  486. life with God

  487. where they had

  488. weekly rest

  489. where they would

  490. eventually go

  491. to the promised land

  492. which was the place

  493. of rest.

  494. Another significant

  495. theme in the Old Testament

  496. the theme of exile

  497. and then the return

  498. home.

  499. Having been judged

  500. because they turned

  501. away from God

  502. turned towards

  503. false gods

  504. there was this promise

  505. that God would

  506. restore people

  507. back to their land

  508. and to the rest

  509. of God

  510. and you turn

  511. to the end

  512. of the Bible

  513. and still

  514. rest is there

  515. there remains

  516. a Sabbath rest

  517. for the people

  518. of God.

  519. The imagery

  520. of new creation

  521. involves resting

  522. and feasting

  523. in God's presence

  524. in God's perfect world

  525. so rest is a precious

  526. gift from God

  527. and here is Jesus

  528. on his kingdom mission

  529. and by God's grace

  530. he is inviting us

  531. to know rest

  532. and a particular

  533. kind of rest

  534. to rest

  535. from trying

  536. to be self

  537. righteous

  538. and instead

  539. to rest

  540. in his

  541. perfect

  542. righteousness

  543. because who

  544. is Jesus

  545. speaking to?

  546. Look with me

  547. again at verse 28

  548. he is speaking

  549. to those

  550. who are weary

  551. and burdened

  552. and in Jesus'

  553. day

  554. those who are weary

  555. and burdened

  556. were those

  557. who are under

  558. the laws

  559. of the Pharisees.

  560. Listen to Jesus

  561. in Matthew 23

    Matthew 23:4

  562. verse 4

  563. this is what he says

  564. about the Pharisees

  565. he says

  566. they tie up

  567. heavy

  568. cumbersome

  569. loads

  570. and put them

  571. on other people's

  572. shoulders

  573. but they themselves

  574. are not willing

  575. to lift a finger

  576. to move them.

  577. So the system

  578. of the Pharisees

  579. well it was an

  580. absolute lie

  581. and it was so

  582. destructive

  583. but the path

  584. to God

  585. they were saying

  586. it comes through

  587. ritual

  588. and religion

  589. and rule keeping

  590. and so people

  591. were weary

  592. and burdened

  593. and then Jesus

  594. comes and there's

  595. this wonderful

  596. contrast

  597. and wonderful promise

  598. come to me

  599. I'll give you rest.

  600. Jesus

  601. our saviour

  602. he promises

  603. to carry us

  604. he promises

  605. to lift

  606. the crushing

  607. burdens

  608. off people's

  609. backs

  610. he promises

  611. to give freedom

  612. and rest

  613. as we experience

  614. and rest

  615. in the grace

  616. of God

  617. he offers us

  618. deep

  619. and lasting

  620. rest

  621. peace

  622. with God

  623. peace

  624. in our hearts

  625. because Jesus

  626. has come

  627. ultimately

  628. to remove

  629. the heavy

  630. burden of sin

  631. off our backs

  632. to end

  633. our slavery

  634. to sin

  635. and to show us

  636. that we don't need

  637. to try and keep

  638. the law

  639. to deal with

  640. that sin

  641. because that was

  642. never the law's

  643. purpose

  644. so he's inviting

  645. us into rest

  646. but maybe you then

  647. wonder why in

  648. verse 29

  649. he moves to

  650. an image of

  651. working

  652. verse 29

  653. take my yoke

  654. upon you

  655. and learn

  656. from me

  657. for I am

  658. gentle and

  659. humble in heart

  660. and you'll find

  661. rest for your

  662. souls

  663. for my yoke

  664. is easy

  665. and my burden

  666. is light

  667. how can we rest

  668. if we take a yoke

  669. what's Jesus

  670. talking about there

  671. well to think

  672. about the literal

  673. yoke

  674. Jesus lived

  675. in a farming

  676. society

  677. so he'd be

  678. used to seeing

  679. a couple of

  680. oxen

  681. yoked together

  682. with a harness

  683. over the pair

  684. of shoulders

  685. so that they

  686. could work

  687. together

  688. to plow

  689. a field

  690. but Jesus

  691. was also

  692. familiar

  693. with a

  694. bar mitzvah

  695. when a Jewish

  696. young person

  697. became a man

  698. came of age

  699. there would be

  700. a promise

  701. given

  702. along these

  703. lines

  704. where the

  705. young man

  706. says

  707. I promise

  708. to yoke

  709. myself

  710. to the law

  711. of God

  712. and do we

  713. hear what

  714. Jesus is doing

  715. here

  716. when Jesus

  717. is saying

  718. take my yoke

  719. and learn

  720. from me

  721. he is inviting

  722. us to

  723. partner

  724. in life

  725. with Jesus

  726. to a life

  727. of discipleship

  728. not trying to

  729. figure out

  730. our own

  731. way to

  732. please God

  733. not trying to

  734. figure out

  735. our own

  736. way to do

  737. life

  738. but to

  739. partner

  740. in life

  741. with Jesus

  742. and that's

  743. rest

  744. because there's

  745. freedom

  746. because now

  747. we're living

  748. the way

  749. God made

  750. us to live

  751. but he's

  752. also inviting

  753. us

  754. to show

  755. loyalty

  756. and commitment

  757. to him

  758. to find

  759. rest

  760. in enjoying

  761. life

  762. with God

  763. because we

  764. have submitted

  765. to Jesus

  766. the son

  767. and there

  768. is a freedom

  769. in this

  770. because Jesus

  771. shows us

  772. his heart

  773. he's not a

  774. harsh taskmaster

  775. like the Pharisees

  776. rather

  777. and this is the

  778. only time Jesus

  779. describes his

  780. own heart

  781. he says

  782. I am gentle

  783. and humble

  784. in heart

  785. and he gives

  786. us the deepest

  787. rest

  788. rest

  789. for our

  790. souls

  791. Jesus

  792. has come

  793. on a

  794. mission

  795. to give

  796. us rest

  797. by giving

  798. us God's

  799. salvation

  800. and Jesus

  801. will do

  802. that by

  803. himself

  804. going under

  805. the weight

  806. of the law

  807. and all

  808. of its

  809. demands

  810. and he

  811. will be

  812. truly

  813. and perfectly

  814. obedient

  815. at every

  816. point of

  817. his life

  818. in our

  819. place

  820. as our

  821. representative

  822. and he

  823. will also

  824. willingly

  825. take the

  826. punishment

  827. for our

  828. law

  829. breaking

  830. as our

  831. substitute

  832. he will

  833. satisfy the

  834. demands

  835. of God's

  836. law

  837. giving up

  838. his life

  839. as a

  840. sacrifice

  841. to death

  842. so that

  843. we might

  844. be forgiven

  845. and have

  846. freedom

  847. and have

  848. life

  849. and rest

  850. knowing

  851. we live

  852. enjoying

  853. relationship

  854. and love

  855. from God

  856. because as

  857. we are

  858. trusting

  859. in Jesus

  860. alone

  861. for

  862. salvation

  863. it

  864. allows

  865. us

  866. to

  867. rest

  868. deeply

  869. so

  870. when

  871. we

  872. sin

  873. as

  874. Christians

  875. and we

  876. do

  877. sin

  878. we know

  879. that

  880. we don't

  881. need to

  882. anxiously

  883. doubt

  884. does

  885. God

  886. love

  887. me

  888. am I

  889. really

  890. saved

  891. no

  892. we're

  893. trusting

  894. in

  895. Jesus

  896. and we

  897. know

  898. that

  899. his

  900. work

  901. is

  902. finished

  903. and so

  904. again

  905. we

  906. confess

  907. our

  908. sin

  909. but

  910. we

  911. rest

  912. as

  913. we

  914. trust

  915. there

  916. is

  917. rest

  918. as

  919. we

  920. build

  921. our

  922. life

  923. around

  924. Jesus

  925. because

  926. we

  927. don't

  928. need

  929. to

  930. be

  931. comparing

  932. ourselves

  933. with

  934. others

  935. all

  936. the

  937. time

  938. so

  939. much

  940. of

  941. modern

  942. life

  943. is

  944. comparison

  945. and

  946. competition

  947. and

  948. Jesus

  949. gives

  950. us

  951. the

  952. security

  953. to

  954. rest

  955. It's

  956. wonderful

  957. we

  958. are

  959. free

  960. to be

  961. unimportant

  962. and

  963. unnoticed

  964. by the

  965. world

  966. because

  967. we

  968. know

  969. we

  970. are

  971. loved

  972. by

  973. God

  974. and

  975. we

  976. are

  977. seen

  978. by

  979. Jesus

  980. so

  981. as

  982. we

  983. learn

  984. to

  985. look

  986. away

  987. from

  988. ourselves

  989. and

  990. to

  991. look

  992. to

  993. Jesus

  994. and

  995. center

  996. our

  997. life

  998. on

  999. him

  1000. he

  1001. gives

  1002. us

  1003. relationship

  1004. where

  1005. we

  1006. know

  1007. God

  1008. as

  1009. father

  1010. and

  1011. he

  1012. gives

  1013. us

  1014. the

  1015. deep

  1016. rest

  1017. that

  1018. our

  1019. hearts

  1020. and

  1021. lives

  1022. and

  1023. souls

  1024. really

  1025. need

  1026. one

  1027. last

  1028. thing

  1029. about

  1030. the

  1031. Christ

  1032. centered

  1033. life

  1034. we

  1035. have

  1036. here

  1037. and

  1038. it's

  1039. this

  1040. that

  1041. Jesus

  1042. shows

  1043. us

  1044. mercy

  1045. that's

  1046. the

  1047. message

  1048. of

  1049. those

  1050. first

  1051. 14

  1052. verses

  1053. of

  1054. chapter

  1055. 12

  1056. but

  1057. just

  1058. to

  1059. step

  1060. away

  1061. from

  1062. the

  1063. text

  1064. for a

  1065. moment

  1066. in

  1067. 18th

  1068. century

  1069. England

  1070. we've

  1071. been

  1072. in

  1073. 18th

  1074. century

  1075. England

  1076. a lot

  1077. today

  1078. I know

  1079. but

  1080. there

  1081. was

  1082. a

  1083. revival

  1084. of

  1085. Christianity

  1086. and

  1087. one

  1088. of

  1089. the

  1090. striking

  1091. things

  1092. that

  1093. social

  1094. historians

  1095. and

  1096. church

  1097. historians

  1098. noticed

  1099. was that

  1100. over

  1101. the

  1102. time

  1103. this

  1104. revival

  1105. that

  1106. happened

  1107. so

  1108. more and

  1109. more

  1110. people

  1111. being

  1112. active

  1113. in

  1114. social

  1115. change

  1116. so

  1117. it's

  1118. at

  1119. this

  1120. period

  1121. that

  1122. William

  1123. Wilberforce

  1124. was

  1125. working

  1126. in

  1127. parliament

  1128. for the

  1129. abolition

  1130. of

  1131. slavery

  1132. it

  1133. was

  1134. at

  1135. the

  1136. same

  1137. time

  1138. that

  1139. Lord

  1140. Shaftesbury

  1141. was

  1142. working

  1143. for

  1144. better

  1145. working

  1146. conditions

  1147. it

  1148. was

  1149. the

  1150. same

  1151. time

  1152. that

  1153. Christians

  1154. like

  1155. Elizabeth

  1156. Fry

  1157. and

  1158. John

  1159. Howard

  1160. were

  1161. working

  1162. for

  1163. prison

  1164. reform

  1165. down

  1166. in

  1167. England

  1168. and

  1169. it

  1170. reveals

  1171. a

  1172. principle

  1173. that

  1174. as

  1175. Christians

  1176. receive

  1177. and are

  1178. transformed

  1179. by the

  1180. mercy

  1181. of

  1182. God

  1183. we

  1184. are

  1185. then

  1186. moved

  1187. to

  1188. show

  1189. mercy

  1190. to

  1191. others

  1192. that

  1193. as

  1194. God's

  1195. grace

  1196. comes

  1197. to

  1198. us

  1199. and

  1200. changes

  1201. us

  1202. that

  1203. it

  1204. creates

  1205. a

  1206. channel

  1207. where

  1208. that

  1209. mercy

  1210. flows

  1211. from

  1212. us

  1213. and

  1214. we

  1215. put

  1216. the

  1217. mercy

  1218. of

  1219. God

  1220. on

  1221. display

  1222. in

  1223. the

  1224. world

  1225. the

  1226. Christian

  1227. church

  1228. has

  1229. always

  1230. been

  1231. designed

  1232. by

  1233. God

  1234. to

  1235. be

  1236. a

  1237. contrast

  1238. community

  1239. Israel

  1240. was to

  1241. stand

  1242. out

  1243. from

  1244. the

  1245. nations

  1246. the

  1247. church

  1248. is

  1249. to

  1250. stand

  1251. out

  1252. from

  1253. the

  1254. society

  1255. it

  1256. finds

  1257. itself

  1258. in

  1259. and

  1260. here

  1261. we

  1262. see

  1263. from

  1264. Jesus

  1265. we

  1266. can

  1267. stand

  1268. out

  1269. and be

  1270. a

  1271. light

  1272. to

  1273. the

  1274. nations

  1275. in

  1276. part

  1277. by

  1278. the

  1279. mercy

  1280. we

  1281. show

  1282. the

  1283. compassion

  1284. we

  1285. offer

  1286. the

  1287. kindness

  1288. that

  1289. we

  1290. extend

  1291. and

  1292. the

  1293. source

  1294. behind

  1295. it

  1296. the

  1297. force

  1298. behind

  1299. it

  1300. isn't

  1301. in

  1302. our

  1303. own

  1304. hearts

  1305. isn't

  1306. in

  1307. our

  1308. own

  1309. capacity

  1310. to

  1311. summon

  1312. up

  1313. mercy

  1314. it's

  1315. in

  1316. Jesus

  1317. Christ

  1318. himself

  1319. and

  1320. what

  1321. we

  1322. see

  1323. when

  1324. we

  1325. look

  1326. at

  1327. Jesus

  1328. is

  1329. a

  1330. life

  1331. on

  1332. earth

  1333. marked

  1334. by

  1335. deep

  1336. mercy

  1337. towards

  1338. sinners

  1339. and

  1340. sufferers

  1341. so

  1342. let's

  1343. look

  1344. really

  1345. briefly

  1346. at

  1347. this

  1348. little

  1349. section

  1350. so

  1351. and

  1352. remember

  1353. the

  1354. Pharisees

  1355. so

  1356. let's

  1357. bring

  1358. them

  1359. out

  1360. of

  1361. the

  1362. shadows

  1363. for

  1364. a

  1365. moment

  1366. so

  1367. they

  1368. have

  1369. been

  1370. and

  1371. they

  1372. continue

  1373. to

  1374. challenge

  1375. Jesus

  1376. on

  1377. his

  1378. law

  1379. keeping

  1380. and

  1381. remember

  1382. they're

  1383. not

  1384. challenging

  1385. him

  1386. on

  1387. are

  1388. you

  1389. keeping

  1390. the

  1391. law

  1392. of

  1393. God

  1394. rather

  1395. is

  1396. Jesus

  1397. keeping

  1398. the

  1399. laws

  1400. of

  1401. the

  1402. Pharisees

  1403. because

  1404. they

  1405. have

  1406. made

  1407. their

  1408. own

  1409. rules

  1410. to

  1411. justify

  1412. themselves

  1413. and

  1414. it's

  1415. turned

  1416. them

  1417. into

  1418. a

  1419. very

  1420. narrow

  1421. people

  1422. a

  1423. very

  1424. harsh

  1425. and

  1426. judgmental

  1427. people

  1428. and

  1429. it's

  1430. led

  1431. them

  1432. ultimately

  1433. to

  1434. turn

  1435. against

  1436. Jesus

  1437. and

  1438. so

  1439. they

  1440. are

  1441. dominating

  1442. as

  1443. we

  1444. said

  1445. religious

  1446. !

  1447. and

  1448. social

  1449. life

  1450. there's

  1451. this

  1452. two

  1453. of

  1454. them

  1455. here

  1456. first

  1457. few

  1458. verses

  1459. of

  1460. chapter

  1461. 12

  1462. Jesus

  1463. disciples

  1464. are

  1465. hungry

  1466. on

  1467. the

  1468. Sabbath

  1469. and

  1470. so

  1471. they

  1472. go

  1473. and

  1474. they

  1475. get

  1476. some

  1477. corn

  1478. they

  1479. rub

  1480. the

  1481. corn

  1482. together

  1483. so

  1484. they

  1485. can

  1486. get

  1487. something

  1488. to

  1489. eat

  1490. and

  1491. the

  1492. Pharisees

  1493. jump

  1494. on

  1495. this

  1496. hey

  1497. you're

  1498. working

  1499. on

  1500. the

  1501. Sabbath

  1502. and

  1503. then

  1504. later

  1505. on

  1506. in

  1507. the

  1508. synagogue

  1509. from

  1510. verse

  1511. 9

  1512. onwards

  1513. here

  1514. comes

  1515. a

  1516. man

  1517. with

  1518. a

  1519. shriveled

  1520. hand

  1521. and

  1522. they

  1523. want

  1524. to

  1525. test

  1526. Jesus

  1527. will

  1528. Jesus

  1529. work

  1530. on

  1531. Sunday

  1532. by

  1533. showing

  1534. mercy

  1535. because

  1536. they've

  1537. decided

  1538. basically

  1539. unless

  1540. it's a

  1541. life or

  1542. death

  1543. situation

  1544. don't

  1545. show

  1546. mercy

  1547. because

  1548. that

  1549. could

  1550. be

  1551. work

  1552. can

  1553. you

  1554. imagine

  1555. how

  1556. miserable

  1557. and

  1558. anxious

  1559. and

  1560. self

  1561. righteous

  1562. and

  1563. despairing

  1564. this

  1565. society

  1566. could

  1567. be

  1568. controlled

  1569. by

  1570. this

  1571. kind

  1572. of

  1573. justify

  1574. yourself

  1575. by

  1576. law

  1577. keeping

  1578. attitude

  1579. and

  1580. then

  1581. here

  1582. comes

  1583. Jesus

  1584. and

  1585. he

  1586. bursts

  1587. onto

  1588. the

  1589. scene

  1590. and

  1591. immediately

  1592. people

  1593. flocked

  1594. him

  1595. this

  1596. is

  1597. a

  1598. new

  1599. message

  1600. this

  1601. is

  1602. a

  1603. new

  1604. mission

  1605. this

  1606. is

  1607. a

  1608. new

  1609. way

  1610. of

  1611. life

  1612. because

  1613. Jesus

  1614. reveals

  1615. the

  1616. heart

  1617. of

  1618. God

  1619. look

  1620. what

  1621. Jesus

  1622. says

  1623. in

  1624. verse

  1625. 7

  1626. if

  1627. you

  1628. had

  1629. known

  1630. what

  1631. these

  1632. words

  1633. mean

  1634. I

  1635. desire

  1636. mercy

  1637. not

  1638. sacrifice

  1639. you

  1640. would

  1641. not

  1642. condemn

  1643. the

  1644. innocent

  1645. mercy

  1646. lies

  1647. at the

  1648. heart

  1649. of

  1650. the

  1651. mission

  1652. of

  1653. Jesus

  1654. because

  1655. God's

  1656. heart

  1657. is a

  1658. merciful

  1659. one

  1660. so

  1661. Jesus

  1662. will

  1663. respond

  1664. to the

  1665. critics

  1666. human

  1667. need

  1668. hunger

  1669. it

  1670. trumps

  1671. your

  1672. ritual

  1673. and

  1674. your

  1675. rules

  1676. the

  1677. priests

  1678. need

  1679. to

  1680. worship

  1681. on

  1682. the

  1683. Sabbath

  1684. when

  1685. there's

  1686. many

  1687. more

  1688. offerings

  1689. coming

  1690. in

  1691. that

  1692. trumps

  1693. regulations

  1694. about

  1695. work

  1696. mercy

  1697. over

  1698. sacrifice

  1699. and

  1700. then

  1701. in

  1702. verses

  1703. 9

  1704. to

  1705. 14

  1706. we

  1707. see

  1708. him

  1709. apply

  1710. the

  1711. truth

  1712. as

  1713. he

  1714. shows

  1715. mercy

  1716. in

  1717. this

  1718. healing

  1719. miracle

  1720. and

  1721. Jesus

  1722. replies

  1723. to

  1724. his

  1725. opponents

  1726. look

  1727. at

  1728. verse

  1729. 11

  1730. and

  1731. verse

  1732. 12

  1733. if

  1734. you

  1735. had

  1736. a

  1737. sheep

  1738. and

  1739. it

  1740. fell

  1741. into

  1742. a

  1743. pit

  1744. on

  1745. the

  1746. Sabbath

  1747. you

  1748. take

  1749. hold

  1750. of

  1751. it

  1752. how

  1753. much

  1754. more

  1755. valuable

  1756. is

  1757. a

  1758. person

  1759. than

  1760. a

  1761. sheep

  1762. therefore

  1763. it

  1764. is

  1765. lawful

  1766. to

  1767. do

  1768. good

  1769. on

  1770. the

  1771. Sabbath

  1772. there's

  1773. that hypocrisy

  1774. at the

  1775. heart

  1776. of their

  1777. religion

  1778. but

  1779. Jesus

  1780. exposes

  1781. it

  1782. it's

  1783. good

  1784. to

  1785. show

  1786. mercy

  1787. to

  1788. an

  1789. animal

  1790. how

  1791. much

  1792. more

  1793. valuable

  1794. people

  1795. are

  1796. therefore

  1797. it

  1798. is

  1799. right

  1800. to

  1801. show

  1802. mercy

  1803. to

  1804. a

  1805. person

  1806. every

  1807. day

  1808. of the

  1809. week

  1810. a

  1811. Sabbath

  1812. day

  1813. is

  1814. a

  1815. good

  1816. day

  1817. as we

  1818. look

  1819. at

  1820. Jesus

  1821. and

  1822. as

  1823. the

  1824. church

  1825. builds

  1826. its

  1827. life

  1828. on

  1829. Jesus

  1830. we

  1831. discover

  1832. that

  1833. the

  1834. kingdom

  1835. of

  1836. God

  1837. the

  1838. community

  1839. of

  1840. Christ

  1841. it

  1842. is

  1843. shaped

  1844. by

  1845. God's

  1846. mercy

  1847. so

  1848. that

  1849. we

  1850. might

  1851. in

  1852. our

  1853. own

  1854. way

  1855. in

  1856. our

  1857. own

  1858. day

  1859. showcase

  1860. God's

  1861. mercy

  1862. in

  1863. the

  1864. world

  1865. it's

  1866. no

  1867. wonder

  1868. when you

  1869. read

  1870. the

  1871. gospels

  1872. the

  1873. weak

  1874. the

  1875. marginalized

  1876. those

  1877. who

  1878. felt

  1879. guilty

  1880. and

  1881. oppressed

  1882. they

  1883. flocked

  1884. to

  1885. Jesus

  1886. to

  1887. receive

  1888. this

  1889. mercy

  1890. and

  1891. grace

  1892. and

  1893. it's

  1894. wonderful

  1895. for us

  1896. to

  1897. remember

  1898. you

  1899. when we

  1900. invite

  1901. people

  1902. come and

  1903. try church

  1904. with us

  1905. what are we

  1906. inviting

  1907. people

  1908. into

  1909. well we

  1910. want them

  1911. to discover

  1912. a people

  1913. within this

  1914. place

  1915. who love

  1916. Jesus

  1917. and love

  1918. other

  1919. people

  1920. a people

  1921. who have

  1922. received

  1923. mercy

  1924. so much

  1925. that it

  1926. flows

  1927. from us

  1928. and is

  1929. shared

  1930. within

  1931. us

  1932. a people

  1933. drawn

  1934. into

  1935. relationship

  1936. with

  1937. God

  1938. through

  1939. faith

  1940. in

  1941. Jesus

  1942. resting

  1943. in a

  1944. secure

  1945. salvation

  1946. enjoying

  1947. God's

  1948. mercy

  1949. that

  1950. gives

  1951. us a

  1952. freedom

  1953. and a

  1954. delight

  1955. to invite

  1956. other

  1957. people

  1958. to

  1959. experience

  1960. it

  1961. for

  1962. themselves

  1963. with

  1964. Jesus

  1965. we

  1966. have

  1967. the

  1968. power

  1969. and

  1970. the

  1971. motivation

  1972. to

  1973. practice

  1974. this

  1975. kind

  1976. of

  1977. mercy

  1978. in

  1979. our

  1980. everyday

  1981. lives

  1982. to

  1983. let

  1984. it

  1985. shape

  1986. our

  1987. relationship

  1988. our

  1989. capacity

  1990. to be

  1991. patient

  1992. and

  1993. forgiving

  1994. and

  1995. welcoming

  1996. to

  1997. others

  1998. it

  1999. has

  2000. the

  2001. ability

  2002. to

  2003. shape

  2004. and

  2005. influence

  2006. our

  2007. work

  2008. that

  2009. we

  2010. work

  2011. to

  2012. bless

  2013. others

  2014. to

  2015. practice

  2016. kindness

  2017. over

  2018. competition

  2019. can

  2020. change

  2021. our

  2022. mindset

  2023. as

  2024. we

  2025. consider

  2026. all

  2027. the

  2028. mercy

  2029. that

  2030. God

  2031. has

  2032. shown

  2033. us

  2034. in

  2035. Jesus

  2036. gratitude

  2037. trumps

  2038. grumbling

  2039. we

  2040. prioritize

  2041. enjoying

  2042. God

  2043. and his

  2044. gospel

  2045. and in

  2046. ways that

  2047. mark us

  2048. out as

  2049. the people

  2050. of

  2051. Jesus

  2052. so

  2053. Jesus

  2054. invited

  2055. people

  2056. to a

  2057. Christ

  2058. centered

  2059. life

  2060. and we

  2061. who are

  2062. his

  2063. people

  2064. we invite

  2065. others

  2066. to the

  2067. Christ

  2068. centered

  2069. life

  2070. also

  2071. so

  2072. what we

  2073. do

  2074. when we

  2075. experience

  2076. anything

  2077. good

  2078. from the

  2079. most trivial

  2080. the new

  2081. restaurant

  2082. or the

  2083. new

  2084. book

  2085. so we

  2086. do it

  2087. as we

  2088. come to

  2089. discover

  2090. and discover

  2091. again

  2092. the wonder

  2093. of Jesus

  2094. the son

  2095. of God

  2096. and the

  2097. savior

  2098. of the

  2099. world

  2100. as we

  2101. believe

  2102. that he

  2103. is

  2104. God's

  2105. revelation

  2106. to the

  2107. world

  2108. we

  2109. come

  2110. to enjoy

  2111. him

  2112. deeply

  2113. and then

  2114. we

  2115. go

  2116. to invite

  2117. others

  2118. into

  2119. relationship

  2120. with God

  2121. through

  2122. faith

  2123. in

  2124. Jesus

  2125. rest

  2126. from

  2127. God

  2128. through

  2129. the

  2130. rescue

  2131. of

  2132. Jesus

  2133. and

  2134. mercy

  2135. from

  2136. God

  2137. knowing

  2138. the

  2139. compassionate

  2140. heart

  2141. of

  2142. Jesus

  2143. let's

  2144. pray

  2145. together

  2146. Lord

  2147. our

  2148. God

  2149. we

  2150. are

  2151. so

  2152. thankful

  2153. for

  2154. Jesus

  2155. and

  2156. his

  2157. life

  2158. as we

  2159. discover

  2160. it

  2161. in

  2162. the

  2163. gospels

  2164. we

  2165. thank

  2166. you

  2167. that

  2168. Jesus

  2169. is

  2170. the

  2171. one

  2172. who

  2173. can

  2174. bring

  2175. us

  2176. into

  2177. relationship

  2178. with

  2179. the

  2180. living

  2181. God

  2182. we

  2183. know

  2184. so

  2185. many

  2186. people

  2187. who

  2188. are

  2189. spiritual

  2190. and

  2191. who

  2192. are

  2193. longing

  2194. for

  2195. something

  2196. more
