  1. Now, can we turn again in our Bibles, this time to the book of Genesis, page 12, if you're using a church Bible.

  2. We're going to read a couple of sections from Genesis 11.

  3. Over the next four Sundays, we're going to be looking at different scenes from the life of Abraham to help us answer some important questions.

  4. Now, this time our question is, what's gone wrong with the world?

  5. And to help us to answer that, we're going to be in Genesis 11, beginning at verse 1.

  6. Now, the whole world had one language and a common speech.

  7. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

  8. They said to each other, come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.

  9. They used brick instead of stone and bitumen for mortar.

  10. Then they said, come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves.

  11. Otherwise, we'll be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

  12. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.

  13. The Lord said, if as one people speaking the same language, they've begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

  14. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.

  15. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth and they stopped building the city.

  16. That is why it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.

  17. From there, the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

  18. And then from verse 10 to 26, we get a family tree of Shem.

  19. But we're going to pick up in verse 27, where we're introduced to the account of Tira's family line.

  20. Tira became the father of Abraham, Nahor and Haran.

  21. And Haran became the father of Lot.

  22. While his father Tira was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans in the land of his birth.

  23. Abraham and Nahor both married.

  24. The name of Abraham's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah.

  25. She was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.

  26. Now Sarai was childless, because she was not able to conceive.

  27. Tira took his son Abraham, his grandson Lot, son of Haran,

  28. and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abraham.

  29. And together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan.

  30. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

  31. Tira lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.

  32. Amen. This is God's word.

  33. So as I said, we're thinking about this question, what's gone wrong with the world?

  34. In 2025, so just last week, there was a global concerns report.

  35. It was a survey done, 30 different countries across all continents,

  36. asking people to reflect on what concerns them most about the world.

  37. And the top four answers were these.

  38. Inflation, immigration, corruption, and conflict.

  39. Now as you think about what's gone wrong with the world,

  40. I wonder if you would agree with those, or what else would you add?

  41. There is probably a lengthy list that we would each have.

  42. When we come to the message of Genesis 11,

  43. and indeed the message of the whole Bible,

  44. we see that there are visible problems in society.

  45. We are aware of them.

  46. Crime, abuse, injustice, war.

  47. But all of those problems, they stem from a deeper source.

  48. The Bible helps us to see what's gone wrong,

  49. that when people act as if they are God,

  50. or when we live rejecting God, what the Bible calls sin,

  51. that is what the Bible says is what's gone wrong with the world.

  52. To think about the classic G.K. Chesterton anecdote you may have heard,

  53. when the Times newspaper back in the late 1910s,

  54. invited people to write in and respond to this question,

  55. what's gone wrong with the world,

  56. he simply wrote,

  57. Dear Sirs, I am yours sincerely, G.K. Chesterton.

  58. That people are the source of the world's problems,

  59. was Chesterton's observation,

  60. and I think it's the observation we see in Genesis 11.

  61. So we're going to explore today the problem of a failed human project.

  62. To recognize it as a monument to self, this Tower of Babel,

  63. and then we need to see God's responses to it.

  64. So over the next four weeks, as I said,

  65. we're going to be meeting Abraham.

  66. Abraham described in the Bible as the father of faith,

  67. and we know he's a key figure within Christianity,

  68. also within Judaism and Islam,

  69. a huge figure to consider.

  70. Today he's kind of in the background, we will meet him.

  71. I guess it's an invitation to come back and find out some more next week.

  72. He lived an amazing life.

  73. If you want to do any homework,

  74. read Genesis 12 to 22 over this week or the coming weeks.

  75. And you see a man where God is working in his life in remarkable ways,

  76. getting involved in his story.

  77. We are going to hear some really rich and wonderful promises

  78. that God gives Abraham, which are good news for everybody.

  79. We also see real challenges, which are a challenge and enable his faith to grow.

  80. And the story of Abraham is also going to help us to answer some key questions.

  81. It's going to help us to answer questions like,

  82. who is God?

  83. How can I know God?

  84. What does faith in God look like?

  85. And today, what's gone wrong with the world?

  86. And what Genesis 11 does for us is,

  87. while it reveals that the world has walked away from God,

  88. it also offers hope that God will send Jesus to bring us back to himself.

  89. So we're going to look, first of all, at the human problem,

  90. and then we're going to look at God's answer.

  91. And the human problem can be summarized here as pride and personal glory.

  92. In the early 1900s, cruise liners, those big old ships,

  93. they were the way to travel.

  94. And in the early 1900s, there was a great race on

  95. to see who could build the fastest ship to cross the ocean.

  96. Or other companies were interested,

  97. who could build the most luxurious ship to cross the ocean.

  98. And the White Star Company, they went down the luxury line,

  99. leading them to build and then launch the Titanic.

  100. Incredible design and incredible luxury came together.

  101. But the Titanic also came with a boast.

  102. There was the claim that this boat was unsinkable.

  103. And so when the first voyage began,

  104. there was the expectation that Titanic was on the route

  105. to bringing the boat and the company great fame and great glory.

  106. But we know what happens, don't we?

  107. In 1912, it sank.

  108. And tragically, over 1,500 lives were lost.

  109. It wanted a name.

  110. It wanted glory.

  111. But that name is associated with tragic failure.

  112. The story of the Tower of Babel is its own Titanic building project.

  113. And this is about making much more than just a grand city and a high tower.

  114. It's a people wanting to make a name for themselves.

  115. That Babel was a building project aimed at personal security

  116. and personal glory

  117. and people becoming godlike in their ambition.

  118. And the outcome of that building project,

  119. a name associated with shame and confusion,

  120. a monument to human folly.

  121. So the author of Genesis 11 wants to tell us that story

  122. and he uses language and he picks up themes to support his point.

  123. So look with me at our text.

  124. And it begins in the first couple of verses

  125. with the people of the world on the move.

  126. Now the whole world had one language

  127. and a common speech.

  128. As people moved east, they found a plane and they settled there.

  129. So notice that at this time in history,

  130. humanity is united.

  131. They share a language.

  132. They share a culture.

  133. Think about how different that is from our experience today.

  134. We just have to look around this building

  135. and we recognize different languages and cultures.

  136. And we go outside into the festival

  137. and we recognize that there's an incredible diversity.

  138. And that's a great thing.

  139. And we celebrate that.

  140. But at this point in history, unity,

  141. the first danger sign for this united people

  142. is here in the idea that they are moving east

  143. and they are settling.

  144. And we might think, well, what's the problem with moving east?

  145. Well, if we go back earlier in Genesis,

  146. we discover whenever people are moving east,

  147. they're moving away from God.

  148. So after Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

  149. eat the forbidden fruit and God sends them out,

  150. they are sent east.

  151. After Cain commits the first murder

  152. and kills his brother Abel,

  153. he is sent to wander east.

  154. So when we discover that all the people are moving east,

  155. this is a sign that the world is walking away from God.

  156. And the fact they're settling

  157. reminds us they are comfortable in this position.

  158. So the people of the world, they're on the move

  159. and they're also a people on a mission.

  160. That's there in verses three and four, isn't it?

  161. They're working together on this epic construction project.

  162. And remember, they have no machinery.

  163. They have very basic tools,

  164. but they're taking the best of modern tech that they had.

  165. They've got brick and bitumen

  166. and they use it for this great building project.

  167. Now we are familiar, aren't we,

  168. with the competition to build big.

  169. I guess last century,

  170. all the big buildings were probably situated in America,

  171. but now it's moved towards the Middle East, hasn't it?

  172. And those great towers,

  173. those skyscrapers are a sign of ambition and power,

  174. a way of placing one's stamp on the world.

  175. So the biggest at the moment is the Burj Khalifa,

  176. but there's competition from Jeddah and Riah

  177. wanting to build bigger,

  178. that they are known as the place

  179. with the highest skyscraper.

  180. Well, on this original building site of Babel,

  181. you can hear the personal pride,

  182. the sense of ambition,

  183. the drive for glory.

  184. It's there in the language, verse three and four.

  185. How many times do we find them saying,

  186. let us build ourselves so that we may make a name,

  187. otherwise we'll be scattered.

  188. Here are a people,

  189. and the Bible tells us,

  190. they have been made in God's image,

  191. because everybody is, including us,

  192. but they are not interested

  193. in getting God's opinion,

  194. getting God's input,

  195. or seeking God's glory.

  196. Look at the reason why they're building the tower.

  197. They want to build the tower

  198. to avoid being scattered.

  199. And we may instinctively think,

  200. well, that's okay, security's a good thing.

  201. But not when we go back in the Bible

  202. and we discover God has said to people,

  203. fill the earth,

  204. spread out,

  205. so that the glory of God

  206. would fill the earth.

  207. God says, scatter,

  208. and they say, gather.

  209. God says, spread my glory,

  210. and they say,

  211. no, we want our own glory,

  212. thanks very much.

  213. Because the text tells us

  214. they want to make a name for themselves.

  215. We are made to worship God,

  216. but personal glory is clearly

  217. their number one priority

  218. in this new city.

  219. They are not honoring God,

  220. wanting to make his name great,

  221. and they're not trusting

  222. that God will make a name for them.

  223. They want to make a name for themselves.

  224. And notice too,

  225. they want to make a tower

  226. that reaches to the heavens.

  227. And that's not simply saying

  228. we want to build up and build high.

  229. And that's saying

  230. we want to reach God's level.

  231. We want to become like God.

  232. So here is a people,

  233. and they're using the technology

  234. that's available to them,

  235. and they're all working together

  236. effectively to get rid

  237. of the need of God.

  238. And so we're given,

  239. just in a few short verses,

  240. here is a snapshot of a people

  241. who are walking away from God,

  242. working to get rid

  243. of the need of him.

  244. And so Babel functions

  245. as a giant monument to the cell.

  246. If anybody has been on holiday

  247. in any of the ancient Roman sites,

  248. or maybe you've been

  249. to a place like Vietnam,

  250. you are going to have seen

  251. monuments and images

  252. all over the place.

  253. And those were used

  254. to claim personal glory

  255. and authority

  256. for the person who is depicted.

  257. Babel is like that.

  258. And we can also say

  259. that Babel is the first

  260. truly secular society.

  261. You know, the idea of secular,

  262. removing God from the picture.

  263. That's exactly what they're doing.

  264. It's the foundation of Babel,

  265. the sense of what progress

  266. looks like in Babel.

  267. It's all built on self

  268. with no word of God at all.

  269. The dream of these Babel builders

  270. is we can provide the security

  271. and the status

  272. and the good life

  273. that we are looking for,

  274. and we don't need

  275. to concern ourselves with God.

  276. Back to our question,

  277. if we ask Genesis 11,

  278. what's gone wrong with the world?

  279. The answer is

  280. that we as people

  281. have walked away from God

  282. and his ways.

  283. The problem is human pride.

  284. The problem is when

  285. we seek personal glory

  286. at the expense of God

  287. and his design for our lives.

  288. I wonder if we thought

  289. about life in those terms.

  290. I wonder if we've asked ourselves

  291. the question,

  292. or can we see why

  293. Genesis gives that answer?

  294. A brief look through history

  295. might help us.

  296. Think about the world empires,

  297. you know,

  298. the desire for expansion.

  299. What are they built on so often?

  300. Look at your history books,

  301. you'll find greed,

  302. injustice,

  303. slavery,

  304. exploitation,

  305. racism,

  306. and the desire

  307. for personal glory.

  308. Think about the world wars.

  309. At 20th century,

  310. people were celebrating,

  311. oh, look how technologically

  312. advanced we are.

  313. Look at all our scientific progress.

  314. How is the progress used

  315. to create weapons of destruction

  316. and mass destruction?

  317. Or look around

  318. at contemporary society.

  319. What are some of the things

  320. that worry us?

  321. What makes the headlines

  322. or what gives us

  323. sleepless nights?

  324. Think about migrants

  325. and the realities

  326. of human trafficking.

  327. Think about the hate

  328. and the violence

  329. that we're confronted with

  330. in our news headlines

  331. day after day.

  332. Maybe it's the race

  333. of the companies

  334. to build powerful AI

  335. and we have that fear.

  336. Well, what if it becomes

  337. untethered and on the loose?

  338. What if people are asking,

  339. not should we,

  340. but simply can we?

  341. Maybe our anxiety

  342. is to do with social media,

  343. social media platforms

  344. or social media influencers

  345. and maybe the impact

  346. that it has

  347. on a younger generation.

  348. Go to the roots

  349. of all of those things

  350. and we're going to see

  351. elements of human pride,

  352. human ambition,

  353. human self-interest,

  354. seeking personal glory

  355. and not seeking God.

  356. And the Bible says

  357. that's a recipe for chaos

  358. and suffering

  359. in so many ways.

  360. And then instead

  361. of just looking out,

  362. if we look in,

  363. if we're brave enough

  364. to turn the spotlight

  365. on ourselves,

  366. what do we find?

  367. Isn't it true

  368. that our own personal pride

  369. and our desire for glory

  370. that that can produce harm

  371. in our relationships?

  372. Isn't it our seeking status

  373. and glory that leads us

  374. to perhaps tear others down

  375. so that we can build ourselves up?

  376. Because if I want to be number one

  377. and if I want my name to be great

  378. and then you also want

  379. your name to be great,

  380. well, what happens?

  381. Well, now we've got clash

  382. and conflict

  383. and something has to give

  384. and there's going to be winners

  385. and there's going to be losers

  386. and there's conflict.

  387. But maybe we also find this.

  388. Maybe we also can identify

  389. with Babel in this way.

  390. When we remove ourselves

  391. from God's story,

  392. when a society or a person

  393. removes oneself

  394. from God's plan

  395. for how life is supposed to be,

  396. we're still trying to build

  397. a life for ourselves

  398. and we're still trying

  399. to make progress,

  400. but maybe we're not sure

  401. exactly what that's supposed

  402. to look like.

  403. What is progress

  404. supposed to be?

  405. What does the good life

  406. really look like?

  407. And for many people,

  408. it leads to a feeling

  409. of being anxious

  410. and frantic and hopeless

  411. because we can't figure it out

  412. by ourselves.

  413. There is something within us

  414. that as people,

  415. we often dream

  416. that we have the answers,

  417. but we're not so good

  418. at seeing that often

  419. we're part of the problem.

  420. I came across the beginning

  421. of the UN Charter

  422. in 1948 this week.

  423. So after the Second World War,

  424. that determination

  425. that the nations would work

  426. together for peace.

  427. And even to just read

  428. the preamble,

  429. you discover what big claims,

  430. I mean,

  431. great ambitions,

  432. but big claims

  433. that we can make

  434. for ourselves.

  435. Listen to how

  436. the Charter begins.

  437. We,

  438. the peoples

  439. of the United Nations,

  440. will succeed

  441. in getting rid

  442. of the scourge of war.

  443. We will promote

  444. social progress

  445. and better standards

  446. of life

  447. in larger freedom.

  448. You know,

  449. that sounds wonderful,

  450. doesn't it?

  451. But what's the reality?

  452. There is still

  453. the horrors of war.

  454. There is still

  455. the reality of oppression.

  456. Millions of people

  457. are still being bought

  458. and sold

  459. by people traffickers.

  460. The heart

  461. of the Babel problem

  462. is the problem

  463. of the human heart.

  464. So we left to ourselves

  465. are not going to fix it.

  466. When we reject

  467. and remove God

  468. and His design,

  469. when we replace God

  470. with self

  471. at the center,

  472. when a life

  473. or a society

  474. is driven by pride

  475. and a desire

  476. for personal glory,

  477. Genesis 11

  478. reminds us

  479. it creates

  480. so many problems.

  481. Some of you

  482. might remember

  483. the episode

  484. of the sitcom

  485. Friends

  486. where Rachel

  487. wants to make

  488. an English recipe.

  489. So she decides

  490. she's going to make

  491. an English trifle.

  492. But the problem is

  493. that her cookbook

  494. has got two pages

  495. stuck together.

  496. So she's trying

  497. to make trifle,

  498. she turns the page

  499. and she's reading

  500. the instructions

  501. for making

  502. a shepherd's pie.

  503. You try and make

  504. a trifle

  505. with the ingredients

  506. for a shepherd's pie

  507. and the result

  508. is obviously

  509. going to be

  510. a disaster.

  511. Now far more seriously

  512. Genesis 11

  513. is telling us

  514. as people

  515. we have taken

  516. God's good idea

  517. of progress

  518. but we're following

  519. entirely the wrong

  520. direction

  521. because we're rejecting

  522. God in favor of self

  523. and it leads to chaos

  524. and confusion.

  525. And so what we need

  526. to see next

  527. is God's responses

  528. to see as their hope.

  529. So if that was

  530. the problem

  531. pride and seeking

  532. personal glory

  533. let's see God's

  534. responses

  535. because there's

  536. two responses

  537. the first response

  538. that we need to

  539. recognize is the

  540. response of judgment.

  541. So look at verse 5

  542. and notice the irony.

  543. So here's these

  544. people that are

  545. trying to make

  546. a tower that reaches

  547. to the heavens

  548. but the Lord

  549. came down

  550. to see the city

  551. and the tower

  552. that people were

  553. building.

  554. And I think

  555. the author of Genesis

  556. is inviting us

  557. to imagine God

  558. as it were

  559. stooping down

  560. and squinting

  561. maybe he's getting

  562. his magnifying glass

  563. out if you've seen

  564. Honey I Shrunk the Kids

  565. trying to see

  566. this tiny speck

  567. of a tower

  568. that the people

  569. thought was so

  570. grand and glorious.

  571. God is so much

  572. greater.

  573. And so it's full

  574. of irony

  575. but verse 6

  576. reminds us

  577. this is no joke.

  578. The Lord said

  579. if as one people

  580. speaking the same

  581. language

  582. they've begun

  583. to do this

  584. then nothing

  585. they plan to do

  586. will be impossible

  587. for them.

  588. Notice God knows

  589. the human heart

  590. and he recognizes

  591. that the Tower of Babel

  592. is really only

  593. phase one.

  594. This is a people

  595. who are entirely

  596. set on

  597. I'm going to

  598. build a life

  599. without God.

  600. And so what happens

  601. is that the creator

  602. of the universe

  603. the designer

  604. who tells us

  605. how life should go

  606. he intervenes.

  607. He has been

  608. insulted

  609. and rejected

  610. and rebelled

  611. against

  612. and so God

  613. gets involved.

  614. Some of us

  615. will likely

  616. have been

  617. or will go

  618. to the cinema

  619. to watch

  620. The Odyssey

  621. Homer's

  622. kind of epic

  623. poem

  624. on screen

  625. 7th century

  626. or so

  627. Greek poem.

  628. It has loads

  629. of weird stuff

  630. in it

  631. but one thing

  632. that I think

  633. Homer gets right

  634. is

  635. it is a bad

  636. thing

  637. to insult

  638. the God.

  639. the story

  640. is full of

  641. even more

  642. so

  643. it is a

  644. serious thing

  645. to insult

  646. and to ignore

  647. the one true

  648. and living God.

  649. And so God

  650. comes

  651. and he confuses

  652. language

  653. and he scatters

  654. people

  655. and we can just

  656. imagine the chaos

  657. you imagine

  658. any project

  659. where nobody

  660. can communicate

  661. because there's

  662. culture barrier

  663. and there's

  664. language barrier

  665. and what happens

  666. here is that

  667. God will not

  668. allow the people

  669. of the world

  670. to continue

  671. on their own

  672. merry way

  673. in rebellion

  674. against him.

  675. And so this is

  676. judgment

  677. on sin

  678. that rejects

  679. God

  680. on hearts

  681. that are turned

  682. inwards

  683. in human pride.

  684. They wanted

  685. a life

  686. and a world

  687. and progress

  688. without God

  689. but in the

  690. Lord's judgment

  691. it all comes

  692. crashing down

  693. and it will

  694. come crashing

  695. down.

  696. And so there is

  697. that warning

  698. of a God

  699. who judges

  700. rebellion.

  701. But that's only

  702. one of God's

  703. responses.

  704. The second

  705. response

  706. is the promise

  707. of rescue

  708. and reconciliation.

  709. So, so far

  710. I think we've

  711. been dealing

  712. with the bad

  713. news of what's

  714. gone wrong

  715. and hopefully

  716. we're seeing

  717. that it's honest

  718. but it's not

  719. yet hopeful.

  720. To find hope

  721. we need to turn

  722. to that second

  723. passage that we

  724. looked at.

  725. We need to

  726. turn to that

  727. family tree

  728. and you might

  729. be thinking

  730. well what on

  731. earth has a

  732. family tree

  733. got to do

  734. with hope

  735. and I guess

  736. the next few

  737. weeks will

  738. unveil that

  739. so bear with

  740. me in that

  741. sense.

  742. But one way

  743. to think about

  744. it is this.

  745. So over the

  746. summer our

  747. family we did

  748. a little bit

  749. of a Spider-Man

  750. movie catch-up

  751. because there's

  752. a new one

  753. coming out

  754. and if you

  755. know anything

  756. about the

  757. superhero genre

  758. think about

  759. what you have.

  760. You have

  761. often a very

  762. unexpected hero

  763. who is chosen

  764. in a surprising

  765. way in the

  766. end to save

  767. a city or

  768. save a world.

  769. That's a

  770. superhero trope

  771. but it's also

  772. in a sense a

  773. biblical principle.

  774. God chooses

  775. one for the

  776. sake of the

  777. many.

  778. And what we're

  779. going to see in

  780. the coming weeks

  781. is that God

  782. chooses Abraham

  783. a very old

  784. man who had

  785. previously been

  786. worshipping idols

  787. and he's

  788. going to

  789. speak to

  790. him and

  791. he's going

  792. to save

  793. him and

  794. as we saw

  795. he sets

  796. him on a

  797. journey and

  798. what God's

  799. going to do

  800. for Abraham

  801. is he's going

  802. to make a

  803. name for

  804. Abraham and

  805. he's going

  806. to give

  807. Abraham wonderful

  808. promises and

  809. one of the

  810. things that he

  811. says to

  812. Abraham is

  813. that Abraham

  814. from your

  815. family will

  816. come a source

  817. of God's

  818. blessing to

  819. all nations.

  820. It's there

  821. at the beginning

  822. of chapter 12.

  823. So through

  824. Abraham's family

  825. comes a hope of

  826. rescue and

  827. reconciliation.

  828. God's going

  829. to extend

  830. salvation.

  831. to the whole

  832. world.

  833. And so

  834. Genesis 11

  835. prepares us

  836. for the truth

  837. that there is

  838. hope coming.

  839. That yes,

  840. the Bible is

  841. very honest,

  842. the world is

  843. in a mess.

  844. And yes,

  845. God does

  846. judge sinful

  847. rebellion,

  848. but wonderfully,

  849. yes,

  850. also God has

  851. a plan to

  852. redeem and

  853. rescue and

  854. restore.

  855. And the

  856. whole Bible

  857. tells us that

  858. he does that

  859. wonderfully through

  860. his son,

  861. the Lord Jesus,

  862. who comes from

  863. Abraham's family.

  864. So let's just

  865. look for a few

  866. minutes at how

  867. Jesus is God's

  868. answer to the

  869. human problem.

  870. That while we

  871. as people have

  872. walked away from

  873. God,

  874. God comes to

  875. bring people

  876. back to himself.

  877. So first of all,

  878. who is Jesus?

  879. Well, we know

  880. that Jesus is the

  881. eternal son of God,

  882. glory of heaven,

  883. worshipped by

  884. hundreds of

  885. thousands of

  886. angels,

  887. but he is the

  888. God who came

  889. down to us

  890. to become one

  891. of us.

  892. Fast forward to

  893. the New Testament.

  894. First book of the

  895. New Testament is

  896. the book of

  897. Matthew.

  898. Matthew begins

  899. his story of

  900. the life of

  901. Jesus in a way

  902. that I think we

  903. find as modern

  904. people surprising.

  905. It starts with

  906. a family tree.

  907. Why start an

  908. exciting story

  909. with a family

  910. tree?

  911. Because Matthew

  912. wants us to

  913. know Jesus is

  914. the one from

  915. Abraham's family

  916. who is the

  917. promised one.

  918. He is God's

  919. redeemer.

  920. He is the way

  921. God will reconcile

  922. people to himself.

  923. So God the

  924. Father sends

  925. God the Son

  926. into a world

  927. that needs

  928. rescue.

  929. And Jesus,

  930. the Son of

  931. God, he comes

  932. and he lives

  933. a perfect life.

  934. So different

  935. from the people

  936. of Babel,

  937. so different

  938. often from us.

  939. Full of

  940. humility.

  941. Serving others,

  942. taking upon

  943. himself the

  944. title of a

  945. servant,

  946. washing his

  947. disciples'

  948. feet.

  949. He lives

  950. always and

  951. only for his

  952. Father's glory,

  953. not trying to

  954. make a name

  955. for himself.

  956. And he comes

  957. with an amazing

  958. message.

  959. I am the way

  960. back to God.

  961. He has come

  962. from the

  963. Father so we

  964. could know

  965. God as

  966. Father.

  967. And then as

  968. we come

  969. towards Jesus'

  970. death, we

  971. discover that

  972. he dies,

  973. this perfect

  974. one.

  975. He dies on

  976. a cross.

  977. And the Bible

  978. tells us why.

  979. In 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:18

  980. verse 18,

  981. we are told

  982. Christ died,

  983. the righteous

  984. for the

  985. unrighteous,

  986. to bring

  987. us to

  988. God.

  989. Do you

  990. know that's

  991. the goal of

  992. Jesus coming

  993. into the

  994. world?

  995. That's the

  996. greatest good

  997. that Jesus

  998. brings so

  999. that you

  1000. and I,

  1001. by trusting

  1002. in Jesus,

  1003. we can

  1004. know life

  1005. with God.

  1006. God gives

  1007. us himself

  1008. to restore

  1009. what sin

  1010. has ruined.

  1011. And then

  1012. after his

  1013. resurrection,

  1014. so Jesus

  1015. dies three

  1016. days later,

  1017. he's risen,

  1018. he returns

  1019. to heaven,

  1020. because Jesus

  1021. belongs there,

  1022. and from

  1023. heaven he

  1024. sends his

  1025. spirit.

  1026. And we

  1027. read about

  1028. it in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1029. chapter 2.

  1030. And did you

  1031. notice what

  1032. happened in

  1033. the book of

  1034. Acts?

  1035. There are

  1036. nations,

  1037. people from

  1038. different languages

  1039. and places,

  1040. and together

  1041. they hear the

  1042. good news of

  1043. Jesus.

  1044. So here's a

  1045. new people

  1046. united,

  1047. different

  1048. languages,

  1049. different

  1050. cultures,

  1051. worshipping,

  1052. celebrating the

  1053. good news of

  1054. Jesus.

  1055. Jesus.

  1056. And we

  1057. can go to

  1058. the very

  1059. end of

  1060. the Bible,

  1061. Revelation

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  1062. chapter 7,

  1063. you get this

  1064. vision of

  1065. what's life

  1066. going to be

  1067. like in

  1068. the new

  1069. creation.

  1070. And we

  1071. find people

  1072. from all

  1073. nations and

  1074. tribes and

  1075. peoples and

  1076. languages,

  1077. and they're

  1078. worshipping,

  1079. and right at

  1080. the centre,

  1081. the source of

  1082. their word is

  1083. Jesus.

  1084. So do we

  1085. see what God

  1086. has in store

  1087. to do through

  1088. his son Jesus?

  1089. He is uniting

  1090. people together

  1091. again.

  1092. Not in pride,

  1093. because pride

  1094. separates,

  1095. in worship.

  1096. A group of

  1097. people no

  1098. longer thinking

  1099. about our

  1100. own glory,

  1101. but now

  1102. captured by

  1103. God's glory.

  1104. And what the

  1105. Bible tells us

  1106. is that history

  1107. is progressing

  1108. in a great

  1109. building project,

  1110. but it's not

  1111. ours,

  1112. it's God's.

  1113. And Jesus is

  1114. the master

  1115. builder,

  1116. and he's also

  1117. the foundation.

  1118. And what Jesus

  1119. is doing right

  1120. now is Jesus

  1121. is calling people

  1122. from different

  1123. places and

  1124. different backgrounds.

  1125. And he's

  1126. giving people

  1127. the faith to

  1128. believe.

  1129. So people are

  1130. being united

  1131. to Jesus,

  1132. and they've

  1133. been brought

  1134. together into

  1135. the church of

  1136. Jesus.

  1137. And that takes

  1138. us to the

  1139. mission of the

  1140. church.

  1141. Why are we

  1142. here as a

  1143. local church?

  1144. We have a

  1145. mission.

  1146. We are workers

  1147. together on

  1148. Jesus'

  1149. building projects.

  1150. So what do

  1151. we do?

  1152. We tell people

  1153. about Jesus,

  1154. we put the

  1155. love and

  1156. the grace

  1157. of God

  1158. on display

  1159. so that

  1160. others can

  1161. be restored

  1162. to life

  1163. with God

  1164. too.

  1165. We are to

  1166. help people

  1167. to both

  1168. see and

  1169. to feel

  1170. that Jesus

  1171. is God's

  1172. great answer

  1173. to our

  1174. human problems

  1175. in the way

  1176. that we

  1177. practice unity

  1178. and peace

  1179. and love,

  1180. in the

  1181. welcome that

  1182. we extend,

  1183. in the

  1184. kindness that

  1185. we offer

  1186. across

  1187. difference.

  1188. So we

  1189. have here

  1190. in Genesis

  1191. 11 both

  1192. the indication

  1193. of what's

  1194. gone wrong

  1195. with the

  1196. world,

  1197. our walking

  1198. away,

  1199. our sinful

  1200. pride,

  1201. but it

  1202. also offers

  1203. hope that

  1204. the God of

  1205. grace and

  1206. love is not

  1207. done with

  1208. people and

  1209. that rather

  1210. he will come

  1211. in Jesus to

  1212. bring us

  1213. back into

  1214. relationship

  1215. with God.

  1216. And so

  1217. Jesus today

  1218. invites us to

  1219. come to

  1220. him.

  1221. for rescue

  1222. and

  1223. reconciliation.

  1224. Let me

  1225. pray for us.

  1226. Our God

  1227. and Father,

  1228. we thank

  1229. you that

  1230. the Bible

  1231. tells one

  1232. great story

  1233. of redemption,

  1234. that while it

  1235. is very

  1236. honest about

  1237. the reality

  1238. of the sin

  1239. in our hearts

  1240. and lives,

  1241. our own

  1242. pride and

  1243. our seeking

  1244. glory for

  1245. ourselves,

  1246. it also

  1247. shows us

  1248. your grace

  1249. and your

  1250. salvation,

  1251. that you

  1252. sent Jesus

  1253. to our

  1254. people who

  1255. are walking

  1256. far away

  1257. from you

  1258. to bring

  1259. us back

  1260. home so

  1261. that we

  1262. could call

  1263. you our

  1264. father,

  1265. so that we

  1266. could live

  1267. for the

  1268. glory of

  1269. Jesus and

  1270. not for

  1271. our own

  1272. glory.

  1273. And so

  1274. we pray

  1275. that you

  1276. would help
