  1. Now, Sarah's going to come and read for us.

  2. The text is in the Gospel of Matthew.

  3. We're back in Matthew chapter 12, verse 15.

    Matthew 12:15

  4. You'll find it on page 977.

  5. If you're using a church Bible, thank you, Sarah.

  6. So, this is just after the Pharisees are plotting how they might kill Jesus.

  7. Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place.

  8. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.

  9. He warned them not to tell others about him.

  10. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah.

  11. Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love in whom I delight.

  12. I will put my spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

  13. He will not quarrel or cry out.

  14. No one will hear his voice in the streets.

  15. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out.

  16. Till he has brought justice to victory.

  17. In his name, the nations will put their hope.

  18. Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute,

  19. and Jesus healed him so that he could both talk and see.

  20. The people were astonished and said,

  21. Could this be the son of David?

  22. But when the Pharisees heard this, they said,

  23. It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.

  24. Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them,

  25. Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined,

  26. and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

  27. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself.

  28. How then can his kingdom stand?

  29. And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out?

  30. So then, they will be your judges.

  31. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons,

  32. then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  33. Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions

  34. unless he first ties up the strong man?

  35. Then he can plunder his house.

  36. Whoever is not with me is against me,

  37. and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  38. And so I tell you,

  39. Every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven,

  40. but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

  41. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven,

  42. but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven,

  43. either in this age or in the age to come.

  44. So we're back in Matthew 12, page 977,

  45. looking at that chapter.

  46. And we're really thinking about the danger of disregarding Jesus this evening.

  47. But maybe we can begin picturing Matthew, the gospel writer.

  48. So these events have taken place,

  49. and about 30 years or so later,

  50. Matthew sits down to pen his account of the life of Jesus.

  51. So he has his pen in one hand,

  52. he has his Old Testament scroll perhaps in the other.

  53. He's looking back,

  54. led by the Spirit on the events and the teaching of the life of Jesus.

  55. But he's also very aware of different reactions to Jesus.

  56. Matthew grew up at a time,

  57. and Jesus grew up at a time when there was a very enthusiastic movement

  58. among the Jews asking the question,

  59. when will the Lord return as King as He promised?

  60. What will it be like?

  61. How will He come?

  62. And what will change?

  63. And of course, Matthew, because he knows Jesus,

  64. he knows the answer.

  65. He knows that God has come in His Son, the Lord Jesus.

  66. He is the promised King.

  67. And so we hear that, for example, in Matthew chapter 12, verse 28.

    Matthew 12:28

  68. He remembers Jesus' words as he says,

  69. if it's by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons,

  70. then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  71. And as Matthew is aware that Jesus is the King,

  72. and he's looking into his Bible,

  73. he's asking himself,

  74. what Bible passage sums up Jesus' life and ministry?

  75. And the Spirit leads him to Isaiah chapter 42.

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  76. So we've got that lengthy quotation

  77. from one of the servant songs of Isaiah.

  78. And this is one thing that I want to remind us,

  79. to encourage us this evening,

  80. that what you and I need,

  81. whether we're Christians or not Christians,

  82. we need to see Jesus.

  83. And how do we see Jesus?

  84. We meet Him in His Word.

  85. And Matthew understands that,

  86. so he reads the Old Testament,

  87. and he sees Jesus.

  88. His friend, His Savior, His King.

  89. And he understands that God has fulfilled His promise,

  90. the servant, the Lord, has come.

  91. So I don't know how everyone has come here this week.

  92. Perhaps some of us have had a very tough week.

  93. Perhaps some of us, we're struggling in our faith.

  94. Perhaps we have questions about Christianity.

  95. What we need is to ask,

  96. Lord, show me Jesus.

  97. The Jesus that Matthew knew,

  98. and He reveals to us.

  99. But again, as we think about Matthew writing his gospel,

  100. and as he looks back 30 years in the past,

  101. as he looks around his own society,

  102. there's an other influence that he's clearly aware of

  103. that's on his mind.

  104. It's the influence of the Pharisees.

  105. We thought about this a bit last week.

  106. The religious leaders of the day,

  107. who are also firmly opposed to Jesus,

  108. therefore firmly opposed to God's kingdom of grace.

  109. And the pressure from these authorities,

  110. which began on Jesus,

  111. is now impressing itself on the church.

  112. They are under pressure.

  113. And then there are the pressures from the Roman Empire.

  114. And so as Matthew writes his gospel

  115. to the first generation of Christians,

  116. he's wanting them to see from his gospel

  117. that their verdict,

  118. their response to Jesus matters.

  119. That what we're dealing with is life and death reality.

  120. And so this little text in Matthew,

  121. it reminds us what's at stake for us personally

  122. as we consider Jesus.

  123. It reminds us what's at stake for the people around us,

  124. for the people that we love

  125. when we think about Jesus and response to Him.

  126. And it also reminds us of the significance of our mission,

  127. the mission of the church,

  128. that as God's people we are called to.

  129. We proclaim Christ and His good news

  130. and we call people to response.

  131. And so our text really invites us to do two things.

  132. It invites us to consider the character of Christ

  133. and it invites us to consider the cost of rejecting Christ.

  134. And what I hope we can see is that because Jesus is God's beloved Son,

  135. because He is the servant King,

  136. to disregard Him in our lives is disaster.

  137. But let's begin focusing our attention on the character of Christ,

  138. especially here in verses 15 to 21.

  139. But just to recognize the context Sarah reminded us,

  140. it starts with verse 14,

  141. the Pharisees are plotting to kill Jesus.

  142. And then as we get to verse 15,

  143. we see Jesus is doing ministry,

  144. but then He's warning people not to tell others about Him.

  145. So we know that this is also a time

  146. when people have false expectations

  147. and misunderstandings about Jesus.

  148. So you've got Pharisees who are plotting

  149. and you've got people with false expectation.

  150. And in the middle of that, we've got Jesus

  151. and He's loving people and He's healing people

  152. and He's showing us what the kingdom of God is like,

  153. but He's also saying,

  154. be quiet.

  155. Because people need to understand who Jesus really is.

  156. And at that point, for so many,

  157. they had a false view of some kind of

  158. political revolutionary Messiah.

  159. And maybe when we think about that,

  160. it reminds us of the importance of

  161. which voice we listen to

  162. when it comes to truths about Jesus.

  163. That we don't listen to the world's opinions.

  164. We don't even settle for the faith of our parents.

  165. We don't even stop at certain truths about Jesus.

  166. We need to get to know Jesus personally.

  167. It's one of the reasons we come to church.

  168. That we would have a personal encounter

  169. with the Lord Jesus in His Word.

  170. It's one of the great privileges that we have

  171. whenever we open God's Word in our home,

  172. individually or as families.

  173. We get to encounter Jesus to hear Him speak.

  174. And I think it's really important to remember that

  175. and to ask ourselves,

  176. are we enjoying time with Jesus day by day?

  177. And to help us, Matthew highlights four things

  178. that we can know about Jesus,

  179. Matthew's friend and Matthew's king and Matthew's savior.

  180. And here's the first thing for us to remember

  181. as we think about the character of Christ.

  182. First, that Jesus is God's beloved son.

  183. Look at verse 18.

  184. And this is from the beginning of Isaiah 42.

  185. Here is my servant whom I have chosen,

  186. the one I love in whom I delight.

  187. That's God's verdict on Jesus.

  188. And you know, Matthew has heard personally

  189. God's verdict on Jesus.

  190. Because remember, Matthew was there

  191. when Jesus was baptized.

  192. And when Jesus came out of the water

  193. and the spirit came down

  194. and the voice from heaven,

  195. this is my son and I love him.

  196. And Matthew was also a friend of James and Peter and John.

  197. And so after Jesus has risen from the dead,

  198. they get told about the transfiguration,

  199. that point up the mountain

  200. where Jesus shone with the glory of God.

  201. And as Jesus is shining with the glory of God,

  202. there's the voice from heaven.

  203. There's the father.

  204. This is my son.

  205. I love him.

  206. Listen to him.

  207. And then Matthew, as he thinks about that,

  208. he turns to Isaiah 42.

  209. And it captures the reality that he's come to know

  210. that God the Father has joy in God the Son.

  211. That as God the Father looks upon Jesus' life on this earth,

  212. he is well pleased.

  213. He is well pleased with Jesus' perfect obedience

  214. at all stages in his life.

  215. When he is 12 years old and he says to his anxious parents,

  216. I must be in my father's house.

  217. And we know that Jesus lived his life

  218. being about his father's business.

  219. We know that the obedience of Jesus

  220. led him always to resist temptation,

  221. intense temptation that would only grow more intense

  222. because he never caved in.

  223. The father has joy in Jesus

  224. because of his perfect love.

  225. We've been thinking about the perfect love of Jesus

  226. when we heard him in the last chapter,

  227. chapter 11, verse 28,

  228. inviting people to find the rest of God,

  229. to find God's rest in knowing Jesus as Savior.

  230. We see Jesus displaying the perfect love of God the Father

  231. when he brings healing as he does here.

  232. When he shows compassion on the crowds,

  233. go back to chapter 9, verse 36,

  234. it's Jesus' compassion on helpless people

  235. who are looking for God,

  236. but they don't know that Jesus is God's King

  237. that leads him to send the disciples on mission.

  238. And the father is pleased with the love

  239. and the compassion of his son, Jesus.

  240. And so he tells his story.

  241. At the same time that there are some,

  242. the Pharisees, who want to destroy Jesus,

  243. and there's many that are captured

  244. as willing to dismiss Jesus

  245. as an irrelevance,

  246. he tells us God the Father,

  247. he delights in Jesus,

  248. his beloved son.

  249. And I think the encouragement for us as Christians

  250. is the invitation that we have

  251. to get into the gospels

  252. to get to know Jesus better,

  253. that we would share the father's delight

  254. in Jesus, the son,

  255. that we would learn to call precious

  256. what God calls precious.

  257. He delights in Jesus

  258. and we're invited to do the same.

  259. So Jesus is God's beloved son.

  260. We also are told here

  261. that Jesus is God's suffering servant.

  262. It's there in verse 18.

  263. Here is my servant whom I have chosen,

  264. the one I love in whom I delight.

  265. And the servant songs in the book of Isaiah

  266. become a great hope

  267. that one day a Messiah will come,

  268. that redemption and rescue

  269. and deliverance and peace will come.

  270. And so the question that's being asked

  271. in the first century in Jerusalem and beyond

  272. is what will it look like

  273. when God comes and acts as he's promised?

  274. What will this rescue be like?

  275. What will it look like

  276. when God's king comes to establish his kingdom,

  277. to bless the nations as he's promised?

  278. Well, what answer does Matthew offer?

  279. What answer do the gospels offer

  280. as they present us Jesus?

  281. It looks like a humble servant

  282. who is ready and willing to heal the despised,

  283. to care for those society has cast aside,

  284. to welcome the excluded,

  285. and to demonstrate mercy.

  286. And if we know our Bibles

  287. and we know our gospels,

  288. our minds will perhaps go to some of those stories

  289. where Jesus extends the mercy and grace of God.

  290. Perhaps we think of his encounter

  291. with the woman at the well,

  292. that notorious sinner,

  293. and he shares deep theology,

  294. but ultimately he identifies himself

  295. as the promised one,

  296. the source of living water.

  297. Or perhaps we think about

  298. how Jesus showed mercy to people

  299. from the wrong places.

  300. Earlier in this gospel,

  301. a centurion's faith is honored.

  302. I've not met faith like this anywhere in Israel.

  303. There'll be people who'll come from

  304. north and south and east and west

  305. and they'll be part of the kingdom.

  306. Well, those who had the Old Testament,

  307. those who should have seen the Messiah,

  308. they're going to miss out.

  309. Jesus showed mercy to people

  310. with the wrong look,

  311. people with leprosy,

  312. people with withered hands.

  313. When the king comes,

  314. when the servant comes,

  315. it looks like a figure

  316. riding into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  317. ruling in humility

  318. for humble people.

  319. It looks like a king

  320. come to establish God's kingdom

  321. by way of sacrifice

  322. and self-giving

  323. and a death on the cross.

  324. And it looks like what we read about

  325. in verses 19 and 20.

  326. This servant, this one,

  327. this spirit-filled one,

  328. he will not quarrel or cry out.

  329. No one will hear his voice in the streets.

  330. A bruised reed he will not break

  331. and a smoldering wick he'll not snuff out

  332. till he's brought justice through to victory.

  333. It looks like gentleness

  334. and compassion.

  335. It looks like a Messiah

  336. who is so patient with weak faith,

  337. who is so patient with Matthew

  338. and the other disciples

  339. in all of their misunderstanding.

  340. It looks like a Savior

  341. who will not despise

  342. fragile faith,

  343. but who honors and protects

  344. all of his own.

  345. I have a friend who

  346. used to work for,

  347. in Midlothian,

  348. the mobile library service.

  349. And on day one of his work,

  350. he thought it was the only day of his work

  351. because on day one,

  352. he crashed the van.

  353. And so he had that fear all day long.

  354. What's going to happen

  355. when I get back to the depot

  356. and I have to tell my boss

  357. what's happened?

  358. So at the end of the day,

  359. he went in with great fear

  360. and trepidation,

  361. expecting the worst,

  362. only to be told,

  363. it's no problem,

  364. these things happen.

  365. Now imagine the relief

  366. to be met with gentleness

  367. and mercy.

  368. It's exactly what we find

  369. from the heart of Jesus.

  370. And it's the encouragement

  371. that we've been hearing from Jesus.

  372. It's that encouragement

  373. of chapter 11, verse 28.

  374. Come to me,

  375. all you who are weary and burdened,

  376. and I will give you rest.

  377. We're invited to remember

  378. the heart of Jesus.

  379. Remember he described his heart

  380. in verse 29 of chapter 11.

  381. I am gentle and humble.

  382. in heart.

  383. And the most common emotion

  384. that Jesus shows in the Gospels

  385. is the compassion of God.

  386. And that's so important

  387. for us to remember

  388. as the people of God

  389. because I think it's really easy

  390. for us to despise ourselves

  391. when we fail and fall short.

  392. It's really easy

  393. to beat ourselves up,

  394. never mind looking outside at others.

  395. But our Jesus,

  396. he is gentle with us,

  397. and he doesn't despise weak faith.

  398. And what we discover wonderfully

  399. is that our sin

  400. and our suffering,

  401. it actually draws out

  402. more of Jesus' heart to us

  403. to meet our needs.

  404. So he is the beloved son

  405. and he is the suffering servant.

  406. And here in Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  407. we also discover

  408. more of the character of Christ

  409. as he is announced

  410. to be the light

  411. to the nations.

  412. That's part of Isaiah's phrase

  413. about this coming servant.

  414. Now Matthew doesn't quote

  415. as far as verse 6

  416. of chapter 42,

  417. but if he did,

  418. that's what we would hear.

  419. If he'd quoted from Isaiah chapter 49

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  420. about the servant,

  421. we would hear

  422. that it wasn't enough

  423. just for this servant

  424. to come and be a light

  425. for the Jews.

  426. He had to be a light

  427. to the Gentiles also.

  428. So there is something

  429. in the character

  430. of this one,

  431. this Jesus,

  432. that represents good news

  433. for all peoples.

  434. And here we have it

  435. at the end of verse 18.

  436. This spirit-filled one,

  437. he will proclaim justice

  438. to the nations.

  439. And in verse 21,

  440. we see how wide

  441. the welcome is.

  442. In his name,

  443. the nations

  444. will put their hope.

  445. So when God sends his king

  446. to establish his kingdom,

  447. the promise reaches beyond

  448. just that small portion

  449. of Israel.

  450. It extends

  451. to all the nations

  452. of the earth.

  453. The call of Jesus,

  454. the good shepherd.

  455. Remember when he said,

  456. I have sheep

  457. that are not

  458. in this sheepfold,

  459. but I must call them

  460. and they must come in too

  461. so that there be

  462. one flock

  463. and one shepherd.

  464. Or if you were here

  465. this morning

  466. and we were in

  467. the story of Abraham,

  468. Abraham gets that promise

  469. that someone

  470. from his family line

  471. will be a source

  472. of blessing

  473. to all the nations.

  474. It all flows

  475. from Jesus,

  476. the one who declares

  477. himself to be

  478. the light

  479. of the world.

  480. And what we discover

  481. about Jesus

  482. is someone

  483. who,

  484. as it were,

  485. rolls out

  486. the welcome mat.

  487. Not just for

  488. the elite

  489. or not just for

  490. certain types

  491. of people

  492. who might make

  493. the cut

  494. the way,

  495. you know,

  496. a Hollywood red carpet

  497. event works.

  498. He extends

  499. a welcome

  500. and offers

  501. hope to

  502. all.

  503. It's often said

  504. that Matthew

  505. is the most Jewish

  506. of all the gospel

  507. writers,

  508. but we still have

  509. significant hints

  510. within Matthew's

  511. gospel that he

  512. understands the good

  513. news of Jesus

  514. is universal.

  515. So the first

  516. worshippers,

  517. and we think about

  518. it most Christmases,

  519. the first worshippers

  520. of Jesus we find

  521. in Matthew's gospel,

  522. it's the Magi

  523. from the east.

  524. We spoke about

  525. the centurion's

  526. faith,

  527. the one who was

  528. honoured

  529. when he said

  530. to Jesus,

  531. Jesus you don't

  532. even need to

  533. come to my house

  534. to heal my servant,

  535. just say the word

  536. and he'll be healed

  537. and his faith

  538. is honoured.

  539. Or we think about

  540. Jesus crossing

  541. the sea

  542. to heal

  543. the demon

  544. possessed.

  545. Matthew's gospel

  546. tells us that

  547. Jesus is for

  548. all nations

  549. and all people

  550. and of course

  551. think about

  552. when Matthew

  553. is writing,

  554. he's writing now

  555. maybe in the mid-60s

  556. by which point

  557. the spirit

  558. has come

  559. first on the

  560. apostles

  561. and then on the

  562. church

  563. and the church

  564. has been sent

  565. out on that

  566. great commission

  567. and the church

  568. is both announcing

  569. and showing

  570. the saving reign

  571. of Jesus

  572. that faith in Jesus

  573. transforms lives

  574. and builds

  575. a new community

  576. a new society

  577. and that movement

  578. is going

  579. as Jesus

  580. said it would

  581. from Jerusalem

  582. to Judea

  583. to Samaria

  584. and to the ends

  585. of the earth.

  586. Why is this

  587. good news?

  588. Well it's good

  589. news for us

  590. personally

  591. if we've received

  592. this message

  593. because it reminds

  594. us just how

  595. wide and inclusive

  596. the gospel message

  597. is.

  598. Believe in the

  599. Lord Jesus

  600. and you will

  601. be saved.

  602. But it's also

  603. hugely important

  604. for our mission

  605. that this is saying

  606. to us we can

  607. go anywhere

  608. to anyone

  609. from any place

  610. and say to them

  611. Christ Jesus

  612. has died

  613. for you.

  614. Christ Jesus

  615. is the saviour

  616. that you need

  617. regardless of

  618. a background

  619. regardless of

  620. language or culture.

  621. And of course

  622. it's realities

  623. like these as well

  624. that matter

  625. for global mission.

  626. Jesus has now

  627. returned to heaven

  628. but he's

  629. continuing to do

  630. his work.

  631. As he sends

  632. the spirit

  633. the spirit

  634. fills his people

  635. the spirit

  636. fills the church

  637. and the church

  638. proclaims Christ.

  639. And so

  640. John Piper

  641. is somebody

  642. who writes

  643. a lot about

  644. mission

  645. and he would

  646. say that

  647. every Christian

  648. is called

  649. to either

  650. go on

  651. mission

  652. or to

  653. pray

  654. and to

  655. support

  656. mission

  657. or being

  658. disobedient.

  659. And it's

  660. the reality

  661. of Jesus

  662. being light

  663. to all the

  664. nations

  665. that makes

  666. that so.

  667. And it also

  668. matters then

  669. for our

  670. gospel welcome.

  671. It's one of

  672. the wonderful

  673. things about

  674. this time of

  675. year isn't it?

  676. When the whole

  677. nation

  678. seem to be

  679. gathering in

  680. Edinburgh

  681. it should be

  682. the case

  683. that anybody

  684. should be

  685. able to walk

  686. in through

  687. those doors

  688. and feel

  689. welcome.

  690. to feel

  691. the welcome

  692. to belong

  693. before they

  694. believe.

  695. And there

  696. should be

  697. something in

  698. the loving

  699. welcome of

  700. the church

  701. that should

  702. help someone

  703. to believe.

  704. To make

  705. the message

  706. of the gospel

  707. seem more

  708. credible.

  709. Because someone

  710. should come

  711. into a church

  712. and see

  713. here's a group

  714. of people

  715. and they look

  716. very different

  717. and they seem

  718. to come from

  719. different places

  720. and they're from

  721. different ages

  722. and stages

  723. but they love

  724. one another

  725. and they're

  726. kind to each

  727. other

  728. and they

  729. practice

  730. generosity

  731. together

  732. and so we're

  733. breaking down

  734. some barriers

  735. perhaps

  736. so that people

  737. might be more

  738. open to

  739. our message.

  740. Because we

  741. remember that

  742. every local

  743. church has a

  744. mission.

  745. We have a

  746. mission here

  747. in Beclood.

  748. Galashiels

  749. has a mission

  750. to make

  751. Jesus known,

  752. to make

  753. his message

  754. intelligible

  755. and credible

  756. and desirable

  757. for the

  758. communities

  759. in which

  760. God has

  761. placed us.

  762. So Matthew

  763. is reminding

  764. us,

  765. Jesus is

  766. the beloved

  767. son,

  768. he is

  769. the servant,

  770. he is

  771. the light

  772. to the

  773. nations

  774. and he's

  775. also

  776. the king

  777. of grace.

  778. Many of

  779. Matthew's

  780. contemporaries

  781. as we said,

  782. they had a

  783. particular

  784. expectation

  785. for what

  786. a Messiah

  787. would be

  788. like.

  789. They're

  790. expecting

  791. political

  792. hero,

  793. they're

  794. expecting

  795. overthrow,

  796. they're

  797. expecting

  798. the

  799. establishment

  800. of a

  801. new

  802. order.

  803. And perhaps

  804. it's a

  805. natural

  806. expectation

  807. that we

  808. have.

  809. Often

  810. it's the

  811. way the

  812. world

  813. works.

  814. If you

  815. have a

  816. powerful

  817. role,

  818. then you

  819. may well

  820. be tempted

  821. to operate

  822. by force

  823. of will

  824. or even

  825. the force

  826. of arms.

  827. Look with

  828. me at

  829. verses 22

  830. and 23

  831. and see

  832. just how

  833. different

  834. Jesus is.

  835. Then they

  836. brought

  837. Jesus,

  838. a demon

  839. possessed

  840. man who

  841. was blind

  842. and mute

  843. and Jesus

  844. healed him

  845. so that he

  846. could both

  847. talk and

  848. see.

  849. All the

  850. people were

  851. astonished and

  852. said,

  853. could this

  854. be the

  855. son of

  856. David?

  857. Jesus is a

  858. remarkably

  859. powerful figure

  860. doing remarkable

  861. things and he

  862. has this

  863. powerful,

  864. remarkable title.

  865. Son of

  866. David was the

  867. great hope that

  868. in the future

  869. someone would

  870. come and

  871. he'd be

  872. God's

  873. king,

  874. that God

  875. would rule

  876. through his

  877. chosen king

  878. and people

  879. are beginning

  880. to ask,

  881. is it

  882. Jesus?

  883. But just

  884. recognize,

  885. how does

  886. Jesus use

  887. his power?

  888. How does

  889. he use

  890. this role

  891. which is

  892. his role?

  893. Well,

  894. he uses it

  895. to extend

  896. God's

  897. grave.

  898. He uses

  899. it to

  900. show

  901. healing

  902. and

  903. deliverance.

  904. He will

  905. use it

  906. to bring

  907. forgiveness

  908. and to

  909. display

  910. mercy

  911. and to

  912. give people

  913. hope.

  914. And because

  915. this is

  916. true,

  917. because Jesus

  918. is both

  919. wonderfully

  920. powerful

  921. and at the

  922. same time

  923. wonderfully

  924. loving,

  925. you and I

  926. can trust

  927. him.

  928. Here is

  929. one power

  930. figure who

  931. will never

  932. exploit or

  933. abuse his

  934. role or

  935. his people.

  936. And so

  937. we can

  938. submit to

  939. him knowing

  940. it's for

  941. our good.

  942. So we

  943. can gladly

  944. seek his

  945. kingdom.

  946. So Matthew

  947. has been

  948. showing us

  949. the character

  950. of Christ

  951. to help us

  952. to see

  953. this is why

  954. it would be

  955. so dangerous

  956. to disregard

  957. and ignore

  958. Jesus,

  959. simply because

  960. he is so

  961. good,

  962. because he

  963. is so

  964. wonderful

  965. and loving

  966. and to

  967. miss out

  968. on this

  969. one would

  970. be to

  971. miss out

  972. on so

  973. much.

  974. But he

  975. gives a

  976. second

  977. answer

  978. about the

  979. danger of

  980. disregarding

  981. Jesus,

  982. and now

  983. the tone

  984. changes

  985. as he

  986. focuses on

  987. the cost

  988. of rejecting

  989. Christ,

  990. from verse

  991. 24 onwards.

  992. I suspect

  993. we all have

  994. this kind

  995. of person

  996. in our

  997. lives,

  998. the kind

  999. of person

  1000. that we

  1001. would say

  1002. of them,

  1003. well they

  1004. wouldn't

  1005. hurt a

  1006. fly,

  1007. or nobody

  1008. has a

  1009. bad word

  1010. to say

  1011. about them,

  1012. they're always

  1013. ready to

  1014. help

  1015. others.

  1016. The kind

  1017. of person

  1018. you want

  1019. to be

  1020. with,

  1021. perhaps the

  1022. kind of

  1023. person you

  1024. want to

  1025. be when

  1026. you grow

  1027. up.

  1028. So imagine

  1029. that's your

  1030. friend,

  1031. and you know

  1032. so many

  1033. wonderful things

  1034. about him,

  1035. and you meet

  1036. someone else,

  1037. and at the

  1038. very mention

  1039. of their

  1040. name,

  1041. you can

  1042. see a

  1043. person's

  1044. blood boil

  1045. And their

  1046. fists

  1047. clench,

  1048. and what

  1049. they speak

  1050. of that

  1051. person is

  1052. hate and

  1053. anger.

  1054. We'd be

  1055. shocked,

  1056. wouldn't we?

  1057. confused.

  1058. Matthew has

  1059. been introducing

  1060. Jesus to

  1061. us,

  1062. the real

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. the personal

  1065. Jesus,

  1066. full of

  1067. love and

  1068. compassion,

  1069. doing good

  1070. and bringing

  1071. grace,

  1072. but the

  1073. Pharisees,

  1074. verse 14,

  1075. plotting how

  1076. they may

  1077. kill Jesus,

  1078. verse 22,

  1079. what's their

  1080. verdict on

  1081. Jesus?

  1082. It's only

  1083. by Beelzebul,

  1084. the prince of

  1085. demons,

  1086. that this

  1087. fellow drives

  1088. out demons.

  1089. What's going

  1090. on here?

  1091. As J.C.

  1092. Ryle puts it,

  1093. it's the

  1094. human heart

  1095. showing its

  1096. true colors

  1097. in rejecting

  1098. God and

  1099. his chosen

  1100. servant.

  1101. And this

  1102. little section

  1103. reminds us

  1104. that to

  1105. disregard

  1106. Jesus has

  1107. eternal

  1108. consequences.

  1109. And I

  1110. think it's

  1111. important for

  1112. us to

  1113. remember that,

  1114. that we

  1115. would guard

  1116. our own

  1117. hearts,

  1118. that if

  1119. we're

  1120. Christians,

  1121. we'd want

  1122. to walk

  1123. closely with

  1124. Jesus,

  1125. and we'd

  1126. want to pray

  1127. for others

  1128. knowing this

  1129. to be true.

  1130. So as we

  1131. think very

  1132. briefly about

  1133. Jesus' dialogue

  1134. with the

  1135. Pharisees,

  1136. notice again,

  1137. first of all,

  1138. that the

  1139. identity question

  1140. comes up.

  1141. Verses 25 to

  1142. 29, the

  1143. question is

  1144. really, well,

  1145. whose kingdom

  1146. is Jesus

  1147. in?

  1148. Because they

  1149. have said

  1150. very clearly,

  1151. well, we

  1152. think Jesus

  1153. is working

  1154. and siding

  1155. with Satan.

  1156. And so Jesus

  1157. takes the time

  1158. to expose

  1159. their faulty

  1160. logic,

  1161. that a house

  1162. divided against

  1163. itself can't

  1164. stand,

  1165. that makes

  1166. no sense.

  1167. He makes

  1168. plain that

  1169. Jesus is

  1170. working against

  1171. the kingdom

  1172. of darkness,

  1173. he's standing

  1174. against Satan,

  1175. he is the

  1176. strong man

  1177. who ties up

  1178. Satan so

  1179. that he can

  1180. bring people

  1181. from that

  1182. kingdom of

  1183. darkness

  1184. into the

  1185. kingdom of

  1186. God.

  1187. And so to

  1188. get that

  1189. wrong is

  1190. hugely

  1191. important.

  1192. And Jesus

  1193. says as

  1194. much very

  1195. directly in

  1196. verse 30

  1197. when he

  1198. says,

  1199. whoever is

  1200. not with

  1201. me is

  1202. against

  1203. me,

  1204. and whoever

  1205. does not

  1206. gather with

  1207. me scatters.

  1208. Inviting

  1209. everyone to

  1210. consider,

  1211. well, whose

  1212. side are we

  1213. on?

  1214. To recognize

  1215. that no one

  1216. is a spiritual

  1217. Switzerland,

  1218. we're either

  1219. for or we're

  1220. against Jesus.

  1221. Or as he

  1222. puts it,

  1223. we're either

  1224. gathering people

  1225. into the

  1226. kingdom of

  1227. God as we

  1228. are gathered

  1229. ourselves,

  1230. or we're

  1231. scattering.

  1232. And so

  1233. Jesus'

  1234. warning is

  1235. clear.

  1236. We must

  1237. take him

  1238. and his

  1239. claims

  1240. seriously.

  1241. We must

  1242. examine what

  1243. the Bible

  1244. says for

  1245. our verdict,

  1246. and we

  1247. must follow

  1248. where the

  1249. evidence leads,

  1250. and we

  1251. must nail

  1252. our colors

  1253. to the

  1254. mast as

  1255. we respond

  1256. with faith.

  1257. But he

  1258. doesn't just

  1259. stop at the

  1260. identity

  1261. question,

  1262. he also

  1263. moves on

  1264. to the

  1265. destiny

  1266. question.

  1267. There's a

  1268. very sobering

  1269. reality,

  1270. isn't there,

  1271. in verses

  1272. 31 and

  1273. 32,

  1274. when Jesus

  1275. makes plain

  1276. that there

  1277. is a sin

  1278. that won't

  1279. be forgiven,

  1280. there's a

  1281. heart attitude

  1282. towards Jesus

  1283. that leads

  1284. to eternal

  1285. punishment.

  1286. Verse 31,

  1287. so I tell

  1288. you,

  1289. every kind

  1290. of sin

  1291. and slander

  1292. can be

  1293. forgiven,

  1294. but blasphemy

  1295. against the

  1296. Spirit will

  1297. not be

  1298. forgiven.

  1299. Anyone who

  1300. speaks a

  1301. word against

  1302. the Son

  1303. of Man

  1304. will be

  1305. forgiven,

  1306. but anyone

  1307. who speaks

  1308. against the

  1309. Holy Spirit

  1310. will not be

  1311. forgiven,

  1312. either in

  1313. this age

  1314. or in

  1315. the age

  1316. to come.

  1317. It's a

  1318. kind of

  1319. saying of

  1320. Jesus we

  1321. need to

  1322. be very

  1323. careful with.

  1324. We need

  1325. to be

  1326. careful about

  1327. tender

  1328. consciences.

  1329. first of

  1330. all,

  1331. what is

  1332. Jesus

  1333. not

  1334. saying?

  1335. He's not

  1336. saying if

  1337. we ever

  1338. say a

  1339. bad word

  1340. about

  1341. Jesus,

  1342. then we

  1343. can't

  1344. be

  1345. forgiven.

  1346. We only

  1347. need to

  1348. look as

  1349. far as

  1350. Peter,

  1351. the

  1352. disciple,

  1353. to see

  1354. that.

  1355. Remember

  1356. Peter calling

  1357. down

  1358. curses on

  1359. himself.

  1360. I don't

  1361. know that

  1362. man.

  1363. So it's

  1364. not that.

  1365. Nor is

  1366. it all

  1367. unbelief and

  1368. opposition to

  1369. Jesus.

  1370. Think about

  1371. Paul,

  1372. the great

  1373. apostle.

  1374. Before Jesus

  1375. met him on

  1376. the Damascus

  1377. road, he

  1378. hated and

  1379. despised Jesus

  1380. and the

  1381. church.

  1382. And later he

  1383. would look

  1384. back and say,

  1385. I'm the

  1386. chief of

  1387. sinners.

  1388. But I

  1389. acted in

  1390. ignorance.

  1391. So it's

  1392. not that

  1393. either.

  1394. Maybe to

  1395. begin to

  1396. get to what

  1397. he's talking

  1398. about, think

  1399. about what

  1400. the Pharisees

  1401. are doing.

  1402. So here

  1403. they are,

  1404. they have

  1405. front row

  1406. seats to

  1407. the life and

  1408. ministry of

  1409. Jesus.

  1410. They hear

  1411. his teaching,

  1412. they see

  1413. his miracles,

  1414. they see

  1415. his character,

  1416. and they see

  1417. the Spirit

  1418. working in

  1419. and through

  1420. Jesus.

  1421. And we're

  1422. told that the

  1423. Father has

  1424. pleasure in

  1425. Jesus and

  1426. he comes

  1427. according to

  1428. the Father's

  1429. plan and

  1430. their verdict

  1431. is Jesus

  1432. is satanic.

  1433. Jesus is

  1434. part of the

  1435. devil's kingdom.

  1436. And so

  1437. they continue

  1438. this public

  1439. persistent

  1440. attack.

  1441. They are

  1442. turned against

  1443. Jesus and

  1444. they're turning

  1445. others against

  1446. Jesus.

  1447. Remember,

  1448. even as

  1449. Jesus is

  1450. being put

  1451. on trial,

  1452. they're stirring

  1453. up the crowd.

  1454. Away with

  1455. this man,

  1456. crucify him.

  1457. And so

  1458. this is

  1459. public

  1460. determination

  1461. to reject

  1462. what they

  1463. see,

  1464. to attribute

  1465. evil to

  1466. what is

  1467. good,

  1468. to deny

  1469. the truth

  1470. of the

  1471. gospel.

  1472. But there

  1473. is within

  1474. this a

  1475. warning,

  1476. isn't there,

  1477. that to

  1478. say no

  1479. to what

  1480. we're told

  1481. of Jesus

  1482. and the

  1483. gospel,

  1484. if we

  1485. never turn

  1486. away from

  1487. sin to

  1488. trust in

  1489. him,

  1490. if we

  1491. never change,

  1492. and follow,

  1493. then there

  1494. can be

  1495. no

  1496. forgiveness.

  1497. And so

  1498. if we're

  1499. here and

  1500. we're not

  1501. yet a

  1502. Christian,

  1503. that's

  1504. something that

  1505. we must

  1506. do,

  1507. we must

  1508. humble

  1509. ourselves

  1510. to turn

  1511. to trust

  1512. in Jesus

  1513. and to

  1514. do it

  1515. as a

  1516. matter

  1517. of

  1518. urgency.

  1519. So

  1520. Matthew

  1521. writes

  1522. to warn

  1523. us by

  1524. looking at

  1525. the Pharisees

  1526. here,

  1527. that

  1528. disregarding

  1529. Jesus

  1530. is

  1531. dangerous

  1532. because

  1533. of who

  1534. Jesus

  1535. is,

  1536. because

  1537. of

  1538. what

  1539. we

  1540. would

  1541. miss,

  1542. because

  1543. he

  1544. is

  1545. so

  1546. precious,

  1547. he

  1548. is

  1549. so

  1550. good,

  1551. to

  1552. miss

  1553. him

  1554. would

  1555. be

  1556. to

  1557. miss

  1558. everything.

  1559. But then

  1560. there's also

  1561. the other

  1562. side,

  1563. that it's

  1564. dangerous

  1565. to disregard

  1566. Jesus

  1567. because

  1568. of the

  1569. eternal

  1570. cost

  1571. of ignoring

  1572. him and

  1573. his claims.

  1574. We thought

  1575. this morning

  1576. about the

  1577. Titanic.

  1578. On the

  1579. night that

  1580. Titanic

  1581. sank,

  1582. there were

  1583. six

  1584. iceberg

  1585. warnings

  1586. that came

  1587. in.

  1588. Now some

  1589. of them

  1590. were missed,

  1591. others were

  1592. simply ignored,

  1593. and we know

  1594. how that

  1595. finished.

  1596. And so we

  1597. recognize that

  1598. the importance

  1599. of not ignoring

  1600. Jesus,

  1601. of not ignoring

  1602. his warnings,

  1603. of not ignoring

  1604. his promise

  1605. of salvation,

  1606. rather to come

  1607. to find life

  1608. and joy

  1609. and rest

  1610. in him.

  1611. Let's pray

  1612. together.

  1613. Lord God,

  1614. we thank

  1615. you for the

  1616. way Matthew

  1617. could write

  1618. of his

  1619. friend,

  1620. of his

  1621. savior,

  1622. of his

  1623. king,

  1624. to look

  1625. through the

  1626. pages of

  1627. the Bible

  1628. and to see

  1629. Jesus fulfilling

  1630. that great

  1631. prophecy of

  1632. Isaiah 42.

  1633. We thank

  1634. you for

  1635. sending Jesus

  1636. to be such

  1637. a humble,

  1638. suffering

  1639. servant,

  1640. to be willing

  1641. to wash

  1642. his disciples'

  1643. feet,

  1644. to be willing

  1645. to wash

  1646. us clean

  1647. of our

  1648. sin,

  1649. by his

  1650. death

  1651. on the

  1652. cross.

  1653. We thank

  1654. you that

  1655. he is a

  1656. king,

  1657. but he

  1658. is a

  1659. king marked

  1660. by grace.

  1661. We thank

  1662. you for

  1663. how tender

  1664. and gentle

  1665. he is

  1666. with us

  1667. when our

  1668. faith is

  1669. weak.

  1670. We thank

  1671. you that

  1672. he is the

  1673. one who

  1674. will hold

  1675. us fast.

  1676. We thank

  1677. you for

  1678. the good

  1679. news that

  1680. Jesus isn't

  1681. just for

  1682. some people,

  1683. but for

  1684. all people,

  1685. so we can

  1686. have confidence

  1687. in proclaiming

  1688. Christ as

  1689. Lord.

  1690. And we

  1691. pray too

  1692. that you

  1693. would remind

  1694. us how

  1695. important it

  1696. is,

  1697. how eternally

  1698. important it

  1699. is to get

  1700. our response

  1701. to Jesus

  1702. right.

  1703. Help us and

  1704. teach us,

  1705. we ask in

  1706. Jesus' name.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.
