  1. And if you will turn with me to Genesis chapter 12 on page number 13.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  2. ! We've been singing about God making a promise to Abraham.

  3. ! A promise that we'd be renewed through the generations.

  4. A promise that will be fulfilled in Jesus.

  5. But as we come to Genesis 12, we're going to look at the first nine verses,

  6. and we're going to ask ourselves from this text,

  7. who is God?

  8. So let's hear God speak.

  9. The Lord had said to Abraham,

  10. Go from your country, your people, and your father's household to the land I will show you.

  11. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you.

  12. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

  13. I will bless those who bless you.

  14. And whoever curses you, I will curse.

  15. And all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

  16. So Abraham went as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him.

  17. Abraham was 75 years old when he set out from Haran.

  18. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they'd accumulated,

  19. and the people they'd acquired in Haran.

  20. And they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

  21. Abraham traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem.

  22. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land.

  23. The Lord appeared to Abraham and said,

  24. To your offspring I will give this land.

  25. So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.

  26. From there he went on towards the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent,

  27. with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east.

  28. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.

  29. Then Abraham set out and continued towards the Negev.

  30. Amen.

  31. We'll leave our reading there.

  32. So we're asking the question, who is God?

  33. But let's begin thinking about friendship and also loneliness.

  34. I wonder if you can remember a time when it felt like making friends was easy.

  35. For me, I go back to my little primary school.

  36. Maybe the first new friend I met, we supported the same football team.

  37. So of course we became friends for life.

  38. In primary three, my little class of two grew to three.

  39. And boy number three, he used the same inhaler as I did.

  40. And so of course we were friends forever.

  41. Friendship is something that can be so easy at times.

  42. And it's a wonderful gift.

  43. It's been well said that friendship is the gift that halves our sorrows and doubles our joys.

  44. And that's one of the things that we hope a local church like ours is for people.

  45. A place where real friendship can be established.

  46. Because we know, don't we, friendship can be hard to come by.

  47. Even the government has recognized that.

  48. We have a task force.

  49. We are now in what's still known as a loneliness epidemic.

  50. Rising numbers of people who feel left out.

  51. Who have no meaningful social connections.

  52. Who would indicate they have a sense of intense loneliness much of the time.

  53. And that's so important because the impacts are huge.

  54. Studies are now showing the impact on our cardiovascular system.

  55. Things like the rise in diabetes.

  56. The impact on mental health.

  57. Productivity at work.

  58. All shaped by friendship or its absence and loneliness.

  59. So who is God?

  60. God is the one who speaks.

  61. And God is the one who invites us into relationship.

  62. Where we get to call God Father.

  63. Where we can have the Lord Jesus as a friend.

  64. Where we can know, because the Spirit is in us, that we are never alone.

  65. The Bible says we are made for relationships.

  66. And wonderfully, as we see throughout the Bible story,

  67. God comes to give, to establish, to restore relationship.

  68. Last week, if you were here, we were at the Tower of Babel.

  69. And here is this moment where the world had walked away from God.

  70. And they were literally building a life apart from God.

  71. And the outcome was confusion and scattering.

  72. And that could have been the end of the story.

  73. But what we just read is that this week, God comes calling.

  74. God comes seeking.

  75. Abraham.

  76. An old man.

  77. An idol worshipper.

  78. And he changes Abraham's life by establishing relationship.

  79. That got me thinking this week.

  80. About prayer.

  81. If you're a Christian, you'll have had a relationship with prayer through the years.

  82. But this week, I was thinking, what an amazing privilege.

  83. You know, you're facing real challenges.

  84. And we get to pray.

  85. When something good comes into our life,

  86. and we can say thank you to God, knowing that kindness came from Him.

  87. I found myself asking God for wisdom.

  88. I found myself taking the needs of other people to God this week.

  89. I enjoyed going for a walk in the sunshine,

  90. and talking with Him at the same time.

  91. And I think one of the goals I have for today is basic and fundamental.

  92. If we are Christians,

  93. to remind ourselves that God wants us to enjoy our life with Him.

  94. To enjoy a living relationship with God.

  95. And if you're not a Christian,

  96. I want to show you what God offers to you.

  97. The connection, the relationship, the life,

  98. actually that we were all made for.

  99. So God is the Lord who speaks,

  100. so that we might enjoy life with Him.

  101. That's where we're going this morning.

  102. So let's think, first of all, about the reality that God speaks.

  103. And recognize with me that this God is the personal God.

  104. Four times in our text, you will see the name of God,

  105. the Lord.

  106. Verse 1, all in capital letters,

  107. also there in verse 4, 7, and 8.

  108. This is not a title.

  109. This is God's own name.

  110. This reminds us, fundamentally, God is personal.

  111. He is not a force.

  112. He is not a concept or a construct.

  113. He is alive, active, and personal.

  114. In our text, we see this personal God.

  115. He makes promises.

  116. He connects with people in covenant.

  117. We will hear Him say,

  118. I will be your God,

  119. and you will be my people.

  120. And this personal God is one that we can know

  121. in His actions.

  122. The Bible is full of the actions of God.

  123. The world is full of the actions of God.

  124. God has created everything that we see,

  125. and He controls it all.

  126. He reveals Himself personally,

  127. and He personally acts to rescue people.

  128. He shows steadfast love.

  129. He shows His glory.

  130. He is full of goodness and grace,

  131. because He is personal.

  132. And this is so helpful.

  133. You and I, we don't need to guess what God is like.

  134. And we should never imagine God is distant,

  135. some kind of faraway concept.

  136. Rather, we're reminded He is the personal God

  137. who comes near so that you and I,

  138. we might know Him.

  139. And that's one of the wonderful things

  140. about the Abraham story.

  141. We see the personal God is acting everywhere.

  142. He calls Abraham.

  143. He makes promises.

  144. He intervenes when Abraham gets things wrong.

  145. He directs Abraham's journeys.

  146. He reveals His actions in advance to Abraham.

  147. He commits to a covenant relationship,

  148. and He even gives him a son.

  149. He is personal.

  150. And now,

  151. this same God that we're reading about here,

  152. He has personally revealed Himself

  153. in an even more striking way

  154. in His Son,

  155. the Lord Jesus.

  156. John's Gospel tells us,

  157. He is the Word who became flesh

  158. and made His dwelling among us,

  159. and we have seen His glory.

  160. To see Jesus in the Gospel

  161. is to see God.

  162. And this Jesus,

  163. He comes personally to us.

  164. Remember how we started our service?

  165. He opens the door,

  166. inviting us to welcome Him

  167. so that we might have the joy of life with Him.

  168. He's the one who personally says,

  169. come to me and rest.

  170. and find salvation

  171. and enjoy life with God.

  172. Now, why start here?

  173. Well, again,

  174. it's because I think it's something

  175. we can forget

  176. or we can fail to enjoy.

  177. And maybe if we're not Christians,

  178. we can have a misconception

  179. about what Christianity is.

  180. Christianity is not

  181. about dull duty.

  182. And it is not about

  183. religious routine.

  184. rather,

  185. it is personal,

  186. living relationship

  187. with God

  188. through Jesus,

  189. His Son.

  190. The one who comes

  191. to walk with us

  192. through life.

  193. And so we're all invited

  194. to come

  195. and to taste and see

  196. that this personal God

  197. is good.

  198. So God is personal.

  199. Now,

  200. I also want to notice

  201. when God speaks,

  202. there is a pattern.

  203. verse 1,

  204. the Lord had said to Abraham,

  205. go from your country,

  206. your people,

  207. and your father's household

  208. to the land I will show you.

  209. Now,

  210. if I was to ask

  211. any one of you,

  212. why are you here?

  213. Why are you here in Edinburgh?

  214. There would be a range

  215. of answers.

  216. For some of us,

  217. it would be,

  218. well,

  219. education took me here.

  220. For others,

  221. work took me here.

  222. Or,

  223. this is where my family are.

  224. Or,

  225. this is the place

  226. where I've always lived.

  227. If I say,

  228. why are you here in church?

  229. Again,

  230. we probably get a range

  231. of answers.

  232. Perhaps you're here today

  233. because someone

  234. invited you here.

  235. You came with a friend.

  236. Or,

  237. your family comes

  238. and so you come.

  239. What prompts

  240. the journey of Abraham

  241. that we read about

  242. in Genesis 12?

  243. It was God's direct call,

  244. wasn't it?

  245. It was God's word

  246. to him.

  247. And,

  248. it's so interesting

  249. to see that the story

  250. of Abraham's life

  251. in Genesis,

  252. as it's told by the author,

  253. it begins and ends

  254. in a very similar way.

  255. In Genesis 12,

  256. we hear God say to Abraham,

  257. leave and go.

  258. And then,

  259. in a couple of weeks,

  260. we'll get to Genesis 22

  261. and we hear God say,

  262. take and go.

  263. And so,

  264. this says to us

  265. that the whole of Abraham's life,

  266. and more than that,

  267. the whole of the life

  268. of faith,

  269. is to find direction

  270. from God's word.

  271. For us,

  272. the Bible,

  273. the word of God.

  274. But let's think about

  275. God's call to Abraham.

  276. Let's think about

  277. what did it mean to him?

  278. And what does it say

  279. about how God speaks

  280. and calls today?

  281. So,

  282. let me just identify

  283. one or two patterns.

  284. First,

  285. to recognize that

  286. when God calls Abraham,

  287. we should hear this

  288. as a new beginning.

  289. This is like new creation.

  290. Now,

  291. if you were to turn

  292. to Genesis 1,

  293. you would find this pattern.

  294. God said something

  295. and it was so.

  296. God said,

  297. let there be light

  298. and there was light.

  299. Now,

  300. look at Genesis 12,

  301. 1.

  302. The Lord said,

  303. go.

  304. Verse 4,

  305. so Abraham went.

  306. It's new beginning.

  307. And in this new beginning,

  308. we need to understand

  309. the patience

  310. and the mercy of God.

  311. He is the one

  312. who created everything

  313. and everyone,

  314. perfect relationships,

  315. gave them every good gift.

  316. And what people have done

  317. since the beginning

  318. is they've treated God shamefully.

  319. In the story of Genesis,

  320. eating the forbidden fruit,

  321. choosing a way of life

  322. that was entirely evil

  323. all of the time

  324. in Noah's day.

  325. And then Tower of Babel

  326. wanting to replace

  327. and erase God

  328. from the picture.

  329. And what's God's response?

  330. God speaks.

  331. God seeks.

  332. God starts again.

  333. And so there's wonderful hope

  334. for any and for all of us

  335. when we mess up,

  336. when we ignore God,

  337. when we're aware of our sin.

  338. Maybe no story shows it better

  339. than the story Jesus told

  340. of the prodigal son

  341. in Luke 15.

  342. There was the son who said,

  343. Father, I can't wait

  344. till you're dead.

  345. Give me my share

  346. of the inheritance.

  347. And he went to a far country.

  348. And he wasted all his money.

  349. And he found himself living

  350. a desperate

  351. and a shameful existence.

  352. But what happened to that boy

  353. when he made the journey

  354. back home?

  355. Beyond the shame

  356. and the rejection

  357. and the disgrace

  358. that that son had brought

  359. on his family,

  360. there was a father

  361. with open arms

  362. running,

  363. with tears running down

  364. his face.

  365. You're home.

  366. I'm so glad

  367. to have you back.

  368. Let's have a feast.

  369. Our God is a God of grace

  370. and new beginnings.

  371. So that's the second thing

  372. to notice about the pattern.

  373. So it's a new beginning.

  374. It's also gracious.

  375. There is in this call

  376. to Abraham

  377. a reversing

  378. of God's curse

  379. and God's judgment.

  380. So we're going to do

  381. some maths together.

  382. Look at verses 2 and 3

  383. and count how many times

  384. you read the word

  385. bless or blessing.

  386. I will make you

  387. into a great nation

  388. and I will bless you.

  389. I will make your name great

  390. and you will be

  391. a blessing.

  392. I will bless

  393. those who bless you

  394. and whoever curses you

  395. I will curse

  396. and all peoples on earth

  397. will be blessed

  398. through you.

  399. So that's five times,

  400. yes?

  401. Five times blessing.

  402. In Genesis 1 to 11,

  403. guess how many times

  404. we are told

  405. that sin

  406. brings curse

  407. and judgment.

  408. The answer?

  409. Five.

  410. What point is God making?

  411. He is making the point

  412. that God's grace

  413. is always the answer

  414. to our human sin

  415. and rebellion.

  416. That while we deserve

  417. curse

  418. and judgment

  419. and separation,

  420. the God of grace

  421. offers

  422. his blessing.

  423. Abraham is part of that

  424. people who have been

  425. rejecting God's word,

  426. turning to do evil,

  427. creating a life

  428. without God.

  429. The ruin,

  430. the separation,

  431. the shame,

  432. the misery.

  433. Abraham was part of that

  434. but God's response

  435. was grace.

  436. Abraham wasn't looking

  437. for God

  438. but God took the initiative

  439. to come near

  440. and wonderfully

  441. this gracious God

  442. will do it again

  443. in his son,

  444. the Lord Jesus.

  445. As he comes near,

  446. so near as to become

  447. one of us,

  448. to save us

  449. and to restore us

  450. and to remove our shame.

  451. So the call

  452. is both new creation

  453. and it's grace

  454. but recognize too

  455. that it's costly.

  456. We heard that in verse 1,

  457. didn't we?

  458. Go from your country,

  459. your people

  460. and your father's household.

  461. There's three levels of cost.

  462. Everything is going to be

  463. given up by Abraham,

  464. his sense of identity

  465. and security,

  466. his place,

  467. his people.

  468. He's going to leave it all

  469. because the Lord God,

  470. the personal God,

  471. has called him to do that

  472. and he has promised blessing

  473. if he will do that.

  474. I read this week

  475. of a pastor in Laos,

  476. Southeast Asia.

  477. When he first heard

  478. about Jesus

  479. and he trusted in Jesus,

  480. he was rejected

  481. by his family

  482. and as he began

  483. to tell people

  484. in his community

  485. about Jesus,

  486. he found himself

  487. rejected

  488. rejected

  489. and abused

  490. within the community

  491. and then in the fullness

  492. of time

  493. when he set up a church

  494. to worship Jesus,

  495. he was multiple times

  496. attacked

  497. and imprisoned.

  498. The costly call

  499. but he still obeyed.

  500. Now we read in Matthew chapter 4

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  501. about the disciples.

  502. Their call from Jesus

  503. came at a cost,

  504. didn't it?

  505. To follow Jesus

  506. means he must come first

  507. and remember the response

  508. of the disciples.

  509. They leave their jobs,

  510. they leave their families,

  511. they leave their own plans behind

  512. because they've come

  513. to recognize

  514. well Jesus is God's king

  515. and he is calling us

  516. to loyalty and love

  517. and because they had experienced

  518. God's love in Jesus,

  519. they gladly followed.

  520. But it was costly

  521. for you and for me.

  522. If you're a Christian,

  523. you will know this,

  524. to say that God is in charge

  525. and not me,

  526. that comes with cost.

  527. Sometimes the cost

  528. is our own personal comfort.

  529. Sometimes the cost is

  530. we have to start struggling

  531. and battling against sin

  532. which we were previously

  533. really comfy in.

  534. Maybe the cost for us

  535. is feeling somewhat despised

  536. by our family

  537. or by our friends.

  538. So we've seen the person

  539. who calls.

  540. We've seen the pattern

  541. of God's call.

  542. Let's just think for a few moments

  543. about the promise itself

  544. because this is an amazing section

  545. of the Bible.

  546. This is key in God's big story.

  547. So look with me again

  548. at verses 2 and 3

  549. and think about the promise

  550. and think about what this means

  551. for Abraham.

  552. God says to him,

  553. I will make you into a great nation

  554. and I will bless you.

  555. Abraham,

  556. he's 75.

  557. His wife

  558. cannot have children.

  559. But now he's been told

  560. by this God

  561. that he's only just met

  562. that a nation

  563. will be formed

  564. from his family.

  565. God doesn't stop there.

  566. Verse 2,

  567. I will make your name great

  568. and you will be a blessing.

  569. Again,

  570. this is a contrast

  571. to what was happening

  572. in Babel.

  573. In Babel,

  574. they were building

  575. that great tower saying,

  576. hey,

  577. let's make a name

  578. for ourselves.

  579. But here is God

  580. coming to honor

  581. Abraham

  582. to build a name

  583. for him.

  584. And then think about

  585. this idea of blessing.

  586. Here is God's goodness.

  587. Here is God's life

  588. flowing to Abraham.

  589. And notice the progress.

  590. So it begins

  591. with a promise

  592. that Abraham himself

  593. will be blessed.

  594. And then as it goes on,

  595. Abraham's name

  596. will become a blessing.

  597. And then in verse 3,

  598. there's blessing

  599. for those who will

  600. treat Abraham well.

  601. And then it climaxes

  602. with this,

  603. that there will be blessing

  604. for the world

  605. through Abraham

  606. and through his family.

  607. That's a remarkable

  608. set of statements

  609. of blessings

  610. coming from God

  611. and then flowing

  612. from God,

  613. flowing from Abraham

  614. to the world.

  615. We can think about Abraham

  616. functioning as

  617. a spiritual

  618. satellite dish.

  619. You know how

  620. satellite dishes work

  621. where they receive

  622. messages

  623. and then they convey

  624. and transmit

  625. those messages.

  626. Well,

  627. here is Abraham

  628. and his family

  629. and they are receiving

  630. God's blessing.

  631. But they're not to keep

  632. it to themselves.

  633. This blessing,

  634. this goodness,

  635. this life from God,

  636. it's going to be transmitted

  637. all around the world.

  638. It's a wonderful principle

  639. and priority

  640. that God actually

  641. still sets for the church.

  642. We receive

  643. God's grace

  644. and God's salvation

  645. and God's life

  646. so that we would then

  647. share it,

  648. transmit it

  649. to the people

  650. around us.

  651. God speaks.

  652. So here's what we've seen

  653. about God.

  654. He is personal.

  655. He has a name

  656. and he calls to people

  657. and he makes

  658. great promises.

  659. Now this is a pattern

  660. that we will see

  661. repeating

  662. many years later

  663. when another

  664. would leave

  665. and go.

  666. This time

  667. the eternal

  668. son of God

  669. leaving the worship

  670. and glory of heaven

  671. to go,

  672. to come

  673. into this world

  674. to become one of us.

  675. And Jesus' journey

  676. was one of obedience

  677. to his father's call

  678. and to the father's

  679. great plan of salvation.

  680. The life of Jesus

  681. was a journey

  682. of faith

  683. which would take him

  684. all the way

  685. to the cross.

  686. And think about

  687. God's grace

  688. to people

  689. on the cross.

  690. Here is Jesus,

  691. the perfect one

  692. father loves him

  693. but he dies

  694. under God's

  695. curse.

  696. Feeling the full

  697. weight

  698. of God's wrath

  699. against sin

  700. for our sin,

  701. for our shame

  702. and for our salvation

  703. to give us

  704. his blessing.

  705. And like those

  706. first disciples,

  707. Jesus now

  708. comes to us

  709. revealing God

  710. to us,

  711. revealing the message

  712. of good news

  713. to us

  714. and he makes

  715. great promises

  716. to us,

  717. the promise of

  718. forgiveness,

  719. the promise of

  720. new life,

  721. the promise of

  722. eternal life

  723. and he calls

  724. us to respond

  725. to know this

  726. life for ourselves.

  727. So Jesus

  728. is how you

  729. and I

  730. can know

  731. God

  732. personally

  733. and we can

  734. hear God

  735. speak.

  736. So God

  737. speaks

  738. but we also

  739. need to think

  740. about Abraham's

  741. response

  742. and we can do

  743. that much

  744. much more

  745. briefly.

  746. So I

  747. imagine all

  748. of us

  749. are familiar

  750. with the

  751. principle

  752. that when

  753. things sound

  754. too good

  755. to be true

  756. they usually

  757. are.

  758. This summer

  759. we narrowly

  760. avoided

  761. a vintage

  762. scam.

  763. I imagine

  764. we are not

  765. alone in that.

  766. There was a

  767. great item

  768. on sale

  769. at a really

  770. great price

  771. and there was

  772. a really

  773. convincing

  774. sob story

  775. because AI

  776. knows what

  777. it's doing

  778. and there

  779. was a really

  780. convincing

  781. but entirely

  782. fake set

  783. of delivery

  784. notifications

  785. and fake

  786. tracking

  787. numbers.

  788. Well eventually

  789. we figured

  790. something's not

  791. adding up here.

  792. We got a bit

  793. suspicious.

  794. Did a wee bit

  795. of googling

  796. and discovered

  797. yep we'd

  798. been caught

  799. in a

  800. classic scam

  801. and the

  802. internet gave

  803. me the sage

  804. advice.

  805. On Vinted

  806. if something

  807. seems too

  808. good to be

  809. true

  810. it is.

  811. So there's

  812. my life

  813. lesson for

  814. today.

  815. But far

  816. more important

  817. for our

  818. purpose

  819. picture

  820. Abraham.

  821. He's in

  822. his tent

  823. in this

  824. place

  825. called

  826. Haran.

  827. He is

  828. surrounded

  829. by his

  830. family.

  831. He is

  832. pretty

  833. wealthy

  834. as a

  835. man.

  836. He is

  837. elderly.

  838. Perhaps

  839. he's feeling

  840. a sense

  841. of sadness

  842. because he

  843. doesn't have

  844. a son

  845. to carry

  846. on his

  847. family line

  848. and then

  849. one day

  850. he hears

  851. the Lord

  852. speak to

  853. him.

  854. This man

  855. who has

  856. spent all

  857. his days

  858. worshipping

  859. statues

  860. maybe carving

  861. one himself

  862. he hears

  863. the living

  864. God speak

  865. and not

  866. just speak

  867. he hears

  868. these remarkable

  869. promises

  870. invited to

  871. follow God

  872. and to

  873. receive God's

  874. blessing

  875. and to know

  876. life with God.

  877. So what's

  878. Abraham going to

  879. do?

  880. Is he going

  881. to think

  882. well this

  883. sounds too

  884. good to

  885. be true?

  886. We read

  887. didn't we

  888. Abraham's

  889. response

  890. I love

  891. the story

  892. of Abraham

  893. this picture

  894. of a man

  895. who is

  896. elderly

  897. for sure

  898. but his

  899. spiritual

  900. reflexes

  901. they're

  902. sharp.

  903. So he

  904. believes

  905. God

  906. he hears

  907. God speak

  908. tell him

  909. to do

  910. something

  911. and his

  912. reflex

  913. gets up

  914. he packs

  915. up

  916. and he's

  917. ready to

  918. go.

  919. And it's

  920. wonderful to

  921. think about

  922. that man

  923. Abraham

  924. as he

  925. responds to

  926. God

  927. the personal

  928. God

  929. the God

  930. who speaks

  931. his life

  932. has changed

  933. his destiny

  934. has changed

  935. his eternity

  936. has changed

  937. the day that

  938. God spoke

  939. and he

  940. answered.

  941. So two things

  942. about Abraham's

  943. response

  944. first we see

  945. that faith

  946. obeys

  947. God.

  948. So we saw

  949. this already

  950. verse 1

  951. the Lord

  952. said to

  953. Abraham

  954. go from

  955. your country

  956. and go

  957. to the land

  958. I will

  959. show you

  960. verse 4

  961. so Abraham

  962. went as

  963. the Lord

  964. had told

  965. him.

  966. There is

  967. no question

  968. about where

  969. Abraham's

  970. first loyalty

  971. lies.

  972. When God

  973. calls

  974. when the

  975. Lord God

  976. calls

  977. he comes

  978. first

  979. and it's

  980. remarkable

  981. too that

  982. when God

  983. promises

  984. even when

  985. these promises

  986. seem out

  987. of this

  988. world

  989. Abraham

  990. lives by

  991. faith

  992. and he

  993. trusts

  994. that

  995. nothing

  996. is

  997. impossible

  998. with

  999. God

  1000. and

  1001. even

  1002. his

  1003. journey

  1004. has no

  1005. clear

  1006. destination

  1007. he's just

  1008. to go

  1009. where

  1010. God

  1011. tells him

  1012. to go

  1013. he doesn't

  1014. do what

  1015. we do

  1016. you know

  1017. plot our

  1018. journey

  1019. in Google

  1020. Maps

  1021. rather

  1022. this is

  1023. faith

  1024. that

  1025. trusts

  1026. God

  1027. that

  1028. takes

  1029. God

  1030. at

  1031. his

  1032. word

  1033. and

  1034. ultimately

  1035. that

  1036. takes

  1037. God's

  1038. hand

  1039. on a

  1040. wonderful

  1041. journey

  1042. of

  1043. faith

  1044. that's

  1045. what

  1046. we're

  1047. invited

  1048. into

  1049. to

  1050. live

  1051. by

  1052. faith

  1053. to

  1054. live

  1055. with

  1056. God

  1057. through

  1058. this

  1059. life

  1060. so

  1061. faith

  1062. obeys

  1063. God

  1064. and

  1065. the

  1066. other

  1067. thing

  1068. that

  1069. we

  1070. see

  1071. about

  1072. Abraham's

  1073. response

  1074. is

  1075. that

  1076. faith

  1077. worships

  1078. God

  1079. verse

  1080. 7

  1081. verse

  1082. 8

  1083. the

  1084. Lord

  1085. appeared

  1086. to

  1087. Abraham

  1088. and

  1089. said

  1090. to

  1091. your

  1092. offspring

  1093. I

  1094. will

  1095. give

  1096. this

  1097. land

  1098. so

  1099. he

  1100. built

  1101. an

  1102. altar

  1103. to

  1104. it

  1105. appeared

  1106. to

  1107. him

  1108. from

  1109. there

  1110. he

  1111. went

  1112. on

  1113. towards

  1114. the

  1115. hills

  1116. east

  1117. of

  1118. Bethel

  1119. and

  1120. pitched

  1121. his

  1122. tent

  1123. with

  1124. Bethel

  1125. in the

  1126. west

  1127. and

  1128. Ai

  1129. on

  1130. the

  1131. east

  1132. there

  1133. he

  1134. built

  1135. an

  1136. altar

  1137. to

  1138. the

  1139. Lord

  1140. and

  1141. called

  1142. on

  1143. the

  1144. name

  1145. of

  1146. the

  1147. Lord

  1148. and

  1149. my

  1150. my

  1151. my

  1152. folks

  1153. they

  1154. live

  1155. up

  1156. in

  1157. the

  1158. highlands

  1159. in

  1160. the

  1161. black

  1162. isle

  1163. and

  1164. they

  1165. live

  1166. really

  1167. near

  1168. a

  1169. campsite

  1170. and

  1171. the

  1172. campsite

  1173. has

  1174. a

  1175. wonderful

  1176. piece

  1177. of

  1178. philosophy

  1179. to

  1180. encourage

  1181. us

  1182. to

  1183. not

  1184. litter

  1185. it

  1186. says

  1187. leave

  1188. nothing

  1189. behind

  1190. but

  1191. footprints

  1192. and

  1193. waste

  1194. nothing

  1195. but

  1196. time

  1197. there's

  1198. more

  1199. good

  1200. wisdom

  1201. for

  1202. us

  1203. Abraham

  1204. Abraham

  1205. Abraham

  1206. would

  1207. say

  1208. I'm

  1209. not

  1210. listening

  1211. to

  1212. that

  1213. wisdom

  1214. because

  1215. Abraham

  1216. absolutely

  1217. does

  1218. leave

  1219. something

  1220. behind

  1221. what

  1222. does

  1223. Abraham

  1224. leave

  1225. behind

  1226. he

  1227. leaves

  1228. behind

  1229. these

  1230. altars

  1231. he

  1232. leaves

  1233. behind

  1234. evidence

  1235. wherever

  1236. he

  1237. goes

  1238. that

  1239. he

  1240. is

  1241. now

  1242. worshipping

  1243. the

  1244. one

  1245. true

  1246. and

  1247. living

  1248. God

  1249. so

  1250. other

  1251. people

  1252. would

  1253. see

  1254. these

  1255. altars

  1256. and

  1257. they'd

  1258. see

  1259. Abraham

  1260. worshipping

  1261. and

  1262. future

  1263. generations

  1264. see

  1265. these

  1266. altars

  1267. and

  1268. they

  1269. are

  1270. taught

  1271. this

  1272. is

  1273. where

  1274. Abraham

  1275. worshipped

  1276. the

  1277. one

  1278. true

  1279. and

  1280. living

  1281. God

  1282. it's

  1283. like

  1284. a

  1285. monument

  1286. to

  1287. his

  1288. faith

  1289. the

  1290. true

  1291. God

  1292. is

  1293. worshipped

  1294. here

  1295. what

  1296. prompts

  1297. him

  1298. verse

  1299. 7

  1300. is

  1301. that

  1302. the

  1303. Lord

  1304. appeared

  1305. to

  1306. him

  1307. now

  1308. the

  1309. Lord

  1310. is

  1311. not

  1312. just

  1313. speaking

  1314. now

  1315. the

  1316. Lord

  1317. is

  1318. showing

  1319. his

  1320. glory

  1321. and

  1322. again

  1323. remember

  1324. God

  1325. is

  1326. personal

  1327. and

  1328. he

  1329. is

  1330. active

  1331. and

  1332. he

  1333. is

  1334. living

  1335. and

  1336. he

  1337. is

  1338. a

  1339. close

  1340. relationship

  1341. with

  1342. Abraham

  1343. and

  1344. and

  1345. when

  1346. he

  1347. sees

  1348. God's

  1349. glory

  1350. his

  1351. instinct

  1352. is

  1353. to

  1354. worship

  1355. his

  1356. family

  1357. probably

  1358. the

  1359. only

  1360. one

  1361. surrounded

  1362. by

  1363. pagan

  1364. nations

  1365. but

  1366. he

  1367. will

  1368. stand

  1369. and

  1370. he

  1371. will

  1372. bow

  1373. and

  1374. he

  1375. will

  1376. worship

  1377. this

  1378. God

  1379. who

  1380. has

  1381. made

  1382. himself

  1383. known

  1384. he

  1385. functions

  1386. like a

  1387. light

  1388. in the

  1389. darkness

  1390. he

  1391. functions

  1392. like a

  1393. small

  1394. church

  1395. on a

  1396. mission

  1397. to

  1398. share

  1399. God's

  1400. glory

  1401. in

  1402. the

  1403. world

  1404. faith

  1405. obeys

  1406. and

  1407. faith

  1408. worships

  1409. who

  1410. is

  1411. God

  1412. he

  1413. is

  1414. the

  1415. personal

  1416. God

  1417. who

  1418. speaks

  1419. who

  1420. calls

  1421. he

  1422. promises

  1423. what's

  1424. our

  1425. response

  1426. Genesis

  1427. 12

  1428. is

  1429. the

  1430. story

  1431. of

  1432. God

  1433. in

  1434. his

  1435. grace

  1436. and

  1437. goodness

  1438. invading

  1439. history

  1440. coming

  1441. to a

  1442. world

  1443. in

  1444. rebellion

  1445. and

  1446. under

  1447. the

  1448. curse

  1449. to

  1450. reveal

  1451. himself

  1452. to

  1453. make

  1454. things

  1455. new

  1456. and

  1457. to

  1458. bring

  1459. blessing

  1460. and

  1461. Abraham

  1462. shows

  1463. us

  1464. the

  1465. right

  1466. response

  1467. to

  1468. that

  1469. kind

  1470. of

  1471. act

  1472. of

  1473. God

  1474. is

  1475. faith

  1476. and

  1477. worship

  1478. this

  1479. morning

  1480. do we

  1481. see how

  1482. this

  1483. connects

  1484. with

  1485. our

  1486. own

  1487. stories

  1488. do we

  1489. recognize

  1490. that

  1491. God

  1492. will

  1493. once

  1494. again

  1495. invade

  1496. history

  1497. when

  1498. Jesus

  1499. his

  1500. own

  1501. son

  1502. comes

  1503. and

  1504. ultimately

  1505. Jesus

  1506. will

  1507. stand

  1508. toe

  1509. to

  1510. toe

  1511. against

  1512. darkness

  1513. and

  1514. rebellion

  1515. against

  1516. Satan

  1517. and

  1518. sin

  1519. and

  1520. death

  1521. and he

  1522. will win

  1523. a great

  1524. victory

  1525. for himself

  1526. and for

  1527. his people

  1528. by way

  1529. of the

  1530. cross

  1531. and then

  1532. his

  1533. resurrection

  1534. so that

  1535. the power

  1536. of sin

  1537. is broken

  1538. so that

  1539. forgiveness

  1540. and life

  1541. are made

  1542. available to

  1543. us

  1544. and he

  1545. calls us

  1546. calls us

  1547. into life

  1548. with the

  1549. living God

  1550. and so it's

  1551. remarkable

  1552. that again

  1553. in Jesus

  1554. God

  1555. answers

  1556. and speaks

  1557. into the

  1558. silence

  1559. and the

  1560. loneliness

  1561. and the

  1562. confusion

  1563. revealing to

  1564. us

  1565. God

  1566. is real

  1567. God

  1568. offers

  1569. relationship

  1570. and that

  1571. to do

  1572. that

  1573. God

  1574. will

  1575. pay

  1576. the

  1577. ultimate

  1578. price

  1579. in

  1580. Jesus

  1581. to

  1582. rescue

  1583. and

  1584. to

  1585. reconcile

  1586. so we

  1587. join

  1588. Abraham

  1589. to live

  1590. this life

  1591. of faith

  1592. and

  1593. worship

  1594. when we

  1595. take up

  1596. our

  1597. privilege

  1598. of going

  1599. through

  1600. life

  1601. day

  1602. by

  1603. day

  1604. enjoying

  1605. life

  1606. with

  1607. God

  1608. knowing

  1609. God

  1610. is

  1611. working

  1612. in

  1613. us

  1614. and

  1615. for

  1616. us

  1617. hearing

  1618. him

  1619. speak

  1620. to

  1621. us

  1622. in

  1623. his

  1624. words

  1625. speaking

  1626. to

  1627. him

  1628. in

  1629. prayer

  1630. will

  1631. we

  1632. make

  1633. the

  1634. most

  1635. of

  1636. that

  1637. to

  1638. be

  1639. so

  1640. thankful

  1641. that

  1642. he's

  1643. given

  1644. us

  1645. this

  1646. new

  1647. identity

  1648. and

  1649. this

  1650. new

  1651. destiny

  1652. at

  1653. a time

  1654. when

  1655. so

  1656. many

  1657. people

  1658. are

  1659. searching

  1660. for

  1661. something

  1662. more

  1663. but

  1664. don't

  1665. know

  1666. where

  1667. to

  1668. go

  1669. as

  1670. we

  1671. find

  1672. ourselves

  1673. surrounded

  1674. by

  1675. confusion

  1676. do

  1677. we

  1678. understand

  1679. that

  1680. Jesus

  1681. is

  1682. God's

  1683. answer

  1684. and

  1685. we

  1686. can

  1687. shine

  1688. a

  1689. light

  1690. drawing

  1691. others

  1692. to

  1693. know

  1694. Jesus

  1695. as

  1696. saviour

  1697. and

  1698. his

  1699. friend

  1700. are you

  1701. trusting

  1702. this

  1703. God

  1704. today

  1705. even

  1706. today

  1707. we've

  1708. heard

  1709. him

  1710. speak

  1711. to

  1712. us

  1713. in

  1714. his

  1715. word

  1716. calling

  1717. us

  1718. out

  1719. of

  1720. our

  1721. old

  1722. life

  1723. to

  1724. place

  1725. our

  1726. trust

  1727. in

  1728. Jesus

  1729. calling

  1730. us

  1731. to

  1732. believe

  1733. his

  1734. promise

  1735. that

  1736. he

  1737. will

  1738. save

  1739. us

  1740. that

  1741. he

  1742. will

  1743. forgive

  1744. us

  1745. he

  1746. will

  1747. be

  1748. with

  1749. us

  1750. he

  1751. will

  1752. grant

  1753. us

  1754. eternal

  1755. life

  1756. if

  1757. we

  1758. place

  1759. our

  1760. faith

  1761. in

  1762. Jesus

  1763. do

  1764. we

  1765. see

  1766. that

  1767. God

  1768. speaks

  1769. so

  1770. that

  1771. we

  1772. can

  1773. enjoy

  1774. life

  1775. with

  1776. him

  1777. both

  1778. now

  1779. and

  1780. forever

  1781. let's

  1782. pray

  1783. and give

  1784. thanks

  1785. our

  1786. God

  1787. and

  1788. our

  1789. Father

  1790. we

  1791. thank

  1792. you

  1793. that

  1794. you

  1795. did

  1796. not

  1797. leave

  1798. the

  1799. world

  1800. to

  1801. itself

  1802. but

  1803. rather

  1804. in

  1805. your

  1806. grace

  1807. and

  1808. your

  1809. goodness

  1810. you

  1811. entered

  1812. in

  1813. we

  1814. thank

  1815. you

  1816. for

  1817. demonstrating

  1818. your

  1819. love

  1820. in

  1821. calling

  1822. Abraham

  1823. and

  1824. making

  1825. these

  1826. wonderful

  1827. promises

  1828. and

  1829. ultimately

  1830. as we

  1831. see

  1832. those

  1833. promises

  1834. fulfilled

  1835. in the

  1836. sending

  1837. of your

  1838. son

  1839. the

  1840. Lord

  1841. Jesus

  1842. we

  1843. thank

  1844. you

  1845. that

  1846. if

  1847. anyone

  1848. is

  1849. in

  1850. Christ

  1851. Jesus

  1852. he

  1853. is

  1854. a

  1855. new

  1856. creation

  1857. now

  1858. we

  1859. thank

  1860. you

  1861. that

  1862. Jesus

  1863. has

  1864. taken

  1865. the

  1866. curse

  1867. for

  1868. us

  1869. so

  1870. that

  1871. we

  1872. might

  1873. enjoy

  1874. the

  1875. blessing

  1876. of

  1877. God

  1878. and

  1879. so

  1880. we

  1881. pray

  1882. that

  1883. we

  1884. would

  1885. enjoy

  1886. the

  1887. blessing

  1888. of

  1889. life

  1890. with

  1891. God

  1892. even

  1893. today

  1894. enable

  1895. us

  1896. to

  1897. worship

  1898. with

  1899. a

  1900. sense

  1901. of

  1902. joy

  1903. because

  1904. of

  1905. who

  1906. you

  1907. are

  1908. because

  1909. you

  1910. are

  1911. personal

  1912. because

  1913. you

  1914. are

  1915. good

  1916. thank

  1917. you

  1918. for

  1919. speaking

  1920. to

  1921. us

  1922. and

  1923. we

  1924. pray

  1925. in

  1926. Jesus

  1927. name

  1928. !

  1929. Amen
