”Victory Over the World” Pastor Tony Sandoval, July 11, 2026

Hello and welcome to church. We're so

glad that you were able to join us here

at the McDonald Road 7th Day Adventist

Church for our worship time. I hope that

your time is blessed. I hope the music

blesses your soul. I hope the message

touches your heart. And if if it does,

Pastor Jamie will start with God's help

next week a fourpart sermon series on

the signs of Jesus soon return. So today

we will be looking at what message Jesus

had before he left uh his disciples and

and and it's a going away message if you

will for us as well as we look forward

to his return. By the way, how many of

you appreciate this uh arrangement of

flowers here in the front? This is uh in

honor of Ashton and Macau Cron's fourth

wedding anniversary and they're sitting

right there. So congratulations guys and

continue to persevere in in in the home

in the marriage. It's

>> it's not easy but it's worth it. So God

bless you.

So how many of you have been enjoying

your summer?

I with my family, my wife's a teacher,

Elena's a teacher there at CA. And so we

have this little window of time in the

summer where we have to get out and go

and do things because if not, you know,

school starts soon here, beginning of

August, and then it's like she can't

it's really hard for her to take time

off. So, we go if we can to the theme

parks and uh I have a 14-year-old son

and a 11-year-old daughter and they love

to go walk around and it's hard to keep

up with them and they want the roller

coasters and the zip lines and you all

know what I'm talking about. And

I love I used to love roller coasters

when I was younger, like 20 years ago,

but my body can't keep up now. I don't

know how many of you could could relate.

And then the young people are like,

"Well, you're getting old, Pastor Tony."

And I I'll I'll admit that. But I just,

you know, we go like a ride and and my

daughter, she's like, "Come on, Dad."

And I'm like thinking, you know, what

happens if this thing breaks? And you

just can't help thinking all these

things, right? And I do one ride and

then maybe two rides and then I just

don't have any more adrenaline. I'm just

like fatigued. I'm done. And so she's

like, "Come on, let's go." And I'm like,

"Okay, let's go." And I'm trying. I'm

trying. Well, last summer we were at

Kahuta Springs, the conference's uh

campground, and they have a zipline

there. It's like a 50-ft drop, and it it

goes across the lake like 1,000 ft. I

don't know how many of you are familiar

with that. And so, there's there's two

cables and so my son and daughter go

before my wife and I and they made it

look so easy. You know, my daughter is

like 40 lbs and so she's like nothing.

So, so innocent. But for me, as I'm stra

as I'm getting harnessed and strapped

in, I'm looking at the cable, you know,

it's like it's like time slows down and

I'm like feeling my heartbeat, my

breathing, I'm sweating and the young

man that's uh harnessing me in and I'm

making sure the carabiner is good and

everything. He's like, "Don't worry, we

do this all the time. You'll you'll do

great." And I'm like, you know, I'm

trying to enjoy the moment and I'm

looking down. I'm like, "Would I survive

this fall? you know, I would I would

probably break a leg and if I fall in

the lake, I don't know how deep that

lake is. And all these thoughts are

running through your head. Like you want

to enjoy the moment, but but reality

kicks in. And Jesus when now that we're

going to look at our scripture reading

as he as he's telling his disciples,

the world will give you tribulations,

but but have peace, have joy. It's not

easy, right? to to maintain the peace,

maintain the joy in the middle of this

storm. So, if you have your Bibles,

let's look at John 16. And I want to

start reading in verse 31.

John 16:31. Jesus answered them, "Do you

John 16:31

now believe?" Verse 32. Indeed, the hour

is coming, yes, has now come that you

will be scattered each to his own, and

will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone

because who is with me?

>> My father.

>> The Father is with Jesus. These things I

have spoken to you that in me you may

have peace. In the world you will have

tribulation but be of good cheer for I

have overcome the world. Other

translations say say I have victory over

the world. I have prevailed. I have

basically won against the world. There's

a very famous athletic brand. I think

we've all seen it with the swoosh. Many

of us pronounce it Nike. I used to

pronounce it Nike. Uh but in in the

Greek it's Nik. and it means victory.

And in this specific verse that was our

scripture reading of John 16:33 when

John 16:33

Jesus is saying, "I have overcome the

world." It's a specific tense of the

victory word in Greek that's only found

once in the whole Bible. And it is in

this verse. And the real translation is,

I have victory over the world. I am

overcoming the world. And I will always

be overcoming the world.

>> Amen. That's what Jesus is telling his

disciples. That's what Jesus is telling

us. And how do we have this victory is

knowing that the father is with us. The

father will not abandon us. And we have

that cheer and that peace that the world

should not be able to take away from us.

And as Jesus is saying this, he's about

to demonstrate it, right? He's about to

put on a master class. He's like saying,

"Now I'm going to show you as I get

arrested, as I get tortured and

executed, how even in the midst of this,

I'm going to maintain my peace and

maintain my joy,

as relative as that may be, because I

know the father is with me." And how is

the father with Jesus? How is the father

with us? He's only a prayer away. How do

I know this? How do I come to this

conclusion? Well, the very next verse,

the the entire chapter 17 of John is

what is Jesus praying? He's praying for

himself. He's praying for his disciples.

And he he's even praying for us, the

future believers, for all believers. If

you read the entire chapter, and it's

incredible. It's powerful to know that

Jesus has us in mind while he's praying

back then. And I'm sure he has this in

mind now, right? He's aware of what each

and every one of us are going through.

What is threatening your joy? What is

threatening your peace? And and he is

encouraging us to to pray to know that

the father is right there. When we go to

John 18, and I'm I'm doing a little

preamble because I want to get into um a

specific discourse here. But when we

look at John 18, Jesus arrives at a

garden, and it's that it says he was

familiar going with with his disciples.

And what does he continue to do in that

garden?

>> He continues to pray. And it doesn't say

it in in in John in the gospel here, but

when we compare Matthew, Mark, Luke, we

see that when Jesus was in the garden,

his disciples couldn't keep up. They

were disinterested. Maybe they were just

exhausted. And and Jesus is there

praying. He knows what's about to

happen. He probably had some anxiety. He

probably had emotions. He knew the hour

was was at hand. He was about to to go

through very difficult time and he

needed to pray there more than ever. But

is prayer only when we're going through

difficulty?

>> No,

>> I don't think so. The the way Jesus is

framing it, it's it's it should be a

constant relationship we're having with

the father

>> in the joy and the peace. And when the

hard times come, which they will, we

will have already established that

relationship hopefully with the father

so that we won't have our peace and our

joy threatened. In in our society, in

our culture, prayer is viewed as

something that you do as a last resort,

something out of desperation. In um

football, NFL football, not World Cup

soccer, but the you know the football

that you throw with your hand, there's

this play called the Hail Mary. And

obviously we don't pray to marry, but

it's a a a play that you do from one

extreme of the field to the other and

you just throw up the ball, launch up

the ball as high as you can, hoping that

your teammate will catch it. But it's

it's it's it's like a last resort,

right? And so that's the mentality

unfortunately that we have nowadays with

prayer. It's like when all has when all

else has failed, now let's pray. I don't

I don't agree with that. And I don't I

don't think that is what Jesus was

trying to show his disciples. It should

be a constant communication with the

father. And how difficult is it, right?

Just to whisper a prayer to the father

and he's right there to help us. So as

Jesus is praying, there's conspiring

going on behind his back.

the Jews had to go through the Romans to

get soldiers to come arrest Jesus as as

we're going to see that happens here in

this chapter. And I'm pretty sure it was

Pilate that was behind the authorization

of sending out that troop of soldiers

that that group of soldiers to arrest

Jesus.

That's that's what I'm I'm deducing

here. And even though things are falling

apart, things are going haywire, the

disciples will scatter, Jesus will get

arrested, we still see here that Jesus

is showing us the importance of praying.

I was speaking to a young lady recently

and she asked me to pray for her and she

said, "Pastor Tony, your prayers are

more her easily heard by God than mine."

And I I I I said, "Yes, I'm going to

pray for you, but I want to encourage

you to pray as well because you are just

as able to go to the throne of grace as

I am able to."

>> Amen.

>> And and so she was like, "Well, I'm

going through a lot. I haven't been the

best. I have my struggles." And I was

like, "The Father God is is ready to

hear your prayer if you're willing to

pray for him or pray to him." And so she

was encouraged and I hope she um prays

more. Now in all the four gospels,

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, I've

counted under 10 things. There's only

nine things that are

parallel in all the four gospels. And

and the discourse that we're about to

see with Pilate that is on the cover of

of the bulletin is one of those nine

things that's only found in all four

gospels. So it must have been really

important, right? And also it's the last

thing that's in common in the four

gospels. So as we study um the the word

of God, we see that all authors were

inspired to talk about this event with

the prefect or the governor Ponteus

Pilate. And in a weird way, it's good

that there was an outside source that

had to do something with the trial of

Jesus, right? Because wouldn't it have

been so biased if it was only with the

Jews? No outside source, no outside

party to say or to condemn Jesus. But

because we have this account of the

Roman Empire getting involved through

Pilate and it's found in all these Greek

ancient manuscripts or codecs or

papyruses and and we have all this

evidence. There was also an

archaeological stone found in 1961

in Cesaria Maritima which is now in the

Jerusalem Museum which has Pilot's name.

And so you can imagine the secular

historians like wow the Bible is true.

this pilot guy did exist and um you

could read more about it but they found

how it's from the first century and it's

totally in sync with the biblical

account

what Jesus is preparing to go through

with Pilate. It's not a regular old uh

conversation but this is this is a

litigation. This is a trial. This is a

prosecutor trying to gather evidence to

execute a a criminal Jesus in this case.

And I'm always impressed by the court

shows and the forensic movies and you

know the attorneys sometimes they come

out with these terms right in Latin like

habius corpus or double jeopardy and

you're like what? I didn't even know

that existed. And it's almost like like

this ace they have up their sleeve like

ha I got you. Well, as Jesus is

preparing for for this situation that

he's in, I don't think he was so much

brushing up on his Latin legal

terminology and, you know, if they come

out with this, I'll I'll hit him with

this legality. I think it was more the

prayer. He was relying more on his

prayer and his relationship with the

father.

So Jesus is before Pilate. But before he

goes through Pilate, there's a high

priest that

interrogates Jesus. And if you have your

Bibles, let's go to John 18. Let's look

at verse 19. It says, "The high priest

then asked Jesus about who?"

About his disciples and his doctrine.

Very interestingly enough, as we go

through Jesus response, does he ever

mention the disciples? Does he ever

throw them under the bus?

>> He does not. He stay He stays quiet. So,

just keep that in mind. If any of us

ever get caught, don't throw the rest of

us under the bus, okay? Just worry about

yourself. Pray pray for us, but don't

don't mention us. No, but seriously,

Jesus protected his disciples, right? He

he did not um mention them. He he he did

not have anything derogatory to say

about them. And ironically enough in

verse 25, Peter is denying Jesus. It

says, "Now see Simon Peter stood and

warmed himself. Therefore they said to

him, you are not also one of his

disciples, are you?" He denied it and

said, "I am not." And and as we go on,

uh Peter continues to deny Jesus. So now

we finally come to Pilate and let's go

to verse 29

where Pilate is trying to figure out

what is going on with this guy named

Jesus. Pilate then went out to them and

said, "What accusation do you bring

against this man?" And the the Jews had

this sort of approach that they just

wanted to speed the trial along. And

they were like, "Pilate, just trust us.

Don't worry about all the the details.

Just execute this guy. And Pilate was

not convinced. Pilate suspected there

was some foul play here. There was

something suspicious, something fishy

going on. And and he sense that they

were trying to pull the wool over his

eyes. Right? So he was like, "No, no,

no, no. What has this man done?" So now

the the Jews are trying to explain as

best as they can what the problem had

been.

Pilate tries to get out of condemning

Jesus four times because as soon as he

hears that Jesus is the Nazar Nazarene

which is part of uh Galilea, he sends

him to Herod. Remember that. And so

that's number one. He's like, "Ah, I'm

trying to get rid of this guy. Let me

send him to Herod." And then there was

another situation where he says, "Let's

have this guy beat. Have Jesus beat."

and then uh we'll get rid of him. And

then there's also the famous washing of

the hands. And finally, the fourth and

final time is when he finally has Jesus

crucified. But it's almost as if every

way Pilate is trying to get out of this,

he's meeting, he's hitting dead ends.

And when Jesus is before Herod, I'm

going to read a quote from a

compilation, third volume, the spirit of

prophecy. But I want you to notice how

Jesus is described before Herod. It

says, "Herod was greatly perplexed when

he looked upon the pure pale face of the

prisoner, questioned if he might not be

a god come down to earth. The very

silence of Jesus spoke to the conviction

to the heart of the king." Herod was ill

at ease, dared not ratify the

condemnation of the Jews, and he

therefore sent Jesus back to Pilate. Can

you imagine the peace on Jesus' face

where it said the pale pure Jesus had

this peace to him despite what was going

on around him. When we look at uh John

18 and let's look at verse 33. It says

that now Pilate entered the ptorium

again called Jesus and said to him are

you the king of the Jews? Why did Pilate

ask him? Where did where did Pilate get

this from? It's not in John, but when we

look at Luke 23 2, it said that when the

crowd brought uh Jesus to Pilate, they

said that Jesus was a king. And I'm I'm

guessing there was a language barrier

there because the the Jews spoke Hebrew

and Aramaic. And maybe at the time, uh

there was no word for the Messiah or or

or Christ. And so they were probably as

best as they can trying to describe it

and they said a king. And so uh Pilate

is is is running with that and he asks

uh Jesus if he is a king. Now he ends up

asking Jesus a total of four questions.

And then he presents Jesus as behold the

man when Jesus comes out with the thorny

cross and and and the purple robe. And

then at that moment he he gets a message

from his wife that she has had a dream

and she says through the messenger, "Do

not have anything to do with this man."

So it gets really personal, right? What

what Pilate is just thinking maybe it's

a ordinary run-of-the-mill

trial for another prisoner.

There's so much going on. So so much

like intellect and emotions and and the

wife. And then at at the at at that

moment we're going to see in uh John

John 19:7

19:7

when he has had Pilate has had Jesus

beaten. It says the Jews answered him,

"We have a law and according to our law,

he ought to die because he made himself

the son of God." So now they're

explaining themselves better. He's not

so much the king of the Jews. He is the

son of God. And and at this moment, I

could imagine everybody was like,

"What's going to happen?" And it says

that Pilate was even more afraid. So, so

we conclude that he was already a little

afraid. So, let's see verse 34

in John 18 what what um Jesus answers to

Pilate. He says, "Are you speaking for

yourself about this or did others tell

you this concerning me?" Jesus is

empathizing with Pilate. Jesus is

getting semi-personal with Pilate. Is

this what you think or are you just

going by what other people think? And

and Pilate resists, right? He pushes

back. He says, "Am I a Jew? I'm not from

your nation. These people are accusing

you." So the the the personal approach

Jesus is trying to have with Pilate.

Pilate rejects it and he has this sort

of like I'm just doing my job uh reply.

But we could see that Jesus is is trying

to knock on Pilate's heart, right? He's

trying to get personal here with him.

He's trying to empathize with him. So we

see the response. Verse 35. Am I a Jew?

Your own nation and chief priests have

delivered you unto me. What have you

done? And Jesus replies, my kingdom is

not of this world. If my kingdom were of

this world, my servants would fight so

that I should not be delivered to the

Jews. But now my kingdom is not from

here. Can you imagine the reaction, the

body language of Pilate at this moment?

He was probably scratching his head,

right? Wait, so you're a king but not of

the Jews? And and so Pilate's just like,

"What is going on here?" I I could

imagine um Pilate is is is confused. And

and and and it's a sort of an

intellectual dilemma.

And so he asks him, Pilate, in verse 37,

Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a

king?" Then Jesus answered, "You say

rightly that I am a king. For this cause

I was born. For this cause I have come

into the world that I should bear

witness to the truth. Everyone who hears

of the truth hears my voice. So Jesus is

appealing again to Pilate. Look, I am

from the kingdom of truth. I belong I am

representing truth and if you believe me

then you are accepting the truth. Does

Pilate believe him? We know the story.

Obviously not. Pilate rejects and

brushes it off getting I guess

rhetorical uh asks what is truth and it

is at this moment that he goes out and

he says I have no I find no fault in him

and and um he says there's a custom to

release Jesus or Barabus and then it

says starting in chapter 19 verse1 that

Pilate took Jesus and scourged him or

had him beaten

So we are familiar with this story and

after Jesus has been beaten and and

mocked

uh he still finds no fault in him but he

presents him as the man in verse 5 after

Jesus has been beat uh wearing the crown

of thorns and the purple robe and Pilate

said to them behold the man and it's

very interesting because now is when

they said well he's actually pretending

to be a god. And there is where I think

was the the the the pinnacle the the

most critical time in this conversation

in this discourse where Pilate

could have accepted Jesus as a god but

he doesn't because after this he

presents him as the king.

He he says, "Behold your king." Uh, a

few verses later. And in Matthew chapter

Matthew 27 · chapter mention

27, it is at this specific time as well

that the wife sends a message about the

dream. So, it all happens at the same

time. I remember when I was in junior

high school, there was a teacher that

was talking about Jesus as a historical

figure, but he he referred to Jesus as

Jesus Christ. And I remember I was like

probably like 12, 13 years old and it

was a big deal. The administrators came

and that that teacher of mine had gotten

in trouble because he didn't refer to

Jesus just as Jesus but as Jesus Christ.

And this wasn't a big uh inner city

school in the in the city where I grew

up. And so there's this whole respect of

all religions, the Muslims and the Jews.

And if you're referring to Jesus as the

Christ, then you're imposing

Christianity right on on these other

religions was was the argument. But he

had gotten in trouble for saying Jesus

Christ, Jesus the Messiah, Jesus our

Lord. That is we what we believe by

faith. That is what Jesus is appealing

to Pilate's heart at that moment.

And what happens immediately after this?

Immediately after Pilate hears all these

things, all these all these signs, if

you will, it says verse 9, "And went

again into the ptorium and said to

Jesus, where are you from?" But did

Jesus give him an answer?

>> No. Why do you think Jesus remained

quiet? Okay, granted, he just got beat

up. He's probably all bloody. is

probably shocked at this moment. But I

would I would venture I would dare to

say that Jesus was praying for Pilate at

this moment because this was critical.

He has just heard no Jesus is not just a

man. No, Jesus is not just a king, but

Jesus is potentially a god in human

form. And this is what you've just

heard. And and there's several evidences

and there's several emotions going

through um Pilate's mind and heart at at

this moment.

And I I think here is the critical

moment where Pilate rejects that and his

heart is hard and he falls back on his

authority. Verse 10. Then Pilate said to

him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do you

not know that I have the power to

crucify

and the power to release you?" And Jesus

answered, "You could have no power at

all against me unless it it had been

given to you from above. Therefore, the

one who delivered me to you has the

greater sin." So, a couple things here,

right? A couple things. Jesus is

referring to some sort of hierarchy. Is

he referring to a Roman hierarchy that

gave the power to Pilate or maybe

some deity higher than Pilate that had

given that power to him? So I I imagine

those thoughts crossed Pilate's head.

Also, he said Jesus said that the people

that turned him in have a greater sin,

but it implies that Pilate is not

getting off scot-free, right? He's he's

some sort of guilt in in this whole uh

situation as well.

But Pilate has a hard heart and he

rejects that Jesus could be a god. But

he accept he accept Pilate accepts that

Jesus is king of the Jews. And that's

what he has on the sign above the cross

in John 19:19. It says Jesus Jesus of

John 19:19

Naz Nazareth, King of the Jews. And he

put it in Greek, in Latin, and in

Hebrew. I want to read another quote

from uh this author, same author that

says, "His wavering and indecision

proved his irredeemable ruin. Many like

Pilate sacrifice principle and integrity

in order to shun the disagreeable

consequences. So many of us this author

is saying when we are bombarded by the

pressures and and and all these emotions

that many of us also fold like pilot

folded. But should we sacrifice

principle and integrity?

>> No, we should not.

Jesus has a message for us specifically

in Revelation chapter 3. In the first

Revelation 3 · chapter mention

couple of chapters of Revelation, there

are seven churches. And and as we

understand the chronology of church

history, we are living in that seventh

and final church. And in Revelation 3

21, to each of those seven churches,

there's a promise. If they overcome, if

they have the victory, they will have a

certain reward. But look at what it says

for us, the final church in Revelation

Revelation 3:21

3:21.

It says, "To him who overcomes or to him

who has the victory, I will grant to sit

with me on my throne as I also overcame

and sat down with my father on his

throne." We have the victory, church

family, because Jesus won the victory.

>> Amen.

And the victory is or the victory is

accomplished through prayer knowing that

the father is with us and nothing and

nobody should be able to take away our

peace and our joy. I want to close with

a story of a young boy named Joshua

Wright. This story happened about 5

years ago. And this young boy, he was 9

years old. He went on a hiking trip with

his extended family with his uncle, with

his cousins, some of the siblings were

there. and he lived in Idaho, but they

had gone uh uh hiking and camping in the

mountains of Utah, which was like about

a six-hour drive. And the father had

stayed behind. He had to work. And the

the the the boys, including Joshua,

Wright, uh was having a grand old time

with his cousins, and they were fishing

and running around. And in one of those,

he strayed away and he got lost.

And the family tried to search for him

as best as they could, but they saw that

the the clock was ticking. The hours

were were going. And so they called the

rangers. The rangers got involved. They

brought helicopters. They brought

rangers on on horses. And by now it was

getting dark. The uncle calls the

father, Joshua's father in Idaho and

says, "I have terrible news, but Joshua

has gotten lost, and we've been

searching for him for hours, and I just

wanted to let you know what the

situation is is not good." The father at

that point got a couple things ready,

got into his car, and started to drive

the 6 hours to go into those mountains

of Utah. And when he got there, it was

about maybe 2, 3 in the morning. They

had set up a camp and and they told the

father the the the authorities that were

doing the rescue effort. They said,

"It's too late. Um let's wait for

daylight for dawn and then we'll go out

and continue the search." The dad said,

the father said, "No, I need to go out

right now. I need to search for for my

son." And the authorities were like,

"Okay, but it's at your own risk." He's

like, "It's okay. I'm I'm willing to

take that risk." What they didn't know

was that the father and the son had

agreed that if they had ever were to get

lost, the son was to look for an open

area and just stay there and stay calm

and wait for somebody to look for him.

And the father knew that. And so he went

out looking for the son and when he

would look for the open where he would

intentionally look around the open area

specifically. And sure enough, when he

got to an open area, and by now the the

light of the day was starting to to peek

through, Joshua saw this man approaching

him. And he recognized that it was his

father that was the one that had found

him. And they embraced. And it was a

tearful reunion. And they were so happy.

And the authorities congratulated

Joshua, the young 9-year-old boy, for

even though he was lost, he stayed calm

in that situation.

Church family, Jesus is returning soon.

The the father is sending Jesus to

rescue us, but he wants nobody or

nothing to threaten our peace and our

joy in the midst of the world's chaos

and tribulation. I'm going to call up

our worship team as we sing our final

hymn,

We Have the Hope. I think it's 214.

And as we sing this song, let us have

that assurance that Jesus is returning

soon for us and he wants to reunite us

with our loved ones.

Let us pray. Dear heavenly father, we

want to thank you that we have the

victory through Jesus and because he is

sitting at your throne that we are able

to sit at Jesus throne if we overcome.

if we have the victory through Jesus,

through your um help, Lord, that you

will accompany us. You will not abandon

us and you will maintain our peace and

our joy despite the chaos of the world

around us. Lord, we want to ask a

special blessing on each person here,

each of the homes represented here. We

know some of us are suffering. We're

going through some difficulties, but we

want to trust in you, Lord, that you

have great plans for us, and you are

sending your son, Jesus, to rescue us

and take us home. We are not of this

world, and we look forward to going

home. We ask these things in Jesus

precious name. Amen.
