  1. On Palm Sunday, we're going to continue on in our series in the

  2. book of Matthew. We are in Chapter 9 now.

  3. We've made it. Through Chapter 8 last week.

  4. But chapter 8 and 9 we have been focusing on the miracles of

  5. Jesus. Matthew wrote these down in this

  6. way chronologically or or in a way that many stories are lumped

  7. and. Piled together because that's

  8. what the way the holy. Spirit told him to write it,

  9. but. But there's a.

  10. Reason that we need to pay attention to each.

  11. Story because it's all. Revealing to us salvation.

  12. Who? Christ.

  13. Is how how Christ has. Come to save.

  14. People and so today specifically.

  15. We're in Matthew Chapter 9 one through 7 and I've titled the

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  16. message Getting saved out of. Worked, works based religion.

  17. Now, many of you when you hear the word religion, there's

  18. usually a negative connotation to it, right?

  19. Like. We we think, oh, religion is man

  20. made and and you've. Probably said this before I have

  21. said this. Before that, Christianity isn't

  22. about religion, it's about a relationship, right?

  23. You don't have to raise your hand if you said that.

  24. I know what we mean when we say. That but we.

  25. Also have to understand that the word religion in and of itself

  26. isn't a bad word it it just means devotion.

  27. Religion is an outward expression of our.

  28. Faith. And it's an.

  29. It can be ordered and organized because.

  30. If we look at scripture. The Bible does make it.

  31. Clear that God is. Particular, and he does care.

  32. About. How we come to him and how we

  33. live. And there are certain commands

  34. and and and laws and yes, there is also grace and forgiveness.

  35. And we come to. Christ as we are, but.

  36. But he's doing a work in US and conforming us to something.

  37. There is truth to follow. So religion in and of itself is

  38. not a bad word. The word is used several.

  39. Times in the New Testament in James chapter one verse 26 it

  40. says if anyone thinks he's religious and does not bridle

  41. his tongue but. Deceives his heart this.

  42. Person religion is worthless, religion that is pure and

  43. undefiled. Before God the Father is this to

  44. visit. Orphans and widows in their

  45. affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world, that's

  46. not a bad thing. There's a, there's got.

  47. To be an organized way in which not only we come to the.

  48. Lord, but but that we also live our.

  49. Lives so that we can grow in our faith and that's what the word

  50. really means is a devotion. What is our devotional time look

  51. like? How?

  52. Are we devoted to the? Lord, how is it organized?

  53. It's a good thing that we have organized church that we have,

  54. we meet at a certain time where everybody can be like, I can be

  55. there at that time and, and we can do this and we can do that.

  56. And it ends at this time. And hopefully the preacher does

  57. end on time, you know, so that we can get out for lunch.

  58. The problem with religion happens when you start adding

  59. people to it, though. When you add people, when you

  60. add men, corrupt men who are sinful, and all human beings are

  61. sinful. We're all imperfect in nature,

  62. and we have If you're a Christian, you have two natures.

  63. You want to follow God with one of one part of your nature, but

  64. then you want to follow your own desires.

  65. That's called your flesh. You do that and there's this war

  66. in US. And so when you add these

  67. imperfect men and women to religion, now you have corrupt

  68. systems, and now you have systems.

  69. Which which is probably what? You think of when we say the

  70. word religion is people trying to control.

  71. Access to God. And that's what I mean when we

  72. say works based religion, because Christianity is

  73. different from any other religion out there in the world.

  74. We are saved by grace. Alone, through faith alone and

  75. Christ alone, we do nothing on our own merit.

  76. That song that we were seeing singing is explaining that we

  77. don't come to Christ with our own works.

  78. Nothing. I bring only to the cross of

  79. Christ. I cling.

  80. It's the work that he did. But when we are involved.

  81. With. Trying to carry on this religion

  82. that Christ started. We corrupt it.

  83. And so then what people have done is they've added.

  84. To scripture they've. Added to or misinterpreted the

  85. Bible, misinterpreted the Old Testament, misinterpreted what

  86. Jesus has said, and and and they.

  87. Say OK, Jesus is good, but we also got to do XY.

  88. And Z to get to heaven. We got to be worthy of his

  89. sacrifice. We've got to meet him halfway

  90. and you've got to keep this up in order to.

  91. Have the grace or to have. The gift, which makes zero sense

  92. logically. And there are workspace

  93. religions all. Out there that have it.

  94. Wrong and therefore even the atheists have a religion right

  95. everything is a devotion or an organized way of thinking about

  96. something and so why I've titled it today getting saved out of

  97. workspace religions because anybody who does get saved

  98. basically needs to get. Out of their way of.

  99. Thinking about how they. Are a good person.

  100. How they make it to God and really understand.

  101. How we're supposed. To come to the Lord.

  102. Through Jesus. And so I've got three points on

  103. our text today, and the first one.

  104. Is this if you're? Thinking about that person in

  105. your life that's like, man, this would be so good for them to

  106. hear. Or maybe you're like, yes, I'm

  107. finally going to learn how to talk to my neighbor or talk to

  108. my my coworker. Well, here's where I think it

  109. starts. If you want to get.

  110. People saved out of workspace. Religion, then you've.

  111. Got to have faith. That gets your friends to Jesus.

  112. Let's look at this first part of this text.

  113. It says. In Chapter 9, verse one and two

  114. and getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own

  115. city and behold, some people brought to him a paralytic lying

  116. on a bed, and when Jesus saw their.

  117. Faith, he said to the paralytic take.

  118. Heart, my son, your sins are forgiven.

  119. Hey, a little bit of context. We.

  120. Over the last several weeks have talked about where Jesus is He's

  121. been. Around the Sea of Galilee, he's

  122. doing his ministry all around. The Sea of Galilee He crossed

  123. over to the other side. Through a storm, he challenged

  124. the disciples faith on the other side.

  125. Last week we talked about. He met some demons there.

  126. He cast the demons into. Pigs and it's a crazy story.

  127. You should read that go. Listen to the sermon last.

  128. Week. But now.

  129. It says that they're. Getting back into the boat and

  130. going. Across to the other side.

  131. Again and came to his own city and we know from context.

  132. That. Before he came over, he was

  133. staying with. Peter, where he healed his.

  134. Mother-in-law, we looked at that.

  135. So, so the house. That they're in now is back at.

  136. Peter's house with his. Family and his mother-in-law

  137. and. Jesus is.

  138. Preaching there, he's teaching and.

  139. There are all these people. That are pressing around.

  140. He's become extremely famous because not not, not only.

  141. Because of his. His.

  142. Preaching and teaching that is contrary to the religious.

  143. Leaders of the day. He's also proving who he.

  144. Is and proving what he's saying is true and worth listening to

  145. by doing miracles and casting out demons and healing people

  146. who are sick and. And so that's.

  147. Kind of the context here and and it's not in, not.

  148. All these details are. In Matthew.

  149. So we have to go. To Mark's version to get a

  150. little. Bit of the fuller.

  151. Story here so mark chapter. 2. It says and when he returned to

  152. Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home

  153. and many were gathered together so that there was no more room,

  154. not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to

  155. them, and they came bringing to him a.

  156. Paralytic carried by 4. Men, and when they could not get

  157. near him. Because of the crowd, they.

  158. Removed the roof above him and when they had made an opening

  159. they let down. The bed.

  160. On which the paralytic lay. So the fuller.

  161. Picture from Mark. Is is.

  162. That this is that famous story. Maybe you've heard it.

  163. Before of the. Friends lowering down their

  164. paralytic friend from the roof because there was no room inside

  165. of this house. As he was preaching.

  166. To the word, to them. It's such an interesting

  167. experience, you know to. To think of these guys's faith

  168. was was that is that if I could just.

  169. Get my friend to. Jesus that a miracle could.

  170. Happen and that's what I'm talking about in my.

  171. My first point is that. Their faith is what Jesus.

  172. Is is somewhat amazed by and he's moved.

  173. By that they would press through.

  174. And and go through all this action to get up on top of the

  175. roof. I mean, it's not telling us how

  176. hit they got him up on the roof. Maybe there's stairs that go up

  177. to the? Roof a lot of times in.

  178. Israel there are there are flat roofs.

  179. That you can go up and walk on and there are.

  180. Stairs to get up there. But anyway, they've got him on a

  181. stretcher and they're taking them up there and they decide

  182. we're going to just. Cut right through here.

  183. And you know, if that was my home, I'd.

  184. Probably be you know. A little bit angry, right?

  185. If it was at church. You know, and they're like, man,

  186. I need to get somebody to Jesus. You know, I'd say there's quite

  187. a. Few empty seats like you didn't

  188. need to. Do that, but here it's.

  189. Jam packed, you got hundreds, if not, if not, you know thousands

  190. surrounding the house. It would be crowded around.

  191. Jesus, but the thing. Here I want to focus on is

  192. their. Faith, their faith.

  193. Was willing. To do whatever it took.

  194. To get them this man in front of Jesus.

  195. Now you and I cannot believe. For another person.

  196. So let's. Not get that mixed up.

  197. I can have all the faith in the world, but that ain't getting my

  198. spouse, my kids, my friends, my coworkers to heaven.

  199. They have to have. Their own personal relationship

  200. and devotion to Jesus Christ. Faith in Him alone, right?

  201. Everyone has to have that faith moment.

  202. But it does work. God works this way.

  203. Though God uses other people, He uses us.

  204. To make sure his message. Gets across to other people or

  205. to. To make sure that we we get them

  206. in front of someone who can deliver the message.

  207. You see? That's what's going on here.

  208. Jesus is. Preaching the word of God and we

  209. don't have now. Jesus physically here at church.

  210. OK, but spiritually speaking, he.

  211. Is with us. When we gather, but even.

  212. Probably. More in line or more in context

  213. when we. Preach the word of God.

  214. Jesus is speaking to us. When we.

  215. Read the Word of God. When we sing the word of God,

  216. when we hear. It out loud this is.

  217. Jesus talking to us now I'm not saying all of my words

  218. specifically, especially when I tell my.

  219. Stories and stupid jokes are. God, So don't get that wrong.

  220. I'm not a prophet. There's no such thing as a

  221. prophet anymore. I work for a nonprofit

  222. organization. You know, we don't believe in

  223. prophets anymore. But the word of God preached is

  224. as if God is speaking. To your heart and your soul.

  225. When it is done truthfully and accurately.

  226. Now there's a lot of false. Preaching.

  227. We'll get to that later. So then.

  228. How does it work we? In somehow, some way, need to be

  229. desperate to get our friends and family in front of Jesus.

  230. Meaning get them to church, get them to a hearing of some

  231. preaching or. Bring Jesus.

  232. To them by expounding on scripture.

  233. Yourself. Learning it from church,

  234. learning it in your discipleship groups, and then being able to.

  235. Read these words. And tell the people and even

  236. praying you can intercede for another person by praying and

  237. saying. Lord, I'm trying to get.

  238. This person to you and obviously God.

  239. Is is everywhere all? At once and so.

  240. But you're you're. You're you're.

  241. Coming to God on their. Behalf that's.

  242. What these guys are doing, this guy could not get there on his

  243. own. People need other people to lead

  244. them to Jesus and to be desperate.

  245. To do so. So my question is, do we have?

  246. That type of faith do we think the power of the preached word

  247. of God. Can change his soul.

  248. Do we? Pray with enough faith to

  249. believe that God can save a Sinner as he saved.

  250. US because that is the way that it works.

  251. Romans 10/17, one of my favorite.

  252. Verses that I always have to go back to is that.

  253. When we're thinking about how. Does God save people like?

  254. We know it's through the crucifixion and faith.

  255. Like. Faith in Christ and Him dying

  256. for our sins. That's how He.

  257. Saves people, but how does it work?

  258. In time. Well, God uses something and

  259. it's. Called a call.

  260. Before someone repents and believes they have to be.

  261. Called they have to hear the word.

  262. Nobody just believes out of nowhere, not hearing anything

  263. that's not. How God does it?

  264. Even if there was some kind of supernatural working where God.

  265. Was was. Leading a person or you've heard

  266. sometimes that you know, maybe in the Middle East or in Muslim

  267. countries that they get dreams they're not necessarily getting

  268. saved in the dream, but they're getting they're getting drawn

  269. and pulled to go listen to. The word preached out loud.

  270. And listen to someone who can explain it to them.

  271. This is how it works. This is biblically how it.

  272. Works, and I know that there are some people who might disagree.

  273. With that but this? Is where I come back.

  274. To this verse. Romans 10/17 So faith comes from

  275. hearing and hearing. Through the word of Christ, this

  276. is how faith. Comes about.

  277. God does it this way. It has to have a call.

  278. Again, I I I make fun of this quote by Saint Francis of Assisi

  279. who says share the Gospel and if.

  280. If possible, use words. Well, that's ridiculous.

  281. And he's talking about. Do good works out.

  282. There in the world and maybe. People will see Christ.

  283. In you but no. It just doesn't work that way

  284. without the the audible call. Nobody's going to see it, man.

  285. You know that Christian really takes.

  286. Care of their yard. Really.

  287. Well, they must know Jesus, you know.

  288. Or look at look. You know, look at.

  289. Look at how they drive. The speed limit all the time

  290. down our Rd. It might help that they know

  291. you're a Christian and they see that you.

  292. Live a a godly life. But it's not enough to get them

  293. saved. They need to hear, do you have

  294. enough faith to share with them? And again, it doesn't have to be

  295. our own. Our own.

  296. Words. And that's why.

  297. I always tell people, what should I say?

  298. To someone and it's like. Well, there's all these words.

  299. All you got to do is just try to.

  300. Open it up and like. Oh, Jesus said this.

  301. Here and read. This because the word does the

  302. work. That's the other way it works is

  303. that God uses. His own word to bring about that

  304. faith. Isaiah 5511 So shall my word.

  305. Be that goes out. From my mouth it shall not

  306. return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose

  307. and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

  308. Not a word. Falls to.

  309. The ground without God having. Used it for its purpose.

  310. Now, people will reject. We know that probably most of

  311. the time, but and we know that God is sovereign and, and and

  312. it's not just by humans own capability for them to

  313. understand these things that they come to faith.

  314. But we must understand that people come to faith by a call,

  315. and that comes from us having enough faith to get our friends.

  316. To Jesus, who, by the way, is the word of God.

  317. Made flesh. There's so much that what that

  318. means by the way and I can't get to it but.

  319. The word of God. He is the communication

  320. physically from God to us that we could comprehend.

  321. He became human. The word of God is.

  322. Something that you should. Revere that you should have

  323. respect for that. You should believe that.

  324. There's power in the word. A quote.

  325. That might help us understand this from John Calvin, he says.

  326. We owe to scripture. The same reverence that we owe

  327. to. God, because it has proceeded.

  328. From him alone and has nothing belonging to man mixed with it

  329. this. Is what you would call.

  330. Comes from the doctrine of. Scripture is that all scripture

  331. is God. Breathed.

  332. And it was. It was written down.

  333. As the Holy. Spirit carried along men to

  334. write it down. It's perfect.

  335. It's not like some of God's ideas, some of man's ideas, and

  336. we mixed. It together.

  337. No. This is all God's.

  338. Truth being controlled when it was written, so much so that

  339. there are no errors, do. We have that type of faith.

  340. In. God's Word that we would read

  341. it. To them, say it to them, invite

  342. them to come and hear it. And I'll tell you what, there's

  343. a great opportunity next week. Easter, by the way, a lot of

  344. people for. Some reason, and maybe you were

  345. one of those. Maybe you came to faith.

  346. Because you started. To come and come into church on

  347. Easter. But people.

  348. Come to church on. Christmas and Easter, we call

  349. them creasters, you know, and they do that, you know, I don't

  350. know, out of some kind of like maybe religious obligation, it's

  351. been built into their, you know, kind of culture or history,

  352. family history. They come on Christmas and

  353. Easter and that's. That's why we do.

  354. We make a big. Deal of Easter?

  355. Well, most. Importantly, because what it

  356. really is is Resurrection Day. Jesus rose from the dead on a

  357. Sunday and one day. A year we celebrate.

  358. That around the time that that we think it possibly could have

  359. happened on the calendar and it's OK.

  360. To celebrate those types of holidays.

  361. But the other reason is that we know that.

  362. There's a lot of people that got God uses this for people that

  363. are lost that I. I can't tell you all the reasons

  364. why people are coming to church on that day.

  365. Maybe they. Got dragged to church.

  366. And they didn't want to go, maybe.

  367. They're there because they're desperate.

  368. Maybe it's because the friend brought them, but that.

  369. Could be you do? We have enough faith to invite

  370. them. Secondly, we need to in order to

  371. help people. Get saved out of workspace.

  372. Religion because we need to. Realize that false.

  373. Religion minimizes Jesus and we need to be diligent about

  374. knowing the true. Jesus so that.

  375. We can warn them of the false teachings about him.

  376. It goes on and says and behold, some of the scribes said to

  377. themselves, this man is blaspheming.

  378. But Jesus, knowing their hearts, said, Why do you think evil in

  379. your hearts? Jesus has.

  380. Come to his own people. Mind you, the Jewish faith was

  381. in the beginning. Set up by God, He chose a

  382. people. To represent him to the.

  383. World and he had told. Them time and time again, I'm

  384. I'm coming. Even though you reject my

  385. prophets and and kill them, I'm coming.

  386. Finally, myself. I'm coming.

  387. The sun is coming, the Messiah is coming, and he will.

  388. Set all things right, he. Will come.

  389. To forgive you of your. Sins and they've missed it,

  390. they've missed it. They've missed his mercy and

  391. compassion. His.

  392. Power the religious people. Reject him for not fitting into

  393. their made-up system. Because what did they do?

  394. They even corrupted the system that God established.

  395. They. Corrupted it, did you know?

  396. That the Bible has 6. 113 Old Testament laws in command.

  397. Some of those things are moral, some of them are ceremonial,

  398. some of them. Are civil, we say.

  399. Definitely the moral commands. Still.

  400. Still. Transferred to the New

  401. Testament, the ceremonial ones. Christ fulfilled those the

  402. civil. Ones there's some good

  403. principles in there, but don't. Fully apply to us what the

  404. Pharisees. Did of Judaism was add thousands

  405. of laws on top of these 613 laws.

  406. Because they they. Wanted to make sure that they

  407. never broke any of. God's laws so.

  408. They made-up their own way of being protected from breaking

  409. God's laws, and maybe that starts from the right.

  410. Heart, right? But that's where.

  411. Legalism comes from it's like. OK, God's Word says this, but

  412. we're going to take it further or God says this.

  413. And we're going to. But we're going to say.

  414. Oh, that's not a big deal. There's two sides to this.

  415. Thing with religions that minimize Jesus, it's overdoing

  416. it with legalism and under under preaching repentance and

  417. following the Lord's commands. Anyway, they call this guy.

  418. They call Jesus a blasphemer. Because they reject that that he

  419. has the. Power to forgive sins, if you if

  420. you remember. He had just said.

  421. The the crazy thing is about this story is they bring this

  422. guy on the the. Cot to.

  423. Jesus, and instead of Jesus healing him right there.

  424. What did he? Say, he said, my son, your sins

  425. are forgiven. Now, you can only imagine what's

  426. going on in everybody's head because they might, you know,

  427. some of them did believe that he was the Messiah, and probably.

  428. Got it. A lot of people were like, what

  429. does? That mean, you know, I was

  430. coming here for a healing. I was coming here.

  431. For you to do. Something for me and you're

  432. telling me my sins are forgiven? The Pharisees are like.

  433. Whoa, wait a minute. They know that this has

  434. implications. To it because later we'll we'll

  435. see that it. Says only God can forgive sins.

  436. But they're they're. Saying he's a blasphemer.

  437. Why? Because blasphemy means to

  438. slander or revile, to speak in an irreverent or impious manner.

  439. To speak. Lightly or profanely about

  440. sacred things. And in this instance, if Jesus

  441. wasn't God. He would be guilty of.

  442. Blasphemy of of basically bringing God down to his own

  443. level, speaking lightly of it or profanely of it, reviling God,

  444. abusing the holiness and. Glory of God.

  445. By making it common. And that's so, as I said.

  446. There are examples on both. Sides of this of how?

  447. Religion. Either is too LAX or too

  448. legalistic. We're we're either irreverent.

  449. And we think it's, you know. Jesus.

  450. Jesus is good with. Everything I do in my life and

  451. he loves me and he doesn't want me to change anything, do

  452. anything. I don't need to even look into

  453. my own heart. I don't even need to agree with

  454. sin, but sin is sin as long as I just mentally.

  455. Have this. Ascent of who Jesus is and never

  456. change anything and nothing ever happens in my life and I

  457. continue to sin nonstop and feeling no remorse that's OK and

  458. that's. The type of Jesus.

  459. That some people preach that. It's.

  460. There's no forsaking sin. There's no following after

  461. Christ. There's no joining in with His

  462. mission and what He's doing with His Church on earth.

  463. There's no. There's no loving him back and

  464. we know that. That's just erroneous and.

  465. I would say that our. Country and all over the.

  466. World there are churches that to.

  467. Try to reach more people and these what I'd call seeker

  468. sensitive. Churches to try to.

  469. Reach more people They really. Leave a lot of stuff.

  470. Out they really just won't say a lot of the things we have been

  471. walking verse by verse through Matthew and what I've found.

  472. Is Jesus. Is a pretty intense guy, he is.

  473. He's also more loving, compassionate, gracious, kind,

  474. and powerful than you could ever imagine.

  475. But he also. Challenges and when you walk

  476. through. The word verse by verse.

  477. You're not leaving anything out, you get to.

  478. Hear all that God has for you. You get to hear the whole

  479. counsel of God. But but there are churches where

  480. it's like. We're going to jump from.

  481. Topic to topic. And we're going to do the things

  482. that we believe. The.

  483. Seekers, Not even the believers. But the seekers?

  484. How can we get them in and fill these seats?

  485. How can we? What's interesting to them?

  486. You know, let's do. A pop psychology series.

  487. You know, and then. Let's do oh, this.

  488. One drives me nuts. Is the.

  489. At the movie series. There are a lot of churches that

  490. it's like they take they'll. The newest movie that's out,

  491. we're going to do a sermon on the plot line of the movie and

  492. sometimes. They dress up like the.

  493. Superhero in the movie they. Got their whole their whole

  494. stage. Is this background of this this

  495. movie right? I could go on and on.

  496. This is a pet peeve of mine. If you didn't know, that's the

  497. that's irreverent. Honestly, you're bringing all

  498. this common worldly stuff in and you don't believe the first

  499. point that it's. The word of God that saves

  500. people. And that it's if you just get

  501. them to Jesus, not all this pop psychology, not just kind of

  502. bait and switching them. That's not how it works if you

  503. believed in the word. Of God you would give.

  504. Them the word of God and if you had a.

  505. Proper fear of the Lord or respect of the Lord you'd be.

  506. Like I'm going to do this in in in a in a.

  507. Reverent way by the way. You know, one of the things that

  508. on our website we we came up with these kind of three phrases

  509. reverent. Worship Biblical.

  510. Teaching faithful community. And that's what we mean when we

  511. say. Reverent worship is like we.

  512. Want to and we want to. Keep it biblical, we.

  513. Want to keep it within? God's will we.

  514. Want to worship in the ways that he's?

  515. Said to I don't want to keep taking artistic license to the

  516. the. Extremes of now I.

  517. Look just like the world. I do not believe.

  518. That that's what God's will is for His church.

  519. We are to look like separate to some degree, weirdos.

  520. You know, to the unbelievers. Like boy, they're weird.

  521. You know. They follow the laws they have.

  522. Well manicured I'm just kidding that's not that is not it right

  523. it's no they they don't they don't join in with in the jokes

  524. at work and and they. They have their.

  525. Schedules laid out so much so that they they make.

  526. Sure that corporate worship is a.

  527. Priority and they're always meeting and they're always

  528. studying the Bible and they're always praying and they're

  529. praying at meals and it's like. These people are just weird.

  530. You know, to the world. Right.

  531. That's a good thing, because we don't care what the world.

  532. Thinks I care what God. Thinks even more so than trying

  533. to reach people with some bait and switch tactic now.

  534. The other side. Is the legalism adding all kinds

  535. of things that God did not say? That's where we have.

  536. A lot of false religions, right? Every other religion that you

  537. can think of. That we're close to is the fault

  538. of works. Based religion, meaning that

  539. we've we've added now these. Extra steps to get to the Lord.

  540. We've got to not only follow the Bible.

  541. But this other book, this. Other book.

  542. And then we've got to believe that.

  543. The Pope or the prophet or the. President and his writings are.

  544. Equal to scripture. And, and and bring all that into

  545. account and that's all keeping people.

  546. Separated from God as well. False.

  547. Religion minimizes Jesus, and it minimizes them on both sides.

  548. If you think you. Have to work your way or follow

  549. the law to get to Jesus. Or join a religion and do all of

  550. its sacraments to be worthy. What are you doing?

  551. You are minimizing Christ on the cross.

  552. You're saying that he's not enough.

  553. You're saying that he's not powerful enough, he's not big

  554. enough, and that his death wasn't sufficient.

  555. And far be it from any of us to ever.

  556. Think that or say that that's. Blasphemy.

  557. That is heresy. Jesus is enough.

  558. We need to get in front of Him, hear his words, understand how

  559. big. He truly is.

  560. He is God, everybody. Wants to become just a.

  561. A teacher these days, though, I've.

  562. Noticed it you know you're you're on on YouTube or

  563. Instagram or Facebook and even athletes and actors and famous

  564. people, they might all of a sudden.

  565. Get a taste for Jesus. And although they're not

  566. qualified because they barely know anything, they're spending

  567. minutes or hours doing videos about teaching Christians.

  568. What the Bible? Says and how to live.

  569. Everybody wants to be a teacher. Everybody wants and this.

  570. Is where Where? We're scared of religion.

  571. We're like. I don't have to follow anybody

  572. or do anything. I can just me and my Bible.

  573. You know, me and my Bible go up to the mountains and I, I don't.

  574. Meet a lot of people that take their Bible.

  575. Up to the mountains, but me and my Bible alone and I don't need

  576. church, I don't need any organized way of devotion.

  577. And what ends up happening is they themselves fall into false

  578. teaching and all kinds of beliefs because they're not

  579. believing that God. Did leave a structure, He did

  580. leave. A church he did leave.

  581. His body here on earth and there is a whole.

  582. History of the Church that we can go.

  583. Back and look at and we can say here's where they got it wrong.

  584. Here, here and here, and here's. Where they fought bad teaching.

  585. Here and here, and we don't have to reinvent the wheel.

  586. James 31. Not many of you should become

  587. teachers, my brothers, for you know that.

  588. We who teach will be. Judged with a greater strictness

  589. and Jude 110 tells us. That false teachers will be

  590. judged in. Hell, Jude 110 But these people

  591. blasphemy all that they do not understand blasphemy, and they

  592. are destroyed. By all that they.

  593. Like unreasoning, animals understand instinctively they

  594. are. Outside of the church, but.

  595. Wanting to make their way in, maybe even start their own

  596. church, right? But Jesus is who we.

  597. Follow and we do it his. Way.

  598. In Mark's version of the story. Of this passage it says.

  599. Now some of the scribes were sitting there questioning in

  600. their hearts, why does this man? Speak like that he is.

  601. Blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God

  602. alone? You know what?

  603. They're partially right here. Only God can forgive sins.

  604. Now they're wrong about calling Jesus a blasphemer, but only God

  605. can forgive sins, and that's. What this story is about, that

  606. is what this story is about, Christ has the authority to

  607. raise up. Sinners from spiritual paralysis

  608. will go on in the passes. For which is easier to say your.

  609. Sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk, but that you may know

  610. that the son of man has authority on earth to forgive

  611. sins he then said to the. Paralytic rise Pick up your.

  612. Bed and go home and he rose and went home, and when the crowd.

  613. Saw it, they were afraid. And they glorified God, who had

  614. given such authority to men, So he in these.

  615. First parts of these verses. He's he's almost reasoning with

  616. them like. Why are you?

  617. Why are? You confused.

  618. Why do you have this? Wrong.

  619. Which is easier for? Somebody can just say your sins

  620. are forgiven. Like what's the big deal with

  621. that? Compared to what I'm about to

  622. do, that's what he's saying. I'm not just saying I have.

  623. The authority. I will prove it to you.

  624. And he's a man of action and of proof, not just of talk.

  625. And he makes this man. Rise.

  626. He is proving that he is God in the flesh, mercifully.

  627. And by the way, just so you know, this guy does absolutely

  628. nothing. Here's where we get.

  629. Rid of workspace religion. Here he did nothing.

  630. His friends. Brought him on a cot and we

  631. don't have any. Record of the guy.

  632. Saying a single thing. He didn't come and say let me

  633. pass the test, Jesus, let me say this magical incantation in the

  634. right formula and hope you'll save me.

  635. It doesn't. Say, he said a single.

  636. Thing. But Jesus looks at him

  637. mercifully and wants to bless him by forgiving his sins, which

  638. is more important than healing him, but using him as an

  639. example, showing he has the authority to even do so.

  640. And this man represents. Our state.

  641. You want to get saved. Out of a works based.

  642. Religion or get saved at all. Then you have to come to Christ.

  643. However you got there. With bringing nothing with 0.

  644. Ability to do anything because that's what this this guy's

  645. picture. Is meant for.

  646. Us to see this is called. Doctrinally, total inability.

  647. Ephesians 21 says that. All people.

  648. All people. Are dead in their trespasses and

  649. sins, the Psalms. Tells us that we were.

  650. Born in our iniquity and sin. We are spiritually dead.

  651. And no one, no one can even reason their way to believing

  652. who. Jesus is.

  653. It is a miracle. It is a gift.

  654. In fact, I love this verse. John 644 No one can come to me

  655. unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him

  656. up on the last day. You see?

  657. What's going on here is this guy has nothing that he can do.

  658. For the Lord. No qualifications, basically

  659. useless. Now what?

  660. Does that do to yours? And my pride, did you come here

  661. today thinking, you know what, I could I have some things to

  662. offer to Jesus if I add myself to what's going on here?

  663. I mean he. Could really use.

  664. Me, you know I, I. Could really do some great

  665. things for the. Lord, and then He'll have favor

  666. on me, and then maybe if I do it well enough, I can get to

  667. heaven. But we know how.

  668. That track record works out is you start.

  669. With maybe some, well, intentions and then what

  670. happens? You just fail over and over

  671. again. And then what ends up happening

  672. and then you leave. You just never come back for a

  673. while. Just like you just feel.

  674. Guilty that you can't measure up, you can't do the things

  675. that. You thought you could do for the

  676. Lord just. Rest, though, in the fact that

  677. he's not asking anything of you. As far as it goes with.

  678. Salvation. He's doing it all.

  679. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws.

  680. One of my favorite analogies of this was by Vodi Baucom, who?

  681. Said it's like this. You know we think of salvation.

  682. As we're out there. Drowning in the the ocean,

  683. that's our sin. We're in our sin and Jesus comes

  684. along and he throws a. Life raft or a life preserver

  685. and he's like just. Swim to it, you know, just swim

  686. to it. Grab it.

  687. And once you grab. It that's.

  688. You doing the work of repentance and faith and and and and trying

  689. to understand and study and all of that and if you just.

  690. Will do those. Things then you will be.

  691. Saved. But then he says, but Vodi.

  692. Says this, but here's the. Problem Dead men don't grab

  693. things we can't even reach. For the life preserver.

  694. This paralytic cannot even reach out his hand to Jesus.

  695. That was you and me. We can't come here and say that

  696. I was so humble and I was so ready and I did this, this and

  697. this and and now Jesus has mercy on me and I'm so thankful to him

  698. and me. That's not how it works, however

  699. you came to. Him.

  700. It was a miracle. It probably happened because

  701. somebody was had enough faith in Jesus and the Word.

  702. Of God that they. Told you about him and.

  703. Drug you to church or God? Drew you somehow to.

  704. Hear the word of. God and eventually out of

  705. nowhere, you're like, I understand.

  706. I never understood a single thing.

  707. It was all so terribly. Boring when I was a.

  708. Child or or this or that, but all of a.

  709. Sudden something flipped and it was like.

  710. Wow, I I heard every word you said, preacher.

  711. I can't believe it made sense and all the sudden you have

  712. conviction and. This is how God works by.

  713. Grace, you have been saved. I love how.

  714. Ephesians 2 goes on. It says but.

  715. God being rich in mercy. Because of the great love with

  716. which he loved. Us, even when we were dead in

  717. our. Trespasses.

  718. Made us alive together with Christ.

  719. When we were dead, He made. Us alive by his grace.

  720. And his mercy. He was saved by faith.

  721. And this is not of your own doing.

  722. It's a gift of God, not a result of works that no man may boast.

  723. This is what this. Story is pointing to and.

  724. Here's how. Luke 526 this all also in Luke

  725. and I just wanted to pull. This out as we close what how

  726. Luke's. Version ends the story.

  727. An amazement sees them all and they glorified God and we're

  728. filled with awe, saying we have seen extraordinary things today.

  729. Let me tell you this, when you see a Christian, a real true

  730. Christian, you've seen an extraordinary miracle walking

  731. you and me. When you look at your own life,

  732. you can say you know what I am a miracle.

  733. I was as good as dead. I was like this paralytic.

  734. I bring nothing, I have nothing to offer, and yet God rose me

  735. up. He revived my soul.

  736. I want to follow Him now, and I don't do it perfectly.

  737. And I slip and I fall, but the difference?

  738. Is is that I love? Him and I need him.

  739. I'm not concerned about doing life my own way anymore.

  740. I want to find out how he wants me to live and I'm not going to

  741. follow the false teachings I'm going to be.

  742. Aware of who Jesus is so. That I can fight against it.

  743. And that's our whole Christian life as we're spent.

  744. We're trying to fight sin, find out who Jesus is more and more,

  745. grow closer to him, and trusting though that he holds us in the

  746. palm of his hand, we are safe and we are going to make it to

  747. heaven. This is an extraordinary thing.

  748. Do not lose the passion, don't lose the excitement, don't lose

  749. the the miracle of your own salvation.

  750. Allow that. To be the fuel for how you

  751. follow. Him.

  752. The rest of your life close with this.

  753. Get your friends to Jesus next week and beyond.

  754. Get right. Doctrine so you can point out

  755. false religion that always minimizes the person and work of

  756. Jesus. Christ.

  757. Realize that only. God has the ability.

  758. And the authority to save sinners.

  759. And he does it. By the Spirit and through His

  760. Word, let's pray. Oh Lord, we are so thankful God

  761. that you. You reveal to us.

  762. Week in and week out, day in and.

  763. Day out, every hour. Your mercy, your kindness, Your

  764. love. For.

  765. Us, we are unworthy sinners, and yet you came and.

  766. Saved us by grace. We don't deserve it.

  767. We bring nothing. We have an inability or we had

  768. an inability to come to you. Thank.

  769. You, God, for those of us who are saved, who have placed

  770. their. Faith in Christ.

  771. That we have your. Spirit, and now we have an

  772. ability to follow you. Help us, God to do that.

  773. Help us to represent you out there in the world.

  774. With our. Actions and with our mouth.

  775. Help us to share the Word of God with.

  776. The people around us that need to hear it and believe have

  777. enough faith to know that it. Will be you and you.

  778. Alone that does the miracle in them, but you will use.

  779. Us, so use us, I pray. And Father, if there are any of

  780. those who are dead in their trespasses and sins, spiritually

  781. paralyzed, they don't know you. They've never.

  782. Understood. I pray you'd give them that

  783. ability. Now through the Holy.

  784. Spirit. And help them to trust in you,

  785. in Jesus name, Amen.
