No Greater Joy

[SPEAKER_01]: It's good to see you guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: My name's Cory, I'm one of the pastor's on staff.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a privilege to be up here to be with you this morning.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love family worship weekend.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you're new, this is like Melissa said earlier as a special rhythm for us.

[SPEAKER_01]: It happens once a year.

[SPEAKER_01]: I do love it though.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love having all of our kids in here.

[SPEAKER_01]: First through fifth graders that are with us this morning, we love you.

[SPEAKER_01]: Citizens' Church loves you.

[SPEAKER_01]: We love you.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a joy to get the point you towards life and Christ.

[SPEAKER_01]: Parents of those kids, we love you too.

[SPEAKER_01]: It is one of our favorite things to help you to sample your children, to help point them to the one place for life is found.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a beautiful privilege to come along side you and point them to Jesus together.

[SPEAKER_01]: The last three weeks that our churches you've seen through those videos have been really incredible.

[SPEAKER_01]: Get away camp happen, 200 students, 50 leaders, huge ups, big thank you to our student ministry team.

[SPEAKER_01]: Logan and Bianca, yes.

[SPEAKER_01]: Andrew, our new guy, Ryan, we love you guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much for spending so much time with our teenagers, your saints.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then City Campus last week, 320 plus kids and all of me of leaders, loving kids in this place.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's great, kids team, Melissa Sidney, Nikki, Matty, Taylor, Lauren, Ashley, we love you guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you guys are just build different, and we're really grateful.

[SPEAKER_01]: So what I'd like to do is this, before we get into our passage of today, if you are nearby one of our students or one of the kids from first to fifth grade in here, if they're okay with it, reach out, put a hand on a shoulder, I'm gonna pray for them, I wanna call upon like, Psalm 9-1, it says, I'll give thanks to the little with my whole heart, I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

[SPEAKER_01]: So we're just gonna pray for our next gen in the room, we'll jump into our passage to get a let's pray.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look out, we love you.

[SPEAKER_01]: We say, thank you God with our whole heart for the kids that you have afforded us, the children that you are letting us raise to no love, trust and obeyed Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look out, I pray you're blessing on each one of them God from the first greater to the senior and high school, just graduating this room.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look out, I pray that they would know life in Christ.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's no greater life than life in Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so God, we pray that over each one of them.

[SPEAKER_01]: We've got my every child in this room, no Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's the cry of citizens church.

[SPEAKER_01]: We long for our children to know you.

[SPEAKER_01]: So God, would you do that?

[SPEAKER_01]: We thank you, God, for loving them.

[SPEAKER_01]: And for doing a good work this last week, we praise you.

[SPEAKER_01]: Praise in Jesus' name.

[SPEAKER_01]: Amen.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you've spent more than 10 minutes deem scrolling on social media, you've probably run into one of those health and fitness accounts with the red X and the green check that says, eat this, not that.

[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what I'm talking about?

[SPEAKER_01]: You've seen these.

[SPEAKER_01]: Usually the big red X is over something that I love, like a big double bacon cheeseburger.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love a bacon cheeseburger, but then it says, the red X says, don't eat this.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's 1,400 calories.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's a green check mark next to it with like some bowl of tofu and cold cucumbers and kale, squeeze of lemon and pinch of sadness.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like sitting beside it saying, eat this.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you've seen that, you know what I'm talking about.

[SPEAKER_01]: One option looks appealing, you definitely taste great, but it ruins you for the rest of the day, the other requires some things from you, but actually gives you some life and some energy.

[SPEAKER_01]: When we open up,

[SPEAKER_01]: This closing book in John 3rd John, when we opened it up, it feels a bit like this.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're looking at two very different men that John was writing two and writing one writing about in Gaius and Daatrafi's one, was living in a manner worthy of imitation and pursuit in one, a lifestyle to be avoided at all costs.

[SPEAKER_01]: And when we hold these lives side-by-side, we see an unavoidable discrepancy.

[SPEAKER_01]: On one hand, there's a huge check mark over Gaius, a beautifully other-centered life of generosity and hospitality, leads to joy in the church, and more and more disciples being made.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then this massive extrovert tootrophies has self-centered life obsessed with prominence, a path that leads to slander, indivision, and pain, ultimately.

[SPEAKER_01]: These two men show us that the way we live out our lives, either builds up those around us, builds up the church or has the ability to tear her down.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so we'll spend the majority of our time looking at third John together with these two thoughts.

[SPEAKER_01]: The self-centered life leads to division and pain.

[SPEAKER_01]: and then the other center life leads to disciples enjoy.

[SPEAKER_01]: First, let's consider diatrophies, the self-centered life that leads to division and pain.

[SPEAKER_01]: Let me read to you kind of moving a little over halfway into the passage of verses nine and ten.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're John one, nine and ten says this.

[SPEAKER_01]: I've written something to the church, but diatrophies who likes to put himself first does not acknowledge our authority.

[SPEAKER_01]: So if I come, I'll bring up what he's doing,

[SPEAKER_01]: talking wicked nonsense against us and not content with that he refuses to welcome the brothers and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now, until now, a majority of the things that John has been addressing have been about, theological attacks, wrong beliefs about Jesus coming from outside the church in, but here he's addressing a threat that's on the inside.

[SPEAKER_01]: What we see happening with this manned autrophies,

[SPEAKER_01]: It's about like a slow, weak slumber in your house.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's fine to own a house, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: It's that leak under the sink.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's that drip behind the washing machine, or under the dishwasher that slowly drips until it explodes one day.

[SPEAKER_01]: Destroyers, everything, this is to atrophies.

[SPEAKER_01]: Slow drip of pride, rotting the church from the inside out.

[SPEAKER_01]: So who is this guy?

[SPEAKER_01]: We don't really know a lot about him other than what John is saying here.

[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know if he's like the pastor or some lay leader, but what's true is you don't necessarily a title to cause division in pain.

[SPEAKER_01]: Theologian John Stott talking about this man said, in history it's one of the first times what we see is called a church boss, treating the church like a game of monopoly.

[SPEAKER_01]: But if you look at verse 9, he gives us the core issue that this man dealt with.

[SPEAKER_01]: He said, he simply likes to put himself,

[SPEAKER_01]: First, consumed with prominence and seemingly operating with zero accountability and rejecting apostolic authority.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is what Scott said when thinking about this man.

[SPEAKER_01]: Self-love damages and weakens all relationships.

[SPEAKER_01]: The autobiography slander John, cold shouldered the missionaries, and excommunicated loyal believers.

[SPEAKER_01]: All because he loved him self.

[SPEAKER_01]: and wanted to have pre-immunits.

[SPEAKER_01]: Personal vanity still lies at the root of most ascensions in every local church today.

[SPEAKER_01]: This man, self-centered love, was wreaking havoc in the church, and that same heart posture still causes problems in the church today.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at verse 10, you can see then how his heart posture started to manifest itself in that church.

[SPEAKER_01]: The first thing was this malicious or slanderous speech.

[SPEAKER_01]: John said that he was talking nonsense against us.

[SPEAKER_01]: Using slander or gossip or destructive words, themes spoken against and scripture over a hundred times.

[SPEAKER_01]: Instead of it being more like Ephesians 4, instead of his words giving grace to the

[SPEAKER_01]: Second thing we see coming out of his life is he was separating God's people.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was kicking out anyone who would show hospitality to the messengers that John and his church had sent there to encourage the church in the first place.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was separating the church and treating it more like a local closed clubhouse.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you what it may be think of, maybe it's not really helpful for you, but it helped me.

[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember the movie Little Rascals?

[SPEAKER_01]: He men, women, haters club?

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit of what this feels like, ready to turn the house about her to a private kingdom or the only entry criteria where his personal preferences.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's the way he was treating the church.

[SPEAKER_01]: Beloved, it's a stark moment to have your name immortalized and scripture for something like this.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a stark and serious moment when I read this, I wondered what it was like for daot or fees if he was there when it was read aloud.

[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder how we responded, did he blush, did he back off, did he apologize?

[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder how we responded in that moment.

[SPEAKER_01]: This thought took me to the mirror to ask myself, how do I respond when my sin is exposed?

[SPEAKER_01]: What do I do when my pride is on display?

[SPEAKER_01]: Am I insisting on my own ways?

[SPEAKER_01]: Am I self-centered?

[SPEAKER_01]: A life-centered in-on-self brings no flourishing, not to me and not to the people around me.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a tiny, claustrophobic, short-lived kingdom to rule over and the result is pain and division.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is what was coming from his life.

[SPEAKER_01]: And reading these warnings about daotrophies made me think about a couple of the moments we see in the gospel in their days with Jesus and the disciples.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you were to go look in the book of Mark in chapter 9, there's this moment where the disciples are walking along the path with Jesus, who knowing what they were talking about the whole time, then when they get to the place they're going, ask them, what were you talking about?

[SPEAKER_01]: and they come to find out they were having this conversation, which was the greatest among them, then Jesus pulls him in and sits them down and turns their framework upside down and he said, if anyone would be first, he must be last and be a servant of all.

[SPEAKER_01]: Dautrafis wanted to be first in the exact same way as the disciples in this moment, but it was not so much with our friend Gaius.

[SPEAKER_01]: Hung the letter was written to in the first place.

[SPEAKER_01]: Let's take a look at his life, see the other centered life that leads to disciples enjoy.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at the first four verses of Third John.

[SPEAKER_01]: the elder to the beloved Gaius, who my love in truth.

[SPEAKER_01]: Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health as it goes well with your soul.

[SPEAKER_01]: For I rejoice greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth as indeed you're walking in the truth.

[SPEAKER_01]: I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

[SPEAKER_01]: When we read, excuse me, when we read, we're given a window into what's a very, excuse me, obviously personal relationship.

[SPEAKER_01]: John uses this word three to four times, depending on the translation you're reading out of, about this beloved dear friend.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now, we don't get a lot of the back story, we don't know what happened in a time back, but when John calls Gaias my child and blesses him with a kind of affection that he does, most scholars agree that the John was likely the person that led Gaias to life in Christ.

[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't just know things about Gaias or had heard about him.

[SPEAKER_01]: He remembered the day that Gaias's eyes were open to Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe around a fire, maybe over a meal, getting into enjoy time together,

[SPEAKER_01]: all of a sudden salvation.

[SPEAKER_01]: He had a direct hand in leading him in this and watching his love for Jesus deepened over the years.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I don't would never claim to be like the apostle John, but I know the joy that he's talking about in verse 4.

[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of years in student ministry has allowed me the unexpected blessing of getting to watch my kids grow up in Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: getting to watch my students become more and more like Jesus over the years.

[SPEAKER_01]: Last week, I had the blessing to go to a very beautiful funeral of a good and godly woman.

[SPEAKER_01]: Her son is a home group member, a home group leader here, a covenant member here in a former student of mine.

[SPEAKER_01]: I came in my way to my seat sat down with one of his friends who was also one of my students.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then after the service got to talk with several of my boys, former students of mine now well into adulthood after taking a moment to hear about their lives and their wives and their kids and get to encourage them and remembering our days together and seeing their love for Jesus now have me up in my fields.

[SPEAKER_01]: Tearing up, had the chance to Benedict each one of them, talk about how cool it is to see Christ and them and tell them literally said, it's an unexpected gift as I approach 50 to see you guys doing this.

[SPEAKER_01]: And one of them in this beautiful moment of clarity looked at me and he was dude.

[SPEAKER_01]: You're almost 50?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, dude, I'm almost 50.

[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a good moment.

[SPEAKER_01]: It was a good moment, guys, I've been able to eat great food with great people, go to cool sporting events, be able to travel a lot of the world, but there is no joy like gospel joy.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing like this.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing like getting to see your children, your spiritual children, your biological children, walk in the truth of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: So what was it?

[SPEAKER_01]: But guys was up to the brought so much joy to John and so much praise in their local church.

[SPEAKER_01]: Let's look at it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at verses five through eight.

[SPEAKER_01]: He says, beloved, it's a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church.

[SPEAKER_01]: You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.

[SPEAKER_01]: For they had gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles therefore, we ought to support people like these.

[SPEAKER_01]: that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

[SPEAKER_01]: During the late century traveling missionaries and teachers relied completely on the hospitality of local believers to provide lodging and food in order to advance the gospel of Jesus' care.

[SPEAKER_01]: John is praising Gaius for his generosity and welcoming and traveling workers for the gospel that he didn't even know.

[SPEAKER_01]: complete strangers that he offered them a place to stay and a place to be fed.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I love how John talks about it.

[SPEAKER_01]: He says, it's a faithful thing that you do.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is a faithful thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: And John says that he rejoiced because he's traveling missionaries came back to their church with the report of guys' life.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was a man who's greatest joy and greatest love was Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at the snapshot of him versus five through eight.

[SPEAKER_01]: We see that he was hospitable and generous, opening his home and his table and his wallet that the gospel might go forward.

[SPEAKER_01]: Even when he didn't know them.

[SPEAKER_01]: He was committed to the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_01]: Guyis didn't want the close clubhouse.

[SPEAKER_01]: He wanted the gospel to go forward and advance through his local church.

[SPEAKER_01]: He saw this as his personal responsibility to fund and fuel the mission of God where he was.

[SPEAKER_01]: he saw it as his responsibility.

[SPEAKER_01]: I like how Sam Elberg talks about it in his commentary.

[SPEAKER_01]: He said, for Gaius, their work was his work.

[SPEAKER_01]: It was shared.

[SPEAKER_01]: They were working together for the truth of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Church, look at these two men.

[SPEAKER_01]: Very different guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: One of the green checkmark, one of the big red eggs.

[SPEAKER_01]: One of the story of encouragement and admiration, another of warning and ammunition, guys.

[SPEAKER_01]: Love the truth enough to serve others.

[SPEAKER_01]: The autobiography's loved himself enough to oppose the truth.

[SPEAKER_01]: One lived a life that was self-centered and led to division and pain in the other.

[SPEAKER_01]: Other centered, leading to disciples and joy.

[SPEAKER_01]: But when we look at our own heart today,

[SPEAKER_01]: one are you.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's not the question.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's helpful, yes, to compare them, but it can also do something to our hearts.

[SPEAKER_01]: I can tell you it does something to my heart.

[SPEAKER_01]: If we're not careful, can read their John is nothing more than just a first-century report card.

[SPEAKER_01]: We look at guys and think, great, try harder.

[SPEAKER_01]: Be like guys, good.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're looking at dodge if he's gonna say, glad I'm not bad guy, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: But the letter is not about behavior modification.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's not a cosmic test to say, if you're like guys, you're good, and if you're like dodge if he's your toast.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's not what's happening right here.

[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want us to leave here today, puffed up with pride or crushed by failure if we're not like one of these men.

[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the life of the Christ follower does require some grit, okay?

[SPEAKER_01]: The antidote to heart-like diatrophies is not a white-nuckled effort.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's knowing, loving, and trusting Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's where things change, because if I'm honest, pieces of both these men live inside of me.

[SPEAKER_01]: There's days where I can see Jesus at work in my life, where I'm open-handed, and I'm generous, and I'm patient, and I'm kingdom-minded like Gaius, and I wish, church, I wish there were fewer days where my insecurity and pride led me to loudly or quietly even insist upon my own promise.

[SPEAKER_01]: John says that the Attrophies like to put himself first but the gospel reminds us that Christ alone deserves prominence and supremacy in our heart.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at what it says about him in Philippians chapter two, five through eight, have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not kind of quality with God a thing to be grasped.

[SPEAKER_01]: emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men, and being found in human form.

[SPEAKER_01]: He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

[SPEAKER_01]: Jesus, life and death, barrel and resurrection, gave spiritual orphans like us, a home where we could know the treasino bigot.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's what he did.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's what he gave to us.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is what Jesus did with his authority.

[SPEAKER_01]: He surrendered himself.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's just we don't change our lives by fixing our eyes and our performance, whether it be selflessness or selfishness instead, is by fixing our eyes in the beauty and selflessness of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: By asking Jesus to change our hearts and what comes out of them, when we confess in our pen of our self-centered heart, and then Jesus becomes our greatest joy, what will become then, what will happen then, is a beautifully other centered life.

[SPEAKER_01]: If you're looking at the end of our passage, look at verses 11 and 12.

[SPEAKER_01]: The last few verses of our passage, John does something really beautiful.

[SPEAKER_01]: John's offering, guys, and offering us a little help with this other centered life, a little support for this way of Jesus that we're supposed to be living in.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at the 11 and 12.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is beloved.

[SPEAKER_01]: Do not imitate evil, but imitate good.

[SPEAKER_01]: This other centered life.

[SPEAKER_01]: Whoever does good is from God, whoever does evil is not seen God.

[SPEAKER_01]: Demetrius, we see a third God now, has received a good testimony from everyone and from the truth itself.

[SPEAKER_01]: So we add also our testimony.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know that our testimony is true.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now what's true is we're all going to imitate somebody.

[SPEAKER_01]: In the room, there are a lot of first through fifth grade imitators.

[SPEAKER_01]: Watching you.

[SPEAKER_01]: Seeing how you live, copying your words, talking the way that you talk, loving the things that you love, we are all going to imitate and mimic someone.

[SPEAKER_01]: And as strangers that may seem, people like diatrophies can be incredibly whinsom and convincing.

[SPEAKER_01]: and so John addresses it.

[SPEAKER_01]: To keep guys from falling into the trap of imitating the wrong person, he briefly introduces a third man, Demetrius, who is likely the carrier of this letter and the hand that was handed to John and he says, imitate him.

[SPEAKER_01]: And these are the three things we see from me.

[SPEAKER_01]: He said, imitate this man, he's a good reputation, a proven Christian character.

[SPEAKER_01]: He loves the truth of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's coming out of his life, the things coming from his life,

[SPEAKER_01]: point to life in Christ.

[SPEAKER_01]: He comes from a good people.

[SPEAKER_01]: He's surrounded himself by a faithful community that has then sent him to go and encourage another one.

[SPEAKER_01]: So the question that races around my heart in verses 11 and 12 is who are you actively imitating?

[SPEAKER_01]: Who's disciple or you?

[SPEAKER_01]: You see, because what both men, both guys and diatrophies, both of these men and this letter need, they need the same thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: And we need the same thing to become more like Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: We all need a John that leads us to Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: We all need a demetrius to run alongside of us.

[SPEAKER_01]: We need this.

[SPEAKER_01]: I need this.

[SPEAKER_01]: And if you were at Getaway Camp as a leader, if you were here for City Camp as past week, you ran into a lot of people just like these two men.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're literally all over the place.

[SPEAKER_01]: Listen to this.

[SPEAKER_01]: You could see them in the 95 student leaders here giving of their life for a week.

[SPEAKER_01]: so that other people would see and know the kingdom of God.

[SPEAKER_01]: They were kingdom-minded.

[SPEAKER_01]: You see it in the people who took off work, they took vacation time to go to get away.

[SPEAKER_01]: It took vacation time to be here this last week.

[SPEAKER_01]: It was a beautiful thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: You see it in those who open handedly, provide a scholarship for children to be at these things.

[SPEAKER_01]: You see it in the leaders, humble enough to wear a ridiculous costume around all week to get a kid to laugh.

[SPEAKER_01]: We're having shaving cream thrown on their face.

[SPEAKER_01]: So a child can throw Cheetos at them in front of everybody.

[SPEAKER_01]: You see, guys, and you see Dimitrius.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's a faithful thing that you do church when your greatest love is Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Church, this is what it looks like to live this of their centered life.

[SPEAKER_01]: So as we get ready to leave this place today, let's refuse to build our own tiny, claustrophobic clubhouses.

[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, let's continue to practice this radical generosity and hospitality and love and kingdom-mindedness in the normal everyday rhythms of our life.

[SPEAKER_01]: I love getaway and I love city camp.

[SPEAKER_01]: But just as much of that is when you sit us in church, serve weekend and week out.

[SPEAKER_01]: So shameless plug, let's fill up Sidney's inbox.

[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I think I want to serve the kids on a Sunday morning.

[SPEAKER_01]: How do I do that?

[SPEAKER_01]: Let's send Bianca a lot of emails that says, hey Bianca, can you talk to me about how to be a huddle leader in student ministry?

[SPEAKER_01]: If you are in a home group, invite people in your house, on your street, invite people in.

[SPEAKER_01]: Church, this is a faithful thing that we get to do, and I've seen it all week long, and I'm hungry to see more of it.

[SPEAKER_01]: I pray that citizens church, we continue to be a people who have no greater joy than to no love, trust, no bay, Jesus.

[SPEAKER_01]: Let's pray.

[SPEAKER_01]: We need passages like this, we need letters like this, look at God.

[SPEAKER_01]: I hope the Holy Spirit would use, if it causes us to look at ourselves properly.

[SPEAKER_01]: Oh God, I pray that you would help us to see the self-centered heart that lives in us.

[SPEAKER_01]: Look at us, we consider Jesus now.

[SPEAKER_01]: Would you make us more and more like Him?
