  1. So these three S's are

  2. kind of symbolic in

  3. reminding us of the

  4. linkage that we have

  5. all the way back to

  6. the early church and

  7. some of the stuff that

  8. we do as a church.

  9. Isn't just because

  10. it's sort of a

  11. tradition or an

  12. idea or neat concept

  13. that popped up in

  14. the seventies, and

  15. so we, we do it.

  16. It really ties us

  17. all the way back

  18. to the early church

  19. Jesus's disciples

  20. and what they did

  21. and how they lived.

  22. These three S's over

  23. these three weeks want

  24. to kinda lay before

  25. us as we come outta

  26. summer and move into

  27. fall and some of the

  28. really neat things

  29. I think that God

  30. has on the horizon.

  31. Last week we talked

  32. about this Sunday

  33. worship gathering.

  34. How important it is

  35. as followers of Jesus

  36. Christ, that one of

  37. our priorities is

  38. this idea of Sunday

  39. worship gathering.

  40. Sunday, the first

  41. day of the week, as

  42. the early church kind

  43. of stepped outta the

  44. shadow of the Jewish

  45. Sabbath and into

  46. their identity as the

  47. ones who follow the

  48. risen Savior, who by

  49. no coincidence, rose

  50. on that Sunday, that

  51. first day of the week,

  52. and the early church

  53. gathered regularly.

  54. To worship, right,

  55. to express praise, to

  56. listen to the apostles

  57. teaching, to hear, to

  58. share, to break bread,

  59. to commune together.

  60. And they worshiped

  61. this risen savior,

  62. and they did that

  63. as a body together

  64. on a regular

  65. habitual practice.

  66. Right?

  67. And they said,

  68. don't neglect,

  69. don't forsake,

  70. don't abandon.

  71. The regular habit of

  72. gathering together as

  73. the body of Christ.

  74. Right?

  75. And this word

  76. gathering is such a

  77. beautiful picture that

  78. come together, right?

  79. To move from where

  80. you are to a place

  81. of gathering and.

  82. To be with

  83. right to come.

  84. And with that imagery

  85. of not being alone and

  86. not being isolated and

  87. not being separated,

  88. but instead being

  89. in relationship with

  90. God, his people in

  91. that space, it's

  92. part of why, uh,

  93. we had to razz my

  94. dad and Rusty for

  95. bailing today, right?

  96. Because we just

  97. got done talking

  98. about this

  99. important priority.

  100. And then where

  101. are those now?

  102. In fairness, they had

  103. that scheduled a long

  104. time ago, and, and

  105. it's also a good thing

  106. to remember this too.

  107. This isn't a

  108. legalistic approach

  109. to, uh, man, you

  110. should never, ever

  111. not be in church

  112. on a Sunday.

  113. Uh, that's, you can

  114. get to the extreme

  115. of recognizing

  116. that now that I've

  117. attended church

  118. and I have perfect

  119. attendance, I got

  120. all the stars in my

  121. little sticker chart.

  122. Heaven Cha-ching.

  123. Well, that's not

  124. actually how it

  125. works either, right?

  126. You remember that

  127. whole phrase like

  128. going to McDonald's

  129. doesn't make you a

  130. french fry, right?

  131. Going to church

  132. doesn't make

  133. you a Christian.

  134. You have to have

  135. a relationship

  136. with Jesus Christ.

  137. But when you have

  138. a relationship

  139. with Jesus Christ,

  140. the gathering of

  141. the body, the.

  142. Fellowship of

  143. the believers.

  144. That's an important

  145. thing and ought to

  146. be a priority for

  147. us, and we ought

  148. not to neglect that.

  149. And there's times

  150. where there's things

  151. going on and we're

  152. going places and

  153. we're on trips and

  154. there's events and

  155. activities, but as

  156. followers of Jesus,

  157. we need to really stop

  158. and say, what should

  159. my priorities be?

  160. Where does God fall?

  161. Where does the

  162. gathering of the body

  163. of Christ fall in

  164. that priority list?

  165. And ask some hard

  166. questions maybe

  167. about our scheduling

  168. and what we do.

  169. Well, today we're

  170. gonna talk about

  171. this second priority

  172. practice of the early

  173. church followers of

  174. Jesus for generations

  175. and its importance

  176. and significance.

  177. The early church made

  178. a priority of Sunday

  179. worship gathering.

  180. Absolutely.

  181. And they also called

  182. each other to be

  183. sagacious Sagacious.

  184. Now, I don't know if

  185. you know that word,

  186. but they called each

  187. other to this state of

  188. having or showing keen

  189. mental discernment

  190. and good judgment.

  191. I'm just kidding.

  192. It really?

  193. No, the crisis sent

  194. me this, this week

  195. and I was gonna put it

  196. up to mess with them.

  197. 'cause they were

  198. like, seriously, we

  199. guessed Sagacious.

  200. How did this happen?

  201. I had no idea what

  202. Sagacious meant.

  203. Thank you guys for

  204. trying, eh, not that

  205. we're doing today, but

  206. uh, I did think maybe

  207. it would be in good

  208. mental discernment

  209. and judgment to go

  210. ahead and share that

  211. word with you because

  212. now you've increased

  213. your vocabulary.

  214. And maybe we should

  215. be people who are

  216. sagacious, but,

  217. uh, it was worth it

  218. to me, just so you

  219. know, to watch Eric

  220. and there so puzzled

  221. wondering, did we

  222. seriously guess it?

  223. Good job guys.

  224. Thank you for

  225. that word.

  226. Appreciate that.

  227. No, not Sagacious,

  228. sorry, but

  229. be sagacious.

  230. It's wonderful,

  231. wonderful word.

  232. Um, anybody ever heard

  233. that word before?

  234. Just that moment

  235. right there together.

  236. Ryan, what are you

  237. teaching in your

  238. fifth grade class?

  239. What are you doing?

  240. These kids?

  241. Okay,

  242. let's talk later.

  243. 'cause I don't even,

  244. I don't even know what

  245. you're talking about.

  246. Sunday morning worship

  247. gathering a super

  248. important priority

  249. practice and the early

  250. church was heavily

  251. involved in this.

  252. Small group.

  253. Discipleship.

  254. This was a priority

  255. practice of the

  256. early church.

  257. In fact, we can go

  258. back to Acts chapter

  259. two in this section

  260. we call the Fellowship

  261. of Believers, and you

  262. won't be able to see

  263. all that up there.

  264. But the disciples,

  265. after following Jesus

  266. and choosing to come

  267. into faith in Jesus

  268. Christ, they devoted

  269. themselves to the

  270. teaching the apostles

  271. into fellowship,

  272. into prayer, into

  273. breaking bread,

  274. and they met daily

  275. together as the body

  276. of Christ doing life.

  277. Together and they,

  278. and they prayed

  279. and they encouraged

  280. one another.

  281. They communed

  282. together.

  283. They met in the

  284. temple courts.

  285. They also met in

  286. people's homes.

  287. And all of life was

  288. this sense of we're

  289. followers of Jesus

  290. and it's our identity.

  291. It's who we are and

  292. it's what we do.

  293. And so they not

  294. only gathered as

  295. Sunday morning

  296. worshipers in this.

  297. Sense of a corporate

  298. body experience,

  299. but they also were

  300. partaking in smaller

  301. group discipleship

  302. experiences in their

  303. life, and that's not

  304. something cool that

  305. came in the eighties.

  306. It's not something

  307. cool that somebody

  308. came up with in a

  309. book and we're like,

  310. we should do small

  311. groups in the church.

  312. It's cool idea.

  313. No, no, no.

  314. This is something that

  315. the early church was

  316. involved in doing.

  317. For thousands of years

  318. gathering together as

  319. the body of Christ,

  320. not just in that

  321. Sunday morning worship

  322. experience, but other

  323. times throughout

  324. the weekend in other

  325. places for a really

  326. significant purpose.

  327. And we're gonna

  328. unpack that a

  329. little bit today.

  330. This word small,

  331. probably is best

  332. understood in contrast

  333. to its Big Brother.

  334. Big, right?

  335. The word big

  336. seems to kind of

  337. make small seem.

  338. Well, I.

  339. Tiny, doesn't it?

  340. And if you're part of

  341. a generation in here

  342. that identifies with

  343. one of these three

  344. baby boomers, gen

  345. Xers, millennials.

  346. We all have certain

  347. characteristics.

  348. We got the Gen

  349. Zers and then, then

  350. we got the gen.

  351. We don't know what

  352. we're doing yet, sir.

  353. I dunno what that is.

  354. But there's a lot

  355. of different things.

  356. Our generation that

  357. we kind of grow up in

  358. kind of has as pillars

  359. of foundational

  360. ideology, right?

  361. The concepts of

  362. how we do life

  363. and world views

  364. and, and all these

  365. different things.

  366. Well, if you're part

  367. of, let's back all

  368. the way up to the baby

  369. boomer generation.

  370. The baby boomers

  371. had this mantra.

  372. And it goes like

  373. this, and you

  374. might recognize it.

  375. Bigger is better.

  376. Bigger is better.

  377. Right.

  378. And if you were

  379. part of the baby

  380. boomer generation.

  381. Having a bigger house,

  382. having a bigger tv,

  383. having bigger square

  384. footage in whatever

  385. it was that you

  386. owned, having a bigger

  387. footprint and a bigger

  388. stamp, and having

  389. bigger cars and bigger

  390. vacations and bigger

  391. everything, defined

  392. value, smaller was not

  393. as valuable as bigger.

  394. Bigger really

  395. mattered.

  396. And bigger defined

  397. what was best.

  398. It's interesting to

  399. watch some of the

  400. swing in the pendulum

  401. of younger generations

  402. who are sort of like

  403. minimalists, right?

  404. And trying to live

  405. in tiny houses.

  406. And the boomer

  407. generation is like.

  408. You're living

  409. in a shed.

  410. What are you doing?

  411. Right?

  412. Like it doesn't make

  413. sense and living

  414. in a shoebox trying

  415. to make life work.

  416. Or some millennials or

  417. Gen Z people who only

  418. have like a couple

  419. of pans when God gave

  420. you this huge drawer

  421. and it cabinet where

  422. you could shove 80

  423. pans you'll never

  424. use into, right.

  425. Like, 'cause it's

  426. better to have a

  427. big kitchen set.

  428. Right.

  429. Jamie Hart working

  430. through our own bigger

  431. and better kitchen

  432. set issues right now.

  433. Sorry, it's kind of.

  434. In my heart.

  435. Um, but is bigger

  436. always better?

  437. Is this a, is this a

  438. principle that really

  439. ought to be part

  440. of how we do life?

  441. I was thinking about

  442. this for myself and

  443. I was like, you know,

  444. when we got married,

  445. my waistline was a 29.

  446. Now it's a 28.

  447. No, actually

  448. that's not true.

  449. I can't lie right

  450. here on the Yeah, it's

  451. a little bit bigger

  452. than it was now.

  453. You may be like

  454. trying to sell it

  455. like I do, like Jamie.

  456. There's so much more

  457. of me to love now

  458. than there used to be.

  459. Bigger is

  460. better, right.

  461. But I'm not a hundred

  462. percent sure that

  463. bigger is better.

  464. And I was part

  465. of the Pepsi

  466. generation, right?

  467. My dad grew up where

  468. you had to, like I, me

  469. lived in kind of a, a

  470. small little town in

  471. northern Illinois with

  472. not a lot of money.

  473. And he would get

  474. like, you know, the

  475. nickel, soda bottle

  476. kind of thing, right?

  477. And you get like

  478. one Pepsi if you

  479. were good that year

  480. kind of vibe, right?

  481. And I grew up in

  482. the generation.

  483. Where we got free

  484. refills, right?

  485. And we got big cups.

  486. 'cause bigger

  487. is better.

  488. And we learned that.

  489. And then my doctor

  490. told me recently

  491. that that's not

  492. helping me as much

  493. as I thought it was.

  494. You know what

  495. I'm saying?

  496. So bigger being

  497. better isn't always

  498. a definition of

  499. quality and yet in

  500. our culture it's

  501. still linkers as kind

  502. of a status, right?

  503. You need a bigger

  504. house, don't you?

  505. I always get kind

  506. of cracked up when I

  507. see bigger and bigger

  508. and bigger houses.

  509. 'cause I, you

  510. know what?

  511. I see more and more

  512. and more square

  513. footage to vacuum

  514. more toilets.

  515. You get to scrub.

  516. Lucky.

  517. I wish I could

  518. be like you and

  519. really be somebody.

  520. I mean we have,

  521. yeah, nevermind.

  522. We'll move

  523. on from that.

  524. Okay.

  525. But, uh, if you like,

  526. go to our good friend

  527. expert, uh, let's

  528. see if he's on here.

  529. Google.

  530. And you type in

  531. the word small

  532. to kind of find a

  533. definition, right?

  534. It's gonna have words

  535. like this, okay?

  536. That's not helpful.

  537. They're small.

  538. A size that is

  539. less than normal.

  540. Small means less

  541. than normal.

  542. Second definition

  543. is insignificant

  544. and unimportant.

  545. Still in the, the

  546. fabric of our culture,

  547. this idea of big being

  548. better is still how we

  549. kind of are wired and

  550. how we tend to think.

  551. And I'm not always

  552. sure that that's

  553. the best thing.

  554. And it seeps into the

  555. church and how we do

  556. church and we think

  557. a bigger congregation

  558. and a bigger building

  559. and a bigger crowd.

  560. Is definitely better.

  561. And you know, it,

  562. it's nice to have a

  563. big crowd and it's

  564. nice to, to be able

  565. to do some big things.

  566. But I talk to people

  567. every day all the

  568. time who get lost

  569. in the big crowd and

  570. they hide in the big

  571. crowd and they just

  572. check their box that

  573. they showed up at a,

  574. an event and go home.

  575. And this whole

  576. following Jesus

  577. thing doesn't seem

  578. to be much more than

  579. just a quick crowd

  580. like experience.

  581. There were big crowds

  582. that followed Jesus.

  583. But man, Jesus was in

  584. a small group and a

  585. big group sometimes,

  586. but Jesus got away

  587. with his disciples

  588. and unpacked things.

  589. Jesus spent time

  590. with smaller

  591. groups of people to

  592. help them see and

  593. understand, right?

  594. It wasn't always just

  595. this big, big piece.

  596. In fact, when we

  597. look at this idea

  598. of less than normal,

  599. insignificant,

  600. and unimportant, I

  601. would challenge you

  602. that if you look

  603. into scripture,

  604. we serve the God

  605. who kind of flips

  606. everything upside

  607. down, doesn't he?

  608. Like small guys like

  609. you know, David,

  610. the insignificant

  611. kuan, worthless one

  612. becomes the greatest

  613. king probably in

  614. the history of all

  615. of Israel, right?

  616. Israel a small,

  617. minuscule nothing.

  618. That becomes the

  619. chosen race, the

  620. chosen people of God.

  621. God is in the business

  622. of taking the less

  623. than and making it

  624. more than He's in the

  625. business of taking

  626. the insignificant,

  627. the things that don't

  628. seem like they matter

  629. that much, or we're

  630. not as talented or

  631. as impressed by or

  632. impressive by the

  633. world's standards

  634. and making things

  635. eternally significant,

  636. far beyond what

  637. the world might

  638. say has value and

  639. significance, and

  640. people who feel

  641. very unimportant

  642. oftentimes.

  643. Become in the

  644. halls of eternity,

  645. incredibly important.

  646. And one day when we

  647. stand before the Lord

  648. in eternity, we're

  649. gonna have a whole

  650. different perspective

  651. on what we said

  652. was significant and

  653. important and small or

  654. large, or meaningful

  655. or not meaningful.

  656. We're gonna see things

  657. in a whole different

  658. light, and God is

  659. in the business of

  660. taking things that

  661. sometimes look like

  662. they're worthless

  663. and insignificant by

  664. the world standards.

  665. I.

  666. Man, I'm making them

  667. something amazing.

  668. And so I say that as

  669. we talk about small

  670. groups in some ways

  671. to help us see and

  672. remind ourselves that

  673. there is tremendous

  674. value in something,

  675. in a smaller package.

  676. But also you might

  677. feel insignificant

  678. and small.

  679. You might feel like

  680. you don't matter

  681. or you're chasing,

  682. measuring up to the

  683. world's expectation

  684. and standard of being

  685. great and significant.

  686. I think Jesus said if

  687. you want to be great.

  688. Be the servant of all.

  689. If you want to be

  690. great, become really

  691. small in your own

  692. eyes and let the

  693. Lord exalt you.

  694. Maybe that's not

  695. what I was talking

  696. about Totally, but

  697. if we're gonna touch

  698. on the word small,

  699. we gotta hit a little

  700. truth there, right?

  701. So as we think

  702. about small group

  703. discipleship

  704. size comes into

  705. play here, right?

  706. And it, and it has

  707. a, a piece to this,

  708. the definition of

  709. the word group.

  710. One definition is a

  711. number of individuals.

  712. Assembled together.

  713. Now without the

  714. word small, we're

  715. not sure what that

  716. number is, right?

  717. But when we throw

  718. that word small on

  719. there, we know this

  720. isn't a big group

  721. of individuals.

  722. We're not talking

  723. about crowds, right?

  724. And if we go back to

  725. Acts chapter two, and

  726. we look into what we

  727. just saw a few minutes

  728. ago, they broke bread

  729. in their homes and

  730. ate with gladness.

  731. There were thousands

  732. of people coming to

  733. faith in Jesus Christ.

  734. And I don't know how

  735. big your house is, but

  736. thousands of people

  737. probably don't fit

  738. in your house, right?

  739. And so it's pretty

  740. easy to assume

  741. here from the

  742. scripture that.

  743. Groups of people that

  744. were smaller in number

  745. were meeting together

  746. regularly, breaking

  747. bread in their homes,

  748. praying, encouraging

  749. one another, doing

  750. life together, right

  751. in a smaller capacity.

  752. And then over in

  753. Roman 16, five, we

  754. see things like the

  755. church that meets

  756. in their home.

  757. And, uh, it would

  758. be really fun, I

  759. think, to go to Tom

  760. and Shannon's for

  761. church next Sunday.

  762. In fact, if you don't

  763. make it here, um,

  764. maybe we should all

  765. just take a little

  766. field trip and

  767. that could be fun.

  768. Just pile around

  769. your house and all

  770. try to shove in.

  771. From the hot tub I

  772. takes from the hot

  773. tub, probably not.

  774. Let's meet here.

  775. That's gonna

  776. work out better.

  777. But uh, yeah,

  778. that's just gonna

  779. work out better

  780. all the way around.

  781. But the church

  782. meeting in homes and

  783. in smaller groups is

  784. a biblical concept

  785. that's been around

  786. for a long time, a

  787. number of individuals

  788. assembled together.

  789. Another definition

  790. is this, two or

  791. more figures forming

  792. a complete unit.

  793. And if you're like me,

  794. this sort of jumps out

  795. at you two or more.

  796. That kind of reminds

  797. us of something in

  798. scripture, doesn't it?

  799. Where Jesus says,

  800. for where two or

  801. three, gather in

  802. my name, there I

  803. am with them, even

  804. two who would come

  805. together in the name

  806. of Jesus to gather.

  807. Jesus says, I'm

  808. gonna show up.

  809. So check this out.

  810. This is kind of cool.

  811. This hit me not

  812. a big math guy.

  813. Um, but check

  814. this out.

  815. Two or more figures

  816. forming a complete

  817. unit in the church.

  818. You're never.

  819. Ever gonna have

  820. a small group

  821. of just two?

  822. You can't, right?

  823. It's always gonna be

  824. a minimum of three.

  825. 'cause if just two

  826. of you show up, Jesus

  827. is gonna join you.

  828. Right?

  829. And so you're never

  830. just two of you

  831. hanging out alone.

  832. That's kind of

  833. a cool picture.

  834. And don't forget,

  835. we do this thing.

  836. We're like,

  837. oh, there's

  838. only two of us.

  839. Negative, right?

  840. Small, insignificant,

  841. unimportant.

  842. But Jesus says.

  843. There's two of you.

  844. I'm coming.

  845. That's kind of

  846. a cool picture.

  847. We gotta rearrange

  848. how we think about

  849. this word small

  850. sometimes, because

  851. God may be able to

  852. do more work in that

  853. small setting, right?

  854. I love our church.

  855. You guys are an

  856. incredible family.

  857. You do a great job of

  858. trying to be inclusive

  859. and love everybody

  860. and have conversations

  861. together and engage.

  862. But let's be honest,

  863. there's not a lot

  864. of space right here

  865. in this moment for.

  866. For, uh, a

  867. question, right?

  868. Even just a

  869. clarifying question.

  870. Wait, could you say

  871. that one more time?

  872. I kind of missed that.

  873. Or, oh, that might

  874. tie, does that

  875. apply to this?

  876. Like, while I would

  877. enjoy that, not

  878. everybody maybe in the

  879. room would too, right?

  880. If we just derail

  881. on rabbit trails

  882. everywhere, right?

  883. And we have to

  884. be sagacious,

  885. it's not gonna

  886. work if we don't.

  887. So we have to use good

  888. metal judgment, right?

  889. And wisdom.

  890. But smaller groups

  891. are places where you

  892. can ask a clarifying

  893. question and you

  894. don't have to feel

  895. silly or awkward

  896. or embarrassed, and

  897. you have a voice.

  898. Where you matter

  899. and, and you fit and

  900. you belong, right?

  901. You're not just

  902. sort of like left to

  903. wonder and ponder.

  904. You can actually talk

  905. together and engage

  906. Jesus' disciples, man.

  907. They would come to

  908. him after he talked

  909. to the crowds and

  910. they would say, could

  911. you explain to us the

  912. parable of the sower?

  913. Right?

  914. Because we don't

  915. really understand.

  916. It sounded really

  917. good and we were like,

  918. yeah, listen to what

  919. Jesus says everybody.

  920. What are you saying?

  921. Right?

  922. Like, 'cause

  923. sometimes you need

  924. to get in a smaller

  925. space to be able

  926. to unpack and have

  927. conversation and gain

  928. more understanding

  929. and that's cool.

  930. That's part of the

  931. design of it, right?

  932. Okay.

  933. This isn't the whole.

  934. Definition here.

  935. Two, A number

  936. of individuals

  937. assembled together.

  938. There's that

  939. word together.

  940. Don't forget it means

  941. come and with, right?

  942. You don't just sit and

  943. not engage, you go,

  944. and you're not alone.

  945. You're with others.

  946. There's a sense of

  947. belonging, right?

  948. So a number of

  949. individuals assembled

  950. together, having some

  951. unifying relationship.

  952. So it's a number,

  953. a small number of

  954. individuals who are

  955. coming together.

  956. Having some unifying

  957. relationship.

  958. This word

  959. relationship, the root

  960. idea here of being

  961. related to have some

  962. commonality, right?

  963. A sense that you

  964. belong to this

  965. group and in small

  966. group discipleship

  967. as the church

  968. for generations.

  969. It's centered

  970. around this idea

  971. right here, this

  972. word actually being

  973. disciples who are hip.

  974. Very important.

  975. Don't miss that one.

  976. Oh no, sorry.

  977. That one kind of

  978. jumped out to me

  979. when I changed it.

  980. Right.

  981. We share something

  982. in common in a small

  983. group discipleship

  984. experience as

  985. followers of

  986. Jesus Christ.

  987. And what is it?

  988. Oh, we're disciples.

  989. And what does

  990. that mean?

  991. Well, it means being

  992. a follower, but not

  993. just a follower of

  994. anybody or anything.

  995. It means being

  996. a follower of

  997. Jesus, right?

  998. That's our unifying

  999. relationship.

  1000. When you walk into

  1001. this building and

  1002. you see other people,

  1003. you may think to

  1004. yourself, I have

  1005. nothing in common

  1006. with the person right

  1007. across that aisle.

1008. Oh, but do not let

  1009. the enemy isolate

  1010. and separate you

  1011. from the family of

  1012. God and your faith

  1013. community because you

  1014. are related, because

  1015. you're followers of

  1016. Jesus Christ, you are

  1017. his disciples, and

  1018. you share something

  1019. more common and

  1020. strong as a bond.

  1021. Than probably any

  1022. stupid sports, you

  1023. know, connection

  1024. or random job that

1025. I used to work at

  1026. that you now work

  1027. at kind of vibe.

  1028. You guys have a

  1029. powerful connection

  1030. as followers of

  1031. Jesus Christ.

  1032. And maybe like

  1033. the word small,

  1034. this word follower

  1035. gets a negative

  1036. term, doesn't it?

  1037. You're just

  1038. a follower.

  1039. You're such

  1040. a follower.

  1041. Sometimes we're,

  1042. we're a little

  1043. arrogant and prideful

  1044. and following.

  1045. Jesus is about

  1046. humility, right?

  1047. And we call him

  1048. Lord for a reason.

  1049. We're not,

  1050. Lord, he is.

  1051. And as followers of

  1052. Jesus Christ, we're

  1053. called not to like.

  1054. Let Jesus co-pilot

  1055. with us and give

  1056. us some advice as

  1057. we navigate life.

1058. We're called to get in

  1059. the backseat and say,

  1060. Jesus, take me where

1061. you want me to go.

  1062. I'm following you.

  1063. You are leading,

  1064. you are in charge.

  1065. You are the

  1066. Lord of my life.

1067. And I submit to your

  1068. lordship, right?

  1069. And this word being

  1070. is cool because it's

1071. this idea of a state

  1072. of being, right?

  1073. It's active.

1074. I am not some passive

  1075. follower of Jesus.

  1076. I am in the

  1077. process of being a

  1078. follower of Jesus.

  1079. What does it

1080. look like to be a

  1081. follower of Jesus?

1082. Well, I sit at church

  1083. one day a week for a

  1084. few minutes and listen

1085. to a bald guy rant.

  1086. Isn't that what

  1087. followers of Jesus do?

  1088. Probably not.

  1089. I mean, hopefully a

  1090. little bit of that,

  1091. don't get me wrong,

  1092. but there's a whole

1093. lot more to follow in

  1094. Jesus than showing up

  1095. on a Sunday morning

  1096. worship gathering

  1097. and sitting there.

1098. Sure, we come and we

  1099. worship and we engage.

  1100. We do those things,

  1101. but man, there's

  1102. a whole lot other

  1103. days in this week

  1104. that Jesus wants

  1105. you to follow

  1106. him and the small

  1107. group discipleship

  1108. experience.

1109. It kind of puts you

  1110. in an environment

  1111. with other people who

  1112. are trying to figure

1113. out what does it look

  1114. like to follow Jesus.

  1115. Part of what we're

  1116. gonna be doing in

  1117. this, uh, this cool

  1118. practicing the way

  1119. nine week small group

  1120. initiative we're

  1121. gonna launch is to

1122. put you in a group.

1123. If you want to be

  1124. part of another group

  1125. of people who are

  1126. saying, I'm gonna

  1127. try to follow Jesus

  1128. and we're gonna hit

  1129. these nine principles

  1130. one each week and

  1131. explore it together

  1132. and see what it's

1133. like to try to follow

  1134. Jesus in this space

  1135. and in this space.

  1136. Right.

  1137. Because when you

  1138. meet together as

  1139. a small group for

  1140. discipleship, notice

  1141. it's not just a

  1142. small group, right?

  1143. Like we're gonna watch

  1144. the Colts together.

  1145. Come on over.

  1146. It's a small group.

  1147. I want those

  1148. groups too, don't

  1149. get me wrong.

  1150. But a small group

  1151. that's designed around

  1152. being a follower

  1153. of Jesus is gonna

  1154. focus on things like

  1155. fellowship together.

  1156. Encouraging one

  1157. another, supporting

  1158. right sharpening.

  1159. We're gonna look

  1160. at teaching and

  1161. learning and growth.

  1162. We're gonna look

  1163. at praying together

  1164. and spend time

  1165. experiencing being

  1166. prayed for and praying

  1167. for other people.

  1168. And there's this

  1169. sense of breaking

  1170. bread together, right?

  1171. This idea of

  1172. communion.

  1173. That's really tied to

  1174. this relational sense

  1175. of communing with one

  1176. another, which really

  1177. creates a cool sense

  1178. of community, right?

  1179. That we do life

  1180. together in a

  1181. space where we're

  1182. experiencing support

  1183. and encouragement

  1184. and all the more

  1185. scripture says, right?

  1186. As the day approaches.

  1187. Well, I'm really

  1188. excited about this

  1189. initiative that

  1190. we're gonna take as

  1191. a church, and I want

1192. you to know this isn't

1193. the only way to be

  1194. obedient to the Lord.

1195. In, in finding a way

  1196. to connect in small

  1197. group relationship.

  1198. There's a lot of ways

  1199. and there's a lot of

  1200. groups and there's a

  1201. lot of opportunities

1202. for you to do more

  1203. than just check

  1204. a box on a Sunday

  1205. morning and say, I'm a

  1206. follower of Jesus now.

  1207. 'cause I did

  1208. this experience.

  1209. The church of Jesus

  1210. Christ met every

  1211. single day together.

  1212. Did life together.

  1213. Sometimes that's

  1214. hard to do in

  1215. our environment,

  1216. and I understand

  1217. that for sure.

1218. But do not neglect to

1219. be part of the body.

  1220. Do not neglect to

  1221. engage in some of

  1222. these really important

  1223. priority practices

  1224. that God has called

1225. us to as the church.

  1226. These aren't fancy

  1227. old church traditions.

  1228. These were things

  1229. that the church did

  1230. at the beginning.

1231. And that we ought to

  1232. continue to follow

  1233. in because of how

  1234. significant they are

  1235. in our development

  1236. as people who are

  1237. following Jesus, the

  1238. encouragement we bring

  1239. to one another and

1240. that we find from one

  1241. another, and God has

  1242. great purpose in this.

  1243. Do not neglect

  1244. gathering regularly

  1245. as the body of

  1246. Christ to worship

  1247. and to encourage.

  1248. Don't neglect

  1249. that so important.

  1250. Don't reprioritize

1251. that as sort of a

  1252. optional thing in my,

  1253. in my month, should

  1254. look at her month

1255. and be like, well, I

  1256. already know there's

  1257. at least four or

  1258. five days that are

  1259. locked up for me.

  1260. 'cause they

  1261. matter really

  1262. more than anything

  1263. else going on.

  1264. Right.

  1265. Should have those

  1266. conversations

  1267. as you look at

  1268. your scheduling,

  1269. because it matters

  1270. that you're here.

  1271. It matters that

  1272. you listen.

  1273. It matters that

  1274. you worship.

  1275. It matters that you

  1276. share, and I really

  1277. want to encourage

  1278. you to explore what

  1279. it looks like in

  1280. your context to find

1281. a way to engage in

  1282. some small group

  1283. discipleship with

  1284. other believers,

1285. not for me, and not

  1286. for a great program

  1287. that Dax can help

  1288. oversee on some

  1289. night of the week.

1290. But so that you can

  1291. experience what God

  1292. has for his people

1293. as you model some of

  1294. the priorities that

1295. he's laid out for us.

  1296. And you're gonna

  1297. have to be sagacious,

  1298. use good judgment to

  1299. figure it all out.

  1300. Lord Jesus, thank you

  1301. for these practices

  1302. and these principles.

  1303. Really these

  1304. priorities of how your

  1305. church has lived and

  1306. functioned and done

  1307. life for millennia.

  1308. And Lord, you know,

  1309. our busy, hectic,

  1310. modern schedule and

  1311. all the technology and

  1312. all the distractions

  1313. and all the priorities

  1314. that bombard us.

  1315. And Lord, you don't

1316. scold us or beat us

  1317. up with these truths.

  1318. I think you just

  1319. invite us into

  1320. relationship.

  1321. And so this morning,

  1322. Lord, rather than

  1323. a, a ton of guilt or

  1324. shame or conviction

  1325. about all the things

  1326. we could be doing

  1327. better that we're not.

  1328. I pray, Lord, that

1329. for each of us, you

1330. would just give us the

  1331. courage to take one

  1332. little step towards

1333. you in these areas of

  1334. saying to our family

  1335. and to ourselves, and

  1336. we're gonna make sure

  1337. your priorities are

  1338. our priorities, and

  1339. we're gonna try to

  1340. engage in some ways

  1341. that are important.

  1342. Lord, thank you for

  1343. every person who's

  1344. part of this family.

  1345. Thank you for your

  1346. huge family worldwide

  1347. and throughout all of

  1348. time we're connected

  1349. to some pretty

  1350. amazing people and

  1351. some pretty flawed

  1352. people that you've

  1353. loved and called

  1354. into relationship,

  1355. and thank you

  1356. that we're counted

  1357. among that number.

  1358. I pray, Lord, you

  1359. guide us this week.

  1360. Guide us in discerning

1361. what it is that you

1362. want us to do and

1363. how you want us to

  1364. prioritize our life.

  1365. That we might honor

  1366. you and experience

  1367. everything you

  1368. have for us.

  1369. In Jesus name

  1370. we pray, amen.

  1371. Amen.
