  1. Has been leading the

  2. last couple weeks and,

  3. uh, last week the song

  4. tied to chains, right?

  5. That whole chain

  6. connection, which

  7. worked out perfect

  8. with what we've

  9. been talking about.

  10. And somehow, I didn't

  11. get the email this

  12. week until this

  13. morning that we were

  14. gonna drop a little,

  15. you know, transition

  16. worship song right

  17. into the sermon

  18. involving Christmas,

  19. to which I thought,

  20. thanks Russell.

  21. Now that's a

  22. curve ball, bro.

  23. What do we

  24. do with this?

  25. And then it hit me,

  26. what is Christmas?

  27. Right?

  28. Well, Christmas,

  29. actually, the word

  30. comes from this

  31. word, Christ, mass,

  32. that over the years

  33. got blended to be

  34. Christmas and Christ

  35. Mass quite literally

  36. means a Jesus worship

  37. service, which

  38. is what Christmas

  39. originally was.

  40. And then it

  41. reminded me.

  42. Huh A Jesus

  43. worship service.

  44. Now, there's a

  45. tie into one of

  46. our three simple

  47. priority practices,

  48. right, of the early

  49. church, because for

  50. generations, the

  51. church has been doing

  52. these three things

  53. that are priority

  54. practices of the

  55. body of Christ,

  56. from generation

  57. to generation

  58. to generation.

  59. One of which

  60. is the Sunday

  61. Worship Gathering.

  62. You might call

  63. it Christ Mass.

  64. Nice job, Russell.

  65. Good segue.

  66. The Jesus

  67. worship service.

  68. Right?

  69. Since Jesus rose

  70. on that Sunday, the

  71. first day of the

  72. week, the church has

  73. gathered to celebrate

  74. who he is and what

  75. he has done, right?

  76. And they worship,

  77. they express praise,

  78. and they share

  79. together, and they

  80. commune together.

  81. And they gather

  82. together and our

  83. culture's been

  84. pushing away

  85. against that, right?

  86. But there is this

  87. coming with, that's

  88. part of that together

  89. picture, right?

  90. That we move from

  91. where we are to not

  92. be isolated and alone,

  93. but we come with,

  94. and then we talked

  95. about this second

  96. link in the chain

  97. all the way back to

  98. the early church.

  99. This second s.

  100. That represents

  101. small group

  102. discipleship, right?

  103. That the church

  104. met in each other's

  105. homes and they

  106. spent time together.

  107. And if you want to

  108. get real serious

  109. about small groups,

  110. the Bible says

  111. they met daily in

  112. each other's homes.

  113. We've been looking

  114. for some hosts to

  115. do the daily small

  116. group at your house.

  117. So far, we've just

  118. got weekly volunteers,

  119. but if you're one of

  120. those daily people

  121. come talk to me.

  122. Right?

  123. Uh, no.

  124. That's not happening

  125. in my house either,

  126. just so you know.

  127. But the church met

  128. together on a regular

  129. basis in smaller

  130. groups where it

  131. was safe to ask a

  132. clarifying question.

  133. You know, I mean

  134. we, you might do

  135. that here while I'm

  136. preaching and be

  137. like, Andy, what are

  138. you talking about?

  139. I get that and I get

  140. that look in your face

  141. sometimes, but it's

  142. not easy to maybe ask

  143. it in this question

  144. or in this place.

  145. Right.

  146. It's a lot easier to

  147. do that in a smaller

  148. group and to spend

  149. time praying together.

  150. We have to all pray

  151. for Olivia, and that

  152. was a beautiful thing

  153. to do as the church.

  154. I.

  155. But it's also neat

  156. in smaller groups to

  157. be able to sh to stop

  158. and pray for lots

  159. of different needs

  160. that maybe don't get

  161. shared in the big

  162. corporate expression.

  163. Right?

  164. And we meet together

  165. 'cause we share

  166. something in common.

  167. We're disciples

  168. of Jesus, right?

  169. Followers of Jesus.

  170. This word

  171. discipleship's.

  172. Cool.

  173. Reminds me of a

  174. plug I wanna make

  175. really quick.

  176. I never do this, but

  177. go see the forge.

  178. Oh, it's so good.

  179. Susie texted me

  180. and you know, I get

  181. texts from Susie.

  182. Susie every

  183. once in a while.

  184. You know, this is a

  185. good movie, but she's

  186. smart enough not to

  187. send me to a movie

  188. all the time, like

  189. she probably wants to.

  190. Right?

  191. We went hung out with

  192. Brenda and some of

  193. the crew yesterday,

  194. the Harpers.

  195. Oh my goodness.

  196. That's a powerful

  197. film and really

  198. encouraging.

  199. In fact, I'm gonna

  200. make you this money

  201. back guarantee.

  202. If you go see this

  203. movie and you're

  204. not encouraged,

  205. I will fund your

  206. miserable trip.

  207. Okay?

  208. So you come find

  209. me and you say,

  210. Andy, I didn't think

  211. that was any good.

  212. And it was a miserable

  213. experience for me.

  214. And I will talk to

  215. Jamie and see if I can

  216. get you reimbursed.

  217. Okay.

  218. But check it out.

  219. Plus we get a chance

  220. to send a message

  221. to Hollywood, right?

  222. That this is the

  223. kind of quality stuff

  224. that we wanna see.

  225. But it, if you

  226. go, you're gonna

  227. be encouraged.

  228. I'm encouraged.

  229. I'm still

  230. encouraged about it.

  231. It was really cool.

  232. So today, the last s

  233. in the chain link, I

  234. mean, let's be honest,

  235. there's a lot more

  236. than just these three

  237. little pieces of chain

  238. that connect us to the

  239. early church, right?

  240. But the ones we're

  241. focusing on, on

  242. these three simple.

  243. Priority practice

  244. is the early church.

  245. Today's S is Susie

  246. Alexander's birthday.

  247. What the heck?

  248. Wow.

  249. Wow.

  250. I dunno how that

  251. got in there.

  252. No, that is not Happy

  253. birthday, Susie.

  254. But, uh, yeah,

  255. nicely played.

  256. How much did

  257. that cost?

  258. Did you give like 12%

  259. in your tithe and get

  260. a birthday message?

  261. Is that how

  262. that works?

  263. I like that.

  264. Let's do that.

  265. Alright, so today's

  266. s is this, and some

  267. of you have guessed

  268. it, it's this.

  269. The church met

  270. together regularly

  271. on Sundays.

  272. They met in small

  273. group and gathered

  274. and encouraged

  275. disciple fellowship,

  276. all kinds of cool

  277. stuff, and they were

  278. involved in serving.

  279. I give yourself a

  280. pound in the back if

  281. you got that SI know

  282. some of you have come

  283. up with some other

  284. stuff like scripture.

  285. Scripture's a part

  286. of that all the time,

  287. just so you know,

  288. fits in everywhere.

  289. But not just

  290. serving, they

  291. served one another.

  292. The early church

  293. was very committed

  294. to this idea of

  295. serving one another.

  296. That they were called

  297. as part of this family

  298. of God, the body

  299. of Christ to serve

  300. the body of Christ

  301. and their family,

  302. the family of God.

  303. The beautiful picture

  304. that Renee painted

  305. for us as the body

  306. of Christ, right?

  307. The church scripture

  308. says this in Galatians

  309. five 13, you, my

  310. brothers and sisters

  311. were called to be

  312. free, but do not

  313. use your freedom to

  314. indulge the flesh,

  315. the sinful nature,

  316. rather, what's it say?

  317. Serve one another.

  318. Humbly in love serve

  319. one another in love

  320. service that's wrapped

  321. in this beautiful

  322. package called love.

  323. Maybe not always

  324. feeling like I love

  325. you, so I want to help

  326. serve, but choosing

  327. to love sometimes

  328. even because serving

  329. one another, well,

  330. what does it do?

  331. The entire law is

  332. fulfilled in keeping

  333. this one command.

  334. Love your neighbor

  335. as yourself.

  336. Jesus said the

  337. greatest commandment,

  338. love the Lord your

  339. God with all your

  340. heart, mind, soul,

  341. and strength, and

  342. love your neighbor

  343. as yourself.

  344. The second right,

  345. the church recognized

  346. that it's already

  347. assumed here, that

  348. you're loving the Lord

  349. your God, with all

  350. your heart, mind, and

  351. soul and strength.

  352. So what's left?

  353. That we ought to

  354. be agents of love,

  355. that we ought to be

  356. serving one another in

  357. love that that's the

  358. picture of the church

  359. of Jesus Christ.

  360. There's a defining

  361. characteristic

  362. serving one another.

  363. This word serve is

  364. not an uncommon word

  365. for us in our culture.

  366. I mean, some of us

  367. know things like

  368. tennis, right?

  369. Uh, now I think

  370. we would say

  371. pickleball is the

  372. predominant racket

  373. sport in our world.

  374. Yes.

  375. Oh, careful, careful.

  376. I did have to ask

  377. Brian to make sure.

  378. Uh, 'cause, 'cause

  379. here's the big debate

  380. amongst theologians.

  381. Tennis has always

  382. been considered

  383. the earliest

  384. sport in history.

  385. Biblical

  386. history, right?

  387. Because in the Bible

  388. it talks about Joseph,

  389. the code of many

  390. colors guy, right?

  391. And it says very

  392. clearly that he served

  393. in Pharaoh's court.

  394. So we've thought

  395. all along, it's been

  396. tennis, but maybe

  397. pickleball isn't

  398. actually that new.

  399. You know what

  400. I'm saying?

  401. I appreciate you not

  402. groan in too much.

  403. Good job.

  404. So we have sports

  405. where we, some of you

  406. just now getting that,

  407. that's brutal, right?

  408. Like, oh my gosh, I.

  409. I am sorry.

  410. I, I'm not sorry.

  411. Volleyball, we

  412. serve, we, we,

  413. we, we use this

  414. word serve, right?

  415. In fact, sometimes,

  416. not so much

  417. since Covid, but

  418. there's servers

  419. in restaurants.

  420. You know, we're used

  421. to that picture of

  422. people serving in a

  423. restaurant and, and

  424. doing some things.

  425. I actually was

  426. thinking about this

  427. and, uh, I think

  428. the clearest picture

  429. of how our culture

  430. understands this idea

  431. of serving comes from

  432. something called.

  433. The self-serve ice

  434. cream machine, right?

  435. Or even worse now,

  436. something we call the

  437. self-checkout lane.

  438. Oh my gosh.

  439. Self-service checkout

  440. the number of people

  441. who ha, raise your

  442. hand if you love

  443. self-service checkout

  444. where nobody helps you

  445. with your groceries.

  446. Okay, cool.

  447. That's cool.

  448. Well, it's a

  449. very interesting

  450. sociological look at

  451. where we're at, right?

  452. As a society, we,

  453. we, we get service,

  454. but we're really big

  455. into this idea of.

  456. Self serving.

  457. Right.

  458. And I would challenge

  459. us to think that as

  460. we talk about the

  461. idea of serving, we

  462. have a really hard

  463. time serving without

  464. self being a big part

  465. of the equation in

  466. what we're willing

  467. to do this morning.

  468. I wanna ask you

  469. this question and

  470. have you wrestle

  471. with this 'cause?

  472. 'cause I have, and

  473. it's not a fun one.

  474. It's this.

  475. Who are you serving?

  476. Who are you serving?

  477. I don't like this

  478. question a lot because

  479. there's an implication

  480. that I ought to be

  481. serving, and if I'm

  482. not serving, then

  483. there's a sense of

  484. sort of like maybe I'm

  485. not doing something

  486. I should be doing.

  487. So it's not a real

  488. fun question, but I

  489. think it's a really

  490. important one if

  491. you're gonna claim

  492. to be a follower

  493. of Jesus Christ.

  494. We go back to,

  495. uh, Roman 6 22.

  496. Here it says this, now

  497. that you have been set

  498. free from sin and have

  499. become slaves to God,

  500. the benefit you reap

  501. leads to eternal life.

  502. There's a big

  503. picture answer to

  504. the question, who

  505. are you serving?

  506. Scripture would say,

  507. it's not a complicated

  508. big picture question.

  509. You're either choosing

  510. to serve righteousness

  511. to serve God, or maybe

  512. you're choosing self

  513. and and sin, right?

  514. And it's pictured here

  515. in this description.

  516. Very simply one

  517. or the other.

  518. Not a lot of gray

  519. area in between.

  520. There's sin that

  521. you're enslaved

  522. to or there's God.

  523. Who do you serve?

  524. This word slave is

  525. an interesting one.

  526. Uh, 'cause he gets

  527. used a lot in the

  528. New Testament.

  529. To kind of be

  530. interchangeable with

  531. some other scriptures.

  532. But here it's a very

  533. strong picture of,

  534. of slavery, right?

  535. And bondage the word

  536. here in the Greek, the

  537. root word of dolos has

  538. this image of bond,

  539. servant and slave.

  540. But you're

  541. stuck, right?

  542. You're in bondage.

  543. Maybe because of

  544. the choices in your

  545. life, you had to make

  546. yourself an indentured

  547. servant or a bond

  548. servant to someone.

  549. And the scripture

  550. is really, really

  551. clear, right?

  552. That those of us.

  553. Who are apart from

  554. Christ are trapped in

  555. this bondage to sin.

  556. The Bible's crazy

  557. clear on it, right

  558. that all mankind is

  559. guilty of sin because

  560. of Adam and Eve's

  561. rebellion and the

  562. consequences of being

  563. born into a human race

  564. filled with sin, but

  565. also because of our

  566. own personal choices.

  567. God gave us simple

  568. things like His

  569. 10 Commandments.

  570. Don't cheat, don't

  571. steal, right?

  572. Don't dishonor

  573. your parents.

  574. Dang it.

  575. I was doing great

  576. till that one.

  577. You know what I mean?

  578. Every one of us has

  579. broken God's commands.

  580. And find ourselves

  581. guilty before him.

  582. And trapped Scripture

  583. says into this

  584. bondage of sin.

  585. But because of what

  586. God has done, he's

  587. given us opportunity

  588. to be well, a Bond

  589. servant to him.

  590. And I think Bond

  591. servant works here

  592. because the next

  593. verse talks about

  594. this idea of being

  595. free from sin with

  596. the imagery of wages.

  597. That the wages of sin,

  598. what we have earned.

  599. Is eternal death

  600. and the consequence,

  601. but the gift of

  602. God, the free gift

  603. of God is eternal

  604. life through Jesus

  605. Christ, our Lord.

  606. So there's this

  607. imagery that we're

  608. either serving

  609. the devil or we're

  610. serving the Lord and

  611. there's not a lot

  612. of room in between.

  613. And a very important

  614. answer to this big

  615. question is, which one

  616. of those two camps do

  617. you find yourself in?

  618. Are you serving

  619. the Lord or are

  620. you serving?

  621. Yourself and the

  622. sinful nature and the

  623. flesh, all of these

  624. things, if you're not

  625. serving God, there's

  626. just one other bucket

  627. that everything

  628. else falls into.

  629. You're like,

  630. well, I'm sort of

  631. like in between.

  632. I'm sort of

  633. riding the fence.

  634. I don't think

  635. that works

  636. biblically 'cause.

  637. See, we're either

  638. enslaved and in

  639. bond service to

  640. sin or to the Lord.

  641. And if you're a

  642. follower of Jesus

  643. Christ, here's a real

  644. hardcore reality.

  645. We are servants

  646. of Jesus Christ.

  647. Yeah, we are servants

  648. of Jesus Christ.

  649. The early church

  650. understood it well,

  651. could it be because

  652. a lot of the culture

  653. of the early church

  654. was bond servants

  655. and slaves who came

  656. to faith in Jesus

  657. Christ in big areas

  658. around the Roman

  659. Empire, and they could

  660. totally get it and

  661. made sense to 'em.

  662. Like, Hey, I'm in

  663. slavery already.

  664. I understand.

  665. But boy, how much

  666. better to be free

  667. from sin and death

  668. and alive to Christ.

  669. And that's the cool

  670. thing, because slavery

  671. to God, bond service

  672. to God isn't some

  673. kind of punishment.

  674. It's life and

  675. it's hope and

  676. it's opportunity.

  677. 'cause he is

  678. good, right?

  679. His burden is light,

  680. his yoke, it's easy.

  681. It's not, not easy

  682. to live out, but it's

  683. gentle and it's good

  684. and we can trust him.

  685. Jesus calls us

  686. to be servants.

  687. Who do you serve?

  688. Are you a servant?

  689. Most of us don't

  690. want to be servants.

  691. Most of us want

  692. to have servants.

  693. I get that.

  694. I would like to

  695. have somebody else

  696. clean my room.

  697. That'll be great.

  698. That's why I

  699. got married.

  700. I just wanna say

  701. that's getting more

  702. trouble than IRDM.

  703. Right.

  704. Trust me.

  705. Trust me.

  706. Jamie will never

  707. clean our room again.

  708. And it was

  709. probably time.

  710. Jamie, can we sit

  711. on the couch and

  712. just have a moment?

  713. Just us.

  714. Uh, anyways,

  715. moving on.

  716. Jesus.

  717. Was a servant, right?

  718. Mark says this in,

  719. in the gospel, mark

  720. for Jesus says, for

  721. even the son of man

  722. did not come to be

  723. served, but to serve

  724. and give his life

  725. as a ransom, right?

  726. Why did he come?

  727. He came to serve.

  728. That's why he came

  729. to serve and to

  730. lay down his life.

  731. Here's one of our

  732. problems we get

  733. into in modern

  734. day and American

  735. church culture.

  736. I mean, Jesus was a

  737. servant, but I don't

  738. know if I'm supposed

  739. to be or have to be.

  740. You know what I mean?

  741. Like he set me free

  742. so I don't have to

  743. really be a servant.

  744. Now, he was a servant.

  745. He took care of me,

  746. and now I'm just

  747. here living the

  748. good life, right?

  749. Except that's not

  750. what he calls us to.

  751. He calls us to die

  752. to ourself and to

  753. serve one another,

  754. to serve him, and

  755. serving one another

  756. is serving him.

  757. That's what he's

  758. called us to do.

  759. And we're like, ah.

  760. In fact, he goes on

  761. to say it here, right?

  762. He's, he's

  763. talking about in

  764. the Washington

  765. Disciples feet.

  766. He says, now that I

  767. the Lord, your teacher

  768. have washed your feet,

  769. you also should wash

  770. the feet of another.

  771. I've set you

  772. an example that

  773. you should.

  774. What do as I have

  775. done, this is

  776. what Jesus said,

  777. you should wash

  778. each other's feet.

  779. That's metaphorical.

  780. Though, if somebody

  781. beside you needs

  782. a good foot wash,

  783. you could offer

  784. God's called us to

  785. serve each other.

  786. And I don't mean like

  787. one of his hopes and

  788. dreams for us is that

  789. we might be people

  790. who serve one another.

  791. That's what we think

  792. of called sometimes

  793. like That's a

  794. beautiful thought,

  795. beautiful pipe dream.

  796. Jesus.

  797. No, it's a command

  798. of his directly

  799. to his followers.

  800. Serve one another,

  801. serve one another.

  802. And then very truly,

  803. I say to you as he

  804. wraps that up, no

  805. servant is greater

  806. than his master.

  807. Be very careful

  808. that we don't make

  809. ourselves kings while

  810. Jesus is willing to

  811. be a servant, right?

  812. I use this phrase

  813. all the time, and it

  814. probably drives you

  815. nuts, but remember

  816. the phrase, serving

  817. others does not

  818. lead to greatness.

  819. Serving others does

  820. not lead to greatness.

  821. Serving others

  822. is greatness.

  823. Jesus defines

  824. greatness by our

  825. willingness to serve

  826. John the Baptist.

  827. He says, no one,

  828. no one born a a

  829. woman is like him,

  830. not even anybody.

  831. Wow.

  832. And yet, the one

  833. who is least in

  834. the kingdom is, is

  835. greater than John.

  836. That's what Jesus

  837. said, right?

  838. Servant.

  839. We are servants

  840. of Jesus Christ.

  841. I wanna make a, uh,

  842. I mean, sometimes

  843. my brain is real

  844. complicated.

  845. It's really deep

  846. and complex.

  847. Just not usually.

  848. So I wanna make

  849. a simply profound

  850. statement to you.

  851. Are you ready?

  852. I don't want you

  853. to miss this.

  854. This is important.

  855. Servants serve.

  856. It's good.

  857. Right?

  858. That's legit.

  859. Yeah.

  860. It even makes

  861. sense, right?

  862. It's, I'd love to say

  863. that, you know, I had

  864. deeper thoughts than

  865. this this week, but

  866. I don't think I did

  867. servants serve, but

  868. it's a pretty profound

  869. reality because what

  870. defines a servant?

  871. It's their service.

  872. It's not just

  873. something they do,

  874. it's who they are.

  875. And Jesus doesn't

  876. call us to do tasks.

  877. He calls us to

  878. be something.

  879. He doesn't say,

  880. do service work.

  881. He says, be a servant

  882. and servants serve.

  883. It's what they do.

  884. And if we're

  885. gonna claim to be

  886. servants of Jesus

  887. Christ, then what

  888. should we be doing

  889. serving one another?

  890. Right.

  891. Serving one another.

  892. And if we're not

  893. serving one another,

  894. I think it's fair to

  895. say, are you really

  896. following Christ or

  897. are you just doing

  898. your own thing?

  899. Are you just serving

  900. yourself and you can

  901. go to church and that

  902. can be self-serving.

  903. You can make better

  904. business connections.

  905. You can see

  906. hotter girls.

  907. I mean, there's a lot

  908. of things you can do

  909. going to church that

  910. are all about you

  911. and not about what

  912. does it look like to

  913. roll up my sleeves?

  914. And to serve one

  915. another, right?

  916. This word servants,

  917. as I mentioned

  918. earlier, gets

  919. translated in this

  920. bond servant slave

  921. image and doulas.

  922. But there's also

  923. another word that

  924. gets used as we think

  925. about serving in

  926. the New Testament.

  927. And it's this Greek

  928. root word, uh, DEOs.

  929. And what's cool is

  930. Greek order, don't

  931. roll your eyes.

  932. DEOs.

  933. Was that close?

  934. That's pretty close.

  935. Yes.

  936. Listen, if you ever

  937. become a preacher,

  938. don't let people

  939. from the Middle

  940. East stay, like sit

  941. in your services.

  942. It's very

  943. awkward, right?

  944. Very awkward.

  945. Every time I drop a

  946. Greek word, everybody

  947. in Greek horse

  948. family's like, dad,

  949. did he do it right?

  950. And I'm like, did

  951. I do it right?

  952. Right.

  953. Like I just

  954. don't know.

  955. So Indiana Greek is

  956. a tough deal, right?

  957. But DEOs is an

  958. interesting word

  959. and it's a different

  960. word that gets used.

  961. Let's go back to

  962. that Galatians

  963. verse real quick.

  964. This whole like,

  965. love your neighbor

  966. as yourself, right?

  967. To serve one another,

  968. humbly in love.

  969. This word serve here

  970. is not the duos kind

  971. of slave bond servant

  972. image to one another.

  973. We're not bond

  974. servants and slaves

  975. to one another.

  976. It's actually this

  977. word diakonos.

  978. And what's cool about

  979. it, it means this.

  980. It means minister

  981. to, to minister,

  982. to check out this

  983. cool picture of what

  984. Jesus calls us to do.

  985. He calls us to

  986. minister to.

  987. One another in this

  988. service to minister

  989. to one another.

  990. Think about that

  991. for a second.

  992. God hasn't just

  993. called you to do

  994. menial tasks for

  995. one another to show

  996. up and do something

  997. random that might

  998. be helpful or not.

  999. Or fill a role in

  1000. youth ministry or

  1001. children's ministry

  1002. or be a greeter.

  1003. Help with the

  1004. coffee bar.

  1005. Come cut down trees

  1006. and help with lawn

  1007. care at the church.

  1008. Like what you're

  1009. really doing

  1010. biblically, you're

  1011. not just serving

  1012. or helping.

  1013. Because we, we

  1014. kind of make that

  1015. a menial concept

  1016. in our culture.

  1017. You're doing

  1018. ministry, you are

  1019. called to minister

  1020. to one another.

  1021. When you go help

  1022. someone who's in

1023. need, when you show up

  1024. and you do something

  1025. with the children

1026. or the kids or the

1027. teens or adults or a

  1028. small group thing, or

  1029. you're helping do some

  1030. stuff with like the

  1031. clothing giveaway and

  1032. you're meeting other

  1033. family, you're not

  1034. just serving, I'm just

  1035. serving at my church.

  1036. Let's lose that word.

  1037. You are doing

  1038. this diano thing.

  1039. You are.

  1040. Ministering to others.

  1041. You are a minister.

  1042. And here's one of

  1043. the problems with

  1044. this word we get

  1045. into in the Greek.

  1046. This diano reminds us

  1047. of this word, deacon.

  1048. And it's actually

  1049. where we get the

  1050. word deacon outta

  1051. the Greek, and we'll

  1052. see this official

  1053. office of the church,

  1054. deacons minister.

  1055. Well, what's a deacon?

  1056. Well, some churches

  1057. still use the

  1058. terminology.

1059. Do they use it right?

  1060. I don't know.

  1061. There's some different

  1062. words in the church

  1063. back in the days

  1064. here of Paul and

  1065. the apostles, that

  1066. they use different

  1067. offices of the

  1068. church to carry out

  1069. certain ministries.

  1070. And here's

  1071. the problem.

  1072. We think that

  1073. means, oh, we pay

  1074. someone to do that.

  1075. Gotcha.

1076. So I would like to

1077. be on the board and

  1078. help build a budget

1079. so I can pay someone

  1080. else to do ministry

1081. to one another so I

  1082. don't have to, and I

  1083. can justify it with

  1084. Anos 'cause it's a

  1085. deacon thing, right?

  1086. Here's the problem,

  1087. pastors, you're not a

  1088. CEO nor a celebrity.

  1089. This idea of Corporate

  1090. America church does

1091. not work at all, nor

1092. is it biblical at all.

  1093. And when your church

  1094. becomes such an

  1095. organization that it

  1096. loses the organism

1097. that is supposed to be

  1098. the living, breathing

  1099. body of Christ,

  1100. then we got trouble.

  1101. And man, we live

  1102. in this culture

  1103. where everybody is

  1104. paying somebody to

  1105. do ministry instead

  1106. of being biblically

  1107. obedient to God's

  1108. mandate for his people

  1109. to serve one another.

  1110. Lemme show you

  1111. what I mean.

  1112. One Peter four 10

  1113. says, each of you

  1114. should use whatever

  1115. gift you have

  1116. received to DEOs.

  1117. Others.

  1118. This is not written

  1119. to the deacons.

  1120. This isn't written

  1121. to some fancy role

  1122. in the church.

  1123. This is written

  1124. to everybody

  1125. in the church.

  1126. God has given you

  1127. talents and abilities

  1128. and passions and

  1129. uniqueness, and

  1130. God has called you

  1131. to minister in his

  1132. church serving others.

  1133. We should probably

  1134. drop it and make

  1135. it an M ministering

  1136. to one another.

  1137. You are supposed

  1138. to be doing that.

  1139. What's my job

  1140. as a pastor?

  1141. Well, in America, my

1142. job as a pastor is to

  1143. minister to everyone.

1144. To preach on a Sunday

1145. and for you to watch.

  1146. That's not biblical,

  1147. really at all.

  1148. I mean, maybe some

  1149. of what I'm doing, I

  1150. should be ministering.

  1151. 'cause not that I'm a

  1152. pastor, but that I'm

  1153. a follower of Jesus

  1154. Christ and a disciple

1155. of his, and I'm called

  1156. to minister to others.

1157. I should be doing that

1158. whether I am at White

1159. Rock or whether I am

  1160. at McDonald's, right?

1161. And they may need it

  1162. worse at McDonald's.

  1163. That's why I'm

  1164. gonna go there

  1165. and check it out.

  1166. But we're called

  1167. to minister, right?

  1168. And sometimes we make

  1169. this, we make this

  1170. excuse that because

  1171. I'm not gifted enough

1172. to do this or that

  1173. God doesn't expect

  1174. me to minister.

  1175. Well, that's not true.

  1176. Yeah, every, every

  1177. single person here

  1178. has a gift and

  1179. talent and ability.

1180. The Holy Spirit in the

  1181. life of the believer

  1182. gives us different

  1183. abilities and and

  1184. gifts, and he speaks

  1185. and breathes life into

  1186. us, and we're supposed

  1187. to minister to the

  1188. people around us.

  1189. Followers of Jesus

  1190. Christ, serve.

  1191. Right?

  1192. Who are you serving?

  1193. It's a big question

  1194. about are you

  1195. serving God?

  1196. Are you serving

  1197. yourself?

  1198. But there's also

  1199. a littler question

  1200. here too, right?

  1201. Who are you serving?

  1202. Who are you

  1203. ministering to?

  1204. Because you're

  1205. supposed to,

  1206. I'm supposed to

  1207. look around the

  1208. room real quick.

  1209. Just wanna make

  1210. sure you see

  1211. everybody Good.

  1212. Everybody here.

  1213. Nobody's exempt

  1214. from this.

1215. I just want you to

  1216. know that if you

  1217. see somebody, you're

  1218. like, I don't think

  1219. they're supposed to.

  1220. I,

  1221. let me think about

  1222. that real quick.

  1223. I don't know.

  1224. Maybe a couple

  1225. of you, but No,

  1226. I'm just kidding.

  1227. No, not at all.

  1228. Right?

  1229. We're all supposed,

  1230. what about teenagers?

  1231. Are they supposed

  1232. to minister?

  1233. Well.

  1234. Can we just talk

  1235. about that a minute

  1236. ago, Olivia, right,

  1237. and Timothy like set

  1238. an example for the

  1239. believers in faith and

  1240. speech and conduct.

  1241. Teenagers.

  1242. You're supposed to

  1243. be doing ministry.

  1244. Nah man, we just

  1245. get ministered too.

  1246. Nah, I'm supposed to

  1247. be doing ministry.

  1248. Listen man, I

  1249. already did my time.

  1250. I'm a grandma or a

  1251. grandpa now and I

  1252. helped with the kids.

  1253. I am out.

  1254. Right.

  1255. I feel that I

  1256. have a teenager.

  1257. We haven't changed

  1258. diapers in a long

  1259. time at my house.

  1260. I'm not planning on

  1261. doing that ever again.

  1262. Just kidding.

  1263. I probably will

  1264. have to help.

  1265. Right?

  1266. We're not exempt.

  1267. Anywhere on the

  1268. spectrum are we exempt

  1269. from ministering

  1270. to one another?

  1271. That's the call.

  1272. And the problem is,

1273. is you and I live

  1274. in a culture that

1275. has taught us to be

  1276. self-serving, to do

1277. what we want and to

  1278. just excuse ministry

  1279. as some profession

  1280. and not have any

  1281. responsibility to

  1282. the call to serve

  1283. others around us.

  1284. Who are you serving?

  1285. Who are you

  1286. ministering to?

  1287. 'cause we're supposed

  1288. to be doing that.

1289. We did a cool thing

  1290. launching some youth

  1291. ministry stuff two

  1292. weeks ago, and we

  1293. did a cool thing

  1294. with some small group

  1295. stuff last week.

  1296. And today right after

  1297. church, there's a

  1298. cool opportunity to

  1299. explore what's going

1300. on in the kids' wing

  1301. with preteens and a

  1302. couple of elementary

  1303. windows classes and

  1304. some really little

  1305. Sunday school junior.

  1306. Crazy fun, and even

  1307. nursery stuff, loving

  1308. on little babies

  1309. so that Clinton can

  1310. have some friends.

  1311. Come on people.

  1312. Right?

  1313. Thank you, Renee.

1314. But God has called us

  1315. to serve one another.

1316. In love and it can be

  1317. hard sometimes 'cause

  1318. you don't always feel

  1319. like serving and you

  1320. don't really want to.

  1321. And that's that whole

  1322. love picture, right?

  1323. We're we have to

  1324. stay connected to

  1325. Jesus, the source

  1326. of love that we

  1327. might serve others.

  1328. And love is a

  1329. choice, not just

  1330. some crazy feeling.

  1331. I don't feel like

  1332. loving my spouse.

  1333. That'll happen.

  1334. Sure.

  1335. But that doesn't

  1336. mean I choose and

  1337. I'll love my spouse.

  1338. Man, Jesus helped

  1339. Jamie not choose to

  1340. not love me, right?

  1341. 'cause I give her a

  1342. couple opportunities

  1343. a day, right?

  1344. We choose love and

  1345. we choose to serve.

  1346. The church of Jesus

  1347. Christ is called to

  1348. gather on a regular

  1349. basis, to worship him,

  1350. to share together,

  1351. to encourage one

  1352. another, to exalt

  1353. his name, to commune

  1354. with him, to commune

  1355. with one another,

  1356. and to proclaim

  1357. the truth, and to

  1358. speak the scripture

  1359. and the words of

  1360. life to the people.

  1361. And to one another.

  1362. God's called

  1363. us to that.

  1364. He's called us to

  1365. meet regularly in a

  1366. smaller picture of

  1367. what it looks like

1368. to be a source of

  1369. encouragement and

  1370. fellowship and support

  1371. and accountability

  1372. and challenge to

  1373. one another, to

  1374. walk faithfully

  1375. with Jesus Christ.

  1376. That's important,

  1377. and he has absolutely

  1378. called us to be

  1379. men and women

  1380. and teenagers

  1381. who serve Jesus.

  1382. I don't know where

  1383. you stand with him

  1384. in the big picture.

  1385. Maybe you're busy

  1386. serving yourself and

1387. not him, and you don't

  1388. really know or care.

  1389. But I challenge

  1390. you, this is a

  1391. defining question

  1392. for your life.

  1393. 'cause you either

  1394. serve the kingdom

  1395. of darkness or the

  1396. kingdom of light,

  1397. and the world's gonna

  1398. tell you that serving

  1399. yourself is sort

  1400. of this gray area.

  1401. That's okay.

  1402. And scripture warns

  1403. you over and over

  1404. again, serve the Lord

  1405. with all your heart.

  1406. Everything you got.

  1407. But I think maybe

  1408. even more important

  1409. question for us,

  1410. especially if we've

  1411. made the decision

  1412. to know where we

  1413. stand, is who are

  1414. we ministering to?

  1415. And man, I challenge

  1416. you to wrestle

  1417. with that question.

1418. I challenge you to ask

  1419. the Lord, Lord, who

  1420. am I ministering to?

  1421. And maybe you could

  1422. even ask this really

  1423. miserable question.

  1424. Who do you want

  1425. me to minister to?

  1426. Because the people

  1427. that you're sitting

1428. next to, the body of

  1429. Christ, the family

  1430. of God, that we

  1431. are called to love

  1432. and serve, there

  1433. are needs, there

  1434. are struggles,

  1435. there are hurts,

  1436. there are pains.

  1437. And maybe you live

  1438. in this victim world

  1439. where you think, ah,

  1440. finally a message

  1441. about people serving

  1442. me, let's go.

  1443. No, there isn't

  1444. anybody, no matter

  1445. what your situation

  1446. is, who can't

  1447. also look to the

  1448. needs of others.

  1449. And find ways to

  1450. communicate, love and

  1451. hope and service to

  1452. the body of Christ.

  1453. Three chain links

  1454. to connect us.

  1455. Three, very simple,

  1456. profound, and serious,

  1457. and really important

  1458. practices that the

  1459. church of Jesus

  1460. Christ has done for

  1461. thousands of years.

  1462. We didn't invent

  1463. them in America.

  1464. We didn't create

  1465. small groups.

  1466. We didn't create

  1467. service projects,

  1468. and we didn't create

  1469. some Sunday morning

  1470. worship experience.

  1471. This is what the

  1472. church does, and this

  1473. is how we continue

  1474. to stay connected

  1475. and impactful in

  1476. the world around us.

1477. So I hope you take

  1478. heart with that.

  1479. Every time you see

  1480. those crazy little

  1481. things, you're

  1482. reminded, and man,

  1483. I'd encourage you

  1484. talk to the Lord.

  1485. Lord, who can

  1486. I minister to?

  1487. Who should I be

  1488. ministering to?

  1489. Help me see it.

  1490. Father, thank you

  1491. for these challenging

  1492. thoughts over these

  1493. last few weeks as

  1494. we've explored this

  1495. connection we have

  1496. to being your people

  1497. for millennia.

  1498. Thank you for the

  1499. truth of your word.

  1500. Thank you for

  1501. the conviction

  1502. of your word.

  1503. None of us love

  1504. that at all.

  1505. It's hard sometimes,

  1506. and Lord, as you

  1507. examine us, you

  1508. know how selfish

1509. we are as a people.

  1510. You know how

  1511. selfish I can be?

  1512. Geez.

1513. And yet you love us

1514. and you call us to

  1515. walk in obedience to

  1516. serving one another.

  1517. Father, I pray

  1518. that you would

  1519. help us examine our

  1520. hearts, that you

  1521. would speak to us

  1522. powerfully through

  1523. your Holy Spirit,

  1524. convict us of

  1525. areas that were

  1526. consumed with self

  1527. illuminate, shine

  1528. some light in areas.

  1529. Where maybe we can

  1530. be effective in doing

  1531. some ministry to the

  1532. church around us.

  1533. We wanna resemble a

  1534. whole lot better what

1535. it looks like to be

  1536. your people than what

  1537. this selfish culture

  1538. around us looks like.

  1539. So help us love

  1540. one another well

  1541. in serving and

  1542. administering to

  1543. each other and let

  1544. those ripple effects.

  1545. Spread way outside

  1546. the church walls to

  1547. minister to people in

  1548. our community, in our

  1549. nation, in our world.

  1550. We love you Lord,

  1551. and we thank you.

  1552. Please guide and

  1553. direct us as we

1554. just try to take a

  1555. step of obedience

  1556. in this area.

  1557. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1558. Amen.
