  1. Thanks, worship team.

  2. I'm on the, uh, tail

  3. end of a cold, so

  4. I'm working on that.

  5. Sexy Barry Manalow

  6. voice, which

  7. is gonna be,

  8. you know what I'm

  9. working on my sexy

  10. Barry Bonds voice

  11. for when I hit

  12. a few home runs.

  13. That's what I'm doing.

  14. I was just trying to

  15. prove I wasn't part of

  16. that generation rusty.

  17. But now, there we go.

  18. I'm very fine if

  19. we just move on.

  20. All right,

  21. there we go.

  22. All right.

  23. All right.

  24. Oh, good stuff.

  25. I love that song.

  26. Uh, I'll make room

  27. for you, Lord, to do

  28. whatever you want to.

  29. What a cool picture

  30. of what it means to

  31. be a follower of Jesus

  32. Christ, that we'll

  33. surrender our will

  34. and our way to him.

  35. You know, there's

  36. a reason we call

  37. Jesus Lord and not

  38. like random guru of

  39. information, right?

  40. Like he is Lord.

  41. And we submit and

  42. we surrender to

  43. his way over ours.

  44. And that's a big

  45. piece of what it means

  46. to be a follower of

  47. Jesus is every day.

  48. Denying ourself,

  49. picking up our

  50. cross, following

  51. him, saying no to us,

  52. saying yes to Jesus.

  53. I'm excited about

  54. where we're headed

  55. in these next few

  56. weeks together as

  57. a church, because I

  58. think this is kind

  59. of the anthem, right?

  60. That we'll make room

  61. for whatever Jesus

  62. wants to do in us

  63. holding to this truth.

  64. The Lord your

  65. way is better.

  66. I wonder if we

  67. believe that, that

  68. your way is better.

  69. 'cause there's an

  70. underlying kind

  71. of inference here

  72. in this statement.

  73. Your way, Lord is

  74. better than what you

  75. know than my way.

  76. Right?

  77. Your way is better

  78. than my way.

  79. And I wonder sometimes

  80. as followers of

  81. Jesus, if we really

  82. totally, genuinely

  83. believe that.

  84. I think if you

  85. ask any Christian,

  86. they would say, I'm

  87. sorry, any legit

  88. follower of Jesus.

  89. 'cause if I say

  90. Christian, that

  91. might just mean

  92. culturally, right?

  93. But I mean, if you

  94. ask anybody who's

  95. a true follower

  96. of Jesus Christ.

  97. I don't think they'd

  98. argue with you

  99. theologically or on

  100. a big picture sense

  101. that God's way is

  102. better than our way,

  103. but that's not really

  104. where the rub is.

  105. It's in the every

  106. day, every moment

  107. individual situations

  108. where we choose our

  109. way over his way,

  110. where we say, ah,

  111. Lord, I think my

  112. way might be the

  113. best approach here.

  114. Or we just completely

  115. ignore what his

  116. way might be.

  117. Your way is better

  118. than my way.

  119. I love this

  120. phrase your way.

  121. I love the phrase way

  122. such a cool picture

  123. of what it means to be

  124. a follower of Jesus.

  125. Paul, early on in

  126. the Book of Acts

  127. in history, we know

  128. he takes letters to

  129. the synagogues in

  130. Damascus to try to

  131. arrest these men and

  132. women who are quote

  133. followers of the way,

  134. those who belong to.

  135. The way belonging

  136. to the way this was.

  137. This was pre-Christian

  138. terminology, right?

  139. I think it called

  140. These people who

  141. belong to the way get

  142. called Christians in a

  143. place called Antioch.

  144. A little later on.

  145. But right now nobody

  146. knows what to call

  147. these people who

  148. are disciples and

  149. followers of Jesus.

  150. So they just call

  151. 'em people who are

  152. following the way

  153. and what a beautiful

  154. picture of what it

  155. means to follow Jesus.

  156. 'cause we've turned

  157. salvation and this

  158. Christian experience

  159. into raising our

  160. hand in church and

  161. coming up to an altar

  162. and praying once,

  163. and then just doing

  164. whatever the heck we

  165. want to do our way.

  166. But being a follower

  167. of Jesus Christ is

  168. about choosing his

  169. way, the way to live,

  170. the way to walk,

  171. the way to love.

  172. It's a relationship

  173. that begins with

  174. repentance and

  175. surrender, but

  176. it's a journey.

  177. But.

  178. It's a map,

  179. it's a road.

  180. It's a way, and I

  181. love this picture

  182. that the early church

  183. were people who

  184. belonged to the way.

  185. And maybe a good

  186. question for us

  187. in 2024 is maybe

  188. just simply, do you

  189. belong to the way,

  190. do you belong to

  191. the way of Jesus?

  192. Or maybe what way do

  193. you belong to, right.

  194. Why?

  195. I'm super excited

  196. because over these

  197. next nine weeks

  198. as a church, we're

  199. gonna use this

  200. practicing the way,

  201. um, book by John

  202. Mark Comer as kind

  203. of a springboard into

  204. some conversations

  205. and into some diving

  206. and exploration and

  207. experience on what

  208. it might look like to

  209. be people who belong

  210. to the way, people

  211. who walk in the way.

  212. People who don't

  213. just say they're

  214. part of the way,

  215. but they live.

  216. That they're

  217. part of the way.

  218. This book has a

  219. lot of interesting

  220. stuff in it.

  221. I'd encourage you

  222. to grab a copy of

  223. it and read it.

  224. It, it's pretty

  225. challenging and

  226. inspiring and

  227. encouraging,

  228. and there's a

  229. lot in there.

  230. Uh, and we'll use it

  231. as a reference over

  232. these nine weeks in a

  233. couple different ways.

  234. But at its core, this

  235. book is really about

  236. something called

  237. spiritual formation.

  238. Spiritual Formation,

  239. which is a fancy

  240. theological term,

  241. but formation really

  242. is about being

  243. formed, right?

  244. And spiritual

  245. formation is about our

  246. spiritual life being

  247. formed and molded and

  248. shaped intentionally

  249. in some ways.

  250. And I think it's

  251. interesting to think

  252. about because, um,

  253. our body and our

  254. being and who we

  255. are as a person is a

  256. very complex thing.

  257. It.

  258. And sometimes we do

  259. this thing where we

  260. kind of, uh, segment

  261. and compartmentalize

  262. emotional and physical

  263. and spiritual and

  264. mental components.

  265. And you could, I

  266. mean, you could lose

  267. years spending time

  268. with psychologists

  269. trying to explain the

  270. complexity of humanity

  271. and what it means,

  272. just being right.

  273. What is a person,

  274. what constitutes it?

  275. And, and what's crazy

  276. is we have one body,

  277. but we have all these

  278. complex components

  279. of this body.

  280. And, and I would just

  281. challenge you with

  282. this thought, as you

  283. think about spiritual

  284. formation, we are an

  285. integrated creation

  286. of God where we have

  287. mind, body, spirit.

  288. So like there's all

  289. of this stuff that

  290. we can't separate

  291. and pull it out in a

  292. vacuum and be like,

  293. now I'm gonna do

  294. spiritual formation,

  295. now I'm gonna do

  296. physical stuff.

  297. Now I'm gonna do

  298. emotional stuff.

  299. Now I'm gonna

  300. do mental stuff.

  301. Everything is kind

  302. of integrated.

  303. And so when

  304. we think about

  305. spiritual formation.

  306. Spiritual formation

  307. affects everything

  308. about who we are.

  309. Everything about how

  310. we live, everything

  311. about what we do.

  312. It's one of the

  313. reasons if we have

  314. bad physical habits,

  315. we tend to have bad

  316. spiritual habits.

  317. There's bleed over.

  318. We have disciplined

  319. physical habits.

  320. We see some

  321. more disciplined

  322. spiritual habits.

  323. There is a correlation

  324. because we're not

  325. just four or five

  326. or 10 or one or

  327. three components

  328. of a, of a being.

  329. We're a complex person

  330. that God's created.

  331. But spiritual

  332. formation.

  333. This idea of how

  334. there's spiritual

  335. dimension to us that's

  336. getting formed is

  337. a important maybe

  338. segment to just stop

  339. and look at because

  340. I think we get the

  341. idea that there's

  342. sort of this physical

  343. life and maybe all

  344. of these other pieces

  345. blend together,

  346. but spiritually we

  347. ought to be learning

  348. and growing or

  349. experiencing and,

  350. and here's what's

  351. crazy, our culture.

  352. Is desperate to

  353. learn more about

  354. spiritual stuff.

  355. We live in a super

  356. spiritual culture,

  357. not necessarily

  358. Christian, but people

  359. are desperate for

  360. something spiritual.

  361. That makes sense

  362. because God designed

  363. us as this person to

  364. experience something

  365. spiritual and it's

  366. ultimately found

  367. in our relationship

  368. with Jesus Christ

  369. and walking in

  370. that with him.

  371. But there's a

  372. longing that's there.

  373. And so spiritual

  374. formation is,

  375. is a big thing.

  376. That's a part

  377. of who we are.

  378. And I would share

  379. this thought with you.

  380. You are already,

  381. whether you're doing

  382. it intentionally

  383. or not experiencing

  384. spiritual formation

  385. in your life, you

  386. are already being

  387. spiritually formed

  388. by the things

  389. around you, the

  390. culture around you.

  391. I love this quote

  392. from his book.

  393. He says this, the

  394. question isn't,

  395. am I a disciple?

  396. It's who or what

  397. am I a disciple of?

  398. It's not whether

  399. I'm a disciple,

  400. it's what or who

  401. am I a disciple of?

  402. See, every single day

  403. our culture is sending

  404. us messages, the

  405. people we spend time

  406. with, the things that

  407. we read and watch, the

  408. stories we believe,

  409. the stories we invest

  410. in, the things that

  411. we dream and hope and

  412. pull and plot as goal

  413. and design and future,

  414. like everything

  415. is shaping us.

  416. It's almost like

  417. we're in this

  418. river just flowing.

  419. Right?

  420. And unless

  421. you're paddling,

  422. counterculture,

  423. the culture just

  424. keeps sweeping us

  425. a direction to form

  426. who we are, even in

  427. a spiritual sense.

  428. And a lot of us are

  429. very unintentional

  430. about our spiritual

  431. formation.

  432. A lot of us think we

  433. show up at a church,

  434. we sing some songs,

  435. and now I've been

  436. formed spiritually

  437. into this deep.

  438. Follower of Jesus.

  439. Well, maybe that's

  440. one practice, right?

  441. One of our S practices

  442. that Sunday morning

  443. worship gathering

  444. where we come

  445. together, that's

  446. important, right?

  447. But there's a lot

  448. of practices that

  449. are evident and

  450. that help mold and

  451. shape us towards

  452. spiritual formation.

  453. This idea of being

  454. spiritually formed,

  455. asking the question,

  456. who or what are you

  457. being formed by is

  458. probably a really

  459. important personal

  460. inventory to take.

  461. What is it

  462. that's forming

  463. and shaping me?

  464. What is it that's

  465. forming and shaping

  466. me spiritually into

  467. what I believe,

  468. into how I live?

  469. And I think this

  470. author would ask it

  471. maybe like this, who

  472. are you currently

  473. apprenticing under?

  474. Dax did a great

  475. job last week of

  476. talking about this

  477. idea of disciple

  478. and apprentice, and

  479. did a really good

  480. job distinguishing

  481. that disciples.

  482. Are taught, right?

  483. They're told, and the

  484. onus of discipleship

  485. is on the discipler.

  486. I need more

  487. information.

  488. Your discipleship

  489. program didn't

  490. disciple me enough.

  491. I need to be

  492. discipled more.

  493. And while information

  494. and knowledge and

  495. all those things

  496. are important and

  497. they're good, the

  498. practicality and the

  499. application of that

  500. knowledge gets lost.

  501. Sometimes when we

  502. think of discipleship,

  503. and I love his version

  504. here of Apprentice,

  505. this idea that

  506. apprentices, it's not

  507. that they don't get

  508. information and learn

  509. all those things, but

  510. they practice, right?

  511. There are practices

  512. that apprentices

  513. are involved in

  514. that help them

  515. learn and grow and

  516. experience walking in

  517. a certain way, right?

  518. We're going to be

  519. spending the next

  520. nine weeks looking

  521. at some practices

  522. together as a church

  523. practices that

  524. are gonna help us.

  525. In our space of

  526. abiding and being with

  527. Jesus practices, I

  528. hope that challenge

  529. us to become more like

  530. Jesus and practices

  531. of actually doing

  532. some of the things

  533. that Jesus did.

  534. And in so doing, what

  535. we're really doing

  536. is we're apprenticing

  537. under Jesus.

  538. Were doing

  539. discipleship, but

  540. not information.

  541. Discipleship,

  542. not knowledge,

  543. discipleship.

  544. 'cause sometimes we

  545. sit and we learn and

  546. we learn and we learn,

  547. but we never do.

  548. And that's, man,

  549. that's not what

  550. Jesus did with

  551. his own disciples.

  552. He sent them

  553. out to do stuff.

  554. He expected them

  555. to do stuff.

  556. You feed them, you

  557. go, you teach, you

  558. heal, you pray.

  559. You lead this.

  560. Jesus has purpose

  561. for his disciples

  562. not to get to heaven.

  563. Super smart, right?

  564. I mean, not, we

  565. shouldn't get to

  566. heaven, super dumb,

  567. don't get me wrong.

  568. But we're called

  569. to be people who

  570. are impactful in

  571. the world around us

  572. 'cause of how we live.

  573. So over the next

  574. nine weeks, we're

  575. gonna be exploring

  576. some of these

  577. practices together.

  578. In our small group

  579. time that you have a

  580. chance to sign up to

  581. be a part of, there's

  582. gonna be space.

  583. Remember how we

  584. talked about that

  585. with our other s

  586. small group, that

  587. sometimes in a big

  588. group setting you get

  589. to hear information,

  590. but in a small group

  591. setting, you get to

  592. ask questions that

  593. maybe you feel feeler,

  594. stupid clarifying

  595. question that you

  596. think maybe everybody

  597. else gets but you.

  598. And then you find out

  599. that no, everybody

  600. else had the same

  601. question, but nobody

  602. had a chance to ask,

  603. or everybody felt

  604. too foolish to ask.

  605. Small groups are an

  606. important place to

  607. unpack some of these.

  608. So each week as we

  609. go through these

  610. practices, your

  611. small group is gonna

  612. have the opportunity

  613. to talk and to dig

  614. and to explore and

  615. to challenge each

  616. other, to try some

  617. of these practices,

  618. to walk in some of

  619. these practices to

  620. understand better some

  621. of these practices.

  622. And you're gonna be

  623. in an environment

  624. that encourages you

  625. to try to walk in

  626. the way more than

  627. just a Sunday morning

  628. to walk in the way.

  629. Sorry, burning man.

  630. A little white here

  631. for just a moment.

  632. Mm.

  633. Today we're gonna

  634. jump in on this first

  635. practice, and we're

  636. gonna follow the

  637. outline in this book,

  638. which is kind of cool.

  639. And here's what's

  640. really cool.

  641. If you read this book,

  642. uh, it won't, it won't

  643. actually, um, just

  644. give you a chapter by

  645. chapter breakdown of

  646. all these practices.

  647. It's just gonna

  648. challenge you to think

  649. about what it means

  650. to become like Jesus,

  651. to be with him, do

  652. what he did, explore

  653. this whole process.

  654. And then he is

  655. gonna throw in

  656. some practices.

  657. Dax said some good

  658. things last Sunday

  659. about sometimes we

  660. put up some different

  661. bullet points, and

  662. then those become

  663. the target, right?

  664. Those become

  665. the destination.

  666. And walking with Jesus

  667. isn't about being a

  668. person who gets it

  669. a hundred percent on

  670. all 10 or nine or four

  671. or three or whatever,

  672. different task lists.

  673. It's instead being

  674. somebody who begins

  675. to look more and

  676. more like Jesus.

  677. That family

  678. resemblance shows

  679. up and living

  680. like Jesus and

  681. impacting like Jesus.

  682. This first

  683. practice we're

  684. gonna talk about.

  685. It is the first one he

  686. lays out in his book.

  687. And I love that he

  688. did this because,

  689. I dunno about you,

  690. but my n my mindset

  691. would normally be

  692. like, all right man,

  693. let's get after it.

  694. Let's take it down.

  695. I'm energized,

  696. I'm ready to go.

  697. Gimme the hard ones.

  698. Let's roll.

  699. This may be one of

  700. the hardest ones

  701. actually, but it's

  702. this practice, it's

  703. the practice of

  704. Sabbath, which is

  705. really an interesting

  706. invitation.

  707. Jesus says, take my

  708. yoke upon you, right?

  709. For my yoke

  710. is easy and my

  711. burden is light.

  712. And this first

  713. practice is a practice

  714. called Sabbath.

  715. Now, in the Hebrew,

  716. which I would

  717. definitely say really

  718. well if my throat,

  719. you know, wasn't sore,

  720. um, actually, what

  721. is this Hebrew word?

  722. Rusty?

  723. Do you know Russell?

  724. You got a shirt on?

  725. What's this

  726. Hebrew word?

  727. Khor.

  728. What's this

  729. Hebrew word?

  730. Come on man.

  731. It was like a chosen,

  732. all they do is say

  733. Shabbat and the

  734. chosen endlessly.

  735. Right.

  736. Okay.

  737. Okay.

  738. I'm just checking.

  739. I'll just checking.

  740. Alright, fair enough.

  741. Yeah.

  742. Okay.

  743. That's fair.

  744. Looks like a, yeah.

  745. Yeah.

  746. I don't know what

  747. kind of music sign

  748. that would be like a

  749. harp at the end maybe.

  750. So this Hebrew word,

  751. Shabbat is a word

  752. that if you watch

  753. the chosen, they

  754. use it all the time.

  755. And it's super

  756. complicated in the

  757. Jewish culture.

  758. Maybe to understand

  759. the depth of

  760. what it means.

  761. It's very, uh,

  762. it's a beautiful,

  763. complicated, epically

  764. amazing concept that

  765. has been, uh, covered

  766. with a thousand

  767. ritual and laws and

  768. the Jewish culture.

  769. But it's not that

  770. complicated if

  771. you just pause and

  772. you take a second

  773. to think Shabbat.

  774. In the Hebrew, one

  775. of the beautiful

  776. pictures that

  777. emerges in the Hebrew

  778. language is this

  779. word intermission.

  780. And I love the concept

  781. of intermission.

  782. So don't

  783. overcomplicate the

  784. Sabbath for us.

  785. There's confusion.

  786. Is it a Saturday?

  787. Is it a Sunday?

  788. You know, we

  789. have a weekend.

  790. Is it, is it

  791. worship at church?

  792. That Sabbath?

  793. I mean, what?

  794. What is this thing?

  795. Simplify the whole

  796. thing down to

  797. this intermission.

  798. It's intermission now.

  799. We first hear about

  800. the Sabbath, not back

  801. in the Hebrew law as

  802. it's been given, but

  803. at the very beginning

  804. of all creation,

  805. on the seventh

  806. day, God completed

  807. the work that he

  808. had been doing.

  809. He rested on

  810. the seventh day.

  811. This idea of rest

  812. on the seventh day

  813. is this picture

  814. of intermission

  815. from work, from

  816. all the work he

  817. had undertaken.

  818. God blessed.

  819. The seventh day, made

  820. it holy because on

  821. it, he rested from

  822. all of his creation.

  823. Now, this came long

  824. before God gave all

  825. the Jewish laws and.

  826. Stuff to Moses and,

  827. and long before

  828. the Jews created a

  829. thousand legalistic

  830. structures around

  831. their laws to try

  832. to fence and protect

  833. the sacredness of

  834. the law right here at

  835. the very beginning,

  836. God institutes this

  837. picture of Sabbath.

  838. As the students in

  839. my class asked me

  840. this week, like,

  841. why was there night?

  842. Like, did God

  843. get tired and

  844. need to sleep?

  845. And why was

  846. there a rest day?

  847. Did God get tired?

  848. And as you explore

  849. that, I mean, if

  850. you just think,

  851. can God get tired?

  852. He neither sleeps

  853. nor slumbers.

  854. I mean, no.

  855. So why did he do that?

  856. Well, maybe he

  857. was an accident.

  858. Maybe God tripped

  859. and fell down

  860. and no, God does

  861. things on purpose.

  862. That's all he does.

  863. He gave us night

  864. and day for the

  865. rhythms of day,

  866. and he gave us the

  867. Sabbath as part of the

  868. rhythm of the week.

  869. One seventh of our

  870. week, God said Rest.

  871. He did it with the

  872. year of Jubilee

  873. for the land to

  874. have time to rest.

  875. Right?

  876. God's into

  877. this concept

  878. of this rhythm.

  879. Work hard, rest.

  880. It's important.

  881. Moving on to the 10

  882. Commandments here,

  883. which most of us have

  884. memorized, so I could

  885. just call on somebody

  886. to come up here and

  887. say 'em real quick.

  888. Uh, let's see.

  889. Dawn, do you want

  890. to do the, oh, you

  891. don't, oh, you're

  892. busy taking notes.

  893. That's totally good.

  894. Um,

  895. did you want to, I

  896. saw that hand twice.

  897. We all remember the

  898. 10 Commandments,

  899. but we just don't

  900. wanna say it in

  901. front of our friends.

  902. Uh, the 10

  903. Commandments, right?

  904. I mean, these

  905. are big time

  906. principles, right?

  907. Like no other

  908. gods before me.

  909. He shall worship no

  910. other gods before me.

  911. There's no idols, no

  912. idolatry, that there

  913. we're not to misuse

  914. God's name in any

  915. way, shape or form.

  916. Things like honor

  917. your father and

  918. your mother.

  919. Don't murder.

  920. Don't commit adultery.

  921. Don't steal,

  922. don't lie.

  923. Don't envy.

  924. These are core

  925. principles that

  926. God has given his

  927. people to follow.

  928. Now, here's one thing

  929. that we kinda mess up

  930. Sometimes in modern

  931. Christianity, we say,

  932. Jesus, you know, he

  933. came and we're not

  934. under the law anymore.

  935. We're under grace.

  936. And so we don't have

  937. to follow the law.

  938. Like Dax is mad, he

  939. wants to leave 'cause

  940. he wanna follow

  941. the law, right?

  942. The law of sitting

  943. in your church

  944. and being good.

  945. Yeah.

  946. Um, but here's

  947. the thing.

  948. Jesus said, I came to

  949. fulfill the law not

  950. to abolish the law.

  951. And while the

  952. Israelites had

  953. created thousands of

  954. laws and legalistic

  955. structures around

  956. the heart of God's

  957. law, Jesus didn't

  958. come to destroy the

  959. heart of God's law.

  960. He did challenge

  961. some of the way they

  962. were legalistically

  963. trying to live out

  964. the law because they'd

  965. gotten away from the

  966. heart of the law.

  967. But these 10

  968. principles here,

  969. these are pretty key

  970. things that are still

  971. heart of the law.

  972. Which of these did

  973. Jesus come to abolish?

  974. No other gods

  975. before me.

  976. Jesus came.

  977. So now idolatry

  978. is cool.

  979. We're free to

  980. be idolatrous.

  981. It's kind of anti

  982. everything in the

  983. New Testament.

  984. Maybe Jesus came

  985. so that now we can

  986. misuse the name of the

  987. Lord our God, right?

  988. No longer have

  989. to honor father

  990. and mother.

  991. 'cause Jesus came.

  992. We're free from that.

  993. Now, Jesus wants us

  994. to murder and commit

  995. adultery and steal

  996. and lie and envy

  997. as good followers

  998. of Jesus, right?

  999. None of us would

1000. say any of that as

  1001. followers of Jesus

  1002. Christ trying to

1003. walk in the way we

  1004. would say, Jesus

  1005. upholds every one

  1006. of these principles

  1007. and he expects us

  1008. to live like this.

  1009. Right?

  1010. And I would

  1011. agree with you.

  1012. That's why I wanna

  1013. take a look at

  1014. that list again and

  1015. just show you one

  1016. thing right there

  1017. in the middle.

  1018. Verse eight.

  1019. Remember the Sabbath

1020. day and keep it holy.

  1021. Six days you should

  1022. do your labor

  1023. and your work.

  1024. But on the seventh,

  1025. you'll rest.

1026. Just like God did and

  1027. what he instituted

  1028. long before he gave

  1029. Moses all the laws

  1030. on the mountain, he

  1031. set it in motion.

  1032. The first week

  1033. of creation.

1034. So the truth is this

  1035. guys, these are really

  1036. important principles,

  1037. but right in the

1038. middle of it is this

1039. one that most of us

  1040. somehow, for some

  1041. reason, feel like it's

  1042. no longer something

  1043. God expects of us.

1044. He put it in a list

  1045. with all these other

  1046. things that are

  1047. ridiculously clear

  1048. that he expects

  1049. his people to do.

  1050. And yet, somehow

1051. for us, we feel like

  1052. the Sabbath is not

  1053. something we're,

  1054. I mean, it doesn't

  1055. really apply anymore.

  1056. You can't do that.

  1057. Right?

  1058. Which one of those

  1059. doesn't apply anymore?

  1060. I mean, if you're

  1061. gonna start

  1062. doing that, then

  1063. commit adultery.

  1064. 'cause it doesn't

  1065. matter and

  1066. murder somebody.

  1067. 'cause it

  1068. doesn't matter.

  1069. It's all part of

  1070. the same list and

  1071. it's all optional.

  1072. Right?

  1073. The truth is it's

  1074. not optional.

  1075. These weren't God's

  1076. suggestions to people.

  1077. These were his

  1078. commandments with the

  1079. root word command.

  1080. God's people are

  1081. commanded to remember

  1082. the Sabbath day and

  1083. to keep it holy.

  1084. And what does

  1085. that mean?

  1086. Well, remember the

  1087. intermission day, the

1088. day one of seven that

1089. is set aside for rest

  1090. and keep it holy.

  1091. This gets confusing

  1092. sometimes that we're

  1093. like, keep it sacred.

  1094. Like, you know,

  1095. only read the

  1096. Bible on that day.

  1097. Only go to church

  1098. on that day.

1099. Only sing on that day.

  1100. What?

  1101. What are we

  1102. talking about?

  1103. What?

  1104. What's the

  1105. clarity here?

  1106. Well, what does

  1107. the word holy mean?

  1108. It means set apart

  1109. in its simplest form.

  1110. It's not complicated.

  1111. It means set apart.

  1112. There should be

1113. one day of the week

  1114. that's special.

  1115. That's different

  1116. than every other day

1117. of the week, a day.

  1118. That's set aside

  1119. for some really

  1120. important things.

  1121. And don't make the

  1122. mistake that the

  1123. early Israelites did.

1124. The Sabbath is for us.

  1125. It's for us.

  1126. It's God's gift to us.

  1127. Everybody makes

  1128. it some legalistic

  1129. structure that we

1130. have to go and do

  1131. our due diligence

1132. and do our duty to

  1133. God on the Sabbath.

1134. The Sabbath is a gift.

  1135. What does Jesus

  1136. say in Mark 2 27?

  1137. He says, the Sabbath

1138. was made for man, not

  1139. man for the Sabbath.

  1140. The new living

  1141. translation says

  1142. it even clearer.

  1143. The Sabbath was

  1144. made to meet the

  1145. needs of people and

  1146. not people to meet

  1147. the requirements

  1148. of the Sabbath.

  1149. Jesus healed

  1150. on the Sabbath.

  1151. Jesus did good

  1152. on the Sabbath.

  1153. Jesus spent time

  1154. and walked and went

  1155. places with people

  1156. on the Sabbath.

  1157. The Israelites made

  1158. tons of rules about

  1159. only taking a certain

  1160. number of steps and

  1161. only doing a certain

  1162. number of things,

  1163. and they were trying

  1164. hard to protect the

  1165. Sabbath as though the

  1166. Sabbath was sacred.

  1167. Your sacred, you and

  1168. I, eternal, and God's

  1169. given us this space,

  1170. this really special

  1171. set apart space called

  1172. the Sabbath that

  1173. we are supposed to

  1174. observe in our life.

  1175. God has given us.

  1176. I'm gonna sabbath my

  1177. voice for a second.

1178. God has given us the

  1179. Sabbath and he's given

1180. it to us to rest.

  1181. To rest from

  1182. our labor.

  1183. We stink at this

  1184. as a society.

  1185. We stink at it.

  1186. We don't rest well,

1187. or we go straight to

  1188. hardcore laziness.

  1189. Self-indulgence,

  1190. right?

  1191. But God has called

1192. us to have this space

1193. in our week where we

  1194. rest, where we shut

  1195. off the work and

  1196. the pressure and the

  1197. weight, and we rest.

  1198. I'm gonna give you

  1199. a bunch of R words.

  1200. So if you're writing

  1201. down good luck to

  1202. rest and to recover,

  1203. to get recovery from

  1204. the weight and the

  1205. pressure and the

  1206. grind of working and

  1207. laboring and toiling

  1208. in a fallen world

  1209. that's messed up by

  1210. sin, that's given us

  1211. a chance for recovery.

  1212. And he's given us a

  1213. chance to refresh.

  1214. To refresh from

  1215. the exhaustion and

  1216. fatigue, and to renew.

  1217. God has gotta

  1218. doing new stuff.

1219. And when we stop and

1220. we sit and we listen

1221. and we abide in him,

  1222. and we spend time

  1223. with him and with

  1224. one another, and

  1225. we experience his

  1226. renewal in our life.

  1227. There's energy and

  1228. there's hope, and

  1229. there's vision for

  1230. what lies before us.

  1231. In the next week,

  1232. we get replenished.

  1233. We reconnect with him,

  1234. with others who are

  1235. in eternal beings.

  1236. When all the weight

  1237. and pressure of

  1238. work and time and

  1239. pull everywhere,

  1240. every direction,

  1241. distractions of

  1242. endless social media

  1243. and everything, we

  1244. have a chance to

  1245. just stop and connect

  1246. with what's eternal.

  1247. We get recentered

  1248. right and recharged,

  1249. and God does restoring

  1250. work in our soul

  1251. In that space,

1252. we get to reset our

  1253. focus no matter what

  1254. the week's been like.

1255. We get to catch our

  1256. breath and reset and

  1257. we're reminded of

  1258. what's eternal, and

  1259. it helps us remain

  1260. in him and remain

  1261. strong and stand

  1262. for the week ahead.

  1263. No matter what the

  1264. week behind has

  1265. brought us, it's

  1266. a lot of R words.

  1267. You could probably

  1268. think of some better

  1269. words up there.

  1270. I don't know.

  1271. That's just a little

  1272. picture of why God

  1273. gives us this space.

  1274. Space.

  1275. Space Sabbath

  1276. is not neglect.

  1277. The Israelis got in

  1278. trouble because you

  1279. know, hey, Jesus

  1280. is healing some

  1281. dude on a Sabbath.

  1282. What does the

  1283. Pharisee say?

  1284. Hey, listen man,

  1285. there's six days you

  1286. could come get healed.

  1287. Don't ruin the

  1288. Sabbath, and

  1289. Jesus is like,

  1290. whoa, whoa, whoa.

  1291. The Sabbath is about

  1292. not, not neglecting

  1293. what's most important.

  1294. It's about connecting

  1295. with what's

  1296. most important.

  1297. It's not about

  1298. legalistic rules,

  1299. but it's not

  1300. about neglect.

  1301. It's not about

  1302. laziness.

  1303. It's not about,

  1304. ha, this is my

  1305. Sabbath day.

  1306. So family, Jesus,

  1307. listen, this is

1308. my day to do what

  1309. I want to do.

  1310. And shut out the

  1311. rest of the world.

  1312. That's not really

  1313. a picture, right?

  1314. It's not about

  1315. selfishness,

  1316. self-indulgent

  1317. self gratification.

  1318. I get six days I

  1319. gotta work, man,

1320. but that one day is

1321. my day to just do

  1322. whatever the heck I

  1323. want to do, regardless

  1324. of anything else.

  1325. It's not a blank

  1326. check to do that,

  1327. but Sabbath is really

  1328. about coming back to

  1329. what really matters.

  1330. It's really about

  1331. being with abiding

  1332. in Jesus, being with

  1333. our Lord and Savior,

  1334. our relationship

  1335. with Jesus, our

  1336. relationship with

  1337. those around us in

  1338. family and in our

  1339. church, and even

  1340. around our world that

  1341. are eternal people.

  1342. It's really about

  1343. refocusing on eternity

1344. one one day a week

  1345. in the midst of

  1346. all the distraction

  1347. that goes around us.

  1348. And I also

  1349. wanna challenge

  1350. you with this.

  1351. Sabbath is an

  1352. act of faith.

1353. It's an act of faith.

  1354. Just like tithing

1355. is an act of faith.

  1356. God does not

  1357. need your money.

  1358. He's doing

  1359. great, right?

  1360. He needs nothing

  1361. financially

  1362. from you at all.

  1363. So why does he

  1364. say, my people will

1365. give 10% of all of

  1366. their income to me?

  1367. Why?

  1368. 'cause he knows where

1369. your heart is and what

  1370. you love the most.

  1371. And if you're not

  1372. willing to be obedient

  1373. and step out and

  1374. trust him, that

1375. 90% with God is way

  1376. more than a hundred

  1377. percent with you.

  1378. You're missing it.

  1379. Well, don't miss

  1380. Sabbath here.

  1381. It's the exact same

  1382. picture to say, I

  1383. will set aside this

  1384. time for Sabbath

1385. is an act of faith

  1386. as a statement to

  1387. yourself that God's

  1388. in control, not you.

  1389. I wanna just share

1390. just for a second from

  1391. my own life experience

1392. here, like I have, uh,

  1393. there's a theological

  1394. term for this.

  1395. I have sucked

  1396. at Sabbath.

  1397. Most of my adult

  1398. life I've made a

  1399. confusion of like,

  1400. Sunday is Sabbath

1401. day, the day I come

  1402. to worship the Lord.

  1403. But gotta be

  1404. honest with you

  1405. guys, Sunday's

  1406. one of my busiest,

  1407. most exhausting,

  1408. fatiguing days.

  1409. There is no rest

1410. for me on a Sunday.

  1411. Uh, so I've always

  1412. been like, well,

  1413. maybe it just doesn't

1414. apply to guys like me.

  1415. Let's just keep

  1416. honoring the Lord,

  1417. honoring the Sabbath.

  1418. But it's taken me

1419. some years to come to

  1420. a place to recognize

1421. that the Sabbath is a

1422. gift God gives to us.

  1423. If we will walk

  1424. it out correctly,

  1425. we'll experience

  1426. some amazing things.

  1427. I have a really weird

  1428. schedule and I don't

  1429. wanna bore you with

  1430. it and you probably

  1431. don't even care.

  1432. But, uh, I teach

  1433. three days a

  1434. week at a school.

  1435. Um.

  1436. Last year I had

  1437. like five classes.

  1438. I taught on Tuesday,

  1439. five on Wednesday,

  1440. five on Thursday.

  1441. It's like

  1442. five sermons.

  1443. Five sermons, five

  1444. sermons, right?

1445. Three days in a row.

  1446. And then I preach

  1447. here usually, and

  1448. then there's like

  1449. this Monday window to

1450. try to get a bunch of

  1451. stuff done and jump

  1452. into the week with

  1453. all the staff and

  1454. get the whole plan

  1455. for the week going.

  1456. Then jump into

  1457. Tuesday, Wednesday,

  1458. Thursday, get back at

  1459. Friday, Saturday to

  1460. gear up for Sunday.

  1461. And then we just

  1462. keep rolling.

  1463. If you thought

  1464. about your own

  1465. schedule right now,

  1466. you're probably

  1467. exhausted too, right?

  1468. Hearing my schedule,

  1469. you're like, oh,

  1470. I hate schedules.

1471. I hate how fast paced

  1472. we're just careening

  1473. in this life, right?

1474. So Jamie and I were

  1475. like, you know what?

1476. We have got to three

  1477. years ago we said,

1478. we have got to find

  1479. Sabbath, or we're

  1480. just probably not

  1481. gonna make it like

1482. as a couple, we just

  1483. can't keep doing this.

  1484. This is crazy.

  1485. And we don't know

1486. what to say no to in

  1487. some of these things.

  1488. And we've prayed

  1489. that endlessly.

  1490. We talked about that.

  1491. Our couple's retreat

  1492. last year, like

1493. where do we say no?

  1494. So instead what

  1495. we said was, maybe

  1496. God wants us to

  1497. take a Sabbath and

  1498. make this a focus.

  1499. So here's what I did.

  1500. We took Friday

1501. and I'm not in the

  1502. office on Friday.

  1503. I'm not really

  1504. available on a Friday.

  1505. Uh, sometimes people

  1506. have issues come up

  1507. and other guys on

  1508. the staff or gals

  1509. jump in and help.

  1510. But I've set aside

1511. this Friday as a day

1512. for me to be with the

1513. Lord, to be with my

  1514. family, to breathe in

  1515. and out his presence

1516. and just walk in peace

  1517. that day with him.

  1518. And it doesn't

  1519. always end perfectly.

  1520. I'm not gonna say

1521. that, but what I have

  1522. found is something

  1523. crazy for me.

  1524. I was terrified to

  1525. do that because, I

  1526. dunno if you know

  1527. how my brain works,

  1528. probably nobody does.

  1529. I'm a pretty

  1530. linear guy, right?

1531. So like, I love it

1532. when God gives us a,

  1533. a roadmap of where

  1534. we're gonna go on

  1535. some Sunday mornings.

  1536. But I stress about

  1537. this role here to

  1538. stand up in front

1539. of you and say, Hey,

  1540. thus sayeth the Lord.

  1541. That's not an

  1542. easy thing to do.

  1543. Um, and I feel a ton

  1544. of weight with that

  1545. responsibility to

  1546. be faithful to him

  1547. and faithful to you.

1548. And so Monday it'd be

1549. great if I could be

  1550. like, all right, Lord,

  1551. what are we gonna

  1552. preach on Sunday?

  1553. Kinda spend the week

  1554. building it out.

  1555. But I can't do that

  1556. 'cause I'm already

  1557. thinking, well,

  1558. Tuesday I gotta

  1559. preach five times to

  1560. a bunch of teenagers.

1561. Then I gotta do it

  1562. again on Wednesday,

  1563. a different message

  1564. and then Thursday a

  1565. different message.

  1566. So I gotta get

  1567. through those messages

  1568. before I can get

  1569. my brain working

  1570. for the weekend.

1571. So I was like, at

  1572. least I got Thursday

  1573. and Friday to allow

  1574. the Holy Spirit to

  1575. really speak into me.

  1576. Right?

  1577. I'm sorry, Friday

  1578. and Saturday, I keep

  1579. saying that wrong

  1580. Friday and Saturday to

  1581. get ready for Sunday.

  1582. Uh, the problem is,

1583. is if I take that

  1584. Friday now, God,

  1585. I got a 24 hour

  1586. window to make sure

  1587. I'm being faithful

  1588. to Sunday morning.

  1589. That's not gonna work.

  1590. Only loser pastors

  1591. wait till Saturday

  1592. to prepare a message

  1593. that they're gonna

  1594. share, right?

  1595. It's not true

  1596. by the way.

  1597. Um.

1598. So I stepped out in

  1599. faith in this with

1600. my wife and I was

  1601. like, baby, I don't

  1602. think this is gonna

  1603. work, but let's try

  1604. this and just see

  1605. what God maybe does.

  1606. And it was absolutely

1607. about me not being in

  1608. control and trusting

1609. God to meet and make

  1610. up the difference.

  1611. And let me just

  1612. say this, for

  1613. the first year

  1614. of stepping into

  1615. that space, here's

  1616. what God did.

  1617. Almost every Thursday

  1618. between four 30

  1619. and six o'clock, he

  1620. told me everything

  1621. I was supposed

  1622. to say on Sunday.

  1623. It shouldn't really

  1624. make me emotional

  1625. except that God's

  1626. faithful when we're

  1627. obedient to him

  1628. and much damaging

  1629. to my pride.

  1630. People said to

  1631. me in the course

  1632. of that season.

  1633. These are the best

  1634. messages you've

  1635. ever preached.

  1636. So I started

  1637. doing the math.

  1638. You know, maybe,

  1639. maybe me being

  1640. faithful to the Lord

  1641. and obedient in this

  1642. space, God would

  1643. make up even more

  1644. of the difference.

  1645. And he has, and

  1646. he continues to.

  1647. And I gotta

  1648. tell you, like

  1649. everybody's schedule,

  1650. everybody's world is

  1651. challenging, right?

  1652. And you're gonna

  1653. find yourself saying

  1654. what everybody says.

  1655. I don't have time.

  1656. I just don't

  1657. have time.

  1658. Sabbath does not work.

  1659. Setting aside and

  1660. setting apart this

  1661. intermission and the

  1662. chaos and ness of

1663. my life to stop, to

  1664. abide with him, to

  1665. be in his presence,

  1666. to spend time with

  1667. my family, to just

  1668. breathe in and out

1669. and trust him to make

  1670. up the difference.

  1671. I don't have time.

  1672. And you don't.

  1673. I didn't have time.

  1674. I still don't have

  1675. time to be honest.

  1676. And yet when you

  1677. make room and you

  1678. say, I will make

  1679. room, Lord for what

1680. you want to do in

  1681. me, and you begin

  1682. to practice Sabbath,

  1683. I promise you, God

  1684. shows up at your

  1685. level of obedience.

  1686. I promise you you

  1687. can trust him.

  1688. And when we say

  1689. no to obedience,

  1690. what we're really

  1691. saying is not God.

1692. Let me think about it.

  1693. God, I gotta

  1694. process it.

  1695. God, I'm not sure.

  1696. What we're

  1697. saying is, God, I

  1698. don't trust you.

  1699. I don't trust you.

  1700. So I want to

  1701. challenge you.

  1702. This simple practice

  1703. of Sabbath sounded

  1704. really easy at

  1705. the beginning

  1706. of the message,

  1707. but it might

  1708. be a pretty big

  1709. risk for you.

  1710. But you've been

  1711. given an invitation

  1712. to rest in him

  1713. and be obedient.

  1714. Don't murder, don't

  1715. commit adultery, and

  1716. don't neglect Sabbath.

  1717. He's serious.

  1718. And man, I promise

  1719. you, like tithing and

1720. God shows up and meets

  1721. ridiculously every bit

  1722. of faithfulness you

  1723. bring to the table.

  1724. Watch what he does

  1725. with your resource

  1726. of time when you

  1727. give him your most

  1728. precious commodity.

  1729. So join with others

  1730. in your church family,

  1731. stepping out, taking

  1732. a risk, and trying

  1733. to practice the way

  1734. of Jesus together.

  1735. Find the space now.

  1736. Make the space for

  1737. Sabbath and see what

1738. God will do 'cause he

  1739. will meet you there.

  1740. We're gonna pray

  1741. and our worship

  1742. team is gonna come

  1743. up as we close.

  1744. And we're gonna sing

  1745. through that last

  1746. song about surrender

  1747. and making room.

  1748. And I want that, I

  1749. wanna invite you to

  1750. make that your prayer

1751. as we launch into this

  1752. nine weeks together

  1753. as we explore what

  1754. this looks like to

1755. try to walk in some

1756. of the ways of Jesus

  1757. being like him, right?

  1758. Starting to resemble

  1759. him more and more

  1760. doing what he did

  1761. and the best part

  1762. of it all, just

  1763. being with him.

  1764. 'cause here's what

  1765. you're gonna find

  1766. out, that Jesus is

1767. not an idea and he's

  1768. not some doctrine or

  1769. theology or religion.

  1770. He loves you and

  1771. he wants to spend

  1772. time with you.

  1773. And the more time

  1774. you spend with him,

  1775. the more it's gonna

  1776. transform you and

  1777. the more you're gonna

  1778. want to spend time

  1779. with him as well.

  1780. Lord Jesus, thank

  1781. you for your word.

  1782. Thank you for

  1783. your truth.

  1784. Thank you for these

  1785. friends of mine

  1786. who are willing

  1787. to just listen

  1788. for a few minutes.

  1789. Thank for Thank you

  1790. for your faithfulness

  1791. in my life and

  1792. Jamie's life.

  1793. And Jed's

  1794. and Josiah's.

  1795. Thank you for giving

  1796. us the courage to

  1797. try to do something

  1798. that seemed like it

  1799. didn't make any sense.

  1800. And thank you for

  1801. what you've done in

  1802. that space for us.

1803. And Lord, I pray over

  1804. my friends here and

  1805. myself, give us the

  1806. courage, Lord, to

  1807. trust you more than

  1808. we trust, control

  1809. of our own life.

  1810. Lord, help us to

  1811. surrender, to make

  1812. room for what you

1813. want to do in us.

  1814. Lord, this song

  1815. is our prayer.

  1816. We surrender.

  1817. Do what you want

  1818. to do in us.

  1819. Lead us.

1820. In your way that we

  1821. might experience the

  1822. incredible life of an

  1823. apprentice of Jesus

  1824. and all that you

  1825. have in store

  1826. for each of us.

  1827. Thank you Lord.

  1828. Amen.
